Reviews (page 7 of 7)
All very elegant and simple, but completely uneventful
Seems ok to me. Nothing really stands out, but it is enjoyable. 2.5/5
Awesome guitar but the vocals are unbearable. I think this would work better as an instrumental album, but I get that's not what she was going for. This is about her struggles and damn, reading her Wikipedia article for the first time, how is this woman still alive.
C'est ok, très prévisible, musique intéressante mais un peu répétitive
Inte riktigt min musik.
4…5…4?…5?…4…5… There is real grit here. Grit from the streets of London. I like the music more than the vocals, and I don’t like the music all that much. The electronica bits are intriguing. The cigarette induced laryngital raspy voice is bad. I know Why d’Ya Do It? Is autobiographical, but the lyrics are not very appealing. 4…5…LOL…Just trolling the Jeff Buckley fan club…
Not bad but not amazing
2.5 stars. I’m not a big fan of her voice but the songs are ok
Broken Music
Wouldn't listen again... Poor Lucy!
Somewhat offensive English!
Weird. Did not enjoy, but didn't hate outright
Mumble pop. Nothing special with this album.
Just kinda meh.
Nasal folk rock with interesting lyrics
I know of Marianne Faithfull, but never heard anything. Ahhh well, even if it sucks it's only 37min lol. It's new wave, wasn't expecting that. Figured it'd be country. Not too bad, not too good. Dragged on a bit even at its short length. 2.5/5.
Nothing wrong with it, I just don't like it
IDGI
Nothing too special here. Couldn’t find a way to get really into it. The singing is fine, but the songs aren’t really poppy and they’re too dull to be interesting. 4.4/10
I feel like this would have worked much better as an instrumental album. Great music, ruined by Marianne's vocals.
Mismatch between raw vocals and synthheavy production. I enjoyed the John Lennon cover
21. Tenho pressa. Sou uma gazela que já só quer chegar à mesa. Corro, subo às árvores, apanho as amoras. Vou dizer ao teu pai que aqui não moras. MotA: "What's The Hurry?" "Could have come through anytime"
Not my cup of tea really.
Singing isn't my speed but some of the guitar work is good esp on guilt. Why'd ya do it has some intense lyrics
Not a fan
nice album art. music is exactly what I'm into but I'm not digging her voice/delivery. not into the lyrics either. her voice reminds me a bit of miley cyrus, or the other way around i suppose, especially during 'the ballad of lucy jordan'.
Booooooring. The songwriting seems really shallow and most of the instrumentation overly simple and repetitive. The last song is an exception - but I didn't enjoy that one either.
The song about spitting on snatches and sucking cock just comes out of nowhere.
8 canciones. 37 minutos. Año 1979. Hay una canción interesante que precisamente es la más famosa de ella: The ballad of Lucy Jordan. Un disco normal a día de hoy.
No es mi estilo
This album is a trip! I spend the bulk of it thinking, “She has such a gnarly voice. Why are these songs so bland and tame? When is she going to be let off the leash?” Then the last track rolls around and suddenly she turns into Andrew Dice Clay screaming, “WHY DID YOU SPIT ON MY SNATCH?” Lol! Who saw that coming?? Excellent Lennon cover and snatch spitting aside, I really wish the whole record could have matched the driving urgency of the title track. I think I would have liked that quite a bit.
Nah. 4/10
About what you’d expect from Mick Jagger’s ex wife
She's not singing very hard.
nah - C
prettyy meh
meh
not for me.
sounds too much of that MOR eighties sound
This probably didn't need to be anyone greatest albums list
Don’t understand the appeal, sounds like her voice is breaking every other word
I didn't find it very interesting
I'm sure it was good but I just didn't vibe the voice
Maybe the wrong vibe.
1/2
Slam poetry – too musically spare to be that on the nose
Not good
Why? I kinda understand the historical context, but the album itself is annoying and boring. Her voice is interesting but that doesn't make it good. The lyrics aren't bad but lose something when you think, she's a musical artist and read her history. There are much better albums not on this list. It's annoying and sad that those are skipped for albums like this. I get it we all have favorite albums and those heavily influenced the list maker but damnit do better.
Ehhhh….not for me
Not my style
This has to be one of the earliest New Wave albums. She sounds like better Cyndi Lauper. The title track is like someone singing over a Giorgio Moroder score. I lied, this is 1,000 times better than Cyndi Lauper, still not great though. I kind of like The Ballad of Lucy Jordan. I definitely think she has an interesting voice. This is Bjork's favorite album. She just said "fucking"!?! Scandalous. Why'd You Do It? would make Cardi B blush. Can't get away from ska with these British acts.
My main association with her name is that famous candy bar story involving Mick Jagger. Which isn't good or bad, it's just something that's out there. So the name rang a bell, even the album title. Never actually listened to this, though. And unfortunately, something really grates me about this album. Quite probably her voice, I'm afraid. Alongside the production and the melodies. It just really isn't my cuppa any more than Bruce Springsteen, whose voice has a similar effect on me.
I read that one of her collaborators said that they can't even listen to this album anymore because she sounds like "a broken speaker" and the vocals are all wrong. Agreed, sir! Broken English comes across as some anti-war song but it really just sounds racist - don't worry about violence in your home country, come to America and try to be American. For the first time, I question why this album is on the list.
Why d'Ya Do It? is simultaneously the best and worst song about being cheated on. It's a low point for a roller coaster of an album that starts low, gets good in the middle, and then sends you cratering down to a, and I quote, "barbed wire pussy".
Terrible songwriting.
Just bad, not redeemable really. How is her 7th album a must hear, when her entire catalog is filled with mediocre soft/pop rock? She can't sing, like i never criticize vocalist because at least they're out there doing it, and have style. But shes just nails on a chalkboard, no real talent to see.
Ehhh man skulle nok have været der
Pure torture.
Unequivocally one of the albums of all time.
A lot of it sounded repetitive and was difficult to get through
Her vocals just irritated me, the lyrics were generally repetitive and the music just a bit safe to lift this from the doldrums. The Ballad of Lucy Jordan at least adds some interest and storytelling, but the music doesn’t match this, so still falls flat for me. The least said of the cover of working class hero the better.
Hmmmm... I'm not sure you really should take against a whole album based on the opening note, but I fear I did. However, as first instincts go, it seemed to be pretty dead on for my opinion on the full album. I hated the vocals. Absolutely despised them. I realised there's a good reason she sounds that way on this record but that doesn't mean I am going to enjoy it... It was genuinely difficult to say motivated to listen right to the end. And the last track? WTF!? Longest 37 minutes of my life. 1/5
I was not a fan of this album. It seemed as if they were trying too hard to be edgy. I’m not sure what she was like before this album but the last song was fine but I didn’t need to hear it. It was fun and I’m sure at the time was a bit shocking. But it had been done better by other artists in the early 70s like Betty Davis. The rest was just bland new wave.
Seems to gain a lot of traction due to the singers perona and legacy - raspy, edgy, arty vocals and simple cold synth lines - hell, on paper this is my sort of record - but on this occasion it did nothing for me. Almost nothing. As cool as the voice may be, it delivers nothing lyrically. Musically basic and uninteresting. And that Working Class Hero cover was completely vapid. 2
⭐️
Good lyrics. Just didn't think the music and beats matched it.
Complete and utter mediocrity.
Ugly ass voice
Heavily disliked the voice, don't have much knowledge of the musical era though so my opinion might be heavily flawed in that sense. It should get better on the way with this musical journey I have just begun. All in all, not for me without the context.
Very little to sincerely dig your teeth into here. The lyrics fall flat, the vocals are aggressively middling, and there’s no catchy melody to be found in the new wave sound… Falls neatly in the “context over content” category in this list.
I wish I could give this 0.25 stars, or 0 stars
From the first moments of this album where there are clanging keyboard sounds and abstract farting noises it does not improve from there. A despicable cover of working class hero as well. This is really quite unnecessary!
Fairly insufferable. Couldn't last past song 2.
Cowgirl in the Sand
Not a fan of the voice and singing
This a reason the wish for a quick death. With a quick death i would not have had to listen to more then one of these slow feel shitty songs
The first track had my interest until it just went on for far too long. From there it was all down hill...
I would rather listen to Vogon poetry.
This is fucking crap
I just couldn’t.
This album is how I imagine ABBA would sound if they forgot how to write good music and rebooted with a tone deaf Miley Cyrus as their lead singer. No disrespect to Marianne Faithfull – she had a distinct voice, made an audience for herself doing this kind of music and clearly didn’t have an easy life. At the same time, I’m glad this is her only album on the list because I don’t think I could take another batch of tracks like these (even if it’s as short as Broken English is). The one redeeming factor for me is that a couple of the tracks ("Why’d Ya Do It," for example) have SOME compelling instrumental moments. However, they’re few & far between and don’t save the songs from being completely unreplayable in other regards. Never again. Highlights: N/A
Really didn't like this one - especially the electric blues tracks.
if stevie nicks and tom waits had a love child who released an album. If that's your thing, you'll love this album. It's not mine though.
Eh
Langweilig
Didn't dig it. Sort of a crummy pop album.
80s synth pop. Not my thing at all.
Bad
Her desperate copycat vocal stylings of Stevie Nicks except the cracking voice is out of tune, lifeless and follows the same listless melody.
No thank you. Famous for being pretty and having a famous boyfriend. If i was given 7 albums and a host of famous and talented friends id produce better. The voice is weak, the lyrics are meh, the playing is fine, the cover at the end isnt really of value and usually I consider a short album a sign of something well edited with consistent high quality but here its just that she had little to say.
People must have been really polite in the 1970s, because apparently nobody explained to Marianne that her voice was absolutely shot. She was 32 when this album was recorded...she sounds like she's at least in her late 60's. Don't do drugs, kids. Faithfull herself described it as her masterpiece. Yeah, it's a piece of something alright.
Such an interesting raspy voice.
noooot sure why this is even on this list. production wise it was good, vocals and delivery wise not the greatest. I only knew her as one of Mick Jaggers girlfriends for the longest time, had no idea she had a musical career...and I guess now I know why no one mentioned her music....
Not for me. 1/5
Sucks
The life phases of a Boomer songwriter... Phase 1: "Look at all the crazy things I have done! It's like the universe was speaking through me, maaaaan!" Phase 2: "I ruined my life by doing all the crazy things! Look at the pain the universe has caused me!" Phase 3: "I've grown as a person, and now I need to get back to doing crazy things again! The universe needs me!"
Not for me
Strange singer, strange voice. One hit wonder.
Not for me, happy it's over Will I listen to again: 0%
Can't stand her voice
A bit bland. Can't really see anything special in this
God bless her but i’m so tired of the complaints of sad junkies who chose the left-hand path
Didnt listen
Can’t stand her voice. Couldn’t even finish the album
Her vocals a terrible and I don’t see how this album made the list.
Eurgh, no matter how much I’m told she was a trailblazer, a wild spirit and huge influence, I just can’t abide Marianne Faithful.
I get that Marianne Faithfull went through some shit, and this album is probably historically important, but this belongs more in 1001 Album Wikipedia Pages to Read Before You Die. It doesn't sound horrible, but it sure doesn't sound great either
It's not Mick Jaggers' ex-old lady and not an album; it's not good, interesting, or musical. The music on this record, you know, the instruments and shit, sounds like canned keyboard backing tracks from one of those keyboards with all the preprogrammed music. Then the voice, not Mick's ex, get out of here, sounding like one of Marge Simpson's sisters. Its a objectively terrible record and has not place on the list or in a personal collection, its broken poop record.
Gefällt mir nicht
This is the first album I’ve gotten where I just…could not understand why people like it. I tried! But I felt like the songs were uninteresting, and I did not enjoy the way Faithful sings either. I’m sorry, Marianne Faithful fans, but…what am I missing? 1/5
I really disliked her voice. I never got used to it.
I really didn't like this album. There were pieces of things that I generally like all across it, but nothing hit the mark for me.
Okay, I'm sorry but these vocals are just grating on my ears. Melody and bass are really repetitive and flat, auditory drudgery to get through.
scratchy voice is not for me
Sounds like my grandma doing Karaoke with a lisp vaguely trying to remember what fleetwood mac sounded like.
Nah
no no just no. mainly because I don't like her voice nor her style of singing.
I couldn’t stand her voice. I made it through, but I didn’t like it. 1/5
Porn grooves with a bad voice. I'm sorry, but I couldn't listen to this all the way through.
Did not enjoy.
1+ Stars (3/15)
Crap. And shit crap at that.
I don’t get it
Discount Stevie nicks
Awful start to finish!
Wtf even is this? She's not a good singer, or maybe I just don't like her nasally voice -- sounds like dive bar karaoke? 1* This was somehow a worse version of working class hero. This album has no redeeming qualities for me.
Dark and creepy. This is definitely not her best album. Her life choices damaged a once beautiful voice. Very sad.
Ultra lame
Eh it was okay. Didn’t enjoy the fart sounds in the first song. The rest of the songs didn’t have fart sounds but they had other problems. F teir.
Sounds like my grandma doing karaoke
Nothing about the production or songwriting is too bad but the singer's voice is not for me at all. Pretty weird mix of 80's synthpop and a bit of 70's singer songwriter. Not for me
First impression, I do not find the vocals endearing, but that could change. It didn't change much. Some of the music was alright, but no better than many indie bands I've listened to that never made it big. Seems like an artist you might want to read about, but you don't need to hear this.
I had never listened to the album, I don't recall ever hearing any of the songs. I listened through it once and I hope to never hear any of these songs ever again. Complete and utter mediocrity.
Nope I don't get it. And I hate her voice. Some of the tracks has an OK vibe but still - that voice.
To compare this to any other magnificent album on the list is criminal
Some okntracks but there isn’t anything Id ever come back for. 1.5 going down
Someone take the mic away from this old smoker lady. 1/10
This was not great. Boring and uninspired. I wondered if there was something I wasn't getting and checked others' reviews of this, and discovered that indeed, there was, but nothing musical. However, Marianne Faithfull's life story unfortunately doesn't make her music better. Not unlistenable to be fair, but the Deluxe Version on Apple Music seems to have the same tracks twice, and I'm just not masochistic enough to let the second mastering play through, even if they're somehow better.
1. broken englizh - 0 2. uuithchez zong - 0 3. brain drain - 0 4. guilt - 0 5. lucy jordan - 0 6. the hurry - 0 7. uuorking clazz - 0 8. do it - 0
The singing is pretty annoying and all the songs just blend into one boring sound. It's really hard to tell them apart or get into it.
That was a really garbage one. Didn't enjoy it one bit.
Don't do drugs, kids.
Not for me
This was not my jam.
A music major flunkee doing a shitty Prince impersonation. 1 WTF out of 5
I guess not everything on this list can be bangers
Absolute vibe, just not mine
Pros: only 37 minutes Cons: those 37 minutes were painful
Sucks
Incredibly brave of this performer to release an album when you aren't very good at singing.
This actually made me mad. Like what was the point of this album, the songs so were so unbelievably meh.
I don't understand why this is on the list. 1/5
This was painful to listen to, to be honest.
This album was a chore and I did not enjoy it at all. Her voice is terrible, the songs are mediocre, and her version of working class hero is atrocious.
this has got to be one of the worst on this whole list. she sounds terrible and the songs are terrible. i think people in 1979 were just freaking out over any synth sounds which this has very little of anyways.
2.5/10 Not good at all
I don't like her crackling voice & most of the songs lyrics are pretty bad as well. Not for me.
Lame
Maybe it’s just me or my mood right now but I didn’t enjoy this album much. Would try again at a later time
Not my taste
3 1 Cant put my finger on it Just didnt enjoy it
1-2
I found her voice to be irritating after a while. I liked some of the music but her voice was just too much.
Not bad music but hated her voice
Not for me
I do not like this album. MEH. Patty says 1 star.
Depressing and pretentious. No thanks!
Super unpleasant voice, nothing special here.
It's bluesy rock with spacy synths. It sounds newer than it is. Weird combination of styles. I don't like it. Her voice is quite monotonous. I don't think anyone needs to hear this. Favorite song: Why'd ya do it
No thanks. No mi gusta. There is a reason she drifted into obscurity.
Please Stop Singing
Extremely bland instrumentals coupled with Marianne Faithfull's weird, bordline awful, singing. The best part of the album is the second half of the song "Guilt" as Marianne isn't singing that much and the song gets really good.
Nothing special about this one besides the early electronic vibe. Meh.
Didn’t do anything for me.
Idk i hated this
Goede tunes, enorme kutstem 1/5
Hated it
This came out in November of 1979, and I'm pretty sure the intro to the first track created the 80s. Then Faithfull started singing, and let's just say it doesn't improve things. Some questions and observations: What the hell is "Broken English" even trying to say?? The thought of new wave witches is funny. The synthy new-waviness fades away after "Broken English," but I don't exactly care for what replaces it. "Guilt" is a bunch of lies, right? I thought we were veering back into the tolerable music zone there, and then the sax comes in at the end, again heralding the 80s. "What's the Hurry?" The hurry is to get this album over with. Yes, I am running for cover. I didn't think a song about a "Working Class Hero" fit here, and apparently that's because it's a cover of a John Lennon song. And then it finally ends, with the bizarrely crude reggae punk "Why'd Ya Do It." Musically, it almost got interesting there. Lyrically... I don't know but finally it's over.
The voice is a huge turnoff and I could not hate that broken English song any more than I do.
Boring, derivative, annoying voice.
1.5
Not for me
Nope
meh
Begrijp niet wat mensen hieraan kunnen vinden. Die stem is echt niet om aan te horen.
Not a singer…..
Go bored
Really didn't enjoy it, managed 4 tracks
Sounds like she chain smokes 1 billion cigarettes a day.
Just some weirdo solo stuff
Who picks this garbage?
Her voice really grates on me
ugh her bio on facebook that she posted herself - 'beautiful and articulate individual' along with the 20+ up close pics of her. not a fan of her vibe or her music
Can’t stand the nasally tone of her voice. The music adds no depth. Not good. Not completely awful, but definitely not at all good. 1.5
Annoying voice and terrible songs
Not for me
A chore to listen to
