Reviews (page 5 of 7)

A different genre of music then I'm used to. Took a few listens to appreciate the sound, but I came to really enjoy it

Entertaining and a fun mix of music and story.

Intersting

I liked the first half, had a lot of forward Momentum and nicely arranged, second half with the story was not as interesting other than it felt like pre-prog and too cute.

Progressively got more and more psychedelic. Very interesting experience, 3/5. Favourite song(s): "Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake".

Weird stuff, almost felt like it was trying to hard to be weird.

I remember these guys but not really impressed with their music. Typical 60s British psychedelic stuff.

Not bad.

Average, I liked the story telling tie ins between songs; that was kinda fun

Pretty alright, I thought the story telling stuff at the end was fun.

Nice flow!! I liked it a lot until the second half. Was not a fan of the monologues. Last part of the album tried to be weird but forgot to try to be good. The highs were high but the lows were low enough to bring down my would have been 4 star rating to 3 stars. Favorites: Song of a Baker, Lazy Sunday

Unusual, but good album

First I didn't thought I like this album but endet up listening two times during cleaning and it was fun! A lot going on and somehow has a Monty Python feeling and the talking bits are nice.

The second album I have never heard of before taking this on, and an almost lethal dose of British-ass whimsy. I have no complaints, but it's easy to see how many better artists built off of this framework.

I could listen to this over and over again.

I like it. It's an interesting cross between The Who, Cream, and a hint of The Beatles.

I've been meaning to listen to this for a decade - what a wait for such a strange thing!

Quite enjoyable late 60s rock. The first half has some diverse tunes. The second half is so interesting. For some an absurdist concept it could fall flat but it’s good. The skits will likely hurt replayability.

Ok. Some good sections but not inspiring.

Psicodelia divertidad, a veces recuerda a Jendrix, a veces a los Beatles.

This was odd. Really odd. It’s alright but it just has a weird vibe to it. The beats were great, it’s just the lyrics. And they do this weird fade out then back in toward the end of the song. Just odd.

DemaPsychedelic rockpsychedelic pop. Muchas canciones repetidas.

It was about what I expected, perhaps a little more whimsy than necessary. 6/10

Very British

I like the Small Faces (much more than The Faces, but that’s not for now); they were one of the bands my dad’s CD collection introduced me to at a young age. Itchycoo Park was my favourite but Lazy Sunday wasn’t far behind, so it’s good to see that on here in among some pretty strong tracks on side 1. Side 2 takes a bit of getting used to but ultimately I became a fan - the narrator’s playful manipulation of the English language is quite a marvel and the fairytale concept surely offers something unique to the 1001. 3.5

I signed up hoping to be exposed to new music -- instead, I've been bombarded with mediocre dudebro 60s psychedelia for what seems like album after album. I'm beginning to suspect the author of the 1,001 albums is a boomer.

Great psychedelia. Some particularly strong tracks and some filler. The title song is probably my favorite track from the album. Good early concept album.

100% new to me. What an odd little journey of an album.

An interesting listen. Supposedly the first rock concept album from 1968. Love those Britts! Not bad. I've heard of these guys, but have never heard any of these songs. Good time going back in time.

DemaPsychedelic rockpsychedelic pop. Muchas canciones repetidas.

DemaPsychedelic rockpsychedelic pop. Muchas canciones repetidas.

Ample, très 60s, rappelle un Hendrix plus carré

Having not really listened to much Small Faces, this is not what I expected. Ogden's Nut Gone Flake is a nice little sampler of Pschodelia and an interesting exploration of the concept album format. 3/5.

Psychedelic/progressive combo 3.5

Goofy spoken word between Yellow Submarine era Beatle-ish pop. Not bad!

I don't think I've ever been more confused after finishing an album. I think I enjoyed it, but I genuinely don't know.

Well written. Some surprising best and chief change. Fun. 3 stars

Quirky one. Like if Sgt. Pepper went straight to VHS. The first track was awesome but the rest was just ok.

Ok. Decent listen.

OK 60s stuff but nothing to write home about.

The opening piano chords of the title track are promising, and futuristic for 1968. I liked Rene and Lazy Sunday. The Happy Stan fairy tale doesn't work for me, if for no other reason that spoken word (especially goofy spoken word) can only be listened to once or twice before you want to move on. Case in point, The Gift by Velvet Underground.

Oväntad bra start. A-sidan trevlig med inspirationer från Hendrix och the Doors. B-sidan haltar mer

It was a good little jam but didn’t blow me out of the water - 3

Barely 3. The lowest possible 3. 60s concept albums were all at least mildly insufferable. At least some interesting things happened on it.

Pretty fun

Ach I loved the first half of this record, but then the second half got all cockney whimsical... put me right off, it did.

i wish i liked it more because it's interesting compared to similar bands in a similar time period but im still not crazy about it. definitely better than a lot of other bands so far

Interesting psychedelia. They were definitely stoned while doing this one. I enjoyed listening to this, but it is dated.

Weird af

If you're gonna do British music, do British music, and this was the Britishest music of them all. 3 union jacks out of 5 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Despite the odd title, many of these songs are right up my alley. It’s a typical 60s rock album... to start. Not a fan of the musical theatre during the last few tracks. Low 3.

An album that sounds like it is from 1968. I do enjoy the split stereo sound that many artists used back then. I have always heard of the band, and I know a couple of their songs. Going in to this one, I didn't recognize any of the song titles. Lazy Sunday was somewhat recognizable... Of all the songs on the album, it really stands out as the 'funest' / best track on the album. Standouts: Lazy Sunday Others: Afterglow of Your Love, Mad John, Song of a Baker, Rollin' Over, Rene, Happiness Stan, Ogden Nut Gone Flake It was a fun listen. I'd throw it in a playlist of other late-60s bands like the Kinks. 3.5 / 5

Groovy. Austin powers vibes

Meh, I heard foxy lady in one of the songs

way back as a teen when I discovered nuggets and British psych and stuff this was an all timer in my head and probably even something I would post about on message boards but I’ve never really loved it compared to some other small faces stuff nor as much as other Faces records, and mostly that’s because I find the second side a complete miss.

generellt charmigt och kul/coolt med det experimentella. Tycker första låten, happiness stan och afterglow of your love utmärkte sig! Texterna med massa mat och typ recept i song of a baker och the hungry intruder är väldigt real. Dock blev jag lite rädd

Roligt o bra album

This record is as if the Oompa Loompas were given a record contract and THIS was their first album after getting stoned and being inspired by the cover of a Tobacco label. Part of it's great, part of it is weird English 60s psychedelic rock.

Really weird but in a fun way

The opening track is phenomenal, then it devolves into a kind of poor man's version of The Kinks. Listenable but very same-ish.

This was certainly had some decent late '60s sounds to it, and got kind of cute at moments, but I'm not exactly hungering to hear it again.

cortito y al grano, esta sicodelia se escucha muy bien

I'm not mad at giving this album a listen, i've always liked the charm of a lo-fi production. I think my main issue here is the extended spoken word passages in the second half, along with the fact that a lot of the tracks feel like interludes on the way to something that never quite arrives. The songs themselves though are nice enough to listen to, there's plenty of variety throughout to stop any boredom creeping in, but I don't think i'll be returning to it anytime soon.

psy rock. not the worst. not the best. 5.5/10

I liked the music on this album but the spoken parts got pretty old pretty quick.

Meh. Disc one was decent, with very different styles from song to song. Afterglow, Long Agos and Worlds Apart, and Song of a Baker were the best, in my opinion. The fuzzy guitar sounds in the title track are admirable too and Lazy Sunday is cheeky fun (feels like an inspiration for Blur). Disc two was strange. Without disc two would this album be on this list? I'm not sure. I didn't mind the strange narration and splicing of songs; it's creative I guess. I don't think it's all that noteworthy though. So an eclectic and admirable mix on disc one and a kooky theme on disc two. On the strong side of 3 but still meh.

A concept album that waits proportionally long to cohere, in nonsense-English style guaranteed to tickle certain ears. It's rather short to teach one anything about Small Faces; The spin on psych requires only a gentle push. Tasty.

Cool concept album but maybe not the best for commuting

I was actually surprised when I knew Lazy Sunday. Enjoyable album

Weird but catchy. Lazy Sunday was a recognizable one but can't really see myself seeking this one out again

Psychedelic and relaxing, doesn't massively stand out but enjoyable overall. 3.2

Good 60s rock with excellent organ. Crazy as a box of frogs narration by Stanley Unwin of side 2s psychedelic quest story.

Some of it sounds great, some of it sounds horribly dated

This grew on me, particularly through the second half. The narrative element is pretty superfluous but I liked having it there. The music itself is fairly simple but I like this era in rock because it isn’t super overproduced.

Now in stereo! They really lean into the stereo panning effects. Weird story telling. The fanciful language is a nice balm after the fucking brutal beatdown that was yesterday's album but this is weird.

I wonder why they chose this album as the sole representative on this list. I mean, I get that it was a hit, back in '68. But I just don't understand the love. Even Allmusic gives it 5 stars. Frankly, I find the second half of the album unlistenable. But the first half is cool, with a couple of great tracks, so straight down the middle. I love The Small Faces. Their first two-and-a-half albums (their discography is confusing, due to various label shenanigans) are brilliant. Their first one is better than the early Who and their song "You Need Lovin'" inspired "Whole Lotta Love." (When I say "inspired," I mean, Plant ripped off Steve Marriott's vocal stylings outright.) And There Are But Four Small Faces has one glorious track after another. Well, whatever. It's good to hear any Small Faces, but this one's popularity has always confounded me.

This hit right as I walked through a new city.

goofy brit psychedelic rock energy, featuring a happy-go-lucky vibe and some nonsense lyrics. modestly pleasant, even with antiquated mixing and an overall musty smell

For the first time ever, I 💚ed track number one on an album. The rest is a bit dated and bawdy though.

There seems to be a big contrast between the first and second sides. The second side of the album hugely lets the album down. First side was strong and I was quite impressed by 'Lazy Sunday'. Could've easily been a 4 star album if second side wasn't so bad.

Enjoyable.

Mods.. quite nice

Oké, maar niet super. Ik voelde weinig bij het luisteren van dit album

dumb name

Back and forth between thinking “poor man’s Kinks” and “as good as a Kinks album.” Love the genre but may need more time with this one to enjoy

I feel like there was some really special stuff in here, but I was too distracted and didn't listen intently - as I feel concept albums need. The music never really fully grabbed my attention, but I was still enjoying listening to it. I feel like this needs a second listen.

Some good songwriting but I found Happiness Stan to be tedious and not that enjoyable.

I liked Rene, this album has some good vibes and it was fun. The stories towards the end of the album are strange and I didn’t care for those.

Enjoyed this album overall. Psychedelic Beatles vibes. Afterglow was my favorite song.

It's alright, nothing more really. Lazy Sunday is a banger tho

Fine, I guess

An album once could describe as "silly" 😂 humourous lyrics throughout and I'm sure they would have been a joy to have seen live. I'm not so sure this was a top album to listen to before I die, but nonetheless I appreciated the variety!

Pretty fun

Tramsigt och skojigt!

Likably slapdash and rootsy-groovy, and sorta proto-Kinks. Album gets sillier and less interesting as it goes along, feels like an overreaching, like they wanted to get into something like high concept, when the playing is quite sufficient on its own. Spoken word stuff is total waste of time and disrupts the flow.

Don't know enough to have an informed opinion about this, but. OK, interesting.

The music was good, I liked the psychedelic pop style. Had a bit of a folksy twinge to it which I appreciated as well. First track pulled me in, had a hazy vibe going on. I may rate it higher but the Happiness Stan fairytale on the second half didn’t do it for me, too much storytelling on an album for me, just give me tunes. 3 stars

86 / 1069 Starts out strong, Lazy Sunday I knew and had played to death many many years ago. Other than that not overly exciting. Worth a listen, but tracks 1, 2 and Lazy Sunday are the ones you need to hear. Second half doesn't come off how I think they wanted it to.

Never heard of these guys before. Some decent 60s psych rock. Songs like The Hungry Intruder and The Journey were solid.

I really liked the first side, but the second side was too wacky for me, especially the narration. Favorite song: Afterglow of Your Love.

Je suis fatigué patron

qualité dégressive

The idea that our knowledge has limits depresses me. How do we know that anything is real? How do I know that Small Faces really made this record? Suck my tits, you utter sex syringe. My French girlfriend shrugs.

Lamb chops for breakfast.

This was fun. Interesting mix of that classic Small Faces sound, with wanderings into psychedelia and prog. Well made album, quirky and full of creativity and charm. I was less of a fan of the conceptual bits of the second half, but it grows on you if you give it a chance. Fave Songs: Song of a Baker, Afterglow, Long Agos and Worlds Apart, Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake, Rene, Rollin' Over

Good fun album. Really enjoyed Lazy Sunday, Mad John, and Happydaystoytown.

November 4th, 2022. Alright. Some really good songs there. Some sleepers. Ruined a bit by the weird mixes (both mono and stereo).

I guess there are some good moments here, but overall it's just kind of "meh" to me. Maybe it's my shitty computer speaker, but it didn't sound great, like the production was just so-so. In summary, it's not bad but also not super interesting. 3 stars.

Personally I loved the storytelling especially the interstitial bits. For 1968 what an innovative album.

Kind of lost in the era and genre. Nothing really jumps out to me.

started strong, fell off

cool psych but i can't hack that second side with the narration

This is nuts, kinda dig it

"Nut Gone Flake" is a phraseI don't want to see, say, read, or think about. This album isn't bad, tbh. Pretty unremarkable..

The title track is the music from the excellent trailer to GTA 5. Everything else I really didn’t connect to.

Nice albulm and very different for rock.

So fun. Solid classic rock album, good drum solo, and those delightful narrations throughout. I think Mad John or lazy would be my favorite.

This album was fun. I can't say much more about it. I have no real critiques or compliments. It was just fun.

3, I like

This is a tough one. That opening sounds way more modern than I expected. If Fat Boy Slim never sampled that, then he's lost a step. None of the tunes stuck with me, but I enjoyed listening to all of them. I liked the exact level of weird humor here. It never took itself too seriously, but it also wasn't a parody - at least not a parody of anything I could recognize. The production is over-saturated and carries a great groove most of the time. If the songs were just a hair more catchy, this would be an essential album for me.

Very much of its time, but charming for all that. Really thought the chirpy Cockney hokum on the big single would bug me more than it did. Decent variety of styles on display here too. Yeah, I can dig it.

What an odd, fun bird. Genuinely loved “Afterglow” and the drum sounds on most of the straight ahead rockers. The hard turns to cockney drinking songs and spoken word intros gave the whole thing a feel like I was flipping through the channels on a UK tele back when there were only three channels. I felt like it didn’t finish strong but the journey was interesting.

More generic 60s rock, but nothing bad about it

It is a good album, but certainty a very interesting and strange album. I got a little overwhelmed at times, but was very intrigued at others. I though enjoy other psychedelic albums and other concept albums from the era better.

DemaPsychedelic rockpsychedelic pop. Muchas canciones repetidas.

Weird album, but cool

What the hell is he talking about

Bello, parte subito psichedelico.

The fucking narrator 😒

Pretty ok

Weird but cool vibes

A mixed bag, reqlly enjoyed some of it. The narrated bit was up and down though, but i did enjoy the giant fly being tickled.

Weird psychedelic nonsense. The parts without the talking sound damn good. Best track: Afterglow

The more quaint and quirky British tracks I’m getting on here the less appealing I’m finding it. Some great music on here, in parts but knocked back down by the silly little spoken word stuff and messy use of faze and effects.

Bizarre. Psychedelic. Electronic. Interesting. This album is very experimental, and includes some production techniques I have never heard on a record this old. I was very intrigued by the first half of the album, but got fatigued/bored through the second half. I was also not a fan of the spoken gibberish towards the end of the album. Very cool and inspiring, but not a keeper for me. Fave tracks: Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake, Rene

I had never heard of these guys. Pretty fun psychedelic-rock album. The flanger/fade effect on the title track keys/synth sounds very modern, kinda reminiscent of Tame Impala. Afterglow is a surprise banger, super digging that one. The rest of the first half is basically standard psych-rock from that era. The concept/story through the second half is pretty silly, but points for trying. I don't think I've even seen a half-concept record before, so that's something of note. Overall I find the recording quality to be not great, the cymbals are quite washy and a lot of the big hits sounds echo-y, especially in the acoustic sections like Rene or Mad John. But it's an old album, I'll give em a pass. Fav tracks: Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake, Afterglow

04/19/2022 Wild opener; thought my headphones were fucked, lol. Was really digging this until the bizarre narration begins. Wish I could have listened without all that!

Pretty fun album with some catchy melodies. Not heard much of these guys but I'll probably seek out more of their albums.

Well, shit. This is the most aggressively British album I've heard in a while. It was all right, I guess--enjoyable catchy songs mixed with forgettable, so-so tracks. Fave track: Lazy Sunday. It has a jaunty yet cozy sound to it.

ambitious conceptual album, decent psychedelic sounds

Groovy right out of the gate, from literally the first note. Raw, ragged and rollicking, the Small Faces made a big sound and seem to be having a big time doing it. More garage-rocky than trippy or psychedelic, the all-out drum rolls and coruscating hooks and crunches, are nicely complemented by the keyboard flourishes and committed vocals. The music is great overall, but the spoken word story is silly and adds nothing, knocking this down to a 3.

Not bad but nothing special and I'm unclear why it's on this list

Interesting

Muchly enjoyment made was the twisty turny razzle dazz of goodly phras-ed musics. 3.6/5

Odd album but not bad overall, definitely unique

A new band and new music for me. I listened with headphones, and the band did a few interesting things with the stereo recording. Some of the music was odd, but not completely off-putting. In general the music seemed to fit somewhere between early Pink Floyd and the Moody Blues. The very last track, "HappyDaysToyTown" reminded me of Donovan's "Mellow Yellow". I'm still not sure what to think about this album other than that it is okay.

A concept album that if released today would pop up on some indie station. Their psychedelic sound is pretty chill and easy to listen to. Didn't really enjoy the speaking parts throughout the album - but I guess that's what you get from a concept album. Best: Long Agos And Worlds Apart Worst: Happiness Stan

Not bad, if I want proggy stuff though, needs to be weirder

Leppoisa pläjäys.

This type of Brit-rock of the era in general doesn't do much for me. It's like if the Beatles never moved past their early works.

Rolig och rätt bra!

Remember it and enjoyed it.

Steve Marriott has a great voice. Although I prefer his work with Humble Pie, this was very good just not as bluesy.

Loses a point for too many skits

It felt like two different albums. The first half was rock-ish and very 70's-like, of which I thought was fantastic. However the second half was a bit like a children's story with a narrator and child-like songs, of which I thought was weird and wasn't cohesive with the first half. Favorite track: Afterglow of Your Love

boh non l'ho ascoltato praticamente, pero sembrava carino, ma non fa per me

Rock maar het klinkt een beetje chaotisch dus het spreekt mij niet erg aan

Some classic tracks, but others have dated a bit

24. Cada hora é chinesa. Água mole em testa dura. Ping. Pong. Bola na rede. Ping. Pong. Goela com sede. Pongpingpingpingpingpongbloop. Um alicate resolve a fuga. MotA: Lazy Sunday "I'm happy just to be with you"

Nice early psychedelic sounds. Very Bri' ish.

it was ok.

Weird. Very weird. But fun also.

Weird album but I kinda liked the jams

A bit of a strange album, but the music is pretty decent.

There are some cool guitar sounds happening, and I like how scrappy and raw this sounds, but otherwise this is just fine.

This trippy Rock album was fun to listen to.

I could really do without the storytelling parts on Happiness Stan, but liked this way better than the Faces album.

First side: well, that's pretty interesting and proggy. Second side: What the ... ?

Bit same-ish

There was no shortage of good psychedelic albums emerging from England in 1967-1968, but Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake is special even within their ranks. The Small Faces had already shown a surprising adaptability to psychedelia with the single "Itchycoo Park" and much of their other 1967 output, but Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake pretty much ripped the envelope.

Ogden's Nut Gone Flake seems like a rare case of an album that feels so essential and influential, but somehow never really comes together for me. Some great tracks, and the narration is original, and while I've seen it done on other records since, definitely has a purpose here. I appreciate the experimentation and a few of the stand-out tracks. Fav Tracks: Afterglow and Son of a Baker. Rating 3/5

A super fun psychedelic journey from start to finish. I just wish the production on this thing wasn’t so rough, it really does the album a huge disservice in my opinion.

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake, Afterglow, Rollin' Over Cutting Edge: Rene Overall Notes: Gets a little too kooky for its own good for the second half, but the first half is good unpredictable psychedelic rock (especially Afterglow). The second half is not terribly listenable though because of the gobbledygook voiceovers so idk how this could be one of the best british albums of all time. Bumass brits.

Pretty good like it Hard to follow the cockney storytelling

So so album. Some good stuff but, overall, just okay

I'm not really familiar with mod music outside of early Who albums. This was good listen and probably deserves a second and third closer listen while checking out the lyrics.

Más cercano al pop que al rock para finales de los 70. Sensación de haber escuchado ese tipo de música y ritmos en otros grupos. Los considero poco innovadores. Locuciones en medio de las canciones.

The first songs are pretty common, nothing special. The second part gave me a "Lord of the Rings" vibe that was very cool and justified a good rating for this album. I probably will not listen to it again anymore, but it was a good experience.

It’s aggressively ok. I see where modern acts have taken inspiration from this. It falls into that category of important for providing inspiration for later acts who’ve expanded and iterated on this to deliver something better. So it’s important but after hearing the better stuff based on this work you find yourself not wanting to listen to this anymore. It has a lot of flavors I should like but just find it ok. It makes me want to listen to MGMT.

Pretty trippy and not really my cup of tea. Huge volume of songs, with the second half being an unusual story. Became just background music and surprising this was so highly ranked.

Interesante.

With this one you clearly need context, the aim could not be so easy to get... there is one review that says its Pink Floyd meets Monty Python. I laughed hard with that. Although it’s true, to me it’s not that bad

interesting UK group. might be worth a revisit.

I liked it. Fun goofy little album

I like the psychedelic sounds they incorporated into the songs

Nice, quirky little album. Cool that the guys are from Liverpool

Not really my jam

Meh. S’okay. A little weird.

Typical 60's British rock. Sounds like the Beatles. Fun though. More trippy/exciting than others. I'd probably listen again.

Very eccentric album. There is some interesting story being told in between the songs(admittedly, I don't understand some of it but it is a neat way to portray an album) the songs themselves are pretty good. Nice light/folk-y rock/psychedelic rock. It was an enjoyable listen and the story that came in between the songs was weird but fun.

Definitely an unusual album with a bit of spoken word. Sounds like it came from the 1960s, so it sounds very period. Being unfamiliar with Small Faces, I didn’t know any of the songs, but my three favorites were Rene, Afterglow, and Song of a Baker.

Ein typisches Psychedelic-Album, wie man es in den 60'ern so gemacht hat. Wenig störendes, ein paar ganz interessante harmonische Wendungen, die man noch mal studieren könnte. Gute 3 Sterne.

This album had some really cool, psychedelic songs! The title track could be straight from a Tame Impala record. Some of the later tracks weren't quite as good, but a fun listen for a band I never heard of.

Psychedelic rock

Pretty fun, catchy tunes. Sounds of the era. Last track (B-side) is epic.

Psychedelic, poppy, very whimsical. Not really a strong opinion on this one other than "it was fine". The skits in between were a little weird, but I didn't hate them. Favorite tracks: "HappyDaysToyTown", "Rollin' Over"

Quite an interesting record. The first song really captivated me, and I liked that the band decided to really tell a story throughout the album. However, towards the end, I wasn't into it sonically...as much anyway. 3.5.

2 half-albums. The first side is a stone classic; the second side is a spoken-word psych mess. Maybe there's good stuff in there, but it is hiding behind all the other fluff.

Very 60’s, a psychedelic attempt, whimsy with some rock edges. Not aged well.

A couple fun and catchy songs but quickly descended into chaos. Had to knock it down to a 2 after that 19 minute children’s song. Shame because it was actually seeming kind of promising.

Not very interesting, lots of talking

This album is not bad but painfully British like damn this is real beans on toast ass music.

it started out okay i guess but it was too much by the end. very annoying

Campy, 60’s psychedelic kind of, but also sort of irritating.

One interesting song and an awful lot of piffle.

I did not enjoy this.

Olipa melkosta erikoisuutta. Kanavilla kikkailua, joka oli vähä jopa jännää kun autossa kuunteli. Ehkä joskus kokeilen tätä luurien kautta, jospa se voisi avata musaa hitusen enemmän.

A little strange, but okay

Wow but not in a good way.

I just didn't get it.

I fear there might be too few rock, prog and psych albums from the 60 and 70s on this list! Only perhaps 200/300 of the 1001. Geographical imperfections side, this was a rollicking romp. I was liking it a lot. Pop, psych and style. And then, side 2... What in the fresh hell is this? It's exactly what I dislike about early prog, the rambling nonsense, crap story telling and whimsical warbling.

This is good and I don’t hate it. I don’t know if I’d seek it out again. This seems monotonous now. There is probably a joke here that was funny at the time and it’s now lost to time.

The most important thing this 1001 albums project has done for me is to demytholigoze the 60s.

if this list wasn’t overflowing with crap from the late 60s i might’ve enjoyed this more, but i’m so so so tired of anything and everything that sounds like this

Not my style. ★★

better than The Wall. too annoyed by classic rock musical theatre to consider giving this 3 stars.

I have heard enough English concept albums for many lifetimes. I am also downgrading yesterday’s review of The Wall to a 2

eigenlijk saai

A little too weird for psychedelic for me. I will stick with Pink Floyd when I want that style of music. These guys were about to become the faces though. The band that would launch one my favorites, Rod Stewart

There’s something trippy and cool here. Afterglow is definitely the best song. The singer just makes it too campy. Some good grooves on side B, but his delivery makes me feel like Tolkien is reading me a bed time story

This album feels like a social experiment

Little too goofy and whimsical. Some really cool sounds, especially for that time, and a unique experience, but the story through the back half is a bit tiresome. Favorite song was the version of The Journey without the yapping.

It's a good style of music. Thought 'Rene' was really good. Still, it seems like a somewhat self-indulgent exploration of Englishness. Didn't care for 'Lazy Sunday' or the second half of the album. I felt like their whimsy was trying too hard to be post-modernist while simultaneously staying within reach of plausible deniability. ("We trolled you! Ha! Ha!") Apparently this is a concept album. I don't think there was a lot of concept here.

I get that this had its moment, that it was somehow really important back then... but it’s just not for me; it’s the kind of album I wouldn’t mind never having heard 2/5 Because I wanted it to end, but, seriously, there are much worse albums on this list, so giving it a 1 would be an overreaction

Silly and not in a good way

Tin soldier, I liked but the rest was a bit dodgy.

It’s alright but the production is whack. It probably sounded good 50 years ago

This was going to get a 3 but what was all that talking during about. Not for me

I don't want Ogden's nut anywhere near my face.

strange as the title suggests. Essentially a document that describes a time way gone by. But reasonably forgotten since.

I already don't like interludes on hip hop albums, and they're even worse in other music genres. I'm getting real tired of '60s British bands that sound like shitty Beatles.

So many albums on here are lauded as masterpieces and I just don’t understand why. I love Lazy Sunday, but nothing else comes close to it. I like Afterglow and Steve Marriot’s voice is great, but nothing else really engages me.

This was the most aggressively British thing I've ever heard; holy SMOKES. Impossible to not picture Burt the chimney sweep while listening to this. Also, I refuse to believe this was only 38 minutes long.

alright

Ok. Another ok album to make sure I haven’t missed any ok albums before I die. Going down to 2 for the last Song.

Casi una obra de teatro…que teatrales pueden ser los ingleses

Beatles like rock, slow, not to much change from one song to another. Kinda repetitive.

I am a sucker for concept albums but this one just didn't hit for me.

The instrumental was really good. There are some kickass parts of some of the songs. But overall, the talking bits broke the momentum and got annoying. It’s so UK-centric that, to outsiders, it feels like listening to an inside joke you don’t quite understand.

Ok……. It’s decent music. Does the quality of it set it apart from much of the music of the era? Not to me, no.

As an album, it's okay; I liked the instrumental and the noisier stuff, but I couldn't really be bothered to follow the story/concept. I had an educational time whilst listening, though, learning all about Steve Marriott's childhood appearances in Oliver!, the band strops, Led Zep stealing Whole Lotta Love (and finally learning that Willie Dixon wrote it all along). So in other words, I wasn't concentrating on this album properly, let alone following all the fly stuff, but I was having a nice time learning new things. Thanks, 1001 :) (Always wondered, in the 80s, why Lazy Sunday was such an odd song. No-one told me it was part of a concept album 😆)

That was some goofy fun for my bike ride to work

Not terrible, just... unnecessary

Good start, weird remainder

When I read that this album was the last studio album by the band I got my hopes up. It was my dearest wish that this was an album so great the band broke up after realizing they would never reach these heights again. Sadly, it's not that.

Weird combination of genres. Not a fan of the result.

An interesting but not that interesting classic/60s psychedelic rock concept album. The songs we overall were bland and none stood out over the other. It felt generic (as a listener 60 years later).

The groove is cool, the lyrics are bit simple. This album is just ok.

Why do I want to hear these long ass generic 70s albums. How many are there?

Blimey! The whimsical gobblewock's gone widdershins with this insufferable noodlywank codswallop. Pretentious twaddle flibberflabber shite. Christ almighty.

Ok 2/5

An album of two halves, one better than the other and neither of them great. The first half has some ok tracks, notably Song of a Baker, and then there’s The-Kinks-annoying-younger-brother-does-Sunny-Afternoon of Lazy Sunday, which is a British staple. The second half has every British boomer’s favourite ‘comedy’ ‘genius’, Stanley Unwin, doing his bollocks wordplay alongside a juvenile pseudo prog fairytale. Shite. There’s some clear influence from Hendrix (the Hey Joe bass line makes an appearance, as does the Foxy Lady riff) but that’s not enough to save it.

Boring

They almost had something good with Mad John but then went and ruined it with the speaking parts. Very tiresome album.

I have so many questions for whoever's fault this is

An unsettling combination of The Phantom Tollbooth, A Clockwork Orange, and The Who's Tommy

I think this album looses some of its appeal when listening through Spotify (or other similar methods). The album starts out great, the first half (side) is some good, but mediocre, psychedelic rock. Then halfway through (where you’d flip the vinyl) it turns into a weird concept-rock-opera album, like Rocky Raccon by The Beatles but for half a record. It was a jarring change of pace/music and I’m not into it.

this was so odd - what was the deal with the fly

La última canción es bastante interesante, me gustó la experiencia. Pero el resto del álbum no me llamó especialmente la atención.

the album cover goes SO hard. giving it votes just for that. music is fine. its just background stuff for me, i hate how the older 60's music is remastered to include some instrumentals and vocals on one side and the rest on the other side. it drives me crazy. idk man they just sound like a beatles knockoff lol. did not care for the speaking parts of this album. their accents are great tho. song of a baker and lazy sunday were my favorite songs. 4/10

Before Rod Stewart was a household name and even before he joined a small indie group called Faces, there was the band that came before that with Small Faces. This album was originally meant to be this group's final release but has since been rectified due to the band reforming back together again in 1975. I do appreciate this album for the first half of its' 38 minute runtime having some meaningful and honestly very interesting Psychedelic Pop tracks, but man does Happiness Stan really hold down this project and make what originally came off as very thoughtful feel childish and accidental. If I am listening to an album like this I don't want to be bombarded with multiple monologuing sections breaking up my music, I want to hear the fucking music and not some whimsical Lord of the Rings rip-off by a group that I have never heard of before, okay? This project lowkey pissed me off because it ruined such a nice thing and for no reason other than "experimentation," like is it that hard to realize you have something good going for yourself and you don't need to throw it away with a made-up children's story to "spice up your album?" I am too frustrated to write any more here....

Es geht so.

It started very strongly with that first track, but quickly fell apart for me.

Bit silly, really. The ramblings of what's his name are just annoying. "Lazy Sunday" is fine, but even that is nothing special.

I didnt really enjoy this album much. It’s not bad it’s just not my taste in music. The theatrical parts of certain songs were cool to hear but other than that I didn’t really take any interest in these songs besides the first one. Fav song is Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, least fav is HappyDaysToyTown.

Nah that’s not for me

Yeah, what the fuck. Offensively British Hippies rambling something about a man in the woods with some psych rock interludes. 2.5/5

Wasn't promising from the album title. Wasn't promising from the album cover art. Wasn't promising upon listening. As I near the end of this project, the garbage I encounter on the project becomes more and more frustrating because it has become more and more evident how many very necessary albums were snubbed by this project so that albums like this British Beatles-wannabe nonsense could be included instead.

Started off strong with the first track, but lost me on the spoken parts.

Hmm. At first panicked seeing this was 2+ hours long then realized same album, various formats. I listened to Stereo version. The first few songs started out alright. In fact many of the songs on the album are interesting. And then the unnecessary messing around with the stereo effect kicks in; the narrative confusing; and the overall styling begins to feel a bit obnoxious. 2/5

Whogdens what do what? Listening to the whole album hurt here. Few good songs. As a whole album it’s insufferable hippie nonsense.

I didn't hate this album, and I thought the insane lyrics at the end were kind of fun, but I struggle to see how this album deserves to make this list.

Pretty annoying.

Favourite Songs: Ogden's Nut Gone Flake

Interesting I’ve never heard of this one 2.5

3/12 songs added I mean the instrumental is really nice but for certain songs I don't enjoy the pirate vibes

Not my thing and I want to keep my nuts

not for me

1968. Definitely a whacky trip of an album. Definitely has a place in music hx but it is very dated to its time.

2.0 (38:27. 12 tracks (two different genres), third studio, 1968) psychedelia (and Prog "fairy tale" Rock) OK I thought as I relistened to it in Stereo I had been too harsh at 2.0 but no same as first time the shit degrades fast with the Happiness Stan fairy tale concept stuff. The Small Faces have the chops to make a great album but the Prog Rock regression is just bad. The album starts a solid 3 but they are lucky near the end I didn't 1 them. I've never understood what happened to the Brits in late 60's that so much drug use and psychedelic rock was required so while walking with this Winnie-the-Pooh made up language non-sense (on the whole B side) I thought about what happened 20-30 years early to the youth of England and . . . oooooh epiphany 1940 was the height of German Lutfwaffle sooo fuck you Hitler - you fucked up so much shit. All this psychedelic music and return to childhood stuff is literally the kids wanting their youth back? At any rate people sometimes argue Prog Rock has all the elements necessary to create Punk (my genre) but yeah white flour, sugar, eggs, milk and butter (baking soda and flavoring) are all that are needed to make cake but I don't want to eat a bowl of flour or a bowl of any of them alone. The album highlights the weakness of the list that's it's just too England-centric. So many strong albums left off the list (especially 2000 - 2025) and too much British shit from the late 60's, as you're making room for new stuff start dumping some of this stuff as it's overrepresented

Loved some of it and kinda hated some of it too

im tired of this, grampa

It's OK. Al lot of the same old, same old

i will NOT judge if you like it. i quite liked the songs long agos and worlds apart, mad john and song of a baker, but the rest isn’t really mine.

Very '60s. Not my taste. Toy Dolls fans: original Lazy Sunday (Afternoon) can be found here.

This crosses the threshold into “incoherently British.” I liked the first few tracks fine enough, even though I couldn’t understand a single lyric - but the bubbles and squeak looney toons at the end completely lost me.
