Reviews (page 4 of 7)

too smooth 70s for me. so long. felt familiar but a bit like elevator music

Sooooooo 70s!!

Difficult LP to score. It's almost as if Todd invented the cd deluxe reissue in 1972, Side one and two are a pretty cool classic lp. I Saw The Light is wonderful; Wolfman Jack a tired 50 style boogie and the rest in between. It would be a four or five star lp. Side Three is like a radio session or stand alone ep. It's over guitar soloy and a bit boring. Black Maria is especially bad. 2.5 Stars. Side Four sounds like the studio outtakes from an aborted session where the band was sacked immediately afterward. Contains Springsteenesque saxomophone slop. Grim. 1 Star.

Enjoyable. Very 1970s but tinges of power pop, good songs, solid album would listen again.

I've never listened to this album (82).

it was too long

Underbart spretigt!

Gillar hans röst, men få låtar når högre än "ganska bra".

This album is so long. It's got some great songs on it, but by the 20th song I was ready for it to end. Pretty interesting that Rundgren did all the vocals and instruments himself for about 3/4ths of the album. I think I'll listen to this album again but maybe in bits at a time.

Never heard of it. But the opening song was surprisingly familiar

Just a bit long.

Bunch of love songs imo, pretty good, pretty long.

I was not previously familiar with this album, but after listening, two tracks were familiar to me: I Saw The Light and Hello It's Me. This is a pretty interesting album. While firmly rock, this album touches on psychedelia, pop, and glam, among others. It's a bit long, but I did enjoy it. I would listen again but not in any rush to do so. I do think the album would be improved by trimming some of the filler, but there may be enough here to keep it as a double album.

Hmm. Nice album cover and font. I guess Todd Rundgren, a guy I literally have never heard of until my mom randomly said she liked him recently, is probably aware that "some" and "any" have the same semantics (existential quantification), it's just that "any" is the variant you get in downward entailing environments like negation. That's why you don't get "Anyone? Someone?", just like you don't get "Never occasionally" (but you might get the opposite). Anyway, this a double album, which means it's two albums too long. Sounded OK, but by that I mean "like a slightly more compelling Steely Dan". Highlights: 'Intro' (I like a game), 'Breathless' (I like La Bamba)

A bit long but some gems on there

Not completely in my music taste but a great example of singles that were great on regular records, sounds a lot like tapestry (obviously) but lacks depth, to long and in some moments a lot of music just filling gaps with no sense

70’s Rock ⭐️Sweeter Memories

I like Todd Rundgren more as a concept than I do any individual album. First song out the gate is iconic then the rest is just weird. Sort of enjoyable maybe sometimes kinda.

This was an alright album, enjoyed having it in the background because it was quite chill, although there was nothing really too exciting. This is quite an old album, so I'm sure people enjoyed jamming to this.

A good album, I liked I Saw The Light, It Wouldn't Have made Any Difference, Saving Grace and Piss Aaron the most.

This album has some classic tunes from the era, and is very well produced. That said, it kind of went in one ear and out the other, and didn't make a huge impression.

Double albums should be banned outright. Can't deny the guy is talented but I had to start skipping songs. 3/5.

Very long but i really enjoyed how broad all the songs sounded and all this was made in 1972! the songs are fun and silly and there is a lightness to them, great vibe.

Another eat my hat moment. I groaned upon getting this - another fucking double album from a ‘70s white rocker dude? I put off listening to it for days (“since last year!” I joked, since it’s now Jan 3.) It is way weirder, more idiosyncratic, and more fun than I expected. More varied and interesting music than straight rock n roll. He’s an artist. The fact that he played most of the instruments, too?! I give in. It’s a high 3 / low 4. I did listen a bit distractedly while cooking. I could reassess up with future listens I suspect.

This is one of those albums where I can respect the artist, the artistry and the influence of it while not really caring for the music that much. There are a few songs on this album which I like quite a bit, but on the whole this album's just not my thing. Many of the songs just sound like fairly conventional 70's pop/rock, albeit really well produced and written. Also, while album length isn't usually a thing that I care that much about, this one really felt like it dragged on for too long. I can see why this album's so highly revered by some, but for me, it just didn't do anything for me. All in all, I'd give this a 3/5 (2.75/5 to be more precise). It's fine, but like I've already written, it's just not my thing.

Way too damn long. This has like a few good songs and then the rest is kinda meh. Also the last song was???? Weird and bad. A rapid tone shift tbh. Would be lower if I didn’t like Hello It’s Me and I Saw The Light so much.

Didn't mind a lot of this but it was far too long, cut the runtime by half and it's probably a 3.5. Felt like a solo album where Todd was far too excited to have complete control, thus the bit about recording sound artefacts and the lack of editing to a sensible length. Sort of slightly psychedelic classic rock, had some nice enough turns here and there but overall nothing to really shout about.

Quite long and meandering, many tracks sounded similar to previous tracks. I liked the vibe, but could have done with a strong cull. The Night the Carousel Burned Down and Dust in the Wind were the top tracks. Close to a 4, it all felt very familiar. Too familiar.

Well prouced ballad songs, a clear voice and some cheesy lyrics are the elements which compound this album. I mean, it's not a big deal at the end of the day but he deserved his flowers. It keeps in the middle to me... It's not terrible but not outstanding.

It’s a decent album, it is obviously just too long. I struggled to be present the whole time. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again

I’ve been meaning to check out his music for a while now but a complete double album is a bit of an overwhelming way to start! It’s interesting for sure but a lot of this is just going in one ear and out the other on first listen. Maybe too many ideas for me to absorb right now on first listen. The rock sound being on the softer side isn’t helping with having these tunes stick out but I can hear the nuances in the writing and arrangements so I think this album will be worth listening to more in the future. The next thing I want to hear from him though is a single album.

This is a weird album to try and judge. The opening song is blinding. Then it’s a weird mixture of 70’s rock, pop ballads, and odd interjections and even disco bits? I don’t know I kinda like it? I think it sounds a bit dated. It’s alright. I might have to come back to it because it’s so puzzling.

appropriate amount of saxophone, and definitely some bangers on here

Enjoyable

1st listen. Fits an easy listening play list.

I think Todd Rundgren's voice sounds oddly like Carole King's

It’s very skillfully put together but Jesus is it overlong.

Well, what I thought was Yacht Rock to the 4th power, with a reserved psychedelic trip starting on track 8, turned into a brain scramble of epic proportions. At best, this was a passable 3/5. At worst, it was a bad acid trip. And I really didn't want to listen to all 90 minutes of it.

This was just fine yacht rock adjacent pop.

70s yacht rock, with a bit of r&b thrown in

I felt something, but not as much as I would if it was A Wizard, A True Star.

There were definitely parts of this album I enjoyed, but feel like it would have benefitted from better editing.

It's that comforting sort of 70s sound again, the one I associate with bands like Steely Dan and ELO, and which I had absolutely no time for in my youth. Now that I'm over 55, I often welcome happier, more relaxing music (sorry if that sounds sad) and I enjoyed it. Saying that, a double album was a bit too much for me.

Good album. It's kind of all over the place stylistically but I guess that just shows Rundgren's versatility.

Bonne vibe

This is a mix between generic restaurant background and ballad type music, album is fine but songs are hit or miss and nothing outstanding, kinda feels like a shitpost at times with the lyrics

Well put together but did not interest me. It has no grit.

I didn’t mind this, but it did feel like it went on and was a bit all over the place. Maybe I’ve lost interest in hearing albums over 45 minutes, but I feel like some of the weaker songs really could have been cut.

this was fun! quite long, took me two days

Solid pop gems. Bit dull. Low low 3

A solid pop rock record with a lot of energy - its not enough to flaw me but it made for a pleasant listen. I much preferred this to A Wizard / A True Star even if it takes you on less of a "journey."

The Todd rudgren album was far too long but I do think if this was an artist like the Beatles who had credit in the bank with me I’d love it, but this guy doesn’t have any credit in the bank with me, so I find it a bit overlong and tedious in parts whilst also being full of melody and pop nous, with some cool experimental touches It’s ending up a high 3 for me, and I don’t think we need a third Todd album on this list…

Good songs are buried in there but it’s just too long.

This was pretty fun. Not what I was expecting from a name Ive heard of before. An interesting mix of styles in this too. I was expecting more of a harder rock sound and it ends up being somewhere between it and the early days of adult contemporary. Some kind of weird amalgam of the two. Pretty good.

2.5, super hit or miss for me across the album, but not a bad listen.

It’s pretty good i enjoyed it

Fricken long pretty cool story behind album

Glad I persevered

Super weird, super varied. Love it, but I’m not certain how much play this would get beyond this one time.

Todd Rundgren did not need multiple albums on this list. But, this is the one that should have been selected. Cracker jack '70's soft rock is not good, but this is a great example of it. I'll listen to it, and then it's back to the dusty vaults of history.

Some really good songs, a lot of average, way too many songs overall.

This kicks off with some epic dad yacht rock, and I'm here for it! The ballads on the first side are decent too. Things take a bit of a weird turn on the "cerebral" side and then gets a little more rockin' towards the end, but not necessarily for the better. Then we close out with a rock opera! Nice production and lots of various well-done styles but goes on for too long.

I'd always heard about this album but have never listened to it, so this was interesting. Some cool tunes, and I liked the "sounds of the studio" stuff on Intro.

This album is a ride, some parts hit just right, others not as much. It starts off as smooth, easy-listening ’70s pop-rock before wandering into a mix of styles that feel both experimental and indulgent. Overall, it’s an enjoyable listen.

A bit too long

Todd Rundgren is a competent musician.

Good early Todd. Two big hits (you will know) the rest of the album is creative and melodic, but songs you may never heard, or will notl again. Still, a Strong 3.

Great 1972 vibe

Occasionally ventures into territory that's a bit too easy listening for my taste, but when it's good it's a rocking fun time. Favorite track: Couldn't I Just Tell You

With some editing this would be a 5 star. Incredibly high highs, but so overstuffed with other crap. I wish this was less indulgent, as it could be an all-timer.

Sindssygt god producer

Todd Rundgren’s "Something/Anything?", my second encounter with his solo work for the 1001 Albums list, is an ambitious, genre-hopping double LP. The original album was structured into four distinct sides: 1) - The initial side, "A Bouquet of Ear-catching Melodies," is a primarily R&B and Soul-inspired, a style I don't usually gravitate towards, though the infectious, Stax inspired stomp of "Wolfman Jack" is truly superb. 2 - "The Cerebral Side" trades R&B for a softer, quirkier rock sound, full of varied noises and a psychedelic undertone ("Song of the Viking"). The most compelling track here is the finale, "I Went to the Mirror," featuring some fantastic slide guitar. 3 - My anticipation was highest for "The Kid Gets Heavy." It delivers a heavier sound, stylistically nodding to Neil Young and Crazy Horse; the opening track, "Black Maria," is a powerful rocker. Despite the momentum-breaking "One More Day," it features the excellent pop/rock song "Couldn't I Just Tell You" with its great guitar work. 4- The final side, "Baby Needs a New Pair of Snakeskin Boots (A Pop Operetta)," shifts to live in the studio recordings with a full band, with the non-Rundgren composition "Dust in the Wind" serving as the standout. While I respect the technical genius behind this record; a virtuoso production, with Rundgren solo on the first three sides, that was lauded widely by critics of the time, the songs themselves, though well-executed and melodic, didn't personally resonate or leave a lasting impression. Rating: Three stars. Side one: A Bouquet of Ear-catching Melodies 1 "I Saw the Light" (3/5) 2 "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference" (3/5) 3 "Wolfman Jack" (5/5) 4 "Cold Morning Light" (3/5) 5 "It Takes Two to Tango (This Is for the Girls)" (3/5) 6 "Sweeter Memories" (3/5) Side two: The Cerebral Side 1 "Intro" (3/5) 2 "Breathless" (3/5) 3 "The Night the Carousel Burned Down" (3/5) 4 "Saving Grace" (3/5) 5 "Marlene" (3/5) 6 "Song of the Viking" (3/5) 7 "I Went to the Mirror" (4/5) Side three: The Kid Gets Heavy 1 "Black Maria" (5/5) 2 "One More Day (No Word)" (3/5) 3 "Couldn't I Just Tell You" (4/5) 4 "Torch Song" (4/5) 5 "Little Red Lights" (4/5) Side four: Baby Needs a New Pair of Snakeskin Boots (A Pop Operetta) 1 "Overture–My Roots" (3/5) "Money (That's What I Want)" (Janie Bradford, Berry Gordy Jr.) "Messin' with the Kid" (Mel London)" 2 "Dust in the Wind" (Mark Klingman) (4/5) 3 "Piss Aaron" (4/5) 4 "Hello It's Me" (3/5) 5 "Some Folks Is Even Whiter Than Me" (3/5) 6 "You Left Me Sore" (3/5) 7 "Slut" (4/5) Total - 86 Average - 3.44 128/1001 68/128 albums reviewed were new to me.

Some of this is great but it really needed to be edited down to the best 10 or so songs.

I need a 3.5 stars for this one. I liked some of the rock songs and even the better known radio hits, but many of the songs were a miss for me.

Really good album. Going to give it 3 stars because it was a little too long. It’s right there between 3 and 4. Would give 3 and a half if it was an option.

Not bad, some interesting stuff on there. Too long though. 3.5

It was... fine? But why was it so long😭the little sounds of the studio game thing was fun but gosh he has the creepiest voice

I liked the first 2-3 songs on this album and I actually snagged “You Left Me Sore.” “The Studio Game” was fun, Todd talking directly to the listeners. The way my brain works is that I fixate and obsess over patterns. I’m so quick to assume the worst. I fear because I don’t like this I can’t objectively listen to music and will never like something again. This is a soft 3. It’s better to listen to than many of my previous suggestions. It’s never outright bad, just a little blasé.

It’s fine, it’s just SO LONG. I wouldn’t go through it again

It's just... regular 70's pop that turns into background noise. The album was a slog at almost an hour and a half. I definitely didn't need to hear this, but it wasn't bad

Pretty inoffensive and not very memorable. I kind of forgot I was listening to it half-way through.

Too long, kind of all over the place, but still managed to be a bit dull. Decently interesting production, nice instrumentation and super professional playing, but the actual music did not make an impact. Another name ticked off the list of "who to check out".

A hint of spiciness, a little hint of soy sauce, a little hint of a tomato - you know - a little hint of the spice. This album is all over the place. I don't know what preconceived notion I had of Todd Rundgren going into this, but it wasn't this. Actually - I do know - it was Bang the Drum All Day - and this was not that. From Yacht Rock to Elton John to Queen to possible video game soundtrack inspiration - I don't quite know where to put this in my head. It feels a bit 'Pinball Wizard' without the storyline. I could swear that the Mario 3 theme pops up on Breathless at about 1:32 into the track. And that same track kicks off with a play on the OG Rainbow Road theme...20 years before you find yourself falling off the edges. I think individual songs are in the 4 category for me - I Saw the Light, Wolfman Jack, Breathless, Couldn't I Just Tell You, and Slut, but there's a lot of stuff that's a little bit too middle of the road to give the entire double album that rating. So I settle with a 3 - knowing that this was a lot to take in, but also developing a whole new appreciation for the artist.

Mixed. It is too long for my liking. There is a lot in here I like. Problem is that you have a few songs that bluesy and very enjoyable, then a couple of not so good songs that are pop orientated. Just about a 3 star for me.

For some reason that’s escaping me, I’ve listened to this album already this year. Have I listened to this guy before? I’m officially too deep in to remember, but I believe I have. To Todd’s credit, this album held my attention mostly front to back, which is very hard to do over a shrewd 90 minutes. A great opening 2 songs had me pigeon-holeing this album to a sound, but it expands in a few different directions. “Intro” is one of the coolest recordings I’ve heard, I can’t quite call it a song. But it’s very cool. “Marlene” has some unfortunately unacceptable lyricism that made me skip instantly. The last minute of “One More Day” was very catchy, it stuck in my head all day! “Piss Aaron” touches on the universal experience of knowing people in high school that were just so crazy you can’t quite believe they were real, or that they actually did the insane things they got up to. “Hello It’s Me” had quite a nice groove, proving that Todd had the chops to write a good pop song but didn’t want to all the time. The sax on this one went especially hard. Lots of good moments, a few that weren’t so palatable, but a full listen front to back. 3/5

Not my jam but cool music.

This album was a commitment

This album is highly indulgent and extremely long. It's a rock album with some soft rock songs. The playing and vocals are competent, but the album could have been split into two albums. Anyway, the length is the biggest issue by far.

Very eclectic. I'm still not sure what to have made of it all. One moment he's a crooner, the next he's shredding his guitar like the best of them. A very long album.

I give credit for Rundgren's production skills. He helped get a lot of artists like XTC and Meat Loaf. Double albums are hard. I can probably count on one hand the double albums that are solid throughout. And even thenm it's stretching it. There is just normally a point somewhere around side 3 where you're just like... "is there anything THERE there?" And listening to this album, I can't help but think that. From wikipedia: "Much of the [...] material was written or conceived under the influence of marijuana. However, by this time, he had also begun experimenting with Ritalin." And it shows. It's all over the place. There were some good tracks, stuff that I dug. Then there are the hits, which I enjoyed as well: "Hello, It's Me" sounded a bit like early Neil Young (not a bad thing) but without the feedback. But when you get things like "Overture-My Roots," and "Piss Aaron," they seem a bit like he needed space to fill. Also it being from 1972, the songs sound like they are straight out of the 70s. I honestly expected more from him, but this _IS_ technically his first solo album (under his name). So, it just seemed like it just... needed to be tighter. Top tracks: "I Saw The Light," "Hello It's Me," "Breathless," "Black Maria," "Slut" (don't judge me on that last one, I thought it was funny.).

It's just a bit too all over the place. Side one is very poppy and slick; made me think of yacht rock before maybe that was a thing. I Saw the Light is a memorable single for a reason. I'm not sure any other song on that side is memorable even though it was solid. Side two gets a bit too ambitious; a little strange instead of clever. Side three plugs in the electric guitar on Black Maria, Couldn't I Just Tell You, and Little Red Lights and it might have been my favorite side. Side four seemed like him fooling around in the studio - hit or miss. Maybe if he had just done a single album of side one and three I'd rate it higher.

Too long, too uneven. Side 3 ("The Kid Gets Heavy") was my favorite side. Side 1 is mostly 70s soft rock with occasional harder edges. Side 2 had too many "dumb" moments trying to be clever (to quote Spinal Tap "It's such a fine line between stupid and clever"). Side 4 was moderately fun, but I was just bored of the album by this point. I'd say a 2.5, but I'll round up because it wasn't BAD, it just wasn't all that interesting to me. Favorite tracks: I Saw the Light, Wolfman Jack, Black Maria, Couldn't I Just Tell You.

Oh wat fijn dit! Gewoon, prima pop. FAVO: I saw the light, Breathless, Saving Grace, Hello its me

These songs feel like theyre calming down my entire nervous system (except the night the carousel burned down). Closing my eyes and swaying my head from side to side. The only thing missing is candles, dim lighting and a glass of wine. Actually it got a little weirder. Slightly seems like all over the place.

Some cool ideas for songs. I didn’t care for the soft rock ballads.

well done. Did not enjoy the first side so much, enjoyed the rest of it more. Very unique sounds and generally a very good album. Rating would be higher if "Marlene" and "Slut" hadn't left a bad taste in my mouth. Regarding "Marlene", because many people still do not get this: Minor girls and women into their early twenties are manipulated and targeted by men with more experience and resources than they have. If you're a 24 year old man, a 17 year old girl will find you more impressive than a 24 year old woman will. Age gaps are more significant the younger the people involved are. I'm going to keep calling this out. "Slut" is just. Kind of lazy and irritating.

Men fan vad tråkig musik..nån slags 70-tals-pop.

I saw the light is a banger, the rest I don't mind

interesting … will give it a second listen

very long and pretty uneventful, but good pop music

Solid, smoothly produced 70s soft rock. Some good tunes, some occasionally more avant moments. Creative but radio friendly rocky pop.

*Listening to Slut for the 9th time in a row, tears careening down my cheeks* they don't make em like this anymore

Too long, probably could have been a 4, but it wore on after the 1h mark.

Should be divided into two different albums.

I liked the first half, the second half got weird. First half 4 stars, overall 3.

It starts with a good few songs and ends with a good few songs, but it doesn't really need to be a double album, I think if this one only had sides one and four it'd be a shoo-in for the 4/5 score It's still tough to decide against it, though, there's lots of songs I like even in addition to the big two hits, they're just all already concentrated at the beginning and end. Cold Morning Light is pretty

This album made a lot more sense once I realized it was really like 4 EPs with different themes strung together. The first quarter is some catchy, if somewhat saccharine 'soft rock' type pop songs.

It was good. Enjoyed it.

Le deuxième disque a quelques bons "jam" comme Piss Aaron et Some Folks is whiter than me.

Meh. End of discussion.

Reasonably good double album with a few good songs. It does become a little bit irritating when we here all the sudio talking and count ins

# Playlist Track - I saw the light # Notes - I could give this a 4, easily, if this was cut in half. - Bunch of cool tracks intertwined to wildly different, bad experiments. - Some of them, like "Little Red Lights" are so bad I had to skip the track. - Appreciate you trying, Todd. But no.

It was ok...Too long and the weird track about finding audio mistakes was not great.

It had a few good songs, and I'm very sure it was very well regarded in its time, to me it dragged a little, songs were good and it was fun to listen to. It's not for me but I wouldn't mind to listen to it again.

M'eh, easy listening, didn't excite me at all

Good. I want to listen a second time.

I thought this guy was pretty fun

album is too long and honestly a little bit corny, but it's a great vibe and there's not many bad songs. Great discovery

Pretty good

Interesting songs, but I found that it was very hit-or-miss from one song to the next for me. Some songs resonated with me (e.g. tracks 1, 4, 6), while others were basically painful to listen to (tracks 9, 11). Not an album I would spin in its entirety on a road trip. 😂 Cool album art tho!

Not bad.

nice sound, very long

very milquetoast 70s rock

Album was ok, nothing spectacular

There some really good tracks on this album but it's just way too long and what seems like a lot a filler.

I Saw the Light and Hello It’s Me are deserving of their status as classics. Several other good songs but the record feels like it turns toward novelty and tracks that could have been edited out.

Not my jam. There's a Rundgren song I really like - it's not on here. This is all sort of, "Yeah, whatever."

It was an interesting album. defo some weak song mixed in with the enjoyable. It was a needed change in the album rotation so maybe caught me off guard but I enjoyed a number of the songs. I persevered through a random selection post the awful sounds of the studio “intro” and was pleasantly surprised by a number of songs. There was a good range from soul ballads to rock ballads. To introducing a more heavy style for little red light and Black Maria. Interesting evolution through the album. Actually really liked a couple songs Black Maria (mega guitar solo) It wouldn’t have made any difference New artist hadn’t heard before and wasn’t disappointed 3.5/5

Having never listened to Todd before, i received 'a wizard, a true star' 2 days ago in the early 600's and now this. I wish id had them in the other order to watch a man break out of his pop sensibilities into his experimental phase but this was not to be. On its own, this is a good 70's pop album with stand out hits, lots indications of where he would go and some real quality throughput. I want to give it 3.5 but its just not something i'll come back to ever so its rounded down

Entirely too long, but the music is pretty good.

Considering Todd Rundgren was rather a polymath, and given the skills he displayed later as a producer, I was expecting something more exciting than this dull selection of songs (well-produced, but not very exciting to these ears).

A decent album. I wasn’t familiar with his music.

Pleasant but not memorable

Not really my style. But it was a good listen.

Sprawling, self-indulgent, full of character. Can any album this size be all bangers? Couldn't I just tell you is a power pop exemplar. I don't like "I saw the light" though, and unfortunately most of the album is more in that vein

Pretty good.

I scored the last Rundgren album a 2 because it had some tracks that were a little too crazy. This album "stayed in its lane" so there was nothing bothersome, but it also wasn't especially good. Just some 70's rock.

I firmly believe a double album is generally not in the interest of making a good product and this was no exception. Cut out half the songs and it's a solid album. There's a few great songs but otherwise repetitive.

I think I would have given this a 3.5 or a 4 if it wasn't a double album. Too many skips for me, but when the songs are good, I really enjoy them. “Marlene” is problematic AF.

The danger with starting with an absolute 5 ⭐️ song is that it’s all downhill from there And so it proves as I Saw The Light is leagues ahead of anything else here But there’s still lots to enjoy in the virtuosity of his playing (every instrument!) and the scale of his ambition, even if the songwriting is never as strong again

🐣🤷‍♂️

Meh. I know, as a fan of classic rock, I am supposed to like Todd, right? I just found this album to be a bit boring. A few good tracks, but it sounds unfinished and just meh. Like variations of the same riff and song.. I dunno, I don't get the appeal. 2.62/5 stars = 3 on this scale.

Repetitive, but unique

Hello, its me, I saw the light, it wouldnt have made any difference, wolfman jack classic rock

Good lovey pop rock album

All over the place, ranging from wildly abstract to contemporary of the times. Good listen tho

Seems like two different albums. The first half is a new genre - romantic rock? And the second half is a standard one. Favorite track: little red lights other picks: i saw the light, it wouldn't have made any difference, hello it's me, some folks

This is an interesting album. I feel like I would have liked this more by listening to the vinyl, where each side has a different theme and the breaks between each side would be unavoidable.

good time but also felt like i was listening to it for 12 hours

Some of the songs were awesome like Piss Aaron but others sucked like the one about the carousel. About 50/50.

Very middle of the road rock pop. It's alright but too long. 2.5/5

*Way* too long, but some great stuff here in amongst all the 70s excess. It's a lot more pleasant than 'A Wizard, a True Star', that's for sure.

Surprised these were his songs, I would have thought more along The Carpenters not my favorite

Softer rock than expected

This may be too chill for even Yacht Rock.

For the first couple of seconds of the first track, I thought this was going to be a funky jazz album, but it wasn’t. It varies a bit in genre, but never too far away from pop. Not pop for the masses though, a bit more artsy. A lot a slow piano driven tracks with a happy vocal. This doesn’t entertain me much, and I find it pretty boring, even though the musicians and vocal is good. The game in the middle really enjoyed me - what the fuck is the point of trying to locate errors in music production? If their bad, you’ll hear them anyways and if not, just enjoy the music!

Good American pop-rock. Isn't this the epitomy of what they call AOR? Good in-car entertainment when you don't have to listen too hard (probably more suited to an interstate than the busy M1 though). A bit vanilla but not bad. Recognised "I saw the light". Great track. Solid 3

Oh man. So long. A few obvious radio hits with some slightly more interesting stuff but also some really boring stuff im between. Overall, a sleeper. Best song on the album is wolfman jack but a wide margin

beaut of a cover It's so long ???

Fine enough album, a bit too long for my taste. I really like how he talks to the listener on track 7 though!

I’ve had this for over 20 years and still never listened to it in one sitting. I dunno, there’s something a little smug or indifferent about Rundgren and his relation to his own music that is maybe intended come off as self-deprecating or bashful but instead diminishes his own stuff, implicating the listener for even enjoying it. It’s hard not to hear this as a kind of proto-soft rock/70s gold/yacht rock forefather - all fine things - but 90+ minutes?

Back in the 70s when I was listening to Todd Rundgren I preferred A Wizard - A True Star. I don't listen to him now, I find his voice annoying. Other people still like him though.

I mean it’s good but I can’t imagine ever putting this on any kind of list.

Favorite track: I Saw the Light

It was fine

Like many double sets this is way too long. As a single record, this would have been much better. Plenty of fillers, some good tracks.

p267. 1972. 3 stars. 70s double album with lots of filler and "look at how clever I am" noodling, so points immediately deducted. On the plus side, when it's good it's fabulous - great songs, sharp lyrics, and he played every instrument. A bit of judicious editing and this would be an easy 5.

Quite a ride.

bit long

Impressive, one man band effort.

This album had some absolute bangers but mostly missers

Really enjoyed this album as I've never even heard of the guy. However, it was off to a great start and slowly became a bit too messy for my taste. It definitely should not have that many tracks. Did Todd forgot that less is more?

Could've left some stuff out.

Not totally my thing, but I like the chutzpah

Todd's got a funny streak in him. I appreciate that. Some real good tunes on this one, but as an entire album, it falls short. The Yacht Rock Classic "Hello it's me" will go to the 1001 best of playlist. ~ 3 stars

This could've been a 4 easily if it was just a little shorter. More like half as short, but still there are some amazing songs to be found here. Glad I listened to the whole thing

Rating this one is tough. There are parts that caught my ear and were pretty interesting. There were parts where I was hoping this would end. 90 minutes is wildly too long but I do like when someone gets out there and experiments with what they want to do versus just what would be popular. Good one for the list since it had me thinking, but I can't say I enjoyed all of this. Part of the rating is a + that it is being inventive, part is a - for how it felt listening to it all.

I already knew and liked I Saw the Light and Hello It's Me, but those are probably the best songs. It's impressive that he plays the instruments, sings, and produces for most of this double album, and that the result is pretty enjoyable overall. I'm glad I read the wiki before listening; it was fun to identify and compare the 4 different sections. "The liner notes describe the first side of the album as "a bouquet of ear-catching melodies", the second as "the cerebral side", the third as "The kid gets heavy", and the fourth is titled "Baby Needs a New Pair of Snakeskin Boots (A Pop Operetta)"." I think the final track is supposed to be tongue in cheek, but I could really do without it.

This would be a 4* if it wasn't so long!

Whilst this was great, it was a heck of a slog to get through 4 sides! All of them had a slightly different, unique character to them and to know that the music was mostly performed and written all by himself is quite remarkable. An epic piece.

What a strange album. I eventually realized that each side has a distinct style and it made a bit more sense, like 4 mini albums packaged together. Technically this is good, but I found it boring and wouldn't listen again.

The kind of thing my local hometown radio would play. Not a compliment exactly, but there is a charm and comfort to it.

this is difficult to rate because i was genuinely impressed by the variety/depth of the songs here, but it was sooooo long. easily 45 minutes too long. every time i looked hopefully at the track list, i swear it got longer. also "slut" is mean-spirited and shitty.

kind of interesting and weird, but SO long. good on this guy for being so talented as a multi-instrumentalist, but nothing here is irreplaceable. love that the seventh track is called "intro" though. favorites: i saw the light, wolfman jack, intro, breathless, couldn't i just tell you, hello it's me

I enjoyed I Saw The Light, that's probably a 4/5 track in itself, but aside from that I didn't latch onto anything particularly special here. Nothing to complain about, mind you. It's a mediocre classic rock album.

Some good one but not enough to make it worth a double sided album

I didn't think I was going to recognize any of this guys stuff. But the very first track I have definitely heard. hmm I would categorize this as soft rock.

This album was kinda odd. Not bad, though. The "rough cut" tracks (studio banter before and after the songs are included) were kinda interesting, but it detracts from the appeal of repeat listens. I will probably give this another listen sometime.

not bad

Borrring.... Is this really the same guy as Bang on the Drum All Day? Speaking of banging on the drum, these reviews are a ton of Work, and "I don't wanna work...."

I needed a second listen because I thought there was an extra star, single album hidden in this double offering. The songs that struck me the most were I Saw The Light, Wolfman Jack, and Saving Grace. I was disappointed there weren’t more.

The first half was easily a 4, this just went on too long.

It’s polished and great songwriting but it’s a bit arrogant to think this needed to be a triple album. At times it feels ELO-y but I’d always choose Jeff Lynne over this.

Way too long for no reason, but lots of strong songs. It isn't something that is going to stick with me, but I liked it.

this better be at least a decent listen cuz why the actual hell is this SO LONG?? I Saw the Light - 5/5 It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference - 5/5 Wolfman Jack - 4/5 Cold Morning Light - 4/5 It Takes Two to Tango (This Is for the Girls) - 3/5 Sweeter Memories - 3/5 Intro - no rating Breathless - 2/5 The Night the Carousel Burned Down - 4/5 Saving Grace - 3/5 Marlene - 1/5 Song of the Viking - 3/5 I Went to the Mirror - 3/5 Black Maria - 4/5 One More Day (No Word) - 4/5 Couldn't I Just Tell You - 3/5 Torch Song - 4/5 Little Red Lights - 2/5 Overture–My Roots - 1/5 (sound quality was too rough for my liking) Dust in the Wind - 4/5 Piss Aaron - 3/5 Hello It's Me - 5/5 Some Folks Is Even Whiter Than Me - 4/5 You Left Me Sore - 4/5 Slut - 1/5 Average score: 3.3/5 this one needed a couple breaks for me to get through, but it was fine. the album starts off strong the first few songs and had a strong-ish end (if you don't include that sexist garbage song Slut), but the majority of the middle tracks were pretty forgettable as far as the quality of the songs, most songs were pretty middle of the road for me, with a handful of some gems in there. i felt like i'd heard most of what this album had to offer by the halfway point though, which made sitting through all 25 tracks a little difficult this is the first of his discography i've come across on this album generator, and looking at his other albums i'm seeing most are (while not being *as* long as this one) are still fairly lengthy. i guess i'd better brace myself

Reminds me of classic rock radio back in the 90s, where there's song after song of music that isn't bad, but also isn't great. It's fine for the background, but not particularly engaging.

I love the personality he brings to the album. Especially, the game. It's quirky at times, but then Hello It's Me pops up, and you feel the range.

Good album, definitely some hits!

Clearly a guy who is into experimenting. It was funny when he was going around the studio showing off different noises.

Boring seventies pop. Had to put it on hold for a few days. 2.5 rounding up.

wasn't bad

This album is a marathon! Threw it on while picking up leaves this weekend when Dylan's Highway 61 finished, and it just kept going and going. What starts out as some sappy pastiche 70s soft rock morphs into some surprisingly experimental territory mixing in some psychedelic sounds, some tasty guitar, and even some elements of funk. Far from my favorite album on this list, but I appreciated the hustle and really did like a number of the songs through my listen. The ones I can recall among those favorites were Sweeter Memories, Saving Grace, and Black Maria. Otherwise, my main complaint is that this was just too damned long and I find the particular variety of sappy 70s soft rock that leads the album off pretty boring. So ultimately, this is sort of all over the place. 3 / 5 for me.

Something/Anything? is an apt title for an album that went just about everywhere it could go in 1972. Soft rock? Yup. Psychedelia? Uh huh. Country? We gotchu. Normally I enjoy an artist's expansive talents, but the whiplash left the album feeling so disjointed. Many other artists are able to weave different genres into the same album with much more finesse. Regardless, I enjoyed the album. Todd Rundgren is for sure a musician full of creativity and interests. The album's first few songs are that typical, soft, easy early seventies music--which I'm a sucker for. Then the album did become unusual, but I found myself interested despite that. Definitely an unnecessary double album, but it doesn't stop me from giving a 3.

I won't say that I'm incredibly familiar with Todd Rundgren, but this album was a lot more eclectic from him than I was expecting. Furthermore, it was wildly more avant-garde than expected. There's even a track on the album dedicated to Rundgren talking about and demoing recording studio effects on the track. In my opinion, this is another double album that didn't need to be a double album. I don't know why it's always the psychedelic and avant acts that think they need to do double albums, but those are usually the ones that need to be edited down the most. And this was no exception. It got to be a bit too much after a while. Anyway, this album was okay. Not a favorite by any means, but not intolerable. There really wasn't an aspect of this album that stood out or shined to me.

I like Todd Rundgren generally, and this is a pretty good, if too long, album. I think there are others that are more experimental and are more worthy of inclusion on the list. 3⭐️

Meh 3.1

A pop oddity.

This is a tough write-up... I vacillated between being bored, to holy shit that was a pretty sweet guitar riff. I loved elements of this, but when you put it all together it's kinda mid for me. Grits... this is sorta like grits for me. I don't hate grits. Now grits with salt and butter? Better! Kosher salt and Irish butter? Even better! But at the end of the day I'd prefer hash browns.

That's a magic opening song. Always loved it, wonderfully romantic storytelling. Perfectly understated bit of slide guitar thrown in, just the right amount of backing vocal and superb vocal from Todd. The highlight of the album for me. One More Day is another great song. Reminds me of Nillsson a bit. Little Red Lights was a welcome departure from some of the more twee numbers. Starts a bit like Foxy Lady which is cool. Dust in the Wind and Hello It's Me are mid tier ballads. The song about skin colour being a frame of mind and the song Slut are a bit lame. I think Todd's trying to show off with his mellow outlook, but it sounds forced and dorky. There is some really impressive experimenting with sounds and production throughout and I think the quality of the songs is pretty consistent. Not quite a 5, but definitely deserving of 4 stars for this reason. However, I'm then bumping it down to 3 stars for the challenging duration. Few too many songs, when some could have been cut. I enjoyed Intro and Breathless, but they should have been the halfway point.

Some good tracks, but monotonous overall.

This was a very mixed bag for me. A few classic yacht rock hits. The fact he did this entirely as a solo effort was impressive in many places but there were many times when he would have benefited from the council of others. If he had a stronger (any) editor / producer, this would have been a single album of great music. Instead it was a middling double album.

Bit on the long side, with some duds in the middle. Hello it's me is great, and the first 6 ish songs are too.

My initial reaction was very positive. I loved the psychedelic pop sound and couldn’t believe I had never heard it before. Then the album took a turn. I didn’t enjoy the back half near as much.

Todd gaat ertegenaan.

Nee hoor. Kant A is mega-suf (2 sterren).

This is quality stuff but songs become repetitive to me… I have listened to this album many times and it never does it for me.

Stylistically versatile double album from the early 1970s, which combines rock, pop, psychedelic rock, experimental/avant-pop, and R'n'B. I liked the more experimental middle part of the album, the least favorite was the first couple of tracks, which sounded too clinical, almost AI-like. He's talented, and production wise it is an excellent album. It's too long to me, though I appreciate the quality didn't drop throughout the album.

Length lowered the rating for me, but still enjoyed. Felt like driving with my mom

When I hear his name, I always conflate Todd Rundgren with Harry Nilsson, even though I’m much more familiar with the latter. Now that I’ve listened to a very long Rundgren record, I have a way of remembering the difference: Nilsson is the one who is cool and charming. This is fine though, if a bit corny and long.

I knew and like the opening song but find the rest of the album a bit bewildering and a bit tedious to be honest. I will give it another spin when I have a bit of spare time.

There are some great tracks, and the mix of genres combined with modern-sounding interstitial sound bites makes it feel surprisingly fresh for an album from ’72. However, it feels a bit overstuffed with too many songs for a single album.

Chill easy listening

He’s a talented singer/songwriter writer. The music is melodic and generally peaceful - good for the morning to ease into the day. Having said that, it’s still not my fave style of music.

Okayish

There are some lovely songs on here, and a fair amount of variety. It's quite long, though. Nothing jumped out to me as "bad" so I would say overall this was alright.

Todd Rundgren has a nice voice and the he enjoys creating different sounds. "Hello It's Me" is my favorite. The power of editing from 4-sides to 2-sides would have been more commercial but that's not Todd Rundgren. Enjoyed the false starts and adlibs.

Good singer from the 70’s. Wide range of hits.

if this had been about 45 minutes long, i believe it could have been 5 stars, there was some real cool music and nice instruments and i enjoyed it quite a bit but it was just too long and full of some faff. i struggled how to score this but in the end, the unnecessary length and addition of worthless songs like Slut mean it’s just in the middle somewhere.

16/01/25 This was such a strange album, I have no idea whether I liked it or not.

Rundgren is a wonderfully creative and talented musician and songwriter. His albums always burst with ideas and this is no exception. Well - it’s not really an actual album now, is it? It could easily be a clumsy affair with no cohesion; but it is instead divided into four separate, shorter albums with their own individuality. The first three are rather brilliant, but I don’t really catch the vibe of the fourth and final which ultimately makes the album too long. 1 and ⅓ star for each of the first three - and then a deduction for the fourth side.

Not my favorite, album quite long

I knew this guy whose father was a huge Todd Rundgren fan. I didn’t get it then. And I don’t get it now.

Ganz in Ordnung. Eingängige Songs, aber etwas zu viele.

Pretty interesting and fun album. Standout songs: I Saw the Light Song of the Viking Black Maria

Fun experimental album , not a lot of replay value for me but I can appreciate some of the experiments

You Left Me Sore - with how long this is Nothing about this warrants how long it is. If I was a fan of his I’m sure id be ecstatic, but I don’t find the album to be anything more than just that 70’s pop sound. It’s about as enjoyable as any Billy Joel record I suppose, not really something I’d ever go out of my way to listen to but I guess I would sing along if the whole crowd was too. Not sure why this is the must listen album of his and not the more experimental stuff the Wikipedia summary mentioned. But I’ll give it an extra star for doing it all himself, I can respect that. Favorite - I Saw The Light

Irgendwas Besonderes! Und das Alleinstellungsmerkmal hat mir gefehlt. Rating: 2,75-3/5

Album art and title catched my fancy. If I had to explain this album with one word it would be "diverse". But you see, diversity doesn't have a positive connotation in our case. I couldn't wait most songs to end and I listened a few songs multiple times.

Enjoyable but way too damn long

I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed some of the MoR radio sunshine wafters. I was also surprised by how little I enjoyed some of the studio-noodling. Oh, and the thing as a whole is twice as bloody long as it should be. But there's stuff on here that will reward some repeat listens I think.

Zo! ***

There’s a lot going on here, Todd. Could be a 2, could be a 4. I think I was in the same quandary last time I got this guy. I’d really like the chance to get this one over a weekend and figure out if I like it or not. He’s very talented and driven but do actually want to listen to any of his songs? A bit, it’s a 3 I guess.

Quite impressive he wrote and played almost everything by himself. That being said, I liked side 4 of the album (where he didn't play every instrument) better. All in all a decent album, but not very outstanding.

A high 3* album. Great fun, and some nice hits. Made mostly by one fella who was sick of shitty session musicians. Awesome.

If Todd is your jam then this is probably the best album ever. For the rest of us it’s passable background music while doing literally anything else.

Sometimes this list feels like 1001 Longest Albums... yet another double album! I mostly liked it, the pop tunes are fun, but could have been much much shorter.

A bit hippy dippy

IT DRAGS FOR WAY TOO LONG.

Not my type of music.

Pretty solid

There’s a playful disarray in the music here, like the artist is testing boundaries but doesn’t want to overstep. You can hear the echoes of Carole King’s breezy confidence, though it veers into more whimsical territory. Some parts feel patched together, but that’s where the charm lies. It’s a little scattershot but warm-hearted, like a friend who tells you a dozen stories in one sitting.

Legal, porém um pouco enjoativo...muito longo

A pop masterpiece. The variety is mind-boggling, everything easily accessible and catchy. It helps I haven't heard classics like I Saw the Light in forever--they sound even more impressive hearing them with fresh ears. Todd steps up, outta the park.

Patchy but eminently enjoyable and a few great classics that I’d completely forgotten.

Albumi #102, 07.11.2024 Toistaiseksi tuntematon artisti. Something/Anything? on Rundgrenin kolmas albumi vuodelta 1972.

Its background music. Its ok bit too long same song with diferent beats. Love pop rockish ballards. Its like listening to olivia newton john but with the look of a male rock star. Picks up in the last songs butnit was too little too late Its a meh for me

This started off as quintessential 70s easy listening, but there was a lot of variety in style as the album went on. It's impressive he pretty much recorded all of this himself. He's incredibly talented, and I like his voice and his vibe. The little behind the scenes moments were kind of cute too. As a double album without a unifying central concept, it does feel long and drags a bit though, and I found myself getting pretty bored in a lot of places.

Decent separation, Def 70s vibes

I knew two songs from this album, and I think liked them less than the rest. It’s too long.

Another surprise as he is from my era! Unknown artist, unknown album. I enjoyed most tracks. Clean pop rock sound and nice arrangements.

Feels like easy listening boat songs. Bonus points for some sax.

Didnt enjoy that much bc of the length, way too long in my opinion, but really good mix of sounds

This is fine. Didn’t need to be a double album, though. And it ain’t no Hall and Oates.

Overall I enjoyed my time with this. There’s a few songs I found to be great. It this album is also 20 minutes too long. 3.5/5

I try not to be a double album hater but this was too long

#355. It tricks you into thinking it's fine at first, but it failed to keep my interest for long. 3/5: acceptable?

You can tell this guy likes music, which makes it fun. Even though he's having a great time, most of the songs are okay so nothing is a standout. There's just too many songs for them all to be great. Wishing sometimes that artists would edit themselves a little more. 3/5

I had two questions in my head when this album popped up on my list: “Who the fuck is Todd Rundgren?” and “Why in god’s name is a double album on this list?”. This is a behemoth of an album, length wise, and I’ll be honest, it took me two sittings to get through this. That being said, I’m going to regurgitate what I saw on Wikipedia, and state that the album is divided into four parts, which makes the listening experience more manageable. The first part is standard pop. The songs were good, but I was nervous that it was setting the tone for the rest of the album; safe and maybe monotonous. Fortunately, the second part is more abstract and experimental (expect Marlene), which helps Todd sustain my attention to the halfway mark. Honestly, I was hoping the rest of the album would be like this. However, the third part was a bit ambiguous, as it felt more… rock inspired? Wikipedia says this part is where the “kid gets heavy” but it only felt like half the album was more heavy. The other half just felt like more first part rejects. Then the last part was sort of a garage section, complete with banter between Todd and his band. This part has its charm, I’ll admit. I say this, there are plenty of good songs on this album, such as the hits like I Saw the Light, and Couldn’t I Just Tell You, along with some lesser known songs like Torch Song and Wolfman Jack. You can pick a good selection of tunes from this double album. But for a package that makes Tool albums feel short by comparison, it’s only ok. And honestly, ok for a 90-minute album is not very good. The quality of the songs, however, as well as Todd Rundgren’s vocals, do save this album from being rated too low. It’s a good album, but maybe not for 90 minutes. Favorite Track: Couldn’t I Just Tell You Other hits: Hello It’s Me, I Saw the Light, Slut, Wolfman Jack, Torch Song, Breathless, Saving Grace

Plenty of nice songs, such as the starter. Unfortunately, there is a lot of unremarkable stuff and nonsense as well, making the album way too long.

Nice. Long

Alltof langt. Tvöfaldar = rúnk. En fínustu sprettir. Bleiknefjasálarsöngur. 3,5.

It’s ok but not really something I’d listen to. Black Maria was the best song. Little red lights was pretty good Slut was good apart from the slow start. Once the song kicked in it was pretty decent.

I only knew 2 songs 3 stars

Todd is a strange cookie. The first album of his on this list I hated. This one was better. He's not blowing my mind but this was a definite improvement on A Wizard...

3.5/5. Decent but as far as 70s double albums go, you can't top George Harrison's masterpiece.
