Reviews (page 9 of 13)

Bob Dylan is Bob Dylan.

Hmmmph. It's ok. I suppose if you grew up around it you might be a fan boy. A bit folky and droney for mine. Still, better than Eric Clapton. 2.5 stars.

It was fine.

3/5 fine

Solid album. Almost my taste.

It’s Bob.

Iconic artist and album. Such a unique impression that Dylan has left on the world and his story is one of individualism and perseverance. This record captures Dylan at a pivotal time in his career when he was really fitting in to where he belongs, and in many cases, creating his own place to belong. Great record.

Nice to listen to but doesn't grab my attention really.

Very accessible and not too hard to listen to. Will require a few listens, but in first impression, quite good.

I like Rainy Day Woman. The rest of the album has that classic Dylan style/delivery which is so unique and almost funny (similar in his uniqueness to Billy Holiday). It's OK as background music.

I feel like this list doea a disservice to Dylan by including so many of his albums. If it would have included just maybe his 3 best albums, my response to them would have been "Oh, Dylan!" But by including so many of his albums, my reaction becomes "sheesh, MORE Dylan?!' He becomes just more 60s white noise

Maybe the least shitty of all the Dylan albums this list includes? Rainy Day Woman, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues, Just Like a Woman (the Richie Havens cover is SOOO much better). His singing isn't unintelligible like on Blood on the Tracks, and the arrangements provide more to chew on than the largely acoustic Freewheelin'. That said, his singing still wears thin after a while, as does the incessant harmonica. & jesus the whiny voice + some of these lyrics: "I want you, I want you so bad." Trying to imagine Dylan as the player he apparently was, and just struggle. Imagine this guy above you, yeesh.

Pretty good, I prefer blood on the tracks though. 7/10

So I watched the Bob Dylan movie...which ended up being about him and his move away from the folk genre and into more rock...based on this year this is his rock era after moving away from folk. I don't love Bob Dylan, but I respect the depth in many of his song lyrics. But I have to not all of this felt like the cerebral Dylan. It felt more like he was in an era where he wanted to get drunk, do drugs, not care as much about social issues and just jam with his friends. There are deep lyrics but there is also something more fluffy about this album. I actually enjoyed this one more than a lot of other Dylan songs and I could see why this was a commercial success. Some of the songs were a little off to me (One of us Must Know and Most Likely You Go Your way) and just enough misogyny and pretentiousness

The best song on this album is clearly Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat.

I was hoping to like this more than I did. Some solid classics on here, and of course I love a harmonica, but overall it felt too long and like too much Dylan at once.

Loud harmonica

I think I would enjoy reading Bob Dylan much more than listening to Bob Dylan. The harmonica shoots straight through my head like a nail. And his vocals are just not appealing. Musically, I can’t get on the bandwagon, but the poetry is great.

Not a fan of most songs.

I know it is a historically significant album, but it is also a bit annoying.

This may be blasphemous but I am not a fan of Dylan as a singer. As a writer, yes....Knocking on Heaven's Door was done better by GNR but Dylan's writing still shines through.

More palatable than expected

Have you ever seen those videos in restaurants where they fill a bottle with water from a hose and then tell the wannabe-sophisticated people dining it's something like glacier water from Alaska and see if they notice it's hose water? That's how I feel when I listen to Bob Dylan. Is this music actually good or is it hose water? I appreciate that Dylan is immensely influential and a talented songwriter and musician. As I listened, there was more than one moment where the harmonica was legitimately annoying and there was a point where it all started to sound the same. When it was done though, I was surprised that I enjoyed it more than I didn't. If it is hose water I kind of liked it.

I see both sides of why Dylan is so polarizing. I love that he stands for the working class, his lyrics are like poetry set to his signature harmonica, and he has a unique sound. I also understand how his voice has a grating drawl, his songs drag on, and there's nothing upbeat about them. This album is more on the negative side for me. There wasn't much with the signature Dylan style that pulled me in.

Bob Dylan sound

I don't totally love this album. It's decent but not his best work in my opinion.

Rainy day women #12 & 35 is een fucking banger One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later) Banger Banger Banger

This album is too long and Bob Dylan is too poor a singer to find this enjoyable in one listening session.

A good album. Not many standout moments but not bad, though the first song was annoying. 2.7/5 -> 3/5

Not really my style but I want you reminds me of hearing it in the radio

This sure is a Bob Dylan album. I know it's a classic and I liked 3 or 4 songs well enough. But it also seems to be Peak Dylan-Sings-Like-Dylan. Which is irritating to me after a song or two. Some of his rhymes are silly, as well. I dunno. I sorta get why he's so well-regarded, but I also don't. 3.5* just for his legacy/influence.

Nice album but not really one of the great ones by Dylan in my opinion.

Never really spent too much time in Dylans work. Really good album. He does sound a bit speech impedimenty which gets a bit grating

good tunes, his voice is silly

Visions of Johanna is nice. Wish I was listening on vinyl. As an album I’m just not that into it.

I saw “A Complete Unknown” this week and was blown away. Loved every second of the music. I was like, hold on, after a lifetime of resistance am I a big Dylan fan? And do I actually like folk, even down to Pete Seeger’s corny earnestness and Joan Baez’s supremely unironic lilting trills?! So I was stoked to see this come through today. And…ugh. I can’t get past Dylan’s voice (not Timmy Chalamet’s) and didn’t dig the songs so much. The poetry, however, is mostly incredible.

How many Bob Dylan albums are on this list anyway?

Bob is an icon, although I only know one song.

Why he sound like that

Supposedly this is his best work, but his voice is a love it or hate it matter. It would also take the right mood for this to click and I just wasn't in it. Props for the lyrics but except for I want you nothing stuck by me.

There are albums which stand as the greatest of all time, that everyone recognises as ‘important’ and ‘iconic’. Blonde On Blonde is obviously one of these. And yet, like with a lot of Bob Dylan’s discography, I just don’t get it. It’s not that I dislike Dylan, and I do own, and like, a lot of his records. I have owned this album for years and have listened to it for longer, it being one of many Dylan albums in my uncle’s record collection. But it has always felt that something I ought to own, not something that I necessarily derive a lot of pleasure from. Dylan’s voice has never Dylan’s more than it does on BOB. Many of the songs are based on Chicago blues idioms, some more successfully than others - “Obviously Five Believers” could be played by Muddy Waters’ band. There are some good songs here. I like “I Want You”, “Absolutely Sweet Marie” and, especially, “Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again” although it and closer, “Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands” are too long. A lot of the rest is forgettable, the worst of it grating and some of the arrangements, particularly on side one, are not what they could be. Disappointing.

I think this was a bit longer than it needed to be.

p87. 1966. 3 stars. Double album, so a point immediately deducted for filler. Another point docked for Dylan's voice which grates, especially on a double album. Bonus point for the quality song writing - lyrically he's light years ahead of the pack, even if it's unclear what the hell he means on most of the tracks - and for The Band. With a bit of editing this would have been an easy 5 star single album. BTW - isn't it amazing how much a young Dylan looks like Timothee Chalamet? When they create a time machine they should cast him in a biopic of the actor.

Enjoyable enough

Great album, great storyteller. Would be 4 stars but the balance between vocals and harmonica was awful and to hear the vocals the harmonica pierced my ears. Lots of catchy tunes though.

Bob Dylan is a poet and a genius. Love the bluesy somberness on this one. Harmonica way too high in the mix it nearly burst my ear drums. A bit repetitive after a while

Respect for the lyricism... and I Want You has always felt like a surprise bop, but I've never really jived with Bob.

This is another record I know well from my parents, but I don't think I have it in me to be a Dylan fan. If you took my favorite stuff from his first three "electric" albums and put them together, that would be a five star mix tape for sure, but there's too much stuff here that I don't love. I actually listened to all three today to pick a favorite album and I couldn't even do that. Gonna give this one a 3 and Highway 61 a 4 when it comes around; that feels right to me.

As Jack Black said "It's going to be ok..."

I was gonna give it a 2 cause i found his voice annoying but it kinda grew on me, still not a fan of country but I think it deserves a 2nd listen

I am not the biggest Bob Dylan fan. I do not like how he ends every single phrase on a dissonant note, or barely a note for that matter. Amazing instrumentals, however, and wonderful harmonica playing.

I normally enjoy Bob Dillon, but I had a difficult time getting through this album. It might have been due to someone mocking his voice when I listened without headphones.

Appreciate his talent, but after a few songs they are start to sound the same.

Too long and Bob Dylan sounds like gravel

The first half was a strong 4/5 but the second half kind of fell off and I’m not sure what happened

Good album. Probably won’t add any songs to my playlist. But I enjoyed it.

Only cared for the popular songs. Good but not great

Biiseillä on erityisen kivat nimet siinä mielessä, että heti alkaa kiinnostaa, mikä tarina kullakin on. Ja tarinoitahan nämä ovat. Etenkin vikalle biisille olis kyllä voinut näyttää saksia, en ihan näe pitkittämisen hyötyä.

Melodic but don’t like vocals

I really don't care for him. I'd like the songs without him singing in them. Actually the harmonica was awesome. This reminds of songs played in a honkey tonk bar and gives me flashbacks of scenes in Forest Gump. Fair

-I don’t think I can ever be converted to a huge Bob Dylan fan. his voice and that loud ass harmonica are very grating for me! -like with Freewheelin’, which I probably preferred to this, the songwriting is really interesting. by all objective means, it’s very good. just wish it was a little shorter -Favorites are Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again and Obviously Five Believers

Not bad, but striking me as something I'd come back to a lot in the future. I like the use of the harmonica and my ears perked up on the tracks that used piano. I appreciated the folk style, but a few of the songs felt more than others. Some of it didn't hold my attention much and perhaps I wasn't catching everything Bob Dylan was saying in his lyrics. His vocal technique is very interesting though and he has more of a speaky nature to his singing with many times he falls off of notes.

Good album but felt a bit long. High highs but some songs don’t land

Pretty good album, the real drawback is songs linger and overall a little long

Can’t say i’m in love with bob dylan’s vocal inflections. He can obviously sing in tune but he bends his voice out of tune in weird ways that don’t work for me. Lyricism is mostly great, sometimes feels like it’s trying too hard to be clever or is pure silliness. A few times I was caught off-guard by the beauty of his lyrics but not often enough to warrant above a 3/5.

Dylan writes great stuff but performs it like shit

This is the second Bob Dylan album I got on this list, after "Bringing It All Back Home". This was released just over a year later, albeit with an album in between. I haven't listened to Dylan's music enough to be a fan, and I'm certainly no Dylan scholar, and I've not sat down to dissect the lyrics of all of the songs. What I do see if that he certainly hasn't lost his penchant for these wacky, incomprehensible metaphors: Now your dancing child with his Chinese suit / He spoke to me, I took his flute / No, I wasn't very cute to him, was I? See the primitive wallflower freeze / When the jelly-faced women all sneeze / Hear the one with the moustache say / "Jeez, I can't find my knees" A good half of the songs don't do much for me. The romp of "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" doesn't get me feeling much, but I can't help but that juvenile, tongue-in-cheek call. Everybody must get stoned! Keep scaring the hoes, Bob. "Just Like a Woman" is filled with this restrained venom that I find hard not to like. Musically, it actually seems by this time Dylan had been warming up to more explicit pop structures. I especially see this on "I Want You". I actually really like the songs that more prominently feature organ, they tend to be my favourites here. Fav tracks: One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later), I Want You, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again, Just Like a Woman, Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands

Love me a blues harmonica, but there is too much of a good thing. Way too much. I dont get why Dylan is considered so amazing, sure, his songwriting and lyrics are good, but not mindblowing. Am I being contrarian? Probably, I dont get the hype.

Full disclosure… I listened to this album the wrong way. Had it on while doing dishes instead of sitting down and reading the lyrics along with the songs. Because of that I just don’t get what people think is so brilliant about Dylan. The only album of his I like top to bottom is Nashville Skyline. I found myself wondering if his lyrics are actually deep and interesting… or does the fact that he emphasizes every single word trick people into thinking his lyrics are deep? Maybe if I’d paid closer attention I’d have an answer. Regardless, this album has too many bluesy songs on it for me to give it more than a 3.

The song about everybody getting stoned was pretty good, but 1h 15m is way too much Bob Dylan for one sitting.

It’s Bob Dylan! It’s also… only ok? There’s a few standout tracks, but as always, I feel that Bob writes better poetry than songs. They’re more impactful on the written page.

Was very pleasantly surprised by this album. I kept pausing and repeating songs to catch a tighter grasp of the lyrics. It was fun, which was something I wasn’t expecting. His voice, though…

Very good overall, although another Dylan record I really feel will go up on subsequent playthroughs. 3.5/5

This could really be any Dylan album as it’s hard to discern much difference between any of them! This one was ok but songs a bit too long in places. A few good songs though so definitely not the worst Dylan album. Just same old Dylan really.

I guess it's just time to admit that I'm simply not a Bob Dylan fan at this point. Three albums of his received already this year through this challenge, including this one, and none have really spoken to me or really blew me away. I can, and already have, recognize Dylan's adept songwriting ability, but the gap between the aforementioned songwriting and actual artistry/lyrical delivery is annoyingly wide. It all kind of grows stale too, if I'm being honest. Too much content is thrown onto these albums without much substance in each. "Blonde on Blonde" specifically has some moments, highlighted by many blues & folk ballads about women and being lovelorn. It just gets duller the longer it goes on, though. There weren't really any worthy-sounding singles here, just a lot of similar arrangements.

So ubiquitous that not having experienced it at the time it somehow almost seems like a parody of itself. Though I guess that’s part of being iconic?

There is obviously some great song craft here, but I still want to launch that damn harmonica straight into the sun. Like every single Dylan album, if it was 8 songs instead of 14 it would have been much more enjoyable.

full album. lots of harmonica. too whiney

Delightful, ear-piercing harmonica. Pretty good, not as good as Freewheelin'.

Lots of harmonica in the folk

Storytelling and inflection

Some good, some not so good.

the best Dylan project ive had to listen yet. Still struggling with this guy on album length. Few songs were really likeable but it felt dragging to the end. His writing is very good but his performance and harmonica never really been.

I’ve been a little surprised to learn through this project that Bob Dylan albums are very hit or miss for me (well, mostly pretty neutral with a few standouts). While this one wasn’t bad, it got old quickly. Too much harmonica?

Started off very strong with Rainy Day Women (one of my favorite Dylan songs), by the middle of the album I was thinking "boy this is a lot of harmonica" and by the end I was getting a bit tired of his super stylized voice. I guess I'm just not a "listen to an entire album" kind of Dylan fan.

Too much harmonica. Maybe it would be better on speakers instead of earbuds.

Maybe I don’t get Bob Dylan.

Not one of my fave Dylan albums, but the poetry is still there.

Well I’ve listened to it 3 times today, I quite like it. I suspect had I heard it 10 years ago I would probably have hated it. I’m a firm believer in certain music happening for you at different times of your life. As someone pointed out to me, it’s now difficult to fully appreciate how ground breaking this album, Bringing it Back Home and Highway 61 revisited were at the time, but I’ve tried to keep that in mind while listening. I think it definitely belongs on the list

Not a fan of Bob’s voice, and for the most part the arrangements aren’t interesting enough to make up for it, but dammit if I didn’t like this album by the end.

That's not my taste in music. But ok.

I don’t understand the appeal. But I can appreciate his work.

It was an okay enough album, don’t see the hype behind it. I think the cohen album I got earlier was better overall.

Oh good grief, another one already? OK here we go, so far I've rated Dylan 2, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4. Is he growing on me? Will this finally be the 5? Or am I oversaturated? Turns out this double album just about broke me. Got to the sustained harmonica notes in Pledging My Time and knew this was going to be a long slog to the end. And it was. Please let this be the last one.

Eu amo essa gaita do Bob Dylan, mas eu achei esse álbum com pouco brilho. Há outros álbuns mais emblemáticos.

I can't decide if it's 3 or 4. I didn't grow up listening to Dylan, but he obviously influenced a lot of musician I did listen to even in my home soviet country. When it started, I thought I am going to love it. Rainy Day Women is an awesome song. Music and lyrics wise, the album is awesome. But after a few songs I found it was too much of the same thing, and Dylan's voice grows grating after 5-6 songs in. I couldn't take it anymore at some point. So 3.5.

Surprisingly boring. And the liner I listened, the more I couldn't shake the getting that Bob would be insufferable in person.

It was fun but it's not really my thing

After listening to “The Free Wheelin’ Bob Dylan” (my first ever Bob Dylan album) a few weeks ago and hating that album, I rolled my eyes when I got another entry on my list from this man. I cannot stand Bored Dylan’s vocal style. He sounds like someone thinking they can sing while constantly slipping in and out of consciousness. I’ll give him this though, this album sounds much better than the last entry I had from him. Mostly because the instrumentation behind it actually makes the album feel alive. Many of these songs have more of an uplifting swing to it, which I can enjoy. Aside from Dylan’s voice, I found it to be a decent record that I thoroughly enjoyed the instrumentals on.

probably wouldn’t listen again, but i enjoyed the journey

It was alright

Paar Lieder ganz nett, aber diese schief klingende Mundharmonika macht mich wahnsinnig. Lied zur Playlist hinzugefügt: Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues again

I don't really get Bob Dylan. It's not that he's not talented or his songs are shit, but I don't get the reverence he's afforded. Maybe you had to be around in the 60's (although plenty of younger people also worship him too)! Take this album for example, it was ok, there wasn't anything offensive or jarring on there - but to me it sounded no different from any bloke+guitar you can hear down your local pub on a Friday or Saturday night. In much the same vein as Ed Sheeran really ... don't get me started on that monotonous ginger cunt, it still brings me some happiness that after 250 or so albums on this site I've yet to be served an Ed Sheeran album. If (when) that happens I may have to stop listening.

I still don't really get Bob Dylan. Leaving the scratchy voice and harmonica aside, he's much vaunted for his lyrical content. Maybe they're just too verbose for me to listen to whilst doing other things, but having read some of them I still can't draw out some great meaning, maybe you need a 200 IQ to really understand Dylan idk.

3.5 You can definitely tell this came right after Highway 61 Revisited, being that Bob seems to have taken the full-band approach he toyed with on that album and ran with it here. It’s definitely an evolution of his sound, but I don’t really feel that it’s better - Highway 61 just comes off as much better balanced and paced in my opinion, but still, this album certainly isn’t bad. I mean, it’s definitely his most diverse-sounding work I’ve heard - besides just folk, there’s blues, country, and even some rock to be found. While I wouldn’t exactly say he nails the landing with each attempt, at its worst, it’s still at least pretty decent in most cases. Lyrically, it’s a lot more romantic/hornier than his past work, to a degree that I didn’t even realize the guy was capable of, but it actually results in some of the best songs here (and quite possibly across his entire catalog) - for me, those being Visions of Johanna, Just Like a Woman, I Want You, and the powerful ballad, Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands. It’s not quite as strong of a song as Desolation Row in my opinion, but it is a very solid concluding track nonetheless. While there are definitely some songs I liked more than others, there was really only one song that stood out to me as one I disliked - and I’m pretty sure it’s a bit of a hot take, so brace yourself if you’re like a 50+ music nerd, cause this’ll probably hurt. I just don’t get Rainy Day Women #12 & 35. Yes, I get it’s about weed, but it has the most annoying carnival-esque marching band backdrop to it. Knowing Dylan, it’s probably a purposeful juxtaposition, but I don’t think that makes the song any less corny. That said, the vast majority of the guy’s music has been something that has required time to grow on me, so it’s totally possible that’s the case here as well. Overall, I think this is a mostly strong Dylan record, particularly in the lyrical department, I’m just not quite yet sold on hearing full accompaniment behind him. Though, considering my thoughts on The Band’s debut breakaway record from Dylan, maybe it’s just these guys I’m not particularly fond of.

I’m a fan of Bob Dylan but not his best album.

It’s alright

I wish I enjoyed Dylan more, but I just feel ambivalent about his music… there are many others here that could tell about how great an artist he is, but it’s just okay to me. 3.5/5

It is listenable, but like much of Bob Dylan very samey. A nice balance of different musical styles. Can't see myself wanting to listen to the entire album again

its alright, never been the biggest Bob Dylan fan, but he does put out some heat. Most of this, unfortunately, was not it though.

Really cool album, might not be his "best", but there is something about Dylan where his music either works, or it doesn't quite get there. A few tracks don't quite stick the landing for me, but overall there's some really great tunes that have you scrunching your face as guitar bends and harmonica slides shape blues and folk sentiments into something that seeps warmth.

Have long been a fan of Bob, and this is a great album. It feels a little less human than some of his other stuff, and maybe more polished.

pela importancia 3 / 4

Genuinely surprised I liked this at all. I only know a few songs by Dylan and I really am not that wild about them. Definitely actually a few tracks on this one I really liked. At it's worst though his voice is annoying and the music too sparse to make up for it. At it's best it's a fantastic expression of his poetry. The lyrics are definitely the most powerful part of the music, even the songs I dislike are that way. All in all, this averages out to a 3* for me. Worth a listen once in your life, it may be exactly your thing.

Love the lyrics. Never got used to the voice

Not using a private spotify session, though I thought about it. It's hard to get past Dylan's nasally drone and my dislike of that much harmonica, but the melody sound nice and I've been told that he is a great lyricist. There is definitely appeal here, but I don't get why people rave.

i think bob dylan would be way cooler if there was less of him. maturing is not immediately giving this album one star in retribution for having to listen to too much bob in the car as a kid. 3 points for being way nicer than yesterday's (perspective is a wonderful thing), harmonica skillz, and also the fact that the record cover is great to take photos of over your face from a slight distance

I have similar feelings about this album to Dylan's earlier album Bringing It All Back Home, although the latter is better in my eyes. Dylan has a weird vocal that, in many cases/genres, would be very unappetising – but he generally makes it work. His sound is also immediately recognisable and distinctive, primarily because of his voice but also his melodies, which often center around "blue notes" (e.g. F# or Eb during a C major chord) or his very long rambly lines that only commit to rhyming at the very end (or sometimes not at all). These "Dylanesque" motifs are strangely comforting amidst all the horrific Britpop, hip-hop, and post-punk on this list. It's also fun to see these patterns and how they shaped folk rock for years to come. Unfortunately, unlike his predecessor albums Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde On Blonde doesn't have any particularly standout tracks. They're all just kind of "there" – good, but not great. (I'm disregarding the lyrics here, because that's the way I prefer to listen to music. Judging by the reviews, the lyrics easily bump this album to a 4 or higher.) Absent are the fresh organs and biting phrasing of Like A Rolling Stone, or the memorable melody of Mr Tambourine Man and Subterranean Homesick Blues. In addition, there's really a lack of variety and adventurousness (other than being one of the very first double-albums) – especially looking at it through a modern lens. 3/5 Key tracks: Just Like A Woman, I Want You, Absolutely Sweet Marie

Not the biggest Dylan fan. This is fine.

Boring

3 out of 5. I'd say this matches Freewheelin' as far as placement goes, maybe just above. Some songs, like Mobile, ran on longer than they probably should have. I said it on my last Dylan album review and I'll say it again that this whole list needs to be revised and lower the amount of duplicate artists appearing.

I'm more a seventies Dylan fan. Some of it is probably a bit dated and hippy lyrically. I've owned this album for decades but haven't really played it or thought about it for a long time. I feel that very few double albums can maintain a consistent standard throughout this one probably makes seventy five percent.

3.5☆/5 09.02.2024

Blurry man, for god's sake, stop abusing that harmonica

I'm a Phil Ochs guy but this wasn't bad

Not my cup of tea but I respect the artist

Why did he think (and his fans) that piano bar music was ok? A few great songs but not many.

This album has some good tracks and the also brings to mind the realization that a little Bob Dylan goes a long way.

Didn’t hate this one, definitely prefer more of his other work but this one wasn’t too bad. Added a few to the playlist so I came away respecting it

6.5/10 This is very Bob Dylan, so if you like him you’ll like this. It plays into his strength - singing style, poetic lyrics, harmonica, guitar. But it doesn’t exactly mix it up, making it very monotone and probably 3 to 4 tracks too long. Sorry bob, you get boring after a while. Best: One of Us Must Know

solid effort from the weird little fella

He really does have a stupid voice though doesn't he

I really don't care too much for Bob, but can't deny his greatness and relevance to the times and music at large.

Bob Dylan is mid

Enjoyed the music.

It doesn't manage to keep my interest. I'm always sound>lyrics so Dylan is often a miss for me.

Hupsista keikkaa ei ole arvostekua muistettu laittaa... niin masentava albumi masentavat aiheet en itse pidä masennuksen harjoittamisesta onsekumma tälläistä halutaan vapaaehtoisesti päähän laitattaa..

Not a huge Dylan fan. It's a pretty boring album and some of the songs are dumb.

Very chill just very samey

Ever feel like the odd one out? I intellectually 'get' that he's a good song writer . The folk Blues style music. But his wonky wah-wah / louche, almost drunkassstykised singing voice (like when Alan Ginsburg did that reading) stops me enjoying or getting any real emotional connection to the music. Especially in this album. He may have captured the voice of a generation. Try as I might I can't plug in .

Shall I be the skipping record and repeat all that others have said before me? Dylan might be an auteur, and technically speaking a chansonnier, but his delivery shouldn't be something applauded... And then, while I am typing this, "Just Like a Woman" plays, and you forget about the fact that Dylan doesn't have a pretty voice, and you lose yourself in the magic that can be music. So, 3 1/2 ***

Pretty good after all these years.

Bon harmonica, but rien de si nice que ça

Blah, blah, stoned, blah.

Not nearly as good as the other Dylan albums I’ve heard. 3.1 stars

I can't quite put my finger on why, but I had an even harder time getting into this one than Highway 61 Revisited. Still more lyrical focus than I would like and his voice is still bad, but it was fine. Saving I Want You. I will have to revisit this one with more attention to the lyrics.

Liked way more than expected, but too much harmonica.

Love the harmonica and listening with headphones in. Damn he really likes that harmonica though. It gets a little shrill. Had to skip the woman one. Kinda skeeved me out

Blonde on Blonde by Bob Dylan is like eating your vegetables as a kid. Everyone tells you it’s good for you, but you still end up swallowing a few without chewing to get them all down.

Another god-damn double album. Apple music describes it as the "first double-album masterpiece of the rock 'n' roll era". We'll see. Starting to be concerned about time about 1/4th of the way through this beast of a list. Although last week was great, 2Pac excepted. This is the hipster music origin story. "Bob Dylan" is a brand, not a dude. An acquired taste. If I was 17 in 1966, I would have been on the bandwagon. But I wasn't, so I'm not, although the influence is EVERYWHERE. I'm going to make a little list right now, off the top of my tiny head (also going to make this review into a Bob Dylan-type song later): The Byrds, Every god-forsaken California Sound (and by extension, Yacht-Rock) associated artist from the Doors (yes, the Doors were the progenitors) to The Eagles (Dylan made it okay for these fresh suburban post-hippies to ape a Country vibe) to Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, etc etc etc ad nauseam, Post-British Invasion - look at Pete Townsend's pretentiousness after 1966 - every rock musician smokes a bowl and thinks they're now TS Eliot, Tom Fucking Waits and his ilk (e.g. Nick Cave), David Bowie, Bono, Johnny Cash, Patti Smith, The Clash (wat?), Springsteen and by extension Bon Jovi. I could go on, but once again, TIME IS NOT ON MY SIDE. Then think about the artists THOSE artists influenced. That being said, he is a wordsmith nonpareil. (<-- see what I did there?) Also his anti-authoritarian, anti-mainstream approach does expand his appeal to the more underground among us. I have a philosophy about music that I want throw out here, and that is that there are two kinds of rock music. The first is Elvis based, the other is Dylan based. Every one, without fail, takes a spot on that spectrum somewhere.

The tail end is a little sluggish/a downer but the first 10 or so songs are a hell of a collection of tunes.

He’s back! Lots of brilliance here. Not big on his voice

Didn’t love this album but it has some great tracks. Dylan is not for everyone, but he is an icon in the world of folk rock and the transition of folk from the early 60s to electronic folk rock.

Slow burner but some memorable tracks. Takes some effort to get through the slightly grating voice/harmonica.

3.5 stars

Meh, just fine

Achei ok, mas não ouviria de novo

Bob Dylan is a struggle to listen to for anything longer than 10 or so minutes for me. I can appreciate a few of his songs. He certainly can tell an amazing story, but his voice is just….I don’t know, bad? This album did have a few winners. Just Like a Woman is one of my favorite Dylan songs, and Stuck Inside of Mobile is a classic, but overall I fail to see the appeal.

It's a bob dylan album

Lots of cool imagery in some of these songs but a bit too much Dylan for me in one installment.

I like Rainy Say Woman, Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat; I kind of like Pledging My Time, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again

Its a good album, just not my type right now. Fav songs: Visions Of Johanna, I Want You, Just Like a Woman, Sad-Eyed Lady Least Fav Song : Pledging my time

Went on for a wee bit too long, the harmonica was excessive on some tracks, but enjoyed it

Not a huge fan but this had that classic sound. Interesting how they had to find a way to mix in other instruments to make his songs more mainstream

To me, there is one album worth of material here. It is hard to reach that conclusion about Dylan and this album that is so highly rated but so much of this album sounded the same. Exceptions include "Sad-eyed Lady of the Lowlands" and 'Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" just because the lyrics are so creative and opaque and original.

Ist ok aber nicht mein Geschmack

I'm sure it's good, it's just not my thing

Not a huge fan of Bob Dylan. Mostly because the music get a backseat for the lyrical content (Which is what allot of people think is the strong point and i can respect that). His voice can become a bit boring in the long run but the album is not listenable but it does not speak to me who often are more interested in melody and harmony more than lyrics.

Im sure I will like this a lot more on re-listen i just don't really care right now. LOL. Like i get it bob. I get it. You are bob dylan. Happy for you.

The lyrics are beautiful, the melodies are beautiful, and then the harmonica arrives like a car alarm.

Nice 60’s album, I don’t understand a chunk of it. Maybe I’m not n the right generation.

Liked the songs, though it was tough to hear his voice for that song.

Way too much Harmonica. Very Folky and bluesy.

Certainly some great songs, but also a lot of forgettable stuff. When Dylan is on he's on, but when he's off, it's pretty unlistenable. Take the best tracks and put them on a single album and you might have a 4.

Too much harmonica for me early on. Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is a heckuva song.

Every Dylan album im thinking "oh god not again" but it always ends up alright, it's like Gammon. Also, I want to shove that Harmonica up his arse.

Although I admire many of Bob Dylan's lyrics, I tend to find him a hard listen. His voice and performance style are polarizing, and I fall more on the side of "not really into it."

I didnt like it

Amazing song writer, with a pretty annoying singing voice. The weird thing is that his voice grows on you as the album goes on.

I’m not a Bob fan. There’s some good songs and I can tell it’s a good album, but it’s not for me.

The album was fine, I'm just not a big Bob Dylan fan. I really can't stand his voice.

It's not my favourite Dylan album but there are a few good tracks. My favourite would probably be Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands. Low 3.

Would be pretty good if most of the songs didn't drag on for too long.

Some classics, a few fillers. Can get a bit samey…..

Musically very good, however Dylan's voice in this album is grating

Personal rating 6.5/10

Didn't like this as much as Freewheelin' but I could see it becoming a 4 if I spent more time with it.

BOB DYLAN.... I DONT LIKE HIM but this album was okay! I got used to his vocals and there's a couple of good songs

I thought I was going to like this a bit more than I did. It felt like a folky version of Velvet Underground, and left some to be desired. Nothing really caught my eye. Or ear...

Wow Bob this is downright listenable! Though damn that harmonica tone can get shrill. And then it's more of the goddamn blues. Jesus I'm so tired of the blues.

Nice album. Liked it

Dylan is an great song writer, but sadly an awful singer. This album would easily be 4 or 5 stars if only someone else was singing.

Lyrically strong, not my vibe for the most part.

“I want you” truly terrible. First few blues songs are great but this is peak Dylan whine

sorry :(

Nasaly and monotone

I only recognised 'Just Like a Woman' but the rest of the album wasn't overly offensive. The algorhythm that kicked in after played much better tunes.

This album represents everything I like and don't like about Dylan: the songs are passionate and heartfelt, but they tend to ramble on. Like a lot of folk/pop, the music here is often verbose. I guess I never bought into the idea that true profundity required quite so many words. That said, the musicianship is fantastic.

I’m not much of a fan of harmonica, so we’re not off to a good start. I’ve tried but I just can’t find a way to really like most of Dylan’s music. Some I can, sure. I’d rather sit and read his lyrics than listen to a lot of the music. This will get a higher score than I would give for just my enjoyment because of the importance of the record.

I don’t care much for Bobby D. It was alright, I suppose.

No matter how much I love Bobs music…some is saved to my favorites…it’s hard for me to listen to an entire album in succession. It’s his voice. It needs to be sparsed out for me.

B Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 3 Pledging My Time 3 Visions Of Johanna 3 One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later) 3 I Want You 5 Memphis Blues Again 5 Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat 3 Just Like A Woman 3 Most Likely You Go Your Way And I'll Go Mine 3 Temporary Like Achilles 3 Absolutely Sweet Marie 3 4th Time Around 3 Obviously 5 Believers 3 Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands 4 Definitely my favorite Dylan album so far. Only one left.

An album I know pretty well. Nice to listen to it fully looking forward to the next one though cuz this was really new

Not my favorite Bob Dylan. No real hits and too much harmonica. I like the back half better though

all I hear is Stewie singing. dig the sounds

I know this supposed to be a masterpiece, but this album is just okay. I love many things about Bob Dylan, and have many of his songs on various playlists. I think he is best consumed a song or two at a time. As for this album...The lyrics are clearly the best part of it. The harmonica on this album makes me cringe at times, and we all know his voice can be hard to handle as well. 3 stars.

My gosh that is a long album.

опять эти истории под одну и ту же музыку) я даже одну знала

This one didn’t do much for m outside of the obvious hits like “just like a woman” or “I want you” I love some Dylan albums so much but this one isn’t my favourite style

solid entry. several tunes we have all heard at least once. The over-emphasis of the last syllable of every single word sung does wear thin after a while.

At first I was into it. But as time and this album went on, I started to loose interest and every song sounded the same. Too much Bob Dylan, too much.

Super folky

its bob dylan alright.

Having arbitrarily disliked Bob Dylan for so long, I never realized how much Lou Reed is clearly inspired him. I recognize this album is good but also I am arbitrarily giving it a 3.

nonie würkli aktiv bob dylan glost (miji eltere henden nöd gern) okay rainy day women kinda funny aber hautmi jz nöd um ouh ja d schnorregiige nervt mich scho jz chli I want you isch jz s erste lied wo ich recht cute find aber joa leopard-skin blabla bluesig, rechr cool "she makes love like a woman" cool danke fürd info bob oke ich verstahn sini musig glaub chli besser aber umhaue tutsmi immernanig. bin lang ufeme 2-kurs gsi aber es 3 isches schoo

Great folk songwriting. The organ parts really make this album sing. Much more electric sounding than other Bob Dylan albums. Good album but not the best I have heard of Dylan. Leopard skin pill box hat is the stand out track along with Visions of Johanna

Look it's my fault for starting this thing while I wasn't exactly in a place to sit down and absorb an album. That's on me. I'm trying to meet big bob where he's at. I like Dylan, saw him live with Elvis Costello, and there's a couple songs of his I love, but I have blind spots. I know a few songs from Blonde on Blonde, I know it's big letters IMPORTANT, and I like this thing on first blush. But man. Sometimes it sounds like the Dewey Cox parody of his material.

Bob Dylans voice gets really old halfway through the album 3/5

72 minutes of Bob Dylan might be a little too much for a single sitting...

Meh. Bob Dylan's less catchy album, although everyone says its among his best.

I agree with many of the comments of the group on Bob. I have always loved his mainstream stuff, but have sort of always felt internally “obligated” to like / appreciate his deeper tracks for being more than they really are. That said , I did love his work with the Wilburys ( Spoiler Alert: TW first album will get a rubber stamp 5 from me if/when it pops up). Bob and Tom work well together and Tom Petty is probably the greatest American singer songwriter of my/our generation as Bob was to the last. That may be why he carries the heavy legacy with him in some circles. 3.5/5

Bob is a legend and I enjoy his music, but I can only take so much lol This album was good but nothing really caught my ear to go back to later.

Oh jeez. Not another Bob Dylan one... That said, this is much better than the others recommended so far: Highway 61 Revisited and the live one at the Royal Albert Hall. He has a tendency to go on too long in songs: One of Us Must Know and Johanna, for example, and his wailing, stoned sound can wrankle - but these are good songs and well delivered. Better than most Dylan, for me. I Want You and Rainy Day Women are particularly good.

A few great tracks here on what is overall an okay album

I admit I never knew what the fuss was about. This proves it. One of his most popular albums gets a "meh" from me, mostly because of (1) his voice, and (2) his tendency to name songs stupid things that nothing to do with the lyrics (minus one star for giving Anton Newcombe the idea as well).

I listened twice to this record, but I found that all the songs sounded the same. There wasn't a single song that made me go "wow! Great song!". None of them sounded bad, but nothing was outstanding either.

great album to listen to when working

I didn't mind listening to this one. It got me in a relaxed mood, surprisingly.

Great songwriting, but a little too much harmonica.

I mostly listened to this in the car and, while I’m sure the lyrics are probably pretty good, all of Bob Dylan’s songs sound mostly the same. May need to give it a relisten when I can actually read the lyrics.

No ha estado mal. Aparte del "I want you" y de "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" no me he guardado otra. Esa foto borrosa de la portada sigue siendo tan rompedora en 2024 como en 1966. Grande.

Very good music and musicians, but terrible voice. Rainy Day Woman (Everybody Must Get Stoned) I Want You Stuck Inside of Mobile Just Like a Woman

The harmonica doesn't work for me, I have to be honest that it was a bit annoying listen to it in most of the song, even tho, I think that the leatrics an maybe de vocals helped this album a lot. Also, I think that this album doesn't sound like the 60's (the decade this was release) it sound a bit more like 70's, so that gives it one more star for me

It’s obvious why Dylan is thought of as among the best. Great songs and great album. I just prefer when others perform his songs

It’s just so f’ing easy to listen to…the musical equivalent of pancakes and maple syrup on a Sunday morning. Well, maybe not John’s pancakes my daughter said those suck…haha. No doubt one of the best songwriters of all time, kind of makes it embarrassing to listen to most music created today. “Sad eyed lady of the lowlands” is a really special song, and one from my childhood. I know Dylan wrote it, but check out the version by Joan Baez if you can it’s hypnotizing.

For 5+ decades we’ve been told that Dylan is an amazing artist and because of that we’re supposed to like him. Yes he is a great lyricist and songwriter. But a singer he is not, and listening to an album of his front to back proved that. His “style” is grating when you hear it for 60+ minutes. When EVery SOng HAs that SAme EMphasis ON EVery WOrd he SINGs. Nothing short of annoying and it takes away from the musical landscape of the song. Plus, settle down on the use of harmonica. I like that this is one of the three full band albums he made that gave the proverbial finger to all his folk purists, but it really only earns a 3-star for its influence on other artists.

I enjoyed it, but also started to realize there's a chance I might think I like Bod Dylan more than I actually do. The first song was my jam. I want to get stoned! The electric organ is also great and I love when modern rock bands throw that in. However, after a while it started to blend together and tough for me to do 72 min of BD straight. Regardless can’t deny Dylan’s greatness as a songwriter.

I like Bob Dylan. He has some great songs. But I never listen to his albums start to finish and B on B is a great example why. I think it’s too long and I hate to say his vocal style wore on me (and harmonica). Still a very good album, but I think all the praise it has received is a bit overdone. I pegged it at the 4.25/5 I gave Rubber Soul and added/deducted from there. At the end of the day I simply did not enjoy it nearly as much as RS. 3.5/5

So now I’m a record on repeat: Great poet and lyricist Not a great singer I’m a fan of a harmonica (luckily or I might have struggled) Goes on a bit - always hits a 3.5 for me so what side shall I err on this time?

not my fav bob dylan but man’s a poet

Dylan still isn't for me, but I found his album a lot more listenable than Blood On The Tracks. I have a lot of nostalgia for Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, heard that track a lot growing up. Not bad, still not really something I would listen to regularly.

Classic songs on here, but I find Dylan's rhythm and tone difficult to listen to.

It’s cool that his songs are long, but there isn’t wasted space. He’s got lots to say about love and other random things he’s observed. Weird intonation that takes getting used to.

Muy del chill. Está bien.

Enjoyed the harmonica, but not very memorable

Låtskrivandet på topp, "sneeze, jeez cant find my knees".

There was a time I considered myself ‘deeply’ into music. I would listen to an album scores, if not hundreds, of times. I would pore over lyrics, obsess over phrasing, dissect every note, all in an effort to understand the ‘truth’ the artist was trying to impart. Sadly, those days are long behind me. Now, I use music to ‘soundtrack’ my life. So music is always playing, but in the background, usually to set a mood. I really don’t have the time or inclination to approach it any differently at this point. So viewed in this context, I liked this album fine. I’ve always enjoyed Dylan’s crazy voice & weird phrasing & fun & cool lyrics & wordplay. But its historical impact was lost on me. I enjoyed it & it was a fun listen, but that’s about all. I get that an artist wants you to be moved in some way by their art, but saying it was ‘fun’ is a damn sight better than saying you hated it, in my book. But possibly not from the artists view.

I recognize the place this album holds in the pantheon of great music in the 20th century. Lyrically it’s Dylan further cementing his legend, and musically, when taken in the context of the time period it was released, it’s a rollicking ride. That said, I’m just not a big Dylan fan. I can totally respect it, but I’m not going to seek this out again.

Better than other Dylan records I have had on here. Nice bluesy sound to some of the tracks.

Iconic lyrics for sure but the folksy whine seems to have crept back in - worth a more comprehensive examination of the poetry in motion with the harmonica muted, methinks.

Sometimes annoying

Hate bob dylans voice. Good lyricist though.

Lots of harmonica, speak singing, but perhaps that's how folk music is like. Great lyrics, super country like.

Admittedly not a huge Dylan fan, I kept an open mind going into listening. While I already knew about half of the songs, in the context of this double album they took on a new life and I was pleasantly surprised. Won’t be the last time I listen to this album beginning to end for sure. I feel I’ll come to appreciate it even more with repeated listenings.

Luckily it was a short album. Not a big fan of Dylan. Some of the music I recognized so that helped overall.

Early work of Dylan. Okay.

I think in the context of his career, this is probably an interesting document. But here I am two songs in already wondering how much more I have to go. The classic "Rainy Day Women" is a great listen, but I don't particularly like standard blues stuff, which is where he goes right after that. There's a lot of "sameness" to Dylan according to my modern ears. "Visions of Johanna" reminds me of North Country Fair with more rock instrumentation. Yeah, I'm only on track 4 and I'm pretty bored. I like the playful instrumentation of I Want You. This is the mode of Dylan I like -- pop songwriter. Overall, I think "I had to be there" -- it's hard to listen to Dylan for the first time and not hear all of the impressions and imitations.

He doesn’t so much sing as he just talks with cadence.

A nice relaxing album, I liked Pledging My Time and Sad-eyed Lady of the Lowlands the most.

I like the sound of his music but I never really enjoyed his voice. I understand why he’s popular just not really it for me.

He kept the same sounds throughout and it had Woodstock vibes

Solid album. Typical voice and singing style from Bob Dylan. Wouldn‘t buy it but like to listen to him once in a while.

Bob Dylan being Bob Dylan, there's a whole lot of spoken word lyrics, folk, blues-y/country rock type of sound. This style of music isn't really my favourite, however I can appreciate what he has done for music. I still can't get out of my head Zap Brannigan's singing to Leela when I hear anything by Dylan. Best: Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat Worst: Just Like A Woman

и I Want You и Just Like a Woman не просто так самые прослушиваемые треки в спотифае, мне они реально больше всего зашли. приятненько в целом, но душновато. короче понятно оценка - 6,5/10

Another classical Bob Dylan album. I appreciate the serious efforts but still can't say I'm a big fan of his music.

Bra album, kräver en till lyssning

Utálom. A. Szájharmonikát. . . . Ostoba vagyok, és azt hittem, a leopard-skin pill-box hat……… OG death grips

BD Was never someone I liked.

Not bad. Bluesy rock. Classic Dylan, when you could understand him.

3/5 Dylan is a wonderful poet whose music serves as a tenuously beneficial medium for that poetry. It is difficult for me to rate an album higher than 3 on strength of the lyrics alone.

I never understood why this album was so popular. I love Dylan, but some of the “radio” hits on this album like “I want you” and “just like a woman” don’t hit the same way they did when I was younger. I actually find some of the longer tracks (sad eyed lady/ stuck inside of mobile) to be great classic long form Dylan, but the rest of the album feels like long form rambling. Skip this one and go straight to John Wesley Harding.

Für Weinachten als Hintergrund gut genügen Blues Rock

I don't care much for Bob Dylan's voice or music. His lyrics are good, but I can't listen to his music. 3

nice cool, sad cowboy ahh music

Voice was grating.

Known before: Artist Standouts: 04. One of us must know (sooner or later) Rating: 6.0

Deffinetly enjoyed the music more than the singing. Lyrics were good but there was just something about his delivery that wasn't as compelling as the music around him.

Pas un chanteur qui m’interpelle personnellement, mais je reconnais son influence, entre autres sur Tom Waits.

Not a huge fan but a few of the songs made me realise how he has achieved such success. I enjoyed the start of the album more and liked it less as it went on - maybe fatigue caused by his voice, although he was still young enough to not have turned into a caricature of himself at this point.

Ehm. Nie je to také zlé. Len to nepotrebujem.

It’s Bob Dylan. Folk-y, very stylized.

This is still the era of Bob Dylan that I like but goddamn it really felt like it dragged on. None of it was bad, I just got sick of it like halfway through the 70 minute runtime. Highway 61 was just under an hour and that felt like it flew by but something about this one made it feel 2 hours long. I don't know if it's just this album or it's because I'm getting sick of Bob Dylan albums on this list like I was with the Who. Stuck inside of mobile was my favorite and everything else I already barely remember.

Have already heard and appreciated. Solid folk tunes from one of the greats. A couple blues numbers I could do without, but some of his best are on here: Visions of Johanna and One of Must Know.

I wanted to like this more. Love the harmonica (which I hardly ever hear anymore), love the piano, love the whole folk vibe. The sound of Bob Dylan's voice, though...it's almost a caricature of himself. I made a joke a Christmas or two ago that the guy playing Hans Gruber in Die Hard was trying a little too hard to be like Alan Rickman, and I feel like the vocalist here is trying a little too hard to sound like Bob Dylan--as if it's part of an SNL sketch or something. I fully realize the hypocrisy of criticizing vocals given the vast quantity of emo in my music collection, but I have not acquired a taste for Dylan's voice. Good music otherwise, though.

It was ok for a bob dylan album. Got to cultivate my music taste a bit more for me to really understand the depth of it

Dylan!

I’m gonna be honest this is not my favorite bob dylan album (actually it’s probably like #5 or 6) BUT it’s does have visions of Johanna which i quite like and it is bob dylan season sooo.. 3.5/5

Of all the Dylan albums I've gotten, this is just the most meh of the 60s stuff. You get the point halfway through and it never really has that banger that makes the album great.

If you listen to each song as a single, they are great by themselves, but when taken as a whole album, they get repetitive (musically and lyrically). It is full of Harmonica, blues, jangle pop, and New Orleans-style piano and is fun for the first half of the album, but then. Dylan is a great storyteller, but how many stories can you tell about the man, bad/failed relationships, and not even realizing/admitting you are the cause of all the trouble? And, of course, Dylan has a unique voice and singing style that is all his own. There is no denying that so many little pieces of this album influenced many who came after it, but the album leaves me saying, "meh."

Favoritas: Visions of Johanna, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues again, Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat, One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later)
