Reviews (page 6 of 9)

Klassisk sydstats blues-rock Det holder ca. to sange, så bliver det kedeligt. Meget sigende, så er den bedste sang et covernummer

Thing about albums is the transition between songs is unique. On this one, between tracks 1&2 and I instantly was back in college, drinking draft beer out of a red cup in a dingy basement.

Is fine

Just another rock album... nothing great. Power ballads had potential but did not have the voice to make them powerful.

Never been a fan of their hits but we’ll see what else they’ve got

70’s boomer nostalgia bait. Prima, maar ook vrij weinig aan

Fairly standard rock music. Starts blending together a bit by the end but there's some solid tracks. 3/5

Pretty good. Too similar to the Stones.

The best possible version of County Fair Music™️. And just like the county fair, I walked in thinking I was going to hate every second, but by the end, I had just enough of a buzz going to enjoy myself. I’m not saying The Black Crowes are standout musicians; they are Xerox copycats at their strongest, but they can write a modern enough throwback song without feeling more than 60% stuck in the past. Shake Your Money Maker is clean, doesn’t overstay its welcome, and listening to it made me realize that its staying power on classic rock radio surprisingly had some now-obvious influence on the Jets and Wolfmothers and Greta Van Fleets of the world when I think about it. The weakest moments here are not the products of pastiche, but the products of the time, in particular the ‘90s balladry. I’m not saying this record is special, but it’s not a drag; it exceeds expectations, though that’s probably because I placed the bar on the ground before I pressed play. Shake Your Money Maker is like funnel cake. You don’t need to try funnel cake before you die — in fact, maybe you should avoid it if possible — but in the American hellscape of constant fast food, a funnel cake once or twice a year at the county fair isn’t going to hurt you much. And it’s fun! And nostalgic! And a little nostalgia here and there is fun! Now, if you’re constantly having funnel cake outside of that, we have a problem, because how many county fairs are you going to? Do you work for a traveling fair company? Aren’t you sick of funnel cake by now? Are you sick of the county fair? God, being a carny at the fair would be miserable….but at least you’d have funnel cake…. And see, now I want funnel cake! Where was I going with this metaphor?….Oh yeah, not the worst. Whatever 🤷🏻‍♀️

move over greta van fleet this sounds like it could've been released in the 70s but for some reason it's a 1990 album good fun tho, just don't think about it too much

Pretty good but didn’t really stand out to me if that makes sense. 7/10

6/10 - It just sounded like default rock. She talks to angels was alright, so was twice as hard and could i've been so blind. The songs sounded quite similar and sort of like ACDC and other rock bands.

While its not *their* song, I think this is the definitive version of Hard To Handle. Always loved their blues rock take on the classic soul song -- didn't realize it was a cover until I came upon Grateful Dead covering it as well back in the 70s. I really ought to try the original... I've heard She Talks To Angels a thousand times and never realized it was these guys. Essential inclusion for any compilation of 90s music. It is a fine enough, bluesy pop-rock ballad. This album was fine enough, but really is only propelled by its hits. The whole thing feels distinctly 90s. At points it reminded me of Aerosmith -- at others Hootie and the Blowfish. Not bad, but rarely exciting. Low 3 for me.

Good sound, but pretty uniform from start to finish. Liked the energy, but nothing special. Enjoyed the album on just one listen, but it doesn't have me clamoring for a re-listen or more Black Crowes. High 3

She Talks to Angels is a great one. Some songs got a little too hair-metalish but not terrible.

80s/90s rock, gives the vibe of long car summer car journeys with the windows down nodding you head. Stand out tracks: - Twice as hard - Jealous again - Hard to handle - She talks to angels

How have I not heard of the Crowes!

The Black Crowes were always one of those bands that were just alright to me. Nothing mindblowing. She Talks to Angels is great though.

HEARD BEFORE - YES OWNED - YES - CD WILL BUY - N/A Still my favourite Black Crowes album. First bought this in the 90s on CD and still have that copy today. Funny how much of this reminds me of Guns n Roses early stuff, but with a more 70s production style. Still not as good as the Faces or the Stones but it does its job well.

Notable tracks: Hard To Handle, She Talks To Angels, Twice As Hard, Jealous Again, Stare It Cold

Easy listening. Great bar band stylings. Riff rock. Lyrics and vocals right up front. I can't get enough.

Good rock

3.5 maybe leaning more towards a 3 but eventually could be a 4 The first half of the album i definitely preferred. Felt very home grown band making music in a wood panel studio (mean that in best regards) First 5 tracks were stellar and really enjoy “Jealous Again” and the guitar riff on the outro and some of the slower bluesy ballads like “Sister Luck” Least favourite song is “Hard to Handle” not into this cover and “She Talks to Angels” is a great song but might be ruined for me personally by a person I know singing it at karaoke (will say it’s a nice pace changer after all the heavy blues rockers

Favourite tracks: She Talks to Angels, Hard to Handle, Stare it Cold Chris's singing is great. The hits are hits for a reason. Most other tracks are fine, if a bit forgettable. Overall good. 7/10

Not Led Zeppelin…and not Greta Van Fleet…but a secret third thing

I don't know there's a couple good songs on here. And I do like that rocknroll sound. Kinda sounds like what I would expect to hear in biker bars or something. But I don't think I can give it more than 3 stars.

This was fine. Someone else described it as “bar music”. An apt description. Doesn’t make it bad, just not very interesting

Their two hits are nostalgic for me, but beyond that they are rather mediocre. I remember them playing on the radio when I was a kid, and I hadn't heard them in a such a long time.

Too many groups doing otis Redding covers! You’re not as good as him!!

kind of epic but also kind of basic

It was ok

Decent but a little generic

twice as hard- 😳. 5 or 6 jealous again- 4 sister luck- 3 or 4. could ive been so blind- 4. i hate his voice very much seeing things- 5 hard to handle- NO FUCKING WAY. jimmy chance did it better. 5. i do like this 1001 albums project because i find weird connections to songs i didnt know previously. other than the raising hope thing this song is kind of ass thick n thin- 5 or 6 she talks to angels- this songs about a goth girl whos addicted to heroin which you think id be all over but this song is incredibly boring. 5 struttin blues- 4 stare it cold- 4 or 5 very forgettable album. favorite track is think n thin

Looking at the album cover so thought oh a totally new band for me. First song… oh my gosh! I didn’t know this band was called the black crowes!!!

Like the country vibe

Pretty standard rock album, I liked it. Not my favorite genre so it's not gonna get high marks, but did well enough for a 3-star rating.

Would have been a great 80's band, similar to the groups of the 70's. Great for the time

Black Crowes are cool but alot of the songs are quite samey

Not bad but feels like it was done before and better.

Shake Your Money Maker is the debut album from the Black Crowes, and includes some of their early hits. The band makes blues-inspired rock with a Southern element to their sound. Chris Robinson's confident vocals add a swagger to their songs like "Jealous Again," and is strong enough to carry ballads like "She Talks to Angels." Robinson's brother Rich provides driving guitar solos to compliment Chris' vocals. Shake Your Money Maker is the Black Crowes' most successful album, in part for a limitation apparent on this album. This is a good collection of rocking songs, but they all sound very similar. The band writes and performs good, melodic, catchy songs - but with very little variety.

It rocks!

A bit of Aerosmith vibe here but with more grit. I was prepared to call myself too cool to enjoy this but the blues rock really does boogie. Enjoyable! Second half is a bit samey though

Pretty mid rock album. 3/5

So that's where that came from

I think it's a solid album. I will probably listen to it again since it is precisely my genre. However, it didn't touch me, and I can't pick a song that stuck out to me or followed me throughout the day. Side note: it all sounds incredibly American.

The Black Crowes' (Atlanta, Georgia, USA) "Shake your Money Maker" is not my cup of tea to be honest. Sounds very ZZ Top to me, or like something you'd hear on the movie "Cars". Not necessarily bad things, but just not my favourite type of music. Favourite songs: Seeing Things She Talks to Angels (written by one of the band members when they were 15!) 3.3* for me.

God-tier bar band. Rockin’, palatable. Good stuff.

Decent

I honestly didn't realize this came out in 1990. I've heard most of the songs before but I guess I just assumed it came out in the late 90s and not at the start of the decade. I went in thinking that I would probably not like this album as much as I did back in the 90s, but I actually still did. "Seeing Things" gave me some real Joe Cocker "With A Little Help From My Friends" vibes. "Struttin Blues" was a song I hadn't heard before and I think I like it better than the albums hits. That might just be because I'm a sucker for when a band features an organ prominently on a track in just in the right way.

is ok, not really impressed nor offended. its just rock n roll again. i think whoever made this list likes rock music a lot, and not even like experimental rock just straight up rock music

Some good ol rock, lots of hits on here, memorable and timeless. 3.3

Solid enough rock and roll.

relistening to this album after a couple years which was the last time i was here and it really doesnt do anything for me - it is very dull and can see myself liking it 5 or so years ago but its not me anymore id like to give it 3 stars because thats what it deserves but i have to go 2 im going 3 actually because i have some reviews of 2 star albums that this is much better than but its a really low 3 star

Probably half the 5 star ratings for this record don’t even know Otis Redding wrote “Hard To Handle.”

I’ve seen The Black Crowes twice, which is 2 more times than you’d expect for someone who really doesn’t care about The Black Crowes at all. They’re a decent enough live act, and when I listen to this album I forget that they have some pretty fun blues rock music.

so-so.

3/5 pretty generic

Didn’t mind any of it but I wasn’t blown away by any of it.

It's ok... a couple of stand out songs and filled with songs that are good, but not great.

Classic rock vibe in the vein of the Stones and Aerosmith mixed with old school southern rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd. Solid with passionate vocals and strong musicianship, but there's nothing that special or different about it. Highlights: "Twice As Hard" (strong opener that establishes their sound), "Hard to Handle" (modern classic), "She Talks to Angels" (every rock band needs a power ballad...)

Pastiche that goes down smooth is kinda an art form, I guess. Very familiar, maybe in too big a dose.

really excellent guitar work regularly ruined by the vocals, but a listenable album nonetheless

I didn't know I knew any of their songs, but I definitely knew "Hard to Handle" without knowing that that was the name of it. Pretty good!

NOW that's what i call the 90s. 2.5

Oh hey I know a couple of these songs. Another "it was fine" album from this generator, I guess. I appreciated knowing who this had been the whole time I heard their songs on the radio but I don't think I'll be like "ooh yeah let me listen to some more of The Black Crowes" later.

decent romp, not my cup of tea but in the right mood i could revisit.

i liiiike. Kinda a soft rock version of pink floyd

Typical bar music. Not terrible but nothing making it some sort of beautiful masterpiece. Worth a listen though.

Sounded better in 1990

1990 luvun rock iloa tässä... 2000 luvulla poppiin siirtyy tämmöiset huimaus oireita aiheuttava meno..

very good

Black crowes Good band but a bit derivative sounding. Maybe not the worst thing because they do the southern rock/ blues rock thing pretty well. Can totally hear the zeppelin influence on the first tune and the stones on the other ones . I maybe enjoyed this one better than the stones. Would’ve liked it more but there’s so much guitar but nothing special would’ve been better with slash or something. Best song is she talks to angels. Weird that their biggest hit is a cover of hard to handle. They took out all the best most interesting parts of the original too and play it just like a straight rock song. Might be cool to do live but on the album it just makes me want to listen to Otis Redding. 3

Solid 3. Decent southern rock but pretty forgettable and boring. Hard to handle is so much worse than the Otis version. Talks to angels is the best song prob

It was fun and fine!

I like a lot of their stuff this album has some of that and some not so much

Enjoyable, but kinda forgettable

Animada banda. Tiene ritmo y un rollo cañero que no está mal. Si bien no es de lo que más me atraiga y en cierto punto no noto una marcada diferencia como banda propia ni entre canciones, sí que es un grupo agradable de escuchar y que tiene fuerza.

It’s bar music. It’s not ground breaking, but it’s an easy listen

Pretty cool album I was not familiar with.

Good listen. Enjoy.

It's okay.

The Black Crowes have a unique sound.

Good ole fashioned dad rock

Totally fine. Enjoyable even. Don't see what's interesting about it though unless there's some historical context I'm missing.

Just some good ol rock nothing special

Ok enough, I guess

Pretty good album but nothing really outstanding and on the edge of what I like.

Rock and roll with poppy vocal. Ok background music

There are some gems on here, but a lot of the album feels like filler. The hits are the hits, of course, but they are hits for a reason!

Meh. Not bad. I recognize this is good 90s rock. But not really for me.

Solid American classic rock

I like that this sounds more unique than the other classic rock albums we’ve heard. Idk if it’s the singers voice or the production.

Até q um pouco legal. Uma tentativa de modernizar o Hard rock.

A bit too "dad rock" for my liking

I kind of like Hard to Handle

rock’n’roll puro, nudo e crudo. come mamma l’ha fatto.

Carino, ma nulla di eccezionale.

2 classic songs…

The album stared out pretty boring but “Seeing things” had amazingly soulful backing vocals and “Hard to handle” is a ripping southern rocker.

Really solid bar band banger that gets the big rock treatment - B3s, backup singers... just needs a horn section and a monster lead guitar. The radio hits are great and the rest of the album is pretty good too. It's got to be hard to follow up such a popular debut. 3.8

Fine. Felt derivative but could be the genesis of all that type of music. Feel like this service should give a brief history of the bands/album so I know why they’re important.

Good clean rock n roll. I don't like the singers voice so it's tiresome to listen to, but the music is solid if not inspired.

An enjoyable album.

Generic bar rock but done quite well. Don't think their music ever quite translated to the UK as I've always been aware of them, without ever really hearing them anywhere.

Solid rock. 2.75 stars

Southern rockblues rockhard rockrock and roll. Bien.

Decent. I really liked it musically- lyrics were average.

Sweet.

Should be 2, saved by Hard to Handle which is a cover anyway...

FAVO: Hard to Handle

It's fine.

I love She Talks to Angels. The rest of the album was decent. Solid 3 stars.

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve had some AWFUL albums this week, but I found this perfectly acceptable. Pleasant, even. Not the sort of thing that’s gonna set my world on fire, but fun, well-made and well-produced Americana rock. I like the guy’s voice, and it doesn’t overstay its welcome. I remember some of these songs being in heavy rotation on my dad’s radio growing up.

Kings of Leon were here. Simple but effective rock

I liked this well enough but it didn't have any emotional resonance. It was good blues rock and I'd listen to it again... reminded me a bit of earlier Rolling Stones. 'She talks to angels' probably my favourite track. Only track I recognised was 'hard to handle'.

there was a time when i would have loved this album

Un poco country, un poco rock, ta bien. 👍

Southern blues rock. Didn't really care much for this album. It might have been cool back when it was released but this genre/sound is just really boring. Vocals were ok sometimes but when he got really high it sounded thin and annoying. I liked some of the soul elements I guess, the cover of Hard to Handle was ok but I much prefer the original. The album just got old really quick and didn't really switch anything up. Probably won't revisit. 2.5/5

I had thought this would be pretty regular 90s alternative/rock with my very limited experience with this band but it’s actually quite bluesy. It was fine but not a standout for me. Listens: 1 Fave Track: She Talks To Angela Rating: 3

What if The Rolling Stones were white?

Fun album but not particularly special

Much better than expected.

All sounded same

The 90s were supposed to be a grungy, cynical era, so this unpretentious rock and roll album is something of an outlier. I think this is probably the American equivalent of Pub Rock - no nonsense rock’n’roll, nothing fancy but good fun. A particular highlight is a foot stomping cover of Too Hard to Handle by Otis Redding.

Not really my thing but I was in the right mood so it was an enjoyable listen.

The Black Crowes's (not the Robinsons Ego wank we see now) strength has always been its unabashed throwbackness, reasoning that since the Faces were no more, we still need the Faces. We did, and we do, and this buttrock antidote did so admirably, though the next record fully flowered into something wonderful.

I liked this album but it doesn't deserve to be on this list. Especially not when the best song on the album is a cover

CARRIED by hard to handle, 2.5 is the perf rating for me but im in a good mood so im gonna round up

decent enough, like the sound, glad the album wasn't much longer though as woulda started to get old quick I reckon

I like it but it's not ground breaking, IMO.

The bluesy rock works on this album

Even for 1990 this album sounds dated by a couple of years. Nothing on it is bad, but it feels more like the tail end of the hair metal movement rather than something influential that I have to listen to. A lot of the songs feel like wannabe Aerosmith songs that all just kind of sound the same. Once again, none of it is unlistenable (maybe besides Thick N Thin), but this album is just really bland. She Talks To angels is the stand out song. Middle of the road 2.5

Lowkey did not listen to it but I will

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Could I’ve been so blind

Absolutely generic rock. Not much to say about it.

Black Crowes walked so the Black Keys could run.

I like this album but not sure why it’s here. Want to give it 3.5

Not my Style

Great when it has that Stonesy swagger

The Black Crowes are really good at channeling that 70s blues/southern rock vibe. A lot of the songs sound like something the Stones or Lynyrd Skynyrd would do. However, that's all it is. I think it relies too heavily on that sound. Not saying it's bad, but it could've been better.

Allt í fína suðurríkjarokk. Gefið þessu lítinn gaum, fær aðra yfirferð. 3,5þ

Rockroll band.

noice.

Radio friendly rock, but pretty good radio friendly rock. Would be more of a 3.5/5

Decent, not heard of the band but knew one song. Didn't blow me away but it was aight!

Haven’t heard this - Rock album from 1990. Quite enjoy the guitar tone. Good vibes but not for library so 3.

Inconsistent album - it’s not clear what they were going for here

Classic old rock songs that doesn't really do it for me. Vocals annoy me, but the songs doesn't make me angry. Not something I'd put on myself.

but i already own all the good Rolling Stones albums

I mistakenly remembered this album as being more 1990s alternative rock. It is in fact southern rock /bluesy. Nice surprise actually, however as a whole it felt a little generic. The worst offenders being the 2 hits "Hard to Handle" and "She Talks to Angels". 2.5/5

Twice as Hard: I've never heard of this band before. a pre-Nirvana rock album from the 90s, interesting. it sounds very rock. this is a boring song Jealous Again: weird ass piano solo but okay. wow hate the message of this song too. the piano is confusing me. Sister Luck: oh yeah the self-pity anthem for the ages. slef harm? Could I've Been So Blind: tryin hard as nails? I don't understand why this is on the list? Does this capture an era or an ethos or something because I'm not getting it. was listening to lingua ignota yesterday and I miss that. Seeing things: oh a ballad great, just what I wanted. this is the first thing that feels distictly 80s. I assume this was one of the bands that was blasted to bits by the nuclear bomb that was nevermind. oh have sex with me because it hurts to be alone . >:( background singers are a nice touch I'll give it that. the piano is still confusing the hell out of me. the production isn't bad but just confusing. this is a weird as hell track. Hard to Handle: the hit. what the fuck? this is wack. that hook is crazy. also does not sound like 1990, like at all. what the fuck. sounds like he's talking with a cottonball in his mouth. of course a dime a dozen guitar solo in the middle. this sounds like a time capsule to a time that doesn't exist. Thick N'Thin: what the hell was that sound? that some country ass beat right there. that piano again. I swear to god what is it doing on this record I do not understand. Someone please explain. is it me or is this a song about nothing? She Talks to Angels: Supernatural anyone. also another ballad greeeeaaaaattttt. this has the second most streams on spotify. ah a sad girl anthem. lets see how this plays out. but that means everything? WTF?????????????????? idk i don't understand. someone explain. something about the tone tells me this is a bad song but I can't quite put my finger on it. Struttin' Blues: ah another blues. withdrawl song? a key change? whaaaaaaat. they bring energy I'll give em that. I think if I was in the right mood I could enjoy this. but it's pretty meatheaded. Stare It Cold: another drug song def. I do think this is the most interesting material on the album. this is a weird fucking album time capsule from 1990, honestly hard to believe. I don't understand what's so important about this album. but okay.

Rock, RnR, 1990, gut

Un bon album rock, sans plus.

The Black Crowes really want you to know how hard they are. Even Kenny G up front there. In seriousness though, this is just your basic nothing special 90’s rock. I like some of these songs, but they’re not my favourites. It’s just part of the 90’s soundscape; old shoes I put on when I’m taking my household trash out to the bins.

Fun and upbeat, but a bit silly and pop forward.

-Great 90's homage to classic and Southern rock -They still seem to be everywhere -Some of the non-chart hits seem like filler -fun every once in a while, but you quickly get your fill

Fun throwback with some classics

Pretty good album, I like his voice. Just didn't feel that unique

A handful of bangers mixed in with a bunch of "good enough" sounding songs. Also makes me think back to sitting in a car seat while my mom plays "She talks to Angels" on my ride to school back in 2004

Really no better than just okay, though somewhat better (or less annoying) than one remembers, with utter lack of originality the main shortcoming. This is at best a decent simulacrum of vintage Stones, but without you know, the quality or authentic attitude to pull it off. Or maybe it's warmed-over Steppenwolf given that the forgettable "Struttin' Blues" so obviously rips off "Born to Be Wild." Or perhaps more like a diluted Aerosmith (slightly less embarrassing [but only slightly] in reaching for acclaim). Or second-rate (okay, 2.5-rate) Faces. And very little to do with the Allman Bros, who bring a much jazzier and jammier sensisbility, as well as country swing that's completely absent here, and much greater virtuosity (both musically and lyrically) in contrast to the BC's utterly unsurprising, nearly paint-by-numbers soloing. (Editors have little grasp of "Southern Rock" – just because it's from Georgia doesn't mean it's like Skynyrd or ABB or ....). Robinson has a credible R&R voice, but one hears the strain to live up to the rock legend status he clearly has in mind for himself. He tries too hard, basically. That they didn't last makes sense, as the world sometimes does. The question of whether Mr. Crowe's Garden was actually the better band was one of the biggest what-if debates in ATL indie rock/college radio at the turn of the decade, though everyone mostly agreed that BCs were complete poseurs and generally lame in a very obvious kinda way.

Not much to Crowe about

Couple of good songs, but not really for me.

It's some solid blues rock. Outside of the singles it tends to blend together a bit, but those singles are good fun, and the playing overall is solid too. Not something i'm likely to come back to, but it was worth a listen.

wild that this came out in the 90s when they’re so clearly trying to sonically emulate the 60s/70s rock dudes that being said many bangers and i f w it

It was good, but nothing really stuck with me. It’s really nothing compared to Led Zeppelin, but I didn’t feel like I wanted to turn it off either.

Honestly I really liked this… I feel like there was something slightly missing, and if that had been there, it would have brought it above average, however, pleasantly surprised by this album.

I remember when this first came out and it felt like it had been around since the 70s. Enjoyed the radio hits, but don't think that I'd ever choose to listen to this album again.

Fine album. Nothing special, just some fine music. Won’t listen again. 5/10 Top 3: 1. Seeing Things 2. Hard To Handle 3. She Talks To Angels

better than i thought still just sounds like the american stones….

Obviously a southern boogie blues bar rock band who wanna be the Stones, but don't quite make it, mainly because the singer doesn't quite have the necessary authority. It's ok but I would sooner listen to Free, Lynyrd Skynyrd or the actual Stones.

I knew 3 of these songs I think - they're a one-trick pony, but it's a decent trick. I didn't hate it anyway.

Rock'n'roll bb. I wasn't in the mood, but this made me feel like I was in the early 90's/late 80's

another fine album that didn't really do much for me, even after two listens. the songs are all pretty samey and unfortunately the one song they wrote wasn't one i really cared for. i can definitely see how people would like this sort of music but i just don't think it's anything special. the songs i knew going into it are still my favorites, and hard to handle is definitely the best one here. favorites: hard to handle, she talks to angels

Great debut album by a band that let's you know what they are from the opening riff, southern fried Led Zeppelin. A handful of weak tracks knock this down from a 4 to 3.

Led Zeppelin by way of the American South. Nowhere near as transcendent as that band’s best work, but still a pretty good time.

Prilično sam siguran da je svaki ili skoro svaki naš gitarski bend iz devedesetih donio ovaj album denykenu kao referencu za svoj zvuk. I pod svaki mislim majke i kojoti😃

Throwback blues/southern rock. Trying to sound like the 60's was never as cool as it was in the 90's. I know them best for their electric hit Hard to Handle, which was nice on relisten. I don't think Shake Your Money Maker has anything special to offer. I was pretty underwhelmed the entire time.

Forgettable but not bad

I've never listened to the Black Crowes before but they sounded super familiar, I can only assume that they inspired a lot of later bands

disappointed was not counting crows

Väldigt välgjort men inte för tilltalande till mig.

With two great tracks, this album seems full of filler. Guitar riffs are good but the scene itself leaves some to be desired

sucks until the second half

Pianorock pauhaa poppistyyllin. Menevää, mut ei myöskään paljoa sen enempää. 3/5.

The return of southern rawk. For me songs ranged from catchy to inoffensive. Surprising number of singles seem to come off this record but I can’t see myself reaching for it. If I want that sound l would just throw on Exile on Main St. Also, didn’t sound anything like the original Black Flag version of “Jealous Again”…

Nice Rock record but that kinda makes it very average

Solid rock album.

I mean it's not bad but they were a bit fucken late to the party with this sound lmao

It was a consistent album, just none of the songs I was like "wow I need this in my playlist". it feels more like background music at a restaurant

Reminds me of Bad Company, with touches of Rod Stewart and the Faces, with a bit of Led Zeppelin blues thrown in for good measure. I liked it.

Yeah, a fun rock and roll album!

at times good, at times generic rock

When people ask why rock died, you can answer with bands like The Black Crows. Literally nothing original to be found here. Every note, every vocal has been done to death. If this came out twenty years earlier... maybe. But by 1990, this had been done a million times. It's a snoozefest from start to finish.

It’s classic rock and roll. I like but don’t love.

Es bien rocanrol. Me gustó, tiene buenas cosas.

Least fav: could I’ve been so blind Fav:Hard to handle- really only b/c I’ve heard it before The only reason it isn’t a 4 is because there is this weird high pitched ringing noise throughout the record, it ruins a lot of songs

I imagined blasting this album while cruising along the highway in my pickup on the west coast, but I can not imagine listening to this album in any other way haha

Yea it's ok

3/5 It's a decent album with some interesting elements for a 90s rock revival. Same flavor as the usual hair metal RnB/rock blend. Not bad, nothing too new

Standard 90s poppy college rock type stuff p solid tho

pretty solid album w some classics. just a 3 tho

Solid throw back rock n roll

Ok, mostly generic with a few standouts.

un rock un po' leggero e un po' pop, non sembra male. Però provano tutte a essere ballad... MMM

This has to be like the most influential album ever for lame dads everywhere. As soon as I heard hard to handle start I could hear the grills get fired up and the belts looped through all the Jean shorts get tightened. While it definitely feels like the most cliched dad/bar rock album ever, there’s nothing necessarily wrong with that. It filled up 43 minutes with not totally awful rock music I guess.

This would be a 2 without "Hard to Handle". Super bland generic rock for me, didn't make me feel anything.

I remember the Black Crowes from the early 90's ... basically a 70's imitation blues band. Today the music seems somewhat dated to me ... the songs are kinda old-hat, predictable. A good album, but I'm just not in the same place I was back then.

Pretty good straight ahead rock

Fairly mediocre late 80s/early 90s rock. Not bad, not great, just good.

Like a 2.8

Niet super origineel, maar wel gewoon prima.

Great 90s Rock. Love his voice and their sound

Decent retro rock album. Nothing new, but it was different from what everybody else was doing at the time. Songs are quite generic, but the singer lifts them to a higher level. Favorite song: She talks to angels.

Deze had ik 'op CD' en ik had hoge verwachtingen, maar ik ben 't een beetje ontgroeid. Met enige moeite toch 3 sterretjes.

some good tunes

Great jams! Added two songs.

A good background album of solid rock songs. a few quite good songs to save to playlists. 'Seeing Things' gave me a good feeling of Joe Cocker which I liked and Favourite track of course is Hard to handle.

Cover bands and divorced women in bedazzled jeans have one thing in common. They love the song hard to handle. The black crowed are pretty decent and makes some good causal southern rock songs. It just so happens that their style has become so generic and boring that to listen to it now feels like it lacks any creativity. Their music is good but it falters being in between classic rock and modern alternative. Either way it’s better than most on this list. 6.5/10

I have never listened to this album, but somehow I never every single song.

I listened the Shake Your Money Maker a lot when I was a kid. My Dad loved it and I had plenty of nostalgic moments listening to it again, it was many years ago. Overall, I enjoyed the hits, but the other songs don’t stand out that much to me. 3 out of 5 stars.

On the one hand, it's hard not to like this brand of retro (even for the time) blues rock. It's reminiscent of so much blues inspired, sloppy, classic rock such as early 70s Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, or The Faces. On the other hand, I find the singer's voice irritating. It's vocal fry without the growl that makes that kind of singing interesting. After awhile, I just can't listen to it any more.

I liked the production on this a lot and thought the kind of country/hard rock fusion was interesting and pretty unique. Unfortunately the songs themselves were nothing too special and I got pretty bored in the back end.

3/5. An upbeat rock album with some blues involved. The best songs are the only good songs. Other songs are kind of skippable but still enjoyable.

Pretty generic southern rock

skoj? kanske!

Highlights: "Twice as Hard," "She Talks to Angels" A major difference between 90s and 00s music outside of hip-hop and R&B is that the "Alt" umbrella effectively contained "country rock". Even grunge bands by and large shared in qualities that would later be monopolized by "country" in the kitschy national cultural divorce of the Bush administration. So this album coming right on the dot in 1990 is certainly prescient if not extremely influential. The charisma of the drawl in bright, melodic tenor over waves of distortion that carries this album also lends success to Nirvana, STP, Alice in Chains, Fuel, Live, Train, on and on until it gives way to grizzled macho baritone-tenor in the 00s. There's actually color and diversity to most of the lyrics; the bridge of "Talks to Angels" kind of tramples its ideas, but otherwise it's really a pretty clever and sad song. Southern-ness in rock music eventually became a lodestone for ever-accumulating *prescription* until former rock-dominated Midwest states were ruled by country rock per se that was lyrically literally just consumerist catechism, so this also has value as a memento of a more earnest and authentic period for those characteristics in music.

Not really my thing but it’s pretty neat.

Dadrock medio fome/ me cuesta prestarle atencion xd. 6.5/10

There was a time I would have been super into this, but it didn't age well at all for me. Best track: Hard to Handle

This is a little tricky for me to score because this is not my kind of music, but I realize that this is a really well done album. They certainly captured the spirit of 70s southern guitary blues rock with piano and brought it forward to the 90s. I do appreciate listening to something good that I wouldn't have chosen, but I also won't be putting it on again anytime soon.

solid bar rock, nothing id come back to

Middle of the road road and roll. My guess is that their influences were Rolling Stones and ZZ Top. I remember Hard to Handle being a hit for them but never understood a single word of the lyrics including the words Hard to Handle. Nothing here to upset anyone but also nothing to get to excited about.

In their best album, Black Crowes evokes 70s southern blues rock through the use of power chords, a loud and energetic vocalist, and gospel-inspired back vocals and piano on certain songs. It's one final classic hurrah before alt rock takes over. I wouldn't say it's innovative, with a few forgettable songs and plenty of repetition, but it's certainly executed and produced well. Even the mandatory power ballad "She Talks to Angels" isn't that bad. Favorites: Twice as Hard, Sister Luck, Hard to Handle

Performances are good, especially the vocals. Recording is solid. If only the Led Zeppelin albums were engineered this well. It's a great collection of songs with a couple of standout singles. After all, though, it's pastiche.

Fun, very good without crossing the line into great

Not bad

maneirinho

sci-fi folk :-)

Not bad at all. But not much happens. 2 Holy shit "Hard To Handle" is so iconic, didn't realize it was their song. 3 It holds up

i mean i had fun with this album while i cleaned my room, it’s just not my favorite style.

Well this was quite funny I thought! Hilarious name for the album. I felt like it was all so typical of the genre, like the songs and what they were about were incredibly typical. Unsurprisingly - troubled women. But overall I quite enjoyed it

Didn't mind this. At first I just thought it sounded like a less good Faces but after a while I got into it. Nothing to write home about but not bad.

This is not my genre at all (I think it's Southern Rock/blues mixed with a bit of metal and grunge?), but I enjoyed this album full of big hits, catchy songs, and driving energy. I can see why it had such a commercial success. I'm not sure it's super original, and after all their greatest hit was an Otis Redding cover, but they seemed to have shown appropriate respect for their sources and it's a fun album. Sort of like comfort food in music form. It's hard to choose 3 or 4 for this one - but I'm going 3 because it was not groundbreaking in anyway.

Ok. Felt really if it’s time though

Solid, no bullshit, rock n roll.

It’s alright. It’s a great rock record, but nothing unique or new really.

"Hard to Handle" is the best song by far but I thought the rest of the album was alright.

Typical southern rock / bar music. This one came out in the nineties and it's pretty clear they follow a, by then, tried and true formula. Fun to listen to, for a bit, but in the end didn't really grab me past the halfway mark. Think I'd rather listen to the older rock classics than this.

This takes me back- stylised glammy, bluesey rock. It's good and easy to listen to. This kind of this never seems to date.

This album is actually proof to me that I don't hate this genre, just the bands that I have been forced to listen to for most of my life. There were a few lowpoints that I had to force myself not to skip, but overall a solid listen. Favourite tracks (in no particular order): Hard to handle, Thick n Thin, She Talks to Angels, and Jealous Again.

"Shake your money maker" is a pretty weird slang phrase. Of course I'm saying this as someone who doesn't live in a culture that uses such phrase. Still, I was a bit surprised at how generic it was. It's a pretty decent blues-rock album, but I'll probably remember 0 of those riffs. Maybe this shake your money maker thing is not as weird as I think it is. Is this what they call "dad-rock"? Christian rock sans Jesus? Maybe. Kudos from being a non-boring, energetic dad-rock of an album though.

It's a nice heavy late-nite blues rock album that came out in the time when grunge was getting absolutely huge. Lenny Kravitz already showed a year earlier there was still a market for 70's rock. So here The Black Crowes came with an album that really was nothing new, a combination of The Stones, The Faces and Rod Stewart. But it rocked. And still does.

Wenn etwas insignifikant ist, du kannst es The Black Crowes rufen

Enjoyable, but I always waiting for the blast...

a few decent ones

This was retro rock when it was released. It was refreshing to hear this type of music on the radio in in 90, but if I wanted to hear this type of music, I was more likely to play the Stoned, Faces or the underrated Free. Don't get me wrong, this is kick-ass rock and roll and that is always welcome. Some songs are very good, and She Talks to Angels is a classic. While a welcome respite from a lot of dreck on the radio in 1990, this is derivative, albeit very good derivative music. I would give 3 1/2 if an option. Today, for reasons I can't articulate, I will grade down.

Impressive debut album. Definitely a lot of emotion in the lead vocals. Strong rock mixed with blues. Seeing things and talks to angels are the standouts for me. A bit too upbeat and hard jammy for me but solid nonetheless as a body of work.

Good rock album. Some nice singles and there's some country influences in some of the songs.

Was alright, bit too clean sounding for mine but still a good sound

listen

Pretty good

Listened to this one a lot growing up.

I don't have much to say about this album. The songs were inoffensive. Not bad, but not amazing either. My favourite song was Twice as Hard.

Best Song:Seeing things

decent

The album was ok. I knew a couple of songs. I have no need to listen to it again. It is mainly rock. It is just there. The album better is than a 2. Not really a 3. I will round up.

Enjoyed. Sounded a bit repetitive at times but did like. Had a classic rock n’ roll sound. Favourite songs: Jealous Again, Seeing Things, Hard to Handle.

Easy to listen to and enjoy, albeit a bit generic sounding at times. I recognized the song "Hard to Handle". I would re-listen to this album.

Sounds like the classic rock I heard a lot growing up. This genre has largely worn out its welcome for me.

Listened to this album while walking outside and it was perfect for the activity. A couple good ones in here especially Hard to Handle which is a classic. Great way to kick off the week!

Here's a band I know, and the album has their one big hit that I know too. I didn't realize until today that "Hard to Handle" is actually a cover. Apparently the original is by Otis Redding, but it's the signature song for these guys (and I do prefer the energy of their version). Nothing crazy about this album, but it gets the job done. Pretty good blues-ish pop rock, if that's a thing. Favorite tracks: Hard to Handle, She Talks to Angels, Could I've Been So Blind. Album art: A pretty simple band photo, though it looks like it's from the '70s. 3.5/5

Solid 3.44 rounded down to a 3.

Not bad at all but about half the songs didn't stand out to me. I'm not a huge fan of this style (I think - maybe it was just my feelings during this listen) so that didn't do it any favors. That being said, it was a perfectly serviceable album.

Prefs: Twice as Hard, Hard to Handle, Thick n'Thin, Struttin' Blues, Stare It Cold Moins pref: Seeing Things

I I really enjoyed this album, especially the 70’s guitar sounds in a lot of songs which I think for 1990 was unusual. Hard to Handle is of course a classic, other favorites were Jealous Again, Twice as Hard, Stare it Cold. I remember I used to like She Talks to Angels but I just wasn’t feeling it Friday. Struttin Blues was incomprehensible for me.

I enjoyed this album. Although didn't love it. Hard to Handle stood out to me, I enjoyed that song in particular. 55/100gecs

Pretty good bluesy riffs. Finally realized he's saying "hard to handle" after all these years.

My dad had this on cd when I was a kid, so pretty nostalgic. Otherwise not the most original, pretty derivative of led zeppelin

decent album, she talks to angels is the best

Meh. It's fine, it is just plain and boring. It is not bad, but I don't think it is anything special.

The lead singer used to bang Kate Hudson. My favorite Black Crowes song is "Remedy", which isn't on this album. They never fulfilled all of those early promises proclaiming they were the next Rolling Stones. Turns out they weren't even the next Aerosmith. This album hit big at around the only time in music history when it could have an impact. The whole musical landscape, particularly the idea of rock music, would change dramatically the following year.

These guys are kinda up my alley but I've never given them much of a chance... this is pretty cool. Every song sounds the same, but it's a nice song so 3/5.

Know of them....feel like I will say early Stones rip off....here goes...first thought are that the production is tight. Its ok you know . Would i play it much in the future probably no. Like the texture from the keyboard. Voice and guitars are strong. Still a 3.

Hard to argue with, I guess. Well put together, lots of hits. But I'd rather listen to Tom Petty...

The hooks are quite catchy, but it gets samey very fast.

Unohtanut jo koko bändin olevan olemassa. Tätä on joskus 90-luvulla popitettu veljen hienosta stereo-järjestelmästä ja pelattua nintendoa tunteja putkeen. Toimii edelleenkin vaikkakin levyn alkua vaivaa kevyt tasapaksuus.

Toimii! Erittäin hyvää perussettiä

A weird one, it's derivative of so much great music that came before but sounded like nothing else that was popular at the time it released. Admittedly, I loved it at the time but would now gravitate to older, more 'genuine' sounds now.

Some standout songs in here though it didn’t stick with me enough to go higher than 3.

This was a little underwhelming but had some good songs. She talks to Angels obviously great... This should be a 3.5

It was okay, had some fun guitar. But not really my type of music.

Some good old fashion greasy blues-rock in the style of classic Rolling Stones. Nothing particularly memorable to me but a lot of fun. 3.5 🌟

Equal parts rock and blues Chris Robinson and crew put a great foot forward. Too many of the songs blend together. In the standout moments though this album delivers. Whenever there is one.
