Some hits but meh otherwise
Solid album with a handful of classics. The drummer does seem to phone it in a bit though, he keeps time well but there's just nothing that interesting in what he's doing.
Not too much stood out from one song to the next, but the guitar riffs are really cool. There's some funky bass in there too that I liked. Fave track(s): I Got the Six, Dirty Dog
Fun album with some classics
A high 3 I think. Its fun to listen to for sure but I don't think it stands out above any other 80s rock.
Beardsssssss
A little too Duck Dynasty for me, but overall was a fun listen
It is hard to be objective about music so deeply worn into my brain. The opening of Gimme All Your Lovin' is so iconic and snapped me right back to the 80's. The hits are still great, the lyrics really haven't aged well but the guitar still rocks. Frustratingly, though, the Album Generator previously served me some earlier ZZ Top, which doesn't do slickified Eliminator any favors.
if i’m in the mood to listen to Zz top. i would play this album. having said that im rarely in the mood to listen to Zz top
Outside of the four familiar classics, which by no means is a flop, the rest of the album is fairly 80s ZZ Top rock. 3.5 / 5.
Sharp Dressed Man reminds me of Duck Dynasty
I am a ZZ Top fan, but have never really liked this album.
TV Dinners singlehandedly put this album below 3 for me. There are a couple hits but meh otherwise. 2.8 but rounding to 3 because this ranking system sucks
There are some good, catchy songs on this album. But there is also a lot of crap. And most of the lyrics are sophomoric as are the "jokes". I struggle to enjoy lyrics that need the word "really" or "kinda" or that turn one syllable words into two, like "the-uh" or "i-is" to finish out a line. Bugs me. And nothing bugs me more lyrically than a "Really, really". Shows a lack of imagination if you ask me. Also, the repetitive keyboard (I think) technique throughout every songs gets old. It's their sound, but I don't dig on it after about two songs. Still get's three stars cause there are some genuine classics on it. Four classics with four role players (Bad Girl, for instance) would've made for a great album. But in my opinion, this is four classics with four or five that should've been left on the cutting room floor (TV Dinners, for instance).
The start of Eliminator is like being run over by a V8 engine. At this point ZZ Top began using synths and drum machine more heavily, and the result is an extremely tight and tempo filled album. Most of Eliminator is just pure fun with the band fully acknowledging that they are here to party, show off and have a good time - and nothing else. My interest fades away on the way too long “I Need You Tonight” and side B isn’t as exciting as the beginning either. But this is nonetheless still extremely fun to rock along to.
80s beardy rock that chugs along. Synth and drum machine elements combine with the guitars and drive the songs forward. Front loaded with the bangers, but pretty catchy throughout. What this lacks in variety it makes up for in riffs and beards. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Sharp Dressed Man Date listened: 26/12/22
Pretty good, better than I thought it was gonna be.
It's turning out rock isn't always my thing, it's generally too simplistic for me, relying more on attitude and tamber than melodic interest. I enjoy the singing but it fails to hold my attention
Rrrrrrockin' it!
Best geinig.
This is apparently what happens when Billy Gibbons listens to a little too much Depeche Mode. The hits you're familiar with still hold up well, proving they don't need the videos (except for Legs, that's a terrible song that I firmly believe only broke through because of the video MTV deemed clever). In the interest of full disclosure, I didn't appreciate that little ol' band from Texas until they made a documentary for Netflix, with an obvious appearance by Billy Bob Thornton. I mainly think of ZZ Top music as strip club music. That's either a feature or a benefit. Probably both depending on how often one frequents strip clubs.
What is probably their most iconic album, ZZ Top made a name for themselves with their take on Texas Rock and Blues. While the lyrics ooze with subtle misogyny the speed and musicianship hold their own and are the shining part of this. This may be mainstream Top 40 for their catalogs, but it is often what people think of for this band, despite their deep catalog.
ZZ Top embraces MTV and churns out music with a hi-hat driven straight forward danceable beat. I honestly don’t mind the danceable blues aspect of this album. What really irks me is the absolute sameness of the album. If you’ve heard a couple of songs you could be forgiven for wondering if you’ve got a few songs on repeat. The hits are good and the rest feels like variations on those. The musicianship is fine, the shuffling guitar is a great representation of Texas blues, but unfortunately the whole package just doesn’t do much for me.
I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could. I think ZZ Top is fun and every once in a while I'll put on one of their hits. But holy crap, this album was repetitive. Every song sounded exactly the same.
I feel like listening to this at 11am on a monday is not the intended listening experience, need to be in a pickup truck on the way to go fishing or in a dive bar somewhere. Kind of goofy. Fun though. Still love Sharp Dressed Man. Lost steam in the middle.
I think this is a nice album that's very indicative of its style of rock, though the songs all sound pretty similar
Dumb songs about nothing, but catchy as hell. Decent album overall.
- I need you tonight: 8,5/10 - I got the six: 9/10 - Sharp dressed man: 8,5/10 - Got me under pressure: 9/10 - Thug: 8/10 - Legs: 8,5/10 - Gimme all your lovin': 9,5/10 - TV Dinners: 8'75/10 - Dirty Dog: 6/10 - If I could only flag her down: 8/10 - Bad girl: 9,5/10
Album was better than I remembered. The poppy MTV hits are catchy but kind of quasi ZZTop.
started strong, finished like me in bed
You can sure tell this is American from the get go. I've never been a ZZ listener, so was disappointed that they didn't live up to my mind's eye of the legend.
Some down and dirty early 80s rock. Couldn't get the image of frizzy beards out of my head.
Öppnar starkt med Gimme All Your Lovin' och sen Sharp Dressed Man som spår tre som är kanonbra låtar. Men resten når inte upp i samma nivå, tyvärr.
Great rock album, it has pretty much everything I expect out of an 80s commercial rock. From dancy rock to ballads I enjoyed all tracks, but I did had one issue, I wasn't blown away by anything, yes, I had fun and enjoyed every second of it, but I had nothing special to say about it, regardless of how much fun it was I wouldn't add it to my monthly rotation since I believe I'll get tired of it after a while
Classic rock' blues
Great bluesy rock 🤷♂️👍
High energy mullet staring me down from the past, mixed emotions tbh
Very decent
Expected a boring wait between hits but it was actually quite a steady album.
1st album since Alex Chudacoff suggested I listen to the 1001 albums.
Great musicianship. I still love the songs from this album that were released as singles. I think whoever was in charge picked the right ones. Except TV Dinners - I liked the B-side much more (Cheap Sunglasses) The rest of the songs weren’t bad, but didn’t make me feel like I missed anything. Fun fact: Billy Gibbons was on the show ‘Bones’ as one of the main character’s bad-ass guitar-playing dad. The song ‘Thug’ had an Eagles vibe. And brought to mind the theme from Seinfeld. I also am sorry I gave OK Computer 3 stars. It deserves 4. Karma Police has been in my head all weekend.
Sounds like the rural county fairs from my youth. 3.5 stars for nostalgia and the top of the record.
This was pretty fun, if a bit samey. Might revisit.
Molto energico, tipicamente americano. Bei assoli.
Iconic singles and videos in ‘Gimme All Your Lovin’’, ‘Sharp Dressed Man’ and ‘Legs’ from unlikely rock superstars ZZ Top. While it’s undeniably a fun record, outside of the hits, there’s a fair bit of filler.
Could have been a collection of all time zztop hits. So many rockers on this
Better than I thought it would be.
Never been a fan of ZZ Top, but I did find myself tapping my feet to this. It was fun, but I wouldn't actively seek it out.
Gimme all your lovin is an incredible song. The rest is fine. I can’t believe this song was only in two things. I swear it was in bill and teds excellent adventure but soundtrack claims it wasn’t. Must be thinking of the two heads are better than one song
This album was huge when it came out, I was in middle school and it got a ton of airplay. I was pretty indifferent to it and over the years most of the hits just became background noise. Listening to it in its entirety I have to give them props—while they turned the gritty Texas sound they were known for into something highly-produced, I did enjoy some of the tracks that weren't played to death such as Got Me Under Pressure, TV Dinners, and Bad Girl. Giving it a 3 but I'm really a 3.5 on it.
When I hear ZZ Top all I think is 'old tired rock' due to all the rock radio I listened to as a kid. However, I will say, even though it is overplayed and tired these guys are/were pretty talented. Plus this music just makes me wish I was driving a fast car through some long desert roads.
It's fine, but not for me. 3/5
Some great songs for sure, not my favourite, but would listen again.
meeeeh
This is what i feel about hard rock of 80's!Overall Classic but not stunning.
Fy faen endelig noe ordentlig rock. Ganske Harry i blant
I mean, it's fun for sure. But all the singles are just so played out for me at this point, and the deep tracks range from cool to super forgettable. I would have enjoyed this a whole lot more 10 years ago lol.
This is classic dad rock. It's fine, and there are couple classic rock songs, but the album gets repetitive very quickly. Like most 80s music, they don't seem to know how to end songs, so most end with a long slow instrumental fade. Songs like Legs and TV Dinners are almost a meme as well. Best Songs: Sharp Dressed Man, Gimme All Your Lovin' Worst Songs: I Got the Six, Dirty Dog
Better than expected
Huge fan of the earlier ZZ Top stuff. Although this album has a few good rockers, it's not one I enjoy all that much.
You know, I don't care for ZZ Top, but this was quite decent. Would I play it again? Probably not. I wouldn't be bothered by it, though.
Mah. I never really got ZZ Top, but I had one of their early albums just last week and realised they did start out kind of legit in the 70s. They’ve refined that now and condensed it down to a simpler, more pop oriented sound. I was leaning towards a 4 but when the album finished, I got Radar Love by Golden Earring as a suggestion. It immediacy felt more driving, funky, energetic and focused. ZZ Top are just super average.
There’s something very punchy about the production on this album… and some real bangers scattered throughout… strong 3
Guitars, hotrods, suits, and beards. You know what you are getting from the start with this album and it drives all the way through with flames shooting out the tailpipe. Is that good for the car? For the world? I don't think it matters b/c it is lots of guitar on top of more guitar.
decent southern rock, liked it more than i thought
Not a huge fan of 80s Top, mostly cause of the tacky slap bass that ruins Thug. Sharp Dressed Man is a killer tune though - highly recommend watching The Beards like a version.
A nice listen, they go well together, front end has some hits.
Not bad <Obama face>
Kinda fun. Although we have been having a lot of music on the list that's pretty similar to this
Bad girls and thugs and more girls and legs and TV dinners and girls and sharp dressing and girls and crank up the synths and drum machine and if every track hasn’t been used in a montage in the middle of a movie from the 80s it would not be surprising.
Never herd of them… A generic drum pattern brings on the albums opener gimme all your lovin’ it’s solid but just a very of its time 80’s rock song which is awesome but not a favourite. I love the playful yet crunchy guitar riff on got me under pressure, the lyrics seem to be that generic “ rock n roll” stuff but it’s not badly done. Sharp dressed man is a song that I definitely vaguely recognise as one of the better written songs of the 80’s, the chorus reminds me a bit of nick caves “ red right hand” by the way he sings the line “everybody’s crazy about the sharp dressed man”. I love the long intro to the 6 minute long song I need you tonight, this song has a sense of grandness that the rest of the album seems to lack until now. I got the six is a very odd choice to close off the first half of the album being a short rocker not memorable but not bad. The album goes in a poppier direction with Legs I love the synth work on this one but it’s just not a “must listen” song overall. Thug sounds odd having a robotic yet tribal instrumental and some cool bitty guitars break. The lyrics are still not great but they’re not the worst thing ever. The album goes back to its normal feeling with TV dinners great instrumentals dull and stupid lyrics. I don’t know why but dirty dog ( instrumentally) sounds like a dark sister track to legs with the repetitive bouncing synths . Lyrically, well no this band can’t write well in that department. The penultimate track on the album If I could only flag her down is solid, well written, poppy but slightly bluesier. It feels a bit filler amongst this album but not bad. The album closes on Bad Girl an odd pick for a closer ( even if there’s nothing really to pick from) it just feels poorly done. Typical 80’s pop rock great singles a few other good songs but no real substance to it.
Classic. Highlights are the ones I hear on the radio.
Driving beat, classic tunes, plenty of samey fillers
some good hits, some utter shit.. also reading about it don't like how they ripped of their pal
In which three bonobos tap into their jungle roots and lay down as much funk as they do dumbell boogie and metallic riffing. A minor triumph and, given the year of release, reminder to the overglammed, overemoting, honky, horndog arena rockers of the time that the basics are just groovy on their own, thank you very much.
Totally C average rock. As enjoyable as a Big Mac and fries. Any song from this album would fit in nicely on the soundtrack to a 1980s teen comedy.
Fine southern rock. I get it's popularity but it was a time and a place for me in HS.
Enjoyable. I have been passing on the fact that most rock music during the dreadful 80’s kept the good music going
Will never be my favourite music, but more too it than I would have thought.
Fun album, with some solid songs and great guitars.
A bit more "pop" sounding rock album. There is some catchy songs on here. However, I find most of it to be somewhat bland. At most it's decent. Highlights: I Need You Tonight
This album was fun to listen to. I enjoyed the classics at the start but as the album moved on I began to feel like I was listening to a guitarist jamming over a backing track or a youtube guitar instructional video.
There is something elegant in the simplicity of the concept here - like with the Ramones. But really, in this case it's not for me. Trivia question - which is the only ZZ Top member without a beard - the drummer, Frank Beard! And then there is the Sesame St parody for the letter Z - classic line and the end from the Billy Gibbons muppet: "Only band I've ever played with that can fall asleep and keep playing the blues"!
Not a bad 80s rock album.
Makes me want to go to a Hard Rock Cafe and drink a £6.99 lemonade.
Starts off great. Rather single faceted towards the end 3/5
Gruff vocals, plenty of screaming guitar solos but a little bit samey and not really my cuppa tea. But to be fair, it was ok rock music.
Archetypal rock but better than I had anticipated
It may be a bit cheesy rock, but they're not taking it too seriously, and made a good album for good times. I'm torn between giving it a high 3 stars or a low 4 stars.
The hits are the hits. The rest is fine but not memorable. Cover art 5/5 instantly recognisable
Semi-decent fast paced rock. I enjoyed the use of synthesizers on a few of the songs, which I wasn’t expecting from a ZZ Top album. Biggest turnoff we’re the lyrics consistently being creepy or just simply boiling down to “I want to have sex with this pretty woman”. 5/10
Machinelike cool.
Genre: Hard Rock 3/5 6 albums ago, I received the other ZZ Top album, Tres Hombres, a much more straight blues rock album with some slick lead guitar work, but overall it didn't bust my nut. I could almost copy/paste that sentiment for Eliminator, but I'd replace "straight blues" with "heavy synth". The 80s is all over this, but ZZ Top doesn't let it get too much in the way of their rockin' ways. Gimme All Your Lovin and Sharp Dressed Man are both great hard pop rock jams, both huge hits, both dripped in synth backdrops, and both with knockout lead guitar playing from Billy Gibbons. The rest of the album was entirely formulaic, with not much to comment on, but the bass playing in Thug is essential listening and nearly each song features Gibbons lettin' loose in some way, which is always a good time. Decent album.
So I loved the videos back when I was young. Songs are decent but I love the older ZZ Top much better.
Not quite as fun as the Bon Jovi but still pretty good!
Not a big fan of cars, but I guess that shiny red eliminator is pretty fascinating. That's how I felt throughout the entire album. It's an interesting and fun take on blues rock in the '80s domain. The singles are great, but it has a considerable amount of fillers. Synthesizers and drum machines are so good at turning music into noise that the entire second half became boring. Still a fun album, but perhaps just outdated.
This was such a HUGE a record in the MTV 80’s. It’s interesting to go back and listen. There’s such a distinct fuzzy tone with the dance-y beat layered under it there’s no mistaking it for anything else. Also, those vocals are pretty great. Still, is it GREAT? Hmm.
Not so good
This is ZZ Top's 8th album, and it's their most successful one - selling 20 million worldwide and being certified diamond in the US. This was the first ZZ Top album to have a breakout outside the states and achieve worldwide success. The album also sold ten times more than any previous ZZ Top album in the US. The music can be categorized as hard/blues/synth rock, since at the time the band was evolving from blues rock to a more mainstream synth rock and new wave sound. The tempo of the songs on this album was also faster than previous albums. A portion of this album's popularity can be attributed to multiple music videos that were produced and aired on MTV regularly. The changes made by the band for this album paid off, with the album making the band become newly popular with young people, as well as satisfying the older fans. This may just be the best ZZ Top album!
"If I blow my top will you let it go to your head?" Perhaps the only time I've heard a popular song lyric that I'm pretty sure is a euphemism for giving someone a facial. How can you not love that? Seriously though, ZZ Top is pretty cool. Lucinda Williams loves them, so I guess that's good enough for me. I do think they were better before they tried to break through to more of a mass audience though. Great guitar. 3 stars.
This is the ZZ Top album with all the hits... but not as good as Tres Hombres or La Futura.
It's fun for a bit. There's definitely some fun, catchy riffs. I can't imagine not enjoying at least a few songs here just for that alone. The vocals aren't so great. Some songs don't work for me at all. I don't have a heap of praise but it really was a enjoyable listen for the most part.
Pretty average, some good songs
Good album, enjoyed it. Strong guitar riffs, catchy
Beards at the ready! Thrusting power chords evoke visions of American road trips. Decent enough
I didn't expect to like this, but it was actually pretty fun... at first. I don't know if the album just drops off or if it was too much of the same thing, but I got bored by the end.
It’s funny how I sort of think of “Gimme All Your Lovin’” as a Christmas song because of The Santa Clause even though that song makes no sense being in that scene in that movie. This album has cool riffs and fun vibes though.
Enjoyed this album by ZZ Top. Felt like a pretty typical 80s rock album filled with rocking songs to drive to. Album went pretty quick and only a few songs that weren’t too great. Some classics on there though too. 7.2/10
Incredible guitar ruined every time by shouting 😂
3.5
A fine album, nothing I'm going head-over-heels for but an easy listen with some familiar tunes.
Sharp dressed man is always a good song. Tv Dinner was really weird lol. Solid album I liked it plenty of guitar throughout
Good slbum
So, I like ZZ Top, but I don't think they're really that good. I appreciate that it's three guys and they were like, "Hey, let's stick to a shuffle on the drums, eighth notes on the base, a single guitar tone, and write a buncha songs about girls and cars. Oh, also, we'll have cool beards and spin our guitars around." And - to their credit - it worked. They are iconic in the sense that you can play 5 seconds of any of their songs and people will be like, "oh, that's ZZ Top." The part of me that loves this music wants to rate it favorably. The critique in me can't get past the horrible slap-bass on Thug (or the general "okay-ness" of the entire album). Given that I believe ZZ Top has a place on a "top 1001" list, and given my assumption that this is the only one of their albums we'll encounter on the list - 3.
Gimme all your lovin och Sharp Dressed Man är toppenlåtar.
Good
Just good old fashion southern rock'n'roll. This is a perfect album for driving with the windows down.
Good rock and roll
Is ZZ Top peak rock and roll? Anything more quintessentially rock and roll than ZZ Top and Billy Gibbons' whole aesthetic? And is there anything more peak of the peak than "TV Dinners?" They wrote and recorded and, I assume, repeatedly played, a bluesy rocker of a tune about the necessity of a microwaved meal. "TV dinners, I'm feelin' kinda rough TV dinners, this one's kinda tough I like the enchiladas and the teriyaki too I even like the chicken if the sauce is not too blue" Amen, Billy, amen. I've never understood the early 80s so well. Of course, they do follow it up with a rather creepy song about wanting to catcall a pretty girl in a nice car. Again, the 80s... "Gimme All Your Lovin,'" "Legs," and "Sharp Dressed Man" were probably Billy Gibbons' greatest achievements... until his recurring role as Angela's dad on "Bones," at least.
When I first started working, I was on a project with a retirement age gentleman. The main thing I remember about him is that my coworker told me his daughter was the woman in the Legs video. Well what did google pop up when I searched for “ZZ Top legs girl”? A 2013 nostalgic blog post by an 80s music video aficionado where he tracked down the Legs woman and sort of interviewed her. She remembered, “I think the most memorable scene (although some would disagree, preferring the lingerie shot) was being placed by the biker up on the counter and spinning to kick off my boyfriend’s boss. In the process, by accident, just a peek of the crotch of my underwear showed. I was ahead of Sharon Stone. A true slip and never brought to my attention.” https://www.noblemania.com/2013/07/the-girl-in-video-legs-1984-part-1-of-3.html?m=1 The guy tracked down and interviewed a number of lesser known 80s music video stars, like all five women from Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love. The site is a hoot for consumers of 80s MTV. I watched the Legs video for the first time. All I can say is that special effects were poor in 1983, amazingly so. ZZ Top are at their best when the guitars are driving things forcefully with a steady beat from the drummer. Songs like Gimme All Your Lovin’, Sharp Dressed Man, Legs, and Bad Girl. It’s a bit boring otherwise.
7/10
The hits are hits for a reason, all that guitar is goddamn catchy shit and I'm here for it. But the album does become quite monotonous as it goes on. Thank you for giving us "Legs" and knowing how to use them.
2021.11.19
Enjoyable rock for a Monday morning
Fairly standard MOR rockers, some better than others. 'Legs' is a nice change of direction, and I'm fascinated by the fact they stopped thinking about sex for just long enough to write a song about TV dinners.
Guay. 3
notttt really to my tastes - every drum beat the same - all songs seemed to be the same tempo. some nice vocals and guitars though i'll give them that
meh not my type of music but was okay
Hit singles lifting a solid rock album that wears its blues history on its sleeve as a badge of honour. Nostalgia and knowing wink glosses over the sexism. A step into the mainstream for a jobbing rock band.
Nokkrir bangerar. Fín plata!
Another prominent star in the constellation of my pop adolescence. Friday Night Videos standards for many months. Clearly guitar is the star here, and it doesn’t get much better for this style of American heavy rock. The singing shows its weakness whenever the material gets slightly challenging though, and the lyrics at best have a slick but superficial stylishness, at its peak in Sharp Dressed Man.
Decent listen. Several hits that were fun, most of the others were ok but a lot of the same sound.
Good ol' classic rock and roll. Deserves a 3.5 but I can't quite get it to a 4.
I tend to think of zz top as gezers but they seem like they might have been pretty hip back in the 80s. pretty decent classic rock album but likely not one I'll come back to often.
Legs is one of the best rock tracks of all time, Give Me All Your Loving has been used to death in adverts so just makes me think of sofa sales. The rest is nice but it all blends into one for me, it’s very of it’s time and not my cup of tea.
Pretty cheesy but a solid album and fun to listen to 6/10
Boring. 5/10
This album is great blues influenced rock. So catchy and so fun. I love this record. If you don’t smile during TV dinners you may need to talk to a professional.
Straight up rock. Aight
Decent rock album
Lustige Mischung aus schlichtrock und guten Sachen
Noh brilliant nor bad…
ZZ Top was the face of blues for millions following the release of this album. ZZ Top were quite vocal about their blues roots and their influences in legends like Howlin Wolf or any of the Kings. After all, they made huge contributions like the renovation of the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale. This album was a transition period into a much harder sound incorporating synths typical of the 80s. But these songs still follow true to the blues formula, found in most of the songs, especially the guitar solos. Of course the highlights are the three singles. My personal favorite is the lesser known of the three "Legs", probably because of the computerized synths and lighter tone. I liked a lot of songs, especially on the second side, to be weak. Why? Well, I like the variety in funky synths. And the blues sound is there... sometimes. But it sounded too much like other hard rock or synth of the era. It tried too hard to be commercialized, and in the end the songs themselves did not stand out. And I wonder if any of the songs would have stood out if not for the MTV heavy rotation. Overall, it is an enjoyable experience with great radio staples but tried too hard to be something of its time.
Very 80s rock production, sadly not enough ZZ Top blues for a higher score, but a solid album.
I like ZZ Top but this is just basic classic rock. Nothing spectacular
There are some amazing songs on here, but there are also a couple that kind drag on… for me they balance the album between not quite being incredible, but not quite being a bad album either
They were great in their time. Liked their music more then then now.
It all sounds the same but it’s as classic rock as it gets
This is a fun listen. I appreciate the eighties electronic textures. Favourite track is TV Dinners.
I liked the non-hits as much as the hits, but the entire album is knocked down one star by the TV dinner mess of a song.
Sharp Dressed Man is one of those songs I've heard 100 times played by cover bands, but I don't think I ever listened to the actual song until now. Really good stuff, tasteful synth usage on top of the standard rock sound. They sure made the most of the minor pentatonic scale.
Alright, but not fantastic. A few good songs, but unfortunately, the rest are not very interesting.
I def dislike this but it is an unheralded ingredient of mainstream 80s rock for sure
Kind of forgettable
ZZ Top was one of the first bands I saw live (2008 Orange Bowl halftime show) but I had no idea who they were.
its a fine rock album. honestly better than I expected it to be but still nothing crazy to write home about
I went into this album thinking I wasn’t a ZZ Top fan. And I went out realizing that was still true. This album has its moments and its good in its own way. I don’t really enjoy how just about every song is about the objectification of a woman.
barndom ..
Paar Banger drauf. Album ist okay. Mehr Bart wäre wünschenswert
Fast women, faster cars. It was certainly a different era.
Some great tracks, some duds too. There are better ZZ Top albums but always worth dipping into
Great fun
Good album
Nice pick. I liked it just fine.
I Need You Tonight is a great song. Decent album, would listen to again.
So cool
Mostly dull, but 2 very catchy songs. Never really got in tune with ZZ.
3.5/5 I'll have to relisten, although it's kind of interesting!
I'm finding it difficult to form an opinion for this album, I think I liked it but I don't see myself ever listening to it again so...
Simppeli resepti. Homma lähtee kitarariffillä ja sitten rummut ja basso ihan normaalisti. Texasin Kotiteollisuus. Kolme ajatonta hittiä, mutta loput levystä aikalailla täytettä. Tai same old same mutta vähän eri mausteilla.
Great rockin album. Three or four songs that got WAY too much airplay, but the rest of the songs are strong.
Deece. A low 3
All the hits, lots of fun and does what it says on the tin.
Perusrokkia Ameriikasta.
Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. I was flirting with 4 stars, but the second half was less impressive than the first. 7/10
Good fun.
Good fun! Some bangers. Between a 3 and a 4. Gonna go with.... hmmm a 3.
Is “I got the six” about a size queen looking for a gay hookup?
Samey af
Some of this could be brilliant but needs to lose the synthesisers and the ridiculously clean production. Would probably be great without those.
Meh
Very riff heavy songs a fun listen
Too much white noise.
3.6 - Fun, bouncy blues rock with some synth elements to modernize the sound for 1983. Some of their biggest hits are here - "Sharp Dressed Man", "Gimme All Your Lovin'", "Legs." Also some throwaway tracks, notably "TV Dinners", which sounds like it was written by a 9 year old.
This album is very common and easy to listen to. I know that it should be considered a great rock album for 83, but nowadays, the age came and it just an ok album.
This sounds like rock music
Well, nice listening that guitars and the distorsion, but seeing the videos on MTV make a great difference
Grand for the background. Some good riffs.
The first ‘whole’ ZZ Top album I’ve listened to. The hits are SO good. The non hits are SO forgettable. All balances out.
I occassionally think Gimme All Your Lovin' is Huey Lewis. Whoops.
Not the kind of music I'd listen to on a daily basis, or ever, as a matter of fact. I'm just not a fan of blues-rock in general. However, I still think this album is interesting due to its production history, the fact that it was the first ZZ Top album made using synths and drum machines plus guitars and that it was basically just Billy Gibbons and the producer in the studio, while Dusty Hill and Frank Beard did almost nothing.
Fun record. Love their sound, even if a lot of tracks blend together.
While not ZZ Top's best album (personally that honor goes to "Degüello") this album rocketed them to huge commercial success, and was my first album of theirs. it has arguably their biggest hits, and some stinkers, but overall a very good album.
i liked it but nothing extraordinary
Enjoyed. It made me think of the tv show Bones. Would listen again
Something was lost from their older stuff. This is too polished, too... 80s, but in a bad way.
Ganz ok.
Nothing mind-blowing, but a lot better than expected! "Sharp-Dressed Man" and "Legs" are the standouts!
I toe-tapped all the way through this, it's impossible not to. Although ZZ Top basically play different versions of the same song throughout their entire career, it's a very good song to repeat. Incredibly catchy, full of 80s nostalgia, music that puts a smile on your face.
It was fine.
Not a huge ZZ TOP fan, but see how the album makes the list
It's good , but the relentless pounding drum machine is bit much...
It's OK! I'm not really super-duper into the whole 80's rock scene but I gave it a listen.
I want to like it but it's just not enough for a 4 for me. The songs are just a bit too simple for me, both lyrically aswell as musically but they lack the catchiness of for example CCR
Flashy trip through history
Kivasti soivaa rockia noin kokonaisuutena ja pari kovaa lekaa.
only heard like half of it unfortunately but still, not my thing
ZZ Toppia, toimii tietenkin vaikkei mun lemppari olekaan
80s excess drenched in some classic, southern fried blues. The riffs are great, might be a little fat to trim. Some, dare I say, interesting song topic choices (I'm looking at you "TV Dinners"). "Sharp Dressed Man" plays in everyone's head when they put on a suit. Favorite tracks: "Dirty Dog", "Gimme All Your Lovin'"
it was ok i guess.
one note band
2.5 It’s okay. It’s ZZ Top. There’s no question what you’re getting. The hits are good, everything kind of sounds the same.
nah
why is the "hard rock" band mixed like the beastie boys. why is the "hard rock" band mixed like flock of seagulls. why is it (somewhat) tolerable? why am i unable to rate any of these songs? the vocals. anyways. cathy duran duran. 1.7-2.5.
Another also ran radio-friendly album that earns the most respect being played in DIY supermarkets. Novelty beards are just a weak gimmick that can't hide the vacuousness of this group. I mean for pop rock it's ok but one of the best albums of all time, not even close.
ZZ Top is one of those One Song kinda bands. The synths generally suck. I vastly prefer the 70s stuff, but who can say no to Sharp Dressed Man?
This is straight up boomer rock right into the veins. Not all bad, but not for me exactly!
you can’t make me listen to an entire zz top record. you just can’t
Gimme All Your Lovin' Sharp Dressed Man Legs
Guitars, hard, not really my style
Thought I was going to like the song “Legs” until he sang “she had hair down to her fanny”. Now, Sir!!! Theme with this band though - they start off and I’m like oh I could groove to this.. and then they start shitting out their mouths.
Some cool stuff, some meh stuff. Liked Legs a lot
This is schlock rock, but I love their videos and their image
Rating: 4/10 It sure is a ZZ Top album, but now worse. I should probably bump my La Grange scores up a point because the earlier career dirty blues sound is better than this. The first three tracks are generally the best the album has to offer, with Sharp Dressed Man being the highlight with its solid groove. After that though the monotony and lack of diversity further gets to me. The back half is entirely unremarkable. And thankfully I didn't really even take in the lyrics in my listen.
idk i don't love it. my little brother had a phase where he was obsessed with zz top and would play it on the boombox so much so maybe that soured it. great beards though good for them
There's not much to hate here if you like classic rock music. It just kind of plods along and frankly its just a bit boring and dated now.
ZZ Top is again one of these artists that I never deeply looked into. I know the hits and all but I would have not known their albums etc. It is wild that this is their 8th album and the most successful since normally the success comes way earlier. I have not carefully listened to their earlier albums but I think it is safe to say that they stuck to their own sound and eventually that lead to this success that this album had. ZZ Top is kinda like AC/DC, you know what you get!
Just not my vibe
For music that's sounds like it's supposed to be exciting this is boring to me. Some good guitar but I felt myself phasing in and out a little. From the ZZ Top I've heard in the past this felt sanded down and more commercial, I guess cos it's later in their discography. Cool album art tho
Not bad, don't quite dislike it but it's something I wouldn't listen to in a long time. plus my ears are tired of 80s type songs and will be for a long time 2,5/10
I associate ZZ Top with this Spitting Image song We Got Beards: We got beards Beards like beavers We got hair Coming out of our chins We got beards Flowing like rivers We got beards Except for him We got beards We don't use razors We got growth Of the longer sorts We got beards We sure ain't shavers We got beards And we don't mean short So what else Can we say about us Apart from beards Which you know we've got Erm... hey, what about the beards? Hey yeah! We got beards Down to our trousers We got beards That's what we've got ...except for him
Not as good as “Tres Hombres”. Not sure how many ways there are to write dive bar songs but these guys sure are trying to find out
Standard 80's, happy to listen to once, no need to listen to twice.
Don’t really like this, corny corn dad rock. RYM: N Saved a song: N
How the hell do these guys have 11.4 million Spotify listeners? What a joke. This was 45 wasted minutes of generic and unoriginal rock
ughhhhhhhhh fine i guess. the album cover alone broooo so chud
I'm much more of a La Grange ZZ Top person than a Sharp Dressed Man person. This doesn't do a whole lot for me.
Boomer rock that gets progressively worse as you listen. The worst song was the one where the lyrics are complaining a girl won’t let the lead singer fuck her. The second worst was the tv dinner song. I could’ve gone my entire life without hearing this album and nothing would’ve changed.
This album is just too repetitive.
Was expecting less yacht rock
Serviceable dad rock
"Gimme All Your Lovin'" is a really good song. But I view this album as the beginning of the end for a really great band. This was too polished. I never did like "Legs" or "Sharp Dressed Man".
Yeah s'alright. Writing and performance are both pretty middle of the road. Something you'd hear on FM radio (or super crunchy AM) cruising around on a summer evening, not really going anywhere. Sun starts really setting into dusk as soon as I Need You Tonight starts playing. You imagine that you're in a Miami Vice type 80s crime drama life filled with excitement and intrigue instead of some schmuck living in Omaha on their way home again from a beige office, about to have a soggy, silent TV dinner with your partner and avoid thinking about how you're almost 15 years too late for whatever it is you wanted to do with your life. "Coming to bed, honey?" "Yes, dear." Ahem. Uh, it's probably a lot more fun for that specific scenario, otherwise just alright. Inoffensive, at least.
A little average, some fun standouts like sharp dressed man and tv dinner but… basslines on this album made me want to kill myself
Time and a place i guess
ZZ Top will always have my wry heart for "Tres Hombres," the other album on this list. But even with my gratitude goggles on, this album remains mediocre. Yes, it was popular; I wouldn't doubt that it was their highest grossing recording at the time. But lots of shit was popular in 1983, and most of it we can release into the ether. Buh bye, Eliminator.
This was a grave disappointment. Like everyone of my generation I was overly familiar with the hits from this record and thought the whole album would have that fun feeling of stupid 80s trash music. But no. The rest of this record was lazy filler with a nasty misogynist edge. I perused the 1001 reviews and all the 1- and 2-star write-ups were so spot on. The one that stuck with me the most was the person who noted that the author of these songs has the emotional range of a toddler eating sherbert. I'm not totally sure what that means, but it feels right. This album made me feel icky, and like all of us needed a nap.
Too many guitar solos. Too much aggressive. Some good song drowned into a chaotic record I didn't really like.
Lyrics are ass
2 ZZ Top albums in 10 days ... this one's not as good as the other one. The algorithm or vagaries of fate (or whatever) did this album no favors - this would likely be a 3 but for the irritation at seeing this so close to the other one.
More boring than I expected? Disappointed
The gutar work is great, but the lyrics are kinda cringe and definitely Boomer teir. Overall not something I'd choose to listen to again. Extra star for the gutar work as mentioned before.
Jammin bluesy guitar tones but yeeesh the sleaziness of this thing. I get that it’s supposed to be tongue in cheek and all but idk man, you just know the people who are giving this a 5 are beer slingin’ misogynists. As another review said “these dudes are diabolically horny”
I think it does what it wants to do well, but this brand of 80s rock is not for me at all.
Mostly the same thing over and over again -- 4/4 beats, driving synths, slightly bluesy guitar. I'd rather hear the guitar work without the other stuff.
I've always had some cognitive dissonance when it comes to ZZ Top. I hear about how they're one of the greatest rock bands ever, and when I listen to them they sound soulless and generic. This is the first time I've listened to them outside of their radio hits, and it has only solidified my opinion of them. I did not enjoy this.
2 solid hits on it that are enjoyable. The rest of it however, forgettable
very basic rock which isnt bad but it isnt ground breaking either.
Two fun singles and a lot of "teenage boy bedroom" nonsense. Still more enjoyable that that White Stripes album, but I won't be revisiting.
I really don't get the appeal of this kind of rock Fav track: Thug
I don’t love the lead singer’s voice, it’s kind of thin to me, and the songs all started to sound the same. The guitar parts were great tho.
american driving music
There are some classics on here, it's just not my jam for a full albums worth of listening IMO
The singles are okay - but its pretty repetitive lowest common denominator stuff. Very 80's very packaged and very dumb. The low point being TV dinners ... "This one's kinda tough I like the enchiladas And the teriyaki too I even like the chicken If the sauce is not too blue" A low 2.
Poor man's Dire Straits. Without the variety. Or decent lyrics. But with plenty of overhyped '80s 'Merca.
We all know the singles. Just big dumb fun. The rest is like that but worse
didn’t really like it. very basic.
A very horny and monotonous album. The fillers feel like lazy alternate reality versions of the hits. Each track bleeds into the next and I struggled to keep paying attention. Even the singles feel like self-parody at this point. The cars/legs/girls thing hasn't aged well and feels like divorced dad rock you'd hear on touch tunes at Applebees. Genuinely surprised by how little I enjoyed this. The one upside is it sent me back to Tres Hombres, which imo does the greasy blues rock schtick much better without tipping into cartoonishness.
Second half of this album is a complete snoozefest. Big meh all around. Just too corny for me, but I can understand how people enjoy it.
Not great
They sound like they were on autopilot for this one. No more fire in their bellies by this point in their career. I just couldn't get excited about this album.
Zone out a lot....
Nah.
Zzzzzz Top
Is TV Diners a parody of Weird Al Yankovich doing a parody of ZZ Top? I was looking forward to this album until I got to legs and then there was a sharp drop in IQ and the rest is laughable. I’d give it a 1 if the singles weren’t so good.
Z TOP!! Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z z zz z z z z z z z z z z z z 𐰁z z 𐰁 .ᐟzz𐰁 Z 💤 Z 💤 Z 💤 Z 💤 Z 💤 Z 💤 Z 💤 In case Mr. Admin is reading, no one would notice if tomorrow this album wasn't on the site anymore... just sayin...
Its OK they are talented but not for me
I generally don't like ZZ Top. This isn't really much of an exception. It was a little better than expected, but my expectations were low. I wouldn't choose to listen to this, but I wouldn't tell my friend to turn it off if he played it. 2.49/5
I’ve always hated this band’s aesthetic. For me, ZZ Top’s music has always occupied a very boring place in rock history. ⭐️ ⭐️
this music makes me want to do coke and beat my wife who I HATE!!!! 10/10!!!!!! I love AMERICA!!!
Rock for the sake of rock idk. Not super unique or atleast brigs nothing new to the genre as I see it. If you want rock then this is what you want, but it doesnt bring much more than that.
Outside of the fantastic singles, this album is straight up forgettable. The synthetic drums and bass don’t do this album any favors, the tunes sound robotic as hell, and the songwriting is corny AND horny to the point of being a bit unbearable. “TV Dinners” and “I got the six” are prime examples of this. The singles are great, they have a punch and memorable hooks, and the album sounds nice with the windows down speeding on a freeway, but all in all this is only about as good as background music can be.
Meh, this was kinda disappointing. Couple of tracks that are still fun listens, but absolutely no variety. The rest of the album just sounded like fillers.
This album felt looong. I was checking to see how much was left and I was barely halfway through the record. Not a good sign. It’s just pretty generic and for the first half I didn’t really mind it, but after that it became a bit annoying.
It's ZZ Top, but not how I like them
This is an album that I feel has not aged super well. There are some undeniable great tracks here. Sharp Dressed Man is a great single. But I feel this childish, cheesy nature when hearing some of these lyrics. In the heavy blues rock genre I have heard much better.
Fun, no sticking power
