Introducing The Hardline According To Terence Trent D'Arby
Terence Trent D'Arby
Reviews (page 5 of 7)
3. Didn’t like it as much as I did in 87. Sign Your Name is still pretty.
Man, 'If You All Get To Heaven' knocked me on my behind, I was so ready for the rest of the album if that was the tone it would follow. Very different in the end, at least in the way that it made me feel. Kind of a shame, but still a solid entry here.
I was never a 90's R&B fan, and that's still the case. But the songwriting and production of this album is worth listening to. Still wouldn't buy it, and I'll likely never listen to it again, but it was fine.
Yep. Stuck somewhere between Michael Jackson, Prince, and Lenny Kravitz. And by between I mean miles behind. Not even at the same table.
what a period piece to the 80s, wishing well feels like the song I recognize here
Alright I suppose
This was ok.
Overall good album, didn’t really wow me but none of it was bad either. I feel like geezers would probably dog to this album. Fav tracks were wishing well, dance little sister, let’s go forward, and who’s loving you.
A mix of pop and R&B. Sounds like an off brand Michael Jackson. I liked it but didn’t really get me like I wanted.
Kirpparien levyhyllyiltä tuttu. Ihan hieno soundi! 3/5
Apart from Wishing Well & Sign Your Name, which were both killer singles, I wasn’t familiar with this album. So I was happy to discover a bunch of other terrific trax, notably Dance Little Sister, I’ll Never Turn My Back On You, Rain & the beautiful accapella track, As Yet Untitled. And I’d always figured D’Arby was a low-rent Michael Jackson. How wrong.
Entraînant, riche et texturé. Une voix qui rappelle Michael Jackson. Un peu daté dans ses arrangements, mais les thèmes abordés et les revendications demeurent d’actualité
Vaguely remember these songs on the radio growing up. More panty droppers
Catchy at times but it felt rambling and unstructured.
This guy got played quite a bit back in the MTV days when they actually played music. I remember Wishing Well, but man something about that song annoys me. He has a strong, solid voice, but outside of Dance Little Sister, Who's Loving You and Sign Your Name, nothing really stood out for me. Dance Little Sister had to be James Brown inspired. Best song off the album for me. Had to look up and check if it was a Brown cover. Who's Loving You made me think of the old 60's R&B. I would have enjoyed this album much more if the album was more like these 2 songs. Nothing bad or made want to turn off, but nothing I really want to go back and revisit either. It was a nice listen, right down the middle for me. I'll go with a 3......... 3
3 Yep, this is an 80s R&B album for sure. I feel like he’s trying to channel a little bit of every icon from this era, like Prince, Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, etc. (I swear I heard some HEE-hees), but pairing it with some of the most generic 80s production I’ve ever heard. Is it unappealing to the ears? By no means. But is it the kind of thing that sticks with you? Or that you’ll even retain an hour after listening? No, no it’s not. Obviously your mileage may vary, but this felt pretty non-distinct and unremarkable to me - you can get much better flavors of this elsewhere. The only thing that stood out to me was As Yet Untitled, which I’m pretty sure is intended to be some sort of emotional climax to the album, but it’s singlehandedly the most uncomfortable five minutes I’ve experienced in a while - if I ever listen to this thing again, that track is getting skipped. Not much else to say on this one. Shoutout to this dude for calling it the most important album since Sgt. Pepper’s though! You gotta admire the confidence.
smooth but boring
The genres listed for this here and on Wikipedia are interesting, because to me it just sounds like adult contemporary. I'm not a big adult contemporary person but I thought this album was really good! I knew "Wishing Well" already. "Dance Little Sister" was the highlight for me. More of a 3.5.
Funky, prince/MJ vibes.
Not my jam but not distasteful
This album has changed names as Terence now goes by a different name. Wishing Well is a really fun song. I like the little wind instrument sections in the middle. Dance Little Sister feels like a song I should be hearing on the dancefloor, not in my office chair. Besides a few exceptions, this album kind of felt like I'd listened to the same song ten times. It's not my favorite sound, and I probably wouldn't listen to it again. It feels like others have done this better (for me). 6/10
5/9/24. I was not familiar with this artist before today but I was really impressed with his singing ability! I also love how it goes against the grain of the typical 80s sound. I need to listen to more of his work and will revisit this one.
The exception of me hating Smooth music, Dance Little Sisters, sign Your Name and Wishing Well are smoother than melted butter but still I enjoyed them. 1000 times better than Maxwell . So 3 stars, the maximum for this type of music.
Great R&B
It's interesting that Spotify has changed the album cover title to TTD's new name, but here it has not. Strange that there are also 2 versions listed in Spotify, but there really does not seem to be a difference between them. There were a couple of tracks that oozed 80s, ("Rain," "Sign Your Name") that had such a cheesy drum machine sound on it that it took me out of it. Still, "Wishing Well" is still a hummable tune and I'll give him that.
D'Arby or Maitreya, as he goes by now, has a great voice. It can be guttural or high-pitched. He can do so much with it. But I'm not sure he's as good a lyricist. Some of the songs felt a bit hokey (just listen to the opening lines of Let's Go Forward or Dance Little Sister). And very dated - classic albums are timeless but this album's time is clearly the 80's. Wishing Well is such a fun little tune (a deserved hit) but it is so 80's. I don't think any other songs get close to being that memorable. As Yet Untitled is very mature (stripped down and all vocals, decent lyrics) and Who's Loving You is an energetic remake, but neither is as catchy. This album was ok.
I enjoyed this listen, mostly because anyone that doesn't butcher a Smokey Robinson classic is alright with me.
It feels like two things are happening in this album, neither of which are very good. One: he is trying to make music less synth and drum machine heavy, and more gospel-like. Admirable, but does feel generally like going against the grain for the sake of it, as this stuff comes off as just as generic as the music it's trying to avoid. Two: Terence, now Sananda, is doing his best "not Michael Jackson" impression. BY that I mean, he sounds just like Jackson at multiple points, but often goes into ranges outside of Jackson's usual location purely to bring as little attention to it as possible, but it's hard not to spot. That makes me feel that despite this album trying to give off a vibe of the second, err, third, err, fourth coming of soul, it really just wants to be famous, no matter the means. I don't know this for certain, but it certainly gives off that feeling, and hey, I'm all for generic 80s soul if you do it right, but you gotta wear that generic sound on your sleeve, or you'll just be the one looking weird in a crowd. It has some decent tracks on it, and most of it is forgettable, but inoffensive, but I would struggle to sell an individual this record on any means other than maybe his voice, but even that feels fake. It tries its best to avoid the plastic sound of the 80s, and only comes off feeling like a different brand of fake. Alright, but certainly fake, and no amount of frankly terrible breathy pure vocal tracks are gotta fix that. Skip As Yet Untitled to save yourself from the most uncomfortable six minutes of your life.
There were very big expectations of Terence Trent D’Arby that never really panned out for some reason. Great voice, definite “it” factor…not sure if he was a victim of poor management or just decided to wild out instead. I had a poster of him on my dorm wall in college and still enjoyed this, although it sounds pretty dated.
Album 363 of 1001 Terence Trent D'Arby - Introducing The Hardline According To Terence Trent D'Arby Rating : 3.5 / 5 Technically, its a pretty good album. Good production, decent songs, decent performance. I can appreciate what he has put together here but it doesn't resonate fully with me. I imagine he liked it enough for us all.
Some interesting songs at the start but I was losing interest by the end of the album.
hard to say whether this is funky pop or poppy funk. either way wish it was better. definitely some michael jackson influences it’s just pretty boring overall
I remember when this came out, Wishing Well was a decent sized hit, and he was sold as being from London which is more exotic than the real story... I thought about giving it a four because his vocals are strong, but ultimately it's not all that creative or groundbreaking.
A bit too pop-y for me but nothing to really dislike
Стандартные негритянские соул и рнб песнопения 90х. Припрослушивании возникает ассоциация что смотришь фильм из 90х где негитянский хор поёт в церкви.
This is a great album but I doubt I'd listen to it again. Everything late 80's/early 90's music should be IMO.
I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would. A surprising listen.
Wishing well was great, love the arrangement and his voice. To me, it was a better pop album than sign’o the times…
To echo what others said, I thought he was more spoken word soul man but obviously not. I enjoyed it. He was massive for a very particular moment in time so maybe another album will come up as I’m probably not going to listen otherwise though.
I liked this much more than I thought. I thought he was some overly smooth soul guy but there's a bit more bite to his vocals than that. I couldn't have told you any songs before this but I recognised Wishing Well and Sign Your Name having heard them and not known they were him.
Smoother and more skillful than its mouthful of a title would suggest, this is a nice soul-centric LP with the spotlight firmly focused on D'Arby's powerful vox. The writing is a bit worn (no surprises in the instrumentation or tracks here), but there's a beautiful sense of artistry and genuine emotion that makes this an engaging listen.
Wishing well 5 stars sign your name 4 stars Who’s loving you 3.5 stars Rest of album, meh.
Хз почему, но вторая половина альбома просто мимо. Первая прикольная
Pretty cool, feels like it stands out more from other pop a little.
It’s very soul almost gospel -Sounds like it belongs on a bad movie soundtrack -it’s neither bad nor great for me personally -I don’t dislike this, wouldn’t run to turn it off but not seeking it out, I’m missing the “so what” or what is ground breaking about it -Im really torn between a 2 or 3 rating, because it is objectively good, it’s just not striking anything with me as an album
Honestly this just sounds like pretty standard pop rock album made by someone who is a little better traveled than your average musician. There is a lot of unique instrumentation in this album and it add some whimsey to a couple of these songs that I found pretty fun. He's got a great voice, the horns and synth are nice but I find it to be pretty par for the course for the decade. I like it, but I don't know if there is anything that puts it above a standard bearer of the genre like MJ or sets it apart from a lot else coming out at the time other than really strong vocals.
In the cross section of music that sounds so 80s but is also good If I ever throw a 80s party I have some good songs for it.
Ikone der 80er...
2.5/5. Meh, kind of boring. Also kind of weird.
6 / 10 Pop tipo Michael Jackson. Inevitable comparar, bueno pero no es ÉL.
parece alguien bastante espeso como para cambiarse el nombre, y no está tan mal
I had never heard of this before. Good album, I thought the mixing was great.
Très funky, agréable à écouter.
Introducing the Hardline... was an incredibly successful album. Within days of its release, it sold a million copies. Terence Trent D'Arby's mix of pop, soul, R&B, and rock made for great late-80's pop. His work could be seen as a funkier Michael Jackson, or a more grounded version of Prince. His songs have great range, developed arrangements, and catchy pop melodies that had widespread appeal. This album is very much a product of the 80's, and Trent D'Arby remains a fixture of music of that time. He met with very little commercial or critical success after this, his first album. The limitations of his career reflect the limitations of this work. This album is product of the eighties, and seems very dated in retrospect.
The hits were familiar. The rest was different.
Big nostalgia hit here. All the ballady bits of Michael Jackson with some memorable percussion.
This was an interesting album, like an early 90's pop album but came out much earlier. I could have sworn I've heard Wishing Well before, too.
certainly had its moments, but was long and bit repetitive and very 80s
Very dated sounding with that reverb-heavy drum sound and slick sounding production that doesn't appeal to me at all. Back when this was released, I heard a couple of songs and didn't feel I had to hear more. Fast forward, 37 years later listening to the whole album with fresh ears, I can tolerate it. It's decent 80's R & B pop, but reminds me the 80's had so much better music than this that interested me then and now.
It was fine
Pretty average pop music. Pretty average song writing. Wishing well slaps but the rest is forgettable.6/10
It had some fun moment but overall I didn't love a lot of the lyrics, and his vocals aren't my favorite (they aren't bad! I just don't find the tone my favorite). To me this album was very reminiscent of the 80s and maybe Michael Jackson on an initial listen, especially the earlier songs. I think it might have been the vocals, not sure if that was the popular style at the time or not or just a coincidence. I personally wouldn't listen to this again
I loved this album. His voice reminded me of Micheal Jackson but had a raw and earthy quality that made me love the album. It was so groovy and I was content whilst listening. 3.5/5
Not my style, a more clean Prince. I get that the activist lyrics may have appealed to the right audience at the right time. Now it sounds like a 90s GAP commercial
If I was just rating based on the vocal performance then this would be one of the easiest 5s I’ve ever given. Unfortunately the songs themselves are often quite bland and drag on in places. The big standout is the ludicrously beautiful As Yet Untitled
Good opening and opening song. There is potential here but overall the album does not click for me. I like parts of this quite a bit but it also includes parts that I entirely do not like. Great voice. For example "Sign your name" lyrically and musically just isn't interesting to me. The same with "Rain". There is a sense to me that this pulls together a lot of tropes musically and lyrically but does not really do anything truly new and interesting with them. Rain, butterfly tears, returning -- lyrical vagueness in a poetical form. There is a breadth of materials here pulled from a previous history of music -- but it has not been assimilated and joined into something truly his own.
Solid. Michael Jackson inspired.
3.5 Well done and cohesive. Not my jam, but I can see it being someone else’s jam. Wishing well is a strong pop song, As yet untitled is beautiful
This guy wants to be Michael Jackson soooo bad. If Michael went down the road of R&B/Soul instead of pop. He’s got a great voice but it gets a bit tiresom hearing the same vocal progressions on pretty much every song. The instrumentals were kind of just there and didn’t really elevate his singing, not that it needed to be but left me wanting more from each song. Not my genre of music generally but I can appreciate the talent. 6/10
yea this guy can sing. its fine if RNB is what you want.
Again one of those albums, that really hit something when it came out, but now sounds dated, and a bit boring
Ok
Up until the last three tracks, I'd probably have believed you if you told me this was a mid tier 80s Phil Collins album. That last stretch though is pure fire. Sign Your Name and As Yet Untitled are both dark and eerie in different ways, then a lovely soul banger to see you home. It's a high three stars... Could have been a low 4
Not sure what I expected, but this was better than what I expected. More of an album, and not just some singles and filler.
Glad to be reminded this exists.
Best song by far was a Jackson 5 cover
Listened Before? No I've definitely heard Wishing Well before, but I cannot place it. Super catchy vocal delivery with an earworm of a backing instrumental. Had me nodding along NGL. Dance Little Sister is a dancefloor jam. Has harmonization that reminds of Huey Lewis and the News along with some funky bass and soulful saxophone. This album was more entertaining that I was expecting following the intro track. I don't usually go in for R&B, but this was an enjoyable listen with a few standouts that got me bobbing along. Solid 3 / 5. Added to Library? No Songs Added to Playlists:
Had to find this one of Youtube, which I don't normally love. However, I liked watching some of videos. Terence had some superstar energy with the hair and the dance moves. Dance Little Sister was my favorite. Let's Go Forward was solid too. His voice is good and has a good range, but nothing about this album really encapsulated me.
Bien. Varios megahits: If You Let Me Stay, I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words), I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words)
*Listening Note* This is available on Spotify but the artist has changed his name: Senanda Meitraya. The album was a smooth bump in the late 80s.
Enjoyable album but falls a bit short. The 80s production hasn’t all aged greatStill, a nice listen
Okay
"Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby," released in 1987, showcases Terence Trent D'Arby's undeniable talent and charisma. With hits like "Wishing Well" and "Sign Your Name," D'Arby blends soul, R&B, and rock influences. His vocals are impressive, and the album's production is polished. However, at times, the ambitious fusion of genres feels a bit forced, and the album can come across as stylistically scattered. While it's a strong debut with notable moments, the overall cohesiveness could be improved. "Introducing the Hardline" merits a respectable 3/5 for its individual strengths but somewhat inconsistent execution.
Listened to this while playing Aeon's End with my partner against the Carapace Queen. We finally won! I have never heard of this artist but my partner knew several of the songs. It was enjoyable R&B, some super impressive vocals throughout. I particularly enjoyed the mostly a cappella piece towards the end. A solid 3.
Easy listening. I liked wishing well.
Better than I remember
Some of the instrumentals were really cool, but overall I didn't like it a ton
i found this album mostly okay somewhat annoying
This was definitely okay. It has a few bangers. Some of the production didnt do a lot for me though
Pleasant but got more boring as it went on
I'm not sure why this was so notable. It expressed some vulnerable feelings, that was true, but the production didn't seem anything special.
[Ben Kenobi voice] "That is a name I've not heard in a long time." TTD was a BFD in the late 80s. Wishing Well was everywhere and people genuinely thought he was the next Prince. Mind you, Prince was still making pretty good records at this point. According to his wikipedia page, he: (1) compared this record to Sgt. Pepper's (LOL) (2) did a massive faceplant with his second album (3) is still making music under a completely different name I liked some of the songs on here, especially the more Quiet Storm-sounding stuff. I can see myself re-visiting this at some point.
Bien. Varios megahits: If You Let Me Stay, I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words), I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words).
This was ok.
3/5 - Beautiful album
Una rolita chida, buena voz, no lo volvería a escuchar.
Surprisingly good music. I knew TTD from my youth but never liked his sound and never really got the vibe either. Too smooth. Now, though, this smoothness really works for me.
Very jammy. The bass line and recorders on Wishing Well are so delightfully silly. Terence's voice is great and the high point of every song. Tracks like Let's Go Forward where he's really letting loose and belting it sound phenomenal. All in all, I'm not a fan of this type of music, but this album had a lot of charm, even with some less than stellar tracks like "If You All Get to Heaven". "Who's Loving You" is a great way to close out the album. Kind of wish more tracks featured sax. Doubt I'll listen to it again anytime soon, but I'm glad I did.
Not really what I'm into but the guy has an amazing voice and writes decent songs. A few I liked quite well. Also interesting that he was a member of INXS for a brief time.
Never heard of before. Extremely relaxing and artful.
The Hardline is that it’s a pretty good album, according to myself that is.
In this album has some high points, but for the most part, it felt like a very dated album. Clearly, Terrence has a beautiful voice, and really, that carried most songs. 6/10.
it's nice near the start but the sheer sound of 80s music starts to take over as it progresses in a bad way. the last song is good though.
He’s like a budget Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder combined - and that’s not an insult. It’s hard to get to their level but he comes damn close - voice and performance wise. Songs are ok, it’s a good record overall - although not my cup of tea per se.
I enjoyed it, but I was wondering the whole time if there weren't folks who had done this either earlier or better?

R.A.S
album un peu underwhelming pour une 600eme ecoute mais oh well
B- If You All Get to Heaven 4 If You Let Me Stay 3 Wishing Well 2 I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words) 4 Dance Little Sister 2 Seven More Days 4 Let's Go Forward 3 Rain 3 Sign Your Name 4 As Yet Untitled 3 Who's Loving You 3 Imagine a world where Michael Jackson had a normal childhood. He wasn't used as a circus act by his abusive father. Instead, he went to school, wasn't a star, and lived like everyone else. He inevitably turns to music as a career when it's time to go to college. He goes to Julliard and for his senior thesis, he makes this album. Convinced yet? Off the wall, am I right?
Michael Jackson son
I’m really confused by this
Good album but dated
He's trying to hard on if you all get to heaven, but by the time we get to wishing well, there's a freedom and energy that is a bit infectious. How weird is it that there are two songs back to back to begin an album with the word, 'if'? If this was a baseball game, it would be a record of some sort. Get it?
Heard this a lot when it was released. Pros The voice. The hits Not that 80s sounding. Cons Some tracks a bit bland.
Mom, can we get Michael Jackson? No. we have Michael Jackson at home! *Michael Jackson at home. To be honest, he’s talented and has a great songwriting ability. His voice is interesting. I’m not a fan of the boring song structures, but everyone once in awhile it clicked. Just a little too experimental without the ability to make it really pop.
Généralement très solide, voix assez incroyable. La qualité de production est présente. Ce n'est pas exactement mon style donc à la longue je me tannais, mais pour les fans du soul ce doit être un excellent album. 7/10
Liked the vibe but it got old fast
Nostalgia vote.. the last time I listened to this entire album was 1987
He's very good at what he does but boy does that sound dated. It's not for me but I didn't mind listening to it, and there are definitely bits I like more than I thought I did.
Ganske nice
Gets the job done, if the job was being a mediocre Prince
An average album, pretty solid all the way through. I hear Wishing Well a lot, and it's the best track.
Unsure how this album made the list. It's not bad just not what I find essential.
I remember my roommate had this in college. I like several of the songs, and others not so much.
не люблю такое рнб, хотя восхищена общей плодовитостью чувака
Mooi rustig
3.5
A lot of records like this out there.
Not a bad album, I liked the variety of all the songs. But he had way too much confidence in his high note/belting abilities....
I didn't think was as bad as the other reviews suggested. Some heavy repetition within songs themselves, which often drag on, but the range of styles and themes, whilst remaining cohesive as an album, is impressive. Quite pleasant as background music (apart from As Yet Untitled, which is a bit harsh, like a drill).
Nimi ku iso kirja heh.. musiikki yksinkertaista mielekästä ja helppoa..
I remember watching “Wishing Well” on MTV and thinking these are the coolest MFs I’ve ever seen.
so so
I gotta say that the late 80s is really not my era for soul. I like this album well enough. He has a great voice, and the songwriting is always competent, but the music just leaves me feeling uninspired. I'm not sure exactly what it is, though I find the tone on the bass to be really grating. Wishing Well is my fucking jam, though, as is Sign Your Name. The highs are high with this album, but the lows taste like coconut, and I really don't care for the taste of coconut 3/5
Not a one hit wonder of the 90s. Enjoyed it.
Soul. Una canción conocida.
Bien. Varios megahits: If You Let Me Stay, I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words), I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words)
Eh. It's got it's good qualities. I'm not really a big soul guy and I think that Darby is bit of an over-singer but I can recognize the talent and quality of the songs. It's nice to know who sang that Wishing Well song now.
Incredibly 80s, like, almost absurdly so. "Wishing Well" is of course instantly recognizable and iconic, but the album in general doesn't quite work for my sensibilities. I do like "I'll Never Turn My Back on You (Father's Words)" however, and "Dance Little Sister" is fun! 3/5
Funky fresh ballady stuff. Not massively my bag but was a vibe
Funky stuff! I did really enjoy it but can't imagine listening to it again.
Very reminiscent of Prince and MJ. However, feels a little derivative.
All I know about TTD is the song Wishing Well and I really like it. Always been a favorite of mine and I still even occasionally whistle that whistlin’ part. But that’s all I know. This album started kinda weird talking about Heaven and sending his mom prayers and stuff if you get there or something. But that first maybe 5 songs are all pretty good, to varying degrees. The album kinda slows down after that and I lost interest. As Yet Untitled should stayed off the record. No wonder it didn’t get a title. Nothing bad, nothing great (besides WW). I’m thinking he’s trying to be Micheal Jackson and naw, he ain’t no Mikey Jacks. This would get a 4 on a scale of 1-10 so since nothing is outright terrible or annoying, I’ll give it a 3. Mighta got a 4 if the second half lived up to the first but even then, probs nots. That mighta been a 6 out of 10. Meh. I dunno.
First listen. I knew the songs Wishing Well and Sign Your Name. Not bad at all, really (except that As Yet Untitled song, what a bore). The two singles are pretty good and I really liked the upbeat James Brown inspired "Dance Little Sister." But nothing really made me want to explore his music further either.
I guess that this album made a star of Terence Trent D'Arby/Sananda Maitreya, but I was not all that impressed with it. There was a moment or two, but overall, as an album, I have no desire to revisit again.
Welp, I really shouldn't have read his Wikipedia page or the iMusic description or talked to my friends about this album before doing today's homework. It was super hard to give this an unbiased listen. I personally have always loved Wishing Well and might even place it in my top 100 songs of all time. (Might. Definitely not top 10. Probably not top 50. But maybe top 100.) But it seems some of my friends hate it and I don't know who they are anymore. Also, TTD', now known as Sananda Maitreya, sounds kind of insufferable and I kind of couldn't stop thinking about that today. I'm not completely sure why this album is here.
Never heard of TTD before listening to this, good album deserves to be on the list, but just not to my personal taste to make it 4 stars.
Discount Michael Jackson. Decent enough
Its OK. Decent, but not great. 3/5
Average. Nothing special nothing terrible.
Terence's comment that this was the most important album since Sgt Pepper has not aged well. I like the blend of soul and 80s synth but not that epic.
I recognized a couple of the songs. The album was alright and I would listen to some of the songs again.
3.75
Maybe it's because it's already a familiar song but the cover of Who's Loving You was the best song here. The record is a fun, soulful dancing affair but I spent most of the time listening to it wishing I was listening to someone like Michael Jackson instead.
I think the self-aggrandizement sabotaged folks' perception of what was a solid debut. Decent album, got a lot of airplay on college radio stations on release. Never noticed how much the refrain to Dance Little Sister sounds just like (Heaven 17) Penthouse and Pavement.
D’Arby has an extremely dexterous and soulful voice. Sadly, the production and arrangements are painfully dated.
3 Easy listening but it's not my thing
Not a very convincing effort, though there are several great songs (Dance Little Sister, Sign Your Name, ..) on this album.
I recognize one of the songs from family guy. Other than that, did not know much about this artist going in. Some really nice stuff in here!
reminds me of tracy chapman
1/26- Driving to school
A little dated but his voice is still beautiful
pretty good sound, enjoyed it.
Imagine a wistfully smiling face at the end of a 1980's buddy comedy and then the black screen with white text comes up. These are the songs that get played over that. Best Tracks: If You Let Me Stay; Wishing Well; Sign Your Name
Terence Trent D'Arby has an incredible voice. I've always loved that raspiness. I actually own this album so I could play Wishing Well on repeat. That song and music video are sultry (it's one of my all-time favorites). Sign Your Name is great, but the rest of the album is a miss for me.
A guilty pleasure every year or so.
Great album, not my cup of tea
Some great song on there but not all are winners.
Jai un mix feeling. Je ne sais pas trop le sryle ca va a plusieurs endroits tout au long de l'labum. Il y a beaucoup d'espace pour la creativité mais ce n'est pas tout sur la meme ligne directrice. 3.5
Great voice powerful songs
I mean how good a song is Wishing Well? Just outstanding and right in my wheel house. Too bad the rest of the album can't match it. Often sounds like TTD is a Michael Jackson wannabe. 3 stars
The slyly catchy "Wishing Well" alone proves that Terence Trent D'Arby, these days known as Sananda Maitreya, was the ambassador of soul at the time. The album still sounds good today, despite the typical production cues of the 80s, such as the drum beat with echo and the keyboards on "If You All Get To Heaven", the album's opening track. The sultry "Sign Your Name" sounds modern still though and is one of the highlights. He also shows remarkable singing talents on the a cappella "As Yet Untitled". Later he would not be a musician so much as a personality with grandiose opinions on himself, which distracted from his work. This multi-platinum and Grammy-winning album is a worthy memento of his considerable talent. 3,5*
Not sure I needed to hear this again
really quite good
Better than I was expecting, honestly.
Nice music, he has a good voice. I don’t know if I’ll be going back though, but I didn’t dislike listening to it.
Holds up well, only knew the single Wishing Well. Great vocals and musicianship, album does fade out near the end
The album cover led me to believe that this would be a slow, Tracy Chapman-type thing but it was actually a lot more lively than that besides the untitled track. It starts out as like a sort of activist album that was typical for the 80s in the first song but ended with neo-soul which was interesting.
Pop, soul.
Somewhat of an interesting listen. Seemed to have a mix of soul, early r&b, and maybe a bit of jazz all mixed together. He’s pretty talented, but the songs didn’t particularly grab my attention. Not an album I particularly loved, but I didn’t hate it or count down the minutes until it was over either.
Átti þessa plötu. nokkrir góðir slagarar en annars bara miðlungsverk.
Mmmm ok
Genio
Huge play of Wishing Well and Sign Your Name in my high school days, then this artist fell wholly from my awareness. Hearing it again the first time in a long time, it strikes me as pretty straightforward Soul.
What can I say? it's nice music, doesn't inspire me or particularly grab me. That said I could happily listen over and over. strong 3
Some undeniable bops here. Dude is talented, and I like the way he brought something more soulful to 80s pop. A solid debut, not the best ever made, but solid.
Dit is echt jeugdsentiment. Kan hier nog steeds naar luisteren.
Jeugdsentiment!
It was ight
He is a good singer and his hit "Dance little sister" it was in all the radios years ago.
80s rnb pop movie montage music. hasn't aged super gracefully but it's an interesting time capsule
Great songs but horrible, dry late 80s production.
Was ok. Single tracks were great everything else was ok. Vocals were great. Rain rain go away was weird
Nice — he has a style like Michael Jackson. His vocals are great — he’s very soulful and a showman too. Solid, funky 80’s pop. Highlights: “If You Let Me Stay,” “Wishing Well,” “Dance Little Sister,” “Let’s Go Forward,” “Rain,” “Who’s Loving You”
Interesting sound, it's like 80's electronic soul funk. Some of the mix / post production decisions are interesting and I find some songs have moments that sound pretty dynamically weak or a little thin. I do like the overall flow of the album; I think the artist did a good job at placing the tracks and there is a great mix of longer songs that explore / develop more, and shorter tracks that hang around a single hook and repeat it often and this was a standout idea of the album for me. Some of these tracks repeat the hook SO much that you can't really help but get them stuck in your head. "Wishing Well", "Seven More Days", "Let's Go Forward"... they are so short, repetitive, and romantic that it kind of feels like a.. love-making album? lol.
3/5 good but not enough
Somedays I have an instant lol reaction when the new album pops up as the screen refreshes. Shame about the late 80s production, some great vocals The big question is do I keep going onto 'Neither Fish nor Flesh'?
This version of James Brown is more slick, but something's missing.
Album durchwachsen, insgesamt ganz schlechte drei.
Not bad.
Outside my usual preferences but pretty decent. As Yet Untitled makes a better closer than the actual last track.
10th February 2022 Didn’t listen until the 11th, drove to pick up Wi-Fi extension and sainsburys before Caroline and Ian etc stay for the weekend. Michael Jackson, Prince and Stevie Wonder’s love child. I like the poppier tracks over the ballads.
Anoter good album, with some bangers on it. This guy should had released more albums!!
meh, 3
Easy listening progressive soul. Similar to - but not quite as catchy as - Stevie Wonder. Some songs (Wishing Well) are pretty fun but others are less memorable and makes the album feel a little long in my opinion. The more engaging fun songs don't quite make up for the cheesier overarching story of the record.
I have mixed feelings. The songs are quite catchy and well written, and Terence's singing is quite fantastic and almost carries the entire album. On the other hand, it seems like the album is afraid to commit too much to one single genre and hops around. The lyrics are also a little cheesy and gimmicky. 5/10
It's alright. His voice is enjoyable and some of the tracks like "Dance Little Sister" and "If All You Get To Heaven" are some undoubtedly funky tunes. Overall not very memorable though, seems like a fairly above-average 80s album, not something you "must hear before dying".
Pretty unique and compelling R&B from the 80's! I'm not a huge fan of it but it's pretty good for what it's worth.
80s as hell. Reminds me a bit of Michael Bolton mixed with Prince. He's clearly a talented singer but definitely not my style.
Very 80s. The spotify bio describes the artist as a grittier Prince. I see that to a point. Dude's got a lovely voice. It should be noted that this artist now goes by Sananda Maitreya.
Alle de gode lyde. Funky, soul-y og masser af den søde søde blæs
2021.12.15 if you all get to heaven sign your name as yet untitled who’s loving you
I wonder if it's unfair to judge an album for sounding too much like the time during which it was made, but here we are... Some minor positive surprises among the tracks, but probably not much I feel like I need to hear a second time.
It's an alright album but have to give propts to Terence Trent D'Arby's vocals here. So lively and brilliant piece of soul, just unfortunate the production is very dated here and gets a bit annoying. I did like half the songs on here a lot actually but the remaining were skippable. Let's Go Forward and As Yet Untitled were the best songs here and can see why Wishing Well would've been a big hit.
It’s good, but some parts feel dated. Like he’s very talented, but there were only one or two songs that stuck out to me. Certainly sounds like it was monumental perhaps at the time, but now it’s a bit dated.
Some interesting instrumental moments and good lyrical content make for a mixed bag of enjoyable and skippable tracks. Can definitely see how this album helped pioneer RnB as we know it, not my cuppa tea. 6/10.
I vaguely remember this dude from when I was a kid, I don't recognise any of these songs though. It's pretty cool, bit of a Michael Jackson vibe going on. Rocking and funky at the same time, solid bit of 80s pop. 3/5.
"Wishing Well" sounded familiar. A good album to relax to!
Wishing Well, Let's Go Forward, Rain (зависит от настроения, вот это одна из дурацких песен, которые как пародии звучат, но в целом хоть внимание цепляет), Who's Loving You (кавер неплохо вышел) ни в какие вороты: Dance Little Sister (хватит плясать, пацаны, давайте поработайте что ли), As Yet Untitled (это вообще невыносимые стенания какие-то, ни одна песня такого рода не может быть оправдана) 6/10
Every song I thought I’d finally got the measure of the music (not quite MJ, not quite Prince…) but then in would roll another irresistible hook, and, well, it all ended up being rather undeniably its own thing.
Sounds like the 'best friends' medley on the soundtrack to an 80s movie. Standout tracks: Wishing Well, If You All Get to Heaven, Who's Loving You
It's an interesting mix of styles with an undoubtedly talented singer at the front. But the music is also completely forgettable and too synth-heavy and polished. It wasn't bad. But it didn't stand out as good either.
Very dated 80s R&B production but solid songs and performances.
soulful as hell not for me, but good
it was ok not my bag really
Not my cup of tea
If TTD had been working in the sixties, what amazing soul music we would have had. And whilst there are some great tracks on this album like Let Me Stay and Sign Your Name, you never quite feel the music showcases his voice the way it should - the production is a little synth heavy and artificial.
only knew the hit...interesting beyond that.
Was kinda like michael Jackson
‘Sign Your Name’ and ‘Wishing Well’ are the all-time classics they’re made out to be. ‘Dance Little Sister’ is also a great pop-funk number that both Prince and James Brown would’ve been proud to have written, and ‘Who’s Loving You’ is a worthy Smokey Robinson cover. And yet while it’s a solid enough debut effort overall, the rest of the album leaves me feeling a little cold, perhaps partly due to the late 80s synth heavy sound which makes the album sound somewhat dated to my ears.
Really fun album. Good listen. R+B meets pop.
Pleasant but not memorable, did save the first track tho. 7
Bit dated but his voice is undeniable and the singles still bang
Parts of this are pretty cool.
Not bad. Not great
This is a really interesting mashup of soul, funk, gospel, pop, and R&B. Start of the album is stronger than the end. Favorite songs are wishing well and If you all get to heaven. Reminds me of George Michael a little.
Real 80s flashback vibes
Is het niet mogelijk halve puntjhes te geven ;)?
A little hit and miss, but I like his voice and some of the tracks. Fav tracks: sign your name/as yet untitled
I like how it starts with a gospel vibe and then takes off in a million different directions before the first song ends. I was surprised to see how many musicians play on this. With it's being a first album one would think they would make do with just one drummer/ percussionist rather than the four listed. I see they also have a brother who plays the sinubla - whatever the fuck that is. The production is really quite amazing. His laughing in Wishing Well is a miracle of production technology. Ditto for the other shouts and talking (in that tune and others) that are made to sound like he backed up from the mic. The LP started to wear on me after 5 / 6 songs. Perhaps a little too fastidious for too long.
Taitavaa musisointia ja laulamista. Tasaisen hyvä hienosti tehty levy, mutta henkilökohtaisesti ne korkeat valot jäi puuttumaan. Siksi 3,5 kääntyy nyt 3.
Great pop album & voice
This was solid, if not too religious. Kinda weird at some points for sure
Soul. Una canción conocida.
A mix of Stevie Wonder, Prince, MJ. Overall I liked the album. Not bad!
Interesting, wasnt in the mood for genre, similar to Prince.
A weird album. The artist clearly has talent and there are some great funky rhythms going on here, but it's mixed with completely bizarre songs like his interpretation of the "rain, rain, go away" children's song. The album's worth a listen for the curious, but somebody looking for something to enjoy listening to can skip straight to the singles.
ja gut, kann man machen. 3
This is his first album. It went platinum in like three days in the UK. Reminds me a lot of Michael Jackson. Really good album!
Me gustó en general aunque se hace largo al final.
7/10
Nice sound, some unmemorable
Classic soulful love songs. Great voice, reminds me of Jackson.
Had no idea Wishing Well was by Trent.
Täysin uusi tuttavuus itselleni. Näköjään Suomessakin tätä levyä on myyty kultalevyn arvoisesti eli ilmeisesti jotain aukkoja on omassa sivistyksessäni.
Eh.
Wishing well kiss and tell💋
i liked it! "seven more days", "let's go forward", & "sign your name" are nice.
The whole thing reeks of a poor man's Prince. That's not to say that it's bad, but it does feel sort of like an imitation. There are some tracks that are really good, but it just isn't consistent. There are also a lot of tracks that I really don't like. Overall it's 'Meh.'. There are some redeeming qualities, but if I want to listen to Prince I'll just go listen to Prince.
Different sound. Occasionally made me hate the 80s less 😅 I didn’t like the album opener (if you all get to heaven). Sananda starts cooking after. Wishing Well and As Yet Untitled were my favorites. Wished I liked this more because Sanandas story is fantastic. Somewhere around 2.5
Недопринс недомайкл
He sings good. But man, I just couldn’t get into this. Maybe not my style or taste so I tried to put that aside but just felt a little generic. I think I recognized wishing well and prob the best song in my opinion. 2.5
Very 80’s sounding and not my favorite. Not awful, just sounded very dated and meh. 2.25/5
meh nothing on this one really stood out to me. More of a 2.5 star rating for me
10-year-old me didn’t like Sign Your Name when it was released. Today, I think it’s by far the best song on the album. But I still don’t like it that much. Obviously he is a talented singer, and there might be a good album buried behind the very 80s production, but I just can’t hear it right now. Wish there were more songs like the final track, with a little more soul to it
Background music
nothing for my playlist but - I'll never turn my back on you and - seven more days were fun to listen to also didn't like as yet untitled but the switch to the last track was cool
Me: Can we have some Michael Jackson? Mom: We've got Michael Jackson at home. Michael Jackson at Home: Terence Trent D'Arby This album is so derivative and just sounds dated at this point. Reading about his comments - nothing here is remotely comparable to Michael Jackson's or Prince's output in the same time frame. The best song is 'As Yet Untitled', really shows off what a nice voice he has. Next up: Sign O The Times by Prince. Came out the same year and feels like a way better and more timeless album.
Would you like to dance, ✨️ℊ𝓇𝒶𝓃𝒹𝓂ℴ𝓉𝒽ℯ𝓇✨️
★★½
I enjoyed a few tracks here (and surprisingly knew a couple from before), but I thought this was overall outdated and fairly plain. It's not bad, but it's also not something I plan to come back to.
A lot more interesting than I anticipated- especially considering when this was originally released
The guy can sing, but the 80s production has not stood the test of time.
I enjoyed some of it, but a lot of it was so corny. Someone needs to study why the 80's were so corny. Case-in-point the track titled "Rain"
Denna typ av soul funkar verkligen inte för mig. Är ledsen. Tvåa eftersom jag fattar att det inte är dåligt egentligen.
Not music for me, too gospelly
Just hootin and hollerin the whole time man
Mejor de lo que esperaba. Estuvo bastante bien.
I'M TRYNA FUCK
definite michael jackson inspo rain rain go away
Holy 80's Batman. This is what I mean when I say 80's music isn't for me. 3/10
4/10
There were time when I thought this would be fun to see live and you could tell there was a charasma about the man but then there were other times when I was waiting for it to be over or tuning it out so how do you balance that out? Probably won’t seek it out again.
'Wishing Well' is a great single even with the awful 1980's production & 'Dance Little Sister' is lots of fun but that's pretty much it as far as highlights. It's not an awful album by any means but by God it's a boring one & sometimes that's worse. Another WTF is this album doing on here moment brought to you by the bipolar 1001 Albums list.
No thank you. It’s just such drivel.
Hated it when it came out. Affected and posey. Not changed my mind much since. Pushing it to give it a 2 because he tried hard
Listened Before? N I remember Wishing Well from the 80s... yep. Thats about it. This wasn't memorable for me. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Wishing Well
Music production in the 80s was genuinely abysmal what were they thinking
Eh
"Say a prayer for my camel / As I ride through the desert" ...? 80s funk pop/rock. Not awful but definitely not my cup of tea. "Dated" is spot on.
Every song feels like the end credits to any Disney movie between Oliver and Company and Hunchback of Notre Dame. Which is neither a dig nor a compliment.
Sounds like it was made in a funko pop plant. Just so plastic!
É aquela musica
Hmm
It's quit good so far. Has great vocals and songs, some more to my liking than others, have interesting shifts to them. In my opinion there is not enough variation in energy. He's pushing very hard almost all the time. And while there are this interesting shifts in some songs, I can't say it's a harmonic or melodic masterclass. Good arrangements though... Let's go Forward is my favorite song so far. Very good composition. Rain my least favorite, not a good song. As yet untitled is a very special track. Resonates. Last track is a banger. I don't really know why, but this album left me feeling a bit bad. It's probably because of the bad day I was Having yesterday, but still. I'll give it a high 2. Still appreciate the good tracks and talent but my mind isn't there.
Very 80s production very wacko jack lite
Not as 80 awful as I expected (or vaguely remembered). Still, it's a 2 from me.
