Genuinely amazing. Obsessed.
15/1001 Fetch The Bolt Cutters - Fiona Apple (2020) The day 'Fetch The Bolt Cutters' released was during the throes of the first UK lockdown. I wasn't getting out much, so I decided to go on a walk with the album and soak it in. I headed down to the beach and pressed play. I was immediately struck by how raw, honest, and crushing it was. Every track had more to discover and was endlessly replayable. 'I Want You To Love Me' is an up-front confrontation of desire, with 'Shameika' tackling the complex feelings of self-worth drilled into us in our childhood. The title track is really the manifesto of the project, with 'Under The Table' acting as its sister. The run of tracks from 'Relay' through to 'Heavy Balloon' delves further into more mature and difficult subjects, before 'Cosmonauts' acts as a brief breather. The final few tracks close out the album in a way that is hard to describe and impossible to criticise. It has been an absolute favourite of mine since the day I first heard it, and for 1001 to present me this album for another listen was a privilege. I cannot think of a single thing that I'd change or could improve. Nothing short of a masterpiece. ★★★★★
Älskar! Percsymfonierna! Så lekfullt, allvarligt och experimentellt på en gång!
älskar! bättre än förra gången jag lyssnade! har väl rensat min palett med all gubbrock
I really enjoyed the storytelling on this album along with the playing with the sound. It was cohesive but each song also brought something different and compelling.
This album was a life saver when it came out in April 2020, weeks after the worldwide Covid pandemic started, and on a more personal matter, my very old grandfather was dying. Its totally unconventional style, especially the percussions and some of the catchy songs (Under the table, Shameika) made me fell in love with the album at first listen. It works very well as a whole album. Fiona is an excellent songwriter and and a great performer with a disctintive style (she may sound off key when she isn't, that's the point). It's probably my favourite album from the past 10 years.
"Fetch the Bolt Cutters" is a significant departure from Fiona Apple's previous albums; she uses her home as an instrument and consequently it is a brilliantly quirky album, with a brilliantly quirky album cover, by a brilliantly quirky and distinctive artist. Hugely enjoyable. Five stars. 1 "I Want You to Love Me" (5/5) 2 "Shameika" (5/5) 3 "Fetch the Bolt Cutters" (4/5) 4 "Under the Table" (5/5) 5 "Relay" (4/5) 6 "Rack of His" (4/5) 7 "Newspaper" (5/5) 8 "Ladies" (5/5) 9 "Heavy Balloon" (5/5) 10 "Cosmonauts" (5/5) 11 "For Her" (5/5) 12 "Drumset" (4/5) 13 "On I Go" (4/5) Total - 60 Average - 4.62 290/1001 153/290 albums reviewed were new to me
Pretty great
I mean, come on
Hmmm
She could have kept making albums like Tidal and still been considered a solid artist. This shows how much further she can push her talents.
Step dancers would appreciate this album, and a lot of rap artists could learn from the lyrics Apple spits. Powerful, enjoyable, and worth more exploration.
I love Fiona Apple so I was pretty biased going in. I already loved Under The Table. Listening to the entire album and thinking about the themes of being trapped and restricted was so thought provoking and emotional. The sequence of Cosmonauts, For Her, and Drumset was my highlight of the album. I want you to love me is a fantastic opener as well. Perfectly captures the rage and insecurity of living life as a woman.
Great album each track is distinct but engaging
I like Fiona Apple, but she never really grabbed me the way she had other folks, but this is undeniably great.
One of my favorite albums of all time. It’s an automatic 5, so I didn’t need to listen to this. But I did.
The critics are honestly right about this one, Fantano is wrong, It's easily one of the best albums of the decade so far. Favourite Songs: I Want You To Love Me, Fetch the Bolt Cutters, Relay, Heavy Balloon, Cosmonauts. Least Favourite Songs: Drumset.
Fiona seems like an abrasive and annoying person, and seems to revel in this persona throughout this album (the song about getting kicked under the table for being annoying at a party comes to mind). That makes it all the more impressive that, by the end of the album, her creativity and ingenuity is just completely undeniable. Her talent overwhelms her annoyingness. The fact she's still able to surprise the listener multiple times per song while still mostly working within a pop framework is downright inspiring . Shemeka especially - it's almost hard to follow musically for a few measures, then that chorus comes out of nowhere but also seems to make perfect sense only in hindsight. The mix of bragadociousness (sic) and cracked vulnerability in her voice holds it all together. Only criticism I have is that I think some of these songs could have hit harder with a heavier bottom end. She chooses a jazzy stand up bass tone where i think a more standard heavy bass would rock harder. Particularly in the chorus of Cosmonauts, which is a great song I think could have been a bigger hit. Reading that she used garageband for alot of this album rather than real instruments might explain getting too cute with the tone a few times. Still - for post 2020s albums, this is a rose growing out of the wasteland
Reminds me so much of Covid. We were all clamoring so much for shared experiences that didn’t involve a pandemic, we found ourselves watching Tiger King and talking a lot about Fiona Apple. At first relisten to this album, I was kind of like “what the hell was I thinking ever liking this album?” It’s pretty hard on the ears. Rough voice, challenging melodies and weird arrangements. I’m like this is some Tom Waits bullshit. A few more times through and I’m back to really liking this album. The melodies are just kind of nuts and mesmerizing. The vocal harmonies too. Hits that kind of jazz adjacent space that Amnesiac sits in. Haven’t looked at the other reviews, but feel like I could be alone here!
One of the best albums of the 21st century! Incredible energy and lyrical ruckus! Under the table is an incredible jam. I also loved the drums/percussion throughout. A truly fantastic album front to back.
An unexpected perfect album in my mind. Creativity and execution are just off the wall on this.
Flashbacks to Grade 9. This is actually scary. The flashbacks are insane. Bad time of my life to be honest. Great album though. Truly like nothing else I've heard. It's so interesting and dynamic. Great addition. I can't believe it came out so recently. Her lyrics and storytelling is so vivid I love it. Every song means so much it's a pleasure to listen to. Fiona Apple as a person is so interesting to me I feel like she belongs in the 90s. I have no idea how old she is or anything about her she's soooo enigmatic. This is the kindve music I listened to when I was younger to seem pretentious but didn't actually like, and now it's flipped Fiona Apples too tiktokified to be cool now but I think I finally understand a lot of it. Fiona Apple said she hates men so now I hate men. Favourite: For Her Least favourite: Newspaper
Definitely the worst Fiona Apple album imo. But she's a top ten all time artist all time for me and my favorite female artist of all time so this is probably still a 5 star. Pretty radical departure for her and some of the most unique and interesting use of rhythm really just concentrating and taking to max potential some of the ideas she was playing around with on idler wheel. I'm wondering if this album will be remembered as a Covid album because it very much is and I can still hear it, but not sure it will be closely tied to Covid as it ages.
I get it now she's VERY cool. Everything I've heard about Fiona Apple was just confirmed. The album is pure rage, it's something you can hear in slam poetry, something every girl carries along all her life, something hurtful and beautiful in its honesty. Fiona Apple is very unique and amazingly accurate when it comes to metaphors and emotions. Aside from the lyrics, the music was so thoughtful and interesting in it's diversity and experimentation! The percussion was creative, the usage of sounds and her own voice as an instrument was very smart.
When to listen: when men suck and I want to just shake it all out. I loved this album when it came out in 2020, gave it one listen through and never touched it again. It holds up!
A brilliant exploration of rhythm and emotion from one of the best voices in modern music. Simply breathtaking.
Love everything she’s done and would love to hear more.
Not an every day listen but one that I thoroughly enjoyed! Really raw. Shines light on a lot of things women experience without trying to sugar coat any of it.
11 (?) альбом в моем списке и ОГО я его слушала! + люблю. Лирика сильной женщины, музыка ебанутая, все очень круто. Обожаю
molto bello
I have never held this album in as high of regard as her other albums. But it really clicked for me this listen.
It's hard to explain why this is my favorite Fiona Apple album. For starters, I don't think she knows how to make a bad album. But this one stands apart from the rest of her catalogue for its exciting and audacious experimentations. I love the manic piano and all the wild percussion across this record. But at the heart of it is really good song craft with melodies and lyrics that are genuinely catchy. It's just a lot of fun to listen to, and, as another reviewer put it, I hardly ever turn down a chance to listen to it when I scroll past it in my library
This is a perfect example of an album thriving off its simplicity. The very minimalist approach she takes to most of these songs makes it obvious how lyric focued it is. I love how many of the tracks are mostly or even entirely just vocals and percussion, making it a lot easier to really focus on what she's saying. And Jesus, these lyrics are fucking devastating man. She takes a real brutalist approach going into a lot of detail about her experiences with sexual abuse, which is felt both in the rage in her voice, and her deliberate choice of often very vulgar words. But that doesn't stop her from having fun, with some tracks still showing the much more witty side to Fiona's lyricism, but still every word she chooses fits in perfectly and there's always a real sense of poetry on each track. I really love how infrequently she releases music, with only 5 albums across a 30 year career, and every single one of them is pure gold. She really means it when she releases something into the world, and even much later in her career, this is arguably her best album.
I should’ve listened to this when it came out. Truly an original album with interesting instrumentations and melodies. And so far into her career!? This gave me a new appreciation for Fiona Apple. I need to go back through her discography. I think as a 90‘s baby, some of her stuff began to feel dated or of its time for me and I never gave it an honest listen with new ears, but this is maybe more of a me problem. Great album, no skips, no notes!
A modern classic. Smart songwriting, vitriolic and barely contained anger. Equal parts melodic and jarring
oh, fiona. you delightfully delightfully mad lady. as soon as that album art popped up, it's like she giggled like a goblin in my ear. fetch the bolt cutters is very human. it's rough, imperfect, full of all sorts of pots, pans, banging and snapping all over the place. there's no rules, nobody watching. fiona's music is not just meaningful, but it's also inspiring. it's like she's making music in a workshop in her own home, using anything and everything in her space to make noise and form meaning. an album that invites you to make a mess and get your hands dirty, that's what i think.
Okay so, I've actually heard this album once before. I had added it to my playlist, but failed to go back to it because of the song "For Her", it was...really intense and I felt bad skipping it but also didn't want to subject myself to it all that often so I just didn't. I know that might sound bad, but like idk. Sometimes I don't want to be reminded of how awful humans can be. The song itself is really good tho. Now, on re listen I want to hit play on the whole thing again. I honestly really liked it overall! I did the first time too tho lol. "I Want You To Want Me" is so so good! The line in under the table "I would beg to disagree but begging disagrees with me" is iconic. "Newspaper", "Heavy Balloon", and "Cosmonauts" were my other faves. This isn't my favorite Fiona Apple album, that would probably be "When The Pawn..." or "Extraordinary Machine". I'm not sure where I would rank this among the rest. I was gonna give this a 4, but since my favorites aren't on here I'm probably just gonna give this a 5 in their place. Pretends it's a 4.5
Mucha furia, muy contemporáneo
Gostei bue da primeira track, tem um piano bue fixe.
Was there a better year to release an album called Fetch the Bolt Cutters than 2020? It really resonated with me during lockdown, but it still sounds extraordinary when I don’t feel like I’m being held prisoner. (Although if I need to feel frustrated again, I could just remember that one of the highest-rated reviews for this album seems to suggest that a successful female artist in the 2020s couldn’t possibly still experience sexism before speculating that Fetch the Bolt Cutters only got rave reviews because male music critics fancied Fiona Apple in the 1990s.)
This is not my style of music, and I find some of the approach off-putting, but I can absolutely admire what Apple is going for, and I think she does it as well as anyone else on this album. No, I don't think it reinvents anything, really, but it is a mix of blues, r&b, acoustic rock, and baroque rock that she makes work across all the songs. I'm wavering between a 4 or 4.5, but I'm going to give it a 5 here, as this really is the peak of a "sub-genre" and better than so much else on this list.
Lei rimarrà probabilmente For Her, I Want You To Love Me (studietto e metro gialla)
П4К или нет, это олл киллер ноу филлер альбом с абсолютными бэнгерами. Лучшая песня - I Want You To Love Me.
i really liked this, haven’t heard anything like this, really liked how raw and dark it felt in areas and how mature it feels compared to her earlier works, very intense lyrics too, beautiful
Excellent, creative, feminist a bit weird.
9/10
If you’ve ever turned off the lights and stared at yourself in a mirror for long enough to see your own face grotesquely transformed, then you’ll understand it’s a sensation worthy of a whole literary genre. That’s pretty much what you get with gothic fiction, whose tropes – austere houses with the quirks eccentricities and secrets of a living, breathing character; doubles identical to the other but for one telling difference, either physical or in circumstance; psychological distress that contorts the familiar into alien … – are part of Fetch the Bolt Cutters thrilling furniture (literally: the percussion here is often a sofa, a bench top, a staircase). Like the best goth stuff, though, chiaroscuro is preferred to heavy cross-hatching. It’s occasionally agonising, sure, but it’s also funny (“kick me under the table all you want, I won’t shut up” is right up there for chorus lyrics), covetous (“Relay”), defiant (too many to mention), exposed (again too many, but “Cosmonauts” is my favourite) and everywhere absolutely fucking brilliant. Every choice, every idea, every element of the performance is right where it feels it should be. It’s a Frankenstein; not in the sense of it being a monstrosity – though a couple of monsters do cop a mention here and there (“For Her” is absolutely chilling) – but in terms of it being a Modern Prometheus. Yeah, that good.
This will be my next vinyl purchase ❤️ Im so happy this masterpiece ended up on this list The little imperfections that produced this perfection of an album ❤️ only fiona could include the barking of her dogs in the song
******
I would beg to disagree but begging disagrees with me.
WHAT AN OPENER. Banger after banger. I'm loving this album. It's so powerful and hard and catchy. But I don't know what mood I have to be in to listen to it, you know? It's like an art house film - I really loved my experience listening to it, but I'll likely never pick it up again.
She’s the best
Awesome as everything Fiona Apple ever did.
Wild and beautiful. You really feel like she caught fire when she conceived this album, but also that she perfectly marked the burn limits when she recorded it. Needs a few listens.
This seems to be a very personal album for Fiona Apple, and a pretty good one at that. A lot of really good song writing and great hooks. I don't normally like this kind of music, and didn't really connect much to her other albums that I have heard, but this one is very good. Low 5.
Agree with below
“ Can we talk about how the music video criminal gave us boners as kids? ” -MD Definitely unlocked some next level Pervy thoughts and it’s gotten worse from there. F/M/K Bjork, Fiona and Tori? Great fucking album
"I Want You To Love Me" - pozabila sem, da je tak čudn začetek. (In konec.) Razvije se v pa klavirski komad z močnimi vokali - pr njej res čutiš čustva v glasu, ko poje. And a lot of the time, she's fucking pissed off. Zato pa ne morš glih non stop poslušat tale album. Čeprav je odličen. "Shameika" je delightful. "Under The Table" tud. "Relay" tud. Pač cel album. Zanimiv je, dejansko neki drugačnega, velik vokalne igre, pasjeg laježa, random objektov uporabljenih za bobne, besedila so kul, komadi zapomljivi. "Newspaper" mi je amazing. Isto "Heavy Balloon". Pa "Cosmonauts". "For Her" misliš najprej da je neki drucga, ker ma hitre vokale, k zvenijo igrivo, sam probaš slediti besedilu in začneš počas dojemat, po te pa najbl zareže, o čem je zares. "Drumset" je kul, sam itak si še fucked od prejšnjega komada. In smo že pri "On I Go", zadnji komad. Chant-y, vokali sami ustvarjajo nek ritem. In suddenly je konec.
If you told me this morning that I’d end up listening to this 4-5 times today, I would have called you a liar to your face… and then I would have acted against my own self interest and non listened to it that many times even though I kinda wanted to. That’s just the kinda person I am, and maybe that contrarian impulse is exactly why this (objectively weird) pop album resonates with me. The autobiographical songwriting feels very akin to a Taylor Swift album but where Taylor can feel like musical theater, this feels more like open mic poetry reading. The lyrics are raw, personal, sometimes dark, and sometimes darkly funny. The instrumentation and song structures feel very improvised which I’d later find out is because they were. I spent at least two full listens debating what genre this actually was, and if I’d classify this as jazz. Apparently someone decided it’s just pop, so well just stick with that. I went into this cold, without the backstory or the circumstances of the recordings or anything. I still don’t know the stories behind most of the lyrics, but I now understand that this was recorded at Fiona’s house over a period of about 5 years with a few collaborators and edited entirely with GarageBand.
How'd I forget to rate this? Love everything about this new to me album, starting with my new favorite title.
Favorite Track: Shameika
Fiona Apple just got better and better as a musician and songwriter over the years. Fantastic stuff!
Someone cooked here
I cant have a totally objective look at this cause it was THE pandemic album for me. It came out at the perfect time. And it hit so good. I must have listened to it like 50 to 100 times. What an incredible record though. Its so small in the production and instrumentation but the voice of this record is so big and loud. Its just a perfect mix. Everything hits so hard. The music itself comprised of mostly just drums and bass and some guitar, piano is great. All killer no filler. The stand up version of bass is so sick. I just love it all of it. Its really amazing and everyone should give any of Fionas music a listen its all great. Though this might be my own personal favorite
This is so good?? 5
9/16/25. I love Fiona Apple's music, powerful lyrics and always enjoy the choices she makes with her arrangements and instrumentation. I always hope for a sixth album, but the five she's released are all great.
Inject this shit straight into my veins Best Song: I Want You to Love Me Rating: 9/10 Stars: 5
I just love this album. Dreamy, angry, and hopeful all at the same time. During COVID, this was a lovely soundtrack.
What a wild ride. Experimental, whimsical, funny, and then you actually listen to the lyrics and it's about freeing yourself from the crushing yoke of oppression and dealing with the trauma of sexual abuse. And yet it doesn't feel bleak at all, but... well, like the music itself? Good stuff that lends itself to a relisten on various levels.
One the greatest things to ever happen to music.
I see Fiona, I rate 5
Feels like visual art as music.
Love
As far as I’m concerned, this is THE pandemic album. I remember listening to it for the first time: I had just graduated college and was having a terrible time trying to find gainful employment (for obvious reasons). I was laying in their backyard, sprawled over some old blanket in the sun where my childhood swing set used to be. I think I listened to this every day for the rest of that brutal summer. It kept me company. Honest, rowdy, singular, and sometimes strange. Captures a huge scope of emotion: longing (“I Want You To Love Me”) resilience (“Fetch the Bolt Cutters”), frustration (“Under the Table”), gut-wrenching pain (“For Her”), self-assurance (“Shameika”), depression (“Heavy Balloon”), even some good old-fashioned annoyance at lame dudes (“Rack of His”). It’s her finest work and she released it exactly when we needed it. Thanks Fiona.
There’s something that feels especially feral and raw about the Fiona record. Gone is that cutesy at times sound of her early records and here is a powerful singer with no fucks left to give.
Easily one of the rawest albums on this list. Fiona lays a lot bare here emotionally, and her vocal style is just great. An album that well deserves a lot of the praise it receives.
I remember this album coming out early-pandemic and it being quite a big deal. Still remember, the first time I spun it, I was mid-digging up a patch of yard to put in a playground for my son. Enjoyed it at the time, but have not come back to it since. On opener I Want You To Love Me Apple feels particularly exposed. Her voice is mixed roughly atop a sparse piano arrangement; not trying to hide any blemishes or otherwise imperfections. Shameika keeps the piano going, but in a more upbeat swing -- early album standout. The title track is beautiful. Love the lumbering bass and homebrewed sound of the percussion that sounds like it was made using kitchen cutlery. Dogs barking through the outro had my own dog on edge. Under The Table is equally wonderful. A low-key empowerment anthem about not remaining silent and just playing a supporting role. Newspaper is a cool one at the center on which she commiserates with the way one of her exs is treating a new woman. Very moody with beautiful production -- love the layered vocals. Really enjoy the soulful delivery of Heavy Balloon. This is one of those albums that feels reallly realllly good front to back. The production is beautiful and crisp, which only emphasizes the often minimalistic arrangements. Love the way that Apple's voice was treated here -- her voice is lovely, but can have a rough edge that only serves to bolden her often emotional deliveries. I fall somewhere in the realm of a high 4 / low 5. Going the latter, because taken as a whole this album is a real treat.
I love Fiona and this album! One of her best!
Absolutely agree. This is a powerhouse album, raw and honest and sparely (the hardest way) tuneful. Confessional, warning, empowering, educating. Man, listen!
When this was released it was a grower on me but now I love it. A modern classic. Powerful and beautiful.
Holy shit. Where has this one been? I’m a Fiona fanboy but never listened to this. 2020 was a weird time. A new level of pissed off beauty. Crazy unconventional song structures and instrumentation along with her signature straight to the soul lyrics and wild vocal range. If you’re not a fan already it might be tough to start here. Full on display of Fiona’s trauma and neuroses set to strange music, but this is rapidly climbing into my favorite records after a few listens. Damn.
5/5. I think my feeling about this album would have been much different if I got this album early on in this 1001 album experience. I would say "Where is the signing? Why does it sound bad? What is even the point?" Listening to other genre bending albums has allowed me to better appreciate albums that don't fall into a specific category. In some songs, she is essentially rapping or using spoken word, and with all of the random instruments, she is dedicated to making sure she gets her message across while keeping it raw and authentic. She curses and is direct, something that people uncomfortable with a confident woman will not like, and she clearly doesn't care. This album is not for them, it is for her and for those who feel afraid to speak out or be themselves. Fiona has always been pretty sure of her artistry but here it comes through in minimalist rage. This is a great album and I am glad I was able to give it another chance. Best Song: Shameika, Ladies, Newspaper, For Her
I suppose it’s a a testament to my departure from current musical trends that I didn’t even know this album existed. I remember when Apple first appeared on the scene. I was an instant fan of her voice and “wise beyond her years” lyrics. I only recently busted out her first two albums again. Since I’d not heard anything new for a while, I assumed she hadn’t produced much of merit in that time, and as such did not expect a lot from this album. I was wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Apple’s delivery is exceptional as ever, smokey and emotional when called for, pointed where needed. Instrumentation is also intriguing. She’d always seemed an adequate pianist, but whatever is going on with percussion is also interestingly unique. Not exactly straight forward drum kit. Now I’ll have to go back and find what else she’s done since that second album.
Really liked this.
Really great album which has a wide range of styles, songs, nice lyrics and melodies.
Had no idea this came out but I’m better off because it did.
Holy shit the percussion alone is worthy of 5 stars
Easy 5
Interesting
This album is insane. It’s a work of art. It’s unabashed in its intensity, its craftsmanship, and its explosiveness. Funny, wry, sardonic: everything about this album is deliberate. Fiona redefined herself on this as a singular artist of her time. Damn near perfect.
I have weirdly fond memories of the early days of Covid. Obviously it was devastating for millions of people who lost loved ones, lost work, or suffered with their mental health. But despite this, there was some calm that came with lockdown. It forced a lot of us to slow down. Stay at home, work on your garden, start some projects, get some exercise, go on long walks, etc. And listen to "Fetch the Bolt Cutters". This album came out at the perfect time, unintentionally. With themes of domestic scenes, self reflection, politics, and escape, it became the soundtrack to many people's lockdown. The experimental nature in some ways reflect the attitude of the time when many people thought "Maybe I'll learn to bake sourdough". The heavy and odd percussion throughout the album was built around found objects in Fiona Apple's home. The songs are poppy but subverted. Calm with a deep sense of unease. If you didn't hear it at the time, it might not resonate completely but in those times, it was the perfect album.
I'm not really familiar with Fiona Apple as I always assumed she would be outside my music taste. However, this album blew me away - raw, honest, creative, different, and clever and it completely captured my attention. Rating: 5
I hadn’t listened to Fetch The Bolt Cutters for about a year, so this was a pleasant reminder of just how great of a pop album it really is! During the first track, I thought to myself “oh yeah, this is that great catchy song”. Then the same happened at the second track, the third, and so on. There is no miss on this, and the combination of bedroom lo-fi quirkiness and almost industrial percussion work brilliantly. Come for Fiona Apple's thoughtful and humorous lyrics, stay for the sound of barking dogs and earworms.
If INSIDE is THE comedy piece to incapsulate the pandemic, Fetch The Bolt Cutters could very well be the album equivalent of that (even though its timely release was more of a coincidence).
This was brilliant. Pretty arty, a bit mad, weird percussion on a lot of it. The lyrics felt almost like she hadn't finished them there is a lot of repetition, but it works. Glad I've found this album. I'll be listening to it more.
they should be teaching this album in schools it needs to be required listening
I found the album's construction fascinating, but importantly Fi hasn't lost her skill for writing melody - which makes this experimental and accessible at the same time. And what's more it grows with every listen. Her vocal is tender or gritty as required. Her backing harmonies are expressive, choral and add a whole other layer to already wonderful melodies (check the 'Cosmonauts' backing). I found this album quite the revelation - the true successor in the Kate Bush lineage, whom she references on the title track. There are shoots of melody sprouting everywhere - some fully blossom, some remain little buds. It's multi-layered; it has interesting touches and inventiveness all over. Not many have the skill to build an album as enthralling. It's fascinating. And it's indescribably good.
+ i want you to love me, fetch the bolt cutters, newspaper, heavy balloon, cosmonauts
10/10 One of the best albums of the last few years. I remember listening to this when it came out and it being my first foray into this style of music. Really opened a lot of music for me. Big fan. Favorite Song: Fetch the Bolt Cutters
Fiona Apple's 'Fetch the Bolt Cutters' is a visceral, unflinching masterpiece. It's a unique percussive landscape from found sounds where raw emotion bleeds through every track, from the percussive slams of mattresses to the unedited, dripping anger in her vocals. The album's power lies in its fearless confrontation of trauma and the yearning for liberation. Apple's lyrics, as exemplified by the stark 'Good morning, good morning/ You raped me in the same bed your daughter was born in,' cut to the bone, making this an essential and deeply affecting listen
Loved it
Fiona nema lošeg albuma, ali nažalost nema ni puno albuma
Such a unique album
Just love for Fiona
Very nice discovery, fresh vibes, I quite enjoyed it! 9/10
Absolute banger of an album.
Amazing album. Just reading the lyrics is enough to fall in love, but on top of that we have great singing voice, original use of drums and instruments, and overall great package. I have listened to the album twice now, it has couple of less interesting songs, but the level of quality is still really high. The highlight of the album - definitely Relay. Great poetic work, simply but moving melody and emotional vocal. It's now one of my favourite songs that I've discovered through this website. For sure it deserves 5 stars and an asterisk, meaning it's more like 5 and a half. Looking for a vinyl straight away!
A full-out masterpiece. There's a great New Yorker profile about the unfiltered creation of this album. The best moment of the title track, where Apple shifts up — "I thought being blacklisted would be grist for the mill" — is improvised, she says. From the profile: "She knew that it was good, because it was embarrassing." There's a lot of deconstruction here, both musically and personally. There's an outright repudiation of the image of the young (female) artist as muse, a box she had been placed into with her relationship with Paul Thomas Anderson. The making-of Magnolia doc is revealing; that movie is a singular achievement, too, but it cuts through Anderson's brilliance to see him, the same age I am now, coked-up, conceiving of himself as a great artist, his proximity to Apple seemingly a show of status and sway. "You're working out your psychoses on everyone else's": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVt2oYUu5jQ Endlessly catchy and inventive. Hard to pick favourites: the aforementioned title track, Drumset, Cosmonauts, Newspaper, Heavy Balloon, and especially I Want You to Love Me, which has, I think, the thesis statement, on wanting what one wants: "I know none of this will matter in the long run, but I know a sound is still a sound around no one." Alongside Phoebe Bridgers' Punisher, released a couple months later, I think this is the decade-defining album to date.
Now THIS is a must hear album. Fiona dropping this album during lockdown wound up being a major highlight of 2020. It's a perfect album to get lost inside of, and grows more rewarding with repeat listens. You can tell having the freedom to complete the album in her own way yielded benefits across the board. Every song feels personal, fueled by her emotions, driven by her piano and the percussion. It's easily her best album since When the Pawn... Just don't ask me to figure out the actual rankings between the two and Tidal. Hopefully we don't have another long wait between albums, but if we do, well, at this point I completely trust it'll be worth waiting however long it takes.
It's spectacular. Incredible lyricism and storytelling, vibrant instrumentals and the perfect combination of accessibility and experimentation. If I was to pick favourites I'd go for I want you to love me, relay and cosmonauts, but that's only after the first time of listening. Next time I would be listing probably 10 of the tracks here. At least. Thoroughly deserved 5 stars.
This makes me miss Covid
I love you Ms. Pots & Pans, a deeply heartfelt and truly original work
Fiona is a mystery. And this record is simply great. Totally different. Excellent songwriting, top notch performance, so man small details.
Some albums just have the sauce. The first couple of bars if Rack of His have the sauce. Eerie, intoxicating, and fully unique sounding, it's just one song of many on this album that are really special. I Want Ypu to Love Me, Shameika, Csomonauts, and For Her are great. Fiona definitely has a singing style that persists throughout this album that teeters between fast talking and singing. I know this is her newest album, but very intersted in more of her discography after this.
This album rules, can't believe I've never heard it before. Bangers all the way through. It reminds of Regina Specter with fangs (in a good way) When I listen to it I picture a badass woman walking in slow motion through the streets of New York while stuff is abstractly blowing up around them. I like the classical or baroque-y vibes underneath a punk-like march liberally topped with vocals like pop rocks.
Flawless front to back. It feels like the brand of angst and kindness I try to embody. Put it on my tombstone.
Bewilderingly good songwriting. I think Dana and I listened to this in it’s entirety 400 times in March/April 2020.
Definitivt corona æra album. Elsker hendes vokal
RYTME! Sindssygt fed percussion, vokaler, tekster, alle sangene er bangers. mesterværk.
What a delight. I love her creativity.
10/10
Very powerful! An absolute revelation!
Sonically brilliant, very good songwriting, excellent themes. This was an instant classic when it dropped but I will be curious to see how it holds up in a couple decades. I already feel like "Idler Wheel" has a more timeless sound and will be looked at as better in my mind. Time will tell.
Love this album. Good from the first track onwards. "I Want You to Want Me" being one of the best crafted of them all. Enjoyed her different takes on life. Oh, and couldn't help noticing most of her songs included her reflections on ended relationships and bad boyfriends. Might have missed one, but I am thinking of: "Rack of His", "Newspaper", "Ladies", "For Her", and "Drumset".
Only album I have listened to so far that gets a full 5 star review. I was listening to Fiona’s Tidal album the night before, not realizing this was next in line for album of the day. (Favorite all-time song from Fiona is “Slow Like Honey” - never gets old for me). Was in the right place and in the right mood to enjoy her artistry. Tidal album is still my favorite. I enjoy her unique writing but am in love with how she uses the piano. Chef’s kiss.
On first listen I thought, yeah not bad. Second listen blew me away. Musically and lyrically its superb. Really like it
INCREDIBLE!!! Love this album. Masterpiece. Sounds unlike anything else. Strong sparse and nutty instrumentation.

ALSO THE PRECUSSION IS SO FUN!! raw, emotional, fun.
I love Fiona Apple but this didn't need to be here. It's a great record and came out during the early days of the pandemic but still... probably not required listening on this. Nonetheless I personally love it.
Really Great! Tribal and energetic
really neat album. totally against the grain at times but completely listenable. fiona apple's songwriting is on a different plane from everyone else. very uniquely and singularly her. from front to back, i really enjoyed this one!
Obviously
Fiona goes in a very surprising Tom Waits-esque direction with all the pounding percussion and other strange sounds. Very pointed songwriting, with powerful imagery, intimate but surreal. Truly uncompromising record from a truly uncompromising artist. Key tracks: I Want You to Love Me Shameika Fetch the Bolt Cutters Rack of His Cosmonauts
Shameika Rack of His Newspaper Heavy Balloon For Her
I didn't immediately click with this album when I first listened but revisiting again after discovering the rest of her discography and falling in love this is now one of the most gripping singer songwriter albums I've ever heard
Great album
Everyone should listen to this at least once in their life
Loved this.
10/10. Great creativity and voice. Large majority of songs went to the playlist.
Meisterwerk
This was one of my top 5 favourite records of 2020. I havent listened to it in a few years but I think I love it even more. Experimental indie record where you don’t know what’s going to happen next. It’s pop, I think, but in the best possible way. And her lyrics are incredible. She can be brutal and direct at times, and strange at others. Her vocals / lyrics are the main draw for me, I cant think of too many vocalists that manage to be the main draw without detracting from the music which flows so well with this. It’s a perfect 5 for me.
Might be the most unexpectedly great album of the list so far. Is this the album that Fiona Apple is known for? It should be. Very eclectic in a way that would be terrible if the songs weren't so well done. Lots of time signature changes and lots of different melodies running over each other. Singing was really good too, reminded me of Hop Along, think this album must be very influential on a particular brand of indie. The gulf in quality between Tidal and this is huge. There was a song or two that didn't land but that might just be a first listen thing. 4.5.
I don't usually like experimental stuff, but this was great. 4.5/5
gonna save it. expected to like it because people with similar taste to me liked it. want to listen to the lyrics carefully
Pushing the envelope with this one. Really enjoy it.
Singer-songwriter, art pop, progressive pop. Stunningly percussive, dense and hard to chew. It's a hard album to listen to for all the right reasons. I struggle to describe it. 5/5
I would beg to disagree, but begging disagrees with me I told you I didn't want to go to this dinner You know I don't go for those ones that you bother about So when they say something that makes me start to simmer That fancy wine won't put this fire out, oh Kick me under the table all you want I won't shut up Fuck yeah, this is a great album. 5/5
Having been on this site for over a year, here's a handy tip: any reviews where the reviewer compares a woman artist ONLY to other artists who are women can safely be filed away under M for Misogyny (and completely ignored).
First listen Saved 12/13 Top track: I Want You To Love Me
Amazing album. Love the title, love the album cover and love the music. Seems like an art/experimental album & I love that. Great percussion which I was not expecting. A great listen!
One of the most unique albums I've ever heard
Love this album. Reminds me of riding around during early Covid. So many great songs. Love the recording style.
This was, by far, one of the most interesting and well done albums that I've listened to yet as part of the 1001 albums project. That being said, there were some times that I felt annoyed by it. By this, I mean certain songs were annoying to me, but they were few, and the songs that really hit, hit hard.
Purposeful chaos. Loved it during covid, love it now.
Creative and really differing songs in a rhythmic way
ocd queen
Love it. I was very unsure first, but as long as i have been listening it got to me.
I wish I knew what, exactly, it is that makes this record perfect to me. That doesn't really matter though. It is here when I need it and gives me the opportunity to disconnect and live in Fiona Apple-ton for a period of time, and that is a very valuable trait.
Regina Spektor, Kimbra, Melanie, Fiona Apple: Freestyle rapping with analog vocode Every time she switches up the time signature, she sounds insane on this album and I loved it. She's pissed off. Every track was so unique in composition. I was taken in each time and felt something different every 2 minutes. She was seeing something when she recorded all this.
Best Song: Cosmonauts. I changed my mind about which song was the best several times while listening to this album, but I think the enunciation of "we'll be like a couple of cosmonauts" wins it for me. Worst Song: Can't find one. Overall: Really brilliant stuff. I can't remember an album on this list that is so successfully heterogeneous. There are so many unique forms that the tracks here manifest, with the main through-line being Fiona Apple's poetic, passionate vocals. I feel like her vocal phrasing is just incredible, with each enunciation feeling like the perfect way of saying something. I also love how a lot of the arrangements have this chaotic, kitchen-sink feeling. Every addition to a track felt like managed to feel like both a random addition - something that someone just decided to spontaneously insert through love of the music - but also that same seemingly random addition often felt like precisely what the needed, in retrospect. The result is an album that feels both expert and amateur, and the distance between the listener and the music feels as thin as possible.
I love this album. It's honest, sincere, emotionally intelligent, fun to listen to, stands up to repeat listens, and made with genuine passion.
Damn, loved this. Her voice is so unique. I love the emotion coming through in all songs. I love the lyrical creativity. Big fan of this :)
Grit, creativity, masterful performance, perfection.
In Fetch the Bold Cutters, Fiona Apple is experimenting with rhythms, and a collection of experimental percussion instruments. Apple's music is still centered around the piano and her clear, articulate vocals, like her earlier albums. This collection of songs is more experimental, and of a surprising range. By the end of the album, it isn't clear what genre to place Apple's music in.
The instrumentation, vocals, songwriting, everything, it’s all so innovative. I listened to this 3 or 4 times just because, but it’s clearly a modern day masterpiece.
When this initially came out, everyone from Pitchfork critics to parking garage attendants praised it as a perfectly-timed pandemic-addled exploration of isolation. And at the time, I didn't get it. I generally loved Fiona up to this point, but something about Fetch the Bolt Cutters felt distinctly too self-aware, too deconstructed, too heady. And this is why we sit with records for a few years! Revisiting this was a treat, and made me [finally] realize how amazing it is. I think the original context of the pandemic hurt my initial understanding, actually. Fetch the Bolt Cutters isn't isolationist; it’s begging for community, specifically community from women, which is important because it does so in a culture that wants women to isolate from each other. The percussiveness also works a lot better now after several listens and a bit of time; sure, maybe it's because I'm not stuck in the house banging my head against the wall, both literally and figuratively, but I take it less as a primal scream of anger, and more as a primal scream of femininity, akin to a seance. More importantly, now that I've had time to sit with my initial reaction, I'm able to listen to this and actually pick up the hooks, pick up on the off-kilter grooves, pick up on Apple's inherent pop sensibilities that are still there, just deconstructed like a burger at a 2-star Michelin restaurant. And like that burger, no matter how strange it may have felt to eat it, your taste buds will dwell on it for the next week. Literally, I’ve been humming the hooks to a lot of these songs the last few days, which is cool because they are not “normal” hooks by any means. This doesn't mean this album isn't obtuse – it very much is. It's coded-language, it's a college-level thesis paper, it's difficult and not something you'll get on spin 1, and maybe not even something you'll get on spin 50. I see why this may not be everyone's jam. This is the kind of record that shows the vital flaw of this project, because one day to process an album is not possible for something this dense. But thankfully, this isn’t my first rodeo with Fetch the Bolt Cutters, and this go around, it finally clicked. I'm still unsure if I would listen to this album in pieces/pull out specific tracks, or even play this frequently, because it is a very, very dense and intense full listen, but you don't need to revisit something constantly to know that it's masterful and great for certain situations. And while I’m still going to say When the Pawn... is my preferred Fiona Apple record, I’m deeply, freshly in love with Fetch the Bolt Cutters, and I think I'm finally comfortable saying that she may have a completely flawless discography. So deserving of that Perfect 10 from Pitchfork, and I’m happy to finally be on board.
I remember listening to this album Dec 2020. I had never heard of her before, but kept seeing the album everywhere. That first experience was unlike anything I’d ever imagined. From the lyrics, to the production, to the melodies, it made for a perfect album for me. This album is the reason I went back in her discography. Now, almost 4 years later, I’m a massive Fiona Apple fan.
Love this album. She has evolved so much as an artist since her first album and only seems to be getting better. It’s a weird, painful, honest album and I don’t think she’s sounded better.
Yeah, this is pure brilliance. Not always easy to listen to, due to some intense subject matter. But pay attention because this hits hard, both musically and emotionally.
Already a favorite. I never listened to Fiona when I was a teen and was floored when I heard this. Highly recommend to everyone!
Intense, silly, explosive. Wow!!!
That was great fun. Probably going to add it to my collection so I can listen to it again later
I had the 'Tidal' album back in the day, so I had a feeling I would enjoy this. 5/5
Always love Fiona Apple's work!
I'm very critical of 2020s albums, and this review is being written in 2024 so we're not even half way through the decade, but I consider this to be a candidate for the strongest album released in the 2020s. It's powerful with a smooth lush production and powerful voice that can be ethereal, confessional, and hardcore when needed. The songs are beautifully crafted with unforgettable hooks, with background instrumentation based on rock, jazz, and chillwave. Powerful start with a string of pop hits, and the ones that follow balance between the avant-garde while still being enjoyable to listen to. There's chaos and disorder, but it never makes the listener too uncomfortable. Despite all the craziness and raw noises, it still sounds structured and confident in what it is. Songs such as "Rack of His" remind me of her 1996 debut Tidal. She's consistent, never straying from the mood and sound of the album, while still experimenting a lot, and all of her ideas work. Only suggestion is it should have cut at "For Her." The last 2 songs were cool but they're a tad bit weak compared to the other tracks, and it was an awkward ending.
Brilliant album, great to find it on here. Shout out to Shameika for being early on this.
Semi improvisational with all kinds of interesting instrument and percussion songs. Her spoken word experimental jazz is one of the most interesting things I've heard this year.
Nobody skewers a phony like Fiona Apple. Like this line on "Under the Table": "I'd like to buy you a pair of pillow-soled hiking boots To help you with your climb Or rather, to help the bodies that you step over along your route So they won't hurt like mine" I think that's my favorite song on this album. I love the "Kick me under the table all you want, I won't shut up" chorus. And the way "I would beg to disagree but begging disagrees with me" overlaps with the chorus. A lot of backing vocals on the album add drama and little countermelodies like that. (“Newspaper” has some interesting backing vocals too.) The drums on this album sound like you’re in the middle of some elaborate grandfather clock, surrounded by the click-clack of gears moving in different directions. “Heavy Balloon” is stunning. This verse struck me as a beautiful and heart-breaking way to describe depression: "People like us get so heavy and so lost sometimes So lost and so heavy that the bottom is the only place we can find You get dragged down, down to the same spot enough times in a row The bottom begins to feel like the only safe place that you know" A lot of these songs switch up halfway through and introduce a new idea or beat or melody. The beat switch on “For Her” at 1:08 is insane. It sounds like “Hey Mickey,” briefly giving the song an upbeat feel before switching again for the line: "Good morning / You raped me in the same bed your daughter was born in." Whew. This is a ferocious album. Really great.
Infinitely interesting, intriguing, and satisfying to listen to. Fiona Apple never shows up without a ton of incredible ideas and musical moments. There are many incredible tracks on this album "Fetch The Bolt Cutters" "Under The Table" "Shameika" "I Want You To Love Me" These first 4 are notably fantastic. My favorite part of Fiona Apple's music is her lyrics (even though her music is so good that this could probably also be a 5 star rating if it was only instrumental). I find her so good at having this scathing badass demeanor that comes across with really great imagery. "Kick me under the table all you want, I won't shut up." COME ON! That's so good. Some songwriters will write a song by starting with lyrics, and take a harmony and make a melody from those lyrics. The lyrics will sometimes change to fit an interesting rhythm or to match a rhyming scheme. Sometimes when I've done that, I've felt kind of bad for changing what my gut originally wanted. Or my heart or my brain- wherever it came from. But I'm an iterative person so I don't usually mind it. But Fiona Apple I feel like never makes these concessions. I could be wrong, but it feels like the lyrics are always there and never change for the sake of the music, and I find that very cool and fascinating. When I read her lyrics I don't see these concessions being made. If she needs an extra beat or to remove one for the sake of the lyrics, then fine! She does it! It's interesting. I like it. Easy 5/5!
Incredible
I didn't really know Fiona Apple except in passing before this album came out but I really love it, it's so good. And great to have so much of her stuff to be able to go back and explore.
Inventive. Fun. Oozing with style and bravado. Really liked this one.
Fiona Apple gives the cabin fever and uncertainty of the early COVID lockdown a soundtrack. It’s loopy, it’s rough around the edges, it’s undeniably her.
A masterclass in songwriting. God damn.
A document from an artist coping with a global phenomenon. A letter from the edge. Fetch the bolt-cutters, indeed.
"Fetch the Bolt Cutters" is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Fiona Apple. Art pop and bedroom pop. Bedroom pop is a new one. I'd say experimental as well. The album was largely recorded in Fiona's Venice Beach house from 2015 to 2020. The songs are long, often improvised with unconventional percussion sounds. Those percussion sounds were often created with non-music objects and contrast against traditional melodies. The songs' themes stress freedom against oppression but there is humor added in a number of songs. Commercially, the album hit #4 in the US, #33 in the UK and won two Grammy's. It had wide-spread critical acclaim and is largely considered her best album. Bass and handclaps begin "I Want You to Love Me." Piano carries the melody. Fiona's vocals are authoritative and confident as she describes her relationship with her (former) boyfriend Jonathan Ames. The vocals and music end chaotically. "Shemeika" is faster paced. A rolling piano and heavy percussion. Her friend, Shemeika, asks her why she's trying to hang with the popular crowd. "Shemeika said I had potential." Fiona starts the humorous "Under the Table" singing a capella. An organ and various random percussion noises. It's about an outrageous dinner party. Somehow, Fiona creates a catchy chorus by just repeatedly singing "If you kick me under the table I won't shut up." Heavy and various percussion noises and bass dominate "Heavy Balloon." It's about depression and wouldn't sound out of place on Peter Gabriel's fourth album ("Security"). A similar heavy percussion start "Cosmonauts" but guitar and an organ are eventually added. Haunting backing vocals. A long-term relationship is compared to being like cosmonauts. This sounds like a weird ride and one I probably wouldn't want to take. I have to admit I had a hard time connecting with this when it came out. But, today, I really connected to it. I appreciated the little details in each song and there are plenty as there's lots going on. Yes, it is heavy percussion but Fiona's voice and piano drive a good portion of the songs. She creates a lot vocal and musical "catchiness" (for lack of a better word) in each song. And that's surprising given all the supposed improvisation. I don't know if I'd recommend this for everyone (there is a lot of experimentation) but for those who want a unique experience this is a good one.
Loved it. Weird, and wonderful
One of the best and weirdest albums of 2020.
My #2 album the year it came out. Great record.
I fucking love this album, the instrumentals, her messages of woman’s power their progression in human history, her themes of love and heartbreak, her inspiration for her music, there’s so much personality in this project, and she hates oppressive men which is honestly so fucking real, all the chord progressions, beats, and piano, fav tracks are shameika, relay, i want you to love me, i was vibing the entire time, it just inspires me itself and makes me want to jam forever and ever, and her singing is just wow, she has so much range and creativity it’s amazing and i love the jazz inspirations, my fav soul-rnb album behind curtis mayfield
a combination of engrossing, forceful and endlessly inventive percussion, beautiful and heart wrenching lyricism, and a gorgeous, insanely expressive vocal performance. it didn't hit me quite right on my first listen when it came out, but from then on it's just grown on me more and more; on every listen it just opens up more and more.
Forgot a few of these songs and how much I like them
Cunt
If you imagine one of the really great Tom Waits albums, say, Swordfishtrombones, but a female singer, and the focus is less on Lynchian dwarves and hobos, and more on the intimate moments of daily life that feel just as big, then you'll have a vague sense of how brilliant this album is. I did not realise Fiona Apple was like this, and now regret not having sat down with one of her albums sooner. I will be buying this, and soon.
LP
Uau, impressionante. Corajoso, cheio de energia e personalidade
consider this an apology for rating her debut only a 4.
musically so GOOD and her voice has such a bold rasp. i'm in love. sort of regina spektor-ish in the honky tonk piano and the jarring cooing
I've always liked Fiona Apple but not heard a full album - glad to have changed that here, it's phenomenal.
Best kind of pop
I remember trying to get into this album when it came out due to so many positive reviews from every website/critic but I just couldn't properly appreciate it. On this listen I think I've wrapped by head around the clangy production, and where the album really is interesting is the song topics that Fiona chooses. In addition her vocal delivery on each song is so quirky and unpredictable it keeps it fresh the whole way through. 9/10
This album is amazing, a genuine accomplishment. For Her is a particular triumph. Wow. I'm blown away.
An album like no other. This really helped me through a tough part of my life. I'm thankful for that. I totally called it as the album of the year in 2020. Super happy to revisit this after a fairly long stint since my last time.
A shining star from one of the great musicians of all time
For some reason I was really pulled in by this album and can’t wait to listen to it again. Raw but polished, honest but kind. Such a genre spanning sound, I will even recommend this to my husband and we don’t like the same music at all.
love this album
Wow. I LOVE this album!! As a Fiona fan in my teens, I was pretty excited to see this pop up, and didn’t even know it existed. Her voice is so original and the way she uses words, breaking them down to the tempo, with lots of repeating, is totally entrancing. I’m pretty sure the wiki on this album is also the best I’ve ever read-super random, fun facts, like the credits to her dogs barking on a track, the fact the the whole album was recorded through the GarageBand App, to the details of her Grammy nomination (and how she snubbed it) actually makes the album that much more interesting! I even love her album cover and how she saved the pic for years to use on a cover one day. Fiona Apple is a goddess!!! Listen again: definitely Purchase for my collection: yes Favourite Song: For Her
This is a fantastic album, but it's surprising to see something so recent on a list like this. I've listened to it several times since it came out, but still feel like I'm digesting it! Fiona Apple must be one of the most consistently great singer/songwriters working today.
I love her endlessly. this is such a good album
Incredible
One of the stand out albums of the last couple of years, definitely deserves its place on the list. Is it a masterpiece only time will tell, but for now it feels harsh not to give this the full 5 stars.
Fiona Apple makes good records. This is one is endlessly unique -- challenging and catchy at the same time.
A really interesting album. Love the live percussion, love the understated passion. My lockdown album of choice.
This album was likely the best of 2020. Recorded mostly at Fiona Apple’s home in Los Angeles, it has a raw organic quality to it. The use of found sounds lends an almost dada like ramshackle foundation from which the music can find its basis. This produces a set of sounds that seem to appear spontaneously without the trappings of a studio production.
I was blown away but this album. Very original songs and such a raw vocal performance
I Want You To Love Me- Could’ve done without the last part, but other than that pretty catchy 👍 Shameika- Funny how small moments can become defining moments in your life..👍 Fetch the bolt cutters- this is a bit too on the nose for me and isnt that sonically interesting. nice doggos tho Under the table- wish I could speak out a bit more 👍 Relay- I like this song a lot, but not really sure about the repeated line, i feel like it doesn’t mean much really Rack of his- I think the metaphor is really clever here, enjoyed this song overall 👍 Newspaper- I like the harmonies, but again a bit literal for me again and not a strong melody Ladies- A more chill song following the last one, a little meandering for me and i would say slightly condescending Heavy Balloon- So good, i love the vocals on this one 👍 Cosmonauts- One of the instantly catchier tracks 👍 For Her- Bit too chaotic for me Drumset- Quite repetitive, feels like a bit of throwaway On I Go- very percussion heavy, pretty good ending to the album 👍 I heard about the acclaim for this album back when it was released but never checked it out. It feels very 2020, but still holds up and I really appreciate it 5/5
Oh, the absolute masterpeice! The first album we've tested on our B&W stereosystem. So many sounds in perfectly organized harmony! Fiona scares me with her talent
Fiona Apple has been angry all her life — and why shouldn’t she? as a woman whose mind and body have been exploited in an industry that’s constructed a wild game without informing her of the rules — but never has her anger sounded so assuredly stubborn and liberating as it does on her grand masterpiece, Fetch The Bolt Cutters. this is music unrestrained by the very constructs expected from music itself, and — in extension — from women. it is messy and wackily edited, and it is deliriously free. every word is a searing swiss blade; every surface is a percussive instrument Apple strikes right after her words do; and no subject is safe from her ruminations. in one fell swoop, Apple begs for love and affection (“I Want You to Love Me”), and then critiques an ex for sexually assaulting her (“For Her”). it is a brutal listen, one in which Apple sets the world around her ablaze — the sly, toxic men; the nasty high school bullies; the clout-chasing wannabes — and then holds out her hand for solidarity to the others who manage to survive the forest fire. on songs like “Newspaper” and “Ladies”, she seeks to protect the women who have been equally maltreated by men; she sings high praises to the one person in school who defended her on “Shameika”, while showing off the person she’s become in the face of mean girls. in its rawness, Fetch the Bolt Cutters truly soars. Apple had come far from the days of Tidal, where a girl and her piano made a way with her words. here, Apple spews those words with venom, and you can hear in her voice, the veins lifting on her temples and neck; you can hear the tears in her eyes and blood dripping down her nose. she flips the piano and stomps on it to make a beat. only Fiona Apple could’ve made this album, and goodness, what a phenomena it turned out to be.
omg loved!
This is the second Fiona Apple album that I've gotten on this list, and just like 'Tidal,' I really enjoyed this album as well. I had just gotten PJ Harvey's 'Rid of Me' on the previous day, and I felt like it was a beautiful coincidence to get 'Fetch the Bolt Cutters' immediately afterwards. I love that the lyrics had a theme of detachment to them, but each song still felt like it addressed that detachment in a different way. Fiona Apple's vocals are always so raw, yet she conveys so much emotion through her singing. I loved the instrumentation on this album was brilliant as well. I've heard "Criminal" so many times throughout my life, that I always think of Fiona Apple as a pianist, but she really breaks away from that here with all of the different percussion she was using. The three track run of "Newspaper," "Ladies," and "Heavy Balloon" might be one of my favorite trio of consecutive songs ever, and I really thought the last half of the album was incredibly strong.
Duh
The percussion and piano on this album are constantly interesting and make the album a 5/5 for me. Favorite Tracks: Under the Table, Shameika, Heavy Balloon.
OH MY GOD yesterday I decided to start listening to Fiona Apple because why not? I heard her album Extraordinary Machine which buh-lew my fucking mind after I heard it, I was telling my friend about how much I loved it and he said I should listen to her new album Fetch The Bolt Cutters this morning, I generated my new album and somehow I got this I probably have another 700 albums left on this thing and the fact I got this out of any possible album is just fucking crazy anyway, I really can’t put into words how amazing both of the albums I’ve heard from her are they’re just so amazing in literally every field of musicianship this album is too good to rate
Already my favourite album of the 2020s
It feels almost sacrilegious to rate something so new so highly, especially after refusing several classics of that honor. But the immediacy of this album warrants it. A stunning listen from the get-go, but an album that has also grown on repeated listens. Beautifully written and composed. I don't think I could tire of this one.
Kick me under the table all you want, I won't shut up about this album. It's sprawling, adventurous, playful, and expertly produced, with a domestic feeling that's miles away from the all-too-neat sounds of mainstream pop these days. It's experimental yet extremely catchy at the same time (See "Cosmonaut"'s chorus for one example of such "catchiness"). The lyrics are very "topical" most of the time but they're never on the nose, an asset that is mirrored in the performances themselves. Fiona Apple is a virtuoso on the piano and an incredible singer. But she also left many supposed "flaws" apparent during the recording process, along with off-kilter moments that make the whole thing sound sincere and very endearing. My only (minor) complaint is that the album is maybe *a little* too long. A more reasonable amount of self-editing, like taking out a couple of songs out of the record's tracklisting, would have created an even stronger *whole* overall (that's where Pitchfork's perfect 10 grade might be somewhat exaggerated imho). But as I've already suggested at the start of this paragraph, this is only a "minor" complaint. My own assessment can be summed up through a 4.5/5 grade here, rounded up to 5 for the usual purposes of this app. It's not often than a *recent* record in this list actually deserves all the praise. Shameika said Fiona had "potential", after all. Damn was she right about that! Number of albums left to review or just listen to: less than 700, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: approximately a half so far (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter
Scrolling through the reviews, people giving this 1 star seem to be mostly bell ends, or under this mad self-hate craze they've got running riot in the states. Or maybe they want all their music to have 'perfect' production with all the edges knocked off and unadventurous. Which is a valid choice for some. Sure it's not for you, nothing is for everyone, 1 star should be reserved for the truly bad, 2 stars for me when I just don't like something but can see why others would. That said I can understand why this album would be polarising. Newspaper, For Her, the title track. But if an album is polarising opinion, that can be a sign of something truly special. I remember the reaction when it came out, universal praise, Pitchfork's fabled full 100 score, that kind of thing and wondered if people were going overboard. I think they probably were, but just a little, this is a great album. I think I prefer the idler wheel, and I was never a fan of her 90s stuff, so I'm far happier when she's experimental. Regardless, I'm obviously going to add a star and give this a 5 just to undo one of those 1s that should be a 2. Faves - Fetch the Boltcutters, I Want You to Love Me, Rack of His, Cosmonauts
Only got halfway through the album would like to revisit later pretty good so far.I really like the modern sound. It’s folky but kinda catchy. The weird drums are really cool.I love her voice it’s so expressive and the lyrics are pretty heartfelt.
TE AMO FIONA APPLE
i love her sm
I love this record. I generally like her stuff, but this had a great edge to already great songs.
That was a clinic on neo-percussion. I loved the raw joy and pathos exemplified in most every track, flecked by subtle humour. There’s so much to listen to - I need to listen again and I’ve already listened 3x.
I was shocked by how good this album is. What incredible writing. I saw her open for Page/Plant at the Gorge in George, WA. I found her to be an extremely talented musician but was really taken with the songs themselves. Never really listened to her after that. But this! Wow. Amazing song writing, amazing musicianship, amazing poetry. I will go back and listen to her older stuff again.
Amazing stuff. Meant to listen to this when it hit and was getting widespread critical acclaim. This doesn’t sound like anything else. Has the charm of a homemade album (done in GarageBand) but has the precision and intent most studio albums can’t match.
Upea levy.
Perhaps THE lockdown art
5/5 ladies ladies
I could have never imagined to like somthing so recent this much
amei. ela sempre canta o que eu n tava esperando ouvir
Simply incredible
Oh man this was KICKASS! The lyrics are so emotionally vulnerable and heartfelt. Felt those words to my core. The title track will be my new mantra. I'm in love.
One of this decades early seminal pieces. Speaking of pieces Apple gives us slices of her throughout this. One to listen to in the early part of this decade.
FIONA YOU BEAUTY I LOVE YOU
I thought I had listened to all of Fiona's records. Apparently I hadn't. And I'm glad I was introduced to this one.
ooh
I absolutely see why this got so much hype a few years ago. It is hard to make something that is so artsy while also sounding genuine, but this album seems to have come from the heart more than the mind. The fun rhythms, stripped and raw production, great vocals, catchy melodies; it was all here for me, and I LOVE it. I already know this will be on regular rotation for me.
There are two directions musicians can go in the modern era: Experiment, or solidify tradition. Fiona manages to do both in this awesome album.
Very good. Jazz like in some sections, experimental in others. Fun listen.
I didn't know anything about this album. The beginning of the first track really drew me in and the album kept my attention until the end. Some awesome piano and intriguing melodies for my ears! Now, occasionally, including in the end of the first track, it all became too intense or dissonant for me. Fortunately, these moments were isolated enough to not completely distort my listening experience...but this won't be one to add to my music-to-work-by list.
Complicated, funny, intimate, weird. I love it.
I was surprised to find another Fiona Apple album appear on this list… and a very recent one that I’ve never heard of. I guess I’ve been a bit out of the loop lately as far as the latest acclaimed albums. This was a really interesting and fun album to listen to! It has a rough, arts and crafty feel that is reflected in the cover art, but is built and performed with a very high level of skill even if it is what seems like clanging and banging against a wall or the barking dogs. The lyrics are filled with clever observations and descriptions that I instantly fell in love with. This really seems like the perfect thing to emerge amidst the chaos of the pandemic. The jaunty feel of the album juxtaposes with its serious and at times seriously dark subjects. A genuinely quirky and unique album that I found to be very special!
OOOOOOOOOOOOH FUCK YES I adore this album so much, I would give it a 6 if I could, I just love the emotion and the energy of it. An absolute lifesaver during the first Covid lockdown, captured the frustration and weirdness down to a T, but also the excitement of new things coming!
Just brilliant chaotic energy and relentless bops. Will always remind me of lockdown
IF I COULD GIVE THIS ALBUM 1000 STARS I WOULD. This is one of my all time favourite albums. I do not need to be told to fetch the boltcutters for they are already a part of me. Every single song slaps so hard. She is truly an icon.
A masterpiece and easily one of the best albums of the last few years
This is probably one of my favorite releases from 2020. I wasn’t really super familiar with Fiona Apple before this, but wow this album is amazing. It’s aggressive, poppy, and sonically really diverse but also almost sounds “homegrown” low-fi. Really great stuff.
I really hated this at first, like almost disgusted. It got so much better. And hey, this was 2020, what a vibe.
++: I Want You to Love Me, Shameika, Rack of His, Ladies, Heavy Balloon, Drumset, On I Go +: Relay, Cosmonauts, For Her +-: Under the Table, Newspaper -: Fetch the Bolt Cutters 7,7/10
Not me mistakingly yelling at my dogs to stop barking at the end of the title track. Found this a really interesting listen, her vocals and melodies feel unique, the music itself is experimental in a fun way, going multiple directions within each track without feeling jarring or disjointed. I remember her being massive in the 90’s, so it’s cool that so long after her peak popularity she can bring out something so interesting.
In all fairness, I've never been a big Fiona fan and I have mixed feelings on this. After reading all the negative reviews of this album, I'm tempted to rate it a perfect 5 because wow--misogyny is alive and well. I'm going with a 4. It's interesting. It's difficult. At times it's not pleasing to the ear, but fuck it. I'm still not a Fiona fan, but she deserves all the praise in the world for being an individual in a world full of cookie cutters.
This was much wilder and raw than I expected. I enjoyed it and would probably listen to more of her music.
Very creative and emotional.
I wrote a nice review while listening but typically didn’t hit save so will sum it up: Heard once before in full, shame we didn’t get some of her earlier albums first Shameika is a strange bop Mad percussion choices, very unique Bit overrated by critics imo due to a combination of her earlier stuff being underrated, lyrical content and being a Covid era release
Fiona is weird and odd and I like it:;!
I already listened to it before. I really like the emotions that shone through this album. Wouldn't listen on repeat, but it's been very nice to rehear it today.
Well this was simply amazing! Apple always tempers the biting commentary of her songs with a playful style that no other female artist I can think of comes close to. In terms of male counterparts, think Randy Newman or Warren Zevon. Most of the time, you're having such a blast listening to the song that it takes awhile to realize just how sharp her skewer can be. Once in awhile, she gets a little too cute for my tastes, but that's honestly not all that often.
Like it, lots of big percussive sounds
Reminds me a lot of Adele's best
The good tracks are incredible, and the filler is passable at the very least.
I like this album a whole lot, but feel that one Fiona Apple record should be enough for this list. Between this one and "Tidal", "Fetch The Bolt Cutters" is the "better" album. "Tidal", however, is the one that belongs here. It has the more accessible hit songs and serves as a better intro to her music. This is a record you SHOULD listen to before you die. It's not a requirement, though.
Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: I Want You To Love Me, Shameika, Cosmonauts, (and more) This feels equal parts: unhinged, raw, spontaneous and beautiful. You've got dolphin sounds (orgasm!?) at the end of I Want You To Love Me, dogs barking during Fetch The Bolt Cutters. The barking adds a random layer of additional percussion, and which may or may not be on purpose. There's a ton of discordant, industrial sounds which remind me of both Nine Inch Nails and Tom Waits (Bone Machine). This is growing on me after almost four listens. One star per listen.
Regrettably, more Björk, and Chance the Rapper, than Janis Joplin, but still really quite brilliant since she sincerely has all three in her. I just wonder what it’d be like to hear her more purely than in an experimental tone. Not ersatz tho, just too heady at times, & I enjoy her more as an ambassador of soul qua the rawest soul than soul qua the voice of an oddball queen.
Nary a cooler woman exists like Fiona Apple I am LOVING the modern side of this generator! Whatever theatrical bullshit Fiona is selling I am buying it - think Florence + The Machine can get kookier and darker? Step this way. Music with BIG personality, which can be kinda marmite in terms of replay value, but damn it’s good while it lasts (unlike marmite) One of 2020’s best for sure, speaking of, this was an ideal distraction for I didn’t get to the Phoebe Bridgers Presale in time. Fuck. Side Note: ‘Cosmonauts’ into ‘For Her’ took my breath away jfc
Great, angry Fiona
Oh man, I remember trying to listen to this once while mowing the lawn back in 2020. It didn't stick. Shameika is awesome. I really liked the different percussion they used. I would definitely listen to this. Blaming my first listen on being overheated mowing the lawn.
Absolutely loved this. Gritty lyrics presented in an industrial-pop style percussion driven album that keeps you gripped and entertained. The switch from Newspaper to ladies was fantastic, it brough you up to a crescendo and then brought you right back down again. I much referred this to Tidal. Not as emotional, but a lot more grittier and raw. Full of notable songs, but i think Newspaper was my standout, which i felt had similarities to Tricky - Black Steel. 4.5 stars
Cool album. Enjoyed it Standout songs: Shameika Under the table For her
Nice
Oh, I like this! She ratchets between musical genres about three times per song, and it's all got Tom Waits-style percussion. Fascinating lyrics. One of the most unpredictable albums I can remember. 4/5 because I need to hear it more times to know whether it holds up well enough to get that last star. I bet it will though.
One of the more interesting albums I’ve listened to. Discordant and experimental, Fiona Apple conveys a message of being forgotten and an unwillingness to be ignored. I was impressed with the lyrics and styling (including some r&b elements along with folk and pop), this was a solid album start to finish.
This album is the soundtrack to our first Covid Lockdown in the UK and I played it a lot as I really like it. Having it appear on this list was a welcome surprise and I enjoyed hearing it again. I really need to listen to more Fiona Apple albums….
Starts real strong, gets a bit samey, but still good. 4 Heard before? Some Owned: No 74/296 (24%) Will I get: Maybe
A good solid album from start to finish. I didn’t know any newer songs by her so this was fun to listen to an I was impressed.
Once in a while this list throws up an artist I’m only vaguely familiar with and it proves to be a real win. I really enjoyed this. Eclectic, original, experimental. A fab album and even more surprising to discover she’s not in her 20’s which would normally be associated with a creative peak. I will defo explore more.
A long time since getting something so recent. I am an old. Bolt cutters song good. Yoko Ono dolphin end of the first track. Shades of Bjork. Under the table has a nice deep groove to it. The first listen I was an alien not understanding where this was coming from or going insta 2. Second listen I started getting it, found my favourites, found the groove. 3.5. Would listen to select tracks again, maybe need a breakup to listen to the whole.
FIONA!!! I LOOOVED this album when it came out and there are still so many things about it that are great. It is so obviously a self-made, locked in a cell (pandemic) album that it is both incredible and horrible to listen to in a lot of ways. As always some stellar lyrics and songwriting but there are some songs that havnt aged as well for me as others. I’ll go 7/10
The soundtrack to the COVID quarantine. Full of Fiona's razor sharp wit and sultry vocals. Favorite track: Ladies
Thoughts before listening: People make a huge deal of this album. I think it's pretty good, but 1 or 2 listens was good enough for me. Maybe this will be the time that wins me over. Review: This is a very interesting album. It's definitely a pop album, but Fiona Apple is not your typical pop artist. Never has been, even when she was putting out hits. I get the appeal here. It's an eclectic mix of sounds that keeps you engaged throughout cause you never really know what's coming next. Sometimes Fiona sings with a lot of soul and passion and others she's using a syncopated, almost rap style. I'm glad I had a chance to revisit this album. 4-stars for being different and unique.
not shy just don’t speak if i don’t have anything to say kinda album🤍
A new one for me, in fact I must admit I'd never heard of the artist. But really enjoyed it, a very interesting listen and will definitely be doing so again.
Such a good album. Eclectic. Personal, sometimes raw, sometimes humorous.
Excellent album. One I was vaguely aware of. Slightly off beat, strong feminine themes. Will listen again
Such a wonderful, different, and underrated album. She tries so many different things here, and 95% work.
Die hat so herrlich einen am Dach! Gutes Album, ich mag 2 andere von ihr aber noch etwas lieber.
