Reviews (page 9 of 13)

I mean it’s Aretha Franklin. She’s chill

Notable tracks: (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Chain of Fools, Niki Hoeky, Come Back Baby, Ain’t No Way

delightful album! it's not quiiite as hit parade as the other Aretha album we had, where it truly felt like every other song was a hit song. But you've got some stunners! And any day I get to hear Aretha sing is going to be 50% brighter. What a treat. Incredible voice. 4/5

8/10 There’s not much you need to do when Aretha is in her pomp: point her at a song and she will do the rest brilliantly. Here the songs and arrangement are good too, so it is an overall winner When she steps on the gas her voice is breathtaking Best: A Natural Woman

Loved it! Straight on the "to buy" list

Klassiker des Souls.

You’d think this was her “best of” album, but nope.. just that amazing of an album! Love Aretha, and that fact her name sounds sexual..

Of course, an absolute classic. A bit too short? Maybe. A bit rough around the edges? I can see that argument. But otherwise, this is an absolutely fantastic album from start to finish.

Lovely album, You Make Me Feel is obviously the classic song on this but Chain of Fools was the highlight of the album for me

Aretha’s 12th studio album. Some classics on this one like chain of fools and natural woman, and a few I discovered that I really love, like her cover of people get ready, originally by the impressions. Can’t go wrong with Aretha.

NOW THAT'S A VOICE!!!1

Nice R&B vocals!

1968 must’ve been a hell of a year to go the record store. Tough to argue anyone’s ever had a better voice than Aretha, but I’m not sure if most of these songs take full advantage of it. It’s one of the rare albums that’s too short and some of the songs are under 3 mins and don’t totally feel finished.

4.0 Very solid but pretty short. Can always go for more Aretha

This had great great energy from start to end. The production was really tight too allowing the instrumentation moments to shine without taking away from Arethas and her vocals.

beautiful

She was cookin.

Unfortunately this [REALLY GREAT] website seems to have lost everything I had written for todays album, this makes me sad as I had actually written a bit more than I had initially expected for this. To summarize my initial thoughts, this was an unexpected surprise for a genre I think almost everyone is familiar with but is not something most people from our generation would consider themselves 'fans' of. 'A Natural Woman' is the song I am both most familiar with as well as it being by far my favorite track of the album. Lastly I wanted to emphasize how well her vocals complimented the energy of the instruments. Using a comparison with Dexy's Midnight Runners from last week and how I thought the stroke the caught on live mic from the vocalist was a detriment to the rest of the album and did not match. This album was the complete opposite. Despite my positivity though I am not sure where to put this with my final rating, as good as it is I do wonder if this is something I would regularly listen to, as I feel like that should be criteria for giving something a perfect rating.

Wow, the lady from the Blues Brothers had a great solo career, that's awesome. Ain't No Way, Chain of Fools, Money Won't Change You, A Natural Woman, all bangers. Niki Hoeky is a bit weaker compared to the other hitters. I think I would have enjoyed going to church more if they busted out numbers like People Get Ready. Aretha Franklin is one of the best to ever do it, without a doubt. She only got better after this album particularly with a higher calibre backing ensemble, but this album is strong overall nonetheless.

lately ive been enjoying rnb a lot more than soul but i listened to a fair amount back in the day and the queen of soul always made it into my playlists. at first i was going to point out individual tracks and why i liked them but then i realized thats kind of pointless. every song is really good for both their own reasons and the same reasons. that being that the instrumentality is obviously great and aretha franklin sings in all of them. its just a good release, one if the ones that would actually be made worse by my feeble minded attempts to review or critique it because its coming from someone that just is good music. in all her interviews she talks about the love and joy of making music instead of the dumb boring technicalities most artists talk about and thats a good indicator as any that she really understands what makes good music good. anyway go listen to this shit.

BIG FAN finally some good ass soul. The voice and the ability this woman has to make yah feel is great. I enjoyed most of the songs on this album but even the ones i wasn't head over heels for i still didn't mind because Aretha was singing it. 4/5.

Va be è Aretha

Aretha! The album title says it all “Lady Soul” is the perfect title for this amazing voice.

It's Aretha and the album starts with Chain of Fools? Count me in! Could have done without Eric Clapton's "blues" guitar wanking on "Good to Me as I Am to You" but that's a me problem.

Really good album!

Yes very nice

Really nice. Not quite a 5 for me but I found myself really enjoying this.

The queen of soul baby. Love Aretha. Love her voice

A wonderfully paced and executed album. Every song is unique but adds to the whole. Aretha's voice is spectacular.

Rip the goat

rip queen

I am glad to see that the waitress from The Blues Brothers has so many great songs. :)

The OG of Soul! Even this 4+star review seems dis-R-E-S-P-E-C-T-ful!

All class all the time. Standouts like Chain of Fools and People Get Ready and Natural Woman deservedly lionized. When was the last time you heard this Groovin?

Classic

Great! But I have to be in the mood for the Queen of Soul. Fabulous when I am but sometimes I just feel it’s a little tedious.

This is a fantastic example of Aretha's prowess and power and exemplifies why she's part of music royalty. I'll admit, I sometimes find her voice can get a bit shrill when she's really going for it, but I didn't experience that at all on this record.

3.9. What a talent

Classic. Don't like Chain of Fools.

La Queen

Eh va be è Aretha

The first two songs were great, then it tampered off just to get better at Respect. Overall good.

One of the greats.

Good album.

Really good album with memorable vocals.

pretty good

(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, chain of fools.

It is really good, some really strong songs, I liked it more than the other album of hers on this list. Still not gonna be a go to for me but was good to listen/know about this one. Will I listen to again: 25%

This album has two killer songs (Chain of Fools and You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman). The rest of the tracks are OK, but Aretha has a 5-star voice, so it pulls it up for me.

The thing with only being exposed to an artist late in their career is that you tend to only hear their 2 or 3 biggest hits. So, it was good to hear Aretha's amazing vocals on other songs... even if the songs themselves and production don't hold up as well.

Could use a remaster, but nothing to complain about with Aretha!

Solid, front to back. Worth a listen.

Another very easily likeable record. Just pleasant to listen to.

Classic for a reason. Not something it’s typically think to put on myself - and some of the impact is dampened a bit by exposure - but it holds up very well. Favorite track: Chain of Fools

#283. It's Aretha Franklin. 4/5: great.

incredible voice

Amazing voice and songwriting

This album is great with a lot of standouts and familiar music that was fun to listen to going up and back down Mt Etna

Was surprised at how listenable this was and not just “old- time classic” you have to take like medicine. Good for the ride from Taormina to Palermo.

it was nice idk sorry i did not feel overly passionate

Riktiga bangers här! Favoriter: • Chain of fools • Niki Hoeky • (you make me feel like) A natural woman Krävdes att lyssna några gånger för att verkligen komma in i låtarna men de var lättlyssnade.

Favoritlåtarna va Niki hoeky, groovin och people get ready

Soul två dagar i rad. Jag klagar inte. Första låten en solklar 5a och rösten är 5+. Det rullar på med bra låtar. People Get Ready t ex. Det blir 4a i betyg

Det är skönt. Inte favoritgenren. Lite snabbare än dusty (som jag nog diggade lite mer), men ändå i samma ball park.

Timeless

7/10 Aretha is such a good singer but not my vibe

Wonderful voice. Great to listen to.

Classic Soul, muy disfrutable.

Excelentes coros, instrumentación, voz asombrosa. Buenísimo, me encanta

This is excellent, so filled with emotions and soul. But she kind of butchers People Get Ready, it has to be said.

Such a beautiful voice. Easy listening.

Ooh, definitely an album I'll have to return to the future. I can imagine myself getting some good relistens out of this one and appreciating it more and more each time.

Straight grooves - 8/10

I remember my high school math teacher played the Chain song when we learned about the chain rule. Felt pretty much the same about this as the last Aretha Franklin album.

kinda whack how we r getting two Aretha Franklin albums so close together. I haven't listened to the other one yet tho. good but not something I see myself listening to all the time.

I feel like the soul albums are so much more consistent than the rock albums. They’re just usually good. Especially when it’s Aretha Franklin. 8.5/10

8/10 - I do not know if I was just in a bad mood or if these songs were better than the other Aretha Franklin album but I enjoyed these songs so much more. I felt like the music as a whole was simply better.

Liked this a little more than the Aretha Franklin album from a week ago. Again, just a really good album

be.you.ti.ful. gosh this woman has some lungs on her! So much talent.

My 200th album! Her voice is so impressive, she just kills every song on here. I'm not sure I'd ever go out of my way to listen to this but it's just so impressive.

No es el tipo de musica que elijo escuchar frecuentemente. Pero es una experiencia muy llevadera, el album se deja escuchar muy facilmente y tiene la posibilidad de plantear canciones con melodias mas tristes y otras alegres.

Wow. Hadn't heard this one before. Rock solid, classic Atlantic session packed with hits!

Quite a classic album, and a refreshing change of pace from recent selections from the collection. Given how ubiquitous many of the song on this album have become, I find it hard to imagine what an album like this must have felt like when it first came out. But gauging by its chart performance, I'm guessing it was an instant classic. And rightly so, as she sings her own as well as other people's songs with a lot of style and soul. It's a shame that the songs are so short, as you just get started with them when they end soon afterwards; I'm guessing that was probably a consideration for the radio, sadly. It was nice with the CD reissue, though, that they released an unedited version of "Chain of Fools"; I wish there were more unedited versions, honestly.

Chain of Fools and Groovin are the standouts here. Never been a fan of Natural Woman.

I like it but can only handle so much at one time.

Not my mood, but recognize gratness

soulful goodness

what a voice she had. annoyed me that so many of them faded out though

the girl can sing, thats for damn sure. Aretha Franklin certainly deserves her spot in history. there are a couple of her classics on this album, but i think everything on here is really good. this would be a great vinyl record to own, and just have playing around the house.

Very good 👍

Definitely a classic- it was wonderful listening to this while I worked. I don’t know if any of the songs necessarily stood out to me, but they came together to create a fantastic atmosphere.

This album has some very famous songs on it. I enjoyed it a lot, the songs were really groovy and she has an awesome voice. It's her twelfth studio album, which is nuts. My favorite songs were "Money Won't Change You" "Since You've Been Gone" and "Come Back Baby". 8/10

Some classic R n B soul music

Beautiful voice

good album, amazing voice, really catchy short tracks that were fun to listen to, few sounded pretty similar but was good overall

Really enjoyed it...especially after some of the duds we had to listen to earlier in the week.

Never heard album before, but have heard some of the songs. Listened 2x. Solid album with a few classics on it. Aretha is great. "Get hip to the consultation of the boolawee"

Classic that still holds up well.

Great album, through and through. A few gems I'm not as familiar with alongside iconic bangers such as Chain of Fools, People Get Ready, Natural Woman, ect. Lots of raw, gritty emotion and early touches of funk throughout. Love that it's not overly-polished. This one sounds fantastic on wax!

Played this and Aretha-adjacent jams all day. Was a good day.

It's got some of the big hits for sure. I've never been enamored with Aretha Franklin's deepcuts for some reason, which prevents me from giving it 5 stars.

Not just “Lady Soul.” That’s some kind of minor member of the court of soul, vying for the attention of the elites. But Aretha vies for nothing. She’s the queen. Beyond the known hits, I dug “Niki Hoeky.”

The voice. The Voice. THE VOICE!!! She’s incredible and the songs were more interesting on this album as compared to I Never Loved A Man The Way I Loved You.

some of the greatest

8.5/10

Holy hell, what a voice. There’s so many classics on this album, and even though I like some versions more than Aretha’s, it’s still a great listen. Her vocals on Ain’t No Way were incredible.

Great album with chains, natural Plus Motown in general is just my vibe

One of the best things from this project is my appreciation for soul music. It really speaks to me. And Aretha Franklin has such an angelic voice. It’s just beautiful

Great album!

Love this one.

What can you say but beautiful! This voice can move a room and the arrangements are top notch. The first half of the album is astounding. Once you get to the b side, it’s still all there but something is just missing and I can’t put my finger one. Great album but a few tracks away from 5 stars for me.

It's hard to rate this because her voice is obviously incredible, and the two most popular songs on here are undeniable classics. The rest though, while not bad, doesn't hit that same quality level or really get close to it. I feel this way about a lot of these old soul albums. At least there's a good bit of energy to some of the tracks.

Good sunny day soul

listened to again still slaps

Aretha got soul

A little Aretha Franklin is always good and more is better. This certainly applies to this. Easy 4 stars.

Favorite songs were Ain't No Way and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. Really fun to listen to the latter versus Carole King's version (also on this list) 4/5

Lovely and filled with classics.

This was just so good. It is always fun to listen to Aretha Franklin's vocals, and there was some incredible songwriting on this album. "Chain of Fools" is such a catchy song.

*love* aretha. no notes.

I always wish there were like three more songs on this album

I feel like the mixing on this album was weird but I still liked it, I listened to the mono version of Ain’t no way and it was better than the stereo one

A classic album. Not one i'd listen to but I respect the craft. I liked the cover of Groovin'.

A nice one to get back on the bandwagon with. Aretha Franklin's voice is really the highlight of this album and i especially enjoyed "chain of fools". While nothing outstanding its still a very enjoyable album.

undeniably powerful singer

The queen for a reason

Obviously Aretha's vocals are the star, but this album is funky, swing-y, and generally a really fun listen.

Very enjoyable in that 60s R&B way. Not enough standout songs to reach the top.

Classic! Great background listening. All good stuff.

What a voice! Great to listen to

Absolute classics by Aretha Franklin

This album lives up to its name. This album is soulful as heaven and Franklin puts her own soul on every track. Enjoyable listen.

Aretha being Aretha

Great Aretha

Insane voice. Album goes by in a flash, which is a good thing. Everything is concise, and as a result - perfectly hit. Lady Soul - A Grand start.

Def a great record - that backing band really did it for me. "The Swampers" knew how to do it! Also just like what the hell with Aretha's voice man... she is incredible. I would not call this 'my kind of music' really but she had me groovin' plenty of times. She just felt every move of every line of every song - never phones it in EVER.

It's truly great music. The main thing holding it back from 5 stars is the low production quality, which is impossible to ignore once you notice it. There's a fuzziness to every instrument's track during quieter moments. Could definitely do with a remaster. The songs, for the most part, also aren't super impressive. It definitely sounds like 60s music. Not a big fan of the album cover either, which is about as basic as you can make artwork containing Aretha Franklin's face. But that's where my criticism ends. The songs are performed spectacularly. Aretha's vocal is gorgeous, soulful, and full of spirit, all while letting the other instruments shine. Chain of Fools and A Natural Woman (you make me feeeeelll!!) are 60s soul classics, and the remaining 10 or so tracks are full of great moments too. Good to Me as I Am to You, with its slow, lilting feel and prominent bass, is a highlight. Ain't No Way, a jazzy, emotional piano-based ballad, is also fantastic. In terms of actual performance (not songwriting), pretty much every single track delivers. 4/5 Key tracks: Chain of Fools, A Natural Woman, Good to Me as I Am to You, Groovin', Ain't No Way

This was great to listen to. Not sure it'd be in my regular rotation but still a phenomenal album.

Good, need another listen as cant really remember. I know I enjoyed it. 3.8

I'm not sure Aretha has bad songs, like any of them.

Again, another artist that I've never listened to a complete album of theirs. I appreciated this quite a bit. Might be good background music for certain tasks. Her voice and style is spectacular though! The emotion really comes out.

Pleasant to the ears :) cool a black some power house pit this out in midst of Covil rights movement 1968

I liked this one another really fun listen

Really enjoyed - incredible voice, great catchy songs and very tight album

Beautiful voice and some great songs.

It's relaxing and soothing but it's not really my genre.

3.5 per track. Good stuff!

I enjoyed this a good amount.

It’s hard to get away from the context here – Aretha is a legend and this is a legendary album. With Chain of Fools kicking things off, and the soaring soulfulness of A Natural Woman, Franklin’s vocals are so silky and on point, you might not notice Cissy Houston singing back up or Eric Clapton playing guitar on one of the tracks. I’m not sure I’d feel compelled to listen to the album in its entirety very often, but there’s no doubt it’s a key part of R&B history. Favourite track: (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman

This is a difficult one to rate, incredibly timeless and objectively a brilliant album but I find certain elements to be quite predictable and somewhat repetitive. The vocals are an absolute rush of energy and the instrumentation is gorgeous in many places. Overall it is full of life and a very enjoyable listen but not my personal type of music- though I feel it may grow on me in the future. Favourite Track: Ain’t No Way Specific Rating: 3.6/5

Beatiful, classic souls music right here. “Chain of Fools” is probably my favorite on this album. Amazing vocals by Aretha, great instrumentation; a very enjoyable listen. Four stars!

Good voice

Aretha Franklin is fantastic as always Top tracks: Chain of Fools, Niki Hoeky, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman

The QUEEN.

So good

What a voice!!

What. A. Voice.

It was great to hear Areatha Franklin again. A wonderful voice. Thrilling music.

This is far from my era or genre but Aretha makes it hard not to take notice.

Very good. Mix of soulful blues and Motown vibes. No wonder she's the Queen of Soul Highlights -Chain of Fools -Money Won't Change You -Good to Me as I Am to You

Hard to go wrong with Aretha’s voice! This album doesn’t include Respect, but did have Chain of Fools, which I prefer, twice. Unfortunately of the 14 tracks, 4 are bonuses which just repeat sings that are in earlier in the album. So it’s really only 10 distinct songs.

Loved this energy! Makes me want to listen to more Aretha in my regular rotation

This is really good.. better than I expected

The greatest voice in soul at the vertiginous peak of her formidable power. Where is it coming from? How does she do it? One of those people whose talent does appear to be supernatural. This is an old fashioned singles and album-tracks album so I can’t quite feel a 5 coming on. That said there’s loads of great tracks on here, and if this album did have a theme it’s simply “sit back and smile as you get joyfully atomised by a force of nature”. Aretha is just rolling along like a river of soulful lava here. It’s not just the staggering range, power and flexibility of her voice either. Like Sinatra she is the perfect interpreter, the perfect conduit to get the song across to the audience, she embodies every song completely and effortlessly you just know that all the things in the song have happened to her personally (even if they haven’t). I think this is my favourite recommendation of an album I’ve not heard so far. Amen.

First time listening to a whole Aretha album. Chain of fools already starts so iconic. Incredible, clean voice. 4* only because it's not my type of album, but I have no complaints about it. Added to library. Highlights: chain of fools

banger

Not my style. But classic

ICONIC. So many hits from this album. Truly one of the GOATs of soul. Will be back 4/5

Aretha Franklin Lady Soul 76.53 Chain Of Fools(82) Money Won't Change You(79) People Get Ready(82) Niki Hoeky(60) (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman(89) Since You've Been Gone (Sweet Sweet Baby)(77) Good To Me As I Am To You(69) Come Back Baby(56) Groovin'(67) Ain't No Way(89)

Finally! An album to love!

This is a tough one to review. Her voice is undeniable. Classic and easy to listen to and understand why she's a name. Could be the day for me but I can't push myself to a five.

Classic and timeless. Never listened to most of the songs on this album.

Powerful voice and also a great sounding album overall

So soul so jazzy

Obviously she has an amazing voice, and there were more groovy and upbeat songs than slow and sad ones, which I appreciate

A classic from the Queen of Soul. Every track is unmistakably Aretha. The hits are the standouts but it’s a solid listen throughout.

One of the greatest voices I've ever heard. There are better Aretha albums (Aretha Now, for one), but Lady Soul flows so well and is a great "clean your house" album. You WILL sing into a broom.

Ég er algjör blúsbróðir og myndi vel vilja hlusta á hana skamma kúnna á dinerum hvaða dag sem er. Þetta er plata sem ég mun setja aftur á af og til, til að komast í stuð.

A goddamn feast for my ears Niki Hoeky - the guitar in this is funkayyy Groovin - very groovy Good to Me As I Am to You - soul music at its best Ain't No Way - miss Carolyn Franklin the artist you are I cant even choose a least favorite song, I liked them all. Favorite is probably Niki Hoeky

Just a classic album

Certainly soulful and a great set of pipes.

Classic. Her voice is so strong and undeniable. Some pretty huge songs on here too. Rightfully dubbed the Queen of Soul. 4.5

Really good album, never listened to it. Will definitely listen to it a few times a year now.

Great soul music, such a good voice

I could listen to Aretha sing anything and this album really showcases her talent extremely well. Somehow, I didn't like her interpretation of "People Get Ready" or "Groovin'" but everything else was a home run.

1. 4.9 2. 4 3. 3.8 4. 4 5. 4.9 6. 3.8 7. 4.4 8. 4.4 9. 4.2 10. 4.5

Aretha uses her voice in ways basically no one ends did or can currently. There's a reason she's so highly regarded, and this is a great display of her ability. Unlike some of these, this is a classic that holds up because her voice will never be anything less than incredible.

Aretha is great and I liked this album more than I never loved a man more than I love you but it didn’t blow me away

Good stuff. Perfectly serviceable musically; lyrics range from "perfectly okay" to "hey, that's pretty good"; but goddamn can that woman sing.

aretha e ju riktigt bra

Chain of Fouls, You Make Me Feel Like - what can I say, the Queen of Soul, so flawless and magical

I couldn't find myself wanting to finish the album in one sitting, for some reason. Maybe it's season of life. However, each song is incredible and written with audible conviction. I'd never complain if I heard one of these songs in my daily life.

Probably her best album, it's shorter than previous album that had some big highlights but lulls after the A-Side, but this one keeps it shorter and is consistently great. A

Respect!

The Queen.

Not my go-to genre, but a few good songs on this album

Obviously amazing. But think it would be disingenuous to give a 5 as I’m unlikely to listen again. Simpsons reference: Yes

Very good.

Iconic. I enjoyed the album more after watching the documentary about her as well as the biopic.

Some really great songs here.

I kind of wish I was around during this time. I feel like this is such feel-good music. This brought so many people together and gave so many people hope and made them see not only women but BIPOC in the spotlight. This is just music that you can dance to and feel good. It also reminds me of my childhood and even though I didn’t love having to watch Soul Train or I wanted to listen to this music, I can appreciate her voice and her messages and what it did during this time. She is an icon.

💖 come back baby 🗣️ 8️⃣

Great! Short listen but quality throughout.

Pretty good for background listening, would skip more times than not.

They call her the Queen of Soul for a reason. Listened to it twice!

A great time

favorite tracks: Chain of Fools, Niki Hoeky Awesome album everything was enjoyable

Aretha cries power

7.5/10 - 4/5 Standout song: Come Back Baby. It has amazing energy, so fun. The Queen of Soul. Some recognizable classics on the album. Varied energy, some slow, 1 real bop (Come Back Baby).

Its hard not to like aretha

Just delightful.

I’m listening to this one early, so no track by track review. However, will update with top 3 and overall conclusion after finishing Update: This ~30 minute, 10 track album was tight from start to finish. It didnt feel as if there was any filler which you’d find in many albums today. The overall feeling elicited from this work is just a groovy one, perfect for the time it was released. Songs like People Get Ready, Come Back Baby, Ain’t No Way and Since You’ve Been Gone really shine on the first listen. The instruments powerfully enhance the already beautiful vocals and provide a stunning atmosphere of an album. Top 3: People Get Ready, Ain’t No Way, Chain of Fools Overall Rating: 8.5/10, 4.5/5

I guess “Natural Woman” is the most well-known song here. I only know “Chain of fools” because of the kid with the amazing voice who sings it in Scool of Rock. And “People Get Ready” from a Rod Stewart / Jeff Beck cover version. Anyway, I loved this album! It seemed like a great weekend morning funky chill soul album to listen to with a cup of coffee. I only had time for one listen but I look forward to returning to it.

Beautiful.

Plenty of hits… surprised how many of the songs I knew

Good stuff

Very good, but the "hits" sound stale due to being in commercials

So it turns out Eric Clapton (very bad) has contributed to something good (this album) after all. Good vibes all over, and powerful performances. Unlike so many of the other albums on the list, it respects my patience. 4.2

I went into this thinking it’s a 2. Maybe a 3. But Aretha is in fact the Queen of Soul. Chain of Fools and Natural Woman are obviously truly incredible songs. But everything in between is also fantastic. Her voice is second to none, the energy is more than expected. 8.4/10

Aretha lavede simpelthen nogle KÆMPE bangers på det her tidspunkt, vildt at denne og Aretha Now blev udgivet samme år

Virkelig god plade, med mange gode sange!

Almost a ez 5. Chain of Fools is amazing. Great vocals and great groove. Ez 4.5

Excellent vocals

Powerful. The tune "You Make Me Feel" still sounds like a commercial but I could hear the soul coming through the rest of the album.

Very good. Duffy and the estate of Amy Winehouse owes Aretha a lot of royalties. Loved the last track Ain't No Way and People Get Ready.

Love Aretha

The Queen of soul for a reason, beautiful voice.

First time I've taken time to listen to Aretha. I was not expecting to enjoy this, but here I am loving this album. 4/5

Didn’t expect to love it as much as I did

Awesome listen, feels like it should be on when you are cooking something good and got friends over.

Incredible artist.

very good

Typical soul voice for her time.

There is a reason she is the queen of soul. Worth diving into the deep tracks for some real bangers.

Can't go wrong with Aretha

Aretha is obviously a classic, and even as someone who doesn't care for R&B, I can't deny her genuine, authentic talent, and the songs are just all so solid. I personally prefer Carole King's version of (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. However, Franklin's version is also great. I'm not sure I'll go back to listen to this album again anytime soon, but it is deserving of all the praise.

What a voice! Ah-mazing!

3.7/5 A couple of stellar hits and some medium stuff. Best track: (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman

The Queen of Soul never dissapoints.

Aretha... the queen of soul... enuf said.

Dusty fan myself, but this is class. Her voice is obviously incredible, the songs are nicely put together. Doesn't quite do enough to make a 5, but it's a safe 4.

some absolutely gnarly soul bangers from one of the best to ever do it. Though the b-sides on this one are noticeably weaker... 4/5

She has a great voice and the music is pretty good. I don't have a lot to say, but my experience with this album was a very pleasant one. My favourite song was Groovin'.

Some set of pipes

Not my thing but it's very hard to ignore pure class

I like Aretha

Loved this

What a voice. The band/ backing vocals add to every song. Even the songs I've never heard are great. The tone on every instrument is incredible.

Pretty cool

Iconic voice, some great songs on here, way ahead of its time

FAVO: A Natural Woman, Since you've been gone, Groovin'

Was Groovin’ listening to this one. People Get Ready to listen to this one.

Apart from the religion really like it

A classic.

Old school love music

Really good vibes. Funk, soul and gospel. Aretha has an amazing voice and pacing.

Cool & School

So this is pretty awesome Top to bottom great songs and fabulous vocals (obviously)

Classic Aretha, nothing much to fault here but not necessarily her most engaging all the way through

If you like soul, then I completely get why Arethra is the absolute gold standard, or GOAT in the parlance of today's youth. I can take or leave soul, but her voice alone makes this a pretty beguiling listen. In short: glad I listened and experienced the album, unlikely to be playing it back again

Not many were better than Aretha when it came to singing. This album is pretty much all hits thanks to her amazing singing style. All in all she really could sing about anything and make it great. For my whole life I thought chain of fools was started by her singing change multiple times. The more you know. This is great and will always be great. 8.0/10

We talkin' Aretha. We talkin' the mf queen of soul. RIP

Great grooves, short and sweet album. Fantastic vocals as would be expected

A classic of course. I didn't find the album tracks hit as hard as the hits.

REALLY GOOD I LIKED IT. Not my usual genre but I quite enjoyed this. I was locked in while listening too. Might even add it to the rotation! My favorite might have been the closer "Ain't No Way" all though that could be recency bias.

chain chain chaaiiinnn chain of fools money won't change you people get ready niki hoeky groovin' ain't no way

I’m struggling with Aretha’s album. I was prepared to give it a 5 without needing to listen, but the production really bothered me. They could have done a much better job of showcasing her wonderful voice and not just her vocal extremes. And like a lot of stuff from that era, it’s way overproduced. You don’t need strings or horns to fill every empty space! Let her voice shine. She is the queen, after all.

Enjoyable. Nice voice.

Very soulful, we love it

"Queen of Soul" is not a title that came from nowhere. It is reserved for the greatest.

This is great 4

Lots of hits here. Very good

She truley is THE lady soul, enjoyed this album and she’s got a hell of voice Highlight is You make me feel like a natural women ✨

She got some pipes! I like this one, was ready any moment for someone to jump out and start whaling an electric guitar solo but never happened! Good one tho

prety gud

She sings the hell outta this album. Generational vocal talent. Adele, Karen Carpenter, Aretha Franklin. Can't think of many other singers who stick the landing on EVERY single note like this. Unless that new Ringo Starr album HITS XD

I mean, she just IS soul. If you have a problem with this excellently paced and pitched album, I think you have a problem with the genre.

Very good

This album surprised me. I have never been a fan of Motown necessarily. I generally stray away from it. I have always liked "Chain of Fools" and "Natural Woman." Both classics and the rest of this album was very nice as well! I'm glad to finally enjoy the majority of an album. I would like to give 3.5 if possible, but will lean towards 4.

Probably my favorite Aretha album

YOU MAKE ME FEEL… YOU MAKE ME FEEL…

its ok

Legendary powerhouse singer. Amazing stuff

- fantastische Songabfolge: ständig wechselnde Rhythmen, Melodien und Tempi - wunderschönes Instrumentearrangement in Natural Woman - schönes Abschlusslied - sehr kurzweiliges Album

This album is not my thing, but it sure as hell is essential listening.

WOW - Fantastic early Pre RESPECT Aretha. A treasure Thanks for bringing it to our attention

Not my chosen genre, but I can appreciate the talent on show here, exceptional voice. Sunday morning/easy listening music.
