Reviews (page 3 of 7)

I enjoyed this listen. Soft melodies and groovy bass lines gave me a few euphoric listening experiences.

A bit samey but nice

The great thing about this project is discovering an artist, that for whatever reason, had passed me by the first time around. I enjoyed this album. Goldfrapp has a voice that is a cross between Stevie Nicks and Enya. I think I’ll be listening to more of this in the future.

Another artist I did not know but fell in love with! Would love to hear more!

This is stunningly beautiful. I had an idea of what it was going to sound like and it ticks all those boxes and provides more. Fantastic I'm between a 4 and a 5. I just really like it but realise it isn't the coolest album by the band or one that represents the band. But it's just a pleasant listen, a real pleasure for a Saturday night

Nice and dreamy, could listen to this again during a quiet morning

Due to this list, I discovered and feel deep under the spell of "Felt Mountain" recently. Upon seeing another record by Goldfrapp, I got excited. "Seventh Tree" carries a lot more energy than its sister album, but I don't think that's a bad thing.

This one grew on me during listening to it... Great melodies, great sound and quite varied... A strong 4.5, but in this case I drop it to 4... More listenings could bring it to 5 though

Muy chulo. Más melódico que el disco que conocía

Went back and forth on this one between, “wow!” and “whatever”. Some tunes almost straight folk while others reminded me of the Cocteau Twins. Definitely tunes for late-night chilling.

Listened to this on a solo road trip in the frame of mind that matched the mood. Very much enjoyed and I like her voice.

I dug this. Great listen for an easy Sunday morning.

I don't think it's their best album. Yet, I like the band, hence 4.

This one radiates Happiness. Some People may disagree, but they might be Clowns.

August 7, 2024 HL: “Clowns”, “Happiness”, “Eat Yourself”, “Caravan Girl”, “A&E”

Didn’t know there was more Goldfrapp here, a nice surprise!

Started off a little 'meh' but finds itself in the second half

Missed out on Goldfrapp entirely when every second NME article was about them. But I quite like this album! A song which stands out for me: Little Bird

I had a great time listening to this electro-ambient-sensual counterpoint-glitterball-glamour.

Fav: Happiness Least Fav: Clowns

Really enjoyed this album.

Great stunning

Lovely album this one

Goldfrapp's debut album was a lush ambient pop experience that I enjoyed quite a bit. 8 years removed from that, we can still hear some of the much-appreciated ambiance from that first album, but with some more definitive statements. The results sound more confident, grounded, yet maintain a dreamy element. I still think their more ambient work is the best, but it's incorporated well into this new style of pop.

Lovely. Pleasurable. Glad to find this music.

Out of all the Goldfrapp albums, I didn't expect this one on the list. Felt Mountain (patchy as it was) yes, Strict Machine (my favourite) maybe, but thankfully not the bland pop ones of Supernature and Head First. Tree has this weird folky poppy upbeat depressive thing going on. Opener Clowns is the highlight. Great overall but not essential.

Wasn't sure at all where this album was going after the first song which I think was in no English. Remainder of the album had some sweet electronics and some beautiful singing. Was such pleasant music to listen too.

Starts slow but improves as it gets into the groove. Listen if you like strange mercy from st Vincent.

I'm familiar with a couple of Goldfrapp songs, "Ooh La La" and "Number One," but I've never listened to an album of theirs before. I love those aforementioned songs, but I know this album has a different sound than Goldfrapp's earlier work, so I'm curious to see how I'll feel about this album. This album was really good. There were a few songs on this album that I thought stood out above the rest (more on those later), but I enjoyed the overall sound. Alison Goldfrapp's vocals are great, and I enjoyed that this album had some dream pop elements woven into it. The production work was well done, and I enjoyed the contributions from the additional musicians. "Caravan Girl" was my favorite song on the album, by a slim margin. I loved the guitar on the chorus, and the bright synth tones rounded out the sound really well. Alison's vocals on this song really reminded me of Neko Case's vocals on The New Pornographers' album Whiteout Conditions, which I absolutely love. "Little Bird" was really good too; its shimmering melody and the drumming made it stand out quite a bit. The outro was particularly good as well. "A&E" was my second favorite songs on the album, worthy of being the lead sing from the album. I loved the horns and acoustic strings, and how the song built ever so slightly over the course of its runtime, adding more layers to the sound. "Monster Love" was a great closing track; I liked how it alternated between acoustic sounds on the verse and letting synthesizers drive the melody on the chorus. As billed, this album was not as dance-y as the Goldfrapp songs I know, but that didn't take away from it. The biggest detractor for me was that a sizable chunk of the album was somewhat forgettable. Even the songs that I really enjoyed were a blast while I was listening to them, but they didn't stick in my brain when they ended. This album is probably closer to a three-and-a-half star for me, but its deep, often heartbreaking lyrics and the fact that I'd definitely listen to it again make me round it up to four stars. I'm looking forward to reviewing Goldfrapp's first album when it comes up for me. Also, shout out to Alison for including the word 'titties' in "Clown." That's my favorite word to use when I want to annoy my wife.

Nice, calming music - soothing, even if a bit nondescript.

I had previously reviewed another Goldfrapp album with the message, I liked it and wanted to hear more from the electronic music duo. Well, Seventh Tree was a pleasant surprise. I listened to it, but was interrupted and distracted by other things and to be fairly judge the album, I listened again. Guess what? I listened a third time and the music began to feel familiar (yes, that tends to happen with multiple listens, but not always!) and the songs seemed elevated (in mind anyways) and really enjoyed it. I'm not usually a fan of anything that's too electronic, but it's poppy, ambient, moody and interesting enough to just enjoy it for what it is. As I said last time, I should listen to more Goldfrapp.

Goldfrapp is On The Road To Somewhere good. Liked their sound a lot, great female vocals over mellow electronica and soft background sounds. Caravan Girl is the best song on the album but all songs are better than good. Will check out some of their other discs. Liked this one (3.8*s)

This is such a change-up from my prior Goldfrapp experience (all of which has been good) and I really liked it! So ethereal and chill, her voice is so distinct and the tempo of the whole album is perfect. So airy and lush, what a pleasant journey I will gladly embark on again and again. If you've been sleeping on Goldfrapp, wake up.

Love this album, very gentle and relaxing.

I haven’t thought of Goldfrapp in a long time!

I loved this album…it was musical and enjoyable to listen to. It was not cutting edge, but I’d listen to on the back porch, on a walk, at dinner. It is a great listen.

I remember this name from the radio days but never really listened to them. Clowns is a really beautiful acoustic guitar tracked backed by these beautiful strings and what seems to be bird song towards the end. I feel like the band "Jockstrap" must be heavily influenced by this duo (being of similar makeup and aesthetic blending of the acoustic/organic with the electronic). "Little Bird" takes a much trippier approach. Happiness and Road to Somewhere are quite beautiful additions. Maybe it's due to just listening to portishead, but this feels like the flip side of the same coin. Trippy, electronic and organic instrumentations, but a little brighter. I can go on about Cologne Cerrone Houdini's great beat and beautiful strings or Eat Yourself's haunting vocals or caravan girls explosive ending synth arpeggios but just go and listen. This album's content is weirdly not in the list of their most popular songs except "A&E" which makes sense to me just being so vibrant and deeply emotional feeling. It's been a long time since I've immediately felt an album this way so 5 stars for that alone. Signing up for this website was worth it for an experience like this alone.

Loved this, springtime like music 👍

Tämähän oli kerrassaan viehettävä levy! Todellakin kuuntelen uudelleen. Jotenkin tosi sillai symppis. 4/5

I have always been aware of this album and this group since this record came out and have always heard it was good, but never got to it. It's a great record, not quite what I was expecting, in a good way. Really enjoyed this and would definitely listen to it again.

Couple of absolutely great tracks on here. Will definitely listen again

Kind of love it. New for me. Give me more. Standouts: Clowns, Little Bird, Happiness, A&E, Road To Somewhere, Eat Yourself, Some People, Cologne Cerrone Houdini, Caravan Girl, Monster Love 4/5

This is pretty good.

I remember loving this album when it came out. So dreamy & airy. Ahh, what a lovely listen.

Familiarity bias, I love this album, it's just a lovely vibe. For those saying no standout song, I guess A&E was the song that got me into the album. I will always listen to this album when I want mellow.

I love this I feel like a fairy, a sad fairy but a fairy 🧚🏻

I felt like a fairy!

this is a great album put 5 of the songs on various playlists [happiness, road to somewhere, some people, cologne cerrone houdini*, monster love] the outro is super duper good

really good space pop electronic album, vocals are amazing best songs: A and E, caravan girl

Riche, complexe, doux mais consistant. Me rappelle l’œuvre de plusieurs chanteuses que j’aime énormément

Chilling with Goldfrapp

I like this. Especially Eat Yourself! 4/5

I really liked her voice! This would normally be exactly the kind of album that would be a 5 star album for me, but something about the songs themselves just dragged on for a little too long. I kept hoping for something a little more exciting.

This was good, but didn't strike me as great.

4/4 frappalicious

Whimsical, dreamy and laid back art pop. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: A&E Date listened: 27/03/24

A nice and comfortable album from beginning to end. Nothing to dislike at all. She has a soothing voice and the 41 minutes pass by quite quickly. However, nothing really sticks either. So is it a 6 or a 7/10? Noone really knows

I dig the guitar in this album, very soothing. I think this came at the right time for me. 4* because not in fave album territory, but very enjoyable.

Never heard of this artist. Songs are pretty. 4/5

Never heard of goldfrapp before but I'm loving this voice paired with gorgeous production

A very good, chill album.

Glad to have come across this album. I knew one or two of their songs, but the slower tunes are perfect for a long winter's night. Definitely bottled nostalgia in their sound.

Strange that some deserving artists have no albums on the 1,001 list and now Goldfrapp has another...and it's not Black Cherry (or Supernature). It's definitely a departure from the new age glam/synth rock direction they had been on in the two albums prior to this, but it's not that different from their debut album. Mind you, this one is better than their debut, I'm just not sure we needed both on the list. It's wispy, Alison Goldfrapp brings strong vocals (as always), and she and Will Gregory bring in some extra instrumentation that gives it that serene sound, like a movie score. For sure a 3 and for sure some ups and downs. On balance? I listened a few times before deciding. Favorite songs were Clowns (great acoustic guitar base, and nice orchestral string arrangement that makes it feel fairy tale), Little Bird (also wispy, but thanks to synth and vocal effects), Road to Somewhere and Eat Yourself (both with a simple beat, more strings, and captivating Goldfrapp vocals in the verses), A&E and Caravan Girl (both with a more upbeat, poppy feel). No real clunkers. It was definitely worth a few listens and I could see myself coming back to it, or other Goldfrapp albums.

Nice vibe throughout and I love her voice. Really enjoyed this album. Wouldn't call it a 5, but would definitely revisit. Favorite tracks: The first three tracks (Clowns, Little Bird, Happiness) create a great mood and I like how the energy builds across all three songs (but note - I had no idea what she was singing on Clowns until I looked up the lyrics - such a calming song about fake tits - insert eye roll emoji here), Eat Yourself, A&E, Caravan Girl, Monster Love (the others are all good, they just didn't catch my attention as much - really not a bad track in the bunch, it's just not at a 5 level for me).

Lilting and lovely, so perfectly pleasant. Almost ideal morning music, whether a sunny Spring or rainy Fall morning. More warmth and soul than many chill/electronica (or whatever we call this genre at this point) or comparable relesae of this era. A bit slight and samey, but so very charming nonetheless, and much better than their previous efforts – which were either too outwardly clubby or too unflowingly weird and willfully obscure/offbeat. This lovely songbird/angel can sing to me anytime

Really lovely, gets a little same-y from time to time but also right up my alley. 3.5/5

Liked it a lot more than I expected. Very melodic and well crafted songs.

Ethereal

Actually much prefer the mellow and blissed out Goldfrapp albums to the disco bangers. Tales of Us is ethereal and was essential when I was commuting on twice weekly flights to Germany. This is in that vein, and therefore wonderful

I really enjoyed the ethereal sound in this album. Allison Goldfrapp’s vocals are something else.

Nice Sunday afternoon music.

more varied and consistently enjoyable than other goldfrapp albums that i've heard.

Really good! 4/5 Standouts: Clowns, Happiness, A&E, Cologne Cerrone Houdini, Caravan Girl

Muy chulo. Más melódico que el disco que conocía.

This album went really fast. It kind of played in the background. It's very fun and pleasant, though. The vocalist has a beautiful voice that blends well with the music 4/5

pretty OK.

this is a solid 4 star, love the musicality

Да, неплохо. Голос зачаровывает.

Muy chulo. Más melódico que el disco que conocía

Really excellent album

I liked it, but I do feel like some of the songs sound too similar

i fucking loved this so much, cinematic, chill, beautiful, atmospheric. not something that youll be humming all day but you'll be buzzing from how ya felt while listening to it. So good!

A lot of this album is good. Really good. My difficulty is a lot of it is also really, really sleepy. I'm torn between ratings here. On the whole this is some really enjoyable pop music. Ultimately I think I need to rate high because I did pretty much listen and enjoy three times, getting interrupted partway through the first two.

So far, this might be the most underrated album I've had the pleasure of listening to during this whole thing. I need to stop listening to what other people say about music, because I assumed this was mediocre based on what reviews said. It's safe to say I was blown away at how very not mediocre this album is. It is instrumentally dense, texturally diverse and deep, and beautiful and luscious. Think Beach House meets Lana Del Rey meets Big Thief. I say it sounds like Big Thief because she really does remind me of Adrianne Lenker, but it does also have some of those softer elements that Big Thief has. Alison's voice is raspy, but also blissful and polished sounding. And the use of guitars and acoustic live drums on some songs just completes the whole package. This is filled with some of the most wonderfully crafted dream pop songs I've ever heard. Clowns' strings sound straight from the pearly gates themselves. Little Bird has an excellent climax with those drums I mentioned previously. Some People has small hints of those drums as well, but is led almost entirely by Alison's gorgeous performance. And Monster Love is a climactic closing track, and maybe the most textured song on the record, with these massive sounding synthesizers as the main instrument. Each song on the album is uniquely strange and trance-like, and there are definitely some baroque inspired aspects on here as well. Ignore critical reception and what others say. I believe this is one of the most excellent and worthwhile listening experiences you can have for a dream pop album. If you are at all interested in the genre, please check this out. Rating: 8/10

So comfortable as to seem nearly easy listening – and that's not at all a bad thing. Light and lilting for relaxation and perfectly charming overall, if borderline anodyne at times. Every record on this list should start from such a baseline of inoffensiveness.

This album has a very fresh and uplifting feel to the music. I love the electronic mix with the strong vocals. Clowns and A&E are standout songs that make this album great.

That was really lovely. Just too bad about the vocal compression on the first song.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this record. A very mellow, pleasant listen with great vocals and excellent production.

Very quite but lovely

Best song - Caravan Girl

Favorites were "Road to Somewhere" and "Cologne Cerrone Houdini"

I already liked Goldfrapp a lot and A&E has been such a favourite of mine for years! Listening to the album in full was wonderful - lots of songs I didn't know very well which I'm glad to have given time to. I love the variety of styles of the album and the warmth to it all. Really interesting and clever I think. Will keep listening!

Really great example of dream pop and folktronica Favourite tracks: Clowns, Happiness, Eat Yourself, A&E, Caravan Girl

The only song that I was familiar with theirs was "Strict Machine", which I enjoy. I liked the vibes from this album. Easy to listen to.

For someone's supposed first attempt at this style of music it was really quite well done. Some of the songs sounded a little samey but that's just par for the course when you're going for an almost dream like feel. Would listen to again Stand out songs: - Some People - Monster Love

Good album. Overall enjoyable

Really liked this album! Cologne Cerrone Houdini was my favourite song. This artist has a beautiful singing style, her vocals felt very... breathy and melodic.

This morning I saw the words that I normally dread - "English electronic music duo". Usually this means 8 minute long, repetitious electronic soundscapes on an hour and fifteen minute album. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised to find actual songs, with actual song structure and actual singing. Unlike most other electronic music artists, in this case the electronics are there to support the song, not the other way around. Really enjoyed, will listen again. 4 stars.

Understated drama and a frictionless glide.

I've heard a few Goldfrapp songs, but this was my first wider exposure. Alternatively dreamy and wistful, then joyful and driving. I enjoyed it. "Happiness," the only one I knew before, and "Caravan Girl" were the highlights.

My introduction to Goldfrapp was through Head First, and pop forward synthy extravaganza. I like it better than Seventh Tree…at least from two listens through. It grew on me quite a bit. Now listening a third time using hifi headphones, I’m liking it even more. This down tempo, more subdued sound works for me as well.

Ég þekki 2003 Goldfrapp vel, svo þessi plata kom mér mjög á óvart. Allt annar fílingur. Mjög ljúft. Kate Bush væbs á köflum. Mjög næs.

Pastoral weirdness.

20th June 2023 Listened during the day while working from home and a little in the evening. Chilled evening watched French Dispatch. I loved this, it sounded like walking home on a summer evening.

Wild, unpredictable, and surprisingly well received.

4 for eat yourself alone

Started slow, got better, strong finish.

I adore how ethereal this album is. A little bit samey sometimes, but delightfully atmospheric.

Oho, tää oli tosi jees. Ehdottomasti tulee soimaan tänä kesänä auringon paistaessa, lomapäivien aamujen ja skumpan äärellä

Really dug the back half. Basically indie. For the back half, 4/5

I liked this.

Chill folksy vibe with a hint of electronica. Me likey.

I actually quite liked this

It's simply beautiful. Love it.

The first song off the album is stunning.

very nice, soothing and upbeat

Not normally something I'd gravitate toward, but I was really pleasantly surprised by this. A nicely layered alt-pop record with beautiful floaty instrumentals and sticky vocals. Caught me at a good time after a stack of big guitar boy albums, but I think I'll be coming back to this one. Fav track: Eat Yourself

Really like this new-to-me album!

Pensé que sería solo una voz y guitarra aburrida y estaba resignado a perder mi tiempo, pero qué feliz estoy de haberme equivocado.

Cocteau Twins light!

giving St. Vincent vibes

Some Interesting tracks

Nice album. A few songs the vocals take some getting used to (first one in particular.) Worth it, decent listen.

Goldfrapp was a new artist for me and Seventh Tree was all new music. I enjoyed listening to the album. The music didn't sound a lot like typical things I might listen to, but the album still held my attention. The music seemed like it would fit in with Dido, Natalie Imbruglia, or Michelle Branch - not that it sounded like those artists exactly, but the music would fit in. A few tracks had some good energy and I bookmarked to listen to again ("Little Bird", "Caravan Girl", "Monster Love"). One track was verging on a skip ("Cologne Cerrone Houdini"), but it did not have the same sound as the rest of the album.

Ethereal, whimsical, sophisticated rhythms and a fascinating combination of sounds. It feels experimental in a way. Overall I really liked it.

Kind of like what you'd hear in a jazz lounge on Deep Space 9. Silky smooth vocals over fun beats. BIG FAN.

The only exposure I had to Goldfrapp before today was hearing A&E right near the end of Now That’s What I Call Music 69, so I had no idea what to expect going into this album. The opening track was absolutely beautiful, and Little Bird and Happiness were both incredible as well. The album dragged a little in the middle for me with a couple of less interesting songs, but on the whole this was hugely enjoyable and I’ll definitely be diving into their catalogue

Really enjoyed when it got a bit darker and eerier mid album. Great atmospheric production.

Surprisingly enjoyable and catchy album. Dreamy sound with uptempo synth- music that wasn't annoying or anything though

Didn't think I was going to enjoy that one, but it really wasn't bad.

This was great, loved it.

mysig mellow indie!

So I knew Goldfrapp but I didn't quite realise Alison Goldfrapp's voice could be so lovely. From the first 10 seconds of Clown my head (ears?) was turned. Got a new fan, which is all I can ask for.

Not really sure why I'm seeing so many people claim this album is homogenous or just vibes. While the delicate and dreamy atmospheres definitely play a huge part in the sonic identity of Seventh Tree, it's the core songwriting that shine through for me. There are also quite a few moments where Goldfrapp lets go of just creating serene vibes and comes out with some banger synthpop beat which really set this one apart from other albums in the same genre. Not at all boring.

Surprisingly nice!

Didn’t listen yet

Wow, what a great album. I would describe it as "lush".

I don't know if I was just in a mood today or what but this hit just right. It's beautifully recorded, the vocals are for the most part delightful, and there's an intriguing aesthetic at play here with mostly traditional arrangements balanced with elements pulled directly from dance electronica. It's pretty dang good. The only reason that it doesn't get full marks is that it gets SUPER navel-gazey at times and I know, in a different mood, that'd piss me right off. But today? Today it worked.

I lost track with Goldfrapp after the first couple of records, which was clearly a mistake. This is a beautiful electro folk album which I'm sure to return to. Best song is Happiness, just ahead of A&E

New artist to me and this album sounds the best since it’s less electronic and more mellow

I like goldfrapp. This is a good one too.

I gave this two listens, lots of beautiful singing, chilled rhythms and pleasant vibes. Will come back to it for sure.

Love it!

At first I wasn't digging it, but as the album went on it got kind of catchy.

Really enjoyed this! Came back fro a second and third listen

Great album, very dreamy and poppy, just my style. Good recommendation

Brilliant sideways move into pastoral and gentle psychedelia. Synths are gentle washes and pulses, a move that absolutely suited them.

Aika kaunista. Pitkästä aikaa jotain, mitä kuuntelee mielellään.

ALBUM RATING: 3.5 ALBUM GRADE: B- TRACK RATINGS: 1. Clowns - 4.0 2. Little Bird - 4.0 3. Happiness - 3.0 4. Road to Somewhere - 4.0 5. Eat Yourself - 3.5 6. Some People - 3.5 7. A&E - 3.5 8. Cologne Cerrone Houdini - 3.5 9. Caravan Girl - 3.0 10. Monster Love - 3.5

I’ve always loved Goldfrapp but haven’t heard this album. What a surprisingly chill album. I like it but wanted something more upbeat. I thought I would enjoy it better if I was in a chill mood.

This is a great late night, chill vibes album. Was really nice to get play chess and listen to monster love. Felt like a French version of Japanese breakfast

Removed again. Yeah fair enough. Felt Mountain is obviously great, Black Cherry is possibly even better so if a 2nd Goldfrapp album is going in it's 100% that one, I love both those albums and regularly go back to them. I stepped off though at Ooh La La because it sounded just like Train but without the character so I thought, ah, out of ideas. So I never listened to Supernature - I think I may have listened to Seventh Tree once as it cropped up in year end lists but it definitely didn't leave an impression on me at the time. So, here goes... Will this be another lush, sumptuous album you could just drown in... or not? And the answer is.... Well the first track is certainly gorgeous. More than a hint of those sweeping John Barry strings that have always hovered around their sound. To be fair, it stays good. Not the same impact as those two albums but enough to encourage me to check out their later stuff and give this a listen again.

Some really nicely written relaxed pop stuff

A&E is the absolute standout track on this.

Muy chulo. Más melódico que el disco que conocía

I was familiar with their more dance-tronic material as well as the 2000 release that had a James Bond vibe happening and more in-your-face, eclectic instrumentation to offset Goldfrapp's airy voice. This is more mellow and understated by comparison. It was brave to release this after a chart-topping dance album. The subtle songs and elegant production take a while to grow on you, but I like it. Between a 3 and 4 for me.

Мне даже больше Адель понравилось, но всё равно местами уныло.

This Album was right in my wheel house when it comes to some soft pop! This album made me super happy and hit me in the feels in the right way possible! Standouts include Happiness, Some People, and Caravan Girl

Pop, electrónica. Chill out.

Entertaining and smooth. I'll try out more of their stuff.

Ikke det jeg forventet, men bra. Hadde forventet noe mer elektronisk. Minner litt om Beth Orton

i only knew goldfrapp's music from supernature. this album was a complete departure! and i like it. it's serene. actually, it's surprisingly serene considering the variety of topics goldfrapp covers on this album. it's a nice easy listen, almost like you don't have to pay attention to the lyrics, but the lyrics are beautiful. each song is unique and has such purpose. overall, a lovely listen that i can't wait to come back to.

Nice and dreamy, whimsical. Makes me curious about this band, which I've been aware of but have not listened to much.

first listen a lovely album

Got some Joni Mitchel vibes from the opening track. Not sure what she's talking about though - hard to decipher, but the song's called "clowns" and I heard the word "titties," so I'm guessing this is some condemnation on cosmetic surgery and fake appearances - which I can dig. Or maybe I'm totally wrong. Very nice song though. The next two remind me of Electric Light Orchestra, especially in the case of "Happiness" sounding like "Mr. Blue Sky." This album is growing on me, which I did not expect. Next the album strolls into Pink Floyd "Dark Side" territory before really settling in its own thing for the final few tracks. I will definitely come back to this album from time to time. Good stuff!

Sounds like a mix of the Cocteau Twins and Kate Bush. No worse for that.

No está mal. Algo popi

i fell asleep to this album but in a good way

Cool vibes but less engaging energy than I was hoping for. Closer to Joni Mitchell than Bjork. Nice enough but could have done with an electro banger or two to make me sit up and take notice.

Very pretty, can hear lots of Alpine

I like this a lot. Great melodies that are just unexpected enough to be constantly interesting yet still completely accessible. "Happiness" is a particular favourite - I love the classic-pop progression combined with electronics; fantastic. If you'd told me "Road to Somewhere" or "Monster Love" was Kate Bush I wouldn't have batted an eye. The album drags just a bit in parts - each song in isolation is quite good, but the album suffers a little from too many similarly slow-paced songs. Pacing could have been a bit better overall, but in sum I really enjoyed this - nothing necessarily chill-inducing but I'll listen to this again. 8/10 4 stars

Muy chulo. Más melódico que el disco que conocía

Listened Before? N This was actually great! A little weird at first but they have a unique sound and I love it. Added to Library? N Song added to Playlist: A&E

I liked this album when it came out despite it being a bit left-field compared to previous Goldfrapp records. Listening now, I still enjoy the high pop elements but occasionally it does swoop into bland territory, albeit perfectly fine and well produced musical wallpaper. Happiness and A&E are great songs.

Not like their others, same quality.

Jeg likte denne. Fikk litt hipp A.kraus-vibber. legger denne i biblioteket av album jeg skal høre mer på.

At first I wasn't into this album, but then Happiness came on

A classic

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Clowns, Happiness, Road to somewhere

Nice album to listen to. I've never heard of this group and I enjoyed hearing them. I can see myself listening again.

A 4 as you like some of their other albums more. Good stuff though

Never heard it before but really enjoyable.

Not what I was expecting

Really good. Plenty of variety, unpredictable changes and interesting from start to finish.

7/10 nice dreamy pop music but it kinda put me to sleep at times

7/10. Some really enjoyable stuff, but the vibe was a bit too mopey for my taste. I liked the other Goldfrapp music that Spotify started shuffling after I finished though.

Great production and nice sound but generally pretty down tempo. 7/10

Loved this! I knew of Goldfrapp but never really took much notice. Great vocals, lovely, airy music and fine melodies. Definitely worth more listening time!

Not objectionable. Not special.

Not bad. Not good. She’s a talent. But could do better even within her chosen form.

Really good listen. A great sound and some damn fine songwriting. Caravan Girl, A and E and Happiness are standouts in a really good bunch of songs. A good listen.

Groovy

Better than I imagined. Apparently it's their odd ball album but they seemed right at home.

Happiness was recognisable. A pleasant album. Not sure I'd listen to Goldfrapp on repeat but it was good for a one-off.

pleasant, I thought they were much more electro. This sounded quite baroque pop

A: Helt vibe, helt intressant men ksk lite tråkigt? 3/5

Sounds like vanilla Radiohead with a female singer.

Pretty sweet! Not a band I really knew before, but some of the tunes will probably enter the rotation. Diverse songs with clear identities

Not a fan of Taylor Swift music.

This one worked on me like the Wilco album: I can't recall any of what I listened to after having heard it, but I feel like some sort of subliminal message was etched into my brain. Overall, I enjoyed it. Now excuse me while I go buy a cardigan, a frappe, and a fall scented candle.

It's not bad but it feels a bit inconsequential

Not sure if I’ve listened to anything from this album before. It’s alright but I much prefer their previous work. This sounds more like a less hooky St. Vincent.

Didn't like this nearly as much as their other album on this list - all the cool, edgy cinematic stuff replaced by pale, watery limpness. Still sort of pleasant, just very inessential.

a lovely easy listen!

I like her voice and there are some enjoyable songs on here but a lot of it was kinda forgettable. Not bad just not for me Top Track - Happiness

Never heard before. Enjoyed. Will listen again.

Теперь поняла, почему эта группа прошла мимо меня. Немного скучно, понравилось 1,5 песни. Может другие альбомы поинтереснее, но я чуть не уснула. Обложка красивая.

приятно послушать, просто обычный норм альбом, 3.5

A notch above other female singer/songwriter albums because of the sometimes interesting use of synth textures in the background.

had always heard of this group but never actually sat and listened to them. kinda understand now why a bunch of cis het women with substance abuse issues used to recc these songs to me as "relatable music"

Dreamy, pretty, but the unintelligible lyrics are a creative choice I can't fully get behind.

It was fine

I thought I was rating a Goldfrapp album yet every song says & Will Gregory… who is Will and why is he not important enough for the album cover yet important enough to be listed on every track.. strange one! Anyway the album played and it was just like background noise- nothing stood out, nothing grabbed my attention enough to make me take note apart from 2 tracks which were ‘a & e’ and ‘cologne cerrone Houdini’ The album felt pleasant in the background music type of way- almost like an on hold track. Not a lot more to say. Best track ‘A&E’ Worst track- ‘caravan girl’ simply for following the best to tracks and not been as good! 6/10

Nothing to exciting about this album.

yeah kinda liked this idk got worse towards the middlend but better again at the end

Great change of pace from the other records here, but got a little samey in the middle. Wonderful opener

1. Clowns (★★★☆☆) 2. Little Bird (★★★★☆) 3. Hppiness (★★★⯨☆) 4. Road to Somewhere (★★★☆☆) 5. Eat Yourself (★★★★⯨) -Fav 6. Some People (★★★⯨☆) 7. A&E (★★⯨☆☆) 8. Cologne Cerrone Houdini (★★★☆☆) 9. Caravan Girl (★★★⯨☆) 10. Monster Love (★★★⯨☆) TOTAL = ★★★⯨☆ (3,4)

incredible vocals throughout that entire album even if many of the songs have a similar sound they are all good

Pretty good, light and airy with some electronic vibes. New to my ear.

Pretty dreamy and ambient. Didn't necessarily hate it, but doesn't do much otherwise. I would agree with the comparisons to Kate Bush and the Cocteau Twins, but this doesn't quite reach the works of those artists. I feel like I'm giving out too many 3's as I enter the final 1/4th of this list. There's gotta be some gems still waiting in the wings for me, right?...

not very memorable, i put it on the backgroud and before i noticed it it ended. didn't leave a big impression in me

Light 3,5

I enjoyed this without being blown away. Feel as though I like the aesthetic and the production more than songs at times but it’s a pleasant listen either way. Enjoyed it enough that it made me go back and relisten to Felt Mountain. Two very different albums but similar in quality. Ended up rescoring that to 3 stars too.

dream pop, no Jonie, warm and delicate Little bird

Left me just a hair's breadth away from loving it. Mostly because of the melodies, dreamy and familiar. Alison Goldfrapp has a lovely voice, a bit twee. Might listen to this again. Was not blown away but wasn't painful, either.

Chill, but not as catchy as their other album on here.

Surprisingly decent.

Yeah, it's OK. Perhaps even vaguely interesting in places. But it was very much background music for me today and nothing particularly stood out as must listen territory.

good vibes ahh music

Se intenta algo nuevo que está bueno pero no destaca mucho en mi opinión.

Its a great album for someone. Not particularly my speed but good music can change minds. I enjoyed the pop forward format sprinkled with a myriad of genre influences. Felt fluid and natural. Good vocal performance too. A stand out from 2008 for sure.

Interesting dream-pop/trippy album. Her voice just floats along, not quite ethereal but approachable. The beats are there, carrying you through the album, but not driving you through. It's not quite head-bobbing, but it keeps you around. If it hadn't been on the list, I'd never go here. I probably won't be back. My Rating; 3/5

5/10 Goldfrapp are typically known as an electronic music act, with touches of trip-hop and synth-pop key to their sound. Interestingly, this album leans far more towards acoustic instrumentation in a lot of places, often backed up with some more electronic bedding, rather than having that at the forefront of the compositions. You can definitely hear the experience of their work with synths, as some of the subtleties of the arrangements do a great job of augmenting that more forward acoustic or folky tone that the album leads with. Allison Goldfrapp’s voice is also excellent and has a very pure tone, but she is also able to add a decent amount of variation to her delivery too, allowing for good range to suit each track. Unfortunately, while the core work that goes on here is decent, there isn’t a great deal of memorable songwriting to benefit from that work on the production. The record takes quite a while to get going and a lot of the work kind of floats by without wanting to bother you or interrupt whatever else you might be doing while listening. It’s not attention grabbing or exciting very often and, while it’s eminently possible to create ambient or chillout music that works in that way, but also delivers hooks and melodic or harmonic quality that rewards closer attention, to me this album rarely found that level. It did pick up a bit through the middle, and at no point was there anything on here that I actively disliked, so it’s not a bad album all in, it just feels a little bit too bland and clean to really offer itself up as anything more than fairly pretty wallpaper music. It’s always good for artists to try and challenge themselves with a change of direction and I applaud the approach here, even if the execution wasn’t really as good as I’d hoped, but ultimately, it fell into that middle ground of being inoffensive but also fairly unaffecting. Clowns - Allison Goldfrapp does have a lovely, pure voice. This is a slow moving effort that builds and falls away in a slightly odd way. The build is nice, but the falling away feels quite sudden and thin. It’s all very nice, but there’s not anything particularly standout about it either. It’s kind of like the music that someone would have on while people are milling around between the ceremony and the reception at a wedding. Little Bird - This feels like it has a little bit more purpose about it, with a little bit more drive from the bass and a bit more sonic interest in the instrumentation. Some of the vocal harmony stacks in this are really nice too. And it does, eventually give us a beat and justify the folktronica tag. Once it gets there, this is pretty cool and they do find the odd moments of focus that help it through. Happiness - Another nice track with a cool sonic palette and a decent swing to the groove, but it is a bit too twee. I kind of get what they’re going for here, but it does feel a bit too music like a 2000s poptronica take on something the Beatles might have done. It doesn’t quite have enough of a sharp edge anywhere to really elevate it, and after a while, the beat becomes quite relentless. Road To Somewhere - There’s an edge of Kate Bush to this, but there’s also a slight edge of bland early 00’s pop about it too. It’s kind of like if you stuck Pure Shores by All Saints in a blender with And Dream Of Sheep by Kate Bush and strained it to make sure there were definitely no lumps. That’s not to say it’s particularly bad, it’s just a bit bland and not particularly memorable and doesn’t sound very original either. Eat Yourself - The lofi sound of this is quite pleasant and it’s melodically a bit more interesting too. It’s got quite a warm, folky sound to it and her vocal harmonies are really nice. The weight of the beat and bass are great and the shimmering sound design is really effective too. It’s not the most hooky of tracks, but the vibe is right and it’s got a really warm, pleasing tone to the production. Some People - This is very stripped back to begin with and it takes some interesting directions in its chord structure. The build of this is pretty good too and the ebb and flow of it works a lot better than it did in the opener. Allison delivers a great vocal performance here and it has another touch of the Kate Bush about it, but without feeling as sanded down. The emotion of the music comes across here a lot better than it has elsewhere, and it does kind of feel like the album is starting to hit its stride now. A&E - Now this is a good, chilled poptronica song. The instrumentation is well managed and again, builds nicely. There are some cool subtle synth arpeggiations in there that give it a bit of depth. It does lose me a tiny bit in the bridge, but gets back in control fairly quickly. The calmness of the vocal delivery works really nicely against a backing track that has moments of intensity and lots of movement. Pretty good stuff. Cologne Cerrone Houdini - Now this is more what I was expecting from this record. A nice, chilled and soulful groove, inflected with downtempo electronic beds of synths and strings. It’s pretty, it’s got some good hooks and it has a little bit of drive to the underlying rhythm while remaining chilled. It’s not the most exciting of songs, but it’s a pleasant and enjoyable listen. Caravan Girl - And now we’re actually stepping up the tempo a bit more towards something a bit more pacy. It’s kind of like a pop rock song really, which is a bit weird in the context of the rest of the album. Again, it’s not bad and the main chorus hook is pretty good, but used a bit too repetitively. There are parts of this that I think are really decent. Some of the subtler instrumentation is really good, but the core song isn’t vastly interesting outside of the hooky chorus melody. It just feels quite generic. Monster Love - As with much of the early album, this is pleasant and pretty enough, but doesn’t particularly stand out or grab hold of me in any way beyond it being a nice, easy listen. There are some cool production flourishes here and there, like the descending synth arpeggiation and some of the crispy synth pads, and her voice is lovely as usual, but it’s just lacking in anything with much of an engaging musical substance. Which is a shame really.

Pleasant but not very memorable. Maybe deserves another listen at some point.

Quite chilled and not as dance’y disco as was expected from their more recent stuff. However really enjoyable, classy. 3.6/5.

Instrumentation was super cool, the singing was a little one-note. Favorite track: Little Bird

Favourite Songs: Happiness Caravan Girl

Can music be mumblecore? I don’t know what it is, but for the life of me I can barely understand the lyrics. The music is fine, but I find this annoying and in some songs maddening.

I actually like this more than I thought I would. Couple of bops in here, surrounded by some fine coffee shop music. Favorite tracks: Little Bird and Caravan Girl.

First listen

Light, easy-going, but mostly forgettable Fave track: A&E

(3) I would listen to this again but it is lo fi background music for me, so not sure i am ecstatic about it. I will listen to it again, but it’s not something I would listen to without sipping tea and reading a novel!

Chyba nic nie potrafię powiedzieć na temat tego albumu. Ale na pewno nie odrzuca, ani nie denerwuje. Takie 3

Lovely background music and instantly forgettable.

This was decent.

It’s nice. I listened to it about a week prior to writing this review and I remember it being enjoyable but not much else. Sooo….

Enjoyed this one more than their debut. Prob worthy of additional listen or two and possibly a higher rating. But ain’t nobody got time for that. 3.5/5

whimsical and shii, couple decent, alot forgetable

It's solid, nice vibes.

Removed Album #30 (List: https://pastebin.com/cSThNiK9) From the Vault #10 (April 24, 2026) I'm pretty sure I've seen this album cover while flicking through one of my scans of the book. Honestly, I like it. Women look good in these kinds of frilly, white-and-blue pirate outfits and I will never be embarrassed to go on record saying that. It's anyone's guess as to what this music is, however. A folky Gaelic album is my one and only guess. Here goes. Folktronica. Ambient. Downtempo. Dream pop. All genres I should traditionally like (minus the folk element), but sadly don't care for in the case of this album. Fortunately, there were still a good number of bits which I appreciated. The instrumentals are generally the highlight of this album. The backing tracks have an opulent, ambient sound which can be quite pleasing, particularly in the case of "Road to Somewhere". Of the analogue instruments on this album, the acoustic guitar is easily the best. The lightweight sound fits with the breezy songwriting and bridges the gap between the analogue and digital sounds quite nicely. The second strongest aspect are the electronic compositions, though they can be a bit of a glass cannon. The number of songs I thought were too busy and incohesive were relatively even with the ones that I thought were good, but I think I can safely say that I liked this album more than I disliked it The vocals and songwriting are on the lower end of the things I appreciated, but they're ultimately competent and hold themselves quite well. Overall, I was content with spacing out to this music. I'm not compelled to give it a relisten just yet, but I might put this on in the future when I need to wind down. Time to figure out why this album was removed from the list. Added to the 2010 edition of the book and removed from the 2011 revision. That is fuuucking brutal - likely the shortest amount of time that any album has spent on this list. I guess we definitively know what the least-essential album of this 1001 is, huh? I don't have a scan of the 2010 book, so I can't go rifling through the entry for this album. To Wikipedia I go. The album was inspired by paganism and children's books. A pivot within their style. The band's most acclaimed release since their debut album. Had a successful lead single and three other modestly-performing singles. Went gold on the UK charts within four days of release. The chart performances for this album were surprisingly good all across Europe and the West. It had an average peak position of No. ~20 across 17 different countries and was the 86th best-selling album of 2008 in the UK. Even if the reasons for its inclusion weren't good I'd still vouch for this album - it's a pretty good indicator of where pop music was at during the time and where it would later go in the early 2010s. I cosign this inclusion.

I see the comparisons to Kate Bush and Cocteau Twins. Her voice is soothing voice and the ambient music and arrangements are nice. British/Beatles vibe. I liked it.

I don’t know anything about this artist so I went into this with a bit of trepadation because of all the terrible albums I had to endure on this list so far but this ended up being a great listen. I’m always worried about the quality of music in this era as they are generally very derivative but this had some great experimental sounds in all the right places within the pop format. I’m definitely going to check out the rest of the discography as I’m sure there will be some other interesting pop gems in there.

Fine and good

Listened to this while fixing an Ethernet cord, made for a good listen

Pleasant change for Goldfrapp, though I also enjoy their electronic work. Quite enjoyable. But 7 out of 10, and rounding down.

Solid effort

I was surprised - positively. I thought it would be some sort of upbeat annoying electronica, but it was a collection of nice dreamy pop. There’s nothing that stands out on the record, though, so it’s not necessarily something I’m going to revisit

it's fine, it's pleasant enough but it's not that interesting to me. Fav track: Eat Yourself

Everyone is basically agreeing about the vibe and then slapping different scores on it. I am no different. 3

Wanna fall asleep on a redeye flight? Put this on.

Their fourth album. Pop / Electronica. Ethereal, dreamy vibes. Very soft and smooth vocals. It's all a bit same as it doesn't really go anywhere. Decent enough album.

very whimsy Lana esc ethereal kinda listen. almost feels like I'm in a circus in a good way.

Caravan Girl is kind of good and the album as a whole doesn't have anything awful. It's all sort of just background noise (complimentary).

It's a vibe. Chill music, but nothing stood out too much. Wouldn't mind hearing more from them.

Day 9 Seventh Tree by Goldfrapp is one I struggled with a bit. Not because it’s bad. The songs are well written and the sound is really nice, but it just feels like it’s missing something. It lacks texture for me. It ends up feeling more like pleasant background music rather than a focused project that takes risks. Even though I kind of liked every song, nothing really stuck with me. No standout hooks or moments that felt memorable. It’s not bad by any means, but I definitely prefer her more upbeat, earlier stuff. Favourite song? “Little Bird”. Wine pairing? Something light and slightly floral like a Sauvignon Blanc or even a chilled rosé fits the soft, airy vibe. Food pairing? Light dishes work best here. Maybe a fresh salad, goat cheese, or something simple like grilled fish. Vinyl? Probably not. I’m feeling a 2.5, but I’ll round it up to a light 3 out of 5.

you know what, whatever pixie shit this was, it was okay

Good vibes for Easter. 3.5 stars

I feel lost. Was this album a whole dream?

Enjoyable, but as many said, forgettable. I couldn't tell you my favorite song or a title of any I liked it stood out.

A very nice lullaby-ish album.

Connaissais pas. J’ai l’impression qu’on est sur la même vibe que Regina Spector, Agnès Obel, en plus pop C’est sympa mais il manque un truc je trouve

same song played 10 times. but pretty pleasant

I'm giving out a lot of threes right now. It's got an airy pleasantness to it, but it's also pretty insubstantial.

Pretty good chill hippy music; could have been a bit more interesting though.

A bit of a surprise to me, as I only really knew Goldfrapp for glitzy stompers like Ooh La La. I like this more and the airy songs give her wispy voice more chance to shine

Goldfrapp is glad I got my decaf frappuccino jokes out in my review of Felt Mountain, where I gave that record 3 stars and signaled my disappointment at the lack of pep. Now that I am no longer cold-listening to the band, I can better appreciate what they've brewed up for us here. Sorry, it's very hard to resist the puns — I often mask my discomfort with humor — and there really is something about this chill pop that makes me uncomfortable as a listener. I think it's that for all its sophistication it does not seek to mask its desire to connect with me as a listener through the lyrics and song craft. You might say the cool is a little too calculated and the words trying a bit too hard. And yet, this album does its work on me more successfully than Felt Mountain (at least today).

I nearly skipped this album but I’m glad I didn’t. Hints (!) of Kate Bush in there - not bad.

Charming enough album. Ethereal and all that good stuff. Drags a bit but good cocktail music.

Pleasant in a completely non essential way. Very much a feel piece and as such a little Narrow and samey it it’s scope and range, gives me vague impressions of a take on artsy pastoral English poshness. Background music, pleasant vibe, musically adept but lacking anything that really stands out, heard worse 3 star

Dystopian ambience was a real Goldfrapp sweet spot on 'Felt Mountain'; but mellifluously melancholic folk hits the spot as well, to some extent at least. They always had a knack for a great tune dressed in strings, as the glorious 'Utopia' and the sublime 'Lovely Head' demonstrate; and so the leap to more stripped down melodies, is probably not too much of a leap at all. The album tracks the cadence of 'Felt Mountain' however, starting strongly and drifting to lesser memorable tracks, such as the vaguely boring 'Road to Somewhere'; the sub-par Natasha Beddingfieldness of 'A&E'; and even the 'Oompah' equivalent with the cabaret of 'Happiness'. But the finish is strong, with the Serge Gainsboro adjacent 'Cologne Cerrone Houdini' and the great pop of 'Caravan Girl'. And she looks like a right saucepot on the cover. I don't think it reaches the highs of 'Felt Mountain', but it is the more consistent album. Ergo, it is rated on par, at high three.

Very nice album. Enjoyed listening to it.

Not sure how I feel about this. Kind of light and airy. Doesn't grab me as much as their other album on this list, Felt Mountain, which sounds a little cooler and darker. This is more like some sort of Indie rock album of the oughts. Not terrible, but kind of boring. Maybe a low 3/5

Pleasant enough, especially at the beginning of the album. But so . . . twee. And none of the songs really landed with me.

It was OK, a bit boring, not really something I had to hear before I die (even though I already had)

3.5 stars. Electronically-infused folk/dream pop. Ambient with chill vibe throughout. Synth used well over acoustic guitar, piano. Standouts were "Road to Somewhere" and "Cologne Cerrone Houdini". Dud was "Some People".

Bit ethereal to start with but improved as it went on

It was nice.
