Reviews (page 6 of 11)

I like the style, a slightly heavier alternative maybe with some blues influence. But the mood created by the vocals and the lyrics is a bit too dreary.

Excellent indie rock album. Jack White is a hook machine. Though is uniqueness does become a bit repetitive.

I'm a big White Stripes fan but strangely enough I've never gotten into Jack White's solo work or his work with other bands. I remember listening to a couple of Raconteurs albums but they didn't connect with me like the White Stripes did. However, I don't believe I've ever listened to any of his solo albums, so I'm really glad to have this album come up today. The sound of this album is more similar to the White Stripes than his Raconteurs work. Definitely will listen to this more and also his other solo work. 4 stars. Just an interesting little side note. Reading about Jack White on his Wikipedia page I learned that his first rock band experience was as the drummer for a group called Goober and the Peas. I actually saw Goober and the Peas at least a couple of times back in the day. They were pretty big in the local Detroit area music scene for a while. I had no idea until today that he was in that band.

Vet album van Jack White, maar niet per se onmisbaar in de lijst, naast The White Stripes.

Jack White’s output since the White Stripes ended has been a number of things; prolific, eccentric, inconsistent. But this album captures lightening in a bottle to some extent and finds White at a personal and professional turning point where he demonstrates so many of the talents that he uniquely possesses without Meg White at his side. He is a fantastic songwriter, band leader, and guitar virtuoso - all on display on this album. I had almost forgotten, and couldn’t believe this album is 10+ years old, that this album was this good. Part of me feels an odd comfort knowing that Jack White is out there in the musicsphere continuing to make music even if it’s just for himself to enjoy.

This is a very good, well written album. I am a huge Jack White fan, and this is one of the vinyl records in my small collection. What keeps me from thinking of this as a "great" album is simply the comparison between this and many of his other excellent records with the White Stripes, the Raconteurs and the Dead Weather. There are several albums of his that I return to before this one, even including his subsequent solo albums which continue to get better. But I do enjoy this album, and there are no duds, which is always an impressive feat for any artist.

Strong solo debut. DNA of The White Stripes here of course, but a bit more stripped down. Heard many of the hits but nice to hear the others.

Jack White always brings a certain style and swagger that just works for me, and hearing a more free expression of sound compared to White Stripes was nice (even if it did drag a tad by the end).

Good, although it lacks something that Jack nailed in the White Stripes typically.

An artist I like playing songs of a style I like should be perfect. However, it's not, and I don't know why. It's very good, but not perfect as I was expecting.

8/10. Always skeptical when this list throws me a 2010's album from an artist past their peak, but every once in a while they turn out to be pretty good.

Decent stuff, though it feels a bit behind the curve considering this came out in 2012. 7/10

I did not know this was the white stripes guy! I was super impressed with the guitar sound and the keys were amazing as well. As a piano player I definitely smiled when I heard the keys come in mostly on the second half of the album.

Rento ja tyylikäs. Oli uus levytuttavuus. 3,5 tähtee… melkein pakko ylöspäin pyöristää

he seems fun

Every Jack White album that's come up, I've enjoyed! Impressive variety that he nails each time despite the range of styles

What a weird but also surprisingly good album. There was a lot of variety which sometimes turns me off to an album but these songs all seemed to work well together.

This is a COOL album. Jack White I’ve always found to be a little odd but what a cool vibe that put a modern spin on some classic 70s rock.

Decent

listened to again it's impossible to not love jack white, i credit him and annie clark for making the guitar cool again

I vaguely remember listening to this when it came out as I didn't mind the white stripes (not my fav band but hey). But I also vaguely remember being bored. Some of it is white stripes goodness, but some of it is artsy-fartsy, indulgent nonsense. I guess I could say it's experimental - Jack White is a fucking talented guy and when he's on, he's really ON. If I ignore the meandering indulgent bits towards the end, it's a pretty damn good album. 4/5.

Like his stuff in the white stripes more but still good. Extra star for being from Michigan

This album makes me think that maybe Meg tends to rein him in a bit. Great stuff overall. Best track: Love Interruption

"Blunderbluss" is the debut solo album by American musician Jack White. The album was written, recorded and produced by Jack at Third Man Studio in Nashville. He started the songs with musicians who became available at Third Man when RZA's recording was canceled. Jack used various production styles, an all male band and an all female band and recorded different versions of the songs. The musical styles are blues rock, folk, jazz and country soul. Lyrics deal with death, loss and collapsing relationships...lots on relationships. The album was mostly well received by critics. An piano and a jazzy beat starts off "Missing Pieces." Of couse, there's guitar. Interesting lyrics as he compares loss of body parts to the give and take of a relationship. No, we did not go totally away from The White Stripes as Jack crunches those chords in "Sixteen Salines." The struggles of a former lover. Hey, there's a weird drum pattern and Jack rapping in "21 Freedom." He's got kind of a 60's melodic guitar which goes harder. The first single. "Love Interuption" has an acoustic guitar, a wurlitzer electronic piano and great backing vocals. A mid-tempo soulful song. Violent acts of love as a form of self-discipline? Jack kind of lighten things up with his cover of "Shakin.'" He goes R&B and kind of groovy. The album ends with "Take Me With You When You Go." Funky, jazzy. Overlayered rhythm and lead guitars. This is a real good album; it's been a few years since I had listen to this. Probably, the way you want to go solo after a successful band: No garage rock, a lot of songs not guitar led or at least in combo with some other instruments and variety of styles. This is my favorite of his solo albums.

Sorry Meg this is my favorite Jack white project

A slicker, beefier, and better White Stripes. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Sixteen Saltines Date listened: 09/05/23

Much better than white stripes?

Actually brilliantly enjoyable album. Not listen to any of his work before but I was on the line to giving this 5. So much variety in the songs but all them hit so well. Great voice great sound

Really good, more than just a one band wonder with White Stripes.

This album was great jack white has an awesome voice

Ik vind vooral de stukken waar de dames meezingen leuk. De rest eigenlijk ook.

Some surprisingly cool songs on here. Nice!

It's more interesting than most blues rock. It's a conundrum... Workingbwith lots of different musicians means this has a far greater sonic pallette than the White Stripes. However, it loses some of that monomaniacal drive that made the White Stripes so good. It's different, and it has both benefits and issues. It is a good album though, maybe two tracks too long

It’s good, it’s just not the White Stripes

Is it just me, or is Jack White, at his least inventive, akin to a talented & v soulful American Idol contestant? B/c as much as I adore The White Stripes, besides a few tracks here, specifically the perceptive ‘Love Interruption’ & the country-inspired title track, this solo is nothing special. I think the guy kinda depends too much on not reinventing the wheel. Not bad, but I need more. & he’s no Bo Diddley. Bo Fiddley?

Nothing exceptional. Expected more

oeee pas mal

I do not hate it. Not exactly my type of music but i would definitely listen again someday.

This album didn't have a single boring or sad song in it. This isn't exactly my type of music, but I wouldn't mind listening to this record again

Decent👍

Might need to give it a go, but didn't really move me. Lacked the power and immediateness of much of his other work.

It wasn't bad, I quite enjoyed it

Standard Jack white affair high quality rock that doesn’t blow you away

This is marginal. Theres some strong tracks but idk. Borderline 2.5

First impressions here are that this is terrible. The lyrics are terrible but at least the music saves it from being unlistenable. I think this is a record strictly for fans of the White Stripes because Jack's voice is still weird, and some of the music is good, but it's not an album you need to hear before you die. Had I not heard this I would have been fine.

Decent. A couple of nice tunes but mostly forgettable for me. An enjoyable rock/country hybrid with interesting subject matter for sure but I just don't think something that gelled with me personally. Doesn't at all degrade any other Jack White or White Stripes work, just not a favourite by any stretch.

Very good. Love interrupted deserves a place on anyone’s desert island playlist.

I liked this album. I like the bluesy feel of the some of the songs and that the styles seemed to change between tracks. It kept it feeling varied. I struggled to pick a favourite and I think that might be because there just isn’t a stand-out track for me. Very solid as an album but nothing that really stood out. Giving it a 3 because despite enjoying it on a first listen, my second listen to pick a favourite song left me a little disappointed. Fav song: Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy Least fav: Hypocritical Kiss

I really enjoyed the lyricism and the variety. Think I'd have liked it slightly more if it was sung by a different vocalist... Favourite song: Freedom at 21 Least: Love Interruption

I quite enjoyed this. It got better as the album went on. It definitely had that 2000-2010 sound with a bit of a country element at some points. It also had a bit of soul which I appreciated. Wouldn’t listen again but nice to be exposed to.

Certaines sont plutôt sympas, je connaissais pas la carrière solo du monsieur

It's a jack white album. It comes across as just about every other thing I've heard from him. Mildly interesting, but not enough to keep me hooked.

My first Jack White album. I appreciate that he wasn't afraid to get fun with the soundscape on this album. I kinda like that there's an interesting assortment of tracks. Some of them are pretty good too. But I don't think that this one is anything to write home about.

Interesting and theatrical

Pretty good! He writes great songs I just think his voice bugs me too much… 3.5

Too samey for me.

Started off a bit samey, and I found myself getting a bit irritated by Jack's vocals, which is strange cause I quite like The White Stripes...

Surprisingly good! Preferred the more bluesy back half of this album 3/5 Top tracks: Take me with you when you go, bluderbuss

Cool vulture. I thought songs were just okay.

Not Jack White's best but still very decent stuff

It's 3.5

It's alright. Not my favorite among Jack White's career, but it's decent.

I want to like Jack White and the White Stripes more than I do because on paper I should, but I never quite connect to their works. It all just comes off okay.

Contains everything you'd love about a White Stripes album. Favorite track: I'm Shakin'

Jack White’s music is a pastiche—a collage of blues, garage rock, and Americana. The songs are cool, and the thick, distorted guitar fuzz never fails. However, his work never moves me to tears, nor does it tug at the strings of my soul. Jack White is the Quentin Tarantino of rock. And my favorite moments on Blunderbuss arrive when the music goes off the rails and White leans fully into the raspy, idiosyncratic inflections of his voice. Unfortunately, that means that the album is front-heavy.

I have mixed feelings. On one hand, it is quite creative and harmonic. But the mix is often weird, probably on purpose, but I don't like it. And I often wished it would go harder in general. Like a failed orgasm. But that's rock'n'roll in general for me.

Example 5,357,540,641 of why you should never break up the damn band.

I listened to it on friday and at the time I thought it was good but now I remember nothing about it

I dimly remember when this came out. I had just gotten into running and think I listened to this for the first time on a treadmill? I think critical response in 2012 was positive? I don’t remember how I felt about it, other than vaguely warm feelings towards “Sixteen Saltines”. (After this listen, I think those warm feelings are because it was uptempo enough to actually run to; the song itself is just alright.) As always, I think White is a great guitar player who knows how to write the hell out of a riff and a weird solo. A lot of attitude and force in his singing, too. More sonic variety in the production than White Stripes had, which was almost always just Jack and Meg. The keyboards are an especially welcome addition. All of this to say that this is a perfectly respectable, pretty good solo debut. But it didn’t rock my world, and I’m not surprised that this one didn’t stick with me 14 years later.

A talented, restless album with flashes of exactly the kind of soulful rock that hits home (“I’m Shakin’” especially), but it wanders too often into styles that don’t match the mood. When it’s good, it’s really good — you just wish the whole thing lived in that same pocket.

Aye alright

It's grand

The way he says "nervous" on I'm Shakin fecks me off, but still a good album.

It just wade me want to listen to better jack white stuff. But he's still good. Very few people make a guitar sound like that

Missing Pieces = That solo in the middle of the song is so fire!! The whole track is very enjoyable and easy to sing along to. Overall, it’s a really energetic and fun song. 3.5/5 Sixteen Saltines = Somehow, I completely missed this song the first time I heard it (okay, that’s probably just my fault). It’s definitely an interesting track, but a bit too strange for me personally. Still, I had fun listening to it, especially because of the guitar parts. However, I probably wouldn’t listen to it by choice very often. 3/5 Freedom at 21 = The main theme of the song is really catchy. “She’s got freedom in the 21st century” stayed in my head immediately. 3.5/5 Love Interruption = Ohhh, it’s a duet 😍! The main part of the song is extremely catchy, and the vocals work really well together 4/5 Blunderbuss = This feels like a completely different type of song compared to the earlier tracks. I really enjoyed its vibe, especially the beginning. 4/5 Hypocritical Kiss = THE piano opening 🔥 You can really feel a sense of disappointment and failure in expectations of love throughout the song. Very effective. 3.5/5 Weep Themselves to Sleep = I really liked the fact that the song was piano-driven, although the track itself was only okay for me. However, I listened to it a second time and IMMEDIATELY recognized it, which probably means it left a stronger impression on me than I thought 3.5/5 I’m Shakin’ = This feels like something completely different from the rest of the album. I know it was probably part of the artist’s vision, but I still have mixed feelings about it. Not a song for me 3/5 Trash Tongue Talker = Personally, I felt a bit less emotional connection with this song compared to the others. Still, I could definitely hear the blues-rock influence throughout the track, which was interesting. 3/5 Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy = The beginning reminded me of Amélie for some reason (idk why). But then the song suddenly changes direction and honestly… what was that 😭 Sorry, but this track just didn’t stand out to me very much. 2/5 I Guess I Should Go to Sleep = NOOOO, why does the beginning sound so similar to the previous song? Okay, update: the next part is WAY better. 3/5 On and On and On = Okay, here I can actually feel something emotionally. I searched for the meaning of the song afterward, and I completely understood the connection. The feelings I got from it and the message about exhaustion from constantly meeting other people’s expectations match perfectly. I loved the ending, because it genuinely feels overwhelming in an intentional way. 3.5/5 Take Me With You When You Go = I love the meaning of this song so much, especially the way the lyrical subject’s attitude toward their lover suddenly changes throughout the track. I also really liked the overall structure and emotional delivery 3.5/5 Overall, I liked this album, but I honestly don’t think I will return to the full project very often. Maybe I’ll revisit some songs from the beginning of the album, though. The track I enjoyed the least was definitely Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy. Overall, I would give the album a 3.5/5, although it leans a bit more toward a 3 for me personally

He reminds me of a woman named Paige who read us books in kindergarten. Her voice would quiver and rise, then drop silently low to tell us a secret. It would jump back and forth across the room, creating so many colorful visuals in my mind.

Hey this is fine. I think this is the kind of album that if you play it a lot you start to really love it. On first listen, though, it just doesn't move my needles. Jack White has a sound, and a vision for what his music should sound like, and he also doesn't mind going outside of his comfort zone if that's what a song needs. I respect that, even if nothing on this album really gets me going. THREE STARS

La música de Jack White tiene algo muy particular. En ocasiones se parece parece mucho a Led Zeppelin y en otras mantiene esa vibra única de él. Lo que puedo decir es que lo banco.

Another jack white album. That's not Lazaretto. Sisters, what is this world coming to? Whatever. Hopefully it's better than "Get Behind Me, Satan," though that album was so fantastically awful that this one should have no problem doing just that. So this album bumblerfluff has a couple of cool songs. The opener is better than most white stripes songs, though frankly that just means that it’s a decent enough rock song. The white stripes are not a good band. "Freedom at 21" is great, a mesmerizing little song, which has good enough lyrics. An interesting part of this album is the acoustic, folksy touches throughout. Sure, it's definitely a rock album, but it's got its fair share of stripped down, singer-songwriter jams, such as "Love Interruption" (phenomenal song by the way), or the title track (which kinda sucks, but that's fine). A lot of these songs ended up being more bearable than those on the other albums from the Stripes. Is it great? Not at all. Is it essential? Ehh. There aren't any songs on here I like as much as "Lazaretto" off of his next album, which was the Jack White song that I personally grew up on, even if there are some songs I like. Also, there are some UNDENIABLE duds here, such as the aforementioned title track, "I'm Shakin'," or "Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy," and the B-side is a MASSIVE falloff compared to the A-side. However it's still pretty good, especially compared to some of his OTHER work... 7.4/10

Something was off about the voice, but I do enjoy the music. ★★★

by song 3 still trying to get the right meaning of it. I mean is ok the vocals are interesting. hypocritical kiss sounds sweet i mean is ok i was a little confused of what genre is this one

This is my 100th album and, well, I think it’s the first where I have no idea why it’s here. Incredibly competent stuff with a few outstanding moments (second half of the last track, for instance), but it’s hard to imagine anything less essential than a Jack White solo album. For all its qualities, there’s little here you won’t find in more vital form either in a White Stripes record or one of the many influences he lovingly, faithfully cribs from.

I find his solo stuff enjoyable, but not memorable.

I don’t think I’ve ever listened to Jack White’s music outside of the White Stripes. I was sort of expecting a White Stripes record here, but the first track on this record was far bluesier and more subdued than I would expect. Then the second track started and.. well this is just a White Stripes record. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, I like the White Stripes, but I guess the first song got my hopes up that this would be something.. more? I enjoyed this album a reasonable amount, a lot of it felt extremely Led Zeppelin inspired, particularly the title track. I’m not convinced this is something I’d listen to on a purpose, but it’s fine.

Listening to this album I went back and forth between “why would I want to listen to a bunch of White Stripes rejects when I barely want to listen to the White Stripes to begin with?” and “well, I guess this has its charms”. For one, it has real drum parts. “Love Interruption”, “Weep Themselves to Sleep” and “Take Me With You When You Go” were my favorites whereas “Sixteen Saltines” and the cover of “I’m Shakin’” fell a bit flat, especially the later. Overall I thought it was fine, enjoyable even, but not something I’ll listen to again.

Jack White doesn't stray that far from his roots, but he sure knows how to produce a commercially successful blues-rock record in the 2010s (which is no small feat). He checks every box that makes music executives salivate. Multiple quadrants activated! I mourn the lack of a rebellious edge here — though even that loss isn't so new for fans of The White Stripes, imo. It's a fine record, even if a little underwhelming on the back half, but I'm not sure it really earns its place in the 1001.

Blunderbuss is a fine successor to The White Stripes' efforts, even if it doesn't rock as hard.

Dig it! Nothing mind blowing though, little surprised to find it here

I love the White Stripes but there’s something missing from his solo stuff. It must be Meg!

After the first couple of songs I was pretty set on the low rating I was going to give this but by the end it was actually alright

Take Me With You When You Go

I know Blunderbuss was well received—and a GRAMMY darling. I like White’s vocals, as always. But are the songs . . . especially memorable? Not for me.

Rock and Roll, not bad, not that revolutionary either...

7.5 / 10

gostei bem, mas acho que não vou ouvir muito ele não

kinda liked this more than i thought i wld thought a fun mix of sounds/vibes 3.5

Midway through the album, I realised, while looking at the album artwork, that this is Jack White from the While Stripes. This was an okay album, but definitely nothing too exciting. It was alright leaving it in the background though.

A few hidden gems in here, big fan of Jack White so I hope some Stripes show up later on in this list

I liked this album for the most part, but I preferred the White Stripes albums on this list. I’ll give this one a high three.

Same with everything Jack White touches, this suffers from him thinking he’s so clever and that being the focus.

Was ok, kept thinking the sound is Billy Joel/Robert Plant mash up

Overall I liked this album but most of what I liked fell in the beginning. The last part of the album lost me, it felt repetitive.

It's good, but none of the songs are fire.

Listened previously. Expectations: Mid - Verdict: Good - Solo Jack White uses more colours on his palette than The White Stripes and it makes for a fun sound. His songwriting is solid as ever and the riffs and general guitar work is fantastic. Like TWS, the softer stuff here is good, I like the title track. I'm Shakin' is simple but good. Solid album.

3.5. This is a very difficult one for me to grade. This would be a four for basically any artist, but I’m grading on a Jack White scale. I gave a four to “white blood cells”, and this doesn’t quite reach those peaks. But, every track is awesome, and it was a great way to kick off Jack’s solo career. Worthy of his legacy and catalog, but not quite classic.

Seems like rock/blues to me - I'm not super into it but get what they're trying to do. I don't love his voice. There are a few fun songs.

Unmistakably Jack White but also didn't leave a lasting impression. It's all okay but ultimately unmemorable.

It's okay, sadly doesn't sound as well as The White Stripes did. The lack of Meg White is very much audible through the record.

Mis canciones favoritas del álbum fueron “Sixteen Saltines”, “Love Interruption”, “Blunderbuss”, “I’m Shakin’”, “I Guess I Should Go To Sleep”, y especialmente “Take Me With You When You Go”, que fue la que más me gustó. En resumen, le doy un 8/10.

Okay not great. Didn't like his voice.

Me ha gustado este rock and roll 2012

I always liked the white stripes and various other JW projects. This was not bad, I liked the variety with little bits of ragtime thrown in. Probably not going on heavy rotation but may revisit. 3.7

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this since his Sister-Wife wasn't on the album, afaik. But it does feel like the logical extension of the white stripes. Favorite Track: Freedom At 21

Love Jack White but his non-White Stripes projects have never hit me the same way. He's a good songwriter but I much preferred the rawness of the White Stripes' first 3 albums and have never loved what he did in his later career quite as much.

В соло неплох парень

Didn't grab me, seemed very samey, minor chords and country vibes.

Like the White Stripes' Elephant album, this has a lot of great vintage sounds with songs that I could largely take or leave. There are some winners here, for sure, and overall I enjoyed this more than Elephant, but it's still not something that I'm likely to put into heavy rotation.

Got already

I really want to like jack whites solo stuff. I love a lot of the white stripes stuff and the first raconteurs album is incredible, but I find his solo stuff less interesting. Like a cool riff might start but it either stops too quickly or he'll put some other instrument along with it that destroys the impact the riff had in the first place. I keep trying. I remember seeing him play at Glastonbury as a solo artist and it was just boring to watch, he was clearly enjoying himself, but it was quite self indulgent and it didn't feel like they were performing for the audience. Compare that seeing the white stripes and the raconteurs and the difference is huge, he can be so captivating when he wants to be. Alas. I don't dislike it, but it does little for me. A low 3.

A bit more mellowed out in comparison to the White Stripes era, I don't know the solo stuff before this (if there is any) but quite enjoyable. Extra points for the vulture on the cover.

A shame what became of Jack White after The White Stripes ended. The music on Blunderbuss is dull, mediocre and average at best. But still not as bad as what is to come with the spoken word rapping shit he devotes himself to in the following years.

I think I've never heard this one? I remember not liking the singles off of Lazaretto and not successfully listening to Boarding House. I did listen to Fear of the Dawn and No Name which I liked and then never listened to again. I should have and maybe I will after this! Oh ! this one is fine.

alors j'ai bien aimé mais c'est pas le coup de coeur, mais ça reste cool à réécouter peut-être que ça cliquera

Все, что делает Джек Уайт, абсолютно мимо меня

Overall good album that you feel good while listening.

Not my favorite Jack White album, but enjoyable.

Bastante sin más. No creo que 2012 deje lugar para el rock de los 70.

No es malo pero es un embole si sos como yo y no todo el rock blues te suena igual 6,5/10

It was fine. I didn’t hate it, I didn’t really like it either. His voice can be grating at times but the music was decent enough.

Solid rock and roll music throughout the album. The vocals at times gave vibes of the White Stripes but also of Led Zepplin as times as well. An enjoyable listen for a first pass at Jack White.

I appreciate that Jack White is an auteur of great reknown these days but this feels much more like sonic searching than it does and sort of discoveries. He’s at his best when the music is clean and clear, whether the orchestration is minimal or extravagant - See Ball and Biscuit or You Dont Know What Love Is or Level or I Cut Like a Buffalo or The Air Near My Fingers.

Some would say quintessential Jack White but I would say typical. An okay 3.

Alright, time for another solo album from a member of a band that already has albums on this list! Here we have Blunderbuss, the solo debut of former White Stripes frontman Jack White. Now, I've reviewed a grand total of 3 White Stripes album for this album project, and I think they're all pretty good. I gave all of them 4s after all. How does Blunderbuss compare to them? Not quite as well, but this is still good. Blunderbuss is a solid album, but there's something about it that I'm not as big on. Something's missing here. Is it Meg? I don't know. Maybe. She is pretty talented, but Jack is also quite talented in his own right. Maybe it's the lack of any killer classic songs. You think about the White Stripes albums and they have some all-time classics. "Seven Nation Army," "Fell In Love With a Girl," "Blue Orchid." Great songs. Blunderbuss doesn't really have anything on that level. It's got some good songs, don't get me wrong. "Sixteen Saltines," "Love Interruption," and "I'm Shakin'" are pretty good. The album doesn't have any real duds either. However, I can't really see these songs sticking in my head for super long, you know? I will say that Jack does use this album as a way to experiment with things quite a bit. I definitely have respect for that, even if it makes the album feel a little tiny bit scattershot as a whole. The lyrics are definitely more focused though, with a clear focus on relationships and the end of relationships especially. I think he does it fairly well, but not perfectly. Overall, Blunderbuss is an admirable effort, though I don't think it quite holds a candle to his best work with the White Stripes. High 3/5.

not bad

I enjoyed this. For the most part, nice bluesy-rock throwback. Definitely toned down from the White Stripes.

Harmless music

Jack White is actually white, not confusing like Jack Black

not the white stripes but decent songs

His voice can get a bit screechy for me, but I love the overall vibe of the sound

Some songs better, some not my taste.

3....like the album and love Jack White, but tough to rank an album with no real hits...great listen though...

83/1001 🇺🇸 I was big into the White Stripes, but this one passed me by. I've checked my CD collection and its not there. God knows what i was doing then. I can't remember. I've listened to this solidly 3 times this evening and whilst its got all the hallmarks of Jack's amazingly unique talent all over it, its not all that memorable. Its very bluesy in places and an obvious movement on from White Stripes with a greater cast of musicians as accompaniment. I'm giving this 3 stars as i've had such a good run of 4s and 5s recently and this doesnt measure up, so i need to even my par up. Best Tracks: Hypocritical Kiss, Sixteen Saltines, Hip (Eponymous)Poor Boy.

Best Track - "Sixteen Saltines"

Valkoinen Jaakko. Saattaa olla että joskus palaan tämän pariin ja keskityn enemmän sanoihin. Olin kuulevinani siellä jänniä juttuja.

Some great moments on this one, but some parts sound painfully recycled and middling.

Has some bangers, and some pretty standard blues rock. Also shoutout to Rocksmith 2014

Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I just never cared much for Jack White or The White Stripes. It’s not terrible, but it’s not for me. 2.5⭐️

Would rather listen to some White Stripes albums...

I think I prefer Detroit Jack to Nashville Jack. There's something about the production on this album that doesn't feel right and I wish I had the technical knowledge to arcticulate why. Something to do with compressors or mic placement or EQ, right? The effect is stifling as opposed to the unbridled sound of the best White Stripes songs.

I have heard of this artist, but I don't think I have heard this artist, thank you for this opportunity.

A sort of middling follow up to the white stripes 3.5*

Нет динамики даже на большой громкости Вроде инструменты и мелодия, ну все хорошо, однако звучит плосковато, тускло

medio dark para el rock que me gusta a mí

Alright in all ways.

Love the lyric writing and the piano, can't help but feel like the album cover doesn't suit the album. Other than that, my favorites were "Love Interrupion", "Blunderbuss" and "On And On And On"

This is absolutely not a bad album, but what the hell is it doing on this list?

This isn't really my thing, but it's not bad.

This is a good album, but only has a couple of really good songs. Well worth a listen, but not outstanding to me.

Well made. Interesting but ultimately not one I’d probably revisit.

low 3.5 a voz do jack white me irrita em algumas músicas, mas ele brilha nas canções mais blues/singer-songwriter, e achei que a segunda metade do album é um pouco mais interessante, as músicas são mais variadas, o piano se mistura melhor com a produção realmente não gosto quando ele vai mais pro alt rock/garage rock aqui porque parece uma versão piorada do que tem na discografia do white stripes destaques: love interruption, hypocritical kiss, trash tongue talker, on and on and on, take me with you when you go

I've never been into the White Stripes (either pro or con), so I have no way of comparing his solo material to that, and am going into this completely cold. So here's some blues rock - not super original, but well done for what it is. I hear this album as an updated take on the kinds of American rock music you'd hear in the 70s. Guitars sound good, some interesting vocals and keyboards, good production. But while I wouldn't turn any of this off if it was on the radio, I'm not clamoring to get a copy of it either. I do like the Black Vulture that Jack's got on his shoulder there. Is that his pet? 3 stars... it could aim closer to 4 on a second listen, but I'm sticking with 3 for now.

I was never that big of a fan of Jack White. I like rock music in most forms, so this is still definitely listen-able, but it's just not gonna be better than good.

I prefer some of Jack’s later solo work but this is a good entry point after a legendary white stripes career. Jack has such a unique guitar sound it’s hard not to like.

Normally live White Stripes / Jack White, but couldn't get into this.

this was alright 3/5

Good, would probs listen again

Not a bad album, nothing too exciting, but I did enjoy listening. Very Stones-esque. Not really groundbreaking, think I expected more from Jack White tbh.

Album #87 Jack White: Blunderbuss I’ve enjoyed whatever White Stripes I’ve come across, though I haven’t quite gotten as into them as I have a lot of the other rock-revival acts of the 2000s. The Whites Stripes were always an interesting band to me because, by all aesthetic accounts, they really should have been more in line with the emo bands of the 2000s, trying to emulate the Cure’s aesthetic to radio-friendly pop-punk. But, they actually were more of an act focused on recreating the 60s and 70s garage and blues rock movements. Especially in this solo album, it’s clear to see White’s love for Led Zeppelin and the Stooges, among many others. Blunderbuss is a very enjoyable and concise trip to the past, that doesn’t really feel like a 2010s album to me. There are times when I don’t quite enjoy White’s imagery or vocal inflections, but for the most part, this is a pretty damn good rock album. I think I definitely got to listen to more White Stripes, though, as I’m sure it is just this, but better. Best Tracks: Love Interruption, Blunderbuss, Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy, Worst Track: I Guess I Should Go To Sleep Score out of 10: 7

Great stuff. Really liked it. I looked at the genre and it said blues rock/garage rock. Need to check this out as the guitar and instruments seem to be great and the right amount that i like.

I thought I was going to like this more than I did. Just didn't hold my attention.

I can eat seventeen saltines 💁‍♀️ Likes: Missing Pieces, Love Interruption, Hypocritical Kiss

Ok white boy do your thing. Oh you have an emo voice. Oh man. Things were going so well. Oh did Don't Hurt Yourself with Beyoncé. Ok I recognize your game Mr. White. Yeah it's just some emo rock. I like it. Groovy I suppose. Oh he's part of the white stripes isn't he. Oh man I really did not like that album. He's bette solo. But also not my favourite. I like the guitar. The songs are all interesting, at least, I'll give him that. He's very dynamic. It's different. Very 2012 but at the same time very unique. Most songs will not make it to the playlists but I will enjoy them while I hear them. Emo accent strikes again. Wait no pretty lady come back I liked your voice. Hippopotamus. Dooont gaf. I guess I should go to fucking sleep. Please don't go on and on and on. You can leave me here and go I don't mind. Favourite: Freedom At 21/Take Me With You When You Go Least favourite: Love Interruption

its fine

I'm a big White Stripes fan, like the Raconteurs a little, and think the Dead Weather are great. The solo Jack stuff I'd heard I also generally liked. Sadly, with that background this album was a letdown. It's got more of the ballad-y, piano-driven countryish stuff they ran with in Get Behind Me Satan, which is not BAD, but not necessarily what I want. A few of the songs are quite excellent, particularly "Love Interruption" and "Take Me With You When You Go." The rest is underwhelming. Not bad by any means, but underwhelming. I don't see myself calling this one up instead of the White Stripes. Pity.

I've listened to this album before (in the background), so it's nice to give it my full attention now, since this year I've been in a White Stripes/Jack White phase. Much of the music has Jack White's signature catchy riffs that he started out with in The White Stripes. Additionally, he incorporates more blues and acoustic elements, and the lyrics come across as more personal and vulnerable. The first half was strong and the most like his previous work, but I found that the second half was weaker and almost like a completely different album (probably because of the sharp uptick in the bluesy sound, which isn't a favorite of mine). I would love to rate this higher, but I only liked half the album and the other half was too country and folk-style for me.

I wish I liked Jack White's voice a bit more! I'm not a huge fan of the White Stripes, but I did enjoy the more indie-leaning and grandiose composition and instrumentation. I found myself zoning out at points - songs like Love Interruption just never caught up my attention and felt a little out-of-place along songs like Weep Themselves to Sleep, which featured a full and energetic instrument backing.

Who's Jealous Of Who? 1001 Albums Generator 239 (3/3/2026) Interesting that this is what Jack White was doing right after the disbandment of The White Stripes. This is a pretty eclectic selection of songs, but most of them are some sort of garage/blues rock, but there's also a sizable selection of folksier rock tunes as well. Some of those, like the title track, are really good, but some of them, like Love Interruption, are boring and uninspired. The title track has this Americana flair to it that works really well. Sixteen Saltines is perhaps the most "White Stripes"-esque song on the album. It's just a classic garage rocker. Weep Themselves To Sleep is another great song in this same vain. However, Blunderbuss definitely starts to lose some steam at the end. Trash Tongue Talker is one of the worst songs here, Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy is another boring folk song, and I Guess I Should Go To Sleep is a weird jazzy piano song that never gets off the ground. I do like On And On And On's psychedelic country-inspired edge and am I crazy to say that the jam of Take Me With You When You Go is almost krautrock? Probably. Overall, looking at the songs that I liked, I don't think I can give this better than a 3.5/5, rounded down to a 3, even though I do like it more than a lot of other 3 star albums. There's just too much fluff. Favs: Sixteen Saltines Blunderbuss Take Me With You When You Go Least Fav: Love Interruption

I liked this more than I expected. Still pretty mediocre.

Nice surprise. Catchy, banging song with incredibly juicy and crunchy sounding guitars.

Never listened to a solo album of his before, but heard the odd track. Probably less like white stripes than I was expecting in parts and definitely not as good for me. Probably unfair to compare them, but hard not to. I did enjoy it, but I was hoping for more. I think 16 saltines is my favourite. 3.5 but 3 as not as good as white stripes

Jack White is undoubtedly one of the premier rockers of the time, through and through. This album, similar to his White Stripes work, is just pure rock and roll. His voice is nothing great, but it's absolutely perfect for the sound he produces.

Nice little pastiche

good but not my fav jack white project. much prefer the white stripes

Gražu, nesitikėjau, kad jis kurtų tokią muziką.

A good album, nice guitar and very characteristic! I'm not a big fan of his voice which is the reason why it got 3.5 Happy to play that again in the future

Really enjoyed it on first listen with the first 3 tracks being the strongest of the album. The rest is good but not great.

schon sehr gut auch solo ich mag die strips...c

Was prepared to like it, but I didn't really enjoy this one.

Fine but first song hits

The first handful of songs weren't very promising, but by the time I got to I'm Shakin' (which was great), I was into it. I think Jack White is a bit overhyped, but perhaps through the course of this album, I'm understanding a bit more about why he gets so much attention. There's a lot on the album that doesn't sound like anything else, and I appreciate that. I'll definitely be torn between 3 and 4 stars when it comes time to rate this 3.74

Good stuff, Love Interruption was a highlight.

I like that Jack White covers some old school blues tunes. Not all of the songs are strong, but I think it’s a really good album overall

I enjoyed this album way more then I thought I would I will definitely be listening to it again.

Decent bluesy album by Jack white, it is good and some choices were fantastic innovative but not enough. Is a good record for a rotation, but didn’t kill me

It's a good album. Straight forward blues/rock that you would expect from White. 3/5 Might listen again

Really surprised this album came out in 2012. Reminds me of The Doors and CCR in a way. Favorite track: I Guess I Should Go To Sleep

I hated it at first, then liked it. A little whirlwind.

Theres better Jack white albums out there.

Loud Jack White with rock vibes I suppose. Not bad, not my fave, but good quality.

Well, this seems to be in the same category as the white stripes where there are a few great songs, a few decent songs, and a few bad songs. Jack White even solo seems like he would make a fantastic greatest hits, but not solid albums. I did love the variety, and I did really like all the piano. But he's at his best when he is cranking out some killer guitar riff with his vocals wailing over top.

Did not know what to expect. The cover art scared me a little. I was pleasantly surprised. I liked it enough that I will probably explore listening to more music bt him. I think it serves a 3.5. This is the classic example of why I participate. This is makes listening g to some of the other stuff i dont enjoy worthwhile.

Some good songs but I believe most of his album’s sound the same.

When I started listening to the first track, I immediately recognized the voice. One Google search later, and hey it's the lead singer of The White Stripes! I like the vibe of that band more than the solo stuff, but it was pretty good. There was some really great electric guitar mixed into this album that always pulled me back in when the track grew boring. It wasn't exactly an album I think I'll revisit, but I still thought it was pretty decent.

A bit disappointing overall. Whilst it’s nice to hear Jack White with something approaching a normal band accompanying him, the songs for the most part are a bit lackluster. Nothing actually bad about any if it, and some it pretty good, but as a whole package it doesn’t do a lot for me.

Definitely music made by Jack White. There's a little bit more stuff later in the album, but otherwise it's not ground breaking

it was just fine

Album 49 Top 3 favorites off the album: Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy, Love Interruption, I'm Shakin' I liked it! I think it got really fun when it hit the tracks that felt more like swing (not that the rest of the album wasn't also good). I was going to concern myself because Love Interruption was going to be the top of my list. Love as destruction... I rebuke this energy, may it never find me. In all seriousness though, I enjoyed this one a lot. Another case where I like it enough that I don't have many notes. Cheers!

it was okay but not my favourite thing.

“Blunderbuss” is about beginnings and endings. White’s debut solo album, it is a departure from “The White Stripes” more straightforward, gritty sound towards rock fusion. White in particular showcases his experimental tendencies and musical range, incorporating elements of blues, rock and jazz. Thematically, it is, quite moody, with the content said to be about death. This feel is reinforced in part by the album’s relative lack of energy and “catchiness”. A solid, albeit strange album that feels like it is missing something.

I'd never listened to a Jack White solo album, but it turned out exactly how I thought it would. He's not doing anything radically new here, mostly just evolving his (by now) signature sound into larger arrangements and occasionally throwing some twang on it. Somehow those changes make it feel kinda tired to me. After 15 years of The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, and The Dead Weather, I'm sure he was a little tired so maybe it makes sense. It's palatable, rootsy rock & roll that would please a crowd at any big music festival or state fair (He's gotta have a few White Stripes songs on the setlist too, right?). It has its moments, but I don't know why it's received so much praise over the years. It's like Taco Bell releasing a new menu item that just combines their existing ingredients in a new way but somehow people still lose their minds about it. I was always more of a Del Taco guy anyway, so I'll cleanse my palate with some Black Keys now.

I like Jack White. I am happy he continued with his solo career. I prefer Lazaretto over this and its all fine, but definitely nothing mind blowing.

I like blues rock. But Jack White has never really appealed to me. I like some of his stuff, but I don't love any of it. Don't know why.

i like the first half better

A very decent album, although kind of a disappointing one relative to White’s best. Rock musicians tend to peak at a lower level of maturity and then become progressively less interesting the further they mature, and unfortunately I think this is true of Jack. Best song: Freedom at 21

Top Songs: Missing Pieces Sixteen Saltines Trash Tongue Talker

Pretty decent Jack White album

Blunderbuss is a very solid rock album and it is also the first solo release of Jack White, showing his ability to write great rock music even beyond The White Stripes.

Some cool songs in here. Not sure about the resentful lyrics. Great production and riffage throughout.

I should love JW but he leaves me flat as listening to WS and here, it just passes me by. However I enjoyed this with a wider sound and instruments, and it’s not just the singles that grabbed me…. 1. Missing Pieces 2. I'm Shakin' 3.

Not my favorite Jack White but some pretty interesting songs on the latter half of it.

Huh? This is on here?

1: Love Interruption 2: I’m Shakin’ 3: I Guess I Should Go To Sleep

Enjoyed it but nothing remarkable really.... standard Jack White / White stripes sound.

Better than expected

Boy can write, sing, and jam 10/10 soundtrack for having a liedown ahead of a Heated Rivalry dance

Solid album, enjoyable, a few standout moments. He uses the piano so well.

Pretty good record, adventurous and eclectic.

A summary: - I prefer it to his White Stripes work. - I think 16 Saltines is fantastic. - I think the compiler of this list is clearly a bit of a Jack White fan.

White’s obviously a lover of his craft and what he does, he does with authenticity. The more blues inspired songs work best here with some of the energy he brings (‘freedom at 21’, ‘I’m shakin’’, ‘take me with when you go’) but there’s only so much honky tonk, boogie woogie, and stompy drums I can take and lost interest by the end.

Good but not my thing really.

I was surprised to like this album, to be honest! I'd heard of Jack White but I think I was confusing him with a James Blunt type so was expecting more '20s something man with a guitar and a broken heart' type vibe. There is so much depth to 'Blunderbuss' - lyrically and musically. I love that you can taste the influences in the music - like Elvis in I'm Shakin'. It's also one of those albums where at first listen it's great, but it gets better and better the more you dig deeper into the sound and the meaning of the songs.

Interest

Rawest than some of the stripes records, I quite liked the sound of the record. Definitely a worthy addition. 8/10 [KEEP]

Basically like listening to a reduced White Stripes, which is what this is, and with 3 White Stripes albums (at least) on this list already, I think Jack White is represented more than enough already. It's still an absolutely fine album.

Cool en vrai, mais je lui donnerais quand même pas un 4. Disons un 3 avec un 👍

SOLOS DE GUITARE ?? forcément il est bien les mecs

Eclectic rock for sure, but pretty good. Favorite track was hypocritical kiss

Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Looking forward to hearing a White Stripes album at some point in this journey so I can compare with this solo effort.

(71/100)

"Blunderbuss" starts off feeling like a sendoff for The White Stripes. Later albums like "Get Behind Me Satan" and "Icky Thump" can be heard all over the first three songs "Missing Pieces", "Sixteen Saltines" and "Freedom at 21". Feels like Jack White is tipping his large-rimmed hat one last time. This farewell tribute is interrupted, ahem, by "Love Interruption", easily the best song on the album by a mile and a half. There are still some Stripes influences here, closer to the "White Blood Cells" and "Elephant" era, but they're blended with what White picked up working with The Raconteurs, and it comes out sounding genuinely new. A love song about what love takes from you rather than what it gives back. Pretty genius lyrics. From here, the album starts to move in a new direction for Jack White. "Blunderbuss" signals a shift towards a more country, folky and bluegrass sound. And this is where he really shows his strengths as a solo artist. "I'm Shakin'" is another class song. Filled with a mix of doo-wop and blues, it doesn't take itself too seriously. Bonus points for having the best pronunciation of the word "nervous" ever ("noi-vous"). I'm a big fan of The White Stripes and Jack White, and I've listened to this album a lot in the past. It's a great album, packed with great songs. Would I say it's an album that you MUST hear before you die? Probably not. There's nothing ground-breaking or particularly elevating here. But as a collection of really enjoyable songs, it's well worth your time. 3.5 stars

Jack White’s solo stuff never quite gets to the same heights as the White Stripes did. But then, neither did the White Stripes with their last couple albums. Ultimately there are some bangers here but the whole thing is just slightly unlikeable

I already reviewed this on 05/08/24 - and here was my review: "Weep themselves to sleep was alright. I'm shakin cover was decent. Outside of that, I found this album pretty uninspiring." I'd add that after getting through the 3 White Stripes albums on this thing, this is a massive letdown. It's certainly listenable, though.

Not sure about this. I liked a lot of the music, instrumentalism, riffs etc, but I'm really not keen on Jack White's vocal style and some of the lyrics are... hmm. I'm glad I listened, but I don't think I'll find myself reaching for this much. I liked Blunderbuss, I'm Shakin' and Trash Tongue Talker the most.

Pretty cool album, I like the drums and the guitar parts in some of the song. Weep Themselves To Sleep is prob my favorite. I've only heard the name Jack White like once and I've never heard his music so this was pretty cool. 6.8/10

stanky leg tunes

Not good, not bad

This was about what I expected. Not sure how I feel about piano Jack White songs

forgettable but fine

Me gustó, pero no me transmitió nada.

Hell of a funky riff-rock blues album. Jackie don't miss.

I had a terrible Whote Stripes album just yesterday and groaned when I saw this album come up. It was not as bad as yesterday’s album. Not great but there was some good stuff here. I don’t think I would listen again, and I do not think this is a listen before you die album. It’s just ok. Favorite: I’m shakin’ 3

A finely tuned debut studio album from Mr. White Stripes himself. "I'm Shakin" definitely stood out more than the rest, but overall it's a solid (and very 2010s) listen.

Not the best jack white album out there that’s for sure. But there’s some good songs in here. 3.5/5

Catchy tunes, very bluesy, could do with more emotional heft

More fun than I expected, I think I would have loved this had I heard it when it was new. 3 rather than 4 stars because while I enjoyed it, I can’t see myself listening to it again.

this was Jack White's first statement on record as a solo artist following the dissolution of The White Stripes. it reviewed quite well when it came out, and I think it's partially because people were clamoring for new music from White at the time. it had been five years, give or take, since both the release of the final White Stripes album, Icky Thump, and the announcement of their hiatus that followed. the year before White released Blunderbuss, they officially broke up. so, what does Jack White's music sound like when he strikes out on his own? well, it still sounds quite a lot like the Stripes—no surprises there. White's proclivity for catchy, raw blues rock is very much intact, and he's writing songs in a vein that will be eminently familiar to anyone with a even passing knowledge of White Stripes hits. the major differences come down to the arrangements and the production, both of which are much more intricate and lavish. there's more musicians in the mix playing a wider variety of instruments. Meg White's drumming is often a punchline, but her absence here was actually quite noticeable for me. like, sure, you might say that the drums on Blunderbuss (mostly played by Carla Azar of Autolux) are "better" or more "technically proficient" compared to Meg White's, but they're certainly not nearly as memorable or iconic. if you've already listened to the multiple White Stripes records to be found in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, I don't see how Blunderbuss necessarily lives up to the book's title. it's well-written, well-played, well-recorded, the works! I'm just not enough of a Jack White fan to get more than that out of the listening experience. decent 6/10.

Unusual approaches...liked it

Album No. 0122 on my list. Hmm, I’m really not sure what to make of “Blunderbuss” by Jack White. Sometimes I think it’s pretty cool, sometimes I think it’s rather boring. It’s certainly not a bad album. It does have a lot of variety, and as usual with Jack White’s productions, it sounds pretty good. On the other hand, there is little consistency between the songs. I’m not sure why that is an issue and I am aware that it contrasts with the overall great sound, but I dunno. Something feels a bit off and some songs… kinda just don’t feel relevant… Anyways, before rambling on about my inconsistent feelings about this: I’ll add “Sixteen Saltines”, “Love Interruption”, and “I’m Shakin’” to my playlist. 3/5 stars.

Pretty good album with that unique Jack White sound. Not groundbreaking or essential but fun and surprising in small spurts.

like a 3.5. nostalgiac.

never liked his solo stuff quite as much as white stripes but i enjoyed this one!

It didn't really connect with me, but it wasn't bad.

This is a real mixed bag. Some of these songs are really good and/or have some pretty interesting moments in them, but others are middling, generic blues-rock. Overall I’d say it’s of slightly lower quality than most White Stripes albums and some of the songs are definite skips on a future listen. I bet if he’d held on to these songs and picked the best ones from this and his next album two years later, it would have added up to one great album instead of two pretty average ones. 3.5/5 but rounding down.

never really cared for the white stripes. jack white is very talented, but im just not really into his style of rock tbh

Better than some, worse than others, but still way short or bucket list material

Jack White's "No Name" was one of my favourite albums of 2024 and Blunderbuss feels like a slightly less refined version of that. It's a fun, jaunty blues rock album but is ultimately lacking that special something you come to expect from a Jack White production.

Not quite my style. Savne nånn gode refreng

A fun album by an excellent guitarist. I think this is very close to a 4 for me, but it is not quite there.

Decent album

Jack White's inventive use of keys and synths made for a whimsical and experimental album that gave me beetles vibes and while many of the lyrics were off-putting was a fine listen.

"Take Me With You When You Go" is gorgeous. Exhilarating and expansive.

I don't really have many thoughts on this. It's not bad but I wouldn't listen again.

Decent enough. Looooved the guitar work in I'm Shakin'.

I liked a few songs, Sixteen Saltines and I’m Shakin’. Nice sound overall.

Not bad, original but nothing stood out

This is pleasant enough without being spectacular. I was a fan of Elephant, but this was 10 years later and it sounds like Jack had mellowed out a bit and matured his musical style. My personal faves included Sixreen Saltines and Freedom at 21, which reminds me of 7 Nation Army, although anything off the first half of the album is worthy of a listen. The second half dlips a bit, but there's nothing bad on it. It's consistently slightly above average so gets a high 3 stars.

When #1001 throws up an album that you forgot was already on your shelves; then after playing it, you realise why you don't remember. It's not terrible, but there's nothing here that isn't on any other Jack White or White Stripes album, and clearly that makes it kind of "whatever".
