This stuff just doesn't really grab me.

Another turd where my favorite song was the final track because the assault on my ears would soon be over. The strange noise coming from my refrigerator is equally as pleasurable to listen to

I know I'm supposed to love AF. I know they've won awards, I know they're very clever, and I know the critics love them. But. I. Just. Can't. Don't know if it's that irritating shuffle beat they love to use. Or a complete absence of emotion in the music. But there we go. Next.

While I rate this a decent enough album that doesn't hurt one and can run in the background, there's something mildly annoying about it that's typical for indie rock.

I never was the biggest Funeral fan, but when I was reminded of this album through Fantano's most recent "Overrated and Underrated" video I knew I had to give this another chance to see just how poorly this album has aged in my mind as well. To my complete surprise I think Melon might have actually been onto something. It feels very dry in a lot of spots that I originally loved and thought were pretty exciting, now it feels like a memory I wish lived up to how it originally felt. All of the moments this album helped create and inspire afterwards have been washed down to pieces of what they used to be by 20 years of aging gone horribly for this album. Not even the once incredible Neighborhood #1 has survived the onslaught of aging as well as I want it to, it was once a go to winter staple for me and now it feels like a fading memory. Man I wish I liked this more, but I think this album will continue to fall for me as time goes on as it truly isn't as remarkable as many people make it out to be anymore. Instead of being a spectacle it once was, it now lives in the shadows of other albums it inspired.

Listened to this a LOT in Karl's company. There are some good songs but none that I put into regular rotation.

I don't get why this was so highly praised. It's totally overrated. The production is mediocre at best (well, it cost just 10K), especially the vocal production. The female voice doesn't fit well with the male one. There were some disharmonies on several tracks that I doubt were intended. Not one track had me tapping my foot or bopping my head, like The Suburbs (which is no longer in the current version of the book), their third album.

Uhhhh I mean this is fine. I think it has some sins to answer for regarding being a precursor to the ho hey Obama era music that we're currently kind of hating on as a society (probably ensuring its resurgence around 2028) and just being like annoying Pitchfork darling fodder. I didn't particularly care for it.

It's fine, I guess? For me, it sounds like run-of-the-mill early 00's indie. And I remember the singer being a bastard?

Was in high school when this came out and wasnt sure why I'd never heard of it. After listening I know why...it's not for me. It's from a time Rock was in transition that I wasnt into.

2 arcade fire albums in a week is a bit much

Behind the obnoxious vocals is a clearly talented band, but the vocals man.... to me they just do not suit this kind of music and I find it borderline unbearably to listen too

Felt like it went on forever.

Background noise. Nothing memorable. One song lifts the riff from Lust for Life. "Neighborhood" slightly varies from the indecipherable songs. "Haiti" sounds like a different band in a good way bc female vocals mostly, but lots of ho hey garbage. This album is painful.

"Funeral" has some decent music, but I just can’t handle that voice that sounds like a sad puppy trying to sing. It really puts a damper on the whole experience for me.

A total fine, unexciting album. I’ve heard this one a few times before and it has never done anything for me. Probably a good example of a fan base so pretentious I can’t take the product seriously.

It's disappointing, this would've been a pretty solid album if the warbly obnoxious singing hadn't ruined the whole thing.

Bleh. I missed this band completely throughout their existence. Apart from today's blip, I hope that will continue to be the case for the rest of my existence.

I kind of like the sound and vibe of this album, but it does downshift into drudgery a few songs in and never really digs itself out again. Also those vocals are soooooo damn whiney, it's just hard to listen to. Every song kinda feels like it's building to something, but really it's just a build, and nothing ever feels resolved. With a better singer or better songs this could get another star.

The lyrics are by far the strongest part of this. The music often sounds like it's from a commercial for vaguely-specified B2B solutions

Arcade fire’s sound becomes redundant and winy after awhile. I can handle a few of their songs and “wake up” “rebellion” are the only 2 songs I like in this album.

Listened to this in the car driving to a wine tasting in Le Creusot. Lovely memories, the album but didn’t fit the vibe for the day (not the albums fault). A little somber, a little sad and I described this as ‘cry in the shower music’. Not my personal cup of tea but I understand it is a well made album and quite remarkable for a debut.

Started fine but tailed off. I feel like I can trace back a lot of music from the early 10s I dislike to this album.

This album epitomizes what I don't like about '00s rock music - sensitive, pretentious, earnest. I wish to smash their guitars against the Delta House walls. The production here is not my favorite. It's dense which is a fine quality, but this sounds muddy and busy for its own sake. The vocals of both singers are buried. Should we not hear them? If not, why not? Butler's singing style of scream/whine is grating after the 3rd song as well. Régine is good and I would like to hear more of her. In fact, why can't she be lead most of the time? This isn't bad. Definitely not my taste. This is music for college girls discovering their first indie band crush and the boys who love them.

Oh, dear. It’s 2025 and all this bloviating baroquery – songs that sounded so clear-minded and agenda-complemingly progressive 20 years ago; part of the soundtrack to, no need to whisper it, change – sounds sickly-pretentious to the point of hostile-facetious. Not strictly Arcade Fire’s fault – though lighting the path for the nightmare of stomp-clap-hey, a subgenre of indie so indulgently anodyne that it killed guitar music for the best part of a generation, sort of might have been – but all the same … “Funeral” now sounds like just that, only it’s millennial optimism we’re grieving. I didn’t like this record. It was almost so many things but not quite anything – “The Black Parade” without energy; Dexys Midnight Runners without charm (nothing here comes even close to DMR’s “This is What She’s Like”) … ultimately, a fitting soundtrack to our squandered opportunity for, whisper it now, change.

wheezy thin vocals, cramped mix, milquetoast instrumentation- dictionary definition indie-rock. a lot of people connect to it on a real emotional level- but it's not reaching me at all. there's a couple of songs near the end (after the excrable neighborhood suite) that sond like if a different band covered them would be decent- so it can have an extra star...

On the surface, this ticks all the right boxes - sadly, I just found it a bit dull to listen too. For all the quirky instrumentation and offbeat arrangements, this is just straightforward akt-rock cosplaying as something more sophisticated. And the singer's voice annoys on most of the tracks. Interesting in places, but this is not for me - not sure what all the hype is about.

Hey! Another previously-listened-to-er. Me and this album go way back to five months ago, when I first listened to it on a whim through the last.fm recommendations. I really didn't like it. Something about the irreverent backing vocals and epic atmosphere of the album rubbed me the wrong way and came off as insincere. I don't negotiate with arsonists of shopping districts or game centres (I don't know which they're referring to - both are equally hipster), though I guess I can give these guys another go if the Dimermeister were to put me under duress. That guy's scary. Uhhhhhh. Maybe this one should have returned to me a little later as it doesn't sound different from when I last heard it. That being said, I can see the merit this time around. I like the guitar outro on "Une Anee Sans Lumiere". "Crown of Love" is pretty alright - the songwriting on that track is competent. I enjoy the way that the vocals flow together and the strings are very nice. "Wake Up" is a pretty respectable tune, which is significant since I had that exact song in mind while I wrote my previous paragraph. The crunchy guitars also give the song a nice bit of punchiness, so I guess the "epic" atmosphere is warranted this time around. The fittingly massive outro is decent as well. Harps/music boxes works surprisingly well with the song and I enjoy the change in tempo. Solid track. Man, I hate writing these reviews while I'm listening to the albums - especially when I change my mind halfway through the process of writing. There are some good cuts on this album, though I think a lot of the good material is being held down by one fatal grievance - the vocals. They're entirely shitty. "Neighborhood #2" is the biggest offender of this - a song which caused me to completely shut my brain off in order to get through it. Other victims of Win Baker include "Neighborhood #3" and "Rebellion", though all of the songs (minus the closer) are tainted by his presence. In all fairness, most of my favourite albums come from artists who I initially perceive as being shit-voiced, though I don't care enough about the music on this album to let it polish itself with future relistens. This is very narrowly escaping a 1 star, if only due to the instrumentals being competent and inventive. I had an entire character arc over the previous paragraphs, though I feel like I'm back to square one with this band. I need drink. Interestingly, the two other Arcade Fire albums that were on this list have been expunged from future editions of the book. I listened to "Neon Bible" a month or so ago and can't remember a single thing about it, so maybe that's for the best. That being said, I can vouch for this album as an inductee. I do know that it's both popular and influential. It's also pretty unique and dynamic, so I guess I'm grateful for having heard this one before I cunked it.

Probably a big album for my millenial peers, but this was quite a boring listen for me.

Decent, not my thing. A little spineless to be honest, like it lacked some semblance of any grit or strength. The best we got was the final song (In the Backseat). There's been better by Arcade Fire that's for sure, but it might just be hard to measure up to the Elbow album which is also in the generated lists and the Arcade Fire song Afterlife. 2.5/5 stars

Neighboorhood #3 (Power Out) is a Tour de force! But I am still not a fan of the singer’s voice. I preferred The Suburbs over this record. I did not like the overall sound and the occasional yelling eg on Wake Up frustrated me. Haiti and In The Backseat annoyed me too. I don’t know what exactly it is that put me off.

Don't really have a lot to write, didn't really enjoy it.

Every song in this album compels you... To skip it. It starts OK but by song 3 it is painful, each song is 4 minutes too long, only Rebellion is fine in its entirety. I am giving it two stars because songs in isolation could be bearable and here and there there are some interesting sections (in Power Out, Kettle and wake up) but I would rather pay thousands in quarters playing a Mortal Kombat clone while on fire than listen to the whole album again.

Couple so so mid tempo indie rock songs….but otherwise pretty boring I’ve seen them live and the songs are better in person than on record across their discography But at the end of the day just another boring hipster band who spent too much time with other hipsters from Mile End in Montreal…..then other hipsters from other towns saw them, and now here we are….a world famous boring hipster band. I’m certain this review will infuriate baristas everywhere

This doesn't sound like 2004. I hate that there are albums on this list that are from the 2000s while still sounding like other records on this list that are way older. This is not bad but youbvould have chosen way more from the 21st century.

This was ~ok~. It's just a little Indie for my tastes. There was randomly a girl on the last song? I don't even know if she was in any of the previous songs. I would probably like this more if I gave a good look at the lyrics but since I work while I listen to all of these albums, they're sometimes probably not getting a fair chance.

Aside from Wake Up, which was used by U2 to introduce their live shows, i was completely unaware of Arcade Fire. This album definetly fits in the indie rock category along with acts like Foster the People and Friendly Fires. Some of the songs took on a droning noise parade feel like Haiti. Overall ok but not really my cup of tea.

Yet another fad I skipped in the turn of the naughts. Everytime I heard someone talk of Arcade Fire I had problem remembering which band it was, I know I've heard their music, quite a lot at one point, but nothing stuck. Sound like so many bands, I hear echoes of Brit rock bands like Suede and stadion pop such as U2 et. al. and none of this appeals to me. This album did nothing to me. Utterly forgettable. I mean, it didn't annoy the hell out of me, so I guess it deserves two stars?

I’d heard Wake Up and Rebellion (Lies) and had both songs in my music catalog. After listening to the full album, I still only like those two songs. Not much else on Funeral that I could get interested in or enthusiastic about. The word milquetoast comes to mind. It’s really about a 1.5 for me but I’ll say 2 out of the kindness of my heart. 2/5

Pretentious marmite.

I just don't like Arcade Fire. I think there was a thin slice of time in the early aughts when this kind of music was popular, but I really don't hear anything like it anymore. I really don't understand why we need not one, not two, but THREE Arcade Fire albums. There are MUCH better bands that have put out MUCH better albums, but I have to listen to three hours worth of this boring, milquetoast shit.

Thoroughly unimpressive. This album has been on so many "essentials" lists and I don't understand why. I would not choose to listen to it again.

It should been a red flag to me that both Pitchfork and Robert Christgau like this album. Generally I've noticed a personal trend that albums that Pitchfork or Robert Christgau enjoy, I more often than not do not enjoy. I am not a fan of this guy's voice or the vocal melodies they prefer. French Canadian Sausage Bjork is not for me. None of the songs made me really take notice. Sounds like pretty much every other filthy hipster indie rock band I've ever heard.Started to feel tedious pretty quickly. I wish songs progressed more rather than just vamping on the same hook with softer or louder dynamics through the whole track. Album cover just feels like an homage to the work of Terry Gilliam in Monty Python's Flying Circus. Which for an album named FUNERAL seems like either a disconnect or a joke that I am not getting.

You know sometimes you have an idea, you think about it for a few minutes and realise it's silly and/or borning. Don't go ahead with it... This is a bit harsh, but I'd had a long evening playing catch up and had already dealt with Coldplay and a country album and I wanted something to pep me up. This really didn't do it. Was it all just one song that slowly meanders along, possibly. Just felt bland, Funeral is an apt title.

I've never heard this album before, yet it felt like I've heard it a million times before. It's not bad or anything, it's just incredibly boring. It almost feels like an insult that this album can be found on a list with the likes of Pink Floyd and Aretha Franklin.

Pre-listening thoughts: ok so I thought I had heard of arcade fire but I guess not? Cause I scrolled thru their Spotify and could not find any songs I recognized. But why are there three arcade fire albums on this list??? Are they that remarkable?? Post/during listening thoughts: I am trying so hard to form an opinion on this to no avail. Hmm, vorige Arcade Fire album vond ik best decent, vooral door 1 geweldig nummer. Dat nummer ontbreekt nu helaas. Het is niet fantastisch, dit is een album dat ik MOET horen voor ik doodga? Toch een beetje een terugkerend thema, was het nodig dat er maar liefst 3 albums(tot nu toe) van hen op deze lijst staan? Not a huge indie rock enjoyer

I would be more interested in delving into what I'm missing about Arcade Fire if I hadn't already done that in 2011 when The Suburbs won the Grammy for Album of the Year. I couldn't figure out what the appeal was then and I can't now. I found them bland, similar to listening to Coldplay. It's wild to see how widely regarded their albums are among critics. I guess that's the stereotype of indie rock snobs being pretentious. I'll give Funeral credit for the indie rock sounds and tropes they spawned that have become ubiquitous in the decades since.

I tend to class this band in with others where I feel they have more enjoyment playing basic music than creating overly original music. Other bands such as the Polyphonic Spree, Vampire Weekend and Flaming Lips. The post modern US college scene with the odd decent song. I'm more familiar with their folow uop, Neon Bible, and they are ok but it doesn't really talk to me as anything special.

Meh. Sort of sounds like The Killers/Arctic Monkeys/Muse all combined - which is unfortunate as I don't like any of them, either.

wow I really didn't like this

I feel like I have enjoyed some various Arcade Fire songs in the past, but unfortunately not much here. Still a perfectly pleasant album and it was fine while it was on. But I don't plan on returning to much at all from here again.

I had a copy of Neon Bible that I tried listening to and hated, and gave up on Arcade Fire because of that. I didn’t mind the first few tracks on this album, but was really disappointed by Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out) because the intro was so powerful and then the rest of the song was just kinda… nothing. And then I couldn’t bring myself to listen to the rest. I got up to that part twice yesterday, and gave up each time. I’ll possibly get round to listening to the rest at some later point, but for now

Arcade Fire was lucky enough to ride the hype wave of an indie rock renaissance. The Pitchfork Era. The Ironic Hipster Era. The George W. Bush Era. It was a simpler time. Anyway, I don't think they're that good. The music is fine here but the lead vocals are terrible. I've heard The Suburbs and it's worse.

I don't get the appeal of this.

Genuinely uninteresting

Previously rated: The Suburbs (3/5) ********************* Not terrible music, but it's just so generic and forgettable. What do they have against guitar solos or drum fills? All I remember from listening to it yesterday was a whistling tea kettle and a song with strings. I didn't remember anything from the other album either. Arcade Fire makes music that is just there. It doesn't really do anything, and it doesn't do anything for me. Normally I'd give an album like this a 3 like I did The Suburbs, but that generic-ness just annoys me into dropping it a star.

This came out when I was twenty. It was overhyped then, it remains overhyped now. Just a bunch of maudlin, navel gazing, fluff. Nothing interesting musically. Lyrically equivalent of a suburban teenagers diary, which, I guess is the point, but it does nothing for me. Cliché after tired cliché.

Meaningless is the only word that comes to my mind when listening to this. I see what they were trying to do but they really didn't hit the spot. Seems like the band you really want to like but simply can't. Unfortunately it's absolutely not memorable. I almost had a hard time listening through the whole thing.

This is really not my cup of tea. The whole album sounds kind of pretentious, as if the band wanted to appear sophisticated, without really being so. And above all is the wailing voice of the singer, who always sounds like he's in sever pain. Personally, I don't really see, why this album was so well received when it first came out. It's neither something new, nor something special

Anthemic, again! This is the 3rd AF, I've had pop up. I'm still struggling with getting to like them. I'm sure they're great live.

I could not wait for this to be over, from about song 2. I hate to rate it so low because I think this is more personal preference than a comment on it's quality, but I found this super annoying.

Step 1 - listen to The Moon and Antarctica. Step 2 - ignore that you don't have Modest Mouse's sense of bizarre whimsy or ability to mold atonality. You just have a singer with a squeaky voice. Try to be like Modest Mouse anyway, Step 3 - ????? Step 4 - profit Arcade Fire has always seemed like the band you are supposed to admire. I try, I really do. But I'm not sold on the quietly restrained, driving eighth notes, supposedly building up to something that never quite gets there. And I have this sinking feeling that this and The Suburbs aren't the only albums of their waiting on the list to disappoint us . . .

Objectively a pretty decent album, I’ve just never really liked this style/phase of music and I hope it doesn’t ever regain popularity. For me it lives in that world of stomp clap Mumford and lumineers and it just doesn’t work for me. But it is a decently made album. The drums in track one feel distractingly terrible to me but they didn’t bother me on the rest of the record

I've tried to like this band and got some reason I just can't get into it. It's fine and enjoyable but just not ever memorable.

Meh. Was intrigued, but felt it underperformed.

It's got that early-mid 200s distorted vocal, pushing drums, and chugging lightly deistorted rhythm guitar.There are momentas that are really nice (the opening of Une Annee Sans Lumiere for example) but it's just not that interesting to me. The music is largely unispired and lacks anything particularly unique to peak my interest. This album just kind of happens, inconsequentially, trotting along without a care in the world to you or I. It's not bad, it's beige. Harmless, meh.

Basic "Indie" whininess. Melodies are decent. Vocals both male and female are awful. Overwrought and dripping with sentimentality.

Never been a fan of Arcade Fire. This didn't change that. But I may have accidentally listened twice? This felt like 2 hours, not 50 minutes. I don't think it sucks THAT bad. But it does suck.

There’s just something about this band that bores me. I SHOULD like them at least somewhat but……meh? And I don’t know why other than they just don’t deliver. Always building, never really delivering. Wake Up is ok and In The Backseat is kinda nice but the rest is just so forgettable that I already forgot it all.

This is the third arcade fire album in quite a short period of time and it just feels a little dated. I think it's an ok album but I think that is mostly because I was an indie teenager around when these albums were released. I still like Rebellion (lies) but the rest was meh. I think this might be the weakest one of the 3 albums.

I thought, hey great, I like Arcade Fire. Turns out no, I don't.

A relaxing listen, but not something that really grabbed my attention apart from Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out) but that track starts with some good strong instrumentation and it kept me hooked, that is until the next track came along. While not knowing their name I have heard their work before. Seems Arcade Fire did the movie score to the Joaquin Phoenix film “Her”, and with that being a film I quite enjoy then there is some stuff out there by Arcade Fire that I much prefer.

OK, now this is a strange one. The only thing I can say is I neither liked nor disliked this. There were good bits and not so bits. Part of me thinks well that means it should be a 3 then but the rest of me says if I were to do that then it would de-value all the others that I genuinely did like but only gave a 3. So there it is then 2.

Meh Indie "rock"

I assume this was innovative at time of release, but it no longer feels that way. The mix makes it hard to hear the lyrics at points so it’s hard to get a clear sense of the story. Vocals are quite weak at points. Having enjoyed other Arcade Fire records I was hoping for more with this one

I remember being enthralled by Rebellion (Lies) when it first came out. This album does not hold up at all for me. I listened to it a lot when it come out, but now it is a snooze fest. It is the body complicated background music ever written. Indie Muzac.

Good, but unmemorable album

This album is like a bad mixture of Coldplay and Franz Ferdinand.

This is far better than Neon Bible, because at the very least it isn't boring, at least not most of the time. There are some songs I would even dare say I enjoyed here. Nothing I'd add to my personal library, but it works as an album. What irks me the most here is the singer's voice, as its not only very whiney, despite none of the songs expelling specifically sadness, but also that it just sounds like Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse but less interesting and singing songs that lend themselves far less to the voice. It makes some songs that feel like great indie rock tunes conceptually turn into songs that sound like stomp and holler shit you'd hear out of the Lumineers or some other early 2010s indie folk band no one likes. Another issue I find is a lot of songs tend to pick up and start to do something interesting like a minute too late, and the song ends up ending before the payoff really does its job. I just feel like this is almost there, and who knows, maybe if I gave this a couple more tries I'd start to like it quite a bit, but for now, I can only claim that this is ten times better than the slog that is Neon Bible. Okay, this actually got REALLY boring with the last few tracks, so it's still a two, but it slipped down a bit from that. No matter what I do not get the praise here. While we're comparing them to Modest Mouse, how does this band have three on here and Modest Mouse has zero? So weird.

9/18/2023 Arcade Fire Funeral (2004) Never listened to this one at all. Never listened to Arcade Fire at all - reading the Wikipedia, it appears that this album is regarded as one of the greatest of all time. That’s a lot of hype to live up to! 1 Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) - lyrics are very hard to understand,the singing is kind of waily. Rhythm doesn’t seem to shake out until after the first verse. (3) 2 Neighborhood #2 (Laika) - singing modded with discordant echo. I wouldn’t say the lyrics make a lot of sense to me … in this one, the neighbors are dancing in the police disco lights, that’s not bad. In one of the later choruses, the female singer kind of shrieks like Yoko, that’s never something I enjoy. (3) 3 Une Annee Sans Lumiere - lyrics are mostly in French and from what I can tell sung in a very poor accent. You can probably tell that I am so far unimpressed with this album. Big mood change late, with fast strum guitars. I guess that was the “outro” (2) 4 Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) - the fast strum continues, a little better melody and singing this time. Ok, I take it back about the better singing. I kind of like the fast strum as a drone. Discordant string playing as a prelude to chorus, ugh. (3) 5 Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles) - a bit folkier start. Man, some of these lyrics are dramatic - “my eyes are covered by the hands of my unborn kids”. I really can’t gather any meaning from these lyrics, not that they have to have any, just not resonating with me much. I guess I like this one a little better than the others I have heard so far? The strings are really nice, but seems like synthesizer from my reading. I guess this band probably set the stage for bands like Bon Iver and Mumford and Sons. (3) 6 Crown Of Love - old timey piano, weak singing like he’s trapped under something. Droning piano part is ok, with strings over the top. Rhymed cancer and answer in a love song, not sure how to feel about that. Big change at the 3:45 mark, didn’t care for it. I am just not connecting to this record. (2) 7 Wake Up - a bit rockier than the previous tracks, then with choral vocals (3 in unison)? Some better lyrics here too, but they kind of scream them and ruin it. “Our bodies get bigger but our hearts get torn up”. (3) 8 Haiti - much stronger lyrics here, partly in French. Feeling bad about what I said earlier about accents, because they apparently are French. I’ll just go with “they’re not great at singing.” The music is just a drone march, though. (3) Ending leads into next track which is supposed to be the best on the album. 9 Rebellion (Lies) - definitely their most straightforward composition on the album, still pretty drony, and not great singing. (3) 10 The Backseat - female vocals, again, sound like she might be trapped under something part of the time. Something about her singing style really irritates me. (3)

This wasn’t my cup of tea. The instruments were fine, but the singers voice just annoyed me. It wasn’t horrible, just really boring. I’m starting to wonder if I really need to hear all these albums before I die.

This resembles so many other early 2000s "indie rock" albums that I am amazed I ever found interesting.

There's just too much indie rock that are the same-ish on the 1001 list. This one mixed things up a little bit through the tracks but I still needed to pause the album halfway through and listen to something else as a palate cleanser before continuing.

A few good listens, but not my cup of tea

I’ll start with the positive. This is a a very well arranged, orchestrated and produced album. Unfortunately it feels like Win Butler wants to be David Byrne but he does have the funk and soul to make it work.

AJ: This band has a song or two I really love. Just a couple of really great songs. Wake Up hits me in the feels. I don’t know why it affects me so much. Just does. Couple cool tracks here, but they’re pretty strange. Honorable mention to Keep the Car Running. Not on this album but it’s the other song of theirs I love. Random stuff on Spotify after the album ended has been top notch! •The Strokes- Soma •Skipped vampire weekend •The Shins- New Slang skipped, but went back and listened and it’s cool. Weird voice, melancholy lyrics, I liked the dancier tracks (Power Out, Rebellion) and I liked Wake Up.

Trying to be super arty-rock. But ultimately failing. Critically acclaimed but for the life of me, I don't know why. Let's list the art-rock tropes used on this album: 1. Weird album title that has nothing to do with the songs on the album. Long mysterious sounding titles with numbers and parenthesis: Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels), etc. (By the way, the 4 "Neighborhood" songs appear to have no connection with each other) 2. Foreign language titles (also mysterious): Une Annee Sans Lumiere 3. Unintelligible lyrics on several songs 4. Repetitive chanting 5. Added violin and accordion for artsy ambience 6. Constant driving quarter note bass drum on seemingly every single song, except when they throw in a sudden weird tempo change (usually accompanied by a key change or new chords). Very artistic. Here's a tip . Try writing a catchy melody. I tried to like these guys when this came out - but I just can't do it. I don't get it. Someone tell me what I am missing. 2 stars for effort.
