more like the crap lowes
This one was pretty cheugy but I actually didn’t hate it.
I can definitely see how this album probably had a big impact when it first came out, especially considering what was popular at the time. However, I will never be a fan of this band. Throughout my childhood, this band was always playing in the background, and it was annoying then, and it’s still annoying now. This is one album I would like to just keep buried in the past.
Sounds like any other hard rock's band album and i feel like i already heard these songs somewhere. For a debut album, disappointing. From a rock band, totally as expected. I can feel some competence coming from this band, but want something less generic.
Just not very interesting to me. Maybe I should learn to appreciate the “hard rock” vocal style and do a relisten. Favorite song: Sister Luck Least Favorite song: Could I’ve Been So Blind
Sounds like Aerosmith and other rock bands of the late 80's/early 90's. We get it, you're rebels without a cause. Nothing to write home about. No songs for me. The music isn't bad, it just doesn't have its own point of view.
Tråkigt!
not my style at all, but not terrible
The first comment I saw about this was something like "This band would have been really successful in the 70s". Yes, maybe. They do have a good throwback sound and great musicianship and the songs are enjoyable to listen to. It's easy to imagine hearing them at a smoky concert, contemporaries of Dire Straits, Led Zeppelin and Status Quo. But this album isn't innovative or different or particularly exciting to me, and it's not a classic either. I suppose at least it is new, in the sense I had never heard of the band. When I get a band I have never heard of, I get a little bit excited, but this is unwrapping a Christmas present to find a version of a gift you have already got.
Totally forgettable.
My head really didn't need this today.

Groupe inconnu. Rock pas désagréable, mais très standard et assez mou. Je n'y reviendrais pas. =>2/5
While taking a cheeky look at the reviews as this album was playing, I have seen a bunch of reviews call this “pub rock”, or “generic”; and while I find myself in agreement with these statements. I also want to add that nearly all of the songs on this album, to me, embodies the very soulless department of commercialized, corporatized, and sanitized rock music. The kind of rock music designed to be safe. The kind of rock music designed to be immediately played on a daytime radio show that your co-worker, who loves everything the radio plays and finds zoo morning radio shows hysterical, probably enjoys. But, probably most insultingly, this is the kind of rock music that immediately comes to mind when a TV show needs a outro track. Or a generic action movie that needs a generic up-tempo track to start the end credits on. Like this album is fine? The Black Crowe’s show their influences proudly (spoiler alert: it’s mainly The Rolling Stones). However, I don’t feel like they’re necessarily making anything groundbreaking or standout worthy here. It’s fairly inoffensive, the musicianship is serviceable, and the lyrics are pretty standard rock ‘n’ roll stuff. But it just feels like I’ve heard it all before, and I have heard it done better by artists from an era when a release like this would have been a little lost in the shuffle. I’m sure it was advantageous to the band that this might have been seen as a breath of fresh air after the hair metal stuff fizzled out in the 80’s. But it’s like saying the 1998 remake of ‘Psycho’ was great because it’s basically a shot-for-shot recreation of a suspenseful 60’s classic after the bombardment of slasher movies from the 80’s and 90’s. Anyway, ‘Shake Your Money Maker’ is just okay. Yes, it is generic pub rock that feels derivative (rather than inspired by) of bluesy rock ‘n’ roll from the 70’s. But it isn’t totally bad by any means; it’s just insanely forgettable and safe to the point that it left virtually no impression on me as the album ended. 2/5
I’m thoroughly convinced that I subconsciously don’t give a shit about The Black Crowes. For whatever reason, I don’t really enjoy their songs. Maybe it’s Chris Robinson’s vocals or maybe it’s because I’m not a huge fan of southern rock, but I just don’t care. All of their songs sound literally the same, with little differences. And every single song, my attention span keeps waning before the songs are halfway done. I kind of like the hits (Hard to Handle, Jealous Again, She Talks to Angels), but I just don’t like going through Black Crowes albums. If the Southern Harmony and Musical Companion is on this project, I’m going to be very miffed. Favorite track: Hard to Handle Other hits: She Talks to Angels, Jealous Again, Twice as Hard, Sister Luck
Good at what they do, but I don’t like what they do.
A competent but pretty forgettable straight rock album. The Otis Redding cover was decent. Dunno why this album is considered a "must-listen".
She talks to Angles is a good record...the rest is forgettable.
uninteresting
I just don’t
Meh. Inoffensive. Sounds a bit like the Stones, a bit like Bryan Adams.
Incredibly unremarkable
Oh fuck no! This is a faded carbon copy of 70s Rolling Stones. The Black Crowes were a competent (but not extraordinary) bar band that had the good fortune to get spotted by George Drakoulis, who coached them with an appropriate list of band to study and emulate (Stones, Faces, Humble Pie). This record was produced by Drakoulis (who became the go-to guy for that 70s blues rock throwback sound), exquisitely recorded by Brendan O'Brien, with keyboards by Chuck Leavell (former Allman Brothers Band member and musical director for the Rolling Stones since 1982). All that would make any half-decent band sound awesome, even if the songs just really aren't there. Most of the lyrics (and all of the song titles) are a shitty pastiche of cliches inspired by Exile on Main St. The record is just imitation, and nothing makes that plainer than their first single, a cover of "Hard to Handle". This made me angry at the time and just as angry now; a bunch of white boy wannabes doing a dodgy Otis Redding impression. I'm sure it's kind of good if you've never heard Otis. But, if you are familiar with Otis, then it's a bit shit. But it got a lot of radio play and sold a zillion copies. This album is clearly only on the list because it reminds Dimery of the music he loved when he was a teenager. "Why do we need new bands? Everyone knows rock attained perfection in 1974. It’s a scientific fact." says Dimery^h^h^h^h^h^h Homer Simpson. It is a bit of a relief that, these days, the Black Crowes seem to be fading from memory and relevance. Their last reunion tour was greeted with skepticism by even their fans. The sooner that the culture forgets that the Black Crowes ever existed, the better. 1.5 stars, rounding up because it is a pointless record, but not hateful.
Fine, but not great
Apart from a couple of good tracks it is exactly what you would expect if you think of the black crowes - sadly not for me
I just couldn't get into this guy's voice
Meh.
feel the same as i felt about boston, it's obviously technically good but there's nothing interesting going on
Probably give this one a miss too
Øv for en skefuld sydstats country klaver pjat. Endelig drænen og kedeligt!
2/5 for first listen, will listen to it properly sometime soon.
Generic American: the album.
literally all of these songs sounded exactly the same to me highlights: could i’ve been so blind, hard to handle (mar 17 2026)
Competent, and also different from 1990 rock but totally meh...
Solid album that I still own. Admittedly, I have not listened in some time. Listening now there are still a few songs I like, others sound dated. Overall, it’s a 2.5…..but since that’s not allowed it’s a 2.
Not crazy about this music born in the wrong decade.
some fun 90s rock - nothing too crazy going on.
Boring, uninspired, unoriginal, and forgettable rock radio fodder. Just a less interesting version of blues rock that came 20 years before it. I hate this type of shit but it’s not actually bad enough to give it a 1
Some very groovy bits!!
Hard to Handle is a classic track. The rest is hard to handle.
File under "Meh."
Ganske kjipt
Not bad, kind of fun even. Better songs than Lenny Kravitz, but the same generation of early 90s classic rock revival, just ripping off the Americana-era Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd instead of Jimi Hendrix. The most famous song is an Otis Redding Cover. I guess they came on the scene as a lot of the big 1st gen classic rock bands were hitting a nadir so there was a gap in the market they happily filled and somehow became a thing, but I've never been able to see them as much more than a genre tribute act. It's country-inflected blues-based rock with big guitar and some gospel touches. A genre I like and they're good at it, but nothing new to see here folks, move it along.
While the music is well played and the record is well produced, I still don’t like this. It’s the whole calculated retro sound-a-like cash grab that is off-putting. It’s nouveau drinking music for mid-western white guys. Feels mind-numbing and ultimately, soulless. 2/5
A generic rock album, nothing stood out to me except Hard to Handle (and even then likely only for nostalgic reasons)
Not bad, but nothing special to my ears.
Biased. I hate this guys voice so much
At some moments I found myself getting drawn in, mainly due to the production and guitar but overall this leaves me kinda thoughtless. Not the worst music ig.
I can see how this would be refreshing in 1990, but it still just sounds like generic blues rock to me. It’s between The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith and it doesn’t really work for me.
Jealous Again
Nothing new to see here. Annoying drumming. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith lite.
Du pareil au même tout au long de l'album. À plusieurs reprises j'avais l'impression d'écouter la même chanson. La seule chanson que je connaissais, Hard to Handle, est au départ une pièce que je trouve tellement overrated et cliché. 4/10
not bad but nothing besides that one song really stood out, kind of blended together, didn’t feel very innovative or memorable sorry, i appreciate the sound and why people like it i guess, idk it was kind of boring kind of bland, but there were a couple moments i guess just not enough to really do it for me
Pre-listening notes: I have never known this band by name nor heard of this album. I have heard the incessantly played “Hard to Handle” which I recently found out is a cover and the original is by Otis Redding (whose version I prefer!). This is probably just gonna be generic bar rock music. Post/during listening thoughts: I think I was right in my assumptions. A whiny voice paired with harsh instrumental = the perfect music to play in a bar and have to yell over to be heard. It’s not like the worst stuff I’ve ever heard but I wouldn’t waste my time with this. It sounds like I put on 105.9 The Mountain™ at 6 in the morning. Normally I would write about individual tracks a little more but this album feels like pure filler. I can’t express how much I hate this man’s voice. She Talks to Angels might be the only standout on here sorry 4/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: hell no Fav tracks: She Talks to Angels Least favs: Seeing Things, Thick N Thin, Stare it Cold
This album has committed the cardinal sin for rock projects on this list…it’s just so damn boring. Nothing innovative, nothing exemplary, and surely no anything risky.
Aerosmith + RHCP = The Black Crowes This is not a good thing.
Mediocre and slightly annoying album, average songs, nothing spectacular. I'm not a fan of the vocalist, it's just a bit too much for me. Overall a weird poaition on this list, very forgettable.
Ugh, made me want to drink lite beer, wear a sleeveless denim jacket and hit over sized pool balls unnecessarily hard. I was going to give it a second chance but decided to listen to Counting Crows instead.
This album was so unremarkable and generic that I forgot I was listening to it
Hard to handle
🥴
Not my thing
wasn't very memorable
Mid
A boring southern rock album with the most interesting song being a cover of an Otis Redding original. Not impressed, though it wasn't the worst I've heard on here. 2/5.
There are a few really solid tracks on here. But the rest, well, just kind of fades into the background. It’s hardly offensive, but it just makes so little impression. I can appreciate the stripped-down aesthetic, especially in remembering the early ‘90s, where we all strove for a way to throw off the overly-excessive ‘80s. But one would think this pretty average even from a bar band, much less given how lauded these guys were at the time.
Some mediocre elements surrounded by mostly crappy music
It's okay. American rock
This was just so incredibly not for me. I will be honest, I only listened to about half, and I couldn’t handle the overly polished “rock.” Worse really than the Eagles. Listen, I’m writing this on June 28, 2024, today saw the release of over a half dozen new albums I was so excited to check out and they were all pretty great. So maybe skip this one and listen to Dirty Three, Mabe Fratti, Folk Implosion, GBV, or any of the others that came out today.
This was pretty bad.
I'm not much of a fan of this Southern type of rock n' roll, it all feels a bit like a caricature.
Not my type of music.
This was some generic rock. At least from its time period, which is honestly the most tragic when it comes to “generic” music. Anyway, this thing is very stale, aside from a few good tracks (“Seeing Things,” “Jealous Again,” “Sister Luck,” and “Hard to Handle”) and for the most part feels like a repetitive hodgepodge of why this sub-genre of rock is so damn repetitive. For what it is, the instrument playing is not bad, but those few good tracks simply can’t save an album like this from mediocrity.
Another typical good-but-uninteresting 90's rock album
Hard to handle is fun, not sure I'm bothered about the rest
dad blues rock? soundgarden silverchair?? no thanks
tries too hard
Ugh I might give this an extra star just for nostalgia and because I can sing all the words of like three songs haha! But listening to this now is super tedious, boring, and nothing special. I take back the extra star!!
I can vibe with this kind of rock but this album just didn’t do it for me. I don’t know why but it felt like a bit of a slog.
Not my cup of tea 2*
Ya okay. Sometimes “unobjectionable” is exactly what you’re after.
As pedestrian and generic as rock gets.
His voice is annoying. I don’t understand why Hard to Handle is popular.
Didn’t really care for it. 2.4
You know when you hear a song and you go "OH! So this is _______!" Yeah, that with this group. LOL A Black Crowes song every now and then is ok, but I won't be listening to another album of theirs from start to finish.
Arena rock. Wasn't bad but didn't excite me at all.
”Bar Rock” indeed. Sounds mostly like inoffensive pop and lyrics to be tolerated only as bland backgrounds. Monotone. And there’s Almost no energy to this thing—it’s downright soporific for a ”rock” album. She Talks To Angels the only notable track, and the ending of stare it cold I guess.
I think this list suffers most often from one glaring issue. I can’t help that some of these albums are just flat out boring. Or at least not that interesting. And that isn’t going to change no matter how hard I try to like them. In the large number of blues and hard rock albums that already exist on this list, who are probably more deserving of a placement, this record is out of place. You could maybe make the argument that this represents a transitional period in rock history. As hair and glam metal got pushed out, and grunge became the new thing, this album sits right in the middle and almost goes against the musical trends of the time. But it’s really not that special. And I think there was already so much of this kind of music by 1990, that what the grunge movement gave us is far more worthwhile. I don’t mean to discredit the band. They actually sound like a very talented group of people. But this is to blues music what AC/DC was to hard rock. Just about as strait laced and basic as you can get. Total bar rock music. Every song sounds just about the same, and none of them do anything particularly cool to maintain my interest. You know that scene in Paul Blart: Mall Cop where Kevin James gets super wasted and wrecks a bar? This sounds like the music you hear in the background of that scene. There is someone out there who has some attachment to this, possibly because it represents a part of their childhood. And that’s great. But I’m putting on half a dozen other blues artists before this is even thought of. Rating: 4/10
Stones rip off. 2
This is a prime example of dad rock. And unfortunately not in a very good way. The album starts out nice enough with two okay songs which have good choruses. Then the good choruses disappear along with the quality of the songs, and all we are left with is boredom. The singer has a good voice, the band play well, but there's nothing, aside from the two starters and the fun enough Hard to Handle, that makes me shake my money maker.
This was fine. Considering it was 1990 it felt a bit outdated for the time. Most moving on to grunge this stuck on classic rock. Some good tunes. New to me.
This was an alright album but definitely not one that I'll revisit. I was sort of surprised that this album was released in 1990 as it's drenched in many of the hard-rock tropes that were seen in the late 70s, some that I'm not really a fan of. The playing is good, yeah, but it didn't stop most songs from boring me due to how boilerplate and unmemorable they feel. I know this is only a first-listen thing, but the flows of these songs just sound so mundane and run-of-the-mill. Ironically enough, the slower jams like "Jealous Again" and especially "Seeing Things" were my favorites here. The latter of which is an organ-driven and heart-wrenching ballad with some of the better writing. "She Talks to Angels" is another slower track about a heroin-addicted girl and one of the more insightful tracks here. I think lead vocalist and writer Chris Robinson's ability to paint a sympathetic image of the protagonist here goes over very well. This is my favorite song here. The tracks that grooved harder had some powerful and noisy moments (like the short solos on "Struttin' Blues") but as entire songs, none worked for me. Doesn't help that I'm not a fan of the vocals on these types of songs to being with. They're certainly a talented band and I almost feel bad acting so dismissive after just one listen, but this sound is just not for me.
Ekkert spes.
What a boring album. This felt like the most bread and butter rock I've ever heard, but I didn't find any hook or anything interesting with it. Don't remember a single song either. It also felt somehow like they tried to imitate some other artist, but I can't put my finger on what artist that would be. Very low 2 star.
Very generic blues rock. Like a blander version of rolling stones combined with aeorosmith. The most popular tracks seems to be the "Otis Redding cover" of hard to Handle which i didn't really enjoy. Towards the end i found that "Struttin' blues" stood out as one of the better songs. Still bland and generic rock.
i literally can't with this why am i at a restaurant with my dad and his friends
Je me suis ennuyée... Reste le pub et les pintes fraîches pour donner du corps à tout ça !
So not my thing. Very man motorcycle meh-ness
Diving into The Black Crowes' "Shake Your Money Maker," I was immediately struck by vocals. The lead singer grabs your attention from the get-go. The album undeniably rocks, and the band's energy is evident. However, I found myself craving more variation in the musical storytelling. The tracks have a tendency to unveil themselves early on, with the intensity dialed up from the start and maintained throughout, leaving little room for surprise within the songs. This relentless intensity quickly becomes predictable and ultimately makes "Shake Your Money Maker" feel one-dimensional. For me, the true magic in music comes from the journey it takes you on, the anticipation of a crescendo, and the satisfaction of dynamic shifts that play out like a story. I long for those moments of build-up, where each song has its own unique ebb and flow, inviting me to listen again and again, making each listen a discovery of something new, leading to a deeper, more emotionally rewarding experience. Favourite Tracks: Hard To Handle
They’ve always been a wannabe Rolling Stones/Lynyrd Skynyrd type band. Like an old traveling bar band. While the music is well played and the record is well produced, I still don’t like this. It’s the whole calculated retro sound-a-like cash grab that is off-putting. It’s nouveau drinking music for mid-western white guys. Feels mind-numbing and ultimately, soulless.
I can definitely tell how this album probably had a big impact when it first came out, especially based off of what was currently popular at the time. I just will never be a fan of this band. All through my childhood this band was always playing in the background, and it was annoying then, and it’s still annoying. This is one album I would like to just keep it buried in the past.
did not love it
Kyllä meikä ennemmin laittaa Guitar Slingersin Hard to Handle -coverin soimaan kuin tämän.
I just kept thinking I was listening to Faces / Rod Stewart.
This genre is so opposite to me. This was better than Drive by truckers so I'll give em that. Will I listen to again: 0%
Mmmm meh?
If there was an award for "album with the title that least fits the sound of the album," it would go to this. You give me an album called "Shake Your Money Maker" and I'm expecting some off-the-wall dance music, not southern blues rock. Anyways, this album is fine, I guess. I have some problems. The sound itself is okay. There's definitely talent, I will admit. The singing is alright. I'd even call it good. The writing is okay. However, there is an overarching problem that I have with this album. It feels unoriginal. This album was made in 1990, yet it feels like it's trying too hard to sound like something from the 70s. I'm not saying that every song has to feel like it came out in the year that it came out. Some songs can fit an older style, while others can be ahead of their time. However, while I could potentially respect an album that serves as an homage to 70s rock, it feels like this album uses that less as a source of inspiration and more as a crutch that this album is bound to. Overall, while I can say that the contents of this album are objectively not bad, I just don't really care about it personally. 2/5.
Bar-rokk stendur í einum dómi hér á síðunni, tek undir það. Barrokk er æði, bar-rokk er býsna boring. Eitt og eitt lag á milli getur runnið í gegn á þess að maður taki eftir því, en heil plata? Af hverju varð þetta band frægt segiði?
Positively meh for me. 2/5
Was OK to listen to, but nothing special.
That's close to perfect music when you don't intend to listen to music. So you'll also forget it as fast as the last tune ends. Also without checking the info on the album I would have bet that it was from the 70s (even the cover is misleading), and it really sounds like they did no effort to update this sound and make it more "modern" somehow (there's a good load of revivals where the sound from an era is used as an inspiration but with a modern twist). It would probably have more value if really from the 70s. It's not bad per se, but should it be among the 1001 albums I should listen before I die? Not sure.
It's very standard. I'm not really into it.
Another extremely mid rock-album, really nothing more to say
Except for the one song that became a hit this was mostly a waste of my time. 2/5
Not *bad*, but didn't really do anything for me
Wasn’t super impressed with this, everything just kinda blended into one.
It's ok so far. Something about the singer's voice annoys me. Feels uninspired, like recycled classic rock. Not much I really enjoyed here.
Nothing special to hear in my opinion… this is very overrated.
Not my sort of thing
Solid rock, yes, but not a single song stands out. Not an album to listen to again.
No interesting lyrical content and no variety song-to-song makes for a boring experience.
This album lost my attention twice
Nah fuck that
Probably the most generic album I've had on this list so far. Timeless, but I don't use that as a compliment, rather it just doesn't like anything in particular
Can't really countenance this for all the contrivance and cynicism and stupidity that came at a time when the world needed less of all of the above. Sure, Rick Rubin is primarily to blame. The reason they had initial commercial success is that they were created and packaged from a commercial entity from day one (again, Rubin), selling mediocre music to mostly nostalgic folk who didn't want to think too hard. Not like we needed teh Black Crowes to prove the rule that no onee ever went broke underestimating the tastes of the American masses and the corollary that in the culture/arts game get rich pandering to those very bland tastes. "She Speaks Backward" by Mr. Crowe's Garden was, in one's humble opinion, the Bros. Robinson's highest musical achievement. Otherwise, these cats were only marginally better than rednecky ATL bands (looking at you Georgia Satellites) that were threatened by REM, Pylon, Love Tractor and other vastly more sophisticated and cooler bands from Athens. The raggedness and raffishness and nonchalance seem entirely calculated, as if they're play-acting, which one is convinced they were. From the cover shot and hair styles to the guitar riffs to the song titles, it's all second-rate Stones; however, fair-mindedness compels one to point that, in terms of second-rate knock-off Stones acts, these guys aren't strictly the worst. Also: editors once again show their blind spot re Southern music; this band has only passing resemblance to ABB and a fraction – like an nano-iota – of their talent.
43 minutes of American rock cliches lol
Heard a bunch of the songs but not my cup of tea. 2/5
volim rock, ali album mi je teski mid, nijedna pjesma nije wow
Sounds like a cross between a Rolling Stones b sides album and an ACDC b sides album. Ok, but all a bit bland and generic. Last track was pretty good.
alright
Oldies bar music 🤷🏻♀️ sorry
ваще тотально не моё
not my thing.
My first album on this journey. Hoping for something I liked to kick it off. Got this instead. Blah. The Black Crowes were popular in my late teens and early 20s. Plus, I had just moved to Atlanta when they hit it big - so they were everywhere all the time. Besides a couple of good tunes, I am not a fan. Never have been. As for the album, 2 out of 5. I am not a fan of honky tonk in my rock and roll, and that is all this album is... music you would hear from a band on stage behind some chicken wire at the Double Deuce. "Twice as Hard" and "Jealous Again" - songs I have heard a million times. I can see the draw - especially at the time (early 90s), but both songs grate on my nerves... just not as much as they did 30 years ago. "Sister Luck" - an actual song I could re-listen to. This song is one that I remember liking back in the day, because it wasn't crammed down your ear canals 3 times an hour by friends or on the radio. Listening to it reminds me of my early days after I moved to Atlanta. Good times. "Could I've Ever Been So Blind" - similar sound to other tracks "Seeing Things" is a shameless rip-off of Joe Cocker's version of "With a Little Help From My Friends" but cleaner and more hi-fidelity. Reminds me of the "Wonder Years". Cocker did it better. "Hard to Handle" - thirty years later I still have heard this song about 1000 times too many. Fine song I'm sure, but I am still sick of it. "Thick N' Thin" - ugh, good thing this song is less than 3 minutes long. "She Talks to Angels" - for me, this and "Hard to Handle" (among others) suffer because I was in Atlanta when the band hit it big - so you simply could not escape their music. You just couldn't. This made it difficult to like the Crowes after a very short while. Same with Drivin' n' Cryin' - GEEZ I hope "Fly Me Courageous" isn't on this list! "Struttin Blues" - whoa boy, we get it - your head is spinnin' round! WE GET IT. I'm really fighting the urge to give up on this album now and skip the last song. But I didn't! "Stare it Cold" - sounds like the rest of the deep tracks. But at this point, I am tired of the voice, the twangy guitars. Couldn't finish the last song. Pretty proud of myself for getting this far.
2 - not for me
Run of the mill rock album nothing too special
they uhhh played some rock music fr
I'm sure in 1990 this sounded interesting and original
Ódýr útgáfa af Lynyrd Skynyrd
It was ok. Wouldn't listen again though.
Wasn't into it.
On reflection, this bored the fuck out of me. Best song is a cover. The black slows.
Fly away from me
Was alright, my fav song on it She Talks to Angels
Next time someone asks you what dad rock is, play them this album. The music is fine if a little boring. No risks were taken here and the radio friendly production makes that stand out.
Pretty sure I've heard some of these playing at various Kohls stores
This album appears to be the result of a BuzzFeed article titled "we asked AI to make an 44 minute album of family friendly radio rock. This is what happend." To say this album is 10 years out of date is a compliment. I've had to double check the 2* ratings I've given because I'm not convinced this album deserves that high of a rating. This album is entirely inconsequential for anyone who wasn't bullied in high school for liking rock.
Yeah besides it's raining, right!
Dull blues rock. I like their version of Hard to Handle, so it wasn't a complete washout, but I was largely bored listening to this.
I do like their cover of Hard to Handle. The rest is middle of the road blues hard rock. 2.5
Was enjoying it up until the godawful cover of hard to handle. From a potential 4 to a 2 right there. Slick but so derivative
Not aged well
I was falling asleep on the firsdt half of the album and then it really picked up. It's hard to rate this album fairly because there's two such differents sides to it: boring soft rock that makes you want to fall asleep or quite honestly just turn it off as fast as possible and the later part which is quite fun and entertaining and groovy. Hard to rate this one.
Seems like half of this album got radio play and there are definitely a number of hits sprinkled in. I seem to remember that this album like a bit of a fresh throwback when it came out. I definitely would have been listening to this a lot when it came out. A two may be unfair, but it doesn’t seem to have aged well to me.
Generic classic rock. Far better options for this genre, not sure why this album is on the list. A couple catchy songs
Below average
Sounds like a rock coverband on a local festival
Mostly boring boomer rock. Guns N’ Roses but one guy loves slide guitar
Yikes
Maybe I'm missing the point with this kind of music, but isn't it supposed to be fun and exciting? Like The Faces and The Rolling Stones. This is mostly a joyless trudge, except for the excellent piano work provided by session musician Chuck Leavell (formerly of The Allman Brothers, keyboardist on Rolling Stones studio albums). I watched the video for Hard to Handle, and the lead singer is a cool dude, he looks a lot of fun. None of that came across listening to the album.
Generic boring rock. it's not bad, but it's so boring which is possibly even worse. One stand out is "hard to handle" and that's a cover. scrapes a 2 just.
Find blues rock a bit dull. Don't think this really added anything to mankind. Could have been written in the 60s, 70s or 80s. 2.5*
Eh, I guess it's fine if this floats your boat. The entire time I just felt like I've heard all of these songs before, performed better by better bands. Even "She Talks to Angels" just came off as a "Wild Horses" tribute. It all comes off like these guys put on the costume of "Blues Rock Band", kind of like an early Greta Van Fleet.
Things I dislike: hard rock, blues rock, southern rock, bad vocals. How I would describe this album: see above list.
I found this one quite boring to be frank. In general I’m a big fan of rock and hard rock but this was pretty dull and repeated Saved tracks: Twice As Hard, She Talks To Angels
Not super bad but not super interesting.
Got a few early 90s classics on here, but it just doesn’t do a lot for me. Feels like a coked-up John Mellencamp album. I don’t care for John Mellencamp.
Meh, never really got into this, loads of my friends compelled me to listen to it, over and over and hard to handle was always on the jukebox. But it just never really clicked. I think it's his voice, I struggle to warm to it. Wouldn't turn it off if it was on the radio, also wouldn't buy it.
Eh. It's okay. I can see why it's not really widely played these days unlike the albums it takes such heavy influence. It's forgettable and doesn't stand up to its contemporaries. It just feels the whole time like they wish they were lynyrd skynyrd or CCR, and that makes me wish I was listening to those artists instead.
I really wanted to give this a 1 because I generally HATE this style of rock and I'm so tired of "Hard To Handle", a song that simply will not die. Also, when I was a kid my mom privately sold a car and had to repo it when the buyer stopped payments. I was along when we got it back and this album was in the cassette player, so I always associate it with deadbeat weirdos (they were , trust me) In spite of all that it's somehow not a 1. It's a 2 and I hate to say that. At least my suffering wasn't too great.
Pretty uninspiring really
Started to fall asleep in the middle of the first song. Ugh. Repetitive and nothing noteworthy! Rock isn't just good because it's rock. Give me something to write home about, please.
The perfect accompaniment to a laminated menu.
At times it is enjoyable, but it is a forgettable project on the whole. There are small elements of brilliance here, but I cannot see myself revisiting this again. There are simply better records in this genre, of which possess more character.
⭐ Hard To Handle
Fairly generic rock
Music is fine but I just found the singers voice kinda whiny and grating. 2 stars
Making 1990 sound like 1970. This is southern blues rock done very well - competent vocals, talented guitar, stable rhythm section, but southern blues rock is about as bland and safe as music can get and there's nothing to distinguish this from a million other bar bands. The hit song was a cover of an Otis Redding hit that doesn't really extend it at all (and lacks the vocal nuances that Otis adds). She Talks to Angels is the only song that varies from the pattern. This album lacks imagination. Black Crowes played at a festival I was at last year. I didn't see much of them, Kurt Vile was on a different stage and was far more my style.
ну ничего экстра
My sister loves them... for me it's a meh!
Good Rock
Three tired radio rock singles are the best this has to offer. Why is this here?
Bland in most parts with a couple of standouts, but really not much ever bringing me back. Just seems like R O C K with little spice.
that one that all the covers bands do is good even though i've heard it a million times. the rest of this was so piss poor. like fucking turd. its like they went on wikipedia and read the description for what blues rock is and decided to make it from that description without having ever listened to any music. this band screams local pub gig on a saturday night. really generic shit that will get the drunk people excited while the band all think they're the epitome of cool dressing up as the rolling stones and using their best rock star moves so nigel and janet will tell their mates about the really good band they saw in the red lion.
Just another generic sounding American blues rock band that listened to a lot of Rolling Stones and Led Zep when they were growing up. Meh.
Some good songs on here, but ultimately they sound kinda like a cover band to me. I've heard waaay too many bar band covers of "Hard to Handle" to get any enjoyment out of it anymore, "She Talks to Angels" was a standout track though.
Unremarkable
Öder Blues Rock. Konnte der Band noch nie was abgewinnen.
I hadn't heard this album before and didn't really know the Black Crowes apart from this one track Hard to Handle. I'm not a big fan... Cheesy rock not done super well. Not very appealing to me apart from it being remotely funny I guess.
Me: Mom, can we have Let it Bleed? Mom: We have Let it Bleed at home. Let it Bleed at home:
Hat nix auf dieser Liste zu suchen.
Sound a bit like aerosmith sometimes but without the fun 80s hair metal bits, and that band that do all right now (called 'free' apparently). Hard to handle is a decent song, don't really need the rest of the album. Seems like they are just repackaging the sound of older country blues rock bands.
Seems quite dated, nothing particularly sticks out. One star feels harsh, I can appreciate that it was well received at the time.
Yeehaw. Very American Didn't mind it but if started grating on me by the end.
Not bad at all, just very uninteresting
Yeah total butt rock, not for me!
Off brand, basic blues rock It's pleasant and fun but it’s not very original or interesting in any way; I don't think this deserves to be on the list
A lesson in musical education and cos-playing. I loved 'Hard to Handle' when this album was realised - 1992? 1991?. Because I come from a household where musical tastes were as uncoordinated (and as limited, in their own way) as Jim Reeves, Abba, Millie Jackson and Boney M (and yes, I know I could describe this as "eclectic". But that would be a lie, a lie crying out to heaven for vengeance) ...I had no cause to consider this as anything other than an original composition. Boy, Otis knocked me for six. (The story of how I came to hear the Otis Redding version is pretty revealing in its own way. Everyone knows "(Sitting on) the Dock of the Bay". I knew pretty much nothing else about Otis, or indeed about 60s soul beyond Aretha and Motown. One day, saw somewhere that Bryan Ferry named his first born after the singer. I've never liked Roxy Music very much, but Eno has always intrigued me. So, even though I hadn't listened to anything by RM other than Virginia Plain, on the basis of a deep and conflicted investment in Mr E, I decided to figure out what it was about Redding. In other words, I took the scenic route to the Truth.
I’m a little confused on why this album is ok this list. There was a lot of innovative music at this time and this is fairly basic blues rock. It’s essentially revitalizing a genre without adding anything new to the conversation. The music is pleasant enough, but given its context, just doesn’t seem that important.
2.5
Quite dull, run-of-the-mill soft rock album. Moves along at a normal pace, finishes at na appropriate time. Nothing unexpected. All filler no thriller. It has a steady rhythm, so good to walk to (as I was doing) but only if you're intending to think about something else.
Some dad rock shit
The hits were good. The rest were filler and sounded like one song. It wasn't revolutionary. It sounded like a couple of bands from the 70's smashed together.
Mediocre american rock, boring but good production and no "bad" stuff.
Better than I remember. I guess because I’m not hearing it on the radio every other song.
Halfway through I started to wish I was listening to Exile on Main St instead.
It's ok but not a genre that's exciting to me anymore :/
I recognized the hits, although I don't love them. The rest of the album is pretty generic.
Not a big fan of the sound. Can’t place why exactly. But it’s not entirely fitting. I appreciate the quality of the songs and the instrumentals and vocals. But I am having a difficult time adjusting to the album if that makes sense. It sounds very generic, even for 1990. There’s nothing special about it.
Although it contains their biggest hits, it's not my fav (that's Amorica). This album is rooted in blue/rock n' roll fusion that I'm not a particular fan of. When they do fuse, I like it better in Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith – and I still don't really like it in those cases. Singer sounds like the singer of Buck Cherry, which doesn't help their case either.
Fun sound, heavy hair rock. Not quite my cup of tea
Fine but not interesting at all. Hard to handle has real words in it? Wild
Meh
Very 90s. A bit too upbeat and fastpaced. Could not enjoy.
It's as if the Stones did a third disc of Exile On Main Street, like the Clash did with Sandinista. The one with all the songs you don't want to listen to on it.
I'm not sure why you wouldn't just listen to the Stones?
According to their Spotify bio these guys 'resuscitated rock'. I get it - every few years rock'n'roll goes out of fashion, then a back-to-basics, 70s-style rock band comes along and gets very popular. But ultimately they weren't the best at making this kind of music, and they certainly weren't the first. So, 30 years on, this album seems fairly unremarkable. Decent American bar background music is all.
p639. 1990. 2 stars Adequate pub-rock band tries to be Rod Stewart and the Faces, only without the talent or songs. It says a lot when the most successful song is a cover. This is just average - why is this album on the list?
Now I know why Hinder sucks
I didn't hate this album, but it got a bit tedious as it wore on - a bit whiny power rock. Don't need to re-listen.
boomer rock, couldn't finish
Pretty average really. Middle of the road rock soon to be included on every ‘driving’ compilation
Not bad, just very dull. Why is this generic unasked blues rock album from the 90s even on this list?
This was so meh I almost died. There's nothing about this that is engaging, except "Hard to Handle" has a bit of nostalgia. It works better as a single than in the context of the album though. I was so bored listening to this... 2/5
Absolute yawn-fest. It's not badly performed or written by any means but is devoid of any energy and generic as all hell.
Very much a throwback to 70s pop rock. Hard to Handle is probably overplayed a bit, but I do like it Struttin' Blues absolutely rocks Overall, I don't really love this, but it does have a couple good tracks.
Blues rock made in the time of grunge. Honestly, I didn't like it. I think it felt like a cleaner, less gritty version of what they were going for. Like a PG-13 Rolling Stones or something. It doesn't seem remarkable for any reason. I understand what they were trying to do, I just didn't enjoy it.
80s tribute act to the 70s. Yawn...
Hated this a little less than I expected too given these tracks were plastered all over rock radio throughout my childhood. There are some genuinely good riffs and melodic ideas here, they’re just buried under either track lengths that are way too long or vocals that grate to the extreme
Barely listened. Shit to do. Didn't catch our attention.
Had some good songs (Hard to Handle, She Talks to Angels) but most of the album felt kinda repetitive and not that nice on the ear. 4.5/10
Tråk!!!!! Vad gör detta 0 testosteron rolling stones på listan...
A fine album. The singles are all fun songs. Just not really my thing for the most part.
I think not. Dette er nok musikk for white-trash menn i 50 årene som har flippskjegg eller smultring, farlig høy BMI, hvit t-skjorte med matflekker og som kjører pick-up eller lastebil. Sorry mac - ikke min cup med tea.
Throw it in the butt rock pile next to Jane's Addiction.
I mean the music isn't bad, but this kind of late 80s/early 90s alternative doesn't usually do much for me.
Vagamente meglio degli aereosmith, ma siam in quella zona, che voglio dire CHE PALLE.
2 and a half
Nope. Blues country rock that sounds like it should be buried alive in 1992
Not the worst thing I've ever heard, it just fades into the background. Despite that, I couldn't not notice how generic it sounds, which does make me drop my rating a bit.
Best Song: She Talks To Angels. I know it's more than a bit overwrought, but it gives me nostalgia for this specific period in my childhood wherein this song was so perfectly melodramatic that I would listen to it and imagine singing this song as a eulogy for a friend taken by drug addiction, despite my not being able to sing and not knowing anyone with a drug problem. Nevertheless, there wasn't a dry eye at that imaginary funeral. Worst Song: Sister Luck. Too slow with too much forced sincerity. Overall: If ever there was an album that felt like it was explicitly written for radio, it's this one. Entirely safe rock, where the basis of each song seems to be the nature of the (oft-repeated) vocal hook. I like the vocalist's style, but don't like how often he over-sings.
2.5
I don’t dislike it in a vacuum, but it has so much of that Greta Van Fleet feel of not being able to come up with a single unique idea and thus falling flat in an attempt at cheap imitation. 4/10
Listening to these guys is 2022, they sound dated as hell. Like a last gasp of that southern rock sound. Hard To Handle is a hit but belongs back in the stone age. My issue is that this band's sound is so derivitive that its goes beyond homage. She Talks To Angels is the same spirit that this album needed more of. Alas, its more of the same after.
don't care
Classic rock. Not 4 me
Feels like southern rock with some edgy guitar.
this shit fuckin sucks but it does remind me of being like ten years old and considering what the last like 8 years of my life have been that's an alright place to revisit
Good name for a band but only that.
Blues rock n roll in the style of a Rolling Stones tribute band
It's OK. Nothing stands out. It's just there
This is the music bradley cooper plays in A Star is Born
This album sounds like it was composed to appeal to women who wear cowboy hats and jeans with embroidery on the ass. It sounds like the music they play during barrel riding montages on the show Yellowstone. The production value was good, sometimes it was catchy, they seem like musicians, the singer has a good scratch/voice crack thing going, but it’s just not for me. Maybe it bears too much responsibility for modern country. I can tell you that it was one of the albums I’ve least looked forward to listening to on this list.
average
meh
Second half picked up a bit, but try as I might I struggle to find much positive in this kind of music. Middle of the road old american rock
Like a lot of American rock music, I find this a rather uninteresting take on bland noise
Rock chord progressions with country flair, sums up the debut of The Black Crows. There are hints of blues and early rockabilly vibes with “Thick N Thin”, but most of the record carries 80s power glam with vocal backup and chord rock structure. The first song to catch my interest was “Sister Luck”, the vocals were cleaner with less grit, smooth piano leads and lends itself favor to the 90s rock ballads. Songs that stand out are the smoother jams such as, “Seeing Things” with its organ fills and blues licks. This album sets the tone for alternative bands in the 90s with a gruff male singer but still carries the left over residue of the 80s jam and glam. Overall: After years of many records like this, the debut gets lost in the shuffle. 2/5
Inte min kopp av te, gubben rock.
Too loud
One good song. The rest was meandering forgetful average rock songs.
Everything other than "Hard to Handle" just sounds like the most generic music ever. It's kind of impressive. I couldn't imagine wanting to listen to again or share this album with friends.
Not really my sort of thing, and this felt old-fashioned when it was *released*, let alone 30 years later. Not bad, just not a great album.
A reasonably good bar band who's outsized success is a testament to the power of formulaic bullshit when it comes to opening the wallets of people with little understanding of authentic rock and roll.
"hard" rock, "bluesy" kind of, vaguely 80s - 90s vocals, super generic sounding. This is the music that would play in a deserted franchised bar in a dying strip mall.
It was decent. Not really my cup of tea. Most of the songs sounded the same to me. Favorite track: Sister luck
Not really that into it, but not bad.
I don't like american rock that much
There have certainly been things so far in this that I've disliked intensely but this is the first inclusion I just found quizzical. It was easy enough to listen to but I just don't think it's near the same level as it's peers on this list.
One great song really shouldn't be enough to push this album to make this list. Hard to Handle is a great song, but the rest is just ok.
meh
2.7
it's not bad, but not something i'll return to probably, nice in the mood for some toe tappin rock i guess.
Rock n Roll, rebelsk, tung guitar
Connor: I wasn't a huge fan. The riffs weren't exceptional, which is what this kind of guitar-driven rock seems to rely on, and the whole album sounds like it could've been made 10-20 years earlier - in which case it might have been more unique
The Crowes have a clear picture of the style niche they want to fill, and the playing to do it well. Unfortunately, the record falls hard into overproduction (at least to my entirely untrained ear) and the arrangements are unbearably radio-ready, especially where solos fit in or fade out. That sheen makes the LP grate a touch too much, though the songs here would sound perfect in the background of, say, a small-town rodeo.
As beige as a peeled potato! This is generic American rock music to the n’th degree.
I call this hack rock! There has never been a band in the history of music that has borrowed so much from everyone that came before. I have never liked The Black Crowes!
Ok
Why do 20-somethings make music like that? We already have records of that era of music. Of course, this is high-power stuff, great playin and everything - but it is boring!!
may God have mercy on anyone who enjoys Southern rock
Not my style.
A photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy of the blues. An homage to an homage of an homage of the original music. Sounded dated the day it came out and sounds even worse now. I never want to hear this sub-Stones dreck ever again.
Another rock band . Not in the mood
Butt rock blandness
Absolutely honking cheesy butt rock, just a shit sounding lame Rolling Stones. This feels like the cast of How i Met your Mother's favourute band. Truly lame advert rock.
O, spet en album, katerega se lotim brez predznanja! (Horrible naslov?!) Moj first impression je: še en unimpressive, forgettable rock band ("Twice As Hard"). Ugh, naslednji komad jim tud ne dela uslug ("Jealous Again"). Ful je vajb, k da si glihkar vstopil v random dive bar sred Amerike nek in lokaln band sred dneva igra svoje shitty komade. Tud posnet se mi zdi, da ni najboljš - produkcija? Omg, glih sm vidla, da me čaka cover "Hard to Handle", napisano by none other k Otis Redding! How dare they, with their mediocrity. Fak no, ker safr. Kr traja in traja, čeprav ma komad manj k 4 minute. Oh god, balada ("Seeing Things"). O, ja. It's horrible ("Hard to Handle"). Pač, k ko shitty lokaln band coverje špila, ker nimajo dost svojega materiala. O, super, zvok prometne nesreče za začetek komada ("Thick N'Thin"). Hočem ven iz tega dive bara.
More ultra-masculine generic blues rock. The lyrics are dreadful and the music is unimaginative and dull. I hate this. Please random generator give me an album by a woman artist tomorrow.
ну прикольно но хз
Nebyť Hard to handle, ani by som o nich nezakopol. Tá jedna pieseň je top, samej o sebe by som dal 5, aj keď je len prevzatá. Ostatné piesne nestoja za veľa.
didnt get through this, just not for me
oops i mixed up my the the rating with black crowes. also meh
I knew more of these songs than I realized. As a kid, I remember watching the video for Hard to Handle on MTV all the time. I think I was just mesmerized by the nonsense of the lyrics.
