Fiquei hard rock das ideias Bom demais
My intro to DL. Packed full of hits but as I learned from the ‘purists’ a bit too polished and lacking the rawness of Pyromania. Always will be a time and place album for me
As a passionate hater of all things hard rock–related, I’m finding it difficult not to have fun with this. Seeing that Hysteria clocks in at 60+ minutes, I initially considered skipping it altogether. Glad I didn’t give in to that impulse, because I found myself having a genuinely good time - and even laughing out loud on more than one occasion. One thing that puzzles me, though, is this: how can you spend three (!) years recording an album and then completely forget to amp up your lyrics, which tend to read like the diary excerpts of a horny fourteen-year-old with access to a multi-million-dollar studio? Still, if you normally couldn’t give a damn about glam or hard rock and then, one fine day, wake up feeling that your record collection could tolerate a single album from this divisive genre, make it this one (aside from maybe Appetite for Destruction). And I’m probably about to completely overrrate this thing…
Alright, Def Leppard. You win this round.
This is way, way better than I expected. Cheesy, yes, but also epic and pretty damn fun.
i love def leopard, this isn’t my fav album by them but it’s close. i had lot of fun listening to this, it’s not something i would usually listen to. great album
80s metal. Pretty epic, hair metal. Tamer than one would think and aggressively 80 in a cool way. Very melodic. Fun classic rock.
Still a fun album packed with banger (seven singles!!!) although it don't hooks me the same way like then.
Hell yeah I think this would be a 5 star album if it ended with "Hysteria," but it doesn't, so 4 stars.
awesome. good old classic hair metal. great album!
Timeless rock hymns with beautiful guitars, okay singing and a cool, one-handed, powerful drummer.
This was honestly great :D I wasn't expecting to like this Hair Metal thing that much haha
Amazing album! Perfect ‘80s glam metal/hard rock. One of the best hard rock vocals ever. My cup of tea!
2 added to my favorites. Would listen again if asked to.
Favorite Track: Pour Some Sugar On Me
Perfect example.of what 80s power metal can be. Raw and stupid in one moment, powerful and moving the next. Some bangers on here. 237.
Never loved this album as much as I should have.
I’m more of a Poison guy, but this is still some solid 80’s music 🤘🏻🤘🏻
The seven (!!!) singles still hold up....but the rest seems like filler. Chop off 15 minutes and this would probably be five stars.
It's a fun album, hair metal usually is fun! Goes on a little too long though. Funny that it sounds so big and American, but they're actually from Sheffield, all 'eh up', flat caps, whippets, that sort of thing.
What a time the hair metal era was. This album specifically might be where things peaked in that regard too. Every track sounds like it was written with the sole intention of charting as a single (seven total here, in fact). Just power ballads that shred left and right. And you know what? It's enjoyable, dammit. I can acknowledge that these lyrics are cheesy, the production is a tad over-polished, and the album as a whole is fairly bloated. However, I was obsessed with this era of rock when I was younger and I guess the nostalgia still seeps through from time to time when it comes to music. It's better to just loosen your guidelines here and judge this as a pop metal record, rather than purely metal/rock.
The Good: We get to be hysterical! The Bad: We also have to be def… They Ugly: The spots on this leppard… I have a connection on LinkedIn who was a record executive back in the hay-days of records and he can do nothing but sing the praises for this album, which he worked on. In his opinion, the greatest rock album. I wouldn’t want to go that far… however, I’ve been playing this album 4 times already in a 24 hour period, not because it is the greatest music ever, but more because it is the kind of music which allows an older fart such as myself to grin while I think back to when this album came out and girls were hysterical about the boys in the band, while the boys wished they were in the band… Just like with the other DL album on this list, Pyromania, this album is stained in cheese, but such fun cheese that I believe I am doing all a disservice if I don’t rate this album at least a 4* As far as ‘80s rock albums go, it is technically speaking a 5*… but I was into Prince in the ‘80s… so there...
My last album was In Utero by Nirvana and I noted how grunge blew the 80s hair bands off the charts in the early 90s. Def Leppard was one of those bands. That being said, I love this album from start to finish. Saw them in 1987 with Europe as the opener. Side note, Europe opened AND closed with the song Final Countdown - interesting choice. They are great in concert. It’s a tight and well over-produced album for sure. Because of that, it appealed to the masses and was a monster of an album that produced single after single. One of my all time favorite cheesy songs is from this album, Hysteria. I always thought it odd they chose such a mellower song as the title of the album. They fancied themselves as rock artists so you would think they would have chosen a harder edged song to name the album. A great album I will still listen to from start to finish - much for nostalgia purposes, but isn’t that in part what music is about?
4.7
Good album. Mostly enjoyed it for the nostalgia.
The peak of butt-rock/hair metal. Not really my style but well done.
A lot of particularly great tracks on this one, and they could never make me hate arena rock. Some of the garbled samples weren’t my favorite thing to listen to, though.
No taki ulubiony zespół wszystkich ojców, ale jak wiemy, ja mam trochę gust starego człowieka. Pour some sugar on me na zawsze w moim serduszku i chociaż reszta utworów jest dość podobna i gdzieś znika w tle to sam ten jeden hit wyciąga tę płytę na 6.5/10 równane w górę.
Previously rated: #592 - Pyromania (5/5) **************************** Album #967 I had this one on cassette in my early teens. I listened to it a fair amount back then, and I still hear some of these songs on the radio today. Some others, I can't remember, so it's been a while. They packed a lot into this single-length album, including some longer versions of the many singles they released from it. It is pop-metal, much lighter stuff than their previous albums. The guitar solo in Armageddon It exemplifies this pretty well. Still, I found myself bopping and singing along to a lot of the album. After the album was over, I played a few of their earlier, better songs like Bringing on the Heartache, Too Late for Love, and Comin' Under Fire. Gods of War is probably the standout deep-cut here, a poppy catchy chorus anti-war song.
You know what? Usually this genre blends together for me pretty badly, but somehow Def Leppard managed to penetrate through that. I ended up liking about half the songs here (and the rest are okay). I think I'd chalk it up to their delivery of certain lines, sometimes that alone piques my interest in a song!
Wasn't expecting to be liking glam rock today. Especially not for over an hour. This kinda rooooocks though 🎸 Standouts: Animal • Love Bites • Pour Some Sugar On Me • Gods Of War
This record is just fun music. The lyrics aren’t the best, the music isn’t overly innovative, but it’s just a fun listen. I had to tell myself not to take this one too seriously, and I enjoyed the listen. 3.75/5.
“Don’t you just feel like you’re at a social and drunk” - Kerri This album was Def Leppard’s bridge into more of the pop genre as their 3rd album. Inspired by Thriller they were wanted to make a bunch of pop hits. I just assumed this was what all Def Leppard sounded like because it’s heavy play time at socials, etc. So I guess I only know the mainstream version of Def Leppard.
Def Leppard no ápice criativo. Álbum que virou clássico. Pula Unicrom.
Well this was a fun listen. Familiar with Hysteria and a lot of the songs on it. Side A is truly remarkable and just an 80s hair metal masterpiece, side B is ok and has Hysteria on it. Had the makings of a 5 star album but might have just peaked too early
Yeah it's dad rock but it's actually good dad rock.
Have a hell of a soft spot for Def Leppard and this album in particular. Pour some sugar and Hysteria are stone cold classics but also shoutout to Women, animal, and don't shoot shot gun.
What a landmark in 80s glam metal - sex, drugs, violence and screeching guitars packaged perfectly together by Leppard
8/10. Didn’t expect to enjoy this much. Repeated the first 5 songs a few times.
Baustelle, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Flutscht sauber durch.
fav songs: animal and love bites
I note before listening this album has a number of Radio classics. Speaking of which, Animal is a fantastic tune. Pour some Sugar on me is... well worn.
I honestly have more respect for them now. I mostly knew them as Pour Some Sugar on Me and that's it. They may have been the mindless rock of their time, but it's layered and interesting musically.
Man. The production on this record is some of the most incredible, fussy, huge sounding music I've ever heard. I appreciated it as a kid, and now even though it sounds kind of silly and cheesy, it is still just as rousing as it ever was!
Def Leppard manages to carry that signature 80's rock sound into the 90's and keeps it pretty authentic, it sex, drugs and rock n' roll through and through. This is a classic rock album I grew up with in my household so its hard not to let nostalgia blind me, but man its just a fun energetic experience. It does overstay its welcome a bit, but it comes out the gate with fire. 4 out of 5 but 10 out of 10 for one-armed drummers.
First off… fucking stellar album cover! Second… the first half of this album is fantastic. Those drums sound crisp, the vocals and growled in an almost comical way, the guitar riffs kick ass. I was shocked by how much I enjoyed the first half. Second half isn’t as strong but I rode the high of the first half and enjoyed it too. Not quite a 5 star album. 4.5 for sure
To me its like if Motley Crueueue were good. Animal is such a massive 80s banger. Pour some sugar on me is a timeless perverts classic. A lot of the music is kind of samey, yes, but the poor fucker only has one arm. The album is a lot of fun, big time. Sick album art as well.
Great album Very memorable with little to no misses
My son wanted this album t-shirt because it had a "Leppard" on it and we had to coach him to say his favorite song was "Pour some sugar on me" but in the end he preferred "Rocket"
\m/
This album was huge when I was in high school, but I never listened to the whole thing until now. At least, not in one sitting, because I knew almost every song on here due to its incredible radio presence. I was never a big fan, though. Still not, really. However, judging this album relative to all music options, not just those of the era it came out, it much better than it used to be. In other words, relative to the watered down quality of music the last couple decades, Def Leppard has started to sound pretty darned awesome to me. Which says a lot because I really didn’t like them back then. Extra points that my 16 year old daughter enjoys this more than contemporary stuff.
This is a fun one. Just ridiculous 80s butt rock and soft metal. Tons of great shredders and power ballads.
The apex of 80’s over-production. Layered guitars, gated drum samples, and stacked vocals all blend together for a style that resides somewhere between metal and electronic pop. Six top 40 singles.
I think this was the turning point of when all heavy rock albums began to sound the same. Production was over the top and influenced everything that came after
So fun... straight up 80's
Always enjoyed this album since I heard my mate play it on the school bus back in 1987. Still got my cassette tape of it somewhere.
It’s proper 80’s cheese rock but I can’t help but enjoy it.
I was never a fan of the long haired hard rock of the 80s but after listening to this LP it might change my view of some of their material. This is a strong album with 3 or 4 top hits on it plus other good songs.
Throw all restraint out the window and make the biggest, slickest, hookiest record that technology can manage. Then pull it off. Really fun record.
This was a fun album to listen to.
возможно местами затянуто, но в целом добротно. такой знаете угар по старческому дерьмецу
Fun album that I hadn't spent much time with before. Probably a bit more pop/balldy than I was expecting but good tunes. Pour Some Sugar being irresistible.
Quite liked this, felt like good classic stadium rock stuff
A lot of 89s bombast, but these guys really bring everything they got
Glam metal cool
Never given Def Leppard a fair shake outside of the hits. PSSOM is an easy favorite. I really enjoyed almost every song on this album to be honest. They do tend to blend together a bit, but I didn't mind when I was liking each one. Only odd part that made me go 🤨 was the beginning of Excitable... Going to ignore that! I liked this whole album much more than I expected I would. Would listen again! Favorites: - Pour Some Sugar on Me - Armageddon It - Run Riot - Hysteria
Damn, I love hair metal. Not ashamed. These guys were “made for radio” rock stars and absolute hit machines. Def Leppard perfected the hair metal formula better than any of them without losing their shit and turning into douchebags.
I like what this album is going for, I do enjoy all most of Def Leppard‘s music. However, it is a little bit too much Def Leppard for me. They’re good in small chunks, I really enjoyed the first half of the album, but it got to be a bit too much at the end. I don’t think it reached the height of thriller or anything like that, but it was an ambitious solid effort. But it was an ambitious solid effort. Four out of five.
An album with quite a few classic rock hits. Love Bites is an underrated track. It’s easy to overlook Pour Some Sugar on Me given how often it’s played on classic rock stations/playlists, but it really is a solid track and the band’s best.
fun album
So much fun. I fuck with it. Will be listening to other stuff
Love, love, love! So classic Def Leopard.
4*
Really great album, so many iconic songs!
Classic 80s
Packed with radio hits. Not sure it deserves a 4 but I was talked into giving it a 4 by my partner who now has Animal stuck in his head.
4/5
Wonderful first album to have generated. This classic holds a special place in my heart, i listened to it non-stop for years when it came out!
It rocks
"Hysteria" is the fourth studio album by English rock band Def Leppard. Glam metal, arena rock, hard rock and pop rock are the Wiki-listed genres. Yep, the definition of arena rock. The album took over three years to create due to delays including a car crash involving drummer Rick Allen which cost him his arm and cycling through multiple producers before finally landing on Robert John "Mutt" Lange. Other bandmembers included Joe Elliott (lead vocals), Phil Collen (guitars, backing vocals), Steve Clark (guitars, backing vocals) and Rick Savage (bass, guitar, backing vocals). Commercially sales initially stalled but skyrocketed after the release of "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and reached #1 in the US and UK and has become one of the best selling albums of all time. It had generally positive reviews and was also the last album with guitarist Steve Clark. All songs on side one were released as singles. "Women" begins things. Glossy guitar and drums. Echoing vocals and guitar. A pronounced bass. Backing vocals chanting "Woman." A slapping drum sound that's kind of annoying. Why men love women. A rocket blasting off starts "Rocket." A big sound with rumbling drums, guitar strings and layered guitars. Elliot's lead vocals and backing vocals deliver one of the many memorable choruses. References to many influential bands and, at seven minutes, is way too long. I have to admit, I love the opening guitar riff and power chords to "Animal." A very catching song. Their formula works perfectly here. Talk about a formula working: if you said name a song that makes you think musically of the mid to late 80's, for better or worse, it would have to be "Pour Some Sugar on Me." It was impossible to miss. A classic guitar riff opening. Power chorus, a classic vocal chorus and yes, it's catchy. I wonder if Elliot actually had sugar poured on him. The highlight of side two is "Hysteria." A slower song with a melancholic guitar melody and an emotional vocal delivery by Elliot. Some of the best backing vocals and choruses on the album. He wants a girl so bad, he gets hysteria when she's near. It's hard to think of an album that better defines the mid to late 80's than this one. It's formulaic but it works. Layered guitars, power riffs and chords, both catchy and annoying choruses and overproduction. The band and the producer Lange had a goal to make an album like Michael Jackson's "Thriller" where every song has the potential to be a hit. And, yes, they succeeded. For me, the good with guitar and catchy choruses far outweigh the bad being the overproduction and annoying choruses. I have a feeling everyone everyone has an opinion and where they stand on this album.
Very fun! Sounds like it would be a good album to sing along to in the car.
The height of 80s hair bands and pop metal! 7 singles, a chart topping album, all with a one armed drummer. Listening to this brings me back to those days. I listened to a lot of Def Leppard back in the 80s, and it’s still nostalgic, but not as great as I remembered. Still fun to rock out to a bit here and there, but definitely not something I seek out for my old school rotation.
Pop hair metal is not my genre, however I've had a fondness for Def Leppard since Bringin' On the Heartbreak from High n' Dry. Then I saw them in 1983 after the release of Pyromania (opening for Billy Squier...hilarious). Hysteria only has maybe four songs that I listen to, but one of them is an all time favorite for pure fun....Pour Some Sugar On Me. So for that song alone I'd have to give this album a 4.
Such a dilemma. I love Def Leppard and I firmly believe that they are a power pop band at heart, as is clearly evident in the harmonies in the many choruses they throw into their overstuffed songs. The first side of this album is one banger after another; the second side peters out and the whole thing could easily be 20 minutes shorter, both by cutting entire songs and losing about 3 minutes of each of the longer ones. Nonetheless, I find their inability to edit, leading to seven-minute songs with meandering bridges, kind of charming, so I'll blame the album's faults on Mutt Lange and give it a 4.5.
This album is a monument to the gluttonous and over-the-top sound that is 80s hair metal, in all the best and worst ways. It's cheesy as hell, bloated, and overly polished... but I can't bring myself to hate it, despite being prepared to when I saw the 1hr+ runtime. Maybe it's nostalgia, but just by listening to the SEVEN singles on this thing, it's clear that this album was a force to be reckoned with in the late 80s, and I can't help but be totally swept up in the tidal wave of rock n' roll awesomeness. And as a drummer, how can you not respect the hell out of Rick Allen for giving an absolutely killer performance AFTER losing an arm. That fact has been the butt of many a joke in the music community for years, but when you step back and seriously think about that scenario and how that must have affected his life, it really is an incredible musical feat.
Pour Some Sugar On Me
A fun album. Dads everywhere rejoiced when this was released.
Guter Hardrock mit gutem Konzept. Gerne mal wieder.
I really enjoy a ton of 80s and 90s rock bands that are contemporaries of Def Leppard, but admittedly have never really been as big a fan of DL as a lot of others. But results are results and it’s hard to argue with a series of things: - Very few bands have sold 20m albums in their careers, let alone selling 20m copies of one record like DL did with this album. - Very few albums have a consecutive song run of hits like songs 2-6 on this album: Rocket, Animal, Love Bites, Pour Some Sugar on Me, and Armageddon It, all of which made the Top 20. - Rick Allen’s ability to adapt to playing drums with one arm is pretty incredible, and you would never know it on this album. Half of this record is still played on the radio (some more than others) so it wasn’t hard to burn through those and enjoy them. The non-singles I hadn’t heard before and each one of those was a bit of strange listen for me. They would all have parts that I enjoyed and started heading in directions that had a chance to be great, but they would all take turns that I didn’t really like as much, often into very generic choruses. As a result, I didn’t really find anything new that I have to come back to. Still, the sheer sophistication that DL creates at various points on this album and the hits that it generates sets Hysteria apart from most other albums of this age. And, to be honest, the hits hold up after all this time. So despite my lack of DL fandom, surprisingly, this album gets 4 stars from me.
While this album sounds completely stuck in its era it also shows how l80s music can be exciting and beautiful. Much better than I expected.
Great Album! Some MEGA hits on this one. This was a soundtrack to my early childhood. It brings back so many memories.
great
Not exactly the pinnacle of great music, but it's fun as hell, so who cares? Does exactly what it's supposed to do.
Lots of bangers, 4 stars
It's 80s as hell, but it's a good fuckin time.
first listen i feel like to many this is iconic
nochmal anhören pour some sugar on me
Úff hvað það var hressandi að fá almennilegt rokk. Það er ekkert leyndarmál að þetta er minn tebolli og svona plötur munu alltaf skora hátt hjá mér. Æðislegt. Fer aftur á fóninn í bráð
80s in your face, perfect A side, ok B side
Tempted to give it 5. Would go 4 and a half if i had the option. This is them at their peak. Absolute bangers from go to wo. Woodchopping on the drums and some awesome guitar work. Almost every track is a single or single quality. None you would want to skip.
classic. in 2025 it's hard to classify this as any sort of "metal". sounds like pop!
01) Women - 7,0 02) Rocket - 7,0 03) Animal - 9,0 04) Love Bites - 9,5 05) Pour Some Sugar on Me - 9,5 06) Armageddon It - 8,0 07) Gods of War - 8,0 08) Don't Shoot Shotgun - 7,0 09) Run Riot - 7,0 10) Hysteria - 8,5 11) Excitable - 7,0 12) Love and Affection - 7,5 TOTAL: 7,92 (79/100) Current ranking: 184/533
it knows what it wants to do and honestly knocks it out of the park
Solid rock album with many radio hits. My fauvorite song - Rocket
LOVED IT. Lyrics are quite simplistic and songs lack bigger meaning, although 'Gods of War' was as political as Def Leppard get.
A good album, I liked Women and Gods of War the most.
Back in the day I was in one of those music clubs and I got this as CD of the month because I forgot to cancel it. And it’s the only CD I ever gave away because I was a ‘cool’ student and Def Leppard definitely were not cool. However, this is big, dumb, ridiculous fun and who cares if it was ever cool. I feel credit really should go to Mutt Lange though. 4 stars
Decent
It's a sonic time capsule from the late 80s. Pop metal and all of the excesses. They didn't need a producer but an editor, at 60+ minutes long there is a core of truly great pop songs but like old rock stars, the rest seem bloated and aged. I can see this as a prime example of what Nirvana was railing against.
No one is more surprised than me but I really enjoyed this LP. They sounded like they were having fun and it rubbed off on me.🎸🤘
Hit after hit.
one of the few albums from this generator that made me sing and dance at work.
I'm two for two this week on music styles I usually dislike but actually enjoyed an album of! :)
Yes, this album definitely deserves to be on this list! This one changed everything. Just packed with amazing songs, great lyrics and a guy with 1 arm playing the drums. You would have never guessed by listening to it. The album opens with "Woman" which, while a good song, would not have been the song I would have chose to open this album. Maybe the next song, "Rocket" would have been a better choice. Anyways, I highly recommend everyone listen to this. Can't miss songs: Rocket Pour Some Sugar On Me Armageddon It Hysteria 3.75/5
I remember playing the hell out of this cassette....classic....
Fun album, very 80's rock. Did you know the drummer only has one arm?
I was in HS when Pyromania came out - probably wore out 2 cassettes. Loved it back then. I didn't have the same enthusiasm when listening to it a couple months ago. Surprised myself that I didn't really care for it besides a bit of nostalgia. When Hysteria came out I had been in college a few years and my taste had migrated to the Dead, Neil, REM etc. - and I didn't really care for it at that time. So I def surprised myself again by actually enjoying most of Hysteria.
Long ago, right after we listened to "Queen 2", by Queen and right before we listened "This is Hardcore" by Pulp, we listened to Pyromania by Def Leppard, which I gave 3 stars. Back then I said Pyromania was not as good as Hysteria. Well, here is the payoff. 4 stars. Near peak hair metal.
3.5 - Good
Great. Some are pure hype songs and some are emotional. Can't believe it's a hard rock band at times.
Great 80’s tunes
Insane amount of production, everything is expertly pieced together. The gloss and glam is apparent through. The ballads are of course larger than life, this album has been played on literally every radio in the world at least once. Powerful and indefatigable. Sure you can get tired of the pop washed rock, but it’s hard to deny the effect of this album, not to mention the joy of it. The modulated voice synchronization gets a bit old, though.
Great album for its time. A good listen
Standard 80s Hair Metal, turned up to 11. One of the better albums of the 80s.
Good! So Dad rock, but a classic album for sure.
I've never really listened to Def Leppard outside of the hits, which there are many of on this album. Obviously I was impressed with the singles, but also found myself impressed with the rest of the album.
Classic 80s rock music that I've heard many times. Some great songs to jam out to. There are some I would skip but as a whole the album is good.
Man - do they ever have a sound?!? Just a fun 80s rock record.
80% Best: Animal; Pour Some Sugar On Me; Armageddon It; Hysteria Must-Hear? Maybe
"Women" has got to be one of the most earnest rock songs about being horny I've ever heard. It's a thank you to God for creating women ("lots of pretty women") and the joys of "skin on skin" action. It's a silly opening track and I'm totally charmed by it. Track 2, "Rocket," is just as sincere. It's a straightforward ode to rock, filled with direct references to the classics. Even the third song, "Animal," another horny song that uses werewolves as a metaphor for lust, feels strangely sweet. These guys don't hesitate to pack the opening tracks with sex and rock 'n' roll, but somehow they still feel like a goodhearted group of guys. The cheesiness of it all is endearing. “Pour Some Sugar On Me” kicks the album into high gear. From that song on, it’s big, hair metal fun. I’m reading more about them and just learned that the drummer lost an arm while recording this album?! And he kept touring with the band after?! Incredible!
Ah a true 1980's constant. "Hysteria" probably caused a hysteria when it came out, as its massive stadium sound and corny sexy lyrics were seemingly something that the masses really needed at the time. Not trying to hate on it though, I think they rip and the sound is really over the top enough to be great. Also, to me, Def Leppard always seemed like the toughest guys in the softer side of the genre- towing the line between glam rock and heavy metal, which I appreciate. "Pour Some Sugar On Me" is definitely one of the songs that helped define the sound of the 1980s. It's one of the first songs that comes to mind when I think of this time period. They will always be a pop-up video piece of trivia for me when it comes to the drummer Rick Allen losing his arm in a car crash and then continuing to play with a modified drum kit. What a devastating thing to happen to an instrumentalist and what a beautiful turn of events for him to continue playing. I think of him doing that as one of the best stories of how a person overcame a disability through ingenuity. Amazing album cover. Lots going on and I think it's a good representation of what hysteria feels like.
This one was Excitable.
80s rock
Good album. Like very much.
Excellent album that I have heard many times. It was very popular back when I was young and my older sister played it. I thought it was extremely heavy at that young age. It's still a great listen and I enjoyed all the hit songs that are on it. Some of the other songs sort of fit the Def Leppard mold but don't really stand out. I'm sure I will be listening to this one again.
Probably the peak of 80s metal excess, an album that took 3 years to make, produced more hit singles than some bands can claim in a career, and the drummer lost an arm and still played on while one of the guitarists was slowly drinking himself to death....
If you like hair metal, this is as good as it gets. The album is chock full of hits. This is Def Leppard at the absolute height of their popularity and power. Great album with catchy lyrics and music. Honestly this is what I listened to when I was a kid so it’s kinda hard to rate cause I’ve definitely outgrown it but I still appreciate it.
What I needed yesterday. Thoroughly enjoyed.
The longest too long album to ever be too long. That being said this is kinda awesome. The hits here hit hard and are good enough to make up for the oftentimes over long bs.
Fun album. Never got into them before. Basic riffs, but a lot of fun
Apparently the producer was trying to make a rock version of Thriller and I can hear that. It's basically more polished and poppy version of AC/DC which was fun to listen to. This is not high art, and not every song was great, but I did really enjoy "Don't Shoot Shotgun", "Hysteria", and "Excitable".
It was a pleasent surprise. It’s perfectly crafted, manufactured album, but boy, I enjoyed it
One of my comfort albums. Reminds me of the headbanging kids in middle school.
All these years later and this album still kicks ass.
Nostalgic as this is one of four albums my dad played growing up. Still holds up today!
4.5/5 A lovely classic rock album that accompanied a sunny January day - I enjoyed very much. Extra half a star because they were formed in Sheffield (Yorkshire Yorkshire Yorkshire). Standout tracks: - POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME 5/5 <3<3<3 dancing to this in Key Club when I got there at 2am and really should have gone home will always be one of my fave memories <3<3<3 - Gods of War 5/5 - the guitar from about 5:30 onwards is gorgeous and is more nuanced than the rest of the album. - Love and Affection 4/5
Pour some sugar- tune, nice surprise in this album.. enjoyed a lot
First album that I ever owneed
Listening to this after Radiohead was a breath of fresh air. I did get tired of it towards the end. 3.5 stars rounding up.
Powerful sounding, but a but too "glam-y" to be called heavy metal. In any ways offers a really solid audible experience for a first-time listener or a wanna-try soft metal\hard rock enthusiast
One of best Rock Albums
Classic 'stadium' rock. Excellent.
Hard rock'n hits!
like actually??? for what it is??? like its doing what its set out to do so fucking well - so rad
Classic with timeless tracks. Hard to give a 5 with the 80’s rock cheesy sound but close. 4.75
Another first for me here. Holy Hair Rock batman. Loved it
So surprised I liked this as much as I did. I usually hate anything classic rock, but there’s practically no skips on here. Woman and maybe Armageddon are my favorites. Even the big Sugar hit goes hard.
Cheesy but very nostalgic for me. They were my first concert and a lot of these tracks are just simply fun to still jam along to. Maybe trim a couple songs off
I've heard this album many times. Apparently Mutt Lange who produced this wanted to make a "hard rock version of Thriller." The resulting seems very formulaic and designed to be hits. The production pulls out all the stops to use every studio trick available in the late 1980s. It certainly sounds much more pop than metal. No doubting how hooky so many of these songs are and it's easy to understand how they are still listened to today. But boy the lyrics are insipid. But I guess that's not why we listen to hair metal / hair pop, is it? There's also some really questionable "rhymes" Hysterical -> Hysteria Armageddon it -> Are you gettin it? And I want, and I need, and I lust -> Animal I'm giving it 4 stars for all the hits, but I still prefer Pyromania and think that album is a lot more interesting. I guess this makes this list because it's considered a pinnacle of hair metal albums. I would have chosen Pyromania for this list instead.
This is like the musical equivalent of flavored Doritos. Over processed, for sure, but each song is rambunctious, enjoyable and begging to be parodied. You gotta like it. "Do you take sugar? One lump or two?"
Still sounds pretty good...maybe it's the nostalgia kicking in.
This is the most refined rock in terms of being pop music. It's so easy to listen to and had endless singles for a reason, but it feels more built than made. Exceedingly well done for what it's meant to be and makes a ton of sense to be on the list, but there's a hollowness in this despite it being fun.
This genre of music seems to be in a tiny box. Maybe a candy box. It's candy. You can't live on it alone. Excitable vocals are going Michael Jackson. For what this is, it is maybe the perfect representation. This almost deserves a 5 but I can't. This is too much candy for me.
Here's an album that I'm not opposed to the inclusion of. I mean, this thing has apparently sold over 20 million copies! Def Leppard's Hysteria is clearly an album with cultural impact from a very well-known. This actually isn't my first Def Leppard album of the project, as I got Pyromania nearly a year ago at this point. So, which one do I like more? Well, and take this with a grain of salt because I haven't heard Pyromania in a while, but I'd say Hysteria is a bit better. The singing isn't my favorite, but it's not horrible. Joe Elliott is certainly not the worst vocalist in hard rock. The writing is solid. It does go a bit too far in the "generic 70s/80s rock" style for some songs, but it's not too repetitive and hasn't aged that poorly. The sound is probably the best part of the album. It's kind of hard to believe that the drummer only has one arm! The guitar riffs and solos are pretty cool, but not mind-blowing. That's basically what Def Leppard and other bands like them are to me. This album has some great songs. "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and the title track are particular highlights, and I wouldn't really say I actively dislike any of the songs. Overall, while this albums isn't perfect and is a bit on the long side, I would definitely consider this album worthy of being on this list. I like it. Low 4/5.
Rare I say this, but what a fun album. Never really given NWOBHM/hair metal the time of the day but that was a nice little time capsule back to another time. Over the top vocals, over the top guitar work and solo's, decent drumming from a guy missing an important element, altogether an enjoyable experience. One or two songs could have been cut from the album is my only gripe, Love Bites in particular ruined a great run in the otherwise stellar first half. Still, there's much worse out there.
80s rock always hits. I forgot how much I like this album!!
**Album Review: *Hysteria* by Def Leppard** Released in August 1987, *Hysteria* by Def Leppard is one of the seminal works in rock history, representing a culmination of the 1980s rock sound. Produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange, the album was the band’s fourth studio record and became a massive commercial success, selling over 20 million copies worldwide. Featuring a blend of hard rock and pop elements, *Hysteria* delivered anthemic tracks that are as much about the technical aspects of their creation as they are about the stories they tell. This review explores the album’s lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence, while weighing the pros and cons. ### Music Musically, *Hysteria* stands out for its rich layering and meticulous production. Def Leppard adopted a more polished, mainstream rock sound compared to the heavier vibe of their previous records like *Pyromania*. The album features intricate guitar work and multi-layered vocal harmonies, producing a lush, melodic wall of sound that characterizes much of its sonic identity. The songs are structured in a way that is both accessible and complex. For example, "Pour Some Sugar on Me" combines a classic rock riff with a catchy chorus and an arena-ready beat, making it instantly memorable. Songs like "Love Bites" highlight the band’s ability to blend power balladry with hard rock elements, thanks to its sweeping guitar solos and emotive vocals. Guitarists Steve Clark and Phil Collen employed a combination of clean tones and overdriven guitar layers that added depth to tracks like "Animal" and "Hysteria." The dual-guitar approach also featured intricate harmonics and melodic hooks, which set them apart from other bands of the era. Meanwhile, Rick Savage's bass playing and Rick Allen's electronic/acoustic hybrid drumming gave the album its rhythmic foundation. Allen’s use of a custom drum kit, developed after he lost an arm in a car accident, is not just a symbol of triumph over adversity but an essential part of the band’s distinct sound. ### Lyrics Lyrically, *Hysteria* is a mix of love, lust, and life experiences, resonating with broad appeal. The lyrics aren't particularly deep in a philosophical sense, but they do connect with the emotions and desires of everyday life. Songs like "Animal" and "Pour Some Sugar on Me" focus on primal desires and attraction, using straightforward language and suggestive metaphors. "Animal" explores themes of wildness and passion, drawing connections to the untamed nature of love, while "Pour Some Sugar on Me" is full of sexual innuendo that plays into rock's history of lustful anthems. More introspective tracks like "Hysteria" and "Love Bites" delve into the complexities of relationships. The song "Hysteria," for example, reflects on longing and emotional conflict, while "Love Bites" serves as a ballad about heartbreak and vulnerability. The lyrics are designed to appeal to a wide audience without alienating casual listeners, making them relatable while also driving the album's emotional intensity. However, the album's lyrics can be seen as somewhat formulaic, sticking to familiar themes of romance, seduction, and longing without pushing the envelope or exploring more diverse topics. This lyrical approach fits the mainstream rock template, which might limit its appeal to those looking for more profound or socially conscious content. ### Production *Hysteria* is perhaps most notable for its groundbreaking production, thanks to "Mutt" Lange’s meticulous and layered approach. Lange aimed to make every song a potential single, which involved an extensive recording process that spanned over three years. The production is characterized by its clean sound, multi-track guitar layers, and an abundance of vocal overdubs. This high production value ensures each track is polished and radio-friendly, contributing significantly to the album’s wide appeal. The use of state-of-the-art studio techniques was groundbreaking for the time. Lange employed digital technology, which allowed for extensive layering and manipulation of sounds. This method is most evident on tracks like "Rocket" and "Gods of War," where the effects and studio wizardry are front and center. "Rocket," for instance, features numerous vocal effects, samples, and echoing guitar work, creating a dynamic, spacey atmosphere that adds a unique dimension to the album. The downside of the production is that it can sometimes come across as overly processed. The pursuit of a polished, perfect sound resulted in a loss of rawness and spontaneity. The meticulousness involved in crafting the album, while impressive, also detracted from a sense of authenticity. This meticulous production style set a trend for future rock albums but also contributed to criticisms that the album was more a product of the studio than of the musicianship itself. ### Themes Thematically, *Hysteria* largely explores love, passion, and personal struggle. The album strikes a balance between celebration and introspection, with tracks addressing the ups and downs of relationships as well as the highs and lows of life on the road. The title itself, *Hysteria*, evokes a state of intense emotion, whether joy or sorrow, which mirrors the dramatic feel of the songs. "Gods of War" stands out as the album’s most thematically diverse track, addressing the darker and more serious issue of global conflict, complete with sampled sounds of gunfire and political speeches. It gives a sense of gravitas that contrasts with the otherwise romantic themes, demonstrating that the band was capable of tackling more weighty topics even if they chose not to do so frequently. Despite these moments of depth, much of the album’s content revolves around the familiar themes of 1980s rock music: love, lust, and the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. This adherence to conventional themes can make the album feel less innovative from a lyrical standpoint, but it fits well within the framework of its time. ### Influence and Legacy *Hysteria* played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of late 1980s rock and influenced countless bands that followed. Its commercial success proved that rock music could retain a heavy edge while incorporating pop-oriented elements. The album’s approach to production became a blueprint for many rock acts, who adopted similar multi-layered techniques in their recordings. The album also helped solidify the concept of the "power ballad," with "Love Bites" becoming one of the genre’s quintessential examples. Its success demonstrated the viability of mixing rock balladry with hard rock aesthetics, leading to a surge of similar tracks by other bands in the late '80s and early '90s. However, this influence also had its drawbacks. The polished, radio-friendly rock sound became so ubiquitous that it eventually contributed to the rise of grunge and alternative rock in the early '90s, as a reaction against the overproduced nature of albums like *Hysteria*. While Def Leppard’s success set a high standard, it also ushered in a wave of copycat bands whose lack of originality diluted the genre’s appeal. ### Pros 1. **Exceptional Production Quality**: The album's production is a masterclass in studio techniques, resulting in a polished and radio-friendly sound that was ahead of its time. 2. **Musicianship**: The guitar work by Steve Clark and Phil Collen, combined with Rick Allen's unique drumming style, elevates the album's sonic quality. 3. **Catchy and Accessible Songs**: Tracks like "Pour Some Sugar on Me," "Love Bites," and "Animal" have memorable hooks and choruses, making the album a consistent hit machine. 4. **Emotional Range**: Although love and desire dominate the themes, there are moments of introspection and even social commentary, as seen in "Gods of War." 5. **Influence on the Genre**: The album's sound and production techniques have had a lasting impact on rock music and the broader music industry. ### Cons 1. **Overly Polished Production**: The album's slick production, while impressive, sometimes feels sterile and detracts from the raw energy often associated with rock music. 2. **Lyrical Simplicity**: The lyrics are sometimes formulaic, often leaning heavily on clichéd rock themes of love and desire without exploring deeper or more varied subject matter. 3. **Uniform Sound**: While the production creates a cohesive sound, it also means that some tracks can feel similar to one another, lacking the distinctiveness found in albums with a broader range of styles. 4. **Influence Led to Over-Saturation**: The success of *Hysteria* inspired many imitators, which contributed to the genre’s later decline as it became increasingly formulaic. ### Conclusion *Hysteria* is a landmark album that encapsulates the sound of 1980s rock music, blending hard rock with pop sensibilities to create a commercially successful and influential record. Its production techniques set a new standard, while the band’s musicianship brought depth to its meticulously crafted songs. Though sometimes criticized for its overly polished sound and predictable lyrical content, *Hysteria* remains a testament to Def Leppard's resilience and creativity during a challenging period in their history. The album’s legacy is twofold: it set a high bar for production quality and helped popularize the power ballad, but it also contributed to the eventual saturation of polished rock music, prompting a backlash that led to the rise of grunge. Ultimately, *Hysteria* remains a defining moment for Def Leppard and a key album in the history of rock, standing as both a product of its time and a timeless example of the genre's evolution.
I like it. Old-school rock
I like Def Leppard... it's cheesy and over the top but this is at least a 4/5. Rocket is a great song!
High school musical, but with long curly hair and guitars. \m/
What’s the reasoning behind this album being over an hour in length? I’d like to know. There isn’t anywhere close to enough range to justify it. Getting over that for now, this album fucks. HARD. It’s got a punchy sound coming from their one armed drummer. The vocals mixed with their signature production make them unmistakably and cement their unique sound. The instrumentation accomplishes everything it wants to perfectly and so do the vocals. This isn’t the most original or thought provoking album, but there’s no denying it’s fun as hell. 4/5
Listened to this many times in high school but probably not since.
Dan at uni would have been all over this but we never took him and his must tastes seriously. However…. As much as this is clearly big haired, big stadium rock it is actually surprisingly listenable. Pretty much every song has melody and gets the toes tapping. Not music that’s going to change the world but got to give credit where it’s due, they created something here that is an enjoyable listen. Sorry for doubting you Dan. I still draw the line at Bon Jovi though.
80s hair metal is definitely not my genre of choice, but there's some undeniably huge tracks on this one, as well as some solid musicianship.
Dumb-ass fun, or dumb ass-fun, not sure which.
Epic album. Such good rock tunes.
Just an all round fun and brilliant album.
it has some big jams
bayaaa iyiydi
great album, a lot of iconic def leppard songs.
Great stuff
This album is good stupid fun. The lyrics are truly dumb and the music is sickeningly 80s. There are so many over produced arena hair rock anthems here that it actually is impressive. And it actually slaps pretty hard and was much, much better than the Bon Jovi album I've had. As dumb as it all is, my head was bopping along consistently thinking, "hey, why am I not hating this?". Overall, I think Women was my favorite, though I liked 2/3rds of Rocket more, it just meanders a bit much.
I don’t generally love hair rock. This is too long (tails off really badly), too overproduced and very silly. But those harmonies and choruses made me smile. Most records on this list don’t make me smile.
Dumb fun which I can't help but enjoy. Like the movie Airplane, say
Hysteria is the fourth album from Def Leppard, and is one of the best selling albums of all time. The band found world-wide success with their third album, Pyromania, and benefited from well-produced videos on MTV. While recording the album, the band's drummer, Rick Allen, lost an arm in a car accident, adding to the anticipation for the album. Hysteria includes some of the band's biggest hits, like "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and "Love Bites." This album may be the defining work of 80s pop metal.
Compression: the album. But they make it work for them,. This has not aged with grace, but it's fun , dumb and catchy.
What a large sounding album...
Definitive 80s rock. Not a bad track on the album, but the deeper cuts mostly aren't buried treasures. Gods of War is probably the "best of the rest". Hard to shake the feeling that Hysteria and Love Bites are two versions of the same song, but if it ain't broke don't fix it? Definitely not my favorite genre or artist of the 80s, but the star power on display is undeniable.
Only really hits one lane, but it doesn’t very very well !
Great to listen too when you don’t take this too serious. It has some great hooks but the hard rock/heavy metal parts are not as hard as one could wish for. Therefore only 4 stars here.
What an a-side. Mutt Lange knows how to make big dumb music sound the biggest and dumbest
Classy, sophisticated but also full of great riffs, Def Leppard's sound was always a bitt too americanised for me when I was into heavy metal, but listening to iit now they sound far better than most of their NWOBHM counterparts, the title track is a stand out song
7.5/10
A solid album but unnecessary on this list. We don't need a second Def Leppard album, especially when Pyromania does everything this does but better
Bigger, dumber fun
Wasn’t expecting to like it because I am not into hair metal but it blew me away especially with the guitar
Ok
Really fun album that is entirely too long and same-y for what it is. But this is supposed to be fun, damnit, so I still love it all the same. Favorite track: Armageddon It
I have always wanted to sit and listen to this album fully. Have always been a backseat Def Leppard fan. When I hear them I rock out and enjoy it. This is one of those perennial albums that just last forever.
This is the type of music is fully rejected as a teen in the 90s. Now so many years later I can see why this was at one point in time so massive. I will never be a massive fan but I can appreciate it more now.
I saved this album to listen to for my drive down to Charlotte, and I am glad I did because the high energy glam rock was perfect to listen to with the windows rolled down blasting through the hills of central Virgina. I've listened to this album so many times, but it's been a while, and it was one of my favorites in my teenage years so my bias is extremely strong, but it unfortunately did not age as well as I wish it did. The corniness is on the highest level with some of the lyrics. That being said the instrumentals and overall loud singing go so hard and are so fun to sing along to all album. There are a few really big misses with the ballads like Love Bites and Love and Affection. But the rest is just straight up good times. Overall still an awesome and fun album to listen to. It is certainly a very low 4 though
great
Solid album for sure definitely worth a listen. Side note, want to annoy a Def Leppard fan? Ask them what has 9 arms and sucks.
This album, while is kind of cliche and cheesy all around, it is a great record of the hair/glam times. Pour some sugar on me is the hit, but Hysteria is such a great song. I would say that this record, along with Slippery When Wet from Bon Jovi, is the definition of hair and glam, and it was done damn right.
Forgot how ouch I like DL!
I really liked it
Mitäs hemmettiä, Def Leppard olikin näin kovaa! :D Oli kyllä melkein ihan 5/5 levy. Vähän vaan putosi 4 tähteen lopussa. Tosi hyvän mielen rockia. Parhaat: Women, Rocket, Pour Some Sugar On Me, Hysteria
I'll be honest, I wasn't too keen on listening to Def Leppard primarily because I had this image in my head of an 80s glam rock band that made irritatingly antiquated and streamlined hard rock music. And, in a way, I was right, but the album won me over purely based on its more ambitious and interesting execution of that cheesier hair metal sound. With longer songs here, Def Leppard is capable of fleshing out the mood of each one of these songs quite well, establishing unique sounds, riffs, patterns, and ideas that, even if you don't like them at the beginning, will force themselves into your head by the end. I can't recall the number of times a song started up and I was like "This one's not for me" and then by the time it got to the end, I was banging my head along to the chorus. The choruses are typically the highlights, with anthemic explosions of sheer catchiness not unlike many songs by Iron Maiden for example. My favorite choruses had to be "Women", "Rocket" (probably my favorite), and "Pour Some Sugar on Me". Instrumentally, the songs range from psychedelic to balladesque, to more typical throwback 70s hard rock-type sounds. I'll say the latter approach comes off as my least favorite, especially when those group, yelpy, chorus vocals come in; those genuinely sound terrible to me. I think the worst offender is "Excitable". Lyrically, there's not much to digest here. Not to say the lyrics aren't substantive, it's just that they take a back seat when compared to the rest of this album's parts. The song "Gods of War" stood out as the overtly political and anti-war song here, even stitching in a Reagen sample near the end. Aside from that, blood-pumping and magnetic themes of love are what you'll expect across most of these songs. I enjoy the songs near the beginning way more. As the album went on, I just found a lot of the vocal lines tended to bog the songs down. I will say, the first few songs won me over like nothing else. I even loved the slow ballad "Love Bites" which is such an unexpected left turn from the previous songs. Despite its many blaring flaws, there's still a charm to this album that I can't deny, so I still really enjoyed my time with it.
Alltid varit svag för pudelrock från 80-talet och Def Leppard är inget undantag. Det här är musikens motsvarighet till Walking dead eller Sons of anarchy, rätt platt egentligen men ändå väldigt underhållande.
Classic.
Finally. Glam metal that works.
Glam rock-metal. Varios megahits. Un 4.
Glam metal, rock, ochentero.
Bombastic, over the top, and bags of fun. The only drawback to this album is it’s slightly overlong.
I had forgotten how good this album was. Certainly a turbulent time for the band so when Mutt Lange became the producer (I believe) they were in safe hands. Seven big hits off the album - some achievement! I still have the CD that I bought as soon as it came out, with cuttings from rock magazines at the time! Must dig it out and have a read sometime…
Skin on skin.....
Surely the very album the term 'guilty pleasure' was coined for? It makes me feel like a happy 14 year old. Love it. Favourite track: The trinity of Animal/Love Bites/Pour Some Sugar On Me is hard to beat
🤘😝🤘
Fucking classic!
Unexpectedly enjoyable. The production had the ideal pop punch for a commercial rock album, everything sounded immaculate and the songs were mostly very memorable. Only major flaw is that, at 62 minutes, it drags for a supposed grab at pop.
Highly enjoyed, recommend
This album rocks. It’s basically their greatest hits.
This is my middle school soundtrack and while I left behind this style of music, this re-listen gave me chills. It's a 4.5, but not willing to hit 5.
Very strong four. More like a 4 and 1/2.
This album was fun! It's weird how something can be so prototypically 80s and also have no synthesizers. It was probably a little overly long but I did really enjoy my listens.
Maybe the crest of the hair metal zeitgeist, where everything began to roll back and unwind from. Sitting on the edge of the nineties and still bellowing the over indulgence of the 80s, Hysteria has insanely slick production quality. Half of the tunes you know as singles the other half could masquerade as one. I distinctly remember this album as av first grader at the time. Insane that hair metal was an option for me then. It's groundbreaking in excess to an extent and is borderline obnoxious how much you want to hate it but can't.
This album was a juggernaut. I think I've bought this 3-4 times in my life in various formats. There is very little filler on here.
Hits upon hits.
Oh man I can believe I’m saying this but I really had a good time with this one. I kept putting it off for weeks until i decided to take the leap … and … it’s a generally strong record - a really tight back to back hit middle, sandwiched by a well paced beginning and end. Yes it’s hair metal, yes it’s corny at times but it’s better than a lot of middle of the road records on and off this list.
This album takes me back to probably the best time of my life. My dad taught me to play drums to this album. I remember him, my sister (RIP), and I sitting on the floor, each with a pair of sticks, banging the hell out of our light blue 90s style couch before we moved to the drum set. Early 2000s, just us 3. Love Bites is the best DL song. I’ve always admired the DL drummer. One arm and he can play like that? Sick.
I zoned out towards the end but goddamn I had more fun than I expected. More than once my brain expected what I was listening to to break into what I then realised is an Aerosmith song. I guess I don't know the difference, sorry boys. It would have been fun but gross to be in this band.
Amazing record
Very good
Not my thing but always familiar and enjoyable. Extra point for being good despite all of their tragedies.
I have never really listened to much Def Leppard as I thought they were more heavy rock or metal. When I think of them I only think of "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and I just wasn't into them. I was so surprised at many of there songs. they are a little horny and over the top but God Damn I love Classic rock.
Glorious 80s heavy pop.
3rd best leppard album
Classic
well that was fun could do without 'excitable'
Exactly what a hair metal band should sound like, huge drums, synths and of course shredding guitar solos. Def Leppard aimed to make Hysteria the metal equivalent of Michael Jacksons Thriller, and whilst I don't think they quite pulled it off, it is very close. Being at the concerts touring this album would have been incredible, heck I wanted to start head banging in the office as I was listening! Best: Pour Some Sugar On Me Worst: Run Riot
This one is unfair for me to rate too. With very very slight 80's metal cheese ... this is still an absolute power house of an album. 8 out of 10 songs I still remember most the words to. I'm not even sure if I had this album back then.
classic 80s Rock
For some reason, I thought Def Leppard was "serious" metal like Metallica or Iron Maiden. Turns out, they're more akin to Van Halen, which is a brand of metal I do actually like. That said, this album is extremely fun. I only knew "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and had no idea it was Def Leppard. This album had me so hyped. I had a rockin' good time and would give it 4.5 if I could.
I was very surprised at how much I liked "Hysteria." I was expecting something more "80's Metal" like Motley Crue, but I now feel like Def Leppard is more "80's Rock" like Journey or Foreigner. The melodies are much smoother, and the production is very high. If I could remove "Pour Some Sugar On Me," I think it would elevate the album even more, as that song feels so cheesy and lame compared to the other songs on the album. However, I could see myself listening to this album again and more of their music, now that I know their non-singles are better than some of their singles like "Pour Some Sugar On Me."
def leppard was a band on the rise with the release of their album pyromania in 1983. and then december 31, 1984 happened. what happened on that date, you may ask? drummer rick allen was in a car accident where he lost his left arm. somehow he completely relearned how to play the drums WITH ONE ARM! and how did the band respond? not only did they release the biggest album of their career, but it was also one of the biggest selling albums of all time. hysteria was intentionally produced with a more commercial sound in mind. the album produced seven(!) hit singles, six of which took up the entire first side of the album, including (unfortunately) longtime strip club anthem “pour some sugar on me”. for my money, the opening riff to “women” might be one of the coolest opening riffs to an album ever. also, the song “rocket” is about two minutes too long. oh, and the song “gods of war” is a pretty cool little anti-imperialist protest song they snuck in, just for good measure. this is an absolute beast of an album. pop metal perfection. probably the greatest hair metal album of all time. highlights: “women”, “armageddon it”, “gods of war”, “hysteria”.
If the second half could keep up with the first half (or whittle a few out), it would be an all time classic album; a definite 5. Lot of it is cheesy especially with 2020s goggles, but it was a monster.
They really had a run of radio worthy songs. I wasn't a fan at the time, mostly because they had a long period of time with number one songs on MTV and my favorite band was often 2nd. Even though hair metal didn't really age all that well, they still wrote some really good songs.
Skoro svaka je banger, super glam album.
Bit glammy, but some gid riffage.
Old school rocker...still awesome
Pure nostalgia
Great Glam Rock. Liked Hysteria and Animal the most
Glam metal, rock, ochentero.
Pretty iconic. There was a lot of bangers on here. I liked them way more than I remember. When you look back on the best bands of any generation that you’ve been a part of. It’s easy to overlook some. These guys are among the best.
i’ve been asking for some rock, and I finally got it. I really like Def Leppard. I know that my dad thinks otherwise but I believe they’re just a classic rock group with good music.
So close to being a 5, but Side 2 is about 2 songs too long & songs are weaker except for Hysteria.
Great album, I’ll have to listen to it again
Good for what it was. Kids enjoyed it
I'm all about this album. The poppy songs work really well and you can tell they took a lot of care recording/mixing as everything sounds very clear. Armageddon It and Pour some Sugar on me are my highlights
This was a good classic rock album I enjoyed most of the songs.
Classic rock album with some bangers on it and some misses. Overall enjoyable. 4/5
Mint 80s Hair Band. Guitars harder than pop, but not as heavy as metal. Knew many of the songs (this album could substitute for their Greatest Hits) but even the songs I didn’t know felt familiar. This represents my soundtrack of the late 80s. Definitely a keeper. I’ll give it the No-Skip stamp. Mid 4
3.6/5 Another one that rounds generously. This was better than I expected though. Best track: Pour Some Sugar On Me
Denk dat dit het eerste album is wat ik nog niet kende wat me echt heeft weggeblazen, geweldige gitaar rifs en echt een top vocal
It’s a lot. It’s great. It’s a touch dated. It’s a bit of everything 80’s.
Great classic rock!
Favourite songs: Pour Some Sugar on Me, Animal, Hysteria, Rocket, Run Riot Least favourite songs: Gods of War 4/5
J'aime le glam ? 💅
Staple of rock, solid album 7.5/10
Quintessential rock album. So many great hits from this album. However, thats all that it feels like. It tends to drag on for too long and be quite cheesy at times.
Quite enjoyed this one
Surprisingly good. At times Van Halen, at times the Police, there's some great catchy yet inventive tuneage here
Now I didn't grow up in the 80s, but I think Def Leppard is my favorite 80s rock band. It's fun, but rocks, great drums, vocals, guitar solos. What more could you want. And man, this album has so many singles on it. Kept being surprised how many I knew.
Great to hear from Def Leppard again.
As a teen in the early 80s, I pretty much listened to new wave and prog rock almost exclusively. Of course, if you liked new wave, then de facto you hated metal and standard hard rock, so Def Leppard was a band I avoided. Over the years I expanded my tastes to listen to and enjoy bands I would have never considered back then (metal bands like Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and AOR bands like Survivor and Loverboy), but I always resisted giving Def Leppard a chance. After listening to this album, I am wondering why I resisted. This was a good album overall - plenty of harmony vocals (which is always a plus for me), interesting melodies and guitar effects. I am now intrigued to explore the rest of their discography. I feel like the stubborn protagonist in Green Eggs and Ham - "I do like Def Leppard, Sam I Am!" One knock against the album - it runs a bit long with a few fillers. Best songs - Rocket, Love Bites, Women, Hysteria
The essence of the phrase "old but gold."
Solid addition with plenty of jams. A little formulaic in sound and production but you can’t deny the goodness.
A great album for a not such good day. Wish I’d had the opportunity to listen again. 4*
Solid.
Buen disco de rock ochentero destacando guitarras y batería. Muy reconocibles por el estilo y voz. Alguna canción ha perdurado en el tiempo. Me hubiese gustado con algo más de variedad en los tiempos
Really close to being a Mother F-ing Classic! Standouts: Animal, Love Bites, Pour Some Sugar on Me, Armageddon It, Hysteria, Women, Rocket. Others: Gods of War, Don't Shoot Shotgun, Excitable, Love and Affection 4.5/5
Continuing the glam metal from the previous album Pyromania. With album names like Pyromania and Hysteria I would expect something heavier. It's very good within the genre however I prefer other metal genres. Def Leppard never really stuck with me. It's the same with Motley Crue. It's like they're trying to hard to be heavy when in reality it's the typical 80s pop hair metal. Bon Jovi on the other hand is quite enjoyable. Maybe he's just embracing the glam better? Who knows. Well this wasn't a bad album at all. Just not something that would be my first pick to listen to.
Quality.
Listened Before? Y Oh boy have I ever listened before. This was one of the most played albums of my pre-teen years and it still holds up. Solid melodies and guitars, and great singing. Love it. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Pour Some Sugar on Me, Armageddon It
A pop album masquerading as hard rock / soft metal, but in a great way. Mutt Lange production is insanely catchy.
Great album of my youth. Many strong songs on this.
Okay so I'm young enough for this to be nerdy. This album takes me back to middle school. In the Era of Panic! At the Disco and Eminem, my friends favorite artist was Def Leppard. Listened to this stuff constantly around him, and I think the personal connection gets it from a 3 to a 4 for me. RIP Daniel
Loved this album back in the day. Anthem rock at its best. "Love Bites" and "Armageddon It" are favorites. Maybe a bit over processed and gimmicky but it was all good fun.
4.0
Can't help loving this one, I have since it came out.
Noticeably worse than Pyromania. Pour Some Sugar On Me, being the ungodly banger that it is, just about pushes this one to 4 stars. Just. Barely.
This sounds like every other 80s pop metal band but it's approximately 25% more fun.
Grew up listening to the album. Its one of the few albums I've probably heard from start to finish most frequently throughout my life. Love Def Leppard.
Forgot how much I used to listen to this album. Hit after hit. Deserves a 4
Rock it!
This one took me onto a mode of cleaning hysteria. Fun ride for the most part!
