Reviews (page 7 of 8)
I thought I would like this more. Forgettable to me.
I get the allure of Iggy Pop. The iconoclasm of his whole 'thing' is almost uniformly revered amongst groups of certain musical tastes. Iggy shirtless on stage is everywhere. Musically, though, I never really got onboard. There are gems there. But his music always felt more tied to a time and place that I was not a party to.
meh
This was too artsy for my taste. I read on Wikipedia that the music was composed by David Bowie and Iggy Pop wrote the lyrics to fit, and you can kind of tell. I enjoyed it more than I enjoy David Bowie though, because at least this guy doesn't do the weird Bowie vocal theatrics (to be fair, he does his own weird vocal theatrics, but they're less obnoxious to me)
Something bothered me. I don't know, I felt like this sounded like a smoker that forgot to cough.
China Girl // Dum Dum Boys // 2.5/5
I prefer my Iggy Stooged. This was a lesser version of Iggy and a lesser version of Bowie. Sometimes the combination means that we end up with less.
Första halvan: experimentellt ass Andra halvan: vibear med en del av det? Mycket ångest, post-punk, rätt nice? Jämnar ut sig till en tvåa :)
Mass production tested my patience. 2.
So we’ve heard Iggy Pop with The Stooges and now solo. On the Stooges album he screamed his way through the lyrics, on this album it’s a monotonous drone. Both are terrible. I was also disappointed with Bowie’s music, thought that would elevate this despite the vocals, but it didn’t get there. Wondering how many more albums of Iggy’s were going to have to endure.
This is not good. Bowie is far too heavy-handed with production and overall control, cramping Iggy to shirk away from what makes him great. The result is the tepid vocals, which lack all of the melodic runs you want from Bowie and virtually none of the rasp and edge you want from Iggy. It sounds like either a boring Bowie or a toothless Iggy, neither of which works. All of this layered on top of overindulgent instrumentals. Then I discovered that they recorded this in the Paris studio that popped out the classic Bee Gee’s tracks from the Saturday Night Fever album directly after this album. So, to sum up, although I’m glad they ended up Stayin Alive’, I definitely will not be getting out my Boogie Shoes for this airball.
This didn't work. It has the feel for what it appearently was, two drug addicts embarking on a project in an effort to get clean. I really disliked this, I think mostly because I wanted so much more from these two.
Meh
I wish I liked anything as much as this guy loves shiny leather boots
I'm learning that the vocals of 70's and 80's rock/alternative sour even the best albums for me.
chli gliich alles und so biz düster, dämpft
2.5 Fine but not for me
Absolutely bang average. I was expecting a lot more. If the last track (Mass Production) had come any earlier in the album I would have turned it off and given it 1 star. I'll give it 2 stars though, but that is fucking generous!!!
I generally like Iggy Pop okay, but this didn't do much for me. It felt like it just kinda dragged along, almost as if he was bored while performing. Dum Dum Boys was the standout song for me.
Tuneless and boring
Lmfao this shit sucks
Lots of attitude, full of punk but honestly a bit boring
I thought Iggy Pop was a punk guy. this is weird/ artsy adult contemporary bs. nope.
Mid
🫲🫲🤷♂️
Not a fan. Among other things, I don't care for his voice.
Pretty dull
Wtf was that?
Decent listen, not really my jam
Like Bowie, but without the memorable melodies.
Didn’t hate this but didn’t particularly enjoy it either. Pretty forgettable.
I'm a bit lost for words, so I suppose my review would be that expression he's making on the cover as I gesture at all the other albums I'd rather listen to should you suggest listening to this one.
Didn't connect with this album. Couldn't get into his voice and the music didn't keep me interested.
Meh? Which also kinda looks like the appropriate caption to the album cover.
Eh, just cause Bowie helped produce it - doesn't mean I have to like it
I remain convinced that this album is riding a wave of nostalgia. Believe it or not, good musicians can make mediocre or even bad music. Top Tracks: Sister Midnight
Kinda fun, but distracting and not really my style
Wants to be Bowie, isn't Bowie
Not a big fan.
Eh?
I was never interested in Iggy Pop in the past so this is the first album from him I’ve ever heard. My first impression was this is too much David Bowie in this collab! It just sounded like ripping him off and 1 David Bowie is enough for me. The music wasn’t terrible and I did enjoy some of it. But became cacophonous quickly and became too much noise. A good reminder to not do drugs, kids!
Not really for me. Overly "British", don't really understand the hype.
I can hear the Bowie in the music but Iggy doing his Bowie impersonation was just awful. And honestly not Bowie's best showing on the music side. This was a long 38 minutes. I knew Iggy from the Stooges and he has a famous name but never really listened to his music, I think I will keep it that way. 3.5/10 118/1001
eh, gibt mir nix 2.5/5
Not fantastic
Nothing that stands out to me
Sounds like they were trying something here and it has not paid off 2*
Felt new wave vibes — but still 2
How can I like all of the ingredients and yet not enjoy this cake at all?
Sounded alright
Grating without offering a purpose. Some songs were alright but there was an abrasiveness that only a brit could really appreciate
Weird album. It's very different from the Stooges/Iggy albums we've had. I think the music really outshines he vocals which I found laughable at some points. I laughed all the way through Tiny Girls. Not for me.
Not what I expected. Loved how experimental it was. Did not love the execution until the last few songs. Ends on a high note.
Not for me, didn’t enjoy the pacing or the musicality of any song. Iggy pops voice has always been grating to me
I don’t know, maybe if I listened to this more I would eventually like it but I’m not gonna
Wasn’t that good for me.
It was fine but it didn't capture me
China Girl was co-wtitten with David Bowie who also recorded this song in 1983. Otherwise low key punk.
Too noisy and industrial for me. China Girl, the clear standout song, simply served to remind me of how much better Bowie's version of it is.
Some annoying pieces, such as Mass Production, and kinda repetitive for the most part. 5/10
A couple of good songs, nothing to get excited about
Meh. I like some of Iggy's other stuff better
Some Bowie stuff, written by Bowie, sung by Iggy “Lou Reed” Pop during their little redemption trip together. Sure, you can hear the influence it had on bands like Joy Division. But honestly, even “China Girl” sounds much better when Bowie sings it. Most of the tracks are just slow variations on the same little tune. It gets boring. What’s left is the vibe of the time, a haunted sound and a few scraps of genius Bowie was kind enough to toss to his friend.
I guess I am the idiot for listening to this whole thing ..
Good, but no great songs. I didn't realize how tight he and Bowie were, but it's very obvious by this album.
Eh. I love Iggy and the Stooges but maybe his solo work ain't for "mass production". buh dum tss
Maybe it's my fault but I was expecting something more... fun? I didn't enjoy much of anything in this album.
Maso
#590. Certainly not his best work. 2/5: boring
Weird album that I don't know really worked for me, even after knowing that David Bowie had a role in making this. Landed at 2.5 stars and I usually I round up, but in this case I think this skews closer to a 2.
I had medium-low expectations going into this and those expectations were met perfectly.
Drugs are bad kids!
I thought I would like this more than I actually did...
2.5 stars
Not very good. It's the musical equivalent of eating unseasoned vegetables. Yeah, it's probably good for me, but can I get some salt or something?
Couple of good songs, didn’t like the album that much
This was odd album. I didn't care much for it. The last track was weirdly cool, though.
I imagine this would have been epic to see live on stage, but the album itself feels a little dull to me. Just not my cup of tea.
I've waffled between 2 and 4 stars for this album, but in the end I think it's a bit on the weaker side. I thought "Nightclubbing" was kind of fun for being so deadpan, and I actually really liked "Mass Production," but the rest of this album just didn't land for me.
Better than the stooges album I just listened to, but still meh.
Not for me
I was so ready for a rip-roaring, drugged-out, heavy punk album full of grit and sneer and chaos. This really wasn't that, and I was honestly let down by it. I know this isn't a Stooges album, and that it's his first solo album, but still. This felt like it leaned more into glam, and even some new wave. I just don't think Iggy does those genres nearly as well as punk. It almost felt like he was trying to be David Bowie. So when I read that Bowie produced this album, well, it all fell into place. Nobody does Bowie like Bowie, and this just felt like it was a cheap Bowie imitation. It isn't bad, because even bad Bowie is still good. But I really didn't care about any of the songs that much. It felt like Iggy was bored and so I was, too. Two stars. Standout Tracks: Nightclubbing, Dum Dum Boys
Didn't like it. I was neutral on the first listen but then it was not a good listen on the seccond.
Was expecting better having heard about this album before and loving the stooges. I prefer Bowie's version of China girl. Didn't really do much for me one way or the other.
I was expecting more stooges-like stuff with more electronica mixed in and initially I was only really ticked off by the vocals. I wanted to like this. The vocals are so sedated, like on horse tranquilizer. By the second half the mood is completely gone, everything goes dissonant, even the synthesizers go off key on mass production. I get that this is about sobering up but you don't have to make all of us nauseous.
He has better albums
Yeah not that interesting to me. One decent song I thought but the rest weren’t really doin it.
Irgendie habe ich nur Bowie gehört, und von dem kenne ich schon Besseres.
I wasn't expecting this to sound like this. Iggy's vocals sound like David Bowie on a bunch of these (and I later learned Bowie produced this album so that might be why). I'm now reading that some consider this the first post punk album and it was a major influence for acts like Joy Division and now I understand why I don't like this all that much, though I don't find it as offensively self indulgent as the work of Joy Division.
i'm surprised how much i disliked this, given that i like everyone involved. but boy oh boy did it bother me. it was plodding and ugly and i was never engaged. maybe i just wasn't in the mood. giving it one extra star just cause.
Way too Bowie. I’m glad he got to do his own thing more with Lust for Life
Couldn't get into it. Listened twice through.
Nightclubbing is the best track on this album, followed by Sister Midnight. The rest of it is pretty whatever.
Not my favorite, tried listening to some of the other Number 1's from this artist as well. Not for me.
Nightclubbing was certainly the highlight of this album and I am sure that if I was a counter-culture individual growing up in the late 70s, this album would be on my table constantly. Unfortunately I am not, and so this receives a solid 3/10
The last Stooges album: Excellent. Lust for Life, released later the same year: Some classic songs. This album? Not at all for me. I don’t like postpunk in general and there is none of the Stooges agression nor the Lust for Life catchiness to find on this album. I understand the album’s relevance and influence, but I don’t listen to influence, I listen to good songs
More like Iggy Poop. Lots of versions of the same lame tune. China girl a notable exception.
amerikas Jahn Theighen. not my jam
Fine
1. Dum dum boys 2. Sister midnight 3. Funtime
China Girl almost pulls it up to a 3
Not for me
Never liked Pop much and this album didn't change that.
I dig Iggy Pop, but I did not like this and I didn't think it was very good and I don't think it belongs on the list. 2
Iggy Pop has a signature sound but this missed the mark
Not really my genre.
Hard to listen to it
It must be very gratifying when the person you’ve been copying for years gets so bad with the drugs that he has to start copying you copying the people you started copying after you stopped copying him. Good for David Bowie.
Some of the music wasn't bad, but t I found the vocals pretty boring. This album felt longer than it was and ended with the sounds of keyboards dying. 2/5
Not my vibe, nothing really going on here.
Just fine. Nothing stood out and I didn't hate it
Wasn’t the best
Ugh. Disappointed
I like punk Iggy. Iggy doing his best David Bowie impression? Not so much.
I get it, Iggy Pop used to be an insufferable outrage, a contortion punk performer, purveyed projectile vomit, discharged blood and bodily fluid on the audience, and is still a legend. This record seems like it was just after he had bottomed out, retreated into an apartment in Berlin, and white knuckled his way out of substance abuses with David Bowie. It is generally droll, sedate and demure relative to his persona with the Stooges. I also notice that there is more overlap with Bowie from the era. It's weird to hear the hungover/glam China Girl versus the Bowie cover. It just sounds like he's not having fun again yet.
This was my first Iggy Pop album. It was about as expected. Fun and a little weird. Sounds like something that would be playing in a record store while browsing.
You know this album just wasn’t for me
I don't know what it is about Iggy Pop, but I just can't get into his music. The fact that David Bowie couldn't save my from liking an Iggy Pop album says a lot about my liking for Iggy Pop. The music was great, the bass lines were sharp at times and caught my interest, but I really don't care for Iggy. 2/5
Nothing really stands out about this one.
After the Stooges, Iggy Pop went solo, and this is not the greatest representation of his talent.
Sounds like The Chipmunks on 16 speed
No song really got me excited.
Meh. I don’t see the hype in this guy
Iggy Flop
Borders on drunken rambling and annoying off tempo noise. Not a great combo. 3/10
Didn’t realize this was his debut so I guess that makes sense it’s on here because I couldn’t find any other reason. Confirmed I’m not an Iggy Pop fan, I couldn’t make it through most of these. Nice album title.
Not necessarily a bad album, but much more languid and disengaged than some others we've had from Iggy (and his stooges). You can tell Bowie was involved in that way. Confusing that this is his "debut," though I guess just solo debut. But yeah, I didn't like much here. Favorite tracks: Sister Midnight, Mass Production. Album art: Iggy standing in the rain, gesturing to something we can't see. I've seen this one before, it's alright and I guess memorable enough but doesn't do much for me. Fits the album I guess. 2.5/5
I had high hopes for this album because Iggy Pop has some pretty good hits from back in the day, but this album was very disappointing. Nothing really exciting happened and on top of everything it ended with a really bad song and that just brought my idea of the album really low. I feel like you can't really enjoy this unless you're on drugs, really don't care about music or are an Iggy Pop fan.
Not as good as his higher energy stuff, but still decent. The last song, Mass Production, made me uncomfortable with awful sirens.
Hän sallii itselleen entistä pidemmän jynkytyksen. Kuulostaa ihan hyvältä, mutta sopisiko väliin pari tarttuvampaa rallia? Ihan vain ajatuksen tasolla. 2+
Kinda whacky and not my style
trotos
It was okay. I guess I just don’t get Iggy.
Within maybe four seconds of starting this album, I think to myself "This isn't Iggy Pop, this is David Bowie." I check the album cover. Nope, Iggy Pop. I check the album notes. Produced by Bowie. Composed by Bowie. Lyrics written by Bowie. I guess Iggy Pop sings on it. Narrative around this is that Iggy was recently out of a mental health institute, trying desperately to not have his life amount to nothing, and Bowie essentially gave him this album. I also guess that this is why it has been included in the list, along with apparently every other Bowie album ever made. I don't dislike it, I just wish it had more Iggy flavour. As China Girl finishes, I find myself being moderately pleased that we're towards the end. And boom, Dum Dum Boys wallows langourously with 7¼ minutes. Ulp. The we move on to the thankfully very short "Tiny Girls" - which reads like the most horrific incel screed. Urgh. Nasty. Mass Production slams the lid closed on this album with 8½ minutes of experiment, and it is on many levels the best track of the album. I have to ding a point for Bowie. And I have to ding two for the grimness of the lyrics. Which doesn't leave many to play with.
A poor man’s David Bowie mixed with an American attempt at British underground rock. Wasn’t bad but nothing that special
I could hear the influences of Bowie and Lou Reed. His voice is nothing special. The music was better than I remembered.
Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.
I have very little to say about this album. I was bored and kind of zoned out and didn't pay much attention. Iggy bores me in the same way that Nick Cave does. I don't really like the vocals, and it's all too slow and nothing is musically interesting enough to get me paying attention? It wasn't horrible by any means, but I also didn't feel like it had any positives on this listen-through. 4/10
Decent opener and my hopes were high but soon dashed by some tiring stuff to get through until ‘China Girl’ lifted the spirits.
I enjoyed most of the music, but I just can't do Iggy Pop's voice on this album. It doesn't work, it really drags this album down in my opinion.
- interesting vibe, not really what I was expecting - kinda grimy - 2.5
I'd rather listen to the Stooges. Give me punk rock Iggy not this art rock Iggy. Meh
A full album of these slow and washed-out sounding songs is a bit much.
Meh, this didn't do much for me.
Iggy Pop's The Idiot is a haunting and influential album, marked by its dark, sleazy, and sometimes creepy tones. It's hard to escape the shadow of knowing it was the last thing Ian Curtis listened to before his passing, adding an eerie layer to the listening experience. Tracks like Nightclubbing and Dum Dum Boys exude a gritty atmosphere that has clearly influenced bands like Depeche Mode and She Wants Revenge, whom I enjoy more. The album's brooding ambiance and raw edge set a precedent for the post-punk and new wave movements. While I appreciate its impact and can see its value, the overall vibe isn't entirely to my taste. Nonetheless, The Idiot remains a significant piece in music history, showcasing Iggy Pop's ability to push boundaries and evoke powerful emotions. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 2 STAND OUT TRACK - Nightclubbing
This was fine. A lot of people talking about Bowie's influence on this album, but my main takeaway is that Iggy Pop has a very cool voice.
Not a fan.
Mass production just sounded weird in the middle... not sure what they were trying to do?
The instrumentals were pretty repetitive and the vocals sounded like a drunk David Bowie doing a Jim Morrison impression. Mostly kind of ugly sounding
Underwhelming and not his best work.
Not my thing
..
My kind of weirdo in so many ways, but just not something I would choose to listen to.
Never cared much for solo Iggy. The stooges were great because the music complimented his voice. Iggy Pop does not have a good singing voice, it works for garage rock/punk, but o don’t want to hear him singing slow songs and ballads.
Whiny and annoying. Mass Production forced me to give this 2 stars.
A little too experimental/weird for me.
It's incredible how this album just doesn't make me feel something. It's like listening to white noise. That said, the man's a legend and this album seems to be to? Who knows.
Stop letting British people make music
What a coincidence Iggy and his Stooges yesterday and Iggy Pop today. This album is heavily influenced by David Bowie and if you didn’t know would say it’s one of his. For that reason (although I’m not the biggest Bowie fan) it benefits and is a better album than the Stooges one. But that is relative and doesn’t mean that I like this album. There are one or two melodic passages but like a lot of Bowie influenced albums of this time they suffer from Bowie’s and Iggy’s quest to find new musical directions which to my ears amount to random sounds rather than musical masterpieces. Most interesting aspect of this album was learning how Bowie and Iggy collaborated. A piece of musical history I remember reading about at the time but had forgotten. 2/5 6/4/24
I really don't like Iggy Pop. I don't even really like Bowie that much (with some exceptions). So this album doesn't do much for me. Just kind of... boring
Iggy does his best Bowie impression. Not great.
Hmmh. Musikalisch nicht übel. Nette Texte. Aber Pop‘s Stimme passt einfach nicht …
This one is a little too Bowie for my tastes. It's okay, but not really my jam. Much prefer his second solo album Lust for Life.
I already knew Iggy Pop's work with the Stooges and The Passenger album, but was not previously familiar with this album. It's a bit more out there than I expected. Reading the background it makes sense, but I am not exactly excited to listen to it again any time soon.
Thought I would like this because I knew Iggy pop was an influence upon David Bowie and they had collaborated on things together but sadly I didn't like it.
Did not know China Girl was an Iggy Pop song, though Bowie helped write it. Bowies version is way better, but it is still the best song on this album. Didn't really like The Idiot otherwise.
Fuck this dork
Not for me. I enjoyed the weirder more experimental sounds in spots but overall just sounded like Iggy kinda talking over odd instrumentals.
China girl is good but the rest is tiresome
Good background music but I feel like I don't get "it"
Not the biggest fan of this album. I thought it was decent but could not get into it.
Viel Musik habe ich von Iggy Pop bisher nicht gehört. Interessant, dass mir China Girl von Bowie bekannter war.
This was not my favorite. I don’t like his voice, I couldn’t make out many of the lyrics, and the music didn’t grab me. I didn’t actively hate it but I never need to listen to this again.
Thought I’d like this more. The Stooges were too out there for my tastes and this solo disk as a collaboration with Bowie seemed more promising. Some Ok stuff on side one, but side two was meh.
Iggy pop conosco già ma penso solo alcune canzoni. Mi ha colpito molto la canzone "china girl". In certe canzoni non mi piace la sua voce. Non mi piace "mass production", la trovo un po' ripetitiva. Non riascolterei l'album per intero.
Like all Iggy stuff after the Stooges, this was a bit disappointing. Dunno what drugs he was on but just seems a self-indulgent mess tbh. 2.5*
It gets an extra point for being so Bowie but I just don't like this. I think Iggy Pop would go on to do much better stuff than this.
Not sure I’ve ever heard this like before, and I don’t think it’s for me
Not my style and very unfinished feel
not mine
Not my cup of tea… the vocals are monotone vibrato which sadly I could not vibe with, the production was decent, lyrics are good at best and then also show the sign of the times at other points. Favourite songs: Tiny Girls, Mass Production Worst Song: Nightclubbing
Not good. Sorry Iggy.
A bit weird, but ok I guess. Didn't age well, as with most Rock from 70s era
Iggy Pop consistently bores me. I don't know why. I feel like if you sat me down on a couch, gave me an SM57 and oversaturated the mic, I could sit and crank out these tunes without even having to get up on my feet. Maybe it's the period of time? This was harder in the 70's? It just doesn't do much for me. It sounds like he's sitting on a couch and reading from a notebook. Even the more energetic songs lack energy in the vocals. I know he's known as a punky artsy guy, but I'm always surprised when I hear Iggy Pop's music and remember how monotone it can get. You have to wait until "China Girl" to get some of his wailing, but it takes so long to get there and then when it does it comes and goes and he goes right back to his drunkenly warbling. Not my favorite, and went by very quickly.
This is David Bowie by another name.
Why this album?!
He gross
meh
I guess Iggy is more "Rock n Roll" in personality and not really music wise. It's a decent album but was hoping for more of a kick.
A collaboration between two icons of the age, Iggy and Bowie.... what could go wrong? Unfortunately, to my ear, this ends up being a watered down version of both. I can see what they were trying, and I'm glad they did....this could have been amazing! It just didn't work for me.
Vaag album klonk de gehele tijd alsof ze net compleet dronken een jamsessie hadden rond een uurtjenof 4 in de ochtend.
Why does he remind me of David Bowie?
Blind album, know the artist. I feel like this is a slower rock/blues, and its funny cause I feel my self falling asleep to the song Nightclubbing
Too much Bowie, not enough punk.
Not a huge fan of the punk sound. Why was this guy popular?
A solid album, but not particularly to my taste at the moment. I appreciate the experimental, lo-fi production and composition and there are times in my life where I would have loved this album. I appreciate it, but it's not my favourite.
It doesn’t sound like something groundbreaking. Also the roughness doesn‘t swing my opinion to „oh wow, what a milestone!“.
I was a bit hopeful for this album, but I knew I probably wasn't gonna be crazy about it. I like the overall dissonant sound of the album, but it's pretty boring. China Girl is good, but it's hard to fully appreciate this one when I like the Bowie version a lot more. A few of the songs are pretty long too, which is part of what made this album a bit of a drag. Perhaps it'd be a three if there were more short tracks rather than having a seven minute and an eight minute song on here. Oh well. My favourite song was China Girl.
Had moments of great tunes, but overall this project fell flat
September 17, 2023 HL: “Sister Midnight”, “China Girl”, “Tiny Girls” Well. I have a new least favourite Iggy Pop album. Also a least favourite Bowie. If Station to Station had icy moments, then The Idiot is freezer burnt. I applaud its unconventional nature though the blend of “krautrock” and Stooges stomping didn’t do a lot for me today. On the fence about “Mass Production”, kind of equal parts hypnotic and nauseating
2/5. While this album wasn’t anything special in my opinion, I did enjoy the song “Mass Production.”
Rather dreary but at least it was brief. The influence of David Bowie is all over this and indicative of his late-70s music. The problem is it is not as good as Bowie's material (including China Girl). Dum Dum Boys quite good, but nothing else sticks out
2 Awright
like a solid 2.5
I want to hold you close ass album
It was okay, rather forgettable. Shows me I enjoy David Bowie and not Iggy Pop.
Sub-Bowie punk pop. Meh.
absolute shit, sounds like when you have a rock song on in the car and you try to ironically mimic the vocals, tiny girls instrumental gave me hope but it was quickly shot down
I was expecting better from Iggy
I believe this was Iggy’s first release since 1973’s “Raw Power” with The Stooges. I really wonder what Stooges fans thought when they first bought this record and threw it on the turntable. I know Bowie had a lot to do with this one. And I’m not a fan of the Berlin-era Bowie to begin with. This record had a Krautrock vibe but way slower and with some electronic elements. Just wasn’t for me. I could hear some Velvet Underground influence as well. I can definitely see how this record would go on to influence many post-punk and new-wave acts of the 80s.
Not my cup of tea.
Certainly can hear that Bowie produced and had a huge influence on this record. Enjoyed a few songs but others fell flat.
Bowie, but not as good.
not really my style
Cranky and didn’t like it
Ei tää iggy taas oikeen lähtenyt. Ei tää oo sentäs niin aineissa tehty mutta ei oikeen erikoinen
Figure 1: Iggy Pop describing his rough Bowie-assisted parkour from proto-punk to post-punk.
I appreciate the musical talent of Iggy Pop, but I just can't tolerate musicians that can't sing.
Much stronger second half of album with exception to last song but overall, not great. Felt like he was trying to be Bowie
1.5 stars. Really didn't dig this. Voice is annoying to listen to, musically it was OK but nothing special.
I was excited because I love Bowie but I found this boring
Pretty interesting instrumentals and production. Iggy Pop's voice is really terrible and I hate it.
Bien. Arranca flojo para mí y se pone mejor al final. Parece un álbum de Bowie
I can't understand a single word he sings... Even the la-la-la song...
He started it all. But i only wanted half.
Not ever remotely what I was expecting from an Iggy Pop album. You can totally hear the Bowie influence here. Love Iggy. Love the Stooges. Didn't love this one very much. Tidbit. We all know the song Passenger. Iggy of course is The Passenger, but did you know that Bowie was the driver?
Well done sucking the soul out of most of this. Basically a Lou/Bowie hybrid. Probably better off just continuing to do heroin and stay away from Europe and Bowie.
Not my favorite iggy pop
под этот альбом повесился Иэн Кертис
The first two songs seemed near identical. I wasn't thrilled with the rest of it.
I'm don't particularly like Iggy Pop's music but because this is produced and composed by Bowie it had a more interesting sound. However, nothing stood out to me and I didn't really like most of the songs.
Didn't particularly enjoy this. I could tell Bowie was involved and kinda felt it would've sounded better if he was performing a lot of the songs. Iggy should've stuck with what he was good at. If they were both sober while making this, they should've stuck to the drugs.
A Bowie album by another name, so I don't really like it I've given this a few goes whilst I've been working today, and it's not growing on me at all. Not awful, but I just don't really like it. 2/5.
Yet another Bowie record. The style suits Pop, Lou-Reed-esque inclinations, and one can hear lots of the goth and industrial to come, but these aren't necessarily benefits, and one wonders why this record is even attributed to Pop. And certainly this doesn't sound like a record to quit drugs by. "Nightclubbing" is a plus track and this version of "China Girl" was certainly to be excelled. But beyond a few other interesting textures, there's not that much here. Which leads one to believe this seems like a plot to get yet another Bowie record in this list when there are already far too many.
I can hear the influence Bowie had on the production, but Iggy's voice just didn't do it for me. The deep growly wobbly tone just wasn't pleasent to listen to unfortunately
Big oof. Famous addicts make an album, and only one seemed to try. Terrible vocals. The music produced by DB is the only good stuff and it’s really not that great. He’s talented but iggy is iffy.
Well, that was disappointing after Lust for Life. Didn't care for this one.
The idiot, the awful.
Never really have Iggy Pop a proper listen to. First half of the album was good but the second half was a big let down. It has potentially opened up new genre of music it has introduced me too. Felt like it was trying to imitate David Bowie’s style however missed the mark. Although it is a good album the fella is a weirdo and the second half was poor.
Listened before: No Enjoyed: Not really Listens: 1 Again the backing music was pretty cool but the singing and lyrics did nothing for me
Not much of a fan. Kind of bland and unexciting.
Weird but dated
Instrumentation is interesting, can’t stand Iggy Pop’s droning vocals.
A few iggy pop songs I like but this album didn’t have many of them, and felt too melancholy overall.
Not my thing
Strange slow and wired.
This was just okay. I get that he's an icon but I don't really understand it.
Beetje wisselend dit. Vond sommige nummers best aardig, maar ook vaak irritant.
It was fine. Not a fan of the vocals for most of it which really overwhelmed some of the songs.
The music was "okay" and the singing was awful. I struggled hard to not give 1 star... I think the sax kept it at 2.
Didn't love it. I'm confused how he came out with this and lust for life in the same year. That seemed like a much greater success musically than this record.
his voice was painful to listen to and added absolutely nothing, instead it made me dislike the album more. i feel like at some points there was some potential but it was ruined before i got the chance to really realize it.
..ehh... I saw Iggy Pop and thought "nah" but I was a bit more interested to listen to this after reading that Bowie wrote the music during his "Low" period (the only Bowie album I've ever really connected with). And...it's...ok. The music isn't quite as mysterious/odd as "Low" but certainly more appealing to me than anything I've heard from The Stooges. On an educational note - I never knew "China Girl" wasn't originally recorded by Bowie. Not that I really connect with either version. I just can't get into this - it's just ok at best, boring in the aggregate, and often worse than ok (that last cut "Mass Production" is just awful. 8+ minutes of droning hideousity that goes absolutely nowhere). Much of it comes down to the fact that I just don't like Iggy's voice at all. It's not that it's not "good" - whatever that might mean - he's distracting and abrasive and maybe that works for harder-edged punk-ish material but it's often off-putting here. On "Dum Dum Boys" he sounds like a wobbly cross between Jim Morrison and Paul Banks (singer for Interpol). I almost liked that song. 3/10 2 stars.
Yeah nah.
Not a fan of his music, just not a great album. 4/10.
Not the Iggy Pop that I'm used to. This was much slower and less aggressive. I know Bowie produced it, but the album sounds like Iggy trying to do Bowie and it just doesn't work for me.
Best Song: Dum Dum Boys. I liked the opening dialogue, leading into a warped and stretched opening that almost sounds like Pink Floyd. Worst Song: Tiny Girls. There is no world in which this song isn't creepy. Also, why is his voice like that? Is he singing from atop a working washing machine? Overall: Discordant in an ugly way. The latter half of "Mass Production" seemed almost designed to annoy.
Definitely still not a fan of Iggy Pop and/or The Stooges. This album was mostly just somewhat noisy, unappealing and uncomfortable without redeeming qualities to speak of. Dum Dum Boys was fine and I liked the saxophone on Tiny Girls.
I am familiar with Iggy Pop but I was not familiar with any of the songs. The album was ok. It is not surprising that David Bowie produced it as it sounds similar to some of Bowie's music. Although nothing is really noteworthy about it.
meh. I like Iggy and all, but this is more just a bad Bowie album.
Okay - bit dull
A weird and mixed bag of tracks in my opinion. I liked "Baby" and "Sister Midnight". But found "Nightclubbing" and "Mass Production" so annoying that I wouldn't want to listen to the album in full again.
Some interesting moments but meh
Not seeing the appeal of this one. All the charm of punk with non of the energy. I was tempted to slip it a cheeky 3 after a couple of decent songs on the second half, but the last track is deeply unpleasant.
Very very uneven album. Understanding this was made with Bowie producing and as a bit of a passion project, I forgive some of its unpolished edges and indulgences, but overall I have to give it a solid "C" grade. It's got some bangers on it (really enjoyed China Girl and Dum Dum Boys) but also some really not fun songs (Funtime, Nightclubbing, Tiny Girls). Sorta like a knock off or so-so cover act of Bowie. (Also as it goes on, Mass Production just gets... so unlistenable... eight minutes?!)
meh, not really my thing. some brass and other instrumentals were nice, the vocals were kinda odd.
Iggy is a legend for a reason. And the reason is The Stooges. Not necessarily his solo work. This album has it's moments, but it's pretty clear that it's a passion project, not a commercial one. None of the songs really pop or sell. This is one of those albums that are good to know about - even if you can only tolerate them once.
Who is that on the cover of this album!? That's Iggy Pop?? It's not just the hair... I'm not sure I've ever seen a picture of Iggy that wasn't bare-chested. Once I got over that shock, I wanted to know where this fit into Iggy's career. We were previously randomly generated the Stooges "Raw Power," so where does this solo album fit in? And on that journey I discovered a deep musical connection I had no idea of - that of Iggy Pop and David Bowie. After Bowie produced "Raw Power," their lives and careers became intertwined, making music together, moving to Europe together, and trying to get clean together. I haven't listened to a whole lot of Bowie (no randomly generated albums yet, so mostly just familiar with the hits), so I'm not well-equipped to recognize his influence on "The Idiot." But apparently it was vast, with the album often referred to as more of a Bowie album than an Iggy album. But whoever it sounds like, I’m not a fan.
Second one was a bit better
Meh
ekki alveg ég
Nightclubbing slapped. Some dope things here
I love Iggy. I love Bowie. I don't care for Iggy simply sounding like Bowie.
more interesting that actually good. It's defo got a mood. 2.
Boring
Didn’t get into it. Possibly just really bothered by China Girl track
Good beat
Upon reading the history, my dislike for this album doesn't really make sense. There's a lot of Bowie influence in this album related to the Berlin Trilogy, of which I sorta liked Low. "The Idiot" misses where Low hits, specifically the instrumental sections. Mass production is a good example of this, where the experimental instrumentals are more jarring than inspiring. Iggy Pop's voice also just sounds off to me in some odd way. Furthermore, Tiny Girls really hits the wrong note with me. I don't quite know why and I don't think it's the intention but to me it just sounds like Iggy wants to be with a girl who's really young
Messy as might be expected but very little of interest.
Not as bad as I’d expected, good in parts but still only 2*
Underwhelmed. Considering it was Iggy Pop I was expecting something more... interesting?
First Listen. Standouts: Nightclubbing, China Girl
I guess this was fine, but didn't grab me as being very interesting. Mr Pop's voice isn't really to my taste either. 2.5/5
When I saw this picture I thought I must be mistaken about who Iggy Pop was, but it turns out I was right and this album cover is probably the last time he ever wore a shirt. It is incredibly easy to know the names of these songs as the lyrics are basically him saying them over and over. Album was not offensively bad or anything, just not my steeze.
This is the type of music I expect to be playing on the stereo when I walk into a room full of people laying on the floor doing heroin. It's not really my style but was an interesting album nonetheless.
Some catchy hooks but most songs are quite forgettable. The final track pulled it back slightly as I do love a rambling jam and I liked the guitar effects.
It's fine but I'm unlikely to listen to it again. Never quite understood the praise for Iggy Pop. Other than The Passenger, his songs don't seem particularly special. Always assumed his popularity was down to his eccentric and extreme on-stage persona rather than his accomplishments as a songwriter, so it's surprising to me that he's included in the top 1001 albums of all time. The highlight was when the album finished and spotify immediately started playing Captain Beefheart
It was alright. Not my favorite
Iggy Pop's debut album with major support from David Bowie. It's an art rock album with many different rock sub-genres, and it was a newish area of music for Iggy Pop. It sounded okay, but it's not the type of music I seek out.
this sounds like all my least favorite bowie songs. it's boring, all the songs feel like they last for double their length.
Raaaarrrrrrrrrrr.
This isn't for me, I don't think. It's more atonal and drugged-up than I prefer. Not the worst music ever, but definitely not my thing.
I'm torn on this album. Some of the songs I really liked and enjoyed as they were original and interesting without being scathing. However, the album is plagued with mediocre progressions and bad mixing. In addition, the singer's voice is difficult to understand at times, and due to the emphasis of it in most of the songs, it bogs them down. Favorite track: China Girl
Album art:3
