i think ive never heard such an 80s album, this is the epitome of the 80s. I enjoyed this album but lo mio isnt rock, so i cant say that ill 100 listen to it again. Maybe in an ocassion where i HAVE TO LISTEN TO ROCK this is the album i would chose.
I don’t get ZZ Top. I have a hard time understanding the lyrics. Not their meaning, but what words they’re actually singing. Maybe the beard hairs garble them. No matter the reason, from what I can parse, I don’t think I’m missing much. “I want to have sex with pretty girls” seems to be the general sentiment. Fair enough. The 1980’s were weird. There was the futuristic shiny shirt, spiky hair, eye liner, synthesizer 1980’s. But there was also the backwards looking, line-dancing, western shirts, “Young Guns”, Reaganite, synthesizer 1980’s (everyone, no matter their affiliation, had synthesizers; they just issued them to all of us one morning in 1982 and we never questioned it). It’s like the difference between “Back to the Future”s II and III. I guess ZZ Top was part of that second 1980’s. But I still don’t really get it. I see the word “boogie” associated with ZZ Top (and Skynrd for that matter) a lot and have never really understood what that term means. Like danceable in a bar band kind of way? I’ve heard yacht rock described as acoustic seventies soft rock made by people who appear to be aware of the existence of black people. Maybe people use the term “boogie” to describe Southern blues rock made by people who appear to be aware of the existence of black people. I don’t know. This album isn’t bad. I can kind of bob my head to most of the songs. It doesn’t bother me. But I also never go, “you know what I feel like listening to? ZZ Top.” I reckon “Eliminator” is worth hearing before you die. Boogie on bearded Texan weirdos.

This is the first of two ZZTop albums where the band, like so many others at the time, let themselves get coaxed into using the technology de jour - drum machines and synthesizers. The result is ... surprisingly good, if a little poppy, even if you loved them for their older material. Billy Gibbon's guitar is still front and center (metaphorically speaking), and with or without the new technology, the songs groove like there is no tomorrow. It helps that this album contains some of ZZTop's greatest his: Gimme All Your Lovin', Sharp Dressed Man and Legs all were in MTV's heavy rotation for a reason. So, while I slightly prefer the other album from that era of the band - Afterburner - this is really an important classic that deserves all the accolades it received. 4/5

Boogie blues rock with a driving beat. Apparently the album, with its synth and drum machines, saved the band from obscurity in the age of MTV (even though Gibson replaced most of Beard’s drums and Hill’s bass with their electronic equivalents). A pretty forgettable album for me outside of the historic context, but I couldn’t help dancing around the kitchen while it was on. A soft 3.
I am familiar with ZZ Top, but I have not listened to their music in a while so I am excited for this. Track 1 is very groovy. Historically, "Blue Jean Blues" has been my favorite song of theirs so I am hoping for that to change. The first track is good, but nothing incredible to me. I feel like the first track of an album is almost never the best one. However, this one is impressive and gives me hope for the rest of the album. Track 2 is not that great in my opinion, I feel like so far for this album the guitar riffs have been technically difficult but are lacking in musicality or authenticity. It feels a little bland and somewhat robotic. I wish it was more bluesy. Everyone knows track 3, if not by name then definitely by the main guitar riff. I do like this song, it is quite catchy and more musical than the first two. I am liking track 4 a lot. The musicality in the album seems to grow the further I progress which is nice. The main riff in track 5 sounds a lot like track 3. Honestly, the base of the songs all sound the same. Funny enough, track 6 is individually recognizable with less guitar riffs and longer, more melodic singing. I still do not entirely love it though. Honestly, I am not that impressed with this album. I have two tracks left and am a little disappointed with how similar a lot of the songs sound.

A friend of mine went to see Aerosmith a few years ago. At some point, he realized that most of the people were there for the "new" stuff - ie, early 80s on. He was deeply disappointed. This is ZZ Top's "new" stuff - vastly inferior to their initial iteration but wildly popular. I was inclined to give this a 3 but then I heard (and then read) the lyrics to I've got my 6. While I recognize that performative male sexual desire and rock lyrics are deeply intertwined, those lyrics stand out as extraordinarily stupid.
Some great grooves. Some filler. Harmonies are for real. 3.5
Did I have this album in highschool? Sadly, yes. Did I listen to anything on it but Sharp Dressed Man? No. All their songs pretty much sound the same.

Hell yeah. All time great rock album, dripping with double (and sometimes single) entendre, it's riff-rock at its absolute finest. It's hard not to feel a certain something when this one is spinning, and if that's a fist forming in your hand, feel free to pump it.

I’ve never really spent time listening to ZZ Top, always writing them off as “dad rock” and the kind of heavy rock that should probably have stayed in the 1980s. With that preconception firmly in place, I went into Eliminator curious to see whether I’d been unfair. The big hits are undeniably strong. Sharp Dressed Man, Legs, and Gimme All Your Lovin’ are excellent pop-rock singles: slick, hooky, and perfectly engineered for MTV-era success. They’re fun, instantly recognisable, and still work well in isolation. Beyond those highlights, though, the album quickly loses momentum. The slower tracks feel flat and uninspired, and much of the remaining material blends into a fairly forgettable stretch of generic 80s rock. There’s little here that compels a full-album revisit. Lyrically, too, parts of Eliminator feel dated, with some moments tipping into tired and mildly misogynistic clichés that haven’t aged especially well. Overall, Eliminator is a record defined by its singles: a handful of brilliant tracks surrounded by a lot of filler. Beards, blues, and black suits. Every song on Eliminator immediately makes me think of 1980s MTV. Glossy neon graphics, bad effects, dramatic lighting, wind machines, sunglasses at night, smoke machines. The songs are cheesy as hell and mostly nonsense. But somehow, they're still likeable. I don't think anyone really takes ZZ Top too seriously. They're great musicians, but there’s a self-awareness to all of this. In my head, they sit in the same space as The Darkness: over-the-top nonsense, but enjoyable nonsense all the same.
I'm not really a zz top man. It's catchy and all that, but i feel like it's music with all the edges smoothed off. Give me all your lovin and sharp dressed man are classics, but not good enough by themselves to lift the rest of the album which sounds very same-y

First full album listen of a ZZ top record. I knew the singles - all big dumb catchy numbers that were stuck in my head all day. The rest was pedestrian. The same chugging guitar and zero tempo changes in the drums. Big beards and dumb lyrics can only take you so far. 3/5

Can someone please explain to me why I like this so much. On the surface I should hate everything about this, it's just cheesy and somewhat generic dad rock. But for some reason it doesn't repulse me at all, there's still something so fun and enjoyable about it.

The synths and drum machines really give this album a phony sheen that is not at all enjoyable.

ZZ Top is fine, not a huge fan but I do look forward to listening to one of their albums. Normally this isn't the type of music I like but for some reason I am digging this album, fun rock and roll. Not my favorite but there are definitely some good songs on here. Can easily see why they were so big in the 80's.

Album review 027 Eliminator by ZZ Top (1983) Rating 1.5/5 Whilst I wasn’t expecting Eliminator to be an album I’d particularly enjoy, I had no idea it would be so bad. It’s the same song played 10 times over about how women only exist for ZZ Top to “do love to” (yes, that is a lyric), and one song about tv dinners - which is presumably a metaphor for ZZ Top doing love to women. If Eliminator was a person, he’d be on a register, wouldn’t be allowed to see his kids, and probably not allowed within 500 metres of his ex-wives or schools. This is music for the middle-aged lech, day drinking on his own in a Hard Rock Cafe and hitting on girls half his age. Awful paint-by-numbers MTV rock.

For a ZZ Top album it's actually not too bad. I like the first 4 songs, really starts with some fun bops, good energy and catchy riffs. It's not super consistent, the 2nd half is mostly some fairly average hard rock. It's better than other things I've heard from ZZ top at least.

Some smoking guitars, and some solidly good songs, but ultimately a lot of same same. Although sharp dressed man is a classic
I tend to regard ZZ Top as the US Status Quo and I've walked out of two Status Quo gigs because I was bored. Perhaps slightly unfair as the guitar work is better with ZZ Top but even so... There are three tracks on here that I recognize from radio play back when the album came out. That's not enough to sustain an interesting album but enough to give it a grudging 3/5.

How can an album be totally awesome and suck so much at the same time?
Nostalgic sound I remember as a kid but this kind of Americana rock doesn’t quite do much for me. Blues rock revival of the 60s I like better or the garage rock/blues infused of the 00s. Those synths really wanted more attention on Side 2 of the album. Everyone sounded great. Won’t lie that most of these songs sound the same to me. Caught myself zoning out a lot. The sexism though….
If this doesn't make you wanna hop on a motorcycle and drive off into the sunset than nothing will. Favorite track: Sharp Dressed Man 3.5/5

very generic sounding. i’d say it sounds like any other rock music released in the 80s, but that would be an insult to other bands. i see what they’re trying to do, combining elements synthesizers and drum machines with traditional rock but somehow it still doesn’t work for me, it doesn’t even sound insteresting or innovative. not seeing myself reaching for this album anytime soon.

A few well known bangers that raise a smile, but the joy kinda ends there. 7 out of 11 songs having a fade out probably tells us how much focus there was on actual songwriting... but oh boy, they sure had time for pentatonic scale jamming..

Great piece of blues rock. Something was making me think these songs sounded "commercial," as in they belonged as backing to an advertisement or a movie... I think I may have tracked this feeling back to the usage of "Gimme All Your Lovin'" in the third act of Tim Allen's The Santa Clause. "Sharp Dressed Man" was also the theme to a big TV show. Also - I only just now discovered that the unauthorized ZZ Top cameo in the bar in Sierra On-Line's Space Quest I (1986) includes a rough MIDI version of "Well Dressed Man."
Eliminator is one of those albums that just feels built for motion. The guitars growl, the synths hum with that unmistakable 80s sheen, and every groove lands with the confidence of a band who know exactly what they are doing. ZZ Top managed to modernise their sound without losing the swagger that made them who they were in the first place, and the result is a record that still feels infectious decades later. It is slick, but never sterile, and the combination of blues grit and electronic polish works far better than it has any right to. The big singles are unavoidable but still a blast. “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” and “Legs” are stamped into pop culture for a reason. The hooks are massive, the riffs stick instantly, and the whole thing has this almost cartoonish cool that makes it impossible not to enjoy. Deeper cuts keep the engine running too, with that steady drum-machine pulse and Billy Gibbons’ guitar tone gliding right over the top. It is an album that knows exactly how to make you nod along before you even realise you are doing it. If there is a criticism, it is only that the production style is so locked into the era that the album can feel almost too polished in places. That raw bar-band looseness from earlier ZZ Top records gets traded for tight sequencing and radio-ready gloss. But honestly, it works. Eliminator has a charm all its own, and the band lean into the aesthetic with so much commitment that it becomes hard not to be swept up in it. It is fun, confident, and endlessly replayable, and that is exactly what this era of ZZ Top was all about.
TV Dinners took this down a star.
Quite a few songs with steady radio play growing up. Never really understood this band all the songs really seem to blend together. La Grange is my favorite ZZ Top song and unfortunately not on this album.

Pure rock candy
Album’s instrumental backbone is consistent and the hi-hats remind me of an album made with just extended “Legs” tracks. But that’s a good thing. I almost lost it listening to “I got your six” for the first time. Can’t believe I haven’t heard that before. What the hell! Solid 4 on the album.

Not sure why this needs to be hear. Presumably something about beards. It's solid, no nonsense rock music. No real peaks, no real variance in its sound or sentiment, but sometimes that isn't important. A couple of notable singles, some good guitar, vocals on the dodgy side, possibly because all that hair keeps getting in the mouth.

Great fun with three smash hit classic pop songs and some great guitar throughout. Who would have thought this at the time of tres Hombres.
She's got legs AND she knows how to use them... for walking and running... hopping even. Magic pimps Gandalf and Saruman and their little moustachioed hobbit friend outstay their welcome a bit on this.
I can definitely vouch for its inclusion on this list. It's the quintessential ZZ Top album, and is certainly a certified classic of classic rock. The big 3 hits that everyone with a working car stereo has heard - "Gimme All Your Lovin'", "Sharp Dressed Man", and "Legs" - are great. Even if you don't like classic rock, "Sharp Dressed Man" is a banger and you're wrong if you think it isn't. That's about where this album ends, though. If you've heard those 3, there's no real reason to listen to the full album. The rest of it is just meh-sounding generic ZZ Top.
Hell yeah! I listened to ZZ Top a little bit too late in life. I used to listen to La Grange, love it, and that's it. But then I heard for the first time the first chords from Sharp Dressed Man, playing on the radio some ramdom day, and boy... that 80's atmosphere hitting you like a ton of lead it's something mind blowing. And then I listened to Gimme All Your Lovin on the GTA V radio station (proovin once more that GTA franchising mold the most of my music taste) and then I was the one giving all of my love to this band. I love all of the albuns, 5 stars to any of them.

I knew the first three songs and legs. The guitar is very simple but has really good feel it fits perfectly with the music.

In the 70s, ZZ Top was like your favourite dive bar. Their sound reminded me of beer stained tables and the smell of smoke. Not healthy but comfortable. In the 80s it’s like they got someone to come in and renovate the place. New finish on all of the furniture. The beer stains are still visible but they’re under the new finish. I was surprised that there are still a few great riffs on here. Legs for example. But they don’t land as hard because of that 80s rhythm production that forces everything into strict alignment. No longer my favourite dive bar. If I wanted fancy, I wouldn’t go here.

All the lyrical depth of a 14 year old who just found their dad's Playboy stash. They guitar parts have a strong command of the blues, but that's about the only thing propping this album up. The production succumbs to all the worst trends of the early-to-mid '80s.

I thought I'd never heard a ZZ Top album before, then I saw on my RYM that I listed to Tres Hombres three months ago and it failed to leave any kind of impression on me. Considering that I had more fun than I expected with this. The move away from blues to a campy form of hard rock made things more enjoyable. Though by the time I got to TV Dinners I did start to lose the will to live, in no small part because of the absolutely dreadful lyrics.
Put simply, this ZZ Top album is not for me. I find it plodding and uninspiring. I feel like in order to vibe with this you have to think it’s very COOL, and I don’t think it’s cool whatsoever. Sorry ZZ Top, great beards tho

I listened to this while in the gym. It was fun, the synth-meets electric/blues licks was quite a lot of fun . The lyrics are a bit bogus, but I feel like ZZtop had other things on their mind. I don't think I quite appreciate Gibbons' guitar playing enough. He plays really well. Tv dinners is a bit crap, and the album is a tad ironic. But it's still a decent find! Not my favourite ZZtop album.. 5 stars though.. just.
This album is like being stuck behind a logging truck on the open road, and finally getting a clear stretch of road to overtake it. Now that you’re past the truck, it’s time to floor it and make up for lost time.
A great rock amd roll album. Sometimes doing something simple to a high standard is all that is needed. Bar that TV dinner album, all songs were enjoyable, flowed, and did the job. A great album to just relax to, or drink to, do almost any task to. Plus, she's got legs, a classic

ZZ Top to me is a multiple hit wonders. So I've never listened to an album of theirs but have heard their top hits, like Gimme all your loving and Sharp Dressed Man which are on this album, so familiar territory. Overall, a solid rock album, nothing too crazy but not bad. Has catchy songs. Good album. 6/10
ZZ Top has some solid hits, and a good chunk of them came from this album. The first half of the album is great, but the second brings it down a bit. However, "I Need You Tonight" is my favorite ZZ Top song, and it's a great driving song, so that kinda brings it up.

Every song is the same but half of them have a fun synth. There’s only 2 or 3 songs I’d lose off this thing, and I’d maybe cut a minute of fade out out of the others, but honestly had a blast listening to this.
This is a great album, with a ton of hits. Even the album tracks are really good. The only thing holding this album back from being really stellar is the fact that it’s from ZZTops 80’s synth era. I would much prefer the more stripped down sound they had in the 70’s, but these are still great songs.

Banger of an album. Pretty sure I've heard this album before, but good to get into it again, since pretty much all ZZ Top's hits are on this one. A little front loaded, since all the big songs are in the first half, but the second half songs certainly aren't filler. Great stuff.
Sure, all the songs kinda sound the same, but I have a soft spot for them since they were in Back To The Future III.

The good songs are great but the bad ones are terrible.
Sharp Dressed Man will always make me think of Poppa White. I liked the album more than I expected, so that plus nostalgia = a 4.
Wanted to like this more. Three legit hits, but a lot of this sounded the same. I know they’re a blues/boogie band so that’s to be expected, and Chuck Berry got away with that for most of his career, but this isn’t quite in the same class as Chuck. Kudos to them for perhaps being the group with the longest span of original members and no one else — 50 years from 1971-2021 when bassist Dusty Hill died. Weird trivia. Billy Gibbons played himself, as the dad of one of the main lab techs, on five episodes of the TV series “Bones”. When she revealed who he was, she was nonchalant about it, but her co-workers were astounded.
Expected this to be a 2. After listening it’s a 3. That’s about all I have to say about ZZ Top. Oh wait. Sometimes you encounter a song where the disparity between the strength of the music and the godawful lyrics is so vast that it feels like the song is begging to be sampled and put to better use by some superior artist. “TV Dinners” is such a song. The website “who sampled” has no records of it being sampled, other than one cover version. A shame.

Well. I could never have imagined I would find myself on a rainy Monday morning in 2025, listening to an album by ZZ Top on the premise it's essential I do so before anything terrible happens to me. The plodding, sludgy music aside, the lyrics are mostly horrendous and really do not belong on the 21st century. They're of their time, and fair enough, I just don't think they need to be trumpeted today. I honestly believe you could live a long and happy life without ever encountering this record. It should probably be returned to the 80s and buried in concrete.
Before I started listening to this I thought - this will be fun. Gimme All Your Lovin was a lot, well, worse then I remembered. The beards are probably the most exciting thing about ZZ Top. They're exciting beards, as beards go, but that isn't enough for a good album, never mind a great one.
Damn this is SOOO 80s. It’s not bad music, great for background music and has a few bangers such as sharp dressed man. The voice is “cool” and the guitar has a nice tone. Unfortunately this album suffers from a bit of repetition. Not really an album that stands out.

I can get into some ZZ Top . . . for about three minutes. The remaining 41 minutes, which are essentially the same as the first three, are quite tedious. Still, I'm glad this exists. It's good for movie soundtracks and funny videos on the internets.
Wow. My memories of this album are deeply negative. Georgia rednecks loved it; I hated it. In 1983 it sounded cheesy and lame and it lacked any of the fire and anger that motivated me at the time. 42 years later? Well, it's still pretty cheesy, but I like it a lot more. The guitars sound dirty, maybe a little lecherous to match the lyrics (except for that fucking TV dinner song, WTF?), and it grooves in a way that an older, mellower me appreciates. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could, and I don't really want to give it a 4, so a 3 it is.
I’m not a Texas Blues fan, and certainly not this commercialized, antiseptic version of it. The last song with different production could be a Motörhead song, but that’s not enough to get this album out of the basement.
Before this album, I would have said "yeah, ZZ Top is okay, I like a few of their songs." I mean, La Grange and Jesus Just Left Chicago aren't particularly original, but they're great songs. This album changed everything. Its mix of synthetic dance-club drum tracks and weird Richard Marx-esque vocals and general pop aspirations was awful, but also was monstrously successful, meaning that I heard it (and saw the terrible videos) constantly. On top of everything else, I think they are the worst lyricists in pop music: "She might get out a nightstick, and beat me real real bad...by the roadside." "Gimme all your lovin'...all your hugs and kisses too." "I'm needing someone like you, that I just wanna do love to." TV Dinners almost seems profound among this dreck. They should have gone back to being fake Zombies.
1/5 - I thought this music and their videos were cool when I was 9. I grew out of that by the time I was 11. Eliminator is the definition of lame. TV Dinners is the worst song I’ve heard on this list, and that’s an accomplishment.

ZZ is one of those bands you always hear about and they seem to have a loyal following but I really don't get it. Overall the album is non-offensive and definitely something you can listen to, but none of it grabbed me or moved me in anyway.
Interesting album, especially when reading about some of the lore and background behind the album that does change my perception of it a bit. Most people know Gimme All Your Lovin, Sharp Dressed Man and Legs, which are all great, but I enjoyed Thug and a couple of the other more musical tracks as well. Did ZZ Top sell out? On one hand, this was their 8th album. You can't blame a band for wanting to mix it up and evolve at some point. On the other hand, part of the transition didn't feel authentic. They couldn't even play their songs live without assistance, not to mention the calculated decision to create songs around 124BPM since analytics showed this BPM to be more popular, and then the music videos on MTV to cater to a younger audience. I liked the album overall but the background of it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I'm fine with artists wanting to evolve and grow their music if it's authentic. This doesn't seem to be authentic to me. From deliberately choosing a BPM because it was shown to be more popular, taking away writing credits, incapable of even playing your own songs without a tape track playing I mean come on. This was a business decision to make more money. The singles were great, but the bad songs were just......really bad. Not a fan of TV Dinners or Bad Girl. TV Dinners is just lame. I mean, you couldn't come up with something better? But no wonder it sucks, it's 100 BPM! Bad Girl feels just as lame and uninspired. Just bad song writing.

There are a lot of things I like about ZZ Top, and I left with a fairly positive impression of the album, but I couldn't listen to a lot of it at once - the aggressive lack of substance is a little tiring, I guess.
ZZ Top is a fun time! This is the best version of a road band playing in a dive bar. There's not a lot of substance, but there is a lot of rhythm guitar and the songs are breezy and toe tapping. Now, a full album of ZZ Top is a lot, maybe too much, but I didn't mind listening to it for sure! The cover is great! Love the style and the graphic design on the logo and titles, it's a 4/5.

The singles of this album introduced me to ZZ Top in the first place but listening now, you can hear how over-produced it is. Frankly, I prefer their older stuff these days.

Dive bar vibes, throwback
I really dont think my life has been enhanced by listening to this, and bearing in mind that I have been awarding 2 stars to albums that have at least held my interest for at least a few songs, this album gets the award for the first one to get a single star. I liked Gimme All Your Lovin', it reminded me of parties in my teens. But the rest of the songs were either uninteresting or just poor, the guitar playing was bland and the lyrics were laughable (apparently, she has legs right down to her fanny!!) A waste of my time.
Seems quite odd that it took damn near 90 albums to get to actual U.S. Blues. No, Jack White's neo garage blues don't count. Good old fashion Texas style blues. Not the Stones, or the Who's or Clapton's blues. Authentic American Blues. This is how its done though homogenized by the mainstream. Still the blues. Gotta love ZZ Top. The only reason why I've seen Kid Rock is to see these bearded badasses.
ZZ Top are the undisputed kings of the Texas boogie rock thing for sure. But this album finds them crossing that classic rock sound with the electronic dance sounds of the early 80s. Obviously it was a rousing success for them and their fuzzy guitars and flashy '33 Ford Coupe are iconic images from my childhood. So while it's not the ZZ I'd dig out of it were hankering for a listen, it's certainly a decent enough record chock full of catchy 80s hits and nostalgia. 3.5/5

It had the car. it had the girls. it HAD the hits. Most of all, it had songs. And they were catchy and ready for primetime. MTV's infancy made this happen. and it happened. GREAT album. Listen to it again for the first time. It's worth it.
Pretty much the ultimate classic rock album. Car on the cover, loud, filled with solo's and covering important topics such as women and being cool. I think ZZ Top works better as a singles artist though. THey have a few great songs but their albums can be kind of middling. I didn't really dislike any part of it, but it isn't that adventurous or boundary pushing. It doesn't really try to though, can't fault an album for what it isn't trying to be.
I really wouldn't have imagined that a Southern boogie rock band being influenced by Depeche Mode would be very good but I don't hate this album. There's something charming about this era of ZZ Top. They seem like they're trying to be edgy while singing about "your hugging and your kissing" and wearing suits, but it's sort of endearing and fun at the same time. This really feels like a guilty pleasure.

Et la même année Metallica sortait 'Kill Em All', un album qui a vraiment révolutionné le metal ... Il y avait donc bien mieux à écouter en 83/84 !!! Donc pas de seconde écoute pour moi. =>2/5

This was released when I was 9 and I loved it. I knew nothing of what they had done previously at that age. In context, it's tough not to see this as Top's attempt to cash in on the '80s. The processed guitar tone and heavy reliance on a sequencer just cheapen what this band used to be. I'm glad they got some big hits out of it, and it has a lot of nostalgic value for me, but it pales compared to their previous material.

Eliminator is who I thought ZZ Top was growing up. Catchy, over produced, constantly groovy, and resoundingly 80's. I didn't know they came from somewhere grimier and less slick. Is this version of ZZ a product of the times, or did they help shape it? I'm not sure. The early 80's release date makes me feel like they closer to the bleeding edge than chasing a fad...or maybe they were just timely. It is admirable how they were able be current but also be boogie woogie...making it pretty damn original. That said, it's strengths is also its weakness for me. A little too polished, a little too clean, a little too restrained. I'm chronically allergic to music that sounds 80's for reasons I'm still trying to understand. That said, thinking too hard about this album really misses the point. 3/5 tv dinners

A true Classic! I’ve been listening to this album my whole life. To me this is an UNTOUCHABLE body of work! Grooves for days, strong vocals, piercing guitar riffs, beautiful writing, an all around gem.
I remember riding around in my dad's 1994 Cutlass Ciera listening to this cassette. Despite losing some edge while dipping its toe into the MTV synth swimming pool of 1983, this album is still a classic. Billy Effing Gibbons.

This was such a huge hit when it came out, and the hit songs on here are pretty fun - not worth thinking about too hard, definitely not worth paying attention to the lyrics too closely, but fun pop rock hits. But for me time was not kind to this album. The vapidity of the hits is made tolerable by their catchiness and fun factor. The vapidity of the rest of the album...not so tolerable. A lot of the songs felt like filler - some of them sounded like rough drafts of the hits. And I don't really know what happened to them musically. Boring guitar solos. Uninspired melodies. And Frank Beard sounds like a beginning drummer. I know he is capable of much more...but apparently he was just their drum machine on this album. I didn't come into this expected to be so disappointed - I thought it would be a fun and nostalgic ride. And I suppose it was for 3 songs. But as an album experience, this is a dud.

Qué bien balanceadas voces y guitarras. Entiendo que tiene mucho que ver con que casi todo el disco está remasterizado en 2008 pero igual suena muy bien. Además, ha estado divertido escucharlo, aunque a veces los ritmos e ideas me han parecido repetitivos pero eso es más un problema mío con el género, me pasa incluso con Dire Straits según el día así que... También me escamaron algunas letras y toda la controversia de que un señor no fue acreditado por su trabajo, aunque siendo rock eso les da más aura (?). Me gustaron: Got Me Under Pressure, Dirty Dog
ZZ Top? More like ZZZ Top (es broma lol tenía que hacerlo) La verdad que este álbum es una fórmula mecánica repetida de forma incansable durante 45 min. Y me encantan las guitarritas eh, el blues rock me suele calar bastante, pero no cuando todas las canciones suenan exactamente iguales entre sí. Salieron ya muchos álbumes con tracklists muy homogéneos pero creo que este se lleva la palma. Aún así el sonido es muy representativo de la época así que supongo que no es un mal álbum. Just not my jam. Favs: la primera, Gimme All Your Lovin', porque el resto son todas réplicas pero con otro nombre (?)

The whole time I was listening I had the image in my head of two bearded men chasing after a woman in the style of Benny Hill. Couple of the singles are catchy but the rest of the album is far less interesting hard rock/blues slop. Some of these songs go on too long. Whilst there is fun (of a kind) to be had, I struggle to understand how this made its way on to a list of the 'best' albums. 2/5
ZZ Top is one of those bands I've always been aware of and I've heard some of their hits, but I've never thought about how iconic, different and impactful they were before. Straightforward, great grooves.
Immediately started with "Who are these guys? Oh, I know this song." And it was the best song on the album. I feel like this music was designed for people who would still drive the car on the album cover in the modern day. I drive very comfortably in my Kia, so I didn't really get much out of this one. Most of it feels pretty uncomfortable. The lyrics paired with the instrumentals feel like the kind of music you'd vaguely listen to for the feel of it and then tune into the lyrics and awkwardly turn down your radio. Sadly, I can't really uncomfortably turn down the music because the 1001 Album Gods gave me this and I must listen.

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but someone gave Frank Beard a drum machine and threw together a synth chain for Billy and Dusty and made a whole new sound. Yes it’s aged a lot and yes the album is a bit thin outside of its massive hits. But this is still a really amazing reimagining for the Lil’ Old Band from Texas, losing absolutely none of their edge.

I find myself getting fatigued of this about 3 songs in. It's not awful I just wish it was an EP. Cut off like the last minute of Sharp Dressed Man, oh my god. I Need You Tonight is AWFUL. Just lotsa noodling around, boring!!! 2.5/5
