Reviews (page 10 of 12)

This was pretty nice, and Piece of My Heart is a classic for a reason. It didn't absolutely captivate me, but was enjoyable overall.

I like Janis and the band but I can’t help but think (and always have) that this is one of the most overrated classic albums ever.

Combination of the Two - 3 I Need a Man to Love - 5 Summertime - 3 Piece of My Heart - 4 Turtle Blues - 4 Oh, Sweet Mary - 3 Ball and Chain - 3 Roadblock - 3 Flower in the Sun - 3 Catch Me Daddy - 3 Magic of Love - 3

My Favorite Album of all time. You must own this LP if you consider yourself a real music fan. We played this entire LP at my Wedding and everyone danced til they could stand no more. If there was a "gone with the Wind" equivalent in Rock, this is it. Buy it Play it Buy another one after you wear it out!

Nostalgia trip.

Pari kovaa leiskautusta ja muuten mukavaa kuunneltavaa.

Hyvin kuljetti työpäivää, perushyvä.

It’s aight. Not much character to the album but I like the sounds.

I actually enjoyed the raspy voice on some of the songs. The album as a whole however was pretty average.

uneven but some parts are outstanding

Fun album. Never listened to Janice much before.

Impressions: Not a fan of the screeching. Favorite tracks: Ball and Chain Rating: 3/5

#42. It was alright, I guess. Her voice is a bit much at times. I suppose I never really got the hype about Janis Joplin. 3/5: acceptable

It's no wonder that Janis went on to have a solo career. Nothing against the backing band, but the tracks where Janis' vocals are allowed to shine (Piece of My Heart, duh) are just phenomenal. The other tracks are fun too, just not as creative or interesting. It's also not often I talk about the album art, but R. Crumb doing the art for this album definitely secures it as a time machine to the late 60s. Looking at his cartoon images transports me back 60 years, complete with racist caricatures. Favorite tracks: Piece of My Heart, Flower In the Sun

Janis joplin is a delight. I wouldn't hear this music often though

Pretty solid album

There was a some cool blues and rock on this but it didn’t really do it for me. Don’t think I’d go out of my way to listen again. -B

I love the raspy female lead vocals. I’ve never heard a female blues singer of this rasp. Though, the songs do get repetitive pretty quickly.

Janis Joplin got an insane voice that's crazy, some good songs

I didn't realise that song came from this band

Janis’ voice is iconic. Summertime was interesting. Every song went on way too long.

A trip into my boyfriend’s thought process when looking for music that makes you nostalgic even though you’re 20 and you were a concept in 1969. Also very good for when you’re cooking. Not really my genre I would say

Hadn't heard the full album and sent me down a rabbit hole about Janis Joplin. Is she the female Jim Morrison?

great energy, but it’s not my genre and the age shows - even if it sounds great for its time.

Everything psychedelic is present in this record and it is a perfect depiction of this style of music. I just wish I liked this style of music, jam band noodling is just not my thing.

Another typical Mafia 3 soundtrack...

Really sounds like the 60s, quite cool to hear Janis Joplin starting out, great energy too

enjoyable but not mind-blowing. The recording is not my favourite - feels a bit 'life show soundboard'-y to me. Joplin is obviously a talent... but also a bit grating after an entire record. Lots of great instrumentation in here - this was a cool band.

Yep, good. JJ has a cracking set of lungs, and is able to really display power and vulnerability. The band are talented, although at times I think it left me a little cold somehow. This might be the most I've oscillated between a 3 and a 4, and if Joplin's reading this, I apologise for coming down on the side of three.

“I guess i’m just like a turtle” This album excited me because of Janis Joplin’s name on the album, but after reading the history of this band, how they brought her to the light and she left them in the dust, I have a little bit less respect for Mrs. Joplin. For the first couple songs, I was really enjoying the album, and T4- Piece of my heart was such a great song to be able to hear in the context of the album (playlist song). another notable track is T5- Turtle blues (nice 12-bar blue). After 6 or so songs, everything started blending together with the Joplin vocals, although I really enjoyed the inspired guitar solos throughout the album. Album could’ve been a 4, and started that way, but I know i’d never listen to it again. 3/5

The sound seems to be representative of the period, though I had never heard of this band. I recognized Janice Joplin's voice and that is how I learned that she started as part of a band.

Psychrock? Vreemd man. FAVO: Summertime, Piece of my heart

Good tunes!

This is an ok album carried by Janis Joplin as the lead singer. Her voice is obviously super unique, and there's moments where it's great, though I don't know that I'm a massive Janis Joplin fan overall. I think I appreciate what's going on here, while also being somewhat indifferent for the most part. Sound-wise, it was much more bluesy than I expected. They also did this thing where a few of the songs have added background noise to sound like they're live recordings, this was a bad choice. The cover art is kind of fun though. Favorite song: Piece of My Heart Other: I Need a Man to Love, Summertime

Classic, but not my everyday listening

3,85!!!

Piece of my heart was great

Great high/trip music. Love Janice Joplin's voice. Gets a little boring after a few songs.

Pretty fun record, even in Janice Joplin's voice is a bit OTT for me at times. Favourite tracks: Combination of the Two, Oh Sweet Mary.

You can almost taste them.

"the band and producer incorporated recordings of crowd noise to give the impression of a live album" pssht at least have the guts to put on a laugh track

Definitely has a bunch of familiar classic rock songs. For some reason didn't know this is where some of Janis Joplin's famous tracks came from. It's good, would be good if in a classic rock mood or building a classic rock playlist. Joplin's voice is pretty incredible.

Janis' voice is otherworldly. Just didn't click with a lot of the tracks on this one.

It’s fine. Yes, her voice is amazing, and the band is good, but this is another album I’m burnt out on due to overexposure to its most popular song.

Interesting album but not my taste

I like the bluesy feel of this album. Can see why Janis and Pigpen got along so well. Her vocals are truly unique, but sometimes get tiring. 3.5/5 Would listen again

had het graag een 3.5 gegeven

Rock n’ roll 🤟🏼🤟🏼niet mijn muziek

The real deal rock sound it's pretty nice. This album cover is also pretty nice.

Janis Joplin is something else, the raw energies are great, but it’s down to a couple of tracks (Summertime & Piece of My Heart) to hold this album and it’s just not enough to render it truly great.

A pretty mediocre album. Some obviously famous songs, but pretty boring otherwise. 5/10

This was one album where the live versions didn’t fail to exceed the studio versions. Overall Janis Joplin had a sensational voice and sounded great however it was recorded. This album was 60s rock with a mix of psychedelic and lo-if sounds. This was counterculture enveloped in an album. Overall very solid. 6.9.10 (nice)

"Piece of My Heart" is a classic. Other than that just an ok album.

not the type of music I enjoy. got pretty boring

Bästa låt: Summertime, I News a man to love

Alright - liked Summertime

Janis has quite the unique voice and I’m glad I got the chance to experience it.

Not bad, but not great

This feels like a record specifically done to highlight Janie Joplin, in particular her vocal chops. She has so much personality, charisma, and passion in her voice here with how she shouts, screams, croons, and just the wild almost unhinged nature she has. It's really something to behold, but it did become a bit grating at points like near the end of Ball and Chain. The actual music here is alright, lot of blues, jazz, and psychedelia mixed together often with some crunchy guitar tones. I did really enjoy the classic 16 Bar Blues on Turtle Blues.

Not the strongest album from a creative perspective but well-performed and passionate. I expected Janis Joplin to have a big ballsy showstopper voice, and she does obviously do that, but I was impressed by her range and sensitivity. The band is solid too with some great blues guitar. Not an all-time great but a worthy inclusion. Best song: Piece of My Heart

Cool jam, not much to dislike. Not exactly my style but I did enjoy it.

First half was a little sedate with old pop songs but really liked the second half oh sweet Mary and ball and chain jumped out

Sounds like a Janis Joplin album. Good stuff.

Okay, listen. I love the music, love the jams. Janis Joplin was incredibly talented and being such a big fan of Remi Wolf it’s really cool making the connection in their style. However, Janis’s voice is really something you have to be in the mood for. It’s perfect for vibing with friends & smoking, or going to a show, seeing her live would have been incredible, but I listened to this album while I was highly caffeinated and getting angry at something at work so it was just not a good time for it lol. But I can recognize that in the right setting this album is great.

3.5 stars Janis Joplin's powerful vocals bump this up a bit from being more run of the mill rock/psychedelic rock. Standout is leadoff "Combination of the Two" and "Pieces of My Heart."

a fun jammy time, I personally don’t love it when janis goes full rasp with it

Joplin, psychedelic, took a little piece of my heart

So we just gonna ignore the racist caricature cartoon on the cover?

Yeah this was really good! Spunky and fun

Joplins voice started to grow on me. Puece of my heart tipped the balance. The original but best tho I'd never heard it before only just a 3

This was good. I liked the game love feel. But Joplin isn't my thing. I'm glad this is on the list.

Very good

I know it's Janis and all but I didn't really enjoy that album to be honest

I'm not a big fan of Janis's vocals, but the album wasn't bad at all, especially the side B.

Some good songs but I’m not a fan of Joplin’s screeching.

Using recorded crowd reactions to simulate live album is an interesting concept. Nonetheless it's just typical '60s rock album.

I like Janis Joplin, but this album didn't do much for me.

Great Janis Joplin vocals!

I think this is ok but pretty similar to jefferson airplane to me

I enjoy the high energy.

It took me a long time to get used to Janis Joplin's voice, but now I kind of like it. There are some good songs on this album, but also just a lot of yelling over repetitive music.

This is eerily similar to the other Janis Joplin album on here when it comes to my opinions, that being that there's one especially notable song with the rest of it being not all too notable for me. I did like this album more, as some of the rock reminded me of other groups I enjoy and the such, but the fake "live" sound did start to annoy me near the end, and songs generally felt relatively similar. None of this makes this a bad album, because I can see the importance here, it just isn't my cup of tea musically.

discovering that janis joplin sounds like marge simpson with a bit of angus young at certain points was the highlight of my day. this was most noticeable to me on I need a man to love and summertime. beyond that, though, I'm not sure how many of these I'll come back and listen to. favorite tracks: summertime, piece of my heart

Joplin in her prime. A lot better than expected.

A good musical representation of the time

good moments

- more classic rock - A good Zeppelin-esque sound - Great guitar work that blends well with the vocals - I Need a Man to Love, Piece of My Heart

love some janis joplin. that cover is yikes tho

Ok blues rock album with great instrumentation, particularly the guitar playing which is the highlight. The songs themselves are pretty good I just did not like Joplin’s vocals at all. They’re very bluesy and incredibly raspy, they’re unique just not my thing. The production was strange too, it had a live feeling and a few of the songs were actually recorded live. I think this was less of a factor than the vocals though.

Have to appreciate how strong Janis Joplin's voice was. Literally raw energy

Helt ait

Nice enough background rock 'n' roll, but unremarkable. Another 3*, I think.

Áhugavert fyrir Janis Joplin fólk.

I know this is sacrilege, but I think I really do not like Janis Joplin's vocal style. I don't mind raspy or gravely, and her baseline is totally fine! But it's specifically when she goes for high notes, her voice gets really *breathy* in addition to all that and it hits my ears badly. Like there's having a singing style, and then there's "this sounds like these notes are out of your range and you keep trying to go for them anyway"

Very cool to hear JJ on another album than her famous one. I saw in the description that they incorporated recordings of crowd noise to give the impression of a live album, for which it was subsequently mistaken by listeners. I find that really funny especially given how much I'm not a fan of live albums, I did have to do a double take. This was a fun album to kick off the week, felt very in the vein of Janis and also similar to Jimi Hendrix and just that whole woodstock feel.

Technically our second Janis Joplin project. Not sure which came first; I could look it up, but I'm gonna treat it as a chicken or the egg conundrum. They've got a solid sound here, and her vocals are grating as ever (in a good way). It's certainly not on the same level as Pearl for me, but can't deny there's a bit of heat here. Favorite tracks: I Need a Man to Love, Piece of My Heart, Oh Sweet Mary. Album art: Really love the style of this one, like a Mad magazine compilation or something. A couple racist cartoons on here though which is troubling. 3/5

Top 3: 1) Summertime 2) Piece of My Heart 3) Ball and Chain Bottom 3: 1) Oh, Sweet Mary 2) Combination of the Two 3) I Need a Man to Love

Never been a big fan of joplin's voice but this a great summation of psychedelic SF. Aged pretty well.

A lot of famous jams but I never really got into Joplin. I have a love/hate with her voice... Hate is a strong word I guess.

Good ol (blues) rock, nothing beats that

I just don't like JJ's voice. An unpopular opinion, I know, but it is what it is.

i mean janis joplin is undeniably great but this just did not do it for me sorry

Toad lickingly face melting entry into the album with Combination of the Two which I remember fondly from the Fear and Loathing soundtrack. Janis has the grit and soul to bring this sucker home and make a two pack a day smokers throat feel sore. Really good album.

Great live performances. Amazing voice

It was alright. I knew some of the songs. I am indifferent to Janis Joplin but thankfully Mercedes Benz was not on this album because that song is excruciating. I was surprised that I wasn't overly annoyed with the album.

Good stuff, defiantly a chill rock typa album. Janis Joplin's vocals are ITTTTTTTTTTTT

Cool hearing the hits from Joplin, but was meh about most of the musicality

Singer kind of reminds me of Robert Plant. Music is bluesy, kind of Allman brothers vibe. Very 70s. Good but very standard

Janis is the draw here for me. Without her, they'd be a competent blues band but nothing to catch my interest. But you know...it's Janis. Her voice, and that definitive live version of "Piece of My Heart"--classic vocal blues. At 37 minutes, this album is not a minute too short.

blues psych rock classic. Average for today's standards.

HL: "Piece of My Heart", "Oh, Sweet Mary", "Summertime" February 18, 2023

This is just on here for Piece of My Heart, which, fair. A lot of the other tracks had the feeling they were made up on the spot. A cool time capsule I guess. My favorite part was at the end when the guy was promoting “The Who, from England”

Not a huge fan of Janis

This album is part of my cd collection, but I am not a big fan of this group. Just like those Jefferson Airplane albums or Joplin solo, the music has classic status, but it is simultaneously a bit boring and exhaustive to listen to: Musically these blues/psychedelic rock songs are not always so interesting (it is not Jimi Hendrix say). On the plus side: once you get into the music again and ignore some of the over-the-top elements, it is not bad of course, and in this case: Piece of my Heart is a perfect example of how an interpretation of a classic song can truly exceed the original version.

Nice blues-rock album but I prefer Janis Joplin solo.

I really dug the blues rock vibe for a while but it started to feel kind of samey near the end. Janis Joplin's voice is such a powerhouse that it's no wonder she's as iconic as she is. Really serviceable early blues rock who's influence can still be heard today. 3

3.5 Album cover hasn’t aged particularly well, though the art style is really cool. I didn’t go into this expecting a whole lot since I’m not the biggest fan of the Janis Joplin stuff I’ve heard (see: Pearl), but right off the bat, I found Combination of the Two more fun than anything of hers I’ve heard prior. While Pearl felt like a take on soul and blues, this album is a burst of pure rock n roll energy, a genre I feel her voice and presence is much better suited for. The production isn’t quite as clean here, but that’s rock n roll baby!! I didn’t even realize Piece of My Heart was done during her time with The Holding Company till listening to this, but considering the sound of the track, it makes a lot of sense in hindsight. I had also kind of forgotten about the song, but this was a nice reminder that it’s actually a pretty quality track. So, probably a hot take, but I think I can confidently say I enjoy Joplin’s time with the Holding Company more than her solo career. In fact, I really wasn’t even sold on her until I heard this. You can definitely tell she’s carrying the group (Oh, Sweet Mary is instantly escalated from a generic rock song to iconic when she jumps in on vocals), but the musical backdrop provided does wonders to enable her performance. Tripping on 60s drugs during the Summer of Love while listening to this stuff live sounds like an absolutely incredible experience. Favorite songs: Combination of the Two, Piece of My Heart, Ball and Chain

Cool Crumb cover, but cohesiveness eluded me on first listen. The Holding Company reminds me of the Sugarcubes: Well-known frontwoman, middling impact band album. It would surprise me if I need to listen more carefully for Joplin's voice, but it didn't rise above the variable-as-skillful playing.

3/5. A pretty good blues psych album. Janis really stands as the key component here but despite the uniqueness there, there are only a few that are good. But those ones are really good.

Black face on the album cover.... hmmm... still a great album and man can Janis sing!

Bold but not my cup of tea.

Janis Joplin can sing alright. And on this record you can hear the same loving obsession with black roots music that fueled much of '60s rock. One foot in traditional blues and the other kicking towards psyche. It's the classic rock blueprint, fresh off the press.

Smells like 60s but still surprisingly fresh.

Janis's voice is iconic, but I prefer Pearl. I see the appeal of the rough-around-the-edges production, but it's a little too rough.

Interesting to hear Janis Joplin in such a raw set of recordings. The "fake liveness" of the album is gimmicky and bad, but it was the 60's.

I enjoyed most of this quite a bit. Love the bluesy rock. Janis screeching got a bit weary after a while though.

Definitely a classic but a bit too raucous for me.

We all know the classics but I thought the rest of the album was pretty forgettable. Also hot take but Janis's voice low key sounds horrible but it works

Big brother is always watching. And this album is always pogging

I've never been a fan of Janis Joplin's voice. It's good solid rock but just doesn't do it for me. Very dated sound, lyrics etc. Very late 60s summer of love type stuff. I can't bear to listen to any more (got halway)

Eh, it's fine. It turns out I like Janis in moderation. And the numbers without Janis are pretty forgettable.

i get the vibe that janis was one of the lads. no idea what that means but it was what this album made me think. some good some bad.

Bluesy, Rocky, Janisy

3 Fun!

4/11, 36%

Interesting album

This was a nice rocky album, though only a couple of the songs reached out to me. I have to say that some of the raspy vocals were quite grating on my ears, but maybe it's just the recording technology of the 60s. Favourite: Roadblock

Glad to have heard it, but not one I'm likely to return to. The cover is fantastic, some of the coolest illustrations to ever grace the cover of an album. Joplin's voice perfectly matches the scratchy, wild guitars. 20/10/22

These songs are so intense, this is what I imagine a cocaine high to feel like. Janis really brings the heat on the vocals, and some of the guitar solos are just scorching. Honestly, I have a hard time getting into this but I respect it nonetheless.

Dripping with soul. The fake live sound is odd but believable. Would have been a spectacular live show. Not something I'd put on everyday, but the passion in their playing is undeniable.

Carried by Janis Joplin. Fine music but beyond "peace of my heart" it was just okay for me.

Janis Jopis is historically great, but this just doesn't do much for me...

Needs more time Cover art 4/5

A serviceable rock album with a great Joplin lead. Does get a bit stale by the end due to a lack of melodic variation (and really, this LP is just an excuse for guitar noodling and theatrics), but maintains enough raw power to remain interesting.

Amazing vocals by Janis, instrumentals were pretty good but didn’t quite understand lyrics

These are superb musicians and of course, Janis' voice is unmistakable and wonderful. I like the raw, garage-rock, surf-rock, blues-rock style of most of the tunes. Sometimes gets a little to late-60s trippy sounding -- the kind of late 60s sound bands would use to make themselves sound psychedelic that I just personally don't like much -- but overall, this is an album with grit, heart, and soul. Still one of my all-time favorite renditions of Gershwin's 'Summertime'. Beautiful, soulful, and at times even a little unsettling in a good way. (If you like that song, go to YouTube and check out the version Billy Strings and Marcus King did for Carter Vintage Guitars. It's inspired by Doc Watson's version but they really make it their own.) Janis. Love her. And, oh WOW, what an INCREDIBLE album cover by Robert Crumb. Fan-freaking-tastic.

Before Janis Joplin hit is big with her solo career, she lent her voice to Big Brother & The Holding Company for some classic psych rock tracks. Big Brother came about around the same time as Quicksilver Messenger Service and Grateful Dead, so be ready for some jams. "Jams" is a neutral term in this context, as it would have lengthy improvisation parts that were usually instrumental. The band is good. Joplin is not. I've never liked Joplin; I've found her voice to be too scratchy for my liking. Aside from Joplin, I don't love the band. I think they have some good stuff going for them, but the overall product didn't grab me or leave much of an impression.

"Cheap Thrills" is the second studio album from Big Brother & The Holding Company and the last one one with Janis Joplin. The band and producer, John Simon, incorporated crowd noise to give the impression of a live album; they been a big success at the 1967 Monterrey Pop Festival. I was not a big fan of this audience noise. The album cover was supposed to be the band naked in bed but they were forced to use something different and went with a Bill Crumb comic strip which Rolling Stone rated at #9 for best all-time album covers. I wonder what them naked in a bed would have rated. The album itself was a huge success spending eight weeks at #1 in the US Billboard charts. The music is classified as blues rock and acid rock. I'm mixed on this album. The highlights for me were the decent combination between and sometimes within songs of blues and pyschedelic music and Joplin's vocals. I did not like the muddled sound and production and at times the music and band were just sloppy. The album starts with the created audience noise and "Combination of the Two." It's chaotic, pyschedelic and generally sloppy. It changes into a more soulful song than goes back to the pyschedelic. Side one ends with probably their two biggest songs, both covers. Joplin's soulful voice steals their rendition of Gershwin's "Summertime." The pyschedelic guitar and dual guitars are also pretty cool. Another great guitar intro on "Piece of My Heart." A Jerry Ragovoy/Bert Berns' written and Erma Franklin sung cover. Joplin's vocals tear this song up again. Side two begins with "Turtle Blues" and maybe Joplin's best vocal performance. A bluesy piano. The album ends with another blues number "Ball and Chain." A cover of a Big Mama Thornton song. The searing guitar is a highlight for me. The only song recorded live. This album obviously captured a big audience back in the day. Some real high points here with Janis Joplin and the guitar at times. The sloppiness and production prevented me from really, really liking it.

Kind of reminds me of the Allman Bros' At Filmore East, but (a) it's not actually live (they added crowd noise to the studio recordings), and (b) it's not as good. "Piece of My Heart" is of course the standout, and "Summertime" is a pretty good cover. I guess as a paragon of the late 60s San Francisco scene it deserves some credit, but it's just a lot to get through if you "weren't there, man."

It was OK - bit of history I suppose

Great vocal performances and production. Favs: Piece of my Heart, Ball and Chain

Janis has a belting good voice and the band is tight. Hard for me to judge otherwise as this jammy style of hoe down rock just isn't something that excites me

Classic 60s Janis.

Liked the music on most tracks a lot, even if I dont like Joplin's voice

3/5 Sounds like it was at least 10 years ahead of its. Interesting to listen to in that respect, but otherwise not amazing. Really lacked any sort of dynamic, probably due to when it was recorded.

this is cool overall. Never really listened to Janis Joplin - she’s powerful. The songs and music itself is a bit uneven. 3

Solid rock n roll

Cheap Thrills is a groovy little listen and I always love Janis Joplin's voice. You hear a fair bit of this on other stuff but I guess it all started here, easy high 3/5.

I shouldn't like Janis Joplin's voice, it's way too gravelly and it feels like she pushes every note too hard, but I really do. There's so much energy to this, and a couple of real stand out songs - Piece of my Heart is the best, with Summertime not far behind. Solid 3/5, but it's not consistently good enough for a 4.

Finally found the spot to rate old albums. Enjoyed this, in contrast to one of us, I think that the sound is amazing for 60s live. If lacking crowd mic. That is until the final two tracks which were not needed, in my view. I can see why they added them tho. And I can see why Janis struck out alone. She certainly got pipes

Heavy distortion on guitar. Prominent bass. Joplin's voice is great.

Lots of 12 bar blues here, reminds me of going to parties with dad when I was a kid and the types of live bands that would be there.

Interesting listen. Janis’ vocals are great, though a bit rough at times. I wasn’t crazy about the songwriting or the instrumentation but really enjoyed the rawness of it. Favorite track: Piece off my Heart

I don't like Janis Joplin all that much, so I won't find myself going back to this one often. However everything else with this album is good enough to keep it it at 3 stars for me.

It was meh outside of the hits

The vocals grew on me after a couple listens but overall it's not the sort of thing I will be coming back to regularly. Favorite: Oh, Sweet Mary

not sure about this one blues sounds good tho

3.2 - love Janis’s voice, but psychedelic rock just feels a bit stale these days.

Ha ha cheap thrills

Meh...guess I am just not into Janice Joplin. Seems sacrilegious.

Janis Joplin is the star of the show and she overshadows the instrumentation. Good record overall

Joplinin parhaimmistoa.

Not sure this is essential, but it's an interesting time capsule of hippie-era San Francisco.

A rocking 60s album with some character.

I mean, Janis Joplin is an icon for a reason. Little bit too on the psychedelic side for me, though.

Not bad. I didn't know about Janis stuff before solo work. I enjoyed it OK, but wasn't blown away by any means.

Janis Joplin's vocal chops are insane. Loved the bluesy Summertime with its noisy guitar solos and Joplin's crooning. Generally the blues cuts here are far superior. Thought Combination of the Two and Piece of My Heart were kinda annoying.

I know some people can't deal with Billy Corgan's voice, but I don't usually mind it. Others don't like Geddy Lee, and I think he sounds fine. Some of you guys expressed indifference to Dave Mustaine yesterday, and I'm generally cool with it. But Janis Joplin's voice has always bugged me. There's definite power in it, but it's too screechy for me, there's almost no technique. The musicians themselves are great, but I don't know if I'll ever side with her abilities. D+

I was never much into Haight/Ashbury rock.

W00t, Janis.

Wasn't feeling this as much as I thought I would. Definitely not bad, but about mid-way through Janis Joplin started to wear on me a bit then I kinda zoned out.

I like Janis Joplin, but I hate live albums

couple classics

Enjoyed it. Love that Janice blues.

Janis was definitely the highlight.

CHEAP THRILLS | BIG BROTHER AND THE HOLDING COMPANY • JANICE JOPLIN (1968)⭐️⭐️⭐️ COMBINATION OF THE TWO ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Love the guitar at the start - Rocky vibe, good groove - Love the drums - Ok now I'm getting a Motown vibe, love this - Nice intro track, nice to vibe to but not gonna be in the playlist just cus of a lack of lyricism. This was very much a slice of a day for 1968

I love psychedelic rock and the band is pretty good. Of course JJ is intense and carries the show.

3/5 nice but ultimately no

Nothing special but nothing bad about it either for me at least. "Piece of My Heart" the most enjoyable track.

I actually listened to this twice and I liked it better the second time! It's like a more melodic Zeppelin, with bluesy vibes still. Glad I gave it another shot!!

I actually had no idea that Janis fronted a band, let alone that "Piece of My Heart" and "Summertime" were recorded under said band; I always thought these were solo Janis songs! But, let's face it: even now, it's still a solo Janis song as far as I'm concerned; she is famous for it. I mistook this for a live album before reading that the live audience sounds were edited into the album. I am not really sure about the reasoning behind this decision, but I found it to be an interesting one. I am not typically a huge blues fan, but something about Janis has just always grabbed me. Her vocals always strike me as something that shouldn't work, but god, they just DO. The guitar on this album has a hazy, raw sound quality to it that just plays off of her vocals so well. The acid rock lean along with all that rasp and gravel take this album to an enjoyment level that would otherwise not be achieved for me, personally. Side A totally rocked for me, but Side B wasn't nearly as strong, save for "Ball and Chain".

I always had mixed feelings about this album: she is great, she really is, but the band doesn't seem to be right "there". There is certainly a good amount of energy going on but the songs don't sound right to me; they are probably underdeveloped or the arrangements are not at their best, I am not sure. Plus half of the tracks are live and I never liked live albums. So yeah, good for the vocals, the energy, the sense of "everybody's wasted", which doesn't do much harm in a rock and roll / blues context, but I am left with the feeling that this could have been a much better record. Or its issue might as well be with the high expectations that come with the hype? Or maybe it's just a matter of personal taste? Who knows!

Loved all things Janis, enjoyed Piece of my Heart, everything else is fine

Third Listen. janis Joplin is great, the album is ok. 3/5

I'm just not that big of a fan of Janis Joplin's. I want to like the raspy voice and all but I'm just like "meh". "Peice of my Heart" is the most popular song on the album and probably my favorite. 6/10.

Actually really enjoyed this. Haven’t heard much by Joplin but I can see why she’s lauded as a talent. Don’t think I can go 4* but high 3

parecido com o primeiro, mas desconhecido kkkkk

A slightly different take on the concept album by structuring it as a live album, it does add a bit of flair and interest to it overall. A good acid/psych rock album with a bit of blues thrown in for good measure. The album cover certainly is unique. It gives an overview of what to expect from the album - as though it was a live show played out in comic. Although, some of those drawings in particular wouldn't fly in today's market. Best: I Need A Man To Love Worst: Ball & Chain Note: Spotify had the re-release album with bonus tracks - I only listened to the original songs.

There a few songs I liked, which of course includes Piece of My Heart, but otherwise this album wasn’t too much my style. 2.5

3.6 - The Robert Crumb album art would be the only reason I’d buy this LP. Still, Janis Joplin’s singular rock voice is loud and proud and I do love “Piece of any Heart.” Thankfully there’s more than just 12-bar white blues. “Oh, Sweet Mary” is a dark freak out with some bellowing guitars. Less successful is “Flower in the Sun” that tests Joplin’s limits and makes her sound shrill and slightly out-of-tune. It’s a fine example of San Francisco psychedelic culture, underpinned by LSD, but it feels rooted to its time and place.

Not enough groove, too much wtf

Good tunes…. Hate Janis Joplin’s voice though!

Well, there's this: https://musicaficionado.blog/2020/01/28/cheap-thrills-an-album-cover-by-robert-crumb/ I agree that the art for Summertime will not see the light of day today. But the music is nice. I'd certainly listen to it again.

Good, but some unneeded psychadelic noodling. Great ballsy blues voice. A few now classic songs (and covers).

I loved the instrumentals, but Janis' vocals just don't do it for me. I can see the appeal to some but for me the wailing is just too much.

Woefully disjointed. Either make it a live album or a properly structured studio one. Very much of its time.

Some bangers

Such a powerful voice! Janis smashed my speakers!

Legendary singer, but really messy tunes. Did not enjoy the sound throughout.

Nice and entertaining classic rock but not enough for me for 4 stars

Rating: 6/10

// Favs: – Score: Light to Decent 3

A large dose of Janis. Classic rock with a high energy

Ball and chain prachtig

Country psych blues echoed by The Doors and The Strokes. Janis had one hell of a voice.

I appreciate Janis Joplin, I just find her voice grating at times.

just don't really care for Janis Joplin.

Great Voice. Drives the album completely. Not really my thing. though

Noodly, but with some good tracks on there - was not aware that it was a live album before i listened :)

Seminal blues/rock, but a bit samey

Was good! Not the best, not the worst. Really enjoyed it

Joplin carries this one for me but there is a lot more interesting guitar than I expected. Full of meandering tracks that kinda lose me. Piece of My Heart is an all timer.

Such a strong and unique voice from Janice, overall a good album some heavy hitting songs on it

It was interesting to hear more Janis Joplin. Very distinctive voice 😄

To me this feels like a weaker Janis Joplin vocal record. Piece Of My Heart is one of those rock and roll songs that will stay forever. But this album is mostly the blues. I still don't see what people find interesting about the blues. Janis's vocal tone is one in a billion, which you hear right in front on Ball And Chain.

Summertime and Piece Of My Heart are amazing. So is cover art. The rest of the album is fine but not much more.

TBH, I kind of find Janis’s voice to be a bit annoying.

Important in that it was the first major release featuring Janis Joplin - it is interesting to hear other songs aside from the big hit and eternal classic radio staple "Piece Of My Heart" It's not necessarily ground-breaking or mind-blowing though, which isn't necessarily a criticism, but after a while the blues-based songs take on a sameness - perhaps one that they've had all along. Good musicianship by the band though, that definitely comes through especially on tracks like "Oh, Sweet Mary." Enjoyable enough listen I suppose in some ways (as I waver between giving this 2 or 3 stars) but would this get a look/listen if it weren't featuring "Janis Joplin™" on vocals? Too many times I'm hearing this as "generic late 60s capable psychedelic blues hard rocking band" and throughout this album that's what you get i.e. it's not really one I'd ever think to immediately repeat once it's done. 5/10 3 stars.

just for Janis Joplin's voice, which was amazing

I thought this was going to be unremarkable for my tastes, but found myself leaving it playing. 3-stars for that.

Most people think of Janis Joplin as being the high point, but I really liked the guitar on this. I thought the solos worked well. I listened to the bonus tracks and they were definitely... uneven. "Ball and Chain" went on too long, I thought.

I've never been a big fan Janis Joplin. That being said, this is a pretty good album. I like the raw sound of the recording and "Piece of my Heart" is a classic. Side two was better than side one for me, especially the closing track: "Ball and Chain"

Grpovy

Janis Joplin has an awesome voice, but I found the songwriting and the rest of the music completely unmemorable. Not bad, but into one ear and out the other.

It’s the blues with an absolutely kick ass singer and the guitars turned up loud. Decent recipe for an album

Not as hateful as expected and actually had some nice moments but then they do have Janis Joplin doing vocals. Not bad hippies, not bad.

Classic Janis Joplin

It's allright.

Fun album. Janis had such a unique voice.

Pretty good. Didn't know Janis Joplin was a part of this.

Ok.

Good instrumentals. I liked it but it’s hard to listen to the whole thing.

I had never heard of Big Brother & the Holding Co, but this is the classic rock sound I love (plus no one sounds like Janis). Pass me the bowl, I can listen to this and chill all day.

I honestly thought I would have enjoyed this album more. Joplin is an unparalleled singer and you can really feel her rocking out in most of this album. But the band behind her isn’t very strong and a lot of the time that makes her appearance seem weaker. I wanted to like it but I really didn’t.

Kindof fun. Not mind-blowing but pretty good!

Good old Janis Joplin blues.

Goeie rock/blues met Janis Joplin! - Combination of the 2 - Piece of my heart

"I want to just put my arms around ya, like the circles going 'round the sun." (I need a man to love) "Babe, and I cry all the time" (Piece of my heart) Siempre está bien empezar el día escuchando a Janis Joplin, aunque me gustan más sus temas en solitario.

It's inevitable that I will compare this with Janice Joplin's solo work. It is less bluesy and more soft rocky than that, and consequently seems not to bring out such outstanding vocals. The most most Blues track on here, Piece of My Heart, stands above everything else, which is basically fine. 3/5.

Schon ganz nice. 3

Janis Joplin screaming out from under the rest of the band was fun, but I don’t think I’ll listen to much here again.

Solid ~60s album w/Janis Joplin's band

I understand the regard its held in, I mostly played out my interest in the 60s psychedelic rock era around the turn of the century.

Classic. Janis could really wail.

Not a bad listen, but nothing very memorable.

JANIS JOPLIN and a buncha guitars. Yes!

Fav Song: Oh, Sweet Mary

Honestly, I didn't get through the whole album. Janis never resonated with me. It's good, but doesn't grab me.

Good solid rock/blues album. Joplin's voice is incredible.

Best songs: Summertime, Piece of my heart (classic) tortured vocals bluesy cool fuzz guitar (Ball and Chain) 6.5/10

This album was interesting. It featured Janis Joplin with a raspy voice. Had two different songs that I recognized. Other than that she went from this into her solo artist career. Probably a good move.

not a fan of Janis Joplin's screaming style of singing

Kind of boring though Piece of My Heart is always amazing.

Carino

I am not a fan of this. The exaltation of Janis Joplin has always felt like it was borne of "let's not speak ill of the dead" vibes. But the band is not really doing anything interesting, and I just don't find Janis to be a particularly interesting vocalist.

I like Janis, but I mostly just found this painful to listen to. 2/5

this would probably go so hard if I was high out of my mind

oh yes! more boring blues rock! Piece of my heart is a good song, and I sometimes like Joplin, but this was just a boring listen

I feel like Janis Joplin is the only reason this band is remembered. And I have to downgrade it for the shitty racist cover art.

The only crumb of enjoyment was from a cover.

Acid rock isn’t really a genre I enjoy. Too overblown and this album is no exception. Joplin’s voice is good, but it overall not an album that will linger with me for long.
