Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim
Frank Sinatra, Antônio Carlos Jobim
Reviews (page 2 of 8)
I'm starting to wonder if I had been around when Elvis came out, my reaction would have been, "He's no Sinatra"
This album was smoooooth. Nice.
OH I LOVED ALL OF THE SONGS
Ol Blue Eyes did it again
Sinatra does Bossa Nova? Hell yeah.
I absolutely adore this album! A perfect album for unwinding in bed under warm orange lights
I'm a bit of a sucker for these old time vocalizations, and this one is particularly good because of the instrumentation.
What a wonderful way of ending 2025! Maybe I'm being biased on this evaluation because of this, but I really enjoyed all this "bossa nova" thing on my last morning of 2025. Absolute brilliant partnership between Sinatra and Jobim, 5/5
This one was brand new to me. What a phenomenal match, Sinatra and Jobim are so smooth. Sure, it's a pretty one-note album as the whole thing is pretty similar Bossa Nova, but it's just done so well it's incredibly enjoyable.
A beautiful album! Stunning!
Nimble, swinging, beautifully crafted.
Needed this
Definitely not my thing
Very nice.
HOLY STRAIGHT HEAT WHAT A GIFT
solid gold brasil meets blue eyes
A meeting of two a great musicians this should be part of every jazz and bossa nova lover's collection.
laufey blueprints🌟
bossaNova
Simply SUBLIME... two absolute legends... sounding like something not heard before... 7 of the 10 songs were written by Jobim... the other three are American songbook standards... "Girl From Ipanema" opens this record... the beautiful guitar by Jobim... the velvet Sinatra vocals and the Claus Ogerman conducted band/orchestra... Then Jobim comes in singing the Portuguese lyrics... so smooth... this must be what Heaven sounds like... i'm glad the producer left their unison singing alone... and didn't even try to match them up... when i do that, i get killed for it, lol... but, it works here... "Dindi" is one of my all time favorite songs... and this is a great version... the Irving Berlin penned "Change Partners"... beautiful... it sounds great with a light samba beat... Jobim's piano and guitar sounding so right... "Corcovado" another one of my all time favorite songs... is done to perfection... i wish Jobim had sung a verse... but, oh well... fantastic... "Meditation" is next with Sinatra almost sounding like Jobim in the opening note... "Insensatez"... so good... Cole Porter's "I Concentrate On You" which is a close second to the Fred Astaire version... with Jobim going "djing djing djing" lol... a light samba bossa nova mixing in with a typical US type easy listening string section... bad ass... "Once I Loved" aka "O Amor en Paz"... closes this lovely piece of musical art... FIVE STARS..."
I'm a sucker for bossa nova.
Today is my wife's birthday, but with this album I was the one that was given a gift. I've been familiar with Bossa Nova through my drum and percussion studies for decades but had somehow never come across this album. *Chef's kiss* Kickstarted her birthday off perfectly and what they say is true, happy wife happy life.
Smooth as you like
Fabulous mashup of bossa nova and songbook crooning. My only criticism is that the album is too short (28 minutes). "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" is a standout track.
This is amazing. So fun and enjoyable to listen to :)
Frank
My goodness that VOICE!!! Am I in a cloud with a martini?? In a James Bond movie?? Or somewhere on the French Riviera with an orange wine in hand - who knows… but this album made me feel like I was in an alternate (and very relaxing) world.
Cool as the other side of the pillow.
🎵 Album #45 / Frank Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim – Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim (1967) 🗯 When Ol’ Blue Eyes met the father of bossa nova, the result was pure elegance — a whisper of jazz, a sway of samba, and a whole lot of restraint. Sinatra reins in the bravado, phrasing with a smoothness that perfectly complements Jobim’s nylon-string guitar, brushed percussion, and subtle orchestration. It’s still Sinatra, clear and commanding, but softened at the edges to let the bossa nova breeze carry the mood. The Girl from Ipanema seduces without trying, Dindi feels like a candlelit slow dance, and Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars is exactly what the title promises. The whole record glows with late-night warmth — gentle, romantic, and timelessly classy. For me? It’s not fireworks or drama, but a record of pure atmosphere. Music to set a room, a mood, or a moment. Verdict: Essential (romance, cocktails, after-dark) For fans of: João Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, Stan Getz, mood-setting bossa nova
I loved how Frank Sinatra helped Antonio Carlos Jobim gain a larger following in the U.S. Frank's voice amazes me - depth, range, feeling. Anonio's guitar playing added a layer. I think Sarah Vaughn's renditions of several of these songs is also a good listen. I enjoyed the video of Frank and Antonio as younger and then older men together - especially when Frank lights up a cigarette and smokes on stage while singing.
Sublime
Música de Verão, música de Inverno, música para a alma, música para tudo. Não passo sem ouvir estes senhores e não há muito melhor para nos aquecer!
I love bossa nova, Frank Sinatra, and this album also has my favourite version of The Girl From Ipanema.
So this album was like a pleasant surprise to me. I never listened to Kobim and very little Sinatra. BUT! As of recently, I've been getting into (and loving) Latin bossa nova. This album was a nice blend of bossa nova and jazz. I adored it, I'll be coming back to this one again.
First good album I’ve gotten this week. Nobody has ever had or ever will have a voice like Sinatra. Paired with Jobim is just beautiful. Also, second version of Girl From Ipanema on this venture, and I’m not sure which is better.
Iconic love it!
Was a very good album. A little slower for my liking but how can you hate on the goat frank
I don't typically listen to the popular crooners of the 1950's or even jazz style music. Those aren't the genres of music I typically enjoy. That being said, I consider myself fairly open-minded when it comes to music so I'm going to be open-minded with this endeavor. I found the music to be both soothing and powerful. Frank certainly has an incredible voice and it stands to reason why he was an impact full presence in music for six decades. I completely understand the appeal.
Not my favourite of Frank's work, but I really love his voice There were some classic tunes on this album. Loved the Portuguese parts too, their voices blended nicely Very smooth and chill 5 ⭐️
Love is the saddest thing when it goes away...
Solche Musik ist einfach schön.
Well I guess I'm an old man now because I love this.
finally i album i did like again
Frank sinatras voice is with a bossa nova backing - genuinely what more could you want. Specific rating - 4.8 Fav song- girl from ipanema Least fav- dindi
He’s Frank Sinatra after all
Timeless. I felt like someone teleported me into 70s , hot summer , ocean breeze, my toes in the send, old fashioned swimming shorts, some random guy smoking cuban cigare and reading Hamingways bestseller, Sean Connery as James Bond and some bitterness while drinking old-fashioned and listening to Franks voice
I guess I wasn't aware of this album existing, but everything about this seems so familiar and comforting to me. The recording and production on this is perfect. Easily a 5 star album.
God damn does this hit. "Dindi" is one of Sinatra's best. And the light acoustic strumming adds so much to the arrangements. Just a great pair. Though Antônio's mic is a little messed up. And they really should have left "Baubles, Bangles, & Beads" off the tracklist because it kind of sucks. But still a 5 star record for me
Absolutely great
Simply gorgeous! Sinatra waited to make his Bossa Nova debut and what a debut it is. Perhaps Sinatra's most delicate performance, beautifully complimented by relaxed and subtle arrangements that perfectly compliment Sinatra's understated performance. Listen to how he sings the word "smile" at the end of The Girl of Ipanema" with a beautiful lilt that I've never before heard in his phrasing. Genius! This album will become a staple for me. 5 stars
GENIAL! GENIAL!
"And so when wise men say to me That love's young dream never comes true To prove that even the wise men can be wrong I concentrate on you" 5/5
I liked it a lot. I will be revisiting this album.
love love love. gives warm cozy winter nights wrapped in a blanket with a nice cup of tea.
Possibly the most romantic album I've ever heard.
Grew up listening to this under my mom's wings, locked into my consciousness. Gold.
Hmmmm the music is absolutely impeccable… but I can help think of another album by Getz/Gilberto that is very similar but all the singing is in Portuguese and it’s definitely better. Still really solid but Frank should do us all a favor and learn Portuguese top 3. Girl from Ipanema, change partners, quiet nights of quiet stars
Perfection, almost tops in the wee small hours.
The master sings Bossa Nova with the master. Entrancing
Loved it
9/10
I see Brazilian jazz, I rate 5 stars.
Oh man this first track is perfect for the fucking chaos here in the office today lol Good ol frankie...What a voice. I like the Basa Nova sound in this album. I'm going to have to rememeber this album for a romantic night or cooking album. 5 stars
Absolutely, yes—and my wife would agree.
Sinatra is still widely listened to and revered today but he’s also still kind of underrated? He was as much of a game changer and taste maker as the Beatles, Dylan and Davis but is seldom listed as one probably because he wasn’t a writer. But when you listen to projects like this, it’s clear that he knew exactly what he wanted in his music and how to challenge his expectations. Works perfectly with Jobim. A-
If you listen closely, right in the middle of track 4 you can hear Len cough and splutter. He’s never smoked. Not sure why he thought he could keep up with Frank! 4.9
Sinatra jobim Such a beautiful record. I really love Dindi and the arrangements song of the Sabia are so nice. Cool to hear all these tunes with English lyrics. I love the low not he sings at the end of Wave.
Really cant go wrong. Jobim is one of the greatest composers and sinatra singing his songs is just beautiful
Beautiful
Such greatness.
Classic bossa. Getting slightly tired of hearing the same standards on a lot of bossa nova albums, but whatever, I can’t not give this a 5
boaaah ich hasses dases uf englisch isch aber es isch sooo schön ipanema und denn toooom fuuuck. arrangement jo geil jo. er cha ebe scho singe de francis. dindi au suuperschö. change partners irving berlin aber bossa? insane. i glaub mauldasche moment ha wenig z sege. s isch halt afoch mega min shit. er isch seehr croonig im singe aber zb inutil paisagen isch soooo schöööööön fuuuuuck. how insensitive suuuper schön find afoch m jobim sini stimm geiler für so sache aber de sinatra het sie huuere im griff sini stimm. i concentrate on youu. jobim mit de adlibs haha
Lovely melding of these two great singers
One of the most relaxing albums I've listened yet. Love the Sinatra/Bossanova sound this album provides. Girl From Ipanema is fine; I prefer other renditions of it but all else it fantastic. 9/10
A wonderful album with mostly songs by Jobim. A classic.
Uuu, dobar uvod Franky :) Girl from Ipanema. Never noticed that before.
I'm not a Sinatra fan but he performs very well on this album. His vocals are very solid and the music is outstanding. Overall, this is an album very much worth listening to.
One of Sinatra's finest recordings.
Frank Sinatra over Bossa Nova especially with Antonio Carlos Jobim is a match in heaven. Something these days aint happening no more. Its a perfect crossover that i would dream of if it wouldnt happen! Grateful it did! Wonderful 5.0/5.0 thats what music about and the studio sessions cut on the anniversary version shows how effortless and talented those 2 guys are with it.
Easy 5, Franks crooning goes great with the instrumentals, its smooth and just delightful.
Great album perfect for any occasion. You’ll feel as cool as Mel Gibson in “What Women Want”
Listened to this while working for a better part of my day. Real nice stuff here from Ole Blue Eyes.
Jobim wrote such rich songs with beautiful melodies, bossanova rhythms and melancholy lyrics, about being that shy guy in the corner of the room (or quiet part of the beach) being overlooked by that beautiful girl. The messages and music are universal and timeless. Sinatra's smooth delivery adds a sense of cool to the proceedings. I hadn't heard this version of The Girl From Ipanema, but it's just as good as the Gilberto/Getz version (missing Getz's classic sax solo, of course). Liked songs added: - The Girl From Ipanema - I Concentrate On You
Great old music. Loved it.
Sinatra is always good with Jobin incredible
Ну ок. Люблю Синатру
I like jazz.
This is beautiful
Francis Friggin’ Albert baby! Smooth as silk!!
Big fan of Frank Sinatra. Easy-listening vocal style
Sneaked into a 5/5 rating from me, but it deserves its spot. The combination of styles from Sinatra and Jobim work exceptionally well. You’d think I’d get tired of hearing The Girl From Ipanema but no.
Excellent.
I'm in my kitchen making breakfast and I throw on the album. The Girl From Ipanema plays and within the first few bars I'm already tapping my toes and doing a little sway. Oh my yes. That guitar, smooth as butter, that orchestra, just oozing cool, that voice crooning me into a different time and place. When Dindi begins I find that I suddenly have a smoking jacket on, no idea where it came from. Change Partners brings some comfortable loafers, and my spatula has turned into a cigarette smoking lazily, even though I don't smoke. Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars comes on and I'm no longer in my kitchen, a fez has appeared on my head and I now have a pencil mustache twisted at the ends. Meditation and If You Never Come To Me play and now I have a martini, very dry, with two olives. It's only 7AM. It does not matter. How Insensitive and Baubles Bangles and Beads play and I'm sitting in a lounge, the haze of smoke and smell of booze all around, and on stage is Sinatra. My wife walks in, she's wearing a fedora and wondering what on earth is going on. Once I Loved plays and we hold each other and weep at the heartbreak that drips from the song. The album ends and I'm back in my kitchen, the eggs have burned and the toast is charcoal. Nothing to do but hit play again then, I suppose. Seriously, heartbreak, longing, love and jealousy all in 10 songs and just under half an hour. Take the trip. 5/5 Dry martini's with a smooth jazz guitar.
This collaboration between two amazing artists is a slice of heaven. I love each on their own infinitely, and together they make magic. Two great tastes that taste great together!
I felt so hip and classy today…although I am sure that I was neither.
Smooth and classy. Top-notch!
This made for a pleasant, lovely afternoon. I love Jobim’s music!
Smooth Brazilian bossa nova beats and Frank’s voice (from that era). A can’t miss. Brought back memories of my dad, cocktail parties spent in my room but overhearing this kind of music and a time embedded in my musical conciseness. Perfect orchestrations and arrangements. Sinatra’s voice at its finest. Five stars.
This album was way before my time, but I can tell going into it that it is something pretty special. (Also neat to get another orchestra album right after S&M). While listening to this I was reading more about the history or this album: who Jobim was, more about Sinatra, and just the goings on about music during the time. A collaboration album like this is a great seed to grow a whole lesson out of and it makes me want to be a teacher of a music history class if only to share this with a whole room of students. Nothing I've said so far has really anything to do with the tracks themselves, but I'm not sure anything needs to be said. Every one is just a pleasant experience that just emanates a timeless, classic sound that can be listened to forever. I know I'm just at the very tip of an iceberg for Sinatra's career and I'm already starting to see why he was such a big deal. Favorite track: "If you never come to me" 5/5
Helped me calm down while my parents were fighting. Good fun
I love Sinatra and Jobim so I can't be objective.
Sinatra was the second greatest white male singer of the 20th century. Elvis pipped him, but only just. Elvis had the greater note range and stylistic range. But within Sinatra limits, he was untouchable. He could break your heart. He could lift a crappy song to high art. He could make you think you were in the heavens with a great song. Give him a great arranger and it’s hard to even explain. Yes, he was a mixture of great human being and puerile awful son of a bitch, but it’s about the voice. He was the voice. Try and understand it. With one of the great Latin songwriters, Jobim, this could have collapsed under its own weight if expectations. It doesn’t. Sinatra, for all the macho swagger, had the lightest of touch when it was needed. Really, girl from Ipanema is all you need to get this album. But all of it is great, even the oversung by mediocrities how insensitive. That this lost out to Sgt Peppers for album of the year is no slight against either album. Finally a must hear.
An unexpected and special album. I am swooning a bit after this one... if only there were more complete surprises on this list like this! A very welcome experience on my new Focal headphones, it was all cocktail lounge lush and adorable, good stereo separation, and yes, I hear the certain vulnerability in his voice, that amazing amazing voice. I tend to prefer female vocals for this genre / American standards / bossa nova and mood, (other than George Michael in his later years) and now I have a 2nd exception: Frank. he does stand a little alone, and then this album. Slightly slower and gentler versions of the songs than I knew. Its also an amazing clear recording, might I add. I turned it right up, and nothing is lost.... just the barest hiss (yes, I am now seeking out "Sinatra–Jobim Sessions" for just a little more... just like people do after hearing "Ella & Louis" for the first time) . [GRATEFUL FOR a lovely entry point to Frank Sinatra - this is the first album of his I have ever heard]
Smokin’!
You can't go wing with Frank. Wonderful album! It made me want to sit back and chill with a cocktail.
Confession: I’m a huge Frank fan. He was the soundtrack behind so many all nighters at my law firm in New York. But I wasn’t familiar with this album at all. I loved it. Made me want to watch early James Bond movies. It feels so analogue to me; from a time of mechanical Leica cameras, automatic Rolex watches and stick-shift Porsche 356’s. What really impressed me was that they recorded this in two days, after which Frank and his daughter recorded the hit “Somethin’ Stupid” in one evening. It’s like they just called Frank and said, “Frankie! Come down and sing some songs” and he just says “Hit me. And a one, and a two…”. And bada bing bada boom, it’s done. Contrast with the G&R album we just reviewed where Axl Rose burned up studio time and drove his band mates crazy singing one line at a time. Not Frank. Just sing the songs we got for you, Frank. One take. Pure gold.
A great meeting of the minds and fine bossa nova album. And the end of Sinatras golden age.
Perfect album
Two masters as the height of their powers. A great album and collaboration.
Sonzao, dar aquela moral pro BR, clássicos e tal
More than the sum of its parts. And when the parts are great, the album will be fantastic. Shoutout to the band and orchestration which really shine.
Smooth
muito bom
Music for resting, everything’s alright
Really good
9/10 Frankie delivers!
HOLY SHIT YES YES YES. I wrote a short story on Bossa Nova last year and throughout the whole time was just listening to Jobim and Gilberto, mwah. Love Sinatra so this will be amazing. IT OPENS WITH GAROTTA DE IPANEMA OFC!!!
Loved it..
Bossa nova classics with Frank and Jobim. Trombone solos!
So sweet and relaxing. Love in the streets and in the air. Sensuality with a pure and very intelligent playing.
Arguably my favorite discovery upon starting this incredible journey of music!!! This record is such a beautiful gem, an outstanding collection of beautiful ballads. Opener The Girl From Ipanema opens on a very high note, and rarely does the quality ever drop. I feel this will become a record I will really grow to cherish over time Favorite lyrics: - But I watch her so sadly. How can I tell her I love her. Yes, I would give my heart gladly. But each day, when she walks to the sea. She looks straight ahead, not at me. - If I only had words, I would say all the beautiful. Things that I see when you're with me. - This is where I want to be. Here with you so close to me. Until the final flicker of life's ember. I, who was lost and lonely. Believing life was only. A bitter tragic joke, have found with you. The meaning of existence, my love. - I will wait for you. Till the sun falls from out of the sky. For what else can I do? I will wait for you. Meditating how sweet life will be. When you come back to me. Favorite tracks: - The Girl From Ipanema - Change Partners - Quiet Night Of Quiet Stars (Corcovado) - How Insensitive - Baubles, Bangles And Beads 9 out of 10
5, oh frankie
Fantastic album. Great vibes makes me wish i could dance with someone
Lovely album with chill vibes. The lyrics maybe a little questionable in this day and age tho
Love Frank, this album is particularly smooth and easy
I love Sinatra so much
Just frank🤌
Banger
Discazo
Previously listened to a lot of these songs sung by Blossom Dearie. Much stronger bossa nova feel compared with her. Thoroughly enjoyable and very slick.
Soothing and love guitar
I didn't realize how sultry he was. Very sexy. Highlights: Dindi Change Partners Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars really, most of them. Swoon.
Good
Un lujito
Every song is fabulous. The musicians, the singers, all of it
Love this one.
uooou
Oh wow this hit so hard today! That arrangement of girl from ipanema is perfection! All stars!
9/10. Really good
Like the Wii Shop Music. Really makes me wanna just croon it.
Quality sound! Looking forward to listening to this on a cocktail hour.
Loved it! So classy
Super chill. Easy to listen to. Will come back for another listen for sure.
Love me some Sinatra
Great listening album. Frank Sinatra was a Rock Star then and still is a Rock Star today. Music will never be forgotten!!!!
Cigarette soaked voice over some Bosa Nova I'm all about it.
was very nice!
Sublime.
Esse álbum é extraordinário. Você simplesmente se sente em uma época da qual não viveu. Ideal para imaginar que é rico, tomar uma taça de vinho e fumar vários cigarros depois de um dia fodido de trabalho!
Crooning is always great
soooo beautiful
So smooth. Transports you to a different, more romantic place.
Love bossa nova and Sinatra fits into this very well.
Two masters doing what they do best.
Straight up 5-star without even having to listen much. Seriously, this is an absolute winner.
luvvvvvv
Unbelievably fantastic audio quality.. Sinatra's voice is really something else.. absolutely amazing album
Крутой альбом
November 1, 2021 Maybe I'm just in the right mood for this, but I guess I like Frank Sinatra. And/or bossa nova? Particular standouts were "How Insensitive" and "I Concentrate On You"
Rating: 10/10
Really enjoyed this Bossa Nova banger
Девушка из ипонемы!
Wat een geweldig album. Heerlijk relaxed. Vijf sterren.
a very relaxing experience. So glad to revisit thIs gem.
So smooth.
Beautiful, the type of album that can transport you to another time and place, makes me forget some of the bad.
It's like it knew I was joining on Friday
Perfeito. Finalmente algo bom após dias e dias de música ruim
Absolutely fantastic!
Obra maestra.
How pleasant and warm
Just beautiful, what else can I say. We grew up with Frankie in the house and it was great listening to a whole album by him and this album is definitely one of his best ones. What can beat The Girl From Ipanema, absolutely nothing? Well maybe Girl from the North Country but, a paisan like Frank Sinatra blows Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan outta da water. "Fughetta Bout it!" -Joseph Klein, Yes this is an original quote by me.
Love me some franky
Maybe Frank’s last truly great album?
If it was possible to make nails on a chalk board sound good, he would have been the one to be able to do it
As expected from both artists, it's a great chill album.
The best album ever. Tanvi also said the same.
The Girl from Ipanema...great song. Sinatra sounds terrific. I like the version with Jobim's wife better. Dindi, with the Portuguese pronunciation (Jinji?), is good too. This album defines its sound from the start and just goes hard at it...not enough albums do that. I like this album. This could be the soundtrack to a Rob Reiner or Garry Marshall movie. The lyrics of Baubles, Bangles and Beads (thank you for no Oxford comma) must have been written by a 13-year-old.
For true appreciation of this album I think it helps to have lived when this type of music was common and popular. This was a little rich and a little too much "setting the table for romance" vibe for my morning walk but Frank was in good voice and this was nice.
I mean, it’s Frank Sinatra. It doesn’t matter who he’s with, it always comes back to Sinatra. So ask yourself, can you handle the Sinatra way? For what this offers and for the type of music it is, it’s flawless. It lacks that big track. The girl from Ipanema does not cut it. Give your head a shake.
8/1001 A junção de um dos maiores compositores do século com um dos maiores cantores não tinha como dar errado, com destaques para as interpretações dos clássicos de Getz/Gilberto, The Girl from Ipanema e Corcovado The Girl from Ipanema - 90 Dindi - 75 Change Partners - 85 Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado) - 80 Meditation (Meditação) - 75 If You Never Come to Me (Inútil Paisagem) - 75 How Insensitive (Insensatez) - 80 I Concentrate on You - 80 Baubles, Bangles and Beads - 75 Once I Loved (O Amor em Paz) - 75 Media: 79
thoroughly enjoyable album. 4/5.
Relaxing, melodic riffs, classic Sinatra stuff, very much enjoyed
That was chill. I enjoyed that. Short and sweet too!
man the vocals and listening this late night is an experience
Obviously great 4/5
Now I want to listen to Christmas songs
- Ugh, love this album
Same as Elvis's voice, Sinatra simply caresses you with his vocal; his music & opus are timeless... 🎼
Me gustó más de lo esperado. Romántico. Buenas letras.
Always a good day for some ole blue eyes!
I want this on vinyl its great
I like Frankie boy and his way with a tune but he sounds like he’s ready for bed on this one!
I liked this. Generally, I like Sinatra. The Girl From Ipanema didn't really do it for me but some of the other music I thought was really good and smooth and mellow. I particularly liked How insensitive.
Not one of my favourite Sinatra albums, don't think it quite comes off all the time. Obviously spot on on the title track but Think his well known dictation and control don't always fit, not loose enough for the music more suited to a Dean Martin vibe. And please review music. You can dislike music without the other stuff. The Usual social and historical presentism here, has it ever been so amplified. so unmoored from the past, quick to condemn by today's standards but unwilling to actually take any learning from the past. Yeah if it’s a Gary Glitter level creep that cuts across the ages. Sinatra by anyone's standards had faults but review the music too otherwise it's just sanctimonious. Like we are so enlightened today in 2026, yeah right, look around Music - 4 Star
I didn't know Sinatra was still good during the 60s. When "Self-Titled" was released, pop-rockers such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were huge. You'd think Sinatra and Jobim would've lost steam by then. "Self-Titled" is short and sweet, so it doesn't overstay its welcome. All of its songs were similar to each other, but I still enjoyed them. 4 stars for "Self-Titled".
Nice short and sweet easy listening.
fun!
Easy 4 star.
Pleasant
[shoves Sinatra into a spike pit] Thank you Antonio Carlos Jobim for my life <3
Good
The orchestration isn’t always doing these songs any favors. But they are great songs, and Sinatra’s low-key (for him!) approach serves them well.
Short and smooth
What a duo. Incredible music.
Bastante guay, las canciones preciosas
Classic & classy; a fun-yet-haunting cross-over between classic crooning & Brazilian bossa nova.
Classic
Honestly would've been 5 stars if it hadn't had four different (yet still identical) versions of Girl From Ipanema. Plus I just listened to Astrud Gilberto's album a few days ago; I've had enough Girl From Ipanema at this point.
Très bon à réécouter je pense.
Ring a ding ding baby
beetje biased want ik ben frank sinatra fan.. maar dit s echt een heel goed collab album van hem
Rösten! En fyra
Really soothing album to listen to
Just a cool, vibe of an album. Sinatra feels like the 50's Elvis Costello. You will never be as cool as him. But yeah, smooth as hell, and a vibe.
what a beautiful album! i genuinely like sinatra's music, but i'm not acquainted with it though, so it was nice to listen to something full-length and base my opinion. also sinatra's and jobim's voices were really compatible together, more than i thought they would be! i found a lot of tracks which i will certainly come back to: "change partners", "i concentrate on you" and "once i loved (o amor em paz)". i also wasn't aware that "change partners" was a jazz standard written by irving berlin - who apart from being an absolute jazz legend stood behind so many great soundtrack scores (as easter parade!) - idk i just found this particular fact interesting, while exploring the wikipedia page of this album haha
The Girl From Ipanema is fantastic. The album is great but I'm not sure there's too much standing out here. I can't give this a 5. 4.5/5
Fucking joyota 4.0
Sinatra no decepciona
The whole album gave me detective mode in noir city
"Alright, now hear me out. What if we white-boy-ified Getz/Gilberto?" Mr. Sinatra confidently asked, probably drunk. "Sure, why not? You are Frank Sinatra, after all," his manager confidently responded, probably also drunk, "just make sure you throw in that Irving Berlin song about convincing a woman to cheat on her husband." They then drunkenly shake hands and walk home, assumedly calling Antônio Carlos Jobim at some point. I was -39 years old when this album comes out, so I'm very knowledgeable on how people in the late 60s talked. I also don't believe for a goddamn second this album came out in 1967. The Velvet Underground & Nico and Are You Experienced came out in the same year as this. Jokes aside, it's a great album. I prefer the Getz/Gilberto versions of a lot of these songs and Change Partners aged like Frank Sinatra's lungs, but it's a still a great album. Frank Sinatra is a fairly competent Bossa singer and I enjoyed most of the album.
i miss working with the elderly and listening to frank every day
I could listen to the Chairman sing the phone book. Good stuff
The girl from ipanema!!
4/5
adorable
Shorter than i would have hoped. Ava maria
Sinatra doing bossa nova: not something I'd think I would hear, but a pleasant surprise, nonetheless. 4.5 bumped down to 4.
Very soothing. These two are a good pair; their voices really flow together. Change Partners and Baubles, Bangles and Beads were my stand-outs. 7.2/10.
LOVE mn bossa nova. girl from ipanema is perfect natuurlijk. kritiekpuntje is dat ik meer Portugees en minder Sinatra wil horen
These songs are really good and Frank Sinatra is also really good. I’m not entirely sure the blend of the two was perfect but I enjoyed it whilst it was on.
Er hät coocked
Very nice easy listening which would be perfect for working.
There's nothing wrong with Frank Sinatra - could listen to this all day.
Chill vibes.
just very classy easy listening. jazzy, loungey, beautiful.
Well, this was unexpected. Not Sinatra's very best (that would be In the Wee Small Hours) but there's no denying the Velvet beauty of his voice. Set that voice against these lush arrangements and you are going to melt hearts. It might be unfashionable all these years later, but it's worth remembering that it was nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammys, only losing out to Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. So, no slouch. There are certainly better versions of these songs (Astrud Gilberto says "Hi!") and how well Broadway show tunes benefit from the Latin treatment is open to discussion. But it's still a pretty pleasant way to spend some time. I Concentrate on You and How Insensitive are absolute standouts, it must be said, and just things of beauty.
I’m a big Sinatra fan, and this collaboration with Jobim is nice, but not quite top tier for me. Love Change Partners, though.
some reviews called this album boring. sure, in the way that the perfect bowl of scrambled eggs is “boring.” but it’s still perfect and hard as hell to do! i have to stop reading these reviews honestly because these people have abysmal taste. what i will say is this album is clearly not sinatra’s absolute best. that’s why it’s getting a four and not a five. i didn’t even download too much just two or three songs. but how could you not like this? it’s just perfect. it’s one of those sounds you could have playing all day in the background. it isn’t exactly main idea, hey guys come to listen to this. but it is beautiful and really uplifted my day.
Yayyyyyy Frank Sinatra I first heard the girl from Ipanema in middle school, we had to sing it. I prefer the original but I really enjoy this version too! I will never get bored of his voice, it is quite deep
Frank = francis albert ??? yeah of course this is beautiful
Podia ter sido um 5.
Sinatra and Bossa Nova is a great combo. Even though a lot of these tracks are covers, Frank gets a pass. My biggest regret on this generator was not giving Getz & Gilberto 5 stars.
# In-Depth Review: *Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim* (1967) Released in March 1967, *Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim* represents one of the most elegant and unexpected collaborations in American popular music. Recorded over three nights in late January and early February 1967 at Western Recorders in Hollywood, the album unites the 51-year-old Chairman of the Board with the 40-year-old father of bossa nova for a brief but luminous 28-minute journey into understated romanticism. --- ## The Music & Arrangements **Claus Ogerman's Orchestration** The album's sonic identity is defined by arranger/conductor Claus Ogerman's "gossamer-light" arrangements . Unlike the brassy, swinging Nelson Riddle charts that defined Sinatra's Capitol years or the big-band bombast of his Basie collaborations, Ogerman's orchestrations are delicate, translucent, and restrained. Woodwinds trill like tropical birds, strings provide a velvet cushion rather than dramatic swells, and the percussion—courtesy of bossa nova specialists like Dom Um Romão—maintains a subtle, breathing pulse rather than driving the rhythm forward. The instrumentation is notably stripped down compared to typical Sinatra productions: Dick Noel's subdued trombone, Bud Shank's flute, and Jobim's nylon-string acoustic guitar create an intimate chamber-music atmosphere. As one reviewer noted, "Slap one of [Jobim's] songs on the back with a couple of trumpets? Like washing crystal in a cement mixer" . **The Bossa Nova Aesthetic** The album features seven Jobim originals and three Great American Songbook standards ("Change Partners," "I Concentrate on You," and "Baubles, Bangles and Beads") reimagined with bossa nova sensibilities. The tempos are unhurried—seven of the ten tracks clock in at under three minutes, with nothing exceeding four minutes . This brevity works in the album's favor; the music never overstays its welcome, leaving the listener wanting more rather than exhausted by excess. --- ## Lyrics & Themes **Romantic Intimacy and Vulnerability** The dominant theme throughout is romantic intimacy approached with a maturity that only Sinatra at 51 could deliver. The lyrics—mostly English adaptations by Norman Gimbel, Gene Lees, and Ray Gilbert—explore love not with the desperate longing of Sinatra's torch songs or the swaggering confidence of his swing albums, but with a quiet, contemplative acceptance. On **"The Girl from Ipanema"** (which opens the album), Sinatra delivers Norman Gimbel's famous lyrics—"Tall and tan and young and lovely"—with a casual sensuality that contrasts with Astrud Gilberto's more ethereal original. His final accentuated "smile" at the track's conclusion demonstrates his mastery of phrasing, turning a single word into a complete emotional statement . **"Dindi"** (pronounced "Jin-jee") stands as perhaps the album's emotional centerpiece. Written by Jobim for Brazilian singer Sylvia Telles (who died in a car accident shortly after recording it), the song features English lyrics by Ray Gilbert. Sinatra's delivery—particularly the breathy "oh, Dindi" and the way he sings of the wind—has been described as "one of the most exquisite things ever to come out of American popular music" . The song captures a sense of fragile beauty and impending loss that resonates deeply. **Spiritual Contemplation** **"Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars"** (Jobim's "Corcovado" with English lyrics by Gene Lees) elevates romantic love to near-spiritual heights. When Sinatra sings "I live within your eyes," there's a hushed reverence that suggests something beyond mere romance—a search for meaning and transcendence through human connection. The line "the meaning of existence" is delivered not as hyperbole but as quiet revelation. **Melancholy and Acceptance** The album closes with **"Once I Loved"** (O Amor em Paz), a song of "introspection and quiet soul-searching" . Despite lyrics that speak of redemption—"Then one day from my infinite sadness you came and brought me love again"—the final message is one of caution: "love is the saddest thing when it goes away." It's a fitting conclusion to an album that acknowledges the transient nature of beauty while celebrating its existence. --- ## Production & Performance **Sinatra's Vocal Transformation** The most remarkable aspect of the album is Sinatra's vocal restraint. Having built his reputation on powerful, emotionally direct singing, Sinatra here adopts a near-whisper for much of the material. His famous quip during the sessions—"I haven't sung so soft since I had the laryngitis" —underscores the radical departure this represented. At 51, having just come off the swaggering success of "Strangers in the Night" and "That's Life," Sinatra chose to sacrifice his signature stylistics to serve the material . This restraint required extraordinary breath control. On **"I Concentrate on You"**, listen to how he takes a single breath for "...and once again our arms intertwine...and so when wise men say to me..."—a feat of technical mastery that belies the apparent effortlessness . **Jobim's Contribution** Jobim appears throughout on piano, guitar, and providing backing vocals (including a verse in Portuguese on "The Girl from Ipanema"). His presence validates the proceedings as authentic bossa nova rather than cultural appropriation. The interplay between Sinatra's velvet baritone and Jobim's gentle guitar creates a dialogue between two musical traditions—American popular song and Brazilian samba-canção—that feels natural rather than forced. **Sonny Burke's Production** Producer Sonny Burke, who had worked with Sinatra on numerous Reprise projects, understood that this album required a different approach. The recording quality is pristine, with Lee Herschberg's engineering capturing every nuance of Ogerman's arrangements and Sinatra's vocal subtleties. The album is considered "one of the two best sounding Sinatra albums on Reprise" . --- ## Influence & Legacy **Cultural Significance** The album arrived at a pivotal moment. In 1967, bossa nova had already peaked as a commercial trend in America (following the 1964 success of Getz/Gilberto), and Sinatra was facing the challenge of remaining relevant in a musical landscape increasingly dominated by The Beatles and rock music. Rather than chasing trends, Sinatra approached the material with artistic seriousness. As NPR noted, "No other American pop star would so thoroughly immerse himself in the world of bossa" . For Jobim and Brazilian musicians, the collaboration represented a "victory" and validation. When Jobim played acetates of the completed tracks for friends gathered at his hotel in Rio, "they were all astounded" . The album legitimized bossa nova as art music worthy of serious attention, not merely a passing fad. **Grammy Recognition** The album was nominated for Album of the Year at the 1968 Grammy Awards, losing to The Beatles' *Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band* . While it didn't win, the nomination alongside the most revolutionary rock album of the era speaks to its critical stature. **Lasting Impact** The album has influenced countless artists. When Diana Krall recorded her bossa nova album *Quiet Nights* in 2009, she specifically enlisted Claus Ogerman as arranger, creating a direct line back to the 1967 sessions . The album remains a touchstone for "adult" pop music—sophisticated, romantic, and unapologetically mature. The sessions also produced a sequel of sorts. In 1969, Sinatra and Jobim recorded a follow-up album (*Sinatra-Jobim*), but Sinatra pulled it from release at the last moment (though some 8-track copies had already shipped). Seven tracks eventually appeared on 1971's *Sinatra & Company*, with arrangements by a then-unknown Eumir Deodato . --- ## Pros | Strength | Description | |----------|-------------| | **Vocal Restraint** | Sinatra's softest, most intimate singing, demonstrating his ability to adapt his style to serve the material | | **Ogerman's Arrangements** | Delicate, translucent orchestrations that frame Sinatra's voice "like a Rolex on a velvet cushion" | | **Authenticity** | Jobim's presence on guitar, piano, and vocals ensures the bossa nova elements feel genuine rather than appropriated | | **Brevity** | At 28 minutes, the album maintains its spell without risking monotony; it leaves the listener wanting more | | **Emotional Depth** | The combination of Jobim's melancholic melodies and Sinatra's lived-in voice creates genuine pathos | | **Production Quality** | Exceptional sound engineering that captures every nuance of the performances | | **Cultural Bridge** | Successfully merges the Great American Songbook with Brazilian bossa nova, creating something new | --- ## Cons | Weakness | Description | |----------|-------------| | **Lack of Variety** | The consistent mood of hushed romanticism can feel one-dimensional; some listeners find it "bland" or "waiting room music" | | **Short Running Time** | At just 28 minutes, some listeners feel the album is over too quickly or offers insufficient value | | **Over-Production Concerns** | Some critics argue the arrangements, while beautiful, sand off the "rough edges" of authentic bossa nova | | **Translation Issues** | Some English lyrics (particularly on the unreleased 1969 sessions) have a "translated" feel that Sinatra reportedly found awkward | | **Not Definitive Versions** | For purists, Sinatra's versions of songs like "The Girl from Ipanema" can't match the Getz/Gilberto original | | **Limited Commercial Impact** | Peaked at #19 on the pop charts—respectable but not a blockbuster, and the sound was too subtle for mass appeal in 1967 | --- ## Conclusion *Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim* is a masterpiece of restraint and subtlety. It represents Sinatra at his most vulnerable, sacrificing the bravado that defined his public persona to serve Jobim's delicate compositions. The album proves that maturity in popular music doesn't mean irrelevance—it can mean a deeper, more nuanced expression of emotion. While it may not be the first Sinatra album newcomers should explore (those seeking the iconic "Sinatra sound" might start with his Capitol years or the Basie collaborations), it stands as perhaps his most artistically successful experiment. As one critic observed, it "doesn't reveal its pleasures immediately; the album is too textured and understated to be fully appreciated" . In an era of musical excess—the Summer of Love was just three months away—Sinatra and Jobim created something timeless: a half-hour of quiet intimacy that sounds as fresh today as it did in 1967. It is, as Stan Cornyn wrote in the original liner notes, "tender like a 2-day Rio sunburn"—a beautiful ache that lingers long after the music ends.

Sinatra is so good
An excellent record and collaboration of two titans from their respective countries. Frank’s take on The Girl From Ipanema (which I learned is the second most recorded song OF ALL TIME, after Yesterday) is fantastic, and kicks the album into an easy-listening vibe. It’s a great album for close listening or for accompanying you in the background on a Sunday morning.
Frank Sinatra is the Chairman of the Board and this album is one of the reasons why.
Very interesting album, and interesting albums are always what I'm looking for so Frank is Frank. You either appreciate his phrasing and his style, best exemplified by Phil Hartman, or you find it annoying and/or old-fashioned. I appreciate it. The Brazilian music is excellent. Jobim is excellent. Put these two combos together, you definitely get a fine veneer of cheese but I guess I like cheese in my music.
Loving it
i liked the girl from ipanema
Our last Sinatra album (of 3) and my clear favorite, mostly due to Jobim’s contributions. Not just because of The Girl From Ipanema, this reminds me of Bebel Gilberto, an artist I like. The 11 minute studio sessions bonus track of TGFI was great.
I still don't know what to do with Frank Sinatra. It kind of all sounds the same to me, but I hate that criticism. It's not my favorite thing, but I don't dislike it. And I guess I'm supposed to respect him and his work, cuz he's Frank fucking Sinatra, but I just don't know...I'm going with four cuz three just doesn't seem fair. 4
If you were wondering if this is Frank Sinatra’s bossa nova album, The Girl from Ipanema is on here four times.
Really nice album, but it’s kinda slow for me.
7/10 Favorite: The Girl From Ipanema
This is some quality music. A magically smooth mix of two of the best in their industry. What I'd give to have been in a concert hall with Sinatra and Jobim seeing them perform together, as I just saw on YouTube (check out the Frank Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim Medley).
turn on the samba jets
Frank is such a mood
Yea it’s pretty solid
bossanatra
I love bossa nova. I love Frank Sinatra. Needs more Portuguese tho.
i like frank sinatra
beautuful
I love Sinatra’s voice. The vibe of this album was very classic and reminiscent of a simpler time— it had me feeling nostalgia for an era I’ll never know.
This is what’s playing in the Phillies diner. Or echoing around De Chirico’s streets. Or inside Marvin the Martian’s interstellar base. It’s music that belongs inside a dream; enough to send you into one. Beautiful, otherworldly.
so relaxing
Beautiful all the way through, though with a lot of samey-sounding tracks- started to blend together a bit by halfway in. Highlights: Girl from Ipanema, Dindi, Agua de Beber, Wave, One Note Samba (i just think it's cute)
wow I love bossa nova it’s so beautiful. same with singing Portuguese it sounds so pretty and smooth. Also this is an amazing combo of artists - their individual styles work so well together. I find this album to be like a little bland and probably better as background music though. Fav songs: the girl from ipanema, change partners, I concentrate on you
I loved it. Honestly it went by so fast. But this is like the original emo music. Sad music for sad bois.
nice
Całkiem przyjemne. Takie 4. Trzy utwory warte częstszego posłuchania.
The Girl From Impanema! Very enjoyable Bossa Nova with Sinatra flair.
No surprises here - just what I expected. It's not exciting, but it's lovely and it's soothing and I enjoyed it. It's good that Jobim gets equal billing. The inclusion of the album here probably means that more people like me will look Jobim up and find out that, apparently, he invented bossa nova. And wrote *that* song. And worked with Getz and Gilberto. I guess I should have registered his name before. Of course, bossa nova was a bit of a joke to cool kids like me in the 80s. It was also a button you could press on most 80s keyboards. But, done authentically, with actual instruments, it's so nice. The musicianship on the album is lovely; quite understated, really. And Frank does have a marvellous voice. Oh, I'm getting old.
I love these songs so much. Especially Dindi. But it’s hard to listen to them sung in English which removes the veil a bit. Leave the girl from Ipanema alone, she doesn’t want you, Frank
i never sought out these songs but i've heard snippets hear and there. it's nice to listen to them in full and understand why they've stood the test of time.
Album 1012 of 1089 Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim (1967) Rating : 4 / 5 I’ve always enjoyed Frank Sinatra, and his I Remember Tommy album remains one of my favorites, so I came into this one already on friendly terms. Frank’s voice here is as smooth and confident as ever, and he doesn’t disappoint. This album leans heavily into romantic ballads, beautifully framed by Jobim’s lush yet restrained arrangements. The orchestra is soothing without being sleepy, and everything is designed to serve the vocals - which is exactly where the focus should be. It’s an easy, graceful listen that never tries to be more than it is. No, this isn’t an earth-shattering album, but that’s not the point. It’s simply another opportunity to spend some time with one of the greatest voices music has ever produced, in a setting that suits him perfectly. Sinatra fans will enjoy it, and even non-fans would do well to give it a spin.
Hands down the greatest elevator music album of all time! All jokes aside, this is a nice album. Beautiful arrangements and great vocals from the Chairman of the Board. I’ll basically give almost anything from the sixties a good score.
9/10 very cozy and cute
Very nostalgic and romantic. I’d deliberately avoided Sinatra because I’d written him off as music of the time with no substances. Like some sort of 90s Eurostar but in the 50s. I was wrong. I can’t help but dance.
a mix of standards from traditional pop and bossa nova , all arranged with a similar mixture of the two genres. i rly only have one coherent thought ab this record, which is that the genre melding is shockingly effortless. the timbres click together just like that and bring out new strengths in the other, the lavishness of the easy listening is enlivened by the pure warmth of the bossa nova. and not to undersell the collaboration (most of these songs Were written by jobim in the first place), but its hard to ignore that it is sinatra's show, his infamous hyper-perfectionism in arrangement and his vocal performances being the final glue that holds everything together...he makes sure u dont miss a word and that every sound comes through with maximum clarity. for sure a great example of "background music" that also has the muscle to be listened to intentionally for pleasure.
What a beautifully arranged album. I felt like I was in a lounge in the 60s in Vegas. It was fantastic even if I don’t listen to a ton of frank sinatra
Ooh jazz I like. Ya like jazz? This is very La La Land (It's just jazz) He has a very soothing voice. I wonder what he sounds like when he talks? Is he dead? I think so. Are all the albums on this list so old? I like the story that How Insensitive is telling. This is peak so far. A very consistently good album throughout. I love this medley, really cool compilation of all the tracks in one. I love listening to the same song three times in one song. He was the goat with this album my ears are very happy.
There are times when I discover when a long, difficult to listen to album is actually an extended special edition and I will often listen only to the tracks that were on the original version. In this case, I was enjoying it so much I discovered that there was a "complete recordings" version and I listened to that one. Not sure if it was the nostalgia of reminding me of being at my grandparents house but I vibed with it. Side note... in another great edition of blustery Spotify biographers the first line of Frank Sinatra's is "arguably the most important musical figure of the 20th century." Sorry Chairman, but I don't think there is an argument for that.
Dope
4.5
Perfectly pleasant crooning.
Crowning classics
Sinatra and Jobim prove a fine pair on this melancholic, lovelorn album of bossa nova arranged originals and standards. Smooth and softly swinging, this album goes down easy.
I am still trying to ascertain whether or not I really like Sinatra and others of his ilk. I do like many of his more well-known songs, but am not so familiar with the full range of his repertoire. This album is very nice, and I'm sure I will listen to it again at some point, but it's not something I would want in my collection.
Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim recorded an album together that is quite enjoyable to listen to. It is essentially a Frank Sinatra album with bossa nova songs, which works well, but in my opinion is no improvement on his standard/swing recordings. The recording of “Girl From Ipanema” is, of course, extremely well known, but after that there is not much else that deserves special mention. As I said, it's not bad, but in my opinion, any other Sinatra album could have been included here.
Gut aber schnell totgehört
What a delight. Frank Sinatra is such a legend. Antonio Carlos is like the salt in your food that gives you satisfaction.
