Aretha got soul
A little Aretha Franklin is always good and more is better. This certainly applies to this. Easy 4 stars.
Favorite songs were Ain't No Way and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. Really fun to listen to the latter versus Carole King's version (also on this list) 4/5
Lovely and filled with classics.
This was just so good. It is always fun to listen to Aretha Franklin's vocals, and there was some incredible songwriting on this album. "Chain of Fools" is such a catchy song.

A nice one to get back on the bandwagon with. Aretha Franklin's voice is really the highlight of this album and i especially enjoyed "chain of fools". While nothing outstanding its still a very enjoyable album.

Insane voice. Album goes by in a flash, which is a good thing. Everything is concise, and as a result - perfectly hit. Lady Soul - A Grand start.
Def a great record - that backing band really did it for me. "The Swampers" knew how to do it! Also just like what the hell with Aretha's voice man... she is incredible. I would not call this 'my kind of music' really but she had me groovin' plenty of times. She just felt every move of every line of every song - never phones it in EVER.
It's truly great music. The main thing holding it back from 5 stars is the low production quality, which is impossible to ignore once you notice it. There's a fuzziness to every instrument's track during quieter moments. Could definitely do with a remaster. The songs, for the most part, also aren't super impressive. It definitely sounds like 60s music. Not a big fan of the album cover either, which is about as basic as you can make artwork containing Aretha Franklin's face. But that's where my criticism ends. The songs are performed spectacularly. Aretha's vocal is gorgeous, soulful, and full of spirit, all while letting the other instruments shine. Chain of Fools and A Natural Woman (you make me feeeeelll!!) are 60s soul classics, and the remaining 10 or so tracks are full of great moments too. Good to Me as I Am to You, with its slow, lilting feel and prominent bass, is a highlight. Ain't No Way, a jazzy, emotional piano-based ballad, is also fantastic. In terms of actual performance (not songwriting), pretty much every single track delivers. 4/5 Key tracks: Chain of Fools, A Natural Woman, Good to Me as I Am to You, Groovin', Ain't No Way

Again, another artist that I've never listened to a complete album of theirs. I appreciated this quite a bit. Might be good background music for certain tasks. Her voice and style is spectacular though! The emotion really comes out.

It’s hard to get away from the context here – Aretha is a legend and this is a legendary album. With Chain of Fools kicking things off, and the soaring soulfulness of A Natural Woman, Franklin’s vocals are so silky and on point, you might not notice Cissy Houston singing back up or Eric Clapton playing guitar on one of the tracks. I’m not sure I’d feel compelled to listen to the album in its entirety very often, but there’s no doubt it’s a key part of R&B history. Favourite track: (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman
This is a difficult one to rate, incredibly timeless and objectively a brilliant album but I find certain elements to be quite predictable and somewhat repetitive. The vocals are an absolute rush of energy and the instrumentation is gorgeous in many places. Overall it is full of life and a very enjoyable listen but not my personal type of music- though I feel it may grow on me in the future. Favourite Track: Ain’t No Way Specific Rating: 3.6/5

Hard to go wrong with Aretha’s voice! This album doesn’t include Respect, but did have Chain of Fools, which I prefer, twice. Unfortunately of the 14 tracks, 4 are bonuses which just repeat sings that are in earlier in the album. So it’s really only 10 distinct songs.

This is really good.. better than I expected
The greatest voice in soul at the vertiginous peak of her formidable power. Where is it coming from? How does she do it? One of those people whose talent does appear to be supernatural. This is an old fashioned singles and album-tracks album so I can’t quite feel a 5 coming on. That said there’s loads of great tracks on here, and if this album did have a theme it’s simply “sit back and smile as you get joyfully atomised by a force of nature”. Aretha is just rolling along like a river of soulful lava here. It’s not just the staggering range, power and flexibility of her voice either. Like Sinatra she is the perfect interpreter, the perfect conduit to get the song across to the audience, she embodies every song completely and effortlessly you just know that all the things in the song have happened to her personally (even if they haven’t). I think this is my favourite recommendation of an album I’ve not heard so far. Amen.
First time listening to a whole Aretha album. Chain of fools already starts so iconic. Incredible, clean voice. 4* only because it's not my type of album, but I have no complaints about it. Added to library. Highlights: chain of fools

Finally! An album to love!
This is a tough one to review. Her voice is undeniable. Classic and easy to listen to and understand why she's a name. Could be the day for me but I can't push myself to a five.

One of the greatest voices I've ever heard. There are better Aretha albums (Aretha Now, for one), but Lady Soul flows so well and is a great "clean your house" album. You WILL sing into a broom.

Great soul music, such a good voice
I could listen to Aretha sing anything and this album really showcases her talent extremely well. Somehow, I didn't like her interpretation of "People Get Ready" or "Groovin'" but everything else was a home run.

Aretha uses her voice in ways basically no one ends did or can currently. There's a reason she's so highly regarded, and this is a great display of her ability. Unlike some of these, this is a classic that holds up because her voice will never be anything less than incredible.
Aretha is great and I liked this album more than I never loved a man more than I love you but it didn’t blow me away
Good stuff. Perfectly serviceable musically; lyrics range from "perfectly okay" to "hey, that's pretty good"; but goddamn can that woman sing.

I couldn't find myself wanting to finish the album in one sitting, for some reason. Maybe it's season of life. However, each song is incredible and written with audible conviction. I'd never complain if I heard one of these songs in my daily life.
Probably her best album, it's shorter than previous album that had some big highlights but lulls after the A-Side, but this one keeps it shorter and is consistently great. A

I kind of wish I was around during this time. I feel like this is such feel-good music. This brought so many people together and gave so many people hope and made them see not only women but BIPOC in the spotlight. This is just music that you can dance to and feel good. It also reminds me of my childhood and even though I didn’t love having to watch Soul Train or I wanted to listen to this music, I can appreciate her voice and her messages and what it did during this time. She is an icon.

Its hard not to like aretha

I’m listening to this one early, so no track by track review. However, will update with top 3 and overall conclusion after finishing Update: This ~30 minute, 10 track album was tight from start to finish. It didnt feel as if there was any filler which you’d find in many albums today. The overall feeling elicited from this work is just a groovy one, perfect for the time it was released. Songs like People Get Ready, Come Back Baby, Ain’t No Way and Since You’ve Been Gone really shine on the first listen. The instruments powerfully enhance the already beautiful vocals and provide a stunning atmosphere of an album. Top 3: People Get Ready, Ain’t No Way, Chain of Fools Overall Rating: 8.5/10, 4.5/5
I guess “Natural Woman” is the most well-known song here. I only know “Chain of fools” because of the kid with the amazing voice who sings it in Scool of Rock. And “People Get Ready” from a Rod Stewart / Jeff Beck cover version. Anyway, I loved this album! It seemed like a great weekend morning funky chill soul album to listen to with a cup of coffee. I only had time for one listen but I look forward to returning to it.

So it turns out Eric Clapton (very bad) has contributed to something good (this album) after all. Good vibes all over, and powerful performances. Unlike so many of the other albums on the list, it respects my patience. 4.2
I went into this thinking it’s a 2. Maybe a 3. But Aretha is in fact the Queen of Soul. Chain of Fools and Natural Woman are obviously truly incredible songs. But everything in between is also fantastic. Her voice is second to none, the energy is more than expected. 8.4/10

Very good. Duffy and the estate of Amy Winehouse owes Aretha a lot of royalties. Loved the last track Ain't No Way and People Get Ready.

Can't go wrong with Aretha
Aretha is obviously a classic, and even as someone who doesn't care for R&B, I can't deny her genuine, authentic talent, and the songs are just all so solid. I personally prefer Carole King's version of (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. However, Franklin's version is also great. I'm not sure I'll go back to listen to this album again anytime soon, but it is deserving of all the praise.

If you like soul, then I completely get why Arethra is the absolute gold standard, or GOAT in the parlance of today's youth. I can take or leave soul, but her voice alone makes this a pretty beguiling listen. In short: glad I listened and experienced the album, unlikely to be playing it back again
Not many were better than Aretha when it came to singing. This album is pretty much all hits thanks to her amazing singing style. All in all she really could sing about anything and make it great. For my whole life I thought chain of fools was started by her singing change multiple times. The more you know. This is great and will always be great. 8.0/10

REALLY GOOD I LIKED IT. Not my usual genre but I quite enjoyed this. I was locked in while listening too. Might even add it to the rotation! My favorite might have been the closer "Ain't No Way" all though that could be recency bias.

I’m struggling with Aretha’s album. I was prepared to give it a 5 without needing to listen, but the production really bothered me. They could have done a much better job of showcasing her wonderful voice and not just her vocal extremes. And like a lot of stuff from that era, it’s way overproduced. You don’t need strings or horns to fill every empty space! Let her voice shine. She is the queen, after all.

This album surprised me. I have never been a fan of Motown necessarily. I generally stray away from it. I have always liked "Chain of Fools" and "Natural Woman." Both classics and the rest of this album was very nice as well! I'm glad to finally enjoy the majority of an album. I would like to give 3.5 if possible, but will lean towards 4.

Pretty nice easy to listen to
There is only so much Motown I can take and this is about just enough. There are 3 standards on this album but thankfully not the overplayed Respect. Whilst the blues musicianship on “Good to me as I am to you.” Is wonderful, Franklin’s voice is too pure for the genre. And she doesn’t groove, for me, on “Groovin’l But solid Motown from an era where albums contained too much filler.

The voice here is amazing, and (obvious take alert) the songs are generally amazing. I did find a few of the selections here a little too syrupy for my taste, but any album with Chain Of Fools and People Get Ready can't be bad.
Raw as fuck. If this was a 2023 release, then the production would drown out the voice. Not so in 1968. The vocals lead, with everything else added as backing only. It's great to hear the classic soul starting to stray in new directions. Jazz, rock, even a little country soul. Sexy as well.
Not much really needs to be said, because you can't go wrong with Aretha. Standouts are Natural Woman and Groovin'.

Seems like a crime to give her anything less than a 4, and I ain't breaking the law today.

A solid album, a powerhouse that exudes cool and soul from every pore. A voice for the ages and can see myself coming back for more.
Back to back Aretha Franklin albums, and this was much the better one.
A wonderful showcase of songwriting, talent and soul.
Aretha in the height of her career, with Eric Clapton on guitar. She gives an incredible performance, with a versatile loud and energetic voice capable of showing all sorts of emotions. It's an excellent display of Memphis-style soul, with the first half incorporating gospel (including her two hits), and the second half more focused on funk and blues. Impressed by the backing band and vocals, especially the funky bass lines. The cover "Groovin" was a pleasant surprise, and "Ain't No Way" was a romantic jazzy closer. No bad tracks, just a couple I didn't care for much like "People Get Ready."

The amazing thing about Aretha Franklin was that she could take a popular song by another artist, put her spin on it and create a wholly different song that is 10x better than the original. There are plenty of examples of that on this album. 4.5/5

She makes nearly every song (not written by her) her own. Wasn't sure how I would feel about her version of "Groovin'" but I found it to be really good. This is Aretha at her peak and it's hard to find better music than this. I would love to have this on vinyl.
Don't know if this is her best album but Chain of Fools, Ain't No Way, and Natural Woman all deserve to be on list of her best. Give me Aretha anyday, anyplace, anytime, and I'll be good.

There's no beating that voice - superb.
The Queen of Soul. Spent time with Jimmy Johnson and David Hood (The Swampers) Muscle Shoals Al. They helped bring Aretha’s sound to life after she lost her record deal in the 60’s. Went with Jimmy to the Premier of the Muscle Shoals movie and saw him get the Talladega keys to the City.

The queen of Soul/R&B - what a voice! Not necessarily the best selection of her songs, but it includes the incomparable "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", and her version of the gospel classic "People Get Ready" (later also covered by Bob Marley).

"people get ready" is a vibe! the thing about this genre is that i get bored of it v quickly if the song isn't like, exceptionally good/makes me feel things. the guitar in "good to me as i am to you" is so nice! edit: oh it's the one with eric clapton!! i can see myself in the 60s, my hair in a beehive, wearing a sundress, dancing to this album, maybe with a cigarette in my hand and a lover by my side. i looovee "ain't no way" i like the longer chain of fools better, i think. Though starting the album fast is a good choice. but i like that they included this one still.

Absolute classic. The power in Aretha’s voice is undeniable. The backing band is also great. Recorded with the legendary Muscle Shoals session musicians (Eric Clapton plays on a track too). There’s a documentary on YouTube about the Muscle Shoals studio, highly recommend watching so you can fully appreciate their greatness.
There will never be a voice like Aretha's - never a mood to match. She perfectly straddles the transition from gospel to 70s soul and brings the essence of spiritual devotion into the secular world seamlessly. Her voice is controlled while expansive and completely inspiring. It's such a complete expression it makes you want to punch walls. Having said that, I still found elements of this album a touch humdrum and incoherent. Aretha is a five star, life-changing singer but the album falls shy of its potential.
Solid. Wouldn't think I'd enjoy the "showy" vocals but they aren't showy. Just good.

Another great album. We are on a hot streak! Great voice across all songs, I really appreciate the range of powerful, energetic songs that flow well with more melodic, softer songs. Apart from Aretha holding down the songs with her voice, I think the rest of the band on this album deserve credit; especially the brass and backup singers. Wish I could give this 4.5 stars. Never really listened to Aretha Franklin much before. I understand where all of the respect for her comes from. Another reason I appreciate this 1001 albums challenge.
Clapton played guitar on this whoa. Chain of Fools and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman are the obvious standouts. Very short album but what a voice! I dig it.
Queen! The rating is just based on my taste and potential desire to listen to this again. I’m sure she actually deserves all 5.

Hard not to be engaged and entertained with this collection of tracks - a mixture of classics and moving vocal performances that left me wanting more with the whole record coming in at under half an hour. An easy one to add to the rotation - 4-and-a-half stars. Fave track: Ain’t No Way
I would get a lot of hate for saying her voice is a little overrated. She is great though
saturday the 13th it was on this day i found out im not jewish or italian. it was also on this fateful day i got my ass surgically removed and handed to me on a silver platter (much like the head of st john the baptist). because on this great and terrible day laura absolutely eviscerated me at smash. and this was the day i listened to 'lady soul'. 'chain of fools' - my god. only my maker witnessed the glory that was me singing this in the shower with a depth of feeling that has surely never been seen. 'natural woman' is so unbelievably gorgeous and transcendant. carol king is a great songwriter but there is such a genius in the quality of execution in all of her songs that only franklin could pull off. im walking out towards door - i've had the loveliest day, but there is a sting in my heart. mio dio. oy vey. how can one look oneself in the mirror after this day. i got dealt the beatdown, and the smackdown. lauras picking me up at 3:30, she took me to school. i got beat by the fucking dog pokemon. i got beat with my mains. i got beat with my secondaries. a high point in my fighting skill was with fucking nolimar. after all my trashtalk i got beat, and i got beat bad. order has been restored to the force. the perfect karmic ending to this evil villain story. im opening the door to easter road, and my finger gets caught on the door. i scrape through the brick wall but the whole door lands on my middle finger nail. it was really sore. really really really sore. im walking for ten minutes squeezing and sooking it with all my might and even the junkies are looking funny at me. i get home and take a proper look at this 23 and me result. mum was right. im unbearably white, but that's okay. but there is one thing she did fail to mention on the phone. 0.3% finnish baby. IM A FINN MENNÄÄN! KIPPIS! FINLANDIAAAAA! 🇫🇮

Fun and bubbly, heartwarming and true. Not exceptionally special but does what it does well.
Clapton played guitar on this album. He stinks. When it comes to classic albums like this where the singer is the focus, I'm always interested in the backing band. In some cases it's an iconic group of session musicians like The Wrecking Crew or something. But This one seems to have a pretty big mix. Which always makes me wonder who did the arrangements. Was it democractic/group effort? Or is the producer calling the shots? The producer of this album was Jerry Wexler, a journalist turned producer who coined the term "R&B". Thanks, Wikipedia.

Didn't know this is the album You Make Me Feel came from. It's a great record, she's has an amazing vocal performance. I'm more of a fan of the groovy songs on here.

Good, fun music. Not a lot of songs.
The earth's not had many better voices but the heavy-handed arrangements bring her down, it must be said. It's hard not to like "People Get Ready" and "Groovin.'" And soul music's not had many more soulful cuts than "Ain't No Way" and, of course, the much better known "Natural Woman." Never Loved a Man is the better of the two records on this list.

I like this album. Aretha Franklin has a great voice, and I enjoyed the funky backing to her singing. I wasn't a huge fan of her slower songs, but they weren't bad. My only problem with this album is that I can't pick out one single song, they all are very similar. No song made me go, "This is awesome!". 4/5 Favorite song: Niki Hokey Worst song: Good to Me as I Am to You

4/5 It seems as though I've become jaded since last week, and I've forgotten the Pavement days, cause I didn't quite think it lived up to my expectations. It was very good and I did enjoy it. She's a damn queen. I was transported, I was thinking about our relationship and singing along. I need to stop being so harsh. Lol. So, to keep up with the same rating scheme, I'm giving it 4 stars.
Fantastic. It's nice to get an album in a genre/style I enjoy so much and Aretha is probably the Queen of it. So many hits and classics. Will revisit.
