Reviews (page 8 of 8)

I'm usually a Sinatra enjoyer, but this one was pretty dull.

The coolness is there, but personally, Frankie is not for bossa nova. It's already clear in its opener, their (bad) version of "A Girl from Ipanema". Even I was surprised at how boring this was, overall. He's a great singer, but again, bossa nova is a different field. So nice try I guess.

Even though I love both Sinatra and Tom Jobin, this album was pretty dissapointing. I was accustomed to hearing most of these songs in Portuguese, even when performed by non-Brazilians, so hearing them being sung in English was kinda weird, but that's not the problem. The problem is that Sinatra simply cannot adapt to bossa nova, and he's often heard visibly struggling with it in a way that's distracting, not relaxing.

TFW no Astrud Gilberto I like Frank (In The Wee Small Hours is an all time favorite) but this is just not working.

It's a good album, but too oldie for me for regular listens.

Whatever. This list is getting sus.

Under 30 mins? Right of the gates, this album has my attention. But then it’s Frank Sinatra and I find him to be “meh” as a singer. Compared to modern singers, Sinatra doesn’t really hold a candle to their skills. Even compared to his contemporaries, Sinatra doesn’t really stand out. The crossover with Jobim makes the album more charming, with a song like “The Girl From Ipanema” being refreshed, but the album as a whole seems like an intro class on how to be a lounge act 101. The album ended out of nowhere (again, 28 minutes is so fast) and most of the songs had merged and felt like one track. Not a bad album, not a great one…at least it was short!

Just not to my taste

Generally like both artists but this combination didn't work for me.

A FS album with a bossanova beat in the background. The combination with the lush strings seem a bit odd to me. 2

meh, teveel van hetzelfde.

I haven't read anything about this release, but I would expect that Frank wanted to jump on the Jobim bandwagon since "The girl...." was such a massive hit and everyone was recording it. Jobim of course would have concurred since it gave him more exposure and partnering with American artists had benefitted him in the past. Anyway I prefer Frank's earlier work. He's no Astrud Gilberto (although in fact he has more range as a singer but not so much at this point in his career).

Every song sounded lovely but the same.

I listened to this yesterday and can't really remember it at all

Sinatra doing bossanova jazz, perhaps not such a good combination. This sounded very uninspiring to me.

p115. 1967. 2 stars Well, the voice is fantastic, but this isn't his best work. Frank barely breaks a sweat, and sounds half asleep in a lot of the songs, and the arrangements pale in comparison to those of Nelson Riddle. Each track sounds the same as the one before, and the bossa nova vibe hasn't aged well. It's bland, and that ain't good.

I like a few Sinatra songs but couldn't really enjoy this album. If you like Sinatra and the style, I'm sure it may be fantastic but I found it to be a bit too slow and sad for my tastes, with most songs blending into the next one and nothing that really stood out much (with The Girl From Ipanema being the exception).

I don't really like Frank Sinatra...

Jeez have not got an interesting album in weeks

Back by popular demand, Frank Sinatra is back to appeal to two trends that the aging crooner population and Grammy judges can yet again eat up. Sinatra combines his ballad style of classic dramatic strings and smooth voice with the jazzy waiting room music of Jobim's bossa nova. For reference, Jobim is the guy who popularized Bossa Nova, composing the songs on Getz/Gilberto, including "The Girl from Impanena." It sounds really good, but thankfully it's only 28 minutes. They don't take the formula too far. It's pretty repetitive, and Jobim only served as backup, in the background and not diversifying as much as I'd like. They try to spice it up with bells and whistles, but the guitar straight up sounds the same on many tracks. Favorites: Change Partners, I Concentrate on You

I mean, it's undeniable he's got a great voice, but there just doesn't seem to be much life to the songs. Dull and kind of uninspired, most of the best songs are the ones from the Great American Songbook. Also, how many times can he sing 'The Girl From Ipanema?' It's a great song (written and first performed by someone else), but I mean come on. Get some variety in there. This album lost the Grammy to 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,' and rightfully so.

Found this just a bit dull

I've never been a fan of Sinatra and this album didn't change my mind. Not so bad I wanted to turn it off, though

This 1967 album from Frank Sinatra is performed by an orchestra in the bossa nova style. It was a well produced album that highlights Frank's singing voice and gives the listener a broad range of his music to appreciate it. In my opinion I didn't find any songs on this album sticking out to me, but it was a great album to listen to while relaxing.

bossa-nova standards, not thrilling

I get why people would enjoy this. I do not.

Swanky. Worth a listen but not gonna live in my long term memory for long.

Frekar litlaust.

Frank has a classic voice. But the songs and the lyrical content hasn’t aged well. I feel like I’m at a stuffy boring dinner party full of accountants and mortgage brokers who think they’re so sophisticated. This crooner shit ain’t for me.

flott eða eitthvað

not in his strings

Not for me. Can’t listen to if for that long. I know Frank Sinatra but it’s more elevator music to me

My Dad would have got a kick out of me listening to this for sure. I can respect it but it just doesn't do anything for me.

This was fun for a listen

Ol’ blue eyes is a brilliant crooner and has a mellifluous voice, but I find listening to this like being in a lift in an enormous hotel and it is going nowhere really slowly.

I can appreciate the talent that went into this. It's fine in the background, but I don't see myself seeking it out.

Didn’t know there was a Sinatra bossa nova album. Not my favorite version of The Girl From Ipanema, but it’s still always a banger

Sinatra's heart wasn't in it, and neither was mine.

Sinatra has always reminded me of loser guys who think crooning and smelling like old spice is "dapper". The sort of guys that wouldn't use quotes when saying the word "dapper". So I've always just kinda written his music off as a load of shit by proxy. Never heard anything beyond the big hits. Realistically though, it's just a bit of a boring collection of oldies crud. Maybe it IS "dapper", I dunno. Or care. 2/5.

Not my cuppa

This stuff is really boring to me

This is an album where I liked the less well known songs.

Not really my thing, mostly sound the same to me. Girl from Ipanema slaps though

Very pleasant samba swing but somewhat forgettable.

A generous 2 as he was singing bossanova instead of his usual rubbish

Aburrido

Lovely but very samey. Won't revisit.

Not an unpleasant listen but more lift muzak than something I would choose to listen to.

Mum and Dad would like this!

Sinatra definitely has a great voice, but I just can't get much out of this. It hasn't aged very well and just sounds sooo old. I did like Quiet Night Of Quiet Stars, maybe because it has a more full-bodied sound than the rest of the album.

Nice music, a bit boring in the end though. Frank has a beautiful warm voice, but the man really can hit the notes. He is actually a terrible singer.

Herkenbaar is natuurlijk "The Girl from Ipanema", maar de nummers "Change Partners" en "I Concentrate on You" zijn ook leuk. **

3/10 Frankies snoozer album

Frank sounds like Frank even when he pairs up with a Brazilian musician. Fun fact, this album lost out to "Sgt. Pepper" for the 1968 Grammy.

Every bit as precious as the title suggests. Give me Mrs. Miller singing the praises of the bossa nova over this any day.

Not exactly a criticism, but i just have no need to listen to this ever again.

*Won't you change partners and dance with me?* Bossa Nova gir meg ikke så mye assa.

Favourite Song: The Girl from Ipanema

Sounds like Mad Men waiting room muzak. Not my bag.

Like being in an endless lift.

An inoffensive 28 minutes of Frank Sinatra's dulcet tones with a South American twist. Cool album cover.

he did have a lovely voice. not for me thought. not even the dodgy gangster connections could make him listenable.

Listenable Sinatra due to the latin vibe

- pleasant but....

Tedious, even by old crooner standards. It's harmless, but it does nothing I don't expect, even on songs I haven't heard before. I know exactly what the melody will do, what word rhymes will be used, where the tune will go. I assume this wasn't the case upon its release, but it is now. When I hum aimlessly to myself, this is how it sounds.

Slow and crooning. Something you would put on to impress a date, but not listen to besides that

well its frank

Just fine.

Not my favorite style from Sinatra but he's still a legend.

Not really feeling it, but sounded alright

Pretty slow boring music

I'll never understand Sinatra's popularity...

Lounge music to have a cocktail by

Meh, too slow for me

These have to be one of the worst lyrics I've heard... and it's booooooooooooooooring and repetitive. Giving 2 stars because I do enjoy the beat sometimes and they might have influenced Jack Johsnon, but that's it.

smooooooooth bossa nova is a pretty specific mood genre though, so it sounds good and is a classic but it's not something i'd necessarily put on a lot

Nice vocals but it wasn’t for me tbh

Besides a couple of the alternate versions of Impanema, it sounds like Ol' Blue Eyes was phoning it in.

Haha wow this is smarmy music

Not for me, didn't enjoy it.

Bosta nova

Frank is the new Valium

Frank Sinatra as a musician isn’t awful, but as a human, he’s kinda terrible. This album is not his best work. It’s boring, a bit creepy, and it just kinda sucks.

Frank has a great voice, but boy this was a slog. Other than the first song, they all sound exactly the same, and are just not engaging in any way. All respect to these guys, but this sucks to listen to.

Soft bossa nova and traditional pop built on gentle acoustic guitar, light orchestration, subtle percussion, and smooth, controlled vocals flows with understated elegance. Listening feels like sitting in a perfectly arranged lounge where nothing ever disrupts the calm, but nothing truly draws you in either. The result is refined and pleasant, yet so slow and disengaging that it becomes boring.

Hier soir j'écoutais Dogtooth, film troublant de Yorgos Lanthimos, dans lequel on peut entendre Fly Me to the Moon de Sinatra. Coïncidemment, ce matin, j'ai cet album à écouter. Horreur et violence psychologique. 4.5 étoiles pour Dogtooth. Sinatra j'haïs ça pour mourir.

in this horrible world we live in, this downtempo holiday tropical sunrise sandy beach doodleydoo, one song after another, feels just totally out of place and is unbearable to listen to. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION ON THIS MATTER!

Elevator music

Background music….

We’re in a one star doom loop. Tom.

Why does he sing like he's recovering from a stroke? Open your mouth man! Give it some welly! You might even enjoy it. Basically, this is rubbish. Standards from the songbook done in a half-arsed way while indulging in a spot of cultural appropriation. I'm sure ACJ is very good and worthy, but it just Sinatra's all over the place and I can't bear it.

I hated almost every second of this, and my streaming version had two bonus tracks that were both takes on “girl from ipanema,” which may be my single least favorite song in the canon. I listened to one of them before I caught my mistake. If 0s were permitted, this would be a 0.

Frank Sinatra's voice is pleasant. That's all I have to say. 1/5

Today’s album: Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim by Frank Sinatra and Antônio Carlos Jobim. And honestly… I was not looking forward to this. I’ve never really got Sinatra. I don’t find him smooth or cool, and the whole King of Croon thing has never worked for me at all. Musically, this album is undeniably classy. The arrangements are beautiful and everything is impeccably played. But that’s also the problem. It’s all so similar, so polite, and ultimately very dull. Once you’ve heard a minute of it, you’ve pretty much heard the lot. Nothing here makes me want to come back for another listen. Favourite track: The Girl from Ipanema is a genuinely good song and a strong way to open the album. Unfortunately, after that it all just blends into the same laid-back haze with no real variation or spark. Least favourite tracks: Once I Loved and anything else that sounds exactly like it – pleasant, but painfully boring. Album artwork: A classic cover, at least.

Awful. I’ve no idea why anyone likes Sinatra

It's just Frank.

Not my cup of tea. Very tentative themes with the lyrics.

Poor Antonio Carlos Jobim - your name and fine bossa nova tunes ruined by a crooner who wanted to revive his career by doing something new, that wasn't new at all, and trashed all your lovely songs. 1/5

Was this an album, or just the same song 10 times in a row?

feels like xmas songs, comfy vibe, but im not feeling it

Smooth vocals from an icon, of that there can be little dispute, but when you consider what else was going on in 1967, this is fairly inconsequential stuff. Here, Sinatra is on a vaguely misogynistic bossa nova tip - can't really fault the execution, but the content must have seemed dated and dull to anyone who mattered even back then. Hard to believe two albums on this list both open with The Girl from Ipanema, much less that I have drawn both of them in the space of a fortnight.

Lift music. Nah

The superlative that have been used to describe this man are too numerous to contemplate, and all completely UNJUSTIFIED. God this was awful! Morrisey come back, all is forgiven! This was so depressing! Its no wonder he needed the mafia to launch his career, no talent scout would have spotted him. Bearing in mind I found something positive to say about pil, you can guess where im going with the score for this one.

Thanks for providing a completely unwanted ear worm on track one. Thankfully the rest of the album just descended into a white noise level of dull, which hopefully has removed it.

This quickly faded into the background, to the point where I took a little while to realise it had actually finished. I suppose this is what people call 'easy listening', so easy you don't even notice you're listening at all.

Eh, this is pretty damn awful. One or two of the tunes aren't all that bad (Ipanema is a good one), and the inclusion of Jobim lifts one or two of them out of the utter banality that characterises the rest of the album. But the banality is the impression I take away with me.

We LOVE Latin flavours. Typically, I really don’t enjoy Latin music, and while I’m sure today will be no exception, I feel like as a white guy I need to explicitly state that despite my lack of enjoyment, that in no way makes the expression invalid. See, internet? Was that so hard? Ugh let’s get this over with. Girl from Ipanema - What’s the over under for how many times this song will appear on this list. I’ll take the over. This song should be sung by a woman. I preferred that version anyway. Tall, tan, something and lovely. Just like me. Dindi - Sloggers, rise up. We love a good painful slog through the interminable here, don’t we? Change Partners - Pass. Gross cheater anthem. Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado) - I’d be very worried if the stars could be heard from earth. We might have some bigger issues, like the imminent collapse of our planet. God, at least that might wake me up for a second. Meditation - I thought it said “Mediation” for a minute. This music does conjure up divorce proceedings. If You Never Come to Me (Intutil Paisagen) - Oh my god has the song changed?? How Insensitive (Insensatez) - Are the phrases in parentheses Frank Sinatra’s guess at Spanish? Or is it just Portuguese? I just ask rhetorical questions to try to stimulate some level of thought. This is like mainlining melatonin. I Concentrate on You - Orange Juice commercial type song title. Minor life detected. Wait, the fortune nay-nayed? It was written in the ancient scrolls that a spirit would whip with the intensity that fortunes nay-nayed. Listen, this is all I have. I’m sorry for my words. Baubles, Bangles, and Beads - Baubles. Excellent word. Real consonant enjoyers are having a field day here. B is a superior letter to most. Don’t get me started on G’s. Also good in the right measure. In combination??? Buggles? Incredible. Thanks for the random sound effects Antonio. Once I Loved (O Amor Em Paz) - Holy hell. Do you think all the Antonio Carlos Jobim heads were fucking amped for this crossover? I would imagine most of the Frankie fans were pretty oblivious, but Jobim nation had to be ready for a beast of a record. I can’t even believe how boring this record is. It’s almost impressive. Frankie is like 12 Valium deep here and the instrumental literally sounds like it’s being recorded from outside the elevator it’s playing in. You take a near comatose former star and pair him with the sleepiest guitarist this side of São Paulo and you’ve got yourself an audible Ambien. This album was 28 minutes, which we know is an infinity in the dream world. Sleep-RUN don’t sleepwalk to a thrift store or evil streaming corp near you and listen to the shiftless shamblings of bedtime’s sleepiest duo. Nightcap and candle holder sold separately. 1.5 HIGHLIGHTS: A restful slumber

Incel 101. Som å høre maling tørke.

Bit too mellow for my taste. Didn't like the mix (vocals too high and instruments, especially guitar and bass, too low).

I've never liked Frank Sinatra and this album did nothing to change my opinion of this over-rated hack. Five versions of "The Girl from Ipanema" is beyond excessive. Absolute shite!

I was pretty excited to finally receive some Bossa Nova, but very unenthusiastic that it was this album (which barely feels like a Bossa Nova album). A quick search shows that there are a few other Bossa Nova records on the 1001AYHBYD list (like "Getz/Gilberto"!), but I got this one first. I would gladly throw this off the list for a better record by a Bossa Nova artist who isn't otherwise included, like "Wave" by Antonio Carlos Jobim (if we want to keep ACJ on the list), "Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66" by Sergio Mendes, or almost any early selection by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass. These other records could offer a far better primer on Bossa Nova than you get here. Frank has two other albums on this list and including this cash-grab snoozefest is over-generous. In fact, I'll argue that this record is a direct rebuttal to the success of Herb Alpert & TJB in 1966, and its existence is a prime example of why Herb Alpert should be on this list! For the week of May 21, 1966, Herb Alpert & TJB had 5 albums in the Billboard Top 20: Whipped Cream & Other Delights(1), What Now My Love(2), Going Places(4), South Of The Border(17), and The Lonely Bull(20). And Billboard's list of top-selling albums at the end of 1966 included 3 in the top 5: Whipped Cream & Other Delights(1), Going Places(3), and What Now My Love(5) - eclipsing Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Barbara Streisand, and The Mamas and the Papas. Even if you don't like Herb Alpert, or Bossa Nova, it's impossible to argue that his sound wasn't king-for-a-day in 1966. And in that light, it's ridiculous that this album is included but not a single TJB albums is on this list. #JusticeForHerb

Frankie sure has a voice, but this one is a real snoozer. Hard to believe something this slow could go downhill so quickly and even harder to believe it almost won the Grammy for best album of 1968. Made it through on a quiet Sunday morning, but not by much. He nearly put us (and himself) to sleep. Glad when the last song was over. L = (0.5*s) Very weak song selection. He sang Off Key off key, so that was stupid. J = (0.8*s) I’m sure I didn’t have to hear this album before I die.

Francis was just a slow crooner that was for some reason the rage in the 50s. No way he held up in the 60s though with Sgt. Pepper released the same year as this album. Popular with just with the old smoking, martini generation but not the youngstas. Can't get behind this combo record in any way but I understand the duo was considered powerhouses in their genres. Johnny O liked Sinatra but he was from an "old" fogey family and I think he liked the cool image and not the music per se. Probably getting more albums from the Rat Pack on the list but I'm done with Frankie...0.45 stars.

About what I expected from Sinatra. I don't think I'm much of a fan since I find so much of this just forgettable music from another era. It sounded really repetitive even on a short 28 minute length. After the first song I felt like I got it and just had to listen to the same thing over an over. To echo prior review I'm sure this was influential in its time but nowadays its just a time capsule to the past. 1.15 stars

Lift music?

I still don't get crooning

Might disappoint my dad with this one

I could not like this less, it completely bores me. 1 star or F.

Don't care for those two.

This feels like Frank Sinatra singing in an elevator over the random music running in it.

I thoroughly dislike Sinatra

This was a rough one, luckily it was short. Both ing songs sung over boring music.

Very repetitive

Not for me. 1/5

1 Star (2/15)

Not my vibe

Turns out combining two boring schmaltzy genres gets you a schmaltzy boring album.

Not for me.

Höre ich nicht! Kann ich nicht bewerten!

Maybe it is a sign of the times, but I found this unlistenable. I really like Frank Sinatra (or maybe I like his voice? Idk I like his hits..), but this album was not the best Frank Sinatra. Every time I start to get into a song the lyrics are just so cliche and trivial I feel bad listening to it. “I watch her so sadly… I’d give my heart gladly.” That line itself has to be on the album like 10 times. Too many yes men made this album. I assume it’s groundbreaking in some way I don’t understand, but the effort was not put into the composition for Frank’s vocals/lyrics. You can throw Adele on a track, but if she’s going to sing hot cross buns for 46 minutes, I don’t need to listen to it.

Sorry guys, this was not for me.

I think we have to call a spade a spade, Jobim was an incel. Well, at least, much like "80s movie hijinks were mostly just rape" these faded post WW2 tropes play much differently today. This also feels like the classic cash grab. Maybe it's just my strong dislike for the dinner jacket schmaltz that came to dominate the tail end of big band, but the whole thing feels kinda mailed in.

Felt okay about getting a Sinatra album, thinking “ahh some big band type shit will rouse me after my last few picks” but no, this is some weird easy listening record which was putting me to sleep by track 5. Sorry, Frank. Do better.

Elevator music.

Don't mind a bit of swing, but this is just awful. Dull and boring and goes nowhere. Gave up half-way through zzzzz

Elevator music for old people in vegas.

Dude I don’t want to listen to this. Why is it important? How does this possibly reflect the zeitgeist of 1967? Who cares 57 years later? If it is not necessary to eat at a mediocre Italian restaurant where the owner plays accordion while maintaining eye contact on slow nights before you die, then I should not have to listen to the music he’s playing along with.

Dean martin baby!!!!!

This just isn't the frank sinatra I want. I want the bombastic, leg kicking frank. This is just dull.

Music to turn the life support off to.

Dangerously close to a William Shatner album

There’s something so incredibly insincere about Sinatra’s songs. Everyone seems to find him so charming with his crooning but I see thru your act Frank, you swarmy pompous fuck. The only decent song on this album isn’t even his, he just took a good song in Girl From Impanema and made it worse. I truly hope this is the last album of Sinatra’s I have to listen to, Frank is a creep, he is not essential, overhyped trash from a period people enjoyed creepy crooners. Fuck you Frank 1 star

Same year as cap beef. Interesting. Sinatra was a top artist for me this year according to Spotify. I don't feel like I listened to any Sinatra this year tho. I really don't like this orchestral accompaniment. Yeah I'm gonna leave this after like 3 songs. Sorry frank not your best stuff stick to the hits.

The way I feel about this kind of music, is the way you probably feel about Alice Cooper, Hair Bands and Metal. I just can't. DNF

This sucks

I wanted to hate this. I despise Sinatra and all the banality that he stands for. I wasn't won over by this album. I might have tolerated it as an instrumental.

Blud kuullostaa aina samalta + ei täs oikee säväyttänä ngl

Not a Frank fan

Sinatra smarm. I hate it.

Bossa nova hirvittää, ja Sinatra kuulostaa päälle läiskätyltä.

Got a couple of songs in and just couldn't cope, just nit me bag.

Boring crooning.

Imagine actually liking Frank Sinatra lol.

Not a fan of Bossa Nova

Frank sucks

Well that was a massive waste of my time. I got nothing from this album and listening to it was the longest half an hour of my life. Halfway through I just put it on as background noise and started playing Civ 6.

I like Frank. I didn't like this at all.

There was not one exciting song on this album. Next time I want to be put to sleep I’ll pull this up.

I suppose every now and then if I'm in the right mood and frame of mind for this album, or just about anything performed by Frank Sinatra, I could appreciate it; however, I'm so sorry to say to the many people I've met who just adore Frank Sinatra...he's not someone I care to listen to all that much.

Was this the origin of muzak? Or did they just contribute? Either way it's an unexciting ride.

Ai meu deus, this is not good. This may have been the first fusion album, but it does not work nor hold up well. Sinatra and Jobim sound like they were recorded in different studios. The most basic of bossa nova rhythms arranged with outdated (in 1967) strings do not fit, Sinatra's voice does not fit the faux bossa nova vibe. Overall sounds like an attempt at Brazilian music for gringos.

Fuck no.

I was forced to listen to a lot of Sinatra in high school. I still hate Sinatra.

Tedium incarnate. The second side may have been better than the first but I'll never know cos I gave up before then.

The bossa nova sound of this album is interesting for like 5 minutes but soon becomes annoying. A song will fade out but seem to start up again because all the songs start and end the same. It’s actually funny how noticeable it is that the same drums and guitars play over every song. Something band kids play.

Not Frankie's finest hour... creepy songs about obession over women who clearly aren't interested (not charming lol), the weird attempt at bossa nova stay in your lane mate. This isn't the usual soothing charming Frank, it's just boring. Glad this isn't his only album on this list because I love him, just not on this album.

Soothing, it is quite nice for a change. I was unable to sustain my listening. I needed more grrrrrr..

I understand the appeal, but not for me Very chill beat

I just find this really boring. His voice is smooth but so monotone and emotionless.

Another boring one-note album. Best track: The Girl from Ipanema

Not for me.

The first few seconds were great, I love Jobim, then Sinatra's stupid voice had to ruin everything

Not for me

Love this album. I've not listened to Frank Sinatra at length before. But all I want to do is slow shuffle dance with Erica with this in the background. SUPER GOOD
