Reviews (page 3 of 12)

I have said before that I'm not averse to a bit of rap, hip hop, that sort of thing. But the one thing that I really don't go for is politics in music. If you're going to do that then the actual music has got to be right up there, really really good. And this started with a political song. A political song that musically, like the rest of the album, was right out of the top drawer. This is an absolutely stonking album. It had me dancing around at work (a feat no other album on here has achieved). I loved it, this is why I'm doing this 1001 album thing. Can only give it one score. 5.

Tribe called quest/De La Soul vibe

# Playlist track - If You Only Knew # Notes - Never heard of them before. - Amazing album! - Fun beats, good flow, cool samples. - Reminds me of a Tribe Called Quest and De la Soul. - Definitely recommend, even to people that are not into hiphop.

Perfect hip hop album!

I'd always figured I was gonna like Jurassic 5. Even back when my sole experience with the group was Charli 2na playing Neil deGrasse Tyson in an Epic Rap Battle, from his voice alone I figured I'd be down for them. What ended up surprising me, then, was exactly **how much** I liked this album and Jurassic 5. Let's get out of the way the thing I always notice first: the beats. Phenomenal, front to back. All the props in the world to Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark. These smooth n' fresh jazz rap beats, next to these hard knockin' boom bap beats — and me being me, I feel like I might tend towards the latter more, but either way both are great. The flows these rappers are doin' on top of these beats, too — goodness. I can't remember the last time I heard beats and flows work together this well. And seriously, what a voice on 2na, I swear. Then there's the lyrics. Normally, I'd give this album high marks on the beats alone with paying too much mind to the lyrics — which, to be 100, isn't really my choice; as I've said in many other reviews, I'm melody-first and find it hard to pay attention to lyrics on initial listens. That's just how I am. But with this album, for whatever reason, either because I was trying a new thing where I played TETRIS DX at the same time, or because they're honestly that good... I found myself really interested in the lyrics here. To the point where I noticed a lot of the subjects and stories, where usually I'd only be able to grab one or two lines at best. And from that, I can tell that this is the kind of album that has a lot of serious things to say, but while also keeping it a fun and enjoyable listen. Seriously, you could throw this stuff on just to jam to and you wouldn't hafta worry about the whole "Y'all don't wanna hear, you just wanna dance" effect. And I didn't even see the twist coming on "Remember His Name", goodness. Great flow, great beats, great lyrics... Yeah, that sounds like a 5 to me. I feel like this is the most positive I've been in a long time towards a rap album I haven't heard before. Which, y'know, nothing against none of those, but this album really is just that fun and engaging. Heck, I might even hafta go check out the rest of their discography at some point. Not bad for a group I'm only aware of thanks to Epic Rap Battles — where, no joke, I originally thought Tay Zonday was playing Neil deGrasse Tyson. That's what a lack of knowledge of Jurassic 5 will lead you to, I guess.

Fucking WOW. This is a pretty damn superb bit of hiphop from a group I wasn't aware of 'til now. And the beats they rap over are simply immaculate works. Solid 5 Stars.

I’m at a really nice 5. Took a few tracks to get going, but once this thing hit its stride, there was no fucking stopping it – that is 56 minutes of stellar rapping. There’s a lot of underground influence here, and it certainly shows in the sample-heavy production style. Once they really get their flows in motion, this becomes catchy as a motherfucker; “A Day at the Races” is the point at which this album finds an unstoppable groove, and a rising tide really does lift all ships in this case. The beats feel more free, their voices blend even better, and the lyricism takes a step up to another level, all while continuing to sound extremely hypnotic, and pretty easy to follow along to. It flows all the way until the last track. I did like it, with the sort of avant-garde sample work, but it threw me for a loop in terms of being the closer. It’s more of a bonus than anything, so I don’t have any real complaints. Really, the biggest compliment I can give to the album is that it’s just really fun to listen to; at its very core, this is extremely catchy & melodic rap that harkens back to the origins of the genre, in a way that I think might’ve been lost in some of late 80s-90s gangsta rap, and was thankfully revived throughout the early 2000s (perhaps culminating in the mainstream with Eminem’s 2002-2003 stuff). That doesn’t mean this album doesn’t go hard at times, but there’s a real focus on soundscapes and enjoyability rather than heavier lyricism. Yes, the braggadocious aspect of rap is in full force here, but it’s presented with a lot of unity that feels like I, as the listener, get to be a part of the team. Their group flow really does do it for me. So, yeah, it’s a pretty fast 56 minutes, it kept me extremely captivated, and with the lyrics in front of me, I felt like I could find their flows pretty fast. It might be a little too old-school at times, but for my tastes, I really liked it. Once it found its rhythm, it was just undeniably cool. Feels like a hidden gem on the list, and it’s a pretty easy 5 for me.

Really great.

Couldn't decide between a 4 or a 5, so a 5 it is. Just enjoyable, didn't hear a bad song. Loved the samples, beats, and flute. A nice change of pace. 5/5

Great album. First album from Jurassic 5 for me. Wasn't expecting much but, this album is so good. The rapping and lyrics flow is perfect, and the beats are good!

Mal was anderes :)

Truly believe hip hop peaked in the early 2000s. Can’t fault it

This hits me right in the rap sweet spot. Not a whole lot of fluff. Just solid beats and lyrics. Head was bobbing throughout. After School Special is greatness as is What's Golden. Chali 2na has an amazing voice and I wish he was around more...or maybe he is and I just don't know it (shame). I finished the album and immediately started it again. That's how you know it is good. Damn good. 4.5/5

Blind album and artist. Wow this blew me away. This is a hidden gem among the growing popularity of rap and hip hop. It totally sounds like it came out of the 90s. The beats were fire, the lyrics were creative. I couldn't get enough of this. Multiple hits, seamless transitions, cool skit, creative lyrics. This is why I started this journey, and this is amazing.

Favourite tracks: freedom; break; if you only knew; a day at the races; what's golden; thin line; hey; I am somebody; sum of us

I really enjoyed it)))

Shame on me for not expanding my hip-hop listening when I was younger. Ah well, the second best time to plant a tree is *right now*.

Really enjoyed this album. I'm not super well versed in the rap genre but each track has had a very solid groove. Their flow is much more melodic than a lot of rap I've heard. Reminds me of my favorite group Bone Thugs N' Harmony in that regard.

didn't expect that, wow great album

A nice surprise. The lyricism (with exceptional use of rhymes and alliteration) makes this album that has age great. I’ll keep listening Jurassic 5 and check of their discography.

Really good, I knew some of the hits but hadn't listened to full album. It was such a familiar sound as I've listened to a lot of "golden-age/throwback" rappers. Nice to hear who they were emulating.

Really loved this album, great production and sampling. Great beats and vocals. Really cool to hear Chali 2na, where I’d only heard him before on the Linkin Park track Frgt/10, really cool nostalgia there.

Great album. Genre changing

This album was sooo goood. The frontmans voice is so smooth and silky and the whole thing's just a joy to listen to. Heard some songs I've heard before, and some that were new to me. Loved everything. Thin Line, After School Special and Sum of Us were my faves. Good stuff.

Mad asl i skipped this the first time. Its so good.

Being sincere on any level isn't cool in 2024 (it wasn't cool in 2002 either) but it doesn't make Jurassic 5 any less good

There's a plethora of sounds on this funky, cinematic hip hop album, which is refreshingly full of positive vibes. Amongst the grooves there's some soul in the sung parts of 'Freedom', jazzy flute on 'If Only You Knew', audio verite on 'React' (and others), trippy electronica on 'Remember His Name, jazzy organ and sax on 'What's Golden', creepy strings (or possibly mellotron) on 'Thin Line'. The lyrics are full of wit and strike a fine line between being fun and meaningful. All in all, this is a highly accessible, creative, spellbinding record that is a joy to listen to from start to finish.

Great album. Chilled, laid back, nice hip hop

I want to not like this as much I do, as they are the clean hipster friendly non problamtic hip hop. But this is just an awesome album the ryhmes are tireless invetive and funky. The beats hit every time and hard. Theres not a lot not to love on this album.

Jurassic 5, have a solid catalogue of work. Apart from Charli 2na and Cut Chemist I couldn't name the five, but they are fabulous. The makers of this list clearly didn't spend the hours listening to the album J5 that I did, which I can (and will) sing along to regularly in that 'finishing-the-sentences' way of half remembering a rhyme. Maybe I should listen to this album another ten times to see how it holds up against J5. I'm up for that.

Really digging the jazzy elements. Reminds me of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtracks. I haven’t listened to this kind of hip hop much and I really like it!

4.5 rounded up hell fuckin yes!!!?!?!??!!!!??!?!!! highlights: freedom, if you only knew, remember his name (feb 19 2026)

Mind roasting instrumentals. I’d love a version without the lyrics. But solid as fuck regardless. A new fave. Added to my library

Used to listen to this album all the time on my hospitality days at dux de lux . Bonus points for the Nelly furtado feature

There is some absolute monster tracks on this album. Well produced and funky beats throughout. Loved it.

On my shopping list.

Absolutely loved this. Best album I've had in a while, stands out over some of my other recent 5s. Great to discover something new that I'll definitely keep listening to.

Absolutely loved this. Was so much fun to listen to and actually quite refreshing :)

I guess I am a sucker for old rap.

The wordplay and lyricism and instrumentation and arrangement are mindblowing, but it does feel like a bit of a relic that doesn’t sound very 2002

Awesome!

This is great from front to back. it manages to keep a great groove throughout the album. It's a fun listen and I'm sure I'll be back many more times to listen.

so far i really enjoy the first song, this is normally not my music. im thinking of the boondocks. pretty cool album tbh.

I really enjoyed this album. It was creative and there is so much range. A change from the dominating genres on this list.

It's hip hop for people who don't think they like hip hop, and also for people who like hip hop.

Jurassic 5 gets unfairly lumped in to “old school” or “conscientious” rap without taking the fact that they’re more than the sum of those parts. This album is a great example of staying true to a style without sounding stale or dated. Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist really take this to heart; they've got plenty of skills but they know to keep it simple and let the three MC's really shine (Acetate Prophets excluded of course) I think “A Day At The Races” is a great example of executing their perfectly enunciated and technical style without sounding like something out of the 80s or preachy. The following track “Remember his name” perfectly blends in to the early 2000’s radio rap but without following that overproduced trend that was prevalent. "One of Them" is one of the few boasting/dissing "anyone else" tracks I've ever thought wasn't corny. There’s a reason J5 have been around as long as they have: their albums can only belong to them and they’ve never deviated from what they’re good at so far as to sound forced. On this one, the features fit right in; even Nelly Furtado which I thought might be a train wreck. Leaving Kool Keith as an acapella was a brilliant idea. Overall really excellent.

July 22, 2003 I went to the Blue Cross Arena to see Mudvayne, Linkin Park, and Jurassic 5. One of these groups was not well received. This album is great. Smooth and really easy to fall into. A different style of rap than I'm usually into. Added to playlist.

That bass line in the opener is fantastic. Is this my favorite rap album? I've never even heard of this group before (not difficult), but the melding of rap and jazz and positive messaging really works for me. I'm not sure I've ever heard anything like this. This album brought me joy. So well done. Loved the little kid on After School.

You know what, I loved this. I'd never heard of them before, but I was totally jamming along with every track. This is my favorite hip hop album we've had so far (setting aside 36 Chambers) Album cover: B-

FINALLY!! I've had 3 weeks of shit to just OK albums. This one is fantastic. For some reason I stopped paying attention to J5 after Quality Controll. Wish I didn't. 5 STARS!

Brilliant album. Favourite tracks are Freedom, Break, A Day At The Races and What’s Golden. Absolutely love Thin Line and Sum Of Us too 5/5

This was so cool. The rhymes were excellent and the flow was absolutely amazing. I've never heard of Jurassic 5 before, but I am now a huge fan. So well done. Five stars.

Loved this album.

Secondary to Quality Control, but still excellent.

5/5 - my first J5 album (seems ages ago)

oh now this is real good. hell yeah

One of my favorite album from the recommendations

Really fun rap album with an old school classic feel to it! Easy to listen to lyrics, fun musical and sound elements, the 1950s speaker voice, all of it came together smoothly.

It was the best album so far I’ll say, not as much je ne sais quoi as Queen II but it did made me dance and enjoy it a lot, not once did I want to skip a song. At first you’re like, what is this? But then it’s like “WOW! that’s supper co-ool!” 8.2/10

Funky fun

I actually enjoyed the hell out of this!

Smoking extreme spinach!

J5 is the best! I’ve seen them live at Lollapalooza in 2001. Love this album! Definitely a classic in the hip hop genre. A lot of amazing features, too.

Power In Numbers might be the most underrated Hip-Hop of all time. Incredible beats, samples, instrumentation and rhythms. It harkens back to a time when Hip-Hop records sounded like they created by actual humans. 9.0/10

Hip hop not normally my jam but this is fantastic.

I found this to be very enjoyable. I had only a vague knowledge of this band even existing, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover how much I liked this album. I had to listen a second time to decide for sure, but this is definitely a 5 star album.

could i write poetry to this? y

One of my favorites!

6/5 just so damn good

Jurassic 5 stars.

incredibly syncopated hip hop with some of the funkiest beatflips i've heard in a good bit. if the wutang clang were jazz or swing nerds, this is what the result would be. it's not too often when you listen to some underground hip hop and you wanna listen to it a thousand more times but here we are. literally a group i've only heard of till now and i'm a fan.

Yeah, this smacks. Already knew a few tracks, but it's barely any filler and this type of rap is exactly my jam. Good amount of features without feeling bloated (I'm looking at you, Humanz).

This was a banger

My favourite kind of hip hop tbh. Love J5.

9/10. Overall this was a great album. Beat & rap combinations are top notch. And there is some uniqueness in their style. I am actually surprised they weren't more mainstream with this style. It does run long and starts to get a little bit stale for me -- songs start to all sound the same.

For me this record is been a corner stone.

Excellent album that had a great sound and reminded me of some great times as a teenager.

This album is what's golden.

A brilliant introduction to Jurassic 5. Funky beats, brilliant rhymes and superb instrumentation. A blast from start to finish.

Classic, could not stay still.

Not my type but this is definitely fire, loved it

Dope yo

This was a really fun surprise. Never heard this before. Automatically liked everything. Good, soulful jazzy hip hop, with real singing and real flow. Nothing here to hate.

This was very much my kind of thing. Great beats, interesting flow, good contrast between the voices. Break and High Fidelity were a couple of standouts.

Lets go, Chali 2na. This is dope as hell. Great flow, great sampling, really well presented. Thin Line is a great track. Sum Of Us is another banger. WOW DDT!

I'm not a big hip-hop fan, but greatness is still easily recognizable. There's a few songs that I don't like at all (either Break or React, I don't remember already), but otherwise this slaps hard. This isn't quite best of the best, but it is excellent from beginning to end. Beats go hard, lyrics are topical and well crafted.

Bought this when it was released. Waves of memories.....Thin Line...love you Sped

I’ve never listened to this artist before, so this was a totally new experience for me. I didn’t know what to expect going into this album. This album was a joy to listen to and I’ve listened to it more than once already. There isn’t a single song I didn’t save on Spotify as I was listening through it. The quality of the lyricism in this album is incredible, that’s what kept me engaged the most when I listened to it for the first time. I was blown away time and time again with every bar I heard. That isn’t even mentioning how good the beats are. They elevate the album to a totally different level. I thoroughly enjoyed this, it was well worth the listen. Just a solid album all-round and one that I’ll definitely be coming back to.

As a college student in the early 2000s, I LOVED J5. This album is so cleanly produced with amazing lyrical content that hits on all levels, society, love, hurt and enjoyment of life. Though I prefer Quality Control as my favorite J5 album, this album just rips from track 1 all the way through the end.

Great jams. Driving without being dramatic.

Represent. 5

5 stars for J5

I'm amazed this slipped under my radar. This album is straight gold top to bottom. Quintessential 90s hip hop group. Crazy good beats, positive messages, killer flows from multiple members. The production is fantastic. Each track flows to the next. Life really kicked me in the teeth trying to listen to this record and even after having to stop it 4 times I was still excited to come back and it never lost its freshness.

I've heard the name Jurassic 5 but probably couldn't name a song by them. This album was a vibe. Loved the soul/funk influenced samples, loved the voices and flow of all the guys, loved most of the lyrics (a couple lines haven't aged super well). I didn't even really mind the interludes because they were done in an interesting way. 5/5 for me.

Such a great album! Awesome beats and smooth flow.

Great Listen. Clearly a group who had matured from the early years. Still held their own sound but with a great mix of contemporary beats and some jazz.

I've heard this album sooooooo many times. This was my go-to in the early 2000's hanging with friends in Boulder/Denver.

I hate to say that they don't make music like this anymore but that's so true in this case. This album is a perfect example of what was great about late 90s/early 2000s hip-hop. The boom bap beats, the clear and punchy flows, and the positive messages come together beautifully for a solid and engaging album from front to back.

Love it

GOAT level hip hop

A whole bunch of infectious and clever tracks full of character. Not a single miss on this album.

Has all the important musical highlights: jazz flute, crunchy noises, clever lyrics, and catchy riffs.

SO GOOD.

Enjoyable this may be my favorite hip hop album I’ve ever listened to

This is a stormer. I bought it way back but clearly hadn't remembered how good it is, just consistently excellent throughout. I probably didn't give it as much love as their debut back in the day because it doesn't have stand-out single type material but the overall quality is really high and the production is superb.

Great sampling and production, clever lyrics, and West Coast vibes

Excellent. This is pure hip hop. Very versatile mood- good for everything from working out to chilling with a cup of tea

Fantastic hip-hop/rap album that has the rare quality of being (mostly) suitable for my kids and likely faces no threat of needing to be viewed through the lens of history to be appreciated. Hold on to this feelin'! One of those albums that pulls me back in time to good moments, so it's hard to be critical of it.

Chali 2na?? BANGERS

Liked the entire album, nice surprise from an artist /group ive never heard of

Bangers, loved it.

Very good. Catchy, fun, energetic.

This is the style of hip-hop I can listen to forever.

Kickass funk/hip-hop album, loved the vibes on this

Thus far, Hip Hop has shaped up to be among my Worst Genres here - I'm very happy to rectify that now. Knew their name but never heard it before and I enjoy this a lot. I have heard that one voice, though, and yep, Chali 2na on Roots Manuva's 'Join The Dots'. Fast Forward: This sentence now is from a few hours later than the previous ones, been playing this all day long. Head nodding fun. It eventually loses a bit of momentum during the tracks after Thin Line but that's on me. Great stuff.

god is real and he gave me this album any excuse to listen to power in numbers i will take one of the greatest hiphop albums all time incredible production, great beats, talent shown all round this is a flat 5/5 no debate

I really enjoy this genre of music!

The production on this album is IMPECCABLE. Great list of features and tight bars. Love it. Standout Tracks: Freedom, A Day at the Races, What's Golden

I love it

The flow & rhythm syncopation is so good.

Incredibly well done. Even a middle-aged white guy can appreciate the talent.

Freedom A Day At The Races What's Golden Thin Line

Yeah this a classic.

Really enjoyed this - had no idea it existed. The funky baseline does it for me, with just the right amount of voice over the top. Full of interesting ideas and I'll certainly listen to this again.

Smooth but powerful

Really, really great. Wow.

I already loved quality control and man I was wrong to stop there. This album is amazing. Starts strong, ends strong. 5

If will smith wasn’t corny he’d be in Jurassic 5

One of the greatest hip hop records ever.

Awesome album!!!

I had no knowledge of this album or Jurassic 5 before this, and I’m sad I didn’t. This album was consistently great throughout and never had a dip in quality. The instrumentals were good, the vocals were good, the samples were good, nothing to not like here.

Loved this. Only recognized one track but album was great.

Like the platonic ideal of hip-hop. So bona fide. So... fun and bouncy and HIP HOP HIP HOP

A little long for me, and I think “Hey” and “Acetate Prophets” are obvious weak spots that could be cut. Still, I love this album and it’s bound up in so much nostalgia for me that I can’t not give it 5 stars. Highlights: What’s Golden, Sum of Us, Freedom, I am Somebody

I didn't expect to like it; I 'hate Rap." I loved it. I'm so glad I'm doing this, getting exposed to music I normally would avoid-- Even though I have had to suffer through a lot of "Metal." to reach this gem.

always a great listen!

J5 never dissapoints, one of the greatest lyrical hip hop groups of all time

2x geluisterd, 2x ziek hard genoten

Power in numbers

Damn. Im not fan of rap but this album is fire.

*previously listened to. A LOT* Power In Numbers does an impressive feat in hip hop: it blends technical excellence with unmitigated soul. A fully realized album that is able to keep things fresh and still plays well today. The bulk of the album is produced by Jurassic 5's resident producers, Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist, which adds a sense of cohesiveness. Furthermore, most of the quests spots are underground hip hop veterans (minus the odd, but well fitting Nelly Furtado feature) which meld well into the album. Technically everyone shows up at all times. The "give the drummer some" moment of "Acetate Prophets" which lets Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist chop up some of the more oddball samples that would have gone missed under the MC's pyroclastic flows. A particular example of verbose agility is Chali 2na's verse on album stand-out "A Day At The Races." 2na's deep voice moves and glides effortlessly across the beat, providing one of the best technical rapping displays I've ever heard. Technical prowess as a praise in hip hop often comes with the hidden diss of "but they're not really saying anything." All the MCs of J5 are equally talented at painting a picture of telling a story, sometimes together like in "Remember His Name." Their voices all seem to compliment each other sonically which works separate on when they work together on a hook.

I mean, this one already is in my heavy rotation. Jurassic 5 is basically the Power Rangers of Hip-Hop as far as I'm concerned. All of them flow together so well and they ooze confidence with every rhyme. Instant classic for me.

Solid album. Hip hope doesn't really sound like this anymore, and I wish some of it still did. Positive vibes, solid group and a strong message. And the beats are dope.

I’ve never heard of Jurassic 5 and I love them now. Their beat, meter, and content are very powerful, creative, personal, and engaging. I feel the passion behind the music - the primal but educated need to get these sounds out. I love them.

Masterpiece!

love this, sounds like early hip hop but with a contemporary feel

This album has been a regular listen ever since I first picked it up around 20 years ago. Great beats with some wonderful lyricism throughout.

this album bangs.

Great album. It definitely brings back some early soul and hiphop vibes while also feeling like it could have come out yesterday.

Å fy faen ja ass... Dette er 10/10 old school boom bap fack ju ap the beat don't stahp. Legendarisk album

Possibly my favourite album reviewed here so far. Lucky enough to see J5 in Edinburgh back in 2004, and this was as fresh now as it was then: beats, lyrics, breaks and production. A classic

This is one of my more favorite styles of hip-hop. I love the jazz elements that give it a cool flair.

A very strong album with Standouts in every track.

Hip hop/trip hop. Great heavy beats. 5/5

I was not familar with this band until just recently. I love this album

Man this is peak hip hop for me. Good beats and flow, and I had never heard it. My first 5. Review of Reviews: The people who hadnt heard it love it, and those who had heard it love it. People who are receptive to hip hop recognize all the pieces to this album work. Best Track: A Day at the Races

Wow! I absolutely loved this album from start to finish!! If I can’t complain about it then I can’t argue with a five. Added so many songs

J5 is so good, that album is legendary

A J5 classic

This is my first time listening through this whole album. Damn it's good.

Banger after Banger

Great album, some notes of folk with high pitch in hip hop and a very good sense of rythm

Very good album!

Known before: Band Standouts: 2. Freedom 4. Break 14. One of them 9/10

Known Before: Standouts: 3. If You Only Knew 4. Break 6. A Day At The Races 8. What's Golden 9.0

Reminds me of erik B and Rakeem

Shocked this made the list! Wore this cd out driving around in David Berry’s turquoise Pontiac Sunfire. 4/5 on merit (One of Them was a skip then and still is) but when you’re 17 and eating a whopper riding shotgun around Sherwood Park with nowhere to go it’s a 13/5 so I’ll average it out to a 5.

Holy Fuck!! My whole Junior High in one CD, this thing wore out many a Discman. I’m not even going to try and be objective, 6/5. BK! Power in Numbers!!

A+ flow, delivery, and production is very fun really solid album all around

A hidden gem. Works equally well as background music as it does as the main event thanks to equally skillful lyrics and melodies. The beats are fresh, the hooks catchy, and the sampling straight out of the 80s. At times it feels like an Avalanches album, in a great way. I can't put this album at any place or time, it feels apt for anywhere, anytime. 31/10/23

Beautifully crafted and silky caramel rhymes. Hungry for more tasty ear morsels.

Had never heard before, except "What's Golden" which I heard a TON in a video game... I think Tony Hawk's Underground? Or maybe an ATV game. Something on my PS2. Anyway. The album rules.

Fucking boss mate

Excellent. Hadn't thought about Jurassic 5 in quite awhile.

Great hip hop album

impeccable flows, unique beats, skits weren’t bad either. honestly enjoyed every track!

Amazing rap album ! I am not a biiig fan of rap in general, but this one stands out a lot. A lot of variation in the rythms etc it’s amazing !

How in the HELL had I never heard of these guys, or this spectacular album. I thought I'd found a lost Tribe Called Quest album after a few tracks ! Loved it.

Love me some J5. Let’s hope it’s a start of an awesome 1001 week.

This album has excellent production, meaningful lyrics, and overall catchy beats and sounds and is probably the best hip hop album Ive ever heard. I will listen to this again and I highly recommend it.

4.667 average per track. Excluded “this is” and “react”. Fantastic album.

This is kicking! Very good. Jazzy and soulful hip hop. Very easy, but interesting beats. Slow paced. Multiple wicked MCs!

Love this

Haven’t listened since high school. Loved it

great album! has a fantastic flow from start to finish. Utilizes so many different sounds (If You Only Knew has a great jazz flute background) and the lyrics range anywhere from philosophical to relationships between friends and lovers (Thin Line). I havent listened to much in the way of alternative hip hop but I kept this on from start to finish with no breaks!

Jurassic 5 stars

funky fresh.

- fun to see Nelly Furtado on here - slick, cohesive; the skits on some songs were fun - reminded me at many points of Madvillainy by Madvillain - the track I Am Somebody reminded me strongly of the Silk Sonic album

Lätt det bästa albumet vi har fått här. Varje låt var skitbra och varje sampel var roligt och intressant. Detta i kombination med roliga mellansnack, snygga övergångar och skit bra text så var detta 5/5. Favorit låtar: Remember his name och break

Men måste jag välja favorit: If you only knew, Thin line, High fidelty

The best 'new to me' hiphop album we've had on this list. Blown away by it.

I love their sound great sounding lyrics against the music love how their voices work together. like the message. love the bassy sounds,.

Great old rap music from US. Wonderful music from the best times of HipHop. I love this album, even I never listened to it before. Now I will be coming back to it.

Blissful

Seminally funk-tastic!

5 stars at LEAST. So good.

Good synergy, good beats, good production. Good album!

really excellent production holding up occasionally shaky lyrics (the perils of a large group, probably). whenever the lyrics aren’t shaky, however, this is pretty much perfect. the melodies especially are fabulous and way ahead of their time. great vibe and a great listen. the rare 5 which has distinct errors, because the rest of it is so good.

Top!

God I love J5. One of the most talented, articulate, and positive rap groups ever. At the risk of sounding like an old man, I wish the kids today would rediscover this genre the way they've rediscovered 90s music.

Out of nowhere the grooves 10/10

One of the best rap albums I’ve ever heard 5/5

Really cool sounds. I very much enjoyed this one.

Great grooves and rhymes

I fucking loved this. It really feels like 5 people in a group. The call-and-response moments are fantastic and I absolutely love every song flowing into the next with something. The little boy is so adorable. I've listened twice and will listen again in the near future.

Dude! This was a total surprise. I knew the name of this group but had never heard them before. I love the beats on this. The glow is sooooo good and it's got this this laid back happy vibe I'm loving. Totally adding Jurassic 5 to my rotation.

Thoughtful, intelligent. These guys are a class above. Brilliant variety.

Fantastic. They kept it moving and interesting for nearly an hour! Amazing sampling and melodies. Smart lyrics and driving instrumentals. Fav track is What's Golden.

Love the clarity and punchiness of the hi-hat, bass drum, and snare. Great production overall. I've got a couple J5 CDs tucked away but this one slipped past my radar; really pleased with Power In Numbers.

I forgot I listened to this a lot in highschool!

Great ambiance

Quality. This is what Hip Hop has the potential to be. Funky breaks cut up but matched with slick production. Amazing flow from a diverse set of rappers. Intelligent lyrical content with a (generally) positive message. It could be trimmed down a little, second half falls off a bit. Still one of the best Hip Hop albums of all time though.

Classic 90‘s Hip Hop, very easy to listen to and sick flows. Loved it.

Freedom!

Flawless. Saw these guys at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange in 2023 - nothing but class.

So, so good. Amazing flow and fantastic beats.

Great album from a rather underrated group!

Classic J5, great rhythms lyrics and rhymes

Great choice of samples

Well, this has to be a five from me, a Jurassic 5. A few years back I was working on a personal project to determine my favorite hip hop album from each year I've been alive, and this was my winner for 2002. I love the variety on here, both of voices and beats/instrumentals. There are wacky samples, wacky sounds, and a range of voices and deliveries. And even though it's 20 years old now, so much of it feels fresh and not at all outdated. I ultimately saved almost every song on here to my playlist, it just feels that vital to me. I may not know much else done by Jurassic 5, but this album is crazy. Favorite tracks: Just imagine the whole tracklist, minus like three songs on the back half. Album art: Nice color gradient, image definitely fits the title of the album. I'll excuse the stencil font because of just how much I love this project. 5/5

absolutely rips

Brilliant

aivan vitun kova. kyllä ne etniset ,,musiikkia osaa tehdä! laatu PYSYY... melkeinmpä jokainen biisi hyvä,,, jotkut parempia kun toiset toki... EI VOI OLETTAA:. ETTÄ JOKAINEN NYT OLISI HEHHEH... I loved this album. Funky, fresh. This good be a new favourite

This is 🔥

Everything I like in hip hop - good beats; good flow; good times.

Clean enough to eat my dinner off.

Chali 2na is fantastic. Loved this.

Great.

I’m sad we seem to have lost this type of hip hop. Good-natured, socially conscious and not afraid to be hard-hitting. Pretty much every track a banger, “After School Special” has no business being that funky. I will be delving deeper into Jurassic 5 as a result of this recommendation.

Classic

It was great. I wish I could give it a 4.5 because I don’t think it’s perfect but definitely the best new album I’ve heard so far.

Consistently engaging, sometimes feels modern, and yet other times like the early 90s August 14, 2022

Love “underground” hip hop. Need a lot more of this.

So many great tracks - 'A Day at the Races' and 'High Fidelity' are classics. Their previous albums are even better. Some friends and I met Chali 2na at a festival at Hackney Marshes in 2001, he seemed embarrassed but grateful to receive our admiration - great guy. I have photographical evidence of this, but I may have been a couple of beers deep and halfway through a burger at the time, and there was no hiding either.

I remember listening to this when it came out. It didn't "hit hard enough" for me, but I did respect the flow. I am not sure if it's my new found appreciation for jazz or getting older, but this is a fantastic hip hop album that I definitely shouldn't have slept on as much as I did.

Modern throwback hip-hop.

Jurassic 5 get a 5 from me.

Бодренько

Owned this album. Loved it. Don’t know why I don’t still have it but it was a totally awesome re-listen for me.

Omg amazing. Heerlijke activistische old school hip hop

клёвый блин jazz-rap. ваще прям 10/10

Back-to-back days of excellent hip hop (Jay-Z)…what a treat! The flow at the end of A Day At The Races is incredible! And the flow there is only slightly better than the rest of the song, meaning the level is high throughout. The flow is really good throughout the whole album too. I am captivated by Charli 2na’s deep voice. It is divine. I think if he read terms of service agreements, I would actually know to what I’m agreeing. I echo jkav’s note on the positivity in the lyrics being refreshing. This is a great find and I will be listening on a regular basis. One nitpick: Acetate Prophets is kind of weird. It can go.

Old shull hip hop

Not much dissimilar from concrete school yard but that isn’t a bad thing

Really solid lyrics and theme. Awesome beats aswell.

Didn’t even know about this collective. Loved the production, the samples and the genuine love for life that comes out of these tracks!

Jurassic 5 - Power In Numbers ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’ve heard this group’s name before but never any of their music. I was very surprised by how fun this album is. Socially conscious, not misogynistic or crude, and some awesome raps. It’s not the style of music that I usually seek out that often, but I was really impressed.

jurassic grrraahh big 5 shi

Really dig this! Thoughtful lyrics, good flow, and those flute samples!

Powerful words. I appreciated the different vocals and beats

I wasn’t feeling this at the start but then I really liked Break and from then onwards the album was great. Top Track - Thin Line

I'm no a rap fun at all, but this one was pretty awsome.

Pretty good

classy and cool. the ensemble cast can get overwhelming if you don't already fuck with Jurassic 5 like that, and the conscious rap occasionally dips its toes into playful homophobia, but the production is snappy and unique enough to keep your attention. generally those slightly wacky early 2000's alt rap beats are just my favorite thing. favorite song is What's Golden or Thin Line. Or I Am Somebody. solid 4

I groaned a little when I saw what today's album was. I think I'm in a space where this style of music is not something that I naturally gravitate towards. Having said that, this was a really solid album. The beats and rhymes were engaging and smooth. The group fits in nicely with A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. Worth another listen

What a great vibe album. So many great bests, rhymes and hooks. My faves were What's Golden, Freedom and Sum of Us. J5 should be way bigger than they are.

83/100. Individual talent can open a door. Building something worthwhile usually requires more people walking through it. The boom-bap foundation is fantastic, and the jazz influences give the beats a warmth and personality that never gets old. Thankfully, the rapping is just as strong. The flows constantly shift, different vocal tones keep the songs dynamic and the group chemistry is excellent. What makes the album stand out is its focus on collective achievement. At a time when a lot of mainstream hip-hop was increasingly centered around wealth, status and individual success, Jurassic 5 doubled down on the idea of building something meaningful with other people. That sense of community runs through the entire record. What surprises me is how relatively little attention the album seems to get compared to many of its peers. The songwriting, performances and production are all strong enough that I would have expected it to have a larger reputation.

Not a genre I listen to often but I enjoyed it, every song seemed energetic and fun. I'll probably listen to Jurassic 5 more in the future

Really groovy basslines, nice instrumental and flowy barz, fire Meow meow

Actually really enjoyed this album! Had never heard of it before. Smooth as hell

I love the talking samples in “React” OMG the kid at the beginning of “After School Special”. So cute. “I Am Somebody” is a jam “Acetate Prophets” is crazy at the end and I love it.

Unfortunately, I just wasn't in the mood to listen to this at the time. It's really my style of hip-hop and maybe I'd love it another time. Acetate Prophets was awesome though Favorite Songs: Freedom, What's Golden, One of Them, Acetate Prophets

A T-Rex sneezes Brontosauri smoking green Velociraptor rhymes

5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background

Pretty solid progressive hip hop

Power in Numbers is an excellent hip hop album, although its level drops slightly towards the end.

Okay, I really like experimental and alternative rap. Ninja Tune is one of the labels that I will always give a try. Cut Chemist is heavily involved in that scene, often with DJ Spooky. Sure, I know J5. Maybe I wasn't listening to their albums but I knew a decent about of their stuff. This is pretty much an automatic 4 for me. This is definitely a time that I wish that this project was time based. I am sure that some of this stuff has roots in other popular culture. It is the second record I added to my favourites because I will be listening to a lot of these again. One of them and If only you knew were standouts for me.

Really really good. I find hiphop and similar rythm focused styles can end up being repetitive, but this album didnt make me loose attention any second. Base and background melodies are really catchy and rich (as in they really differ between songs so it makes it more interesting), and lyrics dont stay behind. Every song has a really strong hook that makes it stick and truly vibe with it. Also has some more experimental tracks and elements that make it stand out. I dont know what it is, but the formula that they have going on works (i feel like a snake being hipnotised out of its vase everytime a day at the races or whats golden plays), overall i really loved it, certainly will be giving it a second, third, and multiple more listenings.

experimental hiphop is always very hit or miss for me but this was a hit :-) really won me over abt halfway thru. will want to revisit!

Real good hip hop album, love their samples and mixes. Really unique and fresh throughout.

Started off slow but then I got really into it. I’ve never heard someone with that deep a voice rap before.

Dude this is exactly the celebration of hip hop you want to hear. It is so unique and silly yet loves itself so much. Gosh I love the breakbeats and the flows and the introductions and the kids singing it’s just a full cultural experience a celebration of all of it. Perfectly fun listen also iconic uses a lot of famous samples

Better than Coldplay

This is the rap I dig. Stories, beats, feeling,. thoughtful.

I really enjoyed this album. The songs were consistent, the messaging was strong, the beats and lyrics were on point. I enjoyed it very much and I am looking forward to hearing more from this artist. My favorite song was "I Am Somebody".

Enjoyed first time listening to album as a whole. It should be listened to as an album. Downgraded to 4 since rap hip hop is not my preferred sound. 0 songs added to playlist.

Excellent album.

Finally some good food. I like 90's hip hop even though I need to go into it more, so this was great carrying that 90's vibe into the 2000's. Nelly Furtado is on one of these songs, that instantly dates it. Will be listening again.

I had never heard of this group - saw that it was hip hop so didn't know what to expect as a couple of the hip hop records I've had haven't been great (some have been fantastic as well). This one was the latter, I found myself enjoying every song and man there are some great flows here and lyrical content. It's refreshing to hear rap/hip hop that isn't about the same topics, these guys are out here spreading some positivity and I'm all for it.

Very cool. Maybe too cool for me.

New school hip-hop väga mõnusa olemisega. Selline hea tuju, aga ikka tõsine hip-hop, sellist stiili ma võiksingi jääda kuulama. See, et räppareid ja produtsente on nii mitu, annab albumine ka tugevalt mitmekesisust juurde. 4.0/5

Täähän oli ihan raikasta kamaa! Hyviä sampleja ja kunnollista vanhan liiton meininkiä. Tykkäsin!

Definitely the style of hip hop I like the most. 5 was west coast but shared a lot of the same vibe and influence as the soul informed groups of the 90s. I like this album, but I’m putting it below those top tier albums. Still, very good. 3.7 (I’ll bump it to 4)

Like this type of hiphop

Had not listened to Jurassic 5 before. This was great!

good stuff. hadn't heard of this group before. 'a day at the races' is awesome, so is the kool keith feature. 3.5

i mean. fuck it. we chicken nugget. beats are hot. deep voice dude lowk sounds like the aqua teen hunger force theme. third eye chakras activated. going 14/17 ain't too shabby. 4.5.

Not my usual listening groove but groove it does. Some clever rhymes. I didn't spend any time analysing the lyrics but I can at least understand them and enjoying the change in voice as the next member takes up the rap. Extra point for "the verbal Herman Munster".

I've mostly only listened to Quality Control, don't know why I haven't branched out more. This is good stuff
