Reviews (page 9 of 14)
Magnificent. Layered, complex, clever instrumentation and arrangements. Musically diverse but with Kate’s haunting vocals throughout. Top tracks: cloudbusting, hello earth, hounds of love
Yeah, this is some pretty solid 80s Pop isn’t my jam back in the day but you know what wasn’t so bad
Beautiful, dreamy, meandering. The whole album feels incredibly cohesive and warm.
I didn't know I knew who this was. I definitely have heard Running up that Hill. I like how quirky this one is. She marches to the beat of her own drum, and it's great that she explores her own questions and desires in this album. There is a lot of family, mother, father stuff below the surface here. This album grows on you.
Great album, Running Up that Hill, Hounds of Love and Cloudbusting personal highlights. Kate's voice works really well with the music

Ah, another album by Kate Bush, whose music I have previously described as "pretty weird". I do like Running Up That Hill, though! So we're off to a good start. I also never realised what a banger Cloudbusting is! Yes, I realise I'm literally naming her biggest hits, but you have to admit that these are some of her most accessible songs. The rest of the album is a lot better than "The Dreaming" (the previous one I listened to) - there was just way too much screaming on that one. In between a 3 and a 4, but I'll go for a 4 because it's definitely very original and well-executed.
Есть в этой музыке что то одновременно и родное и совершенно бестолковое.
The eccentric 80s pop icon Kate Bush delivers a smorgasbord of sounds and themes on this remarkable album. It's dense, lush, weird, and fantastic. Where to begin? I suppose I'll start with the first half. This album does have two clearly delineated halves, and its first is a set of five watertight 80s pop songs with the signature Kate Bush flair. The standout is absolutely "Hounds of Love", one of my favorite long songs ever. Kate's impassioned cries of "Here I go!", "Help me!" and "throowwwwww them in the lake!" capture the almost terrifying thrill of falling in love. The driving violins and pounding drums fill the whole song with motion, as if you're being caught up in the whirlwind, or perhaps chased by the hounds. "Cloudbusting" is another highlight, hearkening back to Kate's habit of adapting relatively obscure pieces of classic literature into pop songs (see: "Wuthering Heights"). It's a gorgeous, lyrically touching song about Peter Reich, the son of controversial German psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich. If you had to consult Wikipedia to understand the lyrics of the song, don't worry-- so did everyone. Themes of femininity run through these first few tracks-- "Running Up That Hill" sees Kate yearning to show a man her perspective by striking a deal with God to "get him to swap our places." "Mother Stands for Comfort" is a somewhat puzzling track that seems to almost sarcastically comment on how mothers are expected to be sources of comfort for their children even when their children are horrible. The whole song is kind of creepy and laced with disturbing sound effects, as if Kate is trying to cast doubt on this whole idea. The album takes a thematic and sonic turn at track 6, "And Dream of Sheep." This particular song is gorgeous, featuring just Kate's voice and a clear, ringing piano. The track kicks off a "mini-album" within Hounds of Love entitled "The Ninth Wave" that encompasses the final seven tracks. While my years as a Lupe Fiasco fan have trained me to expect weird conceptual ideas like this, it was still a surprise to hear on a pop album. The Ninth Wave almost deserves to be treated as entirely separate from the first five tracks, which I would call Hounds of Love. It introduces entirely new sonic ideas and follows a relatively straightforward narrative about a woman who nearly dies in a shipwreck and has a series of hallucinations or dreams. Some of these tracks are genuinely creepy, like "Under Ice" and "Waking the Witch", while others are just plain bizarre-- like the obviously SpongeBob-influenced "Jig of Life." The final two tracks are both gorgeous, with "Hello Earth" being particularly stunning, though certainly structurally unorthodox. I feel like I need to treat these two halves separately in my rating. Hounds of Love is an essentially perfect 5-song EP that represents pretty much the pinnacle 80s pop. The Ninth Wave, on the other hand, is like reading an Allen Ginsberg poem-- long, weird, kind of creepy, sometimes stunningly beautiful, but not something you'd listen to often. I feel like I have to dock points from this second half to differentiate it from my favorite concept albums (TPAB, The Black Parade) that are both conceptually brilliant and sonically enjoyable. First half: 9. Second half: 7. Average: 8.
This album is quite something else. I had heard about the influence that this album had on the pop 80s sound, but I had no idea that it would have so much depth. This album is two parts - the first five tracks that are killer 80s synthpop singles, and the second half which comprises of a conceptual 7-track mini-album. Although this album wasn't perfect, I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and was eager to listen once more. Something about Kate Bush's voice is off-putting to me - it's shrill at times, but it feels controlled so I am not bothered by it as much. The opener, "Running Up That Hill" is a classic synthpop track that is super accessible, and it really sets the mood for the rest of the record. I should say right now that the various themes this record tackles (gender equity, unconditional love, dreams, etc.) have a lot of depth that most pop records just don't have anymore. Regardless, that iconic 80s drum fill gave me chills in the opening parts of this album. I love "The Big Sky". It keeps building and building and every addition feels like it adds to the song. Drums are a constant but they are killer all the way through the track. Oh and the ending with the chorus and the guitar solo is so good. It's my favorite of all the singles. Here are my thoughts on "The Ninth Wave", the 7-part conceptual mini-album and my favorite part of this album in particular. You see, this part of the album stands out to me not because of its concept, but because of its contrast to the first part of this record. Somehow, Kate Bush is able to make each of these two sides distinct enough to become two phenomenal EPs, but together they form its own cohesive piece of work. It's really ingenious. These last tracks are all about the experience of a woman drowning after a shipwreck. This can seem shallow at first for a concept album, but the sound is what really makes this part memorable. The sounds of the rescue crew, helicopters, and various voices calling to the woman over these 7 tracks create an incredibly ominous environment, even on dreamlike tracks such as "Under Ice". The stand-out song for me is "Waking the Witch" which begins in a somber tone with voices calling out to the woman while it quickly descends into a battle between the woman and a demon that gives the track metal undertones. It all culminates in the final track, "The Morning Fog", where Kate Bush talks about the importance of showing love towards loved ones because you never know when you'll have to leave them. What really impressed me about by this side was me actually enjoying the interesting musical themes that I usually don't enjoy blended with pop music (metal, irish bagpipes - looking at you Ed Sheeran - choral chants, etc) I was eager to return back to this record for a second listen. It is entertaining from front to back. While I do not consider this album to be perfect, I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. 9/10 for sure for me.
Slightly too young to appreciate first time around ("Dad, why is that woman screeching on TOTP?") but absolutely deserves all the love and praise heaped on it over the years. The opening 3 tracks alone mean it fully deserves its spot on this list.
A fine example of how to make the most of the medium, produce two contrasting suites. The flow of side one is a little lost through the familiarity of the singles, one of which is her finest. The second side is altogether different but still captivating.
Great first side but
Gott stöff
This was pretty good, running up the Hill was highlight.
not as annoying as I expected
This is one of those occasions where I'm feeling like, "Do I reeeeeeally have to explain why Kate Bush is good?" I guess it's high time I got my thinking cap around the thing. It's a completely individual sound, the only bands that sound like her are the ones that have tried and failed to mimic. It gets into your guts and wriggles them around, gives your small intestine a quick shuffle, double checks you haven't got appendicitis (You have and it deals with it with minimum fuss) and it completely empties your bowels. And whilst all this gut shuffling is taking place, you're struggling to go about your day without laughing or crying. Saying all that, this album has a slightly disappointing 'back 9' and doesn't deliver on the promise of everything up to waking the witch. It's hot stuff though.
Great songs - Running Up That Hill, Big Sky, Cloudbusting, Waking the Witch, Watching You Without Me, Jig of Life Very experimental album, probably especially for the time. Hard to categorize it.
Kate Bush is an acquired taste 😂 Also, can we please ban all whisper-singing in songs. It creeps me out like nothing else. I can’t.
I like it so far - not my usual jam, but nice and airy. Giving me "Florence and the Machine" vibes.
liked it
3.5/5. interesting album but very hit or miss. the hits hit hard tho. favs: running up that hill, watching you without me, hounds of love.
Some of this is incredible, some absolute nonsense. Good bless Kate
I quite enjoyed the album. It isn't something I typically listen to but I found it quite enjoyable. I found it quite interesting how some of the songs tie together with one another. Each song also seems to be unique from one another. However some of the lyrics seem to be almost overpowered by the music and hard to distinguish.
The first song seemed a bit repetitive, but the rest of the album had a lot of really interesting melodies and sounds. There is definitely a general genre, but each song had a lot of different ideas in it that made the whole thing seem very unique.
Ugh.
very cool album. gonna listen to more of her jamz fer shore.
cloudbusting is my fave, I love Kate bush but the Witch song was strange
So good.
Classic
Superb.
I was kind of over Kate Bush. Running up the Hill has been overplayed and overcovered over the years, but I found this album to actually be pretty enjoyable.
Great album
awesome pounding percussion - the songs make me want to go out and run up a hill - love Kate Bush
Good album. Good variety, excellent songs, well-produced.
3 of the best pop songs ever on an otherwise ok album.
Woah, how creepy is Waking the Witch...Cool album though
I really enjoyed Hounds Of Love. I prefer side 2 (The Ninth Wave) to side 1.
Kate is great
Super album 👌
Classic. Never heard all way through before.
Every song is a surprise: ballads & beats, strings, jigs, the sample from Cloudbursting that was such a hit for the Utah Saints, and the vocal manipulation at the end of "watching..." that was way ahead of its time. I remember seeing a documentary on this album that said Kate demanded 100% artistic control with zero interference from the record company. I'm glad she got it.
4 stars
Just amazing
fav tracks: running up that hill, cloudbusting, waking the witch
That album cover is hilarious. Don't know anything about Kate or her Bush. Let's listen! Running Up That Hill - Oh, this is SOOOO 80s. I kind of love it so far. Hounds of Love - Another fun one. Reminds me of Heart. Big Sky - This one gets a bit wild. Frenetic energy. Mother Stands for Comfort - The first bust for me. Slow, plodding. Not great. Cloudbursting - Fun instrumentation. And Dream of Sheep/Under Ice - These kind of ran together for me. Fine Waking the Witch - HOLY SHIT. This one is nuts. Techno/Vaporwave style with all kinds of sound bytes. Watching You Without Me - Backward singing and ocean sound effects. Some vaguely bollywood sounding beats/lyrics. Jig of Life - I can't not love a bodhrán. This entire second side of the album is *WILD* Hello Earth - More chanting. This has kind of a Lord of the Rings feeling to it. The Morning Fog - A mellow end. This has been the greatest undiscovered treat of the project so far!
Tres bon pour le style!originale aussi j’aime bien ca fit avec ma journee et c’est motivant 4*
Enjoyed this album very much, not every track but the ones that were great were really great.
80s to the max
Running Up That Hill, Hounds of Love and Cloudbusting are absolute Kate Bush bangers. Top tier album.
Belle ambiance, reconnu quelques classiques.
This production style reminds me of some of Pete Townshend's solo stuff. Especially The Big Sky. I get All the Best Cowboys/White City vibes from it. Maybe it's just a sign of the times. Under Ice - I'm getting Peter Gabriel here. The backup vocals, the dark tones. Waking The Witch could have been produced by New Order. Picturing Tim Curry's devil from Legend in my mind here. Probably just me, but at the start of Hello Earth, I was waiting to hear "This transmission is coming to you..." Don't know if this makes sense, but Kate's voice is unique in an almost generic way. There's something quintessentially 80's about it. It's simultaneously ethereal and grounded. It evokes hairspray and neon and fog on the hilltop. As a whole, this album is very good. I don't know that I'd listen to the point of consuming it into the fabric of my musical being, but I don't often do that anymore anyway. Not with whole albums. I'll probably give it another go to see if there's anything to add to my larger playlist.
she's a legend
So much going on. Sounds incredible.
Fkn love this album, trippy and disorientating in all the right ways. Waking the Witch is straight up psychedelic
I liked it. But relistening all the way through didn't change the songs I like

Big sky gives me some disco vibes, definitely 80s with some new wave. A fun pop-y listen.
This is admittedly the first time I've listened to this whole record and I thought it was great. Very ahead of its 1985 time.
Delightfully surprising, bordering on the Macabre.
A weird project, but I liked it. I felt like I was in a Disney movie while listening. Favorite song is Running up That Hill. The mix of synths, samples, 80s drums, and everything else makes the sound truly unique. I will be listening to it again. 7/8.
Loved this
Cute but maybe too 80s sometimes
Great voice, great rythms, specially the last tracks.
Running Up That Hill is an all time hit, love the album but that's truly a timeless song.
Nice
Strong ambience and very lush instrumentation. Very well made, and has excellent songs. I found it a bit inconsistent though.
It's crazy how much better this is than The Sensual World. I wish this site allowed half stars, but this is extremely close to being a 4/5.
537/1089 - Oh my Science! Is that the songerino from Stranger Things?!?!?! I'm hecking soooooying ooooout!!!!!!! Edit: wAow, this blowed up! thanks for the gold kind stranger! Nah but seriously, this is pretty okay. I don't like the songforms and find them pretty repetitive and rhythmically homogenous but I quite like the elements that build them up: ceative instrumentation, great vocals with complex melodies, cool guitar tone, etc. Definitely can hear how she influenced Björk.
Enjoyment: 6 Replayability: 5 Cohesion: 7 Flow/Pacing: 4 Artistic Merit: 5 Weighted Average: 5.55 Review: The only Kate Bush song I've heard before this album was Running Up That Hill (from Stranger Things of course). The rest of the tracks were decent and I've added up a couple to my playlists, but not much to write home with. I liked the dreamy and experimental pop on the back half, but I didn't connect with it as much as I would've liked to. Liked Song(s): Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God), The Big Sky, Jig Of Life Disliked Song(s): And Dream Of Sheep Recommend? Maybe
Amazing that an album can sound so experimental and meticulously crafted but, at the same time, so "generic 80s"
One good song for sure
Got kinda out there second half of the album but that popular song is pretty good
was nice to start with a familiar song, which unfortunately i do have to give props to stranger things for, followed by a few songs that became background noise but then! cloudbusting came on and there was a revival. from there it only gets better (i typed preemptively). aaaand she lost me again with waking the witch, all the way up until the last song. overall it was a decent album, cant deny it's impact at the time of it's release and she definitely has many daughters to this day!! just perhaps not my cup of tea but still, i like some of the kate songs :)
Incredible after sepultura but only 1 real banger easy 3.3/5
Proggy, also a great palette cleanser after the abomination that was the previous album
6.5/10 really enjoy the first 3 songs but kind of fell off progressively after that unfortunately. Running up that hill is a great song if you look past its recent media usage.
5.5/10 = kind of sucks for me that i can never fully get into her vocals because i love most of the instrumentals and the storytelling gothic elements but the vocals always just gets slightly under my skin maybe it just hasn't clicked for me yet, like i watched a hungarian film last week and the instrumental was so insanely good that i looked it up and it was a sample from hello earth but i just can't enjoy the whole song lol
A great example of the Tom Sawyer 30-Year Bump phenomenon. It’s fine.
Not my favorite a few good ones, stranger things!
Very reminiscent of the Era, but not in a dated way. 80s pop jams/ballads with stellar female vocals
It wasn't bad. It was music that felt somewhat new.
I feel like theatre kids love this. There's some melodramatic through line for this album that I'm not quite understanding, something about werewolves? Spooky stuff. Not as well produced as a Madonna record, Kate is a bit back in the mix which is tough. It's just weird enough to get a 3.
Parecido al otro, “Cloudbusting” muy buena, pero el disco en general se me hizo muy largo. Igual por los dos álbumes de kate bush que vamos en la losta ya puedo decir que banco, quizá no es mi tipo de música, pero no está nada mal.
Gets real interesting towards the end. Not all for me, but pretty cool overall.
Obviously, I really like "Running Up That Hill", and "Cloudbursting" is solid too, but I haven't been able to get into the conceptual second half of this album, despite many years of trying. I guess Kate Bush just isn't for me, despite liking a lot of artists that often get compared to her.
I really like cloudbusting and watching you without me
An odd album, really. Bush's unique voicing dominates every song--a good thing and a bad thing. When she first broke onto the scene that distinctiveness grabbed listeners. Now it can feel like the point, which takes away from the actual subject of the song. So, odd. It can grab me and put me off.
nice album
A very good album overall - side 1 is superb, I've always found side 2 a bit harder to love.
Couple of really strong tracks
2nd appearance of Kate Bush technically after learning that she appeared on Peter Gabriel's "Melt", this album is more than just the album with that song from "Stranger Things"
Have I listened to this album before No How familiar am I with this album I only know Running Up That Hill How do I feel about this artist? Indifferent Pre-Listen Thoughts: A lot of people really like this album, maybe I’ll love it Favorite track(s): Running Up That Hill, Hello Earth Post-Listen Thoughts: I wanted to like it more than I did. Some parts of it were really good, and other parts were a little annoying. Maybe her other albums are better? Or maybe she’s just not for me.
Not for me, good voice but it's such a weird one that I never find myself enjoying the music.
Well produced now classic album
Some classics that have resurfaced in the age of TikTok. Pretty fun 80's vibes. I didn't notice anything exceptional.
I mean, yeah. It's good, but not exactly my thing. I like Running Up That Hill and Waking the Witch. Hello Earth is fascinating 6.5/10
good i like
The first half is great, but the second half always loses me. P.S. Running Up the Hill is obviously Great, but the real best song here is Mother Stands for Comfort. Talk about magic…
I knew thr first song but enjoyed the rest of the album
Not bad... But kind of droned on and on by the end... I wonder if she ever crested that hill? Stranger things have happened, they say...
1. Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) (★★★★⯨) 2. Hounds of Love (★★★☆☆) 3. The Big Sky (★★★☆☆) 4. Mother Stands For Comfort (★★☆☆☆) 5. Cloudbusting (★★⯨☆☆) 6. And Dream Of Sheep (★★⯨☆☆) 7. Under Ice (★★★⯨☆) 8. Walking The Witch (★⯨☆☆☆) 9. Watching You Without Me (★★⯨☆☆) 10. Jig Of Life (★★★☆☆) 11. Hello Earth (★★★☆☆) 12.
I love kate bush but every song feels like 20 minutes. big sky is the best song
as a stranger things fan i just liked the running up that hill... the remaining playlist was average
Yea, I dunno, fine. Not much stood out. I liked her other album on here better
Not the easiest album to listen to, especially after its opening glory, but I surprisingly enjoyed Under Ice, which I had slept on all this time. Also, Tori Amos owes a lot to Kate Bush, that's all.
Torn on whether this album is weirdly good or just weird.
Boy these synths are dated as hell now. Sometimes that can be cool but every track seems to rely on them. I'm also not a huge fan of Bush's voice. Hounds is a good but not great record to me.
mid, soms cva soms meh
Running up that hill (a deal with god) - 4 Hounds of love - 3 The big sky - 3 Mother stands for comfort - 3 Cloudbusting - 3 And dream of sheep - 3 Under ice - 3 Waking the witch - 2 Watching you without me - 2 Jig of life - 4 Hello earth - 2 The morning fog - 3
I don’t think I’d want to listen to any of these songs as a standalone single, but as an album it works.
was fine, running up hill is great, as well as #5 was enjoyable
Listen. Good, but after halfway throughbi couldnt listen anymore
Running Up That Hill is great. Nothing else does much for me.
I don't actually know if I've heard any other Kate Bush songs... Love the Irish Jig section of Jig of Life.
v strong start with running up the hill (my fave). second half of the album felt like on stage musical numbers. very theatrical, fun storytelling. jig of life was also a banger
more like can i see kate's bush yknow what im sayin 😏 a bit hit or miss for me but i do like running up that hill, even if stranger things kinda ruined it, but excluding that my fave was the big sky
High highs and boring lows. It really dragged towards the end after a great start. Running up that hill still awesome. Weird just but in the way I like.
it's good but idk not fully my cup of tea?
#554
Well, Running Up That Hill is a great song and thanks to Stranger Things for reminding us. This record is very unique other than that song. Not my taste but Kate Bush has endured for many years for some reason. This album won’t be added to my playlist, but she’s a legend.
Running up that hill is a banger. Thanks Stranger Things. Was it this popular before the show? Waking the Witch is kinda psycho but I like it. Jigg of Life +2. It felt like I was listening to a play or production and I kinda came around on it. Enjoyed the listen even if I didn’t love all the songs
The lady can sing and I could see myself enjoying it when in the right headspace, but this time around it just became background noise.
3/5. I enjoyed the first 2/3 or so, but felt like it droned on
What was she smoking while making this album, this album got it all!!
Great sound - if a bit dated and repetitive
Yeah… this is one of those albums I have always felt like I should like. I have not, historically, liked it. I tried to run up that hill. Really I did. Let’s see if time has changed me. It’s the drum machine. It’s the orchestration. I find it incredibly hard to listen to. I LIKE dissonance. But I NEED bass. I actually love her voice. But I find her vocals just… well almost grating the way they’re placed in the mix. I think I might hate this album. Mother Stands for Comfort might save this from a 2. Yeah. That song gives her voice room and puts it forward, where it belongs. And the run until the demonic voice in Waking the Witch is… good? I dive right in Under the ice. That right there is my song. But Satan has to ruin everything. And if it ended with Hello Earth, it would have ended strong. The mood is thoroughly ruined with The Morning Fog. I am down with art and experimentation. Kate undeniably has talent, her voice is amazing in fact and she’s quite a pianist. But… I continue to not like this album. It does not grow on me. I just become more aware of why I don’t like it. So… 3? I guess that’s fair. I gave Taylor Swift a 3. I mean really. Boolean: yes, yes powers that be, I guess I will admit that this is a good album to have heard now multiple times before I die. But hopefully never again.
Este disco es una cosa rarísima, con cosas como Jig of Life o Waking The Witch Qué rabia que Stranger Things tirase con la primera canción y fuera
Better with every listen.
Not my thing
Look, the 80s just aren’t for me. I’ve tried to enjoy her songs before given their cultural importance but it’s just not for me.
I've lost count of how many Kate Bush albums there are in this collection, but it's far too many; now that I look back, though, I realize that this is only the third of three, so I guess it's a testament to how painful I find her baby-voice brand of music. Ironically, though, this is probably the best of the lot, and really the only one we needed to get, although I'm not really sure what to make of the side two "Ninth Wave" suite. The album overall isn't as ridiculously over the top (and simply *bad*) as "The Dreaming", and she hadn't fallen as deeply into the horrible world-music-colonialism trap of "The Sensual World", so it's about as Goldilocks as we'll likely get for Kate Bush. This isn't saying all that much, I know, and there's no escape from her melodramatic performance-art videos (and *very* odd to see Donald Sutherland in "Cloudbusting"), but I suspect most of the die-hard Kate Bush fans just hoisted an ever-larger glass of Chardonnay as they danced along to the likes of "Running up the that hill" or "The big sky" or other anthemic pieces, and then settled into the impenetrable operatic Ninth Wave mini-concept-album (that would make for an incredible retro VR game soundtrack, I'll admit). I so wish this project didn't fixate on a small number of singer-songwriters, so we could get more variety (and less Kate Bush), but that's clearly not our fate.
By far the best of the 3 Kate Bush albums here--I listened 3 times and though I can't say I'm a big fan, this is an intriguing listen: some of the songs actually sound good and the entire album works conceptually.
Muchos sentimientos descubiertos por este álbum, l voz y el aura de algunas canciones me produjo melancolía
Skaver ibland men det finns nåt gött i varje låt
If every song was Running up that hill and Hounds of Love level this would be the greatest album of all time. Instead it’s one of the most min/maxed of all time. Such a strong start that ends in Irish music. I didn’t hate it but there was just a lack of cohesion.
Not bad, actually
First listen
This was slightly better than I was expecting it to be, but that’s not saying much because I expected it to be terrible.
There's something about 80's pop that I absolutely despise - I just don't enjoy it for what it is. Therefore I don't enjoy Kate Bush either; but. But even I cannot deny the strengths of her songwriting and ideas and even I found some of her songs compelling.
Not too bad.
Es muy chill
I knew the lyrics from techno remixes
un peu boring j'avoue j'ai pas la foi d'écouter en entier
Hyvä levy, vähän kuin proggis-poppia. 3,25/5.
I've never been a big Kate Bush fan so this album is hit and miss for me. Some songs are amazing, while others are just too weird. Favorite: Cloudbusting Would I listen to it again: Probably not
I enjoyed this much more than the last album of Kate's on here. Still not a voice I enjoy listening to for a full album even though I think she's incredible.
Me gustó mucho cv o
This really isn't my brand of real life or fantasy. It has a lot of hallmarks of 80s music but with her unique twist. I only really resonated with The Big Sky and found some parts of Waking the With very fun but others awful
I recognize that Kate Bush is very talented, but this was not really my thing. A lot of the songs were just too slow for me to get into and a lot of them sounded too similar. Running Up That Hill is a pretty good song, but I work in a grocery store that has overplayed it since Stranger Things. I also liked The Big Sky and Jig of Life. Every other song I was very meh about. I mean my favorite is Jig of Life which is completely different from anything else on the album. I just really dig Celtic music. Overall, not bad, but not going to replaying. Favorite Track - Jig of Life Least Favorite Track - Waking the Witch ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Quite good. Kind of what I expected from the tracks I knew
Essential listening for fans. You can hear where they're headed the next few years.
Sophie - I like a bit of Kate Bush but I don’t think I’d listen to anything on this other than the ones I already knew (Cloudbusting & Running Up That Hill). I find that I like Kate Bush songs rather than albums in general so that checks out. Still enjoyable though! 3/5
Soulful and heartfelt, but definitely a product of its era. Running Up That Hill i had gained a ton of popularity due to Stranger Things, but there’s a lot to like here beyond just that song. Great vocals are the most notable, but excellent use of various instruments and mixing elements some as well. Though, a touch esoteric at times. Still, very solid and worth the acknowledgement.
favorite: Running Up That Hill
I would think this was a modern pop record if I was blindly given this. It is incredibly modern sounding even though it is nearly 40 years old. Overall, I just don’t really love pop music. Although this is some odd, very weird, experimental pop. Parts sound like a movie soundtrack. Very unique and interesting, but probably won’t listen again. That’s enough for 3 stars, even though I personally didn’t totally enjoy.
a lot of it was good. waking the witch pisses me the fuck off though
Obvs running up that hill is a monumental song but I've never actually listened to the full hounds of love album somehow?? Her voice and the way she builds a song up and up and up is wonderful! Every song so far feels like it could be used in a film. She packs so many emotions into these songs, I'd love to see a story woven around the album! I really like cloudbusting Woah the second half of the album is a switch up! I read up on the ninth wave and how this could have been a separate album, very cool narrative and I particularly loved the concept of watching you without me. It's funny bc on the one hand im intrigued by The Ninth Wave in the sense that its feels super experimental and bizarre (in a good way mostly) but at the same time it definitely isn't easy listening to me. Wouldn't reach for it casually but I respect the ideas and enjoy the narrative! I'm actually surprised the album reached no. 1 in the uk? Feels like one for the music nerds especially the ninth wave portion but the first few songs are super catchy so maybe that explains it? Or maybe the people just yearned for bush, who am I to object to that??? 6/10
Is a so interesting album with deeps letters but I should not hear the whole album with frecuency.
good stuff including the Strangers Thing classic. But not for me either.
80er durch und durch. Nicht schlecht
Super
Not bad
3.5
I still find Kate Bush a revelation but I didn’t find this as daring as “The Dreaming”.
Best Song: Cloudbusting Worst Song: Mother Stands For Comfort (By Default)
It's creativity and theatrical style are undeniable, but at times it feels a bit too over-the-top for my taste. There are definitely standout tracks I can enjoy here and there, but as a full album experience, it’s not something I’d revisit often.
Started off strong but just kind of tapered off with filler
Whimsical and mystical
starting songs were good
Dramatic sounds, big voices, soft words, whimsy and weird. “Running Up That Hill” is a pretty iconic track, it’s good she got her resurgence with the youths.
Her voice PMO so bad
The album is completely carried by Running Up That Hill. Vocals have a kinda mystical feel, reinforced by the lyrics.
I've heard the first track a bunch and never knew who sang it. Now I do. I guess it's had a resurgence due to Stranger Things recently. Anyway, this album has definite industrial vibes, especially a track like Waking the Witch, which sounds like a cross between KMFDM and Moroder. It's more enjoyable for me than lots of new wavish stuff. Not sure I'd go back to it though. Maybe a 3.
5/10 not my vibe at all but some very prominent songs cultury and fantastic voice
When to listen: airy, wispy, manic pixie vibes. When I started the album I thought "damn why do people only talk about 'Running Up That Hill' this entire album is awesome" and then we got to the weird album end songs and I was like ok ya I know why. So yea, liked the start of the album. The end not so much.
I liked the spacey, synthy sounds of the album. This was definitely a unique album that I enjoyed listening to, with a few standout songs such as Running Up That Hill and Walking the Witch.
Honestly, this album was pretty good. The highlights were probably: running up that hill, the big sky, hello earth, and the morning fog. The only song I skipped was Waking the Witch (because it made me want to barf in my mouth!) Overall, I’d give it a 3.7/5! 🙂
Vers Groix
Lots of variety here which I enjoy. Great vocals and synth work but ultimately not my cup of tea. Stars are for admiration of talent, not necessarily enjoyment of substance.
This is the best Kate Bush album I’ve ever heard, but it’s a low bar.
Completely good, but quite 'samey' throughout the album.
Stranger Things really brought this back. Kate’s got a great voice. This is real 80s stuff. The pop is fine, but it’s never my favorite. There are some standouts, obviously track 1 is a banger, I really enjoyed 'Watching You Without Me' and 'Jig of Life' as well, the whole album has this ethereal fantastical quality to it which I think I can get behind. Almost sounds like it could have been the alternate soundtrack to something like Labyrinth.
Running Up That Hill is a great song. The rest of the album doesn’t quite reach that same level, but it’s a fun listen.
First listened on 25th, 27th and 29th October 2024. Favourite song is Hounds Of Love. My least favourite Kate Bush, but still great.
Not gonna lie, this one tested my patience. I get Kate Bush is appealing and has talent, but I'll throw a respectable 3 at this album even if I fully don't see the vision.
As features on stranger things, this album's transition from 80s pop to less traditional approaches in the later tracks showed a variety of styles
OK I guess
(4/7) once we got to the top of the hill things started to get weird real fast
Wierd but fun to listen to, not sure if I could daily listen.
Had some good songs in there, but also some boring ones.
Gaf marga sénsa, en ég lyfti þessari ekki uppúr þristi, eins og opnunarlagið er mikill banger.
7/10
3.5/5. I love morning Fog
Un bon album mais pas mon style, j'ai préféré la 1re moitié notamment Running Up That Hill (entendu dans Stranger Things), je mettrais 3/5 ou 3,5/5
Quintessential 80s music
Running up the hill and jig of life were good, but other than that it was just kinda boring except for some parts of songs having interesting sound features.
2.5 - I wanted to like this more. Maybe I would if I gave it a few more listens.
Very calm and mystical vibes, only song I liked was running up the hill ofc. I give it a solid 6/10
Jig of life
This one I waffled between a 2 and a 3. I liked the first half of the album more than the second, but the Jig of Life is pushing it to a 3. I do love a good jig.
Running up that hill forever belongs to Max, the baddest ass of our favorite D&D party. I dare you to tell me you didn't get misty eyed as she ran towards the portal and finally reunited with Lucas. Epic. Stranger Things made that song more meaningful than Kate Bush could ever have dreamed. Anyway, there is an entire album and we finally get the full picture of what Max was listening to on her Sony Walkman. Well we learned Max is badass, but she has questionable taste in music. Maybe she was drawn to Vecna's guest vocal on waking the witch? I will say I appreciate what Kate Bush was going for. She creates an immersive experience with her music. I felt it, and appreciate how well executed it was. Just because I didn't like it doesn't make it bad, and this is an example of quality that just doesn't appeal to me.
Best Song: Running up that Hill The album Stranger Things made relevant again. It was ok, not as good as others in this genre and not Kate Bush's best album, in my opinion. 3/5.
gut, mehr memorable als das andere
Whimsical music for fairies and women - an interesting blend of progressive orchestral and 80's pop that somehow found wide appeal. However, the highlights of this album are Running Up That Hill and the several other songs that feature strikingly similar marching-style rhythms and building arrangements. The remaining tracks are mostly not memorable for their music; however, the bass receives an honorable mention for being deep and slapping.
This was an odd album overall. For starters, it is a shame that Stranger Things ground the best song on this album into the dirt. It is actually a great song, and it is hard to listen to now. As the album went along, I was surprised how incredibly dated sounding it is (not in a good way), and some of the earlier songs for my ears were just terrible. Corny, dated music and maudlin lyrics and singing. Towards the end, I found myself appreciating some of the more experimental stuff. So it wasn't the lost journey it started out as. I have a lot of respect for Kate Bush, but the music doesnt stand the test of time for me.
2.92
Very interesting and experimental! I enjoyed discovering Kate Bush. It was a bit too weird for my taste, though. Some songs, like Waking the Witch, didn't feel like songs and were hard to get through. Jig of Life was such a fun surprise! It was also cool to hear Running Up That Hill in full (I only knew the chorus).
Insomma
Running Up That Hill is fantastic and a couple of other songs were enjoyable but there were a couple of avant garde numbers that didn’t do much for me
I really want to like Kate Bush, but after getting all her albums on this list, I just can't get into her. This one is clearly the best, and "Running Up That Hill" and "Hounds Of Love" are great songs, but the rest is just alright. I appreciate her talent and how different she is from other artists, but overall I think it's just not for me. This would get a 3.5 if I could, but it's just not strong enough for me to give it 4 stars.
A very strong half, but the more experimental second half didn't work for me. 'Jig Of Life' felt particularly jarring.
Good, artistically interesting album, never heard it before. Not exactly my cup of tea though.
Excellent album, glad this was rediscovered by a new generation.
Was looking forward to this as it opens with a 5 star track, but the rest of it is 3 stars unfortunately!
Sonido muy experimental, pop viejo estilo cindy lauper, me gustaron mucho algunas canciones, destacó cloudbusting y running up that hill, otras tanto no me gustaron, pero en general buen álbum, me encanta la estética que tiene también
Hounds Of Love has a nostalgic and distinct 80s pop sound, and (Aside from Running Up That Hill) I find this album to be a good listening experience. 3.6/5
A very 80s album with some good tracks that has been revived thanks to Stranger Things. Highlights: “Hounds of Love” and “Cloudbusting”
I want to dance the jig of life 🧬 This album art is beautiful. Something I haven't really talked about yet but definitely an important factor. Iconic. I do love whimsical experimental pop.
I think why Kate Bush has some of the best pop albums of the 80s is I would feel wrong just calling her music "pop music". You never really know where her records are gonna go. Hounds of Love is the perfect example of that. Side one filled with some of the best pop songs of the 80s, and a more out there conceptual side two (that doesn't completely land for me) High 3
Stranger things has done wonders for this album first couple of songs are good. Thennnnn the fall off happens. I feel like I should've been one of those red and black rooms where they do film when listening to the album.
We just got to love Hounds of Love. The purple vibe is everything. I've always heard of Running Up That Hill from young and it's one of those songs where it's just timeless🙏🏾🛐 Everything else feels like the type of music where the artist truly puts themself out there. I admire her vision and her vocals are excellent. Some songs struck me more than others such as Running Up That Hill and Gig of Life but I do appreciate Kate Bush :)
Får mycket whimsical vibes av den, men åter igen inte riktigt mig smak
Есть хит Есть песня про маму и песня про папу Есть про любовь Душевный вайб исходит Но для меня эти инструменты и вокал просто не складываются
Pretty cool actually
This is a weird album that I actually listened to twice to really understand it, not that I think I fully get it still. Someone in another review called this "prog pop" and I think that's a great label. This is a pop music concept album about...something. The first half of the album has what I would consider the singles but the second half, starting with "Under Ice" is where it gets more interesting and pushes the boundaries of pop music. I can imagine a lot of people got turned off by the second half because it's a weird listen. None of the songs, not even the revived "Running Up That Hill", are particularly catchy I feel, but the instrumental stuff and Bush's unique vocals make it stand out. I'm still not sure if I really like it, though I respect it as a work of art. I think I'd actually take the second half over the first just because it's so strange. I'm glad I listened to it but there are other concept albums and art-rock artists that I prefer.
Music for theater kids
Eh
Running up that hill : the beat sounds like dogs barking and getting more and more intense. The percussions at the 3 minute mark sound amazing. I’ve always heard the minute snippet from the Stranger Things series, but the song sounds much better than I remembered. The voice of Kate Bush, the intensity, you feel like you’re part of her crazy run she’s taking you in. Hounds of love : Back vocals still sounding like dogs barking in the beginning. The big sky : Guitar goes wild on the big sky, with the claps and percussions, making a great mix overall. Mother stands for comfort : Sounds like she’s flying in the sky with her keyboard, levitating. Under Ice : Feels stressful, like I’m standing on a thin line of ice. Jig of life : Making me feel like a pirate, chanting a sea shanty. Solid 6/10 for this album ; it has so much emotion, energy
Had to give this two listens to get it. I really like the vibe and some of the songs on here are great, but I just don't think I love it as much as I want to Favorite Songs: Running Up That Hill, Waking the Witch
Very 80s -- impressively composed + produced, but not my style.
Wonderful to listen to all the way through.
oooo uhhh uhh
Highlights: Running Up That Hill, Hounds Of Love and Cloudbusting. 3.2
very 80s but a decade i grew up in and love. I know the main songs off this album but not the rest so yes was an interesting listen.
3 all timers on here. Rest was…okay. Idk how to rate an album where you love 3 but not the rest.
72. running up that hilll
Honestly I might have liked it more if Stranger Things had not played the same 5 seconds over and over
Running Up That Hill - 8.5/10 Hounds Of Love - 7/10 The Big Sky - 7/10 Mother Stands For Comfort - 9/10 (wow that's a really big surprise from the amount of streams it has!) Cloudbusting - 9.5/10 And Dream Of Sheep - 8/10 Under Ice - 7/10 Waking The Witch - 4/10 (what is going on) Watching You Without Me - 5/10 (its not bad, im just bored) Jig Of Life - 7.5/10 (Very different to the rest of the album, kind of unexpected but I'm not complaining) Hello Earth - 9/10 (I actually don't feel like this song drags despite it's runtime, I like the melancholy feeling it gives and the creepy sound of it all, fits really well) The Morning Fog - 8/10 (Good song but this feels like it should've been before "Hello Earth" on the album? That song felt way more like a closer than this, and even ended perfectly. Weird way to end it but good album nonetheless)
Very good lots of interesting sounds and a diverse album i was not expecting the jig song. favorite is the first couple songs 4/5
Running Up That Hill - легенда, інші пісні теж звучать хорошо
I quite liked it
her voice is very pretty and all the songs have this majestic feel to them fav song: Waking The Witch
Kate Bush ran up that hill so Tori Amos could do her thing.
I expected to love this and was a little disappointed. Running up that hill deserves its modern run as a hit but the rest of the album fell a little flat. I liked the ambition and didnt dislike it, but it was just fine
I don't think I could listen to this one regularly but Kate Bush's voice is so beautiful and haunting, especially with the orchestral arrangements. The theatrical parts on Waking the Witch were kind of weird.
Great voice, couple of great songs 3
Reminds me of old corporate America. Very gloomy, good voice. It’s almost like a tale of a medieval love story. Kate Bush is very creative with this album, however I don’t think the execution is all there. There is no real theme behind it all. It would have been interesting to see an overarching theme behind the whole album. It sounds a little too random. Lastly, technically, the albums, mastering, and mixing could have been better. The important part of these songs is not the instrumental, it’s the voice, and sometimes it hides behind poorly mixed instrumentals. However, drums and Orchestra instruments sound very clean and crisp. Especially the drums.
De eerste twee nummers zijn iconic. De rest van het album is leuk en experimenteel, maar zal deze niet nog een keer opzetten. Ik kan me niet echt een gelegenheid bedenken waarbij ik in deze mood ben
i liked 'cloudbusting' and 'and dream of sheep'
Started good but was all samey after a bit
Some cool stuff. Not my jam, but worth listening to at least once in your life.
her voice is the only thing that made me stay
Running up that Hill is great, and there is some creativity here. But it's not exciting to me. 3/5.
I get why people like Kate Bush
I’m sure Kate Bush has many, many fans, however this recording was just not my cup of tea.
definitely very 80s in moments, but stand out, timeless moments. Kate Bush walked so Tori Amos and all the Lilith babes could even be.
Gets kinda repetitive 5.5/10
it was cool ig
A haunting, witchy album full of desperate yearning. While I appreciated the albums sonic depth, and could listen to Running Up that Hill on repeat, the whole piece didn't quite resonate with me. Perhaps it's not my genre. 5/10
Wanted to LOVE this but really still only love Running Up That Hill, and not as much as I did 30 yrs ago. But still a good record for its time.
That's crazy cause I just finished season 4 of Stranger Things this past weekend.
fine, 80s didnt finish
Not awful. Not amazing. Okay enough and being brought back by Stranger Things. I can appreciate it for what it is.
Okay, so the first song is really popular, but I'm not sure if it got popular recently, or if that's something that's been popular for quite a while, but it was alright having it playing in the background, and same with the rest of the songs. They all pretty chill, nothing too great, but to be honest nothing too bad either.
Kate Bush trivia: she is the first woman to reach #1 on the UK singles chart with a woman penned song. i like this album. i haven't listened to the full album since a middle school birthday party. Obviously, it has the #1 hit "running up that hill" (which last year, reached #1 again, thanks to "Stranger Things"). i also really like "Big Sky" and "Cloudbusting" on this one.
Very 80s. I appreciate that it is a very unique style. It doesn't feel like it sells out, while still being accessible. Very spacious sound. Lyrics are good, songwriting is not traditional.
Wimsical light hearted 80s sounding alblum. No substance or memorable
Big and fancy!
One amazing song. Some okay ones.
Need to listen
Kind of sucked
Muutama tuttu biisi jo entuudestaan ja vakio kuuntelussa (Running up that hill ja Hounds of Love), mukavaa kasaripoppia nuo 1-6. biisit. 7. biisin kohdalla sävy muuttuu aika huomattavasti ja 8. Waking the Witch tuntuu olevan jo ihan eri levyä. Ilmeisesti tämän levyn 6-12 biisit ovat yksi iso kokonaisuus. 8. biisi melko dream-like vibat, ehkä levyn loppu pää dream world tms teemaltaan. 10. biisi yhtäkkiä folk music..? Loppu arvosanaksi sanoisin 3,5 / 5 koko levystä. En välttämättä kuuntelisi koko levyä jatkossa, vaan jatkaisin muutamalla lempparilla jatkossakin.
I have never been able to go all-in Kate Bush. I have all of the respect for her music and appreciate how avant garde her stylings are and certainly were. I’m thankful for her experimentation and dedication to taking risks. She’s amazing and incredible.
Good
Eclectic, ethereal with some pirate themes. What’s not to like ?
Running up that Hill: so good and will always think of Sadie sink running Under Ice: least favorite so far like I even skipped it Waking The Witch: the most interesting and Lowkey scary with the monster adlibs Watching you without me: I like the intro and the soft vibe of the whole song Jig of Life: IRISH JIG Good vibe just more so background. Maybe was wanting something more hype, but beautiful voice.
Running up that hill is so nostalgic and Stranger things. Hello Earth is haunting.
Wiki mentions instruments - bodhrán, didgeridoo, and bouzouki, along with the usual guitars, drums, strings, and synth. Hoping for good stuff. I recognize the voice and a few lines from Running Up That Hill, though I don't know from where. I am not converted to fan. Too new agey? if that is a word one could use. Listened before? N Saved tracks? N Favorite tracks? ⭐⭐ 2 stars for its witchy magic imagery
Aww, look at the snuggly puppers. +10 points for those floppy ears. So that was...weird. Beautiful, but weird. I liked Jig Of Life.
Not my thing but it’s at least interesting, and running up that hill is a bop.
Woohoo! Don't know if it will be good, but Kate Bush is always at least a little fun. Listening notes: -Running up that hill deserves its recognition. -Hounds of Love is great -I think a lot of the middle section feels etheral but unremarkable. -The heavy use of strings on this is really interesting. By Under Ice I think it works. -Waking the Witch sounds like how I imagining waking a witch would go, but I'm not sure I like that (personally, I would let the witch sleep). It's kinda impressive range though. Review: Mostly I think this is poppy 80s stuff that at times rises to really great and showcases incredible range. It's easily between a 3 and a 4. I quite liked the back half after waking the witch (though English artists doing Irish stuff a la Jig of Life so often has the connotation of them looking down on their inferior backcountry neighbor). I think 3 is right here.
ngl, the Irish rapping on "Jig of Life" was a jumpscare for me. I found moments where I really enjoyed this. It feels very much like a predecessor to the new age folk that came out of this region of Europe in the succeeding decade. There were also moments where (and maybe it's because I was working at the same time) I found that I'd lost track of the album completely. Because I'm terrible at hearing lyrics, I think this is where it was a bit of a misfire for me today. Reading about it, it seems I've missed some pretty major things regarding her use of electronic production, so I'm hoping to revisit this again at another point.
Solid mature album good songs
Ive never listened to a Kate Bush album, but it turns out that a Kate Bush album sounds exactly like I expected a Kate Bush album to sound Really liked the ballad "and dream of sleep". This song contrasted nicely against the rest of the album which had the KB signature theatrical delivery & unpredictable phrasing . A couple more slow of these slower "straight" songs like this please Kate. 2.5 star
Some good songs I liked, some gave me a bit of anxiety. Overall, decent album
Ok
This is really different and interesting. This isn’t my typical listen. Obviously after Stranger Things, I’m familiar with the opening song. The 80s pop sound that follows on the first half is really interesting. There are some nice slower songs too. But the second half has some wild swings. It’s very out there and not as easy a listen as the more pop centric stuff. Some is great. Love the closing track. It’s really interesting. Tentatively a 3/5 because I just don’t connect to the middling stuff. Maybe a 3.5. 80s synth pop is never something I explored much of, but always find myself actually enjoying some of the sound of this genre whenever I come across it. The title track I think is actually better than Running Up That Hill. It’s so infused with pop energy.
I like the less artsy and less irish-folky (?) the best.
Pretty much a whole album of slightly different versions of the same song, but decent.
i can see why people like it. not for me. overrated as hell
Continues to grow on me as it went on. Can't believe she didn't end up a bigger act. *Listened to again and didn't resonate, edited down to a 3/5.*
I think I like the idea of this album more than I like actually listening to it. A gothic pop concept album complete with Latin chanting? Should be right up my alley, but it didn’t grab me like I wanted it to. Props to Kate Bush for doing something different - she was well ahead of her time. Reminds me of Ethel Cain! Might need to revisit in October
