Reviews (page 5 of 7)

3.5 Well done and cohesive. Not my jam, but I can see it being someone else’s jam. Wishing well is a strong pop song, As yet untitled is beautiful

This guy wants to be Michael Jackson soooo bad. If Michael went down the road of R&B/Soul instead of pop. He’s got a great voice but it gets a bit tiresom hearing the same vocal progressions on pretty much every song. The instrumentals were kind of just there and didn’t really elevate his singing, not that it needed to be but left me wanting more from each song. Not my genre of music generally but I can appreciate the talent. 6/10

yea this guy can sing. its fine if RNB is what you want.

Again one of those albums, that really hit something when it came out, but now sounds dated, and a bit boring

Up until the last three tracks, I'd probably have believed you if you told me this was a mid tier 80s Phil Collins album. That last stretch though is pure fire. Sign Your Name and As Yet Untitled are both dark and eerie in different ways, then a lovely soul banger to see you home. It's a high three stars... Could have been a low 4

Not sure what I expected, but this was better than what I expected. More of an album, and not just some singles and filler.

Glad to be reminded this exists.

Best song by far was a Jackson 5 cover

Listened Before? No I've definitely heard Wishing Well before, but I cannot place it. Super catchy vocal delivery with an earworm of a backing instrumental. Had me nodding along NGL. Dance Little Sister is a dancefloor jam. Has harmonization that reminds of Huey Lewis and the News along with some funky bass and soulful saxophone. This album was more entertaining that I was expecting following the intro track. I don't usually go in for R&B, but this was an enjoyable listen with a few standouts that got me bobbing along. Solid 3 / 5. Added to Library? No Songs Added to Playlists:

Had to find this one of Youtube, which I don't normally love. However, I liked watching some of videos. Terence had some superstar energy with the hair and the dance moves. Dance Little Sister was my favorite. Let's Go Forward was solid too. His voice is good and has a good range, but nothing about this album really encapsulated me.

Bien. Varios megahits: If You Let Me Stay, I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words), I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words)

*Listening Note* This is available on Spotify but the artist has changed his name: Senanda Meitraya. The album was a smooth bump in the late 80s.

Enjoyable album but falls a bit short. The 80s production hasn’t all aged greatStill, a nice listen

"Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby," released in 1987, showcases Terence Trent D'Arby's undeniable talent and charisma. With hits like "Wishing Well" and "Sign Your Name," D'Arby blends soul, R&B, and rock influences. His vocals are impressive, and the album's production is polished. However, at times, the ambitious fusion of genres feels a bit forced, and the album can come across as stylistically scattered. While it's a strong debut with notable moments, the overall cohesiveness could be improved. "Introducing the Hardline" merits a respectable 3/5 for its individual strengths but somewhat inconsistent execution.

Listened to this while playing Aeon's End with my partner against the Carapace Queen. We finally won! I have never heard of this artist but my partner knew several of the songs. It was enjoyable R&B, some super impressive vocals throughout. I particularly enjoyed the mostly a cappella piece towards the end. A solid 3.

Easy listening. I liked wishing well.

Better than I remember

Some of the instrumentals were really cool, but overall I didn't like it a ton

i found this album mostly okay somewhat annoying

This was definitely okay. It has a few bangers. Some of the production didnt do a lot for me though

Pleasant but got more boring as it went on

I'm not sure why this was so notable. It expressed some vulnerable feelings, that was true, but the production didn't seem anything special.

[Ben Kenobi voice] "That is a name I've not heard in a long time." TTD was a BFD in the late 80s. Wishing Well was everywhere and people genuinely thought he was the next Prince. Mind you, Prince was still making pretty good records at this point. According to his wikipedia page, he: (1) compared this record to Sgt. Pepper's (LOL) (2) did a massive faceplant with his second album (3) is still making music under a completely different name I liked some of the songs on here, especially the more Quiet Storm-sounding stuff. I can see myself re-visiting this at some point.

Bien. Varios megahits: If You Let Me Stay, I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words), I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words).

This was ok.

3/5 - Beautiful album

Una rolita chida, buena voz, no lo volvería a escuchar.

Surprisingly good music. I knew TTD from my youth but never liked his sound and never really got the vibe either. Too smooth. Now, though, this smoothness really works for me.

Very jammy. The bass line and recorders on Wishing Well are so delightfully silly. Terence's voice is great and the high point of every song. Tracks like Let's Go Forward where he's really letting loose and belting it sound phenomenal. All in all, I'm not a fan of this type of music, but this album had a lot of charm, even with some less than stellar tracks like "If You All Get to Heaven". "Who's Loving You" is a great way to close out the album. Kind of wish more tracks featured sax. Doubt I'll listen to it again anytime soon, but I'm glad I did.

Not really what I'm into but the guy has an amazing voice and writes decent songs. A few I liked quite well. Also interesting that he was a member of INXS for a brief time.

Never heard of before. Extremely relaxing and artful.

The Hardline is that it’s a pretty good album, according to myself that is.

In this album has some high points, but for the most part, it felt like a very dated album. Clearly, Terrence has a beautiful voice, and really, that carried most songs. 6/10.

it's nice near the start but the sheer sound of 80s music starts to take over as it progresses in a bad way. the last song is good though.

He’s like a budget Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder combined - and that’s not an insult. It’s hard to get to their level but he comes damn close - voice and performance wise. Songs are ok, it’s a good record overall - although not my cup of tea per se.

I enjoyed it, but I was wondering the whole time if there weren't folks who had done this either earlier or better?

album un peu underwhelming pour une 600eme ecoute mais oh well

B- If You All Get to Heaven 4 If You Let Me Stay 3 Wishing Well 2 I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words) 4 Dance Little Sister 2 Seven More Days 4 Let's Go Forward 3 Rain 3 Sign Your Name 4 As Yet Untitled 3 Who's Loving You 3 Imagine a world where Michael Jackson had a normal childhood. He wasn't used as a circus act by his abusive father. Instead, he went to school, wasn't a star, and lived like everyone else. He inevitably turns to music as a career when it's time to go to college. He goes to Julliard and for his senior thesis, he makes this album. Convinced yet? Off the wall, am I right?

Michael Jackson son

I’m really confused by this

Good album but dated

He's trying to hard on if you all get to heaven, but by the time we get to wishing well, there's a freedom and energy that is a bit infectious. How weird is it that there are two songs back to back to begin an album with the word, 'if'? If this was a baseball game, it would be a record of some sort. Get it?

Heard this a lot when it was released. Pros The voice. The hits Not that 80s sounding. Cons Some tracks a bit bland.

Mom, can we get Michael Jackson? No. we have Michael Jackson at home! *Michael Jackson at home. To be honest, he’s talented and has a great songwriting ability. His voice is interesting. I’m not a fan of the boring song structures, but everyone once in awhile it clicked. Just a little too experimental without the ability to make it really pop.

Généralement très solide, voix assez incroyable. La qualité de production est présente. Ce n'est pas exactement mon style donc à la longue je me tannais, mais pour les fans du soul ce doit être un excellent album. 7/10

Liked the vibe but it got old fast

Nostalgia vote.. the last time I listened to this entire album was 1987

He's very good at what he does but boy does that sound dated. It's not for me but I didn't mind listening to it, and there are definitely bits I like more than I thought I did.

Ganske nice

Gets the job done, if the job was being a mediocre Prince

An average album, pretty solid all the way through. I hear Wishing Well a lot, and it's the best track.

Unsure how this album made the list. It's not bad just not what I find essential.

I remember my roommate had this in college. I like several of the songs, and others not so much.

не люблю такое рнб, хотя восхищена общей плодовитостью чувака

Mooi rustig

A lot of records like this out there.

Not a bad album, I liked the variety of all the songs. But he had way too much confidence in his high note/belting abilities....

I didn't think was as bad as the other reviews suggested. Some heavy repetition within songs themselves, which often drag on, but the range of styles and themes, whilst remaining cohesive as an album, is impressive. Quite pleasant as background music (apart from As Yet Untitled, which is a bit harsh, like a drill).

Nimi ku iso kirja heh.. musiikki yksinkertaista mielekästä ja helppoa..

I remember watching “Wishing Well” on MTV and thinking these are the coolest MFs I’ve ever seen.

I gotta say that the late 80s is really not my era for soul. I like this album well enough. He has a great voice, and the songwriting is always competent, but the music just leaves me feeling uninspired. I'm not sure exactly what it is, though I find the tone on the bass to be really grating. Wishing Well is my fucking jam, though, as is Sign Your Name. The highs are high with this album, but the lows taste like coconut, and I really don't care for the taste of coconut 3/5

Not a one hit wonder of the 90s. Enjoyed it.

Soul. Una canción conocida.

Bien. Varios megahits: If You Let Me Stay, I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words), I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words)

Eh. It's got it's good qualities. I'm not really a big soul guy and I think that Darby is bit of an over-singer but I can recognize the talent and quality of the songs. It's nice to know who sang that Wishing Well song now.

Incredibly 80s, like, almost absurdly so. "Wishing Well" is of course instantly recognizable and iconic, but the album in general doesn't quite work for my sensibilities. I do like "I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words)" however, and "Dance Little Sister" is fun! 3/5

Funky fresh ballady stuff. Not massively my bag but was a vibe

Funky stuff! I did really enjoy it but can't imagine listening to it again.

Very reminiscent of Prince and MJ. However, feels a little derivative.

All I know about TTD is the song Wishing Well and I really like it. Always been a favorite of mine and I still even occasionally whistle that whistlin’ part. But that’s all I know. This album started kinda weird talking about Heaven and sending his mom prayers and stuff if you get there or something. But that first maybe 5 songs are all pretty good, to varying degrees. The album kinda slows down after that and I lost interest. As Yet Untitled should stayed off the record. No wonder it didn’t get a title. Nothing bad, nothing great (besides WW). I’m thinking he’s trying to be Micheal Jackson and naw, he ain’t no Mikey Jacks. This would get a 4 on a scale of 1-10 so since nothing is outright terrible or annoying, I’ll give it a 3. Mighta got a 4 if the second half lived up to the first but even then, probs nots. That mighta been a 6 out of 10. Meh. I dunno.

First listen. I knew the songs Wishing Well and Sign Your Name. Not bad at all, really (except that As Yet Untitled song, what a bore). The two singles are pretty good and I really liked the upbeat James Brown inspired "Dance Little Sister." But nothing really made me want to explore his music further either.

I guess that this album made a star of Terence Trent D'Arby/Sananda Maitreya, but I was not all that impressed with it. There was a moment or two, but overall, as an album, I have no desire to revisit again.

Welp, I really shouldn't have read his Wikipedia page or the iMusic description or talked to my friends about this album before doing today's homework. It was super hard to give this an unbiased listen. I personally have always loved Wishing Well and might even place it in my top 100 songs of all time. (Might. Definitely not top 10. Probably not top 50. But maybe top 100.) But it seems some of my friends hate it and I don't know who they are anymore. Also, TTD', now known as Sananda Maitreya, sounds kind of insufferable and I kind of couldn't stop thinking about that today. I'm not completely sure why this album is here.

Never heard of TTD before listening to this, good album deserves to be on the list, but just not to my personal taste to make it 4 stars.

Discount Michael Jackson. Decent enough

Its OK. Decent, but not great. 3/5

Average. Nothing special nothing terrible.

Terence's comment that this was the most important album since Sgt Pepper has not aged well. I like the blend of soul and 80s synth but not that epic.

I recognized a couple of the songs. The album was alright and I would listen to some of the songs again.

Maybe it's because it's already a familiar song but the cover of Who's Loving You was the best song here. The record is a fun, soulful dancing affair but I spent most of the time listening to it wishing I was listening to someone like Michael Jackson instead.

I think the self-aggrandizement sabotaged folks' perception of what was a solid debut. Decent album, got a lot of airplay on college radio stations on release. Never noticed how much the refrain to Dance Little Sister sounds just like (Heaven 17) Penthouse and Pavement.

D’Arby has an extremely dexterous and soulful voice. Sadly, the production and arrangements are painfully dated.

3 Easy listening but it's not my thing

Not a very convincing effort, though there are several great songs (Dance Little Sister, Sign Your Name, ..) on this album.

I recognize one of the songs from family guy. Other than that, did not know much about this artist going in. Some really nice stuff in here!

reminds me of tracy chapman

1/26- Driving to school

A little dated but his voice is still beautiful

pretty good sound, enjoyed it.

Imagine a wistfully smiling face at the end of a 1980's buddy comedy and then the black screen with white text comes up. These are the songs that get played over that. Best Tracks: If You Let Me Stay; Wishing Well; Sign Your Name

Terence Trent D'Arby has an incredible voice. I've always loved that raspiness. I actually own this album so I could play Wishing Well on repeat. That song and music video are sultry (it's one of my all-time favorites). Sign Your Name is great, but the rest of the album is a miss for me.

A guilty pleasure every year or so.

Great album, not my cup of tea

Some great song on there but not all are winners.

Jai un mix feeling. Je ne sais pas trop le sryle ca va a plusieurs endroits tout au long de l'labum. Il y a beaucoup d'espace pour la creativité mais ce n'est pas tout sur la meme ligne directrice. 3.5

Great voice powerful songs

I mean how good a song is Wishing Well? Just outstanding and right in my wheel house. Too bad the rest of the album can't match it. Often sounds like TTD is a Michael Jackson wannabe. 3 stars

The slyly catchy "Wishing Well" alone proves that Terence Trent D'Arby, these days known as Sananda Maitreya, was the ambassador of soul at the time. The album still sounds good today, despite the typical production cues of the 80s, such as the drum beat with echo and the keyboards on "If You All Get To Heaven", the album's opening track. The sultry "Sign Your Name" sounds modern still though and is one of the highlights. He also shows remarkable singing talents on the a cappella "As Yet Untitled". Later he would not be a musician so much as a personality with grandiose opinions on himself, which distracted from his work. This multi-platinum and Grammy-winning album is a worthy memento of his considerable talent. 3,5*

Not sure I needed to hear this again

really quite good

Better than I was expecting, honestly.

Nice music, he has a good voice. I don’t know if I’ll be going back though, but I didn’t dislike listening to it.

Holds up well, only knew the single Wishing Well. Great vocals and musicianship, album does fade out near the end

The album cover led me to believe that this would be a slow, Tracy Chapman-type thing but it was actually a lot more lively than that besides the untitled track. It starts out as like a sort of activist album that was typical for the 80s in the first song but ended with neo-soul which was interesting.

Pop, soul.

Somewhat of an interesting listen. Seemed to have a mix of soul, early r&b, and maybe a bit of jazz all mixed together. He’s pretty talented, but the songs didn’t particularly grab my attention. Not an album I particularly loved, but I didn’t hate it or count down the minutes until it was over either.

Átti þessa plötu. nokkrir góðir slagarar en annars bara miðlungsverk.

Mmmm ok

Huge play of Wishing Well and Sign Your Name in my high school days, then this artist fell wholly from my awareness. Hearing it again the first time in a long time, it strikes me as pretty straightforward Soul.

What can I say? it's nice music, doesn't inspire me or particularly grab me. That said I could happily listen over and over. strong 3

Some undeniable bops here. Dude is talented, and I like the way he brought something more soulful to 80s pop. A solid debut, not the best ever made, but solid.

Dit is echt jeugdsentiment. Kan hier nog steeds naar luisteren.

Jeugdsentiment!

It was ight

He is a good singer and his hit "Dance little sister" it was in all the radios years ago.

80s rnb pop movie montage music. hasn't aged super gracefully but it's an interesting time capsule

Great songs but horrible, dry late 80s production.

Was ok. Single tracks were great everything else was ok. Vocals were great. Rain rain go away was weird

Nice — he has a style like Michael Jackson. His vocals are great — he’s very soulful and a showman too. Solid, funky 80’s pop. Highlights: “If You Let Me Stay,” “Wishing Well,” “Dance Little Sister,” “Let’s Go Forward,” “Rain,” “Who’s Loving You”

Interesting sound, it's like 80's electronic soul funk. Some of the mix / post production decisions are interesting and I find some songs have moments that sound pretty dynamically weak or a little thin. I do like the overall flow of the album; I think the artist did a good job at placing the tracks and there is a great mix of longer songs that explore / develop more, and shorter tracks that hang around a single hook and repeat it often and this was a standout idea of the album for me. Some of these tracks repeat the hook SO much that you can't really help but get them stuck in your head. "Wishing Well", "Seven More Days", "Let's Go Forward"... they are so short, repetitive, and romantic that it kind of feels like a.. love-making album? lol.

3/5 good but not enough

Somedays I have an instant lol reaction when the new album pops up as the screen refreshes. Shame about the late 80s production, some great vocals The big question is do I keep going onto 'Neither Fish nor Flesh'?

This version of James Brown is more slick, but something's missing.

Album durchwachsen, insgesamt ganz schlechte drei.

Not bad.

Outside my usual preferences but pretty decent. As Yet Untitled makes a better closer than the actual last track.

10th February 2022 Didn’t listen until the 11th, drove to pick up Wi-Fi extension and sainsburys before Caroline and Ian etc stay for the weekend. Michael Jackson, Prince and Stevie Wonder’s love child. I like the poppier tracks over the ballads.

Anoter good album, with some bangers on it. This guy should had released more albums!!

meh, 3

Easy listening progressive soul. Similar to - but not quite as catchy as - Stevie Wonder. Some songs (Wishing Well) are pretty fun but others are less memorable and makes the album feel a little long in my opinion. The more engaging fun songs don't quite make up for the cheesier overarching story of the record.

I have mixed feelings. The songs are quite catchy and well written, and Terence's singing is quite fantastic and almost carries the entire album. On the other hand, it seems like the album is afraid to commit too much to one single genre and hops around. The lyrics are also a little cheesy and gimmicky. 5/10

It's alright. His voice is enjoyable and some of the tracks like "Dance Little Sister" and "If All You Get To Heaven" are some undoubtedly funky tunes. Overall not very memorable though, seems like a fairly above-average 80s album, not something you "must hear before dying".

Pretty unique and compelling R&B from the 80's! I'm not a huge fan of it but it's pretty good for what it's worth.

80s as hell. Reminds me a bit of Michael Bolton mixed with Prince. He's clearly a talented singer but definitely not my style.

Very 80s. The spotify bio describes the artist as a grittier Prince. I see that to a point. Dude's got a lovely voice. It should be noted that this artist now goes by Sananda Maitreya.

Alle de gode lyde. Funky, soul-y og masser af den søde søde blæs

2021.12.15 if you all get to heaven sign your name as yet untitled who’s loving you

I wonder if it's unfair to judge an album for sounding too much like the time during which it was made, but here we are... Some minor positive surprises among the tracks, but probably not much I feel like I need to hear a second time.

It's an alright album but have to give propts to Terence Trent D'Arby's vocals here. So lively and brilliant piece of soul, just unfortunate the production is very dated here and gets a bit annoying. I did like half the songs on here a lot actually but the remaining were skippable. Let's Go Forward and As Yet Untitled were the best songs here and can see why Wishing Well would've been a big hit.

It’s good, but some parts feel dated. Like he’s very talented, but there were only one or two songs that stuck out to me. Certainly sounds like it was monumental perhaps at the time, but now it’s a bit dated.

Some interesting instrumental moments and good lyrical content make for a mixed bag of enjoyable and skippable tracks. Can definitely see how this album helped pioneer RnB as we know it, not my cuppa tea. 6/10.

I vaguely remember this dude from when I was a kid, I don't recognise any of these songs though. It's pretty cool, bit of a Michael Jackson vibe going on. Rocking and funky at the same time, solid bit of 80s pop. 3/5.

"Wishing Well" sounded familiar. A good album to relax to!

Wishing Well, Let's Go Forward, Rain (зависит от настроения, вот это одна из дурацких песен, которые как пародии звучат, но в целом хоть внимание цепляет), Who's Loving You (кавер неплохо вышел) ни в какие вороты: Dance Little Sister (хватит плясать, пацаны, давайте поработайте что ли), As Yet Untitled (это вообще невыносимые стенания какие-то, ни одна песня такого рода не может быть оправдана) 6/10

Every song I thought I’d finally got the measure of the music (not quite MJ, not quite Prince…) but then in would roll another irresistible hook, and, well, it all ended up being rather undeniably its own thing.

Sounds like the 'best friends' medley on the soundtrack to an 80s movie. Standout tracks: Wishing Well, If You All Get to Heaven, Who's Loving You

It's an interesting mix of styles with an undoubtedly talented singer at the front. But the music is also completely forgettable and too synth-heavy and polished. It wasn't bad. But it didn't stand out as good either.

Very dated 80s R&B production but solid songs and performances.

soulful as hell not for me, but good

it was ok not my bag really

Not my cup of tea

If TTD had been working in the sixties, what amazing soul music we would have had. And whilst there are some great tracks on this album like Let Me Stay and Sign Your Name, you never quite feel the music showcases his voice the way it should - the production is a little synth heavy and artificial.

only knew the hit...interesting beyond that.

Was kinda like michael Jackson

‘Sign Your Name’ and ‘Wishing Well’ are the all-time classics they’re made out to be. ‘Dance Little Sister’ is also a great pop-funk number that both Prince and James Brown would’ve been proud to have written, and ‘Who’s Loving You’ is a worthy Smokey Robinson cover. And yet while it’s a solid enough debut effort overall, the rest of the album leaves me feeling a little cold, perhaps partly due to the late 80s synth heavy sound which makes the album sound somewhat dated to my ears.

Really fun album. Good listen. R+B meets pop.

Pleasant but not memorable, did save the first track tho. 7

Bit dated but his voice is undeniable and the singles still bang

Parts of this are pretty cool.

Not bad. Not great

This is a really interesting mashup of soul, funk, gospel, pop, and R&B. Start of the album is stronger than the end. Favorite songs are wishing well and If you all get to heaven. Reminds me of George Michael a little.

Real 80s flashback vibes

Is het niet mogelijk halve puntjhes te geven ;)?

A little hit and miss, but I like his voice and some of the tracks. Fav tracks: sign your name/as yet untitled

I like how it starts with a gospel vibe and then takes off in a million different directions before the first song ends.   I was surprised to see how many musicians play on this. With it's being a first album one would think they would make do with just one drummer/ percussionist  rather than the four listed. I see they also have a brother who plays the sinubla - whatever the fuck that is. The production is really quite amazing. His laughing in Wishing Well is a miracle of production technology. Ditto for the other shouts and talking (in that tune and others) that are made to sound like he backed up from the mic. The LP started to wear on me after 5 / 6 songs. Perhaps a little too fastidious for too long.

Taitavaa musisointia ja laulamista. Tasaisen hyvä hienosti tehty levy, mutta henkilökohtaisesti ne korkeat valot jäi puuttumaan. Siksi 3,5 kääntyy nyt 3.

Great pop album & voice

This was solid, if not too religious. Kinda weird at some points for sure

Soul. Una canción conocida.

A mix of Stevie Wonder, Prince, MJ. Overall I liked the album. Not bad!

Interesting, wasnt in the mood for genre, similar to Prince.

A weird album. The artist clearly has talent and there are some great funky rhythms going on here, but it's mixed with completely bizarre songs like his interpretation of the "rain, rain, go away" children's song. The album's worth a listen for the curious, but somebody looking for something to enjoy listening to can skip straight to the singles.

ja gut, kann man machen. 3

This is his first album. It went platinum in like three days in the UK. Reminds me a lot of Michael Jackson. Really good album!

Me gustó en general aunque se hace largo al final.

Nice sound, some unmemorable

Classic soulful love songs. Great voice, reminds me of Jackson.

Had no idea Wishing Well was by Trent.

Täysin uusi tuttavuus itselleni. Näköjään Suomessakin tätä levyä on myyty kultalevyn arvoisesti eli ilmeisesti jotain aukkoja on omassa sivistyksessäni.

Wishing well kiss and tell💋

i liked it! "seven more days", "let's go forward", & "sign your name" are nice.

'Wishing Well' is a great single even with the awful 1980's production & 'Dance Little Sister' is lots of fun but that's pretty much it as far as highlights. It's not an awful album by any means but by God it's a boring one & sometimes that's worse. Another WTF is this album doing on here moment brought to you by the bipolar 1001 Albums list.

No thank you. It’s just such drivel.

Listened Before? N I remember Wishing Well from the 80s... yep. Thats about it. This wasn't memorable for me. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Wishing Well

Music production in the 80s was genuinely abysmal what were they thinking

"Say a prayer for my camel / As I ride through the desert" ...? 80s funk pop/rock. Not awful but definitely not my cup of tea. "Dated" is spot on.

Every song feels like the end credits to any Disney movie between Oliver and Company and Hunchback of Notre Dame. Which is neither a dig nor a compliment.

Sounds like it was made in a funko pop plant. Just so plastic!

É aquela musica

It's quit good so far. Has great vocals and songs, some more to my liking than others, have interesting shifts to them. In my opinion there is not enough variation in energy. He's pushing very hard almost all the time. And while there are this interesting shifts in some songs, I can't say it's a harmonic or melodic masterclass. Good arrangements though... Let's go Forward is my favorite song so far. Very good composition. Rain my least favorite, not a good song. As yet untitled is a very special track. Resonates. Last track is a banger. I don't really know why, but this album left me feeling a bit bad. It's probably because of the bad day I was Having yesterday, but still. I'll give it a high 2. Still appreciate the good tracks and talent but my mind isn't there.

Very 80s production very wacko jack lite

Not as 80 awful as I expected (or vaguely remembered). Still, it's a 2 from me.

Hella dated. Almost an easy 1, but Wishing Well went kinda hard...

Finally some black music, and it's the most white sounding pop/soul. List is embarrassing in places.

Little too 80’s for my taste. Plus he seems at times like he’s trying to emulate MJ (HEEEheee)

So boring. So many of these songs are just the same line repeated over and over in a way that doesn’t work.

Over-glossy soundtrack to a lifestyle I'm not buying

Imagine being a male pop vocalist during the 80s and having to be compared to Michael Jackson at his height.

About as good as Coldplay

Very 80s in the best ways but not my taste

#929. It's alright. 2/5: meh

The hit songs I've heard, but then nothing too much that sparked in me. I guess Trent have had its comparisons to Michael Jackson back in the days? But in my ears falls into the shadows

This sounded like the album/artist was trying to capitalize on the success of Michael Jackson. MJ was all I could hear while listening to this. I was not impressed.

I didn't really care for this artist back in the day when he used to get a little MTV play and this listen didn't change that.

Boring 80s funk balads

The way this shows up on Amazon Music these days uses his current name, Sananda Maitreya, which was surprising — not that the artist name has updated, but that the title of the album and the cover image use the newer name. I had only heard the singles before this, although I was certainly aware of the album. Really enjoying "Rain." And "As Yet Untitled" is beautiful.

I mean, yeah ..pretty good for cheesy 80s soul. I remember Wishing Well being ubiquitous on the radio back in the day. But damn do I hate long held high note scream-singing like on the final song. It makes me angry. And for that I removed a star.

I don’t hate it, but 80s cheese is really cranked up here. I was into seven more days though

Introducing The Hardline According To *Sananda Maitreya If you're going to put your own name so prominently in the title of an album, you have to be really sure you won't change your name in a fit of weird spiritual awakening. And if you do, fair enough, you should also be aware that going back and retrospectively fixing the title of said album will just look daft.

Opener on the album was interesting, but then the rest devolved into typical 80's R&B which was pretty boring.

Felt like a real bait and switch the longer the album went on

Very dated. Just not for me.

The first song was good, everything else sounded like Poundland MJ

Mostly meh. First, couldn't figure out just how many names this artist gets to claim. Took me a second to be sure I had the right album... Thought it was Zendaya singing Terence Trent D'Arby. Weird. Anyway, from 1987 and a little dated. I'll give it up for Wishing Well, but that's about it. Sounds like he could be Bruno Mars' illegitimate father... Electronic drums and keyboard/synth, not terribly soulful singing even though he tries. Not terrible.

++: If You Let Me Stay, Wishing Well, Sign Your Name, Who's Loving You +: Dance Little Sister, Rain +-: I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words) -: If You All Get to Heaven, Seven More Days, Let's Go Forward, As Yet Untitled 4,5/10

Mid road pop. Nothing much there

music is a touch cheesy (“Rain”) but this guy’s voice is pretty amazing

Somewhere I read that he thought this album was more important the Sgt. Pepper. I have to say it falls more than a little short.

There's a great album burried behind the 80's production, but as it is does not impress me much

come on. this is basically penis music.

great album name, not the biggest fan of it tho

I have not heard this before. I remember hearing Wishing Well on the radio and MTV a lot and I figured he was a one hit wonder, and I don’t think I’ve heard any of his other songs. The main thing I am noticing listening to this album is that it has that really terrible production from the mid to late 80s that drenches every instrument in a kind of synthetic sound, it’s noticeable most in the drums and keyboards which are electronic and filtered as hell, but the guitars and bass have an uncanny valley feel I guess as the best way I can describe it. This sound covers so much pop and r&b from 1986 to 1989 that made it hard for me to like anything from these genres in this era. So this is going to be a big stumbling block for me enjoying this album. I’m recognizing other songs from the radio including Sign Your Name which I always liked. Unfortunately that one and Wishing Well are the only two songs good enough to overcome the production. I am wondering if I would like any of the rest of these songs without that ‘87 studio polish and with a better keyboard, like maybe there are a few hidden gems, but on a second listen I don’t think that’s the case.

80’s rock with a little Tracey Chapman sound

michael jackson meets sade meets I cant remember who the third one was. Decent

not really a 2 but not a quite a 3 either, there are some boppers though.

It might just be my car stereo but this album really suffers from some of the recording foibles of the 80s. I wonder what it could be like if it was able to have bigger drums. Other than that, this song has a single I recognize but I don't think it was that different from anything going on at the time.

Amazing for an artist to do so little with so much. Absolutely stunning voice, but i was barely able to force myself to pay attention to the record. 0 dopamine delivered, I had some mental notes made about the first track having weird pacing and starting the record with a very middle of the album energy, and then my brain slid straight off the music and starting thinking about something else. After the biggest track, apparently, 'Sign Your Name' with 200m plays on Spotify, wrapped up, it had barely touched the sides. Just as I was considering literally switching it off to do something else, the opening gambit of As Yet Untitle peeled out, unaccompanied vocals finally delivering some sonic contrast and letting Terences true talent genuinely shine. But my optimism is shortlived, by the 5th minute the vocal only endeavour has once again forgotten to be interesting in spite of technical ability and vocal talent. I'll be honest, i switched off if the final track is the cover of Who's Loving You i think it is, I'll stick with the Michael Jackson version. Thanks Terrence, now i see why your record is on every charity shop vinyl shelf in the Uk.

Not for me

3/10 - He has a good voice but I did not like the album. It felt like a production company saw the success of Thriller/MJ and Purple Rain/Prince and tried to recreate it in a forced way. The album felt like a Disney remake of good albums.

This is almost impressively boring, given how much energy he seems to put into it. I can't believe this was top of the charts for so long. I don't recognise ANY of these songs, so it goes to show how well it's endured in the culture. As others have said, it doesn't help that the 80's aesthetic is dreadful.

Strong voice, just a pity that the music is weaker than it should have been.

Pretty upbeat. Quite 80s in sound. Bit naf in places. Nothing really stands out. I even find 'sign my name' is quite dated in terms of instrumentals etc.

Feels very of it's time, but not particularly captivating.

I liked the first two songs and then this fell off so hard

'We have Prince at home', except this Prince forgot how to be fun OR funky. Recommended for all those who care about great voices and not much else.

This one is as wierd. Prince vibes but also reminded me a lot of early 90s pop. Didn’t love it, probably won’t be back

Most of this was generic 80’s love music which is fine. Then he had a song that had the “rain rain rain go away” rhyme as the chorus and I got mad at this whole album.

Another nobody, doesn't connect Wishing well Dance little sister

- It gives a very sterile/packaged feeling, which is annoying given his soulful voice. Basically, they somehow made a soulful Black man sound like he is singing basic White af music. - The songs bored me - I didn't find anything interesting in them. The instrumentation is your basic 80s random percussion and jangly or honking/horn sounding (I have no idea what effect does that) keys. - Wishing Well and Sign Your Name are jams, for sure, and they were everywhere when I was a kid. - I won't go back to this album, and it doesn't deserve to be on this list. - Reading about how TTD, now Sananda Maltreya after breaking down when he was humiliated about flopping and reinventing himself, kept grandstanding, saying this was the best album in the world makes me like it even less. Delusional narcissism much? This is just so bland.

This is platonic ideal of 80s production. I struggle with the mad tropes in this- the punchy snares, the keyboard, the MJ-style vocals, the cheesy lyrics. This is doing things to soul I do not like. The vocals are really good and I can't help but thinking if this was a different genre it would be so much better

This guy can really sing. A bit like Sade, it's soft-pop smoochers for middle-of-the-road 80s shaggers. But I got a wee kick of nostalgia from a few tracks, like Sign Your Name.

I appreciate a conscious soul record. 80s nostalgia has a way with me at times but this was just Unremarkable.

Very 80s. Some good singles

For an 80s album it was fine. Prince-like vibe.

He has a great voice but I hate the sound of this record

I need more than just Wishing Well to keep me interested

These songs sound like the kinds you hear during the credits of a 90s movie. Not for me, but not bad.

Three very evocative 80's bangers (Wishing Well / If you let me stay / Sign your name) which take me right back to the glories of Now Thats what I call Music compilations and the Sunday Chart show. He's got a great voice but I didn't particularly care for the songs then and I care even less now. Rest of album of pretty lite 80's plastic soul.

Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Aarby This is definitely a bit of a mixed bag, he’s got a great voice of course, capable of both soulful tenderness and soulful grittiness, but the song quality is a bit patchy and it loses its way a bit in the middle. Sign my Name is a great late 80s soulful pop song, and the retro soul of the excellent If You Let Me Stay (love the organ) and the quirky synth of the great Wishing Well are very enjoyable. If You All Get to Heaven also has a nice drama to it. As Yet Untitled’s solemn acapella is great as well. Those more upbeat retro-soul-pop-driven tracks do seem to work better, when it is more funk driven, like I’ll Never Turn My Back on You, and when he goes OTT with the James Brownisms on Dance Little Sister, or gets a bit overwrought on the cover of Who’s Loving You it feels less successful. And in between it’s mainly pleasant if largely generic late 80s soul - Seven More Days, Let’s Go Forward and Rain are nice enough, but hard to recall. Granted the piano can often sound uber 80s, particularly on I’ll Never Turn My Back, but I think the 80s-ness of the production, particularly the songs Martyn Ware is involved with, is actually a plus point here, especially on Wishing Well and If You Let Me Stay, the latter fitting right alongside Aretha & George and Annie Lennox & Al Green in that nice little genre of 80sified retro soul. Although I enjoyed the good tracks I’m not sure there’s enough to come back to, so I’ll go a high 2. 📉📉 Playlist submission: If You Let Me Stay

Another one that's just not my cup of tea.

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. I remember thinking D’Arby was mythically special when I was younger. This was not that good.

I really just don't care for this at all. Just kinda whatever soul that is not really that inspired

There's talent here, but I got bored. Real bored.

diet mj

"Wishing Well" is still a great song, but there's a reason I'd never heard anything else by him.

Does nothing for me. Gave up on it.

Not for me

Not in the mood.

It was an alright listen, probably not something I'd come back to. But I did love the cover of Who's Lovin' You.

Some day, maybe with professional help, I may get to the bottom of my strong aversion to 80's pop music. For now, I will acknowledge and respect this intense emotional reaction, without quite understanding it. I tried to maintain an open mind listening to this, but I actually find in doing so I am more irritated by it. Something about the "over singing" layered on-top of the super cheesy 80's drum sounds, paired with the general bravado that the artist truly believed with is one of the greatest albums of all time.... To each their own, I don't want to yuck anyone else's yum, but this album is very much not my taste in music.

Slick Michael Jackson-ish soul with big 80s production and mechanical drums. A bit reminiscent of the Eurythmics. To me, it's as dull as dishwater.

Even if it was really well done, I wouldn't enjoy this much, as it's just not my sort of music. Also the 80s production is hard to ignore, making itself known by its sheer awfulness. I was surprised how many songs I knew from this album, but none of them were ones I looked back on fondly. Terence seems like a mix between Michael Jackson and Prince in places, but fails to excel. I'm going with two stars, slightly stingy, as much of it is workable, but it doesn't feel worthy of a full three stars from me.

Finger snapping, toe tapping, knee slapping music. Perfectly tolerable but not too memorable.

I think the '80s production is doing a lot to carry songs without much of a tune. The vocals aren't impressing me too much either. Perhaps it's a little reductive to say, but if I want music like this but much better, I'm listening to Michael Jackson or Prince.

I didn’t particularly enjoy the music, and I find this guy to be quite eccentric based on his Wikipedia article. I don’t trust him.

Terence Trent D'arby is one of those names I know, but I had no idea who it was. The Wikipedia review suggests this is a cultural moment I should be aware of. I think I only recognised "sign your name" and my feelings on that match the rest of the album. Man this is boring. Its not in a space I enjoy musically, it just happens and then it ends, my brain goes, oh good that's ended I can put on something good now. I'm somewhat baffled it was so popular. Ah well.

*Introducing the Hardline* sounds like a polished artifact from the late ’80s: slick, funky, but weightless without ever feeling urgent or dangerous. Sananda Maitreya’s voice does the heavy lifting— turning weak songs into memorable moments. Some tracks feel oddly familiar, triggering hazy childhood memories of standing in front of the radio. In another universe, this album might have launched a new Michael Jackson. Instead, it lands as stylish but disposable ’80s pop: pleasant, nostalgic, and ultimately easy to forget.

Generic 80s. Made me think of a Temu Michael Jackson. Not worthy of this list.

It just seems like Mr. D'Arcy or Maitreya or whatever his name is now (Hey! It's like Prince.) heard Michael Jackson & Prince & said: "I can do that." With varying degrees of success. I hope he evolved beyond being poor man's MJ or Prince because his voice is good & it just sounds like poppy 80s soul. 2.5

I had honestly forgotten that this album ever existed. I remember when this came out to a lot of fanfare. He was going to be the next big thing but that never happened and the general underwhelming music on this album is why. Wishing Well is a nice song and Dance Little Sister is good but the rest of it is just kind of there. Underwhelming in the mid 80s and now it's just a faded memory

sounds very 80’s, a little dated

Sounds like the 80's

Not an introduction I was seeking-out.

Great soulful voice with polished production. Diet Michael Jackson on the mic.

A derivative, and generally uninteresting album. He sings way too high in the register which makes his voice sound at the breaking point much if the time. Most of the songs sound like bad Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 covers (horn sections and all). The slower ballads also weren't amazing, other than Sign Your Name which is a bop. If he had gone in more of a Sade direction with this I think it'd have been more successful. 2/5

his voice is nice but i'm really bored, got nothing else to say honestly. Highlights: Seven More Days, Rain, Who's Loving You ???

Holy 80s

80s R&B based pop in the style (if not the achievement) of Michael Jackson, this record has some clear highlights - mostly the overplayed hits such as "Wishing Well" and "Sign Your Name". The album tracks are a bit uneven, and the production throughout is extremely dated. Overall, it comes across as a record that doesn't successfully transcend where it came from, and as such remains an occasionally interesting and modestly engaging curio from the period.

i liked the first track, but it was just kinda downhill from there. nearly everything after that was pretty boring, nothing incredibly interesting to me and the songs felt way longer than they had to be despite none of them actually being very long, if that makes sense. i did like 2 songs though so it's not horrible by any means
