Great album. It often feels like Jack White is on a mission to save rock n roll.

a talented person

Really good rock album and fun to listen to

3.5 rounded up. Favorite track: I Guess I Should Go to Sleep.

Jack White is a national treasure.

I liked a lot of the songs but not a lot of lyrics made sense I feel. Still liked it

What a brilliant album! White goes in so many different musical styles and he inhabits them all so effectively. I especially enjoy Little Willie John's "I'm Shakin'".

White stripesin soundeja ja Jack white. Tämä on tuttu levy ja tykkään.

⭐︎4.3 かなりいい。数曲掘り出し物があった。 シンプルな楽器を多用。 レッドツェッペリンの影響が多く見られた。

Eigenlijk best wel een vibe. Het klinkt heel raar maar ook wel leuk

this is really solid. I dont think there are any skips. It has a very different style, but it is very jack white

Interesting listening

I like the White Stripes, and getting into Jack’s solo stuff, I think it’s just as good, and distinct. He’s a divisive and eccentric guy and I think his music’s rather aloof but that’s also helped it age better than the glut of blues-punk stuff that we heard on the radio back in the 2010s. Like, remember that shitty Black Keys song (also 2012) that was in every commercial and TV show? (Remember Rob Schneider’s daughter’s music?) Jack White is kinda weird and pretentious but I’ll take that any day over some beardy millennial wannabe lumberjack.

I just like Jack White! He's the only person I trust to make music that sounds like this. This is my first time listening to this album. It feels like it'd be a good listen anytime, and sublime in the right environment.

Splendid

This was really good. Cool guitar solos that are unique but without being too weird, and a real thumping rhythm from the drummer which makes the whole thing make you want to move. I'm not crazy about Jack's voice, but it did grow on me over the album

Now THIS is my thing.

Oke eerste nummer, instrumentaal top. 4 reten. FAV Hip (Poor) Boy, I Guess I should Go to Sleep

Probably Jack’s best solo album but I do prefer the White Stripes and Raconteurs. Love Interruption and Hypocritical Kiss are the highlights of a very solid album.

Jack White walks through the styles and identifies with them and also lets them identify with him. It's energizing, it's rock and it is roll too. I just think that Jack White sometimes feel to extrovert in its style. It is the equivalent to an actor who practices overacting. Less would be more. I still enjoyed it though!

Decent

Great stuff. I really liked the addition of the piano in a few of the songs.

I owe Jack White an apology. I was never into The White Stripes, so I just kind of assumed his solo work wouldn't be for me either. Turns out Blunderbuss is a solid album. The title track has this unexpected pedal steel part that really works, and from “Weep Themselves to Sleep” onward, it’s just banger after banger. The second half of the album especially surprised me — way more soulful and melodic than I expected. Definitely changed my opinion on Jack White.

Jack White is always solid. He’s got his own style and really puts out interesting stuff. Can’t not look when he’s playing .

Strong album. Will get better with multiple listens, I imagine.

This was a pretty solid album. I got a little burnt out on The White Stripes, so when I first approached Jack White’s solo work, I expected more of the same, but he really did a great job here. This album still carries his signature blues rock style, with touches of country woven throughout, but what stood out most to me was the raw production. It gives the album a warm, analog feel that really adds to the experience.

A very solid album, but it is missing that extra bite the White Stripes had. Mid 4.

ok rock. Light. Groovy. Not my style

Classic Jack White! Loved the bluegrass and country blendings with rock and funk! Gives it a novelty that is sorely missing across contemporary pop music.

Interesting. Not much outstanding, but definitely more than a background listen

Great album! I really liked Love Interruption.

It’s ok. Not as bad as I remembered. Some great tracks. Still not a patch on the first three White Stripes albums and not even as good as his latest album No Name

It seems Jack had lots of ideas coming into this album. Some them come off really well, others needed to be more refined. all the same an exciting solo debut.

Better than I expected. Enough of a difference from The White Stripes

As someone who is fond of The White Stripes, I had no idea Jack White had a solo career, and dare I say this is a long lost White Stripes album. It's a 1970s Hard Rock album that was transported to the year 2012, and it will rock your socks off. Favorite Track: "Take Me With You When I Go".

I’ve never listened to this album. The first track opening not what I expected at all. And then it’s gifts to what I expect from Jack white. I’m digging this already. This album is such an amazing blend between old time classic sounds and modern sounds. What does it is the songs are solid. It’s modern production without making it sound like it is fixed in a time. Classic riffs and vocal harmony. I love this album. Great album!!

I know of the White Stripes and like Seven Nation Army but never felt inspired to buy anything of theirs, so you can imagine my ennui when faced with this BUT I loved it. Really different but with beautiful melodies. I normally compare musical acts to others but couldn't for the life of me think of who this reminded me of, which is also a bonus! An unexpected 4*

drei bis vier

I liked it! Giving blues rock/country/soul. more rock than i would typically go but thoroughly enjoyed, and full tea writing this review after only listening to a few songs

Really good! I liked the piano throughout. Was hoping for more eccentricity like some of his later stuff. I really liked Sixteen Saltiness and Love Interruption.

I wouldn’t say Jack was breaking any new ground here but it’s enjoyable listen.

8/10 One of the positives of this has been finding out how much I enjoy the various works of Jack White. This is good, a fun genre hop around rock, blues, country. Love the frequent use of almost classical piano, adds a bit of drama. White clearly respects the songwriting of McCartney. Best: Weep Themselves to Sleep

After the prolonged dissolution of The White Stripes, Jack White didn't take long to search for new ventures, namely one under his own name. Blunderbuss comes out blazing, never ceasing its rollicking, modernized blues stomp and stroll until the end. Jack's gift for memorable riffing and cadence continue to permeate here, lending itself to earworms that one wouldn't wish to forget. Never has turning a new leaf while staying consistently true to one's sound look effortless. Favorites: Missing Pieces, Sixteen Saltines, Freedom at 21, Blunderbuss, Weep Themselves to Sleep, I'm Shaking, Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy, I Guess I Should Go to Sleep, Take Me With You When You Go.

Like the diversity. Need to come back to this one.

Better than I was anticipating, would consider revisiting!

In a word, delightful. Everything about this album was delightful. From the dynamic vocal performances, provocative lyrics (particularly on songs like "Blunderbuss" and "Weep Themselves To Sleep"), Blunderbuss sees Jack White prove why he's such a legend. I could see this becoming one of my personal favorite albums ever as I spend more time with it.

Surprisingly great. Super consistent and very enjoyable.

Loved it.

this was quite a good album as well.

Never listened to Jack White solo before, just his stuff with the White Stripes. Early on, I'm very into this sound especially on Sixteen Saltines. Blunderbuss is just a really cool song. I thought the 2nd half of the album had some more unique sounding songs, but I was into it all the way through. Probably not enough to give it a 5, but a very strong 4 here. I need to come back for repeated listens.

This has been my favorite work from Jack White/White Stripes so far. Definitely a bit more out there with the different instruments than I was expecting.

Jack White is always surprisingly whacky on some of his songs. Such a unique style of songwriting and performing. I have never listened to a solo album by him so i am glad this came up. Just some really cool raw music

I really dig this album. Not as good as some White Stripes but showed some restrained bluesey work from Jack White. Title track is a great one with the pedal steel. Some solid blue rock. Strings were really solid on this one too.

suiiiiiiiii

Fairly decent album, some very jerky bluesy rock.

I'm pretty unfamiliar with Jack White's solo output, so it was cool to hear this. I've always loved The White Stripes and while this doesn't hit as high as some of those albums, this one has some great moments. Honestly, I'm usually drawn to deeper tracks with his work than the singles, so I dug the 2nd half more. Still a 4 for me!

1. Missing Pieces: great start, I love his vocals. super unique and fun lyrics, and great bassline. 8/10 2. Sixteen Saltines: AWESOME guitar intro. reminds me of guns n roses and the like. after listening to the whole thing it really reminds me of those kind of bands, fucking great song. 10/10 3. Freedom at 21: I love all of these guitar riffs. they remind me so much of classic rock riffs, and it's awesome. Fun song but pretty basic 7/10 4. Love Interruptions: acoustics now. pretty good, love the backing vocals. sounds like dolly parton. 9/10 5. Blunderbuss: another great slower track. 9/10 6. Hypocritical Kiss: not entirely sold on it bit still a pretty decent track. 7/10 7. Weep Themselves to Sleep: love the piano intro, sounds great with the drums. 8/10 8. I'm Shakin: ehhhh not super impressed. Don't like the instrumentals and don't care much for the lyrics or the sound in general 6/10 9. Trash Tongue Talker: this song feels like a better version of the last track in every way. same kind of vibe, executed way better imo. 9/10 10. Hip Eponymous Poor Boy: pretty repetitive but fun. 7.5/10? 11. I guess I should Go to Sleep: also pretty good. 8/10 12. On and On and On: really slow track but good, love the bassline. great lyrics too, 8/10 13. Take Me With You When You Go: last track. mostly instrumentals but great. goes from slow piano to upbeat guitars and drums, and then the vocals kick in. great fucking track and a great end to the album. 9/10

I like Jack White and forget how good he is. I guess I don’t love his stuff but this was a good listen. We need more rock. This is 13 years old and still among the most recent I’ve encountered

Never heard this room before. Totally unexpected love the piano.

Bellissimo mood. Non un album geniale, forse, ma veramente cool.

I mean, it (unsurprisingly) sounds like a White Stripes album, and I like the White Stripes so I am (unsurprisingly) vibing with it.

It was ok.

Great album, never thought to look into Jack White solo albums. I'll listen to it again

It doesn't have the raw magic of The White Stripes, but I still like it a lot.

Yeah, I like this, but it's not his best work. I really enjoy when he pairs up with Brendan Benson in The Raconteurs.

Really enjoyed this!

Okay. This is a great album

Sixteen Saltines is a good one, love the guitar in it. Overall I really like this album, might return to it and listen again every now and then.

Solid album

This rocks hard

Vinyl: No Fav Song: Weep Themselves to Sleep

NGL, was not excited about ANOTHER Jack White album making this list. Then I got to Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy, and I was sold. A fantastic album.

I like this album!!!

Its okay

Mix of chill and rock, bluesy w a twang piano guitar riffs n drums

Great listen. Good rock clever recording

"Sixteen Saltines" is obviously a classic with that guitar riff which is so simple but also so catchy. "Love Interruption" is awesome as well I did know Jack White's really rock side but a mor acoustic version is really nice as well. I lvoe the way he mixed rock and chill music in that album. "Weep Themselves To Sleep" wtffff was that guitar solo, kina disturbing and painful to listen to. "Trash Tongue Talker" has such a great piano part, really enjoyable. In general the album is pretty good, you can recognize the vibe coming from The White Stripes but also his own solo work with more chill vibes which awesome.

I did downgrade *Blunderbuss* this listen around. I seemed to notice the album was pretty front loaded, this listen though. The first five still friggin amaze me, but as the album progress it felt a bit more uneven than I remembered, but "I'm Shakin''' and "Take Me With You When You Go" are great highlights afterwards... Also there something almost Granny McCartney leanings I dug about "Poor Boy", but probably wouldn't count it as a highlight. (9.65) ★★★★½

Not sure this brings anything *new* that the White Stripes hasn't already done. Now, I like Jack white, his direction in The Raconteurs genuinely brought a new Jack sound, I'm not so sure this solo album does. It's good, but I don't think it's ground breaking (does all music need to be?) It feels like it's missing something but the parts that are there are pretty good, I enjoyed listening to this album. Fave Tracks: Freedom at 21 Love Interruption Take Me With You When You Go

very nice mix of hard and acoustic blues - reminds me of a zeppelin album

I don't know how to feel about this album because some songs are the perfect mix of like jazz/bluegrass and punk and rap and then other songs are not good. Like the vocals trying to good vocals aren't great but when he embraces the more rap style delivery it's successful. Highlights were the beats in most of the songs, just bops. Some excellent instrumental bits too. I think I liked it though and I'd even go as far as to say it was good overall.

Easily the best Jack White album outside of his work with White Stripes. I especially like the back half which has some more adventurous stuff.

I somehow missed this one when it came out but I really enjoyed it. Jack White radio singles all seem to sound alike to me, so I wasn't expecting so much variety in his songwriting on this one. Pleasantly surprised!

Really really good. I feel like you either like Jack or you don't but this hits for me

This feels like a continuation of the second Raconteurs album, which I love, but it doesn't hit quite the same way. I think it's the usual Jack White stuff but minus some other components that make me love his projects.

really good, a lot of different styles combined really well.

Great solo JW.

I am already in deep with Jack White so have quite a bias. Dont think I have ever listened to this album from start to finish specifically but recognise many if not all the songs. I think this is a lower 4 based on my preference. Assuming more Jack white or his collaborations come up I would expect a stronger 4 for me as he can be better than this album (he has done so many good albums across numerous bands). Great artist.

Really enjoyed this. You can call me Al probably my least favourite on it. Will definitely listen again

Sounds good, high 4

Impressed me

I liked it. Second half was better to me. Stand out track was "I Guess I Should go to Sleep"

Not a bad track on the album. I think it would be even better live

Jack White’s Blunderbuss finds the notoriously chaotic frontman dialling it back just enough to make a statement about his solo identity. Surprisingly, it works. Where his past work thrived on raw energy and reckless abandon, Blunderbuss leans into a more polished version of White’s signature blend of blues, folk, and country, maintaining a sense of adventure without the previously unhinged aggression. Tracks like "Sixteen Saltines" recall his past swagger, while "Love Interruption" reveals a more intimate, country-tinged side that hints at a deeper artistic evolution. But despite the refinement, the album feels like a calculated risk. A step toward something new, even if it lacks the unpredictable energy that made his earlier work so electrifying. While Blunderbuss doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it does establish White as a solo artist in his own right, though not without acknowledging the shadow of his past. There’s an undeniable confidence here, and even if the album isn’t as explosive as White Blood Cells or Get Behind Me Satan, it offers a more nuanced and introspective take on his artistry. Blunderbuss may not be the chaos-fueled rock ‘n’ roll explosion I was expecting, but it’s a worthwhile, adventurous pivot that proves Jack White’s still a force, just with a little less fire and a lot more precision.

I forgot I'd listened to this first time round, some good tracks on here. All very recognisable and very JB. The fact I haven't returned to it in 12 years says a lot though, mid 4.

Currently the last living rock star, an astute music historian and undeniably brilliant in every horn honkin’, ivory-tinklin’ way. This sort of omega level virtuosity could be off-putting in the wrong hands (I’m looking at you, Kravitz) and, yes, I would prefer a sloppy, spirited sibling / possible spouse(?) on the sticks to serve as a way in to those of us with cloth ears and no masters degree in chin stroking but he channels his vast wealth of knowledge and plays with enough feeling that you can’t helping getting swept up in it.

Dig it

This was excellent - 4.5.

I remember the biiig hype from one friend, who was such a big fan of Jack White. :) Good album!

Cool album

Insanely talented guitarist. Tight sound. To me there’s something missing keeping it from a 5 but it is very good.

Jack White has a very distinctive sound captured here. This is a very good effort for his first solo album but not as good as White Stripe, The Raconteurs or some of his later solo work. Still worth having in your collection.

A solid “debut” album for Jack White but I don’t think it beats the Raconteurs or most White Stripes albums of his in terms of overall quality. Sixteen Saltines, Freedom at 21, and Love Interruption are the highlights for me. Unsurprisingly these are all better live. Good mix of garage rock, Americana, and 50s blues influences throughout.

Leuk album, creatief gebruik van instrumenten en niet alleen maar de saaie rock trifactor. De teksten zijn leuk en op zn jack white, een beetje hopeloos romantisch

Jack White is a modern hero of Rock and Roll. This album is no different to the rest of his work. Travelling across, rock, blues, country and binding it all together to make solidly produced tracks. And while I recognize and acknowledge his mastery of the craft, he is still just not my favorite and I can’t put my finger on why… 4⭐️

it was alright

Simple blues done simply well. 4.5 bumped down to 4.

p good

Sounds a lot like White Stripes days. I think he has better solo albums by now but still i love the guy so what can you do

I adore this album. There was a point somewhere in history where I could play every guitar part on this album because I was just obsessively listening to it. The last few songs aren't as strong as the rest of the album which is the only thing keeping this away from a 5 for me. Great album, love Jack, hope we see him again on here.

Jack rocks

Decent if you like Jack White. If you don't like Jack White this will suck as it's very him.

-Obviously has a number of his major hits on this record -Prefer his rock/blues songs over softer material on this record; his voice feels like a better fit for this style -Guitar solos absolutely shred -"Freedom at 21" was surprisingly one of my favorites on the album; great solo -Super loose

Singles are great. Album is very good. This was way better than I remember when it first came out. He’s had even better records and this one gets overlooked, but it stands on its own. Jack white is so good at creating his own little electric blues rock fantasy world on his albums

It’s funny but I only recently started listening to Jack White’s solo work so I’m really expecting this. This is really great. Both on brand and an evolution. For somebody who only heard White on the white stripes this brand of bluesy garage rock is immediately recognizable. But here we got a different kind of song writing (and a very prominent piano!). It’s still White but sometimes feels like a western saloon. The guitar is also not as distorted and sometimes goes on more evolved solos than it used to. It’s everything good for the white stripes but a bit more ambitious and musically open. Being supported by white’s great songwriting this makes for a beautiful album. I think I’ll give it four stars.

Good album

Consistently great.

This was very good. It was versatile in style, yet still sounded like a Jack White album. I wouldn’t personally repeat this often, as It didnt really grip me with thought or emotion. But white is very talented, and it shows here.

I forgot how much I liked this and how is this 13 years old?

Pretty solid, tailed off a bit towards the end.

love the album. love the noise, the melodies, all round fun! good times!

Missing Pieces - 5/5 Sixteen Saltines - 5/5 Freedom At 21 - 4/5 Love Interruption - 5/5 Blunderbuss - 5/5 Hypocritical Kiss - 4/5 Weep Themselves To Sleep - 4/5 I'm Shakin' - 3/5 Trash Tongue Talker - 3/5 Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy - 3/5 I Guess I Should Go To Sleep - 2/5 On And On And On - 3/5 Take Me With You When You Go - 3/5 Average score: 3.7/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ overall i liked this, it was reminiscent of something he'd do in his white stripes days i think. i'm not sure where this lands rating-wise in comparison to his other white stripes/raconteurs albums, but i enjoyed the first half of the album a lot. if they trimmed a few songs off this list (particularly some of the last 5 tracks or so), this would've scored much higher

Can veer into cheesiness at times. But mostly this is an earnest rock record which rarely gets made anymore. 4/5

I didn't realize how many of these songs I knew. I was never a White Stripes/Jack White fan growing up — I always thought the music was kind of pretentious (Seven Nation Army being the exception). But this album was a banger. I've listened to it a few times since getting the initial assignment, and I think it's going to enter my regular rotation. I also discovered Little Willie John thanks to the cover of "I'm Shakin," so that was cool. 4.5/5

Some ripping guitar work, shocker. More piano than expected though, definitely a more mature JW. Listened to: at 5MW. Favorite tracks: Sixteen Saltines, I'm Shakin', Take Me With You When You Go

Jack White, The White Stripes, I can't really tell the difference. Looks like I have one more White Stripes album to catch up on so that's now 3/4 with 4 stars. Faves: Missing Pieces, Trash Tongue Talker

better than I thought it was at the time

Very solid. Especially like Sixteen Saltines, Love Interruption and his cover of I'm Shakin'.

Jack White, like Tom Waits before him, sets out to make the best dive bar band you've ever heard. Like Tom Waits, he succeeds, albeit in an entirely different type of dive bar.

Allow yourself to forget any White Stripes nostalgia for a second. And, it may be harder, but allow yourself to forget any ca. 2009 Raconteurs/Dead Weather nostalgia. This album is way better than Icky Thump, right? And probably way better than Get Behind Me Satan, right? It's a testament to Jack White's creativity across multiple projects that I frankly *don't* give this a five, but just because it doesn't immediately go for the hard blues rock stompers doesn't mean this album sucks. Au contraire: as a Jack White stan, the only reason I'm not giving this a 5 is because the ending doesn't totally live up to prior Jack White albums' endings. Unfortunately, with hindsight we can say it'll be another decade before Jack White solo gets his bearings again (I say that specifically because imo Dodge and Burn is a 5) but to this day I still deeply enjoy this album and find it a highlight of Jack's catalogue.

He can do no wrong

This album slaps. I remember listening to it when it came out and thinking it was solid, don't know why I walked away for so long. This is def going into the rotation, all over the place in such a pleasant way. Jack White is just a wild dude.

Jack White is a musical genius! That being said, this is not my favorite of his solo albums. Still a great listen and deserving of a place on the list.

Jack White - Blunderbuss Album Review Blunderbuss is a solid, occasionally brilliant record that shows Jack White stepping out of his usual garage-rock chaos and embracing a more refined, bluesy aesthetic. It’s still unmistakably him—sharp guitar work, off-kilter melodies, and that restless energy—but with a little more polish and maturity. Tracks like Sixteen Saltines and Freedom at 21 deliver the jagged, riff-heavy punch you’d expect, while Love Interruption and Hypocritical Kiss lean into softer, more soulful territory. White’s always been great at balancing the raw and the delicate, and this album proves he’s just as compelling outside The White Stripes as he was within them. That being said, Blunderbuss doesn’t completely escape White’s tendency to wander. While the mix of rock, blues, folk, and piano balladry is interesting, some tracks feel more like experiments than fully fleshed-out songs. The production is warm and organic, but at times, the album feels like it’s searching for a stronger identity. White bounces between swaggering confidence and melancholy introspection, and while that contrast is part of his charm, it can make the album feel a little scattered. Still, even at its most uneven, Blunderbuss is an enjoyable ride. It’s Jack White proving he can go beyond what people expect from him, exploring new textures without losing his signature edge. It may not be his best work, but it’s a compelling, well-crafted album.

In some ways, the White Stripes were essentially a Jack White solo project, accompanied on drums by Meg White. Listening to Blunderbuss, Jack White's debut solo album, you realize how important and integral Meg was to the White Stripes sound. When you listen to the White Stripes, there's not doubt it's the band, their somewhat unique interplay of guitar, drums and voice cannot be taken lightly, as their signature sound produced some excellent albums in the late 90's/early 2000's.. Blunderbuss, allowed Jack to step away and explore other styles, genres and musical interests. For the most part he is successful, the music moves beyond the blues-garage-rock sound of the Stripes, as the musicianship and songwriting has matured and taken on a wider focus. It's a solid record, though I still prefer the White Stripes, but this record proves that Jack White is a force, a talented songwriter and will continue to make quality music...but I would still love to see a White Stripes reunion in the near future.

After years of different bands and collaborations, "Blunderbuss" see Jack White taking full creative control for his first solo album. While his whole experience before was generating ideas with bandmates, this album saw him directing session musicians to his own songwriting and direction. The result is something far more carefully crafted and professional sounding than the White Stripes, while very clearly following the pattern of eclectic modern blues rock. What's missing is the spontaneousness of his previous work, and some of its soul. The impersonal 12 piece bands don't come across the same way as two people (in a loving yet strained relationship) just having fun in a studio. To whatever extent music can be viewed objectively, this was White's best album best album to date and a huge leap forward in his artistry. It won't capture the attention as well as the White Stripes could. But it's still a fantastic album on it's own. The run from "Sixteen Saltines" to "Freedom at 21" and "Love Interruption" is fantastic and diverse, as most Jack White projects are. This album is well worth repeated listens.

Hard not to like a Jack White project.

Fantastic!

garage indie rock's Prince, always putting something out, always pretty good

I still think Lazaretto is the better Jack White album and I’ll die on that hill. Freedom at 21 and I’m shaking still bang

On first listen, this album is good and Jacks voice is powerful. Although it still doesn’t strike me as special. I’m guessing the curator of this list just had a liking for this album lol. It’s not bad but also kind of a random choice in this guy’s discography.

i like this one the instrumentation is good i like when rock music has piano

Amazing guitar work

Not the Jack White solo album I would've picked for this list but it's still very good. The man just knows how to write a damn good rock song.

Первый сольник Джека Уайта после распада The White Stripes. Доп материалов каких-то про альбом не читал, но музыка крутая, продолжающая традиции вышеупомянутой группы.

Jack White rocks

not a bad song on here. this fucks severely. I would say that about any jack white album to be fair. “I want love to murder my own mother and Take her off to somewhere like hell or up above I want love to change my friends to enemies Change my friends to enemies and show me how it's all my fault” fuck yesssssss

You can always count on Jack White to put out some top notch tunes. Everything on here ranges between good and excellent.

bizarro switch between moods like/love: missing pieces! freedom at 21 blunderbuss hypocritical kiss take me with you when you go! okay: trash tongue talker im shakin meh: sixteen saltines hip (eponymous) poor boy - too hip

Already listened to

Jättebra. 👍

Jack White never misses

Turns out its really just his voice I don't care for. On the tracks where the backup vocalist is ass loud as he is, the songs really soar. He's an incredible song writer.

Jack White's debut solo album Allison Stewarrt of The Washington Post called the album "restless, cranky and great, although weirdly inconsequential: less a statement of artistic purpose than a stellar collection of songs"

I've heard a lot of albums like this one on this website. For some reason this one was much more pleasant than the others

I enjoyed. The variety in styles and instrumentals were really interesting. The recording and production is top notch.

The album that Jack White showed he contained more than just garage rock blues

If you were pissed off at someone, listen to this. It will fix it.

better than I thought

Jack White gives off a certain mystique you don't see in rocks stars much anymore. He's got a recognizable sound with the buzzing guitar and breaking vocals. Picked up right where White Stripes left off

Ya that's good stuff

Jack White doing what Jack White does best. Make some amazing music.

You can listen to and dance to too.

not bad, mix of genres 4/5

One of the coolest cats. Rock, folk, country, soul. Enjoyable, a morre laid-back White Stripes. Retro.

Pretty solid album with a lot of variety, didn’t expect less from one half of the white stripes. I’m not a fan of his vocals at times but the instrumentals are great.

I love Jack White 3.9/5

Each year, I try to comb through the best reviewed albums and check out ones that appeal to me. Blunderbuss was on quite a few best of 2012 lists, and I really enjoyed Jack White’s work with The Deadweather, so I decided to check it out. I remember really enjoying it, and I've been meaning to listen to it again for a really long time, so it looks like that day has finally come! Also, I just had a realization about the cover of this album: that’s a vulture on Jack's shoulder, and not him reaching his hand towards his back. Don't know how I never saw that before. Anyway, I'm really hoping that I'll enjoy Blunderbuss today as much as I remember enjoying it all those years ago! I didn’t enjoy this album as much as I remember enjoying it back when it came out, but I still thought it was really good. Jack White has such an interesting take on blues music. When I think of the blues, I think of really sparse arrangements, but Jack creates that blues feeling with such a dense atmosphere, and I think that really works for him. Jack White creates a sound that’s well layered, and full of interesting elements, but the sound never feels busy or saturated. There’s some really good use of stereophonic sound on “Freedom at 21” that I really loved. Throughout Blunderbuss, the guitar playing is really unique, and each song has its own distinct sound. I really loved the guitar work throughout “Sixteen Saltines,” especially towards the end of the song. In addition to the guitar work, there was some great Rhodes piano on “Missing Pieces,” a haunting pedal steel melody on “Blunderbuss,” and some beautiful folkier elements on “Love Interruption.” I’m not the biggest fan of Jack White’s vocals, but I really loved the background singers on “I’m Shakin’.” The background singing really added to the atmosphere of the album. The songwriting on this album wasn’t really my taste, but I thought that “Missing Pieces” was really brilliant. This album isn’t really the type of thing that I’d revisit often, but I thought it was beautiful and really well made.

Pleasantly surprised by this album. I've always found White Stripes to be hit or miss for me, but it's nice to see how creative Jack White can be in his own element. The songs that were made to be singles are fine enough, but this album really shines with its less popular tracks. Top tracks: Blunderbuss, Hypocritical Kiss, Weep Themselves to Sleep

Strong stuff 3.7

Vaihteeks oikeesti hyvä rocklevy 2010-luvulta!

good stuff. rockiish

Jack White is just so damn talented

FAVO: Missing Pieces, freedom at 21, I'm Shakin', hip poor boy,

Another album that I would gladly award five stars if I liked the sound of the singer's voice. As it is, it only gets four.

Super fun rock album! I could totally tell that Jack White is the iconic lead voice of The White Stripes even without having known his name. Great bass and guitar riffs, definitely something I would return to even just for the instrumentals. Freedom At 21 feels a little dated, almost like a 2000s Mother Mother song (not that that’s necessarily bad but White’s voice on this song in particular feels derivative), but all of the other songs feel timeless! I also love the folk rock Bob Dylan/Bon Jovi influence on the title track. YASS piano on Weep Themselves To Sleep. Oh MAN, I am just loving the decades of rock influence across this whole album. Total Elvis bluesy vibes on I’m Shakin. Favorites: Missing Pieces, Sixteen Saltines, Love Interruption, Blunderbuss, Hypocritical Kiss, Weep Themselves To Sleep, I’m Shakin’, On And On And On, and Take Me With You When You Go. Least Favorite: Freedom At 21 REALLY good album: 8.5/10 !!!

Magnificent Album, at the end my music app selected led zep as a follow on track and for a moment I didn’t notice…

I remember when this album came out I was initially disappointed in it upon listening. I was a huge White Stripes fan and this was Jack’s first solo album. To me it just didn’t have the same magic that the Stripes had, it was too polished. I haven’t listened to it since then. Until now, and I can honestly say I was wrong. This is a great album, it is a little too clean sounding but the songs are there. It’ll never beat what the White Stripes did, but I will definitely listen to this again.

A good album. Exactly what you think a Jack White album would be.

нормалек. одну песню добавил. в целом - понравилось больше чем the white stripes (скорее всего потому что я испытываю ненависть к песне "seven netion army".

Kind of a soft alternative rock with a bluesy vibe. Pretty good.

I enjoyed this album more than I expected to - I'm not a huge Jack White fan, but this was a cool listen. I added several songs to my library and would listen to this again.

Great album. I enjoy White Stripes stripped down style better but it's great to hear Jack grow. I listened to this album quite a bit a decade or so ago.

Goodrock! Jack always puts out full rffort

Varied, but weirdly nervous

I had listened to this a bit when it came out and then forgot about it, but it was great to revisit and hear Jack white being purely him.

he rocks and he's a whirlwind and there's nothing you can do about it!

Interesting... Progress: 3 stars This album is growing on me. Again, not my cup of tea but I'm finding my feet tapping in the middle of the workday. Progress: 4 stars Hip Poor Boy just won me over. In Summary, this album is a breath of fresh air from my usual pop genre.

Solid solid album. I tend prefer White's guitar-based songs over the piano-based songs here, but it's all good. The I'm Shakin' cover is awesome. White's presented a lot of tasty guitar hooks on this album. Liked Songs Added: Missing Pieces Trash Tongue Talker I'm Shakin' Take Me With You When You Go

I have always been a big Jack White fan, and I was familiar with many songs on this album. Listening to the whole album start to finish, I found myself really enjoying it. There are so many different genres that play together well- a rock album with blues roots that has a layer of pop and melodic influence. It was a big undertaking, and I think it succeeds in showing his unique musical perspective. Overall- very enjoyable album

Why have I never gotten around to Jack White? I loved White Blood Cells. I enjoyed that one Raconteurs song that sounded like Don Dixon’s “Praying Mantis” (you might not know what I’m talking about, but I’m pretty sure Jack does). Now here I am just getting around to a 12-year-old Jack White album, and I have to say it’s quite good. I don’t suppose I should be all that surprised. Jack seems to like Zeppelin for the right reasons; there’s enough rococo byzantinery to give it some flavor, and he’s integrated his influences into a pretty coherent whole.

Best nice 7.5/10

Up until 2012, Jack covered so many bases in The White Stripes, Raconteurs, and Dead Weather, and I hear a bit of all of them on Blunderbuss. As a result, this album is the sound of him trying to figure out the identity of his solo career in real time. When it hits, it hits. “On and On and On” is an unbelievably atmospheric, Beatlesque number, and still one of my favorites in his solo catalog; “Love Interruption” is a cool, smoky duet with Ruby Amanfu; “Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy” sounds like a nice country tune on the surface, but the lyrics reflecting on the Stripes’ breakup give it a venomous “How Do You Sleep?” quality; “Missing Pieces” is a solid, dynamic opener rife with excellent electric piano and guitar performances. Honestly, I’m not sure I dislike any of these songs - as a result, it’s one of the higher 3.5-star albums in my book - but overall, his search for how to move forward musically results in a diversity that is less of a White Album/Exile on Main St. (we’re so good and confident at everything we do that we’ll go in any direction we please and it will succeed) and more of a Greetings from Asbury Park (I don’t quite know what to do with all of these talents yet). I’ll get more into my thoughts on the arc of his solo career when the thread for his elimination opens up, but ultimately, I think this was a necessary album for him to make, if not a necessary album to be included in this book. 3.5/5

As someone who could never really get into the White Stripes for some reason, I actually enjoyed this more than I expected.

Following the example of the Frank Black album that I listened to the day before yesterday, I'm not a big White Stripes listener either and I had no idea that Jack White had a solo discography. Blunderbuss sounds very similar to the White Stripes style, of course this is due to Jack's iconic vocal lines and unmistakable guitars and his unique, carefree and relaxed way of playing the Blues. Very cool! It's not a perfect album but it's a very enjoyable listen! 4 stars!

Refreshing rock sounds

It was fine

Opener Missing Pieces is measured and a little proggy, which left me unprepared for Sixteen Saltines and its big riffs. More of the same sound on Freedom At 21 with a great intro riff. Very satisfying guitar tone. We lose a bit of momentum with the mostly acoustic Love Interruption, and then the title track is a moody blues rocker. There's still a proggy feel to it. I'm digging the piano that shows up here and there, especially prominent in Hypocrital Kiss and Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy. Near the end, On And On And On is a cool mellow piece. I get some neo psychedelia now. Last track brings back that buzzsaw guitar tone. This album is a trip. A pleasant surprise for someone who doesn't like The White Stripes.

Muy bueno, rockero con mucha onda. Lo escuché mientras envolvía mis regalos navideños y me hizo pasar muy buen rato.

My dad told me to listen to this when it first came out and I didn't... I miss the White Stripes

I didn’t really keep up with Jack White post-White Stripes, but that was a mistake. I love the controlled passion and the piano work on this album. Some overdone bits, to be sure, but I like the general flow and sound.

Decent enough I guess. White stripe

Not what I expected having only listened to the hits of The White Stripes. A well produced mix of genres, often relaxed and mixed with harder hitting rock/punky feeling bridges. Impressed with my first listen of the 1001 albums.

A solid album with a couple of Jack at his best not up to White Stripes standards but his solo stuff is more Bluesy and it definitely grows on you the more you listen to it. The title track and the cover of Little Willie John's Shakin are really good.

Fun album. Love the variety of songs and his willingness to explore. Hadn’t heard this in a long time. Interesting to hear the beginning transition from White Stripes to solo Jack White.

Enjoyed this more than I expected to. Better than some of his other side projects/solo work.

Liked the vibe, cool use of effects and melody

Yeah, again, not a White Stripes fan, but I don't respect Jack White's love of all things music. I just don't dig his vocals, or typically his music, but this album is alright. I probably won't listen to it again. I did like Freedom at 21. I give this a 4 for the music, which is quality on this album.

Solid and enjoyable solo debut from Jack White, continuing what he became known for in the White Stripes: blending his influences from various American genres and serving up something both familiar yet innovative, old-timey yet modern, authentically and without pretentions.

I enjoyed this one more than the White Stripes album that was on here a few days ago. Jack is all over the place stylistically but it all seems to work. Catchy hooks and interesting song arrangements and instruments. It's my first listen to this album and I'll have to check out more of his solo stuff. Nice appearance by Q Tip.

Jack White is a phenomenal artist, and the music he's given this world is just incredible. I have listened to this album a lot when it came out and was happy to rediscover it again.

Out of the ones we've seen from the 2000s onwards, easily the best album yet

Many things about this album are interesting. One; it’s almost entirely female musicians and I can kinda FEEL that. Two; I cannot explain what it is about Jack white that makes home so good other than enthusiasm and fearlessness. Wait; that’s it Three: listened once, liked it. Again, found some inspiration and really liked it. Third time, started to love it. Typical Jack White. Rounding up…..

8/10 Really unexpected. Really enjoyed these songs Favourite Song=Weep Themselves To Sleep Least Favourite Song=On And On And On

Se escucha bien, no me esperaba nada el sonido que tiene. Entretenido.

Oh, so your choice of drummer actually matters? Huh?! Who knew?

Jack White will single-handedly bring blues rock back if it kills him. His first solo effort after the dissolution of the White Stripes is stripped-down and sincere.

Its pretty good but his best

He's a good song writer isn't he? Slamming. Full blast. does not hold back. Impressive to such consistently good big music

A simple-sounding but effective songwriting style.

Good stuff. One thing that's always bugged me about some of Jack's songs is that he tries to jam too many words into his songs. But it totally works for some of his songs. Fine line, I guess?

Blues rock. Es el de The White Stripes. Un 4.

I'm Shakin'. Exmiembro de White Stripes.

Sounds just like a white stripes album, but it’s good

Oh man, this swings! Energetic and fun.

good. not my fav

This albums is good, Jack White worked better with Meg though.

Haven't listened to a ton of Jack White or the White Stripes but I really enjoyed this & might look into more from their catalogue!

Tweede Jack white denk ik? Leuk album, was al wel bekend met de man uiteraard ook via white stripes. Prima listen

I listened a lot to this when it came out, so I was happy to see it show up here. It’s still great with some amazing riffs, and it just has such a great vibe to it.

Solider Pop mit britischen Einschlag ohne absolute Highlights. „Hip” lässt ein wenig vom Jahrmarkt träumen und “Blunderbus” wirkt tiefgründig. Irgendwie möchte man es nochmal hören.

I like Jack White. I'm a huge fan of the first two Raconteurs albums. The White Stripes albums can be hit or miss, but they all have absolute bangers on them. I feel like White's first solo endeavor is a little bit of all those styles that make him the guitarist he is. And, it's a really good album with some interesting songs. But, none of them have that "wow factor" that some of the best White Stripes songs have, and none deviate from the norm like some of the more interesting Raconteurs songs do. Lastly, I'm not getting a lot of emotional depth on this album. Don't get me wrong. This is a solid 4 for me, and by my ratings, that's a very strong album. But I guess that for Jack White's first solo album (especially one that made this list), I was honestly just expecting a bit more?

There’s something encapsulating about Jack Whites music—a sort of flavorful spin on that bluesy, classic rock that you can tell Jack admires. You get some laid-back vocals and synth and guitar on the opening track, Missing Pieces. Following that is a piece that matches the White Stripes’ highs and rock staples: Sixteen Saltines. It’s a song that anyone could put on the radio and have a jam-packed van of middle-aged white dudes bobbing their heads, forgetting that it’s even from the last 15 years. Freedom At 21 has the same catchy, old-school rock nature, but with Jacks own pizzaz added (those wobbly vocals, man, what the hell). The title track is reminiscent of Led Zeppelin, emulating the slow beauty of much of Led Zeppelin IV, ie. Going to California. I’m Shakin’ brings back more of the classic, bluesy rock that started the whole genre, truly making this album a compilation of many of the things that make rock great (just wish he didn’t say “I’m noivous”). His first solo work since the White Stripes, Jack White continues the same-old style of alt-rock that made his previous duo so immediately and immensely popular. That being said, not every song is a banger, and the album holistically plays like more of a greatest hits compilation than anything cohesive and genre-pioneering. It’s clear Jack had his moment to shine in The White Stripes, and while he did change the alt-rock scene for decades to come, he’s decided to just have fun with his newer stuff. Though I’ve heard No Name is really good, and Jack White seems to be leading the charge on resuscitating rock, so have to give him his praise where necessary. Anyways, solid album.

Great album. Genre changing

I have never really listened to much Jack White, apart from the White stripes. I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Standouts: Sixteen Saltines, Love Interruption and Take Me With You When You Go.

One great song and several good ones

Very surprised to see Jack White solo stuff on here. This dude just gets rock and roll music. Interesting stuff. Cool tone on his solos. Like this dude.

Almost forgot to rate this one! Love Jack, so I enjoyed this.

Nickelback of the 70s

7/10. Had some good songs, but didn't stand out to me as 'fantastic'. Good album.

I'd previously given this less credit than due, I think.

Considering how much I like the White Stripes, it's surprising that I never really got into Jack's solo and other bands until recently. Solid album, overall. Some of his newer stuff is better, but a few of these are his solo hits.

Good stuff! He writes cool songs

good songwriter, just never quite clicks with me

The OG hipster. Pretty fun album, not always what I want, but always happy to hear it when it’s on.

I was just thinking to myself the other day that I wanted to hear some Jack White. Here we are. I think Jack is a tremendously talented artist. This album isn't groundbreaking but it's enjoyable from start to finish. 7.5/10 (3.75/5)

Not quite to the level of his work on White Stripes, but still a lot to like here.

Musical genius. Been a fan of Jack since Highschool.

Interessant. Für mich eine Neuentdeckung und besser als erwartet (befürchtet)!

I enjoy Jack white’s music.

I got elephants last week, and been listening to Jack Whites new album ‘No Name’ a lot already this week, so I feel Iv overdone Mr White before seeing this album this morning. Ignoring that it was good to hear his debut again, I really like this album. But it’s hard to rank in terms of this list, it obviously sits behind the white stripes albums, but due to personal taste it’s already in my frequent rotation,

Bouncy, energetic, and sometimes peppy. A good & fun listen.

Favorite Track: Blunderbuss

hey this was pretty great

Really liked this. Less lo-fi than The White Stripes, and hugely Led Zep in places, but still definitely a Jack White project.

i really liked this album it had a couple of really good stand alone songs and was a really good listen as a whole. i really liked the lyrics in a few of the songs that i felt subverted common tropes in music writing.

Good music but only a couple things stand out for me. The Sixteen Saltines and Weep Themselves To Sleep stood out as memorable.

First half of the album I genuinely rocked out. Second half I felt a bit schizophrenic, but I didn't hate it.

no stand out tracks

Good album

I liked this album musically. Lyrically it was hit and miss but overall, I liked where this was going! Worth another listen, one day...

surprised how much i like this...always been big on White's singles but never his full albums, with any project...but idk something in the grab bag of songs here clicked, feels relaxed and fun and unambitious in an inviting way...i dunno, maybe i'm just getting Old Enough for this shit 8/10

I think his guitar skills are underrated. He does some really amazing stuff.

Immaculate

Some really good tracks on this one that I've enjoyed for a long time. "Sixteen Saltines," "Hypocritical Kiss," and "I'm Shakin" are among my faves. Giving this album a bonus star because it's the first one generated to me that I listened to right when it came out. These were the earliest days of Spotify and I thought it was the coolest thing that I didn't have to go sailing the seven seas with me mateys to experience new music.

Solid first “solo” effort by a fantastic artist that has carved out his own niche.

I really like the music. Jack White is an excellent student. The pop structure is there. Smooth af production. He never reinvents the wheel, but he makes very nice wheels. Honestly, I love Jack White, but the music is so good, sometimes I kinda wish someone else was singing. 4/5

This is good. Like a bit more of an involved bandy white stripes with more thought to the arrangements. Some good songs too, but none that I wanted to save as a 'great' song.

What can you say? Dude knows how to create a hooky riff.

Good rock 👍

This album really surprised me, because I hate The White Stripes, and I don't like the particular bluesy, stripped-down rock White does in other places like with The Raconteurs. However, I liked this album, from the piano to the more complex melodies in many songs. It is more subdued in most songs, which I really like. There were one or two songs that got a little too Stripesy, but I generally did enjoy it. I'd probably give this a 3.5 stars, but I feel myself pulling towards 4, just because I do think I'd listen to it again, and it surprised me so much, I do have a good feeling towards it, right now.

Jack White is an interesting guy. I like him. I like this album. But it seems to fall a little short of his White Stripes work. I’ll still listen to it again a few times, but I just don’t like it as much.

Riffs, diverse, rocking

Geggjuð plata.

Fantastic. Love his melodic style. Very distinct voice and really interesting guitar tones. Even when the tones are harsh, they feel appropriate.

Great tho some of the rave ups are conceptually jack white schticky still solid and varied effort.

I like Jack. Don't think I've heard anything he's been involved with that I didn't like. I haven't listened closely to his albums tho so can't rank them. Enjoying the a lot so here's 4 stars

I wanna call this fun rock. I like that there are more instruments joining in as well.

You know with Jack White what you will be getting, and I was still pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. While it had his distinct style that has defined the White Stripes, he still fits in various styles and mixes up the sound. Genuinely enjoyed, but probably not one I'll come back to often just because White Stripes/Jack White is definitely music I need to be in the right mood for.

Not a deep or complicated album, but great fun.

3.5. was this really good it am I just a battered woman simply relenting after the abuse this list dishes out in gaslighting me on what a good album is?

I really enjoyed this album, great tunes, Jack White is really a very talented guitar player, one of the very best ;-)

Two in a row in my record collection! I'm such a fan of Jack White, he's really an incredible guitarist and songwriter. While I don't think his solo stuff ever hits quite as hard as the White Stripes, he's still got undeniable chops and a few bangers. "Love Interruption" and "I'm Shakin" especially, those are seriously great. Just another great album, I'm riding the high. Favorite tracks: I'm Shakin, Love Interruption, Missing Pieces, Freedom at 21, Sixteen Saltines, Take Me With You When You Go. Album art: He committed to this color palette on a couple albums, and I respect continuity like that. As far as portrait covers go, it's pretty solid. Is that a buzzard or a vulture on his shoulder? I don't know the difference. 4/5

This is a great album that could be mixed in with any rotation of classic rock albums while having 21st century themes. My favorite tracks from the album are Freedom at 21 and Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy. This album is definitely worth a listen. This album has gotten lost in time as just 12 years after release, I do not know anyone who remembers this album with any sort of nostalgia. It is a good album that has certainly flown under the radar. Perhaps it just was not meant for the era of social media but it is a shame this one has gone unnoticed. It is not my favorite album by any means but it is a good listen and I would gladly put some of the tracks in my current rotation of music.

Blunderbuss is the debut solo album of Jack White of The White Stripes. Compared to The White Stripes this album contains more traditional blues (rock). As one critic wrote: "an entertaining rollercoaster of a listen".
