Pretty nice easy to listen to

There is only so much Motown I can take and this is about just enough. There are 3 standards on this album but thankfully not the overplayed Respect. Whilst the blues musicianship on “Good to me as I am to you.” Is wonderful, Franklin’s voice is too pure for the genre. And she doesn’t groove, for me, on “Groovin’l But solid Motown from an era where albums contained too much filler.

Lots of upbeat songs, great horns and vocals

excellent, the passion i deserve to hear!!!

Amazing album by one of the greatest singers ever.

Outstanding album! Upbeat, rich and Aretha is bringing her A Game.

The voice here is amazing, and (obvious take alert) the songs are generally amazing. I did find a few of the selections here a little too syrupy for my taste, but any album with Chain Of Fools and People Get Ready can't be bad.

Raw as fuck. If this was a 2023 release, then the production would drown out the voice. Not so in 1968. The vocals lead, with everything else added as backing only. It's great to hear the classic soul starting to stray in new directions. Jazz, rock, even a little country soul. Sexy as well.

Not much really needs to be said, because you can't go wrong with Aretha. Standouts are Natural Woman and Groovin'.

Great album, amazing artist.

Very enjoyable album by an iconic singer.

I enjoy it as a casual listen! Dont know how often ill come back to it, but she is incredibly talented.

All around decent album, not exactly my genre but there are plenty of recognizable tunes and that iconic voice is undeniably fantastic.

music where the main selling point is that it sounds amazing is never something that really appeals to me, but holy hell i've gotta admit aretha franklin knows how to do it. this sounds so *good*! "ain't no way" is what convinced me to give it a 4 instead of a 3, but if amazing sounding soul is what you like then look no further

Pleasantly Suprised Not so much a sing-along album as a vibe album If I ever get a record player I would want to buy this album This album made me grove. I was feeling myself listening to it. Favorite Song: (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone

Classic.

cool guitar, beautiful voice, not my style tho

Great album, great voice, awesome soul!

Amazing voice and ambiance

Amazing piece of soul

Legend.

Much richer than I had appreciated before. More ebullient than I can really dig on, but I respect the technique.

The Queen of Soul stays running vocal circles around everything and everyone.

Some legendary classics on this album - "Chain of Fools" and "A Natural Woman" are standouts, but all of these songs hang together with soulful singing and playing.

Seems like a crime to give her anything less than a 4, and I ain't breaking the law today.

Beautiful, as always.

Such a sensational performer and an amazing voice. What else needs to be said?

Amazing singer. Outside what I’d normally listen to but hard to critique any element of the album.

It's real nice. "Ain't No Way" wins the best track award, which is a lovely soulful ballad.

Really good! Can see why she’s so highly regarded. Great voice, great performance, and good songs too.

good album! aretha has an amazing voice and these songs are solid. i didn't really understand the "bonus selections" on the spotify album just being mono versions of the songs on the album that sounded the same to me, but I guess that's more spotify's fault than anything. favorites: chain of fools, you make me feel like a natural woman

A solid album, a powerhouse that exudes cool and soul from every pore. A voice for the ages and can see myself coming back for more.

Back to back Aretha Franklin albums, and this was much the better one.

A wonderful showcase of songwriting, talent and soul.

Aretha in the height of her career, with Eric Clapton on guitar. She gives an incredible performance, with a versatile loud and energetic voice capable of showing all sorts of emotions. It's an excellent display of Memphis-style soul, with the first half incorporating gospel (including her two hits), and the second half more focused on funk and blues. Impressed by the backing band and vocals, especially the funky bass lines. The cover "Groovin" was a pleasant surprise, and "Ain't No Way" was a romantic jazzy closer. No bad tracks, just a couple I didn't care for much like "People Get Ready."

Very easy listening.

Classic Aretha!!

The amazing thing about Aretha Franklin was that she could take a popular song by another artist, put her spin on it and create a wholly different song that is 10x better than the original. There are plenty of examples of that on this album. 4.5/5

Classic album, what a voice, fantastic instrumentation. FOUR

som muito agradável, romantico e tals vozerao, classic

First time listening to an album by her front to back, really enjoyed it. Falls off a little towards the end but still great.

A lot of bangers in this one. Surprised myself by knowing a lot of them even though I've never intentionally listened to Aretha Franklin.

Amazing voice, amazing songs.

Soulful, easy on the ears, sounded nostalgic! I liked the mood it put me in.

Legend

She makes nearly every song (not written by her) her own. Wasn't sure how I would feel about her version of "Groovin'" but I found it to be really good. This is Aretha at her peak and it's hard to find better music than this. I would love to have this on vinyl.

Don't know if this is her best album but Chain of Fools, Ain't No Way, and Natural Woman all deserve to be on list of her best. Give me Aretha anyday, anyplace, anytime, and I'll be good.

Not my closest listen by any means, but this absolutely rips. Aretha has such a commanding voice that suits these soulful instrumentals so well. I enjoyed this -- solid 4 / 5.

There's no beating that voice - superb.

The Queen of Soul. Spent time with Jimmy Johnson and David Hood (The Swampers) Muscle Shoals Al. They helped bring Aretha’s sound to life after she lost her record deal in the 60’s. Went with Jimmy to the Premier of the Muscle Shoals movie and saw him get the Talladega keys to the City.

It was pretty nice

The queen of Soul/R&B - what a voice! Not necessarily the best selection of her songs, but it includes the incomparable "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", and her version of the gospel classic "People Get Ready" (later also covered by Bob Marley).

I can appreciate when something is just good. I saw the track list and thought it was a greatest hits record

Lekker

godess

Wat een discography. ze hit altijd juist

Aretha Franklin's talent was really what made me enjoy this album the most. How could you not be happy while listening to her sing?

AWESOME! Takes me back

I dig every tune on this record. Aretha’s voice is phenomenal and the horn arrangements are lots of fun.

(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, chain of fools.

Classique

Not my usual genre but very enjoyable listening nonetheless

Very good

Very easy and fun listen. Relaxing at times and captures a zeitgeist that continues to exist in America despite the change in time and generations.

Dang. Wow. She got pipes

"Chain of Fools" feels like it belongs in a movie. it makes me feel like i'm in one. "people get ready" is a vibe! the thing about this genre is that i get bored of it v quickly if the song isn't like, exceptionally good/makes me feel things. the guitar in "good to me as i am to you" is so nice! edit: oh it's the one with eric clapton!! i can see myself in the 60s, my hair in a beehive, wearing a sundress, dancing to this album, maybe with a cigarette in my hand and a lover by my side. i looovee "ain't no way" i like the longer chain of fools better, i think. Though starting the album fast is a good choice. but i like that they included this one still.

Hoy no puedo poner ni un pero. Maravillosa (PSP)

Powerful, versatile voice. What else do you need from a soul-singing woman?

Absolute classic. The power in Aretha’s voice is undeniable. The backing band is also great. Recorded with the legendary Muscle Shoals session musicians (Eric Clapton plays on a track too). There’s a documentary on YouTube about the Muscle Shoals studio, highly recommend watching so you can fully appreciate their greatness.

There will never be a voice like Aretha's - never a mood to match. She perfectly straddles the transition from gospel to 70s soul and brings the essence of spiritual devotion into the secular world seamlessly. Her voice is controlled while expansive and completely inspiring. It's such a complete expression it makes you want to punch walls. Having said that, I still found elements of this album a touch humdrum and incoherent. Aretha is a five star, life-changing singer but the album falls shy of its potential.

Solid. Wouldn't think I'd enjoy the "showy" vocals but they aren't showy. Just good.

Listened to it twice through and would definitely listen again in the future

She can sing, huh?

Enjoyable.

Just great classic soul

She killed it, great album, beautiful voice, timeless.

Another great album. We are on a hot streak! Great voice across all songs, I really appreciate the range of powerful, energetic songs that flow well with more melodic, softer songs. Apart from Aretha holding down the songs with her voice, I think the rest of the band on this album deserve credit; especially the brass and backup singers. Wish I could give this 4.5 stars. Never really listened to Aretha Franklin much before. I understand where all of the respect for her comes from. Another reason I appreciate this 1001 albums challenge.

Clapton played guitar on this whoa. Chain of Fools and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman are the obvious standouts. Very short album but what a voice! I dig it.

Queen! The rating is just based on my taste and potential desire to listen to this again. I’m sure she actually deserves all 5.

She's obviously the greatest soul singer of all time. What else do you want me to say?

A hit machine, I love these songs

I don’t find this kind of music particularly interesting, but I’ll give it a 4 on the strength of Frankin’s voice, which is astonishing. Aint no way was my favorite

Hard to say much other than great listen.

Good, although I probably didn’t enjoy it as much as I expected given Franklin’s colossal reputation.

This is pretty dang good. Out of 10 songs, 3 are all-timers that will be around long after me...

Hard not to be engaged and entertained with this collection of tracks - a mixture of classics and moving vocal performances that left me wanting more with the whole record coming in at under half an hour. An easy one to add to the rotation - 4-and-a-half stars. Fave track: Ain’t No Way

I would get a lot of hate for saying her voice is a little overrated. She is great though

saturday the 13th it was on this day i found out im not jewish or italian. it was also on this fateful day i got my ass surgically removed and handed to me on a silver platter (much like the head of st john the baptist). because on this great and terrible day laura absolutely eviscerated me at smash. and this was the day i listened to 'lady soul'. 'chain of fools' - my god. only my maker witnessed the glory that was me singing this in the shower with a depth of feeling that has surely never been seen. 'natural woman' is so unbelievably gorgeous and transcendant. carol king is a great songwriter but there is such a genius in the quality of execution in all of her songs that only franklin could pull off. im walking out towards door - i've had the loveliest day, but there is a sting in my heart. mio dio. oy vey. how can one look oneself in the mirror after this day. i got dealt the beatdown, and the smackdown. lauras picking me up at 3:30, she took me to school. i got beat by the fucking dog pokemon. i got beat with my mains. i got beat with my secondaries. a high point in my fighting skill was with fucking nolimar. after all my trashtalk i got beat, and i got beat bad. order has been restored to the force. the perfect karmic ending to this evil villain story. im opening the door to easter road, and my finger gets caught on the door. i scrape through the brick wall but the whole door lands on my middle finger nail. it was really sore. really really really sore. im walking for ten minutes squeezing and sooking it with all my might and even the junkies are looking funny at me. i get home and take a proper look at this 23 and me result. mum was right. im unbearably white, but that's okay. but there is one thing she did fail to mention on the phone. 0.3% finnish baby. IM A FINN MENNÄÄN! KIPPIS! FINLANDIAAAAA! 🇫🇮

Soul’d out!

Shoutout Aretha

Önskar jag kunde sjunga som hon!

Fun and bubbly, heartwarming and true. Not exceptionally special but does what it does well.

Clapton played guitar on this album. He stinks. When it comes to classic albums like this where the singer is the focus, I'm always interested in the backing band. In some cases it's an iconic group of session musicians like The Wrecking Crew or something. But This one seems to have a pretty big mix. Which always makes me wonder who did the arrangements. Was it democractic/group effort? Or is the producer calling the shots? The producer of this album was Jerry Wexler, a journalist turned producer who coined the term "R&B". Thanks, Wikipedia.

Very enjoyable

Just a great soul album, one of the best. Oblivious great vocals. Great listen. 4. TBz 1. Chain of Fools 2. Good to Me as I Am to You 3. You Make Me Feel Like 4. Niki Hoeky

Yeah, it's expectedly good! Didn't realise she covered Groovin' which is a tune, and now I have a 4th version to love

The Queen of Soul showing her chops. You can't help but groove along.

Didn't know this is the album You Make Me Feel came from. It's a great record, she's has an amazing vocal performance. I'm more of a fan of the groovy songs on here.

F.S. : chain of fools 2ie. be good To me as I am to you Good!

La reina del soul. Un par de megahits. Un 4.

Good, fun music. Not a lot of songs.

The earth's not had many better voices but the heavy-handed arrangements bring her down, it must be said. It's hard not to like "People Get Ready" and "Groovin.'" And soul music's not had many more soulful cuts than "Ain't No Way" and, of course, the much better known "Natural Woman." Never Loved a Man is the better of the two records on this list.

I love this, its just feels nice and comforting to listen to

An excellent, easy listening album that makes you groove for a whole 28 minutes and 46 seconds.

was good

I like this album. Aretha Franklin has a great voice, and I enjoyed the funky backing to her singing. I wasn't a huge fan of her slower songs, but they weren't bad. My only problem with this album is that I can't pick out one single song, they all are very similar. No song made me go, "This is awesome!". 4/5 Favorite song: Niki Hokey Worst song: Good to Me as I Am to You

Love this. Incredible voice, great songs, good production.

Delicious

4/5 It seems as though I've become jaded since last week, and I've forgotten the Pavement days, cause I didn't quite think it lived up to my expectations. It was very good and I did enjoy it. She's a damn queen. I was transported, I was thinking about our relationship and singing along. I need to stop being so harsh. Lol. So, to keep up with the same rating scheme, I'm giving it 4 stars.

Fantastic. It's nice to get an album in a genre/style I enjoy so much and Aretha is probably the Queen of it. So many hits and classics. Will revisit.

Klassík. Óaðfinnanleg.

- "Queen of Soul" - I don't really have a taste for this era of soul - Stereo panning sounded cool! - Easy-listening - Almost feels gospel-like, although I didn't really listen to the lyrics. Favorite Song: Ain't No Way

Some real gems here. I’m talking about (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman and Ain’t No Way. The latter even brought it up an entire star. I love women. Hehe :)

La reina del soul. Un par de megahits. Un 4.

(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, chain of fools.

I don’t think I ever listened to a full album by her before. Her voice is quite good, which I already knew.

Although I've never been a big Aretha fan, I'd guess this is the period that would best suit my tastes - early sixties would have ben too tinny and the seventies would have been too syrupy. The cluster of songs led off by Chain of Fools has a nice rootsy feel. I'll round up since she's the GOAT.

No notes.

An exceptionally great album with end-to-end hits. Niki Hoakey was a favorite discovery.

It's not that I ever forget Aretha has a killer voice, but somehow it still always manages to leave me stunned at just how awesome it is. Honestly it doesn't really matter how good or bad the songs are here, she gives a vocal masterclass that can stop you in your tracks and demands attention. I quite like most of the songs too, as a bonus. This is like drinking fine wine or gazing upon a Da Vinci.

PREFS : Chain of Fools, People Get Ready, Niki Hoeky, (You Make Me Feel) Like A Natural Woman, (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone, Good To Me as I Am To You, Ain't No Way MOINS PREF : Money Won't Change You

Le Noël magique de Franklin

super fraîche

The OG. So many classics from one album. Excellent vocal performance too.

She has an electrifying element to her sound that makes me enjoy all the songs. Just wish there was a little more variety throughout, but overall fantastic. 4/5

The first time I heard of Aretha Franklin was probably Radio or in the Blues Brothers movies! Just great catchy music, very soulful, heartbreaking but also mending songs. Aretha had one, if not the best female voice in R&B/Soul music, she was one of the greatest! And this record is solid proof. Aretha's vocals are alone a worthy price of admission, but she's got a great band to back her up, and all instruments are mixed really good! Key tracks: Chain Of Fools, Money Won't Change You, People Get Ready, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone, Good To Me As I Am To You, Come Back Baby, Groovin', Ain't No Way. 8.5 out of 10

미간 피고 듣기 참 힘들다

Toda potência vocal do soul profundo.

What a voice

WONDERFUL

(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, chain of fools.

qué preciosura por dios! 9/10

What a voice, Lady Soul indeed! I do enjoy me some classic soul when I'm in the right mood for it and Aretha Franklin is among the best of her generation. The album is definitely shorter than it should be and a lot of the instrumentation is either a bit weak, or got lost in production. Those are my only criticisms though. Rounded down from 4.5

When the album started I was gonna be one of those people going against the pack, as with the first couple songs I didn't understand the more than four star average rating, but as the album went on I understood it a whole lot more, especially the last couple songs. Obviously Franklin's voice is magnificent, but as the album went on instruments came in to compliment the voice rather than just copy it and it became a nuch fuller album. Not perfect because of those first few songs, but I do get it now.

Great soul album, great voice

Powerful

Pretty sick album. Fantastic vocals. Super fun to listen to and sing along too. Best songs are 'Chain of Fools', 'People Get Ready', 'A Natural Woman', 'Sweet Sweet Baby', 'Groovin'" and 'Ain't No Way'. I mean pretty much every track is a banger. I've pretty criminally overlooked Aretha Franklin throughout my life so this is a good reminder of her talent. Recommend. 4/5

This is a great album. Tough to compete with Aretha Franklin. Chain of Fools is amazing, and You Make Me Feel is a classic. Groovin and Come Back Baby are surprisingly good.

This was a wonderful album with plenty of wonderful soulful tunes. I wouldn't usually go seeking out soul music like this, but I found myself enjoying it a lot! Favourite: Chain of Fools

Lovely voice and an all around good time. 4.

Enjoyed the warm and passion in Aretha's voice set over a wide set of enjoyable tracks. Natural Woman is definitely the highlight, but overall a really strong offering.

What can I say, Aretha Franklin was a generational talent, well deserving of the title "Queen of Soul." This album plays like a greatest hits album with "Chain of Fools'" "A Natural Woman," "Since You've Been Gone," "Ain't No Way," among others. I always loved Aretha's powerful voice, her vocal control, lyrical phrasing, and range. Incredible!

Canzoni molto famose, voce molto bella. Bello, bello, bello

What a force

Very solid soul album. Franklin's vocals are fantastic The instruments could be lowered to not clip

Aretha Franklin is an absolute queen. The songs of this album are all still classics even decades after their creation, and some of their messages even hold on today. Still, the soul genre as a whole is not something I like to consume everyday.

Soul is not really my thing but this was pleasant, some good tracks, strong vocals

Fantastic voice, awesome control. Lovely guitar. Really enjoyed listening

What's not to love about Aretha. One of the grearest

- beim zweiten Mal bestimmt besser - aber gute Musik für den Hintergrund, wenn man bissl was erledigen will L. -entspannt, ein oder zwei songs hatte ich glaube ich schonmal gehört

Wow! What a voice, and with interesting lyrics and music too.

good arethaaa

WOWEE LOVE 8/10

Loved it! So many great tunes and instrumentation

she truly is the queen of soul. unmatched vocals and unmatched talent. personal fave is money won’t change you

I like Never Loved A Man more than this one, but Aretha Franklin all-time excellent

Favourite song: Ain’t No Way

Groovy, funky, very easy listening and upbeat, I like it

What can I say? Incredible this was an actual album and not a best-of. What a time to be alive

There's so much emotion, passion, power and soul in Aretha's vocals. There isn't a bad song on this album - it's filled with timeless classics, and a surprising amount of variation in the instrumentation, too. I really want to give this 5 stars, but I'm going to settle on a 4 for the sole reason that - as much as I enjoy this style of music while listening to it, and Aretha Franklin is no doubt the epitome of this genre - it never occurs to me to give it a listen on a more regular basis. I can't quite put my finger on why that is - clearly a problem with me and not the music itself. Standout tracks: "Chain of Fools", "People Get Ready", "(You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman", "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone", "Good to Me as I Am to You", "Groovin'", "Ain't No Way"

THIS is what I would consider a top tier soul album. Everything on this album is well put together, Aretha's voice has so much emotion and power. This album has highs and lows, each instrumental fitting the vocals incredibly well. I love basically everything about this album and I see myself listening to a bunch of these tracks very frequently. 8/10

Love her voice and the stuff I've heard from her in movies, on the radio, etc but I don't think I've ever sat down and listened to an Aretha album straight through. This is some fantastic soul. She deserves her status 100%.

i love the sound of this album! very groovy 60s bops. my faves were (Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone and Good to Me as I Am to You

This one has a bigger sound than I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, thanks to the addition of horns and strings, but I think it's really similar in terms of quality. The songs are great and Arethas's voice is phenomenal, what more could you ask for?

Amazing voice, such a classic album. Queen of the soul :)

Music of Aretha Franklin is always surprising and I understand better the legacy around her now that I've listened to 2 full albums. Sound, instruments and musical arrangements from this era are always so nice. Really liked it.

Great album

Glorious voice... but you knew that

Great songs, not for every mood though

Slayyyyy

Queen of soul. Yes.

It's impossible not to be moved by her music, Soul music yeah you bet ass it is. Chain of fools.. her voice, that bass line damn nothing comes close to that these days. Good stuff.

There’s a reason she’s called the Queen of Soul. I'm not a big fan of soul but damn, this is a great record.

Some killer songs on this album, standards, wedding songs, feel good songs. This is one that I rate higher than a scale of if I'd put it on again, because I probably won't, but it's really good.

6/25/2022 - ALBUM #149 Today's Album: "Lady Soul" by Aretha Franklin - All of the years and years of praise and acclaim Aretha Franklin has gotten for her music still doesn't adequately describe just how celebrated her talent should be. This is an album that delivers on all fronts, to the point where I firmly believe if you isolated the vocals from this album, it would still be better than a vast majority of albums, but the fact that the soulful R&B instrumentals adequately back up Aretha's vocals is what really sells this record for me. I really love the flow of this record too, with a great mix of upbeat soul tracks and slower R&B ballads and the songwriting chops on display make every track feel like a unique expression of Aretha's soul while still maintaining a consistent quality and tone. The track A Natural Woman stands out as such a lovable and relatable track, with just such a stellar chorus. I also really enjoy the opener Chain of Fools for how upbeat and fun it is, welcoming the listener into the project. The tracks Good to Me as I Am to You and Ain't No Way are heartbreaking tracks about wanting to love someone and not having your love received or reciprocated is such a great premise for a track and I think both execute it very well. I am a tad disappointed in the closer of this album, being just an extended reprise of the intro song and having a super cheesy fade out, but I do think if you end the album on Ain't No Way, it feels like it has a really great and complete sequence of songs. Overall, this is a really soulful album with a ton of fun, upbeat tracks as well as some mellower cuts. Give this one a listen if you like an artist that can absolutely kill it on the mic. Highlights: Chain of Fools, People Get Ready, Niki Hoeky, A Natural Woman, Since You've Been Gone, Good to Me as I Am to You, Come Back Baby, Groovin', Ain't No Way. Score: 8/10 an incredibly soulful album from one of the best vocalists ever known

Hmmm. Accidentally seeing this was ranked among the all-time god-tier albums hasn't helped me here - I went in expecting a few more really classic songs, I guess. Still, Aretha was obviously an absolute force of nature as a singer and she sounds on top form. When the music gets all slow and soulful on songs like People Get Ready, Ain't No Way and Natural Woman, it's an almost religious experience.

I really like this album - good energy, great musical performances and astute song selection. But - and this may be heresy to some - I'm likely in a minority of one when I say that I don't particularly like Aretha Franklin's voice. Maybe because it played John the Baptist to a slew of wailers and caterwaulers, but it grates on me a little. Still - a fine record.

Queen of Soul, indeed. Her effort into her recordings/performances are such that she's seemingly fearless. She hits her notes to the maximum that she can, as though if she tried any harder she would miss it. This tenacity and passion does come through in listening to her sing and there is so much to respect here. "People Get Ready" is an old gospel favorite, heard time and again with multiple covers, spun for the good news. Aretha Franklin's contribution stand the test of time, and this is a clear candidate for 1001.

Never quite hits the five star despite a few stone cold classics

You can just tell from her voice that she's had so many dicks rammed down her throat. Impressive.

Wow, nothing but bangers on this one!

beautiful

Amazing voice. Classic tunes. Great band and backing singers. (3.7/5)

Lady Soul is the first whole album I've listened to from Aretha Franklin. I knew two tracks from this album ("Chain of Fools", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman"). Overall, this album was a fun listen. The music felt upbeat and lively. I particularly liked the horns on several of the tracks, but especially on "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone". I would recommend listenting to this album.

That voice......................... Amazing. Not my genre of choice but still enjoyed it. Fav songs: Money Won't Change You, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman), Good to Me as I Am to You, Come Back Baby Least liked songs: Niki Hoeky, People Get Ready Initial rating: 4/5

-Every nice soul/R&B with a powerful voice to give it some energy -"Chain of Fools," "Money Won't Change You," and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" were all very strong -She really gets to belting it out in "Good to Me as I am to You" -Also quite a few cool bass lines and other instrument parts throughout. I like the brass sections as well

How can you not love the queen of soul? Great album. 4 stars.

great album by Aretha Franklin.

aretha! how wonderful she is on this album. some aretha classics here, and they are noteworthy and legendary--absolutely worthy of praise! but the other songs that weren't hits are just as good. it takes a rare album to accomplish that. her voice was perfect as it was, but it was also perfect for soul. aretha and this album have upheld in the test of time. a charming record i would love to come back to.

Klok van een stem, maar niet 100% mijn muziek

Some big song on that one! I can get down to some Aretha!

Aretha's a great singer but half the tracks are pretty simply put together which does detract from the engagement.

Sounds like something kanye would sample

Great stuff 👍

One of the best singer of the history. Like a lot Soul music, moreover if it is sung by Aretha.

This album is a really nice album to listen to. Its easy on the ears, upbeat lyrics and most of all, its got a good tune. This is a great album to wake up to in the morning ensuring your happy starting your day. Enjoyed it a lot.

Awesome Aretha!

Aivan upea klassikko. Soulin kultaa. 4/5 Ei suurempia perusteluja. Hieno.

Chain of Fools on kova veto ja muutenkin hyvä levy!

Every single song is excellent.

Quite a pleasant album, gives me flying tiger vibes.

Dank album and such an incredible voice. I was amused to learn that what I thought was 'ch-ch-change' was actual "chain chain chain". TIL! Aretha is a Queen and this would be 5 stars if I was personally more of a soul fan.

So many hits on this one, yet Aretha manages to make each and every one sound new. That stunned me; This certainly deserves its place on the list. The thing that feels a little lacking is nuance in song form or vocal approach. But as an album playing to Franklin's strengths, it works very well.

Just amazing 🤩

Some absolute hits. It is hard not to enjoy Aretha.

I didn't think I'd heard this before but knew every song, knew every word. I honestly thought it was a greatest hits. My only minus would be it does feel like it is a collection of songs rather than a cohesive album.

Aretha Franklin was obviously an amazing singer with a very powerful voice, but I do feel that the melody is lost at times. I like the uptempo songs but some of the slower numbers did not really resonate with me. Instrumentally there is a focus on the bass lines which are very groovy. I listened on headphones and I liked the stereo separation but I reckon I would have enjoyed it more played loud on a hi-fi!

Quality from Aretha

Awesome voice, truly the queen of soul. Even manages to carry some of the less good tracks with ease

Liked it more than I anticipated I would. Fun and iconic songs. Doesn't overstay it's welcome. 4/5

Lovely voice great wintry album - and some classic songs to boot.

I really enjoyed listening to this. I will be adding this into my regular rotation!

Pretty Classic for Aretha

Excellent album

Gosh this is GOOD MUSIC. So classic, such talent in the voice, and some genre defining stuff here. Love it. 4*

Powerful & Smooth from start to finish

What a voice. Settles in nicely, perfect background music.

8/10 includes 'people get ready' Superb.

the name is as apt as i've ever seen. there's a lot to love on this album, and i love all of it. i only hope aretha's legacy is as big as her passion.

That's 'Retha Franklin, the queen of soul! Personally, I feel like the instrumentals (and recording quality) don't quite hold up to her fantastic voice, but it's still plenty to carry the album.

Mukavaa kuunneltavaa. R&B:stä en tykkää, mutta mustien naisten soul uppoaa jo paljon paremmin. Minun korvaan ei ollut mitään megahittejä, mutta yleisellä tasolla laatu oli tasaisen hyvää. Tykkäsin!

Soulful

What a brilliant album and absolute classics. Arethra did cover some of these though and I feel she gets the all the credit, 4 stars

Smooth, polished soul, instant standards, and the voice of Aretha. Beautiful.

What an awesome voice, and a great album with a number of her key hits on it.

I mean it’s Aretha!!

I know very little about Aretha Franklin which is probably to my shame I guess. Chain of Fools is one of those I've obviously heard before without giving it much thought, but man it's good. Those tremolo guitar bits are killer. Just been letting this wash over me a bit I guess, it's a great album. Incredible voice and the songs and arrangements are pretty much A+. Good start.

Aretha is een queen.

It never ceases to amaze me how one voice can be so powerful and yet so subtle. This album goes by really quick, but each song shows off Aretha's incredible voice and range 4/5

Classic Aretha songs…. 2 thumbs up

Such a beautiful voice. Each song had its own flair and for only being 30 mins long, I wonder what Drake or Kanye would think about this? I thoroughly enjoyed this entire album and especially chain of fools and natural woman.

Now we're talkin'! Aretha Franklin, I wondered when we'd get an album from her on the list. This is one of two that I have on vinyl, and I'm fairly certain the other one will pop up on here too. Her vocal talent is still one of one, and there are some legendary songs on here. Only thirty minutes too, no fat to trim. Love this one. Favorite tracks: Natural Woman, Chain of Fools, Come Back Baby, Good to Me as I Am to You, Groovin'. Album art: Nothing special, but I've seen this a lot so it's recognizable. The blue and orange title strip is nice, but yeah there's not much here to speak of. 4.5/5

Solo por ser Aretha

i love aretha <33

Tolles Album, aber nicht so zusammenhängend wahrzunehmen, deshalb nur 4

Really enjoyed this album!

Tremendous. Really enjoyed listening to this.

loved it

Aretha Franklin's voice is amazing.

// Favs: Ain't No Way Score: Strong 3 to Light 4

Obviously she's got the voice. Aretha Franklin highlights tend to feature her belting out powerful phrases, but I also really enjoyed the backing band on this one. Subtle and clever.

Great album, enjoyed every song

Man this one was good. I could listen to that bass groove in my left ear all day long.

First track serious classic 🙏 Natural Woman a classic too. I think a lot of wanna-be feminists need to listen to Good To Me As I Am To You, that's some powerful shit right there. So classic that it seems rude not to give it a 4.

Ms. Franklin is Queen for a reason.

Would buy on vinyl. More upbeat than I expected. Need to listen to again. Off to a good start

Good album would listen again

I knew she was a great singer, but I was surprised at how great of a writer she is. Fun fact: Eric Clapton is credited as the guitarist on 'Good to me as I am to you'.

Really enjoyed this. Wasn't expecting to. Full of soul and emotion. You make me feel is one of the best songs of all time

Typisch, Je weet wat je van dit album kan verwachten en het stelt niet teleur

Lady got pipes

A classic for a reason.

Its a nice album but not the best from Aretha

Pretty good, reminds of Mafia soundtrack

Short, sweet, and to the point.

Beautiful

Classic. Backup singers are amazing

Classic

Gran inicio con Chain of Fools. Voz potente, soul y R&B de libro, ejecutado a la perfección. Buenos cambios de beat entre canción y canción hacen que sea disfrutable de inicio a fin, sin sentirse monótono ni repetitivo. Sólido 4.

very good (:

Classic! Had a few songs almost anyone would recognize to this day.

Amazing voice. It's not something I would listen to often but it's great piece of music. Just not exactly my regular style.

¡Discazo!

Beautiful!!! What a voice!

Great Album! Never listened to her other than the few radio hits but she managed to cover several genres and has such a great voice.

Nothing like aretha franklin

Great discovery

She’s great.

Pipes.

Not bad music, not as much for me. Interesting musical ideas.

Great album!

did not listen fully, but intend to revisit at a later date

Short, sweet, and excellent. So many hits packed into a classic album. Really showcases not only her vocal talent, but the talent of the backing band as well

Really good and so many of these songs are famous

Chain of Fools! Really great record.

Dronningen af soul, vild vokal, flere kendte sange

So much soul. Best track: Groovin'

Legend

aaaah aretha <3 im only familiar with one song, i need more listens for this to appreciate each but all songs are always a good background

Amazing voice, what a national treasure she was.

Interesting album with guest appearance by Eric Clapton. Enjoyed it more than expected.

Enjoyable

Good vocals but a little too much Aretha for me. Understand her significance, the album was a little one ear out the other at a brisk 30

Pretty good, not my usual type of album I listen to - recognised a few of the songs from hearing them on the radio etc.
