Reviews (page 6 of 8)

Standard Sinatra, always a good toe tapper.

Bossa nova is a tough genre. It's pleasant and relaxing, but never commands a ton of attention. Sinatra over bossa nova is a natural fit, just like orchestral or big band, and his trade offs with Antonio Jobim are nice, but it kind of floats in and floats out. Favorite tracks: "Meditation"

This is a really good album if you like Sinatra, just not really my jam.

Catchy tunes from a couple of pros

I was surprised to see a later-career Frank Sinatra album on this list. He apparently changed his sound a bit for this one, opting for a bossa nova influenced sound in collaboration with Antonio Jobim. I will say, Antonio's contributions to the album are fantastic. I just feel like Sinatra doesn't fit the genre too well. He still does maintain that classy swagger of his though. I also really love the pic they used for the album cover, very fitting.

Felt like i was in a Cruise ship elevator.

Not classic frank. But still a noteworthy entry.

First track carries this album. Not too familiar with Sinatras work except his really big hits but this was a interesting listen. I probably will not return to this album but it was good

3 A little bit different, but a nice change of pace from Frank Sinatra’s typical orchestral stuff. Antonio’s bossa nova sound pairs well with Sinatra’s voice, but ultimately, I don’t think it results in the most remarkable work of either’s career. It’s a cool crossover for sure, but at times I can’t help but feel like they’re weighing each other down more than they are lifting each other up, and as a result, a good chunk of this album was just kind of “meh” to me. I did really enjoy the opening track The Girl From Ipanema (a song I’m certain I’ve heard variations of before), especially considering that it’s like the only song that features an actual vocal duet from the two, but there wasn’t really anything else I felt that strongly about. The only other song that really stood out to me was Changing Partners, which I suppose was enjoyable enough by its own merits, but mostly just because it made me think that maybe Sinatra was getting after something else after all with an album titled “Songs for Swingin’ Lovers”. Definitely not bad. I would say I genuinely appreciate this album as a spin on the typical Sinatra formula, but I just don’t see myself reaching for this one over many of his others. If I were to revisit, I would likely just give the Sinatra/Jobim Melody a listen, a song featured as a bonus track on Spotify - it incorporates most of the songs on the album in one six-and-a-half minute number, and in my opinion, gets you everything you really need out of the album.

I was raised in a household where Sinatra was king (until the old man started to lose it & proclaimed late in life that actually a different Italian, Jerry Vale, was the superior vocalist). When I was ten years old, the second album I ever bought was Sinatra’s Come Dance With Me, one of his last for Capitol. By 1961 he had formed his own label, Reprise (can you believe that this was the label that in 1967 released the first Jimi Hendrix album in the U.S.?). Jobim’s fame in the west peaked with the success of The Girl From Ipanema. The version by Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto (featuring vocals by Astrud Gilberto) won the 1965 Grammy for Record of the Year. According to wiki, “ It is believed to be the second-most recorded pop song in history, after "Yesterday" by The Beatles.” Indeed, before it was the opening track on this 1967 release by Sinatra, the song had been recorded by Peggy Lee, Ella, Nat King Cole, Julie London, Sarah Vaughan, Mancini, Chris Montez, Cliff Richard, Connie Francis, Pet Clark, Sammy Davis & Count Basie, The Supremes, Esther Phillips, King Curtis & ( god bless her) Mrs Miller. Seven of the ten tracks are Jobim compositions. The other three are Change Partners (written by Irving Berlin for Fred Astaire to sing in the 1938 film Carefree), I Concentrate On You ( classic Cole Porter lyric written for the film Broadway Melody Of 1940) & Baubles, Bangles & Beads (credited to Robert Wright & George Forrest, from the 1953 Broadway musical, Kismet - the melody, like almost all the music in the show was based on the works of Alexander Borodin). And all three versions by Frank are terrific. Are any of the versions of Jobim’s songs the best you’re likely to hear? Probably not. Two things make the album memorable for me - first the vulnerability in Sinatra’s voice (he was in his early 50’s by this time). Remember, Sinatra topped the charts the year before this with Strangers In The Night, and a fortnight before this album was released Nancy & Frank released Something Stupid, which also topped the charts. The following year, My Way was a big hit & became his signature song. But in 1971 he retired. His voice was starting to wear & he knew it ( although he only stayed retired for 2 years - the lure of the lire, I imagine). The second thing is Jobim’s guitar. How often did we ever get to hear Sinatra with a guitar featured behind him? This isn’t a Sinatra album I play a lot, but I’ve given it a hiding in the past few days. Loved it.

Lush, smooth, sophisticated, wallpaper.

I can't quite conceptualize the distance that would have been felt between Rio and Hoboken in 1967. Viewed as a Sinatra album, he applied his crystal clear voice to the bossa nova style. The results are nice but less interesting than the same material from Brazilian singers. Viewed as a Jobim album, he is an ambassador for Brazilian music into the US, teaming up with one of the heavyweight crooners to bring his sound in. It's a good and maybe unexpected collaboration but overall, Sinatra is kind of watering down Jobim here in my opinion.

Some nice music in there. Also it can be quite a snooze fest. Frankie does have a really smooth voice, but I can only listen for so long.

This album was decent. Sinatra's voice was fantastic as always and it suited the bossa nova well. However, this album feels extraneous especially when there are much better bossa nova and Frank Sinatra albums on this list.

Like a teaser trailer for Getz/Gilberto

Liked a couple

kinda fun, jazzy, latin take on the normal crooner stuff. Not my favorite music but not bad

This sounds like a 3-martini lunch on a Friday.

It's a lovely album, but I would never put it on of my own volition, except for maybe background music on Christmas day

First time really listening to Sinatra. Dude is smooth but what I found surprisingly engaging was the music/arrangements on this album. His voice though soothing got a bit boring at times but the music was always light, tender and engaging.

#1, #4, #7 Ngl all the songs sounded the same

I love Frank, I grew up with him. You're never gonna find a smoother love song voice. I'm biased but I'm not reflecting that in my rating as this isn't really the album I would have picked for this list. He has much better tunes than this.

Cheese sandwich

Now I have the perfect album on standby if I ever want to bang a GILF.

Frank does bossa nova. It's alright, might have to listen to it a few more times. A very subtle album. Good stuff. 3 / 5 stars.

Half-assed love songs carried by a generational voice.

I am unsure of my thoughts on the bossa nova genre. I really want to like it but I often find it boring. I like hearing some of the top bossa nova songs in english, even though some of the lines feel like they had to cram a bunch of extra words in there. All in all it doesn't have any of the big band sound that I associate with Frank Sinatra and other singers of that era. I enjoyed listening to it but I don't think its for me. 3 stars

Frank is very much hit or miss for me but this was not bad. I do like the song Girl From Ipanema but three versions of the same song seems a little overkill.

It's the easiest of easy listening. But songs like change partners do feel a bit creepy

Yeah this is easy to listen to

I think Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos John suffers from a very similar problem green onions does, the songs sound too similar to each other. But i think that it does sound better and it does not get nearly as tiring to listen to as green onions did. I would have given this album a 2.5 but its getting a 3 due to the fact that i need to round up. Best Song: Sinatra/Jobim Medley Worst Song: I Concentrate On You

3/5. The latin-flavored Sinatra sound is a unique choice and there are some nice and sweet instrumentals and passages but they can sometimes counteract each other. Kind of like they added the orchestra as an after thought because the guitar was not providing enough background, and now it sounds like two backing tracks working against each other. Sometimes it works, but mainly because Sinatra's voice is present enough to ignore the other stuff. It's a nice collection of slow dance songs but it has its flaws.

Sinatra's voice is obviously great throughout, and the music has a cool vibe to it...however, I probably won't go back to this album. This does not include any of Sinatra's big classic songs, and outside of The Girl From Ipanema, nothing here is really grabbing my attention. All very pleasant well performed songs, but feels like background music more than anything else.

very chillllll

Nice southern swing to Sinatra

I listened to this on my day off, morning time, cleaning the kitchen and feeding/hanging out with my 18mo old. That kinda vibe.

Christmas? Maybe. Smooth? Definitely. Fave tracks: I Concentrate On You, and Baubles, Bangles And Beads, for the little doop de doos in the background.

good i guess. 6/10

Smoooooth

An album for a sun-soaked holiday. Tracks like 'The Girl from Ipanema' and 'Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars' are gems.

Nice. Not my favorite.

Classic frank sinatra. I've heard ipanema elsewhere. was a good listen, but im not the biggest fan.

Sinatra has such a classic voice. It makes me feel nostalgic for a time that I wasn’t even born during. I’m sure this isn’t his best album but I do love the collab with Jobim. I just wish there was a bit more dueting between the two.

Didn't know this album had anything to do with bossa nova, which could mean I didn't fail in imitating it. But it also means it didn't succeed, either.

Very gentle, well sung. Quiet and pretty bossa nova. Sweet for a relaxing sunny day.

3/10, 30%

Meh He can really sing - obviously, but it all feels a little polished and stilted for me. Decent background music though, and reminds me of my grandad, so that's nice. 3 ⭐

Much better than the last Frank offering.

It's good, but not a lot of variety to the tracks

Too much Sinatra and not enough Jobim. But it had great moments!

I like Frank, but only in small doses. This album is a small dose and with some bosanova beats plus nice guitar.

I have a few Latin lounge albums with a similar vein (Astrud Gilberto, João Gilberto and Wanda Da Sah) but they are all miles better than this. The reason: the vocals on all the above are so much sweeter and match the cool breezy candle lit summer evening vibe so much more than Sinatra, who sounds a little forced. The music by Jobim is swell.

Frank Sinatra does bossa nova. It's exactly what it says on the bottle. Enjoyable, and there's a couple of tracks I need to add to my wedding music playlist, but its not setting my world on fire.

Where is that girl from again?

The only song that stands out is The Girl From Ipanema.

big croooooons

2.8 cute fine bit samey faves: girl from ipanema

Accessible, easy listening but nothing to excite here.

I love Frank Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim but I don't think this album suited either one of them :-(

It had a good artistic quality to it but not something I would return for. He is a talented artist and vocalist. 3 stars as it was easy to listen to and was not an ear piecing sound.

makes me sleepy 3

Nice old school Sinatra album. Beautiful singing.

Very different to what I normally listen to, a master at the peak of his game! Very relaxing!

Things I needed today: this album, a double dosage of Adderall, and Zoloft. (Spoilers: I did not get 2/3 of those things.)

Didn’t know Frank Sinatra could do bossa nova so well

Tis a mood album, a winter mood album. It is not winter.

“Consistent” is the word. Frank Sinatra is excellent at what he does and it pairs well with bassa nova. I can listen to it for hours; it naturally fades into the background. The consistency is impressive and also maybe hurts the rating. The songs are good but few really standout. And Sinatra’s prolific catalogue of work makes his masterful baritone sounds… somewhat common. This is a solid 3.5. I’d give it 4 for it’s staying power but it loses some for the lack of strong singles. 4’s will become overused, so => 3. It’s about to opposite of Rio, which I generally did not enjoy but had some great performances and a couple strong singles.

I feel like this is background music. Not unpleasant, but not something that grabs my attention. My grandfather listened to this sort of stuff

Quite smooth but in some parts Sinatra’s lounge croony voice doesn’t really suit the bossa nova style.

Antonio deserves better

I struggled not to give this a 2 just because it's so fucking sappy but it's not *bad* I just hate it

It's Sinatra, so it's obviously good. I did find myself wishing that Jobim would have a bigger singing role than he did though--more of the play between English and Spanish vocals would have been interesting. But, I didn't find a lot of variety between the tracks. The performances were beautiful, but this is the weakest of the Sinatra albums I've had so far in this exercise. Favorite track: Meditation

5 stars for Jobim, 1 for Frank.

pretty sweet arrangements but not an improvement over jobim on his own

Nice, also liked that it was short.

Can never go wrong with old boy Frank, such a great mix. Lovely opening song. Has such a soothing voice for any sort of situation

niiiiiceeeeeeee

It’s 11PM, it’s been raining all day, and I’m snuggled up with a cat, blanket, and crossword. This hit with a really nice cozy vibe, and I think it helped me enjoy it more than I normally would. 3.5/5

I like Frank Sinatra but have listened to too much of his music to in my life to be really stoked on it now 3.5/5

I really like classic Bossa Nova, but Sinatra's overly slick voice isn't doing it any favors here. It might make sense on paper, but there is some disconnect between the vocals and instrumentation that really throws the vibe off for me.

3/5 I Slightly enjoyed this album I'm embarrassed to say. Maybe it's because it was something completely different than usual. Maybe. But more than anything else I think I enjoyed the Portuguese influence, the songs that came on after the album, and how short it was.

Sadly in this thing brevity is always appreciated and yes, this was brief. Not too bad, quite romantic and enjoyable but not a place I'd rush back to.

Appealing but not particularly memorable to me.

Not obsessed with this but it’s good

I’m a canny massive Sinatra fan. My 4th most listened to artist since joining Spotify in 2009. Apparently. But wasnt massively bothered about this. Sounds daft, but for me Sinatra is an Autumn/Winter listen, and this was a bit too summery. More browning leaves and less balmy nights please

Perfect dinner party music, went by quickly and smoothly. Not sure id listen again of my own accord but would enjoy it if it happened to come on.

Not my favourite, a lot of the songs are forgettable and meander. It also sounds like Frank isn't really putting in a lot of effort.

Its quite nice background music but nothing stood out to me. The whole album just kind of passed over me and I felt whelmed.

Is it cultural appropriation if the guy who invented the style is singing with the white man who's just visiting? Either way, this album slides down as smooth as silk. Never been to Brazil but this feels like an all-inclusive resort - a tourist's version of what Brazilian bossa nova is like.

Slow but good

Bangerrr

Not the Chairman's best work, but it is an enjoyable album.

Great orchestration, the whole album has a strong bossa nova feel. The girl from Ipanema has been covered by countless artists, Sinatra does a great job on this one. Overall very lounge singer, a bit slow. I enjoyed the Latin flavor though

21st February 2023 Listened while working from home. Slow Monday, worked on the front room with dad, last of us in the evening. Sounded like a stroll through a warm jungle. Smooth and sultry.

Very pleasant, but that's about it

Wow! (The girl from Ipanema) Era partito meglio del previsto.

Sinatra is a blessing. Angel’s voice. But except for “Girl From Ipanema” the other songs’ lyrics are meh and dated. Not classic.

Not bad, like the later stuff better.

Not a vital Sinatra Album

A couple decent songs, but overall I'm at a stage in my life where this doesn't do it for me.

Good voice, probably a shit person. Outside of this list, I only ever listen to Frank when I’m eating at weddings - and that’s not by choice.

This album is a good register of an excellent music style, Bossa Nova. The album itself is not so good, but it's important for being part of the world's spread of this style, so it deserves its place on this list. Listening to it in a single session could be annoying, but it's not so hard to finish.

Didn't mind it. Don't normally like croon-y stuff but quite enjoyable, maybe because i was drinking a tasty cup of tea

Frank's quite the crooner. I can imagine folks putting this record on when company is around.

You know what you get with Frank Sinatra. It's entirely fine.

Pleasant

Never listened to a whole Sinatra album before so I’m glad I did one now. Just easy listening stuff. Not bad but not amazing for me.

Generally, I'm not a big Frank Sinatra fan, but i was curious to hear his collaboration with Jobim. I enjoyed the bossa nova styling and the record gets off to a promising start with the classic, Girl From Ipanema, though I still prefer the Getz/Gilberto version. I thought the album lost some of it's charm towards the end, but overall Sinatra does a valiant effort with the material.

Not a huge Sinatra fan but I find Jobim's music irresistible, so it ends up being a wash.

Quick nice Frank Sinatra album Fave tracks: The girl from ipanema, change partners, quiet nights of quiet stars 3/5

Not bad. But nothing really stood out.

As is common with Sinatra, a taste of the unfinished suggests an invitation back. And again, I'm not particularly inspired: Jobim is too background, with contributions appreciated. However, there are no sharp edges to turn one away. The styles do indeed blend, to what loss I'm not sure.

Obviously a great duo but man this music is so easy listening that I can't really say it's a standout or anything. It's there and it's kinda good, now where's my cigar?

Love the old crooner vibe. Nice background mucics

A nice cool and smooth album. Nothing really stands out, but nothing is bad either.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yes, for a jazz/old time record I found it charming. Nice feel to it and the length of the record is perfect for someone not that big into the genre. Favourite song: Track 1 - The Girl From Ipanema

inoffensive

Croony-Bossa-Nova-ba-va-va-ba-baaaaa

Agora Insensatez. Que felicidade ouvir Tom! Veio me alegrar quase no fim da música. O álbum estava começando a contrariar meu ufanismo. Suuaaaavee. Tom amassando no inglês!

It's less Sinatra with a Brazilian flavor and more Brazilian music with all traces of its Brazilness removed and replaced with Sinatra. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing since Sinatra puts some nice soundscapes together.

cool as can be, even if not my everyday cup of tea

Chill, relaxing, a little repetitive, but Sinatra's fantastic voice makes up for it.

overall impressions, nice easy listening, i found it soothing, frank sinatra has a great voice. don't really have any deeper thoughts.

"Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim" is an album by American singer Frank Sinatra and Brazilian composer, pianist, songwriter, arranger and singer Antônio Carlos Jobim" also known as the father of bossa nova. The album consists of seven original Jobim compositions and three standards from the Great Ameirican Songbook, sung, of course, by Sinatra and arranged in the bossa nova style. And, the arrangement and conducting was done by Claus Ogerman which also included an orchestra. This was a pretty subtle and subdued performance by Sinatra. The music and arrangement was very good and is the strength of this album. Jobim's guitar begins the famous "The Girl from "Ipanema." Sinatra sings in English, more subdued; Jobim comes in, vocally in Portuguese, and trades off with Sinatra. Great arrangements in the orchestra and bossa nova beat. A album highlight for sure. This is one of the most recorded songs of all time. Sinatra covers Irving Berlin's "Change Partners " a song orginally written for the 1938 film "Carefree." Nice strings. Al Volia played guitar as Jobim couldn't quite get it. Another big album highlight is Jobim's "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado)." Light bossa nova beat. Strings. I love the horn fade. Named after the Cocorvado mountains in Rio de Janeiro. By my counts, covered my no less than 60 artists. Piano and strings lead "How Insensitive (Insensatez)." A jazz standard song. A song that made me feel like I was in a jazz club was "Baubles, Bangles and Beads." The Robert Wright/George Forrest cover of the 1953 song for the musucal Kismet. A little more upbeat bossa nova beat...very nightclub-ish. It's funny that Sinatra had won the two previous Grammy albums of the year but, this year, this album happened to lose to "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Highway robbery I say. Anyway, Sinatra is fine doing this style. For his singing delivery, I like a few of his earlier albums better. However, the music itself was enjoyable and is recommended.

Smooth. Makes me want to drink a martini at a warm resort

I did... really think this was fun. but it's not something I'd go out of my way to listen to.

Frank. More Frank. Very well - this means we must be closer to no more Frank in the 1001.

Pleasant enough I suppose - I think the Stan Getz albums are a better collaboration

I enjoyed the mix of Bossa Nova, Jazz, and Sinatra's smooth voice. This is nothing revolutionary but it's a very chill album to just put in the background and enjoy.

Less than the sum of its parts. It's like they spent the entire time deferring to each other and forgot to make great music. Best track: The Girl from Ipanema

Nice listen. Frank's music is typically welcome. It's got a nice vibe and can really soothe the soul. I liked this collaboration, it added an extra dimension to what would be the usual offering from Mr. Sinatra.

Sounds nice, is good

A decent album that had some Spanish jazz influence. The girl from impanema is an enjoyable song and I always find the melody fun to listen to. The rest of the album is filled with decent to good songs that are mixed with the jazz influences by Jobim. The last couple songs that are studio sessions are unnecessary and bring the album down a little. 6.4/10

Listens: 4 Enjoyed: I gues Did particularly stand out. Obviously stunning music and a stunning voice but not a significant piece of work in my eyes

everyone’s heard the ipanama song but overall it was better than i expected. i originally rolled my eyes at the thought of a sinatra album but it wasn’t half bad.

Not my usual genre to be sure, so it's a tough one to grade - I think the older I get the more I can appreciate this, even if I don't love it? It's of course by its nature quite light - string orchestras dictating the melodies throughout - and thusly doesn't have much emotional impact on me. On the other hand I can certainly appreciate those well-crafted melodies and the arrangements; whatever one might think of this genre - in some ways it sounds *so* dated that it almost seems new again. Even though it's a "vocal" album I think I like this as background music; and not being much of a vocals fan I'm "whatever" about Frank as a singer, although I will say that I prefer/like when he's quite laid-back which is the case over most of this album. In other words, listening to this feels like I'm watching an Austin Powers movie. 5/10 3 stars.

It’s a short album of seducing girls. 3/5

nyah called it "cute"

a bossa encontra a mafia. nada de novo no front

Great album but no my cuppa on the day

Smooth vocals, bouncy mellow guitar, super schmaltzy strings, a whole lotta sameness.

An iconic voice singing some very pretty arrangements of American standards and bossanova classics. It’s hard to love such an album but it’s a nice, serene listen throughout. Background music for a dinner party if you’re so inclined.

3 star

It's Frank, so pretty good! Not many songs I know but enjoyable enough.

It’s a fine jazz influenced album. Featuring a lovely bit from Ole Blue Eyes. I can’t say I love it all that much but it works.

pretty chill and relaxed its like bar music with a slight latin blend sometimes 3.5

Not too bad

Sinatra is alright to my ears. This album went by very fast. I had it on the background and it was kind of hard to tell the songs apart, they all kind of blurred into each other. It was pleasant but I wouldn’t listen to it again.

pleasant background music 2.75/5 I like Antonios work

Separating the art from the artist, this was just okay. 3/5

Smooth. Good vibes.

I fully expected this album to be an absolute killer of an album, with 2 such great performers joining hands (and voices). Alas, I find the result rather anaemic, with the performances tending towards the boring and uninvolved. In other words, this album has nothing on Getz/Gilberto.

Combining Sinatra's singing with Jobim's bossa nova was a genius move, but I feel like only 3 of the tracks make strong and innovative use of the sound, with the rest being pretty unspectacular, droning bossa nova ballad, in my opinion. I might have even given this album a 2, but those 3 tracks are really bangin'.

It's frank Sinatra, iconic album with some hits still heard in popular culture, but all in all probably really only suits a few settings these days

relaxing listen

A lot of the same shit happening throughout, but Sinatra is undeniably smooth and even a bit druggy sounding. Wish there was more Jobim. The band, the crooning, the lovelorn ballads, sweet record.

This was really interesting. I have a hard time with Sinatra, I want to like him so. bad. But he can be just too perfect for me that after a few songs of his in a row, his voice starts to get to me. However, this album helped that a little with trading the responsibility of signing. It provided some really interesting moments, especially when the two sang together.

I wasn't sure if I would like Sinatra and Jobin together, but it totally works. I'm always going to prefer the original singer for Jobin's biggest songs (esp. The Girl From Ipanema & Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars), but Frank does a great job with every track on here. Further proof that the guy can sing anything.

Jazz, Bossa, Frank Sinatra y Antonio Carlos Jobin.

Smooth and sleazy. Nice in the background.

Not my cup of tea, but chill ia background music.

Interesting treatment.

Frank Sinatra is almost impossible to critique, but I'll make an attempt. This is a very enjoyable album with a very calming jazz samba vibe combined with Old Blue Eyes crooning. Though I will say that no one really needs to bother with "The Girl from Ipanema" as the Getz/Gilberto version is pretty much perfect as is - and we definitely don't need 47 different versions of it. It got a little tedious towards the end.

Great voices and music, if a bit one-dimensional

Bossa nova, 1967. If you think 1967 is the year of "The Velvet Underground & Nico", "The Doors", The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn", "Are You Experienced", "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" this album aged much worse than all of these masterpieces. Of course, there is The Voice in it and the record starts with the lovely "The Girl From Ipanema", but there is really nothing more than this.

Meh to middling. One likes the attempt to pare back a bit, to aim for intimacy and quietude, rather than oversinging as Frank was way too wont to do, but it just fails to move. One wishes editors found other jazz or samba records or others by Jobim rather than this obvious-seeming choice.

Theres a certain coolness to it, but also a certain datedness

its an okay album. even over the nice bossa nova arrangements, this is standard frank Sinatra crooning. I feel like Sinatra doesn't really add much to this album, but I'd be interested in checking out some of Jobim's other work.

ikkje sånn superfan av frank sinatra, men da e ikkje så altfor ille heller

Chill, men ikkje så minneverdig

you know exactly how this is going to sound

The first song sounds vaguely familiar. A legendary singer with an amazing voice. While I wouldn't listen to this regularly it is very beautiful and easy to listen to.

Ok, I didn’t hate it. I like bossa nova. Some of the orchestra and strings is a bit much for me. I like it stripped down. Sinatra has such a smooth voice and his phrasing goes well with the style. But I’d rather listen to a “real” bossa nova record.

La veu sona delicada i vulnerable. I la pressència de Jobim és un plus, així com la versió à là Sinatra de "The Girl from Ipanema".

Not bad. Some ok songs.

The album was alright. Only one song sounded familiar. There are better Frank Sinatra albums and songs. I do not think I would willfully listen to this album again, but if it was playing I would listen.

On one hand it’s Frank Sinatra and that’s very cool. On the other it’s not exactly all Sinatra. I liked the mix and it was good but not 5/5

It's good. That's it.

Everything kind of blends into one another a while, a little one note. Although in saying that, it is a soothing note. Would be a good album to put on for background music if you're into this type of music.

The coolest man ever to be named 'Francis' roles out another collection of smooth swing with Latin rhythms. Pretend you're in the 50s with this (even though it was released in the mid sixties these two refused to change it seems). It's better than catching polio. Best Tracks: The Girl From Ipanema; Change Partners; Baubles, Bangles and Beads

Lush, smooth, sophisticated, wallpaper.

What a goddamn wallower. Quite boring and monotonous, despite good music. 2.5/5.

Mukava levy jota oli helppo kuunnella.

Monta kertaa läpi sunnuntai-iltapäivän kokkailujen ja ruokailujen lomassa, hyvän tuulen levy

At its essence, it's simply more Frank Sinatra, which is never a bad thing. This album is a little more relaxed and acoustic, presumably from collaborating with Jobim. However, I prefer Sinatra's more big band albums and songs. That's not to say this is a bad album; it's just not what I would pick to listen to out of his discography. Favorite track: I Concentrate On You

King of cool

Franco has a great voice but this is too slow and all too similar for my liking

Frank Sinatra is not on my list of music that I listen to. Antonio Carlos Jobim is a welcome addition for this album, but the album still didn't get much past "okay". I'm not a fan of crooner music I guess. I feel like I'm only one or two steps away from elevator muzak.

Solid frank album. Didn’t seem to hear much of the other guy but it was good all around

prefer my samba a bit more psych!

it's Frankie

A nice chill listen, but while I love Sinatra I’m not sure he was suited to this style of music. It’s still good, but it’s no Getz/Gilberto

It was good. Probably wouldn't seek it out again.

Wasn't expecting much from this album, but was pleasantly surprised. Smooth jazz, a likeable backdrop sound

a little boring. 3

I listened to the album several times. Across multiple days. Maybe I'm too busy right now to full appreciate it, but I found it boring. Maybe I just don't appreciate the bossa nova style. Whatever the case, it was average for me.

Nothing special about songs, but nice voice on Francis

Girl From Ipanema is very good, it feels bright and sunny. Lost interest after that though.

First album I've never heard before. After the initial Frank resistance (AKA oh gawd the 'My Way' guy), this is very listenable. All about phrasing and being on, ahead or behind the beat. Subtle and seductive.

Bossa nova Sinatra record. Not really sure how to rate due to the form of his music. Frank is obviously legendary but I don’t have the best grasp on his work to judge musically, So 3 stars.

I thought I would enjoy this more than I did. I love Sinatra most of the time, but this was almost too mellow for me. It didn’t show off the power of his voice.

Pleasant background music.

Quite lovely throughout. Not my favorite Sinatra work, but that's alright. Jobim is a great songwriter. A few songs a really liked, and some I could be fine without. I'll always admire how the stuff Sinatra sings has so much more complexity than the average sappy song today. It legitimately baffles me how difficult it is to find a modern popular slow song or love song that uses more than 4, MAYBE 5, chords. Like yes we get it you copied the same 4 I-IV-V-VI-chords that have been in every song for eons. It's maddening. I don't even love this album, but at least from an artistic, technical standpoint, it's quite great. There are chord progressions here that you'd never DREAM of hearing on the radio anymore.

I like Frank Sinatra a lot, but this album didn't really have any stand out tracks for me. Good listening in the background for sure. Easy listening.

It felt like waiting room music, and I don't mean that in a good way...

Satisfactory

Frank Sinatra is not exactly my thing, but this was a good album and good for the holiday season.

This was lovely. but I was a bit sick of the girl from Ipanema by the end

Kenne nur "The Girl from Ipanema" Respekt. Trotzdem nicht mein Ding

Unexpected good

Sinatra sings bossa nova. Has the girl from ipanima.

Meh He can really sing - obviously, but it all feels a little polished and stilted for me. Decent background music though, and reminds me of my grandad, so that's nice.

Enjoyed

I do love a good bossa nova. There's a reason many of these songs have become jazz standards...this is a great pairing of talents.

3.5/5 I'll have to relisten to figure it out.

Frank Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim deliver a melding of Sinatra’s traditional pop with bossa nova that sounds like it was meant to be. It would be a fitting way to get “Girl From Ipanema” onto the list, but it's already there on “Getz/Gilberto.” So more notably, it was my first time hearing the Great American Songbook classic “Change Partners,” a sleazy song about stealing another guy’s girl.

Sinatra makes great background music. This could be the ambiance at a dinner party, an art gallery, or a movie scene of a meeting of one of the 5 families where their rival busts in, springs a well planned trap, and guns them all down. And Frank, who is in on it, just continues to sing on stage through the whole assault. Once it’s over he and the rival mafia leader nod and wink at each other as if to say, “job well done.”

I've never been able to take Sinatra seriously and I still can't. Jobim is great, but this album would have been better as an instrumental.

3.5 - Sort of sounds like someone had to pay off some gambling debts. I’m not mad at it but I do prefer Astrid Gilberto on these tunes.

It's good. That's it.

Decent background music. Nothing that crazy by modern standards, but I am sure the bossa nova sound getting more mainstream was big at the time. Doubt I would listen again. 3/5

Love Brazilian music, don't get Frank Sinatra.

Some nice easy listening

I have a movie version of what the Rat Pack was like in my head and when I hear Frank Sinatra songs, that's what I imagine. I'm pretty sure that if I had been alive in 1967 this would not have been what I was listening to. But it's a very pro album made by lots of pros and there are several good tracks here, so who's arguing?

Fantastic singer singing some mediocre tunes.

First off, kudos to Sinatra for realizing that Jobim is a major songwriting talent and for having the balls to cover his songs. Sinatra even kind of pulls it off. There is a very delicate balancing act going on here. On the one hand, this is a Sinatra album, with all that entails, so it can't be too Brazilian, both because that would alienate Sinatra's fan base, but also because it would make Sinatra look foolish. But bringing Jobim himself aboard, and allowing him to accompany on guitar and vocals, gives the album a touch of genuine Brazilian flavor. Choosing Claus Ogerman to orchestrate was a wise choice as well--the strings have a more international flair than say, those of Nelson Riddle, one of Sinatra's usual collaborators. And while Sinatra's technical gifts were just beginning to falter, it's hard to imagine an American singer from that time period who would be a better match for the material. Frank had his brassy side, but he could also do delicate emotional ballads, as on his landmark album, Only The Lonely, and he was a master of the insouciance required for songs like I Get A Kick Out Of You, both of which play a large part in Jobim's material. So, in the end, Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim is about as good as you could possibly expect. Frank doesn't embarrass himself and even moves the listener a time or two. And, for those of us who don't speak Portuguese, allowing us to hear these wonderful lyrics in English is a public service. Really, for English language listeners who want to dip their toes in the ocean of Brazilian music, it's not bad. Which brings me to my main complaint. There are dozens, maybe hundreds of much better, real Brazilian albums that could have taken this spot on the list. It's a little like going to China to get Peking duck and getting it at Costco.

Smooth listen, but nothing revolutionary or outstanding from this album.

Great recording.

Umm it was Frank Sinatra. That was the interesting part

Sinatra does bossa nova. And surprisingly, it works pretty well. Real laid back, it’s just a few guys trying to put out a solid record, not change the world. Mission accomplished.

Normally I like this kind of stuff, but Sinatra doesn't sound as good on it as a Bossa Nova specialist. Still, relaxing and soft on the ears.

3* alright background music

a relic of its time, not for me these days, but not terrible.

Solid. In his feelings.

A nice album. Of its time. Better for vinyl I reckon but a nice listen.

I liked it more than I thought I would. Great sounds. What a voice.

Really enjoyed the Portuguese backing and style, not a big fan of Sinatra’s voice though

I knew the first song. And then the rest happened. It didn't change much and Frank didn't wanna fuck around singing for too long with all those cocktails to drink. Short and sharp. Not my kinda lyrics but I was genuinely taken by the horns and string sections. I liked it. I see why old cunts love it.

Good Sinatra vibes but not a total banger

Really enjoyed Jobim’s guitar and lyrics. Pleasant instrumentals backed Sinatra throughout but there was very little energy in his vocals. Less playful or confident than you would expect from him. Good dinner time record.

Interesante faceta de Sinatra.

Ok but repetitive and generic

This album is nice.

The girl from ipanena Change partners Meditation I concentrate on you

Deilig album!

Big time old school club feelz

Girl from ipanema is one of my favorite songs of all time but Frank’s version is not tops. If this played any day aside from Sunday, it prob would have gotten a 2

Highlight is Girl from Ipanema. Otherwise just mostly relaxing and doesn't stand out to me. Don't care to listen to again.

Welcome change up

I prefer big brass Sinatra, but this is still good.

Chillaso dandee latino

Croony goodness

Lounge. Chill. Croon. Vegas. Mafia. Frank.

I mean, great sound. Girl from Ipanema is fantastic as well.

Not much use made out of the collaboration to give it the branding of a Bossa Nova album, but it’s not a bad listen for the background. It simply just doesn’t capture Sinatra at his best or anything remotely Brazilian. For that reason it left an average impression.

If we are here to judge albums then this one is bad. It has 3 times the same song. Even if it is a nice song... Good music, bad collections of songs... definitely not a concept album.

Mellow vibes. Not bad, but not the Frank that I was expecting

Not a big fan of the album, i'm really not into crooning. It was nice enough though.

2classy4me

It's lovely music, but not something I'd ever really seek out. It fits certain settings where it would be perfect and I'd be glad to be listening. A swanky bar for example.

Classico

So many classics but also a decent amount of snoozers. This record does sound amazing on my sound system, though.

Decent album, does fail to live up to expectations though because there's hardly any influence of Jobim visible

Good but not my style

Don’t generally like Frank, but this was pretty enjoyable and relaxing.

Normally, I enjoy listening to Sinatra's sultry voice, but this album didn't do it for me. Weird pauses and off timing, this paring with Bossa Nova didn't work.

Bossa nova? more like Bossa no-thank you!

This is the second time I've heard Girl from Ipanema on this list... I like Sinatra's voice, but this is crazy boring.

Frank Sinatra can't sing bossa nova. A total mismatch - a whole that is less than the sum of its parts.

Don't think I'm a fan of Frank's voice, I was struggling to stay awake by the end of it
