Totally killer. This album is all over the place in the best kind of way.
wonderful
This album was an awesome blend of styles with a unique Brazilian twist. So cool!
Caetano Veloso's self-titled debut album, released in 1968, is considered one of the most revolutionary albums of the 1960s . The album is the opening salvo of Tropicália, a movement that announced the arrival of the greatest Brazilian talent since João Gilberto and launched a fifty-year career that’s not only changed Brazilian music but American music as well, from Talking Heads to Beck to No Wave legend Arto Lindsay and Animal Collective . The album is a unique blend of Brazilian rhythms, psychedelic rock, and avant-garde experimentation . The lyrics are poetic, surrealistic, and politically charged, reflecting the complicated political growing pains of an allegedly post-colonial world . The album features Veloso's soothing voice, which effortlessly glides through the melody, evoking nostalgic feelings in listeners . The sound and atmosphere are very quiet and intimate, and most of the time Veloso's vocals are only backed by his own acoustic guitar playing . The album is finely tuned and further helped by the excellent production by Caetano's son Moreno and Pedro Sá . The album is a must-hear for all music lovers, aficionados, and jazz snobs . The review can focus on all aspects of the album, including lyrics, music production, vocal performance, and influence on Brazilian music. Pros: The album is a unique blend of Brazilian rhythms, psychedelic rock, and avant-garde experimentation. Veloso's soothing voice effortlessly glides through the melody, evoking nostalgic feelings in listeners. The sound and atmosphere are very quiet and intimate, and most of the time Veloso's vocals are only backed by his own acoustic guitar playing. The lyrics are poetic, surrealistic, and politically charged, reflecting the complicated political growing pains of an allegedly post-colonial world. The album is finely tuned and further helped by the excellent production by Caetano's son Moreno and Pedro Sá. The album is considered one of the most important and influential Brazilian albums of all time, and it launched a fifty-year career that’s not only changed Brazilian music but American music as well, from Talking Heads to Beck to No Wave legend Arto Lindsay and Animal Collective. Cons: None found.
This was a surprise 5 out of 5 for me. I had never heard of this album or "Tropicália" but hey - I really like it! A mix of classic Brazilian jazzy/folk sounds with psychedelic influences. It is enjoyable to listen to and full of surprises. I have no idea what the lyrics reference but I understand from the description that it's politically edgy? I can't speak to that of course, but what a fun new discovery. I will definitely add this to my listen list.
Quite exotic to my ears. Veloso's voice is perfect for this style. Alegria, Alegria is a masterpiece.
I don't have all of the context of where this stands in the Tropicália world, but I am reading this is one of the first Tropicália records, so I'm guessing it's very important. All of that aside, this is just a great record. Everything you'd want and expect in a classic Tropicália record.

Beautiful
Idk what he's saying but I like it
I was really into this today
Bao
Excelente como siempre
- elements of bossa nova which I really enjoy - psychedelic rock opener - traditional instruments/drums
This was the kind of album I’m doing this thing for. Never heard of it before, but I’m a sucker for Brazilian music and so loved it
For an album in a language I can’t understand, I genuinely got so much enjoyment out of it! The instrumental was great, the vocals were pretty good, and the tracks were varied enough that even though I couldn’t understand what was being said, it didn’t all sound the same. 4/5 ⭐️ 181/1089
This is my favourite new discovery so far. If I were a much cooler person this is the sort of thing I’d have playing on vinyl in the background on a lazy afternoon while I swanned around the house in a fabulous robe with a caipirinha and a cigarette.
Lovely little arrangement of tropical music. Never heard of this guy but he had clout in my mind. He covered all the hits in one fluid sub 40 minute record. If you're too narrowminded to appreciate wordly music and take to the keyboard to express your frustration, you're truly at fault. This is some of the best music in the entire world. I for one am a frequent latin american music appreciatior. Some of the new stuff and aggressive reggaeton is a bit much but these laid back jams are lovely. Headed into NYC to see the Knicks championship parade and grab a beer. Such a great summer ahead of us.
LOVE IT! So good. Listen to it. Soy Loco Pro Ti America! Soy Loco Por Ti Amore! Just a good album, this guy is a genius. Also some cool Beatles influence I think.
Such a joyous album. I wish I understood Portuguese.
self-titled debut album of caetano veloso. veloso is said to be one of the first pioneers of tropicália music, an artsy contemporary musical movement that made its way through south america in the '60s, blending different local and worldwide sounds and communicating messages to brazil's then military dictatorship. tropicália as a whole is a wide fusion of sounds and i can hear it pretty well in here, from bossa rhythms to orchestral pop hints to jazz pop stuff too... i love neat little spectrums of sound. this is the kind of album that intends to put you straight into the country where it originates from. with this album, it's like... in the rainforest with birds and chimps squawking and screeching at you. not a perfect five unfortunately, but you really really can't go wrong with this... neat little level of portuguese art pop.
Good album, good pick for the list.
Nice, short and fun listen!
Un viaje a Brasil en los años 70. Todo es alegría
8/10
I enjoy this style of music greatly and its fuun and experimental
I really liked this album, the more softer songs put me in a good mood, even if I dont know what he's saying 😅 Would listen to again maybe.
Appreciate being introduced to Veloso and the Brazilian Tropicalia scene.
This is psychedelic as all hell, like Sgt Pepper levels of psychedelia. It has nice range of different sounds all packed into the 35 minute experience. I will try to describe some of the sounds but I'm not too versed with Brazilian music. I will give it a shot, there's some quite jazzy pieces with some songs that more pop-focused, some of the instrumentals of songs sound like music you'd hear in a classic Disney movie. Last thing that is note-worthy is that the instrumentation and arrangements are very luscious. Highlight Song/s: "Tropicalia" and "alegria, alegria"
Perfect for my upcoming Portugal trip
Fun fun fun 4 4 4
fun
I feel like he has a good voice but can't sing very well. 4/5
I know almost nothing about tropicalia, but dug this.
Tropicalia rules but I tend to prefer Gilberto Gil. This is definitely more of the bossa nova smooth kind, less the psychedelic rock inspired kind that’s more fun
Just a ton of fun, and great cover art to boot. Favorite Songs: Tropicalia, Clarice
Really a fun album
Never heard of Veloso. This was great. Really enjoyed.
It's ok. Bossa nova mixed with 60s flower power pop. Nothing special, but nothing bad either. 3.5/5
I think the part of this experience i am enjoying most in listening to music from other cultures, i am loving this stuff
Infectious music, well recorded and incredibly listenable. Dig this one. Smoky lounge, chill shopping cart, wispy afternoon vibes. Catch the chill, man.
I was just complaining to my friend about the thousand and one albums that I plan to review. “How is it,” I said, “that we get Black Sabbath and Metallica time after time and a whole movement of music, like Tropicalia, is left out?” And, like and behold, now I’ve got a Tropicalia album -not the best one, in my mind. For that look for Os Mutantes or Gilberto Gil’s Procissao 1968 But, still at least I’m off the heavy metal and onto something different.
Want to give this more time. I'm kind of strangely vaguely aware that I like this artist a lot. He has such a beautiful sound and does some incredible subtle storytelling through music. This specific album didn't hit quite as hard as I hoped today. I think I need to give it more time, or it might be that other eras of his music appeal to me more? Hope there's more on the list but likely I'll have to explore his career more myself. To be clear - really enjoyed it, just hoped it would be an instant favourite

¡fiesta! 4/5
Will take some more time to really appreciate, but the energy is great and I always like when orchestration can surprise me.
Highlights: Tropicalia, Alegria alegria, Onde andaras, Anunciacao, Superbacana, Clara, Soy loco por ti America, Eles It's a shame it isn't available to stream in my country, but it's worth the effort to dig up the files on the web. The language barrier was a bit of a pain in the ass. Especially since you can't avoid it because the lyrics are a very important element. I feel like I didn't fully get it, but there's a mix of Brazilian patriotism, anti-US sentiment and religious themes. The style is interesting because it wasn't as western as I expected it to be, but it still sounds so 60s. I liked it quite a lot so I don't mind listening to it without fully understanding the lyrics.
Judging from the reviews, this album is sorely misunderstood. But to be fair, it's really hard to pin down what Tropicalia is. Either way, you can feel the roots of modern Brasileiro music all over this. It is a very sweet album. Highlights: Clarice, Onde Andaras
The nonchalance when recounting experiences of the Brazilian dictatorship against the beauty of the music is really affecting. I’m not massively into Caetano’s vocal percussion/humming but otherwise great
Muito bom!!!
the second artist i've never heard of before these 1001s, and it's pretty damn good. it's possible to draw a line from stereolab to antennae to veloso. i'm very happy to now be able to make this connection
Si
Listened to English language album - very good
completely new to me and i liked it a lot! very fun very groovy
Nice.
It's actually nice and vibe-y but fuck Portuguese please universe let me live.
Vibey, feels like being in a sweaty bar sipping cold mojitos. In the 70s. With a moustache.
212/1089 i’m such a fan of the Portuguese language and Brazilian variant, as well as the music that comes from it, so this’ll be a delight. as expected, i quite enjoyed this, i find Tropicália/Bossa Nova like this quite relaxing and fun to listen to faves: most of the album tbh but if i had to choose… Eles, Tropicália, Clara and Clarice 81/100
Really enjoyable and upbeat. Embarrassed to say I just learned the translation of ave Maria from a YouTube comment
This is a nice mash up of styles. It definitely has a Brazilian feel throughout, but there's enough 60s rock flourishes in the mix to keep me more interested in it.
Love it
Interesting! I enjoyed this. It was great background music for work and I feel like it would be great for a cocktail party. Very fun.
Super chill 60s Brazilian pop music. Perhaps an influence on later crooners like Seu Jorge.
The other side of Brazil that you didn't hear in the 60s.
Alegria, Alegria
When listening to music in a language you don't understand, you can either find a translation, learn the language or go with the vibes. Caetano Veloso has god some vibes. Great voice. The music, and the album cover are a product of its time, but it still holds up.
Gorgeous tropical psychedelic rock and latin grooves. I adore this, his voice is clear, brings in a soulfulness and warm analogue fuzz- this makes you feel good, takes you to being cool and young on the beach in Rio in the 70s, some tasty guitar licks going on
7/10
So sometimes I forget about tropicália and start thinking that Brazilian music is all just bossa nova, those records that my dad had in the 60s: slow, boring music for endless afternoons. But no, there's also stuff like this. There are keyboards, guitars, drums, even a sitar on this record! And Caetano Veloso has a great voice. This record has that nice warm sultry feeling that you get from bossa nova minus the part that puts me to sleep. The cover is interesting. Did they think there were dragons in Brazil in 1968? 4 stars
Incredible debut by Caetano, so much passion and soul through the songs, his soft voice and a tropicalia vibe you can't turn away from. Loved it!
Surprised by how great this was. I had heard about Brazilian music from the 60s during the Tropicalia movement, but somehow didn’t listen to this album. Incredible stuff.
A fine collection of bossa nova, nothing great, but it adds up to a very pleasant listen overall. 4/5
Oooh I loved, loved, loved! Very fresh, very fun, varied. Favourite tracks: Clarice
I was so shocked to see how old this album was!! Given that I'd say it's stood the test of time. There were so many fun and interesting elements to this and I loved how each song was distinct whilst maintaining the overall vibe of the album. I've also never listened to any music in Portuguese before so that was really cool (I kept being surprised at of how similar some things were to french).
Interesting album. I'd probably listen again & check out some of his other stuff.
Don't understand any of it but it has catchy melodies and rhythms.
this was a really nice album, really well produced, good stuff
My disjointed schedule had me listening to this over the course of many days, and while I started to get just slightly mired in the final listen, I was always eager to jump back in and swing with Mr. Veloso. Too bad I wasn't able to understand what he was saying, seems like there's substance to the sound. Viva Veloso!
I don't know anything about tropicália music, but I really enjoyed this.
7.5/10
"Superbacana" was a fav. Whole thing was groovy and fun.
I really enjoyed this despite not understanding most of the lyrics, which reminds me that music is universal. I appreciated the orchestration and varied sounds/styles across tracks.
Brasil is great man
Why yes, I will be listening to “Soy Loco Por Ti America” on repeat for the next month. It’s catchy as shit and fun to dance to. The whole album is enchanting and mesmerizing. I was drawn in from the first song. Plus those Bad Bunny hating racists would probably hate this too.
What an infectious and fun album. This record falls under the genre of 'Tropicália', a style of music that combines Brazilian and African rhythms with British and American pop and psychedelic rock. And it isn't just something that the Wikipedia says, as these elements are very noticeable. The rhythms are incredibly infectious and full of life, and the instrumentation is very detail and a bit experimental, which are traits very characteristic of the music from the regions mentioned before. But not only the use of these elements is what makes this album great, it is also the way they are used to create very dynamic songs with different emotions. A good example is the song 'No Dia Que Eu Vim-Me Embora', which starts very slow, but gets more and more infectious with the incorporation or different instruments, until it slows down again almost at the end to finally explode with a very infectious rhythm, which unfortunately, stops to soon. This might not be the best song, but I do believe is a great example to display how diverse the project sounds, with slower cuts like 'Clarice' or super fun ones like 'Superbacana' or 'Tropicália'. One thing I must say is that, from the song 'Alegria, Alegria', the quality of the production gets more poor and less clear. For instance, the song just mentioned feels a bit unbalanced, as it sounds like everything comes from the right side. In conclusion, this is a very fun experience and a very interesting discovery.
Really enjoyed this. Waiting for more good South American music. I like this more than the rather dated selections on the list still waiting on a solo Jobim album.
Ok, not my usual fare but I really liked this as background music
Brazilian musicians are so much better than pulling off a psychedelic thing that Americans or, even more so, Brits. Probably Brazilians are just much cooler. Love the sinister album cover too.
I grew up listening to punk but I think weird, loose tropicalia may be my retirement home.
Very cool Brazilian music! Love the use of percussion to create such a groove. Tons of interesting instrumentation and different song types on this album.
Seriously loved this album, have downloaded it!
This was a fun album to dig into while listening. It’s a cornerstone of the Brazilian Tropicália movement, blending traditional Brazilian styles with psychedelic rock, British Invasion pop, and American avant-garde. Released during a period of political unrest, it was controversial and got Caetano Veloso arrested and exiled.
Actually a fun album! Was tempted to dance in the office with how upbeat the entire album was!
A lovely record buzzing with subtly psychedelic flourished arrangements and intricate rhythmic layers. The flute in “Clara” would be a prime example, as would the sitar in “Eleanor” or the organ in “Soy Loco por Ti, América.” The record starts right off on a strong note: the jazzy bossa-psych gem “Tropicália” is a clear highlight of Caetano Veloso’s self-titled full-length. Elsewhere, opaque and swirling string arrangements serve as a backdrop for the laid-back tracks that follow. The strings definitely add an intriguing and frankly beautiful touch to the songs, which are rooted in traditional Brazilian styles and African rhythms (again, “Soy Loco por Ti, América” has to be mentioned as a standout) - an art and musical movement that bears the same name as the aforementioned opening tune. Caetano apparently called his debut outing “amateurish and confused.” Well, maybe that only adds to its charm, because it’s a beautiful little marvel. I’d rather say it sounds adventurous and is buzzing with playfulness. By the way, just as strong as it opened, the record closes with the sitar-assisted, psychedelic, surf-rock-infused “Eles.” Nice.
Great cover, decent music!
Great vibes, very into this
Excellent
nice tropicalia
Don’t understand a word, but such a fun album.
Pretty good stuff. My biggest criticism is that some of the songs seem a little too short/unfinished. He has a great voice though. Mid 4.
Very cool. Lovely kitchen atmosphere 😄
Fun and different
New to me, very nice vibe. Great Sunday brunch tunes
Wow. That was a psychedelic lounge experience! Loved it. Nice change and something new to me.
Enjoyable album with an unfortunately low global score.. 3.5/5
I dig the album Caetano Veloso. I am tempted to add it to my Jazzy Dinner Party playlist. But then I would need to change the name of the playlist to Jazzy, Tropicalia Dinner Party and that does not roll off the tongue. Also, it is a lot of work.
Veloso’s 1968 release surprised me, when I think South American music, I assume it is going to be fast paced and high energy. It was interesting to hear the relaxed, chill approach on this album. I really enjoyed it, it was a pleasant listen with good vibes and a touch of psychedelic undertones throughout. My only gripe is that Veloso ruined a great album cover with his menacing glare, kinda annoying actually. Whatever, this was pretty good despite his dumb face. 4 stars
Okay this is a really cool album. Had no idea about this genre of music or the history of this legend. But even without all that it's just an enjoyable listen. And the cover art! Would be cool to play during cocktail hour or dinner at a party. Feels tropical, wistful and fun.
3.5
4.5
I found this to be a very interesting listen. I saw Psych rock as a descriptor, and was a bit worried, but I don’t think that’s a fitting description honestly. I felt this was a really nice vibe for a morning listen.
Delightful!
++: Tropicália, No Dia em que Eu Vim-Me Embora, Alegria, Alegria, Onde Andarás?, Anunciação, Superbacana, Paisagem Útil, Soy loco por ti, América, Ave-Maria, Eles +: Clarice, Clara 9,1/10
Oh behave, where have you been all my life! I enjoyed rolling around on my orange shag carpet, sipping on my cocktail and smoking a slim cigarette, while this album poured into the room. Let's get ready to Rumba. I just hope Caetano was laughing when he approved the pre-print of this album cover. If he takes himself as seriously as that picture suggests, Yipes.
This album makes me think of Miami and the way it rains, which is wild because the artist is Brazilian.
A staple of Brazilian music. It’s a whole vibe, and I’m down for it.
Enjoyable vibe that's consistent throughout. I could listen to this album several times over.
This one was new to me and I loved it! Phenomenal musicianship through out the album. Glad I was introduced to this one, definitely gonna revisit it more!
Wow I am loving this. I don’t know if it’s because they always seem like an oasis in the midst of a desert full of bland English rock, but the international/non-English-language albums on this list have made me realize how much of the world’s music I appreciate. This might be one of my favorite so far. There is a wonderful variety across the tracklist, of instruments, melodies, motifs, styles. It’s fresh and funky — like, are any of these songs in a Tarantino movie? They all could be. Great and fun album. Must-listen #210.
Interesting album, sounded great musically, never really heard anything like it before. Wild!
I always enjoy listening to fun Brazilian music like this.
Very fun album! Will add it to the rotation
This was a fun one. I love this kind of sound. Makes me imagine sipping coffee at a cafe in Rio. Extra credit for the wonderfully weird album art and bizarre looking portrait of Veloso.
Fun & tropical.
Really interesting excellent stuff. Hilda up better than most psychedelia
Really fascinating album. Hard to speak to the historical significance, but I really enjoyed the texture of it and the feeling of it. I really like Caetano's gentle voice and the arrangements feel very cinematic. I feel transported listening to it. A strong argument for the "psychedelic-means-soaked-in-reverb" school of thought.
Not really my kind of music but surprisingly enjoyable.
I’m at a 4. I mean… yeah, that sure sounds like Brazilian music after “cannibalizing” a bunch of genres for itself. AKA, “American-izing” it. It’s just a 60s rock album with a Brazilian flair, and as such, I don’t really know how to rate it other than “I had a pretty good time listening to it.” This album’s never bad, just occasionally a little flat in a way that didn’t make me move or groove as much as the majority of the album did, hence the 4 as opposed to a 5. It’s a fun listen, and a breezy 34 minutes. His vocals are smooth, and the Portuguese language sometimes lends itself to getting him into a slightly rap-adjacent flow state that’s groovy. Only two tracks really fell THAT flat for me (including the closer, sadly), but even then, they’ve still got groovy moments within. As a whole, this is a pretty good album. I’m not sure that it’s one I had to listen to before I died, but I didn’t mind listening to it. It should have a higher average than 2.85, that’s for sure. The floor for this is a 3, and if you didn’t bop your head at least once, I think that speaks a little more about you than the music does. I like it enough to give it a 4, and maybe it’d be a 5 if I got really into the groove on these tracks another day. It’s certainly got the potential. It might be the shadow of “Songs in the Key of Life” looming over this one, I dunno.
This is my first time listening to tropicalia, a fusion of Brazilian and British/American pop/psychedelia that arose in the 60s. I’ve learned through the course of nearly 600 albums is that I really like Brazilian music, so this was very welcome on a Sunday morning.
Meh
Good one
Que divertido e cheio de alegria
This was a lovely break from the endless amount of jazz and overrated dad rock albums. There could have had a little more variation, but it was short enough that I didn’t grow bored of it. Overall it was fun enough, and I will most likely play this again.
I enjoyed this, and tend to quickly get drawn in to this style, but it wasn't quite the pinnacle that I thought it would be. I can't put a finger on what's missing for me - maybe a shade too slow too often? I'm happy to have learned the genre - Tropicalia - so that I can find more from it. This is feel good music, often without knowing what is being said. Think I'm at a 3.5, but leaning higher than lower.
Nice background music
Tropicalia always brings the vibes. Caetano has a lovely sun-kissed voice. Psychedelic bossanova is such a wonderful genre that makes me feel like I’m traveling through a 1960’s Brazilian/Spanish film on a moped.
EN: I really wasn't expecting this album to be half as good as it is! It is very consistent, not long enough to be boring and has its own charm. As a Brazilian, I'm glad my country's albums are being well represented.
I know who Veloso is and I'm familiar with a couple covers of his "Baby" (one of which, we'll eventually get to on here) but I think this is my first time listening to the man himself. I kind of enjoy tropicália and I found this to be a pretty good time.
I guess music is just better when you can't understand the words
See, this is what I wanted the project to give me. I haven't heard of the album, the artist or even the genre before. The psy-rock / samba crossiver album I didn't know my life needed
This is an enjoyable album laid back great vibes
The songs all blend together just a little, but the strings + percussion + infectious singing combo is sure to deliver you a good time.
Really interesting. Especially the historical context of the album.
Tropicalia dreams of Rio
Its a vibe. Good listen. Don't know about the lyrics since it's in Spanish.
Nice to come across something on the list that's completely new to me. It was a solid album and I enjoyed my time with it.
3.5/5
Brazilian people are cool. Also sexy. Some of this feels over the top (ie, a few arrangements),but one mostly digs, especially "Clarice" and "Alegria Alegria" and "Soy Loco." But the whole thing feels sweet and interesting and is most pleasant and interesting to hear, suggesting one needs to spend considerably more time with CV.
This was exactly the sort of thing that I was hoping to encounter when I started out on this project, discovering things that I’d never heard before and which pushed me outside of my comfort zone. This album definitely achieves this - a sonic stew of bossanova, 60s pop and psychedelia with occasional Walker Brothers-esque string backing. In parts it’s quite difficult to put an era, as well as a genre, on it. I enjoyed it all the way through though - no skips here. Throughly enjoyable listening, will look out for it in the wild for sure. 4/5 Standout tracks: Clarice (medley of all sorts of genres) Allegria, Allegria (Animals meets the Byrds doing Dylan covers) Eles (great 60s pysch vibes)
A fun lil romp. He's still making music too! I appreciate learning more about other country/other languages music.
Good mix of styles
Ik vond hem leuk
Quite exotic and charming, I don't know the genre well enough to tell how good this is comparatively to others, but I know I enjoyed it. Smooth delivery and cool combinations of musical elements. 3.9
A great and influential, foundational album of the Tropicalia genre. The genre could do more on later albums with other artists I find. The eclecticism is too strong on this one.
Very intriguing. It won't cease to blindside you with an odd genre fusional instrumental twist and I'm all here for it.
Digging the artwork! It's an unexpectedly fruity funky album!
Wonderful album.
Very Listenable.
Nice brazilian psychedelic rock
This is great
Really enjoyed this. Precious.
Super interesting album. It utilizes all sorts of genres, from bossa nova, to folk, to psychedelic rock. The melodies and rhythms are interesting, catchy, and very, very chill. This album apparently also created the genre of tropicalia, and how many albums can say they created a genre? 4.0/5.0: Great
very interesting album. each track was unique and stayed fresh throughout. im not sure how much i really liked it vs liking the variation it provided but i enjoyed it either way
Great for a sunny walk with a latte
Something very different a very fun, not what I’m used to listening to and I enjoyed it.
that was very lovely! feels like bossa nova's cousin. there were a few songs in the middle that got a little too repetitive for me but overall really pretty and enjoyable.
This was definitely better than I was expecting, and I found the first track, especially to be pretty epic and grand feeling with the build up and the instrumentation. As the album went on, it felt more and more forgettable for me, so I'd give this a 3.5. But for its time, and the way it mixes a lot of influences and then undoubtedly influenced a lot of other music from Brazil and else where, it deserves, I'll bump it up to 4 for this scale.
Couldn't understand a word this guy was singing. But I liked this one, purely for the vibes The Billie Jean cover really threw me off, seemed totally out of place to sing in English for this one song. But he did a great job and put his own twist on it! 4 ⭐️
Fantastic Brazilian music with a psychedelic flair. Lots of different styles are packed into a fairly short album. I’ll definitely play this again, and I’d love to hear more from Caetano Veloso.
Not only have I never listened before, I've never even heard of Veloso. I was pleasantly surprised that Brazilian rhythms weren't particularly foregrounded, in favour of a more general psychedelia.
What a refreshing album. After seemingly weeks of straight rock albums something new. This may be biased based on my recent history but I loved how unique this one is.
fun!! but prob wouldn't listen to again unless study music
This was a blast. Combining psychedelic rock and Brazilian samba was something I never knew I needed to hear. Definitely a good inclusion on the list. Favorites were Clarice, Alegria, Alegria, Onde Andaras, Soy Loco Por Ti America.
Extravagant tropicália with a warm, catchy feel to it. Great stuff.
One of the best record to come out of Brazil and Brazil is quite good at making masterpieces, to say the least!
I'm surprised but really happy that this album founds its way to this challenge. What a great psychedelia/tropicalia and bossa-nova classic from Brazil!
A great album to have on this type of list!
This is really interesting out of the gate with the horror movie screeching present in Tropicalia. The effect is rather eerie in the way that it goes back and forth between those elements and more upbeat. I enjoy the vibe of Clarice -- especially the use of strings. The organ work on No Dia Que Eu Vim-Me Embora gives me some serious Mac Miller Faces vibes. The last three tracks on this album stood out to me. Soy Loco Por Ti America is good clean fun -- love the keys and the swagger of it. Ave-Maria is just pretty with the warm bass and plucked acoustic + horns -- love this one. And Eles to round things out is one of my favorites on the record. Love the psychedelic elements in here -- especially the call and response between organ and guitar. While I don't see myself listening to this all the time, I thought this was a fantastic album. At once experimental and inviting -- there are classic song structures, but some interesting elements intermixed and plenty of variation to keep things interesting. The whole album has a delightfully warm and dusty element to its production. This is a squishy 4 / 5 for me.
Short, enjoyable listen. Absolutely nothing wrong with an album like this. Fun quasi-psychedelia. This is a 4 star that I am unlikely to revisit. Was thinking 3.5 stars, but the fact that this is from 1968 is incredible. I figured it was from the 80's or 00's before I checked.
Quite nice. Alegria Alegria stands out as a single. Was a bit hungover on first listen, so I should probably revisit.
I’ve been listening and liking Portuguese music and this increases my love for this kind
Groovy and fun
Lots of interesting things going on here. A lot of Spanish guitar and vocal throughout, but it really gets interesting for me when he works in a little psych here and there. Digging the organ work on a lot of this too. I had to go through this one twice to really get the feel for it. It was a little disjointed in its attempt to fuse multiple styles but in this context I liked that. Felt like I was along for the ride as the artist went through a discovery process. Veloso is basically defining the Tropicália sound here.
7.5/10
One has essentially no knowledge of what's being sung about and quite limited insight into Tropicalia generally, but finds this a pleasure to listen to and sneaky-wild, out-there. "Clarice" and "Soy Loco" are the highlights. The "antropofagia" works well, for the most part, though some of the over-the-top arrangements mighta been dialed back to benefical effect. Maybe that's why CV wasn't down generally with this output. And which is the clearer validator of a record's quality and impact: having an entire genre named after a song or being forced out by the military junta? Definitely an artist one Yanks (and Brits) should get to know better.
I’m putting this on at my next soirée for all the cool cats and kitties.
Even though it's in Portuguese and the recording quality isn't great, the music was really interesting with its mix of samba and rock and it was just plain fun to listen to.
I've never heard of Caetano Veloso, but reading the wikipedia threatened to send me down a whole bunch of rabbit holes of '60s art and music movements in Brazil. I'm short on time, but I'm tucking this album and the Tropicalia genre in my pocket for warm weather, great vibes.
This is fun. Exactly the kind of international surprise I wanted to discover in this project. Brazilian psychadelica was not a genre I saw coming. But I am into it. Fabulous.
I've returned to the music of Brazil for the second time in this list, and I've found myself very interested in the sounds of Brazilian rock and pop being opened up in front of me, like an ornate jewelry box full of untold fortunes. the anglosphere certainly brought the guitar a level of international recognition, but the way other countries ran with the possibilities it created, combining it with their own local flair, is what makes listening to an album like this first self-titled record from Caetano Veloso so interesting. I recognize a lot of the sounds offered up by these songs; both on the acoustic and electric end, the influence of British and American psych (USian might be more appropriate here, but it's also clunkier) is undeniable, but there's obviously a ton of traditional samba and bossa nova elements underneath it all. there's actually not a ton to say about this on a musical front, because the charm of this music speaks for itself, even if you don't understand a word of the language being spoken. that being said, learning about the political context in which this music existed was pretty fascinating! lyrically and compositionally, it's fairly benign on the surface, but it turns out that that's by design; a lot of these songs were written in a way that allowed Veloso to express some legitimately radical beliefs on unity and community solidarity without Brazil's military government being able to notice. I wouldn't have been able to guess that the style and scene of Tropicália had such a strong sentiment behind it just from the sound of these songs, but it certainly deepened my appreciation of the material. in the grand scheme of the little bits of Brazilian music I've been exposed to, this might not be the thing I return to most often, but I give Veloso a ton of props for creating a form of protest music that sounds uplifting and optimistic, rather than navel-gazing and futilist. strong 7/10.
Never heard of this before. Brilliant!
A pretty good album, I don't usually listen to song in another language so it was interesting. I liked Eles the most.
Really interesting artist. Great suggestion! I look forward to listening to more of his work
It was really pleasant. Certain i am definitely going to listen to again
I really started to get into it at Alegria, Alegria.
3-4
Beautiful combination of sounds. I liked it a lot. I agree with whoever said this would be good cooking music Favorites: "Tropicália", "Clarice", "Alegria, Alegria", "Paisagem Útil"
very nice, he gets an extra star for the Hail Mary
Erg van genoten. Zeker wat leuke en interessante momenten, maar niet even nummer is even sterk als de ander (supercabana bijvoorbeeld), daarom helaas net geen 5 ster
I dig it. Some fun numbers on here.
I’d say this is one of the better foreign speaking albums I’ve heard on this list. Foreign if you only speak American, like me. Lovely vocals and instrumentation, no clue what the guy’s saying, but the writing goes hard. This album isn’t quite bossa nova which is surprising given how much of a powerhouse the genre was in 1960s Brazil. Caetano does not care. He makes a wonderful album anyway. Not life changing or anything, but quite enjoyable. 4/5
Discovering albums like this is the best thing about doing this project. A Brazilian album from the 60s combining bossa nova and other classic South American grooves and styles with a Zombies-esque psych rock sound and some Scott Walker style string arrangements thrown in there for good measure? Absolutely yes please thanks very much
Fun jazzy 70's rock from Brazil. I'd definitely like to come back to this one again.
Very nice!
Not really my thing, but not bad.
Every time I hear Romance languages I’m like man English sureeee does sound ugly
Caetano Veloso is the debut solo album by Caetano Veloso, originally released in 1968. This is what I started doing this challenge for. Those true hidden gems. This is some great Tropicala, but it's mixed with some psychedelic elements. I'm talking sitar, tabla, etc. with lush orchestral arrangements. The whole album has a "summer of love" feel. That is also reflected in the album cover. Now that I think about it, this reminds me a lot of the "Sunshine Superman" album by Donovan. Great find.
A cracker for a sunny day, with a great mix of genres and styles, and some wonderful guest vocalists. Sounds much more modern than when it was out - especially "Alegria, Alegria", which has had quite the story! I really enjoyed the whole album, and will explore more Latin American music once I have the time.
A delight!
Wow, I actually liked this a lot, and I wasn’t expecting to! Very atmospheric, enjoyable, and varied. This is the sort of thing that’s great do put on while doing housework to liven up the mood.
Good stuff, and it's great to have some less anglo-centric music for a change. It's a dreamy, atmospheric album. Favorite track: "Tropicália."
Another album from a different culture that is wonderful listening to.
A really nice smooth album. Things like this make me grateful for this list
Not sure why he looks so moody? This is a nice upbeat album!
Wow I like this a lot
I am not super familiar with Brazilian music (though this album falls under the Tropicalia sub-genre) but I found this introduction through Caetano Veloso unsurprisingly pleasant. The main thing I noticed is that there is no distinct sound present here, the songs shift sounds constantly, like going from being psychedelic to baroque-influenced to jazz at the drop of a dime, while still maintaining a South American touch to it all. I loved the multi-phased, ominously romantic 'Clarice'. The strings that kick off 'Palsagem Util' are utterly gorgeous - this song has easily the lushest composition here. There's something so fuzzy and surreal about the mixing on this album as well that I can't quite put a finger on. As for the vocals, I couldn't understand much but Caetano proves to be a charismatic (and talented) singer as displayed on songs like 'Tropicalia' and 'Superbacana'. Greatly enjoyed my time with this - it's quite the disorienting experience at times though I'd say it generally works in this album's favour.
maybe closer to a 4.5 - had an absolute blast with this! a lot of it felt quite cinematic, a sense of grandeur that was so fun to listen to
This really won me over! It was pleasant and pretty from the beginning but I loved how mildly psychedelic it got with shades of chamber-y, easy to listen to pop music!
A fun album that made me want to dance!
really enjoyed this gentleman's album titled Transa which i remember listening to vividly because it was the day after my birthday (may 20) in 2020 during covid lockdowns lol - anyways it was a bit funny to revisit his music as it kinda brought me back to at time and a place, BUT the album is really nice and pleasant - really enjoyable.
The cover art is delightful, a tropical mother of dragons, but inexplicably stamped with a glowering visage smack in the middle. I'm afraid it affected my experience of the album. Delightful music dominated by an oddly loud and seemingly joyless vocal track. On second listening I'm being a tad unfair. This is breezy and fun. The brief appearance of Gal was a nice surprise. Out of curiosity I took a screenshot of the lyrics of Clara and gave it to Claude and maybe it isn't so breezy after all: Quando a manhã madrugava - When the morning dawned early Calma, alta, clara - Calm, high, clear Clara morria de amor - Clara was dying of love Faca de ponta, flor e flor - Pointed knife, flower and flower Cambraia branca sob o sol - White cambric under the sun Cravina branca, amor - White carnation, love Cravina, amor, cravina e sonha - Carnation, love, carnation and dreams A moça chamada Clara - The girl called Clara Água alma lava - Water soul washes Alva cambraia no sol - White cambric in the sun Galo cantando, cor e cor - Rooster singing, color and color Pássaro preto, dor e dor - Black bird, pain and pain O marinheiro, amor - The sailor, love Distante amor que a moça sonha só - Distant love that the girl dreams alone O marinheiro sob o sol - The sailor under the sun Onde andará o meu amor? - Where will my love go? Onde andará o amor? - Where will love go? No mar, amor, no mar sonha - In the sea, love, in the sea dreams Se ele ainda lembro o meu nome - If he still remembers my name Longe, longe, onde - Far, far, where Onde estiver numa onda num bar - Where he might be on a wave in a bar Numa onda que quer me levar - On a wave that wants to take me Para o mar de água clara - To the sea of clear water Clara, Clara, Clara - Clara, Clara, Clara Ouço meu bem me chamar - I hear my dear calling me Faca de ponta, dor e dor - Pointed knife, pain and pain Cravo vermelho no lençol - Red carnation on the sheet Cravo vermelho, amor - Red carnation, love Vermelho, amor, cravina e galos - Red, love, carnation and roosters E a moça chamada Clara - And the girl called Clara Clara, Clara, Clara - Clara, Clara, Clara Alma tranquila de dor - Soul tranquil with pain Claude didn't think the song is necessarily about suicide but I sure do.
i listened to the album, relistened through to help decide on a rating, went on a wikipedia journey because of the album, and at this point i can say i think i pretty well appreciate having had the experience in the end that is the spirit of the site, and today has encouraged it
I've really appreciated being introduced to all these great Brazillian artists by this site.
Enjoyable, but like many psychedelic albums the poor mix sounded like someone mumbling over another record. Or maybe I’m missing the point of psychedelic albums.
Me Gustan
It is cool how 60s music has similar vibes regardless of language. This could fit right in with the Kinks or Byrds in my opinion. Obviously if I could understand the lyrics that would be great but I can’t punish the artist for that. Low 4
Loving this. No idea what he's talking about but it feels so bright and pleasant. Also loved the different influences and styles and there were some nice melodic hooks. Lol also that death glare is incredible -- what I wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall for the art direction process
Samba, psychedelia and revolution!
Delightful Tropicália record!
Yet another reminder for me to listen to more Brazilian 60’s records.
Sound ok
Listened a few times and it grew on me. Fun. Sexy. Relaxing
I let the auto-generated playlist this album generated keep going. It put me in a great mood. Definitely adding this one to the list
musical dissidents get my vote.
If the music is from Brazil you already know it’s going to be good!
After an unfortunate false start with the Tidal link taking me to a live album, I had more success with the actual album listed. There's a decent variety of styles and it doesn't go on too long.
I do enjoy the exposure to the Brazilians. I didn't fall in love love love with this one, but I enjoyed it.
While some of this seemed a little ramblier than I might prefer, I did enjoy listening to this while driving across the heartland of America.
I love the wild mix of styles here. Some bossa nova stuff is tough to get into for me, but mixing that with elements of psych rock and pop really makes for a cool experience. I'm really glad to learn about this album. I just hope he doesn't come through the screen out of that picture and murder me...
Traditional Brazilian music crossed with summery 60s psychedelic pop? Yes please. More of this sort of thing. 3.5 / 4
This was super fun. Big mid-60s energy. Not quite sure why it has such a low rating. It’s a breezy easy record.
first listen lovely record, some moments sounded really modern
A nice bossa nova Brazilian album. I don’t speak Portuguese so I can’t comment on the lyrics, but the album has a pleasant vibe throughout - not unlike a lot of reggae or early Jimmy Buffett.
A snake slithering up towards a woman's chest while she caresses a dragon breathing fire underneath the attention grabbing typography of Caetano Veloso's name, as his serious yet sinister expression both belies and defies the explosive cornucopia that is surging throughout the first of his several self-titled albums. Changing times had come to Brazil, as the aural molasses of bossa nova became looked down upon by the counterculture and gave way to a far more exciting endeavor: Tropicália. Indeed not only an album came of it (the Sgt. Pepper's of the movement) but the first track of this album is named after it, giving an impression that things were going to be adventurous from here on out. And while it may sound at times cluttered and scattershot, ultimately what came from it is one of the more defining records of the age; one that makes the listener feel that they're encountered the changing of the tides happening in real time. Favorites: Tropicália, Clarice, Algeria, Algeria, Anunciação, Superbacana, Clara, Soy loco por ti, América, Eles.
Never heard this guy before and I was pleasantly surprised. I always love Brazilian artists. Top tracks: Soy Loco Por Ti América
Album was alright, but the story behind its reception gave it an extra .5 4/5
Nice listening with a warm drink.
Interesting rhythms and melodies
My first foray into spanish music and it is a hit. Song after song to make you feel like you lost your lover to another man, and the songs to make you feel like you killed that man.
To guapo
Me ha encantado, gran descubrimiento. La portada es una maravilla
# Playlist track - Alegria, Alegria # Notes - It's really cool to look back and hear Caetano's debut album. - Having heard multiple versions of some songs, it's nice to experience their original form.
I couldn't understand the lyrics because they were in Portuguese but I enjoyed the sound and vibe of the album
Very interesting. I never listened to Tropicalia before. I can dig it.
Surprising and refreshing!
Great flow and rhythm. You do not need to speak the language to capture the feel. Background party music. Top shelf!
Yeah I'll have this. I love anything tropicalia related, the opening track is fantastic (though sounds slightly different here to the version i know well). Don't really know the rest of this record but it's a whole mood, and it's good.
Regular
It's a vibe!
Feels soothing just listening to his tones… since I only speak English.
gorgeous
Kubrick stare
Surprisingly chill and melodic. Lazy Sunday kind of music but it hit right for me. Great vocals throughout.
Absolutely loved this! Dancing in my car to all these things. Could tell it was Brazilian for some reason. Slight Gilberto vibes which is always good.
A very cool melding of psychedelic + salsa. Definitely worth at least a single listen.
A fun blend of Psych Rock and Samba. I don't understand a word of Portuguese but it was still fun to listen to. Some of the songs passed me by a bit but there was a groovy tropical vibe to the whole thing. Maybe I'll come back to this eventually. Honestly, I think it'd be good cooking music? I really need to make a playlist out of songs I find good to cook with. Favourite: Tropicália
I Like the mix of everything going on here, and the fact that it's in Portuguese makes it especially fun. I'm here for it!
Really dig it, this is the kind of music I love discovering thanks to this list. Caetano Veloso's self titled album is a different sound for Latin music, but I kinda dig how it's almost a sort of Prog-Latino. 4/5
Musically very nice, but not our cup of tea
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Clara, Soy loco por ti America
Nesten like bra som jorge ben jor!
"Caetano Veloso" is the debut solo album by Brazilian composer, singer, guitarist, writer and political activist Caetano Veloso. The musical genres listed are tropicália and pyschedelic rock. Eclectic assortment of influences include pyschedelia, rock, pop, Indian music, bossa nova and Bahian. For Sure. It is credited as one of the first tropicália efforts which means a union of popular and avant-garde styles. Brazillian artist Hélio Oiticica delivering a speech opens "Tropicália." Multiple percussions come in. Strings and horns give an air of pyschedelia. The rhythm becomes a slow bossa nova beat. This a very good and successful example of his pyschedelic-bossa nova fusion. "Alegria, Alegria" starts with pyschedelic guitar and an organ swirl. The percussion is a tambourine beat. It's slow then goes fast and back again. The vocals are very 60's pop. "Superbacana" is more active and sped up. A more prominent string orchestra with a bossa nova beat. It's very much a fun song. "Paisagem útil" is a lush string-laced bossa nova. This is more traditional and very much baroque. A love song and ode to Rio. The beat picks up in "Soy Loco por Tí, América." A harder edge rhythm close to a Columbian Cumbria and Cuban mambo. The title translates to "I am crazy for you, America." I think that's South not North. There are some great song examples of successfully creating a fusion particularly the pyschedelic rock-bossa nova fusion one. The album goes into a variety of styles. Nothing too extreme. The orchestral and overall arrangements are excellent. I enjoyed this album quite a bit.
Tropicália - 9/10 Clarice - 8/10 No Dia Que Eu Vim-Me Embora - 7/10 Alegria, Alegria - 9/10 Onde Andaras - 8/10 Anunciação - 8/10 Superbacana - 8/10 Paisagem Util - 8/10 Clara - 8/10 Soy Loco Por Ti America - 9/10 Ave-Maria - 8/10 Eles - 8/10 TOTAL - 98/120
quite a pleasant listen i must say
Groovy! What's not to like? Nothing resonated so fiercely to call me to repeat listen, but it was an enjoyable ride. Might listen to the whole again.
Lovely Tropicalia album through and through. Maybe can do without 'Ave Maria', but the rest is just perfect. Awesome record.
Cool Brazilian fusion pop
Another pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed the mix of Latin styles and 60s psychedelic rock.
