Dropping this one half way through. 4/10. It’s uninspired and mediocre, musically and lyrically
Just couldn’t get into it, not sure what all the fuss was supposed to be about
Too simplistic at times
I'll give it up to them for Fell in Love With a Girl and We're Going to Be Friends. Great songs. That said, I don't like The White Stripes. Sad! I pondered why I'm hating for a while this weekend. I think we got off on the wrong foot (but my critiques are also still valid). When I was deep into classic rock in my pre-teens they blew up and I felt it was a sub-par rip off of my favorite bands. Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground sounded like a worse version of Dear Mr. Fantasy to me. My main issue is the decisions they made to stand out were just that, and not artistic decisions to create better music. Not having a bass guitar makes this record worse. I hear a lot of music that is derivative of classic rock songs and some power chord/riff hacks. I also enjoy those songs MORE than the truly original ones (The Union Forever). The red and white theme is also off putting. I want to like this band and compared to their contemporaries, they are objectively good. I'll try to keep an open mind.
eh some were ok most were mid to bad
I don't really like the White Stripes, but two songs here, 'Fell In Love With a Girl' and 'Hotel Yorba,' I have in constant rotation. The former is an incredible song—it's short, punchy, witty, and catchy, something the rest of this album is NOT. That song feels like a punk song where the band's stripped-down, two-piece, minimalistic sound actually works in their favor. Almost everything else here though sounds like that bastardized blues sound the band goes for. 'We're Going to Be Friends' is the least guilty of this album's worst tropes, and while it sounds as cheesy as a 2000's indie song can possibly sound, I never minded it - it's cute. I find it funny that people dissed Meg White's drumming a lot back in this band's heyday, she does a great job laying down these very simplistic albeit punchy drum patterns - it certainly fits the blues-rock sound the band goes for. And there are some decent riffs here for sure, like on 'Offend In Every Way' and 'I Think I Smell a Rat'. It's just, most of the time, I can't stand Jack White's awkward lead vocals and it soils almost every song here. I did like him on 'The Union Forever' though, where he sounds sort of like Jim Morrison of all people. And with no discernable bassline, things end up sounding flat, and skeletal. There's so much unused space in the mix in most of these songs. It's a unique aesthetic and sound, and if there's something I'll praise The White Stripes endlessly on it's that they certainly stuck out in the 2000s indie scene...but just not in a way I particularly ever cared for.
Right, the one White Stripes album that has any case for being here, in my opinion. Also the only one I think I genuinely liked most of the way through. Let's see if it holds up. Scanning the reviews while I listen, someone says this is the least good of their albums, that just stopped me in my tracks. After this Jack White never made another record with more than like three good songs on it. Still, people have enormous capacity to be hideously wrong about all sorts of things I guess. Hmm this does start to go awry after Fell in Love With a Girl. I remember this feeling from when I last listened to it regularly 20 years ago or so. Yeah, there's a few half decent songs after that but nothing really good. I Can't Wait is probably the best song after Fell In Love with a Girl, its just there's so much that sounds like it but just a bit shitter preceding, it's harder to stand out. So that reviewer may not have been as wrong as I blithely stated above. This record simply follows the same pattern as every record Jack has ever released, it just does it earlier. And yet again, it's 40 minutes long but feels like an hour. How does he do it? Remarkable, the consistency.
This is pure, rough energy. There’s no polish, just raw rock that’s perfectly messy. It doesn’t rely on flashy production; instead, it’s all about that rare, authentic feeling. The album is a reminder that rock, at its heart, doesn’t need any frills to make an impact.
Not too bad Vocals kinda poor Recognised some songs I didn't think I'd hear Inoffensive listen Wouldn't listen again, don't understand the whole "essential album" narrative Songs saved: 0
My least favourite of the White Stripes albums featured on the 1001 albums list. I found this seriously underwhelming compared to their other albums I’ve heard. General consensus suggests I am wrong, however I just couldn’t warm to this.
PLONK PLONK PLONK PLONK PLONK
i think i just missed the boat on the white stripes. if i had listened contemporaneously, I'd probably be able to appreciate it more or at least have some nostalgia, but coming to them fresh in the 2020s, having already listened to plenty of blues, 70s garage rock and proto punk, I don't hear anything from them i wouldn't rather get somewhere else. not bad but just doesn't do anything for me. minus 1 point for jack white's nasally voice that feels even more untempered than on later albums (and not in a good way)
3 par endroits, 2 par d'autres
Meh. Not a fan. Jack Black’s guitar always sounds to be slightly out of tune.
This is a lazy set of songs. Half formed jamming riffs with terrible lyrics. Really terrible lyrics.
The Good: the medical reference to the album The Bad: the white blood cells are incapable of doing their job. The Ugly: again I need to wonder why certain albums are included in this list.... A wasn't a huge fan of the White Stripes when they emerged on the scene, and after listening to this album I can understand why I am still NOT a fan. So many indie bands that are million times better. Don't get me wrong, you can have this album playing in the background and you'd not notice... which is good and bad. Still, not to my liking. 2*
++: Fell in Love with a Girl, We're Going to Be Friends +: Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Hotel Yorba, I'm Finding It Harder to Be a Gentleman, Expecting, Offend in Every Way, Aluminium, I Can't Wait, Now Mary, This Protector +-: The Union Forever, The Same Boy You've Always Known, I Think I Smell a Rat, I Can Learn -: Little Room 6,9/10
Cookie-cutter rock music if I've ever heard combined with some egregious vocals. Best - everything is MID Worst - Little Room and Aluminum 2/5
I've said it before, I like this sound but I don't know the songs well enough to tell one album of their from another. 2 stars
The album starts out great and is interesting. I have of course heard some of these songs before. By the end of the album I was definitely ready for it to be over. They could have cut the last five or so songs off and the album would have been even better. I'm sure I will hear the hits again but I don't think that I need to listen to the whole album again.
I preferred the more up tempo and less grungy sound of Get Behind Me Satan
Alright, not the best white stripes album
Their other album was so much better, this was cringe, some songs sounded like they are part of a musical. Stand-out: The Same Boy You've Always Known
Why is this on a 1001 albums to listen to before you die list? Can't say I liked it.
Their parts I can appreciate but overall, no. 2
Should have recruited a vocalist.
It’s no seven nation army but it was good. We’re going to be friends was a standout and I feel like the lyrics were creative
There are some riffs in here, but the garage rock aesthetic isn't working for me. Neither are Jack White's vocals which can get a bit too strained. Overall more misses than hits unfortunately. Offend In Every Way is my favorite song, a vaguely country rock sounding riff with the right amount of groove. Some others like Aluminum or This protector see just weird. It's not good.
I knew a couple of the songs, but this was kinda hard to listen to. I'm sure there is a time and a place but the production is rough.
I think Jack White is a talented guy, and parts of this sound great. I bet they were sensational live. But after a while I found I wasn't connecting with it and the tracks sounded like demo versions tacked on to a normal album as bonus material.
Yeah it's OK isn't it. They weren't worth all the attention they got at the time, it was a bit like people had forgotten what raunchy rock or blues actually sounded like at that point, so when they heard some they got a pleasant surpirse. I'd broadly lump this in as Junkyard Blues, you know, noisy blues by white people, Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits, and Jon Spencer have all been there before but the White Stripes do have a charm of their own. A breath of fresh air, but really just a modish re-tread, and as usual despite success and acclaim they went mostly downhill from here. It's fine, I like it.
Not their best
Ick
I have never understood the attraction of The White Stripes, and still don't
Not for me!
What an interesting listen for me.... I have been lowkey curious about The White Stripes for a bit. I of course know Seven Nation Army and am a fan of that song but never got around to exploring more (or so I thought). I did not like the beginning of this album. I was convinced it was going to be a 1 star for me for probably the first 8 tracks. Then it hit We're Going to Be Friends and unearthed a memory I had completely forgotten about. There was a period of time I DID try to get into The White Stripes, I believe around the time Elephant came out when I was 14 or 15. Overall my reaction had been "??? ok? well I'm going to save a couple of these and go back to my other music." We're Going to Be Friends was one of the ones I liked, but when my dad swapped streaming services (either Rhapsody to Napster, or from Napster back to Rhapsody. He did this a few times.) I lost all my liked songs. I never got back to it and somehow The White Stripes remained filed in my brain as something I had never really tried to get into. Anyway, triggering long forgotten memories aside, I think I still react like "??? ok?" at least to this album. The second half of the album I like much more than the first but is still not a love other than We're Going to Be Friends. So at least I can bump it up from my initial reaction of 1 star to 2. I feel like I see seeds of music I could really like but it feels like it hasn't ripened yet to me. I think there is at least one later album by theirs on the list so very curious if I will like that more.
Sounds like yelling. Not my kind of music.
This does not resonate with me at all. Not bad, but I feel completely meh towards this.
Not my favorite album Top tracks: Fell In Love With A Girl, We’re Going To Be Friends
I remember when we first heard “Fell In Love With A Girl” my friends and I thought “This sounds like a Gap commercial.” It still does. I like the first song. The rest ranges from mildly irritating to skillful and not unpleasant but rather derivative.
Not for me
Some of the songs are well known, but the music is simplistic and I don't like the singing.
m parecieron todas iguales, no m transmitio nada, no pille el album
white stripes album from 01. Most songs fit for a fifa soundtrack. Cementing their legacy as one hit wonders. 2
2.5/5 i only knew the white stripes seven nation army and apple blossom before i listened to this, i thought this was gonna be good as well but was kinda disappointed
You know, I’d mostly written The White Stripes off - and this didn’t change my mind on that front at all HOWEVER it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. There is a certain charm to the rawness of their music. That being said, it gets boring quick.
Truly such a dull band
It’s either 2 or 3 but I’ll say 2 given just how middle of the road this really is. Napoleon, we’re gonna be friends. Typically I’m alright with their work but this just doesn’t tick any boxes. Some decent lyrics I suppose. Jack White has come a long way.
Dull
It’s ok. Interesting to listen to since I hadn’t heard it before. I guess I only like white stripes/Jack white radio songs.
Meh
Album #16 IDK Grunge?? Emo? Dead Leaves is not a song to start the day with especially the opening guitar riff.. to paraphrase Phoebe, my ears oh my ears. I now know why this album appealed to my teenager back in the 2000's. I am absolutely positive if I was a teen during this time this album would have been on repeat. Interestingly enough the album is playing in the background and my ears only really perked up when "We're Going to Be Friends" began to play. Out of all the tracks on this album that track has the highest rating, maybe because it is relatable and the lyrics are understood.
SOOOOOO once again here we are with another pepermint white stripes fucking album, let's see if I can get at least two songs to my collection. Well, that was weird, the lady was nowhere to be seen. I wonder if they were still together or loving at the time.
Hm. I never really found a connection to the White Stripes, and even with this intense listening session, it hasn't changed. It's alright, I guess, but not my cup of tea.
Okay, these albums are beginning to make me feel the way I do when I visit an art gallery and I’m standing next to someone who oh’s and ah’s over a bunch of squiggly lines on a canvas and I just don’t get it. Music should make us feel, and there’s like 15 or 16 tracks here and only 1 (we are gonna be friends) made me feel anything positive, the rest are bad lyrics, drum banging, and guitar scratching that makes me feel angry or annoyed. I guess like art you can appreciate technical expertise but if sampling it doesn’t make you feel something other than angry or put upon I contend it has no value. Unless being angry is your goal
This album seemed too long. Was enjoying it enough, but got bored about halfway through. Kind of repetitive, couldve used more fun songs like Fell in Love With a Girl. 4/10
Not my cup of tea. Has a few redeeming qualities but not for me. Not a 1 but a 2.
Not a white stripes fan . This album did not change my mind
2,5
Interesting sound. It feels like the sound (maybe even just the riff) is the focal point of every song and the lyrics are a bit of an afterthought tacked on the end. The drumming is unbearably basic, and the lack of variety in the style and tone of the guitar riffs doesn’t help. There are one or two gems here, for sure, but I feel like you could pick your favorite four or five tracks and have the same album in a much more pleasingly concise fashion. Towards the end it felt as if I was glancing at my watch wondering “when is this gonna end?”
Once again, some ok songs. Still, not my cup of tea.
Okay. Not my favorite sound - quite dissonant at times.
Track 1: like the fuzz. Track 2: fun track to listen to. Track 3: decent fun keys following the guitar. Track 4: Always a great listen! Track 5: an okay song with a decent riff Track 6: fun that it’s just drums and his voice Track 7: like the slow riff in this and great tone. Track 8: okay song Track 9: one of the first songs I learned. Track 10: decent song again. Track 11: like the riff in this Track 12: like the weird screams Track 13: okay like a lot of the songs Track 14: like some of the things going on in this. Track 15: good song for the end Track 16: fun piano song. Overall: 5.2/10 there’s a few good songs on this but nothing that really stands out to clearly in my opinion besides like Fell in love with a girl and We’re gonna be friends
Ok
Love 'Hotel Yorba' but after hearing it the first time I thought it was a track that was leading me to a new discovery, not the one that saves this album from a 1 star.
2/5 Sole cool stuff but really not my thing.
I have never liked The White Stripes. From the very first time I heard them, when their first popular single made it to the radio or MTV, it was exactly the wrong thing for me. There are some songs on this album I kind of like, such as "I'm Finding It Harder to Be a Gentleman," and "Expecting" rocks much more than I was expecting to hear. However, in general, the super stripped down approach is not appealing to me, especially when it leads to lyrics like in "Little Room" or triteness such as "I Fell in Love with a Girl," which feels like a throwaway song, to me. I do like some other bands that may seem related in a "Garage Rock" genre, such as The Hives, but their punk inspirations, more clever lyrics, and more complex instrumentation and parts make them much more.
was okay
I like the style of rock but the delivery of the songs themselves just didn’t resonate with me
Cant listen to this shit anymore
Jack White continues to be one hell of a blues guitarist. There’s no denying that. The songwriting of The White Stripes still doesn’t quite get to me though and there’s just too many moments on White Blood Cells I wouldn’t care about if it weren’t for the name Jack White. Also the entire situation that is Meg White on drums doesn’t help either. Did you know that she has won more Grammys than Neil Peart, John Bonham, Mike Portnoy, Danny Carey, Dave Lombardo and Buddy Rich combined? What a world, huh?
eh
not a big rock person, some hidden gems on this record. The vocal delivery for the most part was very jarring to me.
Off-kilter sound that did not seem to have much flow at all. Felt like a group of singles mashed together. Standouts included "Fell In Love With a Girl" and "We're Going to Be Friends". If I went to a concert for this, I would be waiting the whole night for those2 songs alone.
No
fine!
Ok
Not bad I like the music just none of the songs really grab me
did I not get this or do the white stripes actually kinda suck. 1 star for fell in love with a girl and 1 star for expecting.
I can't say that I enjoyed any of this.
Pretty authentically putting America‘s black guitar heritage back on the map without adding so much to it’s landscape in my opinion. Some heavy rocks isn’t enough.
Too simple. There’s a good reason bands don’t have less than 3 members. I guess I like the DIY punk ethos but the songs are too sparse. There is some good song writing buried away in there to just about save it from the 1 star club.
A little too experimental for me. Best track: We're going to be Friends
I don't know what it is exactly about the White Stripes, but I just find them so boring. They have some undeniably great singles, but a whole album of theirs is a chore for me to get through. This one was no exception.
Det mesta låter likadant.
Utter shite for the most part. One of the most over-rated bands. A couple of listenable tracks but the rest was not for me.
not seven nation army, not as good as expected. it sounded like they were struggling to come up with content. there's something fake about it. the guy's voice was grating. Aluminum
This was fine, but nothing really grabbed me much, even their hit single. For being fairly average I'm going to give it 2.5. And round down. And as I was writing this, a Jack White song just came on my Discover Weekly on Spotify. "A Madman from Manhattan". Good song. At least 3.5, and I might round up. But this album... nothing much stood out.
A fine listen. A few to keep, but not much worth keeping beyond if I heard it on the radio, not for my own collection
too rowdy for me
Not a big white stripes guy. Liked the beginning but thought it dropped off significantly towards the end
Coming after Pixies Surfer Rosa (5*) this one doesn’t compare at all favourably. It lacks all the complexity that make Pixies compelling and great. 1 dimensional in comparison.
Hyviä biisi-ideoita; hyvin vähän biisejä. Parhaat kuulostavat täytevedoilta neljän tähden levyllä.
i mean it was better than elephant…
At first I thought it was OK but that blooming cymbal just kept being smashed and it gave me a headache.
actually a little disappointed. I have heard better songs from the white stripes.
'I Can't Wait' är ok. 'The Union Forever' är bra, lite långsammare, mörkare, post-punkigare. 'Fell In Love With a Girl' funkar också, Hives-vibes på den. Bästa låt: The Union Forever.
Meh, only a few good songs, lot of annoying ones, need to try and listen to the last half again
Never listened. Some cool moments but other guitar parts get tiring and the lyrics aren't great. 2.5 stars.
5/10
Sounded like a lot of the same to me...
That sure was White Blood Cells by The White Stripes. I'll just stick to "Seven Nation Army", thanks.
ok. so. no. i think about 2.5 of their songs were alright and tolerable but the rest were bad, really bad.
Didn't do much for me. Some very energetic moments but overall felt very much the same
I don’t get them.
"This album's only 40 minutes, thankfully" Feeling too tired to find this enjoyable today. Obviously We're Going To Be Friends is the best one.
I swear that I had been listening to this for an hour, but it turns out I was barely halfway through. There are some cool guitar tones and one or two catchy numbers, but overall White Blood Cells is a chore. Shit lyrics, draggy tempos, cartoon character voice - it's all here, folks. Wild to recall the White Stripes were once the future of rock. Anyway, right before this I listened to that Dennis Brown song, you know the one, it goes "Some like it hot / Some like it co-o-old" and that's ten times better than anything on White Blood Cells. Flashbacks to sitting on the bed of a university friend as he repeatedly tried to hack his way through the riff to 'I Think I Smell a Rat' and wanting to die.
hm... i am not sure how i feel about this. i, adhd haver, do not have the attention span for this i am not going to lie. i feel understimulated. i don't really want to keep listening to this. 1st song is a bit repetitive song 2 cool guitar. u i don't think this album is for me i'm gonna go listen to green day now sorry
I didn't enjoy this one. I didn't even finish the entire album
Dead leaves and the dirty ground - think I might find the vocals grating Hotel yorba- jaunty, alright I'm finding it harder to be a gentleman - like instrumental but god he sounds like an ass here Fell in love with a girl - short and catchy👍 Expecting- another short, catchy Song 👍 Little Room - weird interlude The union forever- haven't watched citizen Kane but instrumental is cool👍 The same boy you've always known - meh We’re going to be friends- advert core Offend in every way-nice riff, meh otherwise I think I smell a rat - as above Aluminum-feel like it would be better without the ahs tbh I can't wait -another perfectly alright song. Now Mary- cute song with changes of pace👍 I can learn- could get into this song👍 This protector- weird song to end on,not my fave This album was just ok to me, didn’t inspire. Compared to what I think the general field will be this is a 2/5 for me
Not a fan on this style.
Meh... overrated.
Alright
Okay, nothing stood out for me. Wouldn't listen again.
Me aburre.
Hate his voice lol, kind of fun though?
He just got married (third time's the charm!), so I'm excited to hear this. It's fine. I enjoy his take on this stuff. Nell and I talked (and then Caleb and I talked about it again) about how music is cyclical. So Jack White has "discovered" this stuff and brings it to the radio today, cool. But the original stuff *is* better. Not as slick, harder to hear sometimes, but closer to the source and better. Also, the whole list is flawed. But it's a project.
I liked a couple of songs but that was it.
Well, now I know that The White Stripes really are mostly just Seven Nation Army after all. And if anyone were in doubt that rock albums benefit from a bass guitar, here's an album to show them. I did enjoy The Same Boy You've Always Known and We're Going To Be Friends. But those are not enough to raise the score to 3 stars.
Shrill and annoying. Got seven seven songs in and that was enough. Yargh. Didn't add.
02/21/2022 A couple good songs! Nothing close to an all-timer, though! Some of y'all are crazy with these 5-star ratings.
damn
00’ee garage rock, rå elguitar, Distortion, iderigt
Sounds like it used to for me. I didn't dig it then and I don't now. This album is not for me. The musicianship is solid, I just don't like it. It all feels meh
Oh man. Some tracks are all time faves (Fell in Love with a Girl, We’re Gonna Be Friends), but a lot of cruft. And those first three tracks—all time whine in his voice. Oof. A rough two stars. (And I like Jack White!!!)
This automatically loses points because there's no bass. It's fine. It sounds like a bar band. I don't really get the hype that surrounded them. Listened through without prejudice and Hotel Yorba is still very annoying.
Best Song: Fell In Love With A Girl. This is how I wish all White Stripes songs sounded. Worst Song: This Protector. It just sounds amateurish? I understand their aesthetic is this kind of street performer vibe, but this really feels like a first or second rehearsal of a song, not a recorded track. Overall: Jack White's mewling cat vocals occasionally work here, but the general simplicity of all the songs makes it blend together very quickly. Each song feels like snippet of an idea that was considered for a moment before they cranked out the song and moved on to the next one. I do like the raw vibe though, and if they just played faster and with a little more life, I would actually like the album.
Would have liked this when it was released but it feels like overrated noise. Occasionally there’s a good track but it feels disjointed.
eh... borde troligen lyssna igen men gillade inte särskilt mycket.
Jack White is the default heir apparent to Jimmy Page and the White Stripes to the Stones. Jack White has a rudimentary grasp of his instrument at best. He's an imitator, not an innovator, unless you count dumbing down the music of his predecessors, which was already roots music. Wonderful. Which leads us to White Blood Cells.Naturally, the execution is garage-y and crude--Jack White is incapable of anything else. This leaves us with the songs themselves, which is where the strength of White Blood Cells, such as it is, lies. What Jack White has done here is to create songs that are the equivalent of the platonic ideal of a stool, i.e. having three legs and little else. To his credit, he creates punchy rhythms and melodies in the style that he's indebted to, cribbing liberally from the Stones and The Who, but there's literally nothing else. No grace notes. No solos worthy of the name. No innovations. No borrowing from other music traditions. This is basic, basic, basic, basic, basic stuff. Why in God's name would anyone listen to a Cliff Notes version of roots rock when there's so much of the real thing lying around? Beats me.
not my genre but the union forever and aluminum is really good its like a dead moon plays in 2001
false
Mmmmmm no es mi estilo
Surprisingly rubbish.
I wouldn’t say I like this type of music very much, but I actually enjoyed some of the non-guitar riffs quite a bit. But the freestyle nature of the vocals just isn’t my thing.
1. Şarkı dead leaves and dirty ground: güzel (tek riff, 90 lar sikik rockı ama güzel) 2. Şarkı hotel yorba: güzel (bob dylan tarzı) 3. Şarkı the union forever: güzel (90 lar sikik nirvanası ama şarkı tek düz değil. Bu şarkıyla albümde rock n roll arayışını kenara bırakıp 3 boyutu alternatif rock gözlüklerimi takıyorum.) 8. Şarkı the same boy you've always known: kötü( kardes 16 tane sarkı yapalım aynı olsunlar biri tutar. bu şarkıya önceki dinlediğim şarkıları da göz önünde bulundurarak kötü diyorum.) 9. Şarkı We're going to be friends: güzel( chill akustik gitar ve yerinde bir vokal. okeydir bu şarkı) 10. Şarkı now marry: eh işte ( eh işte işte) 15. Şarkı i can learn: kötü (vokal bi sus be kardesim, atlayarak dinledim) 16. Şarkı this protector: güzel (iyi bir kapanış olmuş, basit bir piyano ritmi yeterliymiş aslında, adınıza rock demenizd gerek yok, demiyoruz zaten kardes) Genel olarak albüm kötüydü. Sebebi ise benzer ve basit şarkılar olmaları. Albümün en sevdiğim şarkısı: i cant wait(oturup dinlerim)
not my jam - I'd heard Fell in Love With a Girl and We're Going to Be Friends before and they're good songs but the rest is meh
Eh. Not awful but probably won't listen again. 5/10

Didn't like his voice. Noisy.
Ok, very harsh/stark.
Every indie movie song is on this album. i don't like the white stripes though.
I was so excited to find a White Stripes song I actually like and then it ended up being only good song on the album. I'm just gonna address the biggest thing that bugs me about this, what the hell is the album cover supposed to be? It looks like seven shadow people threatening the Whites, but neither of them are really conveying any emotion other than "ugh" and one of the shadow people like he's proposing to Jack White. It's a pretty decent representation of the album, to be fair. I pretty often found myself making that same faces as both of the Whites at a good few points and I'm about as confused by the music as I am by the cover. It just sounds so empty and unappealing.
shit
muy comun para mi gusto
Kinda just the same semi-punk, whiny, off-putting sound.
Not a favorite of mine. Seems bad pretentiously
what an awful way to start this challenge, this shit sucked LMAO Apparently even the most pure, non-distilled indie rock still amounts to nothing but extremely simplistic riffs, irritating vocals that would sound better screamed, and Lars Ulrich level drumming (at least to me). This is so annoying that the genuine bangers (Fell In Love With A Girl, The Same Boy You’ve Always Known, We’re Going To Be Friends) are extremely jarring and don’t fit the vibe of the album at all. Almost all of these songs feel like they were made in an hour, and the ones that aren’t actively obnoxious are just absolutely nothing. Skip this and listen to literally any rock from the 70’s, it’s what they shamelessly stole from anyway
HardRock? Vou tentar escutar outro dia.
Not my fav
Boooooo
Most of the songs sounded the same to me. I know this makes me sound old as hell, but everything just blended together and became noise.
Ei ihan nyt iskenyt. Rumpali on vibojen vuoksi matkassa, kappaleet kuulostavat demoilta ja Whiten kitarointikin kuulostaa jotenkin vaivalloiselta. Vähän vaikea ymmärtää, että miksi tämäkin levy on tällä listalla.
aturdida.
not my thing
Not my cuppa tea.
Highly overrated album. Without any charm really. Very self aware. Annoying vocals and plodding delivery. Steer clear.
It’s not bad, but it’s not really anything. And I hate that.
Wasn't really my cup of tea.
love this guys voice but nothing special going on here. the album just gets more boring as it goes on. didn't hate it, just kinda blegghhh. saved: fell in love with a girl.
not for me tbh
Whiny vocals kind of punky with some Sabbath vibes amateur drummer I can’t support a band without a bass player (except the Doors and they eventually used one)
Not for me
How this made it onto a "most influential" list beggars belief. It's a smorgasbord of elements of rock, punk, Americana and The Beatles. A short (thankfully) and instantly forgettable album.
Starts off strong. Catchy, but not deep. Didn’t finish. After a while the music becomes noisy. The lyrics do absolutely nothing for me, the music neither.
Man. I despise Jack White. I can not with this band.
This band always bored me.
Just strange
I guess I just don’t get it
Fuck this
One dimension, tuneless, boring shite.
Not my thing. Repetitious
I just had to listen to Jack White’s solo album yesterday, curse this algorithm. I know this was so popular but I just can’t, never could with this band. I didn’t get the appeal in the 2000s and if anything their sound and lyrics and vibe have gotten even more cringy with age. Not for me.
Really great songs - but the choice to not have a bass makes it sound gimicky, pubescent and unfinished to me. Primitive, and not in a good way
Good riffs, repetive. One and done.
I can't wait for this record to be over. I really don't like the white stripes
I get why people like them, but to me the sloppy instrumentation is just annoying
I just can't get into The White Stripes, I've never heard a song that I would want to listen to again
40 minutes shouldn't be daunting, but this 40 minutes was. Found this difficult to listen to. Lackadaisical drumming and guitar playing throughout. Very few albums have I stopped, but only got half way through this before I felt I’d heard enough and wonder how they managed to become as big as they did. The musical version of Napoleon Dynamite.
‘ In 2012, Rolling Stone ranked the album at number 497 on its list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time’ says Wikipedia. On one listen, I’m surprised it was that high. I’ll admit, I’ve never heard of this band til now and I didn't need to. It says nothing to me. But I’m increasingly convinced how consequential you think an album is depends on where you were at in your life when you first heard it. Meaning anything you heard in your teens and 20s will probably seem more consequential than when you’re older. I’m probably far too old for it cos it just sounds like the same stuff the neighbourhood boys were bashing out at the local hall in the 70s.
Crap. And shit crap at that.
Nicht meine Richtung
First listen. Do there really need to be another White Stripes album on here? Man what is this shit??? "I think I smell a rat" is some of the worst things ive ever heard. WTF
Thoroughly disliked this one. Don't hate the band or anything, though. I guess just having this album get recommended to me as "one of the albums that you MUST listen to before you die" is a little much.
Not fond of the vocals. Guitar and piano have no subtlety. Not for me.
The vocals are too nasal and whiny for me, and something just seems a bit... empty? White Stripes have always felt a bit Emperor's New Clothes-y to me, this audition didn't change that for me.
скучно
I've never understood what all the fuss is about.
Thanks (not!) for the discordant guitar feedback screech at the start. Put me in bad odour for the whole album really. Sounds to me like what a group of schoolboys in their parents garage would produce. Nothing new or musically fresh or groundbreaking is in this album.
That was a big no. His voice sound like a teenager whining so hard his forehead veins starts to pop and his face turns red. His voice didn't irritate me as much in Elephant, probably thanks to the effects added.
No
i'm having a hard time with his voice. definitely the type of rock i don't like. but it must be great when you feel angry.
👎
Unfortunately do not like these guys
yuck
Had a headache when I went to listen and it definitely was not a good idea
With the exception of "You and I Are Going to be Friends", the rest of the album feels like nothing more than a bunch of half baked ideas that almost approach demo level, but are not remotely album ready yet. I respect the stripped down sound, but come on, this is ridiculous. The most fun you can have with this album is to imagine what each song could have been with a producer and song arrangements that included more instruments. An album that I think does not belong on this list.
Not my style
Jack White vocals just aren’t my fave. Read up on garage rock and know this is the style, but not for me I guess. I know it’s great music, and it’s like nothing I’ve listened to, so there’s that. I liked side b more, not sure why Fave Track: offend in every way Runner up: aluminum Least fave: most of it
The album starts by ripping off the riff from “25 or 6 to 4” and heads down the road of screechy teen-angst vocals. When does the guitar phenom show up?
It's somewhere between 1960's Kinks and my son's high school band, without any physical or emotional ties (for me)....... meh. Gonna head back to Ryan Adams and Killers.
couldn’t finish - never been a fan and all the songs sound the same
Never played an album of them before. Some songs were interesting and some not so much.
The White Stripes are an American band who sound like a British band trying to sound like an American band. After diving in the mid-Atlantic searching for treasures, The White Stripes return with a pathetic bounty of scraps and discarded tat, the pearls having long already been plundered.
crap
Didn't enjoy personally. 1.5
Thought I liked The White Stripes. I do not.
Pretty shitty, very basic and low production value
Painful, hard to believe someone put this together as an album of their work.
Todo ruido. Solo ruido.
Meh
just sommone albumi josta en oikeen tykkää... 2000-luku alkupuoli rock hei lets rock guys! we are going to rock the house tonight yell ROCK when i yell LETS you yell ROCK! ei käy.. ei käy mulle. bändin vokalisti on malliesimerkki lauluäänestä joka minulle kuulostaa aivan vitun paskalta,, eli ei hyvä ääni mutta ei hyvä paska ääni vaan paska paska ääni. albumin keskiosassa instrumentaatio alkaa olla vähän parempaa, löytyy tasapaino, ssielu, mieli mutta laulun lyllerrykset pilaa senkin...... ja loppuosa on aikalalilla yhtä paskaa.... ajattelin ensin että kaksi tähteä, mutta ei, ei, nämä ovat 1001 albumia jotka on pakko kuunnella, ja jos kultti ei ole täällä tarkoittaa se, että nämä albumit kuuluu olla kaikki parempia,,,, SAATANA!! tänään en armoa anna...
Very noisy and clashy. Bit bangy. Not my fave to be honest.
noise
12/06/2021 Today's Album: "White Blood Cells" by The White Stripes - I don't like this album. Usually I can deal with post punk and older punk rock because of some sweet instrumentals or some redeeming quality from the whiny vocals, but with this album, it really is just blown out and shitty. The only song I liked was one I already knew prior to hearing this album and thats the only highlight on this album in my eyes. I think this band obviously has talent because they have a crazy good reputation, but either this album is some of thier worst material or their sound is just not for me Score: 2/10 Didn't like Highlights: We're Going to be Friends
By the end it was barely listenable. Hated it. I can hear the good intentions and enthusiasm, but they didn't make up for the bad songs, awful and intrusive drumming, grating vocals, overbearing harsh sounding guitar. I appreciate the idea of a 'back to basics' stripped down sound, but get a producer for God's sake.

One of my favorites.
