Reviews (page 4 of 7)

It was nice.

Pleasantly surprised by this. Futuristic tones over traditional melodies. Probably won't return to it very often but it was a nice soundtrack to a morning with the kids

Like a psychedelic Taylor Swift meets Billy Eilish meets Glass Animals? Little Bird sounds just like Swift. The first 5ish tracks were interesting, but it falls off in quality in the back half. I definitely missed this back in ‘08 and was happily surprised by it. I dont know if they get the credit for influencing a lot of singer songwriter stuff of today Happiness was my favorite. Wanted to bump to 4

It feels kinda weird for this album to have been made in 2008 honestly. Just try and compare it to the mainstream of the time. Maybe that's why it was critically acclaimed and therefore is on this list? Either way it doesn't matter since I'm not judging that, but how much I enjoy the album. It's yet another case of I don't love it, I don't hate it like the majority of this list. It's just there. It exists. I can see why it'd have fans, I can see why it'd have haters. It's not music I would actively seek out. I can kinda see why people say it reminds them of Cocteau Twins, though I disagree with that take. This album lacks that dreaminess. It's not pulling me in. It's fine as background music or, as stated by other reviewer, instagram story music.

Strong.

Pleasant noises, but utterly forgettable. Like "Flow State, the Album"

Ethereal pop

Этот альбом сильно уступает дебютной работе Goldfrapp. Он от электронного шансона и даже мотивов барокко ушёл в сторону поп-рока вроде Аврил Лавин.

Goldfrapp is new to me and so is this album. When I read they were an electronic music duo, I was expecting typical electronic music. But this album was very mellow and had more of an acoustic feel to it. Evidently, Goldfrapp had performed an acoustic radio session and got inspired to change things up on this album. I really enjoyed it and would definitely listen to it again.

I wanted to like this more than I did. I did like it better upon second listen in headphones and it’s possibly something I return to later and bump up to a 4. But I was a little underwhelmed as a usual dream pop enjoyer, especially knowing some of their other stuff. Still very pleasant vibes, but I felt like a lot of it didn’t go anywhere. One of those albums where nothing really stood out to me except the last third of Little Bird, which I wish the album included more stuff like that.

It's pleasant enough, but felt like one very long interlude leading into Caravan Girl, at which point it sounded like a Taylor Swift joint. Standouts: Happiness • Cologne Cerrone Houdini

Objectively a very good album but I don't think it has enough depth to become a repeat listen for me. I feel like I already know all its secrets already, but the production is beautiful and I did enjoy it a lot.

The album starts interestingly, but gets bit boring towards the end. Few top pop tracks on this, but nothing spectacular.

Very flowy 80s-like, English rock music, despite being from 2008. I enjoyed it but it didn't wow me. Reminded me a little of the La Las but WAY better.

Meh…there’s an excellent album by Grouper that came out at the same time. Reminded me of that but boring.

What looks like a 70’s album cover is deceptively a very well informed 2008 electronic album. Big soundscapes and inviting melodies. No ear worms but still pleasant nonetheless

I saw this descibed as trip hop, it is definitely is not. What it is is very well made, extremely pleasant to listen to pop music. Which has it's place. One for when you need to lower the cortisol.

3 / 5 stars

This was an interesting one. And al9t of it isnt the music itself. The first thing I noticed was how fuzzy and scratchy the recording itself was. And its from 08 so no way its that way on accident. It just had this texture to the whole thing. Now the music itself is OK. It has its moments but I really didnt love anything either. Caravan girl was my only saved track and its the most unlike any other track on the record. It has some speed and movement whole the rest is alot slower and methodical. Its better than a 3 but no way is it a 4 either. Its better than alot of other 3s but its what I need to give it. Im for sure interested in this artist though. Im sure they do cool shit with the many other records they have. I'll have to use this as a jumping off point then

I'd give it another 1/2 star if those were a thing.

I live for the production and dramatics of this album. Favourite tracks: Clowns, Some People

New idea just rerelease this album but don’t include the first song Seriously though, probably the worst first impression I’ve ever had from an album. It’s like she sang the whole thing with a retainer in. Thankfully that was the only song that sounded like that, vocals were pleasant for the rest of the album, not sure what that was about. Pleasant’s definitely the word I’d use to describe the sound, it’s very light and listenable. The vocals are soft and not super interesting, but absolutely not a problem. I can’t say I truly resonated with anything on this one; it’s definitely on the minimal side at times but it’s pretty good as background music I guess Could be a lot worse, but I wouldn’t really say I was impressed

Sounded good, very dreamy, some hooks, but not enough

The album sounds nice, but it didn’t really do anything for me, it was just okay. The vocals and instrumentation sounded great to me, but they were still boring. Overall, just a mid album.

Apparently Goldfrapp made some killer electropop bangers earlier in the decade. And by the time that sound started gaining mainstream attraction, she took this record in a much mellower direction based on folktronica. More ambient with strong melodies, ambiguous lyrics, and a somewhat melancholic voice. We've still got some upbeat bangers in here, most notably Happiness, but the majority forms a cohesive collection of slow, thoughtful, emotional tracks. I do think there's a lot of missed potential here. A&E is a great lead single, but still feels like it's missing something and leaves a bit to be desired. Cologne Cerrone Houdini shows what the other tracks could have been. They all have their quirks, and the only truly forgettable one is Some People, but it could be that I just wasn't paying attention. It is my type of music though, but I won't let my bias bump up the score.

6, mid

I really liked Happiness! Does she ever wear pants? Her voice is very airy and has a spiritual effect on the music.

Pretty sleepy, but it was a pleasant enough experience. I was all ready for EDM which is what I thought Goldfrapp did. If I knew their other stuff, this might have had more impact in terms of showing another side, etc.

3/5 - I liked this the more of it I heard, especially when it broke out of the background music vibe, like on A&E. Likely won’t stay with me, but pleasant enough.

Great Songs: A&E Good Songs: Monster Love, Clowns, Some People, Happiness, Caravan Girl Mid Songs: Cologne Cerrone Houdini, Road to Somewhere, Little Bird, Eat Yourself Bad Songs:

Not a "bad" album, but not enough excitement for me. In the right mood I can see this being better received

Color me surprised, this isn't too bad. Definitely better than the other things I have heard from them. A solid 2.75 stars. It's ok, I don't think anyone needs to hear this before they die.

Not particularly remarkable.

Good just depends on mood

Have had this one playing in the background for a couple of hours, it really blends in and while nothing jumps out it is easy to listen to. Definitely enjoyable. Albums like this make me wish there was a 10-point rating scale. 3 doesn't do it justice, but 4 feels a little much. 3.8.

This album is a cautionary tale of how it only takes one album to derail your whole band’s trajectory. Pre-Seventh Tree they were well on their way to super stardom. Then they pulled the handbrake with this album and never quite recovered from it. I mean it is not a bad album, it’s just…erm.. forgettable. Why was Black Cherry - their creative peak - not chosen for this list?

It's alright, nice and chill - but only 2/3 songs I would listen to again.

It was pleasant to listen to. Kind of slipped into the background.

Kinda vibey but kinda boring

I always get excited when we get a female singer. I was disappointed with this one though. I thought this was completely unremarkable.

Very dreamlike. Clowns was probably my favorite, it felt like I was being pulled into a dream. Other than that, the album was just alright though from what I remember. 5.8/10

The songs do sound similar and I haven’t detected any hooks that hooked me but it’s well done music I thought it may sound dated but it doesn’t so much - some songs better than others the second half is better to me

Will probably return to this when I need something in the background, but not all that engaging imo.

Dreamy music, which I like. The songs don't really go anywhere, and after a while, it all starts to sound the same, and I can't distinguish between the different songs anymore. Pleasant to listen to, but only once for me. 6.5 / 10

Her voice sounded a bit like Madonna at times. Great songs, very pleasant.

I prefer their more dynamic songs. This one is a bit dreamy / lo-fi. I can't believe 'Clowns' was a single. It's so gentle and slow. There's not many other tracks on here that help raise the level either unfortunately. I guess it's nice enough, but it really isn't exciting in any way. 2.5 rounded up.

-this is the second Goldfrapp album i’ve heard. this one had a lot more folk influence than the other one which was more electronic, though there was definitely a common sound unifying both -not the most memorable tbh but i did like it, i thought it was very pretty -Favorites: Clowns, Little Bird, Road to Somewhere

Wasn’t expecting much from this but was pleasantly surprised. The secondhand is better than the first but maybe more listens will change my mind

Album 29 Top 3 favorites off the album: Caravan Girl, Clowns, Happiness I had no expectations going in. It was an interesting blend of soothing and charged without ever getting too hot. It didn't feel cold, but there was something cooler about it. Good mix of acoustic leaning folksy with electronic. Different vocal quality than a lot of what I normally listen to (not a bad thing), some of this album reminded me of Kate Bush. It was a combination of instrumentation, form, and vocals. I haven't listened to enough Kate Bush to say for sure, but there were bits here and there.

Better than expected, good background music for a Sunday.

Decent musikk egentli

I saw "electronica" and cringed. I was mistaken! This, for whatever reason, scratched an itch. The vocals are lovely, some of the songs have a mellow, trip-hoppy feel that I enjoy, and a few others are little upbeat pop gems, reminiscent of Metric. Pretty good record. not sure it's so good that I'll end up listening to it again, but pretty good! Highlights: "Some People" "A&E" "Caravan Girl"

Pleasant enough, but a bit boring.

Lustrous

This was fine. Nothing I would ever reach for though.

This album kicks off with a beautiful song. Folky with amazing singing. I realize that space is crowded in the music business, but damn they did it well with that one. The rest of the album is beautiful too but doesn’t capture the magic of that track again. “Happiness” is so classic it felt like a cover. Is it not?? Maybe because it evokes the Beatles and beach boys.

Good, spacey indie pop. Has shades of Tame Impala at some parts....not totally memorable but I was listening while working. I'm glad I listened but probably wont revisit too much....good for a certain vibe. A standard decent album of the 00s.

This probably isn’t the first album one should hear (before they die) by Goldfrapp. But alas, for me, it is. There is evident talent, a beautiful voice, and a really catchy song called “Happiness.” Another song, “A&E,” was a single and brought the tempo up a notch. Otherwise, it’s a quiet album. I can respect it but it’s hard to get excited about on first listen. I’m left curious to get another, differently styled album.

If I had insomnia, this would have been a better album. However, I didn't have insomnia. As a result, my imagination felt like it was driving home at 2am and had another 80 miles to go. Nothing to hate, but a grind to get through with enthusiasm.

Lovely soothing background music

I've never consciously listened to Goldfrapp, so this is interesting. I get the impression that this album might not be typical of their other work? It's pretty mellow. I enjoyed the Happiness video

Album is pretty cool, the singer has a really nice voice. I see how this would’ve been influential at the time, other than that I don’t have much to comment. Just a solid album that was enjoyable

Pleasant sound, but can't say it grabbed me, those pleasure senses just didn't tingle.

Not everyday that you see electronica mixed with folk, but this (mostly) works.

Folk/neo-folk with classical/orchestral/synth elements. Some interesting chord progressions, but those breathy vocals aren't good for me.. Little Bird has a 70s prog/experimental feel. Ooh, also breaks out into almost psychedelic. Instrumentals are actually really good. Halfway it gets a bit boring. Not sure if the music gets less interesting of if I got bored of it. Really cool in places, boring in others. Could have been great, but on average it's average.. Best track - Little Bird, Happiness 3 stars

Can be a bit cheesy but overall very enjoyable listen. Favorite song was Happiness

Seventh Tree is pleasant and carefully made, but it never quite rises above that for me. The softer, more pastoral direction is clear, with gentle electronics, acoustic textures, and a dreamy, inward-facing mood that’s consistent throughout. Nothing here is grating or poorly executed. At the same time, very little truly sticks. The atmosphere is nice, but it stays diffuse, and the songs tend to blend together rather than assert themselves. I found myself appreciating the restraint and tone more than feeling emotionally pulled in or musically surprised. This lands squarely in the middle for me. It doesn’t offend, and it works fine as background listening, but it also doesn’t invite deeper engagement or repeat focused listens. A straightforward three stars: competent, calm, and ultimately not very memorable.

Lidt stille nusset musik. Gør ikke noget særligt ud af sig. Glider hurtigt i baggrunden.

Very good. It has a vibe of tranquility that i like. But this is it for me. Nothing special.

Not all that long ago a friend of mine offhandedly credited me with introducing them to Goldfrapp. I'd never say I'm a Goldfrapp fan, but I remember they appeared regularly on a few of my (aggressively curated) pandora stations in the 2010s and I must have shared/played one of those at some point. For the life of me I can’t remember what song lead the charge, probably "Rocket" off of Head First but maybe it was "Ooh La La" from Supernature. Anyway, who cares. This isn’t the disco Goldfrapp sound I know, but that’s great. Unlike either of the albums I just mentioned, this record feels very subdued and intimate. At times Alison (Goldfrapp) even sounds kinda like Stevie Nicks, which surprised me, but I can’t say there was anything in particular on this record that really grabs me. I’d be happy to put it on in the background sometime; it’s a fine album.

sounds a little bit like an electronic version of aimee mann. i like regular aimee mann better, but it's still nice!

Beautiful voice, liked the album but not enough for me to love it.

I bought Goldfrapp’s first album on release and really liked it. The in-your-face electronica was great. This is pared back quite a bit. Meandering, but not unpleasant.

Beautiful. I've never properly listened to Goldfrapp before, and I was expecting chilly electronica, so I was pleasantly surprised at how warm and human this is. I'll be listening again.

A really nice blend of acoustic melodies and subtle electronica, Seventh Tree was a clear change of direction for Goldfrapp, but one that worked very well. While living in rented accommodation with friends back in 2008, we were getting ready for the Electric Picnic, where we'd see Goldfrapp play the main stage, second billing to Sigur Rós. We had this album on heavy rotation. Listening to it now, it brings me back viscerally to that time again. Songs like "Caravan Girl" and "Cologne Cerrone Houdini" show how Goldfrapp's disco electronica works just as well as a more pared-back sound. "Little Bird" into "Happiness" is the album high point though. The former starts simply before gaining momentum when the beat comes in. "Happiness" is just a perfect song. The instrumental bridge after the chorus would lift even the darkest of spirits, and the video leans fully into that feeling, making you want to hop around the streets. Pure happiness in song form. 3.5 stars.

Soothing. I liked it. It's like a dollar store Portishead

The Good: We get gold… we like Gold!!! The Bad: Finding out that frapp is old French for strike… The Ugly: The welts on my face after having been frappayed by gold numerous times… Okay, so, second album of this band on the list… also, that was a spoiler alert… sorry. Did I like it? I can’t recall the album, though a week has gone by since I listened to it… This is one of those albums that you can have playing in the background while doing nothing, then wondering where the last week has gone. Guess that makes the album a waste of time… but it isn’t shit. So 3* because I am feeling nice… should be 2* though...

A fine album - it didn't move me, but it was pleasant to listen to.

Started out great the died down

Album dal mood particolare, non mi è dispiaciuto, forse non me lo risentirei di mattina e sopratutto di fila ma comunque ci sta.

Quite a nice dreampop album. 3/5

Chill and relaxing, a bit muddled in the vocals, not bad not sure this album is essential in any way.

Not my style but well done.

I mean it’s alright

Not bad

My initial reaction to this album is that it reminds me of contemporaries The Helio Sequence - it has overdriven distorted synth sounds and electronic grooves. It has a psychedelic, paisley underground undercurrent running through it. The vocals are lovely. I'm not super familiar with the rest of their work but I'm aware that they are ostensibly an electronic/dance group. This record is much more straightforward pop though. There are some high points - A&E, Little Bird, Caravan Girl, and Happiness are all good - but the rest is not as remarkable. Pleasant and dreamy, 3.5

Not sure I see the Electronic concept here

I like this quite a lot more than her first from this list, which I gave the dreaded and rare 1. This subs out the electronics for dreamy pop. It sounds quite lovely and is warm and inviting on a winter evening, but ultimately doesn’t stick. Mid-to-high 3

Didn’t hate this. It was a good mellow album to put on throughout the day.

As soothing as a warm bath and very restrained by comparison with some of the Goldfrapp material I'm more familiar with. Put me in mind of a folky, feminine companion to Beck's 'Sea Change'? To be honest it went somewhat in one ear and out the other but that likely says more about my state of mind than the record.Let it wash over you I suppose.

***An ok album, easy listening

Almost a 4

Cool indie pop dance folkish vibes thing. The vocalist is incredible with more than a hint of Kate Bush. Not my most favorite thing in the world but a great example of this type of music. Three stars.

This album cover does not fit this music at all. A pleasant listen, but no big standouts or anything like that.

Looks and sounds like my grandmother

I like the atmosphere, like in the last track Monster Love

Decent vacuuming music

Not bad

Slow, dreamy vocals

It's pretty chill.

Not usually a fan of music this slow but I enjoyed this quite a bit, lovely vocals and interesting but comfy instrumentals

Not the goldfrap I'm familiar with. Much calmer more indi and less electronic - matches the vibe of the cover art. Some catchy nice stuff, but most forgettable side from the vibe

Pleasant, pretty good as a background

It started off as a unique Folk-Electronica banger, and then eventually became one long slow song. Favorite Track: "Little Bird".

Cool mix of folk and electronics. Reminds me of Beth Gibbons solo or Air. Enjoyed the more psych-poppy songs but was pretty bored with the more downtempo stuff. Favs: Clowns Little Bird Happiness Least Favs: A&E- Bit cheesy. Some People- Boring.

For something I wouldn't have sought out on my own, I thought it was pretty decent. Very chill, but not necessarily boring. Mostly pleasant if a little bland. It was a nice surprise. The biggest issue for me was that I didn't really care for the style that much. As a result, it didn't resonate as strongly as it might have otherwise. I still enjoyed it and thought it was good, but can't say I'm really drawn to it or will have it stick with me beyond this listen. I wouldn't mind having it on in the background, though. Overall: 2.75/5

Random thoughts: * I definitely have heard of Goldfrapp before and I'm fairly certain I have heard the track "A&E" before. I'm not sure where I heard it before but probably on a Paste Magazine compilation in the mid 2000s. * I'm not sure how to describe the music but indie is probably the best generic description but it definitely has alternative and indie folk sounds. * Overall this was enjoyable and I liked listening while I did the dishes but it wasn't anything I would make my friends listen to.

Very atmospheric and lovely listening. I don't think I actually like any of the *songs* though. I'm not desperate to get my guitar and play them. They are all sort of beautifully-produced ditties. So yes; it's all very nice, but "nice" maxes out at 3 stars I think.

It was alright? Some good bits and some boring bits. Maybe I missed something but don't think I would actively listen to that again. Not bad though.

achei até legalzinho em alguns momentos!! dito isso, é tbm extremamente sem sal

ou tem umas bem legais hein mas eh bem chatim morno quando não tá bem legal. bem normal!

= The Beatles Perfectly fine

#166/1001. This introduced an unknown Goldfrapp for me. The folky sounds lured me to the same old story. With the first two songs I was in love with this album. Then settings went on, and as with love often, the passionate feeling started fading away, and changed first into liking, then to whatever. I don't know if I could live happily ever after with this album. I'm pretty sure I would fall in to infidelity with some other artist. I don't have anything against visiting the album again, hoping to revive initial moments of attraction, but would that help? I don't think it is an album that I'll keep around till death do us apart. Sorry Goldfrapp, it was fun while it lasted, hope you have better luck with someone else.

soft and sweet but a little boring

This would definitely be on my list of 1001 albums that “are totally fine.” It was fine.

brit. pop, singer songwriter, 2008 ->3

I thought I would love this more than I did. Their second album 'Supernature' was pretty awesome. This was OK, but a bit boring, easy to listen to but also easy to forget.

When I had my first professional job out of uni my boss used to play Goldfrapp all the time - I don’t hate it, but it’s about as bland as my boss was. To be fair, I don’t think she liked my music taste either.

Pretty nice sound but it doesn't do much to get outside of its comfort zone

Sonically pretty cool but also very forgettable.

Cool album. Songs are well done and have a unique sound. Not something I’d personally reach for a lot but it’s good.

a bit of a change from their previous very Turin Brakes in places

Enjoyed it.

Very slow electronic. Wasn't necessarily bad, but definitely not engaging.

6/10 Nice enough, but not really adding anything special. Highlights: Some People Happiness Caravan Girl

I would have zero idea what she's singing about in Clowns if I didn't look up the lyrics - kindof like a Sia-vibe type of singing. It's all very whimsical la,la,la. Very floaty, electic. A&E and Caravan Girl were cool songs and really stood out.

not bad at all

God tunes and beautiful voice

iwie voll nice aber iwie auch forgettable. conflicted. 3.5.

This is an original sound. I don't like her voice so much - it's a little too throaty/whispery for me. On the positive side, the songwriting and production are beautiful.

Ambient and pleasant. Nothing outstanding, but very enjoyable.

Day 56 Wasn’t what I was expecting, nice background music whilst working today, probably wouldn’t return often though 6/10 Highlights Happiness A&E

Vibes💫

Cozy rain day album

This is better than I thought. Not my favourite music but still very good.

First song "Clowns" I was listening along and reading the lyrics and for a moment I thought I was having a stroke because what I was reading and what it sounded like she was saying were two different things. Is this where singing in cursive came from? - I mean it is a beautiful song and the production is very lovely but WHOA hahahah The rest of the album is a pleasant vibe. It was nice to just have on in the background while I got things done throughout the day.

Pleasant, well-delivered but unexceptional.

who this

Before this, I was only familiar with a couple of Goldfrapp’s more electronic sounding songs and really enjoy them. This album isn’t bad but didn’t do much for me. A&E is a good song. It reminds me a bit of Taylor Swift’s cottagecore era, which I liked at the time, but it gets repetitive.

I enjoyed this. Nice and chill. Not sure it's one of the greatest albums of all time, but it was a good listen.

Not bad, and not too long, only 41 minutes. It's nothing I'd buy but I wasn't revolted.

Airy, ethereal vocals that have some charm but do wear thin after a while. Still a pleasant enough listen.

Ethereal and dreamy. Also boring. 3/5

Good background. Not very memorable

This is the dreamy, ethereal, atmospheric kind of music that sounds really pleasant while you're listening to it. But it's also the kind of music where it does slightly merge together at times and you forget what each song sounded like by the time the album is finished.

More relaxed than any other Goldfrapp I’ve heard, and about as enjoyable, which is “pretty enjoyable”. It’s probably forever tied to a weird feeling of sentimentality as of yesterday though: while listening, I was driving with my four year old kids, and we went by a construction site. One of my kids said “Maybe when I’m big they’ll build me a yellow house to live in!” and I thought of her growing up and felt a bit sad and said, “Yeah, maybe.” Then she said “And you can live in the dump!”

This was alright. Very whispery. I was listening to this album on YouTube, and just happened to look over when Happiness was playing. The official video for that song is delightful (boingy)!

It’s good, I think? It’s very atmospheric and ‘soft’ and it kind of washed over me. But I liked what I heard. That’s not much of a review, I know.

A pleasant folk styled album, nothing too outstanding, but at the same time, nothing too bad either. A consistent album if nothing else.

- é um álbum bem feito, mas não achei muito marcante - a voz dela é muito bonita - tem elementos de dream pop, talvez um predecessor do hyperpop?

Cologne Cerrone Houdini my favourite track. Not a bad album

Second album from this artist I've had on my list and this one was marginally better than the first. In fact, this one may end up on the play list at our next Wiccan meeting.

Not as good as her prior effort Felt Mountain Alright now that that's all said and done where can I get one of those snazzy colonial pirate hats

63/1001 :: Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ➖ Rating: 7 Listen before you die: Sure After being smacked with an error message last night I was curious when the next album would drop and if I’d have enough time to get through it. Of course that was short lived and I was served the 4th album from a band I had never heard of. I don’t know why but based on the cover art I thought this was gonna be trip hop or something. That it was not but it was dream pop. Frankly this album was right in my wheelhouse and a very enjoyable listen. I’m not sure that I found it special. But I also didn’t have to skip through anything. Will I go back? Not sure, but if you wanted too I get it…

Harmless. Her voice kind of annoyed me, but I did enjoy the closing track.

Hard to understand the lyrics. Like the folk based acoustics

It was a little too singin yodeling on a mountain for my taste.

A real departure from what I think of as being Goldfrapp music (more EDM or at least electronica). This album is more like Virgin Suicides by Air or something--ethereal pop with synths and electronic influences. Not really an album that I liked a lot, but I dig the musical exploration. Ultimately I picked two of the less popular (based on Spotify plays) tracks on the album: "Cologne Cerrone Houdini" and "Caravan Girl." Both seem to capture the overall vibes of the album, and I enjoy both songs a lot, though I'm the album isn't one I'm likely to return to.

I got Felt Mountain before this and was floored and how dark and brooding it sounded - such a unique sound that I appreciated. Seventh Tree is a step down. Stripped back singer songwriter vibes with a few electronic elements here and there. Really did not impress me much, though pleasant enough while it's on. 2.7/5->3/5

Favorite songs: Caravan Girl, Cologne Cerrone Houdini, Little Bird, A&E Least favorite songs: Clowns 3/5

Lovely album. A lot of it is light and airy folk but usually with a somber or melancholy tone that reminded me of Radiohead. Other tracks were very reminiscent of psychedelic Beatles songs. And “Road to Somewhere” felt like a midtempo 90s pop song, like Madonna in electronica mode. Nice, eclectic album with a mellow vibe.

This was a polarizing or on/off kind of listen for me. Some songs I thought were incredible, like "Clowns" "Little Bird", and the Beatles-esque "Happiness", and some I really didn't like, like "A&E", "Cologne Cerrone Houdini". I felt like I couldn't really get a good grasp on what this artist was trying to do. Maybe that makes it impressive though? It's certainly interesting music that moves in a lot of directions and yet doesn't sound stretched too thin. I feel kind of conflicted with my rating, but I genuinely think with more listens I could grow to really enjoy this record. I'll have to give it another spin when I'm in a different headspace.

An okay album but nothing that stands out. 3 stars or C-.

Pirate costume on album cover? 5/5. Songs? 3/5. Not my thing, but I did like one song enough to star on Spotify.

Very different than the previous Goldfrapp album that was on the list (which I loved). I don't like this one as much. Music seems fine, just not my thing.

It is a good listen, but the samey vibes make me zone out. But it is quite enjoyable as a background listen while focusing on something else.

Can’t say any individual song was particularly amazing, but the general feel of the album was a bit different and not unpleasant

Very soft vibes, but I couldn’t really picture the feels

A pretty solid album. I liked Happiness a lot. Gets a bit samey though.

Goldfrapp is do dope. This one didn't hit me quite as hard as Felt Mountain, but parts of it have been playing in my head for days. At this point I've listened to it three times, and although it doesn't tilt over to four stars for me, I will say that I love it.

Shades of Kate Bush but in a minimalist electronic style. It’s not massively exciting but it’s pleasant enough.

Solid, not a ton of replayability

The enunciation on the first album had me thinking this album was going to be in another language, but eventually I got used to the vocals and settled in. Great for background music but other than that, not much stood out with this one. It’s a low three, but still better than most of the twos. Not entirely sure what the significance of this album is.

Is this ASMR?

It’s ok I guess, still some reverb and her voice is just great, but not that ethereal cool of other albums

I've not heard of Goldfrapp, but the album cover was enough for me to want to check them out. And since it was newer was also a reason I was more interested in checking them out. Good album IMO, would listen to again. Nice and chill, good to listen to while working.

Enjoyableand relaxed

Album started off slowly, but it grew on me.

It's Enya on benzos, which I kind of like, but (rather appropriately) I doubt I'll remember ever listening to this. I didn't even realize it was in English until the second track. Whatever - not being into numerology or cereal grains I'm clearly not the target audience for the annoying whimsy of this album. Even so, I thought it was pretty good.

Charming and very listenable. While I can’t always understand the garbled vocals, I enjoyed the sound of this album a lot and will probably come back to a few of these tracks for another listen. ✨

11/07/2025 It was inoffensive, but a bit boring in places.

Álbum muy chill para escuchar tumbado en la cama viendo pasar el tiempo

Cute album. I feel like the "electronic" label is pretty generous since I didn't get much of that out of this but whatever. I'd be curious to listen to more Goldfrapp at some point. Favorite track: Happiness

Nice mellow music. Good for background while you are doing something else.

This was very different to their first albums, much more mellow. But I do prefer la la la la la la.....

Pleasantly listenable, if a little unexciting. I like her voice. Maybe this might be higher than a three on repeated listens. I think I liked Happiness best.

Begint vrij rustig. Prettige stem om naar te luisteren, interessant dromerig geluid maar daardoor schiet er een nummer voor mij er niet écht uit.

herzig nonie devo ghört, nonie öpper kännt wo irgendöppis vo goldfrapp verzellt hed – nöd mal annähernd aber herzig isch sie echt wüki en piratin? und wieso luegt sie mich so schockiert ah? oh well, da springi 3 mal vo de planke will's bim erste mal so spass gmacht hed

Pleasant wallpaper music

It was weird, but this grew on me.

It's pretty but a little boring.

Standouts Happiness

background jazz, nothing more really but quite good still

Soft and nice. Feels very British and like a movie soundtrack

As far as floaty marshmallow princess indie goes this is exactly middle of the road. Not quirky enough to be Regina Spektor, not heavy enough to be St Vincent. I remember enjoying myself, but I can't remember a single song. Lyrics to Clown go hard tho.

Another perfectly fine album that seems like an odd inclusion in this list. Since there are better Goldfrapp albums, does that mean you need to hear MULTIPLE Goldfrapp albums before you die? That's hard to co-sign. Anyway, three stars.

Interesting. Slow low vibe.

I wasn’t that taken with this one. I like a fair bit of Goldfrapp’s work, so was looking forward to it, but found it a bit less striking and a bit more generic than expected.

Frekar þægileg plata. Vel hægt að vinna við þetta. Engar svakalegar hæðir samt sem áður, en ekkert slæmt lag heldur.

Allt í lagi, engar flugeldasýningar. Fín vinnutónlist.

Interesting, but didn’t blow me away.

Hard to get through, had to do it in multiple sittings. still think its decent, but yeah, harder.

With its gorgeous strings and acoustic warmth, Seventh Tree achieves a daydream-like quality that momentarily captivates but doesn't necessarily resonate.

Honestly a major snooze; whole thing sounds the same that it's difficult to differentiate the songs. It's not bad, just predictable. 5/10.

This was a nice listen. A bit more edge or a bit more instrumental substance would've been better for me, but I get the appeal. Perfectly good quiet background music for a perfectly good quiet background day.

Was expecting discoy electro indie from goldfrapp but this was much more laid back and folky. Quite liked it and recognised a couple of the singles but wasn't hooked enough to go back to it I think.

Fine, but not that exciting. Recognised a couple o tracks. A&E was my favourite. Not much more to add, doubt I'll be back. Not really my thing but not at all bad

Thoughts before listening: 00s era indie pop I believe. I remember Goldfrapp making a lot of critics lists at the time, but I never had any interest. Review: This was a nice surprise. Well written pop songs that lean more on folk and rock sounds than dancey beats. Not typically the type of a sound that draws me in, but for some reason this is working for me. Favorite songs are "Little Bird", 'Houdini", and "Caravan Girl". 3-stars

Not my vibe but it’s cool and relaxing

Pleasant, if a little sleepy. I doubt I'll ever listen to this album again.

3 - pretty good. Reminded me of Elo at points

I did like the lyrics and vocals on this one but otherwise there wasn’t really any one song that stood out to me on the album.

Chill vibe but not enough to stick with me. She wears a cool hat in the album cover though

Much like their first album, this is nice, and I think there’s a place for this music. I’m just so rarely in the headspace for this airy dreamy music. Especially when it isn’t really innovative in its soundscape.

A pleasant if entirely unnecessary entry on the list.

This would not be my first choice of a Goldfrapp album to include on this list. This one is warm and folksy overall without the strong dance sound of other albums. It is a fine album. But not as inventive or overall as interesting as some of the others.

Dreamy, inoffensive music that drifts from one song to the other. Not unpleasant, but sometimes you forget it's even on.

An album. Listenable.

This reminds me of something I would’ve listened to in 2008 trying to listen to anything and everything to figure out what I liked. Now, not so much.

Like a bit of Goldfrapp. Not spectacular- but a good listen.

Goldfrapp! An iced coffee drink? A journey through the British countryside wearing Björk’s goose dress? Or a reason to consume edibles before noon? I don’t know. I didn’t hate it—even though track one (“Clowns”) had me ready to fake a power outage just to get out of listening. And yet... A&E crept in and made me feel something suspiciously adjacent to "liking." There’s something sweet and strange buried beneath the pastoral fog. Not quite a banger, but not a snoozer either. File under: “Albums to play while you pet a moss-covered rock and reevaluate your life.”

Cool, ainsi que cool.

Disappointing and underwhelming. From what I’d seen of Alison Goldfrapp before I was expecting something dramatic and dynamic but no, it was actually kind of dull. Second listen on the headphones started more promisingly but then it tails off in sameness. If Florence and the Machine are not on this list they should be. London Grammar are better too. I’m getting quite jaded with this tbh but on I trundle

This runs a little pop for me. But it’s really nice, upbeat, not annoying.

Nice chill and dreamy record with a few moments that made me stop working and check the song because it was good. The second half of Little Bird is an example of one of those moments. It picks up tempo and goes a lot more electronic. It was really cool. Most of the moments on this record are chill but kinda forgettable.

A pretty sound, but after listening to it, I cannot remember a single track, moment or lyric.

Seems I forgot to rate this one right after I listened to it, but I think I mildly enjoyed it all. The softer, more chill songs fit the groups sound the best of everything here. 6/10

# Album Name: Seventh Tree # Artist: Goldfrapp # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Pretty mellow album all round. Not as good as their early bangers but still a good listen. Theres some good melodies and vocals, good stunes, but it just doesnt jump out at me. I dont think this needs to be on the list if im honest. # Top Tunes: clows / happiness / A&E / Houdini / # Would I listen to it again? Yes

Never heard of the band and it was a new experience. It’s not really my style but it’s easy to listen to and kinda fun.

This must be the second Goldfrapp album in a week! It's pretty drippy stuff.

Mellow, dreamy, electro/folk-infused sweetness

nice version of music that could play in the back of a save the puppies add

Its fine, but not what I would normally be in to

I enjoyed the first couple songs the most. Pleasant sound and good production.

Pleasant to a fault, but happened to strike me at the right time (very late in the evening). Genuinely surprised it managed to produce a UK Top 10 single. Monster Love was a great closer. Can't see myself returning to it in a hurry, but who knows?

I have never heard of Goldfrapp before this. It's chill. It's dreamy. It has nice singing (doesn't have that annoying "cursive" singing). But it's also a bit slow for me, only one upbeat track.

eat yourself and clowns I liked the best. the latter has a hook similar to a certain beatles song so couldn't get past that. liked the intimacy of the vocals on those songs too.

Pleasant listen but ultimately I don't think it was too memorable

This album kinda feels like it was made to be the soundtrack to a coming of age movie or something

Not as good as pilots

Jettsoning the synths in favor of fairytale imaginings, Goldfrapp hit upon a perfect formula that best showcases their singular approach. Certainly something to vibe to on a crispy, balmy day. Favorites: Clowns, Little Bird, Happiness, Road to Somewhere, Eat Yourself, A&E, Caravan Girl.

Kinda dull at first, like a pale imitation of soft 70s balads. Then I could hear the electonic keyboards blending with the vocal and I saw that there was a depth I didn't notice at first. Good. 3.5/5

NOT AGIAn!! its good

where's the tri[pp hop? sounds nice but i forgot about it

Instrumentals are good, singing is good, wasn't really sure what to expect but songs just feel a bit nothing for me. Synth stuff is cool and I like the way that some songs build with drums. Favourite songs: clowns, happiness, road to somewhere, Cologne Cerrone Houdini. Overall around 6/10

Incredibly adequate.

This was fine, I listened to it and it was pleasant enough. Not really sure about the name “Goldfrapp” but ok

My initial listen wasn't all that positive. The album felt a bit like a derivative Kate Bush, which basically put me in the mental position of "why?" i.e. why would I listen to this record when I have better, more original, amazing records to listen to, like the records Kate Bush made? I left the album on repeat while I was doing other things, and ultimately, the record started to stand on its own. I still don't think of this record as some amazing thing everyone needs to experience, but conversely, it's got moments, and clearly the people involved have talent.

First track was OK, gentle melody, though the silly, affected voice annoyed me. After that, nothing caught my attention except the bizarre lyrics.

Listens: 3 Stand out tracks: Happiness, Road to Somewhere. Happiness sounds suspiciously like a Beatles song, but I couldn't find a track with that title. Some comments on YTM suggested that Paul McCartney would be jealous or ... Whatever. Regardless, the song is enjoyable. Road to Somewhere on the other hand sounds like it could be a wound down version or cover version of an Audioslave track. Also great.

First-time listen for me. It's all nice and pleasant enough. No idea though why anyone would consider this essential listening. Also, after two or three songs this kind of soft, whisper-y singing starts to be kind of annoying.

Uninspiring pop. Vocal with no power what so ever.

It was more dream pop than I was expecting. I remember Goldfrapp having a couple of singles with relative success in the UK, but they came from earlier albums and were a bit more upbeat. It was pleasant, if a little easy to ignore at times.

Good background music.

So apparently I like Goldfrapp. Huh.

A lovely, dreamy little album. The full impact of this album is felt in contrast to Goldfrapp's other dancier, electronic music. For those unfamiliar, "Seventh Tree" on its own doesn't really show their versatility particularly well. Not that people can't still enjoy it, but it possibly doesn't stand out quite as much to non-fans. The music definitely hits a certain kind of mood when you may be craving calm, optimism, connection to nature, and a slight sense of wonder. My only criticism is that the songs don't really stick with you after listening. It would be a great album to return to occasionally, but it's unfortunately easily forgettable without any prompting.

Maybe it's because I'm used to listening to hour long doom metal songs, but the consistent themes of this album didn't bug me as much as it did others. I found reading about the members of this band more interesting than the album itself. One of the first thoughts I had was "well, the strings are nice." Turns out the guy who arranged the strings for this also did it for Bjork, so no wonder I liked it. 7th Tree uses a lot of ideas that were beat to death in the following years. Reminiscent of Stomp Clap music. Overall though, I liked it more than I didn't.

This reminds me a lot of the new Beth Gibbons (Portishead) album that came out last year, just not as interesting. She has a nice voice, but some of the songs are just a little lacking. High 3.

Some of this is nice. None of this is great.

An interesting change of direction for Goldfrapp, but I can't say I like it better than their catchy synth pop stuff. It's fine, kinda bland as far as ethereal dream pop goes though IMHO.

Second Goldfrapp album I've heard on this list.. I don't think it really needed both tbh although they are pleasant. Fine enough while it's playing, mellow and atmospheric electronica which is very Cocteau Twins-esque. Not particularly memorable though I was probably in the mood for something melancholic this morning so I'll give it 3 just about, rather than 2

This album was ok but it sort of reminded me of St. Vincent without the rocking guitar and I spent the time wishing I was listening to St. Vincent instead. Not sure how or why this is in any way innovative or belongs on the list, but it's decent I guess

It’s fine. Alison Goldfrapp’s voice is excellent, but the music is just a bit meh. It starts to get more interesting towards the end when it drifts away from the folky-type stylings, but nothing remarkable.

This is how I imagine frappucino or hapiness taste like. I wouldn't take it away from someone else but it just doesn't sit well with me.

Better than I expected but I could easily name 100 albums not on this list that should be ahead of this.

I've heard of Goldfrapp, but I don't think I'd really heard anything by them before, and certainly not from this album. I imagined something much older and more lively than what this album had to offer--I think one of the reviews cited in the Wikipedia entry who mentioned Kate Bush and the Cocteau Twins was pretty spot on, albeit with slightly more of a pop-orientation than either of them. (Sadly, try as I might I couldn't find an online version of the 2010 edition of the "1001 Albums" book that was the only edition to feature this album; probably not a good sign that it was pulled not long after it was added (and the Internet Archive's 1010 edition was revised in 2011 and 2013 and thus didn't even have that entry...).) I'm afraid to admit that the only track that even mildly caught my interest was "Cologne Cerrone Houdini". I had high hopes that I might enjoy the five videos of their singles from the album, but if anything the videos largely made the songs even less engaging; these are my notes: "Clowns" (creepy, too ethereal), "Happiness" (quirky and fun, poor guy must have been exhausted hopping throughout), "Road to somewhere" (boring, too ethereal), "A&E" (quirky, kind of fun, but not a great song), and "Caravan girl" (OK but nothing all that interesting; I suspect the title would be received a lot worse if it was American-phrased "trailer girl"...).

This is a good album overall, and I like Alison Goldfrapp's voice. However after two listens, the only songdms which stuck with me we're Happiness and A&E, both of which I knew already.

Good album to end the day. Lullabies to go to sleep. Not being negative here , it put me to sleep.

Ethereal, airy, laid back, vague, cozy, chill. The instrumentals are clearly in the spotlight, while the vocals and lyrics take on a background role. All the songs blur into one another. In the end, you have an album that feels like the cool breeze of an air conditioning on a hot summer's day. Not a rollercoaster ride, but at the right moment, with the right mood, exactly what you need. 3.5/5

Lovely voice. Some very nice sounds. Definitely a 2010s indie movie credits vibe.

Second album by Alice Goldfrapp on the list, and I think it helped me to make up my mind if I even like this band/singer. The answer is no, Seventh Tree is super lofi, chilled music, that just slowly drains your energy and brings you down, regardless of the initial mood. I didn't get the atmosphere of this record, it sounded to pessimistic for me. It's not a bad album by any means, but it's just wildly out of my comfort zone.

Nice easy listening

Whimsical. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Seventh Tree starts off with slower-paced songs and then moves towards the faster songs towards the middle. Interesting sequencing choice. I found this to be a pleasant album, though I think it suffers from the need to put more post-2000's albums in revised versions of this book. I will be interested to hear the other Goldfrapp album in this book. This was a lot less dance-y and club atmosphere-like than I expected. I enjoyed Little Bird and Happiness sounds like something that would have come from a late 60's or early 70's group. It had that vibe to it and was probably my favorite song on here. There is a Scottish band called Texas that have a similar sound to a few of the tracks on Seventh Tree. Goldfrapp is a bit more mellow but Road to Somewhere had a very strong vibe of Texas. These songs here fade in and out of my memory, which isn't a criticism other than to say this isn't necessarily a memorable album.

A fine background listen, no more.

It’s okay. Tried once or twice to listen to the lyrics, but most of the time they are buried under strings and reverb I couldn’t make them out. Album works better as background sounds to whatever else you are doing.

If I really concentrated on a song there was always something there - but it was so easy to zone out and just let the music filter by. Blame this over-stimulated existence. Overall I liked it.

Seventh Tree just felt so flat for me. I really enjoyed the psych-pop sound they brought on the second half of Little Bird but otherwise it was just a meh album. I’m more frustrated because I can hear what they are capable of and they just bored me for the most part. 3 stars

I’d give that, say, a little over three out of five. It wasn’t incredibly interesting vocally or production wise, but I suppose I was entertained throughout. However, there could’ve been more. Definitely could’ve been more. 3/5
