Reviews (page 8 of 13)
Overall a very nice funky/disco-ey album. Some parts get irritatingly repetitive, but the instrumentation throughout is classy and nice - particularly the bass and the brass.
Ikke min greie, men fint å høre på. Begynner å bli en del disco/funk i denne lista nå 🤔
Ganske morsom intro i første låt Kule riff i tredje låt Generelt hyggelig, morsomt, lettbeint, groovy. Artig.
Groovy ahh album (compliment) Ts makes me wanna do the disco finger
2nd in the ‘So catchy it’s almost annoying!’ list of albums behind Houmous & Chutney’s ‘So Catchy It’s Almost Annoying’. Much like Nile Rogers, Len Houmous used the same riff for every song. 3.4 5/8 I Want Your Love
At last I am free, I want your love och Le freak är bra låtar och eftersom de, i synnerhet de två förstnämnda, är långa upptar de en betydande del av skivan, vilket är bra. Då kan man bortse från stolpskott som Savoir faire och Happy man. Stark trea.
Some of this is probably fantastic for a disco setting, less successful when sitting in my home office. But songs like Le Freak? Those get you grooving everywhere.
Groovy:)) barfunk vibe
Fint, god vibe, lytter ik så meget til disco normalt :)
♫ Listening to "Le Freak (2018 Remaster)" by Chic (C'est Chic (2018 Remaster), 1978) ♫ ★★★
nice groove through all the songs..could be the same one
Disco was so fun and brought an energy that is unmatched in current times.
I forgot about this album. It wasn't as bad as i remember from when I was 5. Great guitar work in this album.
This might only score higher because it followed Young Americans by David Bowie. It's funky disco soul. Probably nothing to write home about.
Great Songs: Freak Out Good Songs: Savior Faire, Happy Man, I Want Your Love, Sometimes You Win, (Funny) Bone Mid Songs: Chic Cheer, At Last I Am Free Bad Songs:
I guess for Disco music it’s ok.
Good vibes, solid background music. Pretty forgettable though. I think it's only included on this list because of the iconic "le freak," nothing else really stands out.
Correct, quelques classiques, trop pop pour moi.
I like this one. 3 stars.
This was alright. I won't listen again but I can't hate on le freak.
I didn’t really care for it.
Enjoyable to listen to while grocery shopping Songs 4-7 were my favourites
Funky bass lines
So very cultured. Disco sucks. This one skirts that line too closely for me. That being said, this one has some decent moments. Just not my thing
Sounds like cocaine and rollerskates
Groovy but a bit repetitive
Sometimes, I just, I just gotta dance
Disco is cool but the Chic Chant took way too long
3.5 stars. Enjoyable disco vibes
Completely fine.
Nile Rodgers is pretty amazing. He was involved with a whole bunch of fantastic projects over the decades. It's wild to think that it more or less all started here. I have a 45 single of Le Freak in my garage... which I bought when I was ten, in fifth grade, with my own allowance money.
That was so fun!
Initially was non plussed about getting this. But the first 5-6 tracks were awesome. Really great feel and rhythm. Last few tracks kinda lost me. Also spent some of the listen trying to figure out who sampled the songs….a lot seem to have!
3.5
Don't really got strong feelings on this one either.
groovy
I really loved the highlights of this album, and at its best I could see it being a five, but there are so many minutes of this album that feel frankly wasted. They let a loop play out for entire tracks with not a ton of variation. If I boiled thus down to just what I really line, it’s probably just a 15 minute album.
This made me think I like disco more than I think I do. It was kind of mellow but super fun, I would feel safe if a bar was playing this
At first I thought the opening was amazing, such a funky bass line, but nothing really happens after that. "Chic Cheer" just keeps going without much progression in the instrumentals or vocals. "Le Freak" is a classic, though I’m not a fan. Solid disco album overall though almost all songs could have been shorter especially "At Last I Am Free", but there are funkier records from that era. 7/10.
DISCO Best Song: Le Freak Rating: 5.0/10 Stars: 3
Decent disco, definitely not my favorite but a few solid songs makes this above average
Its kind of soul, jazz album that i know only one song le freak 3/5
Come for "La Freak" but stay for the finest funky disco Nile Rodgers could dream up. Now, everybody struuuuuut....
Le freak
3/5
Not a disco guy, but I can see why this is popular. It's fun, probably great to dance to (I imagine "Le Freak" has come on at a wedding I was at), and some of the instrumentation was pretty great. Enjoyed more than I thought I would.
Pretty good. Iconic songs.
If I had been alive when this album came out, I probably would've gone crazy for Le Freak. I agree with other people that the songs are twice as long as they should be. There's only a solid 20 minutes of material in here and then another 20 minutes of either drawn out instrumentals or simple repetition. Le Freak - 4.5/5 The rest of the album - 3/5 Overall - 3.5/5
3.5 stars
Sophisticated R&B compositions and orchestra, iconic guitar groove! I'd say people went freak dancing on the hit song in late 70's
Oh man. This was a real let down. I only know the hits and it turns out that's all there is to know. The rest was filler.
Decent disco. A little slow for me
It's obviously a classic funk album. Seminal. But too well-known; I've heard some of those songs so many times before I heard the album. And some of it is a little too smooth for me. Respect it for the position it holds and influence it had on music - but not a big lover of it.
Very chic. Favorite track: Sometimes You Win
Some iconic guitar and bass licks on this thing, had a real good time listening to this one. Chic are quite weak vocally though, and ‘At Last I Am Free’ is too long of a slow ballad and really drags the album down.
Better than I remember
super fun. super CHIC!
bring me my maribou boa -- STAT!
Enjoyed this way more than I expected
Le Freak I Want Your Love At Last I Am Free
Overall: 3/5 A disco funk album full of groovy tunes and soulful guitar work. "Le Freak" is the standout track, while instrumental track "Savoir Faire" demonstrates the band's musicianship. Guaranteed to lift your spirits, but some songs to tend to drag on for a while with the same repeated rhythm and vocals. Chic Cheer - 2.5/5 Le Freak - 5/5 Savoir Faire - 4.5/5 Happy Man - 3.5/5 I Want Your Love - 4.5/5 At Last I Am Free - 3/5 Sometimes You Win - 2.5/5 (Funny) Bone - 2/5
Fun jams. So many samples from this album.
This is making me want to go to the rollerskating place
Good disco, but the slow songs are drags
I'm really glad I didn't live through disco. You already know exactly what this album is going to sound like before you put it on. Let's leave it relegated to the realm of furniture warehouse commercials. But seriously, C'est Chic is ok. It's definitely not my style, but it's fun. The guitar playing is pretty nice and the basslines are funky. Lyrics are cheesy and mostly peppy but I guess that's what you want in disco dance tracks. The album shines on its instrumentals and when the tempo is high; their slower jams didn't really do it for me (looking at you, "At Last I Am Free"). Chic is responsible for the few disco standards you have absolutely heard many many times over the years, so they were certainly influential in the genre. Standouts for me were "Le Freak," "Savoir Faire" - a really nice instrumental - and "(Funny) Bone." I came into this listen fully expecting to give this a low rating, but it surprised me a little. I wouldn't really listen to much of this over again, but it's a solid 3/5 album.
An interesting disco entrant to the list. This has that big hit Le Freak, but under this album and not known to the world is that there's a secret really good guitar album in here. The guitar solo throughout Savoir Faire was really impressive. Beyond that a lot of the songs can seem repetitive, but I'm sure it is a product of the time because these songs were made for disco dancing. Alright album
This band didn’t ring any bells at first, but the second track immediately put a smile on my face. Definitely a fun disco sound and theme for the album.
Try not to dance when you listen to this. It’s fun, funky, pure 70s disco pop. A few songs go on a little long but overall a good album.
Nile Rogers guitar is all over this I think. Cool 70s bass as it’s a disco record. Enjoyed it and would listen again.
The overriding emotion listening to this is disappointment. Maybe I was expecting too much bearing in mind Nial Rogers and Chic are still touring to rave reviews. Yes it's ok. But I wanted more. Formulaic bass (great bass it may be) and rhythm guitar. Most tracks do their thing. And then they hang on. And on a bit longer..I totally get that this is a dance record, but even on a dance floor I don't want to be strutting my thing to 3 minutes of repeating outro. Le Freak and I Want Your Love (love the tubular bells by the way) are enduring classics (and even these versions overstay). The rest is...
fun
not bad. first time exposure to this disco record.
I'm a slut for a good bass line and this album may as well be titled Sick Bass All The Way Through. Well, not on 'At Last I Am Free'. That track is just lame.
A little bit lightweight, could have used a few more tunes of the quality of Le Freak, which is fab. 2.5
It’s not bad, but even for a disco record, which is admittedly one of my favorite genres, this is pretty barebones and the energy is mild. Not turned off to it I’ve just heard a lot better
Solid gold disco bangers up front, seriously runs out of juice by side 2, ends up lasting only about as long as I would at Studio 54
We finally arrive at the disco era! This was just sort of OK - Le Freak is clearly one of the all-time great dance grooves, and I Want Your Love is pretty good, but most of the rest of this album didn't do too much for me. I'm giving it two stars just for the bass playing alone which is pretty phenomenal, and another star for Nile Rodgers being a songwriting and producing legend, but there's too much filler for extended song durations, especially on the slow songs, for me to love this as an album.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Great instrumentation, especially on guitar and bass, make up for some fairly boring, repetitive songs. All the disco haters of the time were maybe a little too hard on bands/artists like this. I had only heard "Le Freak" (over and over) in the 70's and on but "I Want Your Love" is a really good song (though it goes on way too long).
I wasn't around in the late 70s, but the whole "Disco Sucks" moment just seems really stupid, and likely straight up racist. Disco kind of rules, actually. The slow numbers do nothing for me, but the upbeat dance songs are a familiar formula, find a great groove and stick to it. You can hear clearly how much this sound influenced acts like Daft Punk. A full record is probably not the best way to listen, a disco club 50 years ago obviously is, but overall i liked it
Fun funky music. But how often are they going to mention their own name in their songs?>
Just fantastic, glorious, funky music
6/10. Fun. Le Freak is good
very funky, good funky mood
C'est tight et le son est magique mais leur premier album est supérieur. 3.49 étoiles
This is a Nile Rodgers masterclass. He's one of the best to ever do it, and alongside Bernard Edwards, they're one of the best pairs to ever do it. Their respective guitar and bass interplay across this album is tight, seems like they never miss a note or beat. As technically savvy as they are, I'm not a big fan of the song structures and lyrics. It's disco. Most songs are similar, have cliched lyrics, feature cheesy string arrangements, and are a bit long so everyone can keep dancing. It's better than nearly all disco I've heard, but it's still not my thing unless I'm in a rare mood. Stand out songs are "Le Freak", "Happy Man", and "I Want Your Love", while the rest are a bit forgettable. Rodgers/Edwards are 5-star players, but the songs are 2-star.
Classic
reminds me of where I was in the 70's
Not my favourite genre but respect the disco vibes!
Fun funky album, high energy throughout, lots of soul in the music
Disco. Le Freak, I Want Your Love, and Chic Cheer are all hits of the era. This is classic disco music - syncopated rhythms, funk sensibilities. Savoir Faire is a nice instrumental guitar piece. Niles Rodgers brings a lot to the table on this album. Other notables include Happy Man.
FUNK
Not as good as Risque
INSTANT groove. I can only hear Faith Evans "Love Like This" on the first track which is a good thing. Can't add anything that hasn't already been said about Le Freak, but good to hear in the context of listening to the whole album. I realize how much of their sound is not really in singing a traditional vocals but more-so the group vocals just consistently nailing a great hook and chorus. The music has enough to keep you engaged and it's all so dancy I don't think it would matter, I just see people dancing to these records at Studio 54. A fun listen overall, but one I'd love to sample more than anything. I want your love already sounds like a groove loop ready to be chopped up anyways. You see why Daft Punk came back to this record.
2025-09-23: I listened to this album distractedly at night. The music felt easygoing and I think it helped me wind down somewhat. However, I did find the song length made them a little repetitive, at least when I tried listening a little more attentively at the beginning. Perhaps in a more optimistic day I might have raised the score to a 4.
Funky stuff
To my ears the quintessential disco. Not my standard fare, but as far as poppy stuff goes this has a good beat and appeal. The main knock is how repetitive the songs are. 3/5
FREAK OUT :music_notes: Pretty fun, very repetitive thou 3 i guess ?
80% vamp
Funk and disco together, with a fantastic bass throughout. Disco has a bad name, though each instrument in these songs when taken alone is really impressive.
This definitely captures a moment in time/vibe. I swear they are contractually Obligated to say chic in every song. Or they get paid by the chic
Nile Rodgers is the man! Enjoyed the album but was expecting more.
On my -100 to 100 patented scale it was like 20.
Yea love it Screams 90s comfort in anger. I need to actually go though the album and better understand.
Funk/disco isn’t really my scene, but this is a fun record. Some really good, danceable tunes, loved a lot of the guitar work.
This album definitely proves that disco does not suck. In fact, disco actually can be very fun when it's done well. Giving this album a rating was a bit tough because it succeeds at almost everything it set out to do, but disco music does lose some of its shine when listened to outside of a dance club. There were a few times where the songs felt repetitive, like they could've either been cut down or extended in a more varied way. Even so, I couldn't help but dance around while I listened, and I do think the production and energy were full of life. Parts of this album were downright corny and kitchy, but you know what? Those were some of my favorite moments. The fun here was palpable, and in the end, my desire for a disco resurgence was only strengthened.
Gets a bit repetitive, but you can't deny how funky it is.
Funky in a way I actually dig. I think I like funk more when it can fade into the background. Lyrics more as tone than statement.
Oh, it's that song. Actually not bad overall. 3.25
I said this about the other CHIC album we had, but this bass playing is incredible. It is by faaaaaar the best thing on the album. The guitar playing is also pretty great, but the melodic repetition of the other instruments makes it pretty tough for me to focus and stay locked into the music. "Savoir Faire" is kind of the biggest culprit of this. "Le Freak" is an incredible song, and I do like this album. I just wish that I could love it. I end up having a good time, just disappointed. Favorite Song(s): Le Freak
I like disco usually but couldn't get into this album as much
Kinda underwhelming, some great baselines and overall tracks, but most of it feels like fluff and for a disco record it's not that fun. The interesting and best part comes from the originality of the construction of the album, the first part implying a live and the last part Funny Bones (mvp of the album) being without singing, just laughs, the radio presenter and sounds is very very cool.
While familiar with a couple of the cuts, I had never heard this album in its' entirety. I enjoyed it overall, with a couple of these clearly well known hits.
Didn’t really care for it but there were a few good songs
Disco with elements of funk and r&b. While most of this music seemed disposable, Chic are still worthwhile
Songs are long and repetitive, but are funky and catchy.
Has some classic songs
Ok
very much enjoyed
Too many soul/funk albums recently, my rating is biased. But it's not bad. The instrumentals are great.
Decent disco.
Pretty fun. First handful of songs are a blast. Kinda loses steam in the second half. I get why it's included, there's some all time bangers on this things, but I feel like listening in the album format isn't really the way to experience it
Sheesh Chic, c'est chic. I suppose it is a bold move to put an instrumental after the big single of the album. And the album never recovered from that. Le freak is a banger, but the rest isn't up to par.
Go disco, men inte så varierat album
This album is primarily disco, and was released at the height of the disco era. There are a few slower tracks which are forgettable. I wonder how many times I’ve heard “Le Freak” in the last 47 years, probably thousands. Also I wonder how this album made it onto the list - maybe selected just to represent disco music.
Somehow I always imagined 'Le Freak' came out in the early 90s, but I don't know why I thought that since it sounds plenty 70s, what with the disco of it all. The album cover looks cool, kinda like a soundtrack to a tie-in novel about the movie adaptation of the board game Clue. I always like a stylin' all lowercase track listing. Overall the hit single is a good representation of how the album sounds. I like it fairly well -- good energy, no annoying noises (=more keys and horns than guitar), a healthy pace. A bit repetitive but that's not necessarily a negative. One of my favorites of the week; it's a high 3, but not quite a 4. Highlight: Whenever they say the band name in the songs (which is often; Jason Derulo must have trained at L'académie Chic), the title '(funny) bone' Lowlight: 'Chic Cheer' (really what is happening here? I'd prefer either no vocals or a lot more vocals. Hate a sparing vocal)
good shit - not really my thing but i still had a fun time :3
Chic, C'est Chic ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Three stars because much of the dance music we have or at least rhythm-backed tunes that allow dancing owe it to the disco era. Some pleasing stuff on here. I think for disco era I'd have to hear Moroder to give it 4 stars.
Le freak is classic. Mostly alright fun album for being disco music. One song felt painfully slow, I think it was 'at last I am free'
Bruno Mars traveled through time. Such energetic music!
Back in the day, the Onion used to run a parodic column by Smoov B. Listening to Chic was like the finely crafted perfect groove disco version of Smoov's column: I mean this totally as a compliment. Sure some weak songs and run longs, but a real pleasure.
literally the only albums i have gotten from this generator so far (almost 300 albums in) with french titles are the ones that i got while i was in montreal. the algorithms are listening
Le Freak is a classic, and I’d never heard Savoir Faire before, which was excellent. But some of these songs go on for a bit too long without variation
it's an okay-plus album
Histórico, muy agradable pero repetitivo hasta el aburrimiento
One commercially massive hit, one sleeper hit, and a handful of slightly repetitive forgettable songs. 6/10
fun album.
Similar to my experience with the Sister Sledge album - this is a very fun, often quite breezy album if not quite for me. The standout though was Savoir Faire - an instrumental that really surprised me in how much I enjoyed it.
Nice disco listening with some classics. A bit monotonous for me.
Classic within the disco scene, nothing that really grabs my attention
Pop classic
Le Freak is pretty iconic, yeah. The rest of the album is... surprisingly forgettable, sadly. I think it's nice lounge music, but it's unremarkable in its constantly repeating rhythms and lyrics. I wouldn't mind it in the background - but as a standalone activity, listening to this album is rather boring in my opinion. Disappointing, really.
A bit basic funky/R&B, but very tight and groovy. Fun listen, but probably won’t return.
funky album, has that freak song but also some bangers
It's slick, elegant and pleasant. However, every song goes on a couple minutes longer than it should, and since the songs here are quite simple, it results in this short album feeling longer.
a couple classics that unfortunately are much better than what the rest of the album has to offer
It was fun, sure, but I just wasn’t really feeling the repetition so common throughout the whole album.
Some good songs but it's all weird
Standout hits are that for a reason but lots of filler.
Is this the sort of album and music I’d choose to listen to? No! Can I appreciate that it’s great at what it does? Absolutely. A disco classic with some great tunes. Just because it’s not really my cup of tea I can still appreciate it as an album.
Enjoyable funky disco. Songs went on too long mind.
This is forget-your-worries dance music, and people always need that. "Le Freak" is of course a classic, and I appreciate CHIC's place in disco and pop-music history. It's not something I'll necessarily revisit—"(Funny) Bone" is a weird way to end this album—but it was a fun listen.
Two memorable songs, fine otherwise.
I mean yeah dude. le freak c’est literally chic. for the most part i enjoyed this - I got bored of at last i am free, i do recognize the repetitive nature of the song is just a part of the genre. all the other songs were so solid for me - everything else is so well tied together, but not overproduced, and you really can’t go wrong with disco. HUGE fan of the saxophone on sometimes you win. i think i just like saxophone. funny bone is kind of an insane song; ‘the whole world’s a circus but don’t you be the clown!’ is funny though.
Chic have some great tunes, some of them are found on this album.
Now this is groovy! So danceable and hard to sit still to. Beats are great. Met in NYC. Apparently Le Freak was originally written as Fuck Off.
A few hits but it dragged on in some spots
Wow, what a vibe this was.
While it isn't something I'll necessarily listen to everyday, it's undeniably awesome.
Le freak is such a standout. The rest of the album is competent but not generally exciting. The guitar work is impressive throughout. Low point was trying to get through all of at last I am free.
Suprisingly good
No joke chic
I liked this one too but again I don't think any of the songs would be something I would listen to regularly except I did like the instrumental in savoir faire! The only song I knew before listening to the whole album was "le freak". Very groovy!!
I knew and liked Le Freak and I Want Your Love. There were too many instrumental parts which as I’ve previously stated in past reviews I am not a fan of.
Le Freak is a total disco banger and the rest of the album is enjoyable enough.
Some interesting work and a couple of great songs and instrumentals on this album.
The singles are good but there are some very average tracks here too. The production is excellent and Bernard Edwards bass is the star of the show for me.
Early days disco
Not an album I would go out of my way to listen to again, but it was fun to hear from start to finish once. Like many other people said already, it's great background music, but not something that rewards detailed study. The guitar is nice and Le Freak is a banger, so three stars from me
3.2
Disco let’s gooooo 🪩
Actually enjoyed much more than I expected to - good feel good fun
Great musicianship and songwriting. Lyrics are kinda cheesy tho. Also, just not my thing. It's like body positive disco.
The bass and guitar are delightfully 80’s in the best way. I had a good time listening to each individual song but in my opinion they go for just a bit too long. Unlike many disco records, I didn’t get particularly bored during the run time.
Nile Rodgers has produced some of my favorite music but this album feels a little dated overall.
Listened to before: No Great production, absolutely danceable - There's just not much reason to listen to this outside of a disco.
probably good for dancing but not so much for listening
Repetitive 2.6
Fun, nice production
One star for Nike Rodgers, one star for Tony Thompson, one star for Le Freak. THREE STARS
Kind of upbeat 70s vibe Le freak is the fav Probably a 6/10
Pretty good, standard nice rodgers
Who knew that a security guard telling the band to "Ah, Fuck Off!" at the door of Studio 54 would inspire one of the most recognisable funk-disco tracks of all time. The rest of the album is well decent too!
Nile Rogers is one of those artists that is so bursting with talent, but I find almost everything sounds the same.
Nile Rodgers is the master of the perfectly innocuous jam. Legit enjoyed listening to "Le Freak" for the first time on purpose instead of on a school bus speaker or in some boutique from which I would purchase nothing. "At Last I am Free" is total torture tape material - a Branch Davidian would surrender his child bride by minute 5. The rest is solid statistical median good music.
we've all heard freak out! a billion times, but it's wroth remembering this is one of the most perfect songs ever-if you could hear this for the 1st time again you'd get goosebumps and be dancing jumping fist pumping whooping your butt off, it's a masterpiece. That's why they're on here - Niles is SO ARROGANT but he really did change things up - tidbit - 1st rap song ever sampled Chic's Good Times (rapper's delight), which Niles 1st heard on the radio!? but has since been credited on that song. Anyhooo this record bursts out of the gates but peaks with I want your love and the rest just fizzles out into mediocrity.
Listening to Le Freak after Chic Cheer...so much chic. It's been a long time since I've listened to "I Want Your Love". Honestly, this makes me want to rollerskate.
Surprisingly good! Varied and I wasn’t expecting that.
Neither the band nor the album meant anything to me. The genre description increased my interest in the album. This lasted for most of the first track. However, the music started to get on my nerves. So I moved on to Le Freak and I knew it. This is THE disco classic par excellence. Yes, it makes you want to dance. Even for me, who has never been to discos and doesn't like the music. But that's neither funk nor soul. So let's continue with the piece Savoir Faire. I liked it surprisingly well. That's funky. The track Happy Man was also quite funky. With I Want Your Love, the disco parts became too clear again. Then I stopped listening properly. I won't be listening to it again any time soon. 3/5
It’s a trip. It’s got a funky beat. And I can bug I it to it.
This disco/soul thing is not really my genre, but I did enjoy this at a certain level. It was nicely funky (especially the basslines), but the hooks and the repetitiveness of the lyrics and phrases did get a little out of hand a few times. I listened to it twice just to make sure I wasn't missing anything, but I came away from the second listen in about the same place as the first. It was good, but not amazing. I probably won't listen again. Three stars.
Vibey, but yeah
Good album.
Enjoyable. Funky.
Liked it.
C’est Chic is like getting dressed up to go somewhere fabulous, only to realise you’re mostly vibing in your own mirror. It’s classy, smooth, and effortlessly cool but not too cool to remind you it was born in the disco era, complete with glitter and occasional saxophone flirtations. "Le Freak" still struts into the room like it owns the place, and honestly, it kinda does. “I Want Your Love” is the slow-motion dancefloor moment where your drink gets warmer and your heart gets softer. That said, I didn't fall head over heels for every track. There’s a bit of filler sparkle tucked between the hits, like a designer jacket with one too many shoulder pads. Still, CHIC knows their groove, and even when they’re coasting, they’re coasting in diamond-studded roller skates. It’s not my go-to mood, but I get the appeal
Although this feels a lot like a one-hit wonder sort of band and album, even with the relatively popular single "I want your love" proving that "Le freak" wasn't the only flash in the pan, it's still a modestly fun disco listen (with some driving basslines). I liked it that the rest of the album doesn't sound utterly different from their two singles, but the other songs seem much more appropriate for background listening (especially the instrumentals like "Savoir faire"), and the slower ballad-types tend to drag it all down a bit.
I was surprised we got this and not their album Risque (which I now see is in my future). I enjoy their sound but not sure this album is 1001-worthy.
They don't make 'em like CHIC anymore, everyone's too cool these days, too image conscious. Need more freaks in the music biz.
Nice times and lyrics but not my style:))
Fun
disco basslines are the best basslines
It’s good. Kinda repetitive but nice music if you’re dancing or working or cooking.
Expected to like this more than I did, but it got a little samey. The groove is great, though.
This was a pleasant surprise in terms of a listening experience. The expectations per the initial Wiki and the name of the album and band, directed the mind to go into a bog-standard poppy funk. But, it ended up having some highlights like Le Freak, Happy Man and At Last I Am Free which ended up making this a decent listen. I think the start with Cheer was quite weak but picked up from there. I would rate this as a 3.5/5 but bumping it down to a 3.
Very good album. Super fun to listen to. A 3,8.
Has any other mainstream funk/pop album been as influential or referenced? Possibly, but it’s hard to think of what it would be. As fun today as it’s always been, though it suffers retroactively from the Nile Rodger’s Ubiquity Syndrome that means this album’s fingerprints are smeared over far too many artists and tracks.
Kort album van 6 nummer waarvan er minstends 3 verschillende versies van C'est Chic. Maar die zijn dan wel weer erg lekker
This is such a moment.
It's ok as background. Very consistent sound, which makes it a bit boring for me, I'm sure lots have sampled the tracks in there.
Not my favorite disco/funk but a fun listen overall!
Cutie little disco fun
Makes u dance but also gives some nice smooth instrumental … the vocals are kinda underwhelming but enjoyed it throughout
Un álbum bastante aceptable con un par de grandes hits.
Two standout tracks, Le Freak and I Want Your Love and while the rest of the album contains some polished disco cuts and ballads that will get folks moving I can't say they are that memorable. Difficulty genre to make an album out of but this is a pretty good standard and the playing or Rodgers and Edwards is top notch. Worth a listen.
Quick fun listen. Nothing I want to return to but enjoyed it.
это хорошие песни, но они невероятно затянуты.... тупо заебывает одну мелодию 7 минут слушать
The music is great. Production values are so high. So many artists have samples from this band that you feel like you’ve heard these songs even if you haven’t before. Overall, a good album, but a bit of pace could be added here and there. Base plods along quite a bit. Not great, but good.
Bernard Edwards is a major bass god, and Nile Rodgers is great at writing the riffs that ride over that rhythm. Chic lived up to their name, with urbane, sophisticated disco funk that continues to inspire musicians and is a foundation of hip hop sampling. None of that really speaks to this *album* though. This is a laboratory of sound and style and rhythm. This is a library of vamps and riffs. The album drags on like a long night at Studio 54. It's fun while it lasts, and you remember bits and pieces, but it's not meant for close concentration.
Peak disco. Felt a little long at times.
Classic disco
I love the groove and tempo of this record. I'm probably more into the vibe than any one song so it's only a 3 but worth listening to again.
grooves that go nowhere :(
It's not bad music, just didn’t hold my attention much (that might be my short attention span more than the album).
C’est Chic - CHIC Favourite - Savoir faire / Sometimes You Win Least favourite - At Last I Am Free Sometimes You Win is ripe for sports edits, imagine a a Luka or D Rose edit to that song 🔥 Overall 7.0/10 vibes were nice but it drags towards the ends of some tracks. Feels a little like a whole album of Stevie Wonder ’b’ tracks with some more guitar thrown in if that makes sense, but not in a pejorative way.
This album certainly serves its purpose well. It solid disco music as it’s very easy to dance to and its repetitive nature makes it predictable and reliable which is appreciated, but that also means that it has a tendency to drag if you’re just sitting down and listening to it. I’m not sure it’s something I’d listen to regularly, but I can appreciate it for what it is.
I did not finish it but it seemed to me like high quality background party music. I did not manage to grasp a specific idea or novelty if it was being communicated. Savoire Faire was quire good and unique though. I will keep it for the future when I need a vibe 👍🏻
it was truly c'est chic
6/10 There is an epic quality to the music here. I don't have the knowledge to understand how they can make every song sound like it's life or death. That being said it's a bit dated, not overly so. 6-16-2025
One obvious banger, the rest was fine
My second CHIC album. And honestly, it was exactly the same as the first. There really doesn’t need to be two on this list. Nevertheless, it’s a 3 for being listenable.
Pretty good.
A disco classic, well executed, with talented musicians. It's disco though (fun for dancing, not so much while sitting in your living room).
Imam vrlo podijeljeno mišljenje o ovom albumu. Da je sve nalik na le freak bila bih prezadovoljna. Čak i da je nalik na neke druge življe pjesme. U njima je bass i groove na nivou. Ali onda ima pola, ili možda više od pola albuma koji je isto ništa.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1001 ALBUMS - # 58 Everybody CHIC tonight! 🕺 I can get behind these grooves and the album gets the party going right off the bat with two of the most sampled tunes this side of the disco ball 🪩 Released at the height of the disco boom in 1978, C’est Chic is the second studio album by the American band Chic, formed by legendary producers and musicians Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. More than just a follow-up to their successful debut, this album cemented Chic’s reputation as the quintessential disco band, blending sophisticated production, irresistible grooves, and social commentary into a seamless sonic experience. The album became one of the most iconic records of the disco era and remains a gold standard is music production and arrangement. 🎧 Classic Track: Le Freak 🎧 Deep Cut Gem: Savoir Faire 🎧 Personal Favorite: Happy Man C’est Chic is sleek, confident, and dazzling from start to finish. Each track is a masterclass in arrangement—tight rhythms, lush string sections, and unforgettable basslines. At just under 40 minutes, it’s a compact yet endlessly rewarding listen. Few albums have had the reach and influence of C’est Chic. Beyond its immediate success, it has been sampled, studied, and celebrated for decades. “Le Freak” and “I Want Your Love” remain staples of disco compilations, DJ sets, and soundtracks. The album helped define the Chic Organization’s sound—a blueprint for dance music that valued groove, elegance, and emotion in equal measure. 🖼️ Album Artwork: 🥱 Rodgers and Edwards’ work here laid the foundation for modern pop and R&B production, influencing everyone from David Bowie to Beyoncé. In a genre sometimes dismissed for being superficial, C’est Chic proved that disco could be as artful and impactful as any other style.
More fun than I thought it would be.
Fine enough record, doesn’t really do a lot for me but it certainly doesn’t sound bad
Liked this better than I thought I would, and it’s more consistent than the other Chic album in that regard. Some of the songs are tedious, and disco ain’t my thing, but this was pretty solid overall. Properly 2.5 stars (would not revisit), but gonna round up for being pleasantly surprised.
delightful little disco album.
This is pretty good and there is some nice variation, even if it sometimes feels a bit goofy from a 2020s perspective. Favorite track: "Savoir Faire"
Chic again? Screw it. I'm down. I don't actually hate disco as much as others do. Quite the contrary, actually. I happen to enjoy it quite a bit, and C'est Chic is no different. However, I actually happen to prefer this album's followup, Risqué, by a considerable degree. I'm not sure why. I think, on a general level, Risqué is just a more balanced album with more standout elements. C'est Chic is a good blueprint for what a strong disco album can be, and Risqué is the album that utilizes it to its higher potential. Of course, C'est Chic is not without its praiseworthy elements. The songs here are all pretty good, with "Le Freak" being the obvious highlight. The writing here is a bit basic. I think that's what's holding this album back from a higher rating for me. I know music doesn't always have to be super thought-provoking, but this album does kind of feel repetitive in this regard and debatably others. Of course, the musical talent here is still respectable. Obviously, Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers deserve all the praise they can get, but the others provide good stuff. Shoutouts to Luther Vandross just for being here at all. C'est Chic is good, but it's the kind of album that can be improved upon. I know this because it was. High 3/5.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would.
I want disco-y goodness from Chic, so At Last I Am Free did nothing for me with it's slower vibe and repetitive lyrics. Pretty much everything else I really enjoyed though. Not sure it's an album I'll regularly return to, but Le Freak is such a classic track. I also enjoyed spotting all the song parts that other musicians subsequently sampled. This feels like another occasion I want a 1/2 star option, but as I don't, I'm going for 3/5
3.2
Liked it all except for At Last I Am Free which doesn't really go anywhere and is the longest track!! Probably a very strong 3
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Familiar with some Chic music and I've always enjoyed the bass grooves (active, but not overly busy to my ears). Overall like the music and production. Just find it unlikely that I'll ever spin it up in my own playlists.
This was a cute listen. I probably wouldn’t reach for it again but it was pleasant
I've always been a hard line disco sucks punk fan, and this album doesn't change that. It's full of cheese and the songs aren't always there, but the pocket is undeniable. Nile is a beast of course and the bass lines are huge. It hasn't converted me but I do have huge admiration and respect for the musicianship. More funk less gloss, then it'd be something special.
3.7
Disco is not my thing, but this feels like the epitome of it so I respect it.
Classic disco record. Fun, catchy tunes, great production, killer bass and guitars here and there. At the same time, there are repetitive, easily consumable songs that are often longer than they should be.
Classic disco. Not really my thing, but they are very talented.
Ok very funky
so repetitive. Great bass lines tho....
70s disco funk at it's finest
3,5
I think it's easy to forget just how much terrible music was churned out at the height of the world Disco craze in the 1970s. Next to that tsunami of chintz, Chic's attempt to bring a measure of substance to the genre is admirable. Certainly, the contemporary Neo-Disco trend owes a huge debt to Chic for their distinctive vibe and a fairly high standard of musicality. Unfortunately, outside of the legendary and irrepressible energy of "Le Freak", the album suffers from a bad case of forgettable songwriting. Looking back, this may be one of those albums that is more influential than strictly successful on its own merits. The band's rhythm section absolutely slaps, though. Two stars, plus one for "Le Freak".
3.5
I'm at a 3 for this. "Le Freak" is a cool song, but the rest kind of runs the gamut between okay and not very good.
3.5
A tour de force in the art of album unevenness. Runs the gamut from C’est Fantastique to C’est Weak, C’est Tragique and C’est Craptastique. Le Freak and I Want Your Love are two of the pearliest, supreme, pristine and powerhouse disco productions. Simply ace. The Fatman Scoop funk riff on Chic Cheer is also awesome but the actual song it turns into is pretty crappy. Savoire Faire is the most random bit of plain instrumental smooth jazz just to pad out the album a bit more. At Last I Am Free has an amazingly sensual and moody chord progression and vocal performance but with lyrics that basically amount to the title plus “I Can Hardly See In Front Of Me I Can Hardly See In Front Of Me” x1000, it kinda scoots way past its natural span as a song and continues into the distance for an apocalyptically long time. And (Funny) Bone is the crumbliest, lamest most filler way to end an album. So a very mixed bag overall. A few massive diamonds amongst the pig plop.
A fun inclusion today but something that feels more suited to being a dance track than something for your everyday playlists. That nature also made the album feel pretty repetitive over its kinda long runtime
Frankenstein musical parody film about raising disco from the dead but all he wants to do is make house music from chic samples.
It's fine. Some good rhythms and beats, but nothing especially noteworthy.
⭐⭐⭐
Solid album with a slightly overplayed classic.
This pretty funky and there's some classics on here just a little too much of the same
This was fine, I guess. So very 70's. If you like the song Le Freak, you may like this album since it all kind of sounds like that.
I don't know, it was fine, I just thought it would be funkier.
Pretty good. enjoyable funky instumentals, but some songs overstay their welcome
Felt a little bit pedestrian by my idea of disco. Le Freak bangs and I didn’t know it was from this album/group.
Nie bardzo mój styl, ale słuchało się całkiem przyjemnie
I remember this album from when I was young. Strangely, I found it sounded dated, even at the time. This, the Bee Gees, and the Village People were synonymous with the whole Studio 54/ Disco movement. It was very mainstream at the time.
Thought this was just going to be some random funk/disco album but then HEY I know this song! Pretty fun, and the part of me that once occasionally slapped a bass has to appreciate the rhythm section’s grooves here.
Groovy. Love a lot of the beats and bass work. Man, many of their songs just drag on way too long. Could trim almost 2 min from Le Freak IMO. Maybe I just don’t have the stamina or appreciate that turkeys impressing the ladies with their moves don’t want the beats to stop. I was so excited for (funny) bone because I assumed that was a not-so-subtle innuendo. Gonna have some great lyrics… I was quite disappointed finding out it was an instrumental 😞
It was fun, at the very least.
This would be a 4 but they said their own name 104 times before the third track.
a bit too repetitive for my tastes, but not too bad.
I thought this was just going to be a disco album all the way through, so I sniffed a bag of blow, put my roller skates on, and got ready to boogy. Savoir Faire threw me for a loop. Slow jam grooves. Great tune, and my favorite. Overall, the album was ok, with a couple of hit ones. Not enough to push it over the middle. 3.
Not bad
Really good background funk music, but not what I would queue up. The biggest song in this album is iconic tho
It's okay, not really my style.
I love CHIC but this didn't excite me
good dance album
Disco? Disco. Has a fun melody but tedium begins to set in quickly by the end of Le Freak. Hopefully the rest of the album doesn't sound the same... Ok, Savoir Faire does change up the beat a bit. This song is very Love Boat. Very cool song, actually.
O auge desse formato!
Decent background music
I liked it but I feel like the songs were all 2 minutes too long.
Glad discofunk.
"At Last I Am Free" no me gusta para nada. Sorpresas: "I Want Your Love" y "Sometimes You Win". Muy buenas guitarras rítmicas. Lo que más me gusto fueron algunas partes instrumentales, sobre todo la parte melódica de ciertos instrumentos. Muy buenos arreglos.
Etwas eintönig, aber macht Spaß
I never really understood the hatred dumped on Disco music. It's just an offshoot of R & B and Pop music specifically intended for dancing. I think the loudest voices against it just don't like anything popular simply because it is popular. Or maybe they're just racists who can't dance. Producers like Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rogers, and Bernard Edwards kept the message upbeat and the grooves funky as hell. The bass guitar alone on this album is nothing less than a masterclass. Disco was here for a good time, not a long time.
Very well done, funky stuff. Fun.
Didn't recognize the band or the album, but as soon as the 2nd sing hit, I got a wave of nostalgia. Pretty good stuff.
It Nile Rodgers. Great musicians. Never loved his songs.
A few that were cringy, but yes I still love it.
Le Freak and I Want Your Love are the obvious standouts, but the album is a fun time. Made for dancing. 3 Stars.
This was good music
MAN, I feel like dancing! If you don't feel the need to move your body and shift your feet after hearing the first two tracks, I'm sorry, but you must be dead inside. Like damn baby, I feel bad for you because this music makes the soul feel right. I'll be honest, the vibe does drop off quite a bit after the first two, but this is not to say that the album is bad. Nothing super memorable for me aside from Le Freak, Happy Man, and maybe Sometimes You Win. Give it a listen, though. Ciao!
Alright, a couple of great songs and some filler
