Reviews (page 8 of 8)

At least I enjoyed reading the wiki page for this one - wasn't aware Bowie and Iggy had such a close friendship and collaboration. Musically this is just solidifying my dislike of Iggy Pop. His lyrics and vocal melodies are quite low effort, doesn't seem like he's too bothered.

mehh, issa no for me, goed voor achtergrond maar must listen? nomaan

Niet super, veel dezelfde sound. Tiny girls best song

Kinda felt like he wrote Nightclubbing and decided to call it an album. All of the songs just sound the same. Highlight: 2, and 6.

Sister midnight was good. Same with China girl. Good guitar. Fine overall

God first song in and I already know I'm not gonna like this. If I ignore his voice and squint really hard I can kind of see LCD being influenced by this sound.

Didn’t realize China Girl was his song first! All in all this album is ok. I’ve heard better from him.

Really didn't enjoy this album. Not horrible or anything just dull and not particularly musical or interesting.

I can imagine this sounded like nothing else back in 1977. The collaboration with Bowie is obvious; he mostly sounds like Bowie with a harder edge.

I've kind of always thought of Iggy Pop as "unrefined David Bowie", and Pop's take on China Girl is hard for me to listen to, but also illustrates this point. It's not that Iggy Pop isn't great, it's that I'd rather just listen to David Bowie.

this album did not grab me. not a huge fan of Iggy Pop's sound on this one

Does really inspire me

I don’t love it don’t hate it.

Vrij snel maar gestopt met luisteren, dit zal vast een legende zijn van zijn dag maar zieke skip

I know who he is, but I’m not impressed by his debut album.

Pretty weird, iconic, but weird.

Didn't really like it

Dum Dum Boys was fine, but music was too clunky and disjointed for me.

this album is a pain in the ass to listen to because it has interesting ideas and sounds but it ended being fucking annoying and repetitive. did we need more than one iggy pop album on this list? 2 stars!!!!

Apparently Bowie helped make it so that probably why it sucks

Still a no, and this one is not even a bit good.

To me this sounded like uninspired early goth rock...Iggy Poop

Very solid record, 3/5. Unfortunately it loses all its points because of 'Tiny Girls' wtf.

mass production contains possibly the worst bassline ever recorded

The only Iggy pop song I know is Passenger (like most people). I thought to myself 'he's been around for ages, surely he has to have something better than that cause it's absolute shite.' Dear reader I was so wrong. It's all really bad.

sometimes terrible people make great music and you have to grapple with the incongruence of morality and artistry thankfully this braying warbly pedophile had the decency to make bad music and we can sidestep the discomfort

Cold post-punk and proto-industrial rock built on mechanical rhythms, synth pulses, minimal guitars, and detached, baritone vocals moves with stark, hypnotic control. Listening feels like walking through a dim, concrete city at night where every step echoes in empty space. The result is haunting and distinctive at first and ITS rigid repetition feels ultimately boring and I was just hoping the album would end soon

The repeated, blatant pedophilia got me going 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 I’m genuinely concerned that most commenters didn’t notice it.

Hadn’t heard much Iggy Pop before now so I was excited. Quite bluesy, more than I expected. Not really my type of music tbh. Fav song is ‘Nightclubbing’.

I assume every album on this list is here for a reason, so maybe I need to hear from an Iggy Pop fan about this record. I thought it was bad. Some of the songwriting I thought was good, but it turns out that was mostly David Bowie. Iggy, apparently, wrote the lyrics and sang them like a spooky ghost at the end of a tunnel. Also what the hell is going on with Mass Production? That’s legitimately the most annoying song I’ve heard in years.

Liked: Tiny girls Disliked: Songs from this album

I really hate these albums when it's just someone talking or exaggerating their voice. It's really unenjoyable.

Not for me.

Heard Before? Nope. I thought "Lust For Life" was the debut. Notes: - massively front-loaded. side two felt endless. - rhythm section solid and interesting throughout, guitar work very uneven, synths used almost exclusively and pointlessly as pads. - seriously, did Bowie just go home after side one? - also, was side two recorded while Iggy was asleep? Verdict: Go directly to "Lust for Life". Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Listen Again? Yes to the first two tracks, hard no to everything else.

I do not like his vocals whatsoever and all the tracks sound so dull and low energy

Fyren kan knapt synge. Dårlig miksa, og lite interessant musikk. Lite pluss for at det ikke varte for lenge. 1.4/5

I didn't like this at all. I expected more energy from Iggy Pop, but he sounds dull here, and his lyrics just aren't interesting. The tracks plod, plod, plod. The last two songs get a little more interesting, but I probably should have quit by that point. So I'm stunned by all the 5-star reviews here, describing these songs as basically the opposite of what I heard. Amazing how we can all hear music so differently. The reviews informed me this was a collab with David Bowie. I didn't know that until after I listened, and honestly this did not sound like a Bowie record to me at all. There's Bowie I like and Bowie I hate (including his later version of China Girl), but at least all of it is inventive. This was boring.

Nie dla mnie.

Band is good. Voice makes me want to die

Iggy Pop an idiot for making this album

Pretty much awful in every way. Bad singing, badly produced, badly written. And then it went on to influence some of the worst groups ever.

har problem med mycket av ljuddesignen. "grooven" känns ofta stolpiga och påtvingade. det känns som att sångaren bara halvhjärtat sjunger, känslan är på 40-60 %, vilket är så mycket värre än under 25.

Why did he have to name the album after me? 1/5

Totalnie nie moj gust, halasliwe i chaotyczne

hmm.. don't likey

No way. Not for me at all. I've never heard a singer be so bored making a record. And the tuning and vocal warbling. I'm not saying this album is torture but maybe it could be torture. Very low energy, off brand David Bowie.

WHAT A FUCKING IDIOT

Not for me. 1/5

Nonsense

I like my songs with lyrics. I think an instrumental song is better with lyrics than with just instrumentals. This album would be a 4 if it was just instrumentals. That is how bad the lyrics and singing is. Also I had to do a double take when listening to mass production because it sounds like those scenes in games where your character is tripping balls and is going to black out.

Jesus, what happened to Iggy?! It’s like a proto version of Gergen records trying to turn artists like Neil young and John Hilary into electrified rockers - Iggy Pop as New Wave star (down to the hairdo!). Didn’t work

Mmmm… Nah.

3/10 - Before my time Not for me, was a struggle to get all the way through. Reminded me of early Bowie, but even less catchy. Guitar riffs are cool, and a lot of it is just noise to me, and Iggy wails a lot #sorrynotsorry Nightclubbing was on the preshow playlist for Reuben's show in Edinburgh so that was nice to hear again

I did not enjoy that

Drained me of my energy for the day. If something from this popped up on the radio, i would turn the channel. As hard choosing the best song as it was the worst. Best: Worst: Funtime

I can't figure out how anyone could possibly enjoy this record, and yet it's somehow regarded as a masterpiece? Mid tempo slop with musical ideas that couldn't sustain themselves for 30 seconds, let alone the 7 and 8 and a half minute runtimes on some of these songs. Iggy Pop doing his worst David Bowie impression (and while it shouldn't be a shock, it was surprising to me that Bowie was involved on this record), sounding like he's phoning it in the whole time. 90% of this record the music refuses to do anything fun or interesting, with absolutely no drive to it. China Girl and Tiny Girls are the only tracks that have any meat on the bones, and even then they're tepid. This album is the musical equivalent of spoiled milk. It's incredibly off putting, like it was left out in the sun too long and now it's starting to get that stomach churning curdled smell. It's hilarious reading the professional reviews of this album because they're perfectly describing the album yet somehow arriving at the conclusion that it's good? "A necrophiliac's delight!" "[He] doesn't sound alive ... he sounds automated." "Iggy's got the tainted charisma of a dead poet." "A very strange, morbid, obscure and unsettling [album]" Like, my man. Just because it has a good backstory (Iggy and Bowie trying to kick a drug habit) and Bowie is involved doesn't mean you have to like it. You're allowed to say a Bowie project is shit. Be free, rid yourself of this awful album, and you'll never have to listen to it again, lol! Suffice to say. I felt like an Idiot listening to this album.

Not my kind of rock at all. I don't really vibe with hos voice and most of the songs feel to slow in some way. Its hard to explain what I mean, slow songs can be great but these feel slow in a unintended way.

Not an Iggy Pop fan, and this album did not change that

Meh, just kinda droned and was not very enjoyable. Just because it's AN album from a famous artist doesn't mean it belongs here. 1*

1 - I dislike this small niche of rock, and the last song is far too much of it

No thanks. No redeeming qualities on this.

Why do men think they can write about having sex with underage girls in their memoirs like it's somehow admirable for them to admit and reflect on? But hey, "they've changed" or "it was a different time". They haven't, it wasn't. This album is fine out of context - if I was being forced to listen to an Iggy Pop album I would have picked Lust For Life but that's just my personal taste.

Strange musician. Never got into his music.

Annoying voice, annoying album, bad

Found myself sort of making faces throughout this as I contemplated why it was so dull and what the heck Iggy was wittering on about. Also my continued gripe of more than one song being at least 7 minutes long just brought this down even more. Painful.

The album is named after the person who added 95% of the albums on this list.

This is not good.

"At age 23, Pop had a relationship with 13-year-old Sable Starr. Look Away, a documentary about sexual abuse in the rock music industry, is named after an Iggy Pop song about Starr."

Really didn't enjoy this. The production was all over the place, the lyrics were bizarre, vocals were mumbled and mixed poorly. I like Iggy Pop and thing he's a talented guy but this record was just messy, unfocused, and dumb.

Iggy pop has a strange way of singing. Not sure that I like this.

I was not expecting better from Iggy. I get why you put Lust for Life on this list, but a second album from the same year? Complete waste.

Just not really for me.

I don’t like Bowie and I don’t like this. Really lazy stuff.

Nope niks voro mij

Нудная и однообразная музыка. Хоть альбом и на 40 минут я не мог дождаться когда же эта нудятина закончится.

Garbage

Afgezet. Heel herhaaldelijk en kan zijn stemgeluid echt niet verdragen

Jaa dit is dus gewoon niet goed. "The idiot" is de persoon die dit in de lijst heeft gezet.

this is what i imagine chain smoking would sound like if it made music.

Why am I listening to this?

This is absolutely dreadful, I'm not a fan at all, and I love a lot of other Iggy Pop songs! But this is so subdued and grubby sounding, with a really low mix and zero energy. It's utterly depressing and a chore to get through. It sounds like he's singing it while sat half-drunk on the sofa or something. There's nothing dynamic or attention grabbing here, it's just a constant dirge.

you’re not making bowie better, you’re just making iggy pop worse

I feel like an idiot for listening to this

Oh boy. This is not for me. Kind of weird, slow nothingness?

I very much could've gone my life without listening to this album. I'm struggling to pick a song to put on my playlist, if any make the cut. I cant tell if he likes nightclubbing or is making fun of it? I cant tell what of this album is ironic or sarcastic. Bowie's version of china girl, while still containing problems, smartly cuts the uncomfortable feeling part about giving her blue eyes and sort of colonizing her. I dont know at all what he's trynna say in Dum Dum Boys, a fully 7 minute track. It's hard to believe this is the same guy who, years earlier, wrote a song that began "I'm a streetwalkin' cheater with a heart full of napalm." Like, maybe it's just the punk in me that prefers his stooges work, but this is also at least half bowie and i looove a bunch of bowie songs. The music is sort of lethargic and feels like it's creating a larger vibe that it hasnt earned. Like, maybe some of these tracks work behind better lyrics, but you can feel that this was an album of two different influences. When bowie works on his own stuff, the music lines up way better to the lyrics and it makes for some truly wonderful songs. Even when bowie's lyrics are nonsensical, at least they tonally work with the music. I think Sister Midnight goes on the playlist but what in the fuck is the part where he has sex with his mom i think? Weird album, ig. I dont get it.

I’m learning that the rumours about drug use in the 70s were very true.

I’m apprehensive about today’s album. A lot of Iggy Pop that I’ve heard before just sounds like average rock music with dreadful singing. Don’t get me wrong, he seems like a very interesting person and it is fascinating reading about his hijo la, but I’ve always felt his music left plenty to be desired. That being said, I don’t recognise most song titles here so I’d be very happy to be proven wrong. Songs I already knew: Nightclubbing Favourites: Nightclubbing I was unfortunately quite naive to hope for greatness here. This is exactly what my previous experience of Iggy has led me to expect: uninteresting droning music with truly awful vocals. I’m at a loss how Iggy Pop got famous at all, never mind being so highly revered. So much of this album seems like it is trying to annoy the listener, with shoehorned in dissonant synths or poorly tuned instruments. I’m honestly bewildered by this album. Who listened to this and thought it was ever worthwhile listening to again?

мне не понравилось.все.точка.

non déjà vu

tiny girls is a pedo song

Absolute predatory trash. Having a “thing” with a minor isn’t cute.

1/100 puke spewer

didnt like it

Like taking a stroll in knee deep mud.

Just bad...

Bland.

Hate Iggy Pop!

Schlecht wie man ihn kennt.

I was waiting for the album to end from the first song. The only somewhat good song was China Girl but it seems problematic

i really didn't like it very much.

Didn’t enjoy this

Pretty much all wailing slow jams that I got no enjoyment out of with the exception of Funtime. I think this album has its place but it reminds me of New Order’s We All Stand or LCD Soundsystem’s Someone’s Calling Me. Not bad songs but definitely low points on their respective albums.

I understand the appeal to Iggy and the like. This is just NOT my cup of tea. Bowie is pretty much as far as I'll go down this psychedelic glam rabbit hole.

Didn't enjoy this Iggy album either :(

Not good

nothing good. instrumentals shit was irritating
