Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim
Frank Sinatra, Antônio Carlos Jobim
Reviews (page 4 of 8)
These songs are charming, and fun to listen to the two together. The best ones are the ones where they both sing. Take 'Baubles' off and it's a much better album.
This was a nice combination, I think I like it better than just solo Sinatra actually. Spanish guitar and rhythmic elements add a lot. Lounge-y as all hell, in a good way. It's close to a 4 but really about a 3.5 and up. I probably won't listen to it again, but I enjoyed it for sure. Definitely heard "The Girl from Ipanema" before.
sophisticated
Very nice, relaxing and fun
Here's my biggest takeaway -- bossa nova is probably not my go-to genre of music. I will say this - the quality of the songwriting is stellar, it's just not what I'd generally seek out to listen to. So my rating here is based on merit rather than personal taste.
Lovely album, very easy on the ear. Sinatra's voice is of course peerless and who can resist bossa nova? Not sure I would buy this, it isn't really my thing, but I would be up on the dance floor for sure
Very romantic
Very, very smooth. Good album.
Everyone knows who Frank Sinatra is. Who is Antônio Carlos Jobim? For starters, he's the original songwriter of The Girl From Ipanema, which is a legendary bossa nova song that has since become one of the most recorded songs in history. Sinatra and Jobim do a joint English-Portuguese rendition on this album (can you tell who sings in which language?), and do a wonderful job. For my money, the Stan Getz version sung by Astrud Gilberto is the better performance, but Sinatra still does a wonderful job. Aside from The Girl From Ipanema, Jobim's greatest achievement would be his popularization of bossa nova outside of Brazil. It would be, in part, thanks to Getz that bossa nova would catch on in the States during the early/mid-60's. This almost certainly caught the attention of Sinatra or some Reprise executive, which lead to what we have here. The songs are so breezy and wonderful, and Sinatra's cool voice is a natural fit. Even if the songs were originally written for Portuguese tongue, the English translation rarely feels clunky or out of place. Arrangements are also excellent, with Claus Ogerman conducting the band for Jobim's songs. It's also worth mentioning that there are a few American Songbook songs on the album as well, done in the bossa nova style. If you asked me to identify them, I probably wouldn't be able to because they fit so well. In every way, Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim is a match made in heaven. A beautiful album that is pleasing to the ears.
Lovely songs for chilling
Rólegt og gott hjá Frank.
Great team up! It feels like a real logical thing to do.
Great listen! Legend!
Favourite track(s): The Girl From Ipanema; Baugles, Bangles and Beads For people not familiar with Bossa Nova, this album can serve as a nice introduction. It has the Sinatra instrumentation with its longing strings and soft brass instruments. But it is certainly no more than an introduction. This is clearly a Sinatra album and while Jobim's name is in the title, his impact seems limited. The Girl From Ipanema being the opener, one might suspect that the studio chose to rely on another artist's work, only putting a little twist on Sinatra's regular style in order to sell more copies. Maybe that is why the tracks which seem to have been written by and for Jobim in part do not strike one as all to special. Maybe both artist saw eye to eye on later releases. I would have liked the album even better if that was the case here. But still, it's Bossa Nova Sinatra. I cannot not like that.
Who'd have thought that Frank doing some bossa nova standards would sound so good?
80/100
A very simple album that is very enjoyable. Nothing extra. Just nice orchestral sections and nice vocal performances. Also PSA if you’re writing 4 pages about an album on this list… no one is reading it. Stop treating this like a job. Goofy
10/16/22 Can’t go wrong
My cup of tea
Pretty good
Gotta love Frank. Smooth as always. The bossa nova that Jobim adds to the record make it stand out above the rest.
Flott lög og notalegar útsetningar. Ég er enginn sérstakur aðdándi Frankieboys, en það verður ekki tekið af honum að hann gerir þetta smekklega.
I like the sound and the feel of this decade.
cant understand the not frank part
Sinatra + Jobim + Bossanova is a beautiful sounding combination.
Very pleasant.
A very relaxing listening experience. 8/10
Was good. Not the usual genre I listen to. Very relaxing 😌
3.5/5. This was fine. I was an interesting blend of Bossa Nova and class Sinatra. Overall, this is decent, but nothing mind blowing.
Really dig the combination of their sounds here. Bossa Nova fits well with Sinatra's voice.
I felt like a main character in a 70s romantic version of The Notebook except I never had a love and just fell in love with my novel collection.
Exactly what I'd expect from Frank... walking through the city at night with snow falling.
The Girl From Ipanema - 7/10 Dindi - 8/10 Change Partners - 7/10 Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado) - 6/10 Meditation - 8/10 If You Never Come To Me (Inutil Paisagen) - 6/10 How Insensitive (Insensatez) - 9/10 I Concentrate On You - 9/10 Baubles, Bangles, and Beads - 9/10 Once I Loved (O Amor Em Paz) - 6/10 Sinatra/Jobim Medley - 10/10
Something soothing and nostalgic about Sinatra's voice
Not Frank’s bes,t but I could listen to this all day.
A couple of Great American Songbook classics, a touch of easy cool bossa nova and Sinatra's inimitable swing amounts to a great album. 4 stars because it is not too long - any longer and there would be too much filler. As it is, there is a little dip around halfway through.
Heerlijk zomers album. 'The Girls from Ipanema' heeft de hele dag in mijn hoofd gezeten 4*
It's nostalgia week apparently.. I've listen to a ton of Sinatra in my life, most of it not by choice. I definitely over the years learn to appreciate his music and dare I say enjoy some of it. Sinatra recorded a ton albums and murdered a ton of songs, this album however isn't one, I enjoyed it. I really enjoyed Jobim arrangements. Might be one of the few people under 75 that likes this.
It's no secret that I love Frank Sinatra, but this is not him in his best light. Never been the biggest fan of Bossa Nova either. 4
Probably the best voice there has ever been. Not my sort of music, though.
Nice, laid back listening with lovely bossa nova arrangements. Perfect for a Sunday morning.
Feels like very casual music to me, and I like that about it. Sinatra's voice is really smooth, and the instrumentation is pretty lush. Highlights: 1, 3, and 7.
Croon Street
What a voice!
Very smooth, and very chill. Two great artists bouncing off each other in harmony.
It was very good
Pretty classic.
skuzila sam da je album bossa nova pa sam ipak poslusala hehe. Naravno da mi se jako svidilo.
Sinatra versionando canciones.
Absolute classic! Jobim and Sinatra are a great duo and their version of Girl from Ipanema is a must listen.
This was a very pleasant surprise. Knowing the big band sound Sinatra usually gives, this was different, that bossa nova style. The Girl From Ipanema is pretty much required if you're playing bossa nova, though, isn't it? The one song, "Wave".... Frank really went for that low note, didn't he? He was almost at the legendary brown note, he was singing so low. And he kept NAILING it. Really dug this, it was nice to hear, something to listen to on a quiet Sunday afternoon, except for maybe "Wave." That "cling togeTHERRRRR" would be a little disturbing.
Haven't heard much Frank Sinatra or Bossa Nova beforehand but it sounds like combining the two makes some beautiful music.
2 ganz Große. Nicht der ganz große Wurf.
Lovely piece of work, if a little sedate.
The Girl from Impanea is a classic! I feel like I've heard a lot of these from movies. Makes me want to drink a martini and hit the dance floor and sit in a big red leather booth.
Oh bossa nova grooves and Sinatra swooning over it - what’s not to like - end to end lovely record
I thought this was very lovely and relaxing!
Not his best but still a classic listen
Great and smooth album. Some nice bossanova as well. Feels like christmas in New York.
Francis Albert Sinatra... Esa no me la esperaba jajaja. Frank Sinatra cantando bossa... Personal: 8.
I was not expecting to like this, but lay that melancholy upon me! This album luxuriates with infinite sadness, like you're heartbroken but you're lying on the beach in Rio so it's not wholly bad. Each song takes it time, taking the listener one step deeper into sadness. There is no solution, not upbeat "you'll get over it" vibes. No, the album leaves you on that beach with tears in your eyes and the realisation that being there means nothing when there's no one by your side.
This is lovely, but it's essentially twelve versions of the same song. One tempo, one mood. Slightly melancholy, very romantic.
4 stars because Frank Sinatra is good, not really my cup of tea though.
Sinatra's voice is perfection.
American, 70s, Jazz/Bossa nova + Legend, wonderful, relax = Male, restaurant - Alike {2/12}
A fascinating record and an opportunity for Sinatra to show a softer, quieter side compared with his usual belting vocals. And whilst this album doesn’t hit the heights of his run of albums on the Capitol label, this is one of Sinatra’s better releases on his own Reprise label. Expressive and moving, Insensitive is a real highlight, fitting neatly alongside a slow tempo I Concentrate On You. The orchestrations throughout are marvellous and Jobim’s guitar playing is enchanting. What a special talent he was.
I can't say that I ever expected to hear a Frank Sinatra album like this, but it works really well. 4/5
Sinatra versionando canciones.
Always smooth Sinatra sings several version of Girl of Ipanema.
What makes Sinatra one of the greatest is his constant change. He loved music and singing and was always looking to new artists and influences and learning from them. Antonio Jobem was as hot as Sinatra and the Beatles in his home country of Brazil. When his Bossanova sound became popular worldwide he paired up with Sinatra for this classic. Sintra's velvet voice is tested for the slowed down pace and lower range than he's used to. Not one of my favorite Sintara albums, but it still gets a spin on occasion.
love me those crooners!
made me dance :)) liked it!
Exquisitely crafted music from some serious pros. Great to have on and tune into to a greater or lesser degree from time to time.
4/5
Love how he sounds like a normal everyday guy who just happens to sing well. Didn’t realize how these songs were probably largely popular thanks to this album. Pretty cool. And the ending—perfect.
I've been generally cynical so far in my reviews. Maybe I'm star-struck by the name "Sinatra", but I don't think so. This album is excellent. A majority of songs really land with me, taking me on a slow dance, emotion rising and falling, all the while comforted by Sinatra's sultry voice. Best album so far.
consistent album with a definite style, sadly dominated in a top-heavy way by the presence of Girl from Ipanema. However, Sinatra's silky vocals never fail to transport to somewhere far more classy.
Bossa nova: Sinatra style. Chill music :)
No like
Very relaxed and chilled album. The last track went on too long, although it was multiple takes of the same song live recorded.
Stærk start med Girl from Ipanema. Dejligt album. Perfekt til en stille weekend-morgen. Kommer lige op på 4 stjerner - på det rigtige tidspunkt.
Gives me all the romantic feels
super pleasant ah. brazilian singer fits right in, he participated in the songwriting for like half the songs too im too lazy to look up more though thats just whats on the spotify credits say. his singing alone is a nice addition. honestly i have to say its not my thing at all but i really liked it, sounds really nice and i can see myself coming back to it when in a particular mood lol maybe. only thing i don't like is the occasional ding ding ding sounds that someone's making??? is it antonio doing that orrr?? the two last tracks are interesting, normally i dont want to listen the same song twice in the same album but this is just short bits stitched together maybe i kind of lost track at some point but i was enjoying still, felt like little behind the scenes moments. but each day when she walks to the sea she looks straight ahead not at me the entirety of 'if you never come to me' and maybe 'how insensitive'
Sweet dulcet tones... Remember the 60/70s latin influence.
Repetitive but nice. First track really sets the tone mega bop. The samba(?) guitar throughout goes crazy
Smooth and silky, a true Sinatra Gem. This album has a touch of bossa nova mixed with his talented vocals.
Great easy listening, something I wouldn’t usually listen to but enjoyed.
Yeah, this smoooooooth. I like both Sinatra and Jobim, but I'm not a huge buff of either, and never heard their collaborative material before. It's bossa nova filtered through the big band tradition, as you might expect. Silky smooth and understated orchestra, with Jobim's gossamer guitar and Sinatra in his effortless lounge mood. The whole thing is chilled and quiet to the point of somnolent. But it's a thing of beauty. Ten tracks in under thirty mins too, which works perfectly for this style. One or two tracks aren't true perfection, so it's 4.5 from me. If you haven't heard this before you die, play it at your funeral.
Love all of his music
Didn’t listen but he’s a legend so
goede achtergrond muziek, lekkere vibe
.
Love of bit of Frankie. The man has such a smooth voice and such a massive hog of a cock. Yes, Frank son. Charming the ladies with your tone and then slamming them with your bone. What an icon.
A delightful blend of Sinatra’s dulcet tones and Jobim’s musicality gives a different flavour to these songs, a number of which I knew from Astrid Gilberto renditions. Very pleasant indeed
Always love a little Frank. This one was an album I had never heard. It was a nice alternative from his typical big band sound, and had a more stripped down “island” sound. My main issue was that a lot of the songs sound the same. Other than that, a fantastic album from the Chairman himself.
I enjoyed it a lot, very mellow and a little wistful overall. Will be returning to it.
I’ve said it before, but…FINALLY. Frank Sinatra was a huge figure for me growing up. He was the Christmas CD we listed to each year. His greatest hits album was something I have listened to falling asleep from back when I stayed in Plano with my grandparents to a few days ago. My grandpa loved Frank and I do too. I’d been waiting to get an album of his but didn’t expect it to be this one. Pretty wild to name the title of your album the full names of both the performers, it’s a mouthful. I do love the album cover of Frank puffing and recording...that 1967 haze. It was a different time. I honestly don’t know much about Frank as a person but I’ve heard some things so when I say I love him, I mean as a musician. Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars was my favorite from this album but this is a perfect evening listening to album or something when going to sleep or to calm down. I’m always happy to listen to my favorite crooner.
A true artisan, Frank serves up the goods as always
This is lovemaking music, pure and simple. Frank and Antonio go well together. I think I prefer Stan Getz and his version of The Girl From Ipanema a bit more. But this is still great.
Tres bon album. Frank sinatr 3st toujorus egal a lui meme mais j’aime beaucoup les arrangements de guitare dans celui-ci. 4
Perfect for a romantic dinner!
No notes needed
super smooth, and what a picture of its time. i don't love it, but it's a great view into what things must've been like for the squares in 1967.
I like it. Interesting that this was the start of bossa nova. Sometime we just kind of take for granted as existing music.
The vocals are so easy to listen to
sweet, easy, elegant, charming and the first track is all of that ^ x10 ❤️🔥
Such a new and exciting sound from Rio de Janeiro.
Dit is zo rustgevend. Puur genieten van de stem en de warme klanken. Frank is een legend
Frank Sinatra always nice to listen to.
I love Frank. I love Jobim. I love Bossa Nova. I love 60s orchestral arrangements. Have nostalgic attachment to this one.
One of my favourite Sinatra albums.
Just a good, consistent album. Sinatra’s voice never disappoints. 8.1/10
8,7
This was a very pleasant listen, but I don't have many more thoughts on it other than that. If there's one mark against this album, it's that I don't think Sinatra's stately crooning quite fits the light, airy bossa nova instrumentation. Other than that, it's a fairly easy listen: his voice still sounds good despite the slight incongruity and the band is proficient if repetitive. Jobim's songwriting is the best part of this, with him penning some excellent melodies and gentle, lovelorn lyrics. I wish we got more of his vocal contributions, but his few appearances were much appreciated. I don't see myself returning to this very often, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.
I'm horny and she's fit... but an album. Frank sinatra's voice as smooth as silk.
3.7
Pretty good but this era of music doesn’t really hook me.
Just ok background music.
Nice
I really enjoy the smoothness of this album. I‘m not very knowledgeable on Bossa Nova but i‘m sure there are albums that represent a „truer form“ of its roots, but i appreciate the emotional heaviness that Sinatra‘s vocals brings to the songs.
Reminds me of supper club or steak house music.
The vibes on this record are very laid back & lovely to listen to, almost as if it were tailor made for a luxury hotel lobby or waiting room. The vocal delivery and musicianship are brilliant as you come to expect with Sinatra, but the problem lies in the fact that the whole thing feels slightly limp. Very pleasant, very in offensive, but ultimately better for background listening.
Overall: 6/10 This was fine. I love Frank's voice so I'll always be glad to hear him, but some of the songs here have been featured on other albums with singers better suited for the music. The guitar playing is truly beautiful though and if you're a Sinatra stan then you'll get a lot out of this. Fav Song: Baubles, Bangles and Beads
The Girl From Ipanema is a great song but the rest doesn’t really do it for me. 50s crooning is not my favorite and it all kind of sounds the same
It was fine - just a little too old fashioned for my tastes though.
3/5. I had Getz/Gilberto less than a week ago on here so this is the second time in that span where I’ve had a record with “the Girl from Ipanema.” Not that I’m complaining as that is a very good song (though I do prefer the version found on Getz/Gilberto.) This album sees Sinatra link up with Brazilian jazz artist Antonio Carlos Jobin to do some Bossa Nova. The production on this album is fantastic, everything sounds very clear and pretty. Though I will say I don’t think Sinatra’s voice is the best suited for a more laid back genre like this. It works on some tracks like “How Insensitive” but less so on a song like “Meditation.”
This is fine, it's just sort of there. Music to be played in a restaurant thirty years ago that was already not as good as it once was. I don't think it would be better without Sinatra, it's orchestrated for him despite the bossa nova being more suited to Jobim. But the sun is shining and it's got a nice vibe.
Once I got used to the slow pace it grew on me a tiny bit (2 to just about 3 territory). Did like Quiet Night of Quiet Stars more than the others for some reason. Found the arrangements on a few tracks annoying e.g. I Concentrate On You. 2.7.
More than decent arrangements, although laid on a bit thick at times. Frank knows his way around a song although may not be completely suited to the Bossa genre.
What makes Getz/Gilberto so much better than this? Such a disappointment.
Its Frank
Smooth album! The words are kinda weird at times, but overall it’s a nice chill record. 3.5/5.0
Not bad but not for me
alright
It’s Frank, it’s great in the background. Girl From Ipanema is the coolest track.
Would give 3.5 if I could.
Not a fan. 3 stars for the other guy.
I wonder why, of all the Sinatra albums, this is the one here. Sunday like every other Sinatra album to me, and the guy has a lot of them.
The Girl from Ipanema 3.5 Dindi 2.7 Change Partners 3 Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado) 3.1 Meditation (Meditação) 2.8 If You Never Come to Me (Inútil Paisagem) 2.8 How Insensitive (Insensatez) 2.5 I Concentrate on You 3 Baubles, Bangles and Beads 2.7 Once I Loved (O Amor em Paz) 3 Score: 2.91
Bra, gillar det! Sjukt avslappnat och för att jag inte hittar ett bättre ord "smooth". Sinatras röst måste ju vara det mest lugnande som finns. Mysigt album att lyssna på. Lite mycket The Girl from Ipanema i olika versioner annars bra!
Genuinely expected more from Frank on this one. I guess that's going to be how most of your music sounds when you rely on the songwriting of others.
Frank Sinatra is Big Band Jazz! Not Bossa Nova! Also I didn't realize his name was Francis
It's ok. I mean, this is nice to listen to while working. However, it's not my style. So, 3 stars.
Frank's voice is obviously fantastic, and the orchestration good. But if you're at all familiar with actual Latin jazz, this album is pretty cheese.
My first real exposure to Frank Sinatra besides the few hits I'd heard. Had a good time; dude has a great voice.
Pretty good, and I like Sinatra's voice, but I'm not sure he actually adds a whole lot to these songs.
I read a few reviews before listening and apparently people here hate Frank Sinatra? Why? I am 100% positive he was an absolute asshole in real life but as an artist, there weren't many (if any) who did what he did better. I mean, come on, he's a legend for a good reason. This album is kind of a mixed bag though. Individually I love Sinatra and Jobim, together they don't quite mash up for me. Girl From Ipanema is great, though not as good as the Getz/Gilberto version which I feel is the definitive one. The rest of the album has its highs and lows, but mostly just kind of hovers there around the middle. Definitely not Frank's best but enjoyable nonetheless. 3.5/5 but rounding down because it's not good enough for a 4.
A solid collaboration between Sinatra and Jobim, buuuut I think I prefer my bossa nova sans Sinatra (see: Getz/Gilberto). Excellent drumming by Dom Um Romao, a pioneer in the bossa nova genre
Onhan tuo Sinatran ääni aika upea, mutta toistoksi menee.
Love Frank, but this one is only ok
A fancy uppity restaurant soundtrack
Frank Sinatran laulamana englanniksi käännettyjä bossa nova kappaleita ja muutama bossa novaksi käännetty jazz kappale. The Girl From Ipanema aina kova, muuten ihan perus chill hyvää eikä mitään mieltä räjäyttävää. Parhaat: The Girl From Ipanema, I Concentrate On You
Not Frank’s best
Typical Frank sings classics.
kerstmuziek? ik vond wel leuk ik viel wel weer in slaap toen k dit vanochtend luisterde
I had heard some of Sinatra and Jobim’s collaborations before and had not enjoyed them. They are both very good at what they do, but that doesn’t mean that when they mix those two things the result will be good. Einstein was very good at . . . relativity? What is e=MC squared? Relativity right? And David Copperfield was very good at making the Statue of Liberty disappear, but combining relativity and making the Statue of Liberty disappear . . . well that would probably be awesome. It is hard to think of something that wouldn’t be cool when you mix it with making the Statue of Liberty disappear just because making the Statue of Liberty disappear is so cool. Oh wait, now I’ve looked at David Copperfield’s Wikipedia page and apparently he is on the Epstein list. So that’s at least one thing that mixing with making the Statue of Liberty disappear isn’t cool. What were we talking about?
Frank Sinatra can be criticized for many things, but one thing he certainly did well was sense the industry's currents. It was the late 1960s, and in the US, blues, rock, and psychedelic music were taking popularity from jazz and swing, and then the "British Invasion" arrived. The artist knew he was at risk of being sidelined and decided it was time to look elsewhere — not to England, but to Brazil, the birthplace of bossa nova. The new album was bound to be a success: it featured a sound no less fashionable at the time, accompaniment by one of the genre's creators, Antônio Carlos Jobim, his songs translated into English, and several jazz standards. Everything was in keeping with Sinatra's style, although one senses that bossa nova is too calm for him: the artist sometimes has to rein in his voice. The perfect background for dinner, just like the last album I came across here by old Frank.
Sinatra with a flamenco flair
not my favourite Sinatra
way too long for a 28min record.
Lovely, calm album. Enjoyed Frank's buttery voice and the accompanying guitar pieces. 7/10
I'm conflicted. On one hand Sinatra has an undeniably great voice. On the other hand, he croons about the same thing for 10 straight tracks. This album was boring in all the right ways.
2,5
The Girl From Ipanema - yummy classic Change Partners - so good, "just try" yknow! B, B, & B - boing
It’s Sinatra, not much to say. Decent tunes, strong musicianship and all contributions by Jobim tend to be highlights.
Some old Sinatra standards here, what's not to like?
sin
Frank’s voice elevates this almost entirely one dimensional album. They seemed to really like their sound, and they performed well, but I think it could have been an A-B single instead of an album. Favorite songs: The Girl From Ipanema, Sinatra/Jobim Medley
I didn't think this was as good as the other Sinatra album we've already gotten in this set.
nicht schlecht. ich fands aber auch nicht so krass
Frank Sinatra isn't always my jam, but I like bossa nova and I enjoyed how that genre and his vocal style melded in this album.
Frank Sinatra - Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim - 3/5 It’s amazing how Sinatra had such a great voice in spite of chain smoking and drinking like a fish. I drank bourbon daily for the better part of a year and it did nothing to help my singing voice. Oh well. Other than that the album is pretty dated. Nothing really stuck out other than “The Girl From Ipanema”
Kinda listened in the background while I edited, and didn’t even realize it had ended, but idk I’m not mad at it
totally nice and chill... sorta random lol but ya ok!
This is a beautiful record, that I'd enjoy tremendously if only any of the following songs could reach the heights of the first track. The Girl From Ipanema just has so much character. The rest, meanwhile, is more of that nice, chill, undemanding dinner music that I tend to appreciate right up until I nod off in the middle of it.
mid
takie o dupie maryny te piosenki, jakies romantyczne i smetne, maly problem nie rozumiem Antoniego
I listened to this on the way back from a night out so it’s good chill out music but maybe because it’s the same thing over and over again so it sends you to sleep
Super duper pleasant, barely any range at all. It's a blending of two genres I'm not particularly a fan of, and I think I'd prefer Sinatra on his own or bossa nova on its own instead of this mash-up.
Frank Sinatra: a serial cheater and divorced his wife cause he didn't want his wife to work (he wanted her to quit her lead role in a film, and she didn't want to). Gotta separate the art from artist here
Did the album need that much Girl from Ipanema on it? It's fine overall but nothing spectacular here.
In 1967, two giants in their respective fields clashed together to create a project of its' time that is still seen as remarkable to this very day for blending two styles together that many didn't think would work so well in such a mainstream setting. Those two giants were Frank Sinatra and Antônio Carlos Jobim and those respective genres were Vocal Jazz and Bossa Nova. The instrumentation makes Frank pop so much more than I would have ever expected and really brings a very refreshing take on the classic Vocal Jazz artist I didn't think would win me over so much. I wasn't particularly impressed by the songwriting on display here, but honestly I think the instrumentation won me over enough that I can very much look past it. I also love that Frank gave Antônio some room to shine on this album even if it was with small ad-libs scattered across the album. Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim's collaborative self titled project is one for the books and definitely a really cool look in the international sounds of two great artists clashing in a beautiful way.
This is #day597 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… even though I prefer my Sinatra leaning more toward jazz, this one is still a smooth listen I don't quite mind on a late Saturday morning. That said, it's rather unlikely I'd ever choose to put this particular record on myself. Let it be a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day598.
Unfortunately worse than the sum of its parts. I prefer Sinatra in his own work, and I prefer the bossa nova without him.
lekker getoeter, sinatra komt niet helemaal tot z'n recht EN zit in de weg van het portugese drama. lesser than the sum of its parts helaas
Alright, final Sinatra album of the list. I've been lucky enough to get pretty substantial breaks in between each of the albums from Ol' Blue Eyes, so I haven't really gotten tired of his stuff. However, I will say that this probably my least favorite of the three that he has on the list. It's still good, obviously, but there's one thing that holds this album back a bit in comparison to something like In The Wee Small Hours or Songs For Swingin' Lovers. I feel like, even more so than on those other albums, these songs don't really feel like Sinatra's songs. All of the songs on the other albums were written by other people, but Frank Sinatra made them feel like his songs, especially on the better songs from those albums. I don't really think this album has that though. This is a collab album of sorts between Sinatra and the Brazilian bossa nova artist Antônio Carlos Jobim. I mean, the album name is literally just both of their names. It's not exactly a secret. As such, this is pretty firmly a bossa nova album. One might even call it Sinatra's take on bossa nova as a genre. I do think that Frank Sinatra's voice works well for the music. I'd be surprised if it didn't. But there is a bit of a disconnect from Sinatra's personality and the bossa nova stylings that makes the album experience a bit less cohesive. Like, I enjoy hearing Sinatra sing "The Girl From Ipanema," but I just can't think of this as his song, you know? Of course, the music backing the voice is quite enjoyable. Jobim is quite a talent. The album is definitely on the more repetitive side though, which is something that I've seen chocked up to both Sinatra's style and bossa nova at large. Ultimately, Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim is a nice album for sure, but it doesn't have quite as much substance as I'd like it to. It's inoffensive, but it didn't rock my socks off. High 3/5.
7/10
I enjoy the bossa nova vibe but Frankie does his best to ruin everything. I could still imagine putting this on on a lazy Sunday morning.
Sinatra, and generally crooners, are really emblematic to me of a completely "just fine" genre of music. It doesn't amaze me, but it doesn't offend me either. I wouldn't put it on of my own volition, but I would have no issue if someone else put it on. In others words, it's alright!
Another nice album, nothing amazing though. It was even starting to get a bit dull towards the end.
this was fire
A weird mix. Like Sinatra mostly from listening to my father's records. This experiment sort of works. But Frank was probably a real jerk.
I love Frank Sinatra, I love Jobim, I love Bossa Nova, so why don't I love this album? I think Frank falls a little flat. I think this genre is out of his element a bit, and it shows. If this album is an introduction to some truly great Bossa Nova classics, then it's worth it.
I love Sinatra, but this wasn't among my favorite.
I'm not totally convinced that bossa nova was Sinatra's genre, but fair play to him for trying something different.
I don't like Sinatra. He sounds like he doesn't really care. Like if he has other fucks to give. Not the feeling I personally want from a performer. It doesn't help that Bossa Nova clearly isn't his genre. Jobim is a gift to music. I prefer the original Bossa Nova by a mile, but it's still a pleasant listen.
I wish this were just an Antonio Carlos Jobim album. Frank makes this album worse, frankly.
Actually the Complete Reprise compilation
A good bossa album with a few standards.
Frankie is as smooth as butter, but butter doesn’t go on everything.
Some good Sunday morning stuff here
Listened while installing window blinds. Girl From Epanema again. Stan Getz is better.
The star of this was really Antonio Carlos Jobim.
- Sinatra obviously has a smooth, rich tone to his voice. - That said, I didn't think that it fit the instrumentation all of the time - it felt a bit too languid. - The instrumentation was soft and pleasant, with some nicely arranged orchestration. - Everything about this album feels like background music -- nothing really stands out. - Lyrics are pretty boring - another album all about love without a whole lot of depth. - I listened to the Sinatra/Jobim: The Complete Reprise Recordings version and enjoyed the extra songs (which had more Brazilian influence, I think) more, which bumped this album up to a 3, which I guess isn't fair since that isn't exactly the album listed above, but it is what it is.
Frank's classic voice combined with the heart-warming sounds of bosa nova; Interesting idea that doesn't quite land.
smooth.
Not among Sinatra's best but still good stuff. I really like the Girl from Ipanema cover here
Nice background music, great voice. Nothing too exciting
5/10
Cool listen if you are in the proper mood
Fun to walk around the city in. But meh.
He smooth he’s singing! Baa ba boo ba ha ba boo boo! You know the vibe
Only listened to a few songs but I get the gist, he loves to croon and he loves the ladies. Personally I am a connoisseur of depressed Sinatra but horny Sinatra I can take or leave
The album was cool. I feel like all the songs had the same classic Frank Sinatra sound. Either way it's an album you can play in the background and chill.
Perfectly pleasant, just not sure what the combination of Frank and Antonio is so special to be included here
While I'm relieved this the final Sinatra album included in this project, I was much less hostile to it than the others. Antonio Carlos Jobim is the key difference (and a lighter touch with the strings). I'm not especially interested in revisiting this, but if one of these songs popped up while I was at a restaurant, I wouldn't be annoyed. HIGH PRAISE INDEED.
Good background dinner party music.
Pleasant, girl from Ipanema is a classic, wish there was more Jobim. Gets a little samey. Great background music (not in a bad way)
Vibe
So, this album is definitely way different than any of the others I've had so far. And it's a big difference from the albums I've had the last couple of days (Jane's Addiction, NIN, New Order, etc.). I knew "The Girl From Ipanema" and a couple of the other standards that they included on the album sounded familiar to me. Otherwise, if I've heard any of these songs before, I had long forgotten them. I remember my grandparents have one of those old-fashioned huge hi-fi units that was like a piece of furniture, and I remember them playing music by a lot of the old greats like Sinatra, so it's possible I've heard this album before, but was too young to realize it. Definitely not my normal thing (my Spotify algorithms are probably so confused now), but no one can argue with Sinatra's voice and the smoothness he brought to every song he touched.
I thought this would be better. It’s okay, it’s Sinatra. But nothing really grabbed me.
If "uninspired" was an album.
Sedate Sinatra is not my favourite Sinatra. I much prefer him when he's sexually-aggressively reprimanding a dame for "blowing on another man's dice" through the medium of song. This was okay, melodic, if a little dull at times.
It’s like the ankikiwawaka song and it’s good classic happy to know where it comes from but meh
It's ok. Franks a decent signer and jobins bossa nova is nice. Good background music, but not exactly memorable, for me at least.not sure I'll ever listen to it again.
Deze is wat herkenbaarder! Smooth jazz met lekkere gitaartunes en iconische Sinatra vocals. Af en toe Portugees geeft het album net wat meer spice. Luistert lekker weg
Nice music to work to.
s'okay I guess
Girl from Ipanema returns! Nice easy listening
pleasant bossa nova vibes. led to Getz/Gilberto that i liked
I like Sinatra. I like Bosa Nova. I like this less than the sum of its parts.
version with getz is better
Brazil and Sinatra is an interesting combo, but not sure if they blend together.
With a mix of crooning and calming bossa nova, this is basically weapons-grade inoffensive - its nice enough for background, but doesnt even try to leave a mark...
Sinatra one of tue best yo ever do it
The only song I knew going in was Girl from Ipanema & I think I enjoy the other version better. This album is fine. Frank's singing is spectacular as ever. It's just not my cup of tea. I think most of the intros sound about the same. It's fine. I seem to be indifferent to Frank. 3
Hopefully I can remember this to revisit if I want to recapture the vibe. I like this one a lot 3
Musically good. Just not my jam.
Not too big on Sinatra, but this was nice.
I mean it’s frank sinatra. So smooth 3.5/5
Not a big Sinatra guy, but I really dig Bossa Nova. This collaboration with Antônio Carlos Jobim is great, and instantly my favorite Sinatra album.
I don't think this gets where it needs to go.
Less crooning then I was expecting but still decent enough. 6/10
I could wonder about Mr. Sinatra's intentions recording with Jobim... (Was it a genuine love for the Bossa Nova stylings of the gifted songwriter or was the emerging Brazilian sound a gravy train the aging star could hitch his wagon to?) I will assume the least cynical path, as Sinatra biographers have described him immersing himself in the music. I would say his efforts only go so far compared to the primary sources. Huge Frank fans will delight in this, but myself, a huge Bossa Nova enjoyer, find this album falling short of the Getz collaborations of Gilberto, for instance. All that said, its still really nice to listen to and the orchestral arrangements are great.
Pleasant and Nice.
Unbelievable album with the voices of Frank and Johim, is a bossa nova version of Sinatra which makes it interesting and a great short listen. but after a couple of songs they all feel kind of the same and it feels more like a cover band. Although that might be the intent, it still think is a good album but it could have been even better with more classics.
Honestly, better than I expected!
Not the best Sinatra. Not the best Jobim. Not awful, not brilliant
While there's some great songs on this, it feels like there's something missing
Previously rated: #568 - Songs For Swingin' Lovers! (4/5) ****************************************** Album #1,003 Is there a rule that every Bossa Nova album must have The Girl From Ipanema on it? This is the third one on the list so far. Smooth and easy to listen to Bossa Nova crooning, but I prefer his more upbeat "swingin'" stuff.
Eh it’s alright but just a worse cover of someone else’s stood
Obviously talented musicians, but pretty far from anything I would seek out. I’m going to go with 3 stars, but it’s not something that I would likely go looking for again.
Going to give it 3 just for the combination of Franks voice and Jobim for the boss’s nova sound. Overall, I’m not a huge fan, jazz singers really don’t excite me.
The could have used the same rhythm track on every song. Mayby the did... But nice slow music, with good recorded sound.
Ну типа то, чего ожидаешь. Лучшая песня - Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars.
Not my favorite Frank Sinatra album, but it is a pretty chill and low-key listen. Would be a nice late evening album.
A Perfect Saturday morning with coffee and the news album
*1967. *Starts out with Girl from Ipanema, so you really can't beat that. *Sinatra's voice is obviously the star of the album, as usual. *Jobim is a nice addition - he adds a little spice to an otherwise very white, vanilla album. *Pleasant, but not very exciting or memorable. RATING - 7/10
Not classic Sinatra by any stretch, but it has got enough to hold the interest. Turned out to be perfect on a Boxing Day walk in 2025
Not for me. Can understand why some people like it.
Effortlessly smooth anyone that can make the girl from ipanema interesting must be good. Not sure Frank needs a full Bossa Nova album , let alone me Nice distraction but I’d rather listen to another of his albums.
The only song I really enjoyed on here was the first. I liked the instrumentation overall and Sinatra’s voice is great, but the songs throughout were just alright. Nothing very special here.
I haven't really heard Franky's music in extended sessions like this, but this was pretty pleasant - about as pleasant as I was expecting. Gorgeous sweeping string sections over breathy drumming and Frank's iconic vocal crooning...what's not to love. A lot more bossa nova than I was expecting, but I assume that was the intentional direction of this one particular album. It suits Franky's voice, so not much in terms of complaints there. Sounded about as good as I'd hoped, and it's the perfect kind of background and mood music. Really takes you to a place in time, I'd say. My favorite song was the very light and delicate 'Once I Loved'
I know I've had to have heard a Frank Sinatra song before, but I could not list one off the top of my head. I know what his voice sounds like tho. First Listen Notes: 1. "The Girl from Ipanema" - wait, wtf. I know this melody, SZA must've interpolated it for "BMF". This is so strange to hear lol. It's actually throwing me so off hearing it like this. Cute song tho. 4. "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" - This one is cute, I like the imagery The instrumentation is nice overall. I can imagine times when this could be the vibe i'm looking for, but it's 100% not something I'm gonna come back to often. The honest rating is 2.5/5
Classic background music
Frank Sinatra’s voice is so smooth, it’s great to hear. But this is just coffee shop music.
This album was nominated for album of the year... following 2 years of Frank Sinatra winning album of the year and Jobim winning the year before that. Was there nothing better going on that they kept nominating the same people every year? Barbra Streisand was nominated every year also after winning before Jobim. This is a nice album to listen to and is very calming. I did enjoy it but other than the combining of artists why is this considered so amazing? If the Beatles did Abbey Road and then released the same album 2 years later with someone else singing would that be remarkable?
Godsamme, The Girl from Ipanema, dat nummer blijft me maar achtervolgen joh. FAVO: The girl from Ipanema, Quiet Nights, Bubbles, Bangles and Beads
Correcto
Pretty, but kinda boring. The song about baubles was catchy.
Too mellow and too repetitive to be a truly outstanding album. "Girl from Ipanema" is better done on the Getz/Gilberto album. Nonetheless, this album is good for lovemaking, aka fucking, or also just delving into 'Mad Men' cosplays. Top tracks: "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado)," "I Concentrate on You," "Girl from Ipanema"
Look, it's Sinatra and Jobim doing bossa nova. Masters of their craft. But overall kinda boring overall. I felt like Getz/Gilberto was better, if a little peppier, even for the style. Not my shit, but respect the game.
Great classic album that reminds me I don't listen to Frank enough.
Probably a good call to just go by Frank.
Enjoyable and relaxing
Listen, I know some of these albums are going to be dated and are very much products of their time. I get it, times were different, it was a different world and all that nonsense. That being said, man, this entire album just feels kinda… well, overtly rapey. Makes it kind of hard to enjoy. Not to mention it’s just not really my thing in general, so that’s a double whammy. I have no idea how Frank Sinatra was as a person, but it’s not relevant to the album. I kind of got the impression that he was one of the most well respected artists in general, but man is he getting absolutely RAILED in these reviews. There aren’t many, but there are enough albums on the website that reading the reviews for are a substantially more fun time than listening to the actual album they’re reviewing. This is one of those times. I expected to like this album a lot more than I actually did. I mean, it’s Frank Sinatra. From what I had initially understood, he’s some kind of music royalty. And yes, again, dated, product of its time, etc etc. I’m sure this was probably absolutely groundbreaking at the time. But now, all I hear is “Please cheat on your husband” or “I’m stalking this unsuspecting woman”, or “I’m going to buy the old washing machine some jewelry. Broads love shiny things.” I don’t know. It’s pretty boring, and I didn’t manage to get through the day just listening to it. This is also not my favorite rendition of “The Girl From Ipanema”. But, a positive note, he’s got a hell of a good voice. Conflicted, if this one’s not a 3.0, it’s a 2.9. The least rapey song I enjoyed the most was probably “Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars (Corcovado)”. In case you couldn’t tell, I wasn’t really all that much of a fan of this one. A pretty rough outing by one Frank Sinatra. That’s all folks.
I feel like this album just started, and then it ended. What a strange feeling to start to vibe and then have it cut off.
Great background music, wasn’t too exciting. Didn’t really grab my attention much.
The Brazilian Rhythm needs a different voice.
Great voice, the smooth Bossa Nova vibe is very relaxing. But I wouldn't choose to listen to this kind of music of my own volition under most circumstances. It's very chill, but a little boring
It was pretty enjoyable :) Not sure if I want to listen to it again though. 3.5
All his stuff sounds the same to me
How did Frank Sinatra ever maintain a hard” persona after releasing any of his music? This was chill and I couldn’t moving my hips.
I didn’t love this as much as I wanted to. I think I just don’t love Sinatra completely Jobim > Sinatra
very nice and relaxing but I like vince garauldi’s latin album much betta
Great background music.
Nice to have on in background while working.
Short and sweet. Franks singing is slower and more subdued on this one. Very relaxing album
I would have probably been obsessed with this 20 years ago. Really nice.
Wasn't aware of this collaboration but even more surprised by the revelation that this Jobim fella should have been named along with Stan Getz and João Gilberto for their popular collaboration 3 years prior. Nothing really standouts but I wouldn't mind giving this album some more time.
3 out of 5. I liked the combination of Sinatra's voice and the soft bossa nova backing him.
Very pleasant old-timey jazz arrangements that show off his gorgeous voice. Feels like being in a NY lounge and slowly getting drunker and more melancholic on cocktails while watching other people dancing
A cool album but not my stuff!
Chill with a drink on a boat under the stars vibe
Not questioning why I got two Frank Sinatra albums in a row.
