Reviews (page 7 of 8)

Do you like the hit single "There She Goes"? Do you have 53 minutes of nothing else to do? Check it out. This album is a perfectly fine collection of British Folk-Rock songs, though they aren't breaking any ground vs acts from the 60s. One hit wonder's albums should be removed from this list.

Tirando aquela

2.5 There’s a couple good tunes, and obviously “There She Goes” is iconic, but this is mostly just a warmed over Rolling Stone impression that has no place on a list like this!

Good ideas not explored to their full potential.

4/10 1 banger

Why is this on this list?

Derivative bad, just too mediocre to justify its existence. This does not need to be on this list. My least favorite thing about this project is the clear bias towards mid-at-best 70s/80s/90s British rock. Unfortunately another Dexy’s situation. The La’s but no Discovery? 3.5/10

Beigest album to ever beige.

The Bla’s Feels like an REM album but perhaps more aimless and less cohesive. There’s a lot of filler, and it’s propped up by one huge single “there she goes”. I did like “failure” off the back half. ⭐️⭐️

there she gooooooes thhhereee sheee goooes

The single has stood the test of time, but, this band feels like a one-hit wonder. The single stands out so much more than the rest of the album.

Не вывожу целый альбом, отдельные синглы свое сыростью могут забрать

There she goes is not a song I expected to hear from this group. For album from 1990 that song sound like the most 1996 thing ever. Overall this was pretty ok. It definitely has a mid 90s sound probably produced in 89.

Die besseren Beatles mit einem bekannten Song.

You could tell me that this was early REM and I’d believe you. This could also be a Stones rip off. Which is a better selling point in my opinion. So this album gets put on here because of one song from a spree of 90’s and early 2000’s movies? Got it.

Pretty underwhelming britpop. The hit single everyone knows stands out as a completely different track compared to the rest of the album, like a pop hit was just inserted on this album. The most popular songs are the best, not much else worth revisiting. Top tracks: Timeless Melody, There She's Goes

It was alright, more brit pop rock type.

the amount of average english bands on here is mind boggling... it's so perfectly ok. not something you need to listen to before you die. 2.5

"There She Goes" is great. The rest is fine.

Unremarkable

not remarkable

The first half was better than the second. Really felt like the second half just dragged on and it kinda lost its way.

Nothing grabbed me on this one at all. Pretty boring generic Brit pop.

There She Goes hits me in the nostalgia but otherwise can't say this is my favorite album. Lead singer has kind of a whiny voice and it annoys me

I don’t understand the cultural significance of this record. Boring from the jump and never quite gets there.

We watched “So I Married an Axe Murderer” a few weeks ago, and it heavily features “There She Goes” across the length of the movie, so now I can only associate that song with establishing shots of San Francisco. I wonder if they wrote verses for the song and decided they weren’t strong enough for inclusion, or wrote a chorus and decided that was good enough to repeat for 2 minutes and change. Either way, it’s great. Nothing really stood out too much on the rest. The seven-minute closer was cool. 2.5

As much as I love "There She Goes," it can't carry the whole record. Another 80s British band with a good song, but an album that shouldn’t have made the list. 2.5⭐️

Frankly boring. There are too many albums on this list from this genre. 2/5

"There She Goes" is well-known, of course. The rest of the album is merely ok jangle-pop. Best song that isn't "There She Goes": "Looking Glass"

There She Goes and a bunch of derivative “meh”

2.5 - ok album

Mediocre 90s music that created a one hit wonder, no thanks.

Nothing special, pretty inoffensive. Honestly didn’t leave any kind of impression on me so I don’t really know what to say.

"There She Goes" might have been used in half the rom-com movie trailers of the 1990s, but I still don't think that warrants the entire albums inclusion on this list.

Definition of mediocre & forgettable. Does not belong on this list.

Anonymt. Og hittet trækker ned.

I didn’t mind this as much as some other crap on here but it’s still crap. I’m giving it a one star bump due to “There She Goes” because it was the go to 90s rom com song.

there's some good individual riffs, but they're just repeated over and over until they're run into the ground instead of being developed, and the whole thing is suffocated by incredibly flat vocals. every song somehow manages to overstay its welcome despite only rarely making it over two and a half minutes

Another British band from the 90s. One hit (that’s a pretty massive hit), then a bunch of cast offs. Nothing terrible but nothing that makes it 1001-worthy for sure.

Day773 - i dont think this makes the list without “there she goes” cause the rest of the album is kinda bland

Eh, not really into it.

Generic alt rock album. Standout song: There she goes

It was alright. The back half of the album was stronger than the front.

This sounds more vintage than it actually is- has something like the smiths mixed with the pogues (but in a good way), a simplicity to it. This is fine. It's not particularly outstanding or offensive, there she goes carries this hard. Jangliness is pleasant enough

Not bad but nothing out of the ordinary. I didn’t realize The Las wrote There she goes. I’ve always liked that song. There seems to be influences of REM in there. I can’t imagine wanting to Relisten to this but it’s not terrible.

First time listening to that album, it had a very REM vibe at the beginning. I also didn't know the name of the band who wrote, there she goes. Now I do!

I couldn’t wait for it to end

This album sounded like the band who did the Friends theme song decided to rip off REM a little bit. 2 stars

I’m as unmoved by this album as I was when I was 16. The ubiquitous There She Goes was a long time hit on “alternative” radio and was the bane of my existence when it was continuously featured on MTV’s 120 Minutes which was the outlet through which I found new music. When one of my friends, also regular 120 Minutes watchers, inevitably got the album, I gave it one listen and dismissed it. My reaction is much the same now.

Ok never mind I don’t like britpop anymore I did recognize There She Goes, and although it’s pleasant enough and definitely the best thing this album has going for it, even that gets boring pretty quick. It’s got the same problem as yesterday’s album where it’s not like it hurts to listen to but there’s just nothing going on in any of the songs. I understand that without this album a lot of turn of the century British music wouldn’t exist, but it’s just a whole lot of nothing. Vocals, instrumentation, lyrics, all just kinda there and nothing else. Maybe I’ll listen to it again in like a year after getting a ton more 90s British albums but definitely not at the top of my list

The songs are too samey and low energy to listen to. And when they do have one upbeat song, it also sounds bad. There are some sounds in there that get my attention, but I dont want to hear it again.

I mean... okay, but if they inspired the most overrated band ever (Oasis), then they don't deserve anything more than a 2.

I knew the big hit from this album, but would not have expected this album to be on this list. I get it as a pre-cursor to BritPop, but I don't think it really wowed me. I like Timeless Melody.

Eh. Boring British crap that fills this last unnecessarily. 4/10

Awful stuff. Heads need to be checked as to why this got on the list. 1.5/5. Raising to 2.

Was looking forward to this, but was left pretty disappointed. There she goes is by far the best track, the rest was nowt special at all. It's fine, but that's it. Wasn't aware this was their only album. There she goes aside, completely forgettable. 2.5

Apple Music said "you might also like, Supergrass, The Stone Roses, The Verve, The Charlatans..." haha lol. I think The La's are better than those bands for the most part, but still a confusing one-hit wonder to end up on the list.

what in the hell is this? Listen to "I Can't Sleep" and be serious. "There She Goes" is a good song, not a good album. Every single song sits in the same twee, shrill, short register. Except "Looking Glass". A drop of water in a musical desert. This was a slog. Nothing is being said or done here, and it's also not good at saying nothing A tiresome 2

Highlights: - There She Goes

I saw The La’s live once and they played There She Goes three times in the same set. Having just listened to their album, I can now see why - it’s their only song. The rest is just plodding skiffle and instantly forgettable.

gives me tom petty vibes

i was about to be annoyed that mostly bland college rock albums were making the list on the strength of one song, but then i discovered they're BRITISH and you know what that is notable how'd they learn to sound like that

There She Goes //

альбом не для меня, но мотивы песен неплохие. понравилось в looking glass постепенное ускорение ритма, вспомнился реквием по мечте. известная there she goes не зацепила вообще

Ok band. One hit wonder band.

To me I was disappointed, felt like I had high expectations but to me, after listening to a Beatles album the day before; it just sounds like a blatant rip off and trying modernize the sound. Some good tracks however

It’s okay.

This is a one-hit wonder. WTF? So I now understand that the listmakers are middle-aged Brit la's (see what I did there? What I did there is far more interesting than anything on this album) who had pretty mediocre taste in music while growing up in the late-'80s/early-'90s. That's it. That's the only magic. I still have a long way to go, but this might have to be the last album on the list in this category for the numbers to work out. Influence 1. Hits 4. Intangibles 1. Quality 3. Oh yeah, I remember that song. 2

Deux chansons sympas : There she goes (remix), I can’t sleep

The La’s? More like the Blah’s

Not as good as I remembered. There She Goes is still an amazing song, but the test of the album is rather confused. Some real 50s/60s i soired moments that really want to be The Kinks but fall well short.

Good if you want to see how old skiffle fits into britpop but aside from There She Goes it’s not revelatory otherwise.

This was fine. Everyone knows “There She Goes,” but I actually liked “I can’t sleep” more. Whole album had a little Stones and a little Byrds and was just fine.

The song about heroin is good, the other 11 songs sound like they’re trying to recreate the one hit.

2.1 There she goes is 5 stars, everything else is one.

You can tell I grew up in the 90s because I still think “There She Goes” is awesome. The rest is fine to annoying. 2/5

This album prompted a discussion of what this web page means when it says "brit pop". This is clearly not a brit pop album it's an indie rock album from England but brit pop it is not. I get that it was influential on brit pop but it was not that good. There was one song on here that I recognized but the rest was just meh.

2.5 - Meh

Started okay but dropped off quickly and faded into thin air. Inoffensive but it doesn't belong in the book.

Whiny British mid alt rock

Enjoyable but idk not notable enough for 3 stars

Sorta sounds like REM without any edge. Inoffensive but not what I would normally want to listen to.

Nothing really stood out to me on this album. Early 90s two stars

I've seen this album cover over the years, but never listened to it, nor do I remember anything about them from the time other than "There She Goes". The album has a lot of listens, so it was popular at one point. 480M listens for "There She Goes" is impressive, I always turn the channel when that tune comes on so I had no idea it was such a hit. From the first vocal of "Son Of A Gun" I was instantly turned off, below average voice that's not rock or pop oriented. The almost 60's vibe that permeates the album instantly makes it sound dated. It's no surprise to me they never had another hit. I was 6 songs in before I was ready to turn it off. Extremely average record. This is another one of those British inclusions that would never had made an American Top 1001. The author of this list has a soft spot for vanilla Manchester bands who lean towards a 1960's sound. Tell me I'm wrong. If you made it all the way to "All By Myself" you must have wondered how that ever got on any album, ever. 477M listens is impressive, but beyond that I got nothing from this weak ass release other than confirmation the T1001 was authored in England. One hit, albeit a big one, no influence, nothing groundbreaking, no staying power beyond the one single, zero influence that I'm aware of, flat boring vocals and average musicianship. 2 stars.

This one's fine, but aside from "There She Goes" there is not much I'm excited about. I don't think I would ever complain about listening to this album, but I doubt I would often go out of my way to listen to it.

Has some nostalgic power. Still it seemed like the high school memory for the masses.

'There She Goes' is the only bright spot on an otherwise forgettable album.

I'm not really into britpop

toooooo meh

I’m so tired of britpop

Not for me

I appreciate the harkening back to the British Invasion and contributing to the creation of Brit Pop, but at the end of the day I don’t find much to connect to here. “There She Goes” is obviously the teen movie anthem when the popular girl walks by, and is iconic - but everything else fails to capture my attention, no matter how much it jangles.

Sure. Why on the list though?

Generic af

This is definitely the case of an album being on the list because of one strong song. I'm sure you've never heard of The La's but I'm also sure you know the lyrics to their most popular song by heart. It's an ok song, but the rest of the album doesn't even hold up to ok. In a word, boring.

I feel like I should like this album due to it being popular in the UK. However, apart from ‘There She Goes’, none of the other songs hold up. Maybe ‘Timeless Melody’ at a push, but it isn’t great.

Pretty catchy pop, but there's not much beyond the stellar single There She Goes. Liked Songs Added Timeless Melody There She Goes

Poor jangly pop rock, annoying production.

This was a hard rate. There She Goes is immaculate. The rest of the album...

I wanted to like the Las more than I do, I really enjoyed the two main singles and didnt really enjoy anything else very much bar the final track, a high 2 for me

Maybe I'm just in a bad mood this morning, and I listened to this yesterday and didn't take any notes at the time, but this was totally forgettable. If I went with my typical normal rating, I might give it three stars, but I'm tired of albums that waste my time.

It's as the Beatles got back, wanted to make an album that's going to be hip with the kids, realized it wasn't going to work, and just split. Not nearly as deserving of the praise it's being given. There She Goes gives it a little bump in quality, but it quickly dips back down to huge mediocrity. Maybe even being downright disappointing, and bad. On the bright side, there isn't a follow up album, which is good.

It got better as the songs went on but this is super bland other than their popular song.

I obviously knew "There She Goes", but never actually knew who sang it so it was cool to learn the group who wrote that. Outside of that this album was bland. I don't need every song to be a carbon copy of that, but none of the other tracks came close to that track.

It's pretty fine. There are some parts of songs I like but ultimately it's all very samey and just fine.

There was something here at least, I can see why someone who likes this kind of music would be all over this. However, it really just didn't do anything special for my ears, even There She Goes.

A bunch of songs from some guys who grew up listening to the Beatles so the entire album sounds like the Beatles but not as good. Culturally irrelevant outside of being a one hit wonder. Does not belong on the list.

A 1989 album emulating 1960slop would normally be an auto-1⭐, but to their credit the instrumentation is solid enough to be engaging through most of this. Unfortunately that just makes it a bland experience -- whereas The Fall was so bad it makes me shudder anytime I think of Mark E. Smith, The La's existence will simply be forgotten in about two days.

Fuck. Now I have that song stuck in my head all day.

There She Goes is more like an anthem, it's simple with no verses and I guess very influential for Britpop. The album isn't my cup of tea and that one song stands out in an odd way. Not a fan of Freedom Song

The records that The La's emulate try to capture something vital of their moment with the technology available: they are modern and immediate. This record crams serviceable tunes into mum’s old miniskirt, anachronism as constipation.

This was fine. There She Goes slaps (even if I prefer the Sixpence None the Richer version) and it was largely enjoyable, although dragged a bit by the last 3-4 songs. Again not sure why this is 1001 Albums worthy - feels like more blah Britpop.

Another album that doesn't really strike me as anything all that impressive. Not sure why it's on this list. The most interesting thing about it for me was that it sounded more 60s than 80s/90s. Having listened to the Who's My Generation recently, I was surprised how similar they felt to me at times. I didn't really like either of them all that much, though. Nothing was really wrong with the album, so I'm not knocking it for being bad. It just seems like another album on here because of its one hit, which does not do enough to make it an important album for me. As a whole it was fine at best. Overall: 2.5/5

Bis auf den einen Hit so lala

Not a noteworthy album

The Plimsouls did it better

Eh, nothing to crazy. Only two good songs on here.

I heard Cast long before the La's. Cast are considered a second-rate Britpop band - they're fine, but not at the Oasis level - that I think the bassist from The La's went on to form. Everyone knew There She Goes, and I was told that the album was a hidden gem, with beautiful songwriting. I'd rather listen to Cast to be honest. It's just more of your meat and potatoes "I wish it was still the 60s" dullness.

Once again, another Britpop band that had a hit song gets their whole album on this list. There She Goes warrants a Star, but the rest is a ripoff of the Kinks.

It's whatever. There are other more notable rock bands and albums from this time period.

Enjoyed the music but not the vocals and lyrics. It would have been great if it were an instrumental album.

Not *that* bad, but yet another album that's on this list only because it's British and had one hit song in the 80s/90s

Yeah idk it's alright. I guess this was a little ahead of the britpop curve. Must've been influential or something to justify it's inclusion. Feelin' and Failures were pretty good. Obv There She Goes is a solid track. Other than that i didn't find much of it was interesting. On a side note, I saw these guys at the Rock En Seine fest in Paris in 2011 and their drummer didn't show up for some reason. They played as just a guitarist and bassist. The set was kind of a drag but props to them for carrying on with the show. Apparently that was one of their last live appearances

grand not great. 2.5

One hit wonder

There She Goes is a timeless romcom track. Singer has a unique voice. I Can't Sleep Timeless Melody *There She Goes Way Out Looking Glass Knock Me Down

Lower average among the whiny British bands.

Tiene un sonido tranquilo británico, incluso suena un poco como a vaqueros a veces. Pero s más que todo indie parecida a la banda "The Smiths" la canción que más me gusta es "There She Goes".

Struggle bus

definitely one of the rock albums of all time. could have went without hearing it before I die, tbh

Mostly just generic rock, nothing bad, but nothing too interesting either. Except for a couple. Freedom Song was pretty interesting. And the best was There She Goes. I didn't even know they sang it originally, I've only ever heard the Tatu version. Best song: There She Goes

Other than the song that everyone knows this was quite a boring album.

The best part of this was when it was over Spotify’s algorithm played Pulp. That’s Britpop I want to hear, but I wonder if it’s even on this list. This was another album I don’t understand why it made the cut. I suppose it sounded like generic late 60s Brit rock and whoever made this list has a massive thing for that.

Not sure why this is on the list of albums you need to hear before you die. It's totally forgettable.

One song does not make an album

“There She Goes” and the second to last song were the only ones I liked

Wasn’t a huge fan of this. Has the There She Goes single that was fine, and there was a bonus song at the end that had a nice crunchy lo-fi vibe to it, but overall not great.

Ok 2/5

Only really liked there she goes

Pre-listening thoughts: what a bizarre inclusion bro. Like who asked for this Post/during listening thoughts: wtf was this besides There She Goes????? It was the most basic ass 90s album ever. Poor man’s REM. Why the hell would anyone listen to this and say “yeah this needs to make the list above the Cranberries” fuck you Robert Dimery 4/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: There She Goes Least fav tracks: Freedom Song

It’s just ok. Pretty generic 90s alt pop. Only song I’ve heard before is There She Goes, which was overplayed and overhyped. This album has no cohesion between tracks. Some of the transitions are actually very jarring.

Mid brit shit again

Sounds like an 80's rock band except in 1990. Not bad, but unremarkable. There she Goes the standout. Also enjoy Feelin'

1990' and sounding like the Beatles, The Monkees, The Kinks, a couple of fair songs nothing outstanding for me on this album.

Found his voice grating after a while.

There is so much great music from the UK. Even with the author's UK bias, why is this on the list? Because it influenced arguably better bands in the 90s? I'm getting sick of Britpop pretty quickly. Yeah, I've heard There She Goes. It's good, not great. Everything else ranges from fades into the background to actively annoying.

As much as I love "There She Goes", the rest of the tracks don't do anything for me. The other tracks were decent at best. Those gritty, harsh vocals don't do it for me. Favourite Track(s): There She Goes Least Favourite Track(s): I Can't Sleep

no me gusto

I’m familiar with The La’s “There She Goes,” and I’ve seen this album cover countless times, but I’ve never listened to anything other than The La’s most famous song. These early nineties albums have been extremely hit-or-miss with me (hooray for Ride and The Cocteau Twins! Boo The Shamen and Happy Mondays), so this album will probably fall at one extreme end of the spectrum for me. If the rest of it is anything like “There She Goes,” The La’s will probably find themselves in the company of Ride in my book! Hmm, The La’s will be landing closer to Happy Mondays for me. As far as the positives of this album are concerned, “There She Goes” is an absolute delight. I’ve heard this song used in tons of shows and movies, but I’d never actually sat down and listened to it before. It’s an absolutely beautiful song, with some amazing guitar playing that was perfectly layered. The main melody is so simple, but so catchy. The falsetto vocals are incredible too, and they’re a perfect conduit for the lyrics to this song. “Song of a Gun” was good as well, although it was not in the same orbit as “There She Goes.” I liked the guitar playing and the clopping percussion sound, but as the opening track, the vocals were not what I expected, because they were nothing like the falsetto on “There She Goes.” I also enjoyed “Timeless Melody,” where the vocals were a bit reminiscent of Morrissey. The closing track, “Looking Glass” was very good too. It had a really unique and pleasant sound that I enjoyed, and I didn’t mind that it went on for close to eight minutes. As for the rest of the album, I found it to be pretty bland. The guitar playing was fine, but I didn’t find anything particularly noteworthy about the other eight songs on this album. “Freedom Song” was the only one that I thought was particularly bad though; its tempo, vocals, and guitar melody were all pretty unpleasant, and it stuck out like a sore thumb from the rest of the album. I didn’t think this was a bad album, but I didn’t think it met the qualifications of something I had to listen to before I die. It’s interesting as a bridge between The Smiths and Brit Pop, and it has one smash song, but other than that, it doesn’t bring a lot to the table.

mediocre

The La's maybe the perfect example of a one hit wonder. Overall a shitty album, with one song I recognise.

Just a bit boring. Wasn’t terrible. But I have no idea why it’s on this list. 2.25

A lot of the songs are quite similar. A bit of a jam, and I could see that if this was something you grew up listening to it would be fun. Overall the songs aren't very interesting or engaging. Except "There She Goes" which might be too engaging 😆

I thought this was fine but nothing really stood out to me other than There She Goes, which verged on irritating.

The contrast between The Song on this album and all the other songs is remarkable. But I’m scoring the album based on all of the songs, not just the one great one.

Apart from the big hit on this album there's really not much here if note. I also find the vocals to be a bit annoying. But it's listenable 5/10 Favourite: There She Goes Least Favourite: Failure

"There She Goes" makes me think of the Mike Myers movie "So I Married an Axe Murderer" whenever I hear it and that is not a good thing. Favorite track: Timeless Melody 2.5/5

Don’t really remember but it was slightly better than what I listened to yesterday.

"There She Goes" shows up, smiles, and then peaces out before the rest of the band even plugs in. The rest feels like a group of guys still workshopping their sound while the tape’s rolling. You could slap any early '90s alt band’s name on this and I wouldn’t blink. It’s jangly, it’s harmless, it’s forgettable. One song shines. The rest? Just background static in a thrift store. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - There She Goes - Feelin'

So these are the mother fuckers that I have to thank for Brit Pop!!!! Looking glass was cool.

I was wondering why the hell this album was on this list until I got to There She Goes. Instantly recognizable. Here's the murderer's row of soundtracks it's appeared on (I'm sure I'm not the only one who looked this up): The Parent Trap; Fever Pitch; Girl, Interrupted; Cold Case; The Adventures of Pete and Pete; Snow Day; So I Married an Axe Murderer; the pilot episode of Gilmore Girls Otherwise, a pretty boring album. There She Goes is kinda fun but not good enough to lift this above 2 stars.

This wasn’t completely unenjoyable but doesn’t have a clear identity. Opening track I thought we were in for something a little closer to REM. Some similarities musically, but the lyrics add nothing. There She Goes feels pretty out of place. For some reason had that song in my head at Tal Bachmann but he does She’s So High - another one on the Mount Rushmore of inoffensive 90s songs.

This one dragged on for me a good bit. Not very interesting. There She Goes is a good song, though.

fuck you easdfajsdhvvjsflivwleiv

Pretty dull album with the exception of There She Goes and Looking Glass is a really good closer.

Whatever. "There She Goes" is good, but it's not enough to justify this whole album being required listening.

I reckon I could have not listened to this before I died. It's an ok collection of Americana inspired pop rock but I don't get much of an album or artistic statement from it. Multiple songwriters? I bet they are one of those bands that hate their one big hit because they will feel they had more going on

Not may fav but ok.

I guess this inspired a lot of later Britpop bands, but otherwise it's a pretty straightforward album with lots of simple catchy guitar riffs. There She Goes was the best of the bunch but maybe that's just because I already know it.

Could only get half way through it. Being a 90’s rock junkie, this one didn’t click with me.

It was ok, but I guess I don’t really get why it made this list. Was it influential or something? It just seems like stereotypical 90’s radio pop. I have to do some more research. It was bad per se, but I don’t see what makes it special either.

The obvious vocal influences from Sting, Morrissey, and Michael Stipe is the first thing that jumps out at me. The hit single is interesting and there are some other bits of note. Did I need to listen to this album before my ultimate death? No. I would gladly take this album before anything on the bottom 20 of this list.

Pretty bland and forgettable, but "There She Goes" is a banger whoever sings it.

There she goes er stórgott og á skilið stjörnu. Hitt kom mér á óvart með því að vera óeftirminnilegt og næstum leiðinlegt á köflum. Nenni ekki öðru rennsli.

I wasn’t really moved by this album. It had some sparks of creativity, didn’t sound awful, but for the most part it seemed relatively basic. I.O.U might have been the best track, I don’t think I’d really revisit this one.

Meh, didn't love it. There She Goes is a great song but the rest of the album is pretty mediocre

Is it the “Lahs” or “L.A.’s”?

Not very interesting. The mid 1960's produced much better sounds and was appropriate for that time. Not so much this album.

More like the blahs. Pretty boring

C'était pas ouf, le rock alternatif mou typique des années 90s.

Started off real smooth then turned lame and boring real fast zzZZ/5

hey what's that band who did There She Goes Again sound like on a full album is a question I've never asked and will forget the answer to immediately but it wasn't that bad. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

“Hey Tiny, who’s playing tonight?” “Jolly Green Giant, and the Shitty Beatles?” “Shitty Beatles? Are they any good?” “They suck.”

I only knew their big hit, despite this being my era. Started off thinking this was better than I was expecting but the album is too long and I was willing it to end eventually. Too flabby without strong enough songs to get away with that.

A bit forgettable as an album. Some songs don't feel much different from the others. It's not bad, but I suppose you had to be there to like it and appreciate it for what it was. 2.5/5, but maybe because I don't get it

Oh no I was so disappointed in this one! I only knew There She Goes which is a classic song. But seems that was a one hit wonder. It seems so out of place on this album because the rest of it was so boring The La's - more like Poundland Oasis. There was potential here but they lack charisma. Shame!! 2 ⭐️

Someone else already made the "bla" joke, but it really fits well.

Han The La'rrys ihres Album zwei mal glost und mich hüt Morge doch nüm ad lieder chöne erinnere. Irgendwie ischs chli The La'ngwiilig gsi und han ned grad The La'une gha für The La'ds. Us besagte Gründ, und willi chli strengeri Bewertige mun geh nur zwei La's fürd The La La Boys, scusLa

the la's first album the la's also lala - oder sinds no meh la's wieviel la's sinds denn ezt? also ich find die la's so lala oder au chli langwilig, aber was halt bi mir immer es killer kriterium isch, isch natürlich dlängi vomene album und das album isch: A la la la la long A la la la la long long li long long long es klassisches coast-album für mich ich gseh mich imene auto hocke mit offenem verdeck dur 'merica fahre mitem wind wo dur min messy bowlcut streichlet (er isch au so blond gfärbt) irgendwenn chumi am strand ah, mis auto isch au am strand im sand parkiert und ich hocke den so ufd motorhuube druf und lueg chli de welle zue aber denn hani glese dasd la's vo de UK sind und den bini nüme druscho ob ich da scho fast zu amerikanisiert worde bin dur die website aber sie gsehnd wenigstens genau so us wienis mir vorgstellt han - doch no glück gha ich gibene drum so viel sterne wie la's wo canonically ih album und bandname vorchömed

Feelin’

This was just.....no good.

Who is this and why am I listening? Oh, I know that one song. Everything else kinda sucks

Me lembrou um pouco U2, e um rockzinho mais anos 80. É legal, mas nenhuma música me chamou a atenção. Mas gostei de Son Of A Gun, Way Out e Looking Glass

There she goes einfach n geiler Song, aber der Rest halt so typischer Brit-Pop. Hat sich für mich nich von der Masse abgehoben. Schwanke zwischen 2 und 3 Sternen :/

2.5 tops. Not as good as I was hoping. Generic and forgettable other than the one hit

These guys are like pre-Oasis Oasis. They are a bit ahead of their time but I have never liked them. Rating: 2

This is fine, I guess. There is just no way that this was one of only 1001 albums that I should have heard before I die.

It's not that there's anything bad about each song it's that aside from "There She Goes" nothing stands out and honestly they just blue together

Never wouldve imagined the album from which "There She Goes" came from sounded like....this

Tweed wannabe 60s pish

I was familiar with There She Goes, of course, but the rest was new. I read that this is considered proto-britpop. I concur, and thusly mark it with a low score. But for real, this is not great for me. I don't like jangle stuff in general, and I don't think late 80s/early 90s was when anyone should be calling back to the period they were. 2/5

It was alright. An okay album with one standout song. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again

Few bands or artists have found success in only releasing one album. Temple of the Dog, Lauryn Hill, Derek & the Dominos, and The Postal Service are the main ones I think of. Maybe Germs or the Sex Pistols if you are a punk person. After hearing this, a band who absolutely does not belong on that list is The La’s. This list is unfortunately plagued with a lot of blah. And this is the utter definition of blah. This came out early enough into the 90s that Britpop hadn’t really hit yet like it would a few years later. So what stands as potentially one of the genre’s first records or biggest points of inspiration, this sucks. I can’t tell if they are trying to sound as uninterested as possible on purpose, or if that’s just the result of having a complete lack of charisma. You could realistically pick four random English blokes off the streets of Liverpool and hand them instruments, and it would result in something equal to what I’m hearing here. Their lead singer even resembled the Gallagher twins a little bit. Not only does his voice just scream blasé and boring, but his lyrics fall into that same category of Britpop writing where it’s overly cryptic and metaphorical for no reason, considering they probably mean nothing. Each members performances also definitely leave something to be desired. They are very rudimentary. The first track basically has no rhythm section at all. Which I’m sure was a stylistic choice, but that doesn’t mean it was a good one. I just can’t get behind this at all. In what universe would I ever listen to this when, in the same year, Rust in Peace and Heaven or Las Vegas both came out? Thank god they never made another album, because there’s a good chance it could have ended up on this list, and I don’t know if I’d be able to stomach that. Rating: 4/10

frekar leiðinlegt breskt kassagítarsindí. mjög ofhæpað á sínum tíma.

Have mostly forgotten this and listened to Mothership Connection like three times today, but good! Always fun to stumble upon songs I've heard a billion times in movies.

Top 1001? aside from Feelin’ and There She Goes i thought it was dross

I just don't get it, I honestly don't. I'm admittedly not a fan of the jangly 90s sound, and the album was more diverse than I expected, but the songs just don't resonate with me (and aren't even that good)? I remain bemused.

Not the best album ever, not even a super entertaining listen. Some cool tracks, but nothing to write home about. Strick 2/5

One hit wonder band with a one hit wonder album that features their one hit. The rest of the music is ok, but the album's length further dilutes the enjoyment. 2.5/5

Offensively boring. Just 60 minutes of the same song. They do have the one hit, There She Goes, but it's lost in a sea of bland.

nothing about this really grabbed me. could i write poetry to this? n

One good song. The rest pedestrian

Ikke dårlig men heller ikke essentiel overhovedet. Generøs 2’er

There She Goes er et virkelig virkelig godt nummer! Hører helt sikkert til på en liste over de 1001 singler du skal høre før du dør! resten af pladen var lidt rodet, men ikke dårlig

One hit wonder album on the list? Is this maybe British? I was surprised when There She Goes started playing.. I liked the dirty sounding Failure a lot..

The Good: this album does contain a classic song in There She Goes The Bad: after she is gone, there really isn't a reason to stay around The Ugly: why do people keep expecting Liverpool to be the bedrock of good music???

This was mostly serviceable, poppy rock songs that were occasionally hamstrung by an inconsistent lead singer. He has weird nasally octave he hits that was really unpleasant to hear. The one track that was a supposed hit from this album didn't really impress me that much either, honestly the bonuses at the end were my favourite parts of this whole thing. Also, writing a song called 'Timeless Melody' and then just making a generic pop rock song is very funny Highlights Over (Live) I.O.U (Alternate Version)

i swear the mother fucker that wrote this book had the rfk brain worm

Every second day with this list I find myself asking: why this album? What about THIS specific album is soooo special that it went on the 1001 MUST LISTENS? Like it’s not terrible music, but I just can’t imagine anyone going out of their way to listen to this. It’s just a nothing record. I feel like I have nothing to say about it really. The only impression it left was of something that would be jammed between midnight oil and REM on a triple M midday bracket. It’s like if you asked ai to make safe radio rock. I just know there’s some Gen X loser who thinks this is the best album of all time which makes me sick. I stress again this isn’t bad or unlistenable. It’s just background noise. It’s on the radio in a shoe store when you’re buying new joggers for school. The only reason I’m not giving this album a 1 for basically being uninteresting white noise is because I did pick up my phone to see what song was on when Clean Prophet came on. The biggest crime here is this absolute non event taking up a slot that could have been filled by something more interesting.

This album is literally one thing: boring. The music on this album isn't necessarily bad or offensive, it's just boring. This might be the fault of my ADHD riddled, stimulant dependant, goonmaxxed brain that subsists on two hundred 6s videos a day to get just the right amount of fried dopamine receptors to make sure I'm unhappy enough to constantly think of killing myself but not so unhappy that I actually kill myself, but it is just so painfully generic. Not one song stood out to me at all, I can't recall one lyric save for There She Goes, which is an average song at best that's been stamped into the brains of all through terrible romcoms of the 90s and early 00s (don't get me wrong, I love a fucking terrible romcom, but the soundtrack often leaves much to be desired). That's the issue, The La's are a one hit wonder, and the one hit off the album sounds nothing like the rest of the tracks. Honestly just about any song off this album by itself is fine, and mixed into a playlist it would be fine. However, being forced to listen to this album in one sitting is like being stuck on hold with some fucking shitty telco for 90m trying to get my NBN fixed. When There She Goes comes on, it's like when you're taken off hold for 30s while an Indian man with a heavy accent spits violently into his headset that is way too close to his mouth, asking me to restart my router again for him. It's better than being on hold, but still fucking annoying. And then back to sitting on hold for another 60 agonising minutes, and you know that cunt has actually taken his headset off and is having lunch or going for a piss and vape and that just makes you even more annoyed. Honestly, the fact that we both know that he isn't going to be able to fix my internet and this whole exercise is a waste of fucking time and he's just gonna get a technician to come out in 3 weeks to fix the issue is what really pisses me off. It's even worse when the internet just fucking fixes itself like 2 days later. Like wtf is this dogshit outfit. I usually switch to a different provider at that point and hope they have a good cheap deal. That said, internet seems to be getting more reliable here in Aus (atleast in my area) but I'm not sure if that's reflected everywhere. And even better, I've managed to palm off managing the internet to my housemate, so I don't have to deal with this bullshit anymore. Luckily we've actually just signed up to a new internet plan that (touch wood) has been great so far and has like an average 240Mbps download at all times which is waaayy more than we need, but is nice to have. Unfortunately my PC has been busted for a while due to a dead CPU (I think, it's throwing a bluescreen MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION error all the time just randomly and it's doing my head in to try and diagnose). See how boring that was to read? That's how I felt listening to this album. Perhaps the La's should've kept this one in the slums of liverpool. At least they had the common decency to stop after one album unlike some *cough The Police cough*

Nostalgia bait for millennial and gen x as it falls right on the edge of their respective music tastes Because of this one might expect the most insufferable album ever created. But in a cruel twist of fate its just the album a British hit single happened to be on. It's bland beyond understanding. The first couple tracks are okay but sound but don't really go anywhere interesting and when you think they're about to they just end. Beyond that you just get tired melodies and riffs and vocal flourishes that had fucking nothing but sounding like 50 alt rock singles you might hear in a shopping centre in the UK or a pig and whistle in Australia. This is the first album on this project I have genuinely experienced displeasure listening to. Looking glass is the only track on the album I might return to but even then it's hard to not imagine some skinny gen x with long hair and a soul patch biting his bottom lip and thrusting while he belts out the same chord on one of the few halfway decent songs on the album. This sing gave me a little hope before plunging itself back into a few more songs that aren't bad but go nowhere and then a few more songs that are bad and bland and also go nowhere. I can't sleep and Doledrum are also okay I guess. This album didn't need to be over an hour, what made you think you ate musically competent enough to demand someone's attention for longer than a standard 45 minutes. Entitled pricks. 4/10 Fav tracks - I can't sleep, There She Goes, Doledrum, Looking Glass Least Fav - The rest

The only reason I'm giving this album 2 stars is because There She Goes is a certified banger. The rest of the album is simply boring.

Starts quite good, ends with one of the worst four-track runs I've ever heard, features one of the worst songs ever committed to tape half way through. Not for me

the hit There She Goes is nice, but this album is otherwise aggressively forgettable.

Not much to say about this particular record - some decent enough Britpop from the early 90s, if a bit washed out and unmemorable at times. 'There She Goes' is an undeniable classic; melodically speaking, something about it sounds eerily contemporary. The occasional harmonies were enjoyable - but the general direction the majority of this album goes in comes off as sonically undefined - and not in a good way.

Reaching a point where this list is becoming a genuine challenge with the lack of range of albums

Pretty generic rock, absolutely lacking any hook or edge.

Oh wow, another obscure 90s British alt-rock album. Yippee. This is another one of those bands that has like one somewhat well known song and that's it. "There She Goes" is a solid song. It's not my favorite thing ever or anything, but it's not a bad song. The album as a whole is kind of mid though. I'll start with my biggest complaint. The singing is annoying. It just is and I can't explain why. At least the instrumental sound is fine. It's not great, but it isn't painful to listen to. The writing is whatever. It isn't particularly bad, but it doesn't interest me at all. That's basically what this album is. It's basically just a worse version of R.E.M., a group that has 4 albums on the list. Why does this need to be on the list? Does it really need to be on here? I don't think it does, mainly because of its low cultural impact and the fact that it doesn't do really anything that other albums from more iconic bands do better. 2/5.

At points bearable But mostly nauseating Poppy rock drivel

Fun blast from the past with There She Goes, but the rest of this album is a fairly forgettable. 90s british pop band. Its funny to me that we had a zillion beatles clones in the 60s, then 30 years later we got a zillion more. Don't you people get tired of hearing the same old song over and over again? It's a decent album, but nothing really stirred me. 2.5/5

Just ok

Light and poppy. Undistinguished.

Another absolute snooze fest. Boring and tepid, nothing remarkable about this album besides that one song 'there she goes' which really only triggers my PTSD for flashbacks of forcibly watching romcoms with the missus.

I'm unfamiliar... Its like the Monkeys and REM had a baby... but actually nothing like that at all. 80's sound minus the synth (hence REMish). OHHHHH There She Goes! I do know The La's! Some tracks are grating and painful, like Looking Glass (could have called it Shards of Glass) and the slow, ethereal All By Myself feels terribly out of place and amateur - like a 7th grader's poetry played to his older sister's forced harpsichord practice track. Giving an extra star for There She Goes but otherwise The La's don't seem like an album I need to listen to before I die.

Three tracks in, I'm really not into this. Brit rock that sounds like less-good REM (who I already am not a big fan of). Oh wow, There She Goes... never knew who did that song. Really stands out immediately for its single quality. Can't really take this one seriously given how much it was used in 90s romcom montages. Alright, this one just doesn't do it for me. 2 / 5

Some early Brit rock/pop. Had its moments but certainly not my cup of tea. Only song that stood out was There She Goes and that’s only because I’ve heard it before not because it’s good.

I didn’t know There She Goes was on this album! Incredible song! Doledrum was also good. Other songs were meh.

The vocalist sounds like someone singing bad on purpose.

There She Goes is such a classic jingly jangly happy song. I've always been disappointed by the rest of The La's output and this album backed that up. One good song doesn't make an album.

another forgettable rock album with one iconic song on it and a ton of mid

there she goes ! I was very bored, would have liked this in 2013

i found this album tedious and unremarkable. the songs all sound exactly the same (just a soupy 90s shoegazy alt rock) except the breakout single and the worst song on here, All By Myself. while I'm glad they happened to luck into a big hit, I'm even happier that they only chose to release one album. favorites: there she goes, feelin'

Wait the sixpence version was a cover?!?! Regardless give me more Gilmore Girls music.

Repetitive

was going to give it a 1 but "there she goes" is on here so it gets bumped up

Not bad, but not terribly interesting, either. The story of this band is more interesting.

A star for each song I actually enjoyed.

I was going to write a diatribe about apostrophe use. However, the La's is allegedly short for 'the Lads' (which seems unlikely), or so people know how to pronounce it (which is still grammatically incorrect, but fair enough). As it turns out, the bad grammar is far from the worst thing about this record. I was expecting some excellent indie pop, but it seems 'There She Goes' is a beacon of good amongst a see of poor to meh songs. Rating: 1.5/5 Playlist track: There She Goes Date listened: 29/03/24

Very sixties inspired, all tracks are much of a muchness

I wanted to like this album, I thought the first song was fairly decent and had some R.E.M. vibes. Sadly, I feel like every song got just a little bit worse as the album went on.

Generic. Maybe Lee was right.

i love “there she goes,” but the rest of the album is very disappointing.

wow that one song is so much better than everything else on this record

The hit single is really strong but that's really the only thing of note

There’s a couple decent songs, and I can see how this probably influenced the Britpop bands. I certainly don’t think I needed to hear this before I die, though. Best song: There She Goes

This started off as a mediocre at best entry into the 2010s indie pop scene and then a song I actually recognized that's completely terrible came on which definitely drop this album down a bit. Unfortunately just borderline enjoyable

Imagine an ENTIRE album with 12 songs as glorious and beautiful as "There She Goes" - would easily be in the Top 100 albums ever. Unfortunately this album only has 1 song that good.

Kind of boring.

Favorite tracks: there she goes & looking glass

It started out strong, like I would have listened to this for sure in 1990, but after their one hit it just sucked.

This reminding of the smiths and I don't like it because I don't exactly like the smiths styles it's so weird and feels like a mess after a few songs I don't think I can go further anymore I apologize.

not bad but a bit boring

First song and not a good start. I like the way he says run. Wasn't the vibe and unexpectedly slow. Second is Slightly better, drums and guitar are actually doing their job, they(or he idk) have a different way of singing, like that. It's not enough for me, I need more of this song, and it just ended ehh. Weirdly good start of the 3rd song. The guitar is different and love that. Also I didn't see any type of chorus until this song, and not even here it is clear, just permanent wave. Nice instrumental break, best part I suppose. Low key boring, also his voice sounds too basic. Weird lyrical start of 4th song. Not the vibe here. Guitar sucks. I hear whistles. He said "slave" a lot. It's repetitive at the end as if it wasn't before. This is worse than Bob Marley, because at least Bob was unique in his way. 5th song is their best song as I remember, and it does start pop-py, kind of love it. Nothing dramatically different. 3th one was better than this come onn. Not bad just not enough 6th song not bad, liking the background vibe. 7tb song is quite basic nothing much. 8th song same fucking shit(I'm sleepy and this is better worse and worse) 8th song has different way of instruments and it sang uniquely too. 9th song is very slow but at the end it has a beat I already love. It's monotonous but this is my fav song here. 10th song is not lazy but basic AF. 11th song is slow but it has that interesting melancholic beat which makes me sad. Also it was progressive I think, liked that. 12th song has Celine Dion song's title. the most boring one but also would be good when I'm down. Quite short 13th song is. Basiiic. 14th song I'm tired and this is not giving me smth to say good. 15th is a live version. Naah nothing much just nice noises they made. 16th song is also nothing to me, another upbeat whohoo song eh. Anyway 2 star I guess, I slept on it accidentally (then listened again) and I'm not fond of it, it's the first album I rated so short and dumbly, excuse me. It really is nothing to me, that's it.

Moarf 2/5

"why do I know this band? Why do I know this band? Ah there it is.

There She Goes. Truly a diamond in the rough

Generic dad rock

Gear: Meze 109 Pro Mische: flach und unaufdringlich Mugge: "There She Goes" ist nett - der Rest langweilt zunehmend Wertung: 2/5

Som bem agradável no início, lembra REM, mas as demais são bem chatinhas

THERE SHE GOOOOOOOOES

Nothing new here that I haven’t heard in at least 10 other albums in this list. Not bad music, just bland.

Not really my style. Kind of boring to me.

the only reason this album made the list is because of 'there she goes'

Sounds like a 90’s band playing 60’s music.

If i'd bought this on the strength of "There She Goes" I'd be terribly disappointed

The one hit song was good the rest was just ok.

I really, really love the hit. Pure 90s. The rest is meh

There She Goes was on so many soundtracks. Would have loved this in the 90’s but doesn’t really hold up outside of that decade.

Disappointing. There She Goes is a classic but the rest doesn't come close. The songs that follow it are better than the songs that precede it but I wanted more.

One classic single aside, there's not loads to this really. They try out a few different genres (the venture towards reggae is a bit much for me!), nothing really groundbreaking apart from the overplayed single. 2/5.

Sometimes poppy and sometimes with feeling, but never soulful disposable music.

There She Goes is great...the rest is just okay. Surely there are 1,001 better albums than this one.

This is a mostly boring but serviceable soft rock album. "There She Goes" is a massive standout. I was shocked when it came on; its ethereal heights do not match the other songs, which seem to simply chug along.

Another I could do without
