Reviews (page 4 of 8)

The blurb from the book made me feel like this was kind of a 'come back' effort from Def Leppard following many struggles and setbacks. I think they totally nailed this. It sounds good and feels good and really captures the best of what this era offered. A pretty great record overall.

This album feels legit. Like a dude with a mullet, handlebars, denim sleeveless jacket and def Leppard t-shirt. This fuckin guy drives an I-roc z28 t-top, crushes beers and helps old ladies cross the street. Chicks love him and guys wanna be his bro. Fuck Mötley Crüe and Poison, those dicks can’t roll. Def Leppard sets the bar.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Armageddon it, Pour sone sugar on me, Animal

If you think of 80s music, this is the sound!

80’s pop metal, polished to a mirror shine. I think I have a copy of this, gifted to me as a part of my neighbour’s record collection. Kinda long album for a 1xLP. It’s a solid album, and I’m enjoying it more than expected. Concentration of hits is strong here - if I didn’t know better I’d have guessed this was a greatest hits compilation just based on the sheer number of songs I’ve heard on the radio before. Not every song is a keeper here though - Excitable seems like b-side territory. Standouts: Women, Rocket, Animal, Run Riot. 3.5

'80s metal! My genre! Def Leppard is such a departure in tone from other bands in the genre cuz of the slower beat, no doubt in part to Rick Allen's missing arm. This album is full of so many bangers I can't really pick any that stand out. This and Pyromania are quintessential albums of the genre by this band.

Very poppy, but certainly likable

I'm biased but I love 80s music. Just absolutely over the top but still singalongable to this day.

VIBING. yes. This production is fabulous. POUR SOME SUUUGAR ON MEEEH. Why am i enjoying music made before my bedtime who am i Only real negative criticism so far is that it starts to lose me in the second half, its unbelievably consistent and thats amazing but i really wish it elaborated a little more, broke the boundaries of an already great album to make it even better. But alas, this album really is fantastic. The verdict: I understand.

Album is class. Would revisit! Not completely my cup of Tea, but songs are timeless :) highlights: love bites, armageddon it

This is a pretty legendary album. A lot of these songs are still played at sporting events etc. Not really my mainline music, but still clearly a part of my childhood.

Got to hand it to the drummer he never gave up when life gave them lemons they made some pretty sweet lemonade, I can see the teased blonde hair and unfathomed tight trouser bulges from here, would absolutely give a solid thumb up . Favourite tracks Rocket, Pour some sugar on me, Armageddon It

3/4 of a drummer but still able to produce some pretty big songs

This wasn't the Def Leppard album I might have preferred to hear today (that would be Pyromania), but I've got to give it them. This is really excellent. It's sharper and more polished than anything the band had done before. It's full of riffs, hooks and big, anthemic choruses. Sounds freaking great coming through a pair of headphones, or blasting out of your car speakers. It's a high water mark for 80s hard rock and just a lot of fun to listen to. Fave Songs: Hysteria, Animal, Love Bites, Rocket, Armageddon It, Women, Pour Some Sugar on Me

One of my very first cassette tapes.

It does the hair metal thing at the highest possible level musically. While not as catchy at every corner as some of the genres other singles the album as a whole is solidly made and so well produced it stands as a shining example.

It was a DAMN HOT night in New Orleans the night I got to see Journey and Def Leppard play the Superdome with D---, the cosmopolitan bartender from the FQ. He had scored tix because a girl and her ex-supermodel girlfriend had come into the bar and said they needed us to go with them-- because the one was *dating* one of the members of Def Leppard and the other just went through the big D. So there we were, Row 1 and Center for two bands I'd heard a million times. They played most of these songs. And we had a ton of fun. So now when I hear it, I revisit that absolutely wild and beautiful night that went back to the hotel with the band and then all the hot bars of the Quarter until the morning birds were singing. And those are just the parts we can talk about now. I'm worried I might've signed a late night NDA for the rest. Great band if you wanna party. And yes, I do have the photos to prove it!!!!! Ok this album... I mean awesome 80's right? It's the trash hot party dumpster fire anthems that fucking MADE the 80's. We're on a ski trip and slipping a flask of Jack onto the pow pow. We're outside the school dance and we're smoking clove cigarettes. We're sneaking out late at night to meet our girlfriends. It's the hot making out music from our oldest wildest nights that's now wired into the silicon of the hard drive whether it was any good or not. It's Friday at chapel and we're looking at the girls in their plaid kilts. It's Saturday and we're under the train bridge drinking Nattie Lights and breaking bottles... Thanks for all the nights that we kept on the DL (Def Leppard).

Funny enough, Pour Some Sugar On Me is the song I disliked the most. Regardless, this is super accessible glam metal and I can't really fault it too much.

I remember when my cousin gave me the Adrenalize when I was 13. It was a sonic experience: the harmonies and voices were delightful. However, I left Def Leppard in the high school vault. Listening to these songs brought good feelings. It is a solid album. It showcases the true essence of the band. Loved it!

Typical 80's rock sounds, did put me back onto Billy Idol and Motley Crue

Never really gave Def Leppard a chance. Thought it was lame, but that was actually a pretty good album

Just as inappropriate and sly-eyed as the day it was released, this is a great jam from some true bad boys of rock and roll.

pour some sugar on me is iconic

Great rock classics, some unexpected hits on this. Overall an entertaining album.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: I loved it, it’s just everything you could want from your typical ‘dad rock’ easy listening and great riffs and tremendous vocals Favourite song: Track 4 - Love Bites

Some real bangers on here, and the rest are still good.

Am I crazy?? I loved this. Absolutely loved it. All I could think was, am I supposed to not like this or something? Because on paper, I shouldn’t love it as much as I do. Plenty of the choruses and grungy “yeah”’s are so corny, the writing is so over-the-top pop anthemic, the guitar solos gratuitous. It’s like Thriller meets AC/DC meets We Will Rock You meets basement-pinball-tournament metal (complete with some early 8-bit pinball-sounding Fairlight samples). I should not like this! But I LOVED it. Something about it just works, in this super funny way where all these disparate pieces come together to form a whole. I think a lot of it is the genius of the songwriting. All of Def Leppard’s hooks are really four hooks crammed next to each other, with some death-defying way of getting from hook A to B to C to D. Almost atonal in its approach! Keeps you guessing. The songwriting is so gratuitous, but the skrelt-y metal vocals and vibrato guitar solos make things feel so silly and over-the-top that it feels theatrical. “Metal on ice.” The guitar work on some of the tracks is just unreal, like watching a high wire act. If there was only a third act with an ear break, maybe more downtempo, more complexity… if only! It would be an easy 5. As it is, an hour of just single after single tires you out. And it’s an hour! Too long. If it was, say, everything up to and including Gods of War, minus some of the more conventional AC/DC rips, I would be pretty much dead set on this. But it’s so close to perfect! I’m a convert and you’ll have to fight me. 4 stars!

Solid classic rock!

Solid 80s up beat pop rock

Classic album. I’ve already listened to this hundreds of times. Saw them on the tour supporting this album back in the late 1980s. My favorite song is Hysteria my least listened to song would be excitable or run riot. While all songs “fit” this album, those two are my least favorite. Great album that is a super quick listen because it is easy on the ears.

listen

80/100: This is a great album, it's always a blast listening to it; however, every time I listen to Def Leppard, I always come back to the same complaint. Why the hell is Def Leppard so goddamn horny. I suppose this was a trend amongst many 80's rock bands, but it really begs the question: why was it cool to sing about being desperately horny? Don't get me wrong, "Love Bites" and "Pour Some Sugar On Me" are both absolutely fantastic songs. The guitar riff during tghe chorus of "Love Bites" is one of my favorite riffs of all time. But, my god, both songs can basically be stripped down to "I'm horny I wanna fuck you so bad it'll feel so good" with really cool guitar riffs and drum fills in the background. It just feels awkward to listen to at times. I'm thankful music has moved away from this weird obsession with describing love through the lens of sexual intimacy, because, for me at least, it's incredibly off-putting. With that being said, this is still, musically, a very well put together album chock full of hits.

Rough as usual but energetic

Sure it's cliché, corny and dated... but goddamn it still rocks! 🤘

Never been a Def Leopard fan but everyone around me seems to have been. Never owned the shirt or a jean jacket with the back patch of the album cover...but I will be damned if I don't know pretty much every song on this album and that says something...

I have to say I'm unironically a Def Leppard fan now. This album wasn't as good as Pyromania, I thought it was a little too long, and honestly, "pour some sugar on me" felt like an odd duck in the middle of the album. Overall though, I really appreciate what they're going for. They were the top of their genre.

The hits (of which there are many) are fine, but the b-sides are what make this album worth listening to. Not a masterpiece album, but a great product of its time.

I really liked this album, it reminded me of my mom and experiences of listening to Pour Some Sugar on Me on the radio.

“And I want, and I need, and I list, animal” the play with words and how they sound is amazing. Love the fills and the call & response. The production elements for this album are top notch.

Well. I wasn’t thrilled when this popped up in the list, but god damnit, there are TONS of bangers on this bad boy

Solid rockin' fun!

This was not my jam when it was originally released. In the right mood, I could have some fun with it, but didn't love much of Def Leppard. Now, I find it much more fun...probably the nostalgia helping bump it up to the next level for me.

Minder 13 in een dozijn dan ik dacht, goed album.

Pretty good classics

Glam metal, rock, ochentero.

I had forgotten how much of this album I knew and how much of a triumph it was for it to come out. The album really rocks, and it isn't until you get to the second side do you get a clunker or two. I only have the album before it ("Pyromania") but this was a great follow-up. The electronic drumwork was a real technological breakthrough. Musicianship was great. I remember not being a fan of the vocals as much, there was a bit of the way Joe Elliott was singing on some of the songs bothered me, and I can't say what it was. But now I seem to be over it. Good stuff.

This is one of the first rock albums I remember as a kid, or other kids talking about - the full album, not just a song or two. I think I was 9 years old. For the next few years all air band skits included at least one group of kids doing Pour Some Sugar on Me or Rocket or Armageddon It, with everyone wanting to be the one armed drummer. Weird how music gets around and grows into something big. I will always prefer the more complicated style of 90's grunge and alternative to the try to please everybody style of 80's hair metal, but this was one of the finest versions of 80's drugs, sex, and rock and roll (and bubblegum). Only now do I know how much studio production was used to generate the sound; otherwise, I know it as an album full of massive hits. Sell outs or not, it is 7 songs before reaching a song that is just so-so. The first half is an awesome ride. Too bad they didn't just throw in Hysteria and call it a day as a 7-track album, because the second half is a bit soft. I mean, it rolls right along with the vibe, so fits nicely if you're listening cover to cover. But even I have to admit it's a lot of cheese and I don't know if you'd really care about most of the second half songs if you heard them one-off. I wanna give it a 5 because it's such a fun, rocking album but it gets downgraded to just under 4.5 for the cheese.

Just a good rock album, great guitar and vocals

Yeah, cool. Classic brit rock. The hairdos - classic. The sound - classic. The one-armed drummer - amazing. Some crackin' tunes in here. Stand out tracks: Pour Some Sugar On It, Love Bites, Hysteria.

80's hair metal at it's finest. Clean layering gives it a pop, glam feel. Standouts "Pour Some Sugar On Me", "Animal", "Women".

Glam rock-metal. Varios megahits. Un 4.

Not usually my thing but I looked quite a few songs on this album, especially "Love Bites" and "Armageddon it". Some parts of the album weren't for me personally, but I can recognise the appeal. Solid album

Lots of B-list bangers on this one Stadium rock is fun; love how big the sound is They figured out how to make the synth and guitar play nice with each other All the singles have a hook that slaps Vocal harmonies are so catchy Animal took 3 years to write; Pour Some Sugar on Me took 2 weeks Didn't Rick Allen have two arms on their last album?

Really enjoyed this album and I don’t really listen to rock. Really liked women, gods of war and hysteria

The front half of this album is incredible. Rocket - Animal - love bites -sugar is a ridiculous run of songs. 2nd half of the album is good but doesnt come close to the 1st half. How do they only have 6 million listeners on spotify??? GAS 8/10

Fun cock rock

Pours some suga on myself

All around fun album

The drummer from Def Leppard only has one arm. But, this album is an asskicking jam from start to finish

"Hysteria" is 100% rock anthems and power ballads and that's alright by me. It's a total radio-metal cheesefest and I don't even care. The cheese factor is mitigated by a saw-blade edge that's not present on earlier DL albums. That edge is led by Joe Elliot's vocals. He really hit his peak on Hysteria. The rest of the band follows suit and puts just a little more oomph into their work leading to a fist-pumping performance that almost makes you forget that the lyrics to EVERY SONG are utterly inane. I mean really stupid stuff. But here's the thing: it doesn't matter. It never did matter. Joe Elliot and his boys knew it didn't matter when they wrote the songs. All that mattered was that people would get amped when the songs came on the radio. So that's what they wrote: radio-metal rock anthems and innuendo-laden power ballads. And I don't even care. It's a blast.

Bitchin'. 4.5 stars

This was the first album I ever bought. Eight years old, WHSmith in Barnstaple. It terrified me (I was a sensitive kid). I rediscovered it about 12 years ago and appreciated it more. It's anthemic stadium rock delivered so slickly that you don't realise how moronic the whole endeavour is.

Big hair, big riffs, poppy choruses. According to Wikipedia this album upset Def Leppard purists which brings me joy and one extra star

Enjoyed it!

80s metal in a perfectly distilled package. I saw this tour, it was as glitzy and flashy and hairy as you can imagine. But this album absolutely rocks. Even manages to pull off the metal ballad, not always a sure thing at all.

Really good, but perhaps mostly nostalgia.

Good but not great.

As someone who likes rock, hard rock, and pop rock, this album was very easy to listen to, being a sort of combination of all three. None of the tracks really stood out (except for maybe "Pour Some Sugar On Me"), but everything sounded great. I can't see anyone disliking this music unless any of the above genres already don't appeal to them.

Great tunes and guitars.

One of my favorite Def Leppard albums. I don't love every song but there are so many anthems on this album. Animal, Love Bites, Pour Some Sugar, Armageddon It, Don't Shoot Shotgun. This may have been the album that made me a fan of them. Classic stadium rock of the 80's that you don't see much anymore.

A bona fide classic rock classic! The greatest band named after a big cat with hearing problems to feature a one-armed drummer. I know and love a lot of their classic hits, but not sure if I've truly listened to an album before. I really enjoyed this one, had a few hits I knew and plenty of songs new to me that I enjoyed as well. Despite obviously being a hard rock/'80s hair metal type band, they've got some excellent melodies on a lot of these deeper cuts. I wouldn't mind more from these guys, this one bangs. Favorite tracks: Pour Some Sugar on Me, Rocket, Animal, Armageddon It, Run Riot. Album art: Really fantastic cover, this one is a classic for me. Love anything retrofuturistic like this, and the colors really pop. 4.5/5

Мне нравится хард-рок. Музыка 80-ых. Сочетание классное, не ожидал :)

Nice to listen to at work - 80’s rock 👍🏻

I used to lump hair metal in with nu metal and pop punk for lame mainstream/pop styles of rock that I had no use for. And while there have been exceptions for all three, I’ve gravitated more towards glam metal towards the other two. There’s no pretension in most of these bands, just good times and solid hooks. That said, it took a while for me to get into Hysteria the album. I much preferred the Lep’s harder rocking earlier stuff, and while I still do, I dig most of this now. This is 80’s production excess at its highest caliber, and the levels Mutt Lange went to is insane. The title track is especially a favorite, probably their best song. I feel like Billy Corgan has spent his entire career trying to write a melody like this, but hasn’t come close. B

not my gender but a good album

Muy bueno

I really loved this album. Lots of nostalgia from grade school and even though I have heard Pour some sugar on me a million times I still think its a great 80s rock song. Animal is also a great track.

80s Poodle-hair rock, but at the better end of the spectrum. Marvellous.

80s classic

Back in the day I invented a subgenre for Def Leppard and Van Halen: they were walkman metal. I sensed that, having incorporated synths, they sounded great on tape and with headphones on. But so does Run DMC's Raising Hell. To this day I prefer listening to these albums on tape.  Ok, it's all too cheesy, but then again, that's the point and you know what you are in for.

Bop after bop. This album fucks. This album is your dad. Say hi to your mother for me.

Like the other Def Leppard album I got on this list, I'm honestly surprised by how good this is. It's not groundbreaking or anything, but it is an incredibly well-produced album with a lot of good songs. I never thought of Def Leppard as a hit factory, but just the number of songs that charted on this album alone is surprising, and Pyromania is similar. It's also wild that this album came out after their drummer lost his goddamned arm. Like, drummers famously use their arms quite frequently, and generally they prefer to have two of them. The drumming sounds great too, especially on Pour Some Sugar On Me. 4/5 Another surprisingly good album from Def Leppard

Really like the Def Leppard sound. This is my favorite album of theirs. Every song sounds like a single. 3.5/5

Origunal, quite hard, bit psychadelic

I can't believe how much I enjoyed this, firmly going on the guilty pleasure list.

Classic Rock royalty, exactly what you'd expect out of a rock album from the 80s

Actually quite enjoyed this one. Was a very accessible style of rock and would like to give it another listen

This was a tough one to rate. I really like a lot of the songs on this album, but there are others which just are very dull and a skip. I think overall the great songs overpower the filler tracks though. You have to be in the mood for this type of cheesy rock, if you are you'll be in for a ride.

listened to it all, didnt dislike any of it. Was in background tho lmao

pretty good, I’m a sucker for 80s rock 8/10

Great albums with a lot of awesome classics.

Bitchin'. I really dig it

-I like all the rock references in "Rocket" -"Run Riot," which had great drum-heavy parts, stood out -Obvioualy I've heard "Pour Some Sugar On Me" -The Wikipedia said every song was written as a potential single, and I can definitely hear that. Every song is very anthemic and independent. A solid collection of fun ahir metal tracks

Cheesy but fun!

4.5/5 nice one! Who would have thought!

This is a classic 80s rock album. I heard this a lot growing up through older family members loving it. Objectively, probably not a 5 star album, but all tracks are really really good and some catchy radio friendly tunes in there for good measure.

Genre not my cup of tea but easily listenable

Great stuff! I hadn't really given this band the time of day besides "Pour some sugar on me" the single but I enjoyed this. I don't know about listening to it all the time, it might be past it's time but it's nice to spend some time with it.

It was pretty fun, very much of its time.

Fantastic! Loved it

Quintessential 80s stadium rock. This album is full of sing-along classics and they get an extra star because the drummer has one arm

A pretty great album absolutely packed full of hits. Six recognized songs

I liked this more than expected. Great production. The title track is quite pleasant. One of the tracks had *all* of the production tricks and was a bit much.

Good stuff! I only listened to the first few though

Everything here works, even the vocal which should annoy me but doesn’t.

Sleazy and packed full of iconic riffs.

Not for me

It might be samey. The parts of the songs might not flow super well between each other at times. It is certainly so dated that I feel like my hair is starting to tease itself up in true 80's fashion. But my god if it ain't some of the most fun music out there.

Un bon album rock plein de clasiques. 4.5

I've associated Def Leppard with being stripper music for a while, and kind of assumed it was all just middle of the road AOR. However, I properly enjoyed this album. It's a but dated and probably pretty sexist, but the tracks are all decent and well written. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Fun, but all the songs are too long

classic kick ass rock and roll. a guilty pleasure!

Legendary album. Kind of holds up. Lots of songs with three words.

Sehr gutes Hard Rock Album

classic, but still 80s rock

An excellent example of 80s hair metal! Yes, it is cheesy and repetitive, but is it fun and holds a real sense of nostalgia for me, being an 80s baby.

Already had this album added to my library. Such a classic! So many greats songs, my favorite being the cliché “Pour Some Sugar on Me”. Something about it that isn’t necessarily a 5, but still very solid!

Lived it in late 80s as a child, still do now although I haven't listened to this in about 25 years!

This is some good rock, Pour Some Sugar on Me? Banger, if not a little strange to play in public but a good song.

This was actually great! Really good fun.

Nice album, full of energy and fun songs. Feels like something that should be enjoyed live.

leuke, opgewerkte rock.

Dit leunt dichter aan bij Pop dan bij Hardrock. Op een festivalweide zou ik hier enorm van genieten. Op album komt het net wat minder over

This was pretty good. Whole album is a fun listen.

The drummer from Def leopard only has one arm. But. I saw them at the Wolverhampton civic hall and they rocked hard. Were supported by the darkness too. This album is too slick and not hard rocking enough for 5*.

good fun

good album

Damn good

Very nice riffs

one extra star for nostalgia

A favourite from my childhood - great album

Man there are more hits on this album than I realized. Knew the songs but not the names. These were crazy hits at the time are are still essential party jams.

Loved it

amazing, I thoroughly enjoyed the 80s sound of this, really cool :D

Rockkk

En klassiker med många sönderspelade spår. En av lätt, effektiv lyrik och svängiga riffs.

Another rock album that hits the perfect spot (not too heavy, not too light). It's an hour long album with 5 mega hits and most of the other songs are almost equally good just not on the same level of popularity. There was like 1 song which I was meh about and that's impressive on an hour long album.

Really enjoyed this one, for all its cheesy hooks, big choruses, guitar riffs. Solid album in this genre.

Classic 70s/80s (harder) rock band.

Really solid classic rock

Recognize some of these songs. Great listen if in the mood for heavy metal.

Undeniably fun to listen to

Side one of this album is damn near untouchable. If they moved the title track to after "Gods of War" and then ended the album, it's a contender for 5 stars. But it's just too long, with few of the later songs not standing out too much. Overall though, very good.

Hyvä levy ja kuunteli mielellään alusta loppuun. Näitä on tullut aikoinaan pyöriteltyä veljen LP-soittimella.

If I had the power to delete one song from the world's consciousness and ensure it had never been made, Pour Some Sugar On Me would be on the shortlist. So, I entered this one with some trepidation. There are certainly some songs where you have to turn your brain off in order to enjoy it; "Don't Shoot Shot Gun" is an easy target, but see also Armageddon It. The lyrics are so inane they almost ruin an incredible sounding song. That's the thing, though - outside of the sugar song, it sounds amazing. A great album for background listening. I'm glad that this project forced me to take another look at this one. Best track: Gods of War

Oddly up my alley

pretty great hard rock album,

Classic

Pour Some Sugar On Me is for sure in the running for Most Overplayed Songs Ever. Other than that this is fine.

The hits were hits, the rest?

Geoff Leopard Very much of its time, which is no bad thing. 80s hair metal is severely underrated. Not much more to say about this one. It bangs. Favourite track: Pour some sugar on me

Nirvana's Unplugged was my album yesterday, and my God what a contrast. After hearing the stripped-down, completely exposed naïveté of that live album, this super-polished, cynical studio creation is like something from another planet, and you start to understand why Nirvana was so appealing to kids back in the early 90s. Years of listening to Def Leppard records will do that to people. Anyways. Is this any good? I don't know. It isn't real. It's like the CGI version of music. It looks cool but it isn't actually happening. The drums and bass all sound incredibly fake. Songs are assembled rather than performed. Which feels weird and inauthentic to me. So much for the performance aspect of this album. But the songs? They're pretty great - as far as pop metal goes. Def Leppard were really going for it here. Trying to throw as many hooks at the wall as they possibly could.... it's actually fun to listen to. "Pour Some Sugar On Me" is incredibly cheesy, but also just plain incredible. If there is a pop-metal zenith, that is it. Also - having had one of Slade's records fairly recently I can say with confidence that I get it now- that band was hugely influential on this type of chorus-forward heavy metal. I also can't help but compare "Gods of War" with Metallica's "One"- both anti-war songs, but one really SOUNDS like an anti-war song. The other could be an anthem for anything. But I don't hate it, and it's certainly interesting. I'll bite - THREE STARS

Eh Pour Some Sugar on Me is good but the rest is meh

Def Leppard is a good band for what they do/ did. If you like it you like it a lot if not I’m sure it’s difficult. I liked the songs I knew and the others were fine.

There are a handful of bands that I clocked back in the 80s (and later) that I refer to as some variation on the sound of the future. Not sure Hysteria holds up in that respect, but at least in the summer of 1988 “Rocket” sure fit that billing. I admire what they and Lange were up to trying to craft the pop metal version of Thriller, but wow are these songs ever long. There are parts of nearly every song I still kinda love and others - usually the chorus - that I absolutely loathe. I guess that formula did gangbusters for them...

pretty good hair metal 💥animal 💥pour some sugar on me 💥hysteria

Standard hair metal. Def Leppard has a very distinct sound. The album had a few hits and was overall enjoyable

Minus one star for "Women." Plus one star for maybe the coolest hair metal album cover of the 80s.

WOOOOO. the problem is that I don't hate hair metal. the bluntness and sexual nature of a lot of the lyrics are guarenteed to drive feminists insane but i think it is ok. as for the music it can be cheesy at times but i found myself able to tolerate it. 3/5

I'm not as much of a fan of this style of arena / light metal rock with slow anthems mixed in, but it's still in a general genre I like.

This is twice as long as it needs to me. Fine, pop-y rock music that is not for me but it's not bad just so produced and it kind of all sounds the same?

I ended up with this on Father's Day, which feels spiritually appropriate. As I understand it, Hysteria is a dad rock classic, and is kind of considered a hair metal high watermark. And, honestly, it probably *is*, I just also don't really like hair metal that much. This being a mid-late '80s hair metal album means that it's inevitably cheesy, flashy, and at least a *little* ridiculous. But I do respect that this album is pretty transparent about the fact that this is a pop album with big guitars. Def Leppard are definitely not trying to be something they're not. And, maybe it's just the father's day spirit, but it kind of worked for me. A lot of these songs are *really* catchy. Women, Animal, Gods of War and Pour Some Sugar On Me are a pretty good encapsulation of what's going on here. Instantaneous pop songs meet metal arrangements and tropes. And the result is a lot of fun. But 62 minutes is a little much for this kind of thing, and I think the last leg of the tracklist is kind of weak. But Hysteria is still very enjoyable.

Although there's some great songs on here, I didn't enjoy this album as much as Pyromania ☹️ Some songs seemed a bit like filler, and that's what let it down 3 ⭐️

A few classic hair bops but not enough sparkle to bring it over the threshold for me.

Pop music (popular music) is a commercial genre defined by mass accessibility, catchy melodies, and relatable themes.

If you dont take this one too seriously its actually for the most part a lot of fun. I am not sure this is what the band intended though. The tracks Animal, Pour Some Sugar on Me and Hysteria were the standouts for me but I genuinely would listen to this one again - at full blast to drown out the sound of my weird next door neighbours music

2nd half of side A; Animal and Love Bites standouts; Pour Some Sugar sounds like the number one hit. Soft spot for Armageddon It; c'mon Steve. Title track and we are back on track after a lull of 2-3 songs. Weird song to end the album on; out with a whimper. 3.5/5

Rocking and rolling like a dad on a boat (white cutoff, aviators)

Hysteria When my cousin worked as a music rep she used to give me all sorts of promo stuff, and one of the things she gave me was an Armageddon It 12 inch single box set with pin badges, posters and postcards. It also came with an Armageddon It grey sweatshirt. I loved that sweatshirt until I burnt a hole in it flicking matches and I put it in the bin to hide it from my mum. This is fun in a way that Van Halen could only dream of, even if it can’t quite sustain its silly enjoyability over a full 60 minutes. It absolutely reeks of the 80s in a good way; the gated drum sound, the big sound, the guitar tone, the synths, the vocal style, the charmingly earnest inanity of the lyrics, the woah woahs. And Pour Some Sugar On Me is an absolute belter. It’s definitely front loaded, the first side being a much stronger set of songs. Alongside Pour Some Sugar On Me Women, Rocket, Animal and Armageddon It are all great examples of 80s hair metal. The second side isn’t nearly as strong, and the stylistic limitations of the genre become more obvious the longer the album goes on. Don’t Shoot Shotgun is good and I do like the mid tempo-ness of the title track. Gods of War is a bit of a low point though, another example of a metal band ham fistedly writing a song about war, man, and the final two tracks check a lot of hair metal boxes without feeling particularly inspired. For the silly exuberance of the first side and for the excellence of Pour Some Sugar on Me it's easily a solid 3 - if I want a fix of 80s rawk then I’ll certainly reach for this again. 🐆🐆🐆 Playlist submission: Pour Some Sugar On Me

A strategy perfectly executed - make something as bland AF and let the American market lap it up. a solid 2.5 stars.

his has some bangers on there but overall not really my thing

Listenable but I don't like it as much as "On Through The Night" or "High & Dry".

Very long for a comedy/gimmick album. I know they don't see themselves as that, but that probably makes it funnier that they take themselves very seriously. That said, some of those choruses are banging. Catchy easily to sing along to and very instant.

This is an ok album. It's a great example of 80s hair metal with it's wall to wall ballads and catchy hooks. It's not bad by any means, just doesn't compare to stronger acts of the era or modern metal genres.

Not bad by any means. Just think it's a bit cynical. The guitar riffs lack a bit of oomph and the drums (understandedly) lack flourish. Clearly trying to make a pop record.

not particularly interesting

Random thoughts: * This is the Def Leppard album to put on this list for sure. If nothing else just to have Pour Some Sugar on Me. * I know this music was popular but man is it repetitive and kinda boring. It’s kinda like they took Zeppelin and made it as bland as possible to reach the world fest audience. * one thing that jumped out on me was the vocal/movie samples. Those really jumped out. Is it a Def Leppard thing? * I’m sure I’ll hear Pour Some Sugar on me a million more times but it would not be because I play this album.

Yep. Decent.

The music itself was a bit cheesy for me, but to be expected from 80s music. Nevertheless, the wholesome lyrics (as far as I could tell) won me over slightly. For a band of its time, it is refreshing to pair this music with lyrics about women that are not actually misogynist. The opening track 'Women' is perhaps not to today's standards,

Rockin

Pretty decent hair rock/metal. The hits are the hits.

This is Def Leppard at their best! It’s them doing exactly what they do at the peak of their power. And you know eh.

I didn’t like this as much as Pyromania, once again the delivery is great but overall the songs did not click with me as much. Pour Some Sugar On Me is a worthy standout

It's big hair 80s rock.

It was fine

Glam rock tal vez?

Hard one to evaluate! I feel like I aught to like this more than I do I'm a sucker for sampling stuff like the Apollo mission for songs, so "Rocket" had an appeal to me (I very much enjoy Public Service Broadcasting). It's a rare case where I think the drums stole the show for me I think the glam-ness of this puts me off. There's a character to songs like "Animal", "Love Bites", and the title track "Hysteria" that make them feel like stadium fillers, but they just feel very vacant to me? Really hard feeling to nail down. Harder stuff like "Run Riot" are a little more my taste by comparison There's some cool guitar, not so much cool bass, and I'm left overall feeling a little eh. I think this is a 2.5 for me, but if I round down I'd be putting it with some stuff I really did not like so I think it's a 3

I didnt really like it that much

Bäst är Rocket, Animal, Pour some suger on me

A full hour of cheese. How has this made it into the top 1001?

Undeniably catchy, for sure, even if it's kinda repetitive. It's like walking through a museum of things that had tremendous value 40 years ago, but are aesthetically tedious outside its cultural context.

It was ok 80's rock. A bit too long, if they had cut it down by about half I'd probably have bumped it a star.

I recoiled a bit after seeing that this goes for 60 minutes, just a bit fed up with long albums recently. This album has lot of very much 80s-sounding guilty-pleasure anthemic rock songs that somehow all sound like could be contenders for singles; like my goodness gracious that's impressive for a 60 minute album. I was a fan of the A-side of the album, the B-side was a bit lacklustre compared to the first half. My expectations weren't high, because you know, 'glam metal' and all. Definitely not too shabby of an album, not sure if I would want to return to this album. This is an album I think best fits as 3.5/5.0, as I think does it's job well but still has some flaws - like it sounding very generic and predictable. So, yeah it for sure exceeded my expectations which helped the time go by faster. Highlight Song/s: "Women" and "Pour Some Sugar On Me"

I have known this album for some time. Animal is catchy. The Hysteria main riff is quite nice. The pop-y-ness is a bit much for me

fun, but kind of default. unsurprising

It was okay. Hadn’t heard these guys before. Probably not a go to, but worth the listen.

I like the playing, it's great. I don't like the singing and the songwriting. Too glammy for my tastes. I understand that this is an important record from the time, but for me it's an unfortunate 3/5

Like it 3/5

Hysteria is the last vinyl LP I ever bought, and it still holds a warm place in my heart. It’s a perfect example of late 80s metal-ish rock, but it feels a little weird listening to it today. It feels too of-it’s-time.

Just ok to me ngl. Never been a huge Def Leppard fan

Wow. Despite never having owned this album, I knew most of the songs. They all sound quite similar, with lyrics designed to appeal to teenaged boys. There are enough “OH YEAHs” that even the Kool-Aid man would say, “Damn, that’s a lot of OH YEAHs.” While I would never listen to this album by choice today, I give it three stars because I, too, was once a teenage boy, thinking about girls and watching MTV (back when they played music videos), sneaking beer, and singing off key. It was a different time.

Album 33/1001. Listened 4/29/2026. Yes, it's 80s rock, but I do like, and it aged better than I expected. Probably won't spin it often, but I enjoyed listening to it.

80s arena rock feels so soulless. Pour Some Sugar on Me is iconic, but the rest of the songs are just all very much the same as each other. Pretty poppy and each song is a full minute or two longer than it needs to be. We don’t need over an hour of 5+ minute songs. It’s ok but doesn’t wow me

Hair metal bands were always laughably bad IMHO - but this one wasn’t actually half bad but still formulaic and repetitive.

Not really my era but I did enjoy this one.

Not a bad band, but were never really my thing, even though a load of my mates were into them. More 'adjacent' to what I listened to

Glam rock through and through. Not a bad album and definitely has some highlights. I don’t think a deaf leopard would enjoy this very much though

If you’re looking for cheesy 80s stadium rock, this album should be at the top of your list. I was not looking for it, but here we are anyway. I vaguely remember my step cousin, who was a huge Metallica fan, having this tape in his car as the token non-Metallica option. So I guess there’s that too.

Ahh the sound of the late '80s...

Good album. A 3,5

A solid classic rock album overall, but doesn't really stand out for me. Their is a reason why only one of the songs on here is very well known. Not bad at all but not exciting for me. Top Songs: Pour Some Sugar On Me, Rocket, Hysteria

Running a fine line between euphoric and making my skin crawl

Just enough pop hits to get a pass mark cause there is a bit of crap as well

Have never been able to get into Def Leppard

Would be a four if the back half were stronger but this is a lot of fun. Only really demands much because the songs go on for so long but rarely overstay their welcome individually.

much better than i expected! quite samey but still generally solid enough for me to enjoy spending time with it

First two songs are ugly, then it hits the favorites. They figured it out.

Love the production this album will always stir up something. But the lyrics are so cheesy on many of the tracks that I can’t bring myself to give it more.

I think the exposure to new music and genres through this site is the reason why I enjoyed this. That’s being said this album is probably 30 minutes too long but definitely fun and gets me amped up.

Ni slabo

Animal Rocket Pour some sugar on me

Hard-Rock, 1987 -> 3

I mean it’s exactly what you expect. You know what Def Leppard is about. Personally I’m only occasionally interested in this kind of music, but it’s the Platonic ideal of it so points for that

Wasn’t a fan at the time but it is pretty slick and has held up ok.

honestly not much to say about it- its fine ig? like. normal dad core

3.5 Stars A lot of things songs are too long for what they are but the ones that hit unfortunately do hit.

I've never listened through a Def Leppard album before, but I thouroughly enjoyed listening to this! I was quite to surprised to discover I loved the other tacks way more than the hits! A solid Glam Rock album!

Uendelig lang, og såvidt gøy å høre på.

Harry, men jammen litt fengende også. Trekker ned at plata er over en time lang.

There are some greats on here. But as a whole I think I can only give it 3 stars. Not terrible for an 80s album for sure though

Cheesy 80’s rock that’s so over produced it sounds like AI. Was a monster when it came out, but only good for a bit of nostalgia now.

This is exactly the kind of music I think of when I hear the phrase "Hair Metal", despite it not really being metal at all. I'm not a huge fan of the subgenre, but I can appreciate some of it. Everyone of a certain age is familiar with a lot of this album whether they were fans or not, but I actually think the best song on here is Rockets. It's got an interesting progression and hook. The rest of it is butt rock. I mean it's all butt rock, and it's fun, but it's nothing too deep or honestly that engaging any more. Good stuff, I just didn't grow up with it so it doesn't really hold the power over me that it does for a lot of people.

It's hair metal - hard to hate, difficult to truly love. 3.5

3 out of 5, second Def Lappard album for me on this list after Pyromania. This one fell short compared to Pyromania but still entertaining.

Fav- pour some sugar on me 3/5

Hahaha this album makes me laugh. It’s so ostentatious & egregious. Very well represents where rock went after the 70’s. Pour some sugar on me is incredible

Deaf Leopard? More like Slippery Fish

Not for me but was enjoyable.

This may have been the first time I listened to this all the way through. Pretty ok to good. Not Quite my cup of tea though.

Has some great hits on it. That said this area of rock isn't my favourite like at all. If we consider the big genres, rock is by far my all time favourite, but this glam metal sub-genre isn't to my liking that much. It has such a specific sound. Each time I hear any song that's part of it, I'm transported back to my teenage self when I would hang out with my friends at this place in my tiny town that always played this type of music. That's a bit unusual cuz I was a teenager like 5 years ago. So, hearing this album filled my nose with a powerful cig smell and my mouth with a strong beer taste. Alright album, but it's better in smaller doses if you ask me. I'd listen to a song here and there from time to time.

A few good songs

Slickly produced and of its day a huge album not really my thing but I give credit where its due

I wanted to like this more than I did. I have nothing against Def Leppard, but this production was SO glossy, and SO overwrought, it just sounds like a muddy mess. It's good, not great. 5/10

What has nine arms and is actually a bit better than you would expect, given its contemporaries?

Cool, in a certain kind of way

This is pretty good album, I prefer Pyromania myself.

I already knew several songs on this album and possible have listened to the full album once or twice before. It starts off strong, and has some very big hits, the best of which is Pour Some Sugar On Me. This album has some killer guitar work, and the guitar tone is perfect. However, I feel the album is a little uneven in song quality and a bit too unvaried in terms of sound. I would listen again, but honestly I'd prefer to just listen to a few songs instead of the whole album.

This is so cheesy it's kinda great. Biggest disappointment is Armageddon isn't about their drummer losing his arm. That would've been hilarious.

A fun album and lots of great songs for the first half of the album. Lots of energy but could have been half the length of album.

This one is a harder one for me. It's a great example of pop metal that was insanely popular and the songs are just downright catchy. But, for actual metal fans, this was nowhere near as good as pyromania - just produced (over produced) to a completely different level to appeal to the masses

It's not bad but nothing special to me

LITE ROCK HELL YEAH!!! Pour some sugar on me är så nostalgiskt från GH tiderna back in the days. Women, Rocket, vilka bangers alltså. Det här är right up my alley när det kommer till rockmusik. Roligt på Gods of war när den bytte tonart typ 50 gånger också haha. Excitable, vilket intro HAHAH, ARE YOU EXCITABLE x10, riktigt driv i den också 7/10

i mean like its a good album pues, pero like i wouldnt listen to it again, pero no me quejaria si lo pusiesen pues, como que preferiria otrto.

Not really a fan of that stereotypical 80s rock sound in this way. 5/10

I'm a Def Leppard fan, one of the first albums I bought (my parents bought for me but I got to pick it) was a Def Leppard album. THAT album is superior to this. I dont know that anyone needs to hear a Def Leppard album before they die but if they did its Pyromania. While Pyromania is clearly very polished rock aiming for the charts this is a damn set of antique silver its so polished for the charts in comparison. That being said it is a perfect reflection of its time and its 7 hit singles speaks to how successful this record is/was.

Lively and entertaining

Was surprised to see how many radio hits came from this album. This album is ridiculously horny, like holy hell.

is it a classic? yes. is it too long? also yes.

This is when they jumped the shark in my opinion. Doesn’t help that some of these songs I have heard a million times

I’ve heard this 100,000 times…doesn’t hold up over time..cool in the 80’s but doesn’t hold up

I don’t mind this, but I wouldn’t seek it out to listen to.

it's fine. musically it's fun. but I'm sick of listening to lyrics that sound like they were written by guys who've never had a meaningful non-sexual interaction with a woman

It's like a dumbed down synth pop version of Van Halen. It has some good parts. The singer has bad technique. He has more power, but he doesn't use it. Sounds like a funny voice. Favorite song: Animal.

I mean, it's fun, but it also well and truly overstays its welcome.

this was my moms music when she was in high school so it holds a special place in my heart favorite tracks: women animal

I'm torn. On the one hand, it's the epitome of vapid hair metal at the tail end of the 80's. On the other hand, my inner 12/50 year old really vibe with it.

I was familiar with the name of the band, but I couldn't have named an album or song. It was a band I always told myself I should listen to, but never got around to it. Until now. I found the music so uninteresting that I didn't even get annoyed by it. Irrelevant. 3/5

Apparently they set out to make Oops! All Hits and you can definitely hear it. Diving hard into the pop side makes this more enjoyable in 2025 than I expected.

A solid rock album. Nothing groundbreaking. I only knew Pour Some Sugar On Me so this album did not have the memories aspect. That’s why it gets 3/5.

Album 1001 of 1089 Hysteria - Def Leppard (1987) Rating : 3.5 / 5 This is one of those albums where it’s hard to really knock it, but just as hard to get excited about it. The songs are enjoyable, the hooks are there, the musicianship shows up when needed, and the vocals and production are exactly what they’re supposed to be. It’s polished, professional, and undeniably well made. That said, it never really goes over the top for me. Everything stays in that same comfortable, radio-friendly lane the whole way through. Nothing offends the ear, nothing really surprises you, and nothing made me stop what I was doing and think, now that’s something. It’s pleasing - just not gripping. The best way I can describe my reaction is the Clark Griswold Grand Canyon moment: I’m going to listen. I listened. It’s over. What’s next? There’s nothing wrong with the experience, but there’s also nothing that lingers once it’s done. I get why this album was massive and why so many people love it. For me, though, it lands firmly in the category of a strong “meh” - solid, competent, and easy to listen to, but not one I’ll feel compelled to revisit anytime soon.

I think there's a really dated sound that a lot of like the arena rock stuff from the 80s has, like Journey and these guys and stuff like that. And it's charming, it reminds me of my childhood, but it also kinda grates on you after a while. It's not bad perse, but its not exactly good any more either. Favorites: Rocket, Pour Some Sugar On Me, Excitable

Recognised quite a lot of these, not bad but not where I'm at these days. Good to see Sheffield bands the list though!

Animal Love Bites Pour Some Sugar on Me Hysteria

We listened to this non stop in junior schools as 12 year olds. My judgement will definitely be distorted with nostalgia. Its mostly VERY cheesy hair rock ...but so many memories associated with this album that I am going to rate it way higher than it probably deserves. i still remember half the songs lyrics. It does deteriorate significantly as the album progresses though. realistically it is a 2.5, but I will give it a 3

"Animal" is alright. Mostly meh here for me, I'm in the 3 category. I remember the video for "Pour Some Sugar On Me" though.

I'm never quite sure if Def Leppard is glam metal, rock, or pop. I guess that's what leads to a lot of their appeal, they are accessible to people in multiple genres. This album in particular has a lot of mainstream appeal due to the sheer radio-friendly and approachable songs on it.

I like the plasticky production on this. That side of it feels like a step up from Pyromania but I'll never be convinced by Joe Elliott's vocals. They work best here when they are smothered with the enjoyably over produced harmonies. Why is it so long?

Que temazo por some sugar on me che

These guys have a one armed drummer! I gave this a real listen. I didn’t hate it. I can see how these guys could be enjoyable. I mean it sounds fun the whole way through and I know the hits. In the end this hair metal rock just is not my jam. It all feels a little surface level.

While the songs sounded similar, I enjoyed every single one. I can't really explain it, but I did recognize 'Pour Some Sugar on Me'

It was fine.

Big dumb fun, but my appreciation ends there. Metal albums released in 1987 that deserve to be on this list more than this one: Nightfall - Candlemass Scream Bloody Gore - Death Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part I - Helloween Killing Technology - Voivod Pain of Mind - Neurosis Abigail - King Diamond Crossover - DRI Among the Living - Anthrax Not to mention the countless recordings of bands that didn't make it because they lacked the funds, reach or otherwise means to become successful in the corporate rock age.

Def Leppard perfects the commercial pop strain of heavy metal, and with that, all joy of what the genre should be is gone. The only Hysteria here is in lamenting the death or a genre.

Was familiar with the singles of this album but had never listened all the way through (was more of a Pyromania kid). Actually, was more than familiar with the singles - they were omnipresent in 1987. At 8 years old I had a fake guitar (couple of pieces of wood nailed together) with which I mimed 'Love Bites' over and over- weird song choice, but it was on a mixtape I think either me or someone else dubbed from the radio. 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' of course was the biggest hit and a legit crazy good song, even if it, at times, sounds like Mother Goose gone insane. The production is the thing here, though. Mutt Lange (husband of Shania Twain, and call me crazy but there are several tracks on this album that could be Shania songs) produced the hell out of this. It's borderline avant-garde at points, somehow sounding still futuristic despite its dated qualities. The album starts with one of the more mediocre songs on the album, 'Women', followed by 'Rocket' which struck me as willfully obtuse. Finally, 'Animal' begins a string of undeniable bangers and the album really takes off. Couple of filler songs late in the tracklist and it should have ended at 'Hysteria'. Sonically, it's not too much to call this a masterpiece but the album as a whole doesn't quite live up to the talent behind the boards.

This is certainly one of the albums of all time. While I have no doubt it would blast my face off in the live setting, it's very long and samey. I honestly got very tired by the end of it because no song on here is distinguishable from any other. Definitely a time capsule.
