I liked this because I am a cowboy

The literal first few seconds of this was enough to tell me it's not for me. The most country of country. Nope.

This is a solid old country album, there is nothing that I don't like, and as someone that doesn't like country that's impressive. This is a 3, nothing stood out but nothing was painful or hurt to listen to.

Imagine any old school country song you've ever heard in your life and you'll know exactly what this entire album sounds like.

I like the idea of this (I love a bit of country melancholy) - and Our Private Life at the end was quite fun. There are some good songs on here - Pass Me By, for instance - but I can't say that these are even the best that Jones has written, and he is not my favourite country singer either. It feels very of its time, and a bit 'heartbreak by numbers' in places. Probably works better if you are feeling more lovelorn.

He's not a happy man. I'm not surprised with a haircut like that. It's a little too twee for my tastes. Great musicianship, but bloody depressing. Selling for silly, silly money on eBay.

Ummm this was kind of comical. A half hour of what sounds like a guy just playing a little banjo singing his little old songs. I mean the one thing that makes me happy is it was only 30 minutes, love it. This honestly wasn’t terrible but being real, my life did not change remotely after listening to this.

This is some high quality Country music. I miss when this is what Country referred to instead of small town this, 9/11 that. The Grand Tour and Our Private Life are specific highlights. It's short, sweet, and packed with a deeply emotional baritone.

Good lyrics can make you think, but really good lyrics can make you feel. It’s remarkable how these lyrics percolate directly into your heart, with no impedance from understanding. Beautiful in its simplicity, beautiful in its execution.

I actually dig some of this older country music. While it's not my daily listening, I enjoyed this album and could see myself playing it again.

Most country since about the late 80's is garbage but I do like the classic artists. I've only listen to compilation albums by George Jones before, so wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this deep dive as much. This was really good, so much so I listen to it twice.

Whenever I say I don’t like country I have to add a lot of exceptions. George Jones is another one. I like his voice, the musicians are always top shelf, and shucks, I guess there’s just something’ appealin’ about a sappy song ‘bout a broken heart.

When we go back to classic country, all i can hear are the parody songs mocking the genre. I guess this is a good example of this sound, but i just didn't like it.

This album didn't do it for me. Jones can really sing, but I wasn't interested in the stories he was telling, and found the overall album to just be *too* country/western/whatever. Not a genre I really like and this album did nothing to change my mind about that.

Godawful. I can appreciate old country, but this ain't it. Every single song was a variation on "love ma darlin'". The one (maybe 2?) upbeat songs were almost tolerable, but the rest was unbearable. I went into it open to awarding a star for the slide guitar, but there wasn't a lot of it, and what was there wasn't very good. Listening to this album actually put me in a bad mood.

This is a great album. George Jones' voice is one of the greatest in country music and the instrumentation here complements it perfectly especially the pedal steel. The lyrics mostly deal with heartbreak told from the point of view of someone who is almost pathologically in love with someone who treats them wrong. It lends a sense of unease to an otherwise straightforward album.

Putting aside my hate for country, this was good.

I liked it. It had a good mix of slower and upbeat songs. The 29 minute length does leave a bit more to be desired however.

Great voice, top musicians but the saccharine sweet, schmaltzy, over produced, bland country sound get tiring after a while. I didn’t hate it but am unlikely to listen to it ever again.

Hmm. This was one of the more enjoyable American country albums I've heard so far. Not sure what this has that some of the other ones I liked less didn't have, maybe it caught me on the right day? It certainly made for decent driving music on a sunny evening. It did drag on a little bit though, it was mostly too slow, but there were a couple of songs that picked it up a little. Dunno if I'll really come back to this any time soon but it was okay. Favourite: Our Private Life

I'm not real big on country, though this era is so much better substance wise than current country. This is pretty simple, fun, music. It's enjoyable to listen to.

Country with a lot of schmalz can be nice on a journey. It evokes certain emotions that Jones's voice transports over everything you need in country. It's an album you'd present to a newbie in the genre. He might not be too impressed but nothing much can go wrong too.

Nice soul-saving country. I wouldn't add it to my playlist, but anyway, sounds nice and pleasant.

5/10. It reminds me of Marty Robbins, but the without the cowboy charm to lighten up the downtrodden lyrics. Jones' occasional sarcasm helps to offset this, but this only really shone through on "Our Private Life", which at least ended things on a positive note, and is what pushed this above a 4/10.

So slow. So twangy. So boring. The two songs that weren't mega slow were kind of ok. I don't know if I'll every be able to give an album with steel guitar more than two stars though.

The length was a nice change of pace, but I'm not crazy about country music. This is definitely more standable than more modern country music, though. It kind of reminds me of what I've heard by Conway Twitty, at least in some of the songs. Inoffensive, but kind of boring for me. My favourite song was The Weatherman.

Why does George Jones look like Jim Carrey playing Kaufman in "Man on the Moon" I'd say the majority of the 28 minute runtime isn't for me. It's top-heavy, with a strong intro but not too much that grabbed my attention after that. For now I'm fine with knowing George Jones from the hits, though I don't mind this slightly deeper dive into his music. P.S. Highlights: "The Weatherman," "Pass Me By," "Our Private Life" This album gets credit for seeming to work for a larger concept, exploring humiliation in more ways than one. Letting his wife leave, he brings the public in, cynically giving them the things he knows they want, before tearing them down for showing up at all. Like with the ambivalent romantic attitudes in here, the contradictions feel very intentional, part of the struggles he wants to convey. Jones had long posed a stand for real country against sugarcoated high production schmaltz, but many of this album's highlights and commercial successes stoop to swelling string arrangements and flocking choirs. But if this was a sort of self-destructive choice in its way, throwing away integrity in a crisis of faith, he wasn't wrong about what would happen. People loved to watch him bleed. It's also a fun listen; the dreariness of the various midlife crisis numbers is concise, with some charming sentiments like in "Pass Me By" where love isn't a game anymore, and there's plenty of punctuation with uptempo sardonic numbers. Good performances on top of it all make it a successfully intimate album, which is one of the things that makes country music great.

George Jones is an artist that knows how to make some of the saddest country songs. He has a good ability to make you feel relaxed and then hit you with the problems that life brings. His songs are short and concise. He made country music for everyone and country music how it should be made. This was a decent album, wanted it to be longer but still good. 6.9/10 (nice)

George Jones has an incredible voice, but I can't imagine an album where every song sounds the samer than this one. Then, out of nowhere, a song where he rails on his fans for listening to gossip. I understand the appeal but it's not for me.

This album was great, just what I needed this morning

Best Song: Our Private Life. Slightly upbeat. In the right mood, this could honk my tonk. Worst Song: She'll Love the One She's With. Painfully slow song with lyrics that get more uncomfortable the more you think about them. Overall: I'm not attending a high school prom in the deep American south in the 1970s, so I don't think this is for me.

I'm not the biggest country fan but I don't mind the folky stuff. This record was pretty standard I think. As far as my undeveloped palette knows, this was a mediocre standard record. I guess one track I thought was a highlight was "She'll Love The One She's With". I enjoyed the record more than I disliked it so it's still a positive listen. Not something I'll revisit though. Step right up, and meet the best friend a song ever had. The reason names like Elvis and Sinatra and Linda Ronstadt and Aretha Franklin are so iconic is due to their unique ability to take a song and make it all their own. George Jones is on that list, at or near the top in the world of country music. Take the title track alone here. The Ol' Possum didn't write it, but the way he sells it, you can't help but believe he's singing about Tammy Wynette. It's almost like he himself wrote it about her. That song alone puts the album on this list, as it's one of the greatest performances in country music history. No Show Jones was known more for his hit songs than his albums, and he'd be better represented here with a compilation of his best songs over his lengthy, remarkable career. But you can't have a list like this without including George Jones. Anyone unfamiliar with Jones should go on a deep dive. Read all about George and Tammy. Enjoy the stories about Jones riding a lawnmower to a liquor store because his wife hid his car keys. Go watch his fucking memorial service, where anyone and everyone came to perform and pay final respects to one of the genre's greatest voices. You give one country record a good review and 4 albums later, you get another. I see you random album generator. Like most other Country records, the pedal steel on this record is what kept me invested, but it’s well established that I’m not a country fan, so that only takes it so far. Three stars, mostly because I really like the pedal steel as an instrument. Without a doubt, the coolest part of country music. I can not reiterate it enough, the pedal steel is the best and most interesting part of country music. Add that to my list of epitaphs.

Steel guitar is easy to love, and there's little else consistently accompanying Jones's voice. I usually let context inform my impressions but do my best to hide it from these notes. Not so here: There's something about the opening track, closing track, the marriage. Beyond words, but I read it and then heard it.

Pretty respectable country album to me. Vocals and vocal harmonies are really good. It's not very creative, and sounds pretty typical for an old sappy country album, but it’s really well made.

Dimery and co. still haven't found a country album that would suit my needs. The best candidate so far is Marty Robbins. At the time I wasn't fully sold by that album of his suggested by this app. But since then, it's been a downward spiral when it comes to the overall country genre. To be perfectly candid, I feel like we're hitting rock bottom with this George Jones fellow. The title track is sort of OK for an opener, I guess, but apart from "She Told Me So" (a snarling number nicely letting on that its narrator is actually a fool being cuckolded by his girl, with a funny chorus to boot), everything here is a snoozefest for me. Boy does Jones sound like an entitled fellow when he cries about being dumped by his love interests (almost as many as there are songs here). An interesting concept album would be to have the ladies mentioned in this record tell *their sides* of the story and reveal how those men actually lost their respect. But I digress here... Musically speaking, there's also a lot that gets on my nerves in this particular record. One striking example: I can't stand when songs just switch to a higher key towards their conclusions. It's just a lazy AND cheesy way to write your tunes, and this in any genre. And finally, Jones didn't even write any of the songs here (minus *one* co-write, I guess). It's not a mandatory thing for each and every album I like. But when you add this to everything else, we are clearly verging towards 2/5 territory here, even 1/5, maybe... George Jones is hailed by many as "The Greatest Voice in Country Music History". His performance on this album, "The Grand Tour" might as well confirm that. It's an example of, what I would call as "Strict Country". What I mean by that is a record or a song that doesn't try to escape the mould of Country music, but essentially repeats all the quirks and clichés of the genre. My understanding of country and its intricacies is not at a high level, so it's hard for me to properly rate this album. All I can say, is if I objectively liked "The Grand Tour" or not. Unfortunately, similarly to folk/blues songs, I am not a fan of this genre and in fact of this album. I don't find any pleasure in listening to Jones' stories, and the instrumental layer is rather boring and uneventful. Maybe one day I will find a country album that will open the doors to the genre for me, but at the moment it's not something I enjoy or I like listening to.

I enjoyed all of the songs. They gave a coming of age indie film vibe. Favorite song from the album is Father and Son as Marvel is my whole personality and it's played at Yondu's funeral in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

I appreciate and often enjoy the super-authentic old country sound, though at album length the slow pace and maudlin texture start to wear thin for me. This is top of the game though.

George Jones is often cited as perhaps the greatest country singer of all time-though you may not know it if your first exposure to him is this album. His performance is solid, but apart from the first and last songs, none of these tracks have the staying power of classics like “He Stopped Loving Her Today.”

Cover isn't exactly keeping any secrets is it? I'm guessing oldies country just like they still play on AM radio. Yeah, nailed it. Not awful (and first track is fantastic) but hard to really judge. Most of it is a bit soppy. Catchy, but soppy. Bums me out to see it's 99% covers, too. A good length at 28min though. 3/5.

I think this is the first country album I've gotten, let's see how it goes. maybe older country is better than new country. better than I expected and I can respect it. Last song is a little too much for me but.

UGH. This is the kind of country that I remember my parents listening to in the car that I would just roll my eyes at. The kind that the crowd was looking for when The Blues Brothers when into the bar that served both kinds of music: country AND western. The kind of music that sounds just... out of touch with the world and what is going on in America. Music that is just... white. Like a wonder bread sandwich with mayonnaise. Lots of mayo. Music you listen to while watching how to make a meal by Paula Deen. I can feel my arteries hardening while I listen to this. Moving on.

Somewhat impressed. I don't like country. But after listening to Sinatra's sad songs I realized George Jones is just doing the same thing, country style. If I'm indifferent but not dissatisfied with Sinatra then I can't be any different with Jones just because he drawls when Sinatra croons. I'm only impressed because I found myself able to put Jones on the same plane as Sinatra for putting together an album full of emotion-tugging sad songs (even if country). Simple plucking and country sound with simple lyrics and a soft voice. Didn't love it but you can't hate it either.

This album came out in August of 1974. There’s one thing that I’m pretty sure of. Since then, NO ONE has ever gotten laid to this music. What a depressing album. Luckily Jones was nice enough to give us two somewhat upbeat tracks with “The Weatherman” and “Our Private Life.” Otherwise, I may just have jumped off a bridge after it was all over. I kind of picture this stuff playing from a jukebox in a shot and beer joint, being listened to by a bunch of 40 something men who have either divorced or go home to empty loveless marriages. I like country music but I’m hoping that I never have to listen to another album from George Jones ever again.

I despise country, but I’ve never listened to older country (because I don’t like the genre), so hopefully it will be better than modern country. Reminds me instantly of the songs I didn’t like from the Fallout New Vegas soundtrack. Not looking forward to the rest. I’m just glad it’s short, because it’s exactly what I was expecting from country. Do not recommend. Just stereotypical country. Fav Track: none 1/5

George Jones is one of my favorites from his generation, but this album is disjointed and weird. He's one of the ones that put out a ton of albums, and only a few of them are winners front to back. I recommend I Am What I Am if you like his voice but didn't necessarily love this album. Best track: Borrowed Angel

If I could give this grand tour a trip advisor review it would not be flattering.

I've really tried to be open-minded with every county album so far, and I swear there are country albums that I like, but this was just so tedious

I can’t believe I’ve been handed country albums 2 days in a row, but for now: - Country is definitely not my thing, - This album started well, musically speaking, despite it not being my thing, - But it quickly (3 tracks through) overstayed its welcome, turned boring and unoriginal, thus emphasising my animosity to the genre.

Another fine classic country album, short, melodic, good vocals. The last track was a pretty solid skewering of how fans treat famous people.

So glad my granddad didn't listen to this bloke.

If you had asked me as a kid in the '70s why I didn't like country music, this would have been Exhibit A. Twang twang twang. This is Bob's Country Bunker kind of stuff. However, various people in my life and the aging process over the past forty years have had me come around to a new appreciation. I find it interesting that just a few days ago I was listening to Frank Sinatra sing in 1955 and I thought, "I think this is what traditionally masculine emotional vulnerability must sound like." I had the same thought with George Jones today. This is clearly classic country at its roots. Lovely.

This is pretty much a perfect classic country album. Just simple songs sung by an iconic country voice. A sound that I would not have tolerated in my younger years, but yet it feels homey as I listen now…

There's something about this album that I find very comforting. Maybe it's the simplicity of the lyrics where it seems that all there is to life is love and heartbreak. (Maybe that is all there is...) Maybe it's the resonance of the deep voice singing back-up that reminds me of my dad singing hymns next to me in church. It just feels restful and good.

George Jones is a big part of my dad's musical tastes from ever since I could remember. But I hadn't really gotten into his music like I have artists like Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers, Waylon Jennings, and many others. I don't recall ever hearing this album. Even so I knew going in this would be good. Really good. This is some really great 70s country that seems like it set the standard for what we think of when we think of country. Heartbreak abounds, but it seems to always be respectful. From the sad opening title track to the candid conversation from a star to his fans as the album closes ("Our Private Life"), this is a deeply moving and personal album that happens to also be a fantastic listen. I loved it and expect that George Jones is now a staple of my musical diet.

There are a lot of earwigs here. Released way back when... it does carry some themes that have changed with the times. If he changes them and re-releases, I'll give it a 5.

A bit better than i expected. Everything he is straightforward old country twangy with some good variety with up tempo pieces like weatherman as well as some more ballad types. Grand Tour itself is really good. Has some misogynstic tones that make it a little less pleasant.

Not a country fan. I understand Jones is a legend in this genre, but it's not something I would ever listen to by choice. Thanks for the opportunity, though.

Not unpleasant just boring

Grand Tour is in my top 5 favorite country songs of all time. The rest of the album was good, but not much else on here.

Gut reaction was what is this slow, boring stuff but I gave it a second listen. This is sort of a concept album isn't it? not sure why the title track was a single or why people liked it. It serves a storytelling purpose but it is not enjoyable to listen to. Still, i'm enjoying learning more about Country.

So this album solidifies that when I've said in the past "I don't like country", what I MEAN is "I don't like current bro-country". Older country has a lot more genuine emotion behind it and can also be very tongue-in-cheek as well.

4.3 - One of the strongest examples I've heard to date of good storytelling in country music. Another proof point that dismissing the genre as a whole is completely ignorant. Just listen to the the way the narrative unfolds on "The Grand Tour", revealing the detail that his wife left him and took with her their baby, is utterly devastating. Similarly, "She Told Me So" takes an unexpected twist when the singer is describing a lover who worships him but soon it becomes clear that actually he's under her spell.

WAY too twangy and slow for my taste. The Weatherman was a nice reprieve but then it went right back to essentially the same song over and over. I'm shocked this album was under 30 minutes because it felt SO SO much longer

I'm sure if I liked country at all I could have some appreciation for this album but I just hate the twangy vocals and the songs we're very boring. The song tempos felt like he was trying to avoid a speeding ticket.

I liked this. It’s old school country, George Jones has such a smooth calming voice. Would have liked more pick me ups in the music as most of the album is pretty slow moving. Don’t listen if you don’t like country, you will hate it.

Boy oh boy. The song “the Grand Tour” is fucking epic. Brilliant. The rest of the album is kind of “meh” not bad, some songs even pleasant but if I’m rating the album and not a fantastic song that is on it I’m going to have to call it a 2. Just not my thing. The one song almost bumped it to a 3 but it’s just not there all in all.

The Grand Tour is essentially a collection of songs about infidelity and relationship troubles (mostly infidelity), but Jones's attitude is frequently forgiving, unconditionally loving, and optimistic. At worst, he is willing to accept that people are the way they are and there is no point in fretting about it. Even on the album's final track "Our Private Life" where George lightly chastises the public about their obsession with celebrity gossip, he refrains that he doesn't mind giving up his private life because he came to play for them. He only asks that they remember he is only human when he comes up in the tabloids. I love the old-school rural way of thinking, where sometimes we just accept things. I used to see it in my grandparents. Everybody's got their troubles, often significant, and sometimes you just have to love them anyway.

album wasn't unpleasant, it was very boring, it's not like I'm country hater or something like that, this was just really unremarkable. 2-

Countrypolitan rules! If the record has a flaw, it’s the lack of rough edges – it’s almost too perfect. In fact, it’s as slick, shiny and all-in-place as the man's epic hair. Ingeniously conceived and perfectly executed. There are gorgeous keyboard and pedal steel flourishes all over the place. The unifying concept would be good loving gone bad or fear thereof. The even-toned, occasionally deadpanning crooning is steadily consistent – no matter how cheekily humorous, crushingly sad, shockingly earnest or blindingly self-delusional the line. One wonders how often he smiled (or winked) when performing these gems. About as good (and polished) as country can be. “Borrowed Angel” and “She Told Me So “are the highlights (for the irony, probably) but no real duds (save maybe for the closing cut). 4.4 for 4 (I wasn’t kidding about being too perfect and it also seems maybe more like a series of songs than an album.)

I found it to be a bit sad, with the themes etc. but clearly a very good country album. Not something I really enjoy listening to though. First track, ‘the grand tour’ is the standout.

Boring country.

when you hear the stuff you know why George was called “The Frank Sinatra of Country”. It’s OK, this “Nashville Sound” stuff from the 70s is so schmaltzy, so slick and so over produced. George has a great voice and sings with a ton of emotion but I’m more of an outlaw country kind of guy.

Every song on here sounds like one that is playing in a nearly empty saloon when a stranger arrives in town looking for someone, when one of the regulars instantly challenges the stranger, who through little effort subdues this challenger before asking once again if anyone knows the person he's looking for. Anyway, not my cup of tea.

Avant d'arborer ses iconiques rouflaquettes, George Jones était plus ou moins une énorme victime à la coupe au brosse et au sourire de premier de la classe. Tout bascule en 1970 lorsque des amis à lui insistent pour qu'il fume une cigarette. Jones y prend goût et devient tout simplement intenable. Très vite, il se met à répondre à ses parents, fuguer la nuit, et, cerise sur le gâteau, à fumer des chichas dans le square de son quartier. L'album The Grand Tour raconte en partie comment il a pris la décision de se laisser pousser les cheveux.

J'ai passé de très douloureuses dernières 18h. En effet, hier soir, au moment de faire ma vaisselle comme chaque soir, le niveau d'eau de mon évier restait figé. La conclusion était évidente: mon évier était bouché. Après de multiples tentatives d'usage de différents produits chimiques et autres recettes de grand-mère, je me rendis dans mon magasin de bricolage pour y récupérer une ventouse très puissante. Une fois rentré, j'appliquais la ventouse sur l'entrée d'eau de l'évier, et pressait à de nombreuses reprises, non sans avoir bouché l'autre entrée d'eau avec un chiffon au préalable. Après une vingtaine de coups, je sentis quelque chose heurter ma ventouse. Je soulevais alors cette dernière à l'aide du manche, et découvrit alors un petit bout de Frank Zappa, qui était probablement bloqué dans la tuyauterie et empéchaît l'écoulement correct de mon eau. Cette mauvaise expérience derrière moi, et j'ai pu replacer le petit bout de Frank Zappa dans ma poubelle.

This is about as classic Country as it gets. Nice flow to it; good for letting it play in the background. Not especially my kind of music, but nice enough for a solid 3/5.

This is a great country album. It’s simple approach to each song, short run time, great production, vocals and harmonies, and easy to participate in lyrics.

Decent country album with great runtime that doesn't stand out from the crowd of similar albums

I just came off reviewing a 2 hour long Smashing Pumpkins album, so this album was a delight. It's crisp, concise and flawlessly rendered. The album has everything you want in a George Jones album, that affecting vocal, the gorgeous guitars, the lyrics that are a total mood. It's a pretty perfect country album. Fave Songs: The Grand Tour, Borrowed Angel, Darlin', Who Will I Be Loving Now, Once You've Had the Best, Pass Me By (If You're Only Passing Through)

Country has a whole different concept when it comes to sad songs and depressing subject matter. This guy is more emo than any of those black eye shadow dudes and actually has the depressing life story to back it up. Music is straightforward with little variation, so it's mostly about that twangy country voice thing.

It's always the saddest, loneliest men who may or may not have been rejected that make the best country music. I'm not saying George Jones is the best, I'm just saying I can tell he is very sad and every song is about him losing a girl. I almost passed on this album because I thought the title indicated that it was a live one but thankfully it wasn't. Wasn't a huge fan.

I love getting country albums on here, even if they're unremarkable like this one. Never heard of George Jones, but he sounds familiar. That's because this era of country music all sounded familiar. Like Buck Owens we had before, this one's emo. I like how blatantly mopey and confessional this style of music is. Songs like "Borrowed Angel" are especially human and dark, this guy's accepting the fact that his lover is married. Weird, wild stuff. Again, nothing really special about this one, but it's a solid essence of country music at the time, and I dug a few tracks. Favorite tracks: Borrowed Angel, Pass Me By, Our Private Life, The Weatherman. Album art: Just like the music, unremarkable. This picture/tracklist combo makes up for at least 40% of all vinyl records for sale at Goodwill. 3.5/5
