Theeeeereee sheeeww goeeeees.
Average, nothing really stood out 2.75
Fun Brit rock/pop, guitar driven. Recognized "There She Goes"
It's nice. Well produced. Not really interesting to me genre wise so 3 stars is neutral
There She Goes is one of the greatest songs ever written. Nothing else here is remotely close but it’s a fine enough listen
This wasn't great but it wasn't bad at all.
"There She Goes" is fun
A one hit wonder
Solid
I can't believe I never found about this group since I have heard "There she goes again" a bunch of times. The album is a aight 3.6 roentgen not great not terrible.
I think there are other artist that I would prefer to listen to that do a similar style. Having said this, it's not bad, I just can imagine choosing to listen to it again
I hope this group is paid out the ass from royalties of There She Goes. More middy Britty rock (2.5/5)
It’s alright, all the songs besides “there she goes” is forgettable. It’s just kinda generic indie rock.
if the beatles and the smiths had a massive orgy this would be the outcome. fav songs: i cant sleep, timeless melody, way out, looking glass.
REM? REM inspired? Better than I expected. Not just a one hit wonder
Dece la
Was better than I was expecting. But the bar was pretty low.
One of the most lopsided albums I’ve ever listened to. The first four tracks are truly awful with Nickelodeon rocket power type vocals. Track 5 is meh. Then, on “Doledrums,” they start to cook. Somehow the band puts it together and the final six songs go hard, leaving you wondering what the fuck they were doing on the initial five tracks.
This was okay with the one hit song and then everything else was fine. Not exciting. Listenable.
Boring folky Brit-pop for the masses. I appreciate the short tracks. It would be a hard choice if forced to decide between watching Friends or listening to this album for an hour.
The three song run of There She Goes, Doledrum, and Feelin’ is good. The rest is a mix of listenable, but ultimately forgettable, tracks.
They have a bit of a Kinks or Monkees feel. There are a handful of catchy songs (I’m not a fan of the hit) and it would have been a more significant release 10+ years earlier, so I’m not sure why this would warrant a mention on 1001.
Didn't hate this album. There she goes is probably in every movie set in the 1990s, and feels like it belongs.
Sometimes I love it, sometimes meh.
Highlights: "I Can't Sleep," "There She Goes," "Feelin'," "Way Out" Strong entry for seminal 90s retro-60s pop rock, lighter and later than Stone Roses but with some really smart song structures and sold well by the gruff vocal delivery of some surprisingly agile, flutelike melodies. In that last quality, it's also a great and faithful synthesis of Stones and Beatles that makes their tropes sound fresh. Maybe the sequence could use revision, as the album loses energy and drags and dwindles in the final stretch.
quite good, a bit of variation over the album which was nice. I feel like the last few songs kind of repeated themselves a bit much for my liking though. overall pretty good.
1990s music I havent heard of?. hmm. They really are a throwback sound. is the time signature or beats different? A 60s brit/liverpool sound I read... but I didnt "bond" with it in the 90;s so this music doesnt speak to me. "there she goes" of course... (turns out I had heard that one). Yeah, it warms up as the album goes on. like a live show. form a musicology perspective it may have been super influential. but not on me.
nice but varied and sometimes too intense 6/10 fav songs: there she goes feeling I.O.U and I think knock me down mais jsplus
Pretty generic indie rock stuff
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. It's generic enough to the point where it feels familiar, but unique enough that it still feels fresh. Not the most adventurous album, but a solid release nonetheless.
Interesting transitional band from British 80s sounds to the 90s Brit Rock that blew up alongside US Grunge. Feels a bit more rooted in the 80s vibe but strikes me as a proto-90s Brit Rock band.
Another band that's like REM but not as good. Didn't hate it but probably won't listen again
3.5/5. Can imagine this record being all the rage during the height of Britpop but feels a bit forgettable now. There She Goes will forever be a banger though.
One hit wonder really. Was decent though
Pretty inoffensive jangly Britpop - could do with a trim, but some good tracks here amongst the dross.
I only recognized the one song- There she goes, and that song is classic. The rest of the album just was there kinda. Unmemorable to be honest. Not bad just like okay…
Mostly decent, though I understand why the band were unhappy with the production. This album contains both echoes of the Rolling Stones and strong hints of the Britpop explosion that was yet to come. It is listenable, but nothing special. That this was a major influence to the Gallaghers makes a lot of sense, and goes a long way to explain Oasis' mediocrity.
It's okay
More misses than hits
Even though I'm a fan of the La's who bought this album when it came out. I was shocked to see that it made the list of albums I *MUST* listen to before I die when The Cranberries, Yo La Tengo, and Love & Rockets all didn't make the list. The La's were good, not great & definitely not of the caliber of the Smiths or Stone Roses. 3/5
Very Solid Album with a few hits but with a fair bit of filler. 6/10
not my vibe
The one hit on this was not like the rest of the tunes.
The rest of the album is strangely eclectic and very different from their most famous song and the centrepiece of the album. Good, but not earth shattering.
s'aight I'm really running out of things to say
ok nota 3
I expected more from the band that made “There She Goes”, but most of the album was bland. None of the album was bad but none of it was that interesting except “There She Goes”.
Not my cup of tea.
oooh we've got some quirky 1990 alternative here! Never heard of them, so they'll be from the UK. Yep, what a surprise. I dunno, not that bad. Unremarkable but alright to hear once. Recognised one song. Predictably harmless but forgettable. 3/5.
Pretty 90s, but alright.
Not bad but nothing special
Meh. I’m sure they’re in someone’s all time top five favourite bands of the 90s but not mine.
Entertaining; some really good tracks, but nothing I need to hear again.
There She Goes is a hit. While I like the style (it felt like a blend of 80's synth pop and 90's butt rock), not much on this album stood out.
Enkele klassiekers enkele ontdekkingen wat leuwk seghhh
I liked it
its alright
7.5/10
Favourite song: There She Goes
Pretty good album, solid from start to finish, nothing spectacular, but good all the way through.
cool, couple of great tracks but a lot doesn’t really stick with you
3+
Mid-itis
Pleasant, with a couple of stand out tunes. Would make good background music for when I'm working.
I remember liking this more, but now it sounds like just one more of the many ok britpop albums on this list. There She Goes is of course good and one of my favorite songs about heroin but nothing else stood out to me.
2.5
not bad
94 / 1069 Got better in the middle, but I'm again wondering why this should be in the 1001…
It was probably one of the songs of all time.... idk could be fake
The La’s is a long list of repetitive songs that starts to test hardly the patience of the listener after the track 13. There are great songs like There she goes or Son of a Gun, but to me, a guy who typically enjoys jangle pop, there is not a lot to look for.
Enjoyable album that I did not have high hopes for going into it. That's the nice thing about this exercise though. Favorite track: Doledrum
This started off for me as the musical equivalent of beige. Innocuous. It added nothing to the musical spectrum and nothing to my pallette or experience. There is the ubiquitous “there she goes” which I hope Lee Mavers made a ton of money off. I don’t know if it’s the history of this record that gives it its gravitas. The story of a tortured genius for whom nothing was perfect. After the first five songs it did begin to grow on me. That Guitar on Doledrum was extremely atmospheric and redolent of the banjos in Deliverance. And then Freedom song really caught my attention and suckered me in. The songs are so short that if you’re not particularly enamoured of one, don’t worry, the next starts in two minutes. I know this album is important because it’s a precursor to Britpop and a one-off album that was the beginning of a whole new wave. But the influences are there for everyone to hear, and it would also deny the existence of bands like the Stone Roses or the Charlatans who were also foundations for the British 90s sound. Better than I thought it was going to be, but if Lee Mavers ain’t completely happy with it, then I might have to follow his lead.
It's probably not fair to invoke Oasis and Blur here — maybe that's just fine – but the Englishness emanating from this album is palpable, and The La's seem to be on an island of their own and in the same bucket as the aforementioned bands all at once. Thankfully, they swap all of Oasis' annoying bits with something like earnest retro-pop, though it's so natural, it doesn't ever feel or sound like an homage or consciously out-of-time, it somehow exists in the '60s and the '90s (and the 2020s) simultaneously, which is a neat trick. Apart from "There She Goes" — which somehow I just know, it was always there, I would never have been able to place when the song was actually released — I knew a couple of the other tracks, and there was a very likable quality to it all. It's absolutely better than a 3-star album, but I can't quite get to 4 on this one listen, despite all the nice things I've got to say about it. I think, ultimately, it's a tidy, pleasant listen, an easy 3.5, but I'm already on to the next thing.
Britpop before Britpop. True to it’s 60s roots, but still sounds like a product of the early 90s. Catchy enough in parts, and if you squint hard enough, Lee Mavers does a reasonable Michael Stipe impersonation.
There She Goes is an absolutely timeless tune. Nothing else on the album anywhere as good though.
It’s a good album of pretty top tier pop songs. Very catchy. Can’t really fault it as a pop album, but isn’t necessarily the most interesting. Tracks like Feelin really have a very mersey beat/Beatles sound. Which must have been kind of odd in 1990.
Fun Britpop. Lots of influences from The Who, especially Liberty Ship. Liked it as an album and a fun collection of songs but nothing much deeper. Would listen again :)
Was okay
Nice album, know only the big hit single the album was less trippy than I expected. You can hear it it same time as Happy Mondays/Stone Roses, prefer those though.
Power pop, not bad. The album with There She Goes.
I didn't know this band but it's right.
Let’s get it out of the way: “There She Goes” is one of the greatest pop songs ever written. Had the rest of the album been as good, I’m sure I would’ve heard this album earlier than this. Unfortunately it isn’t. I really love me some jangle rock and I was really into the first half, where especially the incredible backing vocals wowed me. It all seems to slip toward the end and I really don’t care for “I.O.U” and “Failure” at all. This isn’t bad; it’s just nowhere near as good as I’m sure it could have been.
Really enjoyed this one! Sort of poppy, alt-y rock. I was floored to hear “There She Goes” on here, had no idea this was their song. Wikipedia calls this one of the great “one album wonders,” and I could totally understand that. I really like what they did on here, there’s a great energy throughout. Quite delightful. Favorite tracks: There She Goes, Doledrum, Timeless Melody. Album art: Just a close up of an eye, and it’s black and white to boot. Nothing to write home about. 3.5/5
It was an alright listen 3*
It was fine I suppose.
This CD is kind of legendary among power-pop fans- a lone genius comes along, records one amazing album, then vanishes. And it’s fine, but I don’t think it lives up to the hype. For starters, relative to a lot of the best power pop, it’s very rough and poorly produced. The instrumental sound is kind of poor- echo-y drums, clipping bass, frazzled guitar. And the Las don’t use hardly any instruments outside of the core garage band kit- I can’t swear there’s any at all on here. The composition is also nothing to write home about, generally fairly simple stuff. And Mavers voice is fine but very nasally and lacking power (part of which is likely how he’s recorded). That’s a perfect use case for constant backing vocals, which for some reason are rare on here. Really the only this that elevates it above a mediocre garage band CD is “There She Goes”- that song is beautiful, and it corrects all the flaws I listed above. It has tremendous backing vocals, less nasally lead, great treble sound out of both the lead and rhythm guitar, and crystal-clear sound quality. I’m not totally sure how to average a 5 on “There She Goes” with a 1-2 on the remainder of the CD- but the simple fact of the matter is that as a full CD, it’s just Ok. They kind of catch their feet on side 2 with “Feelin” and “Doledrum”, but it’s kind of average overall.
They have quite the history. Can't believe they did more remakes on songs they already had rather than creating new music.
OK, not super amazing.
Fine 80s pop-rock. Not bad but not exceptional. Maybe if I grew up listening to this I’d like to more.
I actually kind of liked this. 3.5
3.5
fine
5/10. everyone likes There She Goes but this was painfully average,
6/10. It has there she goes on it. I think a couple of the earlier songs were okay too, but I've forgotten which one(s), which is a bad sign considering I've only had half an hour to do so.
Given that I only knew "There She Goes," this was a lot better than I thought.
Didn’t grab my attention but was some good background music.
Strangely never felt the need to hear (beyond the obvious single) and its kinda just as I thought it. Not much to get youtr teeth in. Some 60s vibes. Failure has a good grind. It's a classic 3.
It’s alright. Didn’t have strong feelings about this one. On the low end of a 3, probably.
As an indie kid starting my own journey of musical discovery in earnest in the early 90s, I was surrounded by people worshipping at the altar of this particular album, friends, the NME etc, it was hailed as a work of genius. Obviously, I'd heard the big single as everyone who was ever alive has heard that. I borrowed my brother's copy and eagerly stuck it on. Maybe it was the intensity of the hype that left me a bit disappointed. I've just never quite got it. It's a great 90s indie album, no doubt, Lee Mavers said it was "a pile of shit", the truth is surely somewhere in between. Feelin' is one of the better songs, but that just repurposes the riff from Paperback Writer without any attempt to hide the fact. Way Out is good. I'm not even sure what Freedom Song is, it's not good. Looking Glass is great. I just haven't latched onto why this warrants such high praise when compared to its contemporaries.
Nothing particularly good or bad here. Just a pleasant listen
I think this is the first album I've gotten of theirs, and I am unfamiliar with this band. Just as I type this while listening, "There She Goes" comes on and I instantly recognize it. Overall the music is ok, it held my attention but nothing stood out as excellent.
3.5/5 Easy going soft rock album. I enjoyed this one, the style of the songs stays the same but never bores. Not a great album, but for sure something I would like to listen to again. Favourite songs: - I can’t sleep - There she goes - I.O.U.
catchy and poppy. I don't hate it but I probably won't revisit
Some fun jangly, catchy stuff. It didn't really stick with me though
Very REM, very Hootie and the Blowfish. Nothing to write home about beyond the obvious hit
Meh. There she goes....!
There she goes again
I could see myself listening to this album from time to time in a certain mood. Not a timeless classic for me, but solid album if one is craving for some british pop
Meh.
Of course the one-hit is the star of this, but the other stuff wasn't half bad either. However, this is basically one of the seeds that helped grow britpop, and for that I don't know if I can forgive them.
Another catchy but kind of bland British rock group... These are really piling up
decent listen
Pretty solid album I liked the freedom song. It makes you feel like your in a pub on the east coast in the 1970s. A lot of the songs sounded like the same thing and they only switched it up a few times.
This album was a weird one for me. Obviously there is an influence of an album that can be seen while looking at it, and it's obvious what this album did for this sort of rock going into the 90's. Bands such as Oasis are obviously inspired by this, and I could see why at the time this would be something big. The issue comes in to the fact that it doesn't change that I'm just not a fan of this album, or really this style of music. I mean, I enjoy some good jangle pop, but the singer's voice sometimes can go from just a little weird but okay sounding to very whiney (which ironically is a complaint I have for Oasis as well), and it makes a lot of the songs feel very repetitive. I'm not saying the songs all sound similar, because they don't, but it does start to blend together. I was honestly ready to give this a two star rating, purely pushing it up a little because of it's influence and "There She Goes", but I will push it right over to three stars purely due to the final song, "Looking Glass". I'm a sucker for long songs that get more and more frantic or "stressful" as the song goes on (see "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" by the Beatles), and this one stratched that itch pretty well.
Sound it like a modern day Beatles.
And I now know where “There She Goes” came from! Enjoyable set of tunes.
Catchy. I almost gave this a 4, but didn't think I'd listen again.
I have no idea what this was until I came to "There She Goes" which also didn't happen to sound like any of the other songs. With that said though it was a fun album.
I am immediately intriuged. Oh its the There She Goes band. This was good but i don't know that I liked it enough to relisten.
If this was released in 2000, it wouldn't be on the list. They got there first though. There she goes
The album that inspired a generation of scallies to pick up guitars. An album with a lot to answer for. The '90s Britain would have sounded very different without the influence of this album, it would definitely have sounded a lot less like the '60s.
I really enjoyed There She Goes. This album reminds me of the songs they play at the end of coming of age movies.
pretty good
Nothing to blow your mind here but pretty enjoyable.
I knew of "There She Goes" of course, but never thought about this band in the slightest, ever. I guess that's Brit-Pop for ya. It's fine, but just "there".
It’s not bad.
3⭐️ Was looking good for 4 but fell apart at the end. Must be a Liverpool thing. Have also struggled to do much of note since 1990 lol 👍🏾
p638. 1990. 3 stars The bastard love children of The Byrds and Love. Lots of jangly guitars and OK tunes, but there's an overwhelming feeling that this was done by a late 60s B-list band, and the record company rejected the album. There She Goes is the only standout track. Well done of its kind but not outstanding.
first listen kinda sleepy
A new listen for me. Solid, enjoyable.
It was spotty to me. Some pretty good songs mixed with a couple meh ones. I never knee they wrote There She Goes so I done learnt today. I can see why people like it, it's really not a bad album, but its hard to see why anyone would rave about it.
Really nice surprise, good album from a band I’ve never heard from.
A very retro feel to this album. But aside from the lovely There She Goes and I Can't Sleep, nothing really stands out. It gets your foot tapping but largely unmemorable
Kind of predictable early 90s brit-pop. Some good tunes and very listenable but overall nothing to grab my attention.
Fiiine
Za's
I am going to burn in hell for saying this album and the La's are massively overrated. There are a few unbelievably great songs on here, "There She Goes" of course and "Timeless Melody" but most of the album sounds like sub par Hermins Hermits to my ears. I wonder if they would be as revered if they released more albums
If you gave me 100 guesses at the name of the band that did ‘There She Goes’ I never would have gotten it. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything else of theirs but this is way better than ‘one hit wonder’ material
I really enjoyed the album. Very nostalgic for me. I was 10 when it was released. I knew 60% of the songs and the unfamiliar ones were good. The song When You Were Mine was written by Prince, which is pretty cool
I can see this growing on me a bit the more I listen to it, but there's not much that stands out here to me besides "There She Goes"
Great retro sound. This harks back to the Merseybeat 60's sound. Fresh, crisp and clear it's like a summer breeze. Weird I wrote that before I read the Wiki page! Still, like a lot of these airy songs there's no cutting edge so nothing to stay with you.
It definitely got better on the second listen so maybe it deserves a bit more time. There She Goes is such a standout.
Aside from "There She Goes" a song with multiple covers and surely a cherished track, the rest of the album is a solid experience, but nothing exhibits the staying power of the aforementioned. That does diminish the rest of the album, and perhaps unfairly. All in all, The La's is a band worth listening to and it should be counted as a shame that they were not able to continue.
Interesting that, while obviously commercial (and a commercial success), "there she goes" is probably the worst song on the album.
Bom.
I'm having a good time with this album today. I already knew "There She Goes" because it's one of the most recognizable one-hit wonders of all time. Truthfully, if I have the option I usually skip it when it comes on because it's just so played out for me. But there's some other good stuff here too. I'm not going to be a forever listener or fan from here on out, but I'm glad I spent some time with this album.
There She Goes stands out on this album. Like a big chunk of candy bar in a pint of ice cream. If the ice cream was pretty good local ice cream. I like to think that The La's are a really good local band that just happen to have recorded an album. They don't feel like a rockstar band. They're good and, most likely, fun to see live in a bar venue (not an arena). Just popular enough that they sell a few shirts to friends of family members. Not so popular that people bother you when you're sharing a beer with them at the end of the gig.
scouse indie that never made it round manchester
Fine background music
Funny, I know every word to There She Goes but never knew who performed it until now . Overall decent album
She’s so high above me and 90s jams
ehh allt i lagi
Sounds like its from an older time
Good!
Fine, really. Nothing special and you can see why they were a one-hit wonder, but really not as bad as the reviews page would suggest. Probably shouldn't really be on this list but I'm rating by personal enjoyment so this one gets a passing grade for being completely okay.
I was scared that it may be one hit album, but another songs were not bad at all, there she goes slaps hard, 3,5
Like the Lee mavers story and shame it wasn't up to his standard. Some of its forgettable tbf though
Two hit wonders… rest was just okay
Pleasant enough
Ik vind het wel lekkere pop-muziek. Het nummer "There She Goes" is de favoriet maar dat komt waarschijnlijk omdat ik dat nummer al ken. ***
The 1 hit is great. Didn’t love the rest.
Pretty good! Tailed off at the end. Some bangers.
Pretty good album, though it feels very dated. Might have been 8-9/10 in 1990, but in 2022 its more enjoyable as a relic of the early 90s than as a music album. Still, I can see why it is in this list, as it probably influenced quite a lot of later successful artists.
"There She Goes" is a good song, but I never even thought about who actually sang it. The rest of the album is easy to listen to, and enjoyable even if nothing stands out on it. I'm giving it a 3 because in all likelihood I'll never listen to it again. Just a bit too poppy for my tastes.
Love the song There She Goes. The rest of the album is ok.
There she goes again
Yu
Never heard of the band, cover communicates nothing, and the looong track list also betrays no theme or personality. The short opening song is intriguing enough and I am rather enjoying I Can't Sleep. To me the first few songs sound like if the Ramones and Tom Petty got together to start a band inspired by the Monkees. Unfancy rock and roll. Fine, good, but unexceptional. Ah, there it is. There She Goes. So I do know something by this band. Genuinely fantastic song. Possibly, maybe, a top 1000 song. But one song doesn't make a top 1000 album. The album rocks along from there quite nicely until Looking Glass, at which it grinds to a painful stop. The first 11 songs I'd give 4 stars but the whole thing only gets 3.
It's basically a British version of 5440, but then There She Goes comes out of nowhere in the middle. Pretty solid early 90s Alternative.
It's all about dated now and given how Cast didn't really go anywhere either it's a bit of a misplaced cult record
There She Goes and other songs by the band who did There She Goes
Surprised by how much I liked this one. Pleasant enough that I even listened to some of the demo tracks on the "deluxe" edition
90’s light rock radio staples, with some late 60’s British Invasion sounds in the deep cuts.
britpop in wording
Its good but its too, \"sounds like\" .. for me. Liked the song Looking glass.
Being a big Fleetwood Mac fan this is kinda giving me the same feel especially Son of a Gun it carries a simplicity and just works. I’ve said that a few times but that’s the thing with music sometimes keeping it simple works. And not really knowing any of The La’s music it’s a pleasant surprise listening to their music for the first time. Little disappointed by the second half of the album definitely let’s it done but does obtain a difference from other albums.
I only knew the La's from the song There She Goes. The album sounded okay, but will probably not listen again.
The album smelled a bit like Hollies mixed with Searchers, prompting the British press to call them "the greatest band in the universe". Rolling Stone magazine speaks of One Album Wonders.... Well,... (6/10) FT: There She Goes, Feelin'
I had high hopes for this album. But it was fairly lackluster
This is very hyped but it was fairly average
Sound heavily Beatles influenced but solid enough.
Got tired towards the end. Not very sure but There She Goes is certainly a spark in this album.
It's alright, nothing that really stands out.
It was okay. "There She Goes" is obviously a big hit, but the rest seemed kind of common for the era. Nothing stood out. But hey, okay isn't too shaby.
Second Listen. Still very enjoyable. There she goes is a perfect Alternative song. The rest of the album is still growing on me. Some of the songs have a modern 60's feel to them. So many great songs on this album. 3/5
Enjoyable and definitely a first. The only song I think I’d ever heard here before was There She Goes
It was okay, but not a repeat listen. Average alternative pop rock from the 90s. 2.5/5
Halvbra album. The La's är ena rejäla one hit wonders, med There She Goes. Bästa låt: There She Goes.
Started out really good but by the 5th song I was done.
A mixed bag of indie sounds, some still sounding fresh, others dated. Overall quite enjoyable and entertaining
not too memorable on a first listen but i’ll revisit
The first half grows in short bursts toward the familiar "There She Goes". Not quite unremarkable pop, but definitely past-worshipping for '90. On the other hand, a band that can move lithely through varied emotional terrain. The second half stretches a bit more, in the way debut albums tend to do - partially successful. But that eight-minute closer is, more than the hit, what makes this a curious album in retrospect. I suppose that's the way it goes: Sometimes you end on that note and then just fade.
nothing new for me listening this.
I thought I hadn't heard of the La's before but apparently I have. Timeless Melody! I know this from Pearl Jam bootlegs. I knew it was a cover but never bothered to look up the original. Great song. "There She Goes" - Again, I've heard this but never knew or looked up the author. I guess their biggest hit. Makes sense, feel like I remember this from various 90's rom-com type things. Overall, a pretty good record. It's a genre I enjoy so I'm probably biased. Not world shattering.
Pretty average, not very exciting.
There She Goes is pop perfection. Everything else on here was middle of the road. Definitely listenable, but I'm only returning back to that single.
Schön zu hören.
So this is the album that has "There She Goes" - good to know! The album as a whole is decent, but other than the well-known hit I already mentioned, I wouldn't say there's anything else on this album that really grabbed me.
Non very imaginative song writing, but a fun little listen 1-2 songs at a time. I almost didn't even listen to this because of "There She Goes": one of the most annoying songs I've heard. Knock Me Down and Son of a Gun were standouts on this album. I'm glad that I gave it a chance.
Scraped in at a 3 because of There She Goes
Wat is 'There she goes' toch een geweldig nummer!
The 90s indie pop sound in a nutshell
It's okay. Not really my type of music.
The album starts pretty strong with Son of a Gun into I can't sleep. There She Goes is a 90 movies classic bop.
Not a bad album for a style that's normally one that I'm not into. I was surprised to see that if came out back in 1990. It definitely sounds like it's from a little later in the 90s to me.
It was ok. My initial reaction was "I've never heard of this band" and then heard "There She Goes" and said, "Oh, I know this song." I enjoyed the album but don't think I'd go out of my way to listen again.
Pretty good, had never heard of them but clear how much influence this album had on Oasis and various other Brit bands from the 90s. Would relisten.
Very mediocre album
Interesting, nice to have in the background
Memorable scouse campfire songs
One hit wonder. Nothing memorable other than there she goes.
today I learned the name of the band that does There She Goes. I hope they at least got minorly wealthy off all of those 90s movies.
An album I'd always been aware of (a favourite of the 2 for £10 bargain bin at HMV), but never listened to - mainly because of their most (only?) famous song, "Here She Goes" which I must have ambiently heard hundreds of times from adverts and whatnot. It's a great song in isolation, but it can only be taken so many times. To my surprise, the majority of the album is much more muscular than "Here She Goes" and has a clear connection with the old Merseybeat and British Invasion style bands from the 60s - almost power pop. I even checked out some of the BBC live sets they made after reading about Lee Mavers' dislike for the album recordings and preferred these in some ways, a sharper and slightly more modern sound than the actual LP. It's influence on Britpop (a shameful mark on British musical history) is easy to hear, but it feels superior and better crafted than it's later counterparts. A solid 3.
Some songs were a little too country-twangy and the ending was a little bit stress inducing. Overall not enough energy, but not bad.
It feels very basic pop'y, I'm not a fan, but "There She Goes" bumps it up to a 3 haha.
I liked 'feelin', 'freedom', and, of course, 'there she goes'. 'there she goes' is such a banger, every time. The others were good.
meh
Can’t quite stretch to a four however a great album with some really strong songs
It has some nice songs around the half of the album and forth. Otherwise pretty forgettable.
3.2
Scouse indie. BT: Son of a Gun, There She Goes, Failure
Not bad
6/10
brought back some memories
Good catchy tunes. I could listen to this again.
3/5
Pleasantly jangly. 6/10
Un bon album rock des 90s. 3.25
Pop de los 90, sin mucha sustancia
Folk rock indie
Alt i alt helt greit. Straight 3.
I was going to slag this off initially, but I got into it more. Hard to say exactly HOW much I enjoyed it
Nice background music in the morning
There She Goes is amazing, though nothing else really comes that close on the album. It's all fine, but nothing very remarkable.
Was only familiar with 'There She Goes', middle of album was solid.
Bra, inte dåligt. Inte riktigt min smak dock. Inget sticker ut
🤷🏼♂️ erg rustig
There she goes, and other songs.
Good album. a good few songs on it
This is more music to me then the Beauty Boys. I know one song of the album of the La's. 'There She Goes' has not been a hit in the Netherlands. But it is aired some times on the radio. Although an eighties band they have a sixties sound. I could listen to it and to me this is reasonably nice music. But don't think I will especially look for it.
Enjoyable 'rooty' pop music similar to many va NB ds in the 69s. Enjoyable bopping to.
This one deserves another listen - I loved how fluidly this album moved through genres, and though they didn't always excite me there are definitely tracks worth returning to on this one
6,5
Fun. I've always loved There She Goes, but their other songs have a different sound to them. Cool, but I didn't make it through the whole deluxe album. Needed a break from his voice eventually.
Feels pretty unique. Like a more folksy kinks?? Nothing really jumped out, but I enjoyed it overall
I can smell the fish n’ chips and cigarette smoke through the 90’s angst and good times.
It’s ok. Waited ages for ‘There she goes’
Solid album quite poppy liked it
Everything you expect from The LA’s. Jingly, Jangly, guitars, catchy tunes and their monster hit. It’s not a stand out from the crowd album and most of it passes by in the background. Just inoffensive.
Pretty solid English punk. Couple standout tracks such as there she goes and timeless melody and way out.
Not too exciting
Whether you like this album or not is really born out of your feelings about the music it helped spawn. The lone album from Liverpudlians The La's is often accredited for influencing key Brit Pop acts like Oasis, with the same credibility and obsessive UK music press praise as the Stone Roses' self-titled album. Much like Oasis' early records, La's principle songwriter Lee Mavers was clearly very influenced by the british invasion and it shows in these very punchy numbers that land somewhere between straight forward and off-kiltered. I am slightly biased because I grew up loving British Invasion music as well as the Brit Pop movement of the 90s, but those influences aside It's such a northern record of its time and yet somehow completely out of step with the decade in which it was released. Easily accessible, jangly, and bit neurotic lyrically, it's one that holds a lot of its credibility well. Favorite tracks: There She Goes (almost a perfect song), IOU, Son of A Gun
Jangly. It's fun reading the Wikipedia page and learning the band disowned it because it didn't fit their "vision". Curious what that was. Kind of a pretty standard pop-rock record. Favorite tracks: "Timeless Melody", "Way Out"
therrre shee goes
1/5 Cool album. Standout Tracks: I Can't Sleep, Freedom Song
There she goes band. I’m really sucking at listening at these luckily it gives me time to listen at my own pace.
Ganska tamt. Poppigt och väldigt ospännande.
Generally uninspiring Another example of an album that seems to be on the list because of a killer track. It really can’t carry the whole album, and there’s some pretty ropey stuff on there, particularly towards the end of the second side. Not horrible, but I can’t imagine ever listening again
#432 / 1089 Heard before? ❌ Revisit? ❌ I had heard of the band, but not the music, except for 'There She Goes' obviously. Very R.E.M. sounding stuff, maybe with a bit more bite, which is a really good thing in my books. On the other hand there's some bits I associate with U2 and all that lame shit, which weighs heavy. It's not offensive, but it is quite... meaningless. Light 3, bending towards 2/5
Prima
One hit wonder.
Blah. One hit wonders, how did this make the list
Knew a few songs but don’t think I’d listen again
The La's one hit wonder. Why is this here
Meh. Forgettable except for the one obnoxious single. Enough with the Britpop already.
Just kind of boneless TBH. Not my jam, just a bit boring. Ended up becoming background music pretty quickly, and nothing ever jumped out to me. 2/5 stars.
ok, I guess, There She Goes is ok,
More like the Blah's.
One famous does not a bucket list album Make.
"There She Goes" is the only song that really appeals to me. A couple others started to be intriguing but didn't quite satisfy. I don't like the vocalist and the genre either, I guess I thought they said "there's no harm increasing your neighbor's lawn" I also liked "on this street for knowledge, you must eat your porridge" brilliant stuff
Hmmm don't know why this is listed here. Some nice tunes, but not really an album which listen as a whole. Only the longer Looking Glass builds up to something. 2/5
there she Goeess
mid
I generally am down with 90s alt rock but this album was just really dull. I’ve also heard There She Goes so many times in shows and movies that I can’t really approach it as a normal song so it can’t save this album
Oh man. Yet another album seemingly entered based on the strength of a single. It certainly does not sustain the record and it would seem like a flash of luck produced that one gem. The rest of it easily disappears into the morass of shiny, overly smoothed out college rock of the time.
I know a single song from this band, and that’s because of movies. If you had asked who the band was behind the song, I would have never guessed it. This album kind of showed me why this is. Outside of “There She Goes”, the rest of this album is bland and boring. I finally hit the stop button when the lead singer on another song sang “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”.... Like seriously dude, that childhood retort is what you came up with as lyrical content? Just a waste of a chunk of my morning.
This project really has a habit of finding a band or album that has like ONE good song and going "you need to listen to the whole album now" and then the album is just trash aside from the one song that everybody already knows
