Reviews (page 3 of 6)

This is my first time listening to a Girls Against Boys album. I'm familiar with their single "Super-Fire" from another album, so I sort of know what I'm getting into here. This is interesting, but a little uneven. Some tracks have an undeniable groove, other tracks are mostly forgettable. It's like the answer to the question: "What if The Fall was a little better and more listenable?"

Grubby.

Listening session: march 21th, while getting ready and making lunch Listened to before: no Thoughts: great band name and okay music, but nothing too memorable Favourite tracks: Go Be Delighted & Let Me Come Back

Never heard of them before. With a few exceptions, not quite what I like, but damn close.

I love the sound of this album, it’s heavy and brutal and the guitar tones are great. Unfortunately the songs don’t quite reach the same level as the sound but I still enjoyed listening to this.

un poco repetitivo. ha habido alguna guay pero

Noise that was fine but I largely turned my mind off for

First I’ve heard of them and reviews not filling me with confidence. Let’s see… Kind of Marilyn Manson vibes somehow and whilst I listened to it whilst I was doing other things, I wasn’t particular captures or impressed. Feels a bit whiney, edgy and goth. Didn’t really do anything for me 3*

Instrumentals 4 Production 3 Vocals 2 Would love if it was a little softer

Not too bad

I thought this was fine. Don’t really feel one way or the other about it

First track was promising. But not sure a lot else matched up to it. Dirty dark rock. Let Me Come Back reminded me of Viagra Boys - so that was good. Bullet Proof Cupid also decent - a bit Sonic Youthy. And 7 Seas also ok. 1993 - yet not on my radar or forgotten. 3.2

I liked this from Get Down onwards. Probably not that original and groundbreaking but enough to raise it over half marks just

I don’t like shouty American rock so this really did start off on the wrong foot I was looking nailed on for a two star review. However, as the album progressed some less shouty tracks came to the fore and I began to take a shine to it. By halfway through it had scraped into the threes, by the end it was a solid to upper three which demanded more of my attention than I had initially been willing to offer. Couldn’t help hearing this band as a big influence on some of Blur’s output in the late 90s

Way better than I expected. I remember these guys from back in the day. Probably the only DC punk band from the '80s and '90s to not be on discord records.... I wasn't really into punk then so I didn't check them out but a guy I worked with at the record store was into them. I think he had them play at our local VFW... Anyway, pretty good!

This album is a nice surprise, by a band I'd never heard of, music I'm pretty sure I've never heard before, and a style that improves (subtly, perhaps) on the likes of Fugazi or Mudhoney or Dinosaur Jr and their ilk. I think what I like more than anything is that they actually carry a tune and beat, yet also still rock pretty hard, although they could have probably worked on making the vocals a little clearer and less muddy-/thrash-sounding. I particularly enjoyed the first half of the album, especially "In like Flynn", "Rockets are red" and "Satin down", while the second half tended to get a bit too far into the indie weeds for my tastes (although "Bullet proof Cupid" and "Bughouse" picked things up a bit). I'm not sure I'll likely revisit this album much, or perhaps ever, but I'm glad it was included in the collection, and I'm glad I got a chance to hear them.

When I was looking at this album’s review page and saw Noise Rock as its first genre, I sort of rolled my eyes because the noise albums I’ve gotten so far have all ranked fairly lowly. This one feels a bit different to the rest, though, it’s a decent amount more melodic and that seems to be enough to make me enjoy it. • The main riff in Rockets Are Red reminds me of Silverchair, specifically something like Slave which would’ve come out a few years after this album • I like Let Me Come Back, it’s another song that reminds me of some other bands that I listen to. • Learned It’s really cool, it sounds very different to the rest of the album so far • I can get behind 7 Seas too, the more melodic songs have pretty consistently been my favourites from this album As far as these noise rock albums have gone, this was easily my favourite so far. It wasn’t as noisy as the others, and had some really good melodies mixed in. I didn’t love every song, but I thought this was a good album Favourite song: Let Me Come Back

151/1001 First listen. Never heard of these guys. No song sticks out more than any other. Nothing memorable here but I really like their sound. I’m going to listen again. I want to like this. 5/10

Not generally a fan of this kind of 90s alt. rock, but I can respect it. "Satin Down" feels like a weird Iggy Pop/Stooges outtake to me at times, which is the only standout moment I can remember after repeated listens. 7/10.

pool bar ambiance

The 90s grunge/rock/pop prototype album - in every way

Zone out a fair bit. It's aight

This record was okay. The relentless agro I could probably do without. I'd rather listen to Fugazi or Shellac for that kinda vibe. Good sounding record though for a hard rocker.

I kinda love when this website gives me the super obscure stuff. I did not expect to like this, but I did!

Some cool bits, some cringey bits? I don’t even know what to think.

Highlights: - Learned it - I'm such a sucker for this basic shoegazy low guitars - Bullet Proof Cupid - see above but MORE. I could be convinced this is a Sonic Youth song. Never heard of these guys I thought the band name was funny though and I am excited because it's noise rock. The first half I had high hopes and enjoyed the 1st song, it quickly got repetitive and grating however and I wasn't a fan of the singer's voice. The instrumentation still had some cool moments. The album seems to hit it's stride with "Learned it" and from that point on the album starts dramatically improving, the repetitive riffs get layered and stop repeating so frequently. "Get Down" was also a nice pleasant song to break up the hardcore album. High 3 - almost a 4 it's just too repetitive and the first half drags it down

Fine enough. I could acquire this taste.

This album was really all over the place. Was it a metal album? Was it a punk album? Was it more of a straight rock album? It didn't seem to know and I don't really know what to do with it. 5/10

I wonder if I had heard this in the 90s that I would have liked it a bit more. But quite honestly, it was just a bit loud and to me, sounded a little too of the time and quite frankly other artists did it better (5.8) ★★½

Thought this album was pretty solid. Much like Fugazi, it's sort of a post-Hardcore sound that incorporates some of the 90s alt-rock sounds of the day. "Bulletproof Cupid" and "Rockets are Red" were cool. 3.5 stars.

Cool sludgy 90s alt-rock even though I was expecting some actual girls to be singing on this. And the boy singer to sound not quite so like an infinite swarm of Doom minions getting shot. Drums are great, very Bonhamish. Guitars are great, a bit Pearl Jammish but cooler and nastier. Maybe spiked with a bit of RATM. There are some cool rocking highlights with Let Me Come Back and Bullet Proof Cupid. Best moments on the album also have hints of Joy Division in heavy mode à la Twenty Four Hours and Dead Souls. Album title also sounds like something Scritti Politti would come up with if they were a sludgy 90s alt rock band. Overall probably not essential but still lots to like. A lux 3.5.

A good album for a road trip if you're not planning to listen too carefully 2.6

Really difficult to place. I found myself sometimes really getting into it and sometimes feeling like it really didn't hit. Would like to give it another go o

Surprisingly into this one. Maybe it was the fact that I was working on the treadmill at my desk but the energy was good enough to almost get me to a 4. The vocals started wearing on me though

top 3 - Rockets Are Red, Get Down, Billy’s One Step. It’s alright, no track in particular stands out that much in my opinion which makes it forgettable to me. I wouldn’t complain if it was put on though.

It's fine Probably won't listen to it again Dissonant and raw, Venus Luxure bleeds and burns, Noisy punk rebirth.

This was alright. I've been listening to all these albums on my work headset which has terrible audio quality so I feel like I'm not getting the most out of them

This was better and noisier than i expected. Liked the overall sound but it kind of all sounded the same. Should have another listen.

Definitely 90s indie rock, in a good way

A little samey, but there was some cool stuff in here that I enjoyed.

Standouts In Like Flynn Let Me Come Back

I like the cover

Some pleasant noise for the background. Doet me een beetje aan Deftones denken. Perfecte muziek om te disassociaten. Moet ff nog een keertje luisteren om likes te vinden

Not a fan particularly.

Fine, but not particularly more memorable than anything else of this age

One of those albums that isn't bad but you're like, why the fuck is it on the list???? 3/5

Some good grungy guitar work and I enjoyed a number of the tracks on this album

Interesting but not much more.

It’s quite alright - kind of a grungy/dark version of Sonic Youth and sometimes the Cure.

Was definitely feeling that vibe yesterday. Don't know if it's a frequent listen or not.

I enjoyed this - influences and sound bites from across my music history - nice!

Not a bad album. A lot of this sounded the same. 3/5

This was fine, but nothing I'll seek out

it's 3.5

I like the sounds of this one overall but not much stood out in particular. Good vibe.

Ok, ikke nå æ kommer til å høre mye på fremover men

Wasn't so bad, maybe lacked a little depth but I found my way around 12/1/26

Average album that sounded like lots of other stuff

Heroin and this album goes hard

This was pretty good. I didn't always totally love the singer's voice, but the instruments were my cup of tea. The standout track for me was Let Me Come Back. A high three.

I don’t know how to feel about this album

Rocking’!

Strong interesting heavy rock. Nothing stood out but nothing bored me either.

Pretty good, not something I would usually reach for. kinda reminds me of The Garden, Puzzle, and every other side project that the Shears twins have done. the album feels like it goes on forever but its probably because of the slower nature of the songs

Fine. I think some friends of friends in high school were into this band, but their music never grabbed me when I was exposed to it back then. Still holds true now. I like some music like this (e.g. The Jesus Lizard) but not these folks for some reason.

Nytt band for meg. Groovy og ikke alt for hard post-hardcore/alt-rock. Ikke så langt fra det jeg vil kalle min musikksmak. Her er det likevel forbedringspotensial, da det er vanskelig å skille de ulike låtene fra hverandre. Top 3: Rockets Are Red, Let Me Come Back, Bullet Proof Cupid

Great music. This would be even better if the vocals were clearer. I'm sure the point is to not have the vocals clear in a hardcore sort of way. This reminded of bands on Matador and Sub Pop that nobody has ever heard of because although they might have great music they can't write songs that have hooks and don't get the promotion of the larger labels. I'm sure that this is the exact music it's intended to be... not popular and not clear. I fully expected this to be a grunge band from the 90's that didn't get popular but they're from DC (or NY). Dave Grohl probably stole some of their ideas for songs like White Limo and Weenie Beenie. Songs like that are fine but a whole album of vocals that are hard to hear is too much.

Not bad

Some super solid post-hardcore, didn’t push over the edge of being great for me but will prob revisit this!

I enjoyed this one but it didn't blow me away. Vocals were reminiscent of Trent Reznor. Music was good.

Never heard of this band but I found it was surprisingly good grunge. Nice dark guitar tones, powerful drums, and a cool vocal tone too. It reminds me a bit of Sonic Youth and drones a little like post-rock, which is a combination that hits some interest points for me. I dig it and will definitely give it another spin.

6/10 Favourite: Rockets Are Red Least Favourite: Bug House

Pretty good, again something I’d have enjoyed more in my youth or teenage years

I went in totally blind on this one, folks. I’d heard the name, but had no idea what era we were in or what genre. Turns out this album came out in 1993 and was the second album by Girls Against Boys. Wikipedia refers to GAB as post-hardcore, but I'm not sure I understand what that is. I guess there’s punk, then hardcore music, then after hardcore? GAB was formed in Washington, D.C., which I believe is a hub of the hardcore/punk scene, with Minor Threat as the big dog. An early version of GAB featured a member of the band Fugazi, which is also a post-hardcore band. I don’t know, let’s get into what I heard. I liked the album alright, but I’m not sure what there is about it that makes it special. Maybe I’m missing that gene. I was never into hardcore or punk until my later years, and there’s still a lot more I dislike than like. GAB sounds like a '90s band that would get played on MTV’s 120 Minutes, if it got on MTV at all. I'd call the music more hard rock with a 90s grunge sheen. Many of the songs are just noise, but that isn’t altogether unpleasant. It’s heavy, but not like metal. The vocals on most songs have an effect of some sort on them, which is pretty cool. I’m not sure the vocalist is trying to be Pavarotti anyway. The songs are just scummy, simple songs with loud guitars. I’ve probably heard a dozen albums like Venus Luxore in my time. In the short time I spent with this album, I couldn’t figure out what made this must hear before you die. It didn’t light a fire in me or anything. But, as we all know, art is subjective. This may be your favorite album, and you’ve never heard it. If you’re a fan of post-hardcore or just a scuzzy '90s rock sound, I think you’ll probably dig this more than I did.

in like flynn- call me crazy but i was kinda hoping a band called girls against boys was gonna be an all girls band but i suppose we cant all get what we want. 5 go be delighted- 5 rockets are red- 5 satin down- 4 let me come back- 4 learned it- 4 get down- 4 bullet proof cupid- 4 7 seas- 4 billys one stop- 4 bughouse- 4 mid

It's an ok album. I like the distortion in it, it adds a touch of rawness to it. I will say that it's a little repetitive at times, like they try to add their own little spin to each song, either it be weird dissonant guitar notes or piano, but it does kinda feel more like mush the farther you get through it. 6/10

enjoyed it for the most part. kinda mid. nothing really that good or that bad about it. standout tracks: learned it, get down, bullet proof cupid

I had to listen to this album a couple times to get it, but I’m glad I did. The vocals remind me of Dinosaur Jr. and I like how they play with dynamics. Favorite songs were Rockets are Red, Let Me Come Back, Learned It, and 7 Seas.

A few nice riffs are liberally scattered through the tracks on this album, but other than that, I found it to be instantly forgettable. I wouldn't mind listening to it again if somebody persuaded me, but I certainly wouldn't seek it out.

Couple of standout tracks but mostly plods along at a chugging pace. Didn't grab my attention massively.

Interesting

Could be 4* will have to listen again

GAB sounds a bit like harder Nirvana or Bush. I like the thrashy, industrial sound they have but I wish I could understand the singer more. Songs tend to blur together with consistent formula used throughout. Top track is "Learned It" with "Go Be Delighted," "Come Down" and "Bullet Proof Cupid" good supporters. Venus Luxure may not be No. 1 on my list Baby but it's a decent dark rock album. I will look into more by the band. 2.8 stars for getting In Like Flynn on the 1001 list.

It’s indie rock and roll for me. But not that strongly. In fact, I could live without it.

Hardcore 90’s rock. Pretty good, but nothing really standout

I like the rawness and punchyness of this, I just feel like it could use a bit of variation since it does start to feel a bit repetitive pretty quickly.

Nothing to say here. Easily forgettable album. Reminds me a bit of radiohead but less annoying !! 2.5

Nothing mindblowing but some cool, heavy riffs. 2.5

Noisy and fun, but not really top 1001, I would say.

This was a great listen. Not sure I buy the 'American Fall' claims, but there are tunes, a great groove and a general motorik vibe that not much American music gets. Strong 3.5. Way better than most early-90s 'alternative rock' choices on this list.

Bounced between a 2 and a 4. I doubt I'll listen again but can see how this would have been very influential.

I hear more of a Phil Anselmo trying to be quiet a library then a Mark E Smith (referring to the Spotify description.) Very 90s, grungy post-hardcore Rockets are Red has some cool riff Let me come back is pretty engaging. Bass sounds awesome Some fugazi esque guitar in learned it Reminds me a little of bands like KING 810 and Nu Metal stuff, but more subdued and a bit less cringy for sure. Bullet Proof Cupid is the most played song on their spotify, the chorus is very effective, the constant distortion engulfing the track is quite nice. I don't love it but it's goood. This one and Let me come back I like the most as of now Hu uh 7 seas sounds very cool by moment and relaxed, the chorus is wacky tho not sure I like it Was worried it was gonna be too grunge but it's not bad, the production is nice

new. good

Fine rock-ish music. Just unmemorable to me but not bad or offensive to my tastes.

Decent background metal. Like the genre, don't much remember the songs.

Listened Before? N A pretty decent alt rock album. Nothing that stood out too much here but I didn't hate it. Could listen to this one again. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Bullet Proof Cupid

not a bad album, definite 90s sound. reminds me a bit of Sonic Youth

Another one for the 'wanted to like it more than I did' pile. There's a definite vibe with the two basses - they give off a great, sleazy, grinding impression - but it isn't backed up with any memorable songs. I listened to their album Freak*On*Ica quite a bit in the early 2000s and had heard this was their best album, but not much beyond the vibes. That said, still 3 stars, because WHAT a vibe.

Second album by a band I have never heard of. I didn’t really mind this although the vocals are low in the mix, I quite liked their style. This album is labelled post hardcore which apparently means it is punk but more creative, and I get that. However, I kept thinking it sounded a bit like Pavement if Pavement were rubbish. Obviously my three stars is generously given… especially as this band makes the Pixies look good.

I didn't mind this album, pretty raw and some nice chunky riffs. Haven't heard of these dudes, I'm sure ill give another listen!

Can’t say I’d heard of these before. So obvs surprised by them. They’ve a new listener now.

A full and fruity palate with lingering notes of Motorhead, and a hint of Marilyn Manson, but without the balls and the speed (both sorts of speed in the case of Motorhead). And I can detect a full-bodied influence on Muse. I think I'll finish the bottle. 3

I didn’t mind it. Sounded a bit derivative but wasn’t horrible. I could easily go 2.5 but gets a bump from reminding me how much I love Sisters of Mercy.

distorted vocals, muddled guitars, driving rhythms. this album was an adventure, for sure. highlights: “rockets are red” “bulletproof cupid” “billy’s one stop”

Did not fall into entirely into the grunge ethos of the early 90s. Sounds a bit like Sonic Youth lite. Could see myself giving this more listening time.

Based on the name of the band I was expecting some cool riot qirl band or something but that's not what this is. Not even a female vocalist... Oh well still pretty decent alt rock album Favorite track: Bullet Proof Cupid

I like this, but I suspect the 1001 community will not

Hmm. Was ok

Quite liked the sound of some of the songs on this album which is just as well as I don’t have a clue what the chap was singing.

Not feeling this today, and I know they have better albums. S’ok.

I actually thought this album came out in the late 90s. I don’t love this style of alt rock but give them points for being early to the sound. Fav song was Bughouse

such easy listening for me, but did not stand out in any miraculous way.

kinda cool Fav song: Bughouse

It’s a long way from essential but I found myself quite liking this despite myself Bulletproof Cupid is decent Can’t imagine listening to it again but I didn’t mind it at all. A very low 3 but it’s alright

Would not buy.

Album nakon ovog mi je bolji standard noise rock tog vremena

When I was first exposed to indie music, I learned about Touch and Go Records, and they had all these bands that people were wild about. I like some of it, but not all of it from the mid- to late-90s. This is kind of in the grouping of albums where, for me, I was like "yeah this is fine but maybe not totally my style." Bullet Proof Cupid is a good song, and I also picked Let Me Come Back for my 1001 "favorites" playlist, but overall this was kind of an underwhelming and average album as a unit.

The lead singer’s voice is a bit grating, which lessens the enjoyment level. But they certainly know how to create a solid wall of sound. Not really my cup of tea, but I do think they succeeded at what they probably set out to do. Gonna give it 3 stars because I can’t give it 2.5

I liked it

I think this was decent but after awhile all the songs sounded too similar to me.

Album 886 of 1089 Girls Against Boys - Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby (1993) Rating : 2.75 / 5 Some pretty solid rock here — enough that I wouldn’t mind hearing it again, though I don’t know that I’ll go out of my way to seek it. It’s got a gritty edge and a steady groove that makes for a good listen, even if it didn’t quite push into standout territory. A fine album overall.

I only listened to the first two songs on this album, but based on my rubric, I think I can rate it anyway. 😊 It's definitely not a 1 or a 5. And unless it takes a drastic turn, it's also better than a 2. Based on my (limited) familiarity with Girls Against Boys, I also highly doubt it reaches the level of a 4. So there you go. #cheating

Probably would have been 4 stars to 20 year old me, but that ship had sailed. I will need to be satisfied with Local H and Primal Scream to scratch this itch. Love the filthy grooves and while I don’t mind his growl, it doesn’t do enough to push this farther into my rotation. Glad to hear it on balance, though.

Cool.soumdimg drums

5/10 not a fan of grunge, but this was still fairly well produced I guess

Guitar was cool but that's about it.

Pretty good!!

Never heard of em, but it was interesting and decent - neat to see early forms of what became post-hardcore.

Fine. 3.5

It's okay

Decent harder 90's indie rock. Some dud tracks ("7 Seas" and two ending songs) but a great standout "Bullet Proof Cupid".

Man, I was totally into this type of shit in 1993 and I never heard this album. I swear, Dimery must have a personal soft spot for this record because he was sent a review copy or he found one in a cut-out bin or a copy was left behind after a particularly raucous party, and he played it a lot and developed a fondness for it. This is a fair example of a certain brand of muscular alternative rock of the period, but I could name a bajillion bands that were doing the same thing to equal or better effect. For nostalgia's sake, this prompted me to go and spin a 1992 compilation album from my collection called 'Mesomorph Enduros' (https://www.discogs.com/release/1302085-Various-Mesomorph-Enduros) and, sure enough, there are a bunch of songs that sound pretty much exactly like this from Jesus Lizard, Melvins, Cop Shoot Cop, Foetus Inc, Tad, Laughing Hyenas, Unsane, etc etc. Many of those bands have secured a much more rightfully deserved place in alternative music history. This is a solid but unremarkable example of the genre. I dig it generally and probably would have really loved it if I had chanced upon it in 1993. But, with the benefit of thirty years' perspective, it's just a bit "so what?"

me gustaron algunos temas, generalmente las canciones más lentas, muy presente la batería y los bajos

First time I heard them was in a dank basement. The album fits that first listen. It makes me think of dark clubs where it smells of old booze and stale cigarettes. It embodies the shitty places we would hang out. It a decent album, I can see this album turning off some folks. It's gritty and feels dirty. Worth a listen for sure.

Niet helemaal mijn stijl, het betert in de helft van het album.

I quite liked this. Not over the top. Classified a Indie Rock, it came across more like laid back Thrash Metal.

OK, I thought I was going to hate this based off the description but was pleasantly surprised! It sounds a bit like discount Alice in Chains, but would rather listen to some sick riffs than some of the other UK shit on this list. 3/5

Metaling

love that the apple music description of this band is stating that they “made hardcore sexy”

Harder than I expected. It's not bad, just not something I often gravitate to.

I suppose that until I come up with my very own list of the 1001 greatest albums, I should stop making comments like "How is THIS one of the 1000 greatest albums of all time?!" Certainly, there has been an effort to include a diversity of musical styles on this list, and this is absolutely a decent example of heavy metal machine-blasted music from the 1990s. I suppose if I had heard it at just the right age in my emotional/musical development, I might even have found myself smitten by it like I was with Shriekback a decade before this came out. But hearing it now leaves me just pretty much "Meh [shrugging emoji]." I don't know. Kind of like Rage Against the Machine without the thoughtfulness or the really terrific guitar shredding?

The album has a cool, heavy sound with intense tracks and a solid groove. The dual bass guitars create a unique, dark foundation, and the overall atmosphere is consistently dark and industrial. But while the sound works well, I miss a bit more variation, especially in the vocals, which tend to feel a bit monotonous over time. 3/5

Not something that I would seek out again but was a pretty solid album. It got a bit repetitive and seemed like 3 or 4 songs just kind of blurred into 1 song. 6.4/10 113/1001

This album is better than that Scritti Politti Album I reviewed yesterday. I haven't heard anything like "Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby" before. There are still a few problems with this album. Some tracks are more boring than others. "Rockets Are Red" has an amazing riff, making it my favourite from the album. 3 stars for "Venus Luxury No. 1 Baby".

Some surprisingly good songs in here, but ultimately misses the mark of good, complete music.

Not bad. My kinda vibes

Really ok

I didn't dislike any of this one, but I also don't remember a single song from the entire album. This makes it a bit hard to review I guess. Standouts - 3/5

Mudhoney ish.

It wasnt as bad as I expected to be honest 3/5

Sounds like a lot of other songs idk

Fairly indicative of where the genre was at the time, and considering this album predates some of NiN and Ministry's sound I wonder if this was an inspiration. Quite an enjoyable disc from a band I never heard of. 3/5

Early 90s punk rock grunge album. Evolving from the nirvana and 80s sounds prior

Classic post punk

Oli ihan mielenkiintoisia ja hyviä hetkiä ja sitten ei taas niin hyviä.

22/06/2025 There was nothing special about it.

Never heard of these guys until this album. I thought this was a pretty good, enjoyable album. Listened a few times and even checked out some of their other material, which was pretty decent as well. Album kept my attention all the way through even felt myself vibing out to a few songs. A few of the songs that stood out were In Like Flynn, Rockets Are Red, Let Me Come Back Billy's One Stop and 7 Seas. The "Uh huh, Uh huh Uh huh" sticks in your head! Liked the album, nothing really great, but overall a pretty solid album I enjoyed my listens. Much like Soft Boys, will probably take some time to dive deeper in their material. Good gym album too! 3.5

3.5 I wasn’t really sure what to expect out of this album with the genre listed as “post-hardcore”. Like, I barely know what classifies as post-punk half the time, is this just New Order, but mosh-able? Turns out, yeah, it sort of is. It’s heavy, but catchy; melodic, but grungy (certainly a product of 1993). Hell, there even seemed to be some early traces of post-grunge and nu metal in there that I really wanted to hate but couldn’t bring myself to. So, I guess that’s to say I found this to be a pretty good album. I really dug the overall ambience created within the production, though, at the same time, it’s also very same-y, to the point where I didn’t even realize songs had switched over half the time - which isn’t helped by the general lack of substance in the lyrics. Like, yes, you could argue that this flows well, but there’s just not really a ton of twists and turns to keep the ride exciting. That said, I did walk away with a few favorite tracks, those being In Like Flynn, Rockets are Red, and Learned It, though I couldn’t really tell you why exactly I like them more - I think their choruses might be a bit more catchy? I’m not exactly sure why this album made this list (unless it truly is because of its influence on post-grunge and nu metal, in which case I’m forcing myself to resist from docking it points), but I had an enjoyable time with it. I can’t say this made me into a huge Girls Against Boys fan, but they’ve probably earned themself a spot or two in the musical rotation.

apparently this is post-hardcore but it sounds more industrial to me? sounds a lot more like nine inch nails or fear factory than fugazi or something but idk lmao i'm probably wrong. anyway I have no idea what this is but it's kinda mid. favorite song: "bullet proof cupid" overall: 5/10

Our House is my favorite

Well, my mom asked me to turn it off in the car because it was “disturbing, distorted, and weirdly quiet,” and also “bad.” So obviously this gives it at least one extra star. I feel like this album has some potential. To blow up a Winchell’s? No, but still kinda cool. I’d revisit it.

There were brief occasions where I thought this album could turn into something I'd enjoy, but they quickly drifted away and the album never really went anywhere. Also, the band biography on Spotify says that the vocals are reminiscent of Mark E. Smith which is a fucking bizarre statement to make.

not exactly my type. all sound the same. I guess its the style. different, but probably i will not be hearing again

While I do hold a certain nostalgic fondness for that early ‘90s sound it’s not really my jam and this in particular didn't do much else for me.

A good record that can run in the background and does not annoy. But unfortunately that’s it. I was missing some hits here.

Some good tracks here

This was alright still

I listened to this album 3 times, and yet I had to check the reviews to clarify what genre I was listening to. It seems like it falls under the Post-hardcore umbrella and I have to agree, as it releis on the heavy production and the hard hitting riffs and drums... But I think this album is just decent. I would even say that the most redeeming aspect is the quality of the sound and some catchy riffs here and there, as all the songs feel and sound the same, without doing anything very interesting. Overall, I think it is decent.

Pretty fucking banging, if a little samey. Not quite a four.

I dig some of the riffs on this. The vocals really don’t do it for me though.

A great band searching for a singer. Lots of crunchy riffs with power and zest badly spoiled by that distorted noise coming from the lead singer. 7 Seas is a classic example. That song is fun and you can hear good musical lyrics wrecked. 5- star band with a 1-star singer.

Probably 3/5

Жестковато. Для определённого настроения, в плане разнообразия пойдёт. 5 из 10.

Girls against Boys was an alt-rock, post-hardcore band from DC. They began as a studio side project for Fugazi member Brendan Canty and bassist Eli Jenney. Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby is the second studio album from the group, and the first after they moved to the Touch and Go label. These are edgy, guitar driven, 90s punk songs - or perhaps more appropriately, post-punk songs. This is a good album from a band that could have been more famous; they have songs - like "7 Seas" - that could have been pop hits. The band provides a great example of the harder side of 90s alt rock.

Totally fine 90s indie rock. I didn't really notice it when it came out, and I don't feel I missed much

Excellent music for establishing an atmosphere. Mumbling, heavy instrumentals, kinda monotonous and gloomy. If you're running an RPG set in the mid-ninties, play this to establish the mood! I found it dull, yet inoffensive.

This was just okay to me.

Completely unfamiliar, an interesting mix of influences - primarily the DC (post)hardcore scene and the alternative movement of the 90s. Two bass players gives the whole thing a groove too. Will return to it.

The distorted vocals just ruin this.

Girls against boys paved the way for girls who like boys and boys who like girls.

If it wasn't for the fact that this was an early representative of post-hardcore, I'd say this is a fairly run of the mill post-punk/hardcore record. But given its time and place, this is actually pretty cool.

After being immersed in the fuzz for long enough, you can start to feel the layers of what's going on here. Following some of the earliest Post-Rock that hit the scene, you can find the creative depths of post-hardcore falling into place

Starts off pretty cool - the rough vocals didn't even bother me at first, but then it starts getting dirgy and plodding and kind of unpleasant. Any lyrics I could understand, I don't know what they mean. A low 3/5.

This was some pretty decent noise rock. Nothing really stood out to me but also I didn't dislike it. I probably need to give it another listen. I listened while working and work has been busy. But I guess that says the kind of album it was. It didn't annoy me but it also didn't make me stop and look at which song was playing.

This was rad! Very post punk almost proto-grunge? I like the aggressive heavy dullness of it. It has all of the elements of things that interest me about hardcore music: raw energy, heavy production, minor keys and low notes. I've never heard this, but I enjoyed it!

Not bad, but also not incredible good.

Pretty much all songs I could expect to hear on the alt rock station but none I would stay for.

This was a surprise! What even is it? Grungy and layered. I really liked it.

79% Best: Go Be Delighted; Let Me Come Back; Bullet Proof Cupid; 7 Seas Must-Hear? Not quite

This did little for me. Not bland. As many if these album are. I bit on the heavier side, but with nothing distinguishing to me.

I liked this. As rock seems to be fading, it's nice to come across bands that rock hard. But... "7 out of 10 and rounding down".

It’s was pretty decent although not sure if I would listen to it again.

It is a fine album to listen to. No really complaints. It just seems pretty average. Couldn’t they find something more worthwhile? 3.5

"Venus Luxure No.1 Baby" sits outside anything MTV was drip-feeding me in the early ’90s, buried in a lane I didn’t even know existed. My taste was deep into alternative rock at the time, so I wasn’t exactly closed off to this kind of thing. This album just never crossed my path. A relatively obscure release on Touch and Go Records wasn’t making its way into my suburban orbit. And yet it somehow sounds familiar, like I’ve spent years hearing bands circle this sound without quite realising where it came from. You can hear the blueprint in it, that clipped, abrasive edge and the groove forcing its way through the noise, long before some scenes discovered how to package it. What sticks is how tightly it locks in. Eleven tracks, all pulling in the same direction, all built on that same coiled tension between abrasion and movement. It makes the album easy to sit with, easy to let run on. But that consistency cuts both ways. The narrow dynamic range starts to flatten things out over time, and the vocal delivery, steady, dry, almost indifferent, doesn’t offer much lift when you need it. It either pulls you deeper into the mood or leaves you circling it from the outside. I kept flipping between the two. Then there’s the dual bass setup, the thing that gives the record its shape and the detail I kept coming back to. It feels like a calling card, but I kept wondering how much of it is idea versus necessity. If both lines are shadowing each other, could you get to the same place another way? Maybe that misses the point. Maybe the physical presence of it, two players locked into the same low-end pulse, is the point. Either way, it works, even when I’m not fully convinced by it. I can’t point to a single defining moment, which may be the point. The record stays with me as a shape, not a highlight reel, and I’m still not sure whether that’s the album's strength or it's sleight of hand.

fun dual-bass action, some bangers, grungy

Enjoyed more than I thought I would. Interestingly grungy.

I enjoyed this album. It had a very early 90s alt-grunge rock feel. Unfortunately, it also lacked a distinctive personality that more successful grunge bands had during this time. I feel this got lost in the shuffle with bands that had better singles for that exact reason.

This album is straight up 90s. Lots of grungy riffs. I would totally believe it if i read an article saying Chris Cornell heard this album while writing for Superunknown.

A cool gothic-esque album. Some proper slapping riffs.

Liked this more than i thought and I am super tired of 90s rock. The overall feel is nice, dark and heavy. The guitar riffs are center stage and I enjoyed the distorted vocals. Bit of "System of a Down" and "The Bronx" in there. All in all not many tracks that really stood out but i thought "Let Me Come Back", "Bullet Proof Cupid" and "In Like Flynn" was a step above the rest. Atrocious album name.

Competently played workout music 3.1

Very rhymic bass thrums life into the tracks. Indifferent song/talk vocals take the life back out. The double bass is a subtle and unique choice. But does it really elevate the tracks? If so, not by much.

It's OK, but nothing that you need to hear before you die or anything. 3/5

Sludge

Liked this better than I expected. I remember them from the Clerks soundtrack. 3/5

really hated the guy's voice. otherwise great album

Starts off great, loses me by the end. Some cool sounds. Could grow on me. 3/5

Kind of dark and helmet-ish in some ways. Certainly something I would normally like but it didn't really stand out to me.

A good example of this kind of thing. But why is it here?

Not bad but nothing special.

Was a lot better than I expected. The best being Rockets are Red & Bulletin Proof Cupid 1001 album worthy: Yes - 40/71

Eh, grungy

Surprised, didn't expect this to sound so good. I like it

Not for me

Kind of reminded me of Slint and Fugazi. Not terrible but not really my thing. Light 3.

interesting

Durchschnitt!

Better than expected

Familiar with this band only in name, I went in blind. I thought it was fine. It seems like something I would have liked a lot had I heard it in college or high school, but probably wouldn't have ever picked it back up after that. Rockets Are Red, Bullet Proof Cupid and 7 Seas were the highlights, and I'm putting this on the low end of 3.

I guess this was a re-listen from 8 years ago, but I didn’t remember it at all. Probably won’t remember this time either, but its good enough to have on

3.4 This is a new listen for me. Nothing earth-shattering but I enjoyed it.

It’s ok I guess.

Not bad but there are far better Bands with this hard core bent on Touch and Go Records that I bet are not in this 1001… Flour, Brick Layer Cake, Rapeman and Big Black… go listen to them.

I first heard this band on the Mallrats soundtrack - first impressions were they're like Archers of Loaf just not as good. The songs are occasionally a tad meat and potatoes. I love early 90's alt-rock but again, another album on this list that you *need* to hear? Best Tracks: In Like Flynn; Rockets are Red; Bullet Proof Cupid

Pretty sure I would have liked this if I knew about it when it came out. Now it feels sort of generic. There were enough of these bands that were sort of "grunge adjacent" that it was hard to keep track of at the time. They probably belong to that giant pile of songs that you heard once on 120 minutes, told your roommate to hey come listen to this, and then promptly forgot about two weeks later. 3.5 stars

No strong opinion here.

++: Let Me Come Back, Learned It, Get Down, Seven Seas, Billy's One Stop +: In Like Flynn, Go Be Delighted, Rockets Are Red, Satin Down, Bughouse +-: Bullet Proof Cupid 7,0/10

Pretty good, lost in a time of great alternative music, but some great songs overall.

I had heard of this band, but for some reason I assumed they were an indie/pop-punk kind of vibe. This is darker and heavier (is indie/hardcore a thing?) than I expected, I kind of like it. This album is certainly not along the lines of my usual preferences, but I might look into the rest of their catalog.

Pretty good pretty good, pretty nice pretty nice

Decent 90s grunge. Some songs are a little repetitive within themselves; not a lot of variety in sound or substance

This was okay, not really my style, it wasn't very memorable as it was just the same thing for the whole album. Once you've heard one song, you've basically heard them all. The name is pretty wild. I wouldn't listen to this again.

I'm a softee for early 90s grunge/punk etc. So I enjoyed this. Probably not for everyone.

Gloom & doom sounding. Oddly perfect mood for the day...

Post hardcore, hardcore, whatever, definitions are dumb, genres are dumb. I guess it's ok but nothing sticks out.

i was a lot more enthusiastic for this album when I thought it was going to be a riot grrl anthem. what do you mean this is all dudes???? stolen valor aside, this is... fine. really didn't speak to me in any significant way, but didn't piss me off enough for a 2.

meh. this was early 90s grunge, sure, but without any of the emotion or power that sets the best grunge bands apart from the rest. it doesn't help that the band name sounds like it's gonna be some riot grrrl punk and then WHAM it's more middle-of-the-road grunge. not sure what about this album possibly qualifies it for this list but it's nowhere near the worst offender. it's just a mediocre 2.5 star album to me and luckily it doesn't frustrate me enough to round down. rather, i just can't be bothered to care about it, which i'm sure is the apathetic grunge feeling they were going for anyway. favorites: go be delighted, bullet proof cupid

Good sound but nothing really extra about it.

Didn’t mind that at all

Undergroung do mal kkkkk gostei

flott trommu og bassasánd. finnst þessi stefna ekkert spes. en set annað og meira vegna spretta. 3,5.

I think this one would probably grow on me with time, as it is I liked it fine but didn't find anything particular memorable that elevates it above a lot of other 90's indie rock.

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: In Like Flynn, Go Be Delighted, Learned It, 7 Seas Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Noisy and grungy but didn't hate it like I normally would. 3.5 rounded down, was one more great song from a 4

I wanted to like this so much. I love Soul Side, the band's previous incarnation with a different singer, and appreciated the punk meets post-hardcore sound that was unmistakably Dischord out of Washington DC. This album starts the same musically, but the vocals are growly and buried in the mix. The result sounds much more metallic and less tuneful. I just couldn't get into it.

Ended up skipping the end

I did not care for this album. I just don't think I like this genre. On Wikipeida they are described as a "post-hardcore" band and I guess that tracks. I just didn't vibe with the album too much at all. I did like one song called Billy's One Stop but that was about it. I could see how if you liked the genre you would like this album but it just was clearly not for me.

this is ok but i feel like theres a lot of better noise rock albums

solid album. it's a little bit too noisey and ugly sounding for my tastes but i enjoyed how bombastic and aggressive the sound was. i found this album much more appealing than other contemporaries in its space. not really my type of music, but i appreciate that it uses the aggressiveness and rough-around-the-edges sound as a compliment to the music and not the focus.

This album is tense. Raspy lyrics, driving drums, relentless power guitar. Absolutely not a fun album, but it has its place. The only other band that it kind of reminds me of is maybe Astral Pariah but it's not a great comparison. I enjoyed this one.

At times quite engaging like the opening track, In Like Flynn. And unfortunately at other times low key boring like the closing track Bughouse.

This has a certain darkness to it that I like. You have to be in the right mood, but Halloween is coming.

I do like post hardcore so I enjoyed this, but just not sure ill come back to it,

Was never really able to get into this band. I do always find it interesting to consider how certain bands choose to express their angst. I was much more of a punk rock guy in my youth. Music like this can sound very silly when you consider how seriously they seem to be taking themselves.

Alright, interesting for its time period.

Good solid Rock. Nothing stood out as amazing, but it was good.

Despite being remarkably simple, I have a lot of thoughts about this album. On one hand the simplistic groovy songs work really well, but on the other they definitely drag on for way too long without any changes. This album could have been cut in half (or some songs combined) to streamline it and make it more accessible. But there is something about the sludgier sound that scratches an alternative itch for me. Top tracks: Rockets Are Red, Satin Down, Learned It

This was all a bit grungy, murky and growly. Not bad, but not good either.

It's fine but they seem like they need a girlfriend or something because this is depressing

I'm neutral, sure it was good.

Non-specific early 90’s grunge. It wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t all that memorable. I think there’s a reason I’ve never heard of this band. At least it doesn’t feel like my time was wasted.

Terrific production with the occasional bop. It could have been more with better songwriting.

Very decent album

The music is good, the vocals less so

Average

Another one never heard of before. Who are these guys? Droning melodies that sort of sound ok…but can you dance to them?

I like late 90's gritty rock like this, but maybe not all at once. The gloomy chords and raspy speak-sing vocals are a definite *mood*. It will get you moving for sure. Maybe not in a joyful way but I guess sunny dispositions aren't for everyone.

Post Hardcore. It is what it is and does what it does pretty well. Never heard of this band before. Not many listens on Spotify or views on YouTube. Possibly a Fugazi album would have been more representative of the genre?

Pretty decent

I got the impression this is a softer version of metal....very interesting

2.5/5. This is fine. Not really for me, but it was surprisingly not painful to listen to. Overall I found it kind of boring.

This all fit just fine but I wasn't taken in by any of it. The cover lacks confidence in some strange way. Feels like it was put together by three different designers all wrestling for control of the mouse. Regardless. Fine? But no big take aways for me.

Bring the noise

Cod rock.

on this evidence the girls should win

Heavy and pretty decent.

Sounds fine. Didn't really pay attention but it seems right up my alley. Bit derivative from things like Sonic Youth and Hüsker Dü though.

This sounds like something that I would have been listening to in my early teens! Unfortunately in present terms it's just pretty average.

D.C. represent! Ignoring the fact that they moved to NYC right after forming, lol. Nothing revolutionary, but it's gritty and has great flow. Lots of great tracks to headbang to \m/

Never heared of them before. Musically reminds me very much of "Placebo" which I love - except the vocals. Not a single outstanding song but also no complete fails. 3,5

hmm.... not sure what to think of this one if i'm being honest with you. very ominous hardcore rock with an emphasis on noisy, hedonistic sounds and vocals. this isn't goth, this isn't grunge, this feels and sounds more like... emo... punk? i don't know. it's a peculiar sound, but unfortunately it's not the kind of sound that i enjoyed too much.

This album is great. Deep rock and roll with heavy vocals. Influences of grunge and punk. Slaying guitars and drums, heavy bass lines. This is fun.

Sure, it's fine.

interesting sound but boring
