Really loved the sound of this album but I cannot tell you a single word that was sung

Ambient and fun. Couldn’t tell you a single song or every word that stood out.

Nothing wrong with the album. It’s fine. But it’s nebulous.

What a bizarre album. And yet, I loved it. Reminded me of Enigma.

The vocals remind me a bit of Kate Bush, but a little too ethereal. Maybe I need to listen to this on headphones. I feel like it's too... thin. It could be the production style from the 80s, too. It just seems like there needs to be a bit more bass to it, like in a song like "Domino," it needs a big bass sound to it, and it's lacking. Many of the songs felt like they blended together. I couldn't really give you one that stood out over the others, which is never good. The vocals from one song sounded like it could easily go to another song. Really, it just didn't hold my interest. Next.

I recognize the band name and the parts of the song Lorelei, but nothing else. They must've came up randomly after I was listening to other 80's acts. Elizabeth Fraser sounds a bit like Kate Bush, only stranger. I never thought I would say that. I also hear some Siouxsie, which Fraser may have been going for given her adoration. I just don't know about this album, or group. Pioneers, but leading to two genres I don't really like - dream pop and shoegaze. So kudos, I guess? Sure, put wispy sounds together with fairy-like singing and it can work. But not always, and there were definitely times where I felt the music and vocals didn't fit right. I know their 1990 album is coming on the 1,001 list so maybe that one will impress me more. I just couldn't get into this.

This is too twee for me. I am sure that the drum machine sounded great in 1984, but it sounds pretty tame now. I love the idea of this band, from growing up listening to John Peel and hearing them so much, but the tracks here lack any oomph, or spine. Sugar Hiccup is a lovely tune, but there is none of that here - it's an amorphous blur. It's probably meant to drift by without much ado, but it all merged into one after a while. The mannered titles didn't help.

This was over before I realised it. It was there in the background whilst I was tap, tap, tapping away on other projects. It didn't leave much of an impression or distraction. Not offensive, but not something that grabbed me by the balls and demanded that I give it my full attention.

This felt like it should be my vibe cuz all the ethereal bits but I just couldn't get super into it.

It's a shame most people hear Heaven or Las Vegas first since it sets the standard so high for their other albums but there's something so fun about their one of a kind sound melding with more conventional songwriting devices that make this a super super fun listen for me :)

The lead singer Liz is very talented, and the songs are ethereal and well crafted. But synth heavy at times (it was the 80's), and the mixing was weird at times. Could barely hear the lead singer on some songs.

Dreamy. Floaty. Pretty. Ahead of its time by a _lot_. I really like this album. I understand that it's not for everybody, but it is definitely for me.

Fucking VAR, man

First time through I was perplexed, but then it grew on me. Then I felt like the world was a better place through their musings and I'm genuinely glad I heard this. I'm not sure if I would ever listen again, but worth the listen :)

Felt like I was in an 80s coming of age movie where the protagonist is a little twisted but we root for em anyway. I enjoyed lots!

This album doesn’t at all sound like something you’d normally hear in the 80s, really unique. However, most of the songs are monotonous and a bit one note. The last two songs have great soundscapes in there though. It’s ok.

You want to know what hides behind the subgenre 'dream pop'? Well, here you have it. 'Treasure' is the most well-known example of this genre that gave people of the late 80s and then 90s room to breathe in this new world why also highlighting the mysterious aspects of it. It is no wonder why songs of this album got often used in films (like 'Lorelei' in 'Mysterious Skin'). Listen to this!

Eh should stay in the 80s.

I don't remember much of this album, so it can't be that good.

I just genuinely don’t understand this music. Ethereal 80s pop? I don’t really understand the appeal or the lyrics or what’s happening. Are they singing in a different language? Or is it some made up fairy language? I can appreciate the musicality, but at the end of the day this just isn’t for me. Blessedly the album is fairly short which keeps it from being a 1.

So it turns out that any preconception I had about the Cocteau Twins is completely false as now I have listened to them, I actually doubt I've ever really listened to anything by them before. Entirely fitting the shoegaze genre, this is ethereal, dreamy alternative pop. At times Kate Bush-esque and even Chapterhouse on account of the undecipherable vocals. All in all a bit of a musical education.

10/10 Cocteau Twins has gotta be one of my favorite shoegaze bands

I'm a fan. The vinyl of this one is in the garage. Such a unique approach and sound. Ambient music really had fallen off from the last Eno records until these guys showed up. The gibberish / made up language sounds really add something and make this truly unusual. I'm reminded of Jerry Garcia saying something like the Grateful Dead didn't want to be the best at what they did, they wanted to be the only ones doing what they did.

Album was very enjoyable on my walk. Although I doubt it'd ever make it onto the car ride playlist, I liked it.

"Treasure" is the third studio album by Scottish alternative rock band Cocteau Twins. This is the album where the band totally embraced their ethereal sound. I liked the genre descriptions of ethereal wave and dream pop. It's also the album where they locked in their core members of vocalist Elizabeth Fraser, guitarist Robin Guthrie and bassist Simon Raymonde. Commercially, it hit #29 in the UK and was critically well received. A strumming guitar and bass begin "Ivo." Fraser's heavenly voice comes in and then another Fraser voice enters and we get their signature layered vocals. A good song which gets better in the next song "Lorelei." No, not a Styx cover song. Bells ringing and guitar sounding like an ambulance. The main vocals are higher with the backing vocals lower. One of their best songs. "Persephone" has an electric drum beat and a rock, slashing guitar...very 80's post punk sounding. It's dramatic and hypnotic. Fraser almost screaming. "Amelia" is haunting. A melodic, dark guitar. A slower beat. We even get a guitar solo. The mix on "Aloysius" is louder and cleaner. A lighter guitar. A nice song. A church-like organ opens the closer "Donimo." There's a church sounding choir. The song picks up a beat and it's intensity increases. Maybe, Fraser's best song vocally. This is a very good album. Each song creates an atmosphere and is unique within a dreamy and chill framework. The guitar sets the tone. Fraser's layered vocals are an instrument in and of themselves. A high recommendation.

Start is a bit fuckin weird and meandering. Track 1 alternates between beautiful & haunting and flat out annoying as fuck Lorelei is pretty good Beatrix is creepy and interesting Persephone is bluesy and heavy. Twin peaks roadhousey Pandora is dream pop incarnated. Gorgeous Donimo closer is solid beautiful melancholy. I haven’t understood a single goddamn word on this album. The album got off to a weak start—Ivo is one of the most annoying tracks I’ve heard. Ended up being a sweet, eery melancholy great dream pop album. A great pick to put on a night road trip. Gives me vibes of late nights before the sleep takes over just before the sun rises.

Ethereal, pretty, but also a bit vague. Good listen, but didnt blow me away and none of the songs stood out.

This is excellent, better than Heaven or Las Vegas which I’m a lot more familiar with. This is a one I can see myself listening to a lot more: it really nails that whole dream pop/shoe gaze sound, while still having lots of interesting things going on around it. Especially on Lorelei, Pandora, and Cicely. There’s a couple of tracks that didn’t do a lot for me, but even after a few more listens they started to grow (Otterley, Amelia). Would give this a 4.5 but gonna round up to a 5

Never heard any shoegaze outside of my bloody valentine before. Wasn't sure what to expect, it doesn't really sound like MBV to me. I enjoyed a lot of it though, feels a bit ahead of its time for 1984. Hard to describe it, it was quite light and breezy in some places and then dark and heavy in others, singing sounded like Kate Bush. Reminded me of bits of more modern indie/pop in places but mostly quite unique. Sounds a bit raw, hope their big album comes up on the list so I can properly judge. 3.5.

A heck of a lot more interesting than Heaven or Las Vegas. A bit less up itself, if that makes sense. Still a bit daft for me, but Persephone was decent.

This sounded exactly the same as the previous Cocteau Twins album so I'm just going to copy/paste that review: The album has a very psychedelic and dream like sound which I was not a fan of. I really struggled to get through all of the tracks. I'm sure it was intentional but I hated the production/mixing because at times it felt like they were singing in another language.

I think my experience of the Coteau Twins is Pearly Dewdrops Drop and that's about it. This album was of the same era and was pretty much as I expected it would be. Lots of ethereal singing and atmospheric music that never got dull but wasn't enough for a full five stars.

Another from the Cocteau Twins, wasn't expecting it but I'm kind of glad I can say I've listened to more than just the big one. But I've learned that the big one is the big one for good reason. This one, while decent, just doesn't create the same heavenly space that the other does. A few solid tracks that I enjoyed, but not nearly as dreamy or transportive as I would've hoped. Definitely still finding their sound here. Overall, it was alright. Favorite tracks: Donimo (intentional typo?), Lorelei, Pandora. Album art: Looks to be a mannequin behind a lacy dress or something, the coloring effect makes it seem very gothic, like something ripped from Dimetrescu's mansion in Resident Evil Village. It's simple but I dig it. Font is excellent. 3/5

5/5. Beautiful and ethereal. Great dream pop. There is a driving sense to each song, making me feel like I'm walking toward an end goal only leave me hanging, wanting more. There is definitely some Latin American influence in some of these songs which they use to great effectiveness. Although it is sitting at a 4.5/5 for me, I'm bumping it up for the beautiful nature.

I actually like a lot of shoegaze stuff but I couldn't really do this. The non-lyrics had the opposite effect, constantly bringing my attention to it rather than letting me get lost in the music. Might have been the prototype which launched a decent genre, but knowing what came since makes this sound very disappointing on reflection

If I didn't know what "ethereal" meant, I'd describe this as ghostly, haunting, eerie, soft, flighty, and other words I don't know the meaning of. This should be the soundtrack to my dreams.

Really surprised this... certainly didn't realize that most of this was vocalizing instead of understandable lyrics. The sound is pretty unique and evocative. It has a haunting ethereal quality that is very cool. Greatly enjoyed.

No, no I don't think so. This is so bland and boring that it borders on frustrating. But it never quite makes it to frustrating. Which is a shame because then I'd have at least felt SOMETHING for these songs. What a useless waste of time.

Wow that was a good album. Easy to listen too with lots of subtleties and great vocals.

This is the most 80's records I've ever heard. Was it recorded in a cave? The reverb just drips off every instrument. All the songs sound the same too.

I had a difficult time enjoying this album as it just felt like poppy background music to a positive movie. Dream pop is an interesting genre to me and I’ve had a hard time enjoying it. This album isn’t much different. 3.0/10

I enjoy this album, but it's not on the same level as Heaven or Las Vegas for me. It has a great overall sound and mood, but some of the songs aren't particularly memorable. Elizabeth Fraser's voice is as fantastic as ever though. HOWEVER, that album cover is hideous.

This album feels like something I will like even more over time. The dreamy ethereal pop of the Cocteau Twins has been incorporated into so much modern pop that this album sounds like it could have been released in the past few years. I especially enjoyed the repetition and successive building as the songs developed. The melodies are also top notch, I will definitely add this to my list of albums to listen to again.

I appreciated that this was a change from male-led rock, and I liked the simultaneously old school and otherworldly track names. However, the music itself wasn't my thing. It sounded like one long song.

This was a beautiful album. Lorelei is the highlight, but there were no real lowlights - save maybe for the dreaminess blurring into itself after a while, but that's not the worst thing really.

Holy moly, wow. This is incredible. A side is literally perfect. I've started the B-sides and they're proving to be as magical as the A Side. This album is something very special. The last two tracks slightly lose momentum from the rest of the album. But on their own, they are still brilliant songs. This is the first album I am giving 5 stars to which I have only heard once all the way through. Usually I need a good few listens or some familiarity of the album beforehand to award the prestigious 5 stars. I'd heard Lorelai before but knew nothing of the rest of the album. Overall. This album? It lives up to it's title... this is music to treasure.

I don't know what it is that I want from the Cocteau Twins that I don't get. But I don't get it. It seems like all the ingredients are right there. But they always make rhubarb pie instead of, like, the pumpkin pie the I'm after? It's like the music I want is just one room over? Because I listen to this and it's all there, but it's also not. And I can't get my head around it.

What the hell is this? Something for when Enya gets a bit too intense? Whatever, three stars.

Absolutely incredible artistry that is equally as haunting and beautiful as it is unique. I can feel this becoming a quick favorite. These songs push the boundaries of the common verse/chorus/verse song structure and are almost completely unintelligible, but still feel warm and inviting. I might be going out on a limb here, but I'm getting the same chilling and avant-garde vibes that bands like Pink Floyd created before and on the other side, bands like The Mars Volta carried over into the aughts. I'm sold. Man... I just love this project so much. As cheesy as it sounds, there is so much beautiful music to be discovered and this just made my whole damn week.

Listened Before? N I remember these two from the 80s. It's very mellow and echoey. I do like the concept of the albums songs being a bunch of different girl names but otherwise unremarkable. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Lorelei

Second album by Cocteau Twins, it's quite interesting sound, gothic mixed with 80s pop and with a tiny bit of shoegaze for some additional taste. I kind of liked it, but I would rather move on to another album now.

I don't get their importance, even if I don't consider it an awful album. I enjoy the non-English insertions on some songs and the album's general mood, but it is still too much repetitive. 2 starts for me

otherworldly, the sound of angels come to earth

There's nothing quite like the CT and this, the 3rd album is pretty typical. They'd lost the punkyness of the first 2 and did the ethereal thing. Beautiful stuff.

I liked this much more that I though. It is dream-poppy and spacey at times. I would not mind revisiting this at some point.

Album 15 of 1001 Cocteau Twins - Treasure Favorite Track : Pass Rating : 1 / 5 All songs sounded the same. Not my thing. Kind of a mess, in my opinion. The "related" music that Spotify offered after it finished was interesting.

I was okay when this started but lost when it finished. It felt like a marshmallow: good enough but not very substantive, and gone quickly.

My first experience listening to Cocteau Twins was in the past year or so. I can't remember if I sought them out intentionally, or if one of their songs came up randomly for me on Spotify, but I've listened to all of 'Heaven or Las Vegas,' and I really love it. I enjoyed this album too, albeit a little less than 'Heaven or Las Vegas.' I'm a huge fan of dream pop, so this was right up my alley. I love the icy, ethereal feel of the instrumentation, and that they achieve this not just with keyboards, but with percussive sounds too. I also love that Elizabeth Fraser's voice acts as an instrument on these songs as well. The band really created a beautiful piece of music from start to finish on this album, and I really want to listen to even more of their work. I hesitate to give this album five stars, and it's only because I feel like 'Heaven or Las Vegas' is a showcase of what they can really do, and that the band was still crafting some of their sound on 'Treasure.' I know that sounds kind of shitty of me, but it's just the way I feel. This is still a wonderful album, but it's just not a five star one to me.

I want to like this more, but eventually this album felt repetitive. I wish I could have understood the lyrics more, because that might have helped. Overall this was like listening to a lot of beautiful and ethereal singing by haunted dolls who couldn’t really enunciate much.

Best Song: Pandora (For Cindy). Bubbly and ethereal. Sounds like fairies singing in a language no one understands. Worst Song: Otterley. It turns out you can be too atmospheric. Overall: Music that feels completely alien, but at least the aliens seem kind of friendly? At least not immediately violent. It really feels like the artist is experiencing an entire range of emotions that I don't even know the names of. sleepy rain music.

Yeah it's cool. Great bones. Cool sounds. I bet if I listened a couple more times I could even start telling one song from another!!

An ethereal wonderland of songs - making you question meaning whilst making you feel as though you're heading out on a mystical adventure. Brilliant layering of instruments and special effects. I shall be listening to more of their back catalogue.

Imagine the nightmares this must have caused back in 1984. Who was ready for this?! Almost 40 years after its release Treasure still sounds completely otherworldly. An ethereal journey from start to finish. Glad this isn’t the only Cocteau Twins album on this list!

Oh man. After Leonard Cohen I was hoping for a nice rock or metal album. Hell I could have gone something pop or even jazz or swing. Instead we get this... Oh man. I needed to check if my ears were bleeding multiple times.

This was interesting, and sounded a lot like Kate Bush. Not bad!

Actually pretty relaxing

A little bit dream, a little bit shoegazy, dense opressive guitars, wonderfully lush vocals. There's so much to love about this album and what a fascinating and important stop on the road to Shoegaze and subsequently Post-Rock. That being said it falls down a very specific and unfortunate set of cracks when it comes to being a "good" album. The drum machine sounds are criminal in the way that they could only get away with without irony in the 80's. Bizarrely in a lot of places the drums totally work and sync up with the dreamy vibe of the rest of it but more often than not it just clashes horribly. What would have worked is using all the distortion and reverb they could get their grubby little hands on to make those digital drums sound even more bleak and industrial. Similarly I think that some of the vocals could have been mixed a bit better, that's saying nothing against the performance which is great but unlike contemporaries mbv the vocals stand out against the rest of the textures, music this dreamy should have the vocals swimming in a soup of guitar and effects. Both of those issues were likely just because this is such an early example of this kind of dream pop that they were still working out how to do it. But I can also see why the band think its unfinished, sometimes the songwriting doesn't seem to go anywhere and some vocal drum or guitar parts feel like they could have done with a rewrite to make them a bit more interesting. That being said I'm judging this overly harshly because its really great and fantastic fun to dissect. I find this very evocative because you could trace so many of my favourite sounds and tropes in music to this exact time. I'll definitely come back to this one.

This was unmemorable for me. I think it was gentle enough to be able to listen to its entirety, however too snoozy.

Starts off on with a nice dreamy, ethereal feel but something is lost along the way here.... This is the second Cocteau Twins album we've had and while the mood if not the sound is similar, I'm not connecting nearly as much with this one. The other/later one (1990's "Heaven Or Las Vegas") has a much better sound to it - almost like this one is a demo that needs a remix, especially with the drums/percussion - too often it sounds like a bad driver backing into the garage. Distracting at best. I'm ok with this being mood/background music but much prefer their later material. 4/10 2 stars.

Some songs were cool but also very haunted

Ethereal shoegaze/dreampop is my jam, and these folks basically invented the genre. That said, I haven't actually listened to them that much - they were a bit before my time, I guess? I listened to this through twice and found a couple of the tracks to be standouts - especially Lorelei. The sounds are layered and crunchy and yet always light and dreamy too. Really enjoyed, would definitely listen again.

This is simple. It's one of the greatest albums of all time, in my opinion and to my ears. When my first child was born I gave my wife a list of Cocteau Twins songs to choose from and so "Lorelei" is her middle name. A sweeping, storming wall of sonic perfection. I have no idea what she is singing about but it doesn't matter. It's genius. 10/5

I had always assumed they were an Irish band, but apparently they are Scottish. As I’ve never listened that carefully, I had also assumed that they were singing in Galic but it is in fact English. The least popular song on the album is track 8, “Cicely” with almost 1.3M plays, whilst the most popular is track 2, “Lorelei” with over 20M plays on Spotify. Overall the album has a beautiful, calm and ethereal feel to it. If you’re analysing the lyrics, then you will be missing out on the feel of the thing. The songs all seem quite profound in dealing with various aspects of life, love, loss and so on. Listen Again?: Yes My Rating: ****

I'm not really sure what to say about this album. After listening to the first few songs on the album I was extremely confused on how this was considered music. But then about halfway through Persephone, it clicked. As soon as Pandora started playing I began to appreciate the music. Then after a quick look at the Wikipedia article, and seeing that this actually defined the dream pop genre, I think it really warmed me up to the album. Despite not understanding a single word other than "Here's what it takes", this really is an insanely great piece of music. I was initially going to give it 3/5 but after letting the music breathe for a bit, I'm giving it a 4/5. Favorite Tracks: Pandora (For Cindy), Donimo

Listening to this, I'm thinking to myself "This is music for sex isn't it? They've gone out to create sex music. And they're twins. Ew." Turns out that thankfully they're not twins at all so the sex bit is less uncomfortable. This album is quite a lot like sex in that I don't get it. Other people, who do get it, seem to love it.

First time listening to Treasure but was actually listening to Heaven or Las Vegas earlier in the week (my own choice not through this project) This is a beautiful album one you can really get lost in. Maybe being harsh but heaven or Las Vegas does feel the more Complete album, which is stopping me giving treasure the full 5 stars. But more than deserves it’s place on the list and will be added to my regular rotation, just falls slightly short of the perfect album status.

So dreamy. Strangely Ivo doesn't really capture me but once Lorelei kicks in I fall in love all over again.

Vibes

I loved Heaven or Las Vegas when this generator assigned it to me, so I was pretty excited for this album. It's crazy to me that they had this sound in 1984. I'm so used to shoegaze being an early 90's thing. Not every song is something catches my attention, and it's not as good as Heaven or Las Vegas, but it's still solid. The singer's voice really fits for this type of music. I wonder if I'd like other albums from this band. My favourite songs were Lorelie and Pandora (For Cindy).

This was a nice album. I'm close to a 4 but the dreamy stuff got to me.

According to Elizabeth Frazer, what words sound like is more important than what they actually mean, which might explain why she uses non-words and foreign language words that she doesn’t know the meaning of in her songs. Looking up her lyrics on any of the wiki-lyric sites a good way to get your daily smile. I love the 4 songs that start with Lorelei – Pandora (for Cindy) being the standout, for me, but the Souxsie and the Banshees-like guitar in Persephone is great too. My co-judge says that this doesn’t sound dated at all and I agree. There has been a lot of dream pop/ethereal/shoe gaze/downtempo recorded over the 3+ decades since, but in 1984, this was pretty unique, and it still is.

The Twins are the OG dream-pop band that influenced other bands such as This Mortal Coil (who I love), Beach House and shoegaze bands such as My Bloody Valentine (who give me a headache). TIL from Wiki that they're Scottish, which explains why I don't understand a word that they're singing, although that's probably intentional since their style is an ethereal wall of sound and a tapestry of echoey and dreamy vocals. Since 1,001 lets us listen to a lot of bands from years ago, I've noticed that some music sounds so dated while others can stand the test of time and sound fresh as ever. Unfortunately the music by the Cocteau Twins sounds very dated today.

Based on the song titles this is some vaguely mythological concept album but honestly the only things I’ll remember from this are that it’s much heavier than cherry colored funk and that the cover reminds me of that slipknot album

An acquired taste, but I've acquired it, so that's fine. Not as accessible as Heaven or Las Vegas, but still really very good.

As it turns out, they are not actually twins and there’s 3 people in this band. Talk about false advertising. I kid, but I always kind of wondered if there were actual twins in this band. There aren’t, but, I swear*, I’m not going to let that have an effect on my review. Treasure is an enjoyable, ahead of its time dream-pop record. Its influence on modern indie is undeniable. If you’re a Stereolab fan, like me, I think you’ll find quite a few similarities between the ‘Lab and Cocteau Twins, especially on a track like “Pandora (for Cindy)”. (Full Disclosure: I’m partially hoping that a positive rating and Stereolab mention will bump up Stereolab in the generator’s recommendation queue for my account) Like a lot of British indie/underground of the 80’s, Treasure is a little overly dramatic and maudlin sounding, but makes up for it with interestingly layered vocals and beautiful guitar work. A thoroughly enjoyable 4 out of 5. *Deducted 1 star for not having any twins in the band

Great, jangly, atmospheric, almost shoegazey Scottish Baroque goth. If you like it, you'll love it. It's not a melodic album without being relaxing, and perhaps a smidge one dimensional but it's also completely joyful, self-confident and of its moment. It edges a four because I've been giving out too many threes.

Beautiful, dark, romantic, and ethereal. This is one of my favorite albums, with masterpieces from start to finish. Frazer speaks in a mixture of English, Latin, and Gaelic among others, using the beauty of language as the primary instrument itself. The guitars echo and create a wave of noise that create space in this otherworldly reality her music is set in. It's optimistic but cold in a gothic romanticized manner. There are some dance tracks like "Lorelai", some emotionally dramatic tracks like "Persephone" or "Amelia", and some that put you in an neverending trance like "Pandora." The simplicity of the song titles, minimal instrumentation, and lack of sensical lyrics place an emphasis on the organized structures of the songs and their linked coherency. It doesn't follow any form of conventional pop structure, so you never know where the song's headed next, but you're pulled in every second. Second half moves into more unconventional, intricate ambient compositions. "Aloysius" is melancholic, calm while still dramatic. "Cicely" is the hardest and coldest song on the album, marked by fast rhythmic drum beats and wailing guitars. "Otterley" is characterized by whipsers and the sound of waves on an eery and desolate beach, haunted by ghosts and sirens. We end with the angelic and satisfying "Donimo", a gorgeous teary closer. I agree with this track ordering, although I could see how some could lose focus in these last few. I find it to be flawless from start to finish, and one I revisit for all sorts of occasions.

Such a nice overall vibe, nice production, lyrics, instrumental - Masterpiece.

The atmosphere on this album is unique and fantastic. A magnificent cross between their more gothic side and their more dream pop side. The timbre of the instruments is always particularly well put together to accompany this voice and these distinct words. This album is a nice breath of fresh air despite being dark. Absolutely love it.

Dream pop with unintelligible lyrics. This should just irritate me with tweeness. But it doesn't. There's some truly intriguing sounds here. My attention started to wander, however.

How was this album made in the early 80s? It feels so ahead of it's time, specially in its production quality. It is such a beautiful, soothing album. The onlyproblem I have with it is that some songs drag out for too long.

Okay album. I liked the strange Greco-Roman theme to the album, but at the same time they sounded like they were speaking latin through the whole thing. I don't know how to describe this album but I enjoyed a lot the mysticism around all songs. Also, the voice in all the song are just part of the music, that's why the lyrics aren't too complex.

At its worst…well, there’s a reason I gave up on the entire album in the middle of track 6. What frustrates me is that I caught hints of greatness, but they were [often quickly] obscured by overproduction or overpowered by abrasive vocals. I know Wheeler has earned a lot of praise for her voice, but from time to time it felt like an homage to Yoko Ono — it totally ruined Persephone for me. This is the first album of the challenge that I “don’t get.”

It's alright, not something I'd listen on my free time

A smooth soothing, dreamy quality to the music, that had it's moments, but mainly unspectacular and unmemorable. Not hard to listen to, so I guess that's a positive, but I can't say I would purposely listen to this again. Reminds me of why I avoided a chunk of the 80's, synth pop with drum machines, no thanks!

OK, maybe *Heaven Or Las Vegas* should be included in an ideal list of 1001 albums, even if some of its instrumentations have aged quite poorly--it's a bane that many eighties LPs have after all, and three decades later, one could argue that such dated instrumentations are also adding a layer of quaint charm to the whole thing. Not so sure about *Treasure*, though, which is plagued by similar problems--even if its own gated drums are here closer to goth shenanigans than the more overproduced affair that *Heaven Or Las Vegas* is. Yep, hardcore Cocteau Twins fans will tell you the contrary, thay will certify that those goth shenanigans are what makes this one closer to a purer version of the band. But when two thirds of said band have disowned your favorite album by them, it seems that there is some of misunderstanding at play between artists' intents and their target audience. In a way, I'm tempted to side with the band here, given that the two albums that followed, the far less famous *Victorialand* and *Blue Bell Knoll*, have at least aged more gracefully production-wise. Besides, I'm not so sure about how Liz Fraser herself feels about this one. Maybe 100% of the band members actually hate *Treasure*, who knows? All those considerations aside, I guess that what the fans fell in love with on that record are the impressive vocal feats performed by Fraser. One gets the sense that there are no bounds she is reluctant to tackle and even explode on *Treasure*. But this blessing might also come with a curse given that Liz's voice admittedly risks becoming grating on some tunes. Yes, she is a gifted and adventurous vocalist. But "adventurous" often becomes *overkill* on *Treasure*. At some point she even goes to a yodelling mode, and it's easy to see why such Meredith Monk-like vocal feats won't sit well with each and every listener out there. You could even suspect they might even serve a hidden purpose: to convey how insubtantial and/or purely mechanical Cocteau Twins' music sounds at times... So my overall take is that *Treasure* is a mixed bag. Too bad, it kicked off with two catchy tunes, *Ivo* and *Lorelei*... But unless your mind and ears are stuck in 1984, what might have been new and exciting back then may now sound awkward or clunky. So next, please. Had this album on constant play back in the 80s, but I hadn't revisited the whole thing in probably 30 years. Absolutely lovely, one of the great albums of that era. I agree with those who say that some of the technological aspects of this album's sound seem a bit dated. But you can't argue with that vibe, which sounds rather timeless. Darkly lovely, exotic and ethereal music. Gorgeous, haunting arrangements and one of the most striking uses of vocals I've ever heard. This is an outstanding album by one of the most unique and influential bands in music, arguably their best. 19/08/2022 Cocteau Twins – Treasure 4.5/5 Great surprise! I hadn’t heard about Cocteau Twins before, but their impact in dream pop and the influence they have accomplished in other musicians is quite clear after listening to this album. It has been like exploring the ancient foundation documents of an established civilization. I really liked the music of the band: the ethereal sounds, the experimentation with sound and singing, and the voice of the vocalist, Elizabeth Fraser (that I also discovered is the singer in “Song of the Siren” of The Mortal Coil); that is almost celestial. The only bad thing about the album, in my opinion, is the bad production and low quality of the sound of the tracks, so it is better enjoyed with headphones. Ivo – 5/5 Great guitars, great ambience, great voice. It creates a great atmosphere of mystery and etherealness. My favourite track of the album. Lorelei – 3.5/5 I’m surprised of how you can create such a complex sound landscape with so little production and not too many instruments. Still a bit dissonant in my opinion. Beatrix – 4/5 “Kate Bush meets Egypt” vibes. I really like how each song creates its own atmosphere, transferring you to different environments. Persephone – 4.5/5 A more “rockish” song, closer to what The Cranberries did in the 90’s. Elizabeth knows how to work with her voice in different contexts, giving different textures and sounds. Pandora (for Cindy) – 5/5 The mixture of different sounds the band creates in this song is perfect, not going anywhere too complicated. Again, a highlight for Elizabeth. Amelia – 3.5/5 This song doesn’t work for me as the others, but it is still good creating a different atmosphere. Aloysius – 4.5/5 Love the guitars in this song. Not any more to say, but I loved it. Cicely – 3/5 Probably my least liked song, but not because of its flaws, but because I don’t really connect with the ambience it creates. Otterley – 4/5 It sounds more like an interlude that anything else. But it accomplishes a very relaxing and evolving atmosphere, almost like you are underwater. Donimo – 4/5 Good ending track, and a great conclusion to the album.

Not really listened to the Cocteau Twins before - although Lorelei must have popped on Spotify as I'd liked it. This was a lovely album to listen to - really dreamy. Loved everything about it.

This a pretty weird one and most definitely not what I expected. I remember getting some songs by Cocteau Twins on spotify playlists related to atmospheric/ambient trip-hop music. Therefore, I had them mentally pegged more in that corner than in any post-punk corner. Maybe they are very different album to album, maybe they're just doing their own thing and are hard to classify. Be that as it may, I quite liked the instrumental but found the percussion rather tinny and didn't like the vocals too much. Dreamy, yes. But not not in the 'floaty', relaxing manner I'd prefer. Definitely OK background music and I know that I quite enjoy some of their other tracks on playlists that I like. But this album isn't really right for me.

Definitely an interesting sound and style here. Elizabeth Fraser's voice is wonderfully haunting. Some of the tracks (e.g., Pandora) have a real nice sense of melody and countermelody that caught my attention. This band composes and performs quite well. At times, the drum machine sounded a little harsh to my ear, but that's a personal preference. I get it as an artistic choice to punctuate the songs. Overall, I liked this album.

Not my favorite, and I think it shows the tendency of this list to focus on the UK too much.

What a great album and sound. I definitely hear resonance with Kate Bush and The Innocence Mission. Even The Cure. I really think this is outstanding and enjoyable. Unique vocals, solid dark guitar and very nice strong basslines.

Surprisingly good. I went in with low expectations but this was pretty cool.

Spacey and etherial. I've never really been a fan but I could see why it might appeal. 3 stars cause it's interesting, even if I don't love it.

23rd June 2022 Finished on the 24th, still in bed. Circumstances are everything when doing this and being bed bound with an intense fever means this was not up there for me. Approach to vocals interesting though

really liked this album, you can see the direction the group is moving in and how they were pioneers of dreampop. this has some flaws, it’s no heaven or las vegas, which is why it’s a 4, but it’s a very high 4

I want to like this, but too ethereal.

I really liked this album! Ethereal, otherworldly, perfect for a certain kind of mood.
