Intelligent hip hop

Feel good rap in a refreshing way. Cool beats and great vocals. Favourites: What’s Golden, A Day At The Races, High Fidelity and Sum Of Us

I remember first hearing “A Day at the Races” on Tony Hawks Underground back in 2003, and decided to buy this record a bit later on, and after a full relisten I’m surprised with how well it still holds up. Musically, the production is fantastic. Record is full of dusty funk loops, jazz breaks, flutes, upright basslines, and crisp boom-bap drums without sounding dated. Solid 4/5

had a profound effect on me in the 7th grade

Really good stuff. Comparison is the thief of joy and all that, but comparing this to the Marshall Mathers LP is just night and day. Where Eminem seemed to just be shouting slurs, this is musically excellent, with interest in every song. Completely unfamiliar group to me, but definitely one I'd return to.

Only knew concrete schoolyard by them previously which is a tune. Did not disappoint, fun listen

I have always enjoyed the Jurassic 5 that I’ve listened to, but never played a full album before. I would say I found 85% of this a decent listen…the end tailed off in my opinion and thus the album would have been better off without it.

A keeper. Liked a lot.

This was really really good. The beats are awesome and some of those samples were just perfect. Good lyricism and flow, albeit a little “of it’s time”.

Classic hip hop

Best Song: A Day at the Races This is a good album. The only Jurassic I knew prior to today was Jurassic Park. The only 5 I knew were the Jacksons. I don't think that would make a great super group but, in all honesty, I'd check them out. This has some strong tracks and has more of a positive vibe than other hip hop artists in the early 2000s. 4/5.

65 million years in the making.

Good album by a hip hop band I had never heard of.

Lowkey synchronized.

as an earlier example of backpack rap, Power In Numbers is starkly different and past-facing compared to most hip hop coming out in '02. they got Big Daddy Kane and Kool Keith on here. this stylistic conservatism carved out a little slice of acclaim for them, like a lot of more traditionalist hip hop does in times of flux for the genre. but of course, as an album it's still pretty good. follows the guidelines a bit strictly, but is well-crafted. best moments are the more unconventional ones, like the beat on What's Golden. deserves to be one of the 1001? likely so, but not definitively. there are other albums that can fit the same niche

Think I missed this one… damn, the twin towers were standing at the time… oh but it was released in 2002? Daaaaamn. This was very interesting. I don’t think I ever heard it. I enjoyed it. I thought it could be tighter for sure. And that 2002 release date still boggles me. It was actually very chill for the times. Boolean rating: yes, glad to have heard it.

i genuinely enjoyed this album so much. head swinging hips swaying levels of enjoyment. i liked the beats as well as melody and i feel like the deepness and the smoothness of their voices compliment each other so so well.

I can't say I had low expectations for this—I actually had NO expectations for this. I'd never heard of this group, or this album, and the wikipedia article about it did little to convince me this would be required listening. But boy, am I glad it was on this list! This was great! The delivery from each member of the group was distinctive and phenomenal. Kind of reminds me of A Tribe Called Quest or De La Soul, but with slightly more contemporary cadences. Excellent beats, creative wordplay. It doesn't really fit the zeitgeist of 2002, and I think that's kind of what makes it so special. This is the kind of stuff I do this list for!

Awesome hip hop. Chali 2nas flow is the smoothest flow theoretically possible. But I can't say I have some specific songs that stuck with me.

Timeless album, would be critically acclaimed and commercially successful if released in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 10s, or 20s. Enduring legacy that is still popularly used today. All that being said, the second half of the album drops off significantly, before petering out.

it was eh

What's Golden, banger.

"Power in Numbers" breaks the 3-day streak of mediocrity. I like "DDT" since it's freestyle, rather than an unfunny skit. The tracks only get better following "DDT". My favourite songs on "Power in Numbers" are "One of Them" and "Thin Line". I hope to get another great album today. 4 stars for "Power in Numbers".

Like the Vibe

Saved? ✅ Would listen again? ✅ Would recommend to anyone? ✅ Would buy on Vinyl? ✅

lowk peak ash, you can see how influential it was a good mix of like fun songs to listen too and interesting skits or experimental stuff or wtv

First time listener, big time fan? The beats were fresh, the bars had their moments, and the boom bap kept me engaged. The only band that I would liken the unique beats to, which included a few flute-driven songs, was the beastie boys. Will have to give another listen but it should reaffirm this as a 4.5 rounded ... down

Very enjoyable alt/hip-hop album

It's pretty good. Never listened to these guys before. I'm about a 3.5 with this but will go 4 for some great bass lines. Favorites: Freedom, Day at the Races, What's Golden, Sum of Us.

No. 171 Cool rhythms here, from the beats to the flows! This album is paced really well.

This era of hip-hop is so good... and so is this record. Not fully my thing, but I enjoyed the hell out of it.

i do enjoy the chill out low key brand of hip hop here 3.5/5

Great album. Really like this. Need to add to rotation

This was a great rap album. I thought it was dinosaur themed at first glance.

Big fan of the beats here and some of the posse cuts give me Tribe vibes. Some of it reminds me of Digital Underground but not in a terrible way (as Sex Packets is one of the worst albums I've heard from this challenge). Pretty fun!

What a suprise, not my usual genre but what a great record

Funky, groovy

I really enjoyed this great hip hop album. Not a 5 but still really good. 3.9/5

love me a good oldschool hip hop album especially if you add a little bit of jazz😍

3.75/5 The hip hop beats and rapping over the jazz/funk fusion is pretty good. Lyrics are grounded in the politics of the real world.

I liked this one a lot. Beats are energetic. “Break” stood out for me.

I personally like Quality Control a little better but damn is Jurassic 5 fun.

wel paar goeie nummers

Possibly Revolutionary

Wow, a good off-brand hip hop album from these editors, who would have thought 😂

Great album, little simple and clearly oldschool but good

This shit is delicious. The beats are simple, but soulful and hit. The variety of voices from the four rappers offers a nice variety. Often in rap groups there are one or two really good voices, while the rest are okay. Not here, they support eachother really well and their parts flow into each other extremely well as if they are actually four heads of the same multiheaded dinosaur. The record is a tad long, but the songs are pretty varied, so that isn't a big negative. The only song I disliked was One Of Them. A more traditional 90's rap track with a darker track and tone. I don't think this fits their style and the casual homophobia is really unneccesary. The following "Hey" which is as soft as a summer breeze makes the dark sounds of One Of Them only more jarring. The track isn't bad enough to sour the entire record, however it is sad how close this record came to true greatness only to fumble at the last second. Another record that I probably would never have found without this list. A great addition. 8.5/10

This was a nice surprise. Really enjoyed this.

Haven’t heard of these guys before but man this is a cool one It takes a lot of what I like about older rap (more instrumentation, got a bit more of a melody) and combines it with a lot of stuff I like about Wu-Tang (skits/spoken word sessions, stronger vocals). It’s obviously more hip hop than anything else but there’s a lot of really strong jazz influences. Vocals are great, and even though the lyrics aren’t particularly special, they’re still solid. Beats are really strong and keep you invested even on some of the longer tracks There’s a couple of songs that just kinda get a bit repetitive but other than that I don’t have many complaints. I guess there’s some songs that are a little too innovative and weird but nothing super unpleasant Not quite good enough for a 5 star, but this is a really great album. Starting to realize I really like this genre

Really fun; I don't like rap as much as other due to the repetitiveness of the music, as well as how it can often be a simple beat without much to offer. This was the first time I really vibed with the music. I liked the samples, the loops, the lyrics, the variety. They were catchy songs, man.

If You Only Knew how great this album is

Very good rap for the paying masses. Probably needs a few more listens. Fun.

highly listenable, very 90s

This some gangsta shi

A surprisingly enjoyable album. It's more than just rapping with a beat behind it: they used interesting melodies and clever rhymes. Four stars.

Great record. Amazing production. Favourite Track(s): Freedom, If You Only Knew, I Am Somebody, What's Golden Least Favourite Track(s): Sum Of Us

1. Acetate Prophets 2. I Am Somebody 3. Sum of Us

Excellent album introduced to me through tony hawk

Number 4

Never heard of them, and had no idea what I was going to be listening to. This older white lady really enjoyed it!

Jurassic 5 feel like the modern embodiment of De La Soul. Their overall vibe in particular. They both share that idea that hip-hop could be playful, collaborative, musically rich, and a bit of craic, rather than aggressive. The samples are fantastic, the beats are huge, and there are snippets of spoken word, random sound effects and a cacophony of noises to keep things interesting. There’s a huge amount of variety here too: funk, soul, jazz flute, and I even hear “Les Fleurs” in there too. They mess with form and structure too. One song is just sample mixing with no rapping, another is an acapella rap without any of Jurassic 5 performing at all. And they did something really interesting by starting off the album with the same closing double-bass line from their last album, making it feel like a continuation. “What’s Golden” is the best track on the album, where DJ Cut Chemist blended Public Enemy and 70s rock samples into something that is absolutely class. Overall, “Power in Numbers” feels like a throwback to late 80s hip-hop, bringing that old-school fun vibe back to hip hop.

gut, vibes

Ziek, nog geweten van deze groep

Criminally underrated hip hop group. This is probably their best album top to bottom, but I don't think that they ever put together what I would consider a complete great album. They do have plenty of great songs, and many on this one.

120. liked it 3.5

Vraiment pas mal ! J’ai bien aimé

Behageligt.

classic vibe

Notables: - What's Golden - Thin Line

Great flow great beats great album

I like this one, I just don't have much to say except that I thought including the kid in 'After School Special' was cute. Favourites: If You Only Knew, Break.

Best album so far, hip hop jazz fusion with classic flow and great beats, big sense of community, all around great album, album is long but none of the songs are bad.

very good production on this album, a couple of the hooks on some tracks are very catchy and will definitely being listen thru this again. very well done album!

Gute Stimmen, gute Rhymes. Das geht gut runter

I did like this one, its the type of hip-hop I can get into, although a bit less interesting than other groups I really like. The one guy with the low voice was off-putting though.

Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? Unfamiliar How do I feel about this artist? I don’t really know anything about them Favorite song(s)? Thin Line, Day at the Races, High Fidelity Overall Thoughts: I didn’t know what to expect from this but I really liked it. Unlike some other rap albums I’ve heard, this one didn’t seem too repetitive. Each track sounded fresh to me. Overall, I enjoyed it more than I expected to.

Pretty cool; beats are great and the lyrics and variety of vocals are both really nice.

I thought that this was going to be some rock album. I was extremely pleasantly surprised

Delicioso

Killer record, production is great, amazing rapping from all

this album is highkey amazing

oh yes, this is great. introduced the kids to J5 and now they sing along and request songs

I don't know if I'd even call them skits, but it's a nice change that the little interludes feel so at home, actually pulling you into the music instead of distracting from it.

This has a great vibe to it and seems really tight. I had heard of Jurassic 5 but never listened. Pretty solid.

Great energy, great flow. Not every track is amazing or holds up, but What’s Golden is a really good track. I enjoy this and I'm giving it a 4 for that, but I'm not even completely sold that this needs to be on the list. I guess it carries on a tradition, but I'm not sure how influential it was.

im not really into rap, but i like this album

Man I love this group. They opened the door to hip-hop for me, bridged a gap from punk and metal into a new world. This isn't their best album, but it is the only one on the list, so that'll help this score. Ensemble vocalists in hip-hop work so well, the combinations of tone, tambour, flow, lyrics keeps the whole thing engaging and fresh while giving a strong sense of the cyphers battling in the park. Pure energy. This album starts so strong, but dips a little towards the end.

Hip hop is not my typical go-to for music, in fact i don't stray too far from the Beasties or MF Doom, but this album is a keeper. I will be listening to this again and digging into it. Love the production and themes. Sum of Us is a killer song. I guess it qualifies as old school now and I dig it.

Loved it!

I actually really liked this ! The last song especially I know it’s way different from the rest of the album but I loved it

Yes yall

Smart, tight and all 90s rap! Reminds me a lot of A Tribe Called Quest. I would definetly listen to this again. Also the amount of sampling is on a beastie boys level. 8/10 Favorite song A day at the races

Very solid album. Holds up well. Very listenable. Some great MCs

Honestly I was pleasantly surprised by this! It was a ton of fun, and had some great features all throughout. The album flow was fantastic as well. "Acetate Prohpets" was kind of a weak closer imo but that's really the only complaint I have. "A Day At The Races" is phenomenal.

Superb. Proper hip hop

I got into this quite a bit. I really dug the grooves and flow to this album. 4/5

Super strong album. Enjoyed almost every track, and the skits weren't too long to be annoying. Super enjoyed the variety of voices in the group, I can't say I've heard too many rappers with THAT deep of a voice before.

I really must stop listening to an album and then reviewing the next day. Anyhew, this is freking great hip hop. Good energy, good vibes, good flow, good samples.

A couple of years into the new millennium, I was working in a school in East London where the big name in hip-hop were So Solid Crew. I wish I'd heard of Jurassic 5 because, to my untrained hip-hop ear, this flows so much better and just feels cooler. A lot of the backing tracks are hypnotic and edgy and the work of the DJs gives the album an unexpected cohesion. Highlights include A Day At The Races, Sum Of Us and the brilliant I Am Somebody and there are other songs deserving to be added to my Liked Tracks. I feel my street cred would have gone up if I'd diverted my class onto Jurassic 5 and this gets a low 4☆ from me. Doubt you'll find So Solid on the 1001!

really good love the message and all the songs a very nice

I always liked their debut LP and Quality Control better but this is good. 2na has a voice that is instantly recognizable. I could do without cut chemist interspersing every song with a bunch of old television and movie dialog. It's Golden is their biggest hit, it's a good song. It's weird that Nelly Furtado was such a big thing at the turn of the century. One of Them is a jam.

Top-shelf hip hop with tasteful music underneath. 4.2

love it

Old school rap are just PEAK

Didn’t pay CRAZY attention to the lyrics so they might be VERY 2002 but as far as everything else at least it’s like riiiight up my street

a good listen.

Damn! Rap/hip hop never really hit for me. But immediately I dug the production on this... a lot! Just flashed some tracks again. Production is sublime... I've always been more drawn to the instrumental side of music more than the lyrical. But I have to say, from a pure craftsmanship perspective, the lyrics on this are really, really well put together. Also, "What's Golden" was one of those songs you've heard ages ago and since almost completely forgotten about. Then when you hear it you have no clue when or where you know it from... It's a very special experience - another bonus of doing this list. Such a pleasant surprise, definitely something I have to go back and listen to again sometime.

Solid Album

Really liked Freedom, Break, A Day At The Races, and I Am Somebody. Break was the one I fucked with the most but I think A Day At The Races is my overall favourite. I think this is Alternative Hip hop? I need to familiarize myself with more music genres and sub-genres.

Foundational.

Hip Hop raiz

I wasn't familiar with Jurassic 5 until today, though I did know Chali 2na from a record he did with Savoy back in 2015 that I quite enjoyed ("Love Is Killing Me") – I've actually got a poster of the Monstercat compilation that the track was featured on hung up like seven feet from where I'm currently sitting. Needless to say, I was interested to hear what Chali would sound like in proper context on this album! First of all, I'll just say that Power in Numbers was a solid listen – one of the better hip-hop albums I've heard during this challenge. The beats are bangin', the rhymes & flows sound totally locked in and the way the tracks are weaved together is exceptional. Perhaps best of all, the one rapper I actually recognized going into the album stole the show at pretty much every given opportunity! If there's one thing holding this one back, it's that it's got too much of a good thing. Power in Numbers never gets truly bad, but after the halfway point, it just feels like the album is spinning its wheels and never quite catches the incredible stride it had in the first half. It's definitely one of those albums that would have benefitted from someone taking a hatchet to around 15-20 minutes of material before shipping it, in my opinion. I was a bit conflicted about giving Power in Numbers three or four stars since it falls pretty much right between Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... and The Score for me, but I reckon a light four is warranted here – it's not perfect, but I had a positive experience with it and would definitely listen to the entire thing again (assuming I'm in the right mood for it and not pressed for time)! Highlights: Freedom, Break, A Day at the Races, Remember His Name, What's Golden, Thin Line, Sum of Us, One of Them, Acetate Prophets

I know I probably shouldn't like the "lyrical spiritual miracle" flow here but their voices are actually quite unique- especially Chali 2na, who sounds like if Keith David could rap. The hooks here tend to be pretty catchy, too. Solid skateboard-core rap. I was pretty impressed and would re-listen.

SO GOOD

J5 and the roots were my introduction to hip hop. This album brought back a lot of memories, such a classic album.

Catchy hip-hop with some real funky and danceable backing music. A pleasant surprise.

Yeah this is great, liked all the beats and the rapping is strong throughout.

8/14, 57%

My kind of rap. Not overly aggressive, good flow and punchy funk. Enjoyed. I am Somebody and What's Golden my picks

Necesitaba un album así, sin tanto rock

Very good, they are solid performers individually but together they are great

Good solid jazz rap, very few misses here

Pretty good had some good highlights but some songs were a little boring

This was a really fun listen! It feels like if Wu-Tang were in LA and also had more electronic instruments. I loved the variety of styles that are played around with in rapping here and... I actually enjoyed the skits lol

Love this. Great discovery.

New to me and loved it. Dude with the low voice 🔥

Yes please.

Favorite Tracks: Freedom / Break / A Day at the Races / What's Golden / High Fidelity / Sum of Us Rating: 3.9 One of my favorite early 00's groups. The MCs are fire -- how can you not love Chali 2Na and that epic voice, he really steps it up on this album. The hella dope breakbeat, jazz-flute, uptempo beats from Cut Chemist bring the vibes. There's definitely an old-skool feel to this, and J5 leans into it with appearances from Pearcy P, Big Daddy Kane, and Kool Keith. "Quality Control" is usually the go-to J5 album for me, but this is a polished effort with great track flow.

Really liked the flow and beats on this album. After School Special stood out for me. 4/5

Once again, I am ignorant and am only now getting to hear some music I never gave a thought to...before listening for this project. The first half of this album is superb, but around sum of us, I found it less interesting (One of Them was stellar, though). That being said, 4 stars overall. I missed a lot of good music because I was a prig. My bad....

I feel like this hip-hop group was never talked about as much as A Tribe Called Quest or Wu-Tang Clan, but a lot of their songs have just as good beats.

Hey pretty nice, one of those guys does have a really deep voice that made me eh ? But yeah that was a little bit repetitive i feel but still refreshing in comparison to other albums

∑ Of Us are vibing

I saw Jurassic 5 over a decade ago at a music festival and I often think of how dang good they were live. It translates pretty well to this studio album. What’s Golden is an absolute banger, and the flute on If You Only Knew is fantastic. Overall a great listen

This one I really liked. I like the beats, the flow and the musicality/melodic playing. Especially liked “I am Sombody” and “Acetate Prophets”.

Very good!

Heard of them but never listened to them. Enjoyed it and added to my playlist.

It’s a cute album, I enjoyed it a lot as a youngster

Very good album Obvious example of 2000s hip hop One of those albums where after 7-8 listens it sounds best 7.7/10 Mix of NWA (less political) and MF DOOM kinda vibes Beats are exceptional I will come back to this album multiple times

Pleasantly surprised. Really good album, in the vein of Tribe.

It's albums like this that make me remember why I love hip hop to begin with. It's just great beats, entertaining raps and a lot of fun. The sound is very classy, vintage 90s boom bap done very well. The sample selection is very good, the instrumentals are just constantly fun and banging. It's just a very good time.

Really cool album, excellent hip hop. 5/5

No individual part of this album will blow you away. The beats are fresh and slightly jazzy, but they can be a bit simple and rarely wow you. Outside of Chali 2na, with his deep and effortless flow, none of the rappers stand out much. Despite all that, the album's atmosphere and message carry it to greatness. The constant mic passing gives this a real communal feel. Rarely does a rapper stay on for what feels like a full verse, which makes it feel like the album is always moving forward. The exceptions are a few guest verses, including a great one from Big Daddy Kane. There are creative songs concepts like "Thin Line" and positive messages like "I Am Somebody." The conscious topics aren't always unique, but they're rarely preachy. While short on can't-miss songs, the beats and vibes make this feel shorter than its hour runtime.

oooh ok i can get down with this. ngl i thought it was gonna be like indie rock. much better. this is--nice bass freedom--damn. if only you knew--lot of british sampling lol break--oooooh this is a groove remember his name--ok i'm legit loving this. the vocal variety is great. the beat is strong. the instrumentals have a great dialogue going with the rapping. i dunno how experimental this is in hiphop, but compared to my normal listening this is out there, and i am. loving. it. what's golden thin line--the friendzone, that perennial subject of song and verse after school special--haha love the intro. oh nice he's in the song feels like there's a good bit of social commentary going on here (no shit sherlock) but i'd have to listen a few more times to get a good handle on it. definitely freedom is about, well, lack thereof. ddt & the songs there are prob about toxicity in the LA hiphop world? acetate prophets--loving this one. i want to know more about the african sampling. vocals are getting more esoteric compared to the rest of the album. i don't think i can give less than 4.5 to an album that engaging. 5/5

Fav song-what’s golden

I enjoyed this more than many other hiphop albums here, much smoother and flow-focused than gangster rap sounding hard/tough. I listened through a few times while working and didn’t mind when it looped around. 3.5/5

Pop/punk classic

Finally, a good hip hop album.

Banger, until the hi-hats from a song three quarters or so down the album made me nauseous.

Pretty bangin vibes. 4 stars

Really interesting album. The first few tracks weren’t quite for me but enjoyed the instrumentation (flute especially). By the second half was properly enjoying it. Really strong beats definitely helped. Overall a solid album even for someone not rap inclined. Favourite track- Thin Line

Listened to this album dozens of times in college. Very good but may have aged a little weakly given some of the critiques in "One of Them" also the conscious vs party rap feels a little in tension. Still a worthy addition

A great rap album that manages to sound classic and modern at the same time. Socially conscious lyrics that don't sound preachy. Great beat.

Okay, I’m excited for this. Good reviews, been meaning to listen to them and fairly modern (for the list!). Let’s GO…. It’s a sweet groove. Nice beats, samples and vocals. Not blown away, but very pleasantly grooving. It’s nice. Kinda hard to comment on some specifics about it because there is a similar flow throughout, reminds me a bit of blackilicious. 3.5-4

I really enjoyed this. It was mellow with a few stand out songs.

Will keep listening to this. Perfect vibes and nice flows.

The reason I like Jurassic 5. Good melodies and cool rapping rhythms, you can't not bop your head along. I enjoy the call and response style - a lot less dated than other old school hip-hop. Thin Line is a banger

Solid classic rap album similar to A Tribe Called Quest

A really fun rap record. Loved many of the tracks.

I'll admit, I haven't listened to a lot of hip-hop even though I like it when I hear it - and I really enjoyed this album. Great rhythm, great lyrics, lots of great underlying music and diversity to keep me interested. This is why I'm loving this project - it's exposing me to albums and artists that I wish I'd listened to earlier! - Heard before? No. - Will I listen again? Very likely. - Does it inspire me to listen to more of this artist? Definitely. The autoplay followed this album with a group called Lyrics Born that I'm also enjoying!

Impeccable beats, production, and rhymes. Fun grooves on the backing tracks, some jazzy, some funky, but all good enough to nod your head with. Decent samples. Smart rhymes with tight delivery. If you like Tribe Called Quest, this is similar.

Love the old school flow.

the vibe of the time classic vibe

Solid 90s adjacent hip hop- East Coast jazz with West Coast harmonies. Solid 1-2 with Quality Control

This one snuck up on me and I loved it! It was a really fun and unique take on hip hop that is the precursor to some amazing 20-teen hip hop fusion that I personally adore!

2000s hip hop. Very cool beats. Jazzy and latin elements.

Pretty nice album for its genre, al of the songs are nice to listen to but I would skip a few if they popped up

Before Listening: I have never heard of this group and not sure what to expect, but I’m excited to hear something new! After Listening: I enjoyed this so much. I love rap/Hip-Hop and this was fantastic! I appreciated the social commentary and it’s so wild that these issues have not gotten any better. Really enjoyed this one.

Very good, a bit long.

This is fun and easy to listen to with great production. I like the touches with all the different audio samples. I think I’ll definitely revisit this.

Liked this one a lot! Fav: Freedom What's Golden *A Days At The Races and Break I remember liking a lot toooo

Great mixing. Covers many styles and samples.

Good album, gives me reminders of the 90's era of hiphop

I think power of numbes was an interesting composition. I had never heard of Jurassic 5, and I have to admit that even it is not the genrer I use to listen on my daily routine, it was amazing to listen such a diverse piece of music. It is nice how they connect memory and present, telling us how they music is a communication of a chain full of generations that had their own history, but at the end they communicate us that that past as well is part of them. In fact, one of the song that better communicate this, I think was freedom, because the sample used at the begginig and the hole backgrounf music, joined with the poweful message in the voices, was an entire combination that composed a clear concrete message. At the end music is what really weave our past in such an authentic way.

It was catchy! Not sure if I would chose it myself, but I enjoyed the songs.

I really enjoyed this, like the playlist that it lead to as well. will defo listen again

optimimal as hell. Went through all of the stages with this one. Started off wondering why this was on the list, into thinking "okay its got some good lyrics," all the way to this is spiritual. Some of the tracks really stick with me.

Nice. 4.2

A lot of fun!! Kinda hated the last track though, unfortunate that it had to end on a sour note

Outro is so good, instrumental might be the best track on the album

Interesting and fun hip hop that I've never heard before.

i totally judged a book by its cover (the art on this sucks), this was much better than expected

8.5 / 10

So groovy, great instrumentation. Really like the rhythms and melody within the rap. Really enjpyed, considering i don't really listen to much rap and find stuff without melodies difficult. Will definitely listen again! One song v homophobic - less good... Also a bit long - wouldve been better if 8-9 tracks.

If you only knew - soul music something we can all relate to.

no notes - i love bluesy bobby

What a great album, I'm surprised I've never heard of this before. Great listen.

This is a delicious album! I'm not sure I would have found this album on my own, and it's a great discovery. Really rich sounds, great beats. Fun, chill vibes. Love the variety of instruments, sounds, and textures. Was going to give it 5 stars until I saw someone else mention the homophobia in 'One of Them'. Went back and listened again more closely and... yeah, no thanks. Otherwise a solid album, though.

Not my fave J5 but definitely some new old heaters in this one I hadn’t paid attention to.

Was trying to justify why this was a 3 and failed. This is pretty fun/good.

SOUNDS HELLA COOL

Album is well produced and sounds great but nothing groundbreaking. Thin Line, What's Golden and I am somebody are my picks.

This was good and I'd probably listen to more of their music.

This is probably my favorite type of hip hop. I like the understated beats and the vocals were crisp

Not a fan of hiphop but the vibes are immaculate. Very powerful messages hidden in the lyrics of the raps. Love love love the beats. Surprised this album isn't as popular as it should be.

Chunky and full of muscle. Heavy with the beat and the rhyme, flowing quite natural with the def cold rhythm. Hiphoppin in a family way, writing lyrics on your mama’s behind, stumpin with the flavor I have no idea. Fuckin great album yes

I'm a big fan of hip-hop that gets branded "conscious", and this is a good but not absolutely amazing example. I had a good time the whole way through though.

I loved that they used so many different sound mediums!

So fucking chill

I first heard "A Day at the Races" on Tony Hawk's Underground. The fast rapping and fun music samples were unforgettable. On Power In Numbers: The samples and musical choices are phenomenal. The rap flow and the personalities of the MC's really stand out (especially Chali 2na), but, lyrically, this album ranges from excellent to kinda cheesy after school program rap. Jurassic 5's messages are positive, which is sorely missing in hip-hop, but it also leads to some of J5's cornier moments. Stylistically they bridge the gap between the 80's and 2000's. A very fun and technically proficient hip-hop crew and a good album. I loved the flute on "If You Only Knew". "A Day at the Races" still rules.

Enjoyed it quite a bit, real flashback to hanging out at Mike Munroe’s house with Peter, listening to J5. Would definitely listen more. Great tunes, great balance & variety.

bellissimo, l’ho ascoltato mentre cucinavo e mi sentivo uno chef di the bear. bellissime le transition tra una canzone e l’altra tracce preferite: a day at the races e ddt

Didn't know this, really liked it

I liked this one - but I forgot to pay attention to which track was what. I think it may have been because they flowed into each other in the way they did and the lack of defined song structures like traditional verse-chorus-verse that I didn't pick up on song names. Standouts - 4/5

Happy hiphop for the win!

The ultimate gateway hip hop group for basic British white indie kids (myself very much included).

Slick lyrics, clever samples, great stuff from J5.

A four for Jurassic 5. Fabulous beats and great flows.

It was ok, I wouldn’t be rushing back to it

Very solid. Melodic hip hop with smart bars …

Ughhh....this is difficult. Being on this list really does the album a disservice. If I heard this for the first time on it's own merits, I'm guessing I'd appreciate it way more. EDIT: I'm going to bump the rating up from a 3 because I have been listening to it and enjoying it more.

I only knew Concrete Schoolyard by these guys, which I was surprised wasn't their most streamed song online. This record was great, jazzy, laid-back and thoughtful wordplay.

The only Jurassic (park) where the bars actually worked. (GET IT GET IT!!!) Great albumcover, great opener on their spotify description: "Though there's actually six of them, Jurassic 5 got everything else right on their self-titled debut EP." and some solid 2000's Hip Hop. Some really solid bass lines on this album with songs like "Freedom" and "Break" getting carried by the bass. Overall great vocals and lyrics, it really feels like the inbetween era of 90's rap and 00's rap, with a lot of flows giving me NAS & Wu Tang vibes but with 00's instrumentals. "A Day At The Races" relax man, what a perfect high tempo Hip Hop song, the vocals on this with some switches to even faster tempo's, really got me wondering how I didn't know about these guys. Some really great features on here like Nelly Furtado with the most catchy song on the album "Thin Line". Overall a fun listen! 8.5/10.

Makes me want to dust off my old Tony Hawk'a Underground disc and fire up the GameCube. Good times.

Jurassic Five were part of the whole alternative hip hop thing that was really big in the late nineties - stuff like The Roots, Mos Def, Common, basically everybody who was on Dave Chapelle’s block party. Not really sure why it was labeled alternative but it was generally pretty great. Anyway this album is a great example of that point in time. A bunch of great rappers with cool flow and delivery, interesting and imaginative musical production, good times throughout. There are better examples of this genre/scene (Blackstar, Things Fall Apart, Let’s Get Free) so let’s say it’s just four stars.

Another hip hop classic

This was pretty entertaining.

I am a rock fan, through and through. But this was an absolute delight to listen to through and through. The kind of album I’d happily have on at home while I’m just relaxing.

I really enjoyed this album. Have I said that about a rap album before? Something about the tag-team rapping really works here, and the energy is forward-moving and positive. Other than "One of Them", this is a great album.

Had forgotten how chill this hip-hop gem is. Great morning listen!

I recognized a bunch of these voices from Linkin Park’s reanimation. A really enjoyable, poetic MC album.

2002. Enjoyable album with some great throwbacks in its style. Conscious Rap music with great flow

7.6/10

Always enjoy listening to Chali 2na's voice

Oh man, I haven't heard these guys in a minute! But they are awesome! And great album!

Power in Numbers não tenta reeinventar a roda do hip-hop. Faixa favorita: Hey

I don’t know hip hop well but this spoke to me. Bass hits right right and the rap punctuates well. Love these dude’s low voices too. “What’s Golden” seems very familiar to me. I do remember an older burnout in high school who loved these guys. Maybe that’s why it’s so familiar.

I remember around the time this came out listening to it and not really being into it. Its grown on me over the years, But I can't quite put my finger on what it is that loses its appeal for me. I can hear its influence on other songs I know and there will be times that it catches me and I have to rewind/replay. But something about Jurassic 5 has always been like eh whatever for me. That said, it is a very good album.

Loved it! Especially like that all of the songs sound so different from each other.

it's very fun I like it Will I listen to again: 92%

I grooved the whole time. Fantastic flows. Listened before? N Saved to library? Y Favorite track(s): Freedom, Break, What's Golden, High Fidelity, Sum Of Us, I Am Somebody ⭐⭐⭐⭐: Really liked it. Saved a bunch of tracks.

Such a great album! I already knew What's Golden, but the rest was new to me - loved it

Though this album was pretty good, I prefer my Ozomatli without High Fidelity

I Am Somebody who really likes this album.

wow this is amazing! really like everything about this. every track had me bobbing my head. I'm giving it a 4 instead of 5 because rap is typically outside of my 'taste zone', so I wont be spinning the record all the time -- but i will be putting it on, cover to cover, when the mood strikes. fav track: if you only knew. love the flute!

Not my favorite genre but enjoyable

Overall: 7/10 A hip hop album that feels more old school than I expected. Other than the more modern (at the time) production, this sounds like it could have come out in the early 90s. I dig it, these guys have great voices for rap and great lyrics. Fav Song: After School Special

cool fun beats but a bit long and repetitive

Had an old school rap vibe. Enjoyed this.

This was pretty catchy and cool. I loooove one guy’s voice and it was very mesmerizing whenever he had a verse. I enjoy this kind of alternative 90s hip hop sound and the incorporation of so many instruments so this was a good listen. *Fav tracks: A Day At The Races; Thin Line*

This didn't leave as big a mark as I may have wanted, but it's still a real funky time for much of it. I like the way they rap together and the rhyme and flow is really good. I like the production too, and the music, samples and beats are always at least interesting. 3.5 rounded up.

I’m not normally a huge fan of rap/hip-hop, but I really enjoyed this - great storytelling and fun to listen to.

I liked this album quite a lot and was tossing up giving it 5 stars. In the end I didn't think there quite enough killer songs for 5.

My first impression is that I’m surprised this came out in 2002. If I hadn’t seen the year, I might have guessed mid 90s, maybe earlier. This is conscious rap with an old school heart. They sound influenced by A Tribe Called Quest. My second impression is that with so many rappers on the album (4 who are officially in the group plus a few guest features), there’s always some new flow or voice pulling your attention in a different direction. They trade verses and lines pretty quickly. It feels very collaborative. “A Day at the Races” is an incredible track! Lightning fast flows from everyone, and every line is delivered with impeccable and precise diction. I love how when one verse ends, they don’t even let a single beat pass before passing the baton to the next guy and launching into another verse. Really awesome. Great funk and soul samples throughout. And this last instrumental track?! Wow, awesome showcase for the two DJs in the group.

Damn gorgeous album. Still toe dipping in rap so call it a 4 sliding to 5.

This is a really well-made album. The lyrics are thoughtful, interesting, and smoothly delivered. The beats are funky and the rhythmic activity is super cool and creative. This is definitely my favourite hip-hop/rap album on the list so far. 8/10.

J5 went commercial, good album

A great, smooth rap album. Reminded me a lot of Tribe. Makes sense, since they're contemporaries. Lots of jazz samples, brought in some funk and soul elements. This is the kind of rap I like, I've found. It has something to say, it takes itself seriously, and the people behind it are coming at it with an artist's approach. They're trying to make a statement that is damn satisfying to listen to, one that keeps the listener returning. The entire thing is smooth, flows, and is a joy to listen to. The more of this, the better. Four stars. Standout Tracks: This Is, Freedom, If You Only Knew, Break, A Day at the Races, Thin Line, Hey, I Am Somebody

So so chill, proper verses, top-tier sampling, great basslines, sweet vocals, love it

I'm not a massive hip hop fan, but I do enjoy the odd bit now and then and J5 is one of my go to albums. Perhaps if I listened to more, I'd appreciate the difference between that album and this one but, as it is, Power In Numbers just feels like a worse version of J5. Still good enough to get a four though.

Favorite tracks: Break, Sum of Us, What's Golden Definitely liked this album as a whole, but it lost a star for me because a lot of the backing tracks were just a little too boring. Acetate Prophets was really fun and I wish the same energy was there for the whole album! Also, it's so fun stumbling upon a sample I know in the wild a là High Fidelity (5th Element by Classified)

Pretty good album

Excellent, tastefully done hip hop with nice flair and touch of older school of the art. While Jurassic 5 is not unknown to me, I've not listened to an awful lot of their music. Mostly played by friends at work and while I've ment to come back to them, I always tend to pick something else. Maybe that'll change this time 🤷‍♂️

Jurassic 5 reminds me of my college roommate and the smell of pot and coffee at 7:00 am. It kind of washed over me at that time but I really enjoyed this as western mass driving music

Cool rhythms here, from the beats to the flows! This album is paced really well.

Quirky beats and lyrics. Good flow

This is a great album I listened to over and over once I finally bought it back when it came out. Listening to it now was a great reminder of how I got into hiphop

Exceptionally good toe tapping head bopper

Fantastic album! Reminds me of when I was younger.

Good stuff. I didn't really seek out or get into much hip hop back in the day, my loss.

Hip-hop/rap with soul and jazz samples, political lyrics. Nice hooks and samples, nice flow, mellow sound. The effect does wear off a bit but the premise is solid. Rhymes are tight throughout. Is that Quest in there? Thin Line is a nice conventional track about relationships One of Them is homophobic, but tongue-in-cheek I hope? Similar to Gorillaz in places. I guess because of funk/soul samples with rap. Fun eastern sample on Acetate Prophets Best track - Freedom, If You Only Knew 4 stars

I really like this record. I need melodies in my hip hop so this works way better for me than Enter the Wu Tang which came up this week as well. Need to go back to it more.

I am not sure what I was doing in 2002 to miss this, but I'm glad I heard it now!

Powerful album. I've never listened to J5 before but I enjoyed most of the tracks on this album, I was quite surprised that I hadn’t heard of them before considering how much I’m into hip hop. I really enjoy conscious rap it’s my thing, intelligent, fluid, laid back hip hop. From the start I found myself bopping up and down to this. The enjoy the tight flows, scratch-heavy DJ work, and the overall old school style mixed with jazzy and reggae undertones create such a smooth sound. The samples on this are insane too! Overall I feel this album doesn’t get nearly as much credit as it deserves Favourite Tracks: Freedom, Break, A Day At The Races, What's Golden, Thin Line, After School Special, One Of Them, Hey, I Am Somebody

My first music language is rock. I’ve noticed Gen X rockers like me are more likely to identify with this kind of hip hop, and I am no different.

4 stars

the quintessential skateboarding album of the early 2000's

This is quality hip hop. Beats and flow are class.

Infectious beats, lyrically precise. I'd never heard anything from this album before. It's good, but nothing hooked me to pull me back in to it or play it again.

I really liked this one. I remember hearing of Jurassic 5, but I can't say that I have ever actually listened to them before now. This was great - really fun, great lyrics, and some really interesting social commentary. I really enjoy this genre, kind of an alternative hip-hop. It reminded me of A Tribe Called Quest, Us3, and The Roots.

Overall pretty good! I really like the funky samples and instruments like flutes and things in it. Overall a decent 4 star album, another surprise for me for a hip hop album, not really being a hip hop listener.

Amazing! Old, but gold. This style of rap sounds a bit dated now, but it’s delivered SO well, with confidence and conviction, that it’s still a pleasure to listen to. These guys knew how to tell stories in rhyme and how to make space for each other. They were a crew — a form that seems out of style now. Jurassic 5 makes me wish that style would come back. A 4.

not bad.

This is my favorite type of hip hop. I thought this was a really fun, energetic and sometimes emotional album that I enjoyed listening to. I don't listen to much hop hop outside of when it pops up on the generator, but I would come back to this in a heartbeat. My standouts are "If You Only Knew" "Break" "Remember His Name" and "Sum Of Us." It may not be perfect, but it's just a great listen.

I feel like hip hop just doesn't sound like this anymore.

Alternativ hip hop Boom-bap/oldschool revival.

A bit surprised to see this in here over the debut and the sophomore as it's comfortably below both of them in mine, and probably many's estimations,, both are 5 star albums for me! That said, it's still a good album, particularly the first half, maybe even two thirds but like a lot of hip hop records of the era, this could have been trimmed 2 or 3 songs and been better for it. The highs here are high though, Freedom, A Day at the Races, What's Golden_ and High Fidelity, all really strong tracks. They're just a great group and I really miss this type of thing in hip-hop these days which tends to focus more on the single artist.
