Reviews (page 4 of 8)
At worst it sounds like watching your 75 year-old relative getting remarried, but at its best it is a gorgeously arranged chamber pop album.
Very chill album. Started with a sorta Sinatra/Peter Cat Recording Co. style of jazzy, later transitioned to folk/county. Starting to notice a theme with this site.
Not my absolute fav but glad I listened. Big sturgill Simpson energy
pretty nice
I may be biased because I like his song with the Arctic Monkeys, but Richard Hawley is cool. Chill, cool rock.
Liked it quite a bit. Very crooner like with some nick Cave vibes
Very chill music. Reminds me of Chris Isaac. Would listen to again.
it sounds like the album was made 60 years before it did
12/4 Attempting to rekindle a failing marriage at a countryside hotel. Standout Tracks: Coles Corner, Hotel Room, Darlin’ Wait For Me, The Ocean, I Sleep Alone, Tonight, Last Orders
Nothing flashy, but sucks you in. Good easy listening with a bit of substance and chill.
Que finura! Dejara de ser inglés el camarada :D
Ok
It's a pretty 50's pastiche from a singer with a lovely voice. It isn't really anything more than that, but it is a perfectly nice listen.
Nice, slow, relaxing album, with one outstanding song (The Ocean), but overall not very interesting.
I had to listen to this twice, the first time I was really underwhelmed and could not figure out why it was on this list. The second listen was much more enjoyable, I knew the vibe going in and wasnt trying to second guess. I just relaxed and floated along with smooth jazzy crooner type of vibe. beautiful and almost sensual
The title track was really good, the rest seemed like a kind of odd mishmash of 40-50 year old genres done decently.
Just OK. Pleasant enough voice, but the album is fairly boring. The closing song, a longish instrumental, is fairly tedious. I would probably like this if this guy was one of “my guys“, but alas, he is not.
Good palette cleanser after yesterday's Slits album. Mostly not really wowing me, but a couple tracks here and there are really good. Kinda got a slight Leonard Cohen/Johnny Cash thing going on with a few of the cuts. Definitely falling into that "I'm too American to understand why this is on the list" category for me though. But I don't really begrudge the pick. It's a solid album.
I had to double-check the date. This released in 2005? Why is it influential? This is digging up old rock n' roll and country and necromancing the shit out of it. It -works-, don't get me wrong. Hawley has pleasant, relaxing vocals, and the album lulls you into a state of tranquility. But come on.
3.75 nice discovery.
Really? This was nominated for a Mercury? This? Do I not understand? Last Orders saves this from being completely worthless for me.
It started out great, but I felt the second half of the album got gradually more boring. My favourites were the title track, Just Like the Rain, The Ocean and Born Under A Bad Sign.
Ok
3 stars
Really enjoyed this and never heard of him. Reminded me of Nick Lowe’s later work. Old sounding but new.
Listening session: june 27th, while chilling at home during the heatwave Listened to before: no Thoughts: this album has some nice and chill songs and I was surprised to learn it’s from 2005 Favourite tracks: Coles Corner, Hotel Room & Tonight
When this album was denied the Mercury Prize in 2006, Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner proclaimed in his victory speech, ‘Someone Call 999, Richard Hawley’s been robbed!’ That was taking the piss- the existence of the winning Whatever People Say I Am… means that Coles Corner wasn’t even the best album in Sheffield that year- but this is still a good listen. Hawley has a great voice and expresses the hopes and fears of love and heartbreak lucidly across the album. Just Like The Rain and Born Under a Bad Sign are probably the highlights. However, I think the slowness of these crooning tracks held it back a bit for me. Hawley’s voice has made him a popular collaborator for the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Manic Street Preachers, and Elbow, and there his voice is lent to songs with a bit more pep and urgency to them (as does some of the work in Hawley’s solo catalogue). This is a nice collection of emotional songs, but probably needed a bit more variety to hold my attention.
Really nice songs but the album is so monochromatic and often boring. All the same tempo and mood which is fine but there wasn't enough for any songs to really stand out. I liked the title song, "Born Under a Bad Sign," and "The Ocean" the most. He kind of sounds like a more sedate Morrissey It's really meant for late night listening or for rainy days.
This is fine. Was wondering how much Hawley might have had an impact on fellow Sheffield native Alex Turner, reminds me of Turner's solo stuff and Arctic Monkeys more recent output. It's kind of boring and unoriginal really, and one of the hundreds of albums here that I wouldn't put on the list myself. But alright overall and does have some really nice moments. I liked the songs The Ocean and Born under a Bad Sign. Could see it growing on me with repeat listens
I was up before the fam and threw on this album to get caught up. It was the perfect early morning cup-of-coffee album. Hawley’s voice reminds me of Brenden Perry of Dead Can Dance, but stylistically between Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Dick Dale. This album feels very retro, even requiring me to do a double take on the 2005 release date. At the time this came out rap was club, NuMetal ruled and gender-based ensembles were trend. It doesn’t surprise me this fell between the cracks. Key tracks for me were …I sleep Alone, and Darlin’ Wait for Me. I could definitely hang out on Cole’s Corner again.
This is definitely an album you need to be in the mood for. I listened to a few songs one morning, didn't really love it, got caught up doing something and had to start over the next day. This time I thought it was a fun little 50's rock album. I realize it wasn't the 50's but it sure did sound like old fashioned rock and roll. In the right mood? solid album.
Honestly a nice little album. For sure fits the vibe of “young lovers going to the make out spot” Charming, albeit a bit repetitive. But I thought it was well written and deserves to be on this list.
It's fine
Doesn't really grab me. I can hear that it's all sad and classy but it's not my bag. Nowhere near bad, I'm just not interested. Maybe it's too slow. Truelove's Gutter is a far superior Richard Hawley album.
+ na het nummer de plaat. Eigen! Nog eens luistereb
🫠
Very chill, would have to listen again in the right mood
Pretty decent - mellow, almost easy listening (Andy Williams) style tunes
Alright
Sure why not. Soothing or boring - you decide.
Hey, this was pretty good. I like Pulp a lot, so it makes sense that the members would likely have good other projects. Need to relisten; hope I remember.
me gusta el álbum pero no se siente tan trascendental como para tener que escucharlo antes de morir si pudiera le pondria 3.5
Lovely compositions, but the singing is hit or miss.
country, jazz, 2005 -> 3
A wonderful voice, I am just not sure if it has anything to say. Lounge meets country at times.
Better than I expected. I like his voice. Favorite track: The Ocean. 3.75 rounded down to 3.
A strange one that. Way too middle of the road crooning easy listening yet it had some likeable qualities. Great production and arrangements really brought out the story telling. It’s getting a 3 as I’m glad I’ve listened to it and can respect it, even though I won’t rush to listen again.
Three-quarter of an hour of Richard Hawley making love to your ears. Might sound a bit uncomfortable, but he's fully committed to the bit so I have to give him some credits.
Started really awful and generic, but the second half is actually quite strong and evocative. This is an average
Well sung. Well played. But, it started off very mundane and boring. It got better as it moved along, but never really grabbed me. I liked "I Sleep Alone."
Coles Corner // The Ocean //
Not feeling it
Lovely record. Really good album.
Estuvo bien la verdad, me canso un poco con el paso del album pero el tio tiene vozarron.
Great chill recors
la verdad que me ha gustado, era muy bonito, la melodía preciosa, lo único para un álbum entero un poco repetitivo porque son canciones muuuuy muy muy tranquilitas
chill but also lowk boring at times
Kind of cool, I guess?
An easy listening album. It's got some charm but not a lot of rememberability. Pure coffee shop music
When the Arctic Monkeys won the Mercury music prize in 2006, Alex Turner walked on stage and declared "Someone call 999, Richard Hawley's been robbed". That alone persuaded me to buy Coles Corner, but it made very little impression on me at the time. Knowing now the direction the Arctic Monkeys' albums would take, it makes a lot more sense that Alex Turner would enjoy this album. It's extremely pretty at times, and has a distinct Sheffield charm, but even after listening to it today I struggle to remember any of the songs.
It’s actually quite nice, just not really my cup of tea.
Never heard this before. Wasn’t bad, a little boring at parts but didn’t hate it
Started out, not really liking this album, but as it went on, it kind of grew on me. Very soft folk music carried by the singers’s voice also somewhat an album. I definitely listen to while wandering the nuclear wasteland.
It was fine I guess, not bad, bit not super memorable. An echo of a music style from the past, it's a decent recreation but lacks the authentic charm.
Exceptionally pleasant combination of soft rock and soft folk music. I found everything to be somewhat generic but exquisitely recorded and produced. Hawley's vocals changed appropriately depending on the style of the song, and bring together the instrumental and orchestral arrangements. Nothing in particular stands out as sounding technically impressive or offering a unique sound, especially because a handful of the songs are covers of old songs, but for what it is, the album succeeds in providing familiar sounds crafted for an audience expecting no surprises.
Not my thing, but he held my attention so that’s something.
I have learned some creative turns of phrase from reviews on this website: one along the lines of "as bland as unsalted cardboard" didn't exactly fill me with hope, but actually I've heard others that would be far better suited to such criticism (see Beck). Coles Corner is gentle and homely, separated from the countless other male singer/songwriters by genre (influences of crooning 40s and 50s Americana), a reasonable amount of charm, and a voice which is more distinctive than most. However, I don't hear a vocal range that keeps me interested or that adds a new dimension to a song, and I'm not a massive fan of the overall style and sound. But it was an enjoyable 46 minutes even if I won't return to it
Boring but I liked it. Will listen to it more.
Its good, not particularly unique but its good
YABAAAAAA (Yet Another British Album) It's fine, as if they'd just stuck a Michael Buble album in here. Can't tell what decade it's from just by listening to it. Highlights: born under a bad sign (voice reminded me of Morrissey)
Another one of those beautifully orchestrated and sung albums that I'll forget almost immediately after listening to it. Just kind of sounds all the same after a while.
This is a really gentle album. I was pleasantly surprised by it. At one point I thought of describing it as coffee shop music, but that's definitely not the right description. Also definitely not pop rock. I don't think it's one I'm going to really revisit (and none of the tunes are likely to stick with me), but it was a nice 40 minutes.
Inoffensive, but won't relisten.
Top review guy missed the prime opportunity to call it Coles Snorer. This was actually pretty alright but fuck me the last two songs went on FOREVER. I enjoyed this album but I don't think I'd come back for it any time soon.
First time listen Feels like it was written to be listened to on a hazy night. There's a sense of longing throughout the album that occasionally dips into some dull spots, but overall I like the atmosphere and vocals on this album quite a lot Favorite Tracks: Hotel Room, Darlin Wait For Me, Tonight, Wading Through The Waters of My Time Least Favorite: I Sleep Alone, Who's Going to Shoe Your Pretty Feet 3.5/5
I really like this kind of baroque, modern take on traditional pop, and this is one of the best examples of that sound I've heard. These songs are big, with deep, up-front echoing vocals. But they're never overwrought, with the layers of sounds adding depth but not melodrama. There's nice variety between the more baroque pieces with big hooks and the country-tinged ones, making this a bit of a trip through the sounds of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. My big knock against this is that the country pieces are all pretty similar and linear, and by the end I'm a bit tired of them. The instrumental closer is a really nice comedown though. These are some great sounding songs but they're missing something unique that makes this more than just modern versions of older styles.
Nice voice. Good music. Calming, but boring.
Ocean - שיר ממש יפה התחושה של האלבום הזה היא כאילו הוא יצא 50 שנה מאוחר מדי, מעניין אבל לא הקטע שלי 2.6 מתוך 5
damn boy
I really wanted to like this more than I actually dio. He has a good voice and there are some lovely moments. The first track especially is great. However the album could have done with a bit of trimming. It needs something to lift it a bit and make the tracks stand out. Put me in mind of Elbow but for me not as good
Sounds like Elwood's favorite meal, "White bread, toast, dry, nothing on it."
It would be a great soundtrack to a serial killer movie.
It's fine, safe, background music
a lot of the album was samey, but loved The Ocean and Born Under A Bad Sign
Great, smooth and soothing baritone, a nice listen. Few great songs, but overall not the most gripping album.
Someone once asked me what my favourite song was. This took weeks to finalise, but eventually I settled on 'She brings the sunlight'. The build up to the guitar breaks are just perfect. Also, instrumental in the sound of the Longpigs. This guy can do no wrong in my eye. But this is mediocre. Nice, but mediocre.
Some parts were really enjoyable and others seemed to miss.
bit dull
I very much rate Richard Hawley as a talented performer and composer. So I was a bit disappointed to find this album a bit one-note: all very gentle and melodic. Clearly, that doesn't mean it's bad. It's full of lovely melodies; it just didn't grab my attention. I had the opposite reaction when I saw him performing on Jools; he can certainly tear the place down when he wants to. This was enjoyable but not thrilling.
This is a very British pull, because I don't think this album made it big in America. I was very 50/50 on the songs, but I do like the overall sound. I'm going 3 for my rating, but a very high 3-- a 3.99, if you will.
Really a 3.5. A surprisingly enjoyable listen for me.
Smooth. Late night whiskey drinking music.
Some decent lounge style music with some decent guitar thrown in.
Quite unobjectionable “chamber pop” and singer-songwriter stylings, timelessly singing of loneliness and heartache. His old country type song works too. I could see him having his fans; it’s not unique enough for me.
21st century Elvis? Like Elvis, the music is sappy but soothing. Swooning guitars and vocals. I liked it, but it's nothing too special. 6/10
This crooner thing is nice at places but it's a bit repetitive overall. Not sure why this album is here. He has better ones.
Very well done modernization of 50s era country and do-wop. I enjoyed this album, but I don’t know if it’s one I’ll return to at a later time. It was competently done and very true to its roots, which is impressive for an album released in 2005. Still, not one that is gonna stick with me.
Its too competant and tasteful for a 2, but its not my favorite.
Började rätt bra, fick direkt vibbar av Arctic Monkeys vilket verkade stämma bra. Men blev lite tråkigt på slutet
This is pleasant enough but I’d rather listen to actual classic crooners. Probably doesn’t help that I just got a Frank Sinatra record two days ago.
Guy with rock and indie cred does crooner shit. Mixed results; some of these songs were pretty stunning, like "The Ocean." Others were skippable. Not awful as he's got a great voice. But overall just a mixed album.
It's not bad, in fact it's objectively really good, but it still manages to be so...meh
Got better for me as it went along
Interesting , probably needs another listen
Lo disfruté! Lo recomiendo ❤️
The album has a nice consistent high, not TOO high, but fairly high. It's good especially for a country album. This has that nice closeness feel that country and folk songs/albums tend to have; where it's mostly just the vocalist and a guitar. I really wasn't peeped by this album until the guitar solo happens in "Hotel Room." Made me completely raise my eyebrows in interest, a guitar solo a la Pink Floyd. That song is definitely by far my favourite. Highlight Song/s: "Hotel Room" and "Darlin' Wait for Me"
Bizarrement rétro.
Decent but I found songs sounded similar so bumped it down a bit.
Het begon een beetje kerst-achtig maar werd wel beter. Denk niet dat ik t nog een keer zou luisteren maar wel goed
Alsof je in een film zit
goed voor als je in een zielige en melancholishe bui bent
++: Just Like the Rain, Darlin' Wait for Me, The Ocean, (Wading Through) The Waters of My Time, Last Orders +: Hotel Rome, I Sleep Alone +-: Coles Corner, Born Under a Bad Sign, Tonight, Who's Gonna Shoe Your Pretty Feet? 6,3/10
moyen
Musique chill d'ambiance sympa
Au début très ok puis on se fait chier
that was a sweet little album!
Mostly harmless. It’s lush and beautiful and I’m somewhat glad it exists. It even grabbed me a couple of times, like The Ocean’s glorious guitar climax or the haunting Last Orders. The exaggerated cowboy songs weren’t particularly up my liking but an overall decent listen.
Lovely. I also love this line from the review: "The title immortalises the legendary Sheffield landmark Coles Corner, a popular meeting place of old and new lovers."
Haven't gotten all the way through it yet, but I like it so far.
This album sounds old-fashioned and contemporary at the same time, wch is typically a sign that the artist has really internalized the music he's paying homage to. There's a nostalgic quality that suits the theme, and I feel like he does a lot of things well. But it still was mid an interesting listen than a great discovery.
Never heard of em. Favorites: - The Ocean Thoughts: Not too shabby but not too great. Listen again at some point tho, The Ocean is so fire.
5/10
Chill/lowkey.
I kinda don't give a shit
Fantastisk röst! Helt ok album, lite mycket av samma bara. Bra men inte min preferens. Kul att lyssna igenom album som jag aldrig hade hittat om det inte vore för slumpen.
It was ok probably won't listen to again
There were a couple of songs on here that I thought were really good but most of it was nothing too special.
Slow, steady, easy listening. It’s what Nick Cave could be if he didn’t sing about weird shit.
You know, I thought that this album would be boring, dull, and droll. I wasn't wrong... but it kinda works. It's like a mix of Burt Bacharach and Johnny Cash. Feels like it should have come out of the 60's rather than 2005. Much better than I was expecting overall.
Promising start, feels like the intro to an old animated Disney movie. I’m not American nor British, but the first song kinda sounds like their carols, idk if I’m crazy. Ok second song and this kinda falls apart. Eh, actually kinda chill after that. He nails those Sinatra vibes if that’s what he’s trying to do. But just like the albums from that era, this one suffers from the same problem. The songs sound kinda samey. It’s relaxing, soothing even sometimes, but not that interesting over time. I did pretty much enjoy listening to this, but it’s not really my jam. His voice is nice but it gets monotonous over time. He’s not doing that much with it, to be honest. I feel like he could’ve explored his capabilities in a much broader way. The instrumental is fine for what it is, nice to have as background, no complaints honestly. I like the guitar parts, for example on Tonight. I’m a fan of the blues-leaning songs and a hater of the ones that kinda go to folk but not quite there, it makes sense to me. Overall pretty nice, goods and bads, but a nice experience. I’m surprised honestly.
This is ok, but a bit dull. It’s way more old-school Country and Western than I expected from some bloke from Sheffield.
I really liked his voice actually and I thought it was smooth. Kind of bland and not anything that unique. For an artist that small I’d say a great album
I feel like I need more than one listen of this one to really know how I feel
Good study music
very chill, pretty solid listen
It wasn’t bad, but I’d rather just go listen to the music he’s imitating
Dreamy chamber pop and lounge music from a former Brit Pop musician. It doesn't feel like something that should work but it's actually pretty good. I only wish it had my favorite song of Hawley's, "Tonight the Streets Are Ours". Still a nice album though.
lovely little listen
Винтажный дух присутствует
Pleasant music, but kind of boring. And it was too long. Crooner stuff can be cool but this misses a little for me.
Bisschen Elvis, bisschen Paul Anka, bisschen Alex Turner. 3-4
Chilled and happy vibes
Nice background music but that’s it
Great sometimes but also sounds like Shatner at times
This was not at all what I was expecting. Don't know what I was expecting but... Nothing stood out, could've died without hearing this but it wasn't bad, just not much to it. 3/5
Not quite my cup of tea.
This whole album feels really derivative and the country numbers are terrible, but this does have its moments. 2.5/5.0: Mixed
What's all this then? Never heard of this guy, but it seems like my kind of thing. Good clear voice, nice background music, but ultimately a little too sleepy ("easy listening") for me to really love.
I enjoyed the title track and The Ocean, similar in places to Mark Knopfler which I enjoyed. Probably a higher end 3.
A surprise to me - a really pleasant soundtrack to my morning commute. Born Under A Bad Sign was pretty Morrissey-esque in the best way. A perfectly comfortable, well-executed record that makes me feel nostalgic and comfy.
Background noise at an Adult Dinner Party(TM)
Well performed but over kinda ‘meh’ for me.
A chill listen. I enjoyed it. Need me some dreary weather and a whiskey to fully enjoy. 3.5/5
Adult contemporary is not my jam, but when this album is at its best (The Ocean, Coles Corner, Born Under a Bad Sign) the song writing is masterful. Yes, this is a rehash of the softer side of 50s rock, but it does do with sincere respect for the source material. The poignant vocals on Coles Corner are incredible. Hawley’s baritone voice is tailor made for the bittersweet balds on display. The sometimes-bittersweet lyrics are appropriate for an album best listened to on a quiet, rainy evening. Overall, this was a pleasant listening experience. Another record where the second listen was better than the first.
I'd never heard of Richard Hawley before but I think I've heard some of the songs before. He's a modern day British crooner and whilst I don't normally listen to that style of music some of it was good, especially the first track 'Coles Corner'. It was easy listening but all the tracks were a bit too similar in musical and vocal style to really stand out from each other.
Proto-Arctic Monkeys in a way that feels like an important link in the evolutionary chain
-this is objectively a very pretty album. made me feel some serious wistful yearning -that being said it’s not exactly the most interesting album in the world to me. sort of one note, and not all that memorable just from one listen. maybe i’m just biased against this guy somehow? idk -but like i said. very pretty. 3 stars -Favorites: Darlin’ Wait For Me, I Sleep Alone
Calm, but doesn't feel purposely calm
A capa do álbum é linda. 3/5
enjoyed it
A very pleasant and well Produced singer songwriter record. A little post rocky/alternative but very dry pretry
A lovely album if a little languid in parts. Hawley’s music oozes style and this is definitely his best work. I have to be in the right mood to listen to this, but it’s a decent time.

3 stars
Okay, interesting. Late century crooners are not exactly my jam, but I do appreciate that Richard is not a mediocre rock band, and that ought to be good for at least three stars.
This is sort of an odd, sleepy, semi-crooner record that I didn't really expect. He's got a good voice but the songs are sort of simple and plain. He delivers them well though. But I'm not exactly sure who this album is for. It came out in 2005 but if you told me this was from the early 60s I wouldn't have questioned that. There are some interesting things going on but I don't think I would really recommend it to anyone. It's not bad, it's not great, it just is. 2.5/5
This was easy to listen to
Effortlessly smooth baritone performed over a solid set of songs.
Приятная музыка, когда сидишь где-нибудь в кафе, но точно не для прослушивания дома.
Kind of depressing. But not horrible.
Great singing voice. This came across as quite melancholic. Not my particular taste.
Very calming, peaceful, and at times even dreamy. It’s a very cozy and snug album overall. This is another one of those records that makes you want to curl up with a hot chocolate and watch the rain while it plays. It sounds like the kind of album our grandparents would have slow danced to in their kitchen in the 1950s. Hawley blends elements of country, 40s–50s rock, and a few other influences into this warm album. However I am wondering why is this even on the list? It's not bad but it's not the most interesting piece of music i've ever heard, can be a bit boring at times. It doesn't feel too special or impactful for me, I mean not sure how this was so inspirational, especially since it came out int 2005. Maybe Arctic Monkeys got something from this? I heard they both come from Sheffield an worked together in the past, well maybe so. A few songs that really stand out for me are Coles Corner, Darlin' Wait for Me, The Ocean, Born Under a Bad Sign and Last Orders are pretty good.
Didn’t think I would like this when I read the Wikipedia but was pleasantly surprised - maybe I’m influenced by the snowy morning when I listened to this but it sounds very nostalgic and Christmas snowy winter vibes to me - would put this on at like a family party - not my usual genre - would give a 3.5
At first I thought, oh can't go wrong with an orchestra but the orchestral parts weren't substantial. This guy has a lovely, warm voice. I wish there was more movement in the string instruments and piano, it's kinda basic. This is pleasant enough to be good background music but not interesting enough to be a focal point, I feel like I need to be doing something else while listening. The production quality and mixing sounds clean and polished.
# Album Name: Coles Corner # Artist: Richard Hawley # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Honestly, this is something my grandma would listen to. And why does a sheffield lad take a photo of a theatre thats not even in sheffield?! Anyway, this album should not be on the list at all. Its OK, nothing special, nothing terrible. Never heard of the bloke and it could have easily stayed that way tbh. # Top Tunes: # Would I listen to it again? nah
Honestly, better than i expected, but there’s better stuff in this genre
𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳 is a carefully crafted tribute to classic romantic songwriting, full of warm strings, gentle tempos and an old-fashioned sense of longing. The production is smooth and elegant, and Richard Hawley’s baritone gives the music a consistent mood of late-night nostalgia. At the same time, that consistency can work against the album: once the tone is set, it barely changes, and the songs blend together rather than building toward standout moments. It’s pleasant, tasteful and nicely atmospheric, but doesn’t always leave a strong imprint once the record ends.
Tellement relax que je suis tombé dans un coma artificiel debout dans le metro. Très fort, Rick
I liked the album. There were some nice melancholy songs such as "Just Like the Rain" and "Who's Going to Shoe Your Pretty Feet" that were particularly to my liking
Very comforting, and has a nostalgic vibe to it. Enjoyable, but get a little boring after a while.
Nice and cosy
The Ocean, a nice Song
I enjoyed this album, but would not have classified it as pop or rock… Folk or country or Americana, except for the fact that he’s British.
If I was more depressed I think I’d like this more
Very interesting, not usually my style but nice and peaceful. 6.1/10
At least this was only 30 minutes of noise.
Enjoyed this more than I expected
This wasnt half bad
Took me a couple songs but once I got into the vibe it was nice.
Fine album.
really nice and gives me the same wintery comfort that christmas music does but without the outrageous expiration date. 3.7/5
Some songs reminded me of early bob Dylan songs
A low droning voice with quiet melodies… and it isn’t that bloke Leonard Cohen!
Never heard of this gentleman but I liked this music.
Pretty good
11 tracks of what can be best described as Crooner-core. With its lush strong-lead arrangements it harksback to that era as well as the chamber pop that followed. So there’s some nice textures here and the songwriting is decent but overall it’s a bit of a one trick pony, staying more or less at the same pace and level throughout. There’s an obvious comparison to me with Lanegan’s _Imitations_ album, a series of covers, many of which were sung by some of the original crooners but there’s so much more variation to that album. Decent but in no way essential!
Ещё одна запись для пенсии.
Good, I think? Genre confusion… not country.
Objectively, this is good music, start to finish. Well produced, well played, great voice. A throwback to yesteryear. I bet my father in law would really like it. But it really felt all kind of meaningless. Like a lounge singer covering hits. I doubt ill ever revisit or think of this album again
Idk largely forgettable yet soothing
Easy listening. Old fashioned
Good album. Very underrated
Pretty inoffensive and vintage-sounding album. Reminiscent of the blue-eyed soul and country acts of the 40s & 50s (which I'm sure was the intent here). That's really all this offers.
Some really beautiful music, but also really boring
If I hadn't known better, I would have sworn this was an album from the 70s. Someone about the style. Not bad, just kind of boring and dated sounding.
I enjoyed this. Surprised to find out how recent "Just Like the Rain" is. Great track. Love his voice.
Coles Corner being released in 2005 doesn't quite make sense, because its chamber pop sound is so fifties. Richard Hawley uses a rockabilly vibe to make the album more folk-y and country while remaining accessible. Then the last song veered into the ambiance territory, which I didn't love. I mean, the album was still easy on the ears throughout, but the change in direction was disorienting.
This album definitely came as a surprise -- for whatever reason, I really wasn't expecting soft jazzy pop. Richard Hawley does a really nice job controlling his voice and showcasing it; he manages to sound like both vintage and modern crooners alike, but also manages to hone his own vocal sound that isn't quite like anyone else. And even then, he dabbles across multiple vocal styles. Similarly, his music isn't quite like anyone else's; while still somewhat jazzy, it leans a lot more ethereal and dreamy. Honestly, it's a unique, winning combination. Overall, Hawley seems to have missed landing the US market, but in my opinion, the US is missing out! A nice surprise of an album.
Should've been worse based on the cover
Nice enough songs. Nice enough singing. Nice enough instrumentation. It's ok but I can't imagine on what occasion I would listen to it
It's okay. A bit retro. 1950s kind of style but with a modern twist.
Songs like Born Under a Bad Sign and Cole’s Corner get a 4 but there’s a few 2’s as well. More good than bad but probably a solid 3.5
Used to hear Richard Hawley a fair bit, he was/is a bit of a 6 music favorite. Don't think any of the ones they used to play were on this album though and was a but disappointed with this. I wasn't expecting a Richard Hawley album to be super exciting, but thought this was less interesting than I was expecting. Was all not bad, but was hoping I would enjoy it more than I did, won't be rushing back 3
Very promising first track. A 5. Then a 4. Solid 4. Very nice. But maybe only a 3.
Kind of strange I couldn't pin down the genre of this. Apple Music just says "Pop." It was definitely a throwback sounding album, almost Elvis or Everly Brothers sounding with a big production. Country elements too. It was decent. The last two tracks bogged it down though.
I’ve never heard of Richard Hawley before, but I see that he’s played with Pulp some over the course of his career, so anyone who has that on their resume has to be a pretty decent musician in my estimation. Granted, I’m not too big on chamber on pop, so this album could go either way with me. I guess it’s time to go on down to Coles Corner! I thought Cole’s Corner was fine overall. The album started off with a couple of really strong tracks, but I felt like most of the rest of the album didn’t keep my attention as much. The arrangements on this album were beautiful, and it’s evident that Richard Hawley is a solid musician and songwriter, but to me, the final product of this album is that it’s something that just kind of exists. If I wanted to listen to something with a focus on songwriting and atmosphere, I’d much rather listen to Ghosteen by Nick Cave. Even though I’d feel awful after listening to it, at least I’d feel something. A few notes on the songs that stood out to me: The title track really snagged my attention with its amazing strings. The music was beautiful, and the vocals were great too. I liked how the sound got a bit darker before the chorus. The lyrics are excellent, and I loved how they conveyed a sense of hopeful loneliness. “Just Like the Rain” was good too, but a step down from the first track. The guitar playing and lyrics were really strong. The bass drum was subtle, but its presence added a lot to the overall sound. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a Hawaiian lap steel guitar before, and I assume that’s what I was hearing on “Hotel Room.” Whatever that instrument was, it sounded a lot like a pedal steel, and it was great. The other elements of the song were just fine. I enjoyed the way “The Ocean” started off with bare instrumentation, but then added this soft, but really lush arrangement. That main guitar riff was really catchy too. The bluegrass sound of “I Sleep Alone” felt like it didn’t fit in very well with the album, but if you don’t account for the sound of the rest of the album, it was really good. The bass playing was excellent too. This rendition of “Who’s Going to Shoe Your Pretty Little Feet” made me want to drive home and immediately hug my kids. There was something palpably dreadful about this song, and I thought Hawley did a great job of putting his own spin on this song. Cole’s Corner didn’t wow me, but it was a pretty good album, although it’s not something I’d see myself returning to.
I had never heard of Richard Hawley or this album before--this must have made a bigger splash in the UK than here in the US, because I think it made none at all here. I know enough Pulp, but this doesn't sound at all like it. Reminds me of the Nick Lowe albums of late, which I love, but IMO Nick Lowe should be the one getting the Mercury Prizes, not this wanker. It's good dinner music, good makeout music, but not necessarily essential listining.
It’s Sunday night, I’m back from a weekly visit to Meadowhall, the central heating is blasting, and cups of tea are being made during the first ad break of “Where The Heart Is”. With Coles Corner, Richard Hawley makes a compelling argument for Yorkshire being the U.K’s home of hygge (course it bloody is!). It’s a box of Quality Streets of a record; eleven individually wrapped confections, each interesting in its own way, but I’m sure we all have our favourites (“The Ocean”, “Coles Corner”, “Hotel Room”). It’s something that I find this record so evocative of swaddled up Sunday nights in Worksop. Yes, obviously, Alex Turner is a fan, we can’t help but hear that in these songs and think quickly across to his direction … but there’s something almost transcendentally South Yorkshire about this album anyway. As if Roy Orbison had written a soundtrack for the Full Monty. Maybe it’s that, or maybe in its vulnerability and introspection I’m hearing something else entirely – mapping back to an appropriately tender time that just so happened to be within the Sheffield postcode. It’s possible, but I don’t think it’s right. I’d wager the magic of this album is easier to grasp the closer to Division Street you are. Enough blathering anyway. Millionaire’s nearly on! To that imagined Sunday night on Beaumont Rise, it’s nice to know I can go back for a visit sometimes.
3.5/5 modern day crooner album
kinda one note but an okay one note
He has a pretty great voice.
British man does singer songwriter in 2005. It’s good, it’s not what I would reach for but it’s undeniably well done. The ocean is a 10/10 song. The rest is like yeah this is tom waits done in 2005.
Only knew Richard Hawley from an Arctic Monkeys b-side called “You and I” which basically was the basis for Stefan’s songwriting back in high school. It’s worth checking out. Anyway this album is kinda a slow burn for me, I enjoyed most of it and really like his voice. I’m between a strong 3 and a light 4, but I think the last two tracks make me feel closer to a 3. I didn’t really enjoy those as much. Too much singing about feet. Strong 3/5
It's alright and I get the appeal, not my fav. I sleep alone sucks real bad though Will I listen to again: 1%
his voice is so soothing! the strings arrangement in the first track is simply beautiful, though it does fall off quite a bit in the last few tracks. fav tracks: coles corner, the ocean
Pleasant but forgettable. I can't say I can hum along any of these songs after hearing them once each. Probably good as background music on a chill evening, but not more than that.
ganz cute, sounds very old lol
Its mellow but at times a bit too slow
I’d heard "Coles Corner" before and I do like the title track, but overall, the album feels pretty bland to me. It’s not bad, just a bit forgettable—I could see myself having it on in the background, but it doesn’t really grab my attention.
This album was really sweet.
Has a pleasant, old-school feel to it. Not a lot of standouts but a nice one to put on the background anyway.
I knew nothing about Richard Hawley going in, but I really enjoyed this album. An impressive range of genres and styles.
Not bad and even grew on me. In the end, I can't really say what the genre is. A mix of classical, jazz, and singer-songwriter. It captivates with its smooth romantic and nostalgic atmosphere. Picture smoking a cigarette in the light drizzle on the street corner after the show, wondering whether you'll actually ever feel that again. 3.5/5
This is another one of those albums I wasn't expecting much from with what information I had prior to listening. The artist was apparently a touring guitarist for Pulp at one point. That's pretty cool. The comparisons I saw for this album ranged from "Ooh, Sinatra vibes?" to "Oh dear god, I'm seeing comparisons to the Divine Comedy." I wasn't expecting to dislike this, but I also wasn't expecting to love it. I basically got that, but I would say that I feel more positively than not. This is definitely a good album alright. It's got some nice things going for it. The general style is considerably suave in its execution. It works decently well here. I feel like the productions and instruments at play do a good job of making the music feel pleasant to listen to. Richard Hawley is the star of the show here, and he's not bad. His vocals are solid. Definitely on the deeper side which works for songs like these. The songs themselves aren't bad. I especially enjoyed the title track and "The Ocean." The writing is where albums like this can either become all-time classics or hunks of garbage. Fortunately, it appears that those Divine Comedy comparisons weren't totally accurate since I don't hate Richard Hawley's lyrics. The words here aren't groundbreaking, but they're pretty solid in regards to the whole crooner thing. I don't feel super uncomfortable listening to this, which is good. The only song on here that seems a bit questionable is the last one with lyrics, "Who's Going to Shoe Your Pretty Feet?" Apparently that's a traditional song though, so it's not a knock against Hawley's songwriting. This is unlike Neil Hannon's songwriting, which I hate. Overall, Coles Corner is good. I don't love it and I probably won't revisit it a ton, but I got a good listen out of this. Solid 3/5.
pleasant
Another album I should love but don’t. Some lovely songs they just don’t make me feel anything.
I got Christmas vibes on this album for some reason. Slow, but a good listen.
Too safe and friendly for my liking, but beautiful nonetheless.
With the exception of the titular track, the album was adequately pleasant. It's hard to articulate why I didn't like the track Cole's Corner. The orchestration felt too cheesy--ultracheesy, if you will. However, the folksy, singer-songwritery songs with more subdued instrumentation worked for me (i.e. Born Under a Bad Sign.)
6/10 - there were some decent parts. I listened to this while running and that was a choice
Not spectacular, but still pleasant. I think nice if you need some good mood music.
Melancólico
Good enough
Coles Corner: 7 [Lyrics 7/10 + Instrumental 9/10] Just Like the rain: 9 [Lyrics 9/10 + Instrumental 10/10] Hotel Room: 7 [Lyrics 5/10 + Instrumental 10/10] Darlin' Wait for Me: 5 [Lyrics 3/10 + Instrumental 7/10] The Ocean: 4 [Lyrics 3/10 + Instrumental 7/10] Born under a Bad Sign 5 [Lyrics 5/10 + Instrumental 9/10] I Sleep Alone: 7 [Lyrics 6/10 + Instrumental 8/10] Tonight: 8 [Lyrics 7/10 + Instrumental 10/10] Wading Trough: 7 [Lyrics 8/10 + Instrumental 7/10] Who's going to Shoe your pretty feet: 1 [Lyrics 1/10 + Instrumental 2/10] Last Orders: 4 [Lyrics -/10 + Instrumental 3/10] TOP 3: Just like the rain, Coles Corner, Wading Trough Least Favorite: Who's going to Shoe your pretty feet Empezó bien, me dio vibes de Arctic Monkeys y la típica parejita de ancianos que bailan agarraditos y enamorados, super lindos.

Chill
3.5 - this was my first listen to this and i will certainky spin it again. It might be even better w repeated spins. It's a nightime album
3 Stars (8/15)
3/5
A melancholy singer songwriter-y album. Did not mind despite the raspy voice (which I dislike in Leonard cohen situation). The lyrics made up
This was nice. The first few songs on Cole’s Corner were my favorite. Good with headphones or large speakers. Some more western style songs. I’d listen to it again but not seek it out. No problems 5/10
The amount of regionally popular British music that is super boring on this list is stupid
A bit samey but enjoyed
very tasteful bedtime pop music. has a weird thing going on where it's extremely British, but has a lot of country flavor to it. not sure I like that mix. leave it to us yanks ok? but it's not bad. subtle music with careful intentions. it can get bloody gorgeous at times; The Ocean is a great example deserves to be one of the 1001? google "rng". if the number is a multiple of 5, then yes. i suspect it's here primarily due to Hawley's involvement with Pulp
He has a great voice, but this doesn't make this album exciting or interesting. Snooze fest
Trevlig bekantskap, lugnt
High 3 tbh, not something I would listen to a ton but some really good tracks on here. Reminds me a bit of what I’ve heard of Leonard Cohen (if he could actually sing and make good music)
Great listen, without looking it up, I’d assume there are plenty of movies that feature tracks from this album.
Low 3!
3/5
Enjoyable pop album Standout songs: The Ocean Born under a bad sign
very mellow vibes may come back to this one
Cool melodies that feel past their prime but maybe that is intentional considering the album title? Not a bad listen either way
Listened in the background while reading but really like the mellow vibe. I'll return to this one soon and give it a better listen
Nice
Par contre, The Ocean: excellente!
Pleasant. Kind. Sweet. Nice.
Not a bad record, but it's pretty sleepy. Definitely needs a certain setting to listen properly listen to.
He has a very fine voice, but it's all a bit slow and safe and kind of like a record you would put on for 20 mins when your wrapped up in a blanket on the sofa with a hot chocolate and it's pissing down with rain outside. Unfortunately today it's Friday, the weather is fine, it's payday so I'm just not really feeling it.
Some nice songs on this album. Deffo call out to the 50s and 60s. Some smooth guitar as well
really liked this, actually. not what i expected at all. very nice & chill, good for an afternoon working session although I feel (arbitrarily) it's more suited to autumn. will probably come back to this though.
Felt like a cross between Mac Demarco and Orville Peck. Big fan of this album minus the last few songs.
I tried getting into this when it came out but had no interest - found it boring and sappy, but it hits different 20 years later. In the words of philosopher Mark Hoppus, 'I guess this is growin up'. Post-Britpop indie rock crooning is really not a genre that should work, but this wierdly does. Lush orchestral instrumentation and tasteful arrangements for big atmospheric sounds set the stage for tender gentle vocals that stay comfortably within their limited range and warm timbre. The clean guitars are bright and clear as a bell, shimmering with tremelo and echo for a beautiful surf rock effect, picking out pretty counter-melodies. It's all very affected, going for a vintage noire aesthetic and dated grand old big band wall of sound nashville schmaltzy style, but because it's not flashy or pompous like Nick Cave or Tom Waits it doesn't come across as iritating, just someone using a specific set of sounds and styles to realize a project. It still gets a bit boring after a while though, but a great relaxing album. Favorites: Hotel Room, Wait for Me, I Sleep Alone
Pulp crooner
Found this a bit dull in places, but it does have a few good songs on it - particularly The Ocean, Born Under a Bad Sign, Tonight, and the title track. I think the problem with having a style so obviously retro is that it feels a bit unoriginal, even though he does seem to nail the style. Its quite a cinematic album, and reminds me of shows like Sex Education and The End of the F'ing World, with their anachronistic styles.
Really vibed with this. Never even heard of this guy. Certainly a throwback, but with enough ethereal backing music to make it interesting. Need a second listen to really understand my feelings. 3.5/5
A little bit of Orbison, a snuff of Cash, and a little pinch of Sinatra. But then artificial beauty instead of the warmth I was hoping for.
Pleasant voice, nice instrumentals. Not something you need to listen to before you die though
The music isn’t bad at all, just not for me
Pretty good sound
This sounds like the Smiths or The Cure grew up and decided to keep making music to pay the bills. I don’t mean that as a criticism, as one who has grown up and has bills to pay.
I wanted to like this more, but the lack of range, backup singers, harmonies, and variety make this too stripped down for me. I’ll stick to the classic melancholic crooners if I feel the need.
Another album where the artist is clearly talented and good at what they do, but I don't love what they do. This one's just rather bland to me. An intense beige, if you will. Lovely voice, nice arrangements, blah blah blah, but I just don't really care. Maybe that says more about me?
Ok, so this was cute. Very nice, easy listening. Lots of late 50s / early 60s sounds throughout. Kinda dreamy. Kinda like old Los Angeles. Every song reminds me of something else I’ve heard. He didn’t reinvent the wheel here. But he made a pretty good wheel.
I have no idea how to rate thi 0 its's n to "pop" but not country, not Mello Muzak. But entertaining...
very pretty but personally bored me a little. sounds like my grandma would like it
forgettably pleasant
Soft rock with hints of jazz and country(?). Good album
Sounds nice! Not sure if I would go back to this well very often but it works for easy listening.
I have never heard of Richard Hawley before. I was excited about the album when I read the description. It was too sweet and schmaltzy for me. It reminded me a little of Elvis' crooning (Presley or Costello, doesn't matter). Altogether boring. 3/5
It's a pastiche of '50s/'60s crooners, and it's very nice
Perfectly pleasant, but dull. I don't get why Richard Hawley gets a lot of critical acclaim. Tonight The Streets Are Ours is the only song I've heard of his that's more than a 3 star song.
Hawley kind of effortlessly blends elements of country, 40s-50s rock, and other bits into this album. But it doesn't feel very special or impactful for me. I'm enjoying the songs, but I'm questioning why it was included on the list? It's hard to motivate myself to listen to this one,
Enjoyed this more than I expected, quite charming in places
smooth and soothing. this was so relaxing.
