Reviews (page 7 of 9)
It took me a while to place it, but the things I like about this album are very similar to what I liked about 'A Nod Is as Good as a Wink... to a Blind Horse' by Faces, which is also on this list. Every track is exuberant, and each part is played to perfection with a casual blue-rock affect. Chris Robinson in particular sounds like he's put everything he has into every single track, and that energy is infectious.
It's alright, although the best track is a cover
Yasurearetohandlenowmessaround! Pretty solid Southern-style rock album. I was impressed with the higher vocalizations on "Could I've Been so Blind". Maybe I'm just in a summer BBQ mood, but I can definitely see this album as a great soundtrack for a party, sometime after the "let's chat and catch up" phase, and sometime before the food and subsequent food-coma chill phase, where everyone is lively and playing games in the yard. Ya know?
Straight down the middle four on the floor rock and roll. Fave: Sister Luck
Not exceptional, but still pretty good straight rock and roll.
This got them started with the Otis Redding cover. They really peaked with their next album, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion.
Kind of surprised to see this on the list. I'm sure the Black Crowes are a fine band, but they seem sort of like generic rock n' roll to me. Did they break any new ground with this album? It sounds like a rehash of Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, and maybe a little AC/DC, with a bit more modern (at the time), grunge vibe to it. It's fine, but nothing special. 3 stars.
Okay
De va fine
R0ck on brother
Solid southern rock with a cleaner 80s production, nothing groundbreaking here.
Competent Rolling Stones worship. Not really adding a whole lot to the conversation.
For southern rock it's okay, inoffensive. In general not into this style of rock though, reminds me of listening to trying-to-be-edgy 90s radio in the US.
It's nearly a 4* but just not quite
Interesting and respectable, not my type tbh but still ain’t bad
It’s fine I guess. Was new at the time, now sounds a little generic.
It's ok, not exactly sophisticated American rock
Classic. Really Good. 3/5. A few more listens and this could easily be a 4/5. So many good tunes! I just kind of get tired of that voice for a whole album.
Favorites: Twice as Hard Hard to Handle (one of those "oh this is on DVE all the time i've heard this" songs) She Talks to Angels (same as above)
Music for a sad middleaged man drinking bud light in a sports bar
What more can be said other than it's some good ol' fashioned rock and roll? It's some good ol' fashioned rock and roll! Favorites: Twice as Hard, Jealous Again, Sister Luck, Could I've Been So Blind, Seeing Things, Stare It Cold.
An enjoyable album
Back in the summer of 1991 I was working at a private beach, my first actual job. I lived in an Italian town that was specifically designed for summer vacation; a ghost town during winter time, its 2000 people population would increase by three times during the summer, and so would the level of activity, both cultural and economic, which meant that, for us, wild and flickering youngsters, summertime was the real deal more than in any other place, or so we believed (you would have to go through those pale winters filled with anonymity, as sad and useless as the non alcoholic beer in order to get a sense of what summers actually meant then and there) Working at a private beach from sunrise to sunset meant that the only people I would hang out with were there for only a couple of weeks, and then after swimming, boating, throwing ball on the sand, and so on, we were out for the night, more often than not until the next morning. Back then time was a constraint when it came to sharing and getting to know each other and everything happened at another speed: I remember all the faces and all the places, but not necessarily what happened at those places, and most certainly I struggle with names. On one night out someone gave me a 90 minutes tape cassette: on one side there was this album, on the other... Well, we'll get to the other side at some other time, it might come up in this challenge. At the time I knew nothing about Americana, so this album sounded kind of new to me and I listened to it a lot, really. I liked it, I could sense joy and nostalgia at the same time, that sort of blues thing going on; I also figured this was rock and roll, in a sense. It also sounded nicely recorded. The album, not the tape, although the recording on the tape was good too. Listening to it now brings back all these memories and some more, and it is an ok album but not one that I would reach out to A bit like looking at a summer picture where we all were smiling, curious, and somehow happy. And since this was a snapshot, I quickly moved on and started looking for more "alternative" as a figure of speech stuff in my music. Although Upon arriving here in Montreal I found a second hand CD copy for real cheap and said to myself Why not? Because yeah, pictures are made to be looked at, even if only once in a very long while.
Hmmm, first time of listening, I like some of what I heard but this is standard 70's mainstream Rock/Blues but 20 years later. Reminiscent of Aerosmith/Stones/Faces I think. some good tunes but not earth shattering really. I can see the merit and I liked "Jealous Again" the classic cover of Otis's "Hard to Handle" and the "Hurt"-like "She Talks To Angels" (In fact the connection between the Crowes and Nine Inch Nails has just occurred to me) As I say some good tunes but standard Rock 'n' Roll to me and yearning for the 70's in the 90's I think. Not in my collection but I see the reason it is on this list!
first listen decent southern blues rock
Pretty fun! Bopped my head a few times.
Although it's from the 90s (let's say late 80s really) Shake Your Money Maker sounds like it's from the mid 70s. I'll have to agree with this Entertainment Weekly review which sums up the sound of the album: "The Black Crowes are to the early Rolling Stones what Christian Slater is to the young Jack Nicholson: a self-conscious imitation, but fine enough in its own right." Best: Jealous Again Worst: She Talks to Angels
Some good old fashion greasy lues-rock in the style of classic Rolling Stones. Nothing particularly memorable to me but a lot of fun. 3.5 🌟
Growing up in the 90s, it never registered that "Twice As Hard" was at the time a recently released song. Years and years later, without any real curiosity as to who The Black Crowes are, the thought was that this was a one-hit single from the 70s. Comparisons are inevitable in this genre, elements of AC/DC in the vocals and rhythm, you could almost substitute "Highway to Hell" to the chorus for "Twice As Hard". These songs could be cousins, the hard rocking guitars with that touch of blues and seemingly southern charms. This album can certainly be enjoyed, The Black Crowes do manage to make their own mark here and while they may not rise above some of their obvious inspirations it would be fair to say that "Shake Your Money Maker" earns a spot in that rotation.
Does this album come with BBQ and Budweiser? Back in the 90's I wasn't a big fan of this band, now thirty years later I'm still not a fan. Sure there's some good rock n' roll and I appreciated the first track, but the dude's voice is out-of-this-world annoying. And, after the third track, I was tired of listening... and suffered through the remainder. These guys are polished rockers. The style is in the same vein as Aerosmith but (this album at least) lacks the charisma and diversity of Aerosmith albums on this list. Instead, the strategy seemed to be to focus on this guys voice, which isn't for everyone.
By the middle of the second song, I thought that this album is a good example of generic rock. The Black Crowes would make a great bar band. Maybe a weekend headliner at a music club on the main drag in Nashville. The songs are nice enough, but I feel nothing from them, until Hard To Handle, Thick n’ Thin, and She Talks To Angels. Struttin’ Blues isn’t half bad either. Next on Unsolved Mysteries…why did The Black Crowes wait until the second half of the album to do something interesting? The bar band quip maybe was too harsh, but there is too much generic rock on this album to warrant further consideration.
6/10 solid blues rock but it’s not as good as what it’s trying to emulate
These guys were huge, but on closer inspection sound a lot like the Quireboys. Smatterings of Foghat, Blackfoot and the less interesting aspects of Zep too. I could dig it, but if I bought the album it would probably be lost in the shuffle. Three and a generous half stars?
Middle of the road 90s blues fuff
Sadly, sounds kind of generic to me.
Not bad, but for the most part, derivative from older rock music. There is no reason to choose this album to listen to out of many similar ones.
C'était bien mais rien d'extraordinaire.
ouais ok
confirmed for me that I wouldn't search then out, but can see why some people get off on them
21st January 2022 Listened in the morning while doing bits and pieces. Went to see Licorice Pizza with Gareth at Peckhamplex. Didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did, really great fun. The Spotify notes give the impression the band have an amazing attitude of just wanting to have funny and make music with each other. 3.5 if I could.
Southern rockblues rockhard rockrock and roll. Bien.
It's fine and solid, I guess, but it seems inferior to some other southern rock / blues rock bands.
Yeah, fine, sounds competently done and is an enjoyable enough listen, although I notice even after two play throughs nothing's really stuck in my head. Fave track - "Hard to Handle", but mainly because the The Black Crowes version of that song was reliably available as a karaoke choice, not because they did anything amazing with it...
Fun little album. Bumpin' tunes all the way through. 6/10
This is a pretty good consistent album of it genre. There is no outstanding track. In a live setting this would be feel stronger.
Pretty fun album, tunes all sound familiar and just easy to listen to. Just does southern bluesy gospely rock and does it well. One to throw on in the background but not sure there's much substance there, any longer and it would be a drag.
ok
A lot of mediocre albums in a row now
not bad like good but i got bored
It’s a little bit Blues Brothers, a little bit Rolling Stones, a little bit Led Zeppelin and probably a little bit of a lot of other classic rock and soul bands. While it’s not overly original, it’s fun and breezy and sounds good while it’s on. Consistent and solid are two adjectives I’d use to describe this album.
Rock and roll with some bluesy-ness to it. The lead singer has a distinct voice and sound, which is good if you dig it, because there's not much change.
Like most people (I assume) I really just knew two songs from this album: Hard to handle, and She talks to Angels. I'm cool with that to be honest - the rest of the album is just good, not amazing like those two songs. On the other hand, I'd say The Black Crowes are an example of a band who have developed a lot since their early album, and have a sound that comes across best live - so it's worth checking out footage of their live shows.
I’ve never understood the obsession with the Black Crowes. Their music is ok to good but the signing is flat and poorly mixed. Mumble rock. I wouldn’t turn it off but I wouldn’t turn it on either
Killer
Fun album. Feels like the end of a rock era and the introduction of a new one.
This came out in the 90s? It feels old, real Blues rock vibes. Like some shit I'd listen to while drinking Budweiser and oiling my mullet back.
File under 90s rock
Pretty alright 90s rock album. Glad I know where that Hard to Handle cover comes from that I hear on the radio sometimes I guess
Blues rock just isn't my thing - I get how it'd be fun in a bar live with beer and friends, but it's not great for just sitting and listening.
Not bad. More my style.
3.8 - Solid southern rock. I hear an exceptionally tight backing band that sounds like they've been honed from years of hard gigging. No breakthroughs in sound but notable as a revivalist, roots-based rock. While I don't share in the gushing love for this band that I've heard over the years, I certainly understand the appeal.
His voice is amazing. Lots of misses on this though.
This is a band that's gone under my radar, though upon listening I recognized a lot of the songs from the radio. Pretty good old school rock; I enjoyed it.
Pretty fun Southern rock-ish album. Singles are the best though. 6/10
This came out a few years after Appetite for Destruction and had a similar impact... looking back, the southern rock, however influenced by the Stones, doesn't have as much pull as before.
4 really solid enjoyable songs. The remaining are probably great in a local live bar-band setting, as it is gritty bluesy rock with energy and passion. Unfortunately they are largely forgettable and aren't enough to come back to to warrant a 4 star rating. Still good.
So it's got that one classic song on it. I was surprised that this came out in 90. It definitely seems older. It's not exactly for me, but its all over the place.
It's just a southern rock album. Not much to say about it other than the keyboard is great and the guitars are pretty good. The singer's voice is stereotypical of the genre, so there's no surprises in that department. All in all an okay experience.
7/10 classic rock with a hint of blues in some songs. best song: twice as hard
Not a huge fan of the vocals but some fun songs like Twice as Hard and Hard to Handle
Like a modern Rolling Stones. Pretty good but nothing that jumped out at me.
I liked it! The hits were the hits, no true hidden gems.
I have heard several tracks from the band over the years, but nothing has piqued enough interest to get me to listen to more. No change of opinion. The musicians are talented, but for me this album is "okay".
It was, fine? Inoffensive but not particularly memorable.
Decent, plenty of catchy tunes. Not usually my cup of tea but went down well as background noise.
Quite pleasant to have playing in the background, but utterfly forgettable and unexciting.
Very listenable, but forgettable.
I expected more. It was just fairly inoffensive dad-rock in the end.
Fairly enjoyable listen, pretty straight up blues rock
“Shake Your Money Maker” by The Black Crowes (1990) Good rock. The main lyrical theme here is of a man opening up his soul to/about his woman. Honest, reflective, and sassy, these all work well in the rock genre. Think early Rolling Stones. Pretty standard structure and arrangements, delivered well enough. Fine guitar grooves, with plenty of distortion and sustain. While Chris Robinson’s lead vocal has an appropriate and legitimate southern rock attitude (sorry, Boss), it is certainly missing variety, making it (accidentally and sadly) one of the more recognizable 1990s voices out there. “Seeing Things” tries to be a gospel-spiced anthem, but it doesn’t quite make it. Their cover of Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle” cooks without boiling over, demonstrating that Rock and Roll perdures (but “Thick n’ Thin” is even better). And with the obligatory acoustic-heavy ballad lamenting some poor soul’s drug addiction (“She Talks to Angels”), the Crowes complete their rock album punch card. After 30 years, this is one to put on the shelf just to keep the collection complete. 3/5
3.5
Engaging blues. 6/10
Ok
High school me liked this a lot. I just find it so boring though now.
Not my cuppa
Opens with guitar that is the sound of how I wanted to be perceived in 8th grade. This would be brewery singing-from-the-cellar music. Definitely strong summer night highway, mustang convertible vibes. The camera pans straight down the center yellow line, does a flip, and focuses on you with your hair whipping around jamming out to this. Vocals are as if he is yelling in a whisper the entire time. Slows it down a little bit towards the end and brings back reminiscent feelings of an 8th grade dance. You stand there, looking at the swaying couples wondering if they'll get married, emotions are high as you gear up for middle school graduation. Rascal Flatts met Led Zeppelin and then created a Green Day cover band; I don't hate it.
Sort of generic 90's rock. nothing fascinating
false
Maybe it feels pretty "standard" now, but is a good example of the genre. Was decent.
Solid 3.5. Doesn't warrant a 4 though. Did anyone else notice the glitch in "Twice as hard" at 1:32? It was on Spotify and Deezer oddly enough...
Quite a few songs I know but did not know were by the Black Crowes. A little ballady for my taste at some points, but overall pretty enjoyable.
Nostalgia jam
Bluesy Nice slide guitar Driving through the desert radio music Background music 6/10
First track sounds like Led Zeppelin but folkier, dude on the cover looks like Robert Plant, the dude behind him kinda looks like Jimmy Page...I'm seeing a pattern but can't quite put my finger on it.... Ohhhh so this is where Hard to Handle comes fro (didn't know this was that song's name)
Highkey forgettable lmao. Exactly what typa rock n roll sound you'd expect from the early 90s, the back end of 80s hairs bands.
liked the band, liked the music. 3,5/5
Nothing hugely original here but a really good listen none the less. 3.5 stars
A bit over inflated
pretty good, not my thing
The Black Crowes... I'm a little surprised to see these guys on here. They were effectively trying to bring the old-school Southern rock sound into the 1990 mainstream, with some success. This is a pretty simple, somewhat generic blues-rock album that occasionally leans into country balladry. It has a couple good songs(the big hits), but it's mostly kinda mediocre. I want to enjoy it, but I find myself not caring about it. They don't really have a whole lot of musical prowess, and their songwriting is frequently lacking(both in hooks and lyrical content). The best song is an Otis Redding cover, for fuck's sake! This more or less feels like a predecessor to modern radio country(a genre with no artistic merit whatsoever), which makes me want to hate it more. This is the kind of album that is not really essential but definitely had its day in the sun, much like yesterday's altogether more enjoyable Darkness album. This album is ranked #6 of 22 for 1990. Other 1990 albums rated by me: People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm(2/22)-5 Bossanova(4/22)-5 Fear of a Black Planet(5/22)-5 I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got(7/22)-4 The La's(12/22)-3
I’m not sure that apathy, by nature, can be considered a strong feeling. But yeah I feel strongly apathetic about this album
*Truck revving sounds* You're listenin' tooo *HONK HONK* 102.3 *YEEEHAA* Trucker FM *Screeching Tires* Where we play nothin' but manly, American music to rock out to. *Rifle fires* This ain't your city-folks' station. *plays Highway to Hell 10 times in a row*
For some reason I thought it's the same band who wrote Mr. Jones but no, that was Counting Crows. I guess up till now they were the same band to me. The album is quite ok but at the same time something doesn't feel fully sincere here? The most general vibe they give off is "INXS if they were American and Michael had none of his charisma" (different genre but half this album sounds like INXS' Good Times and the vocalist sounds Hutchense-y). Another case of rip-off sound is Seeing Things which sounds like Joe Cocker's version of With a Little Help From My Friends. I had an ok time listening to the album but I also had some problems with it 2/5
This was a solid bluesy rockin' album. Their version of Hard To Handle is as good as Otis' in my opinion. Chris Robinson's vocals are outstanding. He seemingly effortlessly belts out these tunes like it's no big deal. Even with all that, I found Shake Your Money Maker to be mostly unmemorable. Liked Songs Added: Hard To Handle
Country rock is not my style. 4/10
Is it worse to be harmless than outright shitty? When you're playing the blues, probably. 'Blues' is a strong word for what this is, this is about as bluesy as Aerosmith (and it sounds about white.) I guess it's mostly harmless, but when whatshisface starts going "a-heya-pretty-mama..." I start missing the subtlety and grace of Eddie Vedder.
The music reminds me a little of Aerosmith, only more boring. And I don't find Aerosmith particularly exciting anyway. 2/5
i just find them very wanky and trying too hard to sound like other bands….. zeppelin for example
This was fine, even good. I kind fail to see how this was influential. It feels dated for its time, which is a fun sound, but idk I think I’d just listen to other stuff.
I knew it would be bad. I didn’t expect this bad.
Generic rock music. I'll pass. I'll give a 2
Celui-Ci il est assez insipide. On dirait une sorte de sous aerosmith Lui je l’enlève des 1001 sans hésiter 3/10
Maybe if I were a trucker or something
First Listen: NA, couldn't take notes! OVERALL: This album is pretty fun. I love some southern blues rock, and these guys do a pretty good job of it. I found myself recognizing a bunch of songs, turns out I knew quite a few songs from these guys but was never aware of them. I don't think these guys do anything crazy unique, it plays around with pre-existing tropes and does a good job at it. It's well produced, well performed, and pretty well written. That being said I do think there's way more interesting acts and albums in the blues and americana sphere. I can't help shake the feeling that these were the Greta Van Fleet of the 90s. I doubt I'll return to this outside a couple songs. 5/10 T3: Twice as Hard, Hard to Handle, Sister Luck
Right down Main Street southern rock. So pretty meh boring for most of it but I did always love their Hard to Handle cover growing up and it still sounds great. It’s some harmless fun at the end of the day. Rating: 2.1
Swagger in need of a hook
Too bland.
I saw them live before ever listening to their songs. What I can say is they're as bad live as they are in the studio.
Unremarkable
Some stank face blues rock. Really enjoyable stuff. Couple songs I really dug. Went into this only having heard the Otis cover. Went out pleasantly surprised. Bit too Led Zeppy at times, and sometimes just felt like a a caricature of old blues rock, but I imagine this was refreshing after the glam rock and synth heavy 80s. I just don't have that thirst to quench.
P is apathetic and K actively dislikes.
Pretty lame, dudes
Vähä mitään tarjoamaton rokkilevy. Tulee mieleen amerikkalainen kapakka jossa on prätkätyyppejä pelaamassa bilistä.
(3/7) unremarkable (but not unplesant)
Previously known. Novelty that doesn't really hold up.
Guess I’m not that into southern rock. Mostly not that interesting. A couple ok songs, but even those were only so-so.
I don’t know enough about music or this genre maybe to understand why this made the list. It was fine veering toward boring and sometimes grating. Parts of it were alright but also hard to know if that’s coz i stopped really paying attention.
This was ok but not very notable. Felt like second half was a bit better?
This is like a photocopy of a good album. I can get why dad rock types would’ve loved this. The Hard to Handle cover was hard to handle.
Blended rock and country that I'm still not sure about.
Pretty standard rock
Did not hear anything new or different from Black Crows to other groups of that time period.
Rubbish tbh, did nothing for me, was this fresh in 1990? Probably not right? 2.0/5.0 Best Song: they’re all identical
Meh
Perfectly ignorable
This got so old so fast.
Generic crap 90s rock
Claude, if I asked it to make generic annoying 90s rock
Fun bar band music.
It's not really bad, it's just so generic. I feel I could hear this band at a free festival and like it well enough with a drink in my hand but never think of it ever again.
This is supposed to be “the most rock ’n’ roll rock ’n’ roll band in the world”? It never really feels that way. 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘳 sticks so closely to a retro, blues-rock formula that it ends up sounding more studied than spontaneous. It’s not bad, and there are some solid moments, but it rarely has the grit or unpredictability you’d expect. Instead of feeling dangerous or alive, it comes across more like a careful recreation of something that used to be.
Standard US rock - ok I guess, but nothing exceptional about it for me
Without knowing that this was released in 1990, you'd be forgiven for dating it about 20 years earlier. Derivative, the big song is a cover version of someone else's song. It's an enjoyable romp but it doesn't seem particularly ground breaking.
Never were my thing, really dislike this kind of hokey faux white boy alterna-blues rock that was popular in the 90s.
Pretty generic alt-rock, I guess. Sounds like Dad rock…but not my Dad, he listened to cool music. About 4 songs in I was already over it.
You can tell a lot about an album by what other records Apple Music lists under “You Might Also Like” underneath the record you’re currently streaming. For The Black Crows we have Kenny Wayne Shepard, Blues Traveler, Kid Rock, Buckcherry, Bob Seger and Matchbox 20. All artists that give me a massive ick. Not the worst album I’ve heard on this list, but not for me.
Their cover of Hard to Handle is damn solid. I had a hard time caring about any other tracks though
I just found this really boring. I’m not really a fan of the genre and this do not do anything to change that opinion.
What was the point

Nothing new. Avetage
Junttia ja tylsää ja turhaa. Liian geneeristä papparockia. Tulee mieleen Gunnarit ja Aerosmith ja vastaavat. Ei jatkoon.
Bleh dad rock bar music with hints of country. Not my jam at all. It was deeply uninteresting.
Eh it’s just ok, just another rock album. Nothing that really stood out to me. I did like the song “Seeing Things” but everything else falls flat
Expected more from a band with such a cool name.. bland, uninspired, and unoriginal… nothing memorable but not insulting to the ears. I feel like I got CLICKBAITED!
I've never liked this group. I still don't. They just felt wildly inauthentic and tacky. They still do.
4/10 good but just no connection
I thought, to myself "This should be about done", it was track 4. This probably inspired a lot of people to get out there and make music. "If these guys can imitate Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild over and over, we can too" This is fine. Could be better if they had found a way to elevate or bring something fresh. Background BBQ music. A strong 2.5
top 3 - Twice As Hard, She Talks To Angels, Stare It Cold. It’s fine but I’m personally sort of bored listening to it so I don't have much to say. I can see the appeal and why it was popular though! Or maybe I'll just have to relisten again? Sometimes I can be like that where I don't care for something on the first listen but like it later on :p
Blooze clichés for rock dads
Wannabe Rolling Stones crossed with American Soft Rock. Nothing original going on at all. I find it’s just washing over me...just bland. 2
I don't think this is necessary. Doesn't add much to the well established canon of rock music. Hard to Handle is the big track, and its just advert music basically. Sterile. 2/5
Not very thrilling rock music.
Bog standard American Rock from Rolling Stones wannabes and why not? The Stones quite happily stole from US blues artists to begin with and it didn't hurt them, so why not steal it back. Truthfully though, it all feels a bit too clean and corporate. It's too well thought out and lacks any real soul. Sometimes it borders on parody. It's something a Top Gear presenter would want playing as the car goes through some leaves by the side of the road. It's David Brent rock. It's music made with aspartame. Best Tracks: Twice as Hard; Jealous Again; Hard To Handle
The original 70s blues rock that this is imitating already felt derivative and dull to me, and I'm definitely not interested in a copy of the copy. As with Led Zeppelin etc, the macho posturing is ludicrous and there's a strong hint of toxic maculinity.
Listening session: february 8th, while getting ready in the morning Listened to before: no Thoughts: most of the uptempo tracks were a bit too soft for my liking and I found the slower tracks not super interesting Favourite track: Hard To Handle
2.5
Servicable, competent, palatable and by the numbers. All adjectives that do not denote something that is unique or essential. You do not need to hear this album before you die.
Not a fan of the Black Crowes
Not as offensively bad as other '90s rock
Feels like watching a really experienced accountant filling out tax documents. You might not enjoy it but you have to appreciate the competency.
No es mi tipo de musica
Generischer USA Rock der außer "She Talks to Angels". Nicht umsonst der größte Hit der Band. Sonst pur langweiliges Gitarrenbearbeiten.
Не то чтобы это такая уж плохая музыка, но она опоздала на 20 лет. Лучшая песня: Hard To Handle
It’s like weird discount Aerosmith
is this AI
generic, blues rock. meh.
I'm not sure how anyone would 'shake their money maker' to this? Although then again MY money maker is my brain, and yes, I am shaking my head, so I guess it checks out.
naw didn’t enjoy
Not for me, even the title is annoying
Fuck me that was shite
I mean at least it introduced me to Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle”
not for me
Extremely not for me. Not horrible or anything, and to be fair, I think I can - in my most generous of moods - just about understand what people see in it. But basically, it's like Bon Jovi without any of the charm or pomp. I don't really get it.
I expected to really not like this, but it's kinda fine. The Black Crowes were one of the earlier blues rock revival bands of the 90s, and I'm picky about my values rock proper. At best, this is earnest and energetic and even pretty during a few ballads. At worst this is derivative and a little annoying. The vocals on Hard To Handle are a bit much for example. But songs like Jealous Again and She Talks To Angels aren't bad. Overall, I put this on the low end of "fine" and it's mostly just because this isn't really for me.
Southern Rock. Nothing special.
Remarkably unremarkable. Two stars.
Blue rondo a la turk.
Sorry, but this is pretty boring.
no thanks.
Yet another rock album with absolutely no distinguishing features at all. And this one is even behind the times with how much it would have fitted in with a lot of the stuff from the 70s and 80s. Far from an unpleasant listen, I'll give it that, but there is absolutely nothing remotely memorable or interesting about it.
Reminds me of stopping in at a random gas station on a roadtrip Liked seeing things and hard to handle
Sorry don't be mad but... I just thought it was pretty boring.
A sound of its time. Good but nothing that stuck out to me
Enjoyable enough bar band. Nothing revelatory in the slightest
I do not care.
It’s a fine album, but I honestly found it quite boring
It's dull AF
Don't know what's special about this at all. Ok to have in the background but gets grating and really nothing interesting going on here
Nothing for me here.
A little boring. Others have called it "bar music" which I agree. Don't mind it. Probably won't choose to listen to it again.
meh, another forgettable 90s band, can't really say anything really stood out for me.
I'm torn. I hate the Zeppelin-esque country blues, but I also love just how 90's sounding this album is. Ultimately, it's diet alt-rock; just off-center enough to draw attention, but lacking a lot of the qualities I enjoy about other similar-sounding bands of the era. The Black Crowes are not for me.
This is #day449 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… who gives a fuck about generic blues rock when it's 1990 outside? Seriously. Pub music with plenty of Aerosmith on its sleeves. I do care about music in pubs, but this record isn't the best example. You absolutely don't have to hear it before you die. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day450.
Safe rock. Inoffensive, apart from ‘Hard to Handle’ which offends me to my core with its middle-of-the-road-cheesy-bar rock bollox.
5/10 meh
2.5 stars if I could. It’s alright. In 50 years if someone asks if I’ve listened to this album I’d probably have forgotten about it.
Got some toe tappers on here but really slides off me. Like a lot of southern rock/blues rock worship, this is music for the grill which means that half a case deep, I'll love it and be convinced that it's The Truth. But listening to it intently and sober as an album, it's got diminishing returns track to track.
There were two bands in the 90’s with crows in the name and I don’t know which one I hated more. Based on this album, I hate The Black Crowes more. I knew Hard to Handle, but the original by Otis Redding is much better. I had also heard She Talks to Angels before.
I can’t say anything better than the person that said this was half zeppelin and half hootie. Unfortunately it was the bad half of both of them. I have no song to highlight, as this one was a total slog and an affront to musical originality altogether. But, I must acknowledge that it wasn’t performed horribly, at points. So a very soft 2/5, but should probably be a 1/5 in the context of this list
Seeing Things
Talk about being late to the party!
Boring and generic
It’s not dreadful but I didn’t need to listen to it. Probably better enjoyed with some neon lights, a Budweiser, and a pool cue.
Repetitive lyrics and somewhat annoying vocals. The only thing that I could enjoy was the instrumentation. Favourite Track(s): Thick N' Thin Least Favourite Track(s): Could I've Been So Blind
2.5
Not bad, but also nothing spectacular. The guitar work was pretty good though.
2 1/2. Not my cup of tea.
It’s gotta be tough for a band when your biggest hit is a cover song, which begs the questions of why is this album on the list? I was also wondering the other day of who was ever influenced by Aerosmith, I think I found the answer.
The softer stuff on this album is the best, but i just can't stand bar rock.
Your best friend’s older brother’s band playing at your favorite dive bar
That classic American kinda rock album. Talented, with lots of stories to tell, but just can't hook me. I think I'm just too far removed to even try to like it.
i thought this band was counting crows and i was stoked to listen to it but it was actually some bullshit i did not care about at all
By the numbers rock that was more impressive before you got to know them.
Bog standard blues rock, but that doesn't mean it's all bad. If I was at a state fair and I had a couple beers in me, I'd be super into this. But I don't think it rewards a casual listen that much. If there was something more to this, like more keys or more variety, maybe it would. Though maybe not on the variety front, since the acoustic-heavy "She Talks To Angels" is actually one of my least favorite tracks; the singer's voice seems more suited to rock songs. "Sister Luck" was probably my favorite song, it's slower too, but more of a power ballad. I kind of wonder if this would be as loved if it came out in my the 70s and wasn't seen as a throwback, because I don't think there's any doubt this is inferior to bands like The Rolling Stones.
Something gun'sn roses like. Didn't like. Didn't hate either, but had to combat drowsiness
ass but okay ass
90s but stuck in the dark 80s soft rock era. Not great. Sad rural bar vibes.
Retro tosh
There are maybe two good songs on this
Not my kind of music. Not bad, not good.
neoriginalno, dosadno, zaboravljivo
Always found black crowes vastly overrated, it’s bang average blues rock. Telling the best song is a cover. They’re ok live though.
This was okay. Fairly standard and straightforward bluesy southern American rock. Most of the songs blending together by the end.
Early 90s
Easy listen but not for me. 2 stars
Got me through a 40-minute drive in a monsoon, so I feel positively towards it, but even then it's not great
I was thinking it was a washed out Aerosmith in places. Mostly forgettable.
Twice As Hard is...ok Jealous Again...meh Sister Luck? Sister Suck Could I've Been So Blind is decent Seeing Things...zzzz Hard to Handle is the obvious moneymaker Thick N Thin has a solid groove She Talks to Angels is a standard teenage panty dropper Struttin' Blues kicks. Should've been an earlier track Stare It Cold exists
2.5
Just generic rock.
Generic rock, with some blues too. Twice as Hard sounds like an early harder Nickelback. Definitely sounds later than it is (1990). Could I've Been So Blind reminds me of Slade etc in places. Not that impressed overall, mix of Slade and Nickelback! Quite mediocre, except for the era it was recorded when glam, grunge were dominating rock scene Like a more polished version of KGLW Flight B741 Best track - doesnt matter at all, call it Struttin' Blues 2 stars
It's a fun blues rock album. To me they blend seamlessly with the Stones, Kim Mitchell, Hootie and others. They don't seem to bother with standing out of the crowd, which means they don't belong on this list. I was raised on rock n roll so I like this sound. I will never listen to this album again because there are tens of thousands of more interesting albums. Get it off the list. Two stars cause they do be swinging fr
First time. Derivative. Hard to Handle sounded like plastic. The one about angels was the single and it was ok. Not terrible.
Reminded me of listening to the guys next door drinking until they got into fights
Its aight
Decent cover band?
The Black Crows seem like a long lineage of blue rocks that devolved over the decades. They’re solid musicians and the lead singer is Eddie Vedder adjacent and not unpleasant to listen to. Overall this music is uninspired and unoriginal. They sound like a bad mix of several great bands before them; Skynyrd, Zepplin, Stones, Queen, to name a few. There are albums on this list that are worse but are on the list for being innovative, creative, inspiring, and/or genre defining, but this doesn’t have any of that, or anything that would help shape the understanding of music history. It didn’t shape the way 90s rock would sound, it was shaped by the prior 3 decades. It didn’t inspire the likes of Nirvana, Green Day, The Strokes, TV on the Radio, or any rock band after it, it sounds like a dozen before it. It doesn’t stand out in a crowd, it blends in. I didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t anything special and doesn’t belong on a list of 2001 albums you need to hear. If you ever saw a good cover band at a popular bar venue, you’ve heard The Black Crows. 4.8/10 #52/1001
I like Hard to Handle...but I don't go out of my way to listen to it, and the rest is kind of forgettable generic "American" rock. I don't see how it's influential at all since they didn't invent anything and are clearly the ones influenced by others.
Utterly inoffensive and completely unnecessary
2/5
Ok'ish rock
Not particularly bad, but not something i would return to
were people really clamoring for this sound in 1990? 1990 was a bit of a liminal space in comparison to the decade that followed; the sound of "the nineties" was yet to be solidified, so a beguiling array of genres were competing for dominance, many of them holdovers from the eighties. the Black Crowes, meanwhile, are a holdover from... the seventies? yes, they formed in 1984 in Atlanta, and they play a pretty authentic southern blues rock sound. by the time the band finally released this, their debut studio album, they were six years in, and their musical path had been pretty well-trodden by bands as far back as the sixties. it makes it hard for me to get all that excited about the material on offer since, while the Black Crowes are a capable performing unit, they hardly bring anything new to the southern hard rock formula other than, perhaps, a slight bit of alternative flair on their ballads. they sound like a very talented bar band. Chris Robinson's vocals are as ugly as sin. strong 3/10.
4/10
Like being in a dive bar that’s trying too hard.
Too samey and sounds very dated in 2025
Rock n rolll but not my cup of tea. I know the main single well, pub classic but otherwise won’t re listen
++: Stare It Cold +: Jealous Again, Sister Luck, Could I've Been So Blind, She Talks to Angels, Struttin' Blues, Live Too Fast Blues/Mercy, Sweet Moan +-: Twice As Hard, Seeing Things, Hard to Handle, Thick n' Thin 4,9/10
Feels like I could walk into any local pub on a Friday night and hear music that sounded just like this.
pas écouté en entier, pas trop convaincu
There’s just not really anything worth listening to here. She Talks to Angels is probably the best song on the album, but that’s not saying much.
Not good. It's yelling in my ears and not in a good way. A bit too boring and classical rock for me.
It's alright.
I only know them because of the Hard To Handle cover and that is the only song I cared to listen to. The music reminds me of theme songs for TV shows.
Poh, parece... Genérico? Insira aqui qualquer banca de rock/blues 80/90
This is fine.
Not bad in many ways but simply not my cup of tea
The industry was right, there will always be a place for throwbacks. Enough DJs played and enough people bought this Black Crowes record in the 1990s that it ended up on this list of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. I find music this packaged kind of hard to handle, maybe twice as hard.
Geez, four albums in an we're in a boomer vs boomer influence contest. This is fine, but the Hard To Handle cover seems embarrassing all these years later. If I ask why didn't people just go direct and play the Stone/Zeppelin do I sound too Gen X snarky? Because its fine if I do
It's so catchy and brings me back to my youth. But do I actually *like* it? Idk.
boring
There’s just not really anything worth listening to here. She Talks to Angels is probably the best song on the album, but that’s not saying much.
Sounds like southern rock I've heard a million times before. I feel this is another one the context is important for - in 2025 it doesn't sound like anything special. I bet they put on a good live show.
Can’t decide if I’d like it better as a cover band of the black keys and counting crows
2 Stars (5/15)
Felt a little boring and done before. Won't be relistening
Boring and basic, not my thing, won't relisten
I really struggled to put my finger on quite why I found this album so “vanilla”. The bluesy stuff is nice enough but never exciting, and let’s be honest, the stones were doing it better, with way more swagger twenty years earlier. Was it the vocalist? He sure was as bland as a low calorie chicken korma. The overly American sound? Possibly. Competent musicians who I’m sure would do a great job as a Vegas house band. Something about this hints at if AC/DC had a love child whilst touring the deep south and the offspring grew up listening to blues rock. It’s hard to dislike, but it’s also really really dull. For that reason it’s a reluctant 2 stars just failing a 3.
I feel as though this record is the link between the big 80's rock n roll bands (eg Boston, Kiss) and the early nineties Motley Cru, GnR, Bon Jovi
Notes got deleted. Overall fine album, foundit pretty average. The production of the album proved challenging with my setup. The best songs were the high energy "deep cuts". Favw track: Stare it cold Least fave track: She talks to angels
I don't hate it, and it did bring back a memory of me seeing them open for Aerosmith in 1990 but not something I would seek out to listen to.
Meh. Generic and repetitive. No one will ever to Hard to Handle like Otis. I really just wanted this album to end.
Played this twice now, and I think this is OK, but really is there anything novel here? the first track put me in mind of Led Zeppelin, other tracks were reminiscent of early 70s Stones and Faces. Sort of bar-room heavy rock/R&B. Might be fun to see live but it does seem a bit derivative to me.
Not great, sounds older than it is and not in a good way.
