Reviews (page 5 of 9)
First entire New Order album I've ever listened to.
Like it so far
Solid! Roots of early NIN, obvs.
I liked the album overall but “Elegia” pushed it to 4 stars!
Liked it, but maybe needs another 2-3 listens. Subculture and This Time of Night were best.
Big fan of this album.
I enjoyed it a lot. I don't really listen to a lot of synth-pop, but this album, especially the second half sounded epic. Will definitely be turning it on for some laid-back listens. Favorite songs: Sunrise, Elegia, 6/8.
Liked it a lot but not really music to listen to at work. I like Joy Division and I can hear their roots sometimes
Faktisk udmærket Brit-pop. Kunne egentlig godt blive ret fedt at høre på, men ørene mangler erfaring. Flere gode numre. Den får 4 fremskrivende stjerner
Good-to-great. The original vocals on Sub-culture are so off-melody though - the remix cleans that up, at least. Sunrise/Elegia are the real highlights here.
7/10
great. real 80s sounding stuff
Actually really enjoyed most of it. A couple of songs sounded like horrible karaoke, but most were pretty good
5/10
A bit inconsistent not my vibe. 8.6/10
Good album! Not a big fan of this genre but i know why its very enjoyed around the population! Very vibey and very dancey! Huge respect to the goths out there!
A whiny, weak and wimpy voice lets this down. I really wanted to rate this higher but however many times I listened just couldn't get past that voice. On some tracks, like the latter half of 'Sunrise' especially, the vocals were so indistinct that I could only just about hear his voice let alone discern the lyrics. Bad production? Others were often off-key and 'Face Up' was positively painful to hear. Give me a good vocalist and these songs would have been so much better as the backing tracks were all pretty good. Someone like Neil Tennant would do these justice. This doesn't sound like the same man who sang on the 'Blue Monday' classic. He actually appears to sing in tune on that one! I also had high hopes for the only instrumental -' Elegia' - but it started off as if it was going to build into something good but then just fizzled out. The whole album could have been great but ended up sounding like a weak cover version of the real thing and a frustrating listening experience in all.
Forgot to write review as I listened! This album was good - dirty, grimy synth pop. Elegia was a very lovely highlight for me. Just not sure I would listen again.
3/5 - I may not be a fan of this type of genre. This album was hovering around 2/5 until Elegia which I've heard and loved before as it reminds me of Chrono Trigger's soundtrack. Overall this is an OK album that I understand why people like but it just sits kind of average to me.
Yeah it’s good, a lot of fun, maybe a bit samey at times and feels like a lot of songs where new order are trying to bottle magic but keep leaving the lid off. Best song: Sooner Than You Think 3.8/5.0
It is OK, it's maybe their 4th best album. It starts strong with Love Vigilantes, but then it becomes pretty boring pretty quickly
It was better than I thought it was going to be but it was still that 80s sound I don't like - casio keyboard presets and a singer who can't sing
Me gusto, siento que vario un poco entre disco y y otras cosas, tenia buenos temas de la nada, y el resto normies pero bien.
Look. I’m like 900 albums in. I’m tired, boss.
Alright
Mycket synt, cool 80-tals vibb.
This is what I wished all discos sound like. It's softer round the edges and lacks some of the hooks of Joy Division but has its own identity. It's gloomy, moody but with an odd skip in it's step - a bit like The Cure. Whilst it didn't really have any stand-out songs the album as a whole works really well. Except 'Sub-culture' which sounds clumsy and amateur.
First and last track real good
3.5 a solid album with no major stand outs for me.
couple funky tunes
Hmm, I'm not sure how I feel about new order. I do quite like it, there's just that 80s synth sound that I don't get on with as a rule that holds it back for me...... That's probably the reason people like it in fairness. The opening tracks were the best. Still going 3.5, but on the 3 side
Had some really strong spots for me then some really meh spots. Overall I liked the sound.
ITS NEW ORDER TIME! yet this album bought me down. it just sounds so… generic instead of sounding very “new order”. i’m sorry peter and bernard, but today is not the day that you’re receiving a score above 4. 3.5/5
Not too bad of an album, actually pretty alright. It sounds like something that they would play on the classic rock radio. Overall, it was fine leaving it in the background while I was doing other things.
If every song on this album was as good as the songs that bookend it, I would give it a five. But since they're not...3.76
Despite a couple of clunkers, overall this is an enjoyable listen of a band w its own sense of style and beats. But it doesn’t transcend beyond enjoyable…
Great grooves and riffs, but some of these songs are just too long I'm sorry. Favourites: Love Vigilantes, Sunrise, Elegia
Some really thrilling ideas every now and then but it rarely came together how I wanted it to.
501/1089 - Better than Technique but only because two songs had some parts that kinda sound like the Cure.
I was never a real New Order fan back in the day, but they are an undeniably important band from the 80s and I respect everything they did.
it’s ok? why is it on this list?
Fell off like halfway through then I just got kinda bored
It's got a lot of elements I like, but man, it's still that 80's sound that hits me weird sometimes. Started listening to the album as some background music during while getting ready for the day. Halfway through I put on headphones and i did like it a little more... But not enough to give it more than a three.
Prefer iron and wine's cover of the opening track. Liked this more than I thought I would. To be fair I thought I would hate this.
Fine enough synthy 80’s dance album that has some decent tracks and doesn’t overstay its welcome. The singing is a bit all over the board. 3/5
The singing on this is just terrible, I can’t get down with it. The music is great, for that new wave sound it’s probably right up there with some of the best, but how did a band with a singer that can’t sing make it this big? It can’t be a purposeful style to sing this badly.
-my first full New Order album. i definitely prefer Joy Division but this is great! for sure a standout among the 80s new wave i’ve heard, which makes since because it is New Order -would love to hear some more variety from them, i’m not sure how similar all their songs are -Favorites: Love Vigilantes, Sub-culture
I'm not crazy about the typical 80s sound with the chorus effect on the guitars, gated snares, synths, etc. Also I don't really like dance music. Other than that, it's not a bad album. The vocals could have been better maybe.
= the Beatles
classic new wave
Very strong
Good a little too synthetic and non dimensional for me
Kinda nice...
Sunrise + Elegia was a great sequence. The rest was pretty good.
Ihan jees. 3/5.
Meh, I generally like new wave but this album just wasn’t super interesting to me. I’ve liked some New Order that I’ve listened to, but this wasn’t my favorite.
Pop, Rock, 1985 -> 3
It all sounds very much like Blue Monday.
For some reason, I thought this was going to be more electronica than synth-pop. I kinda dig it.
This was a pleasant background listen. Sounded very much like early 80's new wave but nothing stood out as a classic song.
3.25 - A few songs in had me thinking this was a four star banger, but there were some lulls later in the album that brought the rating down a bit.
Nice little party in my phonehead. Tight, playful tracks that never let up. It's got this confident vibe without being arrogant. I could see this soundtracking a late-night dance-off or a road trip with friends. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Love Vigilantes - The Perfect Kiss - Elegia
Enjoyed this one quite a lot more than I expected to as I'm not normally big on synth-heavy music. But this was artfully done and with some enjoyable beats.
Ok, another 1980s British synthpop album appears! At least this band is actually decently known! Anyway, this album sounds almost exactly like I expected it to. While there are some quite engaging rhythms and guitar in addition to the synths and hooky songs, it mostly just sounds like all the list's other 80s pop albums. The vocalist especially is insanely generic, and so are the lyrics for the most part. The history of this band is probably why they're better known than most of the era's bands, as there's little difference in quality between this and, say, Soft Cell. I don't even think this is their most popular album, so I genuinely have no idea why it was included. Oh, wait, it's 1980s British synthpop, that's why.
Token new wave. Synth sins. Meh
I useta lump Blancmange, Depeche Mode and New Order into a bin of synth-pop bands that don’t really do much for me. Then Depeche Mode came up with VIOLATOR (1990) — which I loved — and last year I picked up an old Blancmange album on vinyl and liked it more than I expected. Given that, and my fond memories of New Order from friends’ mix-tapes and 80s alternative playlists, I was looking forward to this one. But LOW-LIFE doesn’t really add up to an album for me. It’s basically three great tracks (“Love Vigilantes,” “The Perfect Kiss” and “Elegia”) paired with 5 other OK songs. And taken as a whole this all just sounds too similar on a song-structure level from one track to the next. Too drony and repetitive and icily slick. Overall, disappointingly, these eight tracks just left me cold. 2.5 stars
Not the 80s vibe I was into. Interesting how the bass guitar is the lead, vocals not polished.
Not too shabby. I've listened to very little Joy Division/New Order and I expected this to be darker, but it was a lot dancier than I was thinking it'd be. I can see where a lot of later bands pulled inspiration from this.
Yeah this was exactly what I expected from this band. Not really surprising therefore, but pretty nice to listen to overall. It lacked a bit of variety but overall it was a good listen. 3/5
average good
Solid album. 3.25/5
A little bit of the Cure, a little bit of Depeche Mode. It’s not my thing but I can dig it.
Easy listening
This album will be over Sooner Than You Think. May leave you Face Up towards the Sunrise.
classic 80s synth pop
A couple of interesting electronica bits and then a lot of quite generic 80s pop. Definitely didn't feel as fresh/interesting/different as the Joy Division stuff to me.
Not bad electronic music but didn't find anything too stand out
3/26 Not bad
Good music but wow Sumner's voice is hit or miss
More upbeat than I expected. I think of New Order as doom and gloom emo music. Not exactly full of sunshine and rainbows, but energetic at least. They’re growing on me as a result of this project!
Songs I liked: - Sunrise - Love Vigilantes - Elegia Very moody, but some of it felt too soft to me. I liked it all in all.
Some great songs on here but has to be rated a 3 against the masterpiece that is Power Corruption & Lies.
Mér finnst að ég ætti að fíla þetta betur en ég geri, þarna eru element sem ég kann við, en heildin er ekki að heilla mig. Dreg þetta kannski ekki í tvist, en eigum við að segja að þetta sé solid 2,7?
Tosi modernin kuuloista levyksi mikä on tullut 85. Tykkäsin, paljon rokimpaa kuin mitä odotin. Elegia kanssa hieno instrumentaali välisoitto mitä tän iän levyissä ei nyt yleensä ole. Parhaat: Love Vigilants, Elegia
I enjoy the more instrumental songs, but not the more vocal ones. Frog samples were interesting
Not the best New Order Album, but OK.
Not for me. Didn't love the singer's vocal tone and the songs were too similar for me.
Brought me down a Joy Division rabbit hole, that was fun
His voice is very generic british 80s pop, however the synth does sound great. Elegia is really a cool song.
This reminded me of the cure a lot but they don’t do anything that special for me. Elegia was great tho I liked that one
It was ok probably just a three it's not offensive but it's not joy division
Now, hey! This is pretty solid. Very Smiths-esque, like a lot of entries on this list. I had no idea the Smiths had such an "imitated" style before starting the project, but there you go. It's a very distinct 80s-British sound, and it can be pretty hit-or-miss. The spacey, echoey 80s production can get pretty stale for a lot of people (myself included!). But New Order does something that few others do: they make the music reasonably catchy. Love Vigilantes? Groovy as heck. The Perfect Kiss? Damn catchy. But problems start to arise when the band compromises songwriting, memorability, and musical hooks for the sake of... atmosphere(?) and track length(?). Beginning with This Time of Night – the weakest track on the album – the quality gets a bit sketchier, and you really begin to feel the length of some of the tracks. Sunrise, though very exciting and packed with space-rock-esque guitars, goes on a little too long (without changing texture a single time) for comfort. The percussion is all over the place in The Perfect Kiss. Kind of a "fluttery" atmosphere. I haven't really heard anything else like it. This song is solid. Elegia stands out as the mellow-yet-weighty album centrepiece, the eye of the storm between Sunrise and Sooner Than You Think. (As an aside: what happened to instrumentals being the length of full songs? This slaps.) It's a relief to not have to hear Sumner's vocals for five minutes. They're fairly weak. Luckily they're quite low-energy in the song Sub-culture, which shines as a result. That track also uses the circle of fifths in its chord progression, which is always a win. 3/5 Key tracks: Love Vigilantes, Elegia
Should be 2.5 stars. Not a bad album but a definite step down from '83's Power, Corruption and Lies. As on 'Movement," N.O. sounds so unsure of its next move that it can't focus on the move it's making here.
The sense of separation from JD is probably complete here. The album is good, has some strong elements but fails to provide anything to set the band apart from others. There are echoes of the Cure, Depeche Mode. The vocals are a weak point, when on point it feels 'in tune' but more often it is not. The rhythm section does not disappoint while some of the synthesizer frills are awful.
I probably would like this album a lot more if it wasn't for his vocals little bit i don't know why a bit but there are a couple of good tracks, one of them being an instrumental. The opener "Love Vigilantes" is really a great track. "Sunrise" almost captures that spirit, but again the vocals drew it back. But the biggest standout track to me was Elegia", written as a tribute to Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis. It's a very emotional instrumental piece. It was featured prominently and *Pretty in Pink*, and featured prominently on the John Hughes mix CD box set "Life Moves Pretty Fast". It actually comes from a longer 17 minute piece which I've never heard in whole I need to check that out at some point. Honestly most of the music I liked it was mainly the vocals that just keep it from what could possibly be a strong four star album. (7.55) ★★★½
"Love Vigilantes" is an awesome song, but nothing quite matches the magic of the opening track. It's not all bad, but it feels a little bit like a let down after that. "Sunrise" is probably the song that comes closest to matching it. 3.5 stars.
At first, I thought this was just more uninteresting 80s synth pop. But the band name rang a bell. The music sounds a bit like The Cure and Sisters of Mercy, only less interesting. The exception is the track Elegia, of which there is also supposed to be a 17' version. I quite enjoyed listening to this album, but I won't be doing so again anytime soon. 3/5
The mid 80's had a lot of sounds I identify as "The Sounds of the 80's". Some bands were ahead of their times, like Bowie. Others were throwbacks like Ska and Rockabilly. This effectively ports me back to a certain time and place in 1986, mostly. Time travel does exist, in the vinyl between the tracks on this album. That said, if you don't go for this vocal style, it can be a hard album to listen to all the way through.
Not a bad album. I never went out of my way to listen to new order back in the day other than the odd track. I think some tracks sound of their time but some are inspired. Well worth a listen
No review, I was too busy at work
As emotional as the lyrics sometimes are, the style of music is just a bit too aloof for me to form a true attachment to it.
Arvet från Joy division är tydligt. Samtidigt är ju New order definitivt något annat.
Great synth pop record, with music just as interesting and engaging as the Joy Division years. It is certainly a popier album, especially on the vocals so it feels like this band forever remains in the shadow of what it was before, but still quite enjoyable.
New Order are a strange band. The singer is terrible, the lyrics are often worse. The production also often sounds horrible. But they still regularly produce great songs that rise above it.
Not their best.
The most 80s music to ever exist
Not bad, but a pretty middling 80s sound. Not much grabbed me here, but it’s not a bad listen.
I respect new order much more than I like hearing them (Peter Hook especially is incredible). There’s good songs in there but the production just sounds ugly. I can’t give a band with such influence lower than a three though.
Their third album. Post Punk / New Wave. Musically I love this album. It sounds fantastic. Unfortunately, like many others, I can't get past Bernard's vocals. He's off key enough to take me out of the album. There is a moment on each track where I wince. A decent album but could have been much more.
Liked Love Vigilantes a lot and also Elegia and Sunrise were good. 3 of the 8 tracks were god awful
It was okay. I think I knew some of these songs from advertising.
I’m a sucker for synths, pretty melodies and lush arrangements and this album is flush with them. It’s very dated, but still slaps.
Nice mixture of their early stuff with dance vibes.
It’s ight
Surprised this is here. Not their best, for me, even if it is a really good album. Among their best artwork, though, if you get the original vinyl.
Many songs are really catchy and it’s a good example of a post-punk, poppy album. But it’s nothing I would listen to on a daily base. Maybe I’ll start listening to this genre more, thanks to this album.
super cool production. awesome synths and melodies. the guys voice? ehhhh. sounded like he recorded the songs acapella at the end of the day because he wanted to go home. kinda took me out of a few songs. after a while i got used to it but something about this album just made him sing not the best. 6/10
7/10
Elegia me gustó, por las demás no están mal.
Well well well. I know *about* this crew. I know the origin story. And I found that famous album from their previous iteration to be an absolute chore to even finish. I was not enthusiastic about this record & was not expecting much. And I found those expectations to be completely unfounded. This was not bad at all & in fact was pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good. That geedee 80s synth sheen is such a turn off & drags the whole thing down. But not so much as to ruin the experience. Low-Life, good times. Tres estrellas
I ended up listening to this three times and still not really feeling like I got much from it.
Never heard this before. Very jangly and lofi, but quite good.
Enjoyed this with Sunrise and Elegia being the standouts. The bass always the highlight or New Order, the vocals especially when he really tries to strain and sing is pretty rough though.
Not really my thing. The 2 songs they played on the radio I did not even know the names of. OK I guess.
The synth was kind of nice, but somewhat forgettable to me.
Good
its ok
They love their double clap on 4. Why does the belting on the last song sound out of key?
I think that New Order work better as a singles band as their other material doesn’t quite hit and their sound is a bit dated. It’s at its best when Hooky’s bass is to the fore and this works well with the synths, as well as providing the strongest link to Joy Division. I have never been sure about Bernard Sumner’s vocals and there are various points here where it is does grate a bit. Not bad but not amazing.
I’ll forgive Sumners vocal performance as, for obvious reasons, he never really expected to be a lead singer. This had some decent moments (‘sunrise’) but doesn’t have the same killer songs like ‘substance’ does. I do like Hooks bass style and that combined with the synths used make it sound distinctively ‘new order’ but it’s unlikely to be an album of theirs I’ll revisit any time soon.
[shruggie emoji]
3.3/3.4 it was good but eh
I LIKED SOME OF THE SYNTH STUFF
Okay, it felt a bit played out and cringe by the end
Okay, so I'm much more familiar with Joy Division than New Order, and I still think I enjoy Joy Division more, but this was really good. Sunrise stood out.
Me gustaría puntuarlo más alto pero está difícil. Le falta punch
No. 349/1001 Love Vigilantes 3/5 The Perfect Kiss 4/5 This Time of Night 3/5 Sunrise 2/5 Elegia 4/5 Sooner Than You Think 3/5 Sub-culture 3/5 Face Up 3/5 Average: 3,13 Elegia was a really cool track. Aside from that some songs i liked, some I didn't really like. But overall better than expected.
Decent album! Not my top choice but liked it a lot more than I thought I would
bang average imo
Used to listen to New Order all the time min 80s. Brings back memories but does now not excite as it used to.
A reliably fun album from New Order, if one that lacks the heights of the band's best albums. The album starts and ends really well. "Love Vigilantes" has a cool synth that kind of sounds like a harmonica, and "The Perfect Kiss" is a lovely tribute to Ian Curtis. The closer has a fun bouncy synth that really pops. But the middle of the album drags, sticking too closely to similar sounds and lacking memorable riffs or highlights. It's also very loud; with the exception of "Elegia," which doesn't go anywhere and feels like an interlude, it's one big beat after another. A slower or more subdued track would potentially help make the middle seem less anonymous. The lyrics don't add much and are a bit clumsy, as is typical for the band, with the lowlight being the laughable "pleasure zone" line. A good album, but the band has a couple better ones.
Mostly mid (mid-1980's at least!), but the B1 instrumental track is awesome, and sounds 10 years ahead of the rest of the tracks
Good background music. I like the sound. Retro/Nostalgia for sure! Hello 80s. dance clubs and the art scene in college.
Not my bag
3.5
Pretty good. Enjoyable listening
5/10
It’s fun, pop-tinged new wave that doesn’t sound like a dirge for a change. It’s also quite overrated, and can we please acknowledge that Bernard Sumner is always slightly off-key, driving me slightly batty?
A distinctive sound but not one that has' aged terribly well. Vocals particularly poor really. That single - not on this album - Blue Monday is fabulous. But this album doesn't deliver that level of quality unfortunately.
New Order strikes a delicate balance between danceability and darkness with this album. All tracks are solid but brought down significantly by pretty poor vocals. Elegia steals the show as a beautiful tribute to Ian Curtis. With Curtis on my mind, I can't help but think that although New Order is good, Joy Division edges them out by a significant margin.
Had no complaints, but no song on this album popped out to me.
Perfect background music, by which I mean it loses my interest quickly but it's good enough to keep going while I focus on other things. Elegia is top notch though.
Infectious 80s earworm pop with a bit a danger to it, not much, but it's there. Love Vigilante is one of those road weary laments that I tend to dread but it seemed very authentic in him missing his family. They have a nice groove. Face Up was good song some nice motivational lyrics. This is just kind of there though. Neither good nor bad. Just there. 3 I don't like the overlay of New over Order on the cover. I find it to off putting. Ordheeiw is the name of the band apparently.
It's solid but doesn't really stand out to me.
Not listened to much New Order previously - much as I imagined. Good balance of synth and rock with some nice instrumentals too but not as anthemic as I tend to like.
Upbeat synth dance rock for sad bois? It's tight, it's bright, got some great hooks while feeling a little detached and emotionally bruised - I think I dig it! 3/5 that could grow into a 4. "Grower not a shower", if you will
esta bueno, me recuerda a the cure jejeje
Pretty alright. Probably won't listen again and it all kinda bled together but it wasn't bad.
typical 80s
It was chill but not my type of music
6/10 the first half of the album was cool but the last two songs were a rough listen
Never heard this one before. Decent
Elegia is a stunning standout
Not for me
Great midpoint album in the band's career. The synth dance is clearer than ever but still driven by Hooky's brilliant atmospheric bass lines.
Ok New Wave...nothing offensive but nothing exciting
Lots of creativity here, and a few solid tracks, but the vocals are pretty bad and it feels a little dated. Enjoyable enough, but I can't imagine being in a mood where I wouldn't prefer to listen to Depeche Mode.
( My notes weren't saved :( ) I wasn't very into the first half of the album, mainly because of the vocals. "Elegia" was a high point of the album, very different from the rest and fully instrumental. Even though "Sooner than you think" and "Sub-Culture" had vocals again, they seemed to fit in those songs much better than the earlier ones. I remember "Sub-Culture" being sorta weird but in a good way. Unfortunately, the last song fell back into the same pitfalls as the first half. But to be clear, even the songs that I didn't like as much weren't that bad, some of them still had very nice instrumentals, and the vocals, while not to my taste, weren't horribly off-putting, so I'm giving this 3/5
Low-Life didn’t leave as strong an impression on me as Power, Corruption & Lies, which I still prefer. Bernard Sumner’s vocals aren’t really my thing, but they feel like part of New Order’s character.
I've always thought that New Order is very similar to Joy Division in style. Okay, so now I'm 31 and I'm figuring out that it's basically one group, but without the lead singer Ian Curtis. Very solid piece of music, not my favorite album though. I love electronic and pop sound.
Was definitely a fan of the instrumentation and catchy melodies but man the vocals were really hard for me to get over
82
"Elegia" - clocked it immediately from Pretty in Pink, had to look up to verify and learned the beautiful story about it's origin and meaning (tribute to Ian Curtis from Joy Division). Nice album, only song other than Elegia that I even somewhat recognized was Love Vigilantes. I wasn't cool enough to listen to New Order when they came out because I was too damn concerned with blending in. Even with my passing knowledge of NO, definitely would be able to identify the band as soon as the album started playing.
Easy listen. Dips a little in the middle energy wise, but overall a snapshot of its time.
Alright
got the signature new Order sound. Bernard is still getting to grips with being a vocalist by the sounds of some of the tracks
Cool but also not great
some very good parts, some very meh parts. Generally good for background-music.
Just not into the 80's aesthetic really.
Pretty good! You can definitely hear the mid-'80s of it, and honestly I didn't like the singer's voice that much, but it was pretty good anyway.
It was interesting. I liked some of the songs but a lot of them felt dated. This is the type of music my parents would've listened to when they were my age, and it's interesting to think about it from their perspective.
Sunrise 👍🏻 Rest of album… not my favorite New Order.
Decent enough - I thought that musically it was pretty interesting and maybe marred a bit by a vocal performance that just didn't quite work for me.
Didn’t listen to it fully but I like it
Quick review this as I’m away on holiday. Listened to the album on way to destination on CarPlay along with Christmas carols playlist. Which did I enjoy most? Well only 8 days to the big day when I hope Santa has not left this album in my stocking. Whilst I do like quite a few New Order songs I am still bewildered how they morphed from a unique and valued band like Joy Division into an electro dance band. Seems that millions did appreciate this radical change of direction but very much like Peter Hook I sought pastures new. 3/5 17/12/25
The leaning into the new wave elements in this album works a lot better than what similar post-punk bands achieve. His voice matches the sound of the instrumentation, but this album is not really that special.
sin más
Love Vigilantes is a classic. Later songs on the album were good but didn't grab me as firmly. I'm surprised how much their sound was like The Cure in this album, it's not what I think of for New Order. It's like, but I'm not in love. Low 3, up from 2 mostly because of my enjoyment of The Cure.
Some stuff by New Order / Joy Division is quite good, and some is crap. This one sounds like a merge of The Cure and the older New Order stuff. Not bad, but nothing overwhelming.
I like it.. need it give it another go. Could be a four star album.
Unknown band for me. Not a bad sound. Good album.
Is this the cure? Or are the cure new order? 🧐
I really want to love New Order. I love Joy Division. I love post-punk, new wave, and electronic. Yet, they don’t really do it for me.
Some great vibes here
Meh
IT WAS FIRE I LOVE JAZZ
You can definitely tell it was made in the eighties. This album would be make a great soundtrack for a feel good movie.
Disjointed track by track but some solid tunes
This is a really nice album
Not something I’d put on regularly but fun once in a while. I have a feeling that if I’d been a New Order guy already I’d be all over this but listening now it doesn’t really move me.
Dette albumet var ikke så kult. Andre sanger fra de myyyye kulere
The was better than the other New Order album I listened to. I knew Elegia.
these songs are pretty good but long overstay their welcome. if you cut a minute and a half off of each and added two or three more songs to make up the difference and this could be a four or five star album. as it stands, i struggled to stay engaged.
Pleasant 80s rock. I like the 2 songs with the synth sounds.
This album is very 80's
Solid 80s
Meh. A 3.
This feels like the kind of album that requires a couple listens for it to really grow on you
I appreciate the historical context of it but it’s not necessarily my thing. A few songs stood out for me but the album as a whole was just ok.
This album didn't really do anything for me. Not bad, but didn't add much to my life.
It's pretty good! Extremely 80s. Elegia was the only stand out track to me, and I don't think that it's a coincidence that it's the only track without vocals.
I liked it more than I expected to. It's hard not to just constantly compare it to Joy Division and find it wanting, but on it's own merits it's a surprisingly upbeat, synth-y, post-punk jam. The lyrics can bleed into self-parody, but there's some real emotion there and it's interesting to hear them try and move past the moody downbeats into something more varied. It still feels more like a transition piece, it's not going to make it into my rotation, but solid stuff of an era. The cover is... boring, just not much of interest, I can respect the simplicity, it's a 2/5.
Sub par New order album I think “Elegia” is magically but “sub-culture” feels wrong.
Ihan kiva ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ihan kivaa tavaraa!
I think I left same review for a different new order album, but every song made me think of 'temptation', which isn't on this album. Good synth wave if you're into that.
#194/1001. It took three albums for New Order to emerge from the legacy of Joy Division and the blend into the by then ubiquitous sound of the 80s. There are signs of the massive hits which will fill the dance floors all around the world 30 years later, but still for me this album is sort of between.
Not a New Order fan. Their music constantly leaves more to be desired. I liked The Perfect Kiss and Sunrise, but the other songs were meh. Not a bad album, but it feels too sparse and unengaging.
A fine listen. It's got heavy synth and sampler inclusion, very indicative of the time and establishing a bit of a dark tone. Vocals aren't the strong suit here, however, and seem to take a backseat to the collective efforts of the rest of the group.
Для своего время, думается, то, что нужно. В наше время слушается довольно старомодно. Лучшая песня: Elegia
80’s bangers
Love Vigilantes et Sunrise mes préférées. Elegia bonne aussi dans son style. Les 3 dernières sont moins solides toutefois et on fait baisser la cote. 3,5/5
Torn between whether I actually like this or not. I think it’s ok, I think it’s likely inspired a lot of much better music.
Liked it better than I figured I would. Love the bass player
Pretty standard 80s fare
Haven’t heard this New Order album, not my favorite tracks
Good
This one is alright. Aside from Sunrise surprisingly sound intense, and some of the tracks being catchy. The rest of the album just didn't grab for me.
Okay
People are going to hate this take but the vocals drag the whole thing down. The instrumental work does the heavy lifting. "The Perfect Kiss" has that almost Boney M Rasputin groove and it actually goes hard. "Sunrise" is the obvious highlight with clean, memorable guitar work that sticks. "Sub Culture" is a mess. The vocals sound half asleep and the backing track doesn’t bother to wake them up. The whole thing just lies there. "Face Up" is even worse. The vocals are straight up out of tune and I genuinely don’t understand how people rate it that high. That track alone drops the whole album another point for me. The album has real sparks of brilliance and plenty of ideas worth taking notes on, but those eighties vocals feel lazy and end up holding everything back. Solid record that never fully lands. 7/10.
An interesting little 80’s album that makes good use of synth. I can see the appeal.
Good but feel like ya had to be there at the time to truly appreciate it
Love the instrumentals more than the vocals.
I enjoyed this album surprisingly- I loved Joy Division, but never got into NO. Decent listen
Not one of my favourite New Order albums although many acclaim it as one of their best
Eh
Not one of their best - specifically lyrically - but still damn great. 3.5
LOVE VIGILANTES kicks off this album quite nicely. Plus, we got frog sounds in THE PERFECT KISS. Quality addition of frog sounds!
This was fine
I don’t know how I never caught this before, but listening to this record made me realize just how much New Order and The Cure were fighting over the same territory. The first two songs here are quintessential New Order- but then right in the middle are a couple of excellent Cure songs. I enjoyed this one. Sumner can't sing much, but he means it. One issue here is that with a couple of the tracks, the layers get so thick it's a bit too much, especially percussively. Otherwise this is some nice, tortured electronic dance music. THREE STARS
Pretty inoffensive stuff. I enjoyed it well enough, but I'm not floored. Perhaps not what I would have expected out of ex. Joy Division?
Good album, all pretty good songs nothing terrible
I'd like to give this another listen. Maybe it'll move to 4.
Tinny toe tapping in a drizzle.
Traditional Rock Band, fun stuff but nothing crazy. 5.6/10
Standouts Sunrise Elegia
New wave sometimes is great and other times is not so great. I'm split on where this album falls on the scale, but I can say that albeit dated and uniquely new wave it goes pretty hard at times. I found myself a bit taken by the grooves and melodies. Vocals are so over reverved that I wish they weren't even there. But alas, they complimented the sound which I Sonically pleasant and definitely a wall of sound at times, tinges of psychedelic motifs in the bridges and verses. But it kinda just didn't excite or dazzle me like I wanted it to. New order has that banger "Blue Monday" which I'm sad to not see on this albo. I'll give it a three. Not a tastemakers choice nor a pop phenomenon, dare I say run of the mill.
Perfectly understand how there could be lovers and 5/5s for this album, i absolutely love the sound.... For some reason it really just didnt click for me on my first listen, could very easily revisit and think otherwise. 3/5
Was never particularly of a fan of New Order growing up, so much so that I didn't bother with Joy Division for a long time. Some intense listening later and I'm now a big fan of Joy Division but New Order still largely elude me. Sure, they have some undoubtedly great and classic songs and there's some good ones on this album but over the course of the whole album, it's just ok, rather than the greatness we hear in _Unknown Pleasures_ and _Closer_. They lost something both literally and figuratively when Ian Curtis passed and its not just his vocals, although that is certainly a weakness here.
This album is fine. I've never been much of a fan of New Order, and I completely get why others do. I'm more tolerant of wonky vocals in genres that are more in my wheelhouse and would likely be more forgiving if this album had been part of my repertoire when I was 15-27. But as a middle aged listener, the shitty vocals were distracting; the songs where the vocals stayed in his comfortable range were by far my favorites. The album captures the time perfectly from a sound standpoint, so it was fun to listen on that level. But the mediocre vocals and the uneven quality of music and songs across the album really brought the listening experience down.
I love me some New Order, but this one I wasn't quite jiving with.
Classic 80s sound. Singers were generally too long and very similar sounding. I like the bounciness though. Randomly off key singing was annoying.
Likte instrumentene og musikken, og tekstene til tider. synes vokalisten dro litt ned
Autant j’ai beaucoup aimé certaines chansons, autant la majorité ne m’a pas convaincue…
Valued watching the Joy Division documentary and film. Such a significant life and story of Ian and curious to hear how they are without him… Obviously, very familiar instrumental sound and structure. And not only a clearly different vocal, but really lacking in general. Feels it’s missing a fair few notes. Luckily, still good songwriting and backing. Yeh, vocals painful. Like a bad pub band singer. Really gets in the way of the album. Some nice use of electronics. Would probably be 3.5, but vocals take away too much.
Yes the vocals are a bit rough but that’s a vibe, the lyrics are good and I loveeeee synth 3 feels low so gonna say 3.5
Good but not amazing. Not my fav period of New Order, but interesting to hear!
Hm, od New Order poznam samo "Blue Monday" - I guess mi to vsaj vajb pove? (Pa Peter Hooka sm šla gledat, ko je neki let nazaj (omfg, 'neki let nazaj', lol, to je blo 2013) bil v Kino Šiški in so špilal Unknown Pleasures - kar mam rajši, k vajb New Order.) Yes, same vajb. ("Love Vigilantes" ma zanimiva besedila - od vojaka, k se vrne iz Vietnama.) "The Perfect Kiss" ma vmes random frog noises? (In kul začetek. Fakin hiter ritem.) ("This Time of Night" ma safr besedila, a po muski ne bi to dojel.) "Sunrise" mi zveni k The Cure komad. (Ampak, je kul!) "Elegia" je fakin amazing. (Vidim, da je bil za Iana Curtisa napisan.) ("Sooner Than You Think" mi je kul, koj na repeat. "Subculture" je ok. Instrumentalno me eni deli na "Blue Monday" spomnejo.) Ok, moje prvo poslušanje je blo dons ob pospravljanju & ne preveč pozorno. Will listen again, v oklepajih.
Not an album I have heard before but quite a nice collection of electro pop with a couple of experimental tracks too. Worth a listen.
Sunrise was best song.
Solid. But sometimes his voice be annoying me. Prefer the Cure
this is ok, kinda of just droning lyrics and the songs sounds blend together
Not a bad synth-pop album. If there was an option to eliminate the vocals, this would have been so much better.
Never really listened to New Order. Love Vigilantes has a strong opener. Overall this album is pretty rad! Nothing too groundbreaking but pleasant to listen to. I can't pick out any real stand outs. Maybe Sub-culture.
Ok. ★★★
Bel sound nel complesso, ma non memorabile
Ugh, another synth-pop album. No real emotion either way on this. 3/5.
Decent use of synths but reminded me a bit of the cute but not as good
Постоянное ощущение, что я где-то это слышал. Но в целом звучит, как несмелый и застенчивый Depeche Mode
Indie before it was known as that. Alternative as well. Dance based 80s Irish awesomeness.
Not my favorite New Order. A few solid rock-ier songs (Love Vigilantes and Sunrise). Face Up is a great dance song, up there with Bizarre Love Triangle for my favorite of theirs in that genre, but I still don’t like that mode of New Order all that much.
I thought it was fine, didn't really catch my interest though. Exceptionally 80s
Favourite track: love vigilantes
This album isn't bad, but it's not much of my liking. It's very safe, and doesn't offer much more than 80's new-wave, which becomes very insipid for me and is the same thing all the time. So it's nice, not bad, but not that good to be a highlight. I would give it a 5 out of 10, so three stars is fair enough.
Standard 80s music, big fan of "Elegia".
2.8 2x decent but nothing stood out
Another new wavey entry. I liked it more than Devo but still not my sound. Prefer the cure for the genre
Not terrible, but every song sounds the same to me--kind of like The Cure. Probably a 2.5 for me, but bumping.
Poppy 80's dance music. I was never really into New Order (nor Joy Division) back in the day, so for me it's just OK. Some of their other songs are definitely better, like Bizarre Love Triangle.
I feel like New Order has better albums. Pretty much every excellent song here is balanced out by one with shaky vocals.
Waffled between a 3 and 4 for this one given my love of Joy Division and New Order - but I think there's a reason I haven't really heard anything beyond the big singles for this album. & his vocals are quite weak on a few songs, honestly taking me out of enjoying the new wave synth vibes I usually love. So a 3 it is.
Overly synth-y 80s pop, but still pretty nice. Started out great, but kinda got forgettable and same-y after a while. Best song: Love Vigilantes
80s rhythm driven synth rock. Not bad, but doesn't pull my heart or mind strings.
Solid album. I liked that he used frogs as an instrument.
I like new order quite a bit. And this was pretty decent. Not much else to say. Pretty chill.
“Sunrise” was super great!
i can smell a ghost soldier twist coming a mile away
Reasonably okay. Not standout but some good stuff. Could lose the excessive synth.
A resounding meh, limp vocal that went nowhere.
Not that bad, but I never had enough patience for post punk
This was alright. I like some of the New Order hits but this to me was mostly middle of the road. I didn't know a lot of the history about New Order and how they're born from Joy Division, and how the singer of New Order reluctantly became the singer. Honestly kind of makes sense listening to this (at times).
I bet this was very popular and a new sound in the mid-80’s. A few catchy songs and clearly talented musicians. Might listen to a couple again.
Good early New Order.
Random thoughts: * This was pretty incredible 80s synth rock. * Love Vigilantes was the stand out track and one I immediately recognized. Not sure if it was in my brain from my (the best of) New Order CD or the Iron and Wine cover. * Elegia was a super cool track that was very cinematic. * This album made my break out my CD and listen to a CD on my old Bose CD player. Fun!
