Reviews (page 9 of 11)
A great heavy metal album! I had heard of Judas Priest in the past, but I only knew them by their name and couldn't have told you any of their songs off of the top of my head. Upon listening to British Steel, I instantly recognized Breaking the Law which I have always enjoyed for its fast pace, killer main riff, and vocals. I really liked the lead singer's vocals throughout this album which usually makes or breaks this style of music for me. His voice gave me Iron Maiden-vibes (which I believe this might have preceded?), and the overall power and tone matched the quick and energetic instrumentals perfectly. In fact, I will say that this is the first metal album that I have heard where I actually enjoyed the vocals more than the music itself. I usually expect more intricate guitar and drum work from this genre, and I was surprised that the music was more straightforward than other metal bands from that time period. The best way to describe it would be if AC/DC had Bruce Dickenson as their lead vocalist (which is not a bad thing). I found the first half of the record much stronger than the second half as the last couple of songs go for a slower vibe that doesn't quite match the rest of the album. Overall, I did enjoy listening to this one a lot, and I think it would be fun to throw on again on much bigger, louder speakers. 3.5/5.
I actually kind of enjoyed this one. I didn't think I would because it's not my style of music at all, but it wasn't so hard that I couldn't enjoy it. I don't think I'll go back and listen to it again, but for a one-time listen, I liked it.
Gitaren. Favoriet is "Breaking the Law" ***
Brits surely know how to rock!!!
Good fun
Never listened to these guys other than the famous songs. It's cool. Guitar tones are excellent. Great riffage. Vocals remind me of Bruce Dickinson-era Iron Maiden. Also a good thing. But the drum beats aren't that interesting. Almost cliche. But, for all I know, Judas Priest's fame and success are the reason why they became common and cliche. Like the Beatles and sitars. Sounds hokey now but at the time it was like "whooooaaaaaaaa maaaaaaaan!" Giving this a three in relation to the other records on this list. It's good. No doubt also influential. But I wish a 2.5 was possible. In its better moments it sounds like Iron Maiden. In its boring moments, like AC/DC. Rounding up to three stars for the soaring vocals.
Enjoyed 3.5
Cradley Heath in the house!!! I only know Breaking the Law that we'll, but they are local to my old home (I had the Specials from up the road in Cov yesterday too... Maybe they should rename this 1001 Albums from the West Midlands). I feel like I know where this is going from track one, and that isn't a problem!
Ages ago as a teenager I once walked out of a Judas Priest concert early - they had a concert in town that for some forgotten reason was postponed 2 or 3 times and by the time they showed up in town apparently they couldn't sell tickets. Or even give them away. A friend of a friend was "working security" and snuck two of us in the back door of the arena (hey, free concert why not) so we were 2 of maybe 4000 in a cavernous hockey arena. Stayed for maybe 7 or 8 songs and it got a bit much - eh, I was much more judgey about music back then, it was free after all - I should have stayed dammit (but I thought it sucked). Sometimes timing is everything when listening to music. Because this morning after some (fine!) folk albums and a few rainy days blasting tunes like "Breaking the Law" was absolutely perfect. Unfortunately JP was/is always like the watered-down version of a lot of their (better, IMO) peers like Maiden, Dio/Sabbath, etc. They were a little more AC/DC without the humour than their (more-talented) British peers but that is high compliment to the best songs here (including "Living After Midnight" "Metal Gods" and "You Don't Have to Be Old to be Wise") which are pretty fun. I actually don't much like Judas Priest overall - Priest were definitely more of a Greatest Hits type band but I can objectively give this a solid 3 for having some of those hits here. This album is a good representation of those times of simple heavy rock (bridging between rock and metal) - the best cuts are definitely enjoyable. 6/10 3 stars
A good slab of 80s metal. Enjoyable, but not earth shattering
Some good metal never goes unappreciated. It's not very creative though.
good
Didn’t expect to be a fan. But in spite of it being exactly what I thought it would be, I enjoyed it. Couple of killer tracks, and some decent metal filler.
Not what I’m in to but seemed pretty good for what it was. 🤘😶
Good, but expected more.
Couple of great tracks, many very average ones.
Metal.
Not my favorite Priest album but it's alright
Most of the songs are driving. Those that aren't are not exactly stinkers, but they do bring down the energy in the middle of the record quite a bit. Fortunately, it starts and ends on a high note and remains part of a tradition which maintains those highs.
"United" and "Red, White & Blue" are really cheese and don't seem to be ironic / sarcastic. Red, White and Blue literally ends with "God Save the Queen". Maybe I'm just too much of a punk rocker, but seems like the only that should follow that is "She ain't no human being".
I mean what can I say that already hasn't been said about this album? Honestly I don't think it's their best album, but I will give it due credit. I vastly prefer Defenders of the Faith and Screaming For Vengeance though.
Ehhh
3 no me gusta bro
Rapid Fire-Drum riffs are cool. rock huh? dudes vocals not bad. that ending segment was nice, and the beginning was strong too. lyrics. uh? gotta look at em again. Metal Gods-I like the guitar riff rhythm. that hah. hah. hah tmp tmp mtp part though (my descriptions are shit but listening to the song yknow what i mean) interesting interlude. Breaking the Law-hah i like it for the title alone. i like its fast beat too YOU DONT KNOW WHAT ITS LIIIIIIKE damn he belt it tho. rocking that solo. Grinder-bam bam bam, da, da dadada is how i hear that beginning riff. nice. classsic wind up and down at the end there. United-oh hey i like the heavy feel on the intro here. i like the melody line of united-united-united we stand. its nice. gon keep on driving we never stop. hm wonder when these songs were written what hisotricallt speaking was going on. from the lyrics i feel like youd expect it to be more rock on heavy, nut nah the beat is pretty medium consistent. it suits it though. You Dont Have to Be Old to Be Wise-What a title. its not bad. i should probably relisten to figure out what theyre singing about though Living After Midnight-i like its main melody The Rage-Definitely feels like the main melody is like, heavier? with the chords its playing. song's bpm is steady slow kinda, guitar riff is neat. wah what a guitar solo at the end there Steeler-long ass guitar riff to start, not bad. Red, White and Blue-Nice slow start Lol lost it at the end there. Uh, nice rock album? Rock has never been my thing but I do like my guitar riffs.
3 1/2
Somewhere between the kind of metal I’m not usually into and the kind that I am sometimes into
Fine. Really lost steam after United.
Very classic sound, captures that early metal sound very well, and a very representative sound of that era. Lot's of great riffs, and some good hooks. Some of the slower songs dragged and became a little repetitive, but most of the tracks were to the point and packed a nice punch. Pretty standard metal, but still containing some fresh and clever songwriting.
Ok, fairly energetic, but not as good as AC/DC or Iron Maiden
I know Judas Priest, but I've never listened to this album. It's not bad.
Kind of fun and dumb, would play again or put on at a party. Didn’t sound too repetitive
A landmark album that did much to change what heavy metal was and helped paved the way for other bands and the popularity of heavy metal itself in the 80s. Not a band I listen to very often and understandably sounding a bit dated, but Robs vocals are incredible, the dualing lead guitars are brilliant but not afraid to feature catchy rhythms also. The album boasts some excellent, memorable tracks, is still fun and still worth a listen.
Harder rock than I like
⭐⭐⭐ was pleasantly surprised. i don't typically like anything '80s at all and was never interested in judas priest. may not necessarily revisit it again, or seldom, but it was surprisingly pretty good.
Classic metal album. If you know the NWOBHM then you know what this sounds like. Best Tracks: Metal Gods, Breaking The Law, You Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise
pop metal? or is metal just not that hard?
the album was short but a lot of the songs felt like they overstayed their welcome. some good music, but a lot of it sounded kind of stale. High 6
It was pretty good. I'd heard a lot of the songs before, but metal isn't my favorite tbh
good songs that all seem to sound the same but enjoyable nonetheless. a bit too heavy on the instruments but a non-shouty voice made it a lot better than a lot of similar rock
Sounds exactly like Iron Maiden, though its big hair metal. Breaking The Law case in point. Quite honestly, its interesting as a piece of metal history but I'm not particularly taken with the album.
Not my jam but I appreciate the guitar work
Not as bad as i anticipated
Reasonable solid
British Steel marks the beginning of one of the most successful careers of a British heavy metal band. There are some really good titles on this album.
I haven't really listened to much Judas Priest - not sure why, as they would have naturally blended in with a lot of the stuff I listened to as a teen. I liked this - quite a few different styles in play, including Kiss style party rock in "Living After Midnight", Motorhead style straight ahead metal in "Rapid Fire", and anthemic stadium rock in "United". Fave track is "The Rage", though, for that funky underlying post-punk line!
decent
Not too heavy, couldn’t tell if it was more punk or hair metal. Pretty enjoyable
Used to own this album. Loved it.
Rob Halford just fucking wails!
Not my bag but very competent.
metal but make it ok.
“Breakin tha law! breakin tha law!” 🤘🏻
Suoraa rokkia
Breaking the lawwwwwww
Weirdly patriotic in spots. Has some classic songs, but I still prefer "Screaming for Vengance" over this, since this is not as heavy. Favorite tracks: "Breaking the Law", "Steeler", "Living After Midnight"
1980. Key Songs: Breaking the Law, Living After Midnight, Grinder
heavy metal classic
Pretty good, not as cool as other Judas priest but still a good mix of heavy metal and hard rock. a good few guitar solos and everyone loves breaking the law. Sounds a bit dated in 2021 though. 3/5.
Hmm I dunno... I can listen to things 'like this' but then again very different from this. I cannot see the appeal really. The 'big ones' even are just not really doing it for me, I think it is really one-dimensional. I cant say for sure it was the case at the time but I feel like the lyrics are a relic of the past and just pretty cliche at this point. Maybe that is harsh for me to say about a record from 1980, but then again this review is done 46 years after. "United" just feels so incredibly out of place musically. I am feeling 2, but I am harsh here aswell. But I really do not think this has aged particularly well.
I mean it's fun but it gets really repetitive Highlights: the drums 2.0
British Steel by Judas Priest is very much classic 80s heavy rock and metal. It absolutely has its place and I can understand why it was influential, but listening to it now, a lot of it feels quite dated and, at times, a little cheesy. That said, there are definitely a couple of genuinely great songs here. “Living After Midnight” and “Breaking the Law” are classic rock tracks for a reason — big riffs, huge hooks and that unapologetically over-the-top rock-and-roll energy. They’re fun, catchy and easy to enjoy. Outside of those standout tracks though, I found much of the album fairly forgettable. Nothing is actively bad, but a lot of it blends together and feels like a parody of stereotypical dad rock or peak 80s heavy metal. The riffs are solid, but there just wasn’t enough variety or memorable songwriting to keep me fully engaged. Overall, I can appreciate its importance to the genre, but it’s probably not an album I’ll find myself coming back to. Favourite tracks: “Living After Midnight” is the clear standout for me Least favourite tracks: Nothing is terrible, but a lot of the album feels samey and leans heavily into cheesy 80s metal clichés Album artwork: Cool album cover
Not my jam.
i appreciate everything you guys did for metal. however (comma) i liked it better when it was called "killing is my business and business is good". all the good stuff sounds like load metallica. nothing wrong with load metallica. they're just fine. which is the problem. 1.5-2.4. just listen to iron maiden like a good little NWOBHM fan.
Judas Priest is a vaguely familiar name, though I'm not entirely sure where I've heard it being passed around. Anyways, this is very obviously a metal album when going by the artist/album name, band logo, album cover and year of release. I'm always happy whenever the genre predictions are easy. Let's get into it. Eeyup, feels good to be right. I've long made peace with the fact that metal isn't my thing and I am disappointed to once again announce that an album from the genre isn't to my liking. The songs have strong beginnings and a commendable level of variety, though something about my brain shuts off and filters out the rest of this music as soon as it kicks in. Still, this album is solid when taken for what it is. The songwriting is generally solid and is elevated by the swaggering guitars which underscore many of the vocal melodies. The more intense offerings are also adept, with the breakneck percussion and rough, raw sound of the guitars moving the pieces along effectively. However, while the songwriting is generally competent, I felt that the vocal performances were a little impersonal and derivative, which dragged my opinion of this album down a peg. Overall, I commend this album for being exactly what it's wants to be. I just don't care much for its vision. Book time. There's apparently intense debate among Judas Priest fans over what their best release is, to which the book pins this album as their "definitive" album. The cover artwork is iconic and regularly appears on t-shirts. British Steel embodies the sentiment of metal listeners at the time, who "...craved sounds more streetwise than prog rock, yet were alienated by punk's posturing and anti-musicality." The album was recorded on a country property that Lennon had previously lived in, which the frontman was jubilant about. Wikipedia says this album was more commercial than their previous ventures and had three successful singles, two of which are now radio staples. It was also their breakthrough release and is considered a landmark album in the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" movement (what a mouthful). Critics liked it, with the album having received enduring acclaim in the years following release. The album peaked at No. 4 in the UK, but had a more mild performance in the four other countries where it charted. The album didn't make any year-end charts, though it did re-enter the charts in a few more countries when an anniversary edition was released in 2010 - notably peaking at No. 4 in Greece. Not quite the commercial performance I was expecting, though the critics liked this album and it does appear to be a reflection of the times. If there really is a divide among what people consider to be Judas Priest's best album, then I think it can be stood to reason that these guys deserve another entry. For the time being, however, I'm content to let this one through. I cosign this inclusion.
its worse van halen? it has breaking the law on it, which i guess is cool? its kinda slow and lethargic for this kind of hair metal or black metal or 80s metal? its legit boring? where the fuck is the energy? wheres the nerve and the pizzazz? where, i ask? ugh. lameeeee ass. get to work you generic wonks.
Was never for me.
For some reason I used to think these guys were cooler. This album feels kind of weak.
Not my jam. I don’t really like metal or heavy rock and this seemed like an eternal slog despite its 45 minute run time
Sound like they were trying to be the British version of AC/DC. Sorry guys AC/DC did it better.
All I can think of listening to Judas Priest is Beavis and Butthead, which I would rather be listening to instead. Not my type of music.
From now on, my life will be divided into two distinct segments: the time before I listened to Grinder (Live from Long Beach, California) and everything that came after that startling moment. I had no idea how bad this whole ‘Judas Priest is a real band’ thing had become until then. Real people actually went to see them and cheered for them. I’m dumbfounded.
A cup of tea not made for me
I think it was corny and over the top.
'Pounding the world / Like a bat-ter-ing ram.' These so-called 'metal gods' are ear-shat-ter-ing hams: they're not exactly actorly b/c their acting skills are awful, but they're performative & only this, i.e., you can detect nothing genuine in their bang-&-thud rhythms. They're never 'breaking the law' - their sonics are too formulaic - tho they go around pretending that they're rough & tough. 'So keep it up / Don't give in / Make a stand / We're gonna win.' That's honestly the only moment that's so bad it's almost good. I've always wanted to develop a taste for metal, especially 80s metal, one that is appreciative of camp & fantasy. I've yet to succeed, b/c besides a few moments of instrumental inventiveness & pop sensibilities, this is dreadful.
Boring. Also British metal vocalists sound funny
Very boring ):
Passable metal
history aside, this album just does not stand as well as other Judas Priest albums afterwards. Outside of a few tracks it hasn't aged too well imo and I just honestly thought if I wanted 70s/80s streamlined metal id rather just listen to KISS. I love Judas Priest but this does not hit.
there are two classic tracks here. breaking the “smoke on the water” effect of a very solid memorable but easy to play riff, living after midnight is solid pop rock with a good chorus. the rest of this album just sucks. forgettable riffs that sound like they were designed for a guitar hero solo, painfully obvious and corny lyrics, a drummer doing only slightly more than the minimum to keep a rhythm going, solos just tastelessly waffle on with patternless shredding. you dont have to be old to be wise was so cheesy it made me laugh out loud. red white and blue is just plain embarrassing to me. lame as hell.
Not my cup of tea
Sonically, this is an early metal album. Metal is a style of music I don't usually reach for (and I still don't think I will at this point). The songs were certainly all high energy with plenty of guitar solos throughout, but they didn't really differentiate too much from each other. "The Rage" is the exception to that, it was more experimental and I would have liked to hear more songs like that one (the bass line carried it well). I'll also praise the drummer because the beat was steady and consistent and my foot was tapping along pretty much the whole time. I'm just not into the classic feel of this album, but it's listenable.
#335/1001. If I would be cruel, my review would be like this: I don't need to listen to this album backwards in order to want to kill myself. But I am not cruel. Instead, I confess: I used to own one Judas Priest album.
I am not really a fan of heavy metal and this album from 1980 already showed what was to come later in the 80s. It was listenable, and they are good musicians...it's just not my cup of tea.
noooo
Meh
Very loud bombastic and fast. Nonsensical as well but for its kind a worthy effort. Not for me though
C+
It’s alright. Doesn’t make me feel any sort of way. Not bad, just not all that exciting or interesting. Breaking the Law is pretty fun though.
Iconic album cover, and Rob Halford deserves eternal credit for being one of the first if not the first openly gay mainstream metal singers. Which is curious in retrospect, really, considering how much of the metal aesthetic - leather, spikes and studs and rivets, that very very overtly manliness stuff - today is also very much associated with the gay scene. Anyway. Metal isn't really my scene,by and large, but some of the lyrics (something about pounding the world like a battering ram) are (involuntarily?) funny
Demasiado metalero, pero 2 canciones buenas. Destaco United y The Rage
I looked forward to listening to this because this is leagues better than Buffalo Springfield. Still not my genre
1.5
Oh, no thank you
This came dangerously close to a three as it’s an album better than its singles suggest, but even then the best of it feels like Sabbath-lite, and the worst of it, the terrible ‘United’, is simply unacceptable.
Turns out I only kinda like one or two Priest songs. Not even enough to finish them. Sacrilegious I’m sure - but it’s just annoying
Okay, I'll be honest. I don't metal. It takes a lot for me to like a metal album, none of which I can explain in any comprehensive way that would make any kind of sense. Maybe it has something to do with the vocals on many modern metal albums, maybe it's because of the guitars and drums, I don't know. Suffice to say, it's not my genre. And this album doesn't help. I mean the album is fine, it's not particularly hard and overwhelming, but a lot of the songs feel more like arena rock with a little bit of an edge, which is another genre I'm not a fan of. I think the album sounds fine, it's good, but it's not something thay I would enjoy or listen to again. Breaking The Law is a good song, and the only major highlught on the album for me, but it's not for me. I hope there are other albums that can correct my opinion, but this is not the album. Good, not great, and still not for me.
...
Tremendously stupid
Ei tämmönen zz top lämmitä yhtään
Ei Juudaksella ihan lähde, vaikka yritys on kova.
This was fun for a one time listen as a way to finally get around to listening to this critically acclaimed band, however I don't think I will be returning to this album ever. This album has made me want to check out more of the band's work.
Not at all my cup of tea, but some songs were partly decent and the album was recorded at Ringo’s house.
1.5 - not bad for a metal album
Completely fine, and I enjoyed the slightly more melodic tracks. Also credit Halford for being an openly gay man in this genre.
Hard to listen to Judas Priest as a child of the 90s and not conjure Beavis holding a chainsaw, chopping off Butthead's finger. Maybe not what you want, but it has a certain charm.
Not my favourite style of music
Breaking the Law Living After Midnight
top 3 - Steeler, Grinder, The Rage sort of underwhelming to me
Som Van halen bestemt ikke dårligt. God energi.
it’s alright, it’s just not for me.
Okay whatever this is Judas Priest doing their nerd rock
just okay,
End of 70s heavy metal. Really poor. Liked the genre but it had died. This sounds like a spinal tap tribute album and is definitely not worth listening to. There's nothing you can't hear in led zeppelin or deep purple and though the singer is competent it's only of interest in a historical sense to witness decline. The live track at the end was OK. Listened on Spotify and it didn't seemed remastered for spotify at all. On the other hand it's possibly not worth the investment. Two stars for effort Sorry lads

Heavy metal is not my thing but I did like the guitar and drums sound. The voice not so much.
Not my cup of tea. Or beer while driving. One song I recognized, and one song I liked.
Heavily frontloaded Super boring riffs Just listen to the singles
The first song of the album got me super excited. It is a super energetic and fast track with a lot of attitude from the voice and with a killer sounding guitar riff. But after it, no other song could catch my attention again. From the second song moving forward, the album slows down and turns into standard hard rock with some very cheesy moments, such as 'United' or 'Living After Midnight'. I'll admit that the quality of the sound is quite good, that there are some decent sounding riffs, and that Rob Halford's is an incredibly talented singer, but I think in general this album lacks in power and can get a bit repetitive. Everything that should be striking, like the high notes from the singer or the fast solos, didn't do absolutely anything for me. Unfortunately, I can't say I liked this. Loved how promising the first track sounded, but I disliked a lot how disappointing the rest of the track list is.
Some of the music was ok but not my taste of metal. I liked the beginning of The Rage but once the vocals come in, I check out...
Not my thing
Not my vibe but I get why some like this
4/10
Camp, cheesy and a fair amount of fun in places. Great guitar work and several highlights such as Breaking the Law and Living after Midnight. Not bad overall, but not brilliant.
Respect, but sonically it’s just standard ’80s rock and never really goes anywhere for me
This is so...of its era. Not a fan of any of it. Homie has PIPES though
Not my thing. Sounds like Jack Black in School of Rock, but I’d rather listen to Jack.
Hilariously campy. I think it performs masculinity to such an extreme that it comes off super gay. The only good thing about this album for me is that it’s so closeted gay, sometimes the drums are fun. I’m going to be so sad and disappointed if this list is all mid white dad rock. This album was way less about music than a strange performance of 1980s masculinity and strange patriotism after the counter culture. It feels gross. It’s funny to me this is considered heavy metal. I just wanted him to shut up by the end of the album. I’m sure there are other lyrical or musical feats that I’m missing—but overall it’s stupid I looked up the history a bit and turns out the lead singer was gay and highly influenced by tom of Finland. Everything makes sense now. I appreciate the album better but I still hated listening to it
4/10

Ground breaking. A regular ass shovel getting stomped into dirt. Made a hole. Apparently there's another drummer.
This was alright, not super my vibe. Very 80s rock vibes
Loud heavy metal but some decent tunes
This sounds extremely dated to me. I guess you had to be there.
Pop version of heavy metal - all the bombast seems like a way just to get girls rather than being deeply felt and authentic. Some good grooves and hooks but not experiencing this a must-do listening
Not great, not terrible
Maybe I just don’t like rock and roll
Metal usually isn't my favorite genre, but this definitely slaps! The earlier metal is still good music instead of just noise.
OK. 2/5
Judas Priest is familiar to me only through one of my favourite Dylan tracks, the Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest off John Wesley Harding. British Steel was in the news recently when re-nationalised by the UK Government. That's probably the best way to have it. This album is just dull, I thought that every song sounded the same with no variation to be seen.
Meh but girls liked it. One or two bangers.
did not like
Not for me! I knew Breakin’ the Law which was fine, but I didn’t like anything else.
Very fun intro song. I liked rapid fire, but some of the songs looked very similar to me.
come dicono gli inglesi not my cup of tea 🍵
No interest in the "I'm so evil" guitar and singing metal style, so this is the first whole album I've listened to that I put in that bucket. It reinforced my prejudices, but I was surprised how little development any of these songs have - contrast with anything by Led Zep that all go on full and wild journeys - you can start on the first 30 seconds of any song then jump to anywhere else, and it's got the exact same tone and dynamics, all without the ease of modern looping.
Best Song: Rapid Fire Worst Song: Red White and Blue BESMERCHING the image of the 80s. Should be left in the past Went into this with very low expectations but was not quite as bad as I expected. Much too 80s campy for my liking. Some of the lyrics and added effects are very dated/cringey. In general I didn't find the lyricism interesting or impactful. I did enjoy the guitar riffs and the drumming; although it doesn't compete with other bands of the time . I don't like how the vocalist has the artificial gruff/rock voice affect. Judas Priest is ranked as one of the best heavy metals band, but I view Judas Priest to Back Sabbath what Nickelback is to Nirvanna/Pearl Jam -although more lacking in hits.
Kakva nostalgija 😁 treš, a opet na neki način toliko dobro 😄 2/5, 4.5/10
I think my issue with the new wave of heavy metal banks circa 1980 is the delivery, in that it is uniform and I lose interest. I can understand their fandom, but not for me. 1. Rapid Fire 2. Grinder 3. United
Breakin The Law is pretty cool but that's about as far as I go w these lads. Sorry, not my bag.
Not for me but the band can play
5/10 - a bit generic rock
not my style at all
Another legendary band that turned out to be disappointing just like Iron Maiden. Of all the songs, I quite enjoyed United.
Found it repetitive
I didn’t like this, but I did like Grinder. One extra star for Grinder.
Listening to "Breaking the Law" as I do my evening crosswords. This album bored me to tears. I immediately fired up Like A Prayer like some kind of musical chaser.
Not for me, but not unlistenable.
This album is the template for British heavy metal. Yowling vocals, pretentious lyrics, chugging guitar riffs with occasional outbreaks of wanky solos. All taken very seriously.
Not for me. But cool I guess. I liked one song a lot
Yeah not totally for me! Cool cover art though!
this sounds like spinal tap, but I prefer spinal tap.
fine
I don’t get anything out of this. Sounds cheesy Rating: 2.0
Ministry 2 days ago. This today. I just don't connect with hard rock and metal. At least there is some music on this. Jumps up to a 2 for Livin After Midnight.
Never been a huge JP fan. I enjoy the heavy metal moments but sometimes I feel like I'm listening to kiss
In 1980, when this album came out, there were just too many more interesting bands around for me to get into Priest. 45 years later, there are still too many much more interesting sounds out there.
Boring metal slop
A few caveats before my review. First is that in my summary on this site my least favorite genre is Metal. The metal albums with higher ratings are the ones that surprised me in some positive way. The second is that today is when Taylor Swift's new albums drops. I don't have time to listen to it till later today, and I try to do my album of the day on my morning drive so I can make sure to get it done. Taylor’s is the album/music I am in the mood for today, and when I saw this come up on the generator I let out a groan. With all of that being said, this record needed to truly blow me away and be well beyond my expectations in order to get a positive review. Sad to say, that did not happen. At all. It was exactly what I thought it was. I didn't even realize I knew a couple of the songs till they played, and those were never ones I liked in the first place. There is nothing horrible about this album. It didn't offend me or make me want to stop listening. But it wasn't enjoyable at all. And it wasn’t Taylor Swift. PS-Finally listened to The Life of a Showgirl and absolutely love it!
Metal
Could not be arsed with them. Not terrible, it's just that everything they ever done was done better by someone better.
Classic, but not my favorite.
not my genre At all but fine
I remember them on TOTP when I was about ten. Now they are favourites on Planet Rock. Just thd kind of heavy rock I can't stand. The lyrics especially are just so bad! Do they or any of their fans care what I think? Of course not, and nor should they 😀
80's metal isn't my thing
Maybe 1001 is too many?
An hour of the same riff
Bad
Living After Midnight is a legit great song. Breaking the Law is good. The rest was ahead of its time but I think because I heard so much that improved on this template that I think the whole album isn’t even average overall. But the hits are hits for sure.
Good lead vocals but …err.. cliched?
This kind of power metal is just not my cup of tea. What should get me going, is for me rather boring and repetitive. The attitudes are the audio equivalent of clumsiness. "Breaking the law" and "Grinder" are ok songs, but that's about it for me.
äh, jag gillar nog tidiga priest bättre.
I didn't actively hate it, but I also definitely didn't like it and wanted to get it over with. It just kind of shouts "I am an edgelord" at full blast and that permeates everything about this - right down to the animated album artwork my streaming service uses: dripping blood from a razor blade.
Not my scene
2/5 - it's not to say it's a bad album. But looking at the album cover I was expecting to get punk music. Instead I got dad/glam rock. Which is great music to some people, but it's genuinely my least favourite type of music I hate it so much. So, just because of personal taste this album was a struggle to get through to be honest.
Just not my style,
Actually better then Maiden, you guys are dumb.
Not for me.
Me senti num encontro de motoclube
Bah, was as I assumed. Just the type of rock I hate.
Fine album - just ok
A classic, of course, but JP never really grabbed me.
Iconic? Maybe. Painfully generic in 2025? Absolutely.
2.4
Finally had to admit to myself I'm just not going to get through it.
It’s got some classics but it’s not my style
Pas mon style
I will give it an extra point for 'breaking the law' because I sing that a lot and did not know it was Judas Priest.
Pedestrian music. Sophomoric lyrics. Rocks pretty hard, but does not move me at all.
See note on Black Sabbath: I think I was just exposed to jokes about this kind of music before hearing the music itself, and I can't un-hear those when I listen.
The album that made me a leather daddy.
I enjoyed a couple of the songs.
This is a weird one - I I liked all the songs individually but by the time I finished, I realized I didn’t really like the album.
Pah
My opinion of metal is much the same as my opinion of hip hop - it's fine, can be well made, but except for a few tracks it's not really for me. This is fine.
Not my usual go-to but I'm familiar with the album because Judas Priest was my ex-husband's favorite band. I didn't hate it, but not my thing.
I dunno. Don't get it, really. Why do they sound so American if they're British? I was just kinda put off by a number of the songs and lyrics, even if their style is cool.
who cares
It’s Heavy Metal for sure!
Cool guitar playing, but really cheesy as a whole.
Meh. This was just too much, it feels like 'try too hard' rock and I feel nothing from it.
1. fire - 1.5 2. metal - 1.5 3. lauu - 2 4. grinder - 1.5 5. united - 1 6. old - 1.5 7. midnight - 2 8. rage - 2 9. zteeler - 1.5 10. blue - 1
Not my cup of tea
This one wasn’t for me, but I can of course appreciate those who enjoy Judas Priest.
Pretty boring
Always considered JP second rate. This confirms it.
Some cool riffs and I know this is supposed to be an iconic band,.but I just couldn't get into it. I think it's the vocals that threw me off.
i really like the guitar and the music isn’t bad jsut not my thing
‘Breaking the law’ is a tuuuuune!
Tried to listen to this so many times but couldn’t get through it, not to my liking.
Very traditional rock, not my style but didn’t hate it
I had heard of Judas Priest but I’m Not big on heavy metal bands, especially those from the UK. When listening, I found that I knew one song that song was breaking the law. The album was good didn’t want to turn it off but I probably wouldn’t listen to it again.
I will preface this by saying I've heard a lot of Judas Priest's songs and most of them off of this album and Painkiller. And... I'm still not a huge fan of them even after 30+ years or so of listening to their songs. I do like Breaking the Law, and Grinder and United are decent, but the rest of the album is just repetitve and boring. 2/5.
Ujevnt
This wasn’t bad. Never listened to Judas Priest before, so was refreshing listening to something new. Enjoyed it but I don’t think it has much playback value for myself
Zelfde als MEtallica, moet je van houden
Break the law is definitely nostalgic from when I was a kid. Was a fairly enjoyable listen and Living after midnight is a classic. Probably a 2/5 for me
There are about two songs from Judas Priest that I really like, but neither are present on this disc. Strangely this is one of those cases where the whole is LESS than the sum of the parts. It's likely due to the songwriting where most of the songs seem like a parody of metal music, bordering on the silly or stupid. I give it a weak 2.
chanting breaking the law, breaking the law is funny otherwise I've got no use for this
Light sauce
To much, iets wat heftig
This album felt like it had two songs.
Boring and unremarkable metal. The one notable song is breaking the law which is only popular because it’s fucking stupid
metal
Summer bbq music but I wouldn't put this on by myself
Not my cup of tea, but just not the kind of music I'm into.
Cosplay.
I am sure that there are people out there who can make a compelling argument for this album. I am also sure that it, like this album will fall on my deaf ears. There is just no appeal for this kind of sonic and philosophical assault. Moving right along.
Not really my thing, but it was fine. Except that Red, White & Blue track. What the hell?
What the fuck is going ON
All hair metal bands sound the same, this one brought nothing new to the table 2*.
Not my style
I get that this is important to the genre and that they are super talented, but this is too safe a play & feels boring as the album goes on. I don’t hate it & there’s a few good songs here - there’s just nothing here that does anything for me. It’s largely just noise - repetitive beat, screeching guitar riff, back to repetitive beat. Where’s the passion guys??
Not my fav music to listen too but it wasn’t bad for heavy metal. Nice guitar riffs. Cool
It would have been interesting to hear this stuff with fresh ears, when it was evil and urgent, not campy. Highlight(s): The Rage Lowlight(s): United/You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise
Not a fan in the day, and still not. But worth listening to.
Not my thing, but I can respect the guitar solos
Pre-Metallica, mid-tempo heavy metal with low frequencies being cut and cliched vocals style.
Not for me. This is like old biker music and I found it a bit corny
Red, White & Blue moved this from a 4 to a 2.
Not my thing - but pretty rocking.
This is just one of my absolute least favorite genres. The 80s power/glam rock with screetching guitars and vocals. This album did seem to go by quickly at least but not one I'm going to pick up again. 4.25/10 (2.125/5)
Gotta be in a very particular mood. And not for very long.
The first chunk of this album is some pretty bland rock and roll. It's not really metal, imo. But the middle of the album turns things around. I still don't think I would label it as metal, personally. Hard rock for sure, but metal seems like a stretch. The album is very much a bell curve. The beginning and end are bad, boring, or both. There are some solid songs in there, but it's not a good album in total. Listen to the good songs and move on with your life. Favorite Song(s): Living After Midnight, The Rage
Not a fan of the genre but the reggae tinged song is fun.
Not really a fan
Pretty decent 80s power metal.
British steel: jerky metal with simple base lines and even simpler, very repetitive lyrics. Weak start then picks up with United, You Don’t Have to Be Old to be Wise (best song), and Living After Midnight - which combine for a worthy threefer. This and the album cover get Judas on the 1001 List. Red, White & Blue was a good finish, no need for Grinder - Live. L = (1.85s) J = (2.6s)
Some decent old school metal, checks all the boxes but gets a bit repetitive. Still a solid album, very good guitar work with sometimes cheesy (but authentic) lyrics thrown in. Middle of "Grinder" was good enough so don't need the live cut at the end. Better to finish on "Red, White & Blue" but overall a better listen than anticipated. 2.0 for being a little dated.
Some grungy metal. Not that great but credited as one of the foundations of the genre. I never really liked the hit "Breaking the Law" as much as so many do. It's fine but I think people like it more for the message. Over all I can't say the album was that enjoyable but I didn't suffer either. 1.65 stars.
British Steel- Judas Priest ||2/5⭐️ ༘˚⋆𐙚。⋆𖦹.✧˚ judas judas judas…. priest. what can i say about you❤️ very forgettable. and perhaps it’s because i didn’t do my usual method of write and listen but i just felt like most of these songs were. meh. good background noise for bio class tho. and maybe i’m being harsh and unfair but tbh i am not the biggest metal fan. stand out song: breaking the law
⭐️⭐️— — — 2[.4] of 5 stars. It has some iconic tracks on it, but the rest of the album starts to feel rather same-y as you listen. Love the guitar on the first track, and on “Breaking The Law,” but nothing else really stood out for me. Favourites: Rapid Fire⭐️, Breaking The Law.
I recently re-started using the gym at my office, and was reminded of the phenomenon wherein, the music in a predominantly "macho" environment is never what I expect. The 2010s weight rooms were always playing pseudo country era T-Swift. The high school football team would be bumping Nelly Furtado's first album. And now the weight room at work is playing slow K-Pop or something equally sleepy. Why is this? Why is it not Judas Priest? This is not my cup of tea, but god damn I'd rather have Judas Priest than anymore bubblegum ballads.
As I am neither a Beevis nor a Butthead this is not my cup of tea.
Cartoonishly simple music and overwrought lyrics. Most songs sound the same and the others are barroom anthems. Lead singer has pipes, but almost all lyrics are spoken rather than sung. Still, it’s better executed than i thought it would be.
Ehhh little too rocky.
Got a lot of respect for them as a band and for Rob Halford as a singer and individual but a lot of this is samey and I find the songs boring and dull for the most part. Some are ok though but to be honest I've overdone a lot of the songs in the past.
nope. not for me. I know this is like a proto-metallica. But man...I like metallica so much more than this...
I’m ok with a bit of hard rock but this went around two clear times and never remotely piqued my interest. Next.
I just think it sounds a bit 'wrong'?
basically just black sabbath but with little to no vocal talent
Not my bag
Just not my thing, Generic 80s metal. Might have been groundbreaking at the time but not in the context of todays music.
It was ok, but not great. I found myself wanting to skip past the tracks which all sounded pretty similar after a while
It's never good if I can tell with a degree of confidence that an album is from the 80s. Breaking the Law and Rapid Fire are cool. Living After Midnight and United are awful. A bunch of this album sounded too much like AC/DC for me.
Not sure what I expected from this but it’s basically cheesy rock with some laughably silly lyrics.
Yawn
🤘🏻😝🤘🏻 This is not my…jam. Lol get it? But I bet I could mow my lawn about twice as fast if I was listening to this.
Cool, would rather listen to paranoid though. "United" and "Red, White and Blue" are bad and boring.
Starts decent enough but like most metal from this era I simply find it interminably boring.
Två klassiska låtar ger två i betyg.
This wasn't bad. I can see the musicality and talent for the genre. Not my particular jam though. Higher than a 2 but not quite a 3 star.
Not my thing - though Breaking the Law was good.
Not my vibe but fun enough I guess. I find a lot of this type of early 80s heavy metal to be tedious, but I didn't mind it too much. Break the Law was fun but my god .... United and Red, White & Blue is bad. Not for me
bland, even breaking the law
I can see things to like, if you like this kind of thing. Band is tight, and the drummer has it down, and there are some good hard rock influences running through. But every heavy metal album is another reminder of how dumb, samey, adolescent amd portentous the genre is. Count me out.
So again we're saddled with a mediocre album from a niche band. I JP aren't necessarily niche but hair metal/Glam rock aren't for everyone. I prefer Doom over thrash so this didn't hit well with me. Real problem though is that fans of this band don't even have this record top 5 in the discography. Ham fisted beats and boring riffs.
