Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Wasn't sure what to expect. Quite liked the sound initially, but felt too samey over the course of the album. 80s alt rock with ethereal female vocal.

Good album, not a fan of the sound of the drums

I don't know what I was expecting to hear, but it certainly wasn't this! Quite a pleasant surprise, and a good listen. Did find it dragged on a bit towards the end and I think the first half was a lot stronger than the second. But well worth the listen. Reminded of BCNR towards the end actually.

Donnie darko ass album

Cocteau Twins are fun to listen to every now & then but they're not a daily thing. I preferred Heaven or Las Vegas. Treasure didn't have quite the same staying power.

I prefer the other album

i didn’t really know what to expect going into this i think but it wasn’t this. didn’t love it but it wasn’t bad or anything

This one is very atypical. I like the parts that's more Gothic ambiance but then mostly dislike the parts that are more dream-pop Standouts Otterley 3/5

What is this? Music for ghosts? It's actually kinda cool.

A innovative band that arguably ushered in both dream pop and shoegaze, the Twins have never been my favorite flag carriers of either genre. More atmospheric mood music than performative pop, the indecipherable lyrics, wailing vocal delivery, and irritatingly artificial electronic drums all drenched in excessive reverb don’t create for me the mesmerizing, “ethereal” vibe that other reviewers cite - it’s just a style that seems alternately pompous and unnecessary. The songwriting is hit or miss - it would improve markedly on the subsequent “Heaven or Las Vegas” - but here for every “Lorelei” there’s an “Otterlay”. At their greatest heights this band approaches, grandeur, but this album is not that.

7.5-8/10 - very eerie

Sian would give 4

Low tempo and chill album. Ethereal vocals and melodies. Not the greatest for a long focus session since it makes me just want to sleep at a certain point but very beautiful and relaxed.

Interesting. Atmospheric. Elizabeth Fraser is the star here. Her vocals are excellent. Not all the songs work but there's enough quality to give it a passing grade even though it's not totally my thing.

I did not dislike, and had some nice movements but generally did not resonate with me. Not the biggest dream pop fan generally, but there some gems.

Unique with some compelling moments but lacked variety overall and began to feel repetitive.

I liked this. 3.75

Enjoyed more than expected; mostly some of the harmonic stuff. Sometimes pretty boring.

I didn't mind this in the background today, a bit repetitive after a while but not bad.

Undoubtedly beautiful, evocative and atmospheric but pretty unmemorable

This feels like a soundtrack to a Tim Burton movie. Reminds me of Imogen Heap lyric wise, its okay, not my thing but I can see the value.

Don't think I'll return, but good.

I don't know what to think of this. It felt like a trancier version of Enya. It would make good background music for brain work, but I don't think I could put it into rotation for much else. It's not bad, just a little weird.

For as much as I liked their Heaven or Las Vegas album, this one was not the same caliber. It's experimentally interesting and darker, but doesn't have the same beauty.

Heavenly vocals that defined the sound of the band. This is the record that put them on the map.

Okay 80s

Treasure has a great atmosphere and that’s consistent all the way through. A combination of Dream Pop and Post Punk at times. Those are the highlights for me. Persephone is a masterpiece but the dreamier parts of the album run on 7.6/10

Getting some prog rock vibes from this group, but I guess they don't fall into that genre? I had a hard time getting into this album fully because the vocals varied wildly from song to song. They either fit well and enhanced the song (Lorelei, Amelia) or stood out in a bad way, which was on most of the songs. I kind of don't know what to make of this one really. It fell into the background while I was working, but I didn't have a strong desire to go back and listen to it again. The music was fine and the vocals were hit or miss. Probably land at a low-to-mid 3.

Kind of forgot that I was listening to music at points because it was all just dreamy music that sounded all the same. Didn't hate it at all though just kind of did nothing special. Not being able to understand a single word also had an effect on that.

Ethereal pop/rock

I'm divided between pontuation of 3 and 4.

It was good weird.

Starting to understand the whole Cocteau Twins schtick. The 'lyrics' are irrelevant, the song titles are just words, the tunes are just vibes. It's all vibes. This one isn't as warm or compelling as Heaven or Las Vegas but it's cut from very similar cloth. It's just colder, a bit more sparse and spiky. I gave HoLV three stars but felt this strange compulsion to keep going back for more listens and eventually decided it needed an extra star so I edited my rating. Maybe that will prove to be the case here too but only time will tell. I don't mind it at all, but I can understand why they eventually decided to pack it in. There's only so long you can survive on vibes alone.

Extrait de la page wiki: "Record label executive Ivo Watts-Russell originally tried to hire Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois to produce the album. However, Eno felt the band did not need him and Guthrie ended up producing the album.[7] Pitchfork noted that the album's drum machine backing added a sharp edge in contrast to the band's ethereal sound and Elizabeth Fraser's "angelic vocals" Des sons cool (synth/drum machine/tones de guit, même la voix mixée super loin par moments) mais des sons cheaps! Assemblés tous ensemble ça fonctionne. Ya quand même des hook finalement

"(for Cindy)" ruins what might otherwise have been the most aesthetically pleasing slate of track titles from the last 200+ albums. hope it was worth it, cindy. this is a weird, ethereal, dreamy thing from the 80s. new to me. enjoyable but not a revelation. sometimes i couldn't tell if the lyrics were in english, in another language, or just dream-scat

Heel origineel geluid, maar op een gegeven moment heb je het ook wel gehoord.

Imagine proto-Shoegaze (without that particular genre's bent toward excess distortion) mixed with Kate Bush.

A little less Heaven and a little more Las Vegas iykyk fr.

Day526 - probably the best of the shoegaze genre. crazy that it’s forty years old

Didn't get a word of that

Important album. Not my jam.

Very easy on the ears but maybe a bit too easy, starts to feel dull

Argh. This is one of the unfortunate aspects of this collection and the seemingly obsessive decision to go all in on some artists: I never really disliked the Cocteau Twins back when they were a thing, but having already heard "Heaven or Las Vegas", I was only a couple of songs into this album and already dreading the next half-hour or so of that keening, jangly sound. But hey, at least this isn't the 19th Bjork album! And to be fair, both "Persephone" and "Amelia" have a somewhat different sound to them (only somewhat, but still), so perhaps they have a bit more range than I give them credit for. (Well, "had", I suppose, as it appears this album was the start of their "ethereal" phase; it might have been nice to get their earlier, non-ethereal music.) And "Lorelei" remains a quintessential track, for both good and otherwise (with "Donimo" a close second). It's tempting to give this album two stars just because it seems like overkill having two very-similar Cocteau Twins albums in the collection, but that doesn't seem fair to this album, which is perfectly fine for what it is.

Interesting...theatrical...arty

Solid listen, I prefer “Heaven or Las Vegas” but this was a good time. Trailblazers of “dream-pop”

Ivo: dark and creepy. Crazy background noises and vocals. Electric guitar on point. 6/10 Lorelei: creepy but happy vibes. Great drums. 8/10 Beatrix: organ/sinth is played. weird af. 3/10 Persephone: love the instrumental. traditional choirs. sad aura. 5/10 Pandora: love the background vocals and harmonies. very chill and fem. 9/10 Amelia: like the lirical vibes but boring 2/10 Aloysius: imagined myself in space. native language points. 5/10 Cicely: seems traditional but creepy 3.5/10 Otterley: instrumental + whispers. boring. 3.5/10 Donimo: ethereal AND tense. scary even. 8/10

I like their later stuff better, but Elizabeth Fraser could sing the phone book and make it sound good.

Non male, non male

363/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

On comprend que sans eux y'aurait pas eu Mylène Farmer mais bon c'est bof bof ?

I really thought I was going to like this one. Couldn’t understand a damn thing the chick was singing. I think I’m going to keep hanging out with the Thompson Twins instead.

Pas très bien vieilli mais pas entièrement désagréable

By all measures, I should like this album a lot. But the vocals were a bit too grating more often than not. Interesting production and songwriting throughout.

Quite a different listening experience. Heard of this group but never this deep.

Feel like I need more time with this one as it might have the potential to score higher but as it stands giving it a 3.5. Some really cool, ethereal sounding 80s sounds drenched in chorus and reverb. Drum machine backing gives it an almost eerie edge and vocals are amazing but can’t pick out any lyrics so its more of a background listen on first impressions. Revisit needed

Lorelei // Pandora //

Cocteau Twins have always been a blind spot for me. I have heard so much about them but have never really jumped in. This was a fun soundscape. Dreamy is the word that kept coming to mind. Very fun album.

One of the more interesting albums I've listened to during this venture. I can see why they call it dream-pop. The instrumentation is very ethereal, and often the vocalist isn't using any real language when singing. It's something I think I'll have to return to, as I don't think this is a listen to once album

A snooze fest ... but not necessarily a bad one? This album flew by, but part of it was because it was easy to ignore. There are sections of this album that are good that grab my attention, but I find there are sections where I'm totally tuned out (the ins and outs of ambient music I guess). I get ambient music, some people are into it, some aren't. I kinda fall in between where it's based on a mood, but also I really feel like there are ways to execute (at least in my opinion) good ambient music. Take for example one of the epitome's of post-rock, Godspeed You! Black Emperor. There are experimental sounds within their music that make the ambient sounds interesting and thoughtful and like "Wow, I've never heard this before." I feel like, I didn't get that vibe from this album. I could be wrong and I could have missed some parts, but that's my first impression.

I enjoyed this -- another group I've never heard of before this list.

Couldn’t understand a word, but the music was cool.

You’re getting sleepy…

A good sound, sounds a bit like an 80s Lana del Rey at times.

For some reason I’ve always thought the Cocteau Twins played electronic music, so I never bothered to check them out. Honestly, I don’t think I was really missing much. This album is fine, but I’m really not compelled to ever listen to it again.

Fine. Atmospheric. Again, I’m the wrong person to evaluate because it is not my genre. Unlike the last two, I probably will not dig deeper

Is it evocative dream pop? Or is it twee indie baby talk? I’m genuinely on the fence.

01) Ivo - 7,0 02) Lorelai - 7,0 03) Beatrix - 6,5 04) Persephone - 6,5 05) Pandora (for Cindy) - 7,0 06) Amelia - 6,0 07) Aloysius - 6,5 08) Cicely - 6,5 09) Otterley - 7,0 10) Donimo - 7,0 TOTAL: 6,70 (67/100) Current ranking: 370/537

Nice Flow.

I will easily grant that the vibe and overall sound of this album is very well done, and that it has great production value for the 80s. However, it feels more like an ambient track than something I would be drawn to listen to in any kind of regular rotation.

About on par with Heaven or Las Vegas but a bit more minimalistic. Similarly also, I can totally see why people enjoy this, but it's not really my thing. For atmospheric music, I would rather listen to post-rock or atmo-black metal; calm atmospheric music like dream pop/ethereal wave don't really do it for me. Shoegaze is pretty much a heavier version of dream pop, and I like it more also. This album is too relaxed and not very exciting, which I don’t really like. Still an enjoyable listen but didn’t blow me away. 7/10

This one had an interesting vibe to it.

Actually really liked. Will be listening again and almost gave it 4 I would buy this on vinyl but ultimately felt it only worked for a single mood. Ethereal sounding

Ambient tones. 7.7/10

Bijzondere muziek.

Lorelai rips. This album is goth as fuck.

Kind of a vibe but not the vibe I was feeling today

This was pleasant! Though I did find it getting a bit old by the end of the album.

decent

Mysterious, longing sound, I kinda dig it

Interesting music., Ethereal and melodic.

Blind album and artist. I've known for the name for years, and this project has presented a prime example of what I wanted to get out of this journey: try something new I have always wanted to try. Unfortunately this won't be an artist or an album I will return to often. Glad I tried it. Too dreamy for me, not my cup of tea.

definitely a unique album, though i liked their heaven or las vegas album a lot more. this one was a little murkier and less accessible to me, but there were a few cool tracks tossed in here with the others. i think i'd sooner revisit HoLV though favorites: lorelei, pandora (for cindy), donimo

I'm now Link in the "Zelda" series exploring a sacred building I just discovered. That, my friends, is this ethereal album in a nutshell. Favorite Track: "Beatrix".

3.1 3x

Not my cup of tea

Ik ben niet de grootste fan van de Cocteau Twins. Dees was niet slecht, maar meer dan 3 sterren heeft het toch ook niet.

odd in a good way

I've got to the point where I kind of admire if not really enjoy the Cocteau Twins. I can see they're doing something interesting and different within their space, but I'm not drawn to listen to more of it.

06/03/25 It was an okay album, nothing really sets it apart from the others.

Mostly a fun vibe, but uneven (seriously, who needs the burpy electronic rhythm of "Abernathy" butting into this album?).

I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either, I just clearly don’t get it. The whole album sounds like it was recorded in some mystical, echoing cave, with shimmering guitars and unintelligible vocals floating around like ghosts. There’s an otherworldly beauty to it, but it never fully clicks with me. I can appreciate the atmosphere, but it’s not something I'll find myself every coming back to.

Never listened to this group. Enjoyed it quite a lot without feeling the urge to listen to it again. Gave Heaven or Las Vegas a listen and liked it more

I like it sonically, it’s just missing that extra “something” for me.

There are some definite highs, but ultimately this album didn't grow on me as much as I'd hoped.

Not their best but an interesting listen

Pleasant, unremarkable. Would listen again.

Cocteau Twins are so weird for me. I always enjoy them while listening but nothing sticks. I’d probably never search them out to listen to. 3/5

A second Cocteau Twins album this week! Heaven or Las Vegas was a more coherent listen, but it was still fine. Liked it well enough, but it won't really stick in my rotation. Faves: Ivo, Aloysius.

Didn’t enjoy as much as Heaven or Las Vegas. Still appreciate what they were going for and I think they landed the plane on HoLV. Glad we got the other album first, this one could have been a bad initial introduction.

I enjoy a periodic record by them. I quickly hit my limit of how much I want to listen to them. But every once in awhile it’s enjoyable.

Solid,

I understand what's good about it. Definitely belongs on the list. But I'm not going to play it again. Especially the singing gets on my nerves. Favorite song: Cicely

Mostly mood. Probably has a place, but it's not in the standard rotation of things I'd listen to.

I think I enjoyed it, I'll have to listen to it a bit more.

Ethereal, dark and enchanting. The vocals are drenched in reverb and the music is eclectic and free form. The lyrics are spacey and of different (gibberish?) language but are engaging. Dark and haunting, but also existential. I like it, but I don’t have a relisten calling for it. Perhaps background music. It stated off as something I would really enjoy, but the depth does not necessarily resonate with me, while I will say the music is objectively good and fresh.

For 1984, this is impressive. Very ethereal and dreamy. Harmonic vocals with some dark, eerie synths in the background. Cool sounds throughout and the complementing vocals make this an enjoyable listen.

Thought this was a really interesting and fun listen

Very good stuff. Mad as a box of frogs but a delight.

Cinematic. Some Christmas sounding jungle bells stuff in here that turned me off. Maybe it’s worth another listen, but it didn’t interest me enough to clear my calendar for another chance. But maybe…

Al principio me pareció una tremenda innovación. Atmosférico, oscuro, una voz cautivadora. Pero se fue pinchando con el transcurso del álbum. Se rescata mucho y sobra mucho también.

This is a dark, majestic album, and I was surprised when I saw the release date — it sounds very ahead of its time. The album was a nice listen overall, and I can say that the dark melodies were fitting throughout. The composition and singing were beautiful. However, I felt like the mixing was subpar. It felt like I was listening to the whole album through a tube, and not all the sounds were very clear. There was almost a 'grainy' quality to the songs that I didn’t like. The drums and hi-hats sounded so stale at times that I found myself thinking, 'Why did they do that? It would sound so good if it was mixed and mastered with more attention.' Maybe it was their choice for artistic purposes to keep the album sounding this way, but for me, it just leaves me wondering what an amazing album this could have been if it had been done better. 3/5

Love shoegaze and the Cocteau Twin sound but I just can't get fully into them, not sure why. Maybe it's more about the songs than the sound for me.

Apherische Klänge

Such beautiful and haunting voices, ruined by a below average studio band.

Erikoista dream wavea ja onkin aika hämyinen tunnelma. Outoudesta tulee mieleen Björk ja Aurora. Ihan miellyttävää kuunneltavaa silti kun ei ole liian outoa. Parhaat: Domino, Pandora (For Cindy), Amelia

I thought this was fine and liked it about the same as the other album we listened to. I thought I'd be more into their stuff ... oh, well!

Thoughts before listening: One of those 80s bands that I see mentioned a lot, but I don't really know a ton about. Their album Heaven or Las Vegas has already come up on this list...and I believe I liked it more than I thought I would. I don't recognize this cover or any of the song names on the album, but I would assume more of the same atmospheric new wave. Review: My thoughts on this album are the same as with Heaven or Las Vegas. This is perfectly fine atmospheric 80s dream pop that I am certainly enjoying even if its not my favorite style. The best song here is "Lorelei" and that is going on my playlist. 3-stars

Dreamy and ethereal with a distinct 80s feel. Can’t understand any of lyrics. Better than other dream pop I’ve heard so far.

I like how vibey this album is.

not my favourite cocteau twins album but I love my wife Elizabeth Fraser

I think this is some solid ambient/shoegaze.

Actually my *least* favorite Cocteau Twins album. I agree with the band in describing it as "the worst album by a mile". I think the recording quality and simplicity of the effects really does the music a disservice.

For a dreary morning, this ethereal alt-rock record was a perfect fit. What I love about this project is that even for music made in languages I don't understand, I can still find connection and joy in the actual music. That fits the bill with the Cocteau Twins on this album. Great vocals and harmonies, and the vibes of the instrumentation were exquisite. Notable Tracks: - Ivo - Lorelai - Pandora (for Cindy) 6/10

I like it but it's a bit strange at times

Great surprise for me. I’ve only listened to Cocteau Twins whenever Spotify sends me in that direction. I have never listened to the band in full, but this was a nice listen. Dreamy, grand, exciting… Kate Bush’y or Björk’y - I do get a little tired of it after a while, though. I will definitely listen to this again

Ihan hyvää maalailua! 3/5

The instruments are cool, the voice is quality...but are there any actual lyrics in this album? The singing is just variations of dreamscape sounds that really become annoying over the course of an album. My "Shoegaze is mumble rap for white hipsters" take is aging beautifully.

I liked it. Looking forwars to more cocteau twins album. I think i have to listen mor to it to like it more but left a great impression. Interesting how manylanguages where used 3.5/5.0

ethereal dreamy atmosphere but that's about it

Reminds me of an upbeat Enya.

I dunno. It's fine. But not blown away. Another one I don't know why it is on the list.

A wonderfully ethereal jaunt back to the 80's. The simplistic use of drum machine only for emphasis and structure helps to place rhythmic focus on the strings and vocals themselves while leaving lots of space to capitalize on

Wow this record feels like it's ahead of its time. I love how ethereal it is. It kind of sounds like a mix between shoegaze and dream pop.

it's good but it's no Heaven or Las Vegas u know?

I made it about half way through. I liked the songs that started work "p". Definitely a vibe. And the sound was to me very late eighties. I don't know that I'd listen to the full album again with an attentive ear, but I saved some songs

Not a favorite.

Like if the movie the Labyrinth was an album.

Trinkets

fool's gold

Got to me pretty late and hasn't disappointed. How to put the dream in dream pop while you're gazing. The vocals are mostly unintelligible, as is usually the case when empyrean voicings try for the terrestrial. When these cuts works for me I'm transported. Hard to maintain that for an album's worth.

Haunting, ethereal - all the old adjectives still apply. Very much a sound of their times. Lovely to listen to - calming. Although it does remind me of one particular New Year’s Eve party where pretentious Pritesh banged on about them all night which kind of ruined them for me because he was so boring. Poor boy thought he’d got lucky until I left him on my friend’s doorstep. So thinking of the Cocteau Twins also makes me chortle.

Ok so after a run of albums from the 60s and 70s, the thing that jumped out at me immediately was how much wetter this album is. The 80s truly was the decade of reverb and these songs sound much more massive and ethereal because of it. On the whole, I LOVED the SOUND of the record. But the songs themselves? Listen, I made it through the whole album, so I don’t want to go too far with this comparison, but… It reminded me a lot of that dreadful Destroy Rock & Roll record. Lots of ideas for songs never properly developed and just looped until I was eager to get on with it to the next song. The difference here is that I genuinely liked a lot of the ideas here and was disappointed they weren’t developed into proper songs. Funny enough - I learned the band agrees with me! They’ve used the word “underdeveloped” to describe the record. So it sounded good enough that I got through it pleasantly! And I can see why this ended up being the album that cemented the bands signature ethereal soundscape.

The music and vocals are interesting enough or 3 stars or C-, but I would not go so far as to say I like it.

Ymmärrän oikein hyvin, miks just tää levy on listalla - tämähän on oikeasti hyvä hymistelykokonaisuus.

Dreamy

Enjoyed this sound, never heard of this group before. 3*

Dreamy and very 80s. Imagine drifting off to sleep counting sheep, so nice and peaceful. Then, in the distance a drum machine and some soft guitar begin playing. Oh no, is that Cyndi Lauper or maybe Boy George? Who is that? where am I? Why is my hair permed?

I thought this was decent - not as good as the one we had a couple of years(!) ago, which is on my work rotation, but it's a good listen. Like the other one, not sure quite what I like about it but it works, and Lorelei is a proper treat. A solid 3/5.

Barely remember this perhaps two weeks out. Kinda wispy singing and unfinished music that walks the line between ethereal and boring.

I off saw this album described as ethereal and I think that’s a beautiful adjective. It sounds like a soundtrack to a movie

Listens fine. Time seems to fly by whenever I listen to the Cocteau Twins. Not the type of music I actively listen out anymore, I prefer more abrasive and harsh shoegaze-like music.

🎧It’s certainly unique, isn’t it? Vibey as hell too. What in god’s name is Elizabeth Fraser singing with those angelic pipes?? Favorite track: Lorelei

i love the voice , music and production music. I don't love the lyrics though 3

Idk even know anymore

I liked the other worldly feel of this, but could have used a little more variety

Don’t enjoy this ad much as the first Cocteau Twins album. Simpsons: I’ll be honest I’ve stopped checking and have been guessing

Enjoyable album but nothing standout.

Like the album, didn’t love it but then I heard the final track, Donimo and if the rest of the album had been on the level of that song I would have loved it. Instead it was just fine

Pleasant enough. Rather warbly.

Having only listened to Heaven or Las Vegas, which I quite enjoyed, Treasure feels similar yet rawer.

Oiiilll spilllll… it’s not terrible but I’m not coming back to this.

This wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5

Were all song names women names?

At the risk of having my goth card taken away ... Cocteau Twins is one of those groups that I want to like more than I do. I respect them for pioneering dream pop and ethereal goth, and I don't dislike their music. Persephone is a banger. It's just that after a while all their songs kind of blend together. I also always kind of feel like I'm having a stroke listening to Elizabeth's vocals — like, I feel like I should understand what she's saying, but I know it's just gibberish. It gets frustrating, especially as someone who really cares about lyrics in music. If I'm going ethereal goth, I'm picking All About Eve over this. Sorry. 3/5 — part of me wants to give it a 4 because of its influence and legacy, but meh.

It was pretty different to what I expected to be honest. It was interesting and cool but not sure I loved it.

Interesting album, not what I would usually listen too but something new and fun. I believe French singers from the 80s. I can’t understand anything but I enjoy the music nonetheless. Would have in the background when building IKEA furniture.

This is a cool sound for 1984, which is incidentally my birth year. I hear them influencing the Cranberries and Y La Bamba. It also seems to be contemporary with Kate Bush. I’ll be visiting the rest of this catalogue.

Nothing particular stood out to me other than this album seed to be a decent recommendation out of a sea of garbage that recently came up in the app. I enjoyed this enough to consider listening to it again.

I can take it or leave it. Nothing special.

Sounds like a fever dream

cocteau twins are goated don't know how i'm rating this album though high 3 or low 4

Treasure is my second Cocteau Twins album on this project, and their sound is truly unlike anything I've heard. They were ahead of their time for 1984, but musicians still aren't making music like this. To say this album is ethereal is selling it short. It's an easy journey to listen to this album because their music has a tendency to wash over the listener, but there's a lot of nuance. Nothing on this album is sloppy or unrefined. Not to mention, the main vocalist has the perfect voice for this album, more so than anything I've ever heard before.

Nice music but not what I care to listen to.

had it on in the background while working but will listen again

Ivo 2.7 Lorelei 2.9 Beatrix 2.6 Persephone 2.8 Pandora (for Cindy) 3 Amelia 2.6 Aloysius 2.5 Cicely 2.6 Otterley 2 Donimo 2.1 Score: 2.58

Dreamy vocals. Sometimes I wondered if it was English. But it didn't leave a lasting impression. Already forgot I listened to it

Less of a standout than I was hoping but some really neat sounds, especially towards the end of the record.

Overall enjoyable, but I kept waiting for a real banger like Heaven or Las Vegas or Alice and one never came.

I think I would have liked it less if I paid more attention to this

It was OK ... 3 stars

This isn't really my favorite genre of music, but I'll give them some credit for innovating something (seemingly). If I wouldn't have read anything about this album first, I would have guessed it was released in the early-mid 2000s. I think it rivals a lot of similar stuff that was coming out at the time. I can appreciate that.

Happily listened to this while working, had some interesting moments but not going to be playing a load more from the artist based on this

This was interesting and not like anything I've ever heard before, good job!

didn’t listen to the entire album, but it was interesting. but i could see myself putting it on in the background every once in a while.

Haunting and dreamy. Love the vocals.

I have begun to appreciate.the Cocteau Twins diaphanous electric folk, and once again I didn’t have the time to get deep into the mindset.

Very relaxing to listen to. However, ethereal pop with almost no danceability isn’t my thing. This is my second Cocteau Twins album and I don’t think they’re for me. 3/5 because it’s not bad, just not my thing.

Didn't make me want to listen

I’ve definitely hit a lull in getting music that I really appreciate and enjoy. This album wasn’t terrible but it didn’t motivate me to want to discover more of their music. It was background noise.

good album very soulful, i can see why it is on this list. helped me do math so no complaints. fave song: lorelai and persophone

I like the ethereal sound. It's relaxing, but no real standouts for fantastic songs.

This album is nice, liked the mood it has. Will I listen to again: 40%

Reminds me of late 80s/90s movie soundtracks.

That was weird.

strano ma non male. Molto etereo e sognante

Kinda sounds like Portishead from the 80’s. Not sure if it’s because I listened to it on my work headphones, or because I’d drank too much coffee, but the jangly guitar present on and throughout most tracks became a bit nauseating. I did quite like Pandora - reminds me of Vibes is Right by Barrington Levy.

it was good, but nothing really stood out to me besides Lorelei. that song alone could be worth 4 stars, but I know Cocteau Twins can do better

Love the soundscapes - very much my vibe. Only knew them from one vocalist appearing on Massive Attack album.

I quite enjoyed this. I might even listen again.

At first I quite liked this, thought it had a Kate Bush ambience to it, then it got a bit too droney and a bit too weird and I lost interest!

Really enjoyed this just isn't very memorable

Probably suffers from things that came after it. It’s not bad by any means and I can hear the music it has influenced.

Prefer Heaven or Last Vegas, great vibes on this just no major stand outs

p518. 1984. 3 stars. Got to admit, the Cocteau Twins are one of my musical blind spots. I can appreciate the musicianship and they have some decent songs, but I find Liz Frazer's voice shrill and grating after a couple of tracks. And it's all a bit... soulless. Well done though.

Liked: Very cool instrumentation at time, unique use of sounds and effects to create soundscapes. Very melodious with genre bending at time. Dislike: Vocals buried in the mix, I cannot distinguish what words are being said and cannot decipher if its in English or another language.

The Wiki review uses the word "ethereal" to describe this album and that's pretty on point. The best way I can describe it is like music you'd expect to hear at a spa in the Outer Hebrides where psychedelic mushrooms are part of the treatments. It's relaxing and pretty up to a point, though it's not clear whether there are actual lyrics or the singer is just using her voice to create sound -- certainly I couldn't understand one single word on the whole album. It's difficult to even really think of the tracks as "songs"; I think "moods" would be a better word. It was interesting to be exposed to this record but I can't see myself listening to it again.

This is a pretty solid meh on the meh scale. 80's post punk. Pandora (for Cindy) is legitimately beautiful. Aloysius is another legit beauty.

This was nice! Very dreamy synth pop and bloody enjoyable! First time with the twins and I may very well check out some of their other stuff! Liked this one!

the first half was a bit unremarkable, but i guess for the second i was already warmed up and enjoyed it a bit more - 3 adds

wasnt into it at first but its nice background music but def not a revisit

слишком загадочный и с непонятными словами. тот первый почему-то лучше лёг

Really loved the sound of this album but I cannot tell you a single word that was sung

Ambient and fun. Couldn’t tell you a single song or every word that stood out.

Nothing wrong with the album. It’s fine. But it’s nebulous.

Decent, liked the vocals the most. Kinda reminded me of Kate Bush

Sort of thing I expected to like but pretty meh

звучание приятное, как минимум один трек себе уже забрал

Middle songs are the best. All pretty much sound the same but I don’t hate or love it.

A mixed bag. Weird but very unique and deserving to be on this list.

Maybe I’m rating this too high but here we are

What was to come was much better

didnt love as much as their other albums but can appreciate the influence on future records that i adore

This felt like it should be my vibe cuz all the ethereal bits but I just couldn't get super into it.

Not my thing?

Dit is eigenlijk best tof zeg! Klinkt oud, maar had ook iets nieuws kunnen zijn.

The lead singer Liz is very talented, and the songs are ethereal and well crafted. But synth heavy at times (it was the 80's), and the mixing was weird at times. Could barely hear the lead singer on some songs.

ganz ok, habs ma besser erwartet tbh

Kinda meh

Dream pop. Ni fu ni fa.

Atmosphérique, bonne découverte bien que brouillon un peu.

tyvärr inte lika bra som heaven or las vegas.

Ethereal, pretty, but also a bit vague. Good listen, but didnt blow me away and none of the songs stood out.

Dream pop. Ni fu ni fa.

3+ f vocal+

Wafty background fine

Ethereal in some ways. Sounds French without being in French, somehow. 3.5

Another from the Cocteau Twins, wasn't expecting it but I'm kind of glad I can say I've listened to more than just the big one. But I've learned that the big one is the big one for good reason. This one, while decent, just doesn't create the same heavenly space that the other does. A few solid tracks that I enjoyed, but not nearly as dreamy or transportive as I would've hoped. Definitely still finding their sound here. Overall, it was alright. Favorite tracks: Donimo (intentional typo?), Lorelei, Pandora. Album art: Looks to be a mannequin behind a lacy dress or something, the coloring effect makes it seem very gothic, like something ripped from Dimetrescu's mansion in Resident Evil Village. It's simple but I dig it. Font is excellent. 3/5

Lite ojämn men får ändå en svag trea.

It’s hauntingly beautiful but does tend to blend into the background

I can see why people like it but it seems pretty mediocre to me

Certainly a vibe and style. Enjoyable enough to listen, but maybe not a full album

A dazzling glimpse into the 80s pop scene that wasn't as much on the forefront as others. Cocteau Twins 'Treasure' is dark and morose in a very 80s latchkey-come-home-when-the-street-lights-come-on way. 3.5/5.

If I didn't know what "ethereal" meant, I'd describe this as ghostly, haunting, eerie, soft, flighty, and other words I don't know the meaning of. This should be the soundtrack to my dreams.

Dreampop at its finest. If you like dreampop, of course

rustig genieten

I don't know what it is that I want from the Cocteau Twins that I don't get. But I don't get it. It seems like all the ingredients are right there. But they always make rhubarb pie instead of, like, the pumpkin pie the I'm after? It's like the music I want is just one room over? Because I listen to this and it's all there, but it's also not. And I can't get my head around it.

What the hell is this? Something for when Enya gets a bit too intense? Whatever, three stars.

Ditto.

Not bad

All kinda blends into one. Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it - definition of a 3.

Indie alternative and dream pop. Different. Influential. Still not going to be listening to this much again. What can beat Massive Attack’s Teardrop?

I didn't hate it but it feel into background music pretty fast.

Second album by Cocteau Twins, it's quite interesting sound, gothic mixed with 80s pop and with a tiny bit of shoegaze for some additional taste. I kind of liked it, but I would rather move on to another album now.

I was okay when this started but lost when it finished. It felt like a marshmallow: good enough but not very substantive, and gone quickly.

I want to like this more, but eventually this album felt repetitive. I wish I could have understood the lyrics more, because that might have helped. Overall this was like listening to a lot of beautiful and ethereal singing by haunted dolls who couldn’t really enunciate much.

Best Song: Pandora (For Cindy). Bubbly and ethereal. Sounds like fairies singing in a language no one understands. Worst Song: Otterley. It turns out you can be too atmospheric. Overall: Music that feels completely alien, but at least the aliens seem kind of friendly? At least not immediately violent. It really feels like the artist is experiencing an entire range of emotions that I don't even know the names of. sleepy rain music.

Yeah it's cool. Great bones. Cool sounds. I bet if I listened a couple more times I could even start telling one song from another!!

Not as good as "Heaven or Las Vegas", but still great an early glimpse into the nascent dream pop/shoegaze scene that would hit its stride in the early 90s.

BRILLIANT ALBUM!!!

Really gorgeous, ethereal music. The languid pace can get a little monotonous but there is no doubt of the beauty in the vocals and in the production. 3.5 stars

spare and lovely

cool, ethereal. not my typical taste but glad i listened. very 80s witchy glam.

Love the Cocteau twins I’d love them more if I knew what they were saying

This was interesting, and sounded a lot like Kate Bush. Not bad!

Actually pretty relaxing

Some songs were cool but also very haunted

Not my favourite of their albums but loved it nonetheless

Felt a little too ethereal for me? I can’t find any other way to describe it. It was nice but not in a way that I’d want to return to.

Entirely pleasant with moments that achieve a "greater than the sum of its parts" feel. Sort of telling that the wikipedia page for this entry says that it's "regarded as one of their worst albums". BUT HEY IT'S UK POST PUNK NEW WAVE BS SO CHUCK IT ON HERE

Fattar om man hatar det. Det gör inte jag, men Fraser måste användas rätt. Som med This Mortal Coil.

This was a nice album. I'm close to a 4 but the dreamy stuff got to me.

The Twins are the OG dream-pop band that influenced other bands such as This Mortal Coil (who I love), Beach House and shoegaze bands such as My Bloody Valentine (who give me a headache). TIL from Wiki that they're Scottish, which explains why I don't understand a word that they're singing, although that's probably intentional since their style is an ethereal wall of sound and a tapestry of echoey and dreamy vocals. Since 1,001 lets us listen to a lot of bands from years ago, I've noticed that some music sounds so dated while others can stand the test of time and sound fresh as ever. Unfortunately the music by the Cocteau Twins sounds very dated today.

Experimental

Nice ending track. 7/10

Very interesting album, like the later cocteau twins stuff a little bit more, this has less melody and more atmosphere, loved the guitars and drums on some of the tracks, I love that you cant understand what is being said 90% of the time Fav songs Ivo Persephone Cicily 7/10

This was whatever to me. I barely remember listening to it.

Deffo a vibe. Took me a couple of tries to get into it. But once I did, I enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed the song Lorelei. I liked the album but just not my favourite...

Still not a fan...

- Only ever listened to HOLV before - Good album - Would prefer Cocteau Twins if they used actual lyrics, but I can kind of see the 'voice as an instrument' perspective - Fav songs: Lorelai, Beatrix, Donimo

Jotenkin tosi kaunis. Oli kiva kuunnella, mutta en usko että löysin mitään ihan lempparikappaleita. Suosikit: Ivo, Beatrix, Donimo.

Dream pop with unintelligible lyrics. This should just irritate me with tweeness. But it doesn't. There's some truly intriguing sounds here. My attention started to wander, however.

It's alright, not something I'd listen on my free time
