chillll
Ok
This wasn’t bad, would be good to listen to this on a beach somewhere.
Not bad but not my style
For '68 sounded pretty good, smooth easy listening, some catchy vibes, not bad, wish I knew more
Interesting example of Tropicália mixed with Música Popular Brasileira.
this was very funky, very chill. felt a little donovan (complimentary). i love bosso nova as a background noise for work and this was a nice morning coffee and puttering around listen. liked: alegria alegria, paisagem útil
Mira, es un disco psicodélico que pasa bastante bien.
Kept me interested.
It's got vibes
I'm not well versed on Brazilian music. I enjoy Seu Jorge, but that's as far as I've listened. I love latin music in general. This album sounds mellow. It was pretty good, but I wasn't blown away. The last two songs were my favorite, Ave Maria and Eles. I wasn't completely turned off, so I'll listen to a few more albums from him. This one is a 3 from me.
не смогла найти, где его послушать полностью реально.... то что услышала прикольное веселенькое, не мой вайб, но в целом приятно послушать
6/10… bossa nova
Enjoyable, if not a big standout. 6/10
I was not previously familiar with this album, but I am aware of Caetano Veloso and Tropicália. This album has the sound I was expecting, and some of the songs are definitely interesting. It is good enough that I would listen again, but I would rate this one below Os Mutantes self-titled album from the same year and genre.
Funny I got this album right after the Manu Chao one, the Latin 1-2 combo. Didn't mind it but the only song that has stuck with me in the 3 days since listening to it was superbacana.
The album picked up steam from Soy loco por ti America until the end. Curious project
not sure what I was expecting exactly but it wasn't this. not bad but it just didn't hit either.
Musically, it's not bad. Lyrically, I don't know what this means. My options in school were music or Spanish, and then French or Spanish, and those choices were made for me by my parents already buying a saxophone, and the shame of taking a "remedial" class. I like the flow and the feel, but not enough to breach the language barrier.
A nice listen and as a plus now I can say I'm cultured!!
Wow so let’s start with the obvious, this is easily a greatest of all time type of album cover. The colors and artwork are so influential to their contemporaries and even to this day this style is synonymous with psychedelic rock. And with this obvious W out of the way we can talk about how great the actual music is. There’s a ton of variety for the late 60s, as well as insane execution on all the different sounds. The biggest disconnect for me was obviously the language barrier, I didn’t translate the songs so I have no idea what they are about other than some light context clues. But that’s always gunna hurt an album to some extent, but I also think some of the album was alittle slower and lost some of my attention. But that’s always gunna being said I think this is an incredibly impressive debut album, and it definitely makes me want to look into the rest of their career to see how their sound matured and changed over time.
Very much a rollercoaster of an album. Definitely has its share of highs and lows both emotionally and musically. Undeniable amounts of energy and passion that you can't help but appreciate keep it fairly entertaining
In my mental file cabinet it lives near Os Mutantes. (ntm.)
Y'know, I gotta tell you, there's something I appreciate about this album. I mean, after writing two reviews in a row that exceeded 2,000 words, hey, it's nice to get one I know I won't have too much to say about. That's not really a knock against this album; there just... Isn't too much I really wanna say about it. And I feel like I should be able to, huh? Not only is this my group's first return to Brazil in months, but it's also a look at a movement I wasn't even aware of 'til now: tropicália. Essentially, it's where you take Brazilian rhythms and such and mix 'em together with more American forms, like psychedelic rock and baroque pop. That should be real interesting, shouldn't it? Imagine what they could sound like mashed together. At any rate, it should be more inspiring to write about than if we'd gotten another standard 60's psych rock album. Yet... Y'know, it's a nice sound. I'll say that much: I enjoyed listening to it. As mood music or audial wallpaper, I can totally give this thing a pass and then some. But tryna take it as something I'd actively want to listen to and engage with... I'unno, it's just not that exciting? Like, yeah, this sure is bossa nova by way of psychedelic rock — and? I think it speaks to me that the most interesting parts of this album have nothing to do with the music. For one, the guy's photo on the cover is just... Oh, wow. Try to look more like a sexy serial killer in a TV show, eh? And then despite me listening to the "2006 remaster" of these tracks, some of them still somehow sounded like absolute ass? I'unno if that's just how they always sounded or if they were somehow screwed up in the remaster, but legit, I thought my headphones were dying. That's how distracting they were. But, yeah, that's really all I hafta say about this album. And it's like, I'm always glad to get some more worldly music, of course. Any album we get that doesn't feed into the book editor's absolute love of the British is great. I just wish this album had a bit more to chew on like any of the other Brazilian albums we've gotten. It's for sure no GETZ/GILBERTO or CLUBE DA ESQUINA. And it's probably not a great thing that I'm openly touting how little I had to say about it in comparison to other records I've gotten recently... But that's just how the dice roll sometimes, I guess. I'll still give it my approval, but don't go expecting to have your mind blown or anything. Just remember, it's not your headphones that're messing up.
I guess it’s ok.
This is unexpectedly kinda nice. Not nice enough to regularly listen to though. In some ways it sounds more dated than a lot of psychedelic English music.
This was enjoyable. Not the best thing I’ve ever listened to but not the worst. Some good songs on here but nothing stood out.
It has been ages since I've listened to Tropicalia and back then it was pretty much just Os Mutantes. I have since grown tired of most psychedelic music so this may be a tough listen. First track is pleasant enough and goes a few places to keep it from being boring as the Pet Shop Boys would say. I'm guessing Caetano appears a couple of times on the Luaka Bop boxset I have of their first 3 Brazil comps. His name carries a lot of weight. I feared this was a Donovan album when I first saw the album cover. Not to be so hard on Donovan, I like his big hits. "Soy loco por ti, América" is the standout song for me although in kinda a novelty way I will hold onto this one because I too am crazy for you, America. I love and hate ya!
This album honestly makes me feel like I am in a romantic mystery film or something of the sort. I enjoy the percussion and the slow feel with the acoustic guitar. I do not speak Portuguese, so I am unsure of what the lyrics are saying, but this is a nice album to sit back to while you are relaxing or doing simple, repetitive tasks. Even typing this, it is just nice to have on in the background because it is not very distracting, although a part of this is also likely because I am not as focused on lyrics since I don't know Portuguese. I appreciate the music, but it is also not fully my taste. I can see why people would like it, and if I knew the lyrics I would also likely appreciate the songs more. I haven't listened to much Brazilian music, but this was a fair intro. My favourite songs were - Superbacana (Loved the upbeat energy) - Clarice (Enjoyed the acoustic guitar and slow feel)
My first time hearing the artist. Really nice bossa-nova style music. Good background music while driving. 3.5/5
Interesting... Might want to listen to it again.
Kinda wild.
I listened to this album with my mum, and she described it the best “If I was in the 60’s and at a bistro, this is the perfect music that would be playing behind all the banter”. Perfectly summed up, it’s nicely spaced and has enough interesting stuff to be like “oooh that was nice from x”
Fairly solid Brazilian album
glad I found this album. So sweet, love it even though I don't understand the language. It makes me feel like I am in one of those old movies
Upbeat, enjoyable time. Probably couldn't pick the music up out of a line up, but I could recognize the artists name if I saw it again and say I liked it
Why does this man look like he wants to kill me?
cute, would probably not come back though
Good sound, wish that I could have understood what he was saying though.
I wish I knew Portuguese
Normally it's not a big deal for me that I can't understand an international album but this one seemed to have a lot of emphasis on its lyrics as many of them were supposed to be political statements. I don't speak Portuguese so all of that is kinda lost on me. Musically it didn't really seem to be doing anything, just kinda all over the place and not in a super enjoyable way.
interesting listen & would be fine to have this on again as background music. good variety in tempos
Enjoyed this. Felt like I had a brief holiday for its duration.
Generally I enjoy this type of bossa-like (at least that's what it sounds like to me) music once every now and then, and it always brings me in good mood. For me it's hard to pick out selected tracks here that are better or worse than the other. It mostly gels together into one experience, and it was a good one. If I think about what type of music I consider the best, this doesn't come to mind though. While I enjoy it in certain settings, it's not something I'm really passionate about nor see myself putting on as something else than background music or for thematical reasons. I guess I just feel knowledgeable in this genre to know how it stands against similar works.
Psychedelia with a twist! In this case, the twist comes from samba influences. I honestly enjoyed it, the samba touch set it apart from many of the other similar albums we've come across on this list. The most memorable track was Superbacana. The very nasal singing of the course made it an earworm, though I still can’t decide if it’s good or just plain annoying. The closer, Eles, was also a strong track. I could easily imagine this album being featured in a highbrow film. 3 star.
this was fun 👍
I saw someone else say this album is "kitchen music" which is a great way to say this is the music you have on in the background while cooking or having people over. There's a lot of cool shit on here, quite frankly the guy's voice almost gets in the way of some of the interesting music and sounds that are here. And he has a good voice, that's not a slam on him...I just find the actual instruments and effects used to be the real winner here. I liked this more than I thought I would, still not sure how often I'd return to it or if I would return to it but I'm glad I listened to it and learned about it.
Upon researching the powerful effect of this music, I was intrigued at what I was hearing during the first song. Tropicália is a neat tune that aims to enlighten the listener and I was hoping that there was more of that on this record. The rest had 3 great songs and a handful of noticeable but fast passing tunes. I wasn’t going to get much from the lyrics since I don’t speak Portuguese, so my main focus was in the melody and the instrumentals around it. When the two elements both hit a catchy mark, that’s when I liked the record the most. When they seemed to stall for too long or lacked much power, the song went right through. This isn’t my first album from Brazil (that would be Jorge Ben Jor), but it’s one that I can respect for what it did against a dictatorship. I get down a little bit, not too much. Viva Brasil (6/10, 3/5 on this scale)
A nice change of pace
Yup that’s Brazilian!
- entspannt und geht in die Beine 3 – War okay / Interessant 👌 Solides Album, einige gute Momente oder Ideen. Vielleicht nichts, was ich nochmal hören würde, aber spannend zu kennen.
Mixed on this one. On one hand, it's interesting. It's different from what I'm used to and it's an eclectic yet accomplished mix of various styles. On the other hand, I often find dissonant psychedelia difficult or outright painful to listen to, and there's a bit too much of that on here. So it was an interesting experience, but I wouldn't revisit this one.
This album sounds like a the soundtrack for a weird rom com from the 60s where a man down on his luck goes to Rio for business and meets a flighty, free spirited woman on Copacabana Beach. They begin what will become a whirlwind romance that turns into something more serious at the end of the movie. Is it a good album? I don't really know. It's not bad. It's kind of fun to have on in the background maybe. But it doesn't make me want to listen to anything else he's done. I'm curious about the choice of that photo for the cover though.... 3/5
A fun Brazilian (?) album. Kinda bossa nova kinda psychedelic, very good. I really enjoyed a lot of this but I didn't love his voice. I feel like that's what can make or break albums for me as discovered by doing this everyday. I didn't care if I finished the album but I didn't dislike any of the songs. Another solid 3 for me.
Fear set into me when I saw the year and album cover art - I was worried this would be another psychedelia project. I'm so happy to be wrong - its not even an english-speaking album! Much needed. An opening track that's a bit of a facade, as it's all grand and energetic, while the next few songs are more loungey and mild. "Alergria, Alegria" is a really interesting crossroads of the sounds of it's time and the sounds of it's place of origin. Brazilian psych rock? I've never heard anything like it before. Caetano Veloso has a super unique, super recognizable voice. The way he glides over the waiting-room bossanova on "Anunciacao" is easy on the ears. The way he pronounces 'copacabana' on "Superbacana" is by far my highlight of the record - this song is so short and sweet and fun. 3/5 I feel like im on aa beach in Brazil
Reading about the album prior to listening, I was pretty interested to get into it. Unfortunately for me, it was mostly underwhelming. I enjoyed the last few songs the most, but overall it wasn’t as “fun” musically as I’d hoped it would be. I didn’t find it hard to listen to, but my expectations were likely a bit too high.
The blueprint of the entire Tropicália movement, I think? I mean, the opening track is what gave the movement its name. It is basically a brazilian take on the psychedelic sounds of the time with more complex harmonic progressions and biting political commentary. And while politics are a big part, they are not necessary to enjoy the music. It's pretty good. Key tracks: Tropicália
I enjoyed this! The collection of different influences and genres was executed very well, good listen.
Les genre 30 premières secondes font mal à la tête et après c'est un peu tout pareil
Lyrics didn’t understand, music was Latin with some bite, quite enjoyable
first non-English album I've tried. It was fun, I liked his vocal diversity.
Good background music, not as refreshing as some of the other instrumental sounds from before. Thought the dude made the album a little bit worse than it shouldve been but I liked how there was a nice medley of arrangements that allowed me to sample music from all different styles
When you think of Brazil you probably think of either this music or the Getz/Gilberto bossa nova. It’s good and worth listening to, but not going to be in my regular rotation. Also why did this guy choose to put himself looking like a serial killer dead center of his album cover?
really a 4 but i don't speak Portuguese
Songs are short, quick and happy tropical vibe.
This album had fun vibes and a cool variety of sounds and instruments and vocals. Favorite song was Soy Loco Por Ti America.
Easy to listen to, some nice guitar. Never heard of the singer or the album, so it was a nice change
Okay, okay. Samba and psychedelic rock, I see you. I can't really judge this against anything else as it sounds so unique (to me). I enjoyed it, though.
Didnt hate or love this. Didnt offer much to get my teeth into, just kind of floated along in the background sounding sunny.
It’s no Os Mutantes but it’s clearly what you should expect Brazilan tropicalia tunes from the 60’s to sound like. Patio music for swingers. Bubbly fizzy tickle your nose pop party tunes. I liked Anunciação.
I feel like I should be wearing a way more colorful outfit and sipping a tropical drink while sitting poolside watching beautiful people do beautiful things.
Koulunkello- / auton peruutusäänille sekä super superille ei voi olla vähän naurahtamatta. Minä vanha bossa novan rakastaja en voi olla viihtymättä.
Some nice bits in this album and maybe in he right setting would work better but not for me. Stand out song - Soy loco por Ti America
Interesting album. I liked it.
had dit toch iets beter verwacht... voor iemand die voor zijn muziek naar de gevangenis ging...
For the most part, I've enjoyed the Brazilian albums on this list. Good length. High 3.
Album cover kinda threw me off but otherwise pretty good
Good
I enjoyed this as background cooking music, but it didn't stand out enough to be more than that.
Sick record. Some odd stuff but a classic.
A fairly enjoyable mashup of 60s psych and samba. I wish I had more to say about it.
Cool - not a style of music I normally listen to but still cool
Pretty good. Felt more like background music but more bc it’s not my typical style and lyrics weren’t in English. 3.5
3
This was okay
For a foreign language album, this was actually pretty enjoyable. I did feel towards the end that it'd be a lot better if I could understand the lyrics, but I like what he's going for here. Short songs keep things fresh. 5.75/10 (2.875/5)
I know this album.. kinda. I remember the cover vividly and from listening to a few tracks its the "weird" album my parents had. I never understood why they had an album where you didn't understand the lyrics. I really need to look up why Brazilian arts got sold like they did in the 70's. Onto the album. It's fun. No clue what dude is singing about other than Soy loco por ti, America. Cause even my dumbass can translate that one. Seriously the album is good it's got a nice rhythm even in the slower songs. It's well worth a listen or three. I'm not sure if it will make it into rotation but I've listened to it a few times today and enjoyed it.
I want to give this a 4 so bad but because I dont speak great espanol it is sadly getting a 3. It wouldnt even be better in english - I just wont revisit it.
He said Coca Cola
I experimented a lot of his catalog. Interesting but not anything I would listen to regularly.
This album just didn't really stand out to me much. I feel like Samba is pretty good, but this was just a bit too monotonous to do much with the genre. Only the first and last tracks realy stood out to me at all. Favorite Track: Tropicália
Nice. Not knowing the language had to judge as an atmospheric companion. It definitely was nice to have on while driving or working. Enjoyed it. Wonder what Portugiese speakers would make of it.
At turns pleasant, then grating, then breezy, then repetitive. Three city for me
this was fine, some good tracks throughout but not super memorable on the whole. and sadly not excellent like some of the other brazilian albums we've had. maybe i missed something but it just didn't really click for me. with that said, the last track got me good with the hammond organ jump scare. that was the absolute last thing i was expecting to hear to close out this album. props to you caetano favorites: tropicalia, alegria alegria, supercabana, soy loco por ti america, eles
latin, 1968 -> 3
Better than I would have expected, based on the cover, the era, and the fact that it's sung in Portuguese. It felt a bit exotic-lite. Many of the songs were simply someone's name repeated quite a few times, which might as well have been in English. Although there were flashes of what I would think of as Latin America music, there were also a whole load of obviously western influences too. For me, that was actually a good thing, as I generally don't like world music. On that basis, this gets 3 stars, but a strong 3 stars.
Hmmm mmm mm mmmmm hm um a mm
Enjoyed it, didn't understand a.word.of it but would happily give it another listen Creepy/cool album artwork too.
Sixties Brazilian pop fun. A moustachioed Austin Powers strutting across the beach in an indecent pair of budgie smugglers stops and peers over the top of his shades. Wink to camera. Strut on.
Fun but expected
3.5
Decent
Eu amo Brasil but not the best tropicalia I've heard from here, still some great songs though
1967 and this sound is aside what is the core music of this year. I enjoyed it.
Didn’t understand the language but understood the vibes
3 - I dunno, it was okay. The type of music someone would put on at a dinner party to show how musically diverse they are.
I'm pretty sure this guy has a different album that's been setbreak music. It works in that format because setbreak is always weird but not really otherwise
An interesting mix
This album was probably my favorite of the non-English albums I’ve gotten so far. Clarice was beautiful but the rest were just… fine. So this one is middle of the road
Despite the creepy cover, decent music.
If there was a scene in one of my projects that has some montages or a timelapse or some sort, I would use songs from this album.
Brasilianisch
this was nice, probably not something i'd seek out on my own but i love brazilian music. reminded me of Milton Nascimento and the like
"Soy Loco Por Ti América" is a huge highlight, but the rest of the album is just alright. Some odd production where the left ear sounds muted at parts though
Waves of good and ok
very well produced just not my vibe
This is an interesting and diverse record with some beautiful harmonies throughout, though I wouldn't say that I found it to be compelling overall.
I listened to this and then forgot about it and couldn’t for the life of me remember what it was. ‘Tropicalia’, apparently. Down the middle. Easy listening but doubt I’ll be popping this on.
no está completo en spotify :(( pero lo que sí aparece me gustó bastante
It was fine, nothing super notable
It was refreshing to listen to something culturally different, however, it was just ehhh off of first impression.
Brazilian! Three stars, I guess.
It's very much not my thing, but I can recognize its talent. That said, since it's very much not my thing, I suppose I can't know for sure if it's especially talented for its genre. It's Girl from Ipanema lounge music to me, though I acknowledge that's a lazy, uninformed comparison. I'm going to give it a 3. I don't hate it, I just wouldn't listen to it on purpose, but if it was on in the background for some reason I don't think I'd object.
Interesting album would have been good except for that one song with the recorder that was very bad
I think if I was in a pepper mood I'd enjoy this more. Fun instrumentation but I kept getting a little annoyes by the vocal stylings.
It's good but I can't imagine I'll listen to it again. Except when making Bolognese apparently.
1960s pop meets Brazil in a way that was apparently so radical it got Caetano Veloso arrested and exiled—an impressive feat for what sounds, at least on the surface, like a fun and pleasant record. Blending bossa nova, psychedelia, and tropicalia, the album is full of colorful, exotic-sounding arrangements that make for an enjoyable listen, even if it never quite grabs me in a big way. Tracks like Tropicália burst with energy, mixing Brazilian rhythms with an experimental, almost Beatles-esque touch, while softer moments like Clarice and Soy Loco Por Tí, América have a dreamy, poetic quality. It’s clear there’s a lot of artistry here, but it mostly feels like mood music to me—pleasant, well-crafted, but not something I’d find myself returning to often. That’s probably doing the album an injustice, given its historical significance and the fact that it was seen as a major political statement in Brazil at the time. The fusion of Western pop and Brazilian traditional music was bold and subversive, and Veloso’s poetic, often cryptic lyrics added to the sense of rebellion. But from a purely listening standpoint, it’s an album I respect more than I love. It’s nice, it’s exotic, it’s well put together—but it doesn’t spark much excitement for me.
I didn't know what to expect from this, but it was really enjoyable. The band cooks! 3.5 stars, actually
Random thoughts: * This was a pleasant listen. * I'm sure this was genre bending and defining at the time but just kinda sounds old now. * I probably won't pick this one up again. * If you really want some great Brazilian music pick up the "City of God" soundtrack. That is where it's at.
Pretty good.
Subdued vocals against vibrant musical arrangements give sad-guy-at-a-party vibes.
Nice Brazilian pop / folk album. I actually found myself liking some of the tracks with smaller play counts, like "Anunciacao", which has some really interesting structures and great use of vibraphone as a the harmonic voice. Definitely enjoyed this one and I'm excited to check out other albums!
Not a huge fan of Brazilian music, but being resident in Portugal and being able to speak Portuguese I’m used to it. Although not really my style, it’s culturally significant for Brazil and deserves to be on this list. Enjoyable enough for more than a 3, but not quite a 4.
First album in the list to not be sung in English. Definitely an example of music I'd be highly unlikely to come across without this list and I look forward to hopefully a range of international artists throughout the 1001 albums. Enjoyed this one, though no one song stuck out in particular. Would happily listen to in a playlist without skipping, but would be unlikely to actively seek it out without it coming on. I do really enjoy music recorded in the era and this was a nice reminder of that. Perhaps I should have a look at translations of the lyrics to get a greater understanding of what each of the songs, and the album as a whole, were about.
Good vibes, scary cover
Vocals were nice enough. Not something I’d to listen to again.
Some fine tunes
I love hearing these old "world" albums that let the music speak more than the history. While this album does have a decent amount of info on Wiki, its pure and simple Tropicana.
Had never heard this before, very good.
I enjoyed it enough on the ride to work that I played it again on the way home.
Tropicália from the Bahia region of Brazil. This art movement is a fascinating note in Brazil's cultural history, as people felt compelled to meld different styles while confronting the authorities of the day. A number of artists, both Brazilian and around the world, have cited the Tropicália movement as an inspiration for their own music, bringing psychedelic and forward-thinking ideas to the forefront. Caetano Veloso is one of several key musicians from this movement, though only a few of the songs on here are as interesting as the movement makes them out to be. I like the idea of pushing the boundaries of art and music in unique ways, but rarely does this album have the bite that I was expecting. Feels fairly tame and reserved in its execution, though some of the sounds that are explored are cool. Perhaps a better album for representing Tropicália would be Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis, a collaborative album from various artists who specifically aimed to define the movement in a single album.
Kinda fun.
Really enjoyed this one!
puxa vida
Brazilian Psychedelic Rock and Samba, late 60s. Tropicália, mixing Brazilian with other music. Brazilian spy film music, cool, very different. Not 100% my thing, but groovy.
For not being able to understand much of anything, this was better than I was expecting it to be. Really enjoyed the opening track. Low 3.
Beginning felt like spanish Christmas music. End was better. Not a terrible listen while working. 3 stars
Didn't really pay too much attention to this album since it was in Portuguese I think and all of the songs sounded extremely similar. Didn't hate but probably a low 3
Didn't really understand anything he was saying but felt like it flowed pretty well and had some solid instrumentals.
Unique and groovy
Another weird one on the list, but i like it.
Nothing terrible on here but a few pretty good tracks
7/10 Folky Brazilian vibes. Downbeat but a little uplifting. Simple production, nice vocals. Good use of orchestration. I liked the last song where he sung like a baby being given a delicious purse “mmmmm nom nom nom mmmm” Best: Maria Bethânia
Not my cup of tea. Doesn’t deserve a 2, though, still good.
Hyggelig
På den ene side ikke rigtig min stil, på den anden side kan jeg godt høre at det er virkelig godt spillet. 10/10 creep vibes på det cover
Started listening on a plane, and eu nao gosto. Finished it on the beach, and eu muito gosto. Just goes to show that timing is everything.
An enjoyable listen, eclectic and exotic (sometimes not so exotic) mix of music. Lovely voice. This works very well as a background music to set an ambiance.
Perfectly nice
This is cool. Feels a little wordy. Sometimes the portugues sound just like mushmouthed spanish, sometimes I can't understand it at all. Anyway he takes the brazilian shit and mashes it with folk rock quite nicely.
I mean i dont speak the language. Felt a bit like bossa nova but it was okay
Ok, no saves.
One of the albums of all time
i'm sure it's good if you're more familiar with brazilian/tropicalia music but without a reference point, it's kinda just okay
It was nice to hear a non-english psych record.
Eh
Guy has a great voice. Cool blend of brazillian music and the 60's lounge/psych rock sound.
I liked this Latin psychedelic, I’d like it more if I understood the language
This one didn't really hit for me. Perfectly fine but not my cup of tea.
I was expecting a Brazilian Donovan just by looking at the album art. I can't say I'm disappointed. My track record with Brazilian music in general is not great because I'm not a fan of the Gilberto family or bossanova. While I prefer the likes of Tim Maia or Milton Nascimento, this is still great and has the benefit of being relatively short.
good study musics
I guess there's a lot of heavy political and paradigm-shifting shit going on in here. I respect that, but it's not fully resonating with me. I'll spend some more time on it.
Tropicalia jams.
Was really fun but I guess i dont like brazilian music as much as I want to
Nice album. I would like it more if I was on the beach with a drink in my hand.
It was a bit weird album.
Kind of what I needed on a chilly morning. It maintains the muddy late-60s mix despite the remaster, but I can still hear individual instruments and his voice sounds great. I wish I was listening to it on a cabin porch or something. Highlights: Clarice, Alegria Alegria, Onde Andaras, Superbacana
My husband hated this so much I had to close the door, but I quite enjoyed it after the initial cacophony in the first track. Three stars because I’d rate it in my mind before reading his bio on Wikipedia and discovering the underage wife thing…
It's fine, but it's the same as most of the albums in this style i've had on the list where it feels like every song just starts with an idea and then just rides it out for the entire length. Never feels like a song is progressing in any way. Whole thing just goes right through my ears and out the other side.
interesting mix of latin rhythms with pop and psychedelia. Caetano has a nice vocal style and the songs are pleasant enough if a little forgettable
Allt í lagi. Ekki minn tebolli samt. Orðið þreytt í lokin.

This was decent. This album seems a little more of an accessible Tropicalia album than the Os Mutantes record we had a few months back. It's still not a style I would seek out, but it was good enough that I enjoyed the entire album. 3/5
Enjoyed this ok, but it's one of those "good, but not my genre" type of albums. I don't see myself returning to it, but it's fun for what it is. 3/5
No. 264/1001 Tropicalia 3/5 Clarice 3/5 No Dia Que Un Vim 3/5 Algeria, Alegria 3/5 Onde Andaras 3/5 Anunciacao 2/5 Superbacana 3/5 Paisagem Util 3/5 Clara 3/5 Soy Loco Por Ti America 3/5 Ave-Maria 3/5 Eles 3/5 Average: 2,92 Interesting album in portugese. Not my favorite though.
I wanted to like it? But it didn’t land. Appreciated the creativity but I liked the stuff Spotify recommended afterwards much better. 2.5
OK.
This is quite a nice listen, there's a bit more to it musically than most of the stuff we've had in Portuguese (though it does lose something from me not being able to understand a word of it). Very smooth, 3/5.
In the right mood this would be perfect. Not sure how often that mood pops along.
Not quite my thing. A little bosa nova, electric organ, slow stuff. Not for me. But for someone.
I liked it well enough but this challenge has exposed me to some other South American artists like Jorge Ben that I like quite a bit more. A good listen, but not one that I think I’ll look to listen to endlessly.
Trooppista perinteistä Brasilialaista musiikkia. Parhaat: Soy Loco Por Ti America, Tropicalia
So I was driving yesterday, and listening to music. I was getting annoyed by the traffic and the weather. But a funny thing happened. I put THIS album, and I felt a LOT better. It was very therapeutic for me. The cha cha medley of "Billie Jean" and "Eleanor Rigby" was... interesting. I did enjoy this, but it seemed a little TOO quiet. It may be the production, but I shouldn't have to crank up the volume to WAY past 11. Top songs: "Get Out Of Town," "Terra"
The backstory behind this album is more interesting than the album itself, with Veloso and Gil Gilberto (another common name on this 1,001 list) seeing jail time because some of the songs ruffled Brazilian government feathers. Tropicalia had some noteworthy (and at times annoying) psychedelic experimentation and Alegria, Alegria also felt like a true representation of 60's rock with a Brazilian twist (like it should be in Austin Powers). Superbacana and Soy Loco Por Ti America had some nice uptempo beats that made me stop and pay attention. Otherwise, meh. Even Veloso would agree.
the songs did not need to be that long
Did not know whether this was a 1 or a 5 - utterly sublime and equally bonkers in all aspects- 6 minutes around the virtue of holding a stone is indulgent to say the least - must have been good drugs in the 60s
not bad for a foreign language album
Favorite Track: Tropicália
Can definitely tell it's Brazillian and also that it's from the 60s. It's a pretty fun album with some beach party songs like Alegria, Alegria, Superbacana, and Soy Loco Por Ti America. I definitely liked some of the other Brazillian music I've gotten here more, like Elis Regina.
The picture on the cover kind of gives me the creeps, but I’ll try to ignore that as I listen. It’s kind of cool. I might get into it more after another listen or two, but for now it’s just ok.
I thought it was fine--expected to like it more than I did though due to ages ago someone (I think my little brother) recommending him.
Südamerikanisch
Fun Spanish album.
3 good
Can’t say I was a fan of listening to him eat a chicken and gravy sandwich all the way through the final track but it was otherwise a very pleasant album. 3.5 stars.
Pretty awesome arrangements and very beautiful just not a good fit for me personally.
I am Brazilin and Caetano is a very influentil artist. It is nice to listen to some of his first works.
Great album cover. Unnecessarily serial-killer-esque vibes – I dig it. The music itself is peculiar yet reasonably catchy, utilising a variety of instruments and tempos to create lots of different textures and moods throughout the album. This might be my first experience with Brazilian music, and I thought it was fairly strong. The music has a fun, light, dancey feel, even in its slower ballads. Veloso's melodies are quirky and unpredictable (except for the songs which were released as singles). There are little elements sprinkled throughout that hook the ear, such as subtly-mixed organ licks, horns arrangements on scattered tracks, and the occasional vocal harmony. I do take issue with a few things, though. The melodies on non-single tracks, while interesting, are a little too jumbled for their own good. The music isn't particularly punchy, with the lack of percussion being particularly noticeable. This isn't head-nodding, foot-tapping music. So, even though Caetano Veloso ticks most of the boxes in terms of musicality, the approachability is lacking. And I don't quite see the connection to psychedelia that many sources insist upon. 3/5 Key tracks: Tropicália, Clarice, Superbacana, Soy Loco Por Ti América
It's alright, but I expected something more energetic. Especially the singing is kind of bland. Favorite song: Anunciação
Nifty
The flow of this is great, the music good and compelling, having a bit of trouble connecting with it personally however.
he giving me that real goon stare
Good music to vibe to. Filled the same use case as fela kuti for me. Nothing specific stood out but I listened in the background multiple times.
Cool
Weird, but interesting
So good. Never would have heard this otherwise I think.
I was surprised that I didn’t hate this! Despite not understanding a word, it wasn’t as painful as some of the more culturally diverse albums that have appeared from this list. It’s not quite a 3 but it’s not really a 2 either
This was surprisingly enjoyable. I'm a lyrics person, so generally not a huge fan of music in languages other than English, but this was a nice background soundtrack.
Felt like a Tropicalia vacation
I get this is the big one. This is every psychedelic album but in Portuguese
Okay. Good to have another non English album come up, pretty enough, but not overly captivating for me. Good relaxing background type music
Fun and easy to listen to. Not sure if it would be better or worse if I could understand the words.
This is fine and I'm sure very important in Latin America, but doesn't do anything special for me.
This was a fun jaunt but not something I would want regularly. It's still that derivative psychedelic thing.
Solid album. Not my usual genre, but albums like this are why I'm here. Never would've heard this otherwise. Good stuff.
This was pretty cool! I guess with most of this style of music, I can't really understand what's going on. However, I like the jazz and tango grooves. It was fun and interesting. A lot of songs about MARIA.
Chilled tropical music.
Brave guy. Not my kind of music, but I admire his courage.
This was a nice album. I really enjoyed the music itself. Veloso’s voice was kind of grating on the tracks with a lower register.
Closer to a 4 than to a 3 really. Sounds like a Brazilian Sgt peppers. Love it.
This was very easy to listen to. Listens: 1 Rating: 3
Bit bad
This is the type of stuff that makes me love this list.
Ja lyssna på dehä!
This album may well have been very influential, and it's definitely easy listening, however it unfortunately sounds a bit dated at this point.
Good
Nice. Also Ce.
Completely outside of my music tastes. Not something I'd probably ever seek out or listen to again, but they said I must hear it before I die, and so I did
This is one I was sure I was going to like going in as it checked a couple of boxes for me. Unfortunately, it's more than a bit underwhelming.
Another one where I wish I knew what he was saying, cause he sounded really passionate about it. I was most impressed by how different every song on this album was.
some cool stuff in there but mostly just fine
O cara é bom pena q é um estuprador
Lovely
No soy un gran experto en este género pero me parece que me han gustado más otras álbumes de caetano que este.
an unexpected album! this self-titled album by caetano veloso was so chill and enjoyable. i wasn't surprised when the album looped without me realizing. titles like "soy loco por i americana" were amusing, but then the songs were quality! this album belonged squarely in the sixties! typically music coming from non-north american countries in the second half of the 20th century were "late" as far as decades go, but oh no, not this album. this album makes so much sense being released in 1968. the south asian influence on "eles" was an unusual combination and really cool, but also contributed to the sixties feel since it was so popular at this time.
I'm not sure I've ever heard quite as strong of a mix of samba and psychedelia as what is present on this album. This particular sound combination made this album run very close to being "exotica", which I have yet to hear much of on this project, so props for that! Largely, this album wasn't really my thing, but I did baseline enjoy the listen!
Favourite song - Once Andaras
Spanish cafe music to my uncultured ears
"Caetano Veloso" is a landmark album that showcases the immense talent and creativity of the Brazilian musician. Released in 1968, this self-titled album features a blend of bossa nova, tropicália, and psychedelic rock, creating a unique and innovative sound that is both captivating and thought-provoking. Veloso's poetic lyrics and soulful vocals are at the forefront of the album, backed by intricate arrangements and lush instrumentation. Tracks like "Tropicália" and "Alegria, Alegria" are standout examples of Veloso's ability to blend traditional Brazilian music with contemporary influences. While the album may be challenging for listeners unfamiliar with Brazilian music, it is a rewarding and immersive experience for those willing to explore its rich textures and complex themes. "Caetano Veloso" is a timeless classic that continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.
I’m not sure if I listened to the right album, but reading the comments I think I listened to one which covered enough bases. I enjoyed the bosssnova and the rhythm of the words but wouldn’t actively listen again.
okay, probably won't come back to. Diverse sounds.
I have a soft spot for Brazilian music but much more on the bossa nova side, less on the tropical pop side. Caetano Veloso was still a good jam though.
Very uplifting and upbeat! Good music to perk up to
Lovely to listen to on a Friday afternoon, nice and boppy
No es de mi estilo. Pero bueno .... 3
One of the better non English speaking albums. Great flow and all around sound. Enjoyed it thoroughly!
The vibes on this remind me a lot of Love's album Da Capo. It has this somewhat interesting psych rock thing going with a bit of a bouncy feel and lots of different instruments and things. It's a bit all over the board, but I don't hate it. This is the self-titled debut from a Brazilian artist. The genre is apparently considered to be "tropicália", which I guess is a Brazilian artistic movement that combined some traditional Brazilian sounds with the the psych rock from the US and UK at the time, plus some African influences too. It seems like it has a bit of an artsy avante-garde reputation compared to traditional Brazilian music. There also seems to be a lot of political stuff going on around this musical movement which I am not even going to attempt to understand. The album is in Portuguese so I have no idea what he's saying, but the vibes are actually reasonably good here. It's a bit hit-or-miss, but a good number of the songs are pretty interesting musically, I like the Brazilian twist on the type of rock that was coming out in the US and UK at the time. The singer has a nice voice too. The first two songs are like normal song length, and then the whole middle is like ~2 minute songs, so it ends up going pretty fast (35 minutes total). I can't say I'm likely to come back to this often, but it was pretty enjoyable. I'm glad I listened to it and expanded my horizons a bit. Favorite song: Tropicália Other: Clarice, Alegria Alegria, Anunciação, Soy Loco Por Ti América 3/23/24
I sort of assume that, as an historical artefact, Caetano Veloso represents the Brazilian Tropicalia genre and warrants a place on the list. The fusion of traditional, psychedelia, bossa nova and Indian rhythms is oh-so-sixties - but that is the issue, really, as it sounds a little old fashioned to modern ears, despite a creditable effort and energy.
3.5/5
I could’ve listened closer. But it’s hard because of the language barrier. Cool 60’s psychedelic album, the second one from Brazil that I’ve had so far. Nice mix of genres - some rock, some jazz. Cool stuff but I don’t know if I’m drawn to it again. 3 stars. Standout track: Tropicália
I'm not too fond of this typical way of singing but the music is overall quite entertaining.
Different - I enjoyed it
Oh my god. Is this guy gunna crawl out of this album cover and murder me??? Who told him to pose that way for his album cover photo? What an interesting marketing strategy… I am happy to report that his music is way more upbeat and fun than his appearance. With a concise 34 minute runtime, this album gave me just the right amount of Brazilian charm this morning.
Very interesting to read that this album was disruptive enough to lead to the arrest and "forced exile" for the artists 1 year later. Apparently an early album in the Tropicalia genre? I've never heard of that before. The music was fine, pretty upbeat and pleasant. Glad this album was on the list.
Is it a good album? No. But is it a bad album? No. It's an album and I have just listened to it. 3 stars.
nice vibe but not my cup of tea
I don’t think I was in the right mood for this today, but it was okay. I liked it more as it went along. I’m always happy to hear something non-English since it’s unlikely I’d ever find this on my own.
There was a definite mix of Spanish instrumentation without feeling too dated or foreign. Overall pleasant experience that feels like it could have come out of an indie movie soundtrack or something you'd here at a local grocery store. Since the lyrics are in a foreign language, that lost my intrigue and gave the feeling of songs blending together even though there were some cool tempo changes.
Another pleasure from this project. Listening to albums I would have no earthly reason to otherwise find. It's interesting for obvious reasons, and a perfectly good listen. Not ultimately my thing, but we all knew that before I played it.
Decent, but would rather listen to Getz and Gilberto.
Superbacana = Belle and Sebastian, but in Portuguese
Uhh sure, it was nice. A good tropical bossa nova Portuguese album. Easy on the ears, but hard to connect to, since I have no idea what he was talking about.
Pas mal pour de la bossa nova, 3.5
Would never have listened to this on my own so I'm always glad to hear something like this. It wasn't my favorite but I thought it was pretty good
Chill! Salsa
Okay
Lovely chilled out songs. Just not sure what setting I personally would enjoy listening to the whole album.
It was okay. Not really my style.
Always good to get some non-English albums in the mix.
I've found myself generally liking what I've heard from Brazil and its weird ventures into the psychedelic, but I feel as though this album doesn't really perfectly strike those points that I enjoyed in works like Os Mutantes. Its still good, but could stand to commit to a song more often, as there are many times in a track where it'll stsrt to get good just to end a few moments later, and believe you me, I love a short song, but an unfinished song is not how you do it. There's a lot here to like, with fun tracks that make you feel like bouncing up and down, but one has to wish for a little bit more substance in its tracks, because if I want to party, this would probably not be my first choice for dancey, flavorful tracks, but again, a solid enough venture.
Latin style is always an adventure for me. I know enough Spanish to know that there were a lot of songs and his heart. Interesting vocal melodies. Fun listen as they mix in a bunch of instruments but not really my cup of tea.
Cool
ok
Wenn ich mir das Erscheinungsdatum anschaue: Sensationell! Leider trifft die Musik nicht meinen Geschmack - schade für mich 😃
This one is alright, but I feel like I would have felt more if I understood Portuguese. Otherwise, some nice chill out music.
I lost my reivew for this one, but I thought it was okay. I was excited to get an avant garde album from Brazil, but since I'm less familiar Brazilian music in general, it's harder for me to pick out the significance of it 3/5
Not for me but good album!
Os Mutantes was my first exposure to the genre of Tropicália. I had never heard of it before, and I’m still not 100% sure what it is, but I like the mix of Brazilian pop and psychedelic music. And this album seems to be the most enjoyable attempt at that mix that I’ve heard so far. But this album also blends some bossanova into it. And I’m really sad I haven’t gotten a proper bossanova album yet. Because I love it so much. Just that simple inclusion adds a whole other layer of serenity. Some of these songs are very calming, but still color and kind of weird. I think the cover best represents this. The beautiful, bright, and abstract artwork is the color, and then Caetano’s portrait with damn near the most menacing gaze I’ve ever seen is the weird. Os Mutantes is even featured on the last song, which is by far the most experimental and unique, but it sounds really cool. Rating: 6/10
It was ok, less 60's psychedelica then I hoped but you cant win them all.
I had this on the car but it was background and I didn't notice anything that especially stood out. Could be how easy listening some of it gets but I didn't get a ton out of this one. May need a relisten.
Well produced. Almost an ASMR vibe. Nothing popped for myself.
I find it very hard to evaluate a foreign language album. A lot of what impacts me personally is derived from the lyrics of a song. It’s also important in contextualizing the music. This album is definitely musically very eclectic and innovative. The song structures and varied instrumentation are certainly reminiscent of Sgt. Peppers and other contemporary psychedelic albums. But I couldn’t tell you for certain if this was classic or even great because I never really connected with it.
enjoyed the album on a nice walk. Reminded me of Narcos theme song
Some fun moments, but overall like a less interesting Devendra Banhart. 3/3.5
soothing but w a little pazaz u know 3
I'll never listen to this again and I was really close to skipping through but I kept listening and found myself tapping my toes and bobbing my head. It's catchy. It's like a 2.5 for me but I'll round up.
A low end 3, but the chances of me returning to this are pretty slim.
Yes, Brazil
3.5
