Interesting guitar sounds that borrow from garage rock, blues and country. But the disjointed drumming is a put-off.

Except for the song “we’re gonna be friends” I rushed through this album quick. Not it for me.

Genuinely such a hit or miss album for me, the vibes switched a lot and I only really enjoyed 4-5 of the total songs. I saved the ones I liked but I wouldn’t play this album front to back often

Ugh, I really can't listen to all of this as the White Stripes really set my teeth on edge. I'm having quite a good day and I'm not going to ruin it with this record. A begrudging nod to Hotel Yorba and Fell in Love with a Girl, which I can't help but like. The rest of it is gigantically overrated, and incredibly hard to listen to, never mind actually enjoy.

Wow maybe my expectations were kind of high, but this was one of my most disappointing albums so far. All the songs here sounded the same and I am not a fan of Jack White's vocals.

Not really my style, I didn’t really listen to it that much, but from my 3 listens, nothing really popped off. It does have some great instrumentals but overall the songs seem too similar with one another. Maybe I should give it a few more listens and let it seap in.

A banging start to this album, and to my return to the generator. Let's see how it goes. Sciffle sounding 2 song. I like the electric piano and lead guitar on track 3. My favorite so far. 4 and 5 are punky. Little room is an unnecessary interlude. The darkness of the union forever is very nice. 8 is another good song. 9 is charming and naive. 10 is great 11 less 12 not very good. Shapeless. Last two songs are good. Overall, I can't say I enjoyed this album as a whole. Something about the white stripes doesn't click to me yet. The slopiness doesn't hit in the right place for me. It wasn't a punishment to listen to, but also not seeing myself coming back to it. 2.4

I knew already that I wouldn't like this very much. I really think The White Stripes are boring as fuck - first song is actually great though. The riff rules and I like that the guitar is out of tune. But the lyrics???? God damn they're not good. I think Ty Segall did this sound better years later, though Jack's riffs are pretty good until he starts singing the worst most nothing lyrics ever - don't enjoy his voice either. Seems like a solid fella though. Doesn't take away from the fact that I do not like this! This app paused bc i waited so long to listen- i was dreading it lmao. Overall, rock music is so damn boring sometimes, brother. Also the song where he blatantly rips off all apologies lmfao

wasn’t moved. didn’t like the sound at all and only recognized We’re Gonna Be Friends, which sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the album. expected to like it more because i really like alternative stuff but it wasn’t memorable.

Didn’t stand out too much to me. Some of the songs were pretty nice

had a better opinion of The White Stripes when they were a band I kind of knew and was pretty sure I liked. Increased familiarity has not been to their benefit. to be fair I do think this is a good version of what it is. I just don't particularly like what it is.

DUN DUN-DUN-DUN DUN-DUN DUN, nevermind, that's on a different album. He sounds like he's on the verge of tears most of the time! Makes me want to check in with him and ask if everything is fine. This really didn't need 16 tracks, did it? The instrumentals—for the most part—are fine and fun and energetic but I just can't really get behind the vocalist. Next time, just hire Julian Casablancas and let him do it. The writing is less than stellar too (I'm totally fine with steering clear of unnecessary complexity, but, come on, "I Think I Smell a Rat" solely consists of the rhymes rat-at-rat-bat-rat-at-rat-mat-rat). I think "Aluminum" was my favorite track on here. I love the vision they had for that one, very mathy. It was also the only instrumental, go figure.

Genuinely infuriating stuff. Some of the songs are bangers. Some of the songs are terrible. The vocals are consistently shit.

not my thing for sure but i like the guitar parts. this seems like a really classical rock album despite being made in 2001 of all years. the main issue with this album is how boring and samey all the tracks sound like.

Couple good songs on here especially toward the end but it’s not my cup of tea I would say. Definitely can see why people enjoy it but it’s not for me.

I’m deficient in angst right now which I feel is a necessary supplement to fully enjoy this album. Many of the songs felt like the could be the backing track to a ‘gritty’, supernatural, young-adult film or series from the mid 2000’s - which I intend as a compliment. I just couldn’t get into it - will give it another listen when next suitably stroppy. Fave songs - aluminium, I can’t wait, this protector, fell in love with a girl

Wasn't the worst thing ever, it didn't interest or spark anything in me either though. Wasn't something I would put on in the background too, just not my thing, it felt empty and like it was missing something. Would maybe sound better if I had better attachments to it but I'm a bum modern 17 year old girl. Don't expect much from me

I hate the song Seven Nation Army so was worried what to expect but it was fairly pleasant, inoffensive music but also really forgettable. 2/5.

This felt like a collection of demos/unfinished ideas more than an actual album. Which is a shame since I think there was a good amount of potentially cool ideas here but none of them got fleshed out or polished enough to become memorable. 2/5

White Stripes - White Blood Cells It finished without me even noticing, which kind of says it all. Meg's shit drumming started out endearing but soon became tiresome, and Jack isn't as great a songwriter and guitar player as he thinks he is. However, there are some little nuggets in here worth a second listen. Gentleman, Hotel Yorba, I Think I Smell A Rat, Some dullards - Little Room, This Protector, The Union Forever. And the rest were.....meh. Best - Hotel Yorba Worst - Little Room 5/10 Overhyped, overrated, and finally over full stop.

I have heard of The White Stripes, but only a little. I know they are an American duo, who pretended to be brother and sister, but they were married. Jack White still performs under his own name and Meg White stopped performing due to anxieties. White Blood Cells is their third studio album. It was released to universal acclaim. My first thought was Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes, but The Stripes are older than Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes are contemporaries. Other times, I thought of much older bands from the 60s and 80s. My biggest problem was White's voice. I really am not a fan of it. "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground", "Fell in Love with a Girl", "We're Going to Be Friends", "The Same Boy You've Always Known", and "The Union Forever" are the best songs. It was really hard to decide. I need quite a few more listens to be certain. Overall, it is not a terrible album and I can hear how it was part of the post-punk revival of the early 2000s. Unfortunately, it sort of disappeared by the end of the decade. 6/10.

I guess it's just Jack White's voice. I just don't care for it. I *should* like the music. It's minimalist and raw, and borrows a lot of Zeppelin riffs. But for some reason, it jus doesn't do it for me.

A couple of good songs in the first third but falls off a cliff for the rest of the duration.

Lo siento un poco flunky como para estar en esta lista de álbums. Tal vez pq no es tanto mi style? Pero ya no lo puedo seguir justificando así. Creo que simplemente en algunas partes me parece mucha "bulla" más que música con sentido. No sé, no tiene ese factor "re-listen" me parece no tan escuchable. Pero dentro de todo hay un par de canciones un poco más destacables, pero nada del otro mundo.

I generally find the White Stripes/Jack White annoying and uninspired, and while my perception has been challenged a little with time and listening to Elephant as part of this challenge, I still find White Blood Cells annoying/boring/frustrating. The album is not without some positives, but Jack White's voice and his garage rock blues do nothing for me.

This is that early 2000s music that I just cant enjoy. If I heard these songs in some montage scene in a movie I’d think it’s cool and sick but to listen to straight up, not my favorite.

This is my second serving of White Stripes from the menu, and it was only marginally more palatable than the first. Whatever it is these guys apparently bring to the table, I just can't seem to stomach. Dull drumming, messy, forgettable guitar work, and nasally, obnoxious fucking vocals, it's a recipe that somehow brought them international acclaim but personally just leads to a pretty glum listen, which I'm sure was not the intention. There were at least 2-3 songs on here I did enjoy a bit to be fair, namely "We're Going to Be Friends", which has wormed it's way into the popular subconscious as a sort of quirky but chipper tune, and a couple other tracks I did enjoy the melodies/riffs. But then you have tracks like "I Think I Smell A Rat" which really epitomizes everything else that turns me off from this album and, seemingly, The White Stripes as a whole. I eagerly await the third course. Fav Track: 9 - We're Going to Be Friends Best Three Track Run: 7, 8, 9

I have avoided this for 25 years but I guess it is time? Why did I avoid it? Because I hated every one of these “the” bands that blew up at the same time. Fell In Love With a Girl felt substance free and ragged in a slapdash way instead of a raw and passionate way. I realize I am very much in the minority here. I also found Seven Nation Army to be monotonous later on. Sue me. Getting into the album, the problem comes down to a few things, the first being that Jack's voice is about as good as Meg's drumming. Like, there's a definite difference between Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground and Hotel Yorba and We're Going to Be Friends, but there's something that feels… not quite inauthentic, I believe Jack White believes in this stuff… maybe style over substance? Either way, this mostly bores me and makes me think of the bands who did this first and better. I want to at least understand White's “guitar hero” status, and at least on this album, i can't pick that out at all. 2*, top track “the same boy you've always known

Fell In Love With A Girl is a great song, mainly thanks to its LEGO music video by Michel Gondry. If I had to pick just one White Stripes album for the 1001 list however then it would be Elephant and not this. Not this. Hotel Yorba is a Hotel Nope.

One to come back to. The first half of the album grew on me at the second listen. I like Jack White and other White Stripe albums, but I think it was too much cacophony for how I was feeling.

This was supposed to be a rock revival?? A couple things i will say is that I wasn’t bored for the most part, he kept the energy high but despite that it still comes off empty. The saving grace from getting a one is that the second half of this album is much better than the first with more of a variety. The first is full of songs that are redundant and sound indistinguishable from each other. The entire album feels very corporate today, most of it belongs on a Madden soundtrack not a greatest albums list. However I do understand that it was apparently a shock to everyone when it came out but I’m too young for that and I’ve heard this style 100s of times since then. Maybe if I was in high school when this came out I would enjoy it more but it’s no Nevermind. Nowadays I hear better music made by high schoolers in their garage. Except for “we’re going to be friends”, “Dead leaves and dirty grounds”, and “offend in any way” I wouldn’t say I like any song. Hopefully I enjoy their other albums coming up. 1.5/5⭐️

Майже весь альбом звук та мікс тут такі, що дуже орієнтуються на те, як колись було, і мені це рішення здається не дуже вдалим. Якщо на інших альбомах гітара Уайта іскриться та є драйвом їх музики, то тут цього практично не відчувається.

Як на мене, то дуже посередній альбом, який ще й стає відчутно гірше у другій половині.

Mostly bearable with a sprinkling of hey that almost had something there. Did not care fore lead vocal or heavy guitar combination that was noisy enough to make me wanna keep volume low

I am almost always a fan of garage rock and alt rock, but for some reason this album just wasn't for me. It felt disjointed and even thought it was only 40 minutes, somehow felt far longer. To the point that that until i looked and saw its length, I assumed it was well over an hour. I'm sure there are plenty of people that like this album, and I like other songs from the White Stripes, but for me the one or two songs I did enjoy on this album don't save it from how much I don't like the rest of it.

One white stripes is enough. Fell in love with a girl is great but elephant is a greater album.

Lots of noise with some ok songs here and there. People love or hate Meg White's drums and I lean towards hating it. I don't mind a more acoustic, laid back sound but sometimes it's just noisy.

Realising I've only heard Seven Nation Army from them. Didn't like this. It's bad, baby's first rock music. Not without merit but most songs I actively disliked. Don't like Jack White's singing or composition, he gives off Morrissey energy.

To me, this sounds a step above garage band vibes? Even how it's mixed with being very guitar and vocals forward. Not sure I like this guys voice either. The super heavy electric guitar chords aren't my favorite. "You can't be in love because there is no true love" - super dark??? "This blue ocean water cannot stop my heart and mind from burning" "I hope he gives you a hand lowering my casket" We are Gonna be Friends is such a shift after the first half of the album! The first song has a very iconic opening to it, and the guitars are cool there. Final thoughts: I didn't love this album sonically or lyrically, but We are Gonna be Friends is such a little gem within an otherwise dark and aggressive album.

The White Stripes are the definition of solid power rock in sort of DIY minimalist don't give a fuck attitude. Like with other albums that's charming. This album here is a bit too much of the same I find and I do think that it's not good enough for an a great album list like this one.

I guess listening to The White Stripes when I was younger I just totally ignored the lyrics, mostly because I couldn't really understand what was being said most of the time. I kinda wish I could go back to that ignorance because a lot of these songs are unignorably nice-guy misogyny. Then again I've never really listened through their albums and mostly just enjoyed the singles I've heard. The Jack White solo album wasn't too long ago and Katie really didn't like it due to that misogyny, but here its way, way more nitceable. Still, I get why this album was so important to Garage Rock when you compare what came before versus after it, and I do like the rough-around-the-edges tone the entire album is going for and executes pretty well in my opinion. I've always personally liked Meg Whites drumming whenever I've heard it, despite knowing that's a somewhat contentious take. I just don't quite think The White Stripes works as well here as an album listening experience then a bunch of individual songs. Beyond the afformentioned misogyny, something didn't quite work for me here and I'm not sure exactly what.

Bashing around playing blues riffs on loud crappy amps and howling into the microphone is an impulse as old as crappy amps; it's fun for all involved (except anyone listening). I get the spirit, but despite trying semi regularly cannot get past finding this band grating and mostly annoying.

Gritty guitar, with minimal processing. Vocals and drums to match. Songs are very simple and not particularly original. Simple predictable chord sequences & cliched delivery. I don't find it very exciting or interesting. The Union Forever sounds promising to start with but doesn't really go anywhere. Famously a band with no bassist, but I don't think adding one would have improved things much.

Notes: Album has that typical 2000s teen rebellious feeling to it if that's what you're into. Some good tracks with the lows and mids overwhelming the highs. The lead singer seems to forget at times that he doesn't need to sound awful whiny while the band is fairly consistent through the album. Not terrible but would not go out of my way to hear this album again. Highlights: Fell in love with a Girl, The same boy you've always known, We're going to be Friends Lowlights: I think I smell a rat, Aluminum (teeth hurtin music), This Protector.

It was.... fine. I don't get upset when the White Stripes are playing, but I never seek them out to play them on my own. This is easily a 2.5 for me, but I think a 2 rating here because, again, I will never play them intentionally.

Not sure why this is on the list. Nothing very special about it in my honest opinion. Good guitar playing, yes. But the lyrics are pseudo deep and the singer‘s voice is screechy. But it’s not annoying enough for a worse rating. It’s just not my cup of tea.

What’s this shit, now? Just the same noise the White Stripes trot out time after time, like they don’t sound like glam rock also rans. Just because Jack White told you it was good doesn’t make it so. It wasn’t innovative in 2001, and it sure isn’t now. Never let me hear it again!

The White Stripes were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame a couple of weeks ago, and they’re included on this list, so clearly someone is hearing something I’m not. I get the overall idea of the band, the stripped down garagey rock n roll that seems like it’s best appreciated in a small, crowded, and sweaty room, but it never comes together for me. Jack White has some interesting lyrics from time to time here, but overall I get the feeling of pastiche that’s filtered through the idiosyncrasies of a two piece band. I appreciate that Jack White is a huge music fan and has used his platform to promote a lot of lesser-known bands, but that doesn’t make me like this any more.

A curiously timely entry (the Stripes were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame over the weekend). WBC, like every Jack White release, suffers from being very committed to traditional blues and rock ’n roll. I enjoyed the more minimalist, economical approach to this on De Stijl, but even with that I rarely made it through a handful of tracks. Obviously this embrace and distillation of classic rock roots is well done and has served him well; dude really knew his stuff even in the late 90s. Unfortunately, the attention to sonic aesthetic - stripped-down, minimalist, lots of space - wasn’t the only thing Americana and roots music took from their success and so, at least in Nashville, this gifted an entire revival of blues rock to a generation of kinda OK rock and folk types, whereas whatever lackluster trends were being pursued at the time of WBC in indie rock died out and have largely been forgotten. Sidenote: impressed that this has such a high rating here and several reviews calling it perfect. It's not my thing, but cool for y'all.

Third time’s not the charm for me with The White Stripes. 102 albums in and the third White Stripes album!! While White Blood Cells might be the strongest of the trio so far, I still struggle to connect with their raw, garage-rock aesthetic. Jack White’s voice continues to grate, and I find it hard to get past that to enjoy the songwriting. There’s energy and attitude here, sure—but I’m not convinced I needed to hear one White Stripes album, let alone three. At this point, I’m just hoping the list moves on soon!

I've never sat and listened to an entire White Stripes album, so this will be fun (I hope). I immediately hear the early version of his sound. More garage/punky than his recent stuff. After three tracks, I'll say that I like the music Jack White made with The Raconteurs better. After eight songs, make that much much better. WE'RE GOING TO BE FRIENDS, a nice little ditty, is really the only song I would listen to again. Here, White's voice echoes McCartney (which probably everyone in the world has already noted). I find it difficult to rate this album. Although garage rock in general and The White Stripes in particular have a high coolness factor, I hadn't realized how bad the production actually is. Yes, I know that this is part of the concept, but after three or four songs, the imprecise timing really annoyed me. I'm giving it a second star for coolness, but honestly, almost 25 years later, this album is pretty rubbish.

I have successfully outran this album for 24 years, and today I lost. There are some tracks I’ve discovered through the years that are ok in small doses, but I knew in my heart I wouldn’t enjoy more of it— and I was right. I realize this is probably done on purpose, but Meg White’s drumming is so fucking bad. It’s so bad. It sets my teeth on edge. I hate it so much.

2 stars I’ve made attempts to listen to this album in full for 15 years. You’d think it’s a long double album or something, but it’s a fairly short 40 minutes. It starts out strong and promising. But then it kind of just becomes more of the same or less interesting. After a while I’d end up turning it off and not returning to it for years. I finally got through the whole thing for this, but even that wasn’t in one sitting. I could probably get through it in one sitting- it’s not unbearable or anything. But I just don’t find myself wanting to. So that says a lot to me.

40 minutes of the same exact sound

You know what yeah I was so ready to give this a 1 star and slag it off ruthlessly, but actually it did grow on me a tiny bit as it went on and some of the guitar tones were beautiful. I can even imagine a world in which one day I may listen to it again. But overall: I just don’t get it.

When I hear the White Stripes I always think "this is pretty good stuff"...but then I never go back for more. I don't dislike it but it just doesn't draw me in. I couldn't tell you a single song by them except for Seven Nation Army because everyone knows that one.

Tedious, ponderous, soulless

Well, I was disappointed with this. Most of the songs are so stripped down and bare, and sound as if they were recorded in someone's basement. I got the sense while listening that this is what it must be like when your friends tell you, their son is starting a band and they want you to come listen to some of his songs. You'd smile politely and say, "Wow, that's great!" and then go home and think to yourself "meh." Nothing makes me want to listen to these songs again.

The older I get, the more I realise where White Stripes get their ideas from. I used to think it was The Cramps, but now I realise it's also bands like Led Zep. The songs aren't good enough to stand outside of their derivative framing, leaving what feels more like a pastiche than a homage to the history of rock & roll. Not a fan of the whiny voice, either.

Garage rock. Not much to it. In parts, very repetitive.

In highschool (when this came out) I used to keep a physical list of all the CDs I wanted to buy, and this was certainly on that list. Unfortunately, my budget only stretched so far and I never managed to buy this one. Being familiar with all the singles from this album, I was excited to dig into the full album. Sadly, beyond those singles, many of the album tracks never needed to be recorded. It feels like they wrote an incredibly solid EP, and then pulled in some studio goof-arounds to fill out for LP length. “Little Room”? “I Think I Smell a Rat”? Both of these could (should) have been bonus tracks stuck on the end of the last track a la Green Day’s “All By Myself”. Sometimes recording an album in a week isn’t something to brag about. I say all that, and then I wonder if The Black Keys would have made it out of Ohio without the commercial success of The White Stripes …I truly don’t know and it may keep me up tonight. An influential album, to be sure, but I had hoped for some new hidden gems to celebrate.

ok- so honestly i am not the biggest jack white or white stripes fan. but i think that this album is important in the context of its time. it sparked a new era of rock and roll in the early 2000s and many other artists copied the sound of this album. i also think that it is interesting that it was recorded in one week in the studio, that is insane. most songs do sound like they were recorded in less than a week. it is very obvious. "we're going to be friends" and "offend in every way" are my fav songs here. im not a white stripes hater bc i do like their music and music videos but i dont enjoy listening to their whole albums. I am giving this album 2 stars today because it's not my personal type of music that i enjoy listening to. his voice is difficult for me to listen to for extended periods of time. but i would give it 2.5 if possible.

Sometimes is hard to get through the Stratocaster whine, other times just impossible to listen to (e.g. Aluminum). Yet there are some interesting tunes here and there. Luckily the songs are usually short. 4/10

Some good stuff in here, kind of brought down by some of the angst in the lyrics and general 'don't care' attitude.

The first half contained some ok songs with good sound and lyrics. But then the sound gets thinner and the lyrics become juvenile. It is unrefined in a thin and uninteresting way. Some of these concepts of songs could have used more time in the oven.

The problem is that the White Stripes rarely write songs worth hearing, as the albums come across as shallow. What's worth hearing?

Jack white sucks

Garage rock is a big blind spot for me. There are some undeniably good tunes on here, but like most rock of the early aughts not made by QotSA, it doesn't really tickle my fancy. It's bluesy and catchy but not particularly interesting to me. Maybe it's because I've listened to Elephant for years that this doesn't hit as much for me.

I think it’s rock. Personally not really my style but I could see how others like it.

I'll give it up to them for Fell in Love With a Girl and We're Going to Be Friends. Great songs. That said, I don't like The White Stripes. Sad! I pondered why I'm hating for a while this weekend. I think we got off on the wrong foot (but my critiques are also still valid). When I was deep into classic rock in my pre-teens they blew up and I felt it was a sub-par rip off of my favorite bands. Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground sounded like a worse version of Dear Mr. Fantasy to me. My main issue is the decisions they made to stand out were just that, and not artistic decisions to create better music. Not having a bass guitar makes this record worse. I hear a lot of music that is derivative of classic rock songs and some power chord/riff hacks. I also enjoy those songs MORE than the truly original ones (The Union Forever). The red and white theme is also off putting. I want to like this band and compared to their contemporaries, they are objectively good. I'll try to keep an open mind.

I don't really like the White Stripes, but two songs here, 'Fell In Love With a Girl' and 'Hotel Yorba,' I have in constant rotation. The former is an incredible song—it's short, punchy, witty, and catchy, something the rest of this album is NOT. That song feels like a punk song where the band's stripped-down, two-piece, minimalistic sound actually works in their favor. Almost everything else here though sounds like that bastardized blues sound the band goes for. 'We're Going to Be Friends' is the least guilty of this album's worst tropes, and while it sounds as cheesy as a 2000's indie song can possibly sound, I never minded it - it's cute. I find it funny that people dissed Meg White's drumming a lot back in this band's heyday, she does a great job laying down these very simplistic albeit punchy drum patterns - it certainly fits the blues-rock sound the band goes for. And there are some decent riffs here for sure, like on 'Offend In Every Way' and 'I Think I Smell a Rat'. It's just, most of the time, I can't stand Jack White's awkward lead vocals and it soils almost every song here. I did like him on 'The Union Forever' though, where he sounds sort of like Jim Morrison of all people. And with no discernable bassline, things end up sounding flat, and skeletal. There's so much unused space in the mix in most of these songs. It's a unique aesthetic and sound, and if there's something I'll praise The White Stripes endlessly on it's that they certainly stuck out in the 2000s indie scene...but just not in a way I particularly ever cared for.

Right, the one White Stripes album that has any case for being here, in my opinion. Also the only one I think I genuinely liked most of the way through. Let's see if it holds up. Scanning the reviews while I listen, someone says this is the least good of their albums, that just stopped me in my tracks. After this Jack White never made another record with more than like three good songs on it. Still, people have enormous capacity to be hideously wrong about all sorts of things I guess. Hmm this does start to go awry after Fell in Love With a Girl. I remember this feeling from when I last listened to it regularly 20 years ago or so. Yeah, there's a few half decent songs after that but nothing really good. I Can't Wait is probably the best song after Fell In Love with a Girl, its just there's so much that sounds like it but just a bit shitter preceding, it's harder to stand out. So that reviewer may not have been as wrong as I blithely stated above. This record simply follows the same pattern as every record Jack has ever released, it just does it earlier. And yet again, it's 40 minutes long but feels like an hour. How does he do it? Remarkable, the consistency.

This is pure, rough energy. There’s no polish, just raw rock that’s perfectly messy. It doesn’t rely on flashy production; instead, it’s all about that rare, authentic feeling. The album is a reminder that rock, at its heart, doesn’t need any frills to make an impact.

My least favourite of the White Stripes albums featured on the 1001 albums list. I found this seriously underwhelming compared to their other albums I’ve heard. General consensus suggests I am wrong, however I just couldn’t warm to this.

i think i just missed the boat on the white stripes. if i had listened contemporaneously, I'd probably be able to appreciate it more or at least have some nostalgia, but coming to them fresh in the 2020s, having already listened to plenty of blues, 70s garage rock and proto punk, I don't hear anything from them i wouldn't rather get somewhere else. not bad but just doesn't do anything for me. minus 1 point for jack white's nasally voice that feels even more untempered than on later albums (and not in a good way)

I've said it before, I like this sound but I don't know the songs well enough to tell one album of their from another. 2 stars

The album starts out great and is interesting. I have of course heard some of these songs before. By the end of the album I was definitely ready for it to be over. They could have cut the last five or so songs off and the album would have been even better. I'm sure I will hear the hits again but I don't think that I need to listen to the whole album again.

Why is this on a 1001 albums to listen to before you die list? Can't say I liked it.

It’s no seven nation army but it was good. We’re going to be friends was a standout and I feel like the lyrics were creative

There are some riffs in here, but the garage rock aesthetic isn't working for me. Neither are Jack White's vocals which can get a bit too strained. Overall more misses than hits unfortunately. Offend In Every Way is my favorite song, a vaguely country rock sounding riff with the right amount of groove. Some others like Aluminum or This protector see just weird. It's not good.
