Porn for the hip hop crowd. These guys are hornier than Hugh Hefner in the 1970s. That said, the beats are smooth, the grooves are cool. But it's overlong and a slight bit dated. OK but not a classic.

lol i mean, maybe i should have expected this from the album title and cover, but this album is so horny. like obnoxiously so. i like the beats and the samples and the flow is nice, but also like oh my god. from the first track, i was actually kind of expecting to be really into this one, even if it was a bit corny and sexually charged. i didn't mind it at first but starting at "Gutfest '89" which is the so cringey and obnoxious, that it really started bothering me a little. especially with the length of the album, i'm not sure how you rap about sex this much. there's only so much sampled "oohs" i can take.
Surprised to see this album on the list as I always thought of it as a novelty record. Yes, they launched Tupac, but just include more Tupac.

I remember the video with him wearing that big nose and I can't see anything else when I listen to this. Kind of a pervy album though, isn't it.
This album sucks. The content feels immature, and the performance of it feels like the artist is bored while doing it. If the artists themselves can't even enjoy it, why should I?

Nicely funky sampling lots of Funkadelic, and moments of Donna Summer and Chic. Laidback rapping about sex and silliness. Sex Packets is very Prince-like. Enjoyable, but a little silly.

I went in expecting a 3, halfway through was entertained enough to make it a four, and by the end I'm somehow considering giving it a five. The concept of the album was funny and entertaining with the peak being packet man near the end but it was backed up by fucking great beats and production that makes it relistenable. The "main theme" beat on the sex packet song and reprise is super sexy and catchy r&b while other songs like the way we swing and doowutchyalike are just straightforwardly good hip hop tracks. I'm also really glad that there's more outwardly comedic albums on this list (still hoping for weird al). Looking into the wiki more and this launched Tupac's career??? I guess I see where he got the inspiration for Temptations lol.
So much fun, this would surely have been my favourite album if I'd first heard it at 14 or so. Even with more than a few extra years on me, still great. Like the P-funk party style with some interesting production at times
This from another era. Feels like it’s right before the time rap changed from being fun to being fun and silly to grumpy and raw.

The Humpty Dance is always good for a smile but this thing was tough to get through. It's way way way to long and repetitive for me. 2.5
Wel aardig, maar niks aparts
The only thing saving this from a 1 for me is the opener being fun and the beats in general being pretty funky. Almost every song on here overstays it's welcome by a good 2-3 minutes, and the rapping is so basic when at this point you'd already had Rakim, Chuck D, Ice Cube that had pushed the form forward. I was just waiting for it to end by the time it was halfway down. Won't be returning to it any time soon.
Hilariously dumb but also admittedly fun from Humpty Dance to Underwater Rimes to Doowutchyalike, Shock G and crew bring their carefree, hip hop funky jams. It all wraps up with about 12 mins of rapping about the ridiculous premise of lucid dream sex… initiated by sex packets sold on the streets… Again so dumb but it worked for me. 3.5 stars

Okay, I admit that I've never heard of Digital Underground before, despite being a huge fan of music of all genres, including hip-hop. I guess I was a little bit young. But I'm so glad I found them. This record is so awesome; great lyrics and really innovative use of samples throughout, particularly the use of Parliament's "Flash Light", which IS a song I know! Getting some strong DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince vibes from this, but I guess it's just the early 90s production. Favourite tracks: Doowutchyalike, Sex Packets.
80s hip hop just sounds so naive and pleasant in retrospect. This feels like that got halfway through making a concept album about designer drugs and addiction, and then decided to stick a couple of party tunes at the front. It's messy and odd, bit most of the lyrics hold up, and Dowhatchulike and The Humpty Dance are still solid gold bangers. Am I likely to play anything else off here again? Probably not. Still...never looking at a Burger King the same way again.
Some good stuff and quite funny in places. But I felt some of the humor was a bit too cheesy at times, and the songs (and album as a whole) sometimes tended to drag.
I guess this was influential with blending hip hop with more electronica? The playing lyrics are not a new thing and it quickly becomes tiresome... 2

honestly…i saw the run time and i thought oh great…here we go…… but wow i loved every minute of this. funky ass instrumentals with some jazz sprinkled in to support a raunchy yet original concept about sex. as soon as the first track started i knew i was going to love it and i did. gotta give it a five, can’t find a flaw.

Thought the hit "The Humpty Dance" wasn't much to write home about on a forgettable album. Vocals were okay, but beats were boring on ab illicit 90s hip hop record.
Who is Digital Underground? Turns out these guys helped launch 2Pac's career, giving him some of his first credits before a solo career. Unfortunately 2Pac is nowhere to be found on this release, having joined the group on the following EP. Digital Underground is best attributable to core member Shock G, who has the most contributions to this album. He has a clear vision and direction for the group, providing solid funk samples as the group's foundation. While the album's quality is pretty consistent throughout, it's a little too mid-school for my liking and doesn't have enough interesting things going for it to sustain over an hour.
Not bad, as far as rap goes. I tend to like the 80s/90s stuff more anyways.
I must say I love the amount of Golden Age Hip-Hop coming up lately on my project. It went from a genre I was sort of unsure about, to a genre I'm really starting to enjoy. It just has a fun quality that later gangsta rap sort of lacked. This has things I'd generally dislike - it's another "horny" album, this one goes a step further by being a concept album with a very sexual storyline, but it gets a pass because it doesn't take itself seriously at all. In fact it's consistently funny. It's a product of its time, sure. I don't think an album joking about sex for 65 minutes would go down so much today. But what makes it stand the test of time is how listenable it is. The beats are great and the flows are smooth. I do think the first half was better than the second, but it was still great. A real bouncy party of an album. Favourite: The Humpty Dance

I know Digital Underground was important to the evolution of hip hop, but I'm glad that its particular branch of the evolutionary tree turned out to be a dead end and the genre went in other directions. Because it's bad. This is legit awful. The flows are stilted and slow, the rhymes are lame, the subject matter is juvenile, and the beats are amateur. It was such a waste of time that not even the silly nostalgia of "The Humpty Dance" could save it a star.

The "do the dance" first track really set the tone. Dragged on from there. It's complete and utter shit, but I was mildly entertained. 3/5.

I started this thinking it was a bit shite, with the basic flow and lyricism that was typical of early hip-hop. However it grew on me more as the album progressed, securing it's place in the higher echelons of a 3

I had only ever listened to the Humpty Dance and just assumed the rest of this album was garbage. I was wrong. I'm not sure it's "iconic" or overly influential, but it's a lot better than I thought it would be. Solid jams from top to bottom.

My friend and I were driving as I put this on and when it started we both said "Hey some old school". Upon checking we learned it was "GoldenAge". Oh well, off to horse riding shaking our heads at our lack of knowledge of hip hop subgenres. This was was fun - juvenile but fun. It kind of reminded me of The Who Sell out with the pseudo talk show format.
I owned this back in the day. I don't play the whole album much, but put the hits onto mixtapes. "Humpty Dance" is a classic. I like the big bass and the lyrics sound reminiscent of Weird Al. I don't mind rappers with a sense of humour. "Doowutchalike", which was released as a single, I think a few months earlier, is also fun. I love the Hendrix sample in song 2 (from "Who Knows", such a great song, wondering if JG still has the album) and the frequent nods to 70s funk. On the minus side there are way too many 6minute + songs, otherwise a 4.
I get that this album was highly influential and was sampled to death, but maaan, does it ever sound dated now. This is more whimsical and less in your face than say NWA or Public Image so its more listenable, but at over an hour of it gets a bit tiresome.

Weird! At first I thought this was a strange choice for the list and thought it middle-of-the-road fun—a very solid hip-hop album and a nice alternative choice but nothing groundbreaking for 1990. But then I found out it was a concept album about “a pharmaceutical substance that comes in a condom-sized package and is developed by the government to provide its users with a satisfying sexual experience in situations where the normal attainment of such experiences would be counter-productive to the mission at hand.” (!?) And then I saw all the P-Funk samples and general dedication the Digital Underground maintains for this wildly unique blend of sci-fi, dance, funk, rap, and absurdity. Something only Oakland boys could come up with. So it’s growing on me as I’m beginning to pick out the samples, comedy, and thematic content of the lyrics. Still surprised to see it on this list. And there are a few lyrical moments that very-much cringe. But a very fine hip-hop—and a great alternative hip-hop—record nonetheless. Honestly, I’m just stoked we got an alt hip-hop album at all! 3/5.
this is pretty hilarious, and got more hilarious the more I listened to it. It's campy, fun, and is a nice counterpoint to the 90's conscious rap we've been getting a lot of. I like that they're just trying to have a good time but also give it some campy backstory. Love my hip hop that's like this. 3/5

I feel like this kinda music you really had to be there when it was released. When I listen to it now it reminds me of that Donald Glover stand up comedy bit where he talks about how all old school hip hop is just guys going like "well I went to the hat store and I got myself a hat."

I hadn't heard this before, so I didn't really know what I was in for. The cover art and concept are mad but it really works. I love the growly bass on The Humpty Dance and a few other songs. It's a really groovy and funny album throughout, really creative too. The concept makes me think of the Fifth Element, Sex Packets (and this album) sound like something that could exist in that universe.
This was genuinely so much fun to listen to. Some of the lyrics are just mad and I love how unserious it is. 10/10 story telling too.

I know and love The Humpty Dance, it's such a fun and silly song. The rest of the album is pretty old school hip hop, but hornier. The most fascinating part is I learned it's a concept album about 'sex packets' given out to astronauts so they can get off in space, mostly saved for the last part of the album. I enjoy the more lightheartedness than rap that would follow. I found the songs more repetitive and too long, but the samples and some lyrics are great.
Classic album. I had it on cassette back in the day, and this was a fun trip back in time. "The Humpty Dance" is legendary, but there's plenty more to like here. "Freaks of the Industry" and "Doowutchyalike" are particularly memorable, and "Underwater Rimes" is a silly track that's always reminded me of Kip Addotta's pun-filled "Wet Dream." And that's one of the thing's that sets the Underground apart from most hip-hop acts; in an age where gangsta rap was starting to take hold of the industry, they weren't afraid to ditch the bravado, slap on a giant fake nose, and get goofy with it. Gotta love it.
Reminds me of the late 80s & the school dances I'd go. Loved doing the Humpty Dance. Good times.

This is a hard album to rate. It's definitely an interesting and unique concept for an album. And I like some of the beats. The problem is sometimes I'm kind of a prude, and listening to an entire album about objectifying women and having sex is not exactly my idea of fun. It was a bit uncomfortable to listen to. Even so, the album did make me laugh a few times. I can't say I truly disliked my time with it, but I don't have any urge to relisten to this. My favourite song was Sex Packets.

Like many grooves. Lyrics leave a lot to be desired, especially when the “sex packets” that are referenced over and over and over again seem to be done kind of date rape drug.
Fun, creative, catchy, passionate
One of the most challenging listens of the project so far, and not in a constructive or positive way. This thing is dripping in enough cheese to give any person a coronary - the bars are consistently corny, creepy, or both, leading to a steady level of baseline cringe that fluctuates from unbearable to uncomfortable. The beats offer no salvation as they opt to instead beat several 1-2 second samples out to 4-7 minutes at a time, meaning the backing tracks are at best stale and at worst infuriating. There’s one track that has some sort of female moaning/vocalizing looping over and over for the entire runtime, and it’s probably the most annoying track I’ve listened to out of nearly 700 albums on this list so far. This is not some nostalgic relic worth revisiting, it’s just plain bad and should remain firmly in the 90s.
I quite liked this to begin with. A concept album about a sexy sex pill is an original, amusing and pretty weird idea. However, the novelty wore off fairly quickly, as it most likely would with the fictional medication. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: The Humpty Dance Date listened: 22/02/23

2nd hiphop album in a row. too much . And Im incredulous at the title this time. It sounds like a gangsters clubhouse
With a hip hop album from this time period, there are bound to be more than a few incredibly dated moments. This album is no exception. It is however, a very fun album that samples prodigiously from funk and soul records giving Digital Underground a very tangible connection to the music they are descended from. Lyrically, this album is all over the place. I laughed out loud at several points, and found the sex packets song cycle a bit out of place interesting though it was. I suppose that's why this album is on this list; it is a fascinating slice of hip hop history.
Outside of the popular "The Humpty Dance" this just wasn't very good. Early hip hop that just hasn't aged very well. It's crazy to see how far hip hop would evolve in a handful of years to the mid-90s, knowing what we know now. 4/10.
Just one long song that never changed
As a big-nosed heterosexual man, I aspire to novelty song ‘The Humpty Dance’’s titular character’s self-proclaimed sexual magnetism and at my best moments feel his joie de vivre; great and good-humoured song. The rest however, isn’t so fun, the group’s g-funk is better than most but their misogyny is worse-than-average for the genre. Title song ‘Sex Packets’ is awful and overdone nonsense about some fictitious orgasm drug but the shorter ‘Packet Man’ manages to get some humour out of the same nonsense.

It's probably a good thing that I don't speak English, I've got a feeling that the lyrics are terrible. The rhymes are basic. Underwater Rimes (Remix) really stands out. Yeah, it gets better after that one, no longer sounds like a freestyle, and the lyrics I'm able to understand are pretty funny. Studymin would approve

Digital underground- So funk heavy with all the parliament samples. I think they sample flashlight in at least 3 songs. Love when he sings the bass line on humpty dance. Feels live like a jam or party but the songs all felt a bit too long.

I only know Digital Underground for two things: The Humpty Dance and that Tupac Shakur was once in the group. So, when this album came up in the generator, I was perplexed. Was there more to Humpty than meets the eye that justified this album placement here? Yes and no. Yes because, at times, the album's attempts at diversifying their sound (whenever it comes) are a bit admirable and no because parts of the album (Doowutchyalike and its blink-and-you-miss advocating for sexual assault in particular) haven't aged well. Everything about it feels interminable and a good twenty minutes too long and the album's goofiness brings it down a couple of pegs. I wish I can understand why it's on this list when it's really not that essential. P.S. Gutfest '89 would have been the most awesome festival ever had it actually happened. P.P.S. Too loooooong. I knew an hour was going to be too long from the moment I clicked on the first song. If they had cut this down, getting rid of some of the weaker songs, to a nice 37 minutes, it'd be a better album. Doesn't age particularly well, at least that's my opinion. Some of this is just stupid and dumbed down. Like the emergence of "MC Blowfish." Give me a break, please. At times it feels like these people just learned that words can rhyme, because they came up with some of the most basic and boring rhymes I can imagine. Couldn't stand it after about 30 minutes of listening.

I’ve just never been into the jocular vibe in hip-hop especially when that’s intermingled with misogyny. The best songs are their most direct, like “Freaks of the Industry” etc.

A little slow or repetitive at time with the songs being so long, but also really fun and hilarious as well. Pretty good flows and rhymes keep it interesting even with some sort of bland production. 6/10

Vaguest awareness of this group from the Humpty Dance which was big for a while in my late high school/early college days. I don’t recall noting anything about it at the time except the chorus which seemed repetitive and inane to me. It’s interesting to listen to it again decades later, and with a lot more hip hop listening under my belt, and realize how funny and satirical and self-aware the lyrics are. The whole album is pretty funny actually, and lyrically reminiscent to me of subversive avant-rock material like Beefheart or Zappa. Wrapping up a long album with a 15 minute suite about an alternative reality where there’s a pill that makes you have an intense imaginary sexual experience is an... interesting choice. Overall I liked it, though the minimalist backing and repetitive nature of a lot of he songs left me feeling like it ran longer than it needed to to make its point.

A bit of a grind to get through this album. Humpty Dance is creative and fun, but certainly a bit long in the tooth now. It is creative at times, but the smooth soft talking rapping approach with a funk twang doesn't do it for me. Wanted to turn it off.

Wish I’d heard these guys in 1990! Sadly (?), my limited listening time today was focused on getting geared up for the Oils’ last ever show at the Palais. But from what I heard, I’ll be back to hear the rest.
I knew nothing about the band or the album. And when listening to the opening track, The Humpty Dance, I wasn’t sure I wanted to hear much more. Then the Hendrix sample on The Way We Swing got me totally interested & I have to say I loved this album. The title track is terrific, as is Rhymin On The Funk, both with Parliament samples, and I was also taken by Underwater Rimes, which felt like a hip-hop version of The B-52’s Rock Lobster. The impersonation of Edward G. Robinson’s gangster persona is a scream. And I loved the final track, Doowutchyalike. It said a lot about the band’s approach to music, as well as life. This is one of the most soulful hip-hop albums I’ve ever heard. A great listen.
Obviously, this album is aimed at having fun. I particularly enjoyed Humpty Dance (a classic party jam) and the way we swing (heavily built around a Jimi Hendrix sample. I love the way they scratch the original guitar solo into the song). Funky and fun, I found the adolescent sexual humour a little wearing after a while. Great singles, but hard to sustain for 70+ minutes. This could have been a really tight 40 minutes record. At least there are no skits.

Best Song: The Humpty Dance. Yeah it feels silly, but it's still better than the rest of the awkward, overly serious (and overly long) tracks on the album. Worst Song: Freaks of the Industry. My campaign against sex moans as background music continues. This shit is just awkward, not interesting. Like, did at any point during writing/recording did this group of dudes question themselves as they went through line after line of corny sex poetry? Overall: What is it about hip hop from this era that always sounds like it's being performed by Snagglepuss? The best parts of this album are its samples.
Tracks are repetitive, and way too long. Plenty of rap albums around this time that were way better.

I like this album, i can see myself getting into more old school hiphop. Also, Freaks of the industry had me rolling.
Funky sound, but unquestionably dated. The lyrics are so intentionally over-the-top that it's undeniably funny for a while, but it goes on for far too long to maintain my amusement. I would never listen to this again, and won't remember it for long, but at least it got a few smirks out of me while it lasted. Probably the strangest concept album I have ever listened to. The funky basslines on this thing are INSANE Some of the bars on this album are so crazy (i havent decided if its a good thing or bad thing yet) I feel like this album in general didnt age amazingly, it is absolutely a staple of its era, though. You wouldn't see anyone making something like this in 2022 Barely any of the bars that I will remember going forward have aged well at all I can see the influence this album has in later artists such as Del The Funky Homosapien I just dont think this album has aged well, I do like the instrumentals for almost every track though 5/10
LOL well what a journey this was. Finding it hard to believe this was a contender with other similar era of hip hop. Major cringe some of the lyrics, particularly the sex quiz one and all the words about slamming pussy etc etc. Luke enjoyed the one about Packet Man as he thought it had a jazzy riff

I think the only song on here that will be any good is 'Humpty Dance'. Let's see. Yeah, I think that's it. I do like the production on it - there's some depth to these beats. I'll give this one extra points for being a concept album about a drug that makes astronauts orgasm? And the song Gutfest '89 also gets some extra points for bein' real gross. But that still only adds up to a 3.
Ayoooo who up listening to Sex Packets in 2022?
My favorite thing about this album is that it does have moments of gangsta rap, but it's only just a guy rapping in a 1920s movie gangster voice. Lol. How did that not take off?? I mean, I suppose there's probably some article somewhere about how this album is significant and important in helping set the stage for a form of alternative hip hop. But I don't know that this alone makes it worthy of being on this list. Some of these songs go on forever and none of it really feels essential aside from the gimmicky opener, which is at least catchy. Surely there are other records in this lane that are better from start to finish. That said I would totally wear a Gutfest '89 t-shirt.

Tiene buenos sampleos y buen rappeo pero a cada canción podemos recortar minuto y medio sin problema. Al final se me hizo tedioso.
A ratos se pone interesante y hasta llegué a pensar "ah, quizá hay rap que si me gusta" pero luego se queda ahí atorado por horas y cansa y hasta se vuelve como un ruido blanco de fondo, y entonces ya no me encanta. 2.5 que sube a 3 no más de buen pedo.

There sure aren't all that many hip hop concept albums, and this might even be the first. The first few tracks had me questioning my sanity. Is this ICP? Nope. ICP don't rap about underwater concerts. With 30 years reflection, this seems - well - kinda childish. I'd imagine that some 14 year olds would snigger along to the lyrics. Despite that, it's classic hip hop done actually pretty well, with good beats and excellent flow. Sure, some tracks needed the judicious application of the "skip" button but in the main, I quite enjoyed it.
As someone who really doesn't like rap, I found this one of the most listenable rap albums I've heard since a long time. Not something I'd actively listen to, but I listened from start to finish without skipping or getting bothered at all. The lyrics I paid attention to were funny.
I thought I would enjoy this, but the songs are just too long. It's still pretty good, but I don't see myself ever going back to it and listening to the entire album again. "The Humpty Dance" is a classic, no doubt. Most songs are really good even, but for some reason all of them are over 5 minutes long (up to 9 minutes). They lose their steam halfway through - "Doowutchyalike" should have really just ended on that fake fade-out gag. Loved the concept of "sex packets". It's like they made a whole album based on some random Family Guy cutaway joke. Also "MC Blowfish"? How the fuck do you come up with that. How do you drag that concept out of your head. I love it.

It's quite fun for a while, but I lost interest in it pretty quickly - an hour of this stuff is just too much. Probably would've stepped up to 3 had it been a tighter 35-45 minutes, but there's too much filler (both in the album as a whole and within a lot of the individual tracks), so it's a 2. Won't ever put it on again, I imagine, but don't regret listening to it.

Strong an consistent rap album from the golden age that i was not familiar with in advance.
The group, mostly Shock G by the sound of it, produce sex-raps in a low-gonzoness/high-legibility vein. That niche and the unique sound of the thing quickly earned my respect. That said, I continue to not get the p-funk beats which underlie Sex Packets: Just too slow and low-fi. The listening experience was a descent into discomfort.
Not sure if this one deserves a spot on the list. I always hope for the best when it's not just an album I've never heard of, but a music act as well. The production is clean and ahead of it's time on some tracks, but overall it's corny and embarrassing lyrics had me rolling my eyes very early in the run-time. 1.5/5
I wasn't really feeling this one. Overlong, a little one-dimensional, kinda corny, and maybe kind of shallow? It doesn't feel as essential, innovative, or fresh as a lot of its contemporaries that have found their way onto this list. The beats are often pretty solid, but I'm not loving the rhymes or flows. "The Humpty Dance" is a jam for sure, though.
West Coast hip hop. Early 90's. Little funky and Fresh Prince-y. Some funny lines... some weird ones too. My interest lagged off before the last few songs but I'm also feeling kinda off today so that could be me, or the album. Didn't hate it either way.

This album definitely grew on me as it went on. The songs do run a bit long for no good reason, but overall this album was a very fun listen.

Morning wood. Pitching a tent. Stimulus package. You’ve heard of mockumentaries, right? Well, I think this is the first mockcept LP I’ve ever heard. Digital Underground describes this as a concept album about a pharmaceutical substance called a Sex Packet that provides a good sexual experience ‘where the normal attainment of such experiences would be counter-productive to the mission at hand.’ Said Sex Packet is featured on the cover, glowing blue, and the final several tracks in particular laud its virtues. Indeed, the majority of rhymes on 'Sex Packets' are a celebration… no, more accurately, a congratulation of the artists’ own sexual prowess. On a couple of the other tracks, we find Digital Underground further boasting on their rapping skills. And finally, on ‘Underwater Rimes,’ they brag about both: rappin’ and humpin’! Look, this is what it is, and ain’t what it ain’t. Its intended as good fun, in the moment. There’s no consideration of the consequences of all this humpin’, nor any significant statements about their experience as African-Americans in 1990. It ain’t Public Enemy or N.W.A, in other words. But hey, there’s a place for that in hip-hop. I can only sustain, for a while, the kind of rapt attention that an artist like Bob Dylan requires. Eventually, I gotta pogo to a little Ramones, too, just for joyful relief. Lyrics aside, this is a funky, funky LP. Loved the music, loved the meter of the rhymin’, all that ‘New Jazz.’ Be great for a party, with the bass a thumpin’, and afterwards when I gets to the humpin’. 3 outta 5. Why not?
An album that doesn't get enough praise from the golden era / sample era of hip hop. I think most tracks could shave a minute or so off of them.

This was a brutal listen as in boring. I don't get it but me and hip hop have a love/hate relationship.
The running time of 65 minutes makes this album bloated. A couple of good songs and I suppose the Sex Packets tracks at the end was an attempt at a funny narrative, esp. in the era of gangsta rap, but ultimately isn't that successful.
I sat in this album for weeks before I listened because I couldn’t imagine the album famous for The Humpty Dance would be particularly good, but it was actually decent. There were some clever rhymes but the general feel was like a knock-off De La Soul. Even if I didn’t think it was GREAT hip hop, it was enjoyable. 3.5/5 stars

Great album - really funky early hip hop, with the iconic Humpty Dance and several other head bobbing tracks. Definitely some mature subject matter, but absent a lot of the "I'm going to kill everyone" lyricism of the genre from later in the decade.
There are some really fun moments on this album, and I was really grooving to them. "Humpty Dance" is, as always, a fun funky classic. I like the way they swing on "The Way We Swing" (schwing!). "Rhymin' on the Funk" and "Underwater Rimes" continued the fun and I was really getting into this album. I liked how they seemed to really be having fun with this and not taking themselves too seriously. (Did I wince several times? You bet. It's early 90s hip hop. You're gonna wince.) The rest of it, however, while always funky, didn't feel as fun. "The Danger Zone" seemed out of place. Grim. By the time it got to "Freaks of the Industry" it was a little cringy. And then came the songs about the titular ;-) sex packets that were just...strange and creepy. Anyway, it's hard to rate because I did move to this music and I liked their sound so much. I just don't wanna hear about the underage fetish sex packets anymore.
I knew Humpty, but for the rest of this album, it was a first. It really grabbed my attention…for a while. The funky beats with the silly raps are very 90s danceable. I enjoyed the nostalgia of the sound. The bulk of the sexual themes were mostly uninteresting to me, and after a while it felt like it was too drawn out. I connected with many of the samples, and I enjoyed how DU used them…but then I just wanted to go listen to the sources of the samples.
Welllllllllllll...I was having a pretty good time at this party. I've always liked The Humpty Dance. It's cheeky and fun. The next track talks about verbal rape but ok, I guess that's just some macho posturing and it was 1990 and all. Rhymin' on the Funk, The New Jazz, and Underwater Rimes are fine with their "smooth flow" and "dope rhymes" such as "mobster" and "lobster." (Sincerely! Not sarcasm! The quotes are from the album!) These guys mostly seem silly and fun. And then...the last half of the record felt like I was listening to a joke where I wasn't exactly the punchline but the joke really wasn't meant for my ears (and maybe as a woman, I was punchline-adjacent). I won't say I was offended by all the sex talk --- I'm a feminist killjoy, not a prude --- but I didn't enjoy it and wanted to leave the party. I'll just take The Humpty Dance and go.
The first several songs were pretty good, albeit with some usual braggy rap that went on a little too long for my taste. “The Way We Swing” was pretty clever musically and I thought they were pretty funny in “Underwater Rimes.” So after song 5 I thought this album might be a surprise. Things went south quickly. “Gutfest ‘89” is definitely an event to avoid. Pretty much everything else seems kind of toxic and awful. I was glad when it was over. I did like two songs. But it left me nauseous and I have no interest in hearing this album again.

Some funk, some New Jack sound, love Shock G’s smooth voice/raps—gives me jazz hip hop/alt hip hop feels (a La Digable Planets, Tribe Called Quest, US3 etc). Very listenable—the lyrics/tracks don’t make come back though.

Definitely the raunchiest album I have had on this list so far. I am not a fan of rap in general, but I could still appreciate some of the stuff they were trying to do here. Most of it doesn't feel dated, but there are some moments that definitely pinpoint this album to the year 1990. On the first listen, I enjoyed the The Humpty Dance (catchy) and Freaks of the Industry (smooth) the most, but they are songs that I don't see wanting to listen to again in the future. The main thing that brings this album down for me is its length; it has no right to be over an hour long. Digital Underground's debut hip-hop album. It performed well commercially, as a result of its singles becoming club hits, and the album was able to achieve platinum certification. This time period was arguably the best for lyricists and writers of hip-hop/rap albums - this album being a good example. Simple club beats with great-rhyming lyrics about sex and partying compose this album and it was fun to listen to.
