Reviews (page 5 of 8)

This album shouldn't be on the list because it's simply a bad mix. Sinatra and Jobim are both great singers in their own rights. Both work great with the music, Bossa Nova just rocks. But combined here, especially when they are singing, doesn't do anybody a favour. Sinatra sings his slower, quieter grand style while Jobim is also quiet but then needs to get louder to do a bit of scatting. It just sounds off.

13/10/2025 It wasn't great, it was slow, but that is his music. Spotify listeners: Frank Sinatra: 19.3 million Antonio Carlos Jobim: 5 million.

A fine bossa nova album with Frank Sinatra on it - whoopee. 3/5

Sometimes you just need to hear half an hour of Frank Sinatra’s voice. So I’m glad that the list has brought this album to my attention, as I was anticipating more of a certain Mr Jobim. Unfortunately there’s not nearly enough of him on this, which is really quite disappointing. Where he does show up is of course on the first track, which I may even prefer to the Getz / Gilberto version, and that really is saying something. Aside from that obvious choice, there aren’t any songs that properly stand out, which is a great indicator for an album you could stick on hundreds of times and not get bored. In terms of giving it a rating though, it can’t really go into the glorious echelons of an 8.0 or above for me, so take of that what you will. That’s all I can really say about this, it’s lovely. And that’s about the whole picture.

Bossa nova is supposed to evoke Las Vegas, right?

Pretty good album, some songs were just not great

charming! but when i listen to bossa nova i think i prefer it without frank sinatra

Frank with spanish backup, background music The girl from impanema

I didn't know Frank Sinatra did a bossa nova album. It's OK. His voice isn't bad but it doesn't necessarily add anything to the tracks, and they come across as somehow less exotic.

I actually enjoyed hearing Sinatra do Bossa Nova just because it was a bit unexpected. But, despite his voice being great, occasionally this slipped a bit into "Bill Murray lounge singer" territory, and ultimately I prefer Astrud's versions of her two songs better.

Kind of like Fun Lovin' Criminals, you would think that combining two not unrelated things (stoner rock + rap, or, in this case, bossa nova and Frank Sinatra) would result in a cool, better thing. Instead, it feels like Frank is trying a bit hard to be cool and eclectic in a way that feels like your dad putting on Doc Marten's, and some of the bossa nova singing sounds twee and silly with Frank's swagger. Not bad but certainly not improved by meshing together.

Gets off to a pretty hot start, but for me it gets a bit same-y. I've never been a huge fan of Sinatra's conversational singing, but it's used well here. Might pick this one up at a thrift store.

Would this be the first Sinatra album I reach for when I'm in the mood to hear him? No, but it's enjoyable enough.

There's nothing inherently wrong with this album. Frank brings his always great voice. Jobim is a good player and has a cool South American flair. I just don't care too much for bossa nova, evidently. This is just boring to me. Not a whole lot more than that to say. It's very average.

I can see why it’s appreciated and it’s enjoyable but i doubt i’d listen to it again out of choice

This is quite nice. Sinatra obviously has an incredible voice for this style of music, and the guitar playing is really nice. Not sure it adds a great deal to the musical canon but it's cool and smooth

I bet rich people love this shit

Frank Sinatra had the loveliest voice, didn't he? There's little wonder why he was so popular, with a voice like that. I mean, he didn't even play any instruments here, yet the whole album is a delight. Now, I didn't know Antônio Carlos Jobim, but I could easily hear the Latin flare that Jobim contributed to this album. The combination of the two of them is chef's kiss, because Jobim definitely allowed Sinatra to level up. 3.5

It's hard to hate Ol' Blue Eyes, because his voice was just sooooo buttery and lovely. And this album specifically is Frank Sinatra through a Latin lens, which I am all about. So all that to say, I enjoyed it well enough! As for Antonio Carlos Jobim, I was not familiar with him by name, but I DID know "The Girl from Ipanema", so it was nice to tie those threads together. All in all, just a nice, easy listen. No complaints.

fwank sinatra

Smooth and cool, that's Sinatra. Not a bad album.

Too mellow for me. Sometimes even involuntarily funny about the constant distress of the lyrics.....infinite sadness.....cry....goodbye.,...alone....help!!!

Girl From Ipanama = BMF (apparently everyone knew except me). Not interesting overall but pleasant.

Good easy background music

Pretty album cover, nice voices of course, not a huge fan

Crooned his head off

girl from is a fav

Pretty chill album.

Always pleasant to have Frank Sinatra crooning in the background, but I prefer his earlier stuff.

The standardest standard to have ever standard, performed by the standard.

Good vibe for Francis. Ipanema is a great song. Beach perfect. Rest of the album okay as well.

Enjoyable album, I don’t want to write anymore

Impossible to have strong feelings about either way. Overall fine.

I liked this more than I thought I would. I'm not usually big on Sinatra but this is a different gear.

I like this more than any other Sinatra I've ever heard; clearly Jobim's influence.

Elevator music. Glad this one was short.

Probably a good three. Definitely a time and place album.

Jazzy and fun

Favorim Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars I who was lost and lonely Believing life was only A bitter tragic joke Have found with you The meaning of existence oh my love... The Girl From Ipanema da tatlı.

Great version of Girl From Impanema, but as it goes on it does feel more like Sinatra showing off a different music style to his fan base. We're nearly 60 years removed from the context of this, so I can't really speculate as to whether this was needed or not.

Easy to listen to The Girl From Ipanema is iconic but never heard the rest of the album before. Nothing else really stood out to me

Sinatra sings real good, but it's not really his style and it feels a little glib. I know crooners are all about making it sound easy, but it's just a little too much on this album. Still good, and really more of a 3.5. Probably would have been higher if this generator hadn't already given me the Getz/Gilberto album. I was missing Astrud Gilberto's voice.

Classic

These songs were all fine, but not sure I needed to hear all the Sinatra covers before I die. Great vocal performance as usual, 3/5

Easy listening overload. Not my type of stuff, but I can appreciate it.

6/10 help! Help! I've been crooned. Send rock. 7-31-2025

On paper this should be a killer album but it feels flat after a few tracks. Almost as proof that Sinatra can’t groove like the white jazzers in the bossa genre (Vince Guaraldi, Charle Byrd, Stan Getz, etc.)

Frank is great. Although I have not properly toured his other work, I will say this doesn't seem like stand-out work for him. Maybe I haven't listened enough to have a good ear, and I probably never will be sufficiently motivated to. Still, Frank reliably puts me in a good mood, which is certainly a superpower. Realized while writing up my review that I was living less than 40 miles away from Frank when he died in Los Angeles in 1998. At that point I was mostly aware of his existence from one of my favorite Cake songs, released only two years prior.

Classic Sinatra when his voice was at its zenith. I appreciate the artistry, vocals, music, and its place in history.

Very smooth, I kind of forgot to listen because it just played very chill in the background. Pretty short too, I must have listened through it like 4 times before I really thought about it Standouts The Girl From Ipanema Baubles, Bangles And Beads 3/5

You know when I checked global reviews, people seem to be really enhanced by this or they either really hate it. I quite enjoyed it for what it was, but it is not something I would go back to. For me it was a bit of nice background music. Maybe at the time this was really groudbreaking Idk. But imo not that super amazing also not that horrible like people make it seem to be.

Never got into Sinatra but this is a fine album

I didn't hate it. But I didn't love it. A relaxing album, makes sense that Sgt. Pepper won album of the year over it however.

Sinatra is in fine form here and the tasteful arrangements do the songs justice but the album suffers from having nearly every song at the same sleepy tempo.

Nice & respectable

Pretty legendary crossover. That's about it

Sinatra did albums? I thought it was just singles. Nice bossa nova tracks with symphonic orchestra soundscapes. Oh it came out same year as Sgt. Pepper, the last album I listened to. Of course it lost at Grammy Awards. It has all the feels but lacks the originality. After listening to the full album: yes this should have been a single. And Sinatra never got the swing of it. It felt like he needed to concentrate hard to stay in rhythm. Unlike Jobim who felt much more natural.

Not a Sinatra fan (sorry Ma), and I usually can't stand bossa nova, but I was pleasantly surprised by how soothing I found this album. Will I listen to it again? Probably not.

The first Sinatra album we reviewed was also the first chronologically, 'In the Wee Small Hours'. I thought that was magical. The warm baritones, the twilight tunes. 'Songs for Swinging Lovers' I found clichéd and a crushing disappointment. Unsurprisingly I find this somewhere in between. Which is saying something, as I detest insipid bossanova music - hotel lobby, smugly-whispered, impotent pap. The dichotomy of this album is well represented by 'Change Partners' which starts off with the very definition of elevator music. Thankfully it settles into a very nice interpretation of a Berlin classic. Whilst the bossanova guitar rhythm is annoyingly staid, here it feels more like an acoustic interpretation of the American Songbook. And that works well, especially with Frank's voice at its best. A generally tasteful marriage of two styles, and thankfully the bossa nova is restrained for the most part. But it does become a nagging distraction. Nevertheless, some masterful Frank-work puts this in 'good' territory.

This is a 2.5 that I’m rounding up out of respect for the individual artists.

I feel this wasn't a bad album, but I don't think it's his best work. If this is his only one in the top 1001, then I'd be surprised. This one makes for relaxing background music, but not something I'd bellow along with 1 - would not listen to again 2 - if some one played it, I'd probably just zone it out 3 - didn't hate it, didn't love it 4 - saved some songs from the album 5 - would buy the album or already own it

Felt like I was on an elevator but never in danger, so it was a relaxing experience. I’m not sure what was influential or experimental or just generally interesting about this work, especially in the late 60s. I kept thinking about how this album dropped during the Vietnam War and wondering how many young adults this pissed off. I don’t feel like I have the right to have this perspective as I wasn’t present during this period, but it crossed my mind a lot. I guess it wasn’t as relaxing after all. I haven’t listened to a Sinatra album before but I imagine he has to have better albums than this.

Looking at my past reviews for Sinatra records I have this one the highest rating. This does not bode well for the remaining albums. Sinatra really shines at being flat here. I am more interested in what Antonio has to offer at this point.

Watered down Bossa nova.

It's not what i want from a Jobin album, and i don't really care for Sinatra

fínasta raul hjá breimaranum.

Not for me.

*2.5-3 Not the best, not the worst. It's OK. Lyrics are definitely not my favorite and do not flow intensely well. The other singer in the first song seems to have some sound quality issues. Instrumental bits are good.

Interesting combination of styles on paper, not as interesting in execution

Nice interpretation of some old dpngs

From the legend himself. Good story telling in this album, nice and calming.

Ol blue eyes never fails me. Nice relaxing bossa nova on this one. Very smooth and enjoyable.

I was excited to see this because I love bossa nova and this type/era of Brazilian music. This was pretty cool but I think I would enjoy it even more if it was just all bossa nova!

I found this one to be interesting. I am a huge fan of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrud Gilberto and just a fan of Bossa Nova itself. I started listening to the Astrud versions of these songs when I was around middle school age so I am kind of biased. Frank does a great job though and his voice is well suited for this kind of music. I think I am just more used to Astrud's delivery.

One of his weakest

Not his best work

Sinatra does Bossa Nova. Who knew.

Sinatra's all right, but I just didn't love this.

Elevator music for the soul.

I need a cocktail

Sinatra sings this material well but I’d rather just hear these songs in Portuguese

Cool beckground music.

Classy from a different time. Very short though.

Mogs the other 3s tbh

In my opinion, he’s actually better suited for these bossa nova sounds but it’s still too samey to resonate with me.

This is a cool album. Sinatra is not only a great singer, but also a great presenter is music. Sinatra walks a fine line here, respecting the Brazilian songs for their unique Brazilian character, while not trying to Brazilfy himself. Nice listen, three stars.

Fun album. This album ALSO at times felt a bit like background music, but it wasn't bad. Sinatra does have a smoooooth way of singing. Some of these songs/lyrics are sooo sleazy tho. Like the one where he is trying to dance with and (probably fuck) a girl who is clearly in love with (and possibly married to) another man. Idk lolol. Its good but just doesn't really peak like I know many Sinatra hits do Liked Songs: "The Girl From Ipanema" , "Change Partners" , "If You Never Come To Me (Inútil Paisagen)" , "Baubles, Bangles And Beads"

liked songs: The Girl From Ipanema, How Insensitive Good 2.5

3.5 Reading some of these reviews, this work is supposedly one of the more important Sinatra offerings. I prefer the Standards more than this, but good overall. I will check out more of Tony Jobims albums

Good from these two. A nice relaxing listen. I'd love to add this to the collection for Sunday jams.

This is a pleasant album, and I enjoyed the Spanish, but it's just OK.

Such a charming voice

I think Sinatra’s voice works much better in this intimate setting than in the usual grandiose big-band stuff that he’s best known for. I prefer Bossa Nova Sinatra to Swing Sinatra. Favorite Track: The Girl From Ipanema

Sinatra begat Harry Connick Jr who begat Michael Bublé

Gotta be honest, this bored the hell out of me. Just not my thing but I can understand its appeal to a certain generation of lounge lizard rat pack lovers

Classic Frank - Antonio adds more smoothness to it.

Left me craving a martini and a cigarette. Where is my fedora, baby?

I don’t care for Sinatra’s voice, despite Jobim’s playing.

Barely a 3.

I generally like bossa nova and Frank's a fine singer, from what I'm told. But this just seems like Frank singing like Frank over some bossa nova. Sinatra probably only sang like Sinatra, I suppose? 3.5*

3.5 Stars

Good ol' blue eyes. Catchy, and short. I enjoyed it. 3/5

Classic

Always enjoy the Frankster

This is probably my favorite Frank Sinatra album of the ones I’ve heard. But I think this is more about Bossa Nova being a better genre than American Oldies than it is about Frank’s performance on the album. The Girl From Impanema is a timeless classic and holds up way better over time than any original Frank song IMO, but I can’t give this album credit for it. Solid performance but nothing original

I like Sinatra and I like bossa nova but I think they're better served separately. 3.5

good work background music.

I tried listening to it a couple times, I didn’t finish. I didn’t have time, but also I was not feeling in the mood. I really prefer Harry Connick JR.

I like Frank. I got into him back in the early 80's, and became a pretty huge fan for awhile, mixing it into my punk and power pop phase. This is not my favorite album. The Girl From Ipanema is fine, but overrated, and therefore, over-played. Songs for Swinger Lovers is excellent, and one of my favorites. LA Is My Lady is another one I played aplenty, close to his last album, arranged by Quincy Jones. Not sure why I like it, but it spoke to me.

Pleasant to listen to and doesn't overstay it's welcome. Putting Frank Sinatra over bossa nova was a great decision. It does feel quite dated/like music that would be played in a retirement home

I’m not really a Sinatra or a Bossa nova fan, and this combo seems to bring out the worst of both. Hope there are more classic Sinatra albums on the list. 2.5⭐️

Nice voice. Not my style.

Definitely oldie but goldie

Nice as background music, not really my thing.

Sinatra's singing is extremely smooth, and music isn't overdone or too much (thanks to Jobim). It was a pleasant listen on a rather gloomy Friday. But as much as I love bossa nova, I think this style doesn't really suit Sinatra, and the Brazilian musicians, also with their Portuguese singing is superior to Sinatra.

Frank’s sounds a bit tentative and swings not at all, but maybe that approach benefits the songs. Jobim’s voice is thin and wobbly, but the duets still work okay. The arrangements aren’t terribly overdone (always a risk with Frank and this era), nor does he oversing as he’s wont to do (though contrives for gentleness on “Quiet Nights”). Speaking of quiet, that’s the strength of the album. “Change Partners” and “How Insensitive” are highlights. This is light and pleasurable, just avoiding syrupy-ness but never much transcending easy listening. There are better Sinatra records and – more to the point – many, many jazz records (not to mention bossa nova, samba and Jobim albums) that merit inclusion over this pretty middling (and perhaps even exploitative) affair. 2.9 / 3

So gentle and smooth. Like a just-right hot chocolate.

I love Sinatra, and I love Bossa. Yet for some reason this didn't blow me away n the way I might expect it to. I think Bossa just doesn't totally suit Sinatra's style: honestly

6/10 fave: the girl from Ipanema

First ever Sinatra album. I am in no way familiar with the works of Frank Sinatra, though if I'm not mistaken a bossa nova album is outside of his usual wheelhouse. I'm familiar with Antonio Jobim through his song "Aguas de Marco", which I view favourably. I have a good understanding of how this album will sound, but I have no idea of how it will be sung. I'm not sure how I feel about this pairing. Sinatra's vocals are effective on some songs (The Girl From Ipanema), but on others he sounds lethargic and bored (Dindi, Once I Loved). This isn't to say that Sinatra is a bad vocalist. He has a very attention-grabbing voice, which I think runs parallel to the strengths of bossa nova. When I listen to a bossa nova album I want to fall into the atmosphere and mood of these albums, which often means I tune out the vocals in favour of the music itself. Instrumentally, this album is quite good. There are tons of great string sections and there's nothing more naturally appealing than the strum of those bossa nova guitars. The instrumentals are quite samey on the whole, though it's not like the 28-minute runtime causes them to overstay their welcome. Wait, 28 minutes?????? This cheeky Sinatra bastard thought he could pull a fast one on me. Maybe it's just me, but I think an album has to be more substantial than 28 minutes in order to qualify for the list. That length falls into EP territory.

Really classic and really enjoyable jazz and bossa nova standards. Just sometimes the mixing on Antonio's voice really sticks out, we can hear it was recorded on a worst microphone than Sinatra's. fav song : Sinatra/Jobim Medley

Frank's voice is fantastic, and Antonio is a good accompaniment. This is pretty dated, and not a genre I listen to often, but definitely a great one in its class.

Appreciate it for what it is...just not my thing.

Good. Franks voice is superb.

Super smooth background music. As inoffensive as you can get but just a bit... boring?

tot un flow. boníssim.

March 9, 2025 HL: “Girl From Ipanema”, “How Insensitive”, “Meditation” It’s a fine album but feels especially pointless after hearing many of the same songs done better in Getz/Gilberto not that long ago. “Corvocado” is a prime example- it’s on *both* the Stan Getz albums, and has nothing of value added to it by Sinatra’s schmaltz. My ears give it a 3 but if I were ranking purely on how much you NEEDED to hear this, then it’d be a 1 star for sure

Zu den herausragenden Songs gehören The Girl from Ipanema, Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado) und How Insensitive.

Some tracks work better than others but this would’ve been quite a thing at the time - long before Cassio keyboards had chance to annoy the hell out of us, bossa nova was a new thing. Frank rightly didn’t really explore it beyond this, which is a good thing

Ahh. Back in the day, when a good album needed only 28 minutes. And I think this WAS a good album...for when it was released. Listening to it, I'm reminded of the TV show "Mad Men" - men wearing suits all the time and women wearing dresses and heels. Everyone drinking highballs and Manhattans. Neither the fashion nor the music really lasted. In 1967, popular music shifted violently(?) and generationally from "our parents' music" to the Beatles, Small Faces, Jefferson Airplane, Love, The Beach Boys, Cream, the Byrds, the Rolling Stones, the Who, and Young Rascals. No more #1 singles for Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Andy Williams, etc. Times were changing. Per Wiki, this album lost to Sgt. Pepper for album of the year, and Frank lost to Glen Campbell for male vocalist. ⭐⭐⭐ ________________________________ 🎧 LPs reviewed: 69 🎧 LPs left to review: 932 🎧 LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens (5): 15 🎧 LPs I *might* include in my own list (4): 18 🎧 LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine (1-2): 18

Very easy listening but at this rate there won’t be any girls left in Ipanema.

Beautifully talented but I kept wondering if I was listening to the same song on repeat

love the Brazilian samba, if it took Frank to perform this to get others to listen to it then tat's good, not a giant fan of his

Sinatra had a great voice, but bossa Nova generally has aged poorly. Suitable for background music in a department store.

Sehr schön! Drei Sterne.

The voice singing Brazilian music. Nothing like football or carnaval. Very smooth and relaxed. Not bad, but I prefer more energetic music. Favorite song: I concentrate on you.

It's Alright. First cut is a great take on a classic. Unfortunately the rest kind of stays low tempo and mid dynamic and never really grabbed me. Its nice to hear a different side to Sinatra though. But maybe what I'm learning is I just don't like Sinatra. He's fine, but just not interesting.

Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim is a fascinating collaboration that pairs Sinatra’s iconic baritone with Jobim’s masterful bossa nova sensibilities. The album walks a fine line between genius and tension, with Jobim’s subtle brilliance often playing second fiddle to Sinatra’s commanding presence. Tracks like “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars” evoke a dreamy, melancholic beauty, though Sinatra’s voice occasionally feels too forceful for the gentle, wistful tones that define the genre. The charm of this album lies in its lush, bossa nova-infused arrangements, which create an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and soothing. Sinatra’s ability to adapt to this style demonstrates his range as a vocalist, though some tracks feel haunted by earlier renditions from Getz and Gilberto. Despite these ghosts, the album’s overall sound is undeniably pretty, with the orchestra’s warm, breezy flow complementing Sinatra’s voice in ways that feel simultaneously nostalgic and innovative. While the album showcases Sinatra’s taste-making ability and willingness to step outside his comfort zone, Jobim’s contributions remain its beating heart. It’s a shame that bossa nova has been reduced to background music in popular consciousness, as projects like this highlight the genre’s depth and beauty. Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim is not without its flaws, but it is an eminently listenable piece of art, offering a compelling fusion of two musical titans.

jibidibidiba

A bit dated for me.

This album makes me wonder just how many versions of "The girl from Ipanema" are in this collection. Regardless of the number, though, it's hard to beat the 1964 Gilberto version, and poor old Blue Eyes utterly fails to capture the same spirit despite Tom Jobim's presence and piano/guitar work on both versions (respectively). And sadly, as crooning as Sinatra can be, the rest of the album sounds like some Muzak version of a generic English-translated bossa nova album. It says a lot of my cluelessness about the context of 1968 that this album lost out on a Grammy for album of the year to "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"; I wouldn't have ever imagined that something this slow and mellow would even get a Grammy nomination, honestly. An interesting selection to round out the Sinatra albums in this collection.

I enjoyed this though wasn't blown away. Not sure Frank Sinatra is capable of blowing me away, though.

less entertaining and more sleepy than the last one but still pretty good!

Fairly calming. Wouldn't say Bossa Nova is Sinatra's genre at heart though. Soothing vocals and guitar nonetheless!

This is done very well, but I don't care for Bossa Nova personally. If that's your thing, this would be a great album.

I’m kind of surprised Sinatra agreed to this. It was interesting to hear him sing over this kind of music. Obviously a great voice but the songs got a bit one note and the sub 30 minute album still felt long.

what’s there to say that hasn’t been said about “ol’ blue eyes”? as with any sinatra album, the silky smooth vocals shine through. quality listening experience.

I was dreading this but it was better than expected. I think the samba saves it for me. It still is by no means something I'm choosing to listen to, but it's a lot better than it could have been. 2.5/5

hard to know what to say. It's Frank Sinatra doing his thing to a chill bossa nova. yep. that's the album.

Civilized dinner party music if you're drinking wine. Background worthy. First album I didn't get through. It feels very much like a certain time in space. But it's stuck there.

Very chill album. Something I’d like to hear on a beach island. :) Girl from Ipanema is a classic. However the album isn’t dynamic to me.

Just ok

Pretty solid but feels a decade late. More 50s sounding, would be curious of the public reaction at the time. Quiet Nights the highlight.

Listen, when the title of your record is just the full legal name of both stars associated with said record, I think it’s a sign you have something good on your hands. João Gilberto might be the face of Bossa nova music for many, and he is largely responsible for much of its wider popularity. But Antônio Carlos Jobim really is one of the main reasons Bossa nova exists at all. He was the first musician to combine samba with jazz to give the genre its distinct sound. And of course, everybody knows who Frank Sinatra is. Not only was the man a Christmas icon, but I really see him as the great All-American voice. It’s instantly recognizable, and basically unanimously loved. There seems to be contention from some people in regard to this fusion of their signature styles. And while this definitely sounds different compared to the norm for Frank, I don’t think it strays that far away. It’s just a sound people aren’t as used to. But all of the emotion and intimacy he conveys in his music is still present here. And because of the fantastic Bossa nova arrangements done by Claus Ogerman, it’s even more warm and peaceful than a traditional vocal jazz record might be. It may be a little repetitive or one-note at times, which is an issue the genre suffers from universally. But this is such a good time for how short it is, so I can’t really be mad at it. Rating: 6/10

Original was better

This was quite nice - Sinatra's voice is obviously dreamy, and it works quite well with the bossa nova type stuff. That said, it's so laid back it's practically horizontal, it really just washes over you, and it definitely doesn't make the most of Sinatra's talents. A low 3/5.

Not quite as dull as I expected, he's not the most latin of singers, but it works quite well

Fell off after Girl from Eboneba

It's not bad, but I rather listen to the originals.

This Sinatra and Jobim collaboration is smooth, elegant, and perfect for a laid-back mood. Tracks like “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Corcovado” blend Sinatra’s croon with Jobim’s bossa nova rhythms, creating timeless lounge music. It’s not groundbreaking, but for what it is; easy, relaxing background music; it’s hard to beat. Perfect for quiet evenings or classy gatherings.

Sinatra seems sleepy in this one.

Great arrangements, great blending of styles and languages, great album. It's exactly what you think it is, and exactly as good as it intended to be. Another classic album that was recorded over only two days, plus Somethin' Stupid with Nancy was recorded later in the second day.

This was incredibly smooth. I don't think I could really dislike it, per se. But Frank Sinatra doesn't quite work, and when it does, someone else does it much better, so. Meh.

not much happens but its ait

nice but bossa nova always starts getting pretty samey after a couple songs.

Cool, nothing remarkable

It's really cool to hear Frank Sinatra do something different, and I liked this record a lot. It's somewhat repetitive, but still has some beautiful vocals and arrangements.

Frank's voice can't be denied. It's classic. The jazz was nice and smooth, never overpowering the vocals. Everything was just nice and pleasant, but nothing uniquely stood out

It’s fine.

I didn’t really love this. I love bossa nova but I think Frank Sinatra’s voice is too smooth for it; I think the richness and steadiness of his voice makes his vocal style go well with his usual big-band genre because the vocals function as another of the instruments, but in bossa nova I feel like there needs to be a little more texture or else it sounds like muzak. (Not that the vocals need to be edgy or crazy per se; I’m thinking of Astrud Gilberto’s voice for example, which is obviously still beautiful but it’s less flat/even-toned and provides a little more….intrigue to the music I guess.) The few moments where Jobim sang proved this theory for me, so I wish there was more of his singing on here.

Good music for when you go on a scenic boat trip with your FBI-informing mafia associate (after he appears to you as a talking fish in a dream).

It's Frank and he's smooth, but something was off with the effort as a whole.

This is a toughy for me to rate. I enjoyed the music and I don't really have anything against Sinatra's voice but there was something missing.

Hmmmmm......nice. Really nice. All albums should be shorter than half an hour.

my second sinatra in 3 days. coincidentally I listened to this album outside of this project earlier this year so i'm giving it a re-evaluation. although i like both sinatra and jobim's work in general, the combination of them is a little lackluster. sinatra is great but his voice doesn't really work with bossa nova. it's not bad, but it's not great either. very middle of the road.

His voice is beautiful and you can feel the emotion. The band is also beautiful. I feel like this music all blends together after a while. Reminds me of watching Lawrence Welk with my grandparents.

Frank Sinatra has a silky smooth voice. No denying that. But this all sounds like a rehash of the Getz/Gilberto album that was recorded in 1964 (3 years earlier). It's the same samba lounge feeling. It's easy on the ears and relaxing enough but doesn't really do much for me.

Frank Sinatra has a gorgeous voice and the songs are beautifully composed. This was good Sunday morning music, but nothing really grabbed me and made me want more. A nice listen but probably won’t return to it.

pleasant if not a standout

Enjoyable background music

I'm not sure exactly what I think of this. The music is beautiful and Sinatra's voice is still good but they don't really fit together and the whole thing is unnecessary.

Never heard of Antonio Carlos Jobim. Average listen for me other than The Girl from Ipinema

Good calm album to listen to.

This was a very enjoyable album and, as Jeff said, really good morning vibes. As I was listening I was toying with the idea of rating this one a 4, but then we somehow took a detour and ended up in Girl from Ipanema purgatory. I managed to escape, but the main riff still haunts me and reminds me of the 10+minute version of that song.

There's certainly no denying the power in Sinatra's voice, even if the genre he's singing doesn't quite match up to where he excels. At best, this album is a solid entry into Frank's discography, but at worst, it feels lazy, sort of sleepy and a bit underwhelming.

For all his sartorial splendor, Ol' Blue Eyes finds himself a touch overdressed for Jobim's breezy yet balmy Brazilian cocktail hour.

Nice listen

theres something irresistibly charming about this records. not so much a loving embrace, more like a quiet longing, floating down an empty stream. the effect wears off though

Chill album

Ok for what it is. I guess it was cutting edge at the time.

I really enjoyed it until he started playing literally the same song five times. Too much

Lemppari: If you never come to me Vähiten lemppari: How insensitive

I’ve reviewed the two albums by Frank Sinatra, and I enjoyed both of them, but I’m not familiar with Francis Albert Sinatra. Must be a fancy cousin of Frank’s. This album was interesting and different, but I’d say it was only fine. The first three songs were the best part of the album, and I enjoyed hearing Frank Sinatra sing along to some Bossa nova songs. After that though, most of the album sounded pretty much the same to me. The orchestra sounded great, and I enjoy Sinatra’s singing, but the novelty wore off on this album pretty quickly. “Change Partners” was probably my favorite song on the album. The lyrics were really clever, and Sinatra does really well when he’s singing a song that lends itself more towards storytelling and narration. I wouldn’t mind having this on during a lazy Saturday morning around the house, but it’s not the sort of thing I’d seek out often.

fine but boring. i would probably appreciate it more if i wasn’t sitting in a dorm room playing clash royale

Tip: only start of with a really good song if the album if the record holds up to that. I only felt disappointed as the record went by instead what could have been a pleasant suprise deep in the record.

Nice to wash over you. Good background music.

Pretty tame. Felt like I was walking the aisles of local Kmart circa 1991. 2.5/5

A nice relaxing background album 3/5

Totally fine restaurant music

Nice easy listening here.

I love a bit of big band and this is no exception. Would I listen to it regularly, no.

Another day, another Sinatra. Defines a genre, yes, classic tunes, yes, do I love it, no.

I get it. Frankie Sinatra is one of the greats and has the voice of a god. However, this album doesn’t have any standouts. I actually listened to this on the car with Carly and we both agreed that a lot of the songs sound so similar. For this to be bumped up to a four, I would need at least 1-2 songs to try something different. A different tempo, a different something. Sinatra will always be a great, but I can’t say I would listen to this album front to back with the exception of hosting someone from the older generation.

Hot take, the song the girl from impanema sucks. Y’all know I like the classics but I’ve always hated this song for some reason and never understood why it was so popular. I do imagine that no one else at this time was having both English and Spanish lyrics in a song so that’s kinda cool I guess. I really am not a big “bossa nova” fan. Give me big band or GTFO. This album is at minimum 3 stars just because Sinatra voice is a top ten of all time.

Smooth and easy to listen to. Not a huge fan of the bossa nova sound but it wasn’t too bad.

Every song on this album sounds the same.... and I think that works in its favor. This feels like music that should be playing in the background of a very fancy restaurant. The only thing missing from the recording is the sound of clinking dishware, quiet conversations, and every song being followed by a polite golf clap. I've always been a fan of Frank Sinatra's voice and the blend with bossa nova is a fun mix.

Listened to this while playing Roll Player solo. I won! I really like Jobim's music...I've definitely played a lot of these on the piano. Francis was not the right choice to sing these songs though. It sounds like when an opera singer tries to sing a Broadway or pop song. 4 stars for Jobim, 2 for Francis.

Frank bossa nova. Lots of Ipanema.

Sinatra's buttery vocals go on almost anything. This was no exception. But this wasn't anything more than just good. A solid 3.5/5.

The soundtrack to an inoffensive Sunday matinee. Grand as background music

Frank's a vibe

Sinatra sings bossa nova

Started off strong but never really kept up the momentum. I think the two of them work incredibly well together, I just wish they got a little more creative.

Mysigt album Bästa låt: Girl from Ipanema

I love Sinatra but this is light on dinner party music. Sedate but charming though nothing groundbreaking to set the world on fire

As much as I enjoy some Frank, and I also enjoy a blast of Bossa Nova classics... I'm not sure I'm totally on board with a mash up. That said, the girl from Ipanema will always get extra *s regardless of who sings it

Sinatra kinda sounded the same across the songs, it was a good sound but noticeable when going track to track. Wish Jobim was more prominent but good overall

It's nice. Good job, guys

Pretty nice! Just not super my vibe.

Frank is great dinner party music for me. But I would never just listen to him on a drive or something.

Eaaa….zy! Smooth but maybe a bit too samey. Enjoyable as background wallpaper but nothing to write home about. It does remind me of being on a cruise in Norway where the lounge bar act performed Girl from Ipanema in scandi-wegian accents. Fabulous juxtaposition. Frank does Frank and does it well. My friend named her car Frank because it’s a classic and gives a smooth ride. Don’t expect anything else.

When I pulled this album up, my first thought was, "If 'Yesterday' is the most covered song in history, I bet 'The Girl From Ipanema' must be the second." I did a quick Google search that resulted in: "It ['The Girl From Ipanema'] is believed to be the second-most recorded pop song in history, after 'Yesterday' by The Beatles." I guess a recording of a song by the writer isn't a cover, but I think this settles the debate as to whether I'm Mensa material. Here's another example of my prejudice influencing my take on an album. I can't abide Frank Sinatra, though I can't really find fault with this recording. It's well produced, the performances are good, you can hear that care was taken in the making of this record. And, while by today's standards, this might be best enjoyed in an elevator, I suspect this was pretty novel for its day. But... whatevs. I cannot warm up to Frank Sinatra. I don't know that I can describe it, and I mentioned it in a previous review, but there's something so overtly confident and intentionally cool (or hip, in the parlance of the time) that makes me feel gross. Maybe I'm just a knee-jerk reactionary. Or just a jerk. I guess I'll have to live with that. 17th floor...

Another one I liked more than I expected to. Back when I was in my Sinatra phase, I always avoided this album. Not sure why. Maybe I thought it would be too muzak-y. (Which, let's face it, it does sound like elevator music, though it's a rather nice elevator.) I don't know that the arrangements always serve the songs, and things do get a bit samey (it might have been nice to strip things down to just a guitar for a song or two), but you can't beat the material. ACJ was a hell of a songwriter. And even the songs he didn't write are performed well here. Not sure that any of these performances are the definitive versions of these tunes, but Frank's delivery allowed me to better understand the songs' meanings for the first time. Not sure this is a must-hear album, but it's a classy, if a bit middle-of-the-road collection of classic songs, all performed with sensitivity.

I like the collab but I have to admit....I've never understood Sinatra's superstardom.

Bossa nova is probably the safest genre for avoiding any hate, and this is no exception. Hard to hate on it too much since it sounds generally nice, but nothing crazy new or groundbreaking about it. I think Getz + Gilberto did it better. 5/10

Smooth like a creamy peanut butter

Change Partners is a pretty fucked up song. Relax Frankie. The rest of this is alright I suppose. Swanky stuff. Whatever

The whole album is kind of centred around The Girl from Ipanema. Great song with a good arrangement. The rest of the album is more of the same.

Very good and pleasant. Not sure how much I ever need to hear it again. 3/5

Easy listening 3/5

Bossanova baby. Catchy in places like the clap. No bad

This is camp, can't wait to sneak it onto a date night dinner playlist this summer.

I was so certain this would be an easy 5 stars- what's not to love? Sinatra! Jobim! Bossa Nova for days! But somehow it's less than the sum of its parts. The bossa nova sounds so much less sincere in the voice of a classic crooner. I had not listened to this one before, and it's definitely not going into my regular rotation.

Pretty nice relaxing album for a rainy morning. His voice is incredibly calming. I kind of hate a lot of the lyrics though

Smooth sound with a bit of a sleepy vibe. As a collaboration, I don't particularly feel like this works, but when it does, Jobim deserves most of the credit. Fave Songs: The Girl from Ipanema, Change Partners, Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars

Very lazy vibes. Good music but definitely feels like something they had to get done in an evening and then smoke their 50th cigar

I'm not the world's biggest Bossa Nova Fan, but it helps when it's presented by one of the best singers of all time. The result is a very laid-back, relaxed album that is very easy listening in more than one regard. It is also over before you know it, not overstaying its welcome by one bit. A solid 3/5.

6/10 A Bossa Nova Sinatra album? Ok. So laid back it’s horizontal, gives real “bang it out in an afternoon” vibes Sinatra’s voice is excellent, but he really never seems to enter top gear or commit to this An enjoyable but extremely slight entry into the list Best: The Girl From Ipanema

Great voice, dull music

It’s Frank. Singing Bossa Nova. I listened while making fruit salad and hors d’oeuvres for a school event. It was perfect for that. But there’s nothing that exciting that’ll bring me back.

so many tiktok sounds and little snippets you here a lot on these albums. girl from ipanema is really good though. puts you in a certain mood, could be fun to put on when youre with someone (like eating or cooking or something like that). some songs feel a bit like one long song. 3,5.

Francis Albert Sinatra is great at many things, GOAT even, but bossa nova does not appear to be one of them. Which is a shame as Antonio Carlos Jobim and Claus Ogerman really set him up for success.

Oldie definitely. I digged it! But definitely need to be in a certain mood for this album.

Beetje slap maar wel relaxed

This is lovely… but I can’t help but want some more upbeat songs mixed in.

Best Song: Girl from Ipanema. This song has such a playful rhythm to it that it's difficult to find faults with it. Worst Song: Dindi. Tonally just too far a contrast from the preceding track. Overall: I really felt like there was a bait-and-switch after that first fun song. Everything else that followed was much more understated, and although slick and buttery, I still think I would have preferred a bit more energy. Music for dark rooms and steakhouses that haven't updated their decor in 40+ years.

very cute

mate, she's just not into you

I like Frank Sinatra, but I have not heard this record before. It is smooth jazz at its finest and a great selection of hit songs with a bossa nova flair. I think just about everyone has heard "The Girl from Ipanema". It's a great tune and well done on this record. A very relaxing listen, which would definitely be playing in the background while lying on the beach.

This was better than I expected.

Frank Sinatra's voice is wonderful. The music is super chill and easy listening. I was feeling stressed all day and this honestly helped me feel less stressed. A lot of the music reminds me of Animal Crossing for some reason though haha. None of the songs really blow me out of the water but overall it's a pretty decent record.

I liked this way more than I thought I would. I think I've mostly heard the big hits that at this point kind of sound cheesy(even though they're probably not.) I really like how chill and jazzy this one was. Super mellow and soothing. I enjoyed it. Vibey.

Somehow both lush and spare. This is just lovely. So many spicy chords and inversions that somehow also feel smooth and effortless. There's a warm simplicity to these songs that just seems to wrap around you like a familiar soft blanket. The shtick started to wear thin by the fifth song for me, though, and I didn't complete the album. Doubt I'll be returning.

A little jarring to hear Sinatra singing along to these songs, I associate him with standards, jazz, crooning. I was already familiar with Jobim and many of his songs, but I was surprised that this collaboration had happened. It's a good listen of two supremely talented people enjoying each other's sounds. Maybe I'm too much of a purist to give it a huge rating but I definitely enjoyed it.

"Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim" - imagine a musical dinner party where Sinatra's the charming host and Jobim's... well, sort of there? Three stars for the album where Frank’s smooth crooning takes a bossa nova holiday, but Jobim, the genre's icon, seemingly forgets his Portuguese at home. It's like inviting a world-class chef to your kitchen and then just using him to pass the salt. Sure, Sinatra serenades the bossa nova with the ease of a seasoned pro, but the lack of Jobim’s vocal and linguistic flair leaves us tasting the appetizer without ever getting to the main course. A beautifully missed opportunity to blend Sinatra's baritone with Jobim's Brazilian genius, leaving us whispering, "Garçom, could we get a bit more Jobim on the side, por favor?"

Not quite an artistic marriage made in heaven. Jobim is perfection on the guitar, but Sinatra seems ill at ease with boss nova.

I mean, it’s frank Sinatra… but not my thing.

Fabulously syrupy schmalz!

Kinda chill, really enjoyed the performance

A good listen while working. Dudes such a sleezeball cringe lord though

Like I said previously, Sinatra is a boring singer. Technically proficient and consistent, but bland. He really can't sing bossa nova. Lack of a better word, but it's so god damn white. 2.5/5

It has nice backing tracks vocal performances. However, I like you Frank but your voice doesn’t really match with the Bossa-Nova Stylle most of the time, in fact my favorite moments were when Antonio was singing. But those moments were few and far between to really make this record for me.

We've reviewed three albums with The Girl from Ipanema so far. This is skilled and so mellow. I think I preferred the other Bossa Nova albums we've heard but this is well done.

I'm going to ignore the fact that this is the third or fourth time Girl from Ipanema has been on this list. I'll also not think about Frank Sinatra. A nice album for an overcast comfortable day. Solid orchestration. Danceable.

Nice chill is good

Well played, and well sung. Smooth as silk, and sounds like a million dollars on my headset. But, the lack of resistance also means it leans towards being good background music, more than it is exciting and engaging music to listen to.

Certainly enjoyable but as an album didnt break through as outstanding.

Interesting mellow Frank album. I’m not a huge fan of his renditions but I am sure it was revolutionary in its time.

The voice is still in fine form, but I think this pales in comparison to his very fine late 50’s/early 60’s work.

Frank Sinatra has an astonishing catalog. He released successful albums throughout his sixty-year professional career. This album, Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim, was his experiment into bossa nova, a gentle style of samba music that was popular in the 50's and 60's. While interesting, this is far from Sinatra's best work. The songs are pretty, but not particularly noteworthy. Jobim was known as the father of bossa nova, and his collaboration with American artists helped bring the music to audiences outside of Brazil.

Elevator music with Sinatra vocals. Easy listening, not bad songs, but nothing I would look forward to hearing again. Very easy to drown out.

favourite song: the girl from ipanema meh

I enjoyed listening to this album. It’s out of my wheelhouse, glad it was on the list.
