iron maiden + acdc + a bit of Dio = this forgettable mix
its ok, like 2.44444444
Nothing special here. This list does seem to have a bias toward 80's rock.
Honestly not the worst thing I’ve ever heard but didn’t feel like finishing it.
A bit dated Ynn
Living After Midnight Rapid Fire Red, White, and Blue
Was really looking forward to this one. But found it didn’t seem to age well.
Közepesen unalmas tatarock.
Awww yeah. I've never listened to this album before. Or really any Priest aside from "Breakin' the Law" which is silly but I get that it was an anthem of rebellion at the time. Although I'm guessing the band also probably thought it was silly. I would've recorded a silly "rebellion" tune and played it with a straight face at that age too because that's a great bit. Aaaaand... meh. It's kinda what I expected. Pre-Metallica, mid-tempo metal. The production is pretty bad. I'm guessing they were working with a limited budget and not everybody can afford to record with Mutt Lange in the Bahamas but like could the recording engineers have maybe not cut all the low frequencies out of the record? Later albums would see the band embrace the evolving styles of contemporary metal of the day and have access to much, much better production. Britisih Steel seems more like a curio, a peek at a genre that was still finding itself and a record that nobody would've cared about just a few years later. But they did it early enough that it helped define the decade to come.
decent. red white and blue was a bit wanky
There are some elements I like. But hair band music repels me and this is far too close for my liking
Meh...2/5
The stadium pop rock tracks pulled it down for me.
Horrible!! Could be worse
Not for me
Hair metal. Was okay, if that's what you're going for. Very standard.
This didn't do it for me in the same way that, say, Black Sabbath did. I found it a little plodding.
I went into this only knowing (and despising) the track “Breaking the Law”. Most of the album confirmed my assumption that Judas Priest was a pretty generic metal band, even for the late 70s early 80s. Their slower tracks felt like AC/DC stadium rock but without the heart (with the rock ballad “Red, White, and Blue” being downright bad). The two faster tracks “Rapid Fire” and “Steeler” were the only two tracks that felt better than okay, and even those felt like boring versions of Iron Maiden songs. Oh and I still hate “Breaking the Law”.
No me interesan y no me han atrapado
Although this is a heavy metal band, according to the Spotify 'About the Artist' section, I hear the punk rock elements that I can appreciate. The distorted guitar and riffs are pretty good. Despite this however I could not really get into any of the tracks. I am convinced this is more about me as a listener than it is about the band.
Cheesy.
More listenable than I expected but also more goofy
Not for me
Incredibly annoying. Very dated
It's not terrible I guess - I just don't like it. Probably cooler in the 80s
This mostly sounds, to a non-metal fan, like decent metal songs sung by a man attempting to sing while smoking a cigarette and being strangled. It does have Living After Midnight and Breaking the Law. If you think I have to like another Judad Priest song, then You've Got Another Thing Coming.
Ahhh I'm not a huge metal guy. I guess these guys were Pioneers of some sort. Rob Halford can sure scream though.
Not a huge fan. Breaking the law is a good track, kind of a reason it was a one hit wonder.
Before I started the 1001 Album project, I thought that heavy metal was all about hyper masculinity, dark symbolism and just loud in-your-face aggression. But now I understand that all of that is just a way of compensating for some of the cheesiest music you can imagine.
This album wasn't good. It felt really cheesy and overly dramatic. I didn't hate it enough to give it a "1", but it was a close call.
I can't... I can put this kind of music at the same level of rap expression...
Not my style. All the songs sound the same.
Not for me 2/5
Couple of songs that I knew but never will I be a heavy metal fan.
I expected this to be worse than it was. I know the band but it was just never my jam. Turns out to be not too bad.
Good rock noise. Loved hearing Breaking the Law but as ever, the rest didn’t do much for me
Of it's time, clearly influential but now very dated. Sounds like iron maiden, which is a bad thing. 2*
This was a bit uninspired for me tbh. Was hoping to like it a bit more than I did!
Лучшая песня - Breaking The Law.
Generic and same-y hard rock album. Not a huge fan.
A couple of hits, but otherwise unpleasant. They have better albums. Saw them live in 79. Head sufficiently banged.
Much imitated. Living after Midnight remains a solid tune. Rapid Fire and Steeler had good energy. Feels repetitive and formulaic now. Bet they were good to see live.
Not for me. A cross between Queen and 80s hair metal. I prefer the Beavis and Butthead version of Breaking the Law.
Album Already Known: N # Songs Already Known: 0 # Songs Saved: 0 Notes: not a big heavy metal fan lol, it's so goofy
80s Brit metal. Not the worst thing I’ve heard but not my thing. 2.5
It's OK, I have no real intention of listening to again, nothing inspiring
I listen to no heavy metal but I found this album much friendlier than what I normally think of when I think heavy metal. Has that 80s rock sound to it. It's a tight album, and Rob Halford has the kind of voice any band, not just a heavy metal one, would kill for. But, there's something about it that feels repetitive to my ears - might just be my lack of exposure to the genre.
Not a work sound track. It really made me feel agitated. I had to turn off. I think in another setting would be good album.
Heavy metal is really not my thing.
Metal is not my thing, but I can tell this is good.
The first two songs had me thinking this was Spinal Tap. I loves me some punk, but metal can often fall flat on me. This album did just that.
Judas F. Priest - Enough F. Said. ⭐⭐
the united song and red white and blue are both actually really good songs, i like them a lot, and i would rate them highly if i could, but i can’t and i didn’t care for the rest of the album tbh, so sadly even though those songs are a 4/5 the album can’t be… cool that they are british though, so many metal bands like that are assumed to be american.
Schon wieder metal.
Not a fan of heavy metal. Some songs better than others-those were not too bad. Definitely has that driving beat to most songs.
Not for me
I can see the impact the album had, and while the songs are generally fun, they're also quite similar and bland. In the context of the 1001 albums you must hear before you die, I'd argue this is one of the lesser 'important' ones.
too much screaming rock
Living After Midnight rocks, the rest was just OK.
I listened to it yesterday and I barely remember, I don't think it really hooked me.
Metal is not really my thing, but I remember when this was popular
I just don’t like late 70s/80s metal.
BREAKIN THE LAW BREAKIN THE LAW
Not for me. But giving an extra star for Halford.
Classic metal album but I’m not a fan.
I already suspected this but it really seems like metal is not for me. Love hard rock, love punk, but metal just..... comes off as silly, sorry.
not my cup of tea.
I get the influences these guys had on bands to follow them but this album is very beginner heavy metal. Overall the instrumentals chug along at a good pace but it's far to by the books and rigid. The two big singles from this album end up being generic party rock anthems that were probably edgier at the time of release but have since aged into corny & cringy.
Not bad for a genre I don’t care for
Not everything from the '80s needs to brought back. Sometimes what happened in the '80s should stay in the '80s.
Didn't quite click for me but the music was fun.
Judas Priest was never really my thing. The music is good but just not interesting to me.
At times on this I was even more sorry about being British than usual. Pulled it back with some solos in the 2nd half but dated and meh
I was familiar with the two popular songs: Breaking the Law and Living After Midnight. I'm impressed at how tight they sound in the live track: Grinder. But otherwise I'm not really into it, and don't really feel a desire to listen again.
Probably seemed edgy and transgressive in its day, but just feels... quaint... now.
I could hear the seeds of bands like G&R in here - but it mostly sounds really dated. Like, if this came out today, I'd think it was a parody band.
I don't think I'm ever in my life gonna think to myself; you know what I would like to listen to today? Some judas priest. So on that basis I'm feeling a solid 2.
It’s fine.
Meh is right.
If you like heavy metal then this album isn't for you.. this is the album where the legendary Judas Priest went commercial. Crap same same routines. I'm being generous giving this a score of 2.
I was having a good time, then United came on and really ruined the rest of the album for me. Still has some good stuff but I really hated that song man. Will I listen to again: 20%
Rock-by-numbers. Not really interesting, didn't find anything novel or exciting.
1980. At first I didn’t like it. Didn’t like the tempo and The loud treble sounds - snake and cymbals. I liked Breakin The Law. Not for me.
Not a big fan of metal these days, the album is solid AF, but my personal enjoyment level was the 2 star rating.
Listenable, not memorable
soft
Mieluummin kuuntelisin Iron Maidenia. Pidän Breaking the Lawista.
heavy metal? it doesn't seem to weigh that much? nah jk, this is pretty okay music -- did have a headache before starting 2,5* but let's round that down to 2 because of the horrible football stadium songs like United and Red, White & Blue
Okay, not really my thing though
I always thought it was hilarious when beavis and butthead did the “breakin the law breakin the law”
👎
Not a massive fan
That did not age very well.
All blends together
it was ok, listenable on the side but I just dont like hard rock that much. -A
It's classic heavy metal: so not really my cup of tea.
Oh dear. Nothing original here. A follow on band.
My least favourite part of the broad church that is Rock. Find it a bit cliched, especially the vocal style. Fairly one dimensional musically, although quite enjoyed a couple of the tracks, especially ‘You Don’t Have to Be Old to be Wise’. Thank God for that!
BREAKING THE LAW BREAKING THE LAW Cringe dad rock, the hook on united is a big highlight tho!
Not as bad as I thought, but still quite cringe! Definitely seems to have been a big influence on Iron Maiden and Metallica, but also seems to have been the direct inspiration for Spinal Tap. Wouldn't listen again.
Not as bad as i had thought. Breaking the law breaking the law
Oof, I have nothing against some heavy metal, but enough is enough. This album might take the prize for the most monotonous bass and drum line ever. It's just unbearable. I had a hard time trying to power through full song in one go. Even "Breaking The Law", track with a very nice riff, is so hard to be consumed, as it just slowly drills a hole in your brain, irreversibly destroying part of me. Big piece of metal history, but I'd rather forget about this part.
As a rock fan, I expected more out of this album. I’m sort of surprised this is the first time I’ve actually listened to the album and not just the singles, but I thought it would be “harder”. This is more radio friendly type rock. It’s ok. Listen again: probably not Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: Grinder
Ridiculous leather-clad lunacy. Very much in the same vein as Black Sabbath and , though Rob Halford's vocals are much stronger than Ozzy's - but the material is massively overblown nonsense, very similar to Iron Maiden.
Not my cup of tea but I can appreciate the guitar & drum playing!
2/5 Best: Breaking the Law Worst: United
Sounds so uncool now.
A hard album to review. I think it’s probably good for the genre and the time but not the genre for me.
Rachel and I agreed it "could be worse" as background music in the car but that's the only nice thing we had to say
This is about the 5th album I've heard on this list where my first thought is, "This must be the main inspiration for Spinal Tap!" Others include Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Metallica, and Aerosmith. Just basic hard rock riffs, growling vocal style, and inane lyrics. Not especially interesting or compelling to me. 2 stars.
meh, it's not my thing
Definitely not a heavy metal maniac🤘 I often found myself reaching for my phone to skip the song but alas I did listen to it all… LFS: United, Red White and Blue WIL2IA: 👎
Some hits but overall pretty tame. Not bad ass at all. Iron Maiden was way better.
Not sure if this will be an unpopular opinion, but I found the album a bit unremarkable. Some powerful sounds, but most of the tracks didn’t grab me. United and Red, White and Blue are very strange additions to this album.
Is it just me or do most of these songs have the lamest choruses ever? Throw in a couple songs that sound like failed attempts at anthems and this doesn’t age well at all, in my opinion.
🆗
Alright, let’s go rapid fire here. This album is great for working on a stripped screw for 45 minutes. You may not have to be old to be wise, but you do need to write better songs if you want to be good. Listening to United brought out the Rage in me. That’s gotta be the worst song ever written. Top 10 at least. The album is “saved” by a couple of their hits, but overall it’s so mediocre. Just like the band. Not a fan. Let’s just say that in my books, the are NOT Metal Gods.
Kind of a fun listen but I wouldn't go back to it. I'd call it mainstream metal? Which has kind of a weird vibe. Only song I actively disliked was United, the rest was pretty okay.
2 stars
I like hard rock from all decades, but the metal that emerged in the 80s never agreed with me. This sounds like it might be the daddy of them all. 3 stars for being a pioneer of a sub genre. -1 for being so fucking lame anyway.
Mostly tedious NWOBHM, but there are two or three standout tracks which would have made a great 7" single!
Generic hard rock. Minus one for that album cover.
The first song is a good up-tempo rocker with fast drums, which I like, and the quasi-radio friendly follow-ups are okay. The best I can say is that these guys aren't over-the-top parodies of heavy metal or too commercial. I find it interesting that under "Critical Reception" Wikipedia immediately jumps to the review by AllMusic, who weren't founded until 14 years after this LP was released.
Well this is a change from the bubble gum pop we've been receiving lately. At first it was refreshing to hear the driving jackhammer guitars and edgier vocals, but then they repeated it again.....and again...... and again. The only song that sounded different was United, but boy was that ever a clunker. This album has a lot of cliched guitar riffs and metal style vocals but I'll concede that if they were amongst the first groups to do this back in 1980 then they were actually innovative, so I'll give them an extra point for that.
Exactly what I expected. Not for me.
Better than I though it was going to be, still not very listenable for me though
I say, decent for a mid-tempo workout this. Went for a jog, ended up jay-walking during "Breaking the Law". Felt like a real tough nut, I did. 2 bobbys out of 5 👮🏼👮🏼
NWOBHM striked me as too uncomfortably close to glam metal. Too much bright, too pop, and too standard. And no, I'm not a metal purist who insist on making the genre edgy, extreme, and underground. I don't like this subgenre simply because it sucks. This album in particular sounds like AC/DC fans trying hard to sound like Queen (it IS inspired by AC/DC after all). Not something I would expect from the band who made "Painkiller". That song introduced me to this band. Everyone there was at their prime. Tiktok hit "Breaking the Law" on the other hand, while undeniably a banger, is a pretty soft hit. So... kudos for bringing NWOBHM into the mainstream, I guess?
Very mushy in my opinion. It don't hate it, but could go without it.
i hate metal. this was boring and uncreative
I like metal and I'm not sure if I'm just not feeling it this morning, but I'm not feeling this. Breaking the Law and Living After Midnight aside, a lot of the songs seemed to go on too long, even though they were only 4 minutes. I was getting bored and wanting the next one on after about 2. Good riffs and energy but just... not enough tunes.
Meh, found it a bit repetitive and annoying. A few catchy riffs, but... not for me
An album I'm not familiar with from a band that I have a basic knowledge of. The middle third of the album feels like nothing but filler. The first and final third are worthy of your time. In fact the final third is outstanding. There is protothrash here and moody sludge and radio friendly hair metal, pretty much the next ten years of hard rock radio laid out as a template for everyone to use. I think I would have included Screaming for Vengeance instead.
Nicht so mein Fall
A best of album would be better...
Boring. No.
Old people rock
Sabbath did it better.
Eh.
Ughhh I didn’t wanna shit on it but it did just feel very samey and like knockoff black sabbath (even if British steel came first idk). That being said it wasn’t awful, I did enjoy a few bangers such as breaking the law but in general I wasn’t hyped to listen…
Decent, not a band that ever clicked with me although I like some related bands
This is like the most boring pop music if it was metal. And I like pop music!
It was fun to hear the hit songs again. Half the album holds up pretty well, half suffers from poor songwriting. In the end, I did not need to hear this entire record. It is a cool album cover though.
Packed social sat? Lose to forest, hirschorn, sneak in to insta exhibit, bike home, light clean, walk about gt, chill with bryce, then to housewarming, decent, bike to monuments, braut
Not a fan. Weak metal.
I can’t with the cringe. “Breaking the law breaking the law!” Lol
Breaking the Law was ok.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: yeah, enjoyable dad rock but not mind blowing Favourite song: Track 5 - United
2/5 Classic rock album. Meh
Not my style of music.
Not my favorite type of music, but for being heavy metal it’s not all that bad. 4/10
I’m not a heavy metal maniac
GRINDEEEER Looking for meat. either there are so many things about judas priest and this album that are overtly gay or i need conversion therapy. I mean have you seen how they dress? it's like they found a book of stereotypes, saw the one for an attendee of a gay club and were convinced there and then that that was the look they should go for. i was under the impression they were a band for stonewashed jeans and black t shirt clad old men supping trooper down the local rock pub but on the basis of this album they seem more suited to the eurovision song contest. maybe the rock pub blokes are in to them for the weird flag shagger ode to britain. that shit is well strange, i suppose there was probably more to be proud of back in 1980 but its like some sort of shit that Walter Raleigh would have penned. then you've got a couple of songs that get loads of airplay. my confusion levels are off the charts with this one. good work, Rob, Glen and Kenneth.
How heavy does metal have to be to be heavy metal? There are much heavier metals than steel, though it remains undetermined whether British steel is heavier than other steel. Now an album called "British Tungsten," that would probably shred. But this is "British Steel" - not a particularly heavy metal in the greater scheme of things. Judas Priest may have a reputation as helping to build the foundation of heavy metal, but it only makes scant appearances on "British Steel." The first four tracks were heavy. But not all that good. There was a definite shift though, starting with the corny arena-rock anthem "United." "You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise" and "Living After Midnight" are also more of a blend of 70s arena rock and 80s hair metal. The album ends with "Red, White, & Blue," which might not have been on the original release? Who knew these lads wielding their British somewhat heavy metal were such American patriots? What's that you say? There are 43 countries with red, white, and blue in their flag? Ok, I stand corrected. Still kind of odd for some semi-heavy metal chaps to wax poetic in a goofy anthem about a flag. Anyway, that's all for this edition of "Fun With Flags." While Judas Priest may have failed to deliver sufficiently heavy metal during this sellout period of their career, at least they reminded me of this gem that I hadn't thought of in a while... https://c.tenor.com/FxcYgqxzmgMAAAAC/beavis-and-butthead-head-bang.gif
Nä det här var ju tråkigt. Heavy metal snarare heavy snoring haha förstår ni vad jag menar
Metal is dumb.
Some positive moments. But overall not my preference.
I do not typically like Heavy Metal and this isn't exactly a exception to that rule either. I understand Judas Priest's importance to metal as a whole and I am sure the metal I do enjoy was influenced by them. Also "Breaking the Law" is an all time classic. The album cover drops the slight thought of a 3 completely out of my mind and settles it as a 2 for me.
I heard a couple of their hits in my youth, but never really paid much attention to them. This album is...okay, I guess. I was mostly bored listening to it. It's quite reminiscent of other bands I do like, such as AC/DC, and, frankly, it sounded a little Spinal Tap-ish, too, but, I don't know, it just doesn't grab me nearly as much as AC/DC did and still does. It's not bad, per se, I'm just not interested.
Only giving it 2 stars as breaking the law remind me of beavis and butthead but generally bollox.
Classic heavy metal. Well made, but just not my thing.
I'm half-way through and it's a drag. Not awful but not my thing. Their hits are great but the secondary tracks just... aren't. Didn't add.
How many times have I seen this album cover and wondered if I'd like the music? I love that the project gave me cause to do so. Unfortunately the cover, while great, is way more enduring than the contents. Some of it, like United, and Wise, is so damn corny. It's a fun time but hardly fills the heart or head. The Rage was the song I enjoyed most.
Feels like if metal music was lazy.
Some decent guitar riffs, ok vocals. But is this album just one giant song? Not my fav genre of music. I don't like 80s metal.
Hm there are obviously a lot of reasons to love this and I can see why lots of people do. I'd probably give this more attention and do a proper review if I wasn't so jaded from all the insane amounts of heavy metal on this list. I'm just a bit fed up of heavy metal and I have absolutely run out of patience for it but I can see that it seems like quite a fun album!
Ew another heavy metal one I'm so annoyed. Like I said before I feel like this genre is overrepresented. Did not enjoy or care
Aggressively average
I get bored very easily with this type of music. It is no more than functional rock songs. The first song has great drumming, though.
Not good
Mwah. Alleen breaking the law is leuk, herinneringen bravo’s and buthead
A lot more cheese than I was expecting
Their weakest album tbh
* I Didn't hate it, but it's not for me. 1.5
Not bad but not memorable. Breaking the Law still rocks.
Good enough to create Spinal Tap, for which we are truly grateful.
Not my cup of tea
I get that this album was influential to other bands but I do not get the appeal. The songs have too similar structures. The vocals and instrumentation are not appealing to me.
Meh, bland big area rock/metal. Kinda like a less interesting Aerosmith
Nope this album just ain't for me. 2 🌟
Not a fan. Breaking the Law is OK.
A bit pedestrian I thought - I don't mind metal, but this wasn't for me
Living After Midnight is a solid 80s rock anthem, but this whole album is pretty "okay" - and that's it. Nothing about JP really stands out to me. And I hate how the drums were recorded.
Tråkig hårdrock
Yeah, yeah... Can't say I didn't enjoy it at times.
It's al right, but too much metal for me.
Heavy metal ain't my bag
brexit
Mid to low range beer drinking stadium metal. Steeler was a tune but
I have a bit of an allergy to metal, even if Breaking the Law was a Beavis & Butthead hit.
Heavy dude! Just not my cup of tea, really - it all seems just a bit silly.
I'm not a big fan of how choppy their voice is. Sure its pretty popular but I wouldn't find myself listening to it.
OK, old style metal, didnt realise they did Breaking the Law
Still not a big fan of metal.
Comunque "You Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise" me ricorda una canzone di uno stage di Mega Man X (Storm Eagle), o Tough Boy di Hokuto no Ken, e l'assolo di Rapid Fire sembra uno dei suoni standard che fanno le pistole giocattolo del cinese. The Rage s'è guadagnata il cuoricino su Spotify.
no te voy a engañar no me lo he escuchado no me va demasiado el metal
Metal
Not really my thing but good fun nonetheless.
It doesn’t sound bad, but I really don’t like this style of music.
It's just that heavy metal isn't my thing. I listened to it, and for metal, its cool. fav. song: breaking the law, i guess
A competent album from an artist I have no interest in re-visiting.
Hasn’t aged at all well - some nice guitar work - metal for 12 year olds - nothing wrong with that
Not my type of music but not the worst
I like seeing people have fun. They obviously are. It’s a fun album.
Just not my cup of tea at all.
As soon as I saw that it was Judas Priest I got a little PTSD from a rough childhood experience; since I am on a different journey in my life where I am trying to embrace things that I didn’t like before, I decided to give the whole album a chance. I did and a few of the song still just don’t resonate with me but I did like the songs united and the ringer. I definitely don’t see myself ever listening to Judas Priest again though :-)
It’s like hard rock except everyone sucks at their instrument so they try to lay down grooves that just suck. 4
I liked this a bit more than black sabbath but still not my thing
not my style
palatable
This was supposed to be my review for Prodigy (did not listen to Judas Priest): mmb-sss-mmb-sss-mmmb-ssss dance music. Wasn’t as into it when it came out as I am into this style now. Clearly an influential album. A lot heavier/more metal than like Fatboy slim or Moby (real or fake moby). Lots of these tracks could still come out today and be played, and they’re 20+ years old. That’s says something. I like a lot of this, some isn’t my style. Firestarter makes me laugh picturing the guy in the video. Not a great song. But the first tracks on the album still slap.
too much of the same thing
Not my genre. Tuned out.
It was okay. Not bad, but heavy in parts for my tastes. didn't have the catchy riffs etc which ac/dc has.
4
Feeling pretty much the same about this as Black Sabbath. Instrumentals are impressive but vocals...not so much. Metal just isn't my vibe
Judas Priest on aika oman aikansa peruskauraa ja Black Sabbathiin verrattuna eivät kyllä pärjänneet. Iha ok.
Saved? ❌ Would listen again? ❌ Would recommend to anyone? ❌ Would buy on Vinyl? ❌
nah
Six tracks in and I'm bored to shit. No thanks 1/5
Did not enjoy it at all. The production is very mechanical and synthetic and the vocals sound flat as fuck. The start is bearable but then it switches into cheesy dad metal. I know they can do better.
Number: 130 Date: 05/13/2026 Artist: Judas Priest Album: British Steel Year: 1980 Style: Metal Familiarity: Familiar (2) Rating: 1 Before: ======= Don't know much about Judas Priest. I was never into metal, The most metal band I used to listen to is Ministry. During: ======= I had to skip through most of this. I do remember “Breaking the Law” but I think that song could be so much better. The version on the album is kind of lame., imo. 2 Rapid Fire 4:07 1 Metal Gods 3:58 2 Breaking The Law 2:34 1 Grinder 3:56 1 United 3:31 2 You Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise 5:03 2 Living After Midnight 3:30 1 The Rage 4:43 1 Steeler 4:28 ----------------------------------------------------- 1.43 WEIGHTED AVERAGE (accounts for song lengths) After : ======= As I said, I don't like metal. I'm giving it a decent score for suitability and impact though I really don't have clue about that, just basing it on reviews I've read. 1 my personal rating 5 suitability for this list 4 impact ----------------------------------------------- 3.3 composite rating
Oooh look at us we're Judas Priest we use religious imagery and put razor blades on our album covers. Ooh look at us we're Judas Priest we use a double kick drum, of course we're metal. I am so incredibly bored by this glam rock-ified approach to heavy rock music. It dictionaries included sonic entries as definitions, this album would be the use case for "sell out". This album is lazy, uninspired, and has aged horribly. Not only could you go your whole life without listening to it, you could probably go 10,000 lives without listening to it. Hell, Spinal Tap makes better music than this album, and they are a parody of this very music. One star. Favorite track: none
no just no! add them to my list w deep purple
I am aware of the existence of Judas Priest. This came out when I was in high school - but I never really got into them at the time nor since. I'm sure the only songs I've ever heard from them would have been their radio singles - but I never once just sat and listened to this or any of their other albums front to back. So here goes... Ok, I vaguely remember the songs "Living After Midnight" and "Breaking the Law". I thought they were kinda dumb songs at the time. I guess that's why I never dug deeper. I just noticed that part of the vocals on "Breaking The Law" sounds like David Bowie. I can see how Metallica took some of their shtick from this. The growls at the end of each line for example. Also, the song "Rapid Fire" kind of sounds like Metallica (to my non-metal head ears). I just don't get into most heavy metal. It just seems stupid to me. I'm sure that's a me problem since I know lots of people love this stuff. It just feels like fake anger and that they are just posing as rebellion. Oh my gosh, you're staying up past midnight and rocking until the dawn - such a rebel. What will your parents think?? And now you're Breaking the Law - oh no - what are we gonna do with this wild child?? Haha! Funny reading that the movie Spinal Tap was spoofing this somewhat - I was the kid that loved Spinal Tap (I used to, but I still do too) for making fun of this kind of stuff. Tap is a better band than these guys. There I said it, and I don't care who disagrees. I went back and looked - in 1980 I was spending more time listening to groups like The Police, Pretenders, Cars, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, Springsteen, The Kinks. These are all artists I still like. Judas Priest just didn't interest me at the time, and still doesn't apparently. I don't need to hear any of this again. Liked songs on Spotify: 0/11 Rating: 1/5 (should be zero)
Not for me
Awful, one dimensional bad metal
Meh
Nah, just slop
Not for me
How could anyone actually like this?
Shite, metal, shite
Almost nothing from this era of heavy metal is worth listening to.
не моё
si me siguen haciendo escuchar metal me voy a retirar.
Amazing album!
2/10
I’m learning things about myself. Namely, I do not like heavy metal.
Just can't handle 80's metal these days. I appreciate that it was ground breaking for it's time but it does not serve me at all.
Teatralsk og show-off.
Look kinda hiphopie. Uhm i tried buttuh i don’t like it😣
No me gusta este tipo de musica
I didn't like it
TOO MUCH ENERGY
eh metal işte 👎
Not for me
Shite
Ich hasse metal 1/5
Not my thing
Surprising how unheavy early heavy metal is today. Loses a full star for the patriotic song.
I‘d rather listen to Motorhead. Really
not a fan, this genre just isn't for me😔
fuck that
Caught myself enjoying this in a couple of fleeting moments. Rollicked along nicely in places. Any hope of the second star was dashed by the final track though, what the hell was that all about it.
High 1 I wasn't in the mood
I kinda liked United but mostly not my thing. :-/ Judas Priest has some nice album covers tho.
Imagine you're away on holidays. It's evening time and you fancy a drink, but there aren't too many options in the area you're in. You hedge your bets, and pop into a grimy pub full of locals. The walls have dusty posters of Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper and Iron Maiden. The beer is watery, but cheap. It'll do, I guess. Then you see a handwritten sign on a blackboard behind the bar. "Live music at 9pm". You look at your watch. It reads 9:04pm. This could go either way. A group hop up on the stage area to a handful of claps. Big hair, clad in leather and denim, they start to play. But you can't figure out what they're playing. It's like they're a Van Halen or an AC/DC tribute band, but the songs they're playing aren't Van Halen and certainly aren't AC/DC. It's like they didn't have the rights to perform the real songs, so they just made their own versions to avoid copyright infringement. You drink up as quickly as you can. That's how this album feels. Like Judas Priest were trying to perform Van Halen and AC/DC songs, but it all lacks substance, originality and ends up sounding like a bad tribute band, playing their own versions of other people's music.
Oof, fair few guitar riffs that still work and the drums don't miss, but it ain't my bag.
Yeah whatever
I just don't like metal :(
*no music. Screaming vocals and banging instruments.
I'm being overly harsh but I don't want to listen to this album again. It's not interesting. It sounds so generic. It's not entertaining. Sometimes it's decent, but other times the lyrics and singing just make you frown. This genre can be so much better.
That one called Breaking the Law has 3820000 plays on Spotify, I think Nietzsche put is best when he said "say what?" So I listened to tracks 1-3-5-7-9 just to see if there was anything beyond Spinal Tap and Some Kind of Monster. There is not. Goodnight and all the best to you all.
Boring. Pretentious.
Does absolutely zero for me. Objectively it’s probably not terrible given their longevity and all. But this is the type of so-called metal that I really don’t enjoy.
Hui abfahre. Weeeg demit. Monday morning, i can not handle. Aber wärs es 2 oder es 1
Nope
No.
Punk patriotic in the worst way
Unlistenable. I don't know why people like it.
i can’t think about the fact that people sincerely consider this good music for too long or i will actually get angry. just looking at the comments on youtube makes me want to throw up.
i don't know what else to say in these heavy metal album reviews. it's not good.
This is everything that I dislike in a metal record. It’s like Rob Halford sat down one day and decided to write the cheesiest bullshit imaginable and call it metal. I struggled my way through the 10 studio recordings here, but there’s no way in hell I’m going to listen to the live tracks that Apple Music is offering. If I never hear another Judas Priest song, it will be far far too soon. Yuck.
Absolutely asinine. If this is what the new wave had in store, they should’ve let British heavy metal die with dignity. Meaningless lyrics and boring, predictable, uninspired guitar hooks. Hard to overstate how little I enjoyed this album.
KILL ME NOW -♾️/5
not my music at all. im a little annoyed by it. cant believe i listened to all of that.
Okay Judas Priest, what do ya got. Wondering if we got another "1-star" rating coming down the pipe from me. What are we singing about? Laser beams and axes and robots? God damn I hate this kinda shit hahaha. Breaking the law? Yeah, breaking the law is pretty cool. Singing a silly little song about breaking the law, though? Dorky beyond measure. Living After Midnight > United > Grinder > Steeler > Breaking the Law > Metal Gods > The Rage > Rapid Fire > You Don't Have to Be Old to be Wise Living After Midnight maybe the most I can stand of these, I like that it's poppy and catchy and lyrics a little less annoying, but it's still doesn't quite push the album to a 2.
Not my thing by a long shot. If people enjoy this, great.
Niet geluisterd geen fan
Not my kind of mudic
Never been a fan of this type of metal. I like Breaking The Law but only as a punch line when I do something I shouldn’t.
Not even me remembering fondly my adolescent self running around screaming "Breaking the Law, Breaking the Law" a la Beavis and Butthead could save this album. It was terrible.
Wasn’t great when released either.
Didn’t enjoy, didn’t even finish, sorry JP
Noped out of this one in the first track. Currently I'm bedridden with abdominal pain, so suffering through metal is a hard no.
No juju
Yeah. Not for me. This is just so overdramatic
