Reviews (page 8 of 11)
Inspired a lot of mediocre bands to try and copy them. 3.3/5
Some good, solid hard rock. Nothing more, nothing less.
3.1/5 a few bangers. listened 2x
Another unspectacular album.
Not what I'd normally listen to but I got into it at the gym
Although metal is not in my usual cup of tea, I can say without question that this album certainly belongs on this list as a "must listen". Judas Priest is METAL; shocasing hard, but well controlled voices and absolutely stellar guitars. This album, as I suspect theirs typically do, plays very LOUD...I think both figuratively and literally. It's a well rounded album though, with a good mix of heavy that also includes softer anthems. A solid 101 lesson in 80s metal!
It's okay but you can tell a homosexual made it. Like how was anyone surprised that Halford was gay, he literally was dressed in all leather. I might have to give it another listen.
This album feels like the definition of old school metal. Not to listen to every day but once in a while it’s pretty good. I enjoyed it.
Really surprised by this. I'd never bothered listening to them before as I had them down as yet another heavy metal band and if you've grown up on Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and even Black Sabbath there's no point in listening to any others. I could probably jump up and down to this (even tho I'm 64). Love the fact they are British and the production is not too bad.
Straight up classic. I actually haven't listened to this much but it's good. I think I still like Screaming for Vengence better but this is a close second. Red, White, and Blue is pretty cringy.
Not my fave metal band but this is a solid album
Judas H. Priest. Breaking the law en United
Awesome album, but also a little corny
Not crazy about most of this album, it mostly has a vibe of pretty straightforward sounds. But I enjoyed jamming out to The Rage.
Never really into Judas Priest....and still am not. Respect them, just doesn't do it for me.
Not bad for heavy metal of the era
rocky
This is the type of music that comes to mind when I think of "Rock". All of these songs are decent, but none of them are particularly memorable aside from Breaking The Law. The Old to be Wise song is pretty good too. I think it's funny how the album started out talking about breaking the law and then ends with patriotic praise of the thing that makes the law.
Red, White & Blue is hilarisch. FAVO: Breaking the law
Tru heavy Metal. Slightly monotonous but good heavy riffs
Heavy metal is not really my thing but this was actually more enjoyable that what I thought it would be.
Classic Metal. Good listen.
Maybe I've heard one or two tracks all the way through by Judas Priest, but I've seen a lot of T-shirts with the band’s name on it. I've heard at least portions of "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight" from this album. There is a certain amount of play acting that seems to come with heavy metal that keeps me from investing much in this genre of music. Not that old school heavy metal shouldn't resonate with me, but it just doesn't. A few tracks felt a little bit like a caricature of hard rock - two steps away from Spinal Tap. Other tracks seemed like you could ask AI to put together some heavy metal, and the combination of vocals, drums and guitars comes out as Judas Priest. For my first real listen to Judas Priest, British Steel was a good experience. I enjoyed the run of tracks from "United", "Living After Midnight", to "You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise" (and "Breaking the Law") was okay too. One of the things that made me enjoy this album more than I thought I would is that several tracks on British Steel reminded me of Rata Blanca's Magos, Espadas y Rosas (1990). I am sure that Rata Blanca were inspired by Judas Priest and other bands contemporary with Judas Priest. But my true introduction to this subset of heavy metal was through a good friend who introduced Rata Blanca to me in the early 90s. I felt a little nostalgia listening to British Steel. I don’t think I could listen to the album again as a whole, but I could listen to a track or two again here and there.
Fed tråd igen i dag, hvad har vi dog gjorn at vi skal ha det så godt
Pretty dope, especially for 84. 3.2
Another fun listen. Wouldn’t go back and listen to it again, though.
\m/
I always forget what genre Judas Priest are and am surprised when it is rock. Not unpleasant but not the music for my soul.
This felt close to something I'd really enjoy but was missing something.
Un versant pop du métal, aux refrains accrocheurs et guitares effilées
Sehr klassischer Hard Rock. Live wahrscheinlich noch besser
Pretty fun album, has a more mellow feeling compared to other metal stuff from the 80s. Cool guitar parts throughout. Nothing really stuck out to me though, a lot of it felt uninteresting. some of it just blended together for me. No truly great songs or bad songs tbh, pretty even in quality throughout favorite was probably the rage, loved the guitar 3.5/10
I quite like this, but it's not one I'll revisit. Breaking the Law is a real head-banging tune.
Enjoyed it
Bit of heavy metal. Feels very old compared to some other metal albums, but I guess it is pretty old. Like it a lot though. Love the album cover.
There are obviously some metal (NWOBHM) classics such as “Metal Gods” and “Breaking the Law” on here, but so much of the rest of the album is just middling butt-rock. If you’re only going to have one Priest album in the book, that album should be Painkiller.
I can see why people like it it’s a solid album just not my cup o tea
I must have heard this first before I'd learned English. So it's kinda hard to listen to this as music and not as hazy memories. Three stars?
Minder slecht dan verwacht. Kon bijna van wat nummers genieten
Not all the songs are really hardcore, living after midnight has bruce Springsteen vibes
liked it more than I thought I would. Would listen again.
I thought this album would be "harder"
Not bad - I won't seek it out again though.
I dunno, something about this one just didn't stand up to time liked I hoped it would. 3/5
Judas Priest has a classic British heavy metal sound (they were one of the originators of it, to be fair) -- they sound a bit like Black Sabbath on speed. Heavy, driving drumbeat with very fast, technical guitar licks. I give these guys credit for helping define the sound, and it has a lot of fans -- I'm just not one of them. The songs are repetitive without a ton of variety from track to track. I'll leave this one to the headbangers.
Not a heavy metal guy, but found this album quite listenable. Catchy tunes and not too overboard, like Metallica.
Fav: Breaking the law
I'm intrigued. I've heard of Judas Priest, of course, but I don't know if I've ever actually listened to any of their songs. Okay, this is kind of what I thought I would be getting. 80's heavy metal. I like it so far. Oooooh I really like "United". The vocals are really nice on this song. I'm on track 7 of 11 and I'm surprised to realize that there hasn't been a song on here that I didn't like. They've all been pretty good so far. Track 10 is pretty cool. Seems like they were going for a National Anthem vibe here. 3/5 Not a genre I typically gravitate towards, but I did enjoy it.
Not my style of music, but I can appreciate why Judas Priest was as big as they were.
Ok. Two songs I’ve heard before, only one of which I liked.
nista wow ali solidno
I'm sure it's a good album if you like metal. It all just kind of went in one ear and out the other for me.
Rock dudes
Breaking the law
Probably the third best Priest album. I remain shocked this was picked as their appearance over others. If I ever run into Rob Halford in San Diego again I will ask him about it.
Better than I was expecting! I’m not a huge heavy metal fan, but most of these songs were pretty good. “Breaking the Law” was actually one of the weaker songs on the album, I thought, but god is it catchy.
I'll give it this: it did grow on me. I still didn't love it though
Hard rock, not bad
1/1/24. Happy new year! Decent hard hitting metal album, somewhat melodic.
Well, Judas Priest. The typical sound, and the unique voice. Some of their more famous titles like "Breaking the Law", "United" or "Living After Midnight". It's not one of my favorite bands, but not bad.
BREAKIN THE LAW BREAKIN THE LAW
This is fine, if this is your genre. Not my personal favorite, but I can appreciate it.
Dad rock. Not bad tho. enjoyed it overall, but i didn't really fuck with any particular song super heavy. Feeling a strong 3 on this one
Rapid Fire // Breaking the Law // United // 3.5/5
A really enjoyable album. Surprisingly modern sounding with seemignly heavy influence from Sabbath, Iron Maiden (or maybe it's the other way around). Regardless, I enjoyed this album, its high energy and raw rock power.
I can see how influential this album was to the metal bands that followed, although on today’s standards this isn’t anything unusual
Fun! Not a bad album to rock out to
Really liked the guitars on this album. Only realised they were British halfway through the album. Something I might go back to maybe every few months
This album is a metal classic. This was the band's sixth album, and by this time, the band had matured and found their sound. Their sound inspired much of metal music - power chord riffs, driving drums, and a scream/ falsetto lead singer
I enjoyed this album! Short and sweet. I was a little amused because this is considered Heavy Metal but to me it fits in Rock? I'm not entirely sure how the genre/sub-genres are defined and who decides this shit. I enjoyed the crunchy distorted guitars and the solos. Rob Halford's voice is also solid, it reminded me a LOT of Bruce Dickinson's voice. Honestly I was reminded a lot of Iron Maiden but I think that's the genre? Disclaimer: I've listened to Iron Maiden WAY more than I have Judas Priest. Don't know who came first and found their sound first. Also I'm honestly shocked SuperNatural the TV show never had ANY Judas priest songs :| If they had just let go of fucking "Carry On My Wayward Son" they'd have had some great options. Vibe: Motorbike roadtrip and driving 20-30% over the speed limit the whole way through. Standouts: Rapid Fire, Breaking the Law, Grinder 3.5/4
Definitely a piece from its time. Groundbreaking for sure, however the genre has since developed much more. A good album, but not one that suites my tastes.
Not a big heavy metal fan, but I did enjoy this. After awhile it all sounds the same, though.
Good
Um bom álbum que ilustra o auge do metal. Rebeldia jovem pura e muitos riffs, mas nada que o torne marcante
Rob’s voice isn’t my favorite, but there are several songs I like.
It's good, but I prefer a lot of their other records, but its definitely a solid heavy metal record. 6.5/10
Run of the mill early 80s hair metal. I didn’t find this overly memorable, but nor was it bad either.
Another surprisingly good metal album. I don't have the knowledge of metal to determine if this is good, bad, or average. All I know is it was very listenable. I won't be rushing out to buy it or listen to any other Judas Priest albums, but all in all a positive experience.
first track 5 min after waking up, good morning 😂 a wild mix on that album
Would listen again, couple cheesy songs but still some bangers
High octane, a little angry but good fun.
I spent a lot of time listening to metal as a teen and young adult, and could never get into Judas Priest. Gave this a few goes start to finish and it's still not for me, but I can hear the good in it. Breaking the Law and Living After Midnight are bangers, but it doesn't do it for me. 3 stars.
Honestly, the rock is supreme in this. They have excellent chord progressions and solos are very tasty. I enjoy the music, but I think the singing is what turns me off. He has this monotone vibrato that is ok, but just doesn’t click for me. I appreciate many things about this and see myself listening to it again.
it wasn't really what i was in the mood for but i listened nonetheless. i enjoyed it more than iron maiden but that's relatively speaking. highlights were Rapid Fire (very cool way to start an album (i love seeing what a band's choice is for their album's first song)), Grinder (again relatively speaking), You Don't Have to be Old to be Wise, and Living After Midnight, the latter of which i actually did enjoy a lot. again though not really what i'm into, i can respect it and appreciate it from a distance
I don’t know why I didn’t listen to more of this in the 80s. Really enjoyed it.
Red, White, and Blue is a cool song. Overall, very solid album by a band I don't normally listen to.
I haven’t really listened to these old metal albums before and I can’t tell if they’re supposed to be somewhat cheesy or if it’s just that they’re 30-40 years old but I have trouble taking them seriously. Still pretty fun though, guitars sound great.
The guitar and percussion- like, come on now; the tempo is ideal for headbanging; some absolutely gorgeous guitar solos, and I enjoy the way the songs are structured to highlight the instrumental work; the strain and veracity of the vocals adds to the atmosphere of intensity and lyrical violence and soul; would love to hear Gaga perform Metal Gods; has elements that remind me of Foreigner, Queen, The Who, and AC/DC, and which would later build towards works such as Nine Inch Nails or Guns N' Roses. A few of the melodies are flat and lacking a certain je ne sais quoi that might elevate the tracks to a higher sonic and spiritual place; Several anthemic songs that I can totally see hyping up a sold out arena. Interestingly, I expected this album to be much 'harder' than it was: there is a nice variation in volume, intensity, and feeling, which works well to keep me engaged and demonstrates a level of craft and vision for the complete album. More and more it reminds me of Foreigner/Styx and AC/DC, with that kind of tenor mixed with powerful rhythmic guitars and solo expressions to keep people roused and dancing. Standouts: Rapid Fire, Metal Gods, Grinder, You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise, The Rage.
80s metal rock!
Enjoyed it, a nice listen but nothing stood out to me.
3.1
3.5/5 not sure about this, i'll have to relisten. niceish vibes though
Living after midnight and Breaking the law
Ticks all the classic hair metal tropes and it's as silly as the rest of them but I thought it had more variety and better riffs than the average. Only knew breaking the law beforehand but it tells you most of what you need to know about the album. Not really one to be over analysed is it, you know what you're getting. Enjoyed it for what it was.
Some cool riffs and drums here, but it just isn't that interesting. Goes in the same category of AC/DC or kiss for me. This is classed as "metal" or "hard rock" here, but feels more like rock for the masses. Quite poppy. Not a fan of breaking the law. Living after midnight slightly better Didn't dislike it, but not sure what makes it make this list really. Won't be back. 2.5
It’s like Led Zeppelin if they only used power chords and wore bondage gear.
metal.
I liked it more than I thought, but still kind of blends together for me in a very uninteresting way. In the soundtrack of my life I’ll probably skip this
Very good!
Nothing particular about this album jumps out at me, but the tunes are good. It sounds like perfect car mechanic music. I can see listening to this again some time.
Pretty gay. Mostly cringe lyrics. Rob’s voice is amazing but just too extra for this early of an album
I might have grinder stockholm syndrome but I liked it
I knew Breaking the Law and Living After Midnight from the radio. Other than that I don't know much about Judas Priest. The vocals aren't bad. There are some good riffs here. Metal isn't my thing but I can enjoy it now and again. 3 stars.
I’m not a metalhead, so this isn’t really my comfort zone. What turns me off with most metal isn’t usually the music itself but the vocals— I don’t like screaming, yelling, and or even too much macho growling. Luckily, Rob Halford only does the latter one of those three, and he does enough actual singing that I was able to listen to the whole album. There were times when his voice got on my nerves a little, but not as much as standard metal vocals. As for the album itself, I was surprised to realize I was already familiar with two songs. I’ve liked Breaking the Law for a long time— it and You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’ are the two songs I readily identify as Judas Priest. What I didn’t realize was that Living After Midnight, which I’ve heard and enjoyed on the radio many times, was also them. Both are super catchy and have been stuck in my head for the past 24 hours. Some other things that stuck out— some nice drum fills and guitar riffs in the first few tracks and an amazing guitar solo in Grinder. On the downside, there were a few songs where the vocals began to annoy me a little, but the biggest turnoff for me was United, which seemed really corny and out of place for me. The version I listened to online had Red, White, and Blue tacked onto the end as a bonus track, which I didn’t realize until after, and I was just thinking ‘another hokey patriotic song? What’s with these guys?’ So maybe that colored my opinion too much. Maybe I’d have given this four stars if I’d listened to the true record and not a special edition.
rahh
These guys sound like they’re more interested in being rock stars than actually making good music. This selection is so uninspired and derivative that it begs the question, why make an album at all? The production is good and so is the playing, therefore, whatever. 3/5
Breaking the Law has a pretty sick riff but other than that nothing very notable
not my favorite genre but generally enjoyable all the way through
Some interesting melodies and guitar riffs
Epitome of dad rock. nice instrumentals but the lyrics feel over the top and too dramatic, sometimes even ridiculous.
listened to a little. decent
Judas Priest inspired a lot of the thrash bands that I love, but I just can’t get into them. It all feels so cheesy, almost like a parody of itself. A bit fun to listen to, but there’s nothing to really chew on.
Even though I’m not a big fan of heavy metal, I liked the musicality of this album for the tune. It had rhythm, and lyrics- but overall I probably wouldn’t pick it unless I was feeling angry/angsty.
Right off the bat, vocals seem a little weak. Interesting how much the sound varies from song to song here. There's some stuff that points towards their later defining sound, but there are also a few hair metal bops and a few boomer-ass tracks. It was decent overall, but if I wanted to listen to Judas Priest, I'd probably just put on Painkiller.
Breaking the law...
Solid 80s meta album, no complaints, just don’t listen to this style much these days
AJ: 🤘🏻
meh
Heavy metal. Pas trop dans mon style, mais j'ai aimé Breaking the Law et Living after Midnight.
Blir alltid litt skuffa når eg sette på detta albiet, for eg forvente meg Painkiller, men så får eg United og Red, White & Blue
Kinda fun, kinda silly arena metal. I'm not really into it but it's not bad.
3.5
It’s alright,i don’t really dig the vocals and the riffs are just ok.I know it’s a really important metal record but even the bangers “login after midnight” and “breaking the law” are just fine. Not amazing
A few well known tracks and found another track or two to enjoy, Grinder especially. Has a steady sound and maybe they all kind of start sounding the same after a minute
Apparently the first proper heavy metal album. Influenced Metallica et al. It's ok for what it is, certainly better than 99% of metal that followed it. Big riffs and the growly to operatic style of singing which some other artists took to either extreme, but here it is just about palatable. Recognised the 3 singles! So as it is a pioneer of its genre. A low 3 (me being very generous)
Went hard
Good but pales in comparison to the Metallica album we had earlier this week. Bad timing for Judas Priest. A couple hits but everything else feels generic. Although it was probably a lot more fresh in 1980.
Bit heavy for my liking. Don't think I'll give it a listen again
Not a bad album but not one I will listen to again through choice. Drums, guitar and vocals aren't bad but I prefer heavier than this personally
A stepping stone to thrash metal. To me, that's all it is. The growling vocals, deep bass, and rapid heavy guitar playing are all characteristics shared with contemporary Motorhead or ZZ Top. What makes this album stick out is their arena sound and anthems like "United" or the bonus track "Red, White, & Blue" that put them on the same wavelength as glam metal but for a more hardcore audience. Started off pretty strong then ended off with "Steeler" on a bang, but didn't care much for the forgettable middle. "Breaking the Law" is a unique standout track that represents the era alongside "Ace of Spades." The other hit, "Living After Midnight" seems to be copying glam metal hits, and I'm not sure how much I'd like it if I hadn't heard it so much growing up on the radio. Favorites: Metal Gods, Breaking the Law, The Rage
S'alright. There's some classic Priest hits on here, and it has the early sounds of what will become Screaming For Vengeance. It's rooted quite a bit in hard rock, so it doesn't always hit for me, but I still liked this.
Found myself pretty bored while listening to this. I wish I liked it more. I guess I don't get it. 2.5/5
Much metal. Maybe a bit too much for me, personally.
Braking the law to klasyka, ale reszta nie siadła tak dobrze.
Day 4: Possibly something worth listening to again very loudly in the gym, but generally quite average. Not really any tracks that stand out hugely, but if you're in the mood for it then it it'll sound nice enough
Just seems like run of the mill metal to me
What even is this? I suppose it sounded new when it came out?
3.5
it’s just judas priest. i prefer screaming for vengeance and have confirmed my lesser enthusiasm for classic rock. much more to my taste than the last album though
Enjoyable even if not my favorite type genre of metal
Not as bad as I was expecting, but still not good. For the genre of 80s metal, the best compliment I can give is: I didn't hate it.
• Heavy metal is not really my thing but it was honestly kind of fun • I liked the guitars and it was a pretty classic heavy metal album • I don’t think I would listen to the whole album again • Favourite song: Rapid Fire
Judas Preist is one of those brands where I never remember to listen to them but when I do hear them they rule and I wonder why I don't listen to them more. Then I forget again until the next time.
Enjoyable but dated and hasn’t stood test of time. Couple good songs but overall not memorable.
БРЕЙКИНГ ЗЕ ЛОУ БРЕЙКИНГ ЗЕ ЛОУУУУ. Тот самый музон для бабок у падика. С группой абсолютно такие ассоциации, хотя альбом не плох. 6/10
Album #4 Out of all the Judas Priest albums to choose for this list I feel that British Steel was the obvious choice but not the best. Sure it has classic bangers like "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight" which were some of their most successful and accessible songs, but a lot of the material here feels like filler and by far has more filler than any other priest album I've listened to. Even if it does have some filler on the track list, its still a fun ride but this would not be the album id choose to introduce someone to the band as the material on a lot of their other albums beats this out. Favorite Track: Grinder
aight but also kinda meh
Breaking the LAW!!!
Killer cover though you have to wonder just how those fingers aren't totally cut up and bleeding over all that British Steel. Jokes aside, other than some minor quibbles around the sonic qualities of the mix, I'm into this record more than I would've thought based on prior impressions of Judas Priest. Breaking the Law and Living After Midnight are the two pillars under which some lesser songs do find cover. And yet, better than expected.
Yes, yes yes! Clean, hard metal rock. Vocals are not my favorite metal vocals, but the rock is rocking! Some inventive riffs in here, a half-hearted ballad in Red, White, and Blue; decent anthem in United, although - I'm not sure what they're united over...unless it's just united in Metal, which is cool, I guess. Metal Gods and Breaking the Law are my favorites. I can feel their performance in their music; probably a great band to see live. Decent album here, not top shelf metal, but close 3.5/5
Enjoyable hard rock. Favorite song is "United"
Metal
On a Metal scale of Magnesium to Osmium, (British) Steel is pretty appropriate for what you’re going to find within.
Wish I would have discover this earlier, would have loved it.
I liked the album more than I thought I would. Unfortunately, the singers voice got to me over time. Two awful songs, united and red, white and blue. I guess red white and blue isn't technically on this album, so that's a positive.
Enjoyed this overall…. I knew breaking the law from watching beavis and butthead off of an old VHS in the 90s. Living after midnight is fun!! An obvious comparison to his music is be the "cousin" of Iron Maiden, lots of similarities to their sound. Significantly less shredding and noodling than Maiden but still some great leads and fun melodies.
They've got some good tracks but definitely feel like a diet Iron Maiden. Album opens strong with Rapid Fire, Metal Gods and the classic, Breaking The Law but then falls off a bit. United stinks. Living After Midnight is another classic but the remainder of the album is pretty forgettable. Also I didn't realize it wasn't officially part of the tracklisting, but because I had to hear it, Red, White & Blue should really give this review another star deduction.
This album is ok. I found the guitar work to be rather sloppy and got the impression that they are mediocre guitarists that turn the distortion up to 11 so it sounds like they're super good. I don't mind the guy's voice. This album just didn't really connect with me. Didn't hate, didn't really enjoy either.
A landmark of 80’s metal and one that deserves all of the praise it gets.
Prima album, maar niet mijn favoriet van Judas.
Overall enjoyable metal. Feels very similar to the 70s era sabbath that I've listened to-great riffs, great execution, just a little less passionate than those albums were. Felt a smidge formulaic at times and the songs began to blend together somewhat after a while, but that isn't necessarily that bad when the overall quality of the songs was high. The god awful red white & blue bonus track left me with a horrible taste in my mouth until I realized it wasn't part of the original product, thankfully. Highlights include rapid fire, breaking the law, and living after midnight.
3.5
80's metal komt op mij helaas vaak nogal cheesy over en ook deze keer heb ik daar wat last van. Maar het kon erger! Ik deel weer een veilige 3 uit.
Decent. Bit samey. Liked breaking the law and the last song Grinder Live. Seemed to sound better than the other songs.
I SHOULD like it, but I kind of don't. It's fine.
rough but effective
3.5/5 I was surprised to find out I had heard a couple of these songs. However, this is the kind of widdly guitar that I don't enjoy as much. It was pretty good, but in a kind of cheesy way almost. Meh, it wasn't bad.
Reminded me of Motorhead and Iron Maiden from the outset which isn't the worst thing in the world however I do find the latter's style of singing a little cheesy which definitely applies here. Also, not too dissimilar to yesterday's music which I preferred. It's okay, I'm not a new fan but I don't hate them.
Ok album
yep thats 80s metal its ok red white and blue was awful though
Despite being a big metalhead in my younger days, I never gave Priest any attention. Refreshing to listen to now, though I think Maiden took their brand of NWOBHM and perfected it. Probably won't listen to anything else by them, but if it was 10-15 years ago I'd have been a lot more hooked.
Love me some 80s rock. Really enjoyed this record even though I think a lot of the songs are pretty barebones. Great guitar work though.
3/5. Some good songs on here but several skips. It’s definitely still listenable but nowhere near perfect.
Catchier than most of the metal so far, so I get the appeal.
Best Song: Rapid Fire. A nice (relatively) high-speed kickoff to the album. Worst Song: United. Just pure cheese. Can't imagine what kind of dorks there must be standing in a crowd, chanting this song with their whole hearts. Ditto for "Red, White & Blue". Overall: I find that Judas Priest really suffers from the significance of their influence. They - along with Motorhead - inspired a lot of modern thrash metal, and one thing those modern derivatives have done is really crank up the speed and intensity of the genre. The effect is that going back to listen to the progenitors of the genre feels like listening to thrash metal at half-speed, and I kept waiting for each track to kick into a higher gear. The music is still alright, and I can appreciate Halford's theatrics, but it kind of feels like an old man's version of speed now.
E jo vokst opp med Judas Priest, så litt skuffa over at da ikkje føltes meir nostalgisk
Fine
Fine
Massively let down by the vocals in places.
Demasiado
This is a very important record in the evolution of heavy metal, but it's outdated now. Production is remarkably good for a heavy record this old. Musicianship is great. The songs are just not that interesting to me. It's too hard rock for metal and too metal for hard rock. 5 stars when it was new, 3 stars now. Favorite song: grinder.
Mucho mejor de lo que esperaba. Nunca fui muy heavy en los 80 y lo poco que oía me parecía "muy duro" para mis gustos. Escuchado 40 años después es casi música ligera. Me han gustado "Metal Gods", "Breaking the law" y "United".
Solid metal LP from an outfit I've been meaning to check out for a while. Rides the line between genuine expression and outright cheese fairly well, and knows when a track has run its melodic course and needs to end. An enjoyable listen that goes to show less is often more (except when it comes to guitar tone).
Solid British heavy metal stuff, never really loved this kind of music. I prefer stuff like Death and Sepultura. Still cool though. 3/5.
Solid sample of 80's metal with an element of controlled thrash that actually allows for the music to be heard.
Great way to kick off 80's metal!
Surprisingly listenable
I'm a huge Priest fan, but I never found this one more than simply good. That balls-to-the-wall heavy metal sound that everyone loves on breaking the law? yeah, that mostly only exists on that one song. The rest of this album is much closer to stadium rock than heavy metal. It's because it's a foundational album to the genre, but that doesn't mean it's an exceptional one. In the end this feels more sanitised for a larger audience than the albums that preceded it and lacks the power of the albums that succeeded it.
I love Judas Priest but this is far from being one of my favorites from them. There are some great track in there, including the classics Breaking the Law, Rapid Fire and Living After Midnight, but there's also some lukewarm moments that prevents it from being a classic in my book. Also United is just terrible, a poor attempt at making an anthem that everybody would shout in concert.
Just because it's their most commercial album doesn't mean it's their best.
Perfect song to scream during a concert or wasted in a karaoke
This might be one of the Judas Priest less impressive album. Of course, the hit "Breaking The Law" is insane and there are a few great songs like Grinder, Steeler or Rapid Fire, but it's not a strong Judas Priest album overall. Tracks like United or Red, White & Blue are so bad it hurts.
Started out thinking it had neither the adrenaline-fuelled riffs of some heavier, thrashier bands, nor the silly fun of some of the more OTT metal bands. It's a not-completely-satisfying mix of the two, but by the end it won me over a bit by veering off in unexpected directions, like reggae (The Rage). 2.5 / 3
Great metal album of it's time
Solid (hard) rock album, but too mainstream for me to really enjoy it.
Rather straightforward hard rock album, less heavy than I had expected.
I don't know how to review this one. It's definitely not my genre (metal), but it has its catchy, rockin' moments. The album is cohesive, very well produced, and the drums are stellar. Compared to other metal albums on the list I've heard so far, I actually quite liked this one. Not like I'll go out of my way to hear it again, but there is a fun driving energy in this album. For me, it's a 3 - it's not my thing but I like it.
A good fun album. Close to a 4.
Some real highs on here. Imagine it would be brilliant live
Cool but does not stand out
Would have been better as a single album
Grandmother's favourite band. Precious memories <3
Diesel forge Cold hard molten fumes Playful brute
A solid heavy metal album and really highlights why Judas Priest is a real classic in the genre. Never having heard much of their stuff, with this album as their sixth outing, they clearly haven't lost any steam with their face melting guitar riffs, heaving drums no doubt influencing the era of 1980s hair metal bands. Best: Breaking the Law Worst: Red, White & Blue
Notes - Hard rock/heavy metal band - Lots of chuggy guitar, driving drums and bass, gritty kinda operatic vocals - Similar to zz top and guns n roses, motorcycle music - Used to see the tab book for this album at the place where I took guitar lessons as a kid, the art stuck with me - Vocals remind me of iron maiden a bit - Started listening to it, immediately was like “I’m not in the right mood to enjoy this” and went back later and it was muuuuuch more enjoyable - Recorded at ringo Starr’s house? Lol Fav - The rage - Love the opening and the guitar solo! Least fav - Red white and blue - Super cheesy, was included as a bonus track but not necessary Fun time! Not for me though 3/5
felt cute, might break a law later
Honestly more fun than I really give them credit for. Some goofy moments but overall it's very enjoyable metal. Their drummer is basic af though.
More fun than I expected, proper Bri'ish metal
BREAKING THE LAW BREAKING THE LAW.
Da nema ove aplikacije, bome ne bih slušao ove albume nikad, bar ne u ovim godinama, razdoblju. But here I am. Breaking the Law je the jam.
Not quite as hard/heavy/fast as I expected. Good, solid rock
Queer and can’t listen to Breaking the Law without thinking about the Pansy Division parody song.
After a pretty dreadful run of albums I was not looking forward to this. Not my genre and anticipated a lot of clichés and not much fun. I was wrong, best thing all week, more varied and interesting than I anticipated. Some good songs. Breaking the Law the obvious best song.
Ok. Little too 80s heavy.
Solid album. Nothing amazing, nothing bad. Sounds like the soundtrack to a movie set in the early 80s for a specific type of character.
The guitar tones are great but I kinda hate the lyrics. It’s a tough one for me, if we hadn’t had so much metal recently I might feel differently
Classic Metal. coming to it so late it does suffer from sounding slightly cliched but only because it was one of the Metal templates.
Interesting to hear metal influences
yeah its good, but I likely won't go back.
I tend to like Judas Priest, but I must say that with my mood today, it does not fit so well. Good album, at least one classic of all times for the metal world but nothing so remarkable compared to other stuff on this list.
Apparently Megadeath are "progressive metal" and Judas Priest are "groove metal". Either way that's a lot of metal in two consecutive randomly selected album. (Fingers crossed for something more soothing tomorrow.) Turns out I think I like my metal more groove than prog
That was a pleasant surprise. If I ever start working out again I would definitely put that on.
Good piece of music history. Of its time.
Some heavy metal. Not great, not terrible.
Fun refresher
o sea bien! pero bueno basta de esta música ah kqksjsjs 7 / 10
I’d never taken much time to listen to Judas Priest and only really became familiar with their hits a few years ago. I found British Steel to be enjoyable throughout, it’s fun and I never felt like I wanted to skip a track. It doesn’t set my world alight, but I’ll definitely be revisiting it as there are some great songs
Metal is not my favorite genre, but I much prefer this Judas Priest type of metal to the modern screamo. Breaking the Law is of course iconic, for very good reason. I also loved Living After Midnight.
Not a huge Judas Priest fan, but definitely appreciated this album. I was already familiar with "Breaking the Law" but I also enjoyed the shredding in "The Rage".
Cool
I used to like this kinda stuff when I was in my teens. I just find it a bit cheesy now. I mean it ticks all the classic heavy metal boxes but its all a bit meh. Post Sabbath riffs..angry vocals, iconic sleeve. Even a couple of hit singles.
I always like the sound of these heavy metal bands, but if I had to tell you if a random song was Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, or Metallica I could not.
Catchy heavy rock songs with a nice sound, but only a few standout tracks and wouldn’t add many to my regular playlists
Heavy metal, fuck yeah
A fine effort from Judas Priest, but was nothing memorable at the end of the day for me. Still culturally important for the hard rock and metal scene, but it's no Black Sabbath (1969)
ooooh yeahhhh! actually found myself bopping my head along a lot. the vocals aren't my favorite but there's a time and a place for the beats and tempo, and apparently time and place is digging through spreadsheets.
Very Rock ‘n Roll. This one reminds me of School of Rock. This is a terrible way to rate music, but whatevs.
It alright
legal, 3/5
They really balance between dark and silly. So much so that when the sing something like "United" I just don't trust it. Fun music to turn your brain off to.
Not quite what I expected. Sounded like hard rock from the 80s. I wasn’t bad, but also seemed kind of generic to me.
Probably at least one pervert amongst them. Check the hard drives.
When I think back to Judas Priest, I feel like everyone called it heavy metal, and maybe it is, but it just seems like a hardworking rock band to me now. The album and the band were much better than I remembered. The relentless pounding rhythms in Steeler were excellent. There were a few popular tunes like Breakin the Law that I remembered with some fondness. These were counterbalanced by the dreck of United and Red, White & Blue which were both difficult to chew through. Not sure I would be up for a deeper dive of JP, but it was interesting to hear some of the sounds countering my internal narrative about this band.
My least hated metal band yet? I guess that’s good enough for a 3.
This album was good. Have not listened to them before but will definitely be checking their other stuff out. Feels like a 3.5 for me. 1. Rapid Fire 2. Breaking the Law 3. The Rage
I may not be up to date on the definition of heavy metal or perhaps it's progressed over 30 years. But the pop influence on this album was so undeniable that it felt like glam. Regardless I was just happy to not have another 90 minute trance EDM slog.
Two monster hit singles, and barely a bad track on this. A bridge between Sabbath and 70s metal and the NWOBHM, with its poppy concision. Can see why they were huge.
I’ve heard a lot of Priest songs but this is the first time I’ve listened to an album all the way through. I can’t help but think of summers in the 80s watching my uncles lift weight on rickety, makeshift benches. Good album.
better than i expected
7/10 Best Song - Breaking the Law
Decent riffs.
Steelers and Grinder are enough to save a bordering on boring album.
The album births elites in the rock/metal works, and you can hear a lot of influence of Metallica and Van Halen etc. It just doesn’t do much for me
Ooh okay not too sure what to expect… Rapid fire opens up the album and yeah that’s rapid fire tempo. Great drumming especially must be hard to keep up with the time. The only thing is that the lyrics are just very generic metal lyrics but it’s not the main attraction to be fair. Metal gods has a great little riff going on it’s not as cool as the last song but still good enough though. The end is interesting though with the noises. I do recognise breaking the law It’s a good single ( especially by metal standards) it’s a very destructive sounding track which I love about it the only problem is that chorus is so repetitive. Grinder is a cool sludgy stomper probably a favourite. Just not much to say I like the handclaps of united and it’s a good idea for a song but it just feels too much of a mix between a hippie song and a dumb football chant. You don’t have to be old to be wise is a true anthemic track not a favourite to me but one that I bet would be amazing in a live setting. Living after midnight… eh it’s alright but is just the most generic commercial sounding thing on here makes sense as a single though. I love the bass line at the start of the rage actually the crunchy guitars are amazing too it’s one if those ones that feels like the listener has been on a journey amazing! The album closes with steeler it’s a fun little jaunty track good but not spectacular. The songs are solid, but all samey you know I liked it but didn’t love it 3/5.
This was pleasant and melodic. Like I can play this at a party and not annoy everyone. Jack Black approves
I like living after midnight and United.
Not an album I thought I would enjoy but it’s good!
What I expected. Nothing more nothing less.
As an album it was coherent yet didn't flow. Still solid, and lots of strong work here. As it's not nostalgic for me I'll probably not revisit and still glad to have listened.
Reconheço a importância e qualidade da solidificação do metal.
It was alright, not sure what I expected from this album but can't say it was anything special for me. this album is probably a 2.5 maybe but ill give it 3 stars anyway.
Hard, heavy, and repetitive. A clear influence on loads of bands I love, but a bit sterile and underwhelming for me. Would listen again, but mostly to have another go at picking out bits that went on to be "borrowed" by bands I like more! Also, NWOBHM is possibly the worst genre/movement name in all of music history!
Classic metal, just not my thing
A "cleaner" sounding metal band, leaning more towards rock to me than metal. A good listen!
This album left a lot to be desired for me. The drums were pretty much the same on all songs, not much variety there and the vocals aren't overly exciting either. Some interesting guitar parts but that was about it.
A very accessible 80s metal album, clearly setting the stage for hair metal to come. I didn't hear anything that was too mindblowing, but a good album nonetheless. Liked the energy and Rob Halford's vocals. 3.5
Enjoyed this more than I expected. A load of fun, while laying down the groundwork for the best of what 80's metal had yet to bring us.
Decent, i liked rapid fire, grinder, the rage, steeler. Good guitar riffs
Plenty that rocks in this album. Breaking the Law is still just pure anti-authority joy. Metal Gods just feels silly to me though. United is chant worthy. Beyond that, it's metal in a way that didn't feel weighed down with all the cliches.
Proper anthemic metal. The first half of this album slaps and I was going to give it a higher rating but I think it tailed off a bit after Living After Midnight
OMG! Yesterday it was Sugarcubes and today this! 1001albumgenerator certainly lives up to it's name. I like a bit of Metal and Lemmy has always been my hero (he damaged my eardrums back at Hammersmith) so this feels too clean to me now- well produced with undeniably catchy tunes. I liked the singles back then (Breaking and Living) and listening to the whole album now it's cohesive and well written so I've nothing to say against it, only that it doesn't make me want to turn the volume up.
Meat and potatoes heavy metal - the template for a lot of other metal from the late 80s/early 90s. Never really that into it me'self.
Great singing and good energy, but just can’t get fully behind the butt rock genre.
Meh, it was okay, just more bloody metal ennit
I’m not a big heavy metal fan but this is a good example of the genre.
Low tempo, repetitive Mostly heavy metal, some not so much Very patriotic Some good classics though
This is the definition of an alright album. It has a couple great hits, nothing in particular stands out as bad, but at the same time the album as a whole is somewhat unremarkable and forgettable. It's perfectly fine.
3/5
It Rocks.
above average metal album
Not bad. grandpa metal
Not as bad as I was expecting, however, still not great.
If you're looking for 11 back-to-back tracks of good old-fashioned metal, you've come to the right place. Feathered hair tossing windmill power chords, finger-tip shredding solos, a chest pounding rhythm section, and Rob Halford's expansive vocal range growling and wailing. What's not to love? Side note, I was really intrigued by how 'The Rage' started. It had a Clash feel to it and I was hoping they'd continue on in that direction.
Stand out album...
I hope they knew what they were doing when they named this album British steel and then making each song as patriotic for the US as possible. Breaking the law still a classic
Lmao grinder coincidence
Shiny, tight black leather. A loud, idling Harley Davidson. Amp volume level 11. I’m eager to review this because I panned Iron Maiden’s debut release from the same year a couple of weeks ago, and as I’m only 14 LPs into these 1001ers, my page reads that metal is my least favorite genre. And that’s not accurate. I actually like metal, just to clear the record. And this record clears it. I was 21 years old in 1980, nearing the end of my stay at one of Huntsville’s (Texas) many correctional facilities named Sam Houston State University. (By the by, it was never Sam Houston Institute of Technology, or S.H.I.T. – urban myth.) One of my very best friends was a head banger named Chris. I was still listening to stuff from the likes of Foreigner and Journey and such, and when introduced to a whole set of other groups like Dio, Iron Maiden, and Priest, it was a little much initially. Matter of fact, it was downright frightening- ‘Highway to hell,’ and all that stuff (which I later discovered was not a song about knock, knock, knockin' on satan’s door at all, strictly speaking). I was frankly surprised that 'British Steel' had not one single reference to the devil or hell. ‘Course you don’t really need that on an LP populated with Killer Robots (‘Rapid Fire’), marauding pagan hordes (‘The Rage’), general mayhem (‘Breaking The Law’), and rough, gay sex (‘Grinder’). And, Judas Priest is thoughtful enough to let you know exactly what you’re in for, where you will be traveling for the next hour, with the very first opening lines: ‘Pounding the world like a battering ram. Forging the furnace for the final grand slam. Chopping away at the source. Soon the course will be done. Leaving a trail of destruction that’s second to none.’ Metal has always had an exaggerated opinion of its’ own destructive power if one takes these kind of statements literally; which, they really aren’t, even if metal sorta thinks they kinda are? Well, such are the fantasies of Priest’s target audience: underage beer drinking, pot smoking, fast driving, sex craved teenage boys. Great riffs and Rob Halford’s soaring vocals (truly second to none, with the exception of Ronnie James Dio and Bruce Dickinson) make this a very enjoyable LP. ‘You don’t have to be old to be wise,’ snarls Halford. Couldn’t agree more. But you also don’t have to be young to be metal, for about the length of this recording, after which I could go for a lil’ nap.
Solid heavy metal 3
You got Me Floatin Wait until Tomorrow Castles Made of Sand
Pretty average rock album here. Felt like a majority of the songs fall under the same setup. Breaking the law was somewhat repetitive. Living after morning was the only one that stood out. Overall it’s nothing too special. 5.8/10
before metal went glammy and pop there were bands like judas priest that kicked. the classic songs on this album make it a must
Vet klinkende Britse metal. Voor bij het eten van een zak patat in de snackbar.
First time I’ve heard of Judas Priest so definitely a new experience listening to this album. The first half/ first 5 songs I just didn’t like it, as a metal band it didn’t really excite but after You Don’t Have to Be Old to Be Wise the album is mental, and makes you want to listen to the album again and again and that’s exactly what music should do. So this is a very solid album and introduced to metal music maybe they’ll be a bit more metal and Judas Priest in my playlist.
The album was not outstanding. It had a few songs that were alright but the rest didn’t do much to make the album that great. It’s the same old 80s rock, metal sound. Not great but not horrible. Also- I think there’s something with me not liking the title tracks off of these rock albums. I didn’t see how “Breaking the Law” was good. I really liked "The Rage" though.
Not bad. Maybe I don't dislike metal as I thought I did.
