Pretty close to a perfect record. I had so much I wanted to write, I listened to this several times over the weekend, but at the end of the day I just enjoyed the hell out of it. Even the tracks I wasn’t as into have incredible lyrics and a great sound. Yeah it came out a long time ago, but it transcends any kind of classic rock sound. Bruce’s music will forever be relevant for as long as Rock in any form is appreciated. Top tracks: Thunder Road, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out, Night, Born To Run, She’s The One, Jungleland

Say what you what about Bruce, but my guy feels! Every song has so much passion and love in it, it’s honestly shocking. Born to Run along is enough to give this a 3 if every other song sucked, but every other song is just so great I have to give 5

Really not into his voice, but the instrumentals are compelling. Definitely benefits from the wall of sound treatment.

Kinda corny with a self-indulgent final song but not gonna lie, pretty damn good. Almost makes me believe in the Springsteen mythos. Best song: Thunder Road

I’ve been in need of a good solid rock album. To be perfectly honest, I expected to be giving out a 5 for Mr. Bruce. Don’t get me wrong, classic after classic but I expected a tad more. However, after my continuous 2 star ratings and not giving above a 3 in too long I’m going to go high because this music style is exactly what I look for.

It's a weird album cover, no? I mean we're all just used to it as one of the more famous albums in history - not really a bold statement - and I know you're supposed to unfold the LP to reveal Clarence but it just kinda looks ridiculous in the post-vinyl era (wait now we're in a/the post-post-vinyl age which is actually translated into: "What was once sold new at $7.99 is now $43!"). It's a great picture for sure when you see the whole thing, but damn - poor Clarence got merely one elbow and half of his ass on the display shelves. Unfair. As a teen in the 80s I thought Bruce was hopelessly uncool - Born In The USA my ass, man that sucked - but I did like him as a kid and rediscovered this one after my anti-classic rock rebellion and well shit who was actually the uncool one in the end? Best part: the middle section of "Born To Run" - headphones reveals more than you ever heard in the back of a station wagon. Intentionally great flow to the entire album, too. Clear beginning/middle/end. I'm not a member of the cult of Bruce but this is awesome. Duh. 9/10 5 stars.

Gotta love Bruce!

This is similar to the Eagles for me, in that they're both firmly in the "dad rock" category in my mind (Spotify is recommending I listen to a "Dad Rock" playlist with Springsteen's face on the cover). It does not feel particularly cool today as a result, but screw that. It's good. It's popular for a reason, it's fun and relatable and interesting enough. It's definitely a bit generic at times, but so what. "Born To Run" (the song) still kind of slaps even if you're hearing it for the thousandth time. I'm curious to see how I like his other albums. This is his first one that got big and it's actually fairly short and tight (39 minutes). This feels about right to me, with really not that many low points (only 8 tracks). I feel like I might tire of his stuff, but this was solid (though a slight bit weaker on the back half). As expected, it's piano-heavy with the horns on a lot of songs. It works, and it's not overly formulaic at this point in his career. A few high points with "Born to Run", "Thunder Road", "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out". Random thought, but he almost sounds a bit Elvis-like on "She's the One". Probably just the deep voice, but this is the first time I'm hearing it. Favorite song: Born to Run Other: Thunder Road, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out, Night, Backstreets, She's the One, Jungleland 1/7/24 (we've probably crossed the date line by now, so it's not breaking my one album per day rule)

Thoughts before listening: One of the greatest albums of all time. Not a weak song on this album and includes Springsteen's 2 most iconic anthems in Thunder Road and the title track. Review: This album just hits so hard right out the gate with Thunder Road. I love the imagery in this song (and the album as a whole for that matter) where Bruce paints a picture of idealistic youth when a car means freedom and running away with the love of your life is the only thing that matters in life. Bruce's talent is in portraying the ultimately mundane hopes and dreams of the everyman in a way that makes it seem like the most important story that's been told. While the lyrics are the star here, the album wouldn't be the classic it is without the music that accompanies the words. The piano and sax take the lead and create an epic sound that adds to the drama of the lyrics. When a song like Jungleland slows to a crawl and then builds back to the "down in Jungleland" peak, it's being driven by the power of these instruments. Easily a 5 star album.

going into this challenge, the only song that i particularly like by springsteen was “born to run”. upon listening to this entire album, that hasn’t changed. i just don’t get it. always been more of a mellencamp guy.

This was not bad. There were a couple of good songs on it but mostly it was just okay.

10th Avenue Freeze-out and Born To Run are fantastic songs. Everything else just doesn’t really resonate with me. Bruce is weird because I really like some of his stuff but most of his catalogue is just instantly forgettable to me.

I have never seen the appeal of Bruce Springsteen so have never listened to a complete album. I didn’t hate it.

What can you say. Bruce is a legend. Some of the best music he made, on this album. Unique voice, legendary singer.

If aliens came down and asked “what is rock and roll?” I think a good place to start would be to play the song “Born to Run.” I’m not saying it is the best rock song ever. I’m not saying Bruce is the ultimate rock artist (I’m not even that big of a fan) but that song - and arguably this album - is just about pure of a distillation of rock and roll as you can get. Motors as euphemism about sex and talking about freedom felt while driving (or sex). The sound of it. Everything.

I really enjoyed the instrumentals (harmonica, guitar, piano, saxophone) in this classic rock album. I recognized a lot of the songs but Backstreets was definitely my favorite. Would like to give Jungleland a re-listen or two. Overall loved the album.

I never got the hype about Bruce Springsteen and I didn't particularly liked this album either. It's better than some others I've already listened to, there's a good energy on this album, but it's still too overblown and not interesting music to me.

A major milestone

When I saw the cover I honestly expected a boring country album that I would forget before I even finished my first listen. Lesson learned not to judge a book by its cover!! Incredibly vibrant, interesting instrumentals layered over top of amazing vocals and some tearjerker lyrics that don't feel unearned... what an album! 6/1001.

Great album. Bruce has a very emotive singing voice with the right amount of gravel to it that is quite enjoyable. And he paints vivid pictures with his lyricism while making it universally relatable.

Not much to say here - Born to run and Darkness on the edge of town are just the best Springsteen albums. Meeting across the river is one of his best titles.

I’ve never been crazy about Springsteen. I think this is a good era for his sound (even if I don’t find it particularly groundbreaking or exciting). Where I think he shines is in his evocative lyricism and storytelling. Yet unlike Bob Dylan, who allows his subpar singing to be front and center as a showcase of his lyricism, I feel that Springsteen’s voice often seems to hide behind the other instruments/reverb/production in a way that makes his lyrics less transparent. And at a certain point, I got sick of every song starting quieter and then moving into grandiose rock & roll. Is it a great album? Sure. But I do think it’s overrated, and perhaps unjustly, I’m punishing it for that. I do concede that “Born to Run” is an excellent song.

Personal review. A lot more tinkly piano and Christmas Carol sounding than the old timey rock n roll I was lead to believe they sounded like. Backstreets was my favorite.

born to run goes hard. i think i prefer the more anthemic songs to the diner piano vibe.

Good one, catchy and fulfilling. The piano parts are a bit cheesy at times but it’s a minor thing overall.

Classic album, would listen to in the background. Kind of like Billy Joel plus Joe Jackson plus Meat Loaf but not quite as good as any? Quintessential Springsteen though and I liked the simplicity of Meeting Across the River.

I always thought this album was released in the early 80's. I'm a little shocked to find out it was 1975. I had only heard Born to Run previously, but the rest of the album is in the same vein, although there is enough variation to keep it interesting. Bruce is an amazing lyricist, but not a great singer, yet there's a passion in his voice that's undeniable.

Born to run is an excellent song. Otherwise, a decent album.

Listened Before? No I know people go wild for Bruce, but I've never bought into the hype. This'll be my first listen through one of his albums in totality. Album opens on Thunder Road, which is a fine enough song. Really don't love Bruce's vocals; thankfully, they are pretty buried by piano and guitar in the mix. Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out is a familiar, plonky one. As far as Bruce goes, I enjoy this more than most. It has a nice hop to it. Piano line intro for Jungleland sounds suspiciously like Elton John's Tiny Dancer. A single listen didn't do anything to sway me onto the Springsteen bandwagon. Objectively, it is a fine enough album, but there isn't much here that calls to me. I really don't care for Bruce's vocals and think that the production as a whole isn't wonderful. The sax work is fine, but there is a certain cheese factor to a lot of the songs that I can't seem to get over. Its like Christmas music that has been polished and packaged as rock. I have always appreciated Springsteen's voice and the energy of his tracks. This album did not fail to deliver on those. The the greatest album of all time, but an enjoyable listen for sure.

Maybe I didn't really like Bruce because I never listened to a whole album of his all the way through, this album was very good. The amount of piano and saxophone and other horns really brought a whole new element to the songs. Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out is a song I have heard a few times but now actually listening to it that is a jam. Born to Run is a classic. She's the One really showcases the horns. Jungleland is a great way to end the album as a high energy song which fades off at the end. I really expected this to be an average rock album but I was pleasantly surprised. This is a very strong 4 for me, flirted with a 5.

I know some Springsteen but never have done a huge dive into him. Excited for this one. Well that was just meh for me. Not terrible just nothing that did much for me. Liked the last song Jungleland but otherwise I now know why I’ve never gotten super into Springsteen.

There are few albums that feel so aesthetically American. I’m certain of I did a deeper listen to the lyrics of appreciate the writing more.

3/5 - Although I still find him mostly annoying, this was a decent album for him. Just listening to it i can imagine how fun he probably had performing some these tunes. He basks in his own style a bit on this and it's nice to see he has his own thing. Still think he did it all for the women, but can't hate the guy for that.

Just an expertly crafted album, every instrument and wail is carefully planned but still manages to sound purely spontaneous and full of passion. As someone that hasn't sat through a full album from The Boss quite yet this set a high bar, and I'll always appreciate when an album feels like a true story front to back. Bruce manages this as the album starts strong and keeps up a solid pace through the first half to peak at Born To Run and then end with a denouement in the final two tunes. Really enjoyed this, more than expected.

At once novelistic and cinematic, street-level specific and universally relatable, with its humane descriptions of profound human longing and unjustified hope and youthful hustle and growth and compromise and disillusionment. What's not epic is just excellent, edifying and entertaining in equal measure. Every song is distinct and works on multiple levels. Yes, it's maximalist to the point of baroque at times, the only conceivable weakness. But that's a quibble, and can be considered a strength, too. And anyway there's no disputing its place as a landmark in the history of popular music. (Editors should be ashamed of themselves for the cheap, obvious and totally wrong Bon Jovi analogy.)

donio review - bruce springsteen has a very powerful voice and I never felt like he got monotone throughout the album, I liked his singing throughout the whole thing didn’t really see any lowlights, i liked the story behind the album too, a sort of do or die for him and he comes out balls blazing, for me personally however, I found the instrumentals slightly too basic on some songs but I feel like the album is very pop rock (for the time, classic rock for nowadays) so I guess that’s to be expected when your listening to an album made over fifty years ago, I also felt like to me at least, the lyrics didn’t feel too relatable or didn’t connect to me, especially after the last album we just reviewed. I also have not listened to much classic rock so maybe this is amazing for the genre but for me it wasn’t anything special (i always feel like I might be influenced by the fact I really liked the velvet underground’s self titled so I came in with slightly higher expectations). I also have read and saw that this album really shined because it was one of the first examples of a record company pouring HEAPS of money into promotion which bruce hated. Furthermore it seems like the consensus that this album in a live setting is much better. My favourite tracks were as follows 1. Night 2. Tenth Avenue 3. Backstreets As such I give the album a 2/5. // thematically boring, but springsteen’s unique voice makes this an enjoyable listen.

Pretty much a perfect album, start to finish. Encapsulates the feeling of being young and wanting to escape your surroundings for where ever the grass seems greener. Great songwriting, great singer, great band. I admit though that I haven't listened to this the whole way through many times. Looking forward to getting more into it and absorbing the lyrics better.

I’ve never appreciated Bruce Springsteen’s voice, though I came around to it by the end of the album. His music seems like a great snapshot of the time and I’m sure it was that much better to be listening to it in the 70’s.

I absolutly love the songwriting. It's awesome. The saxophone, the guitar, the structure i love everything. But i don't really enjoy the way Bruce sings and his voive. It seems slured i can't understand half the words. Granted i'm not american but to me he seems drunk. Put a decent rock singer like Meatloaf on this and it is perfekt.

When we resurrected listening to vinyl as adults, this was the first album my wife bought for me. Before we even had a turntable! I love The Boss. When the guys get together we will inevitably play some of these songs. What an album! What a cover (that’s Clarence he’s leaning on there)! That right there is the benevolent figurehead of rock and roll music, enshrined for me when he gave the keynote speech at SXSW over a decade ago. It’s worth a listen if you can find it out there on the interwebs. Poet. Storyteller. Blue-collar philosopher/troubadour who charges exorbitant prices for his shows. I don’t care. Give me Bruce all day. He has always been with me. Save me, Springsteen! Born in the USA is his bestseller (by an absurd margin). But this is peak Bruce for me. Some of the songs on this album are just…they’re just…I mean…wow. As soon as you hear the opening piano and harmonica on “Thunder Road,” just give yourself over to it. Hop on your motorcycle with your girl and ride off across the river to your last chance to make it in America. And I would drop my thesis on “Jungleland” here, but I don’t think the word count would accommodate it. Suffice it to say, a miniature masterpiece in all of it’s cheesy, 1975 glory. Phenomenal album all around. Not a weak spot on it. Give me more of this.

It's a good album, with lots of good songs and good sounds, some songs did not hit for me.

What I expected from a Bruce Springsteen album having only heard singles/the big ones, it's fine, the saxophone is cool.

I only recognized one song—Born to Run—but the message, the voice, the whole album was a familiar mix of the Ohio Valley of my tweens, firefighters, police, bars, pizza joints, Italian and street festivals, the men who worked at Tidd Plant, and Fourth of July at the Marshall County Fair.

Never been a huge Springsteen fan, but he has some good song, and I can recognize his talent. After listening to this album, I can see why this album was well regarded but it isn't for me. Overall, just meh.

Bruce Springsteen, an American classic. His voice and singing style is totally his own. This album felt like jazzy, soft rock with country vocals. While this combination works for song songs like "Born To Run," the country twang over the jazz and ballad songs clashed as if someone was repairing a porcelain dollhouse with a 2x4".

Meh. A lighter three. It's not bad, but I don't really care. It's more varied than I expected, which was nice. I liked the piano, but it kinda made me wanna listen to some piano rock instead. I'm just not really into Bruce Springsteen. My favourite song was Night, I think.

Bruce is great, the band sounds great and the lyrics are good, but I just never got into the whole product.

who knew, that i would actually like quite a lot of this album, mostly for background music but also as actual stand alone songs, to listen to in my normal rotation, some of them just made me wanna get up and leave and go on a road trip adventure, i love music like that.

That sure did contain Born to Run. Still quintessential classic rock, still sounds like the same song twelve times.

Jazz, Rock, Brass, Springsteen. It has it all, a personal favourite of mine

Have to admit to being a little disappointed as other than Born to Run there were no other songs I actually liked.

Not a huge fan of this one, but still decent overall. It felt like more of a showcase for the band (which killed it) than Bruce at times and he seemed to get lost in the mix a lot. His voice is also a little grating at times. Thunder Road, Born to Run, and Jungleland were the major standouts here.

It’s not your basic rock album. I love how rich the songs are, with piano, saxophone and other instruments clearly asserting their presence.

Born to Run is an absolute classic of a song, and Springsteen has a real talent for lyricism. Interestingly, in many respects this sounded a lot like Meatloaf to me in terms of epicness of some of the tracks.

There's no fewer than 5 Springsteen albums on this list, take that and do with it what you will. I missed this one when it was picked for me, so gave it a spin when playing catch up. For albums of all time, it's ok to good, for Springsteen albums, it's pretty run of the mill. Not really any big standout moments. Thunder Road, Born To Run and Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out are pretty good, while Backstreets sounds painful on the vocal chords. Jungleland is a sprawling ballad but overstays it's welcome. 3 stars

Oh hello Bruce. My parents are way more into this than I am. It is boomer rock. You cannot get around this fact. The music isn't complicated or intense, but definitely has a vibe.. It's like his voice has a tremolo constantly on it, I can't explain what it is.. maybe he's chewing marbles? I guess he can tell a story. The story of boomer rock. This is easy listening but it's just meh. He speaks to an America doesn't exist now. Review of Reviews: No you are all wrong. This isn't that good. Best Track: Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out for its bangin' horns and bass.

People complain about the mumble rap that is currently popular and I can't help but think that Springsteen is partly to blame. I could not understand more than half of what this dude was singing which I usually don't mind if the music sounds nice but in this case, it was a chore to get through. Wholly uninspired, generic rock that tries to trick you into thinking you're watching a fireworks show when you're really just watching a few guys standing around holding sparklers. Springsteen is basically a discount Meatloaf and it feels like his ultimate dream is to be Roy Orbison which he falls drastically short of. He obviously inspired many musicians who came after him which is commendable but it would be a better use of time to skip the inspiration and go straight to the inspired. Meeting Across the River was the clear standout and I don't know why I had never heard it prior to this listen.

This was a good record but just a 3 for me. Thunder Road and Jungleland and Born To Run were all pretty fantastic but the rest of the record didn't leave me with much of an impression. I think this one would grow on me with more listens and that was almost enough to give a 4.

Not my personal favorite, but a solid album. Understand why so many view it so highly.

Springsteen's best work and is a great showcase of his sound

if you told me the name bruce springsteen, i could tell you with confidence that that is a musician, and approximately nothing farther than that. i know he's a *good* musician, so this album should be at least 50% bangers. this is the 1975 release. track 1, Thunder Road: "i've got this guitar and i learned how to make it talk" is CORRECT okay i think i understand why this guy's famous. i have no notes this is great. 10/10 track 2, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out: mmm, that SAXOPHONE. i'm not as big a fan of the piano in this one, but still good. 7/10 track 3, Night: the descending piano/bells as part of the bridge midway through this song is just. SO good. this is a 9/10 track 4, Backstreets: it is about this point in the album that i think to myself, this music is much brighter than another album i listened to / rated recently, and i don't mean brighter in terms of instrument choice, but it is dynamic in a way that results in the other album feeling very flat. (gotta say, mr. springsteen really tears his throat out on this one) 8/10 track 5, Born to Run: titular song! it could be that every song so far has been quite good, but i'm not getting the same "this is the best song" that others seem to feel about it. still quite good, though. 8/10 track 6, She's the One: this one has quite a good pulse on it! 7/10 track 7, Meeting Across the River: this feels like looking out over a new york skyline with a sunset-orange sky, with the trumpet. could very easily be the credits sequence to an emotional, passionate movie. 8/10 track 8, Jungleland: okay THIS is the song that plays over the movie credits, but they're driving away from the camera, and we pan up to the sky for the first minute or so of credits, then cut back to the car for some three-line back-and-forth that makes a joke come full circle. fade to black, remainder of the credits. 9/10 overall: 8.25/10 -> 4/5. they weren't kidding, this Album really does You Must Hear Before You Die.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with this album, I like a couple tracks! but I do not like Mr. Springsteen's voice :^(

I was initially pretty excited for this album, the handful of Springsteen mega hits that have been getting radio play for ~40 years I've liked, but I've learned that outside of those handful of tracks that have transcended time I realy don't care for his music.

3.2 Sounds like a movie soundtrack the entire time, Bruce is good at like one type of song (Born To Runesque songs) but the rest are just mellower versions of those. Fave songs: Born to Run, Night, Jungleland

So I finally get one of the seminal dad rock albums of all time. It's definitely not the worst bruce springsteen album I've gotten on this list but it still didn't do much for me aside from a couple of nice songs, obviously including the title track as well as backstreets and jungleland. The rest is by no means bad but it kind of blurred together for me since I'm not a huge boss fan in general. It's also odd that the guitar is so prominent on the cover because most of what I remember from each song are pianos and saxophones more than any guitar. I'll give it a 4 but its the weakest 4 I can remember giving an album.

BRUUUUUCE! One of his best! Every song on this album is great. Thunder Road is an awesome opener, the chorus soars. Tenth Avenue Freeze Out is one of my favorite Springsteen songs, not very meaningful but a fun song none the less. The Big Man's saxophone on night is perfect. There isn't much to say about Born to Run that hasn't been said already. It really encapsulates what Bruce Springsteen means as a songwriter and musician. One of the best albums ever in my opinion.

This is a very good album. I like most of the songs. Love a few. I've seen him in concert and loved it. But, it's just not an album that stylistically speaks to me.

The more I listen the more of a fan I am. This guy is a great musician! Highlights were Born to Run and Jungleland. I think this is the weakest of the 3 albums I've heard from Springsteen on this list, which is saying something. The bar is high!

I love Springsteen so this won't be a biased review! There's so much to love about Born to Run. Thunder Road is one of my favourite songs of all time and my wedding dance, and the build still gives me goosebumps after playing it to death for years. It also has some great saxophone bits, like Tenth Avenue Freeze Out and the title tracks solo. This is a big part of the Springsteen sound and an element that makes him so unique! His vocals are incredible too on some of these tracks.. at times he's singing like his life depends on it, such as Night and Backstreets Enough said and the first 5 stars I've given doing this project

Born to run is the only song I mildly like from this album. Also just don’t vibe with the music and his voice is a bit distracting tbh but I can see how it would be considered a classic album

Never been a huge Springsteen fan, but I think the last few songs of this album are genius. Overall I see why it was chosen as a lifetime album.

The Great American Rock and Roll record. Has everything that makes US rock-n-roll great distilled down to its finest form. From the Wall of Sound to songs about love, lost, longing and manifest destiny.

Pretty solid quick album. Ten avenue freeze out my fav from this. 3.5 for me will round up for “The Boss”.

Not the worst things I've ever heard, but not anything to ever seek out.

Meeting Across the River has a good sound. The rest... really didn't gel with me. I don't feel like his voice is adding anything to the fairly solid backing band. The lyrics just don't really connect with me. And the songs often don't really feel like they build or have much in the way of dynamics.

When The Boss set out to make this record, he wanted to make a statement on America and what makes it what it is. To do that, he evokes images of cars and girls and dreams of something greater. These themes that are first fully fleshed out here would go onto define his entire career. Springsteen was also interested in employing his own “wall of sound” ala Phil Spector. Dare I say, he was able to achieve a far better sound than Spector was ever able to dream of. With the exception of the near perfect titular track, I wouldn’t call this the most re-listenable albums for my specific taste. But as a clear artistic statement it’s well done and has everything you need to understand what makes Bruce “The Boss”

Bruce Springsteen's music has always been about storytelling and this album is no exception. He captures the magic of moments in his life and encapsulates them so well into songs. The whole album is solid and joyous to listen to.

Not really my flavour, he goes into a bit of an elvis/drunk vibe at the beginning and it takes a while to break out. Jungleland might actually be my favorite song on the album, it feels like a really heartfelt story instead of just packaged nonsense

A stone classic from the first note. Springsteen earns his place as one of America’s great storytellers.

Excited to start this because I'm not a music person. Listening to this first part of the album while I clean. 1. Thunder Road: Didn't know this one. Didn't do much for me. 2. Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out: Found myself bobbing my head a good bit. Fun song. 3. Night: Liked the back half of the song. Feels like it might not be my kind of album but I'm hearing things I like, so that's cool. 4. Backstreet: Enjoyed the beat of this one. 5. Born to Run: Definitely see why the song is popular. I think I'm just not a Springsteen guy. 6. She's the One: Didn't do much for me. 7. Meeting Across the River: Loved the jazzy opening. Slowed things down a little. Again, totally see why people love this album. 8. Jungeland: Strong ending to the album for me. Definitely enjoyed that one but I don't know enough about music to know why. Boodro Rating: 4/10

A great album with beautiful use of instruments and a real feel good sense.

I am going to try and not copy everything that's been previously said about this album but this album is very........ bombastic? The title really gives the listener a general idea where this experience is going to go and it truly feels like (more or less in better words): "American". It reminds of a countryman's explanation of how great it is to be in "the greatest country in the world." That isn't a slight against Bruce, it just oozes a sense of patriotism. It can feel a little obnoxious at times but there's a beauty in looking at someone find their sense of freedom in a place that encapsulates it. It's, loud, it's passionate, it's embracing, and at other times it's wonderous. I've realized in the past, there are as artists that have something to say and it can be as simple as it is presented BUT at other times it can be some of the most profound things you've ever heard in your life. This is truly the ladder. 4 out of 5 stars.

The character-led storytelling and the instrumentation give this a very cinematic/musical theatre feel. In a way it’s peak Springsteen, in terms of epic, working class anthems about seizing the moment, finding the beauty in the mundane and all that jazz. But for me it doesn’t hit those euphoric highs he’s capable of as often as I’d hoped. The last 3 tracks in particular lose a bit of the momentum that the first 5 build up. I think I preferred DOTEOT, pound for pound. Still, I’ll give it a respectable 3.5 stars.

Heading into this project, I would have said "I love Bruce Springsteen," but after Darkness on the Edge of Town and Born to Run, I think I'd say "I really like some of Bruce Springsteen's work." I could have sworn that I'd listened to this album before, but if I did, I think I just had it on in the background, because the title track was the only song that felt familiar. The lyrics and storytelling are the star of the show on this album, backed up by some great piano and saxophone playing. The other elements on this album are fine, but a lot of Bruce's singing is really mumbly, and that's a shame since the lyrics are so brilliant. "Thunder Road" and "Jungleland" are great, but for my money, the title track is far and away the best song on this album. It's one of those songs that makes me wish I could sing well, because it's just an absolute blast. Overall, this is a great album, but I prefer Nebraska and Born in the USA.

Bruce and his band packed this album with BIG song after BIG song that hit on so many levels. This was the first time I listened to this album from start to finish and it did not disappoint. Lyrically haunting, powerful, and beautiful. Outstanding Classic American Pop-Rock sound that helped paved the way an entire genre. I’d like to hear these songs live one day. Yeah…. I think I’m going to do that.

I can understand how this is a great album for those it's aimed at. There's a great variety of piano and guitar, but Springsteen's voice has never done it for me and I don't think the sound mix does him any favors on this album either, some of the lyrics are difficult to pick out. Thunder Road: Harmonica. Piano. Guitar. I have no feelings about it. Also why does it kinda sound like a Christmas Song at some times... Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out: Honestly the brass is serving... Bruce sounds like he's gonna need a lozenge after singing this though Night: Christmas music again. Backstreets: Bro you need to stop straining your voice, it's okay you can sing normally no one will judge you (I will). Born to Run: A classic I guess. The sax is iconic though, so I'll forgive little Brucey. She's the One: Hated this, hope she didn't hear this brother. Meeting Across the River: I feel nothing. Next. Jungleland: If you can't get across the message you wanna convey in less than 9 min then don't be a musician please. Sidenote: The Rat. Overall: Not the biggest fan of this kind of music. Feels too “American”, but the use of brass instruments carried the sound throughout so can’t give it a 1.

An absolute masterpiece where multiple songs could hold the title of best song ever. A portal to something that sounds more wonderful than anything I could begin to imagine. Every noise on the album conveys that sense of wonder, even the darker cuts carry a sense of being in another place at another time.

Never quite got this one. I mean they're classics of a sort, very full expressions of themselves. Springsteen simply has yet to move me. Maybe it's age. He has strong macho dad energy, maybe that's it. I'm still the Oedipal Son and I'm gonna kick his fucking head in. I'll listen to this one over time and see if it transforms for me. For now I'll give it four for being an excellent example of what it is, it's just a shame I don't quite understand what that is yet.

Have been a fan for decades and yes there are a couple of great masterful tracks but not my favourite.

I've never quite bought into the Springsteen thing, though I can appreciate it. I came to the song "Born to Run" via Frankie Goes to Hollywood" which controversially I still think is a better version. Thunder Road is a nailed on classic and Jungleland a great song. I can acknowledge this album's standing without it quite being my thing.

Another album I own. Starts out with my favorite song of all time. Thunder Road. I love all of Springsteen’s early albums, up through Tunnel of Love. After that I feel it drops off a bit.

The hits on this record were hits for a reason but a majority of the album falls flat. Every piano part plays like a buildup to nothing, Clarence Clemons' sax seems to speak in only one dialect with no variation to compliment the mood of the different tracks While the band were certainly reaching for something grand from start to finish, it's generally a wall of sound and fairly indistinguishable between tracks. It was alright but I probably won't queue this album up again out of choice.

Full of a feel-good, constantly growing momentum. Surprisingly short and sweet. But Bruce just ain’t my thing. I don’t know why.

Of course classics like Thunder Road are familiar to me. It's a good album, expected great guitar work with an interesting mix of horns and other instruments. Decent listen, not really my preferred style, but more interesting than Elvis at least.

Sorry but not my thing. It isn’t particularly boring at least. It has its moments though. But the mix is muddy and sounds off, which makes it uncomfortable to sit through for me. Songs can be a bit monotonous sometimes. Maybe it’s the 80a sound? I don’t know. I understand why people like it, I don’t.

Springsteen at his lyrical best. He's a good songwriter, and he does his own material really well. But you can't talk about Springsteen at his height without talking about the E Street band. Max Weinberg is one of the all time greats on drums, and his work here is exemplary. I love that this album features the Big Man himself so prominently. Clemons by himself is a towering influence on this whole sound. His work on Born to Run is inspiring. That solo on Jungleland is next level.

Yeah totally uninteresting to me. I feel bad for giving it two stars, because I know it's important and sure influential but just not for me.

Bruce Springsteen is one of those artists that I know I don't understand at the same level as others. I appreciate his songwriting ability and happily will listen to his music, but I don't find myself reaching for his music on my own. I know he inspires many, but I haven't caught the spark. I do like what Springsteen does, but my enthusiasm often rests at "like". I occasionally explore an artist to see why others like them more than I do, and I think I've listened to Born To Run before though one of those bouts of exploration. Even if I have listened to the album before, "Born To Run" was the only track that is truly familiar to me. I like Springsteen's voice and grit. I like Springsteen's storytelling. I'm amazed at the cohesiveness of the band. The fills and riffs from the saxophone give me a sense of nostalgia. "Born to Run" is such a great example of the energy that can come from Springsteen and his band, but I don't hear this same level of energy on each track. This isn't my favorite Springsteen album. I did like the album, and I could come back for a re-listen to see what else I might discover, so I'll round up to 4 stars.

Broad, cinematic in scope, grand, lush, and truly amazing. The Boss arrives here and never looks back. Happy to be along for the ride. Simply put, a fantastic album and I look forward to seeing him live for the first time in six weeks time.

These are beautiful songs. I wish they were sung by somebody who didn't sound like they were trying to hold soup that's too hot in their mouth. However, the E Street Band fucking slaps. Musical arrangements are top tier and what earn the rating. Favorite track: Jungleland

Iconic album cover; Bruce singing 110% like his life is on the line; Jimmy Iovine engineered big big sound; lots of saxophone; what’s not to love? Pretty awesome.

Classic banger through and through. 8.5/10. A couple of songs drag a little long, not a ton of sound diversity.

I've listened to this album before, but its been a while. I always chalk Bruce up to his hits - which are deep on their own, but often fall into the poppier rock pantheon. Thats unfair. This is a fantastic album that is a rock/blues masterpiece that sounds just like Bruce. Has to be his finest work and one of the greatest albums of all time.

I'm probably going to upset a lot of boomers, but I don't get the hype. A few months back Bruce had some concerts in my country and everyone kept talking about him, people camping to get front to. I did not know that he was like the Harry Styles from the 70s/80s. But well done Bruce, well done. Anyway as for the album, Bruce is a good singer and he has a good voice, but all songs sound relatively the same. Which is fair enough because it all has to sound coherent, but I was happy to see that it was just an 8 song album. Favourite song has to be the lead single; born to run

I live in New Jersey where Bruce Springsteen is worshipped as a hometown hero. While I’m not a fan, there’s no way to not be familiar with his music. He’s one of the biggest stars in the world. That said, I was a little taken aback by his voice as the first track, Thunder Road, began. I’ve only paid attention to Bruce when I caught him on television singing live. He was also considerably younger on this album, released almost 50 years ago in 1975. The second track, 10th Avenue Freeze Out, has a bit of a bluesy sound to it, followed by saxophone-heavy Night. While cutoff in most photos of the album cover, Bruce is leaning on a Black guy with a saxophone. I assume that’s who’s playing on the track. Backstreets showcases the power of Bruce’s vocals. I appreciate each song on the album having its own sound instead of all sounding melodically the same, which is an issue I sometimes have with rock music. I can see why Born to Run, the single, was such a success. I’m sure it’s a big number at concerts. Same with the final track, Jungleland. However, Meeting Across the River might be my favorite track on the album. It’s an emotional ballad, and I love an emotional ballad. In all, Born to Run is a well-rounded rock album. I enjoyed listening to Bruce in his early days and see why he’s a world-renowned rockstar.

This album is a capture of 1970's NYC. 7/8 songs on this album are perfect... and then there's meeting on the river, an art song that is good and appreciated, but out of place. Really stops album flow. So many classics between Thunder Road, 10th Ave. Freeze Out, and Born to Run, but Jungleland is an incredible musical/ballet emphasizing NYC and showing off one of the greatest saxophone solos in modern music. Hits the spot every time

If Bruce was my boss, I wouldn’t get much work done. I think we’d drink too many warm beers in the summer rain. I’d never given this album a real chance. That was my bad. It’s an anthemic staple of rock that leaves you longing for middle America, running into the great unknown, and finally looking back realizing the grass may not always be greener on the other side of the river.

As I drive down the road in Good Ol' Town, USA, with the sun's golden hour filtering through the dust kicked up behind me, I reflect on the American working class before letting out a raspy growl, “BABY, THIS IS NOT FOR ME!”

With two critically acclaimed, but unsuccessful albums, under his belt he was getting pressure from the label to produce, and he did. He wrote a song cycle that matched the disillusion and financial pain of the mid-70s that stands as one of the greatest records of all time. So many classics that he still plays to this day. A classic record in every sense.

This is amazing. When you get a great songwriter, tight band and it all works. But I have the feeling this is the only full Springsteen album I like.

I'm not saying this is bad - I totally get why some people love this. But it's not my thing. It just feels so bombastic all the time.

It's impossible for me to give an objective review of this album. It's the soundtrack of my childhood and was always on in my house. While I know many of Springsteen's songs, I have never actually listened to a full album. The whole album has a cinematic quality that really comes to life when listening closely to the lyrics. It's easily at least a 4 star album, but for sentimental reasons, it's a 5 star album for me.

The energy of Meatloaf, the piano work of Elton John, and the sax of Michael Bolton. The Boss is boss. I didn't expect to enjoy this so much.

She's the One: Weird lead in and I don't like it. What the hell is this Bruce? Too loud and too flashy for a song that's almost never heard, especially after the overplayed Born to Run. Take it down a notch. 4/10. Meeting Across the River: Why does this start as a jazz track, I'm so confused. Bruce ffs just pick a genre. After She's the One, which was loud as fuck, this is quiet. Just pick a TEMPO FOR CHRIST'S SAKE. I'm just annoyed by this song, why is Bruce trying to sing a sad jazz-like song. Christ dude just pick something and go with it. I hate this. 3/10. Jungleland: Dude this is like the same thing as Meeting Across the River but instead of jazz it's a piano backing. Oh wait fuck this is good. Damn. He really came in with a chair there. 7/10. Good job Bruce, pretty decent ending track here. Total: 39/80 --> 49/100. Yikes. I mean, might be biased. I'm not a huge fan of Bruce. Like 3 songs in this album are fine. The other 5 are kinda bad. I hate people from New Jersey. That is all.

Enjoyable album but I don't feel like I got much out of it. It seemed on the precipice of telling a story, but unforuntately I failed to resonate with that. The music seems to be selling a feeling or an idea, more than something that is fun to listen to. Perhaps understanding where bruce was coming from with the lyrics would help me enjoy this more in the future.

All time classic but not my thing.

Heard before: yes So I’m still on the Jersey Shore today, so I feel environmentally biased. But come on. I remember when I was around 14 reading the famous Rolling Stone story saying he was the future of rock n roll and saying, “Pshaw! He’s not even as good as Rick Springfield!” Well, the best of us are able to change, at least that’s what I tell myself. I know every note of this record now. Top songs: Backstreets, Meeting Across The River (just to shine a light), Thunder Road - honestly, my top three change every time I listen

I’m not the biggest fan of this style of rock, but this is undoubtedly a classic album. Come on, it has ‘Thunder Road’, the title track, AND ‘Jungleland’ all on it. I think that’s all that really needs to be said.

I really can’t get over his voice which is wild cause it’s never this big an issue for me. Dude sounds like he’s taking the hardest shit of his life like 80% of the time. Otherwise the band and lyrics are solid (2.5/5)
