Reviews (page 4 of 6)

A little dark and moody for me. Good instrumentation. Seems very much like Nine Inch Nails to me.

This was a long slog but I felt like I'd kind of found the groove near the end.

Well, here’s a dark little collection. I liked the first few songs… but a lot of the album had a sameness that wore on me by the end. Good but not a strong love connection for me.

This is completely the genre I'm into, but it's not the best album in the grenre or even the timeframe

This is dark and heavy in a way that I wasn't expecting. There's a very menacing quality in this singer's vocals that makes every lyric feel like a threat. I'm not sure I'll ever add this into my rotation, because it feels just a shade too dark for me, but I do like the hard rock musicality here. I think this could have been something I'd have explored a little more enthusiastically were I still in my youth, cultivating my musical tastes. I don't think it resonates with my current phase of life, which is why I'll respect it but it won't stick.

#41 - not really my jam but not bad music either, quite noisy and negative but in a musical way

I enjoyed this a ton more than I thought I might

Huh. This feels like it probably would have been a fairly unique sound in 1993, and for some experimental/indie/alt-rock it holds up pretty well. It's a little raw for my tastes, but I thought it was decent. I can totally understand why I've never heard of this band (I can't imagine their whole vibe appealing to a wide audience), but they're pretty good at what they do. 3.3

these guys had one really good idea but that idea was a straitjacket that stopped them from writing more good songs than boring ones

I gotta say, I enjoyed this album, listened to it start to finished and don’t remember much beyond some riffs.

meh? 3 stars

Boy what the hell boy

I adore the dark, hopeless, hellish, apocalyptic, torturted sound of this album. It feels like it reaches a hand out and tries to drown you in it's own madness, and while some moments on the album make th is hand feel strong, other leave it weak and frail. There were times when it could get too screamo, or not lean heavily enough into its infernal sound, but there's still a lot to like. Glad I listened to it.

Back in the day I often wished Girls Against Boys would stop being coy and just non-stop deliver the rock they were so clearly capable of crafting. They'd have these songs that would pull you in close and hit you hard with some crushing riff and cool vocal delivery. Those songs were just so good. But then they'd turn around and have a song that would lose itself in a mid-tempo, tryin' to sleaze meander. I think I have like 3 albums and I was frustrated in this way by all of them. Today giving this record a listen after not listening to them in ages, I still have the same reaction though it is tempered with a greater latitude for the slower tracks. I still get impatient during some of the breathy-cool, faux-sultry, slow jams, but overall I think I'm more able to accept that the vibe that was their goal often just wasn't my preference. They were a band that could make the kind of music I preferred but chose to pursue some other ways of making music and that's okay. Now I may have not reached the level of chill to fully appreciate GVSB but at least I'm cool with their pursuit of cool.

3 stars

Not my cup of tea, 2.5

Good alternative album

Not bad but a bit generic. I remember being impressed by the idea of Girls Against Boys when I first heard of them but they didn't make that much of an impact in Australia (at least to my knowledge). When I finally heard their music it wasn't bad but just nothing that different to loads of other bands

Not bad but it's no Spiderland.

Pretty good, hadn’t heard before. 3.27

Honestly, better than I expected. Low 3

A fun grungy rock album. Could not tell what much of the lyrics were, but the music was good. Wasn’t very impressed by anything, just a solid sound. Standouts: Go Be Delighted, Learned It, and Bullet Proof Cupid.

Just sound like sonic youth followers. Rating: 3.1

I think their sound was cool & solid. But I thought the songwriting was weak, and at times I found it hard to care about the music.

Never heard these guys before, but it was pretty good.

6.5/10

This is not what I was expecting LOL. I wish the vocals were mixed a little louder, and this style of music is not normally my favorite, but I appreciated the production, and thought that the band sounded pretty good.

I've never heard of this group, they sound like a harder version of Eels (mostly bc of the singer/general 90s vibes I guess).

Ah, vandaar dus: indie.

It’s definitely my kind of music. A never heard of them before. It sounds a little like the Psychedelic Furs at times…but with more edge. Maybe a little Nirvana-like at times too… I’ll continue to listen and someday I think it will be a favorite but, right now I am just getting to know it. Hard to rate it fairly, but Ia’ll give it a solid 3.5. Standouts: Rockets are Red, Bug House

I enjoyed this hardcore metal thrasher slasher album and wished I had listened to it at the gym instead of my desk. Post hardcore...why were you late to the hardcore party? This group sounds like Stone Temple Pilots wanted to be rougher so they had a baby with Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie...out of the easy bake oven comes Girls against boys. They have a great rough edge but not to the point of overblown death metal. They have just enough edge to be a favorite at the gym. Because yes, it's gotten old listening to Godsmack and Disturbed. Their drummer is badass too and I love the drum beats on this album. 3.4

Never heard of these guys. Quite liked the sound, but the vocals were off-putting - felt like forced teen angst. Take that out and it's pretty good, twin bass fuzz attack!

Mixed on this. I enjoy the aggression and texture building throughout. The ethos of this music seems to be to bank on the dynamics more than the 'riffs'. Which is very cool when it works, and a little dull when it doesn't. It reminds me of very contemporary sounds, from NIN to Deftones and notably Dope Body and Chat Pile. It even harkens back to Velvet Underground at points. The difference for me between those bands at their best and this is a compelling vocal, and i feel this is held back by a less than captivating vocal style. Its so gravely it borders on whispery...which is a shame because it almost has a Lemmy from Motorhead timbre, but like, Lemmy when he has a cold. There were some shining moments, the most realized of which was the song 7 Seas. That one was kinda perfectly balanced dynamics wise and had such an obscured and haunting harmonic quality. I feel myself giving this one another go, and seeking out more from this and related bands. Its somewhere in that The Fall lineage of bands...so maybe I'll start there?

Eh there might be some potential here. My first impression was this is ok.

3.5 - It took a couple tracks for me to get used to the mumbly vocals and murky guitars, but I ended up liking this. It's full of catchy riffs, loud and driving (see: "Learned It"). I also liked the eerie quiet on "Satin Down" and "Bughouse."

Good rock. 3/5

Never heard of this band. Quite like their style, equidistant between grunge, hard rock and punk. It probably won't end up on my rotation but I enjoyed it nonetheless

While I quite enjoyed the dark sonic soundscape and the from the bottom of the well vocals (eg the production), I didn't think that much of the actual songs or singing.

Never heard of these guys before. Enjoyed the album but feels dated

Yeah kinda digged the sound and the energy, but ultimatley didnt click hey ho.

Liked this, never heard of them before now.

Fine, nothing special

Some parts I loved, some parts I didn't like. I don't know what to make of this. This sounds like noise rock but with a hardcore singer.

Pretty generic soft punk stuff. Post-hardcore? I don't know about that.

The parts where they sounded like a wish version of Sonic Youth were great! But speaking of 90s post-hardcore, I think we can have really better than that with At The Drive-In, Slint or Fugazi.

Not really sure how to describe this one but it was worth checking out. It’s been labelled as a post-hardcore album but doesn’t really sound like what I would class as post-hardcore for the most part - it’s more like a darker, scuzzier Alice in Chains with a gruffer vocal. Good stuff

My first time listening to Girls Against Boys. I've heard them described as post-hardcore, and I wasn't quite sure what that was supposed to sound like. And to be frank, a lot of it sounded like 90s grunge. Not a bad thing. Parts reminded me of Nirvana and Sonic Youth, though not as great as either. Thought about in the context of its time, I can see it feeling exciting, like an important part of a scene at its height. In retrospect, it suffers from being a bit repetitive and doesn't quite stand the test of time. But it has its moments and it's fun to imagine having been there.

Interesting Hard Rock Album

Okay.... First album on this list that im unsure why is it on here. Dont get me wrong, it isnt bad, its just meh. Around this time there were so many bands who did the same thing sonically, so im not sure why Girls Against Boys made the list. Highlights are definitely Bulletproof Cupid and Let me Come Back. The rest...eh... Its just bland. Sorry boys.

In Like Flynn 3 Go Be Delighted 2.8 Rockets are Red 3.1 Satin Down 2.7 Let Me Come Back 2.9 Learned It 3 Get Down 3 Bulletproof Cupid 3 Seven Seas 2.8 Billy's One Stop 2.9 Bug House 2.8 Score: 2.909090909

Not bad. I enjoyed this grungy indie band.

Kinda of likes it. Not sure if he played on this album but the original drummer was in Fugazi. I’m confused by the label post hardcore. What is it !

I have never heard of this band or album, but I think middle school me would have really liked it. Middle aged me thinks its is a bit dark and verging on the territory of just noise. Still, not awful. I think if the singing didn't feel kind of like lazy chanting it might have scored a bit higher.

Let me come back has some energy to it. And some distortion. And unrecognizable lyrics. Not much else to say about it.

I definitely like how it starts... the bass and drums definitely find a groove and push the music forward. The muted, mumbly lyrics do kind of fit with the overall vibe and i think it works. My main issue is that it seems like all the songs are like 20% different than the next. It has potential, but not much stands out.

Really grungy

I was really about this for the first few tracks, then certain things started to grate a little. The vocals can at times feel effortlessly cool, but at certain points more... grunting. There are shades of Smashing Pumpkins and Failure on here, which I appreciate, as I also appreciate anything called "post hardcore" by Wikipedia being on here. Call it a 3.5. Favorite tracks: "Rockets Are Red", "7 Seas"

is this really an album i NEED to have listened to before i die? basic grunge album, very few standout noises, all felt pretty basic

I’m not sure what I was expecting getting into this (probably something like Sebadoh who I dislike), but… a post-hardcore band from Washington, DC formed from Fugazi and Soul Side alumni was NOT what I was expecting. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this band. This is at least as good as what Fugazi was doing around this time period. It leans heavily into bass and drums with a lighter touch on the guitar, and that’s something that I think differentiates the sound from Fugazi and other post-hardcore acts. I really like this one, I’m glad this was included.

Solid grungey songs. A good sound. Very enjoyable. Not many huge peaks, but Let Me Come Back rockets, and to a certain extent Billy's One Stop reaches those heights. Glad to have listened to and enjoyed this album, although some of it is a less defined Nirvana.

The pros - it sounds a bit like big black, it's the sort of thing I'd hoped for when I was looking for other grunge bands, rather than Pearl Jam. The cons - it doesn't have any mind meltingly brilliant tracks, it's about three tracks too long. Overall it's good, but not life changingly brilliant.

A couple decent songs. Average.

Me han gustado "Learned it", "Bullet proof cupid" y "Billy's one stop".

The first band on this list that I had not even heard of prior to this review. I probably will go back and listen again- apparently they are a project from a Fugazi member, though I would probably always rather listen to Fugazi instead.

This is solid stuff. Strong-driving music that doesn't fall apart. I enjoyed it.

Not really my genre but I kinda liked it. 7 seas, and Billy’s one stop highlights

Not my style of music

Reminded me of soundgarden. Heavy sound

Un tanto grunge. Guitarrero y algunos temas un tanto oscuros

I liked the noisier, heavier songs, but the vocals and lyrics brought this down for me.

Not my sound. Too much noise. But intriguing intros and interesting bass guitars.

Noisy and weird, but not as good as a bunch of similar stuff by better bands - fugazi, Nirvana, mudhoney, Pixies, etc.

I like the harder, darker sound of this album; especially compared to the last album I listened to.

3/5. While this is an alternative album, there were plenty of punk and grunge elements that really gave this record some shine.

Listening to this Album feels like drinking a Manhatten in the Garage of a Mortician. I like the gritty mood and don't mind the repetitive tracklist too much, though I admit that I probably wouldn't listen to too much of this at a time.

Nothing special US post punk hardcore. Unremarkable.

not bad, i don't think i found any songs i'd add to a playlist tho

3/5. Heavy and thick, close to sludge metal, this goes pretty hard. Mostly unintelligible lyrics save a few but it feels like that is correct. The riffs are clean and drudging, akin to early black sabbath but providing the punk of the Stooges for example. Some of these songs last a little long, but they do go pretty hard. Slows down a little near the end but a solid listening experience.

Forgot to rate this one a few months ago. Can't remember it at all. Must've been just alright

Never heard of them, but it seems like it's right up my alley. A weird mix of alt-rock and Jesus Lizard and mumbled talk-singing. Nice low-end action. Giving it a 3 because it's not *all* strong, but I'll probably revisit this one.

Post-hardcore bands all sound like they think they are going super hard but aren’t which I guess is the point?

All in a minor key. Brooding rock.

I'd never heard this before but I liked it. It reminded me a bit of bands like Nada Surf and Rival Schools who I really like, but didn't really have many stand out moments.

This is a bit growly for my taste but there are some elements I enjoy. Bullet Proof Cupid is a great track but nothing else really stood out to me.

Not generally my type of music but I had some fun listening to it.

The drums were excellent and as a former drummer, I appreciate that. However, the singer had a very grating and irritating voice. Musically not bad but the songs were kind of samey. Overall, OK.

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Go be delighted

Decent garage/hardcore-ish LP with a few fun tracks. Can’t say anything has stuck with me throughout the day, though, and there are far more notable albums from the time period.

I liked more than I thought I would so 3 stars.

fucking terrible name. it's got nothing on pocononce.

C+ In Like Flynn 3 Go Be Delighted 3 Rockets Are Red 3 Satin Down 3 Let Me Come Back 2 Learned It 3 Get Down 3 Bulletproof Cupid 3 Seven Seas 2 Billy's One Stop 2 Bug House 3 After seeing the album cover at precisely 11 PM EST, I was skeptical. However, it was good.

Didn't love this band when they came out and still not a huge fan after this revisit. Just doesn't keep my interest.

Fave: satin down

1993 Post-Hardcore, Indie Rock Most well-known: Bullet Proof Cupid, Rockets Are Red and Seven Seas. It's fine. 3/5

Pretty cool post-hardcore. Having two bassists is something I’d like to hear attempted more often

Helt nice bortsett att sångaren var hemsk

Indie rock. Hardcore.

Eh. Noisy garage rock. Nothing special. Pass.

This was decent. It came out in 1993, so it's hard to tell if it's derivative of or an inspiration for bands like Rage, Tool, and Marilyn Mason - but I'd consider it to be in the same bucket. It's very much NOT any of those bands, but you catch hints of it throughout.

Not bad but didn’t really feel like anything special

Good background music while working. A bit too slow and boring to actually "listen" to. I know some of their other albums feature songs that are faster and way more energetic which I prefer over the majority of the songs on this album.

Pretty good

Grungy, hard guitar. 3.5

first listen an alright album

Pleasant surprise of decent 90s metal mixed in with some Slint-esque ominous guitar work here and there. 3.5 stars.

I thought this was good. Hadn't heard before and was a reminder in some way

pretty dank, almost 4 stars, may return and give it another listen

I honestly thought that this was gonna be another female led 90s indie rock thing but it was actually just an average male 90s indie rock album. It felt like a less memorable queens of the stone age thing where I had no strong feelings while listening to the album and will probably immediately forget about it as soon as it ends. It was by no means bad or grating, it was just whatever.

Didn't really grab me. Vocals are seldom the strong suit of this kind of music and these are uninspiring even in that context.

Went in one ear and out the other, fine but forgettable.

Based on title/band name - wasn't excited. Got through album. Was decent.

Ganksa kul. Låter lite som punk och stoner-metal. Rockets Are Red, Learned It och Bullet Proof Cupid var bäst.

Listenable, but not memorable. Pretty close to a four; I might re-listen.

Good album! Nothing too great and very repetitive. It's like Trance/Acid Indie Rock or something. I could see maybe some Nine Inch Nails influence or Pixies influence. Not bad, but not great either.

Listenable, but I wasn’t in the mood. 3* I think

I like it. It's my type of music. It's representative of the time, with a more pop-oriented sound of the grungey end of early 90s post-hardcore. I can hear Fugazi and Mudhoney as predecessors, and Deftones as a successor, in terms of the high distortion, growling yet accessible vocals, slow groove with heavy bass, and alternation between loud busy chaos and unsettling quiet. The best part is the contrast between the two basses. Lots of songs I like, with several not standing out enough. It's a decent album, but I'm not able to fall in love with it like I can with other similar records. Favorites: Go Be Delighted, Learned It, Bughouse

Solid rock but nothing to write home about

Pretty hard. seems ahead of its time. 3.5

Some of the songs are fun, some sound incredibly dated.

Good sound to it.

Strong sound. No idea what any of the lyrics are about.

I've already forgotten about this

The raw aggression of this makes me like this and hate it at the same time. I am impressed by the weight and seriousness of the sound, and also feel like I am hanging out with assholes, as they repeat phrases like "I hope you don't have a good time." The fact that they had two bass players is interesting, and I can appreciate how that is shaping their sound into something unique.

It was interesting. Surprise.

Much more my style compared to some of the other stuff on this list. It doesn't really stand out for me though. Most of the songs are really solid without much else. The back half of the album definitely brings it up a notch though.

I don’t know, I’m usually a huge fan of this dancey punk rock but I feel like this one just kinda washed over me Might come back to it in the future though to se of my opinion changes Favourite tracks: In Like Flynn, Bullet Proof Cupid, Billy’s One Stop

Exceedingly generic 1995 sounding noise. This came out in 1993 so does that make it ahead of its time? Made zero impression.

Alright I jaut started, I love the instruments but I'm not too keen on the front man. I think different vocals could be better, it is the 90s though so I get it. Okay Learned it is a banger. That little riff at the beginning was siiick. like creepy nine inch nail vibes, they need more melodic break downs and shit in their other songs because this workssssss. back half of this really surprised me.

Liked a good bit of it.

I am here for this bass tone. Satin Down I'm not so into. Bullet Proof Cupid is a cool song.

This lives on the edge of 90s alternative and what would become contemporary post hardcore. It is in that that this album flourish with a macabre tone and downright dooming demeanor. An otherwise beautiful little secret of 1990s rock.

pretty sure I've heard of this band but IDK if I've ever listened to them. I'll have to dig in a bit more. I do enjoy this, though I've never listened to a lot of post-hardcore.

Guarantee their garage smells like body odor, cheap marijuana, and vomit. Best track: 7 Seas

5/10. What's the point?

Pretty generic stuff. Can't say I really enjoyed it all that much. 2.5/5

This album is good but not great. Kind of a 3.5. The overall sound is pretty cool, but it doesn’t come together for me.

more boring than i wanted it to be — nothing terrible, but not much great either.

I only knew one of their newer records before. This record is a lot better. Sludgy post-hardcore. People who liked them were probably also into Fugazi, the Jesus Lizard and maybe Quicksand and Helmet. GvsB have a less harsh, more laid-back vibe. The songs are repetitive and long, but I like them. Favorite song: Billy's One Stop.

It's loud, it's heavy, and it has some solid riffs. But it's also a little dull if I'm being honest. Not bad, not great, sort of okay. 2.5 stars.

The linked Wikipedia articles are sometimes interesting - though what’s particularly revealing is what isn’t included there. What the article on Girls Against Boys’ “Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby” doesn’t include: - Background information on the concept and the music - Information on the cover art - Chart positions - Links to individual songs - Translations into more than two languages (why Hungarian, of all languages?) - References to best-of lists (except, of course, “1001 Albums...”) It’s also worth noting that I wasn’t familiar with this album - not many alternative bands managed to achieve that in the early ’90s. I think - and listening to it confirms this - that this speaks for itself.

Decent sounds and grooves here but the singer is dragging everything down.

Not the worst thing I've listened to in this project.

Post hardcore just isn’t my jam

Kinda shit you hear on the main menu of Tony Hawk Pro Skater because its not good enough to be used in an actual level.

GVSB always had this sheen of “cool”, like they were fashion guys, but maybe darker-edged, more Bret Easton Ellis, less Zoolander. And in keeping with that, most of their material sounds incredibly dated. Less so here, but similarly devoid of anything memorable other than a posture or vibe, whereas countless Dischord and T&G labelmates deserve a spot on this list. Kinda bummed to hate on them, they’re good people, related to or part of some great music, but nothing here clicks for me.

Another one that looked like it was gonna be a female artist - I’ll be honest I don’t get their name now I know it’s a man. He sounds like he needs some water.

Did not enjoy.

Not entirely sure what to make of this. I like some of the noisier, post-hardcore elements but a lot of it is somewhat unremarkable and just out the other ear It's alright but I won't come back to it. 2.5 Highlights: Rockets Are Red

Not my thing

I fail this see why this gets a place on the list. Unremarkable. 2/5.

Barely noticed it was playing...

Not great

Apparently girls against boys is just a noisy argument with a lot of screaming

This definitely has that sludgy, 90s post-hardcore sound down pat. The major problem for me is that post-hardcore, at least on this specific album, completely lost everything that made the hardcore punk of the 80s so dang good. Instead of that raw, breakneck speed and explosive aggression, you get these slow, dragging tempos and self-indulgent, screeching guitar feedback loops that just feel tedious.

Not my bag, but I liked some of its edge. Bullet Proof Cupid was worth a listen for sure. It builds and builds and builds

Sometimes you need to judge an album by it's cover. This is the ugliest relic of 90s rock I've ever seen, and the listen through wasn't much better. Hard to find anything redeeming here - maybe 7 Seas or some of the instrumental moments.

Meh, it was kind of gritty and dirty but the "Let Me Come Back" track was pretty good. Overall not moving the needle from a 2 star though

Aggressively "meh." It was at least competent, which kept it from being 1 star. 2 stars.

Would have been good if the vocals weren’t complete ass.

Heavy guitars and grungy feel would make this a fun band to listen to in a real dirty bar/music theater. 2.5

Oh boy. Baby's first grunge record. Shh, we don't want to wake our little rocker. Oh look at him. Throwing up the horns with his thumb out. He has so much to learn. This record is reminiscent of being bored to death during the summer and finding your grandfather's CD collection. This was the only album that wasn't either a Christmas record or a Pat Boone compendium. Your much older cousin left it there in 1995. It's terrible, but it's the best of a bad bunch and reduces the boredom temporarily. Boring grunge screaming from the rooftops, saying "I AM THE PRODUCT OF GENRE BLOAT AND DO NOT NEED TO EXIST." Lets put a ton of megaphone effect on the lead singer to make him sound sort of like popular group, Ministry, but also not at all. Listen to some actual stoner rock, or doom metal, or grunge, or just listen to birds and wind. Earth is truly a marvel, and how we ended up here will blow your mind. Don't listen to this painfully mediocre cry for 90's relevance. Man I'm even more miserable than usual lately. Maybe I need to go through my grandfather's CD collection and relax. Big Shiny Tunes 17 calls to me. 1.5-2 HIGHLIGHTS: Cats vs Dogs 2

Never heard of this lot or this album. Wish I never had. 2/5 29/5/26

I get the feeling this album made it onto this list by mistake. It may have been groundbreaking for its time, but it’s really hard to listen to now.

Really so-so, haha, cannot vibe with it

The underlying music isn't awful, it's just not great. Pretty repetitive, but hard driving 90's alternative rock. But the singing... are they trying to scare me? This isn't a monster movie, if you can't sing, hire a singer. I can't sing either but I'm not making albums. Ugh.

Cute title, not so cute music.

I was surprised that this was released in 1993. That feels like its early than I would expect. It's good. Maybe, I didnt like it as much because rock sounded just like this for the next 15 years. But I can see how this was great when it came out.

As a proud Touch & Go Records stooge (the first album I ever hid from my mom was Songs About Fucking) I can admit that this is on the weaker end of their mostly flawless 1980s / 1990s output. It doesn't rock hard enough, damn it... you want the guy to scream and for the guitars to go crazy but they don't. And it's not like a Slint thing (also Touch And Go... they must've had a dousing wand for shit like this) because it never really feels like it's building up to anything. There are faster songs, and those are solid. Still imposed by a vocalist who refuses to yell. I think this album does act as an interesting glimpse into an under discussed time in rock history, though: the post-Soundgarden, pre-Creed no man's land of VH1 and MTV nonsense that gave The Meat Puppets a popular(ish) album and Daniel Johnston a major label contract. How into that time period of music you are depends how much of this sort of noise rock brow beating you can take.

A little too aggressive sounding for me.

Started off sounding OK’ish but turned to not OK for me.

Sub par garage grunge with crappy vocals and an auroa of how cool they think the sound

Parhaat: Rockets Are Red, Let Me Come Back

Why is this on the list like there really isn't much redeeming to this unless you're pretty high on the old loud. "I hope you don't have a good time" yeah buddy, I didn't.

It was okay

Every song sounded pretty similar. Didn't hate it, but not sure I'd ever listen to this again

I enjoy the guitar! Not my usual type of music and most likely will continue to not be.

me estressou

its heavy, its a little obnoxious, and its weird you can tell the vocals are loud but they are so muddied behind the rest of the noise its like trying to hear through a wall of static. Seems like a generic entry. I think they would've been a great Bush cover band

Poorly mixed vocals buried under loud repetitive power chords. I’m sure this is considered some kind of “post punk masterpiece” but it did nothing but annoy and bore me. Even their Spotify description says their sound annoys people. I guess thanks to this we have Queens of the Stone Age who basically took their whole sound from these guys

Why did I expect this to be anything other than mediocre? The production is decent, but the vocals were lost in translation. It's not altogether bad; it simply fails to capture my imagination. If you're into bland music, this is the album for you. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - In Like Flynn - Satin Down

Album #146 Girls Against Boys: Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby This band sounds like the opener for another, more popular (and better) band. The sort of band that vaguely sounds like a genre or other band, but that’s all they are: a sound. It’s like if you went to see Joy Division and the opening band just played music that sounded like 8 different post-punk bands combined into one, it’s serviceable since it has the right general aesthetic for the occasion, but there is absolutely nothing discernible or unique about the music. Girls Against Boys would have been the perfect opener for many bands in the 90s, since they sound like an amalgamation between post-hardcore, alt-rock, and grunge, without ever threatening to impose their own identity on any of those sounds. They would be sure to set the stage, but would never come close to upstaging an act like Fugazi, Alice in Chains, or Nirvana. Overall, what I’m trying to say is that this is the kind of music you hear once and don’t remember anything about it, despite not necessarily hating it. Best Tracks: In Like Flynn, Bullet Proof Cupid, 7 Seas Worst Track: Get Down Score out of 10: 5

Neutered Nine Inch Nails??? It's a not-so-pretty hate machine. Spent Reznor. I've got more if you like.

Right... right

Fine album, just a bit too safe in every possible way for me. 2/5

'So you like that you're gonna love this.' 'Post-hardcore,' or in other words, the opposite of hardcore, Girls Against Boys aren't bad b/c they're overtly depressed but b/c they're shitty avant-garders, boasting dense lyrics that pose as spartan bits of esoteric wisdom: 'Some say shit just don't arrive / Some things just don't arrive'; 'I hope you don't have a good time'; 'That's new wet heart attack / That learned it all the way down.' Instrumentally, the band's got some oomph, especially on 'Let Me Come Back,' but the tracks don't vary enuf for me to bother. +, Scott McCloud wants desperately to be some Lou Reedian sage or Stipean poet, but he's far too mannered, too detached, & too uninteresting to effect a substantial or moving testament.

Just noise

It feels like journalists lumped Girls Against Boys into indie rock simply because they didn't know where else to place them. There are no upbeat or even slightly cheerful melodies typical of the genre here; the music is completely dark and icy, a feeling heightened by the sudden addition of two bassists. The vocals are muted to the point where you can hear something being sung, but you can't quite make out what it is. The riffs blend into each other during the transitions between songs and quickly become tiresome; I understand that during the grunge era, artists decided to make their music even messier, but this is too much. It's not exactly a bad album; there have been worse ones, and a couple of songs even sparkle a little; but I'm sure it only made it into the book because one of the writers was an edgy "not an ordinary" schoolboy in the mid-nineties. If you want some high-quality, old-school post-hardcore, try Refused.

Kinda boring

barely understood what they were saying but kk

It was fine but I’d never reach for it

A waste of time on this one.

Best Song: Bullet Proof Cupid. This song had a little more of a discernible energy to it. Worst Song: 7 Seas. Uninspired "dude rock" sounding music, complete with a mediocre guitar solo and dorky man grunting. Overall: It really was just a one note, bland pastiche of your typical "post-hardcore" music. The music just completely flowed by in the background. Nothing stood out. Doesn't belong on this list.

Pretty drab

Its ok-ish

I’m a fan of this sound but the whole album completely melted into a mush

This didn't really chime with me. The fuzzy guitars made every song blend into one and the tally vocals are not really that engaging. Not my kind of thing

This actually has a really cool sound to it. Problem is it never really experiments with any type of nuance to that sound. Gets really boring

Pretty groovy !! Really raw and gritty. Reminds me of Deftones. Fav song is ‘7 Seas’.

Musically fine, but the vocals are too screamy for me

Nothing interesting here

I'm going to be honest here, I did not like this album. I just didn't. What sucks is that there are things on Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby that I did like. The name is not one of them, by the way. What kind of album name is Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby anyway? But yeah, the instrumentation of the songs is actually rather good. Not fantastic or anything, but enjoyable enough. The album's got some good bass parts and a respectable post-hardcore atmosphere. I think the music of this album is good. The vocalist can not sing. He just can't. Scott McCloud can't fucking sing. I hated the vocals on this album. It's so coarse and monotonous and it hurts to listen to. It doesn't help that the production of the album and the vocals specifically aren't good either. The vocals are completely buried in the mix, which you'd think would be good because of the poor vocal quality of the singing itself, but that just makes it even more unintelligible. Despite the music being good, I just can't stand to listen to this album! Uhh, is the writing good? I mean, it's not bad, but it doesn't speak to me. I just don't care for this much at all. I kinda wish I did, but is this even really a must-listen album? I didn't think so. High 2/5.

Muppets sing

This sucks

Ok, I get it. There’s bass, and then there’s bass-squared. But there are so few interesting ideas here, either lyrically or musically. The vocals are super-un-engaging. “7 Seas” is the only song I’d even consider listening to again. And note that I said “consider.” I’m nearby 300 albums into this project, and this is probably one of the two or three worst things I’ve heard. Far, far from essential. What’s it doing here?

A little more screamy then I like.

It was okay, not really sure if I’d listen again but it wasn’t bad at all. Just not my style

Nice collections of intros but with nothing to follow as the mood is shafter by the singer.

An amalgamation of various 90s influences. Revolving around punk, grunge and atmospheric. Akin to Queens of the Stone Age. Only less enjoyabke

I Fackin hate their name so much. I do dig the bass sound/playing throughout the album though. Lyrics are so trash.

Noisy rock with mediocre vocals. The vibe is on point but not my thing

Cheap sonic youth knock off

Well I liked it when it came out, I like it now as an "edgy alternative rock" kind of album but reall don't think it deserves its place here.

Twas fine

this is like Bleach-era Nirvana, but completely unenjoyable.

Mehhhhhhhh I wanted to like this but it seemed very average

A bit too aggressive for my taste but not entirely awful

it was nice of them to dampen their vocals so we didn't have to hear them as much

I really hated the distorted vocals here and almost didn’t make it through the album

kind of boring deep cut buzz balads

Felt like wannabe Nine Inch Nails except NIN is at the top of their game and this band is only like part of the way there.

Good hooks, but the lyrics are perhaps a little too cryptic. Fairly derivative, sounds like the Seattle scene of 2 years earlier finally made it over to D.C. by 1993. Seems like an okay post-hardcore album. I lived through the '90s as an avid listener, and I can tell you this was not an essential or popular album that is necessary if you want to get a better understanding of American music in the 1990s. A 1000 bands in the Pacific Northwest were doing this sound by 1993. Nothing special, so a 2 it is.

I already knew I wouldn't like this album based on the title. However, it is better than most indie rock I've listened to. This album has a surprisingly raw sound.

This sounds like Buckcherry.

A little boring at times, but overall not too bad. Decent punk record with a few slower songs and a few forgettable tracks but also a few nice highlights and solid, banging riffs. Vocals sound a bit grating/hidden at times which is a shame and the many tracks that don't have much to say or don't really leave a lasting impact don't outweigh the few good ones. 2/2.5.

Also decent enough, but also wouldn't play it again on my own accord

Reading up about this, people seem to really rate it. I, however, do not.

Generic 90's sound but nothing stands out.

This sort of thing has been done a million times better by a million more bands

The album had its (brief) moments, but mostly it was just background noise ..heh.. for me.

Parts of this album were sort of my type of music, but god, the vocals are SO bad. They're monotonous fuzz, so not only are they boring sounding, they're also impossible to understand, and yet somehow grating at the same time. "Satin Down" was pushing this towards a 1. Was pretty much just waiting for this to end, but it had moments where the rock was decent and I felt like I could actually get into it for a short while... but, no, this band is not for me.

i liked 7 seas it sounded like the vocalist had a little gay awakening with his "uh huh" inflections in the chorus. mostly poop from a butt. 2nd half was better.

They are being weird and different just for the sake of being weird different

It was OK but I'm not sure why it's on the list. A bit like Sonic Youth but not as good.

Not bad per se, but not my thing. 2.5 stara

Otra mierda digna de un 2

Very dark- Satin Down keeps hoping, "You don't have a good time." I think this band is too hard-core for my taste. I did like the way the singer would use almost a whispered voice and then build sometimes to shouting. It really helped build the song and emotion.

Pretty unremarkable. Also they have like 30k listeners and none of their songs have above a million plays, so what’s the point

I may have been confused with the idea that a band called Girls Against Boys should actually have girls in it (it does not) so it took me a while to warm up to the album, and by then it was over. Maybe I'll give it another chance at some point but, for now at least, it's just gonna have to be content with being 881 out of 1001.

Boring noise rock again!

Kind of forgetable.

“Girls against Boys” is a good name for a riot grrrl type band, or at least one with a female lead. Anything else is a little suspicious. Ignoring that, this album is at best ok and at worst dawdling.

Considering the band members’ pedigree, I’m very surprised I’ve never heard this before. Members of DC’s Soul Side doing the early 90s Touch and Go (not Dischord?) indie rock thing. I wish Soul Side was on the list instead. This really didn’t do much for me. There’s a “grunge” track. A “sonic youth” track or two. For the most part, pretty forgettable. A tremendous let down. I wouldn’t seek this out, and there are so many of their contemporary bands that do it better, both on T&G and Dischord.

Meh. 2 stars

Is this post hard-core, post punk, hard-core or hard indie? I'm not sure. I like a lot of music on the louder end of the spectrum but this didn't do it for me I'm afraid. Forgettable and same same every song I felt. 2 out of 5 only.

i feel like i should like it but it doesn’t stand out to me at all, very middle of the road, 2.5

Not that great, made us feel low energy and want to sleep. A little grating.

Very samey, and not in a way that I found enjoyable.

Pure mind-numbing noise. Wouldn't be surprised if the CIA uses this to break people.

Post hardcore, hushed screams, NIN Learned it 7 seas Bughouse

Listenable, but completely unoriginal

Very 1990s-usa-indie-rock sound. I liked the harsh guitars (the introductions of "Rockets are red" or "Get Down"), not so much the raspy vocals. 2.25/5

Eh. Couple good songs that prevented me from giving up but not that great.

90s like pixies but not as good

Wow this was kind of wild to listen to - maybe I too would have liked it back in the day, but seemed like a parody of early 90s alt rock with my today’s ears.

again all the same

Another baffling inclusion. It was... fine.

I didn’t like this

The album was very same-y. Didn't really enjoy it.

Bland, boring rock. Nothing notable or interesting about it. Tough to get through, felt like they wish they were the Smashing Pumpkins but just nowhere near as good.

nineties grunge sound, but it sounds like boiled chicken breast and broccoli.

Sounds like a bit of something that NIN would be inspired from, but not my cup of tea.

As strange listen for December 23, sitting between Wonderful Christmastime and Winter Wonderland. Never heard of this artist, have no idea what scene they're from. Crisp production makes the potentially muddy guitars sound alive and fresh, would never have guessed early 90s. Didn't mind the overall vibe, although I maybe wasn't in the right mood overall on this listen for something this dark and loud. Standout tracks: In Like Flynn, Get Down

I think 19 year old me would have enjoyed this. But old me? No. I did not enjoy this.

Another post-punk/indie rock album from between 1980 and 2000. It's the definition of mid. I think I've seen a dozen of these albums in this project where one was plenty representative. Yawn.

Is this what taking steroids feels like?

A few albums I listened to and rated this week were better than I thought they’d be. This was not one of those albums. Loud, grungy, garage yelling rock.

I cannot fathom why this is on the list. It's not bad, but it's pretty unnoteworthy.

A band new to me. By no means a poor album — it’s competently put together — but it left very little impression on me. Not a single track stood out, and the whole thing rather faded into the background as it went on. The real irony came afterwards: when Spotify slipped into random mode, the next Girls Against Boys song it served up was far more striking than anything on the album itself. In short, perfectly listenable, but instantly forgettable.

Very random album to show up here. Never heard of these guys. Pretty mediocre singing/growling thats scratchy and garbled most of the time. Musically, it's fine-ish: some of it was interesting, most was not. It's all just pretty harsh sounding and not in a good way. Standout tracks were maybe "In Like Flynn," "Learned It," and "Billy's One Stop" although nothing really stood out, nor would I really want to listen to any of this album again. My main problem with this album is just how utterly forgettable it all is. I kinda feel that way about all the post-whatever genres. It's just kinda dull in the end. This one gets a 2 from me because I'm very much not in the mood for it today.

The music was pretty good, but the vocals were tuneless, often whispered, sometimes loudly, but indecipherable.

Dark and depressing

Kind of Grungy, kind of NIN - That is to say - very 90s! Learning a bit more about how this came kind of from the Fugazi camp is interesting, as I do not hear 'punk' like that per se. It has a sleezy vibe to it and some thumping baselines. Nothing really clicked for me but I can dig it.

Hard rock as in hard to enjoy

Some dude talking into a trench coat.
