Reviews (page 5 of 7)
I'm just going to echo what most are saying about this one. Maybe it was an important record when it came out 40 years ago, but it doesn't hold up anymore. I genuinely fine this album to be pretty awful
A boring mid-school hip hop. Starting with the positives, I think what stands the most is the rapping, specially the flows. While I don't find them incredible or outstanding, I do believe they are the best part of the album by a long shot, as they sound like they are having fun and trying to hype things up. What I don't like about this album are the beats and how long the songs are. Coming from mid-school, the beats here are incredibly basic and dry, almost being only drums if it wasn't for the occasional synths textures they throw from time to time and that basically don't add anything of value, except for maybe some songs, like in "Looking for the Perfect Beat" and the intro of "Go Go Pop". However, even in those songs, the instrumentation isn't that remarkable or interesting. So, the mix of boring beats with lengthy songs (two of them last for more than seven minutes and another three of them last about six), this project makes for an unsatisfying experience that not even the rappers can save.
Interesting with some funky moments but a bit raw
funky funky funky
it was fun but repetitive
More influential than quality
Boring
This album is like a transitional form, a land animal with gills or something. I see how this was preceded by great works like Space is the Place and much 70s funk and lead to great works of hip hop but it feels and reads stilted and unfinished to me! Felt like I was just waiting for this one to end. Maybe better for a party vibe.
Running laps in physical education to this
no
I like Rage Against the Machine better than I did before after listening to this album because now I have someone else to blame Renegades of Funk on. If I were a better person I would probably be able to appreciate this album for it's place in the evolution of hip-hop music. In this world, though, I just found it a bit cheesy and very longwinded.
Not my thing
Influential, but sup-par compared to other 80's hip-hop acts.
ikke helt min type musikk det her
Corny dated rap. Some of the instrumentals were nice, but it was mostly standard beats.
I was actually enjoying this in a fun, retro/nostalgia way before I read up on all Bambaataa's reoccuring tendency to sexually assault young boys. So, knocking this a star for "garbage human" tax.
It's fine for what it is - an intro to the origins of hip hop, but I just can't believe this is the best example of this timeframe. I enjoyed the Queen Latifah album much more and feel like something from Grandmaster Flash may work better here. Plus just found out the Bambaataa was a notorious kiddie diddler, so let's move on from his historical significance and highlight other people from that era of hip hop.
Cool to hear where certain samples came from but not an album I wanted to listen to the whole thing
This was a little bit of a meh album. The songs were okay for just playing in the background, but it wasn't anything exciting. As this came out in 1986, I assume there was a market for it back then, but it's just very meh nowadays.
pivotal game changer - he was necessary as a catalyst, but that's it - after track 2 this record is just mediocre
Sounds super dated and doesn’t age well. I get that this was a door opener and super influential to future rap artists but as a standalone time capsule, it’s a little silly.
Live by the sword die by the sword. One generation's cutting edge is the next generation's pet rock. Similar to some 90s dance, this just doesn't age well. I know it's the dawn of the 808 and they walked so others could run - but I'm looking for morning running - even a jog. These songs drag on endlessly. And I get it - they're for the dancefloor. Or hanging. Or perambulating down the street - who doesn't want a good back beat. But I need a little bit more song. And not just more Kraftwerk songs. Actual songs. My take aways: In pop culture - it's better to be second. Transitional moments age better than being firmly at the beginning or end of an era. Technology is a b*tch.
Not quite my thing
No standouts
not my favorite
Ok old school hip hop/rap felt a bit dated
like many other reviewers noted, this must have been a defining and revolutionary record in it's time, but the genre has progressed so far since it's release, it's difficult to rate today.
The title track is great but the rest of the album is not as strong
It was interesting to here renegades of funk (which I didn't realise was the original) and the title track, but the rest fell away.
Just hasn’t aged that well. A slightly mean 2
The bass eats, the rest feels repetitious. Favourite track: Who You Funkin' With?
I really wanted to enjoy this more, but the other reviews pretty much sum it up. It's amazing for its time, but doesn't really age well. Still, it's enjoyable to hear some of the OG work that's so often referenced and covered nowadays.
don’t really like this old hip hop style, feels like raising hell but less good
I know it's gonna be early early hip hop which is just electronic music in my ear, essentially. The music does have energy and the funk despite being kinda sparse. I know for a fact there's no reason for these songs to be 7 minutes long unless you're on a dance floor. I get that without this I don't eventually get my favorites of BDP, all of Native Tongues etc, and it isn't a bad listen at all. In fact, of the albums on this list that are here for being influential/historically relevant/groundbreaking and not necessarily phenomenal by a modern sensibility, it's one of the better ones on my run so far. I wanna give it a 3 but boy I'm trying to distance what I learned on the wiki from the art itself and I am struggling. Melle Mel couldn't even say whether or not he knew? Damn. They got your mans.
Influential and would be fun as party music but not really good as an album just to listen to.
feels historically important but this one was a real slog to get through. I was bored halfway through the first song. At least it was short
I’m sure this was important then but doesn’t do it for me now
Old school hip hop that, unfortunately, just isn't my thing. Cool to see one of the albums where the genre started, and cool to hear the original Renegades of Funk (Rage Against the Machine did an amazing cover of it), but yeah. Way too dated for my tastes.
I did not enjoy this one very much. I understand how revolutionary and "genre-defining" it was. There are definitely some really cool artistic choices and styles that influenced hip-hop. However, I wouldn't listen to it again.
This is the kind of early hip hop where I can appreciate it because of where it leads, but I don't really like it much. Beats are okay to good, but repeating the same lyrics over and over becomes tedious to listen to.
"The song "Planet Rock" was one of the earliest hits of the hip hop music genre and remains one of its pioneering recordings. " - meget funky og hygge, men også ret ensformigt
Would have be one star but it's definitely creative.
Most likely an influential group in its day. It’s fun and happy, but unfortunately not very good in light of today’s hiphop. RATM do a considerably better version of Renegades of Funk and the album is rather drawn out
certains sons sont cool mais pas mon style pas fou
Sure it’s very important and groundbreaking for its time, but so are the Beatles, whose music I do enjoy today. Hasn’t aged very well 2/5
Very interesting not horrible but wouldn't ljsten
im not the fan of the like robotic alien space hippity hop
I adore early breakbeat, but this was just far too dull. Someone rapping over an electro beat that never really goes anywhere. Looks like this album was some sort of compilation from back before hip hop "got good". It reminds me of just how bad hip-hop was before it underwent a transformation and came back strong in the "golden age". Two stars.
+1 for importance to music in general, but man this aged like milk in the desert sun
1001 Albums Vol. 0026: Planet Rock: The Album ============================================================ Introduction: Twenty-five albums completed. I haven't even made a dent on this project as of yet, but I'm still proud of myself nonetheless. I've decided that I will be making one change with the achievement of listening to twenty-five albums. I'm no longer going to be putting the word "Score" after each song. I think that one using this site should be smart and knowledgeable enough in music to know what I mean when I put "3/10" or "10/10" next to a song. It's a simple change, but still convenient nonetheless. Anyway, that aside, what grand album awaits me for hitting the milestone of twenty-five? Well...um...I actually have no idea. What the hell does Planet Rock even mean? Is this going to be some Gustav Holst inspired project? Is this going to be some huge concept album that tries to portray each of the planets but in the form of rock music? Well...this is actually a hip-hop album. What the hell? Oh...I get it...the artist, Afrika Bambaataa released an extremely popular and well-regarded song by the name of Planet Rock and decided to feature the name of that song in an album. Of course...that isn't misleading in the slightest. I mean, for a second I thought I was about to listen to a whole goddamn movie soundtrack or something. Anyway, that said, this album, released by Afrika Bambaataa in 1986, is apparently considered to be an extremely influential hip-hop album. Why? I don't know yet. Seriously, who the actual hell is this guy? You cannot tell me you've heard of this man's name before this point....Anyway, um...apparently this is actually a compilation album as well? Now, now, now, hold on. I think that we can all agree on the fact that a compilation album making this list is kinda crazy, right? I mean, I've seen people who have had problems with live albums being included on the list. I myself really don't have any problem with live albums. They can be extremely influential and have great material in their own rights. But a compilation album? I mean, that's like if The Beatles were to put every single song that people consider to be their best into one compilation album and the list were to include only that. No Abbey Road, no White Album, no Revolver. Point is, a compilation album is kinda ridiculous...actually it's really ridiculous....Alright, anyway, I'm getting very off topic. I'll just put my negative feelings aside towards this album for now. Now, I will say, I have actually never heard any hip-hop related material from the 80's. The earliest hip-hop material that I've heard were all released around the early to mid-90's, so hearing material released nearly a decade earlier should be pretty interesting...actually really interesting. I'm curious if there's going to be any form of 80's-like pop present on this album. Will there be anything that gives off the vibe of Rock, Disco? Let's just get into it and see, I guess. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Track 1: Planet Rock: 9/10 Track 2: Looking For The Perfect Beat: 7/10 Track 3: Renegades Of Funk: 7/10 Track 4: Frantic Situation Score: 5/10 Track 5: Who You Funkin' With?: 6/10 Track 6: Go Go Pop: 4/10 Track 7: They Made A Mistake: 4/10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Conclusion: Well...this was quite the album....Sorry, compilation album. Yeah, this was quite the compilation album. The first song was pretty great and the two that followed weren't all that bad. but the second half of the album was just a complete atrocity. This was seriously a compilation album too? Are those not supposed to like...feature some of the best material that a band has put out? Well, there are plenty of compilation albums that don't do that, but you can clearly tell that this one was trying to. I mean, the literal title of the album is the group's best and most famous song. How the hell can a band genuinely be this bad? Okay, anyway, what about the actual album itself? Well, like I said in the intro, this is a hip-hop album. It's an 80s hip-hop album too which seemed pretty interesting since I had literally never heard hip-hop from the 80s before. That being said, there's a pretty good reason as to why. At least, if this album were to speak for all of 80s hip-hop, then there's a pretty good reason as to why I've never heard it before. That reason being...this is literally the most dated thing I have ever heard in my entire life. Everything here: the instrumentation, the lyrics, the vocals, all sound so incredibly dated to the point that it actually kinda blew me away while listening. Just everything about this album and its sound screams 80s. Hell, even the album cover screams something you would see in the 80s. This entire album is so dated to the point where it's almost comical. Seriously, I'd recommend giving this thing a listen just to hear how unbelievably dated this album is. Now, with that major critique out of the way, what about the album's music? It's dated....Okay seriously though...there's a lot of usage of typical hip-hop sounds, synths, alternating vocals...synths, drum machines...synths, and so on. This fact stays pretty consistent across the entire album. The instrumentation really doesn't change up all that much, just the various melodies that each song provides. There are some undoubtedly good uses of this instrumentation across the album, such as the sonic wall that is Looking For The Perfect Beat, but there's a lot of bad, bland, and boring usage of it too. Again, a lot of that may have to do with the datedness of the album, but I digress. Overall, the best way to describe the music of this album is as if 80s synths, drum-machines, and hip-hop collided into one to create this mess that just doesn't feel right. I will say, the music did have a very futuristic vibe to it at certain points. You know, you're walking in a city at night with flying cars over your head and streets lit by neon signs, that sorta vibe. That vibe that it gave off was unique and cool, but that vibe is also undoubtedly something that screams 80s as well. It's honestly kinda crazy to think how far hip-hop has come since this album's release...Anyway, there is some kinda cool blending between genres like funk and techno as well, yet hip-hop is obviously the most prominent genre of music you'll find on this album. Um...I guess the instrumentation itself is pretty well-produced and well-performed by the band....I have to give compliments to this album where I can....Well, I guess the only other thing to really mention regarding this album's music is that it's...pretty poorly written at times. There are some songs where the music is well written, such as Planet Rock and the progressive vibe it gives off, but majority of the time the music simply feels directionless and becomes boring by the end of a song. This overall feel may be due to a lack of additional instrumentation, random vocals that alternate between left and right channels, or even simply switching up the melody mid-song as is seen on the closing track. Yeah, this album is not looking good, is it? Now, with the dated as hell music aside, what about the lyrics and general themes that the album presents? Hip-hop is known for pretty poetic lyrics comparable to that of folk. Surely this album must have some great messages, right? Well...it's pretty mixed. The album has this overall theme of serving almost as a "party album". A lot of songs on here attempt to either be or simulate the type of music one would hear at a late-night party or something of the like. This, of course, leads to lyrics that feel...pretty odd to listen to in a critical sense. Like, some of these songs would serve as great things to play at a party, especially the title track, but it doesn't feel as if the lyrics were written with any intention other than that. Now, on top of that, there are some songs on this album as well that just feel...either stupid or self-indulgent when regarding their lyrics. Looking For The Perfect Beat literally talks about what it describes...except it claims that the song itself is the perfect beat. I mean, there is literally a line in that song that goes like this: "Afrika Bambaataa, I possess the perfect beat." ...Come on....The song isn't even that good too...besides the point. There are also a lot of self-inserts into each song as well which just feels a bit weird to hear across the entire album. Anyway, overall, the lyrics of this album are absolutely not its strongest point. What is this album's strongest point? Well, the vocals are actually pretty damn good. The rapping is simply just so tight, the way it works around with the beat of the songs works as well, and the singer's voice is simply pretty good as well. I mean, the rapping is just...pretty good. There's not that much more to say about it other than what I just did. Now, can the same thing be said about the entire album? Well, no, absolutely not. The production and writing is dated as hell, the lyrics are alright at best, and I personally don't ever want to listen to most of this album ever again. That being said...I can...unfortunately understand why this album is considered to be extremely influential both in the hip-hop and electro music scenes. There was undoubtedly a lot of creativity, such as the blending of various genres, that went behind this album at the time even if they can't entirely be heard nowadays. That being said, this status of being influential doesn't save this album from being bad. That factor does save this album from being my lowest rated yet, but that factor also doesn't save it from being tied with my lowest yet. ============================================================ Planet Rock: The Album: 5/10 Song Average: 6/10
not for me... muy de fondo va ok.
Perhaps this album was a true pioneer in the hip hop genre, but I found it to be a bit of a mixed bag musically. Being a clear product of the 80s, there are some fun mixes of beats with synths, and I can imagine some of the songs being a good fit for parties (e.g. Who You Funkin' With). But too many of the songs aren't all that well constructed, particularly on the first side of the album. The lyrics are pretty inane, the songs go on far too long without much good reason, and there are some pretty bad production lapses where one or two of the rappers sound like they are several feet away from the mic. Altogether, this feels like a snapshot of a genre in its incubation phase. It's cool to look back on, kind of like the early mass-market cameras, but has clearly been surpassed and doesn't make for the best listening experience now.
This is really dated. It's also average at best and a little annoying. The title track wasn't bad, but the rest gets old fast.
may well have been genre 'influencing' and 'ground breaking' back in the day.....meh
Unfortunately, wasn't ready to funk it.
I can see why this is on here. I can hear the influences on later recordings, but not having heard it at the time it was made leaves it sounding extremely dated to my ears.

Not my vibe.
- De liedjes duren veel te lang. - Ik vind het leuk hoe je de liedjes kunt horen die dit album hebben gesampled. - I understand the significance of the album and the impact that it had, but its not my style.
Well, one killer track that undoubtedly was a template for dance music of a generation, but the rest kind of pales in comparison.
I understand the historical importance of this album for the hip-hop movement, but it's just a bunch of people rapping over samples taken from Kraftwerk. Just listen to the seminal electronic albums made by that german group, instead.
niente di speciale ma non l’ho ascoltato benissimo, però interessante per la denuncia sociale
Ah man, I reeeeally hoped that this album would live up to the sensational album cover. There were moments in the first track, particularly with those cool synths where I thought it matched well - but then it just goes on waaay too long. Then the following tracks tend to go on way too long as well. It becomes so repetitive within each individual track, and you end up feeling bored - which really does feel like a betrayal on what's seemingly promised with the album cover. Like others, I had no idea Renegades of Funk was a cover by RATM. It goes to show what a cover can be when you do something completely different, but have it still in keeping with the spirit of it. 2/5. It really has aged poorly.
This is another album that I found really dated, and didn’t enjoy that much. A lot of the background sounded like a video game or soundtrack, which was kind of interesting- but not my favourite. The rapping- similar to DMC- felt so slow to me!
I suppose this album is historically significant and may have influenced later artists but it’s not that great. Interesting that Kraftwerk collaborated on some of the tracks.
Time did not treat this one kindly. Sooo 80's, cheesy rapping, awful drum machine. I get these guys were pioneers but its very repetitive and boring.
I appreciate that this album is what essentially began Hip-Hop albums, but it's basically the same bass beat on every track, and it became stale quickly. Favorite Track: "Looking For The Perfect Beat".
1.8
Decent grooves, but the same thing for too long.
Why are these songs so long? They don't really say much but the same thing over & over. Do I need a 7 minute song about finding a perfect beat? Not really. Incredibly dated beats & flow. Renegades of Funk is the best song. Rage just did it better & rightfully trimmed it down. Frantic Situation is alright & Who You Funkin' With? Is fun. I like the Funk puns. This seems to have all the clichés of early hip-hop & rap. Having to introduce almost every rapper who shows up. Silly simplistic flow. It's kinda funny seeing the awkward years of this genre. All the genres have their awkward years. I'm giving this a 2 but I can't wait for it to end. It's painful how long some of these songs are.
Fun, old school hip hop but just not my thing
a fine formula that overstays its welcome
< the Beatles I wanted to like this so much but it is the most cliche kind of hip hop that people make fun of. I was waiting for someone to say "my name is mc chill and I'm here to say" that said, it was cool to hear the original Renegades for the first time.
In contrast to some older albums on this list, Planet Rock sounds pretty dated to me. Nothing really stands out.
30/01/2026 I can't say I enjoyed this very much. Spotify listeners: Afrika Bambaataa: 571.5k The Soulsonic Force: 428.9k
Not really my dope but one or two songs are nice Song I like: Go go Pop
I assume that for the time period when this was made, this would be really impressive. And it is very catchy. There are some production things I don't love, but I think that's just a limitation of the technology at the time. I get what they were trying to go for. It would get a 3, however reading the other reviews talk about how he's a massive pedophile makes it lose a point.
I can appreciate what's happening here, but this was not my definition of a good time.
This didn't really do enough for me, the beats weren't funky enough
Die Bewertung fiel mir schwer. Stellenweise hatte es echt Spaß gemacht, dann wiederum war es auch oft nervig.
nah
picks: planet rock, looking for the perfect beat
I see how it was very early to the hip-hop wave, but it's just not very good. Not a semblance of structure besides the annoyingly bland drum machine.
Owes as much to Arthur Baker as it does to Afrika. Hip hop from the dawn of time
It was technically alright, but not to my tastes.
Not at all my thing. Really boring. 2 stars.
Not an unenjoyable listen but seemed to be pretty basic. I can't speak towards the impact that this album had on rap as I wasn't alive when it came out.
Man, the album cover made promises it couldn't keep but it was totally fine. I really wanted to like this more but sounds like they forgot what bass was lol.
I spent most of this one checking to see how long was left to go which probably isn’t a good sign.
Historically significant, but not good.
I like a bit of this, but then they beat the hell out of it. I understand it's because this is primarily dance music. But I'm n not listening to it on the dance floor. I'm at a desk or in a car or something, and this gets old fast. I really like some of this early hip-hop that was still positive and fun. I like Newcleus much more than this, still dance-y and fun, but a bit more listenable for longer times. same time/era. I gotta give this a 2. It's not terrible, but each track overstays its welcome and 40 minutes is too long to listen to this sober.
Kinda fun
🌟🌟 everything sounds the same, listening high must be a flash jdjsjsj
nogal eentonig
I mean... this is the sort of music you make with two buddies in your room when you get high. It's stupid fun, but I don't see why it's on this list. Heard worse.
Does everything, and none of them well. A slop of sounds.
Influential? Sure. Good? No. Best Song: Planet Rock Rating: 3/10 Stars: 2
Ok. Very 80’s hip hop. The songs were too long and too repetitive though. I had heard Planet Rock before.
I had It Takes A Nation Of Millions … yesterday, and this really does not compare at all well. Also, I was very confused why they were so obsessed with gloves until I checked out the band members. Quite shit, really.
Dårligt, men ikke kedelige space hip hop. Sejt cover, men indpakningen snyder.
More rap boys I've never heard of. Based on the era and album art, I can imagine what it sounds like. And that's exactly what it sounds like. It sounds rather silly, but I can see why people would have e enjoyed it in the 80s. It's supposed to have been influential, so I'll take your word for it. Still, it's a lot less remarkable than the rap music which I'm more familiar with from just a few years later. This makes me think of Police Academy 4, but without the funny bits.
Decent beats but the songs are too damn long
These are some of the coolest hip hop beats I've ever heard. The problem is, as it is with a whole sub genre of hip hop albums on this list, is that the rapping is absolute trash. I know that it's from a different era and you can't compare this to something like Kendrick, but even for early stage rap this is garbage. I would love to hear this sampled by someone more modern who can actually flow. Really wanted to like this more, but I honestly found it annoying.
1.9 I'm sorry, but this is terrible. It's aged so poorly, what might have once sounded quite futuristic hasn't quite cut through to today. Planet Rock just doesn't impress hearing it for the first time in 2025, unlike the Kraftwerk-esque backing.
Definitely old school. Definitely dated. He’s also a bad dude by all reports. Renegades of Funk was fine but Rage Against the Machine’s version is better.
It was OK
Couldn't get into this one. The rhythms weren't interesting enough, and each song overstayed its welcome.
- Ugh, sex trafficking & child molestation. So many creeps on this list. - I like breakbeats, and this has been sampled a ton. On the other hand, it’s really dated, and the songs go on too long and aren’t super memorable.
Surprisingly light with an up beat, nevertheless it did not ring my bell.
Generally, I am not Hip Hop's biggest fan, even though I find old school Hip Hop generally much more agreeable. Still, this album leaves me shrugging. 2/5
+1 star for the Kraftwerk samples. Other than that, could’ve done without this album.
It was okay, familiar with the first song of course
#758. This doesn't really hold up very well. Was it popular or influential at the time? No idea, but it's not for me right now. 2/5: meh
This was such an old school hip hop record- basic drum machine, synth, record scratches- that I kept expecting someone to come in saying "my name is Raymond and I'm here to say...." It was probably important at the time of its release, but I'm 2025 it's just kind of boring.
I get why this would be important. I recognize beats and lyrics that were allusions for dozens of songs I know better. However, it just sounds brutally dated, more of a dance/disco album sonically for me, which isn't really my jam.
Planet Rock combines electronica, funk and hip-hop. I hated the album on my first listen and enjoyed it more on subsequent listens when I tried to ignore the hip-hop part. The parts of the record when the instrumentation leans into its funk-electronica fusion were pretty fun. Hip-hop is a genre I’m still learning to appreciate and at this stage in my journey I think I’m better off focusing on great, as opposed to significant, hip-hop. I just don’t have enough context to appreciate the latter. Putting aside historical significance, I think most would agree that by modern standards the rapping here feels dated and interesting. I’ve been on a deep dive of jazz-rock fusion recently and it got me thinking that there are so many records that would be much better without vocals. This record is a case in point. I can definitely see why the album was included in this project. It belongs here, but I don’t think there is anything here that I’ll be revisiting after completing this assignment. Normally, I’d give this a 3*, but I have to give Afrika a demerit for his SA of children. I reserve 1* for albums that are not listenable, and this is not that.
I've never listened to this album (50). Soooo repetitive. Did not age very well.
The 808 drum machine has become so pervasive a more recently in a highly processed/edited manner, that it feels jarring to hear it so unironically embraced in its naked un-edited original form. Not terrible, but it doesn’t feel as original and groundbreaking as it might have 40 years ago
There are better hip hop albums. This was fine.
Not horrible but I don’t really care for this style
I can appreciate that this was probably ahead of its time but it wasn’t really for me. To each their own!
I found this boring. The 80s electronic sounds and flow start to sound same-y after awhile, but I know this kinda thing was groundbreaking at the time. 2.5
if this album was big or influential in the day (i have no recollection of it) it certainly did not date well. It just sounds like a bad copycat of a collection of electronic, rap and hip-hop artists. Who you funkin with was ok and pushed it up half a star. 2.5 stars
Hideously dated and I’ve read that the guy is a nonce, so I’m not feeling generous.
That was kinda weird. Too much rap for my tastes. Go Go Pop was the best song.
This sounds incredibly dated. In no way is the sample (actually interpolation) of Kraftwerk better than just listening to Kraftwerk in the first place. This is a low 2; pretty close to a 1, TBH.
I got into rap around the 7th grade when I discovered Run DMC’s Raising Hell. It was the Walk This Way video. It made me a fan of both Run DMC and Aerosmith and rap music. I’d not heard of Afrika Bambaataa at the time, and not sure I’d ever heard any of his music until yesterday. That is, none of his music performed by Afrika Bambaataa, I had heard Rage Against the Machine perform his song Renegades of Funk, which is badass. I turned on Afrika Bambaataa and while it did bring back memories of that time discovering rap music, it didin’t do much else. Plus, I learned about some troubling issues with Bambaataa and it made me want to enjoy it even less. I instead wanted to listen to 2 Live Crew and early NWA with Arabian Prince on their first album. While they have their own controversies, it's what I grew up with. I’d imagine any young person listening to hip hop today wouldn’t even give Afrika Bambaataa or any rap from the mid-80s a second listen. Even to my old ears, it sounds kind of lame. Is this an album you need to hear before you die? If you’re a hip hop or rap historian, yes; otherwise, I’d just as soon have been issued 2 Live Crew’s Move Somethin’ or N.W.A. and the Posse’s album.
I found this to be pretty mediocre and boring. low 2/5.
Blind album and artist. Finally heard thr OG version if Renegades of Funk. Rage did it way better.
Beats are pretty funky but I didn’t care for much else with this one. I’m guessing it was fairly groundbreaking when it came out but now it just sounds like pretty basic 80s rap. Don’t get me wrong, I prefer this type of rap to what rap music is now but this album just isn’t that interesting to me
"We are from the future. We are here to make you break dance." That's what this feels like. Maybe could see some influence on the Beastie Boys. But, pretty much not good.
Really old school hip hop. Afrika Bambaataa was one of the first to do it on record. This early style of hip hop was meant to be heard live, and record label A&Rs did well to put this down on wax. Not my thing but I have respect for the path they paved.
No private session used for Spotify. If I was asked to come up with an album that defined the urban 80's this album would be on the top of the list. I knew nothing about this album before listening to it, but my mind went to 1985 and I was close. It was refreshing to hear a hip hop album that is just fun, not angry and not hitting the n word constantly. All that being said, I won't be listening it to again, but I didn't hate it.
Beep boop
Not a fan. This is the 80s rap I didn't like. I liked Run, Young MC, Beasties, LL. But this just didn't float my boat.
Historically significant album that has aged poorly.
Couldn't click with this, but I appreciate that it inspired so much later on.
Some people really enjoy this kind of old school hip-hop/rap. And they tell me what I'm missing because I'm not giving it a chance. This project definitely made sure I got plenty of chance to give this genre a chance. And confidently say "sorry, not for me".
Even though I grew up in this era and as a vinyl club dj back then I appreciate them as pioneers of making hip hop danceable as I played the first 2 songs always and brought the house down every time. But other than those 2 songs the rest of the album is unlistenable.
This might have influenced hip hop but it is badly dated and a bit boring really.
They mashed a bunch of other popular beats together and then talked over them. 3/10
I have no doubt that this album forever changed the course of Hiphop, but he seems like a bad dude and the music doesn’t really hold up for me.
Dad- 2 Mom- 5 Mike- NA Lori- 6 Michael- 5.5 Miles- NA Cole- NA Avg- 4.63
This starts out ok, but quickly becomes monotonous. Felt like one very long song.
I’ve never heard of Afrika Bambaataa or Soulsonic Force before, but wow, this is quite the album cover. Even though I’ve never heard of this artist before, a quick glance on Wikipedia shows that Mr. Bambaataa is allegedly a pedophile. Neat. We need a bracket for “best album by a scumbag.” What a competition that would be. My money would be on My Beautiful, Dark, Twisted Fantasy. I digress. I’m curious to experience this slice of early hip-hop. Hopefully it can make this August Monday a bit more bearable. I didn’t enjoy my journey to Planet Rock very much. The overall sound of the album was solid; I liked the samples and beats that were used, and some of these songs were really fun. However, I didn’t find the rapping particularly good, and I wasn’t too into the lyrics either. Even though I liked the samples and beats, these songs felt really repetitive, and they went on for too long without really doing anything of substance. The end result is an album that’s an overall mess, with songs that feel tedious by their halfway point. The only song that didn’t go stale with me over the course of its run time was “Go Go Pop.” I loved the tin-can beats, the bass sounds were funky and groovy, and the synthesizers oozed pure eighties sounds. This album might be influential, but I didn’t find it particularly enjoyable or interesting to listen to.
Good just not for me
Planet Rock: The Album is better understood as Planet Rock: The Single...and Some Other Singles. Not knocking Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force for the release — it mostly holds up — but it's not totally cohesive. In 1986, I can see this being in the go-bag for a house party. You could drop a track here and there to great success all night. These songs demand a crowd. I just can't imagine someone sitting at a desk, listening straight through, studying the groove and making cross-song connections as part of an album experience.
Influential. Dated.

Excexptionally empty, monstrously boring and dated HipHop album.
nahhhh not for me. more 80's mumbo jumbo
# 522 : Planet Rock: The Album It wasn't bad, I don't love, I don't hate it. Am I glad I listened to this? I suppose, would never listen to Hip-Hop otherwise. Did I enjoy it? In parts. Will I come back to it? Doubtful. If I had to pick something : Who You Funkin' With Listened : 11/07/2025
I can see how the sound influenced the 90s and so on, but overall it's quite boring. Nothing especially sticks out lyrically and the production is one dimensional at times. Some of the songs are also too long.
Pretty fun, funk 2-3
Old school hip hop with bits of electro, just not my style, these songs are too long
Seminal record + influential cultural phenomenon ...but also an accused serial predator. Music terms... once you get past the scratching, massive breaks, huge effects and MC shout outs, the album is really an extension of one track...I'm sure in 1982 this would have sounded like it was from space so 2.5 stars for smashing boundaries..
I guess I'm supposed to separate the art from the alleged serial sexual abuse?
Weird
BORING-ASS ALBUM. Not to mention the allegations against this guy 👎👎👎
Favorite Track: Looking for the Perfect Beat
Definitely an influential album and therefore deserves a place on the list. Musically, I find it hasn't aged very well, at times it feel like a cheap computer game from the '80s. Not my favourite hip-hop album.
It's Funk-influenced rap. "Dated" describes it well.
There's a lot of foundational techniques here that are cool to hear for me as a hiphop head. And a Melle Mel verse is always welcome. Overall, I'm not sure how listenable this is, even to me, an old school rap lover, though. The place this plays in rap is very important, which boosts it above what it would be just for straight listenability. Though of course, that legacy has been ruined by all the child abuse allegations. 2/5
Influencial but not the most enjoyable as an album. Worth a listen if you care about the history of Hip Hop and Electronic Music. Both have come a long way since then.
I probably should’ve said something like this when I reviewed that first Run-D.M.C. album, but I guess I can say this now: It is interesting to chart the course of a genre; how it started, how it’s going now, how it got there. Time isn’t always kind to firsts. You can hear it in the evolution other genres, too, like rock and roll. Those early, seminal recordings that shook the world sound pedestrian and dated later on. It’s not a knock on those who did it first. It just happens. All of this to say that ‘Planet Rock’ does sound pedestrian and dated to me, but that doesn’t make it less important. This was groundbreaking then and is worthy of respect now. But I would not consider my listen recreational and feel no desire to revisit.
A selection of singles from the beginning of Hip-Hop. This is important in the history of music, and is worth listening to by those who are passionate devotees of the genre or of music in general - however, if you're not I wouldn't say you need to listen to it. You don't need to have read Ovid to enjoy modern literature. Best Tracks: Planet Rock; Looking For The Perfect Beat; Renegades of Funk
2.4 2x not too exciting
no
Old school, funky
i understand its cultural significance, but on its own it doesn't hold up too well today
I get that it's influential, but it's also not that good
2/5. I can definitely see how this heavily inspired artists like Daft Punk more so than future hip-hop records. The beats are iconic and high quality. It does feel like anything could have been rapped or sung behind the beats for most of the tracks. Which is why this album in general did not age well. Because what they chose as the vocals is quite repetitive (not in a good way) and annoying. Like it is really just okay, and only gets more than 1 because of the beats and production of the music only. Best Song: Planet Rock, Looking For The Perfect Beat, Renegades of Funk
This seems like a very important album I'm happy to listen to once. Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
A lot of songs really went on for too long id think i like this one then it’d be another 5 minutes of the same thing and id get really bored. Who you funkin with and they made a mistake were high points
Same tempo for all but one song plus the exclusive use of 808s kind of tinted this for me. I need some variation.
Cool (and sick cover art) but ultimately I don’t think I’ll remember it.
just hip hop.
Early hiphop, with a couple of very few exceptions is just not very good. Let's just be honest.
This is your favorite rapper's favorite rapper. I want to give it a higher score because it spawned some of my favorite genres- funk and hip hop. But unfortunately this record just didn't age well. Similar artists like Run DMC and Grandmaster Flash would have been a better selection to represent this style of music in my opinion. One thing I did really appreciate was discovering Renegades of Funk. I always assumed that was a RATM original. Cool to find out that it is actually a cover from this album.
Not my thing. 5/10. Favorite track was "Who You Funkin' With?"
Seems fun, but it wasn't my cup of tea
Average Not my thing
Tracks felt like they went on for an eternity, a few decentish ones but nothing massively standout
Not really my jam, but can see the grooves and the influence
Traveling today, so only able to listen through this album once. Would a second listen be more fun or exciting? If we accept that this record is a hip hop record, then it is more inventive, lively, and engaging than most of the others we've heard. It is real people playing in a room together, focusing on call and response, group singing, and interaction rather than flow and spitting bars. That may not be the artform at its most technical, but its welcoming and enjoyable. Some of the reviews here say that it sounds dated. Yeah, antedated. This is yesterday's tomorrow today! 3 There is plenty of liner note to go with this record I see. The opening track especially, I am to understand, is terribly original and important; it blew minds and opened doors and such. Someone calls it ‘a profound record’. Well that may be, but it sounds like complete shit to me. I found much of this album about as edifying as a room full of 1st years who have just discovered the DJ button on the keyboard. Still - I like the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack a lot and I sense it owes a debt so I am throwing in another half mark to verify that this is better than the Bill Evans Trio. 1.5/5
2/5
Not for your boy
Based on track 1 this was going to be 2 stars but Looking For the Perfect Beat has definitely won a third Star.. for now.
Le charme un petit peu old school dure à peu près 2 chansons. Ce qui est bien, mais pas top.
It was interesting to hear Kraftwerk reworked, but for the most part this didn't hold my attention enough.
What?
Very thin beats with pointless lyrics. Kinda missing the 2 things that make hip hop worth listening to.
Funk from the future. We are now in the future but I guess still not far enough in the future.
Planet Rock’s really the only song that’s any good. Can’t remember if they break this album in Shaun Of The Dead, but that’s probably what it deserves. Not interesting enough to make it worth listening to the Gary Glitter of hip hop.
Planet Rock is a very influential song in hip hop but I’m not sure we needed the whole album on a list like this. Certainly doesn’t age particularly well.
This is actually kinda cool. The origins of hip hop. And it's got this cool/weird space theme that makes it feels super 80s, but in a cool way, unlike synth pop. Unfortunately I decided to listen to this the day that he died and subsequently found out he's a god damn diddler
lmao. for real? Planet Rock was alright, it was the best of the bunch by far. the PerfectBeat was the least compelling beat of the album. Where were these guys at? i spent most of this album wishing it were the Digital Underground.
I don't really have anything to say other than pretty standard sounding rap music with mostly forgettable lyrics 2.5 stars
Afrika Bambaataa was super influential for the time. While it's not necessarily for my listening pleasure all the time, it was pretty revolutionary for it's time, so that's to be respected at the very least.
Electric Boogie :-). Klinkt als een van de eersten in het hip-hop genre. De beats zijn wel leuk, maar het is niet mijn favoriete muziek. **
That Trans Europe Express sample onthe first track was fun, but it gets tiring right after that. I honetsly don't know why this is supposed to be noteworthy
You must be kidding me?
The Bootsy Collins feat. Run DMC album that shouldn't exist. I guess it was influencial, somehow? It was always so close to be good, but kind of always miss the climax.
Denne får litt godvilje som et sjangerskapende album for hip hop. Men ellers høres det ut som et skoleprosjekt fra gutta på MK. Definisjonen på noe som ikke har tålt tidens tann
1. Who you funkin with 2. Go go pop 3. Frantic situation Denne var artig! Men en 2,5

Recognised the first track but hip hop and dance electronica are still something I don’t really enjoy…
Classic track but it’s not…an album. Don’t get it.
I did not know that RATMs Renegades of Funk was a cover... RATM did it better!
Nach dere nöd ganz so abwechsligdrieche serie vo ‚the‘ bands chund jetzt einiges a diversität ine im bezug uf bandname und musik, aber defür bliebt mini bewertig eitönig bi 2 sternlis. As a collection of beats from the infancy of hip hop, it was pretty cool.
Every song is way too fucking long and dated as hell. I respect the influence, but that doesn’t translate to personal enjoyment. 2/5
It's not my cuppa tea but I much prefer this old-school 80's hip-hop over the vulgar NWA / Ghostface Killer kind of shite I've hear throughout this project.
Fantastiska funky beats, dess mera hittar ja inget särskilt här. Kan lätt tänka mig att de varit "influential" när det kommit ut
Not my style
Great bass and drums. A lot otherwise doesn’t hold up
I'm a bit torn here, because this album represents a lot that I really like, including the overall electro style and references to Kraftwerk and such. But it feels dated now, and honestly felt dated then. The rhymes are often goofy and childish, and the 808 style was not long for the world with more sophisticated layered sample based productions right around the corner. As much as I truly like Planet Rock and Perfect Beat, this is just a collection of singles, and only about half are really worth while.
2.5- I didn't hate it, nor love it. "Planet Rock" is a fun song that takes me back to NBA 2k7 and the rest was fine for a background listen.
I bet at the time this was great but hasn’t aged that well. Especially compared with similar releases from the same time period.
Early hip hop is just not my favorite genre. This has some iconic songs tho
Not a good start for me here
Basic rapping and beats I don't like. Very dated. Highly influential, yes, but not something I will relisten to. 2 stars
A collection of super musty and cobwebby early electro and hiphop stretching as far back as 1982. Planet Rock has that cool icy Kraftwerk interpolation and is a nice throwbacky listen for a few minutes but an entire album of this stuff is actually pretty nightmarish. Just incredibly cheesy and dated with iffy beats and whack flow.
As with some other albums, there's one thing being influential at the time and there is another thing being timeless. This has aged badly, and is a grating listen for that.
While I generally enjoy 80s rap, Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force's "Planet Rock: The Album" fell flat for me. Compared to artists like Grandmaster Flash and The Treacherous Three, it felt too commercial and safe, almost like a parody of the genre. Not my cup of tea. 2/5
Sounded very much like Run DMC - makes sense, they are of a similar time. Not my kind of music, but I can appreciate some it is well-made.
Purtroppo non ho vibrato...

Nicht schlecht
It's got fun beats but he's a pedo.
Oh. I thought this was gonna be better. Very shallow & flat.
Meh. It's a collection of previously released hip hop singles and it shows.
It’s not actually an album album, is it now? It’s fine for a few moments, but I ultimately don’t care about it.
What? Why is this on the list? I’m quite confused. This is something you’d find at a bargain bin in a second-hand record shop, or something that’d be sampled by contemporary hip-hop artists - something I’ve no doubt has been done with this record, as I know it’s been covered (Renegades of Funk by Rage Against the Machine) I feel like I’ve heard all this sort of music (electro, late 70s/80s hip hop) before, but this just seems to miss the mark in every way. Why not just go fully for the humorous approach? I can’t really fault this too much, what more was I expecting, apart from a general idea of a better listening experience? Not much. Here you have it. Weird.
I could see this being revolutionary at the time of release but the beats have dated badly. Lyrically it is great! The album cover is incredible as well! Stand out tracks: - Renegades of funk - Who you funkin' with - Go Go Pop
Det er lidt oldschool, funked hiphop produktion over det, men holder nok ikke længere
2 Stars (5/15)
Hard to disagree with the other reviews saying this was very influential but a tough listen. It absolutely feels so undercooked from someone in 2024. Definitely good to have heard but more on the historical curiosity side of things.
Kind of funky, but not that special really.
I didn't know what to expect with this record. It's not bad, but it's repetitive and although it's only 7 songs and 40 minutes, it goes on too long. Decent electrofunk tho. Definitely not bad as some of the other 2 stars I've given before but 3 is too much.
Kinda bad
Planet Rock still sounds great, but the rest is garbage.
Welsh Supergrass
So of its time that it doesn't hold up. Likely revolutionary on release, but has been exceeded in every way. Other groundbreaking albums in other genres haven't dated this much, it's probably because of the production
I don't think it's fair to evaluate this as an album because this is basically a collection of previously released singles; the songs weren't necessarily made to be listened to together. That doesn't say anything about their quality or significance. The title track is probably one of the most important songs in hiphop/electronic music/music in general and still a lot of fun. The rest all sounds pretty much the same and all the songs are quite long as well and that together makes listening to it in go a bit of a slog.
I'm sure this was historically significant, but some of the songs are too long for what they are, and it just doesn't stand the test of time.
Meh

Old, old school beats. Primitive and pioneering. Not sure it should be on a list of "Best Of"s but it definitely deserves a place in music history.
Didn’t really get anything out of listening to this unfortunately
I could tell from the beginning that this was not going to be for me. I pretty much let it play in the background while I was working on something else and thinking about other things.
Going to say the first two songs were great. Not as interested after that.
Too low
For hipster block parties in the Bronx back in 80s I guess?
dooooon't caaaaareeeee 1.5-2/5
Didn’t do anything for me.
Heille, ya pas de rock sur c’t’album là! Juste du hip-hop vide et mal mixé
A fun listen but ultimately a little stale production and by the numbers lyrics.
Afrika Bambaataa is an pivotal DJ in the genesis of hip hop, innovating on electro at the same time by blending the two genres. Unfortunately this never caught on, and the end result sounds terribly dated. On top of that, the mid-school hip hop sound was done much better by contemporaries Run DMC and the Beastie Boys. While I appreciate its ability to innovate and popularize hip hop, Planet Rock is not exemplary.
Pump up that jam. How could funk music be this boring? +1 stars for renegades of funk
I feel really conflicted about this album. Each song has a really strong base beat, but the quality of the songs themselves come down to how well that beat is riffed on. Some songs are really successful, others end up boring and repetitive, especially with the longer song times. The B-side is much better in my opinion. All in all solid, but not something I think I'd come back to. Top tracks: Looking for the Perfect Beat, Who You Funkin' With?, They Made A Mistake
Tried a couple of times, but I can't get into this and appreciate it.
I didn't hate it, but still not enough for a 3
142/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑
Not mad about the early hip hop
Not bad for hip hop, but not my thing. 2/5
Eh
I may be getting lackadaisical about this. But I think I’ve heard enough to know I don’t care.
Normally I enjoy hip-hop/rap music, but this album is not doing it for me so far. 2/5
Probably influenced some stuff I really like, but early rap is not for me.
Not a fan of the vocal modulations - very distracting, unfortunately, since it's fine otherwise!
Music so dated, that it’s hard to believe that there was once a point in recent history that this sounded fresh. Almost charming
Even though i know it was groundbreaking when it came out, it kinda feels dated today.
I found this album to be pretty annoying and not very interesting. I did enjoy that I discovered where the original Renegades of Funk came from though.
Mordecai and Rigby would love this
2 - All I really have to say is that I found it boring.
5/10
A classic in the hip hop sphere, but it's a lot more dated than others we've heard. The title track was such a force, but aside from that it's harder for me to find much that I enjoy sitting with. Some of the samples start reappearing, all the songs adhere to a similar formula. It's just a style of hip hop that I don't think works as well in album form. That early DJ scratching stuff is great fun, but it's done better by others - hell, we've had those others, look at the Gang Starr album, DJ Premier is an absolute wizard in that field. Bambaataa is a bit enigmatic, in part due to the fact that he's been accused of child molestation and the response from hip hop contemporaries was just like "....yeah, we always heard rumors," and nothing ever happened to him? Weird stuff. Music is fine and important, I totally understand the inclusion, but it's a classic that I'm not really feeling, particularly at album's length. You do a song list like this without including "Planet Rock," you lose all credibility. Favorite tracks: Planet Rock, Go Go Pop. Album art: Really dope cover to be honest, some mystical figures in space beaming records down to earth. A classic in its own right. 2.5/5
TOO LONG these tunes went on for what felt like eons. started off not bad but by the end of em i was sick of hearing the same hook
Incredibly dated and cheesy even for the time. The perfect album to be my first rating below 3.
Sicherlich wegweisend - aber für heutige Verhältnisse einfach ein sehr tröger Sound.
not for me
Välistä tuli mieleen Run DMC:n biitit ja välillä jotain aivan muuta. Kokonaisuus painui vähän vittumaisen puolelle.
Puh, eher nicht so meine Musik.
the planet was not rocking I’m afraid
not my thing at all
Excellent album cover
Sounded like music you play at a basketball game to pump up the crowd. Like EDM, I can’t imagine just sitting around listening to this
Although in the early 80s this was definitely new/groundbreaking, now it just sounds a bit dated and naive. I like a lot of old-school hiphop but this seems to work better as background/motivational music for working or maybe i don't know mowing the lawn? It's fine but mostly just sounds like a demo for a "new*" Casio keyboard. *c1983 4/10 2 stars.
wtf am i listening to this some weird shit like 2 decent tracks lowkey shit overall 2.3/5
Not for me. Sounds like an hire long loop. I understand this was vital for the development of rap but it doesn’t do much for me
I feel bad for rating this harshly because I did get some enjoyment out of it despite being extremely dated, but it's not the sort of thing I'd listen to unironically. Doesn't hold a candle to Public Enemy.
No doubt historically significant, but this doesn't hold up 2
Did not age well.
